Colorado to Aspen Tour

A self-guided bike tour, as the name indicates, is a tour that you conduct without a guide. You can do it on your own, with a partner, or with a group of other cyclists.

However, even though you’re riding without a guide, that doesn’t mean that you are completely on your own. The tour organizer will plan the route for you, book accommodation, and take care of the transfers.

While on a self-guided biking trip, you can ride at your own pace following a predetermined route. You can take detours as you wish, as long as you reach the final destination at the end of the day. That’s why these tours are also called “inn to inn bike tours.”

All best self-guided cycling tour companies offer the following services and amenities:

  • Accommodation: The tour organizer will book accommodation for you. Your task is to get there.
  • Meals: Typically, all self-guided biking trips include breakfasts, while some offer dinner as well.
  • Bikes and gear: Most bike tour organizers will provide you with a bicycle and the necessary gear and tools.
  • Private briefing: You will get all the necessary information about the route at the beginning of the tour.
  • Planned route: Tour organizers will provide you with a complete route to follow, often loaded on a GPS device.
  • Transfers: Airport pick-ups and drop-offs are usually part of the package.
  • Emergency   phone and contact: You usually get a cellphone with a local sim card and phone numbers that you can call in case of an emergency.

As you can see, a self-guided biking trip provides you with all the support you need and takes care of the logistics, so you can relax, ride at your own pace, and immerse yourself in the adventure.

Picture of a Bike on a Self-Guided Bike Tour

One of the best things about self-guided bike tours is that you do not need to do much in order to prepare. The organizers will take care of all the most important stuff for you, you just need to be able to ride the required distance every day. However, that doesn’t mean that you should go completely unprepared since you won’t be accompanied by a guide.

Here are some of the things that we recommend to consider in order to prepare for your upcoming tour and enjoy it to the fullest.

Learn basic bike maintenance

Since you won’t be accompanied by a guide, you should learn how to fix minor issues on your bike by yourself. For example, learn how to fix a flat, adjust the derailleurs and brakes, straighten the handlebar, and tighten loose bolts.

Get in good enough shape

Bike tours differ in terms of difficulty, so make sure that you are in good enough physical shape to be able to ride the daily mileage.

Related: How To Improve Your Cycling

Learn how to follow a GPS route

Tour operators will provide you with a GPS track or a GPS device that you need to use in order to follow the route. If you don’t know how to do it, make sure to learn before the start of the tour.

Ride in similar conditions beforehand

Some self-guided biking trips include terrain and surfaces you might not be used to. Make sure to expose yourself to similar conditions in order to know what to expect during the tour.

Bring your own helmet

While some tour operators will provide you with a helmet, we recommend bringing your own helmet (and gloves) for hygiene, comfort, and safety reasons.

Related: Best Helmets and How To Choose

Learn how to fuel properly

Since you will be riding without a guide, make sure to learn how to eat and stay hydrated on a long ride so as not to bonk or dehydrate.

Carry a power bank

We recommend bringing a power bank with you if the route takes you through remote areas to be able to keep your devices charged.

Following these simple steps will ensure that you are 100% prepared for your upcoming self-guided bike tour. Riding without a guide is a fun and exciting experience, but it also means that you will need to be able to rely on your knowledge and skills to solve potential problems along the way.

See more tips and tricks in our article on how to prepare for a bike trip .

Not sure whether a self-guided bike tour is right for you? That’s ok, some people prefer the ease of mind and the camaraderie that’s guaranteed on guided tours.

However, that doesn’t mean that you should automatically discard the self-guided option. Drawing from our own experience, you should give self-guided tours a try if you enjoy:

  • Independence and being alone: If you enjoy being on your own or with a select group of friends, you’ll love self-guided tours.
  • Unplanned detours: If you love taking detours, exploring your surroundings, and finding adventure in unexpected places, this type of tour would give you the freedom you need.
  • Challenges that make the adventure: Things don’t always go smoothly on bike tours, but that’s a part of the adventure. Some people enjoy overcoming challenges.
  • Organizing your own time: A self-guided bike tour lets you be the master of your schedule and spend the day any way you want.
  • Interacting with locals and overcoming language barriers: Without a guide tagging along, you will need to interact with locals to ask for directions and solve issues. That’s a chance to practice a new language and potentially make friends.
  • Taking care of the navigation: Being able to get yourself from point A to point B on your own is a very powerful feeling.
  • Exploring local cuisine: Rather than going to the restaurant chosen for you by the guide, you can choose where to eat or have coffee based on your preferences and needs.

If these reasons convince you to give self-guided bike tours a try, you should take another look at our list of the best self-guided bike tours!

The Best Bike Trips in the U.S. You Can Book Right Now

We found the safest bike tours along America’s most spectacular routes so you can check another ride off your bucket list!

Currently Covid cases are at an all-time high in the U.S. Before you book any trip, check for travel restrictions and mandates in states and counties you’ll pass through and understand they may still be in place when it’s time for your trip. If so, respect these restrictions and their communities by rescheduling for a safer time.

Riding your bike can be a fantastic escape from unprecedented stress—as many of us learned (or relearned) in 2020. And riding it someplace beyond your locals adds even more magic. But during a pandemic, everything from traveling to get someplace new to being part of a group is complicated. We debated skipping our annual travel awards, but ultimately decided to focus on stateside trips (potentially eliminating or reducing air travel) run by companies instituting rigorous safety protocols.

Our editors vetted hundreds of tour outfitters and analyzed their itineraries for things like average tour size, traveler reviews, value, and quality of the rental fleet. Each company we chose to feature established practices to combat COVID (everything from providing masks to testing staff regularly to sanitizing equipment), and many have eased their cancellation policies, decreased group sizes, and bolstered their self-guided and private trip options. Of course, it’s still up to you to travel responsibly: Ride within your limits to avoid taxing local health systems, check for travel restrictions in states and counties you’ll pass through, and if you’re sick, stay home. And if your personal situation, local conditions, or sense of caution keep you at home this year, we hope you use this list to shop for the trip you’ll do during a better time.

Guides sweat the small stuff (Western Spirit has set the standard in lavish camp cuisine for more than 30 years) so you can squeeze all the stoke from some of Colorado’s premier singletrack, including the famous Kokopelli Trail, the Western Rim, and the purpose-built Book Cliff Trail System.

Self-Guided Road Tours

Self-guided bike tours: basic overview.

Want to get out on a fantastic bike tour but have a limited budget? Lizard Head Cycling Guides now offers a new service on select bike tours where we will move your gear from one point to another while you enjoy riding on a semi self-guided bike tour between those points. This is a basic bike tour service where you make all the arrangements for your daily lodging (or camping) and meals while we haul your gear plus provide other basic services as outlined below.

bike tours usa self guided

Self-Guided Bike Tours: What’s Included

Lizard Head Cycling’s self supported touring options are comprised of the tours in our backyard that we are most familiar with. As a result, we know what advice and limited support clients need on each stage of these tours.

What is a Self-Guided/Self-Supported tour?

On these tours guests ride self-supported between the hotels on their own.

  • Lizard Head Cycling does include an in-tour shuttle of Day 4 of its Boulder, Bryce & Zion tour (between Bryce & Zion) and on Day 3 of its Moab & The Back of Beyond self-supported tours.
  • Although Lizard Head Cycling does not ride along with guests on its self-supported/guided tours, when we see clients on the road between hotels, we do check in with them – we are out there for our guests. 🙂

What is Included on Self-Guided/Supported Tours?

The shuttle from the meeting hotel to the tour start location, the shuttle at the end of the tour back to the meeting hotel, daily luggage movement between hotels, basic mechanical support at the hotels (floor pump, basic tools, mechanical advice). GPX files of the routes and a list of self-supported water and food locations for each stage.

What should the self-guided client carry?

Full rain gear, pump, tubes, tire irons, multi-tool, food, water, snacks, & sunscreen.

Is there food and water along the way?

The answer is Yes and No… it depends on the stage. We provide clients with a list of self-supported options for each stage.

What about road bike rental?

Road bike rental is $250 per person and includes a water bottle plus a pack with a tube, tire irons, mechanical support and multi-tool. Minimum private group size is 6 riders or paid equivalent. If your group is smaller than 6 riders, we can work to have other riders join your chosen week. Deposit amount is $500 per person.

Self-Guided Bike Tours: Tours Offered

We offer this service on the following bike tours. Please click to each individual tour page for more detailed descriptions on the itineraries so that you can plan your tour with us.

Boulder, Bryce & Zion

☛ More info on the Boulder, Bryce & Zion bike tour.

2024 Self-Guided Tour Dates: 6-Day Tour @ $1,230 per person. Please note that tour discounts do not apply to self-guided tours.

This tour runs from Monday to Saturday unless noted otherwise.

  • Month 0 to 0, 2024 ( Book Now! )

Tour Status Notes: NO STATUS = Date Set, no riders have signed up. TOUR OPENED = Tour Opened, rider minimums not met. TOUR A GO! = Tour is Go, rider minimums met. SOLD OUT = Tour Full, rider maximums met.

Why Should you Sign-Up Now and OPEN a Tour Date? This is the proverbial chicken and the egg conundrum! We need our cyclists to first commit to the date that works for them so that we can commit to that date.

For starters, when you OPEN a date you get to pick your preferred departure date, and there is no penalty if the tour does not run. Once you pick your tour date, Lizard Head closes nearby dates and funnels all additional riders to your chosen date until the tour meets its 6 rider minimum.

BONUS: As an added bonus, we can also hold a spot for you on another tour date of your choosing. There is no fee to switch to another tour date.

In conclusion, if you want a tour to run, we need you to sign up and not wait for others to do the same! Waiting for others may mean that a tour date takes longer or does not confirm. Just Do It! Once a few riders jump into the proverbial waters, others will follow!

Lodging Options: (subject to availability)

New York Cycling Trips

Beautiful sunset in the Hamptons

Start spreading the news, we’re cycling today! New York is famous for many things but very few travellers to the state consider venturing past the bright city lights of New York City to slow down and explore its grand landscapes and countryside on foot or by bike.

New York state boasts millions of acres of protected wilderness and more than 2,000 miles of dedicated hiking and biking trails. In fact, Adirondack Park, in upstate New York, is the largest wilderness preserve outside of Alaska at more than 6.2 million acres.

When it comes to cycle touring, the seaside retreat for the rich and famous, the Hamptons, on the far south-eastern end of New York’s Long Island, provide a fantastic backdrop for riders. It boasts the perfect mix of coastal scenery, rural atmosphere, and historic charm, all within a short drive from New York City. On a self-guided cycling tour, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to stop and enjoy the many museums, quirky antique shops, and placid bays along your route.

Explore New York the active way on a self-guided cycle tour with North America Active.

The San Francisco/Yosemite tour was awesome. It exceeded my expectations. Our guide Dorit was really good and the itinerary was balanced covering all major spots with decent breaks in between. I highly recommend this trip to anyone who is looking for a broad west coast trip within a short span of time.

Honolulu Hawaii Experience 7D/6N

I had a great time in Honolulu. The accommodation was good, rooms were basic but clean. The 4 day trips (mornings, latest return was 2.30pm) were really good, although some left pretty early which meant missing the included breakfast (good pancakes but no other options) 3 out of 6 days. Also worth noting that the Ocean Voyage tour at Kualoa Ranch (beautiful place and really good!) pick up was at 7.15am at a hotel 40mins walk away at the other end of town, then bus back wasn't til 1pm. Long day for a 45min boat ride so might be worth looking into other activities there too. Overall everything went according to plan and I had a great time, but as expected this would be a good bit cheaper to book everything yourself.

Honolulu Hawaii Experience 4D/3N

Bamba Travel was the only tour operator which responded and agreed to help me plan my tour in Hawaii. Although I would have liked a more thoroughly organised tour like pick up from the cruise terminal and transport to the Kualoa ranch organised, I had to take the public bus by myself. It was a bit daunting but Bamba gave me some instructions. At Hawaii it quite easy and safe to take public transport during the day. Bamba was helpful at every step. A bit slow with regards to correspondence bec of time differences as they are in the USA but they would respond daily. Thank you Bamba for helping me organise a tailored plan to meet most of my needs. I had a great time in Hawaii.

Self-guided bicycle tours

Self-guided individual bike tours have become increasingly popular because of the flexibility and independence they offer. They cost less than guided bicycle tours but still maintain a level of support and convenience that allows you to explore on your own schedule without sweating the logistics.

Be sure to consider your comfort level around navigating a different culture and foreign language, reading maps and signs, ordering food, and dealing with flats or other minor emergencies – some travelers don’t enjoy doing these things for themselves, but others find them the best part of an adventure.

Some of our top self-guided tours

Danube Bike Path (Upscale Lodging) Loved by many, this is the most famous cycling trail in Europe. The route is smooth, stunningly beautiful, and very easy to follow.

Lake Constance Classic The Lake Constance cycle route is the most popular cycle route in Europe. On this tour, you'll cycle around the entire lake and discover three countries (Austria, Germany, and Switzerland) and four islands (Reichenau, Mainau, Lindau, and Werd).

Connemara Lazy Days Cycling This tour is specifically designed for independent travelers who wish to cycle less of a distance and spend lazy days along the way exploring this beautiful region of Ireland.

Medieval Villages of Catalonia This cycling tour is a perfect way to explore the quieter and less-traveled areas of this fascinating region of Catalonia, Spain.

Support and independence

'Self-guided' does NOT mean that you’re totally on your own. While you’ll have more flexibility to ride at your own pace and take breaks at your leisure, the tour operator still organizes the logistics for you.

  • Hotel reservations and luggage transportation from hotel to hotel are included. The accommodations are usually the same as on guided tours as you often follow the same routes.
  • Most tour operators provide a comprehensive information package with the marked route, a detailed route description and tips on sights, cultural highlights, scenic stops, and recommended restaurants. (Note that these info packages are sometimes translated from the local language, and are not always the very best translation. While the materials are adequate, we encourage you to supplement them with advance destination research and guidebooks .)
  • Many tour operators offer a hotline in case of emergencies or problems.

Riding style

Since some self-guided tours have a minimum of just two travelers — or even one — you should not count on riding with a group. For some people, group camaraderie is part of what makes traveling fun. If you’re one of those people, a guided bike tour may be the better choice.

What’s included

  • Breakfast buffet
  • Luggage transport from hotel to hotel
  • Tour description, travel material with route map (usually 1 set per room booked)
  • Detailed route planning
  • Emergency hotline

What’s not included

Unlike guided bike tours, self-guided bike tours (except where noted) do not have an accompanying support van. This means that it’s your responsibility to get to the next hotel every day, even if you head into bad weather or just don’t feel like riding anymore. (If you do run into trouble, though, call the emergency hotline, and the tour company will help as much as possible, whether sending a van or advising you on public transportation options such as trains, boats, or buses.)

You’ll also be expected to fix your own flats. (If you don’t know how, ask your local bike mechanic to show you. Or view our step-by-step instructions ). In the rare case of bicycle breakdowns, you may be asked to take public transportation or a taxi to the next town, where there may be a repair shop that can fix the problem (typically reimbursable by the tour company).

Some companies have spare bikes at 'depots' along the route. In other cases, the tour company will bring a replacement bike, but it may be at the end of the day or the next morning.

Quick comparison

Lodging is generally in 3- and 4-star hotels as well as 2-star hotels that are especially appealing—or the only ones in town. The hotels and inns are chosen whenever possible for their more intimate atmosphere and reflection of the history and culture of the area (rather than larger chain hotels). All rooms have private facilities with the exception of certain ships and barges, as noted.

Criteria for hotel categories is standardized in 17 European countries .

Breakfast is included on almost all tours (except as noted), and dinner plans are often available at a surcharge at the hotel or a nearby restaurant (please see individual tour pricing).

Rental bikes and equipment

Rental bikes are generally quite good, but many do not come with water cages or odometers. However, at the other extreme, some tour companies now offer handlebar-mounted GPS. Most companies do not rent helmets due to hygiene/safety reasons. Please bring your own!

Travel plans

Most tours start in the afternoon or evening with arrival at your first hotel. The actual cycling begins the next morning. Start cities usually have easy air or rail access.

Depending on when your overseas flight arrives, you may want to arrive in the departure city a day earlier. You’ll be more relaxed, and you’ll have the chance to explore the city on your own. Likewise, at the end of the tour, there’s usually a final night’s lodging included. You arrive by bike the day before, enjoy a relaxed evening, and depart the next morning after breakfast.

If you can't wait to begin biking, or don't want your adventure to end, consider taking a day tour in your start or end city. You can find all of our bike day tours here: https://www.biketours.com/day-tours/ . Day tours offer a variety of compact sightseeing experiences, allowing you to extend and maximize your cycling itinerary. You can always extend your trip by adding extra nights in the start or end city to explore an area for longer than the included tour dates.
