Understand [ edit ]

Karlovy Vary, meaning "Charles' Bath", was named after Charles IV, King of Bohemia and Holy Roman Emperor, who founded the city in 1370. It is famous for its hot springs and its colorful and whimsical architecture. For these reasons, it was a popular tourist destination starting in the 18th century with guests including Tsar Peter the Great, Emperor Franz Josef I, Beethoven, Goethe, Wagner, Brahms, Leo Tolstoy, and Karl Marx. Tourism ground to a halt during World War I and the city never fully regained its former glory. After World War II, the largely German-speaking city was cleared of its inhabitants and replaced with Czech settlers. Czech remains the major language today but the signs of German culture and heritage are still very evident. The three spa towns in West Bohemia – Karlovy Vary, Mariánské Lázně and Františkovy Lázně – are known as the West Bohemian Spa Triangle , and all three are part of the "Great Spa Towns of Europe" UNESCO world heritage site shared with eight other cities around the continent.

The town, along with Prague , was the filming location of many scenes identified as being in Montenegro in the 2006 James Bond film Casino Royale .

Get in [ edit ], by bus [ edit ].

Student Agency operates hourly buses from Prague 's Florenc and Dejvicka stations 05:00-20:00. The trip takes 2 hours and costs 155 Kč for adults. FlixBus also offers near hourly service, for roughly €10.

Other bus companies also run services from Prague's Florenc station but they are more expensive and not as comfortable as Student Agency's buses. Czechshuttle.com offers daily transport between Karlovy Vary and Cesky Krumlov, among other places.

By train [ edit ]

bohemia travel karlsbad

Karlovy Vary is well connected to the regional and long-distance train network. The vast majority of trains in Karlovy Vary Region are modern and very comfortable. Also, some of the railways are quite scenic. When planning your journey, use journey planner IDOS . For more details see Rail travel in the Czech Republic .

  • Prague : 3 hr 10 min, long-distance Rx trains on line   R5   leave Prague Main Train Station every 2 hours, 7 times a day, trains on this route are slower than buses, however, you can experience the diverse character of the Czech Republic: industrial areas in North Bohemia and scenic sections like Lovosice - Ústí nad Labem or Kadaň - Karlovy Vary. SuperAction ticket costs from 159 Kč, Ordinary ticket costs 331 Kč.
  • Nuremberg : 2 hr 40 min, 1 change, regional RE trains on line   R29   depart from Nuremberg Main Train Station every 2 hours, in Cheb you have to change to long-distance Rx train on line   R5   , 5 times a day. First Minute Europe ticket costs from 235 Kč, Basic international fare ticket costs 981 Kč.
  • Dresden : 3h30min, 1 change, long-distance EC trains on line   Ex3   leave Dresden Main Train Station every 2 hours, in Ústí nad Labem you have to change to long-distance Rx train on line   R5   , 6 times a day. Includes scenic sections like Dresden - Ústí nad Labem or Kadaň - Karlovy Vary. First Minute Europe ticket costs from 235 Kč, Basic international fare ticket costs 746 Kč.

Also, regional trains operate on railway lines nr. 140 (Klášterec n/O - Karlovy Vary - Cheb ), 141 (Merklín - Karlovy Vary), 142 (Johanngeorgenstadt - Karlovy Vary) and 149 ( Mariánské Lázně - Karlovy Vary). Railway routes to Johanngeorgenstadt and Mariánské Lázně are pretty scenic as line 142 leads through Ore Mountains and line 149 through Slavkov Forest.

By plane [ edit ]

If you're arriving from a place not connected to KLV, it will likely make more sense to fly into Prague ( PRG  IATA ). Other airports in reasonable geographic proximity include Nuremberg ( NUE  IATA ), Leipzig /Halle ( LEJ  IATA ) and Dresden ( DRS  IATA ). Out of all of these, Prague offers the most comprehensive selection of destinations, and is the hub of Czech flag carrier Czech Airlines. In 2021 Czech Airlines went bankrupt and downsized, so there's a good chance that Czech Airlines won't be the best option for getting into the Czech Republic.

Get around [ edit ]

Map

The town can comfortably be covered on foot, but a car or motorcycle is useful for exploring the surrounding areas.

Bus travel is very cheap. A week ticket for 220 Kč also gives you a trip on the Diana funicular. A ticket can be useful if you need to make trips up and down the river for whatever reason.

Karlovy Vary

Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad), or simply 'Vary' to Czechs, has stepped up its game in recent years, thanks largely to a property boom spurred by wealthy Russian investors. Indeed, the first thing you'll notice is the high number of Russian visitors, all following in the footsteps of Tsar Peter the Great, who stayed here for treatments in the early 18th century. Day trippers come to admire the grand 19th-century spa architecture and to stroll the impressive colonnades, sipping on the supposedly health-restoring sulphurous waters from spouted ceramic drinking cups.

Bohemia – lázně JSC

From the History

Carlsbad, the most famous and the largest spa town in the Czech Republic, is situated in West Bohemia near the German border. The town is situated 380 m above sea level on the confluence of the Ohře River, with the Teplá River and the Rolava River. The climat of the town is influenced by the nearby Ore Mountains

The fame of Carlsbad is based on the healing power of local hot springs and the history of the town derives from it. A romantic legend about the foundation of Carlsbad tells about the Roman emperor and Bohemian king Charles IV and about his passion for hunting.

Once upon a time Charles IV set out on a hunting trip from the nearby Loket castle. His hunting company did rather badly all day long. They met a stout stag only on the return way. Charles IV and his hunters began to pursue the stag. The stag ran throughout a deep forest all the way as far as the spot, where hot springs arise. The stag jumped from a high rock. Hunting dogs jumped from the rock as well, following the stag. Charles IV and his hunters only heard painful howling. When the hunting company saw the dogs, some of them swam in the water from which steam went up. Other dogs licked their injuries. Educated emperor Charles IV, who has already known about some springs in Northern Italy, dipped his injured leg into the spring and his leg was healed.

bohemia travel karlsbad

The wise emperor understood that the water had healing power and he ordered a town to be built on this spot. The town bears the name of Charles IV till the present days. As for the legend, the only true fact is that Charles IV was the founder of the town. Actually we do not know the right date of the foundation of the town. In bygone days the municipal councillors often disputed about the right date. We know, that Charles IV gave the town the city rights and raised it to a royal town. The town began to develop soon. The town history itself is a history of disasters, which alternated with periods of development. Due to almost repeated fires and floods, for example in 1890, which amost destroyed the whole town, only minimum sightseeings remained from the time of the foundation of the town in its centre nowadays. At present 55 0000 inhabitants live in the city. The present apperance of Carlsbad has been influenced by the architecture of the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. It is influenced by the mastery of the architects Helmer and Fellner or by Josef Zítek, the architect of the National Theatre in Prague. At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries Karlovy Vary went through the most famous period called BELLE EPOQUE. At the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries Karlovy Vary regained its world-famous name. Classical spa treatment is extended with modern medical knowledge. Many hotels and spa facilities are adapted to the demands of the modern person.

The historic building of the theatre was built by the Vienna architects Helmer and Fellner in Carlsbad at the end of 19th century. The interior of the theatre was decorated by the well-known Art Nouveau painter Gustav Klimt. The present Municipal theatre in Carlsbad offers a wide choice of performances, operettas, as well as ballet. The big hall of the theatre is used as a concert hall of the local symphony orchestra. An alternative stage of the Municipal theatre, the Husovka Theatre, offers chamber and untraditional performances, as well as club music. The Karlovy Vary symphony orchestra with its long tradition organizes not only regular concerts, but also summer colonnade’s concerts. There are 5 art galleries in Carlsbad. The Museum of Carlsbad city and the Museum the Golden Key regularly organize lectures about the history of Carlsbad. Its expositions are open for its guests all year round.

Apart from culture , Carlsbad offers also sport possibilities . Karlovy Vary boasts of 2 golf courses and several tennis courts. Spa guests can play skittles, bowling, billiards, ricochet, squash, minigolf or ride a horse.

Karlovy Vary became famous for its traditional products . The tradition of the glass production was established by Ludwig Moser in Carlsbad. The glass factory MOSER has been producing luxury drinking and decorative glass of classics, as well as modern forms for more than 150 years. Carlsbad is well known not only due to its glass production but also thanks to the production of porcelain. The first porcelain factory was established in the Karlovy Vary region in 1792 in the town of Horní Slavkov.

The pharmacist Josef Becher began to produce the „13th spring” in 1807. He sold it as stomach drops, only later he began to sell it as a stomach liqueur. BECHEROVKA, called “Carlsbad Englich Bitters” in the English speaking countries, is produced according to a secret receipt from a mixture of about 20 sorts of herbs and spices, which come from exotic countries as well as from the surroundings of Carlsbad.

Mineral waters rise countlessly in Carlsbad. Apart from those that are used for drinking cures and in baths, other mineral springs are used as table mineral waters. The best known mineral water in Karlovy Vary is the bottled MATTONI, MAGNESIA and AQUILA . Other mineral waters as KORUNNÍ, EXCELSIOR and AQUA MARIA come also from the Carlsbad

West Bohemian Spa Triangle

West Bohemian Spa Triangle

Recharge those batteries in the west bohemian spa triangle.

The Czech Republic can safely claim superpower status when it comes to spas. Thanks to centuries of utilizing natural resources found locally, top-quality care, revolutionary medical techniques and the wonderful atmosphere of elegant Czech spa towns, in the 19th century “taking a cure” in Bohemia was the talk of Europe’s fashionable salons. Those days the most illustrious personalities gathered at the Czech spas; they included Goethe, Chopin, Metternich, Twain, King of England Edward VII and Russian Tsar Peter the Great.

A trio of towns with an unmatched feel

The famous West Bohemian spa triangle, made up of the towns of Karlovy Vary , Františkovy lázně and Mariánské Lázně , enjoys special status in the Czech spa industry. Candidates for inclusion by UNESCO on its world cultural heritage list, these three towns still display the magnificence and grandeur of the spa’s golden age. The region also boasts other spas at Kynžvart and the first radon spa in the world at Jáchymov .

Let yourself be pampered…

The West Bohemian spa triangle is an area to which people from around the world have come for centuries to recharge their batteries, unwind and breathe fresh life into fatigued frames. Thanks to the area’s mineral-rich springs, whose waters possess medicinal qualities, people come to treat problems with the muscular-skeletal system, the cardiovascular system and infertility. Between spa procedures you can enjoy a round of golf, take a bike ride or head out for some horse riding. You can also just have a relaxing stroll in the shade of the colonnades or try some of the local specialities such as herb liqueur and spa wafers.

Where next?

West Bohemia isn’t just about famous spa towns. You can combine a visit with a trip to many other historical towns, among which medieval Cheb is one of the finest. The Plzeň Region, and in particular the city of Plzeň , has been lauded around the world for its unsurpassed beer.

Prague tours ~ czech tours ~ eastern europe tours, prague to karlovy vary tours - spa town & crystal factory, tour details,  spa town of karlovy vary (carlsbad).

Founded by Holy Roman Emperor and Bohemian King Charles IV in the middle of the 14th century after one of his dogs stumbled upon the Hot Spring, Karlovy Vary is a magnet for famous personalities including writers Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Franz Kafka as well as Russian Czar Peter the Great and composer Ludwig van Beethoven. Imagine Goethe strolling down the elegant streets. While the spa averaged about 19,000 guests at the end of the 19th century, by 1911 some 71,000 people visited springs here. The world-renowned International Film Festival is held in Karlovy Vary each July.

“Vridlo” and hot springs in Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad)

Marvel at Karlovy Vary’s historical center with five colonnades, and savor the hot springs. The best known spring is the biggest and hottest one, named Vridlo – the Sprudel. It spouts its curative water to a height of 12 meters at 2,000 liters of mineral water per minute. If you like you can go swimming in Karlovy Vary’s Thermal Hotel public swimming pool, which is built into the cliff above the city. The swimming pool water composition is one-third Karlovy Vary hot spring water and two-thirds fresh drinking water.

Enjoy a spa treatment at the Castle Spa (upon request)

Another option is booking a spa treatment at the Castle Spa which features a pool with thermal water, unique to the Czech Republic. Various types of massages are offered, including classical massages and underwater massages. Thermal water baths, electrotherapy, inhalations, Kneipp hydrotherapy, and oxygen therapy are possible, too. If you decide on a 2-hour spa treatment we will help you make a reservation at the Castle Spa. Please chose  1 major and 1 minor procedure here.

Moser Crystal Glassworks – Glass of Kings

We will also visit the world-famous Moser Glassworks. You will discover how the crystal creations are made and see more than 1,000 exhibits tracing the 150-year history of this trade. Established in 1857, Moser Glassworks first focused on polishing and engraving. By 1904 it had received so much acclaim that the Imperial Court of Austria was a regular customer. In 1908 the glassmakers manufactured their wares for Edward VII.

Admission fees and opening times: Mon-Sun: 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m. (10:30 a.m. – 11:15 a.m. glassworks’ break). During factory holidays July 27 – August 10, Glassworks tours are not available. Note: In the case of tropical temperatures the last guided tour is at 1:00 p.m. Entrance fee for the Glassworks tour: is 120 CZK / person, students pay CZK 70.

Karlovy Vary – Hot Spring Underground (temporarily closed)

The Hot Spring water from the underground colonnade is supplied to the spa hotels, which are using it both for bathing, as well as for drinking cures. The old section of the thermal underground is open to the tours of Hot Spring Underground. Apart from the underground vents, you can also see the process of petrifying the Karlovy Vary (Karlsbad) souvenirs and rare minerals. The hot spring colonnade is under reconstruction and so the underground is temporarily closed for visitors.

Admission fees and opening times:  Open Tue-Sun: 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Closed in winter: November – April. Entrance fee: 160 CZK / person.

Sample Krusovice Beer

On the way from/to Karlovy Vary, we will stop at the Krušovice Brewery to sample this tasty beer. The prestigious brewery hails from the 16th century. The brewery flourished under the ownership of Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II, who took control of it in 1583. Krušovice is famous for not only its 10` and 12` beers but also for its dark beer and for the labels Mušketýr and Malvaz.

Karlsbad (Karlovy Vary) – Sister City of Carlsbad California

Karlovy vary (karlsbad).

Karlovy Vary (Karlsbad) – Sister City of Carlsbad California is a spa city situated in western Bohemia, Czech Republic, on the confluence of the rivers Ohre and Teplá, near Prague. It became a famous healing center for European aristocrats and maintains its fame as a spa city to this day. The connection between Karlsbad (Karlovy Vary) and it’s Sister City of Carlsbad California is the water. In 1883 it was discovered that the water in Carlsbad, California was found to have remarkably similar mineral properties to Karlovy Vary and in honor of this connection our city was named Carlsbad. Frazier’s well (The origin of Carlsbad Water), now a state historical site at Alt Carlsbad, features a statue of Frazier sculpted by former Karlovy Vary Mayor Vaclav Lokvenc. Karlovy Vary retains its forested and mountainous grandeur, old-world elegance and china, gem and glass industries. We established the Sister City relationship with our namesake city in 1991. Home-stay exchanges, student and group travel opportunities, arts and culture, sports and business seminars allow Carlsbad.  Karlovy Vary to learn about and benefit from each other. Hundreds of people from all three cities have now discovered how enriching it is to be part of an international family.

History of Karlovy Vary

It is named after King of Bohemia and Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV, who founded the city in 1370. It is historically famous for its hot springs. In the 14th century Czech King Charles IV was often riding his horse around the mountains near Karlsbad.   Thanks to a chance his retinue one time apparently discovered the hot spring, to which the emperor soon attributed its curative power. He convinced himself about it with his own skin. Using the water from the spring he was able to heal his injured leg. According to a legend he ordered to build a town around the miraculous spring, which because of its springs still thrives and enjoys the fame far beyond the borders of our country.

The development of spa gave rise to the new social and special-purpose buildings. The first public spa house (The Mill Spa) was built early in the 18th century, along with the Baroque church of St. Mary Magdalene.   The appearance of the town’s historic core was mainly influenced by the 19th century Art Nouveau popularity. The spa fame grew thanks to visits by famous celebrities. Karlsbad (Karlovy Vary) was increasingly becoming an important venue for gatherings. The spa was visited by the scientific, political and artistic elite of the 19th century, such as Beethoven, Franz Joseph I, Dobrovský, Paganini, Chopin, Mozart, Gogol, Tyl, Barrande, Purkyně, Freud and many others.  Karlovy Vary is also popular among the today’s Hollywood elite. Stars as Jude Law, Antonio Banderas, John Malkovich, Robert De Niro, Renee Zellweger and others show up there regularly. In the early 20th century Karlsbad (Karlovy Vary) was the most famous spa town in Europe.

Karlovy Vary

Byzantijnse orthodoxe kerk. Peter en Paul

Bezienswaardigheden in Karlovy Vary

Petra a Pavla) kunt u bezoeken.

Culinair in Karlovy Vary

Welcome to this week’s segment of our 2019 #TravelTuesday series: Traveling with Grace. Today we follow along as Grace visits Marienbad and Karlsbad during the summer of 1929.

August 25, 1929

bohemia travel karlsbad

Sunday. This morning we rode out to the Kettner’s pretty little cottage in Vorechovka . They have a lovely flower garden. This afternoon we took an auto to Skalka where we had tea. The ride is very enjoyable following the course of the river Moldau on which are numerous pleasure craft and there are many people bathing, it being a warm day. Some of the bathing suits are bold to say the least and they are donned in automobiles or in woods along the route. Sir Herbert Samuel and wife are staying at this hotel.

August 26, 1929

Monday. Leave Prague at 11:15 a.m. and after a very interesting ride reach Marienbad at 3 p.m. Here at the Hotel Esplanade we have beautiful rooms and balcony facing the mountains. At night there is music and dancing and the grounds are illuminated with colored lights.

August 27, 1929

Tuesday, Marienbad . We take a delightful car ride around the village where there are many attractive shops (signs are mostly in German and there is less of the Czech language in evidence than in Prague nor is it heard often) and then out through the pine forests so thick that in their depths it is as dark as midnight. There are tannenbaums, mountain-ash, and other varieties of evergreens. Many people are hiking as usual. We go to a place called Glatzen owned by some prince. Here is a restaurant and his private villa both in Swiss chalet style with much wood carving. There are some little lakes in the vicinity. Tonight, they have fireworks at the hotel.

August 28, 1929

Wednesday. Took a carriage this afternoon and rode to Nimrod, Alm, Podhorn, Rubezahl, Hochwald, Egerlander. All these are neighboring resorts, and each boasts a large café. At a few there is an orchestra and dancing. All are well patronized. Never have I seen so many eating places or so many fat people who tramp for hours along the roads and through the forest paths – apparently with the object of reducing the superfluous avoirdupois – only to stop at intervals to rest in one of these omnipresent cafes and refuel liberally with beer, eis-café with a rich topping of whipped cream, bread and cakes. Then on the hike to the next one and to repeat. The ride affords us a nice variety of scenery: forests, fields, distant mountains, broad rolling panoramas, encircled by the Bohemian forests far off on the Bavarian boundary. We ride through another section of Marienbad , where there is a large Jewish population , synagogue, kosher restaurants, etc.

August 29, 1920

bohemia travel karlsbad

Thursday. A private auto takes us to Franzensbad today passing through the old city of Eger en route. Roads very good except in the city. Franzensbad is similar to Marienbad but on a smaller scale. We sit in the park and listen to the band concert, 1 st number of which is Stars and Stripes Forever.

August 31, 1929

Saturday, Marienbad. A big ball is held at the hotel tonight attended by many beside the guests. The master of ceremonies introduces some novel contests and prizes are distributed.

September 1, 1929

bohemia travel karlsbad

Sunday. We spend this, our last afternoon in Marienbad, sitting in the Wald Park. The air is cooled by a little stream and fragrant with the odor of pines. They serve lemonade and lebkuchen at the Quelle.

September 2, 1929

bohemia travel karlsbad

Monday. We leave Marienbad after a very pleasant week of glorious weather, rest and beautiful scenery. Take a private auto at 11:30 a.m. and ride over excellent roads to Carlsbad enjoying the fine views en route. Arrive at Hotel Imperial at 12:30. It is well situated on a high eminence surrounded by the mountains, but they are enlivened by many farm houses, gardens and cottages. Music and dancing on the hotel terrace in the afternoon.

September 3, 1929

bohemia travel karlsbad

Tuesday, Karlsbad. In the morning from 9 until 11 o’clock there is a “frulisticle tanz” on the lawn. This hotel is very large and luxurious and everyone most courteous. We visit the town this afternoon. There is a large Jewish hospital here – for poor Jews – and they are now building a Jewish home for the Aged. There is a fine technical art school called the Handelsakademie. The Jewish Synagogue and Russian Orthodox Church are both very pretty. A large villa and hotel section take up the west end of the town which rises on high ground. Opposite our hotel in the distance a bronze deer stands on a rocky mount. This is called the “ Hirshensprung .” Legend records that a deer pursued by the king’s hounds sprang from the rocks at this point and was scalded to death in the hot spring below which led to its discovery. The town of Karlsbad is picturesque. The river Eger winds beneath its many bridges.

September 4, 1929

bohemia travel karlsbad

Wednesday. We sit in the Colonnade a while this afternoon. Here are various breunners (breunnerite) with different medicinal contents and the people come from all around bringing their little glass or china cups and promenade up and down the while sipping their water slowly through tubes. I sample some of the water, which is radioactive , warm and salty. We have dinner at Pupps where there is a great crowd and listen to the band concert. Weather is fine.

September 5, 1929

bohemia travel karlsbad

Thursday. Take a beautiful drive in Landau up the mountains to Arlberg passing en route the café St. Leonhard made popular by the late Empress Elizabeth who used to breakfast here. The forests are very  beautiful, the trees straight and slender, the ground beneath them carpeted with thick velvety green moss, the lacy fronds of young ferns filling in the open spaces, the golden radiance of the setting sun piercing to the darkest depths of woodlands which clothe the mountainside completely opening leafy aisles to the valley floor below. The air is cool and filled with woodsy fragrances and we enjoy a drink from the clear, cold mountain spring.

September 6, 1929

bohemia travel karlsbad

Friday. The shops in Karlsbad are quite fascinating, especially linens, embroideries, porcelains, and glassware. Also, fine fur shops, millinery and all the latest modes. We have lunch at the pavilion in Stadtpark. The display of dahlias here is very fine.

Below you’ll find my list of the best things to do in Carlsbad as well as a travel guide including my favorite hotels (that I have personally stayed in) and restaurants in this seaside town.

Carlsbad Village sits along a 7-mile stretch of the Pacific Ocean coastline and is known for its gorgeous beaches. Carlsbad is located 30 miles north of downtown San Diego . It is also one of my favorite Southern California beach towns.

If you are yet to arrive in Carlsbad CA or still planning your Southern California vacation , I thought I would share my top four places to stay in the village. One hotel is my overall favorite, one is a value pick, another is a family choice and there is also a budget pick in there too.

4. Carlsbad Village Local Food Tour

The Food Tour sets off from the heart of downtown Carlsbad Village, where your 3-hour culinary adventure begins. Navigate the picturesque streets of the village with your local guide and discover its diverse history, architecture and culture.

10. Skimboard at Tamarack Beach

Carlsbad State Beach, known as Tamarack Beach to the locals, stretches from the jetty, just south of Tamarack Avenue, to Frazee Beach, near Carlsbad Village Drive. This is a great beach to try skimboarding.

Get a running start, toss the skimboard on the wet sand and slide into the waves. During warm water months (from early May through early fall), this is a super fun beach activity. Hours of beach fun!

This ocean-fed lagoon just east of the I-5 is open for public use. There is a water sports office located right on the edge of the bay where you can rent lots of equipment for both paddle & motorized watersports plus wakeboarding & waterskiing. 16. Check out the Bioluminescent Waves (Red Tide)

During year’s with generous rainfall, Carlsbad is experiences a (glow-in-the-dark) bloom of bioluminescent algae along it’s pristine 7-mile coastline.

The bioluminescent waves are actually a type of algae called Dinoflagellates, and usually appear in the spring (most common are March-April). The organisms have a color that makes the ocean appear red in the daylight, hence the term red tide. But, the organisms glow as a natural defense mechanism that becomes visible in breaking waves or when approached by other swimming organisms, especially at night.
