Beverley Knight on how turning 50 is liberating and empowering

The west end singer is celebrating her milestone birthday by embarking on her '50' uk tour .

Beverley Knight

Singer and West End star Beverley Knight has told HELLO!  how turning 50 has made her feel more powerful and confident than ever before.

In an exclusive interview and photoshoot, Beverley tells how she's celebrating her milestone birthday by embarking on her "50" UK tour and releasing her first album in seven years, aptly titled The Fifth Chapter.

Beverley Knight and the big 50

"When women turn 50 it can be a difficult time because society often tells them that they're done, but my answer to that is that I'm only just beginning," she says. "I had no fear of reaching 50. I wanted to celebrate the time in life where women really come into their power. And that for me is right now.

Beverley Knight celebrates turning 50

"When I was young, 50 seemed old but now it's not old at all. Kylie isn't old; JLo isn't old. We're in the median of our lives. People used to say that life begins at 40 and that's when I think the motor takes over, but you really get into sixth gear in your fifties. I feel like I'm at an age now where I'll say what the hell I want, and that's liberating.

"I've shed the kind of neurosis that we have in our twenties, thirties and sometimes into our forties. While I always had supreme confidence in my abilities as a musician, I didn't always like what I saw in the mirror. I wasn't comfortable in my own skin , and I would find fault. Now, the faults are still there but I'm like, whatever."

Beverley Knight and menopause challenges

However, she finds the menopause "challenging".

"The heat, the flushes and the brain fog, which is the worst bit for me. I forget everyday words, which is so frustrating. Before I consider HRT, I am working with a functional practitioner, who is helping me to understand what these symptoms are and checking my bloodwork to see where I'm deficient."

Beverley Knight

Beverley Knight's husband

Beverley, whose recording career goes back to the 1990s, has appeared on stage in The Bodyguard, Cats , Sister Act  and Sylvia,  for which she recently won an Olivier Award. Her new album is a mix of disco, funk, gospel and ballads and among the tracks is one called Not Prepared For You,  which reminds her of how she fell for husband James O'Keefe, 47, back in 2007.

"It's about a relationship where you weren't ready to meet someone, but they've knocked you out, and that is kind of how I see my husband," she says. "When I met him, I had just come out of a relationship and I was very happily single. I was a woman who had no intention of getting married or having children, but on our first date I knew something deep was happening that I can't quite put into words. All I can say is that I just knew."

Wolverhampton's singing sensation Beverley Knight to mark turning 50 with UK tour

Wolverhampton-born superstar Beverley Knight has announced she will celebrate reaching the age of 50 by embarking on a UK tour.

beverley knight 50 tour

The singing sensation appeared on BBC Breakfast on Tuesday morning to make the announcement, which comes after the release of her latest album, The Fifth Chapter, on Friday.

Speaking to the programme's presenters, Beverley, who turned 50 in March, commented that reaching the milestone birthday is a "privilege".

She said: "You get to a stage in your life where you feel as though 'okay, I've accomplished certain things, okay, what next?'

"It's almost like the universe goes 'right, I'm going to give you a shove in this direction, just go with it and trust the process', and here we are with another album.

"As the big 50 was coming I found myself, instead of thinking 'oh my god I'm dreading this', I found myself going 'it's great, this is a reason to celebrate.'

"It's a privilege to be at this age and to still have health and strength and everything so I thought, I'm going to celebrate that in every way that I know how, and for me, that means music."

Beverley went on to discuss her upcoming tour, and said she was looking forward to interacting with fans again.

She told BBC Breakfast: "We went through a pandemic and that was really hard, and so to interact with fans again just me, as me, is probably the greatest joy of it all.

"I'm happiest when I'm on stage and to be able to have that two-way giving of energy and then everybody goes home happy. I can't think of anything that gives greater joy and fulfilment than that."

Black Country-born Beverley Knight returned to Birmingham on her 50 Tour and I was surprised at how it made me feel. After 30 years in the business, the British Queen of Soul's voice seems more powerful than ever, yet she's just as humble and down to earth.

Turning 50 in March this year, she's marked it by going out on tour and releasing a new album, aptly called The Fifth Chapter. Performing in a tight-fitting elegant black and white catsuit, she looked incredible.

With a small live band and three backing singers, all dressed immaculately in white, she opened at Birmingham Symphony Hall last night(Saturday, November 4) with some of her '90s RnB classics of Greatest Day and Made It Back. Welcoming Beverley back to the Midlands, the crowd gave her one of the loudest cheers I've ever heard at a gig - and you could tell she was touched.

Growing up in the Black Country , I like many there know people who've rubbed shoulders with Beverley. They all say the same thing about how 'nice' and 'humble' she is. And that was very apparent at this gig.

When a fan later yelled out 'love you Beverley', she gasped 'thank you', before adding 'it's so nice to hear normal accents'. Proud of her Midlands heritage, Beverley would go on to say "they may make fun of our accents and how we speak but I know that the people from here are gold.

"We showed everyone just how gold we are at the Commonwealth Games ," the singer added. And she should know after performing Inner City Life with Goldie while wearing a Wolverhampton Wanderers football shirt at the Games' Closing Ceremony .

band on stage with singer at front

Much of the early part of the concert focused on songs from the new album that she is obviously excited about. From Someone Else's Problem to I'm On Fire and Not Prepared For You, they showed off her staggering vocal range.

It was when she later dipped back into her back catalogue that the audience burst alive. Flavour Of The Old School and Get Up! were crowd-pleasers and came with Beverley doing some 90s dance moves too. But they were pale in comparison to the more soulful Keep This Fire Burning and Gold.

It was at this point that the gig became more sentimental and intimate. Speaking on the death of her close friend and musical director Paul Reid from Great Barr on Christmas Day in 2020, the star paid tribute to 'Reidy'. She sang a trio of slower songs in front of his family, who were in the audience.

man and woman on stage singing

It included the heartfelt track Fallen Soldier that she wrote about the murder of Stephen Lawrence, which Beverley sang beautifully with such intense emotion There was another surprise when she moved on to song Sista Sista as her schoolfriend she wrote it about was also in the crowd.

Fans had to wait until the end of the main part of the show for favourites Shoulda Woulda Coulda and Come As You Are. Then, after a quick costume dress into a glamorous short black dress, the encore paid tribute to some of her icons.

A cover of I'm Every Woman to honour Chaka Khan's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this week was a blistering showstopper followed by her reworking of Prince's I Wanna Be Your Lover.

Quiz: Sayings you only know if you're from Birmingham or the Black Country - how many do you know?

Closing the show on new track Everything's Gonna Be Alright, it was an uplifting finale that wrapped the audience in a comforting blanket of hope. "With my family here, my friends, my old school friends and the good people of the Midlands, I've loved every minute," said Beverley, choking back tears at the end of the gig. And so did I.

Proving she's got one of the best voices in the business over a 90 minute gig, I couldn't help but feel immensely proud and emotional at her return to the Midlands. Beverley's the best that British soul has got and she's ours.

Beverley Knight's 50 tour continues until September 26 including a homecoming gig at Wolverhampton's The Halls on September 24. See The Halls website here for ticket information .

CONCERT REVIEW : BEVERLEY KNIGHT – The Armadillo, Glasgow 26th October 2023

beverley knight 50 tour

Hailing from Wolverhampton, Beverley Knight MBE has long been hailed for her majestic performances and ridiculously good vocals; awarded the MBE for her contributions to British music and recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Urban Music Awards in 2004 Knight has had a huge influence on young ambitious artists in the field of soul and R&B music.

Tonight she brought her current tour – The 50 Tour – to Glasgow and the first impression of the stage set up suggested it was a big production and SCOTTISH MUSIC NETWORK was there to witness her latest incarnation.

The Armadillo is an impressive structure from the outside and entry into the venue was quick and painless as the well oiled security staff shepherded the mainly 50 something’s into the venue.

Equally impressive on the inside, the all seated arena is tailor-made for nights like tonight.

The entertainment started at 7:30pm as CASEY McQUILLEN strutted on stage.

The solo artist from the USA looked like a million dollars in her bright red dress and glittery boots and had a personality to match the outfit.

Casey had an infectious personality that had the crowd onside from the very first time she spoke; self effacing and candid with a huge talent she was impressive… very impressive!

Her songs were taken from her personal story book and laid her bare to those lucky enough to be in the arena early; her story telling in between songs was equally as impressive…

Casey McQuillen is coming back to the UK for her own headlining tour in the Spring of 2024 and you should definitely make the effort to go and see her.

CASEY McQUILLEN & DJ MUNRO - The Armadillo, Glasgow 26th October 2023

The interval arrived sooner than she deserved as Casey now had the crowd in the palm of her talented hands and her stage space was cleared and a new resident took her place in the form of a DJ.

Many around the venue seemed to have reservations about a DJ coming on stage but the reservations were soon banished as the knob twiddling and scratching DJ MUNRO blasted out some well known choons and engaged the audience in some community singing.

Between Casey and DJ Munro the crowd was heated into rediness for the main act.

Under the muted blue stage lighting Beverley Knight’s band took to the stage and built up the drama for Beverley to take her place… A blast of music and a flash of blinding light heralded Beverley on stage accompanied by a huge Glasgow roar.

The diminutive figure of Miss Knight was clad in a psychedelic patterned PVC catsuit and, despite her small frame, commanded the stage from the off.

Barely stopping to take a breath Beverley Knight smashed her way through her set with each song better than the one before; the arrangements were perfectly crafted and performed by all on stage. The all seated arena quickly became an (almost) all standing and dancing arena as the soul and R&B goddess strutted, danced and smashed her way towards a well earned stripped down mini set.

BEVERLEY KNIGHT - The Armadillo, Glasgow 26th October 2023

The stripped down session was a very emotional time for Miss Knight as it included songs in memory of her former musical director – Reidy – and an ode to Stephen Lawrence. This part of the show allowed Beverley to really showcase her incredible vocals… she really does have the most amazing voice which also took us through a short Gospelesque performance with her three backing singers – it was hair raisingly good.

Thankfully the break before the encore was short and the cover Chaka Khan’s ‘I’m Every Woman’ took the crowd to a new high… well, who doesn’t love a bit of that particular anthem?

Before we knew it a cover of a Prince song as the penultimate tune and the adoring crowd was longingly taking in the final chapter of the Beverley Knight songbook and she fittingly told us that ‘Everything’s Gonna be Alright’ as the fans showed their appreciation for what was an incredible show… Glasgow showed it’s appreciation on the time honoured way with a huge ovation.
