Brain Balance Program

Https://www.brainbalancecenters.com/our-program, what is brain balance ® .

Brain Balance ® is a non-medical cognitive training program designed to help improve focus, behavior, hyperactivity, social skills, anxiety, and academic performance in children.

The Brain Balance® program is available onsite and at-home with virtual coaching. It comprises one hour of daily cognitive training activities, paired with a nutrition plan. Program length is based on each child’s unique needs and goals.

How does Brain Balance ® work?

Brain Balance® is designed to strengthen weaker areas of the brain through sensory engagement, physical development, and cognitive exercises paired with nutritional guidance. An initial assessment identifies individual strengths and weaknesses, then the program is personalized to a child’s needs and development level, building progressively as they advance. A coach supports the child and their caregivers through the program.

Who is Brain Balance ® for?

Brain Balance® is intended for children 4 years and older, teens, and adults striving to improve focus, keep organized, control impulses, and stay calm.

Brain Balance® does not require a medical diagnosis nor does it clinically diagnose medical conditions, but it may benefit children with ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, processing disorders, or learning disorders.

How much does Brain Balance ® cost?

Brain Balance® is a customized program, so the total number of recommended sessions varies from person to person. For a quote, contact a local Brain Balance® Center or call the national line at 800-877-5500.

What studies have been done on Brain Balance ® ?

A small, exploratory study from McLean Hospital, a Harvard Medical School teaching hospital, referenced on the Brain Balance® website, found that Brain Balance® could have clinical, behavioral, and neurobiological effects similar to stimulant medication in alleviating some ADHD symptoms in children. These findings were based on subjective parent reports, as well as clinician ratings, and brain imaging and Quotient test results. However, this study included just 16 children with ADHD and eight children without ADHD — a small sample size — and noted improvement after 75 Brain Balance® sessions conducted over 15 weeks, which assumes five sessions per week.

Cambridge Brain Sciences , a private brain health assessment company, collaborated with Brain Balance® on a study that found children who completed three months of the program displayed significant improvements in cognition, particularly in areas of memory, reasoning, verbal ability, and concentration. The study followed 478 participants (aged 4 to 18) as they completed three one-hour sessions every week for three months or fewer. Researchers found improvements in attention and concentration among 4- to 6-year-old participants; improvements in planning and executive function were noted in participants aged 7 and older. These findings came from participants’ results on 12 tasks completed before and after the three-month Brain Balance® program that evaluated short-term memory, visuospatial working memory, episodic memory, deductive reasoning, mental rotation, feature-based attention and concentration, planning and executive function, visuospatial processing, verbal reasoning, cognitive processing, and verbal working memory. Study designer and author Rebecca Jackson works for Brain Balance® and study analyst Conor J. Wild provides consulting services to Cambridge Brain Sciences.

Research published in the Journal of Mental Health and Clinical Psychology found that “75% of [Brain Balance® program participants] showed a 20% improvement or more in panic or anxiety attacks after program participation, and 25% of children demonstrated an 85.7% improvement or more, with an average of 49.4% (SD = 45.6) and a median of 60%.” The study focused on children, aged 4 to 17 years, who were at or below developmental milestones and evaluated the parent-reported changes in their behavior before and after undergoing five to six months of Brain Balance®. These findings were based on archived survey data from approximately 2,200 students enrolled at Brain Balance® Achievement Centers and did not compare participants’ results to those of a control group. Primary study author Rebecca Jackson works for Brain Balance®.

Some research findings shared by Brain Balance® have been met with skepticism. The Association for Science in Autism Treatment published an article titled, “ Is There Science Behind That? Brain Balance ” that states the following: “The materials that have been published on the efficacy of Brain Balance® show that most involve testimonials, self-reports, and only a few, low-quality research studies. All of these elements of ‘proof’ that Brain Balance® is effective are weak in terms of empirical evidence and should be considered with caution.”

The ADDitude Guide to Brain Training for ADHD

Parents pay thousands for 'brain training' to help kids with ADHD and autism. But does it work?

OXFORD, Mich. — It was 4 p.m. on a Monday afternoon, time for Izak Lopez, 6, to remove one sock — just one — and get ready for the training program his parents say has drastically improved his life and theirs.

Izak’s coach at his training center in this suburb of Detroit used a paper clip to attach a piece of felt dabbed with peppermint oil to the right side Izak’s shirt collar. She put a small clicking metronome on the left side of his collar and added “shakers” — vibrating bands — to his left arm and shin. She then gave him a pair of glasses with purple lenses and a blinking light so that Izak’s senses would get constant stimulation as he made his way through the exercises that are central to a program his parents credit with reducing the violent tantrums that used to torment him and his family.

A week later, 1,300 miles away in a center run by a different company with a view of the mountains in Colorado Springs, Kyle Gregory, 9, was also training to the nerve-wracking pulse of a metronome. He was trying to remember where on a chart his trainer had placed a pair of cards before she could count to 10.

Both children have been diagnosed with autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD.

Both have struggled at home and at school. Both have tried interventions recommended by doctors that their parents didn’t think benefited them enough.

So both of their families have reorganized their lives and spent thousands of dollars to enroll in intensive after-school “brain training” programs that offer the promise of permanent changes to the human mind.

The programs are part of a fast-growing industry that’s based on the premise that targeted games and exercises can rewire the brain to boost memory, sharpen thinking or decrease the challenges associated with anxiety, autism, ADHD and other disorders. Brick-and-mortar training centers like Brain Balance Achievement Centers, which Izak attends, and LearningRx, Kyle’s program, are just one piece of a $2 billion global brain technology market that is increasingly going around the medical industry and marketing directly to consumers.

Isak's parents credit the Brain Balance program with reducing the violent tantrums that used to torment him and his family.

But the premise behind the programs has faced significant criticism from doctors and scientists who warn that some are making dubious claims. These personalized programs can cost $12,000 or more for six months of training, three days a week. Families have gone into debt or turned to crowdfunding sites to pay for them.

“They’re selling hope,” said Eric Rossen, the director of professional development and standards for the National Association of School Psychologists. “These organizations are not necessarily predatory, but they are definitely there and almost chasing the parents who are desperate, who are overwhelmed and who feel that they have no recourse.”

As the number of children diagnosed with ADHD and autism surges in the U.S., according to federal data, and as parents become exasperated with treatments that don’t work or involve medications that carry the risk of side effects, neurotechnology industry analysts predict the demand for programs like these will only grow.

NBC News spoke with more than a dozen scientists and experts who said that while there’s promise in some forms of brain training , the field is so new that many companies are making claims that go far beyond what they can prove.

That hasn’t stopped families from enrolling. NBCNews spoke to 22 parents of children who enrolled in Brain Balance or LearningRx, two of the largest one-on-one training programs, and many described positive results.

“LearningRx makes you use your brain in a different way than you do in school,” said Kyle’s mother, Alana Gregory, who says her son is focusing better and is less likely to hit other children than he was before he started the program in August. “It’s giving him skills to help when he is frustrated. And when he's not as frustrated, we don't have behavior issues.”

But other parents say they’ve seen only minor improvements — if any — despite months of hard work and high bills.

“The whole thing is a hoax,” said Atheer Sabti, who took out a $12,500 loan in 2017 to pay for a six-month Brain Balance program in Plano, Texas, to help his then 12-year-old son, who was getting into trouble and struggling to focus in school.

“They took my money,” Sabti said, “and my son was the same.”

‘We want science to drive treatment’

Much of the growth in brain training is in apps and games that people use at home or in school, said Alvaro Fernandez, CEO of SharpBrains, a research firm that tracks the neurotechnology industry. The global market for direct-to-consumer technology grew from $475 million in 2012 to $1.9 billion last year, Fernandez said.

Those numbers don’t include franchises like Brain Balance or LearningRx, which Fernandez says are more difficult to track financially. But these centers are now in most major U.S. cities. Brain Balance has 108 locations and said it brought in $51.3 million last year. LearningRx has 70 centers in the U.S. as well as 85 centers called BrainRx around the globe. The company declined to provide revenue numbers but says it hopes to add eight U.S. centers and 20 international centers next year.

Other companies include Neurocore Brain Performance Centers, which made headlines in 2017 when U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos disclosed that she and her husband are major shareholders.

Groups that advocate for people with autism and ADHD, including Autism Speaks and Children and Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, or CHADD, warn parents to be wary of companies like these that claim to address a long list of disorders without much scientific proof.

“We want science to drive treatment and intervention, not just anecdotes,” said Max Wiznitzer, a pediatric neurologist in Cleveland and the co-chair of CHADD’s professional advisory board.

Brain training companies are careful to comply with federal advertising laws, avoiding phrases like “treat” or “cure.” But some companies have run into trouble. LearningRx paid $200,000 in 2016 to settle charges by the Federal Trade Commission about deceptive claims.

LearningRx maintained that the FTC had unfairly applied medical standards to an educational company, but decided that fighting in court would have been too expensive.

Neurocore, a program that blends diet, exercise, clinical talk therapy and an intervention called neurofeedback that involves attaching electrodes to people’s heads, last year agreed to alter its marketing when an advertising review board objected to ads promoting cures for a host of disorders. But just last month, Neurocore was the subject of a complaint filed with the FTC by the ad watchdog Truth in Advertising.

“They’ve continued to market in a really inappropriate way,” said Bonnie Patten, Truth in Advertising’s executive director. “They’re marketing unapproved medical devices as being able to treat ailments such as ADHD, anxiety, depression, migraines and memory loss when there's no reliable scientific evidence.”

Neurocore CEO Mark Murrison points to research showing that neurofeedback works, though scientists say it has not been fully proven . He says Patten’s organization has never reached out to him and he doesn’t believe she understands his program.

His company has encountered skeptics, but “that’s to be expected when you offer an alternative to the status quo,” he said.

The FTC declined to comment.

Bare feet and primitive reflexes

Brain Balance centers are colorful, cheerfully decorated places, often located in shopping centers in affluent neighborhoods. They each have a cognitive room where students play video games that target memory or brain function and a sensory motor room filled with mats, balance beams and monkey bars.

On a recent afternoon at the Brain Balance in Oxford, about 40 miles north of Detroit, classical music played softly as coaches guided students through exercises designed to stimulate the left or the right side of their brains.

The Brain Balance program is demanding, calling on families to reduce children’s screen time and to cut most sugar, gluten and dairy from their diets. But what has raised eyebrows among mainstream scientists are some unproven theories that drive the one-on-one training.

One of those theories is the popular notion that the right and left side of the brain have different influences on personality. Brain Balance claims that a right brain weakness can cause impulsivity and anxiety, while a left brain weakness can lead to poor math or reading skills. That’s why kids remove just one sock: Brain Balance believes that as a bare foot makes contact with the floor, the opposite side of the brain will get more stimulation. Metronomes and shakers are placed on the same side as the bare foot.

Image:

Another Brain Balance theory has to do with primitive infant reflexes, which are the instincts babies are born with to help them survive. The rooting reflex, for example, supports nursing by leading babies to turn toward objects that touch their cheeks. The moro reflex, which likely evolved to help infants cling to their mothers, causes babies to extend their arms and legs when startled.

Doctors say that most people outgrow these reflexes by the time they start preschool. Robert Melillo, a chiropractor and author who founded Brain Balance in 2006, asserted that children who retain reflexes face academic and behavioral struggles. Brain Balance tests children for eight primitive reflexes and has exercises that target each one. The one that targets the moro reflex has children stretch their arms and legs, then curl into a ball.

Other exercises, such as standing on one foot, target balance and coordination to promote “connectivity” in the brain, said Rebecca Jackson, Brain Balance’s vice president of programs and outreach. “I always like to tell the kids that it’s kind of like a workout for your brain,” she said. “We all have strong muscles and weak muscles, and it’s the same thing with the brain.”

George Anderson, a senior research scientist in the Child Study Center at Yale University, is doubtful of this approach. He is among several university-affiliated experts and medical professionals who reviewed the research on the company’s website and saw little proof to support the program’s theories.

There is evidence that people with neurological issues like ADHD and autism are, in fact, more likely to retain primitive reflexes than their peers, Anderson said. But that doesn’t mean that the Brain Balance exercises can eliminate retained reflexes, or that eliminating those reflexes would permanently reduce challenging behaviors.

“There's just a lack of foundation for what they’re doing,” he said. “There are things that they really need to show, and I’m surprised they’re in business and have 100 centers if they haven’t shown that. Actually, I'm not surprised they’re in business if they can get $12,000 for doing this. It’s a way to make money. I’m surprised they don’t view this as unethical.”

Daniel Simons, a University of Illinois psychology professor who has scrutinized 130 papers cited by brain training programs, said there is “zero evidence” to support the Brain Balance theory about problems being caused by a weakness on one side of the brain. “This is pseudoscience at best,” he said.

Brain Balance CEO Dominick Fedele says science supports the program’s components, including the benefits of exercise for the brain. But he acknowledged that the company had not, until recently, attempted a comprehensive study comparing lasting outcomes for children who came through the program to a control group that did not. The company is now helping to fund such a study by a Harvard researcher.

“We know there are skeptics out there and we suspect there will continue to be, but we want to be able to show that this is a program that truly makes a difference,” Fedele said.

A Brain Balance center in Oxford, Mich.

The company rejected the notion that selling an intervention that hasn’t been fully proven is unethical. Many families report positive results and the activities aren’t harmful, said Jackson, the Brain Balance vice president.

Asked about downsides, Jackson replied, “the downside is there is cost … or time and money involved.”

Melillo, who sold most of his stake in the company to a private equity firm several years ago, told NBC News that he honed the program over 10 years of working with children before he started charging for it.

“The idea that we always have to wait to make sure we have absolute proof makes no sense,” he said. “The only way you know it works is by using it.”

‘They are interested in making money’

Parents who say the program doesn’t work resent the thousands of dollars they spent to test it out.

Srikanth Mamidi was so angry about not seeing lasting benefits for his autistic son after six months in a Brain Balance program in Cary, North Carolina, that he tracked Melillo down at a ribbon cutting for another center and confronted him.

“It was a time waster, an energy waster and a money waster,” Mamidi said.

The program had seemed “wacky” to him, but he and his wife were determined to avoid giving medication to their son, who was 11 at the time and was struggling to make friends and pay attention in class, he said. They were hopeful when they paid $10,000 for the program and committed to driving 40 minutes each way for the training sessions.

Srikanth Mamidi with his son, Prabhav.

But Mamidi said the small changes they saw in the beginning, such as a slight improvement in their son’s ability to communicate, faded quickly.

When Mamidi confronted Melillo in 2016, the company founder just walked away, Mamidi said. “They are interested in making money rather than improving people’s lives,” he said.

Melillo said he did not recall the confrontation but notes that Mamidi is just one disgruntled parent among thousands who swear by the results.

Most Brain Balance reviews posted on Google and Yelp are glowing . Many franchise owners, including the couple who own the Oxford center, are former clients who tell moving stories about the relief they felt when they walked through the door after an overwhelming quest to help their children.

Izak’s mom, Patty Lopez, says her son is a different child than he was when he started Brain Balance last spring. Back then, he was prone to daily tantrums that would last for an hour or more. When he was briefly in kindergarten last year, he trashed the classroom so many times that a teacher described him as the “worst student that she had ever had in 18 years,” Lopez said.

The family has made sacrifices to adopt the program’s strict dietary and screen-time guidelines and make the hourlong drive to trainings. But it’s all been worth it, she said.

After seven months of Brain Balance, Lopez said Izak is doing well in school and now rarely has meltdowns, and she and her husband have been able to avoid giving him the medication that doctors wanted to prescribe. “It’s a huge change,” she said. “It’s more relaxed. We can play. We can have conversations with him now.”

‘If it works, it works’

Why do some families see benefits from brain training programs while others don’t?

Experts say there could be lots of reasons — all interventions, including medicine, affect children differently. Also, parents spending large sums of money can fuel the placebo effect, the belief that a treatment is working even if it’s not.

Children in the Brain Balance program are doing regular exercise and eating better than they may have been before, which can lead to better sleep. Many spend less time watching TV or staring at a phone. They’re getting lots of personal attention from Brain Balance’s coaches. And they’re developing and maturing.

“At the end of the year, they're better and many times they would have gotten better on their own,” said Rossen, of the National Association of School Psychologists.

Many variables affect children’s lives — new teachers, new schools, new milestones. It can be difficult to know what accounts for behavioral changes.

Ben Forbush, 19, a freshman at Michigan State University, said Brain Balance helped him with depression and anxiety when he enrolled as a high school senior.

He started eating breakfast and getting more exercise. He significantly curtailed the time he spent on his phone, and slept much better.

“It might have been that the program enabled me to take care of myself a lot more than I had before,” he said. “I’ll never know which aspect it was. There’s a chance it could have been any of them. If it works, it works. It definitely helped me a lot.”

Crystal Hoshaw, a California mother, believes Brain Balance helped her son Noah, 7, with reducing repetitive behaviors related to autism and anxiety, such as sucking on his hands, that had been exacerbated by his parents’ separation and a move to a new home.

She credits Brain Balance with Noah’s improvements because his tics were related to the nervous system, which the program targets. Noah also may have benefited from the extra time he and his mother spent together during the 45-minute drive to Brain Balance in San Francisco. The two stopped for burgers in what became “little special dates,” she said. To Hoshaw, the exact source of Noah’s progress matters less than the results.

“It doesn't have to be a hard line — a good or a bad or a magic bullet or snake oil. It doesn’t have to be so polarized,” she said. “It can just be one part of a holistic, well-rounded approach to helping a kid.”

‘There is no magic pill’

The LearningRx training center in Colorado Springs buzzed with activity on a recent afternoon as seven students and their trainers worked together at small tables. The noise level is intentionally loud to train clients to tune out distractions.

One child bounced on a mini-trampoline as she tried to recall all 45 U.S. presidents. Another child tossed a ball with his trainer as they took turns reciting the alphabet in time with a metronome, an exercise designed to help him multitask.

Many of LearningRx’s brain games are similar to exercises that psychologists use to conduct IQ tests, including recalling numbers or shapes. They’re given easy tasks to start and are rewarded with high fives from their coaches and points they can save up to buy prizes. When they can recite all of the presidents, their picture is posted on the wall.

Kyle Gregory attempts to read flash cards that are backwards and upside down during a training session at LearningRx.

LearningRx, which was founded in 2003 by an optometrist, initially as a vision therapy program, says it has always done research to show that the program can, for example, help the 29 percent of clients who have ADHD. The company has made a greater effort to publish that research since the FTC charges.

In the past three years, the company has published 11 peer-reviewed studies , said Amy Moore, an educational psychologist and research director of the LearningRx’s research arm, the Gibson Institute of Cognitive Research. Among them is a small clinical trial published in a neuropsychiatry journal that found statistically significant improvements in a group of seven clients who had ADHD compared to a control group of six people with ADHD who did not attend LearningRx.

“‘Prove’ is not in our language, but we have a convergence of evidence that shows that the program changes test results,” Moore said. “It changes connectivity in the brain and it changes real life.”

But questions persist.

“I would want a lot more evidence,” said Thomas Redick, a psychology professor at Purdue University who has reviewed hundreds of brain training studies. He was among several experts who spoke with NBC News who noted that the peer-reviewed controlled trials and other studies touted on LearningRx’s website were fairly small or lacked methodological rigor, such as measures to control for the placebo effect.

Redick added that he doesn’t doubt that LearningRx clients do better on IQ tests after months of training, but he questioned whether the benefits translate to other settings. He is skeptical of LearningRx’s claims that its clients have improved at school.

“You can learn mnemonic strategies that are effective but that only works for those materials,” he said. “It’s not changing whether or not you have ADHD.”

Image: Kyle Gregory brain training at LearningRx i Colorado Springs, Co.

Still, Alana Gregory, Kyle’s mom, said LearningRx has built confidence in her son, which has improved his behavior.

“There is no magic pill,” she said, “but you have to find out what works for your individual child and go with it.”

Brain Balance Achievement Centers Across the Nation are Becoming Board Certified Cognitive Centers

Brain Balance Achievement Centers announced their 2020 initiative to ensure all their locations become Board Certified Cognitive Centers (BCCC), a designation granted by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES). The initiative started in 2019, with more than half of the more than 100 centers nationwide are already in progress or have completed the program.

The BCCC designation requires that at least 80% of student-facing staff at each location complete a professional training and certification program through IBCCES that focuses on working with individuals with a variety of needs, such as anxiety, dyslexia, autism and ADHD.

Brain Balance offers a personalized, drug-free program that provides answers to social, emotional, behavioral and academic development. Brain Balance was founded in 2007 and employs a personalized and integrative approach through sensory engagement, physical development, academics and nutrition.

“Professional training is incredibly important in our industry, and IBCCES has standardized training and certification that is globally recognized,” said Dr. Rebecca Jackson, Vice President of Programs and Outcomes at Brain Balance Achievement Centers. “We worked closely with the IBCCES team to develop instruction that meets the needs of our more than 100 centers. This new training program will give our team an even greater understanding as they work with students who face challenges with attention and focus, anxiety, learning, socialization and more.”

Currently several Brain Balance Centers have already completed their training and certification programs which includes: Lee Summit, MO; Mansfield, Katy, Southlake, Denton, Cedar Park and Hutto TX; Encino, CA; Columbia, MO; Boise-Eagle, ID; Centerville, OH; The Piedmont Triad, NC; Wexford, PA; North Oakland, MI; Brentwood, Palmdale, Visalia and Anaheim Hills CA; Cary and Raleigh NC; and Wichita, KS; with many more to announce certification over the coming weeks. As a whole Brain Balance Centers have over 280 individuals who have completed their certification program.

“IBCCES is proud to work with an organization that recognizes the need for ongoing professional training. Because Brain Balance works with children with a variety of needs and cognitive disorders, the Board Certified Cognitive Center program was a perfect fit. Our training and certification program complement their existing knowledge and methodology, allowing them to continue to positively impact the thousands of families they serve,” said Myron Pincomb, IBCCES Board Chairman.

For almost 20 years, IBCCES has been the industry leader in cognitive disorder training and certification for healthcare, education and corporate professionals around the globe. More parents are seeking out organizations that have completed evidence-based training and professional review as they search for options.

All you need to know about the Brain Balance® Program

brain balance tour 2022

What is the Brain Balance® program?

The Brain Balance® program is a multisensory program that engages the brain and body, training both to work at their best. The aim of the program is to form new pathways in the brain by training different behaviors. This includes physical Brain Balance® exercises , cognitive and sensory activities, and a tailored nutrition plan.

✅  Personalized program: Each program is tailored to individual needs ✅ Holistic: Comprehensive approach with cognitive, sensory and physical activities, and a nutrition plan ✅ Versatile: Available online and in person. Suitable for children and with different needs and baselines.

❌ Time-intensive: Requires a three-month commitment to frequent sessions ❌ Cost: May be expensive depending on individual needs ❌ Location: Limited availability for in person coaching in some areas

Who can benefit from the Brain Balance® exercises and program?

The program is aimed at children and adults of all ages, with a range of conditions and challenges that mean they would particularly benefit from the program. These include:

  • Children and adults with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), as the Brain Balance® program can help train their focus and address emotional, social and behavioral issues.
  • Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Children with ASD often experience difficulties with learning, sensory-motor activities, social behaviors and communication. The activities in Brain Balance® help to develop neural networks, improving many aspects of this condition.
  • Children and adults with high levels of anxiety . Individual experiences of anxiety rely heavily on brain development and connectivity, which is where Brain Balance® can help. There’s a strong link between sensory processing difficulties and anxiety, so the sensory training aspect of this program is particularly helpful.
  • Children with learning disorders such as Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, Dyscalculia and Dyspraxia — conditions that can impact your child’s ability to receive information, process, store and respond to it. There’s research to show that these disorders can be linked to weak connections in various areas of the brain [1]. The training exercises in the Brain Balance® program can help to build and strengthen the connections that need further development.
  • Children and adults with processing disorders — this includes auditory, sensory and visual processing disorders. Again, these can be linked to different strengths of connection in certain areas of the brain. Brain Balance® training can help to improve these symptoms by strengthening neural connections.
  • Children with Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD). This is associated with anger, irritability, vindictiveness and argumentative or defensive behavior, particularly towards authority figures. Therapy and brain training can help to condition the brains of children with this disorder, improving their behavior.
  • Children struggling academically, behaviorally or socially. Although many children with difficulties do not have a diagnosis, strengthening connections in certain areas of the brain can help to improve all these symptoms in many cases.

What are Brain Balance® Centers?

Brain Balance® Centers are available nationwide throughout the US. There are two options for people taking part in the program — face to face coaching at a Brain Balance® Center, or virtual coaching online based at home. If you opt for a center-based program, your child will attend meetings three times per week with their cognitive coach. These meetings will also be an opportunity to ask questions, track your child’s progress and discuss any challenges you may be facing.

What are Brain Balance® Exercises?

Brain Balance® can help to improve your child’s attention, memory, and problem-solving skills, as well as enhancing their ability to manage stress and mood. Whether they are attending an in-person center or completing the course online, they will complete a range of activities from the program. These include multi-sensory tasks based on rhythm and timing, visual and auditory tasks, core strength exercises and cognitive training. These are all designed to activate multiple areas of the brain for maximum impact.

Is there research behind the Brain Balance® program?

The Brain Balance® program is backed by some research. Recently, Frontiers in Psychology published a study on the program which showed that Brain Balance® helps to improve developmental outcomes in children[2]. This includes improvements in emotional, behavioral, social and motor function, as well as academic ability. This was all achieved without medication, as the program is based on a multimodal training approach for all key areas of brain development.

Another recent study showed that the Brain Balance ® program improves attention and behavior in the classroom for children with developmental and attentional difficulties[3]. There were clear improvements in behavior, attention and sensory-motor development compared to the group that did not take part in the program. There’s also research to show that Brain Balance ® is as effective as stimulant medication in improving symptoms of ADHD in children [4].

What is the time commitment for the Brain Balance® program?

To take part in the program, you need to commit to a minimum of three months . However, the program can last longer than three months depending on what your child’s goals are and what baseline they’re starting at. You will receive regular updates throughout the course of the program to make sure your child is meeting milestones, and to celebrate breakthroughs.

How much does Brain Balance® cost?

There’s an initial cost for a cognitive assessment, which is required before your child starts the program. The cost for this is $29-$49 for an online assessment , and $199-$299 for a full assessment , varying based on location. The Brain Balance® program is highly individualized to your child’s baseline and needs, so the total number of sessions and resources needed varies from child to child. The total price is calculated after your child has been assessed.

Are there alternatives to Brain Balance® or complementary approaches?

There are plenty of different programs and resources aimed at improving children’s developmental progress. Here, we’ve listed a few that would work particularly well alongside, or instead of, the Brain Balance® program.

Soundsory ® is a 40-day programme aimed at improving motor and cognitive abilities in children with autism, ADHD and processing disorders. It’s the perfect complementary program to Brain Balance®. It consists of enhanced rhythmic music played through a patented headset, which challenges the brain and builds new neural connections. The second part of the program is specialized exercises for posture, balance and coordination — these are performed to music while wearing the headset.

Forbrain ® is a tool that focuses on speech, attention and memory. It’s an audio feedback system, meaning that it allows users to hear themselves speak. It aims to improve communication skills by providing immediate playback, so that people can become more aware of their voice patterns when speaking. This is best used in combination with other programs like Brain Balance® or Soundsory ® , for a more comprehensive approach to improving development.

Interactive Metronome ®

The Interactive Metronome ® program is a computer-based program that consists of exercises for the hands and feet, performed to a metronome beat. Users match their movement to the beat, which improves the timing and synchronization of neural networks, as well as boosting coordination, attention and cognitive function. However, this program can be very expensive when compared to options like Forbrain ® and Soundsory ® .

Brain Gym® Program

The Brain Gym ® program is aimed at children and adults who could benefit from improving their cognitive abilities, children with learning difficulties, and people struggling with stress. The program includes relaxation activities and exercises that claim to reduce stress and anxiety. It is based on neuroscience and principles of exercise kinesiology. However, there is limited research to back up this method, so it is best used as a complementary therapy.

The Brain Balance® program is a holistic approach to improving cognitive, physical and sensory abilities. It is available online and in person, although not everyone will have a local center nearby. It can be used alone or combined with complementary therapies such as Soundsory ® , which uses rhythmic music and specialized exercises to build stronger neural connections.

Brain Balance: A Parent’s Perspective

Unbiased review of Brain Balance

Unbiased Review of Brain Balance

What I hope to accomplish here is give an unbiased review of Brain Balance.  I know all too well the energy spent trying to do what is best for your child. I have spent hundreds if not thousands of hours researching things to help my children, especially my middle child, who completed the Brain Balance program in 2015. Back in 2014 when we were considering the program and saw the price tag, we did our due diligence to look into the program. It was not cheap (around $10,000) and not covered by insurance.

Is Brain Balance a Scam?

It was frustrating to find that most people labeled Brain Balance a “scam”. Those comments did not come from other parents whose children completed the program. I wanted to hear from parents… Did they see an improvement in their child with the program? Did they think it was worth the hefty price tag? Was Brain Balance the “golden ticket” to helping their child?

Hard to find Unbiased Reviews

The few reviews I discovered from other parents revealed that most saw improvement, though some not as much as they would have liked. What I have done in this post is given an objective review of Brain Balance by laying out the benefits and drawbacks to the Brain Balance program in an unbiased fashion, as well as offer some other tips.  If you are a parent or care-taker looking into the Brain Balance program for your child, I hope you find this helpful.

Some Background

My son (now 8), was diagnosed with developmental, speech and gross motor delays around the age of 2.  We did see signs of delays before that, but my daughter (now age 10) was also a late walker and talker (she had an explosion of both at 18 months) and we thought that might be the norm for our children. My son didn’t crawl until 11 months, walked at 16 months, and didn’t really talk until age 3-3 ½. He had and has motor planning difficulties.  Now we have an official diagnosis from a neuropsychologist of Dyspraxia, which is a brain-based condition that affects one’s ability to coordinate and plan motor tasks. (we got this diagnosis a year ago when he was 7).

brain balance tour 2022

We heard about Brain Balance shortly after his 4 th birthday.

Much of what we heard was new to us. We had never heard of primitive reflexes. Learning how retained primitive reflexes can be the source of blockades to normal everyday functioning and cause your brain to stay in a “baby brain” type state was fascinating to us. We had heard about Brain Balance through a homeschool convention and the evaluation was actually free for anyone who had attended the convention. Due to that, we decided we had nothing to lose by doing the initial evaluation.

Homeschooling with Dyslexia

Following the evaluation, we learned that our son had retained 5 of the 8 primitive reflexes that Brain Balances tests for. This blew us away but also gave us hope. There was a reason things were harder for him. After doing our research, we decided to bite the bullet and immerse ourselves in the program. We emptied our HSA and college savings for the kids and made it happen. Our thought was there would not even be college in our son’s future if we didn’t remove these hurdles first.

The Nuts and Bolts of the Brain Balance Program

Our son was recommended to complete 6 months of the program(or 72 sessions). He went every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday and completed one hour sessions with his “coach”. We were recommended to adhere to a Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free, Soy-Free, processed sugar-free diet. We did do this and were strict about it for those 6 months.

Some supplements were recommended. The main one I remember is probiotic.

As part of the program we did his exercises at home on the days he did not have a session with his coach.

Do I recommend the program to parents considering it?

That depends on your situation.

If you have an older child who you’ve already tried a lot of interventions with, this may be a good option for you.

If money is not a problem , I would say sure, do it. You will able to accomplish a lot in a short order of time. It isn’t a magical pill though. Know that the exercises at home do take time. And the diet changes take work and preparation, not to mention an increased grocery bill and possible resistance from your child. Also, if you have a younger child, motivation could be an issue. This was one of our biggest hurdles. Getting our son to do the exercises with us at home was hard work .

If you’re thinking “How can we possibly afford this without getting a 2 nd mortgage on the house!?”…

Homeschool Made Simple

I have some suggestions of other things to try first:

1) primitive reflex integration:.

Find an OT (Occupational Therapist) who can help with primitive reflex integration. You will have to ask around and do your research to find an OT who will work with your child to integrate primitive reflexes. We had 3 OT’s before we have the one my son has now. His current OT takes a more integrative approach and it’s covered by insurance. If I had found her before Brain Balance, we probably would not have done it. It’s important to remember that OT’s are not all the same! Do your research!

Try some diet changes at home first. Diet can be huge for some kids, especially kids with sensory issues and digestive disturbances. I will warn you this can be overwhelming to navigate. This is our favorite gluten and dairy free cookbook!

3) Vision Therapy :

Look into Vision Therapy, which is sometimes covered by insurance. A huge part of Brain Balance, at least for us, was the vision exercises. As far as I know, Vision Therapy does the same type of exercises and more extensively (and under the care of an optometrist). * We are actually currently in the process of looking into Vision Therapy, as it has been recommended by our son’s OT and Neuropsychologist.  **Edited to add: Go here to read about our results from vision therapy.

4) Bio-Medical Interventions :

Research bio-medical interventions. Often kiddos with developmental delays or other issues have trouble detoxing and are holding on to toxins, especially heavy metals. Looking back, I wish we had done a detox protocol BEFORE beginning Brain Balance. I think we probably would have seen a more lasting change had we done that first.

For detox, I suggest looking into and researching Advanced TRS . Please know that is also my personal sales link. If you want to learn more check out this FB Group: TRS – A Safe Heavy Metal Detox .  There are other detox protocols out there as well. I’m just not familiar with them.

5) Brain Balance Home Program :

Read the book Disconnected Kids   by Robert Melillo (Brain Balance’s founder) and try to implement a home program.

One big attraction of Brain Balance is that it encompasses most of the above. It does make it less overwhelming to have a “one-stop shop”.

brain balance tour 2022

Brain Balance is a franchise. It is not a medical institution. They classify themselves as a learning center. The “coach” your child will be working with for each session is not a doctor or a certified therapist. They are an employee of Brain Balance. I will say, our “coach” did a great job with our son. We also met with the director (who was very knowledgeable and competent) at the beginning of our child’s six months, once in the middle, and then at the end.

If we could go back in time, would we do it again?

This question is hard to answer and to be honest, I go back and forth about this. Not that it matters because what’s done is done. However, I realize that my answer to this question may be significant to someone researching the program. Usually, I answer “yes” to this question. We did see major improvements in a six-month time frame. Most noteworthy, our son was able to integrate 4 of his 5 retained reflexes (I must point out here though, he gained his Moro reflex back ). His listening comprehension when from a 3.5-year-old to a 6.5-year-old, which was HUGE.

We did feel that through the Brain Balance program we were able to get to know our child better, which is significant. However, If I could go back to the very beginning, when we first discovered all of our son’s delays at age 2 or 3, then I would have found an OT who did reflex integration and done some heavy metal detoxing.

Final Thoughts

Finally, I do not think Brain Balance is a scam, but I also do not think it is the only answer. I truly hope this unbiased review of Brain Balance is helpful to parents considering the program. If you have any questions feel free to contact me, through the contact form on my page.

Blessings to you on your journey with your child! And if you’re feeling overwhelmed, please remember this is a marathon, not a sprint.

This was very helpful. I just enrolled in the 36 hour program for our 7 year old daughter who was diagnosed over the summer with ADHD (combined type), Sensory Integration disorder, Learning disorder, and visual deficit. I will say that we have been working with an OT therapist, Speech-Language therapist, and vision therapy for the last 1.5years and have seen improvement however still in search for the additional help. I am not willing to medicate at this time until I have exhausted all other options. Hence, the reason we decided to go with the Brain Balance program. She starts the program on 2/4/19 and we are hopeful this well help bridge the gap.

Hi Dezaree – Thanks for your comment. I’m glad you found the post helpful! And kudos to you for helping your daughter! I hope that Brain Balance helps bridge the gap. Would love to hear how it goes if you get a chance to come back and comment.

Hello Katie,

Thanks for your feedback. I am actually looking online for parents who have tried to sue a Brain Balance Center due to lack of improvements. This is my story: Four years ago or so, I learned about BB and got my son, then 5, evaluated in one of the centers close to my location. They could barely assessed him because he was not cooperating at all so the owner said he needed to mature a little more to be accepted ( he was also not potty trained ), they said that we were just going to throw our money away, he was not ready to get the best out of the program, so she recommended a Chiropractor trained by Dr. Melillo to help my son start integrating some of the primitive reflexes. We did that and after about 6 months with the Chiropractor, my son seemed a little bit more cooperative ( still not potty trained ) but I decided to try with other BB location and this other place evaluated my son and this time he was more cooperative and they were able to assessed him in 99% of the test. He was right weak hemisphere . They said it was not a problem that my son was not potty trained, that some children would even overcome that while in the program. So, there you have 2 different approaches of the same therapy, in different Centers. I was exited that my son was finally going to start the program and after almost 10 months and over 18,000.00 usd and him not making improvements, the owner recommended me to try Craneo sacral therapy! and to give my son a break off BB. In other words, she gave up or proved that this was not doing anything to my son. I was sad, disappointed etc, etc. I felt robbed and betrayed. I felt the center should’ve told me earlier about the lack of improvement so we had just stopped earlier and save time, money, etc. I was very mad but did not understand much after months later looking back, I felt that the Center was not acting with Ethics. I then also understood that the first Center was honest and I should’ve waited longer or comeback to that first Center. I have all documentation, files that prove my son did not gain in anything, and If I could I would sue the Center, but the years after that experience I was too busy trying to find more therapies to help my son, so I didn’t bother to do anything. I have thought about talking directly to Dr. Melillo and ask for some answers. Time has passed though and I just knew some weeks ago that the two centers owned by this couple are closed now. I remembered at that time they owned only one and they were about to open a second one and they were training their new employees ( about 5 or 6 girls ) for the second center inside same room where my son was taking the therapy ! I thought to myself that was not right, because it could distract my son etc…but never said anything about it. I also, never really talked to any of the other parents that came to the center and that was a mistake, I should’ve communicated to learn others experiences. The idea of the imbalance in the hemispheres is so well explained by Dr. Mellilo that sometimes I find it hard to believe that BB is a Scam. What I can say for sure is that not all the centers work with the same ethics. I also noticed that in my State Michigan they have closed 4 of the 5 centers that were open 4 years ago. That also, makes me question if BB really works. Why so many of them are closing services?… also in other states. So, I can’t say it doesn’t work but it clearly did not work for my son at least at that time. I think like Katie says that before you jumped into it you try other therapies OT, etc, even his book. The oils to help with the sense of smell etc, etc. Exercises at home, even pay a girl to come home if yo are too busy to help your child with the exercises in the book. There are now many other things to try. I also, new that now they are using a type of laser to help integrate the primitive reflexes that was used by my son’s OT before Brain Balance. Just my advice. Good luck to everyone!

Did it help your daughter?

The assessment they use to test for the reflexes are just things like tickling the child’s hand with a paintbrush (palmer) and having the child complete a trust fall (moro). In the assessment, kids don’t know how to perform the exercises or respond to the stimuli yet, so most fail and thus almost all come up as having multiple retained reflexes. Throughout the program, they learn to perfect the exercises/respond to the stimuli, and that’s why the progress reports claim they’re improving or the reflexes have integrated, and the parents think “wow this is working, my kid’s gone from a 3 year old result to an age appropriate one”. In reality, after three weeks they’ve just learned not to itch their palm anymore after the paintbrush technique, which places them further up the reflex integration progress scale. An OT is definitely money better spent.

Thank you because my son didn’t gain a bit. I did everything they asked me. Brain Balance is scam

Thank you for writing this. It is very, very helpful. I still don’t know what I will decide, but having more knowledge is always helpful. Blessings to you for being a kind, honest voice in the chaos.

So glad it was helpful!

Thank you so much for your honest review. I know now that brain balance is not the program for us.

You’re very welcome! I wish you the best.

Thank you! Thank you! I don’t know how I stumbled upon this blog , it’s as if you were reading my mind. Last week my son has had his assessment done. He is 8 years old and has not been officially diagnosed with ADHD. I was very hesitant to shell out $8,000, I figured I could do it on my own. My son is well mannered and disciplined, I have had him in martial arts since Age 4. He gets good grades, however he is extremely hyper and impulsive. It’s starting to show that he is not as mature and other 8 year olds. I already own the book disconnected kids and was looking for ways to help him with the Primitive reflexes and improve his visionary test. I was wondering if there is a way all of this could be covered or some of it covered by insurance. You have given me so much hope! Here’s to trying it on my own! Thank you for looking out for other mothers and sharing your experience.

Jessie, I see that you commented several months ago, but if you still need help with integrating primitive reflexes, I suggest that you see if you can find someone who specifically does reflex integration. You could look on web sites such as Masgutova Method or Rhythmic Movement Training for certified practitioners in your area. These methods address more reflexes than other programs that only address 6-8 of the main reflexes. Sometimes that is enough, but often kids need more (such as addressing the Fear Paralysis Reflex, etc). Also, if you are a do-it-your-selfer, you could look into Sonia Story’s training program (Move Play Thrive). There are two levels and I recommend taking both levels. There is a lot to learn and it can be overwhelming, but it is great information and incorporates neurodevelopmental movements from RMT (Rhythmic Movement Training), Brain Gym and Masgutova, as well as others. Good luck!

Thank you for your comment! I wish you the best as you help your son.

This is a great review. Thank you for sharing. I am considering BB program and your insight is very helpful. With time constraints my biggest concern, this seems like better option for us then doing independent therapies. However, I am concerned that 1) treatment seems cookie cutter (although I am not really informed enough to claim that) and 2) results of repeating tests will definately show improvements but will they show improvement in what really matters (anxiety, social skills, behavior). I need more testomonials from parents/kids that have been through program before investing a huge amount of $ and time.

I hope you find what you are looking for so you can move forward confidently. If you do end up doing BB, please come back and update!

When you say you emptied your HSA account, was there a particular process required to be an acceptable HSA expense like having Brain Balance sessions written in an IEP? Were there any hurdles having Brain Balance qualify as an HSA expenditure?

I do not remember any hurdles. I think we may just have needed a receipt from the Brain Balance Center we attended. That particular HSA did not have many limitations. If you are considering doing that you would definitely want to check the details of your HSA and the BB center. I know we now have an FSA which is very strict and Brain Balance would have been an excluded “purchase.”

This is super helpful! We just did the BB assessment and thinking of ways to pay for it if we move forward. They said HSA works if the child has a diagnosis but super good to know about the FSA excluding it.

I am very interested in enrolling my 32 year old daughter who has moderate level of autism and when she was diagnosed at age 2, we didn’t have the knowledge of how this “autism” thing worked. So we had very limited therapies back in the day. I am concerned about the cost of BB, as I’m sure Medicare will not cover this, but does anyone know of any other state resources for the state of Wisconsin that may cover the cost of BB? The therapies are so limited for older adults.

Hi Mary. I believe Brain Balance is only for children. At least that’s how it was when we were in it. Here is an organization that might be worth checking out: https://www.hope-future.org .

I am really torn on this. I have a feeling BB is one of those places where you could take the most well-rounded, advanced in every area child and they would still find something to work on. That you and other parents are still doing other therapies that are similar means that, how much did it REALLY help? It may not be a scam but it seem to predatory on parents’ desperation to do anything to help their child.

Thank you for your honest feedback. This was so helpful!!!! You gave me some other avenues of hope!

I’m here, like you, with only the purest of intentions to help you on your journey of finding balance for your beautiful kiddos and give you my experience with the Brain Balance program for my 8 year old son. His delays or imbalances started showing up early with eczema and allergies in his first year of life. Our Vassar/Harvard trained pediatrician’s answer for this was to Aquaphor the heck out of him and change formulas…told not to worry). I was told nothing else in his development had red flags but I was concerned with they way he was dragging his leg occasionally while crawling and again my Ped said no worries he’ll figure it out. Then age 3 Nursery school began. He had been friendly, talkative, empathy, athletic, academically and musically strong, good eater, and healthy all through his toddler years but once in a group of his peers that demanded structure and flexibility of mind did the calls start coming in. They would say he is happy to be here but gets more agitated than the others, irritates quickly, tires easily. They suggested an OT eval to help him with modulating the sensory and movement demands of his school day. Made sense to me, I’m was a NYC holistic chiropractor (only saw adults though) and I thought, “ok good these OT’s see kids all day long, they know what they are doing. Let them strengthen the areas of weakness and get him on the right tract. I switched OT center’s 2 times after the first year due to slow progress and never getting answers on what areas of his sensory motor systems were they trying to strengthen. They were just all on autopilot pushing him through ball pits and swings and obstacles courses but I never felt it was individualized enough and I was given vague ansers on what they were actually working on neurologically. We spent 2 years going 3 X60 to sensory gyms where his progress moved at turtle pace, small gains, never transferring into real life situations, no parent support group there, no school intervention visits from his OT team, no nutrition guidance, no home charts/schedules/sensory diet guidance. I added play groups to his schedule to help expose him to the sensory and motor demands of playing/taking turns/sharing/teamwork to see if his skill set could transfer into real life. It was not going well. So now we have nursery school, OT afterschool, and a social skills playgroup run by a psychologist and social worker afterschool. His delays were still in Hyperactivity (displayed itself as impatience, trouble taking turns, anxious in his own skin, he would stretch and yawn a lot trying to get settled, fidgety). He didn’t run around and bounce off the walls though it was more internal hyperactivity, Emotional Regulation (displayed itself as low frustration tolerance, cried more or got mad quicker for his age, sensory overload meltdowns). His academics, warmth, and charm always were his strengths so making friends was easy but keeping them became an issue due to his controlling anxious behaviors and his agitated responses. Once he was 5, my strong on top of the curve boy was falling behind in self regulation skills. OT/ play groups/psychologist/organic, non- gmo, dye free eating/small private school were not the answer to the root cause of my child’s developmental gaps and I was on a fierce mission to find the answer. When I found info. on Brain Balance during one of my hundreds of late night searches, it was the full comprehensive one stop answer I was looking for. Root cause of sensory motor modulation, huge like minded parent support, nutrition/supplement guidance with a registered dietitian/ subjective once a month progress reports/parent viewing area/ school visits/ home support with exercises and activities/one year follow up assessment after graduation!!! Yes I said graduation, they said there was and end in sight. I was beyond skeptical and it took me 2 years to get my hubby and mom on board and get the money together but it was life changing after 60 sessions and I can’t say enough how this program has helped push his development onto the right tract and got rid of his gaps in such a short time. Every kiddo starts at different developmental levels so if your expecting to undo huge gaps in development in that short time, don’t. It may be 6, 9, 12, 18 month for your kiddo due to more social delays, motor delays, speech delays, etc. but doing this intense one stop program calmed all of our lives and it made the most impactful changes in his skills. He is a happy regulated 10 year old now with a strong regulated nervous system. His neuro systems are age appropriate.. vision processing and perception, auditory processing, motor strength, smell and taste modulation, touch tolerance and interoception( sense for hunger, pee/poop/hot/cold) all on par. What I have learned from Brain Balance and the Harvard research is that these kiddos need ALL of these pieces being trained AT ONCE not in pieces in different locations with different helpers. The brain that fires together wires together. Modulating all the sensory motor pieces of the brain at once is the answer. Don’t fool yourself into thinking it could best be done separately. It wastes so much precious growth time. Tweak small lagging pieces once done with Brain Balance, it may not be the be all and end all for all of their delays but I’ve seen so many families have great similar quick changes that I talk about it to anyone who needs a new perspective on helping their kiddo get there quickly and efficiently. Best of luck and healing to all of you warrior Moms and Dads

OMG this is what I needed. Today we went to BB for the results of my 6 yr old son’s assessment. We found out that he has “Emotional Regulation (displayed itself as low frustration tolerance, cried more or got mad quicker for his age, sensory overload meltdowns). His academics, warmth, and charm always were his strengths so making friends was easy but keeping them became an issue due to his controlling anxious behaviors and his agitated responses. ” I don’t mind him going to BB, but I was worried that I spend all this money and 6 months later there is no change. I see some of the reviews talking about OT, which sound good because it’s covered by insurance. I just looking for more information to give me the warm and fuzzy about BB. I’m looking for a support group and something. Thanks so much

Michele, I had my 2 sons taken evaluations tests at BB. After reading many articles about BB, my sincere suggestions are the 2 lowest hanging fruit everyone could do, without paying up huge fees. 1) Diet control. 2) Hand-eye or foot-eye coordinated exercises. These 2 are well known in medical field as the proven scientific approach that can improve the brain cognitive and help with a host of issues.

Diet wise, cut down processed foods and preservatives, and possibly gluten. Exercise wise, basketball, soccer, tennis, ping-pong, etc would help. I could tell the transformation of my kids after work-out, as they are much calmer and respectful. Even a simple running of 15 minutes help too.

The BB creator was well known to have faked research studies with dubious credentials. Big red flags. Diet and Exercise is what BB targeted too, so why bother with paying up huge fees and driving a distance away?!

Did you do it? How did it work for him?

Hi Moms and Dads, I want to clarify for the researching parents that the information that a few of the parents have written on this topic is coming from parents that haven’t been members of the Brain balance family. The program that you enroll in is NOT about intergrating primitive reflexes. The program is a full all encompassing enrollment that entitles your family to have exercises, activities, and lifestyle changes given to them with a systematic plan to diminish or even resolve most of the problems YOU see in your child’s life. You see the changes, the schools, coaches, and family member see the changes, it’s not that Brain Balance is telling you they are getting results, you are reporting to them that the plan is producing results outside in the community where it counts. There would not be 120 thriving centers nationwide if this wasn’t happening. It is a proven method that moves the needle in your child’s development more than any other program out there. Hands down!

Katie I thought you did a good job with unbiased review.

Our son has done the Brain Balance program with success. Years later we are very grateful that we did the program. Our son has been high energy since he was little, like really little—lots of energy! He didn’t sleep like I thought he would and his mind was always going. We could tell he was smart and easily figured things out but was struggling with active social situations and following directions. It was like when he was active his brain could not stop. The problem was he was ALWAYS active! After hearing about brain balance we prayed this was the answer we need. It has almost been 6 years since we finished the program, I can honestly say we know it gave us the child we always knew he could be. He still has a TON of energy (even at 12) but he has more control of it. He is smart, life comes easier for him, and there are not big gaps as there was before. We still continue with diet, he is in multiple sport to help with the energy, he is excelling at school work and is a polite and socially smart kid.

It has not been an easy journey even after the program there has been ups and downs. But even with that said, I would still say it is 100% worth it.

Helpful tips- I would start with diet change before you do the program. Get rid of gluten, dairy, and dyes. Try to do it first so that it is not so overwhelming when you start.

If you feel like OT (or another therapy)would work for your child. Try it first. Don’t second guess yourself with a program that is expensive.

Be ALL into the program when you do it. Do the home exercises. Do the diet. Talk to your child’s teacher. Have them meet with staff at school if that is an option. Get everyone (teachers, grandparents, friends parents) on the same page with expectations of behavior, diet, exercises, etc.

I just wanted to say thank you. Your son and his difficulties and delays, sound very close to what we have going on with my now 9 year old. They have given us diagnoses of moderate ASD, ADHD, SPD, APD, dyslexia, anxiety….but no further information or assistance, other than offers of medication. We tried it, but it mostly seemed to be trading one problem for another. I would love to try out the Brain Balance program but finances just are not available. The information in your post gives me hope. It gives me a starting point and renewed motivation and belief that there is help out there somewhere. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.

You’re very welcome, Mary. I wish you and your son the best. 💕

It’s so useful to come across an unbiased account of this, and I wondered if I could just ask a couple of questions, as we tried reflex integration and it was a bit of a disaster. The fact that it seemed to make certain things worse told me it was doing something, but the practitioner we saw (in the UK) didn’t really know how to help us move forwards so we gave up.

My questions are, you said “Most noteworthy, our son was able to integrate 4 of his 5 retained reflexes (I must point out here though, he gained his Moro reflex back).” Because I didn’t really understand the evaluation process I couldn’t tell if my son was integrating retained reflexes, or if the practitioner was just saying he was to stop us getting demoralised! – could you actually tell yourself?

Secondly, do you mean the Moro reflex was integrated and became unintegrated again? How could you tell? It was during work on the Moro that we ran into lots of problems (horrific outbursts of rage) so I’m keen to know why this would happen and how you worked through it, if possible!

Thanks! I really wanted to be an unbiased voice. Regarding integrating reflexes, I just went by their word. We did see improvements during the program so it just made sense to me that reflexes were being integrated. I think there are ways you can test at home but I did not do that. And yes the Moro was integrated and then we did another program and it was not integrated. I truly don’t know how this works, but a few professionals I’ve talked to (including the developmental optometrist at Vision Therapy (where they also tested for reflexes) and my son’s OT) said they can come and go. I think this is especially true for the Moro reflex during times of stress.

Hi Katie, I just signed my 6 year old up for BB today and discovered your post afterwards. She was diagnosed with developmental delay. She’s extremely smart when it comes to daily life, directions on how to get places but struggles academically. There is a disconnect and no one can figure it out. Example she knew her birthday for months now she will say the correct month but says the 26th instead of the 27th. She can remember patterns and one day will know her ABC’s and the next can’t recall them. I feel she has the knowledge and information but can’t get it out. She has done speech and OT with no improvement. Do you have any other advice from what I have explained? Do you have a diet plan that you follow or followed? Can you proved any information and directions on how to do a detox for a 6 year old that will not hurt her? Thanks in advance for any information and help you can provide.

If you are proceeding with Brain Balance they should be able to give you some insight. Because you haven’t seen improvement with speech and OT the detox approach could be a helpful thing to try next. There are many different detoxes out there. The only ones we have done are Andy Cutler chelation and TRS. The reason I recommend TRS is because it is the easiest one I know of (it is a tasteless spray and the kids aren’t adverse to using it). The best way to get information on TRS is to join the Facebook group, which has lots of testimonials. We have had no problem detoxing with it but I know some people see more side effects than others. However like I said there are other detoxes out there too. I’m just not familiar with them. Regarding diet, we have done gluten and dairy free (based on Brain Balance recommendations) in the past. Some people see huge change with that, others not so much. Hopefully this was helpful. 🙂

My friend has a daughter who has invisible seizures and her symptoms sound a lot like how you are describing your child. Have they tested for this?

I am the mother of a now 18 yr old boy diagnosed with mild autism at age 3, and who is finishing high school. My best friend has a 17 yr old with global development delay and ADHD and she has tried every therapy modality available, including detoxing, gluten free casein free diet, brain balance, electrostimulation, stem cell, etc. When my son was diagnosed, I researched proven therapies and I decided to hire ABA therapists to come to my home 4 hours per day, and the rest of the time, I applied ABA principles myself. I also put myself in my son’s place. He was confused by his senses, didn’t see the point of language, considered people as objects, failed to notice people or to mirror behaviour, had huge issues with solid food, was afraid of noises, etc. I met one neurologist who gave me the best advice: don’t underestimate his potential, push him to his limits, dont coddle him. So, since he was highly sensorial, like an animal, I also decided to apply well established animal training methodologies. I watched Caesar Milan a lot in those days, and I noticed the correlation between dog training and ABA therapy. Well, within 1.5 years, my son had gone from the developmental age of 12 months at 36 months to his actual developmental age in almost every area (was still slightly delayed in speech and impulse control). At the time, I thought friends and academic achievement were out of reach. He went to school with neurotypical kids, got help in elementary school, is allowed extra time for tests, because he gets anxious. He’s been on the honour roll every year since beginning high school, he drives, he has friends, he has a girlfriend, he has been playing water polo competitively, and he has been accepted at university for September in engineering. Conversely, my friend’s son, who went through a whole host of costly therapies, will never be independent. My friend has no regrets because she knows she has tried everything, but I am angry that there is no legislation to prevent profit making companies from selling their quackery. When parents complain that ABA therapy doesn’t work, it is usually one of two reasons: the parents fail to apply ABA principles at home on a 24/7 basis or the child is intellectually disabled, as in the case of my best friend. These special kids need 100% consistency to learn and ABA is the best teaching system to help kids who are neurologically atypical to make sense of the world and to learn what is expected of them. For example, turning on the tap to wash your hands is fine; turning on the tap to watch the water go down the drain over and over is not fine. ABA would be good for neurotypical kids too; it’s simply not necessary because they learn from watching others.

Thank you for your very through and honest review. I’m still on the fence on what we should do and I’m glad there are alternatives that you have mentioned.

Thank you , Katie. You had mentioned that you had done gluten free, dairy free, and dye free before. Is your child on any special diet post BB treatments? I ask because this is honestly going to be a great challenge for our family. Although, we are willing to try .

We did gluten free and dairy free for a while after Brain Balance. It has now been five years and we are no longer doing the diet. Not because I don’t think it is helpful but just because of how hard it was to maintain. While doing the program and investing so much money into the program I wanted to do it fully so we were strict about it then. My kids were still pretty young at the time so it was more doable.

Thank you for this post. We are starting BB next week. I didn’t pay $10,000 though. I guess they have changed the cost and time because I was told it is a 3 month program for less than $4,000. Their program seems to be an all therapies squeezed into 1 hr a day program, which in my opinion is good. Everything I have read and heard and researched regarding the baby reflexes I can see in my 8 yr old son and a lot makes sense to me. I have take my son through different types of therapies since age 4 when I realized there was something going on because of how he did in pre-k. He has come a long way with those therapies, but I am willing to try everything and hope for the best. Even if the program was $10,000 I would pay it, at least I know I have tried everything. BB is therapy, they never said it is a miracle or it’s guaranteed or anything of the sort. They were not pushy. I will report back to you after the 3 months of therapy.

Hi Sophie! I am in a similar boat. We had a BB evaluation this week and I am strongly considering. Thanks to everyone here for your very helpful comments, and especially to Outside the Box Learners for the original post! I am wondering if you can update us on what you found since you started the program in January.

Sophie! Can you give me update on how you son responded to brain balance therapy? Thank you so much! Magdalena

Hi Sophie, We are getting ready to start my daughter at the Brain Balance Center. Did it work for your son?

My son is 10, diagnosed with Dyslexia at 8. We are signed up for the evaluation as his tutor is asking him to get tested for auditory processing disorder and working memory. He’s been doing the Wilson Learning Program for 2 years and is very slow to advance. I’m not sure what to expect. I appreciate your help and this artical was helpful. I’m with the other lady, Id pay any amount if it would help his confidence, get to grade level reading and wouldn’t feel so frustrated with progress.

Thank you for your reviews! I thrive on reviews like this to help me decide what to do to help my children. Has anyone tried the cherishedchildrensministry.org its a “curriculum ” to help with the primitive reflexes. It seemed like what some of the brain balance does. I am not shelling out the $ for brain balance. But am considering the other. We have 4 kids. All have different degrees of learning disabilities.

We already spent 6k on brain training nuerotherapy, which I highly recommend checking out! We did it through st. Louis neurotherapy. Dr Rhodes. And it was life changing for one of our daughters. We also do the trs advanced detox, again I saw very positively results with the same daughter.

But I am looking at the cherished childrens curriculum for the rest of my kids that weren’t as severe.. Has anyone heard of it?

Thank you !

Brain Balance was a game changer for my little guy! He reached all his milestones early and overnight stopped talking and eating after he received a vaccine at 18months. We did every early intervention and researched everything under the son to get him back. At 4 we put him in Brain Balance a few times. We are so proud of him, we got our son back. Brain Balance basically rewired his brain. Our experience has been incredible and our son is thriving socially, academically etc. My family is very thankful. I would rec0mmend it for 100%.

Thank you for the balanced review! I truly appreciate the closing remarks– that it isn’t the only option and reaching out to professional medical resources is a great place to start.

Thanks so much for your honest review. We were looking into this for our 9yr old with ADHD, and your review and the additional resources you provided were great and helpful. Thanks for taking the time to put this out there for free!

Concerts over cosmetics: Korea's tourism posts biggest deficit in 5 years

Travelers move around Incheon International Airport on May 6. [NEWS1]

Korea recorded its biggest deficit in tourism in five years as the number of Korean travelers going overseas overwhelmed foreign tourists coming to the country.

The spending habits of Korean tourists, who open their wallets easily when abroad, in contrast to inbound tourists' prioritization of experiences over shopping also factored into the shortfall in this year’s first quarter.

This means the travel and services industry trade deficit shaved off much of Korea’s surplus in product exports, resulting in a surplus of $16.84 billion in its current account for the first quarter.

The larger travel industry deficit is due to the number of outbound Korean travelers far outpacing the number of inbound tourists after the end of the Covid-19 pandemic. According to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, 7.42 million Korean tourists traveled overseas in this year’s first quarter, recovering to around 94.4 percent of the 7.86 million outbound tourists recorded in the first quarter of 2019.

But the number of foreign visitors to Korea in this year’s first quarter, at 3.4 million, only amounted to 88.6 percent of pre-pandemic levels recorded five years ago.

The difference in Korean and foreign tourists’ consumption is further amplifying the tourism deficit. Koreans spent $7.44 billion overseas while traveling in this year’s first quarter, which is only a 7.2 percent decrease compared to the $8.02 billion spent in 2019’s first quarter. Considering the decreased number of outbound travelers, this means Korean tourists have been spending similarly to before.

A 38-year-old office worker, only identified by the surname Choi, spent a week in Japan in February over the Lunar New Year holiday, taking advantage of the weak yen to enjoy local food in Osaka and Kyoto, and coming back with a bag full of souvenirs such as liquor and ramen.

“I opened up my wallet more easily than in Korea because the prices seemed cheap for the products’ value,” Choi said.

On the other hand, travel imports — the amount of money foreign tourists used for goods and services in Korea — amounted to $3.54 billion in this year’s first quarter, a 29 percent decrease compared to the $4.99 billion posted five years ago. This shows a stark cut in foreign tourists’ consumption compared to travel before Covid-19. This is mostly due to the number of Chinese visitors, especially group tourists, not returning at the same rate. Furthermore, tourists nowadays tend to prioritize experiences such as camping, food tours and K-pop events, like concerts, during their stay rather than shopping.

The portion of Chinese tourists who said they considered shopping as a factor in choosing Korea as their travel destination dropped from 72.5 percent in 2019 to 49.5 percent last year, according to the Korea Culture and Tourism Institute. Though shopping used to be the main purpose of travel for 95.1 percent of all Chinese tourists in 2019, that dropped to 68.2 percent in 2023.

Korea’s duty-free industry also recorded operating losses or decreased profit in the first quarter despite the increase in travelers.

“Foreign tourists, who used to center their travel around locations and shopping, are now prioritizing experiences, especially as more of them come on solo trips,” said Lee Hoon, a professor at Hanyang University’s Department of Tourism.

“Chinese tourists, who are now making repeat visits to Korea, are just shopping for themselves instead of for family and relatives as they did before.”

Korea’s travel industry is predicted to continue its current pattern of logging deficits for the foreseeable future. Some say that policies should be amended to simultaneously draw larger numbers of foreign tourists as well as lengthen their stay in order to improve the tourism balance.

The spending and length of stay by tourists could be increased by encouraging them to visit places other than Seoul, where they heavily concentrate, such as Busan, Gwangju and Gyeongju,” Prof. Lee said. “The widespread perception of domestic tourist spots being ‘rip-offs’ should also be worked on to attract Korean travelers.”

Yard Act’s James Smith Talks Finding ‘Balance’ & Capturing Life’s Complexities on ‘Where’s My Utopia?’

Metro Boomin Teases More New Music With The Weeknd on the Way: 'We Cooking Up'

The band released its first album, The Overload , in early 2022, which was nominated for the United Kingdom’s prestigious Mercury Prize later that year and caught the ear of Elton John , who they convinced to record an alternate version of their single “100% Endurance” with them.

Yard Act was initially labeled as post-punk, but as their second album Where’s My Utopia ? shows, they are much more original and harder to categorize because of the musical breadth of their songs and Smith’s lyrics, which convey a fascinating combination of wit, self-awareness, empathy and guilt. There are times when Yard Act sounds like Guy Ritchie produced a musical mindfulness channel on the Calm app. In reality, Gorillaz drummer and producer Remi Kabaka Jr. worked with the band.

The band’s sound comes full flower on Where Is My Utopia? — an uplifting and sometimes frenetic mix of trip-hop, dub, bass-and-drum indie rock, electronica, strings and sax punctuated by Smith’s mellifluous speak-singing and other times, his Jarvis Cocker- esque crooning.

Smith describes the album as “a sort of sonic sort of word painting. I think the fact that the music is a lot more manic and switches a lot underneath the lyrics is probably more reflective of the emotional state that I was in when I was writing and how that reflects the lyrics,” he says. The fact that it jumps between the severity of climate change, to personal asides, to gripes with minor and unimportant things like fridge magnets, to the breakdown of global society, to my love for my son to my failures as a father — all of those things are kind of woven together because that’s how people operate and that’s how the brain works.

You’ve said in lyrics that you are anti-capitalist. For all the capitalists out there, what does that mean for the band?

I don’t know what it takes to get there, but there’s got to be a better way than global capitalism. It’s clearly not working for everyone. It’s not communism, although. I think there’s a form of socialism that would work. It’s more of a reactionary term against where the world is headed. [Capitalism] is destroying the planet. Nothing is regulated. There’s so much imbalance between the rich and the poor, and that gap has grown wider. There’s a really good quote. I can’t remember who said it, but it’s, ‘Everyone starts on square one but not everybody gets to play the game on the easy mode.’ I’m aware of the irony that comes with having to make money and wanting to make money because having no money is quite stressful when you have a family to provide for and the cost of bills keeps going up.

I’ve always found humor as a good gateway into exploring deeper emotions and the empathy — I never intentionally try and write empathetically. That’s just come in subconsciously. I like to think I feel a deep connection with the world and want it to be a better place. I know that from my own struggles. Everybody has theirs, and you should try and be respectful and understanding of that. But at the same time, I’ve quite a lot of disdain for myself as well. I don’t want to paint myself as a kind and caring person. I’m always suspect of people that think they’re good people. I don’t trust them.

I hear you. When you are writing are you ever influenced by world events, like what’s happening in Gaza and the Ukraine? In the music video for “The Trench Coat Museum,” there seems to be a reference to Columbine, but —

One of the messages I take from your music is, we’re all doomed, so let’s make the best of what we have while we’ve still got it.

It’s a double-edged sword. You can’t live your life in despair. It’s constantly about trying to find that balance. That’s what the music tries to do.

How does humor figure into that cascade of thoughts?

Even when you’re going through a terrible time you still laugh. There’s a comedian in the UK called Bridget Christie. She’s really great, and in one of her stand-ups she said she was talking to some Afghan women about landmines in farmers’ fields, and they made a joke about sending the men first. She said that hearing these women deadpan that joke given the circumstances they were living under was one of the funniest and heartwarming things she’d ever heard. It all comes back to humor for me. I love the gamble of a joke. It’s how I’ve processed my life. I was raised making jokes about — when something dire had happened there would always be a joke not far away. It was not necessarily guileless humor but macabre. That was just the way my family operated, and it’s helped me in life.

Was that why you had standup comics open for you on a previous tour?

For those in the States who aren’t aware that Elton John recorded a new version of  “100% Endurance” with you, how did that happen?

He mentioned our name in the press as one of his favorite new bands. We were obviously very flattered, and then we quite knowingly did a cover of “Tiny Dancer” for Apple Music to maybe catch his attention. When that came out, his husband David played it to him, and within a week of it being out, my manager rang me and said, “I’ve passed your number onto Elton John. I thought you wouldn’t mind. He’s going to ring in the next hour.” And he rang me. We had a good chat, and then he stayed in touch. Whenever there were milestones, when the album came out, when the Mercury nomination happened, he always rang me to just send his love and support and ask if I was doing okay and if I was coping. It was around that time that we had the idea to do it. I just asked him on the phone one day and he said yeah. I was like, right. Well, come to [drummer] Jay [Russell’s] attic in Leeds, and we’ll lay down the piano. Obviously, there are some rules to recording with Elton John. There has to be fresh cut flowers on the piano and some expensive candles lit, and it has to be a very posh studio. He doesn’t work in the shitholes we usually do. But once those things were agreed and decided yeah, we went down spent the day with him. That’s the first time we met him as well. I’d only spoken to him on the phone until that point. It was a massive moment for us, and he’s still in touch. He’s brilliant.

Does your band work collaboratively?

In a number of the songs on this album, you reflect that your success and that magic could go away in a second, so you’re not holding back.

That self-awareness is probably key to our writing style, and I think the music does that as well. If we’re going to do a guitar solo, we’re going to do a fucking guitar solo and it’s going to be ridiculous. That’s the fun of it.

Do you have any advice or coping mechanisms for an act that finds itself thrust into the spotlight very quickly as you were?

Surround yourself with people you trust and love. Check in with each other consistently. Be open to talking. Don’t go inside your own head, and you may use drink or drugs as a crutch to get through particular shows but don’t make that a habit in the long run. It will catch up with you. Remind yourself each day why you started making music and if this is what you wanted. If it is, you’ve got ask yourself if you’re happier. If you’re not, what do you need to change to make yourself happy?  It’s an incredibly tough industry. It changes you as a person when you go into it. I think you have to become more than one person at the same time to deal with the stresses of it and no one on the outside will ever understand because it just looks like you’re having the time of your life. Most people would rather not be in an office or a factory. They’d rather be on a stage. I mean, thousands of people clapping and cheering and telling them they’re brilliant every moment of the day. But when you’re in it, that’s not how it works. Try and keep yourself grounded.

It’s applied to me personally and to society as a whole I suppose. On a personal level it’s to do with how I’ve felt for the last two years really — about the job I do and leaving my son behind. The fact is, I do it anyway, so what am I actually trying to achieve? I could work on an oil rig or be a businessman and I’d be away for similar amounts of time.  But when it’s coupled with the fact that this job can be very enjoyable, and it’s quite a conflicting and confusing space to be in when it’s three in the morning, you’re out in a club having just played a show, and you realize that your family back home is just getting up to start the day. I still don’t know how you deal with that. But that line lingers in my head a lot.

There’s also the line, “What’s the guilt worth if you choose when to feel it?” Is that directed at you as well?

That was sort of a jibe at social media. I’m not on it anymore, and one of the reasons I left is because people on social media will engage in holier-than-thou saviorism, then post a picture of themselves on holiday. So, they’re celebrating themselves and then chastising everybody else for not being more upset about a situation because they are in that moment. It just becomes a competition to be more happy or more distraught about something and that’s not how reality works. That really grinds me.

You reference addiction in “Fizzy Fish” and then, I’m guessing this is metaphor, but in “An Illusion,” you talk about a shotgun shot. Are you being autobiographical here?

Brain Balance Has a Drug-Free Approach to Help Your Child

Brain Balance is the leading drug-free program designed to help kids improve focus, behavior, social skills, anxiety, and academic performance. Our comprehensive programming incorporates addressing the root cause by looking at brain function from how your child’s brain is developing and its overall function. When you have optimal connectivity in the brain, the ability to learn becomes easier and improvement in cognitive and behavior becomes a reality. With an integrated approach, we are redefining what’s possible.

Find Out if Brain Balance is Right for You

You might be wondering: how do I know if Brain Balance is right for me or my child? Here are the most common reasons families choose Brain Balance.

Brain Balance is dedicated to offering non-pharmacological solutions to addressing challenges. Our program is a holistic approach to changing the brain without medication.

BRAIN-BASED, NOT SYMPTOM-FOCUSED

Our program addresses challenges by creating measurable changes in development and cognition, impacting many aspects of life, rather than temporary symptom management.

COMPREHENSIVE, MULTIMODAL TRAINING

Our program's success lies in its ability to impact multiple interrelated developmental domains simultaneously. Scientifically proven physical, sensory and cognitive exercises that enhance focus, mood, memory, and overall daily behavior.

Find a better way forward. Complete the form to learn more.

Who we help.

We have helped more than 55,000 individuals get to the root of their struggles and achieve lasting improvements in the following areas.

  • Focus & Attention

Navigating challenges with your child's attention and focus can be perplexing. The capacity to focus and sustain attention is a product of development. As a child's development matures, so does their ability to concentrate and pay attention, influencing both academic performance and social interactions. However, if there are developmental gaps, a child might find it challenging to stay attentive, leading to difficulties in retaining academic information. We understand the importance of addressing these concerns and are here to provide support and solutions for your child's development.

Anxiety & Stress

We've all encountered stress and anxiety, but our bodies don't always respond in the same manner. Achieving optimal brain function is key to cultivating resilience. The ability to build resilience stems from optimal brain development. As a child's development matures, so does their capacity to be flexible and navigate stressful situations, impacting various aspects of life. However, if there are developmental gaps, a child might struggle in stressful situations, respond inappropriately and have “greater than responses” hindering their problem-solving abilities. Enhancing brain function can pave the way for improved stress management and emotional regulation, ensuring your child is better equipped to face life's challenges.

  • Sensory Processing

Does your child find it difficult to ignore noises, react strongly to minor inconveniences like sticky fingers, or have trouble remembering sight words they should have mastered? If this sounds familiar, your child might be displaying symptoms of a processing disorder or have an increased sensitivity to sensory inputs. Discovering that your child is dealing with a sensory processing disorder means they are facing a hurdle in effectively using information gathered by their senses. When the brain encounters difficulties in processing auditory, visual, and sensory information, it can impact your child's learning and overall growth. The comforting news, however, is that there are ways to enhance and improve these sensory and processing pathways in the brain.

  • Motivation & Organization

Are you recognizing signs of disorganization, impulsiveness, a lack of initiative, and challenges in completing tasks in your child or young adult? The impact of motivation and organization reaches into various aspects of life. When a child or young adult encounters difficulties in these areas, it poses a substantial risk to their ability to step into independence and sustain themselves. Optimal brain connectivity is vital for effectively planning and following through on everyday tasks. The key set of skills required for this is known as executive function. This set of skills is crucial for both classroom behavior and learning, which is why many kids find challenges in both areas.

  • Learning & Academics

Is your child facing challenges in their learning journey? Do they study hard for a test only to struggle with the actual exam? Is your child finding it challenging to complete homework assignments and grasp the overall understanding of the material?  These struggles often stem from weaknesses in the brain's ability to receive, process, store, respond to, and communicate information. These factors significantly impact a child's capacity to thrive in a learning environment. The good news is that by enhancing connectivity in the brain through targeted sensory-motor and cognitive exercises, we can make strides in improving learning and academic success.

Hyperactivity & Impulsivity

Impulsivity in children can vary with age and may also indicate various mental health conditions, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). When left unaddressed, it can have repercussions on academic performance and social skills. As children grow older, the consequences of impulsivity can become more significant and even life-threatening. The ability to control impulsivity is a result of optimal brain development. As a child's development progresses, so does their capacity to manage impulsivity by being calm and methodical, influencing both academic performance and social interactions. However, if there are developmental gaps, a child might find it challenging to meet expectations, leading to difficulties at school and in social situations. We recognize the importance of addressing these concerns and are here to offer support and solutions for your child's development.

Behavior & Mood

Dealing with your child's public meltdowns and social withdrawal can be isolating, but you're not alone. Many parents feel trapped by their child's emotional outbursts and adolescents' anger or depression. At Brain Balance, we understand that emotional regulation is linked to brain development. Developmental gaps can lead to a child's difficulty in handling stress, affecting their social and emotional well-being. By focusing on improving brain function, we aim to bridge these gaps, helping your child manage stress and emotions more effectively. Join us and other families in transforming your child's ability to navigate life's challenges successfully.

Social & Relationships

Beyond ordinary shyness, social anxiety is a profound challenge that hinders kids and teens from fostering meaningful friendships. Social hurdles often stem from developmental gaps, impacting a child's ability to read cues, gain confidence in friendships, and navigate social nuances. At each age, there should be ongoing social and emotional development. If your child's developmental functioning feels misaligned with their chronological age, it may be linked to underdevelopment in the brain. Closing these gaps is essential to circumventing challenges like social anxiety and inappropriate responses in diverse situations. Strengthening brain connectivity opens doors to improved social-emotional development, empowering your child for success, enhancing their friendship-building skills, and fostering a happier life.

Stories from Brain Balance Center of Winter Garden

"With the help of Brain Balance, Eli has been able to come off all of his medications and he has learned coping skills when anxiety strikes (much less often than before). His angry outbursts have lessened substantially. It is refreshing to see how happy he is. I heard him laugh about halfway through the program."

"Natalie has shown improvement in eye contact and a lot more verbal than she used to be.  She actually skips and started to run when she never did before.  At school, I would pick her up for aggressive behavior but since she started the program school has reported nothing but inappropriate touching and loud vocals.  Tremendous improvement at school.  I look forward to see what else she can accomplish."

"His teacher even noticed he was paying more attention in class and called me to tell me that his listening skills changed, he was following direction in class, and was even eating his lunch. I told his teacher I had taken Joel off his medications because Brain Balance helped us find the problem and manage it appropriately with the correct care. It was such a blessing to see all these changed and we are extremely happy with the results. Joel is doing good and he is more responsible. Thank you Brain Balance!"

Brain Balance does not require that a child has a medical diagnosis, nor do we clinically diagnose medical conditions. Our focus is on understanding the struggles these children experience and helping them develop and strengthen the connections to help reduce those struggles.

For those who do have a diagnosis, 1 research has shown that the unique challenges your child is facing can be linked to weak connections across different regions of the brain.

Get a deeper view into why your child struggles

The Brain Balance assessment provides you with a deeper view of your child’s struggles. During the assessment, your child’s sensory, motor and cognitive development are evaluated. This assessment helps identify areas of development that need strengthening. The reasons why a child may excel in some areas but has trouble in others will become clearer. From the results, we create a plan that helps your child overcome their struggles.
