Brig, Switzerland: Where It Is and What You Need to Know

The historic town of Brig, Switzerland lies in the Upper Valais region of Switzerland.  Zermatt lies to the southwest, Simplon Pass to the east, Jungfrau Aletsch to the north, and Andermatt to the northeast. Brig, also officially known as Blig-Glis , is located in the Rhone Valley , 691 meters above sea level.

Brig  is on the route of the  Glacier Express  that goes from  Zermatt  to  St. Moritz . Other attractions in this alpine town include St. Sebastian Chapel, the Stockalper Castle , and the thermal baths

There are plenty of things to love about Brig, even though it may not be as famous as other cities and towns in Switzerland.

Brig was historically part of an important route in the Western Alps during the 17th century. Today, the Stockalperweg hiking path is open from early June to mid-October. From the quiet Taferna Valley to the wild Gondo Gorge, this path is dotted with mountain streams, forests, chapels, bridges, castles, and museums.

Brig is easily accessible from many parts of Switzerland. With the opening of the Lötschberg Basis Tunnel NEAT, Brig can be reached in one hour from Bern and in two hours from Zurich and Basel. It is a great location for excursions because it is so convenient.

Several of the best ski resorts in Europe can be reached easily from Brig. But before we go into all the attractions near Brig, let’s see first what the town has to offer.

Stockalper Palace, Brig, Switzerland

Stockalper Palace , the most prominent building in this alpine town, dates back to 1658-1678. It was built by Kaspar Stockalper, a Brig silk merchant.

Besides  Stockalper Palace ,  Gamsenmauer  and the Church of Mariä Himmelfahrt  with ossuary are historical sites. To protect the valley from attacks coming from the west, Gamsenmauer was constructed. The Church of Mariä Himmelfahrt in Glis is one of the oldest in the area.

Brig’s Old Town

Despite the small size of Brig, is still worth a quick stroll if you are already in the area. I consider it to be one of the most beautiful towns in Rhone Valley. Brig’s Old Town offers historic buildings, cozy hotels, boutiques, restaurants, and shopping opportunities.

Visitors can arrange a Group Tour of Brig (about 90 minutes long) or a Culinary Tour (4 hours long) at the Brig Simplon Tourist Office ( Address: Bahnhofstrasse 2 ). The tours are available in German, French, English, and Italian.

Kleiner Simplon Express

In summer, a small blue train called Small Simplon Express ( Kleiner Simplon Express in German) circles Brig-Glis and Naters in 30 minutes. During this trip, you’ll discover many exciting and historical facts about the region.

The train runs in the afternoon (around 4:00 PM) from the end of June to mid-September. Starting the third week of August, the train will only run on Wednesdays and Saturdays. You can buy your ticket from the train driver.

Brigerbad Thermal Baths

As well as the city itself, Brig includes Brigerbad , 43 small Alps, and mountain pastures. It is located a bit above Brig itself. 

Originally discovered by the Romans, Brigerbad thermal baths offer a beautiful view of the Alps. Together with the spa area, it is open from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM. With a surface area of 2,600 m 2 , it is the largest open-air thermal bath in the Alps. Up to 50 liters of 50°C thermal water per second come out of the springs in Brigerbad; these waters have been used to treat arthritis, rheumatism, and other ailments.

If you would rather head over to a swimming pool, you can go to the Swimming Pool of Geschina Brig ( Address: Geschinaweg 7 3900 Brig ) during the summer season. Here, they have multiple swimming pools, a long water slide, diving boards, beach volleyball, a kiosk, and a playground. The water temperature here is 24 to 25°C.

Simplon Pass

Just outside the town gates begins the Simplon Pass , one of the most beautiful Alpine passes in Switzerland. For centuries, Brig has been a transit point as well as a customs post for transport across the Simplon Pass. As Brig prospered with the Simplon Pass, it gradually overtook Naters village across the road, becoming an independent diocese.

Simplon Pass, 20 kilometers away from Brig, links Brig with Domodossola in Northern Italy. Thus, it connects the Pennine Alps of Switzerland to the Lepontine Alps of Italy. The pass lies 2,005 meters above sea level and is open all year round.

Sculptor Erwin Friedrich Baumann created the nine-meter-high eagle on the Simplon Pass. The charming village of Simplon Dorf , with its 310 residents and stone-roofed houses, lies just beyond the Simplon Pass at 1,476 meters above sea level.

World Nature Forum, Naters

The World Nature Forum in Naters is an interactive museum that people of all ages can visit to learn more about the Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is creative and informative. The exhibits here are available in four languages.

The World Nature Forum Museum is open Tuesdays to Sundays from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Please take note that the exhibition is closed between Christmas and New Year.

Excursions from Brig, Switzerland

Any Swiss map will show that Brig lies at the heart of Valais’ attractions. There are a variety of excursions within easy reach of Brig .

Here are some of the attractions near Brig that you can reach by public transport:

In addition to these attractions that you can reach by train, Brig, Rosswald, Termen, and Ried-Brig are also good starting points for various hikes in the region. For example, check out the nature path Achera Biela . This 24-hectare area contains a variety of valuable habitats, including traditional and near-natural arable crops, species-rich meadows, rocky steppes, bisses , and terraced dry stone walls.

Located 1,820 meters above sea level, Rosswald is accessible by road or cable car. A small bathing lake can be found near the mountain station. Apart from that, it offers a fantastic panoramic view and hiking trails through forests and mountains.

Termen also boasts a coffee roastery that you can visit, Caffè Sempione. You can also learn more about the region on a Valais mountain adventure path

Final Thoughts: Brig, Switzerland

It is worth considering Brig, Switzerland, even if most guidebooks recommend places like Lucerne , Zurich , Bern , or Geneva instead. Despite its small size, there are plenty of attractions to visit from here. Moreover, fast trains make it easy to get here from international airports.

One caveat to all of this is that Brig doesn’t have many hotels to choose from. Nevertheless, you can find wonderful accommodations if you book early. Here are some terrific hotel choices due to their excellent location in the heart of the town or near the train station:

Brig, Switzerland is a suitable option if you’re looking for a small alpine town set in Valais similar to Chur . It’s also easy to get to Zermatt from here. Alternatively, you can visit the Jungfrau Aletsch region, where you will find the country’s largest glacier.

Other places to visit in or near Brig are the following:

• Naters – Known for its historic buildings, this is one of the largest villages in Valais. In addition to the church, it is worth taking a look at the ossuary ( Beinhaus ).
• Red Mile ( Rote Meile ) – A foot and bike path between Naters and Bitsch.
• La Caverna – In a former military fortress, La Caverna’s culture center is home to the Swiss Guard Museum ( Gardemuseum ), the Museum of the Simplon Fortress ( Festungsmuseum ), and the Radiator Museum ( Strahlermuseum ).
• Grindji – From Brig, you can get to Grindji by walking near the Saltina River and Napoleon’s Bridge. The place has a grill area and places to sit.
• Ganter Bridge – It is the second longest spanning reinforced concrete bridge in Switzerland, after the Poya Bridge, at 678 meters.
• Simplon Dorf – A charming Walser village that is home to hotels, restaurants, and local businesses.
• Ecomuseum (Alter Gasthof Museum) – Stockalper, Napoleon, Simplon tunnel miners, Geo Chavez, and Life in Simplon are just a few of the topics presented at the museum.
• Gondo Gorge – This gorge is home to Alpine Ibexes and Chamois, as well as unusual plants like south alpine tulips.
• Fort Gondo – A 19th-century fort that was reinforced during the wars. The site can be visited with a guide.
• Gondo Gold Mine – Almost 120 years after being shut down, the Gondo gold mines are now a visitor attraction. Under expert guidance, you can go gold-seeking yourself in the mountains where the ancient Romans laboriously mined gold-bearing ore two thousand years ago.
• Laggintal – With 75 types of butterflies, Laggintal is one of the most interesting butterfly reserves in Europe. The area also has pretty waterfalls and a mountain with glaciers

If you want to stay in Valais and visit other destinations without having to travel two hours each way, Brig is a great place to stay. Brig is a great day trip destination as well as a base . This could also be a place to stay in Switzerland after exploring Italy before heading to France, Austria, or Germany.

Things To Do In Brig, Switzerland – Worth Stopping In

Brig is an alpine town of note, sitting in Central Southern Switzerland in the heart of the Swiss Alps and close to the Italian border.

What makes Brig, Switzerland, such a great city to base yourself in while exploring Switzerland is its access to almost all the famous things to see in the Swiss Alps. But it doesn’t stop there.

Brig is home to many cultural sites, history, ancient architecture, and more to explore. The alpine town dates back to the 11th century and was a Roman town. It is home to lovely castles, a palace, thermal baths, and even on the banks of the longest river in Switzerland, the Rhone.

Between the fantastic access to the Swiss Alps and the city’s offerings, Brig is an excellent place to spend a few days while traveling in Switzerland.

Stockalper Palace

One of the top things to do in Brig is to visit the Stockalper Palace . The Stockalper Palace in Brig showcases fantastic architecture and dates back to the 17th century.

It was built by a man called Kaspar Stockalper and was the biggest privately owned building in the country at one point.

Kaspar Stockalper’s wealth and success came from intelligent trading, and he ended up employing thousands of people and controlling the salt trade through Simplon Pass nearby.

The Stockalper Palace is home to 3 towers, each with water-drop roofs, but the real genius lies inside the Stockalper Palace. You must join a tour to get inside, but it is worth it.

The large courtyard inside the palace is stunning, as are the Italian Renaissance-style balusters and arcades. You will also find a beautiful courtyard, portraits of the Stockalper family, and learn about the history of the Simplon Pass.

The Stockalper Palace is big but not huge, and it will only take 1-2 hours to see the whole palace. Be sure to spend some time in the palace gardens, as they are stunning.

The Simplon Pass , which features heavily in the palace, is something you must see while in Brig. The Simplon Pass is one of the most famous scenic routes in the country as it stretches from Brig, winding its way through the Swiss Alps and to the Italian border.

You can travel along the high mountain pass any time of year and the Simplon Pass will also provide you access to skiing, hiking trails, and even historical landmarks.

While driving down the Simplon Pass, be sure to take in the fantastic views of the Swiss Alps, and the stunning countryside, and remember how the Simplon Pass was used for salt imports.

The landmarks worth seeing along Simplon Pass include the new and the old Ganter Bridge, Simplon Adler, and Altes Spittel.

The Ganter Bridge sits across a valley between two mountains and offers magical views. As you continue up the Simplon Pass, you will then come to the Simplon Adler , a granite statue of an eagle dating back to WWII and was created by the guards who watched over the Simplon Pass.

The final landmark worth seeing on the Simplon Pass is Altes Spittel, an old granite refuge built by Kaspar Stockalper for travelers and tradesmen crossing the Simplon Pass.

World Nature Forum

Once you have seen the Simplon Pass, the World Nature Forum has to be next. The World Nature Forum is an interactive museum that showcases the first UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Swiss Alps, Jungfrau-Aletsch.

It is renowned as one of the best museums in Europe and is a must-see while in Brig. The museum provides an immersive experience of the Alps that dazzles the senses.

The activities included anything from smelling the flowers of the Swiss Alps to experiencing amazing scenery on huge screens. You can also go on a virtual ride on the old Jungfrau railway car, which dates back to 1912 and have a 360 experience of the interior.

The walk to the museum is stunning as you cross the Rhone River. It costs just CHF 18 to enter but is free with a Swiss Pass, so be sure to get one of these beforehand.

Quillen Brigerbad

After a long walk along a hiking trail or biking down one of the many mountain bike routes, or seeing the Stockalper Castle, go and relax at Quillen Brigerbad , aka the Brigerbad Thermal Facility.

Brigerbad is home to thermal baths full of wellness that can even help cure ailments. A long soak in the thermal baths will have you back on top form in no time and here is how.

Bridgerbad is the biggest open-air hot spring in Switzerland. The water temperature ranges from 21 to 50 degrees Celsius and contains minerals such as sulfates, calcium, sodium, and lithium.

The baths are great for soothing muscles but can also help with ailments such as cardiovascular diseases, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and more.

Brigerbad is open all year round and has an indoor pool, an outdoor pool, a thermal spa, a wellness center, and a restaurant. It is well worth heading there for some pampering!

A fun thing to do while you are in Brig is visiting the Aletschspa as it is another great place to relax after spending some time on the ski slopes or hiking up in the mountains.

Located in the heart of Brig along the banks of the River Rhone, the Aletschspa offers saunas, indoor pools, and outdoor pools, all set to different temperatures, floating pools, and more.

Driving In The Alps: All The Info You Need To Plan A Trip

Airvolution.

Why not paraglide or hang glide through the Rhone Valley and over everything you learned at the World Nature Forum?

Head to Airvolution and meet with experienced pilots to book a flight and experience the most spectacular views of the Pennine Alps.

You will take off from high up in the mountains at the flying site and gently float your way down while seeing incredible scenery such as the Aletsch Glacier.

They run flights all year round so you can do this in winter and summer. You can also learn how to fly above this fantastic destination with an introductory course run 4 times a year.

If you have never paraglided before, it is a fantastic experience and there is nowhere better to do it than deep in the Swiss Alps.

Apropos Paintball

If you are traveling with kids or in a large group, why not head to the Apropos Paintball Center, where you can divide into teams and have fun shooting each other all while gazing across the Alps?

The Apropos Paintball Center is fun, but you will want to book in advance as this place fills up quickly.

You can go paintballing here all year round, as they have indoor and outdoor paintball areas. You can either book as a group and take one of the whole arenas or come on your own and join in with others.

Stockalper Trail

One way of seeing the entire Simplon Pass is by hiking along the Stockalper trail, known as Stockalperweg.

Stockalperweg was the mule track used by traders crossing the pass and today, it is the main hiking route that takes you to the Swiss-Italian border.

The Stockalper Trail is formed of three stages, and you can do it in a single day if you are fit. It takes about 12 hours in total and here is what each stage looks like.

The first part of the hike takes you from Bird to the Simplon Pass. It is a 12 km hike that takes about 6 hours and you will see some magical things, including Saltinaschlucht Gorge, Taverntal Valley, Stockalper Palace, and the Hospice.

Next is Simplon Pass to Simplon Dorf, which is about 9 km and should take approximately 3.25 hours. You’ll pass by stunning mountain scenes, alpine settlements, hamlets, and Simplon Dorf Village.

The last stage is Simplon Dorf to Gondo on the border. It takes about 3 hours to cover the 8 km and you will see the Gondoschlucht Gorge and stunning mountain scenery. And you can stay at the Gondo Stockalperturm Hotel Restaurant at the end or have lunch.

Swiss Guard Museum

A trip to the Swiss Guard Museum is another thing that can not be missed while you are staying in Brig.

The Swiss Guard is a hand-selected elite unit that is stationed at the Vatican and its sole duty is to protect it and the Pope. To be selected for the Swiss Guard, you must be an unmarried Swiss male who has completed basic training and is a Catholic.

If you have been to the Vatican in Rome, you might remember seeing the Swiss Guard, dressed in very colorful but comical uniforms.

The Swiss Guard Museum is in Naters, the guard’s former military fortress. Walking around the fortress is an exhibit in itself. Built in 1939, it housed up to 200 Swiss Guards who protected the Simplon Pass and the Simplon railway tunnel during WWII.

Naters is a bit like a little underground village, and it was a secret base until 2002, after which it was made into a museum in 2006.

Inside you will learn about the history of the Swiss Guards, why they go to Rome, plus see historical photos and portraits. You will also find personal items donated by guards to get a sense of who they really were/are.

The best time of year to visit Brig, Switzerland, depends on what you want to get out of your experience there. Would you like it to be sunny, warm, and ripe for hiking in the mountains or covered with snow so you can ski?

If you are looking for a warmer experience, May and June are the best time to be in Brig. The weather is excellent, the mountains are accessible, and it is before the high season of July & August so you will benefit from a quieter town and more affordable accommodation rates.

For those who want to combine discovering Brig with some skiing, any time from December to March is an excellent time to visit.

What is the language spoken in Brig, Switzerland?

Being located in the Canton of Valais, where 62.6% of the population speak Swiss German, it makes sense that Swiss German is the most common language in Brig.

But, up to 50% of Swiss people are multilingual and can often speak French, Italian, or English, so chances are you can get by if you don’t speak any German.

Is Brig, Switzerland Worth Visiting?

Brig, is 100% worth visiting in my eyes. It is an alpine town drenched in history that sits within a UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Swiss Alps.

Between the stunning natural surroundings to explore, the immense history of the town, the Simplon Pass, and all the other great things to do in the town, it is a place everyone should spend a few nights in while traveling in Switzerland.

In short, Brig is a town in the southern part of Switzerland, specifically in the region known as the Canton of Valais. If you’re coming from northern Italy or Milan , Brig is the first Swiss town you’ll encounter.

Some choose to make Brig their home base for exploring the Swiss Alps because of its strategic location. From Brig, it’s easy to get to popular places like Zermatt , Montreux , and Kandersteg . Plus, other beautiful villages in the Swiss Alps .

But Brig isn’t just a starting point or a home base. It has its own interesting sights that many people don’t know about. If you’ve been to Switzerland before and are looking for something different for your second visit, exploring these sights in Brig could give you a unique Swiss experience.

But to put it simply, Brig is unique in Switzerland in its own way, with a mix of lesser-known history and attractions that are good for our well-being. The connections Brig has to the Simplon Pass, Napoleon, and the Stockalper Family, along with its thermal baths, certainly distinguish Brig from other destinations in the country.

When you visit Brig and its nearby attractions, you’ll come across some stunning views. These aren’t the usual ones you see on the internet, like the beautiful landscapes of Lauterbrunnen in the Jungfrau Region or the famous Matterhorn in Zermatt .

But keep in mind, while these views in Brig are unique, they might not be as impressive as the ones from the just-mentioned other attractions in Switzerland.

In Brig, and especially in the Simplon Pass, you’ll find some viewpoints that are quite dramatic. This area is dotted with structures and landmarks that add a touch of charm and mystery.

However, if you’re someone who’s visited the mountains a lot, particularly around cities near the Italian Dolomites like Bolzano , Trento , and Cortina d’Ampezzo , these views might seem familiar to you.

Still, there are hidden gems waiting to be discovered. One of them is the Stockalper Castle — a historical and architectural attraction is right in the heart of Brig. Another is the Thermalquellen Brigerbad AG which is Switzerland’s largest open-air hot spring.

Overall, I think Brig is a great place for those who love to wander and explore. It offers a chance to discover a side of Switzerland that is often not highlighted on social media.

I also think that Brig is a strategic base for exploring other attractions in southern Switzerland, not just because of its proximity. Most importantly, Brig is known for its thermal baths, which are a wonderful way to relax after a day of adventures.

Best Things to Do in Brig

One of the things that’s so nice about Brig is its town center. It’s covered in cobblestones, giving it a preserved feel. Walking around this area is quite a treat. The mountains in the distance add to the experience, blending with the view of the lovely buildings.

In Brig, you’ll also find many cafes and restaurants that provide outdoor seating. This is particularly true during certain seasons. After a day of exploring, these establishments are great places to sit down and eat. For a dining experience with a view, the eateries near and below Hotel de Londres are worth a try. They provide a stunning view of Brig’s main square.

But there’s more to Brig than just its town center. There are five attractions in and around Brig you can visit/do to make the most of your visit.

1. Stockalper Palace

If you’re looking for the best things to do in Brig, the Stockalper Palace is a great place to start. This 17th-century building is a well-known landmark in Brig. In its early days, it was the largest privately-owned building in Switzerland.

The palace was built by Kaspar Stockalper, a wealthy and influential merchant. He was a savvy businessman who employed 5000 people and controlled the salt trade via the Simplon Pass.

The Stockalper Palace is known for its three towers, each with a unique water-drop roof design. Interestingly, Stockalper named the towers after the Three Wise Men from the Bible: Caspar, Melchior, and Baltazar.

If you’re interested in architecture, you’ll appreciate the palace’s interior, particularly the spacious courtyard. Here, visitors can admire the stunning arcades designed in the Italian Renaissance Style, complemented by striking balusters.

To explore the palace, you’ll typically need to join a tour. Inside, you’ll find a gallery showcasing the Stockalper family, the history of the Simplon Pass, and various artifacts from the Upper Valais region. It’s a fascinating glimpse into the life of a wealthy capitalist in the 17th century.

One of the highlights inside the palace is a painting of Stockalper, positioned between two windows. While the palace is large, it’s not overwhelmingly so. A visit here usually lasts around 1 to 2 hours.

The palace is conveniently located in the center of Brig. If you’re staying in town, it’s just a short walk away. And don’t forget to snap a souvenir photo in the palace’s southwest gardens. You can use Google Maps for easy navigation.

I’d like to share something with you. Brig isn’t the only place in Switzerland that boasts a castle. Gruyères is another such place, and like Brig, it has a well-preserved medieval area. But Gruyères has a different charm. It’s more old-fashioned and offers a variety of cheese dishes and chocolates. So, don’t miss out on exploring Gruyères. There are so many reasons why Gruyères is a place worth visiting .

2. World Nature Forum

The World Nature Forum is a fascinating museum under the management of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. It showcases the Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch, the first of its kind in the Alps to be recognized by UNESCO. This museum is highly regarded in Europe and was honored with the Sustainability Award at the European Museum Forum in 2019.

If you’re in Brig, a visit to the World Nature Forum is a must.

The museum offers a wealth of knowledge about the Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch. It provides a sensory experience of what it’s like to be in the Alps, with a variety of activities to engage in. From viewing mountain photographs to watching breathtaking landscapes on a panoramic screen, and even smelling the fragrant flowers of the Swiss Alps, there’s something for everyone.

One of the standout features of the World Nature Forum is the Jungfrau railway car. This is a replica of the wagon that made its maiden voyage to Jungfraujoch in 1912.

If you find an exhibit particularly interesting, you can “collect” it using a badge. The forum welcomes visitors from Tuesday to Sunday, between 10am and 5pm. Note that it’s closed on Mondays. If you have a Swiss Travel Pass , you can walk in for free. 3. Simplon Pass

If you love the outdoors or have already visited the World Nature Forum and Stockalper Palace, your next stop in Brig should be Simplon Pass. While it might seem like just another road, it’s actually one of Switzerland’s most famous scenic drives.

Simplon Pass runs from Brig all the way to the Swiss-Italian border. Along this route, you’ll come across several historical landmarks that will make your drive even more interesting.

What’s more, Simplon Pass offers a variety of activities for all seasons. You can hike in the summer, ski in the winter, and visit museums when the weather isn’t great.

When you visit Simplon Pass, make sure to check out the landmarks. Don’t forget to take a photo or a selfie as a memento of your visit to this scenic drive.

There are three landmarks to see, all in scenic locations. So, it is really compelling to come and visit them:

Ganter Bridge

Nestled between two mountains, a bridge serves as a link — Ganter Bridge. This impressive structure, built in a smooth, unbroken frame system, stands out due to its light color.

Interestingly, there are two versions of this bridge, known as the Ganter Bridge.

The new Ganter Bridge, larger than its predecessor, is the first one you’ll see if you’re coming from Brig. It’s situated ahead of the old Ganter Bridge, which is further into the valley. To reach the old bridge from the new one, simply travel 800 meters east.

The old Ganter Bridge, constructed of bricks, has a nostalgic feel to it. A pathway can be found beneath it. The views from either bridge are worth capturing, particularly on a clear, sunny day.

While sightseeing, remember to take a moment to appreciate the surroundings. The landscape is stunning, and the air is refreshingly clean. Take a deep breath and savor the experience.

Simplon Adler

As you ascend the Simplon Pass, the iconic Simplon Adler comes into view. This granite eagle statue, constructed during World War II, stands as a symbol of vigilance. It was erected by the 11 Mountain Brigade in honor of the “Watch of the Simplon.”

The Simplon Adler is located in a stunning area of the Simplon Pass. It’s conveniently situated near the tourist information center for Simplonpass, as well as a cafe and a hotel. If you’re hiking up to the pass, this spot is ideal for a break and some refreshments.

Altes Spittel

A short distance from the Simplon Adler, as you continue south on the Simplon Pass, you’ll come across Altes Spittel. This five-story granite building, constructed by Kaspar Stockalper, once provided shelter for travelers and merchants. Despite its age, the building remains in use and can house groups of 20 to 66 people.

While it’s unclear whether anyone can enter, the exterior alone is worth a look. Like the Simplon Adler, it’s situated in a breathtaking location.

Visiting such a historic site offers a unique opportunity. It allows you to momentarily step away from the present and imagine a different era. It’s as if you’re starring in your own film, set in the past. So, take a moment to truly experience the feeling of being alive.

Stockalperweg

In the past, when Altes Spittel served as a refuge for merchants and travelers, they would traverse a mule track in the Simplon Pass. This path is now known as Stockalperweg. In English, Stockalperweg is referred to as the Stockalper Trail. If you’re keen to explore the Simplon Pass in depth, hiking along the Stockalperweg is a great option.

Today, the trail remains open to the public. While it’s no longer used for trade, it’s become a popular spot for leisurely hikes.

This trail has three stages, according to the official website of  Brig-Simplon Tourismus . And if you have plans to hike the Simplon Pass, you will traverse these parts of the scenic drive:

First Stage: Brig to Simplon Pass 

• Hike Duration : 6 hours
• Distance : 11.9 kilometers
• Overall Elevation Gain : 1606 meters
• Sceneries to see : Saltinaschlucht Gorge, Taverntal valley, Simplonpass
• Landmarks to see : Stockalper Palace, Hospice

  Second Stage: Simplon Pass to Simplon Dorf

• Hike Duration : 3.25 hours
• Distance : 9 kilometers
• Overall Elevation Gain : -540 meters 
• Sceneries to see : Small Alp settlements and hamlets, Simplon Dorf Village, Alpine cultural landscape

  Third Stage: Simplon Dorf to Gondo (Swiss-Italian Border)

• Hike Duration : 3 hours
• Distance : 8.6 kilometers
• Overall Elevation Gain : -850 meters
• Sceneries to see : Gondoschlucht gorge, Old Army Barracks perched in breathtaking mountain scenery, Gondo Stockalperturm Hotel Restaurant

Hiking would only be tiring during the first stage. However, the pass has several bus stops. You can skip all the steep parts of the Simplon Pass if you want.

Museo Sempione

As you journey through the scenic Simplon Pass in Switzerland, you’ll encounter charming settlements nestled amidst the picturesque Swiss countryside. One such place is the town of Simplon Dorf.

In this town, there’s a unique museum known as Museo Sempione. This museum houses a collection of artifacts from the Simplon Pass and photographs depicting the lives of the local inhabitants. It offers a fascinating glimpse into the region’s history and is a great find for those interested in uncovering lesser-known historical gems.

Fort Gondo is another museum you can visit in Simplon Pass. In the past, it served as a defense station to guard the country from potential invasions.

Now, it’s a museum that displays the military life of yesteryears. Inside, you’ll find several machine guns that you can even hold for a selfie.

You’ll also get the opportunity to step through the metal doors of the heavily fortified barracks. A visit to Fort Gondo might give you the feeling of gearing up for a zombie apocalypse, with the mountains acting as your final sanctuary.

The exhibits here are diverse. They include everything from military kitchens to underground escape tunnels.

4. Rosswald​

When you’re in Brig, you don’t need to go far for an outdoor adventure.

Just take bus #632 to Ried Brig, Rufigraben bus station. From there, it’s a short walk to the Ried Brig cable car station, which takes you straight to Rosswald. This small, car-free village sits atop a mountain and offers a unique atmosphere and breathtaking views of the Swiss Alps. It’s also a great place for outdoor activities during your stay in Brig.

In the winter, Rosswald transforms into a snowy paradise with beautiful chalets and wooden houses that look stunning against the white landscape. If you’re traveling with children, they’ll love the Kinderland Rosswald event. The village becomes a large snow playground where kids aged 2 and above can have fun.

5. Thermalquellen Brigerbad AG

After a day of physical activities in the city or at Simplon Pass, a thermal bath at Brigerbad is a great way to unwind. This is one of the things you can do in Brig. Brigerbad is the largest open-air hot spring in Switzerland. Its warm waters are rich in minerals like lithium, sodium, calcium, and sulfate.

The water temperature at Brigerbad varies from 21 to 50 degrees Celsius. This range is ideal for easing muscle tension and can help alleviate various health issues. What’s nicer? The waters at Brigerbad can help with conditions like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, neurological disorders, chronic bronchitis, and cardiovascular diseases.

More Things to Do in Brig: Day Trips

Brig might not have the most famous attractions in Switzerland. However, if you’re staying in Brig, you’re just a train ride away from some of the most stunning places in the Swiss Alps. You can travel to west or east of Brig, Montreux and Andermatt. Or you can go south or north of Brig, Zermatt and Jungfrau Region. In this section, I’ll specifically show you where you can go for a day trip from Brig.

Rhone Valley

Rhone Valley, often overlooked due to Switzerland’s more famous attractions, is more than just Swiss towns, villages, and stunning mountain passes.

Did you know that from this region, you can see the lower end of the Aletsch Glacier, the longest glacier in the Alps? You can get the view from the mountain village of Bettmeralp. It’s just a 12-minute bus ride (#142) and a cable car ride away from Brig.

There’s so much more to explore in Rhone Valley. You can start your journey with my list of the most picturesque villages in the Swiss Alps .

Zermatt, a popular spot in Switzerland, is just a short 1 hour and 25 minute journey from Brig. This town in the mountains serves as the entrance to the Matterhorn, one of the most well-known mountains in Switzerland. If you’ve ever had a Toblerone chocolate, you’ve seen the Matterhorn – it’s the mountain pictured on the box.

But there’s more to Zermatt than just the Matterhorn. Zermatt is home to a variety of hidden gems , from small hamlets to beautiful alpine lakes. These places are definitely worth a visit. To make your trip to Zermatt even better, check out my guide on visiting Zermatt .

Kandersteg, like Zermatt, is an alpine village that serves as an entrance to another Swiss gem – Oeschinensee. This lake, encircled by mountains that reach up to three thousand meters high, is a sight to see. It’s especially beautiful during calm weather when the lake surface mirrors the rugged mountain faces around it.

But Oeschinensee isn’t just about the view. It’s also a great place for hiking, with trails that offer stunning and sometimes thrilling experiences. The lake shores are ideal for picnics, and in the summer, you can enjoy watersports like kayaking and swimming in the scenic surroundings.

But there’s more to Kandersteg than just Oeschinensee. There are many other activities and attractions that make a visit to Kandersteg worthwhile .

What’s great about Kandersteg as a destination from Brig? It’s the easy and fast travel. You can get from Brig to Kandersteg on a direct train that only takes between 45 minutes to an hour.

Jungfrau Region

If you’re planning a trip to Switzerland, don’t miss out on the Jungfrau Region. This area is home to the stunning Lauterbrunnen valley, the end of the Aletsch Glacier, the vibrant blue Lake Brienz, the fairytale-like Lake Thun, and the exciting Grindelwald .

What’s great is that it’s just a short 1 to 1.5 hour train journey from Brig to Interlaken . Interlaken serves as the main hub for all the attractions in the Jungfrau Region.

Brig and Sion are both in the Canton of Valais and are not far apart. Sion, the capital of the canton of Valais, is just a 45-minute train ride from Brig. Sion is unique because of its historical landmarks, including a castle and a church. These sites sit on a hill and offer views of the town and the surrounding mountains. Sion is a place that wanderers would enjoy.

For photographers, Sion offers dramatic scenes, especially from the viewpoints on the hilltop landmarks. And if you visit the cathedral on the hill, remember to look at the organ. Montreux is a beautiful city near the Swiss Alps , and it’s just a quick 1.5-hour train ride from Brig. This town, nestled between Lake Geneva and the Swiss Alps, is a must-visit, especially during the summer Jazz festival which adds to its charm.

There are so many beautiful places in the world, but Brig, Switzerland is a true gem. Nestled among the snow-capped Alps, this town is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts and those who love to explore new cultures. In this guide, we will tell you everything you need to know about Brig and what to do when you visit!

What to do in Brig

Brig is a small town, but there is plenty to do. For starters, the Aletsch Glacier is nearby and is a must-see.

Aletsch Glacier

This glacier is the largest in Europe and is simply breathtaking and is one of the main attractions in Brig.

This natural wonder is over 12 miles long and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. If you love hiking, then you will definitely want to explore the Aletsch forest, which surrounds the glacier. There are also many ski resorts in the area, so you can enjoy some time on the slopes!

The Great Aletsch Glacier is a stunning example of primordial grandeur. The best location to appreciate the size and unique magic of the Great Aletsch Glacier is high on the Moosfluh, Hohfluh, Bettmerhorn, and Eggishorn viewpoints. Every visitor is riveted and inspired by this massive ice river that stretches for 20 kilometers from its source in the Jungfrau region (at 4000 m) down to the Massa Gorge, around 2500 m below.

Some interesting facts about Aletsch Glacier:

• 20 km length. This makes the Great Aletsch Glacier the longest ice stream in the Alps.
• 10 billion tonnes is the weight of the Great Aletsch Glacier.
• 800 metres is the thickest ice on the glacier. This is located at Konkordiaplatz.
• 79 square kilometres is the surface of the Great Aletsch Glacier.

This is the time to visit Matterhorn. Nature vacations in the Alps at the base of Switzerland’s famous landmark.

The shape of Matterhorn is Triangular. A tooth-shaped crag that reaches up into the sky. On the horizon, alone. A magnet for climbers, aesthetic emblem, and mountain with good proportions. Rugged rock with magical light. Playing in a sea of clouds and horizontal coloring

There are several attractions to be found in the Matterhorn region. Gornergrat is one of the most popular excursions. There is a viewing platform on this three-thousand-metre mountain ridge with a breathtaking perspective of the Matterhorn and the surrounding alpine landscape.

The Matterhorn may also be admired from the Rothorn. The highest summer ski area in Europe, the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise is open 365 days a year and features a glacier playground for kids of all ages. When the sun isn’t shining, there’s still much to do!

The Museum de la Montagne describes Zermatt’s historical evolution from a mountain hamlet to an Alpine holiday resort, as well as displaying numerous photographs and facts about the Matterhorn’s first ascent.

Stockalper Castle

The Stockalper Palace in Brig, which was constructed in the 17th century by Kaspar Stockalper, is well-known. The cellars, arcades, and chambers of the palace are worth seeing before dreaming beneath rose bushes in the palace garden with a view of the monastery, Jesuit church, and Old Town with its towers – it’s simply wonderful! Brig (French: Brigue , Italian: Briga ), officially Brig-Glis , is a municipality of 13,000 people (2018) in Valais in Switzerland . The municipality is made up of two neighbouring towns, Brig and Glis , with a third independent town Naters across the Rhone river to the north. It is a regional centre and a border town of sorts. It does not lie on the Italian border, but is the last stop for trains before going through the Simplon tunnel. The Simplon Tunnel opened in 1906 was the longest railway tunnel in the world until the late 1980s and continues to form part of an important north-south link across the Alps.

Brig used to be the most important transport hub in the region, as the old Lötschberg line from Berne , the Simplon line from Domodossola and Milan , the InterRegio trains from Lausanne as well as the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn towards Andermatt and Zermatt all converge here. Since the opening of the new Lötschberg base tunnel, a lot of this has been diverted to Visp , making Brig quieter than it used to be. Nevertheless it remains an important town, and all international trains (EC) still stop here as the last stop before Italy, and not in Visp.

By train [ edit ].

Brig is the end of the major train lines from Geneva and Zurich as well as the old Lötschberg line. The Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn (the tracks are on the square in front of the railway station) also stops here with trains towards Zermatt , Andermatt and Disentis and Brig is a stop on the Glacier Express. All international trains from and to Domodossola and Milan stop here, as it is the first stop after the Swiss-Italian border.

By bus [ edit ]

Buses stop at landing bays in front of the railway station building in between the main station and the MGB tracks.

By car [ edit ]

There is a car-carrying shuttle train through the Simplon Tunnel from Iselle di Trasquera railway station in Italy to Brig.

Get around [ edit ]

While there are some buses with stops around town the city centre is quite small and nice to walk through. Parts of it are pedestrian only and all the main sights are within walking distance.

If you want to get out a bit further during summer (for instance to Brigerbad for swimming), there is a 46.31874 7.98461 2 free bike rental close to the railway station. It's run as a social project and is free for the first four hours. Be sure to check the website first as opening hours frequently change.

Brig is an alpine town in the southern region of Switzerland, it is situated in the Valais canton and is a commonplace that many people visit. The area sits at the foot of Simplon Pass, and this leads to the Italian border. Brig is one of the stops on the glacier pass, and it is famous for its steam baths as well as St. Sebastian chapel. Stockalper castle is in Brig, and it was built in the 17th century by a merchant who made the pass a trading route. 

There are different places where you can have fun in this region if you visit Switzerland for the first time or second time. The Simplon Pass, thermal baths, Aletschspa, among others.

The Brig was first mentioned in the year 1215 and the first people who inhabited during the Bronze Age. During the Roman era, the city was positively influenced by the Romans, and they brought them with architectural and cultural effects making a perfect tourist destination. The town of Brig is famous because it is ideal for starting excursions.

It is close to hiking and skin regions. Besides, it has stately houses, exceptional hotels, and cozy inns, which may tempt you to linger there for a while. This location is also famous for skiing during winter because it is rich in pistes and the best skiing locations. Explore the simplon pass.

The Simplon Pass is a high mountain pass that is located between the Lepontine and Pennine alps. The pass is at 2005 meters above sea level, and it connects Domodossola in Piedmont and the canton of Valais.

Simplon Pass has villages on each side, and this may include Gondo in the swiss side and other Italian communities along the line. It was built beneath the pass’s vicinity in the 20th century and is meant to carry traffic between Italy and Switzerland. The lowest point of the pass lies five hundred meters above sea level in Po and Rhone Switzerland.

Enjoy Thermal Bath at Quillen Brigerbad

One of the most fun activities that you can enjoy in this region during the winter is visiting the thermal baths. The Brigerbad thermal facility was opened in December 2014. This location serves as an oasis for both the mind and the soul.

The diverse outdoor pools and gigantic water slides are perfect for your enjoyment as you relax and unwind after a long period. There is a spa area that spreads over two floors, and this houses a sauna and Hamman as well as a wellness restaurant. His palace in Brig is a testimony of this.

The building was constructed in the 17th century, and it is an architectural gem. It is important to note that the building was the largest private building in Switzerland in the 17th century. The palace is gilded with onion domes that represent his wealth. Besides, there is a little museum highlighting the history of his life and what he did during his time.
