Don’t Want to Cruise With Kids? Sail on These Adult-Focused Cruise Ships

From cruise lines with a minimum age requirement to itineraries geared specifically to adults, on these cruises you won’t see many or any little ones..

Whether you have kids or grandkids, nieces or nephews, or not, whether you love kids or don’t, sometimes there is something very appealing about the idea of a relaxing cruise vacation minus the youngsters. That’s where adults-only cruises come in.

Back in the late 1990s when Torstein Hagen created Viking River Cruises , now by far Europe’s largest river cruise operator, it was purposely designed for adults with no kids allowed aboard . That philosophy stands as the company has moved into ocean cruises and expedition ships .

Likewise, when British billionaire Richard Branson launched the first ship of his Virgin Voyages cruise brand three years ago, it was with no one under age 18 allowed aboard. The cruise line later riffed on the subject with ads showing kids very displeased that they couldn’t get in on the fun with grown-ups.

No other major cruise lines outright ban the under-18 set, but there are ways travelers can lessen the chances there will be many or any children on their cruise.

If you really want to avoid kids, don’t cruise during a school break period (such as spring break, summer, or winter holidays), pick an itinerary for more than two weeks (length being a deterrent to the family crowd— world cruise , anyone?), or look toward an ultra-luxurious cruise or one that involves an expensive airfare—not everyone wants to splurge on an upscale experience for their progeny.

Also keep in mind the smaller the ship—and fewer experiences for kids (such as kids clubs and big water slides)—the greater the chance youngsters won’t be aboard. Here are our picks for the best cruises for adults.

Whether you cruise with Viking on one of the company’s many 190-passenger river cruise vessels in Europe, on the line’s 930-passenger ocean cruise ships that sail around the world, or on one of its two 378-passenger expedition ships, you’ll be treated to a fine-tuned cruising experience geared strictly to adults. You need to be age 18 and up to get aboard to enjoy the many perks covered in the all-inclusive fares. Those perks consist of shore excursions in every port, free wine and beer, all meals (including numerous restaurant experiences and nightly seafood buffets), engaging lectures hosted by historians and other experts, and Nordic spas complete with hot sauna, steam room, and a chilly snow grotto.

To book: Viking’s 15-day Grand European Tour sails from Amsterdam to Budapest on the Rhine, Main, and Danube rivers, starting from $4,999 per person.

Virgin Voyages

Adult-only cruises offered by Virgin Voyages take place on four 2,770-passenger ships that sail the Caribbean, Europe, and the South Pacific. The atmosphere aboard is edgy, cheeky, full of subtle—and not so subtle—sexual innuendo, and fun done in an inclusive, adult way unlike anything the cruise industry has ever seen before . Expect lots of day drinking, lively nighttime parties and entertainment, a tattoo parlor, and indulgent food, including an over-the-top molecular dining experience and the “Lick Me Till . . . Ice Cream” shop (for no extra charge)—in between trips to the wellness retreat with a mud room and ’80s-style aerobics classes for the full detox and retox Virgin experience.

Azamara Cruises

This upscale line with four small ships does not restrict kids but tends to attract well-traveled couples aged 50 and up who like the idea of seeing the world from the vantage point of a floating boutique hotel. The atmosphere on Azamara sailings is both convivial and sophisticated, on ships that carry a maximum of 704 guests. The vessels feature a library with a faux fireplace, an upscale steakhouse for an elevated dining experience, and a “living room” for drinking and socializing.

Itineraries focus on maximizing time in port, with cultural immersion, including small group shore excursions and “AzAmazing” experiences where, for instance, you and other guests might be treated to a complimentary private acrobatics show in Monaco. Special golf cruises with PerryGolf include play at such prestigious courses as Ireland’s Royal Portrush.

To book: Sail on the 690-passenger Azamara Journey for a 10-night Croatia Intensive Voyage , from $2,219 per person.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

With a fleet of 490- to 750-passenger ships, Regent Seven Seas Cruises is one of the most expensive cruise lines out there and touts that it is “the world’s most luxurious cruise line”—a status it gets by, for instance, outfitting its latest ships with Carrara marble details, crystal chandeliers, over-the-top suites, and multi-million-dollar art collections. Fares include a broad choice of shore excursions such as a mud bath experience in Lautoka, Fiji, premium wine and spirits, and business-class international airfare. While the line does not ban kids—and in fact, encourages families at holidays and on summer cruises in Alaska—not everyone wants to pay top dollar for experiences that may go over kids’ heads.

To book: An 11-night trip from Miami to the Caribbean on the 496-passenger Seven Seas Navigator starts at $5,699 for two passengers.

Silversea Cruises

With its sleek ships, a focus on cuisine and drink as a cultural experience, butlers that pamper all guests, and an overall ultra-luxury ambience, Silversea is a favorite of well-heeled adult travelers. Grandparents may bring a multigenerational group aboard for a holiday or summertime sailing (the 596-passenger Silver Muse is the only Silversea ship with a children’s playroom), but with air-inclusive fares that start at around $800 a day, and no discounts for kids, you’re unlikely to have your pool time interrupted by shouts of “Marco Polo.” Rather, you’re more likely to hear someone call an attendant over for more champagne and a side of caviar, both complimentary and available 24/7.

To book: A 10-night sailing from Civitavecchia (Rome) to Barcelona on the 596-passenger Silver Moon , is priced from $7,600 per person.

Windstar guarantees there won’t be young kids aboard—you must be age eight or up to sail. That said, it’s rare to see any kids at all. The upscale line’s 148- to 342-passenger ships deliver an intimate, adult atmosphere whether you are on a four- or five-masted ship with billowing sails or an all-suite motorized yacht. Cabins and suites are mostly designed for two and attract couples looking for romance at sea, in addition to excellent dining, enhanced by the line’s status as the official cruise line of the James Beard Foundation. Borrow a kayak from your ship’s own marina by day and cap an evening of food and drink with quiet time out on deck, watching the moon reflect on the sea.

  • Remote Islands : Many of the islands in the South Pacific are remote and sparsely populated. This inherent seclusion ensures that your journey is unhurried, unhindered, and entirely in tune with the rhythm of the natural world.
  • Pristine Beaches : Picture yourself on a quiet beach with powdery, white sand, the gentle lull of the waves, and swaying palm trees. The South Pacific’s beaches are postcard-perfect, often devoid of crowds, offering an ideal setting for quiet contemplation and relaxation.
  • Minimal Distractions : With fewer tourists and commercialization, the South Pacific provides an escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life. The absence of bustling city centers and fast-paced living allows you to unwind, rejuvenate, and reconnect with your inner self.
  • Coral Reefs and Aquatic Serenity : Beneath the water’s surface lies a world of tranquility. The South Pacific’s coral reefs are teeming with vibrant marine life. Snorkeling or diving in these pristine waters lets you enter an underwater oasis where time seems to slow, and the only sounds are those of your breath and the sea.
  • Nighttime Wonder : The South Pacific’s remote locales often mean minimal light pollution. Underneath the starry night sky, you can witness the celestial wonders of the Southern Hemisphere. The quietude of these evenings adds to the profound sense of tranquility.
  • Cultural Respect : The South Pacific cultures have deep-rooted connections to the land and the sea. This reverence for nature creates a harmonious atmosphere that extends to visitors, allowing them to embrace the tranquility of their surroundings.
  • Slower Paced Living : Life in the South Pacific moves at a more relaxed tempo. The unhurried way of life on these islands is contagious, inviting travelers to embrace the art of leisure and mindful existence.

In the South Pacific, tranquility isn’t just a state of being; it’s an integral part of the environment. The absence of urban noise and bustling crowds, the serenity of nature, and the rich cultural traditions that value peace and harmony create an atmosphere that makes it easy for adult travelers to find their own moments of bliss. Whether you’re seeking a romantic getaway or a solo adventure, the South Pacific’s tranquility offers an escape from the ordinary and an opportunity to reconnect with the essence of serenity.

The 10 Best Cruise Lines for Adults, According to a Kid-Free Cruiser

A kids-free zone.

Author image: about face matte fluid eye paint review chelsea candelario

Even though I’ve noticed a trend in the cruise industry leaning towards more family-friendly fleets (I’m looking at you, Royal Caribbean ), a lot of us still see the perks of a kid-free vacation. And while many (if not all) cruises have dedicated spaces for adults on board, sometimes you don’t want to be pigeon-holed into one area for the entirety of your trip in order to get some peace and quiet. So, I went on the hunt to find the best cruise lines for adults, so you can relax and have fun with the 21-and-over crowd.

Princess Cruises

How i chose the best cruise lines for adults.

I’ve been on seven cruises since 2018, including Princess, Norwegian and Royal Caribbean. I have firsthand experience on each cruise line’s amenities, food, entertainment and more. I also spent time researching all the cruise lines on this list (especially the ones I’ve never been on) and did a deep dive to find out key destinations, ship information and star perks aboard their vessels. I even took it a step further and checked out reviews straight from the people—i.e., on places like Reddit, TikTok and travel blogs.

1. Virgin Voyages

Virgin Voyages came on the scene in 2021 and promised to create a cruise line for adults. In four years, it launched three ships: Scarlet Lady, Valiant Lady and Resilient Lady and gave guests full access to all its amenities. Per their website, the cruise line strives to let passengers try out over 20 eateries, participate in unlimited group fitness classes, enjoy free Wi-Fi and check live entertainment at an affordable price.

Speaking of entertainment, the cruise line takes it up a notch with their theme nights like PJ Party (aka a cool pajama party) and We Fancy (dress code: elegant), along with epic dance parties like Heartbeat inspired by Brooklyn’s own House of Yes , performances like Duel Reality which tells a modern interpretation of Romeo & Juliet and immersive experiences to get you involved in the show. Let’s not forget other fun activities to surely make a vacation a memorable one: ala private karaoke booths, casinos and a multi-story nightclub.

Viking Cruises

If you’re searching for a cruise line for adults, Viking should be on the top of your list. The cruise line is best known for their ocean, river and expedition cruises for adults 18 and over. According to  their website , “All guests must be 18 years old on or before the day they are scheduled to embark on their cruise; we do not maintain facilities or services on board for younger individuals.” Since 2000, Viking has always made it their mission to target older travelers, more specifically those over 55 to join their ships, so don’t expect to see any kiddos running around.

Viking currently has over 60 ships in their fleet that travel all around the world. You can take an iconic Western Mediterranean trip (Barcelona to Rome), a Grand  European  tour (Budapest to Amsterdam) or a Great Lakes voyage (Toronto to Minnesota). While many of the ships feature pools, restaurants, a library room and theater, most travelers go for the thrilling excursions and even participate in lectures specifically found on the expedition ships (Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris) that are great for the curious scientist or animal lover.

  • Best for:  adventure seekers
  • Popular Destinations:  Rome, Athens, Sydney, Vancouver, Shanghai
  • Amenities:  restaurants, fitness center, hair salon, shops, bars, spa, pools
  • Price Range:  $1,999 to $79,995 per person

3. Seabourn

This luxurious cruise line provides an intimate and personalized experience that will make you feel like you’re vacationing on a yacht. Per their website, their ships can carry between 264 and 600 guests at time (compared to Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas can hold over 5,000 passengers). As a result, the bookings are extremely popular and limited. (In fact, it appears that most of their summer dates are already sold out.) While the minimum age is 6 years old, the target audience is around 35 and older, according to  Travel Weekly.  So, whether you’re looking for a traditional cruise or an expedition, Seabourn offers trips all around the world for seven to 30 days at sea—which gives you ample time to enjoy a relaxing massage at their spa, try to win big at the casino or have a dip in the pool. All of their ships also include live entertainment, fine dining and an all-inclusive package.

  • Best for:  smaller crowds
  • Minimum Age:  6+
  • Popular Destinations:  Edinburgh, Amsterdam, Lisbon, Monte Carlo, Alaska
  • Amenities:  restaurants, fitness center, hair salon, shops, bars, spa, pools, casino
  • Price Range:  $7,436 to $10,299 per person

best cruise lines for adults a photo of inside of celebrity ship pool deck

4. Celebrity

While Celebrity allows travelers of all ages to board their ships, travel site  Sophisticated Travel  found that most passengers are between their 40s and 50s. As  one redditor commented , “[I] have cruised Celebrity a few times. They have a few amenities for kids, so there are [a] few kids. [However] if [there] were any kids they were not really noticeable. In our experience no waterslides/waterparks equal very few kids on board.” The cruise line has been around since the ‘90s and currently has 16 ships in its fleet, traveling to port stops  like  Key West, Florida  to Athens,  Greece . The best part is you can schedule a weekend getaway or a long holiday for the entire season.

The cruise line prides itself on its extensive food and beverage options, using world-renowned chef dishes in their specialty restaurants and a wide selection of cocktails at your disposal. Plus, fun entertainment and  nightlife events  exclusively for adults like the Undercover, which is an exhibition inspired by the 1920s, and the Jazz Joint that turns the ship’s signature club into a speakeasy. Plus, most ships feature the Solarium, a space only for adults to lounge around and explore the inside pool minus kids.

  • Best for:  entertainment
  • Minimum Age:  6 months
  • Popular Destinations:  Bahamas, Barcelona, Vancouver, Florence, St. Kitts & Nevis
  • Amenities:  globally inspired cuisines, fitness center, shops, bars, spa, pools, casino
  • Price Range:  $237 to $17,535 per person

best cruise lines for adults a photo of oceania cruise ship

5. Oceania Cruises

Oceania Cruises only has six ships, but it’s been around since the early aughts. They sail around the world with destinations to New Zealand, Asia, Africa and 130 other locations. In fact, Oceania offers some of the longest stays on this list. Sure, you can cruise for a weekend or seven days, but the cruise line also offers long durations like a 200 days vacation—departing from Miami, Florida and visiting Caribbean islands (St. Maarten, Barbados) and parts of Brazil before arriving to New York. The cruise line is also known for its culinary experiences and enrichment programs. They have a dedicated library room so you can read comfortably as you sail, as well as guest lectures to learn more about the destinations you’re visiting and classes to learn how the meals are prepared.

And if you’re wondering if the cruise line is ‘adult-enough,’  one Tripadvisor commenter  believes it a huge hit for the 50+ crowd: “I would not recommend it unless it’s a port intensive trip. There are no activities for kids. The average age on board is 60s and above. They have trivia, bingo [and] needlepoint (cooking classes and art classes are hard to get). The entertainment is usually a string quartet and maybe a magician if you’re lucky. I wouldn’t take my adult children in their 30s for fear of their boredom. I would try Disney or Celebrity.”

  • Best for:  world travelers
  • Popular Destinations:  Lisbon, Iceland, Tokyo, Montreal, New York
  • Amenities:  globally inspired cuisines, fitness center, bars, spa, pools
  • Price Range:  $799 to $62,999 per person

best cruise lines for adults norweigan cruise

6. Norwegian Cruise Line

I’ve personally been on three Norwegian cruises ( twice on Prima ) and found very few children on board. While there are many thrill-seeking amenities fit for the whole family, there are plenty of ways to stray away from the younger folks. I found Norwegian Prima’s guests skew a bit older based on their upscale aesthetic around the ship that looks straight out of the MOMA museum. I appreciate Norwegian for its freestyle experience, with specialty and complimentary dining options that provide items outside of your usual pizza and hot dog joint.

The Norwegian Prima is also home to one of largest spas I’ve ever seen at sea. There are two gigantic pools, a few sauna rooms and a large lounge area overlooking the ocean. I spent hours in there just taking in the quiet and calming ambience. Plus, the live productions of  Summer: The Donna Summer Musical  and tribute shows that honor the like of Michael Jackson or Adele are just some of the ways they cater towards millennials, Gen Xers and boomers. Most ships even have dedicated pubs and intimate bars that play classic music from the 60s to early ‘00s, too.

  • Best for:  freestyle dining
  • Popular Destinations:  Alaska, Hawaii, Mykonos, Florence, Iceland
  • Amenities:  restaurants, fitness center, bars, spa, pools, activities
  • Price Range:  $79 to $10,799 per person

best cruise lines for adults a photo of holland america line ship

7. Holland America Line

A cruise line owned by Carnival (a popular family-friend cruise company), Holland America Line is possibly the oldest cruise line of the bunch. It dates back to 1873 and was used as cargo and transportation service. Today, the ships are used for leisure as they travel all around the world, docking in the likes of Hawaii and Japan. You can spend a day—or 53 days—sailing with each ship. According to  Reddit , cruisers have seen families and smaller children, but found the majority of guests were over 40.

A standout feature of their newer ships is the entertainment on board. If you’re a music lover, ships like the Rotterdam and Koningsdam have the B.B King’s Blues Club and Rolling Stone Lounge that cater to playing the classic hits. Holland America Line also partnered with the Professional Pickleball Association to provide state of the art pickleball courts with impeccable views, as well as a casino and a spa, so every guest can find an activity they can enjoy on vacation.

  • Best for:  music lovers
  • Popular Destinations:  Montreal, Rome, Alaska, The Netherlands, Seattle
  • Amenities:  restaurants, fitness center, bars, spa, pools, activities, casino
  • Price Range:  $94 to $27,399 per person

8. Regent Seven Seas Cruise

Regent Seven Seas Cruise currently has six ships put the luxury in luxurious vacation. Owned by Norwegian Cruise Line, Regent has been around for 30 years and continues to be a popular pick for older adults. As  one travel critic shared , the cruise line has an average of passengers that are over 40 on their ships due to its all-inclusive regent experience. The 2-in-1 deal features round-trip flight, unlimited shore excursions, unlimited Wi-Fi and more. They also stand apart from their competitors with their suite-only accommodations. Per  their website , Regent promises incredible ocean views and a private balcony just for you. best cruise lines for adults a photo of silversea cruise ship

9. Silversea Cruises

Silversea is a luxury cruise line that’s great for romantic getaways. Once you step on board, you’re treated to  personalized service  (like 24-hour butler service), part of the inclusive package for each guest. Similar to Regent, there’s unlimited shore excursions, so you can explore every port on your trip. The fleet reaches about 900 destinations, including Galápagos Island, French Polynesia and Antarctica. The cruise line also offers complimentary beverages and fine dining. The most popular is the S.A.L.T Kitchen, which provides dishes based on your destinations. There’s even a more exclusive chef option only on their Nova-class ships for a more intimate setting. It offers the same experience with more food and wine options ready to try out.

  • Best for:  destinations
  • Popular Destinations:  Galapagos, Venice, Norway, Copenhagen, Alaska

best cruise lines for adults a photo inside of princess cruise pool deck

Editor's Pick

10. princess cruises.

I recently traveled with Princess Cruises, and I highly recommend it for adults who aren’t traveling with kids in mind. As mentioned, I’ve been on seven cruises, and this by far has been the least family-friendly cruise line—in a good way! Although there were some kids and teens, the ship was made of mostly older travelers. I was actually surprised by how much it catered to adults over kids. It didn’t have many thrilling amenities like waterslides or an expansive basketball court that usually draw the younger crowds, but there were plenty of things that made the ship thrilling and exciting for mature folks.

For instance, Spellbound, an interactive cocktail experience hat features magicians, an exclusive bar and experimental dishes. There’s also Love by Britto, a dining experience which is heart-themed (down to the utensils) and sets a romantic vibe for couples. Additionally, all Princess ships have many ways to unwind and have fun that cater toward adults, like including their spa, theaters and pool decks. In fact, their latest ship, the Sun Princess, also has the Sanctuary, a pool area set apart from the rest of the ship that’s strictly for adults, so you can lounge under the sun all day without interruption.

  • Best for:  immersive dining
  • Popular Destinations:  Sydney, Vancouver, San Juan, London, Barcelona
  • Price Range:  $127 to $23,398 per person

Best Adults Only Cruise (2024) February 16, 2024

Are you looking for a relaxing and romantic getaway with your partner? Do you want to enjoy the beauty of the sea without the hassle of kids running around? If so, an adults-only cruise might be for you.

After a panel of cruise industry experts nominated their top picks for adults-only cruise ships, readers voted for their favorites, and these 10 ships came out on top because they offer the best adult-centric experiences. Some are completely limited to adults only, while others are largely adult-focused and are less likely to have children aboard.

Star Breeze

No. 10: Star Breeze - Windstar Cruises

Aboard this all-suite ship, guests on the Star Breeze enjoy a spa, a plethora of dining venues, an infinity pool, and a fitness center. Each suite also features bathrooms stocked with L'Occitane bath amenities. Star Breeze welcomes guests ages 8 and up, but ship experiences are more adult-focused.

Queen Mary 2

No. 9: Queen Mary 2 - Cunard

A standard of luxury in cruising, the Queen Mary 2 invites you to do as little or as much as you please. From relaxing at the spa to enjoying afternoon tea, there are many offerings for all interests. You can even bring your beloved pooch along on a transatlantic crossing. The ocean liner welcomes passengers of all ages, but you'll find that there are mostly adults on board.

Royal Clipper

No. 8: Royal Clipper - Star Clippers

Named the world's largest square rigger in service by Guinness World Records in 2001, the Royal Clipper provides luxury cruising in a tall ship experience. For instance, not many cruise ships offer guests the opportunity to climb the mast and take in the view from the crow's nest. Or you can retreat to the bowsprit net suspended over the water or one of the hidden balconies on either side of the bow. Guests of all ages are welcome aboard, but experiences and amenities are adult-focused.

Crystal Symphony

No. 7: Crystal Symphony - Crystal Cruises

Accommodating just 606 guests, the Crystal Symphony invites you to come aboard and leave all your worries behind. Enjoy afternoon tea in the Palm Court, sip a fine cognac in the Connoisseur Club, or relax with a frozen drink by the Seahorse Pool. With nine dining venues, you'll find a wide variety of cuisine, accompanied by several shows and activities to fill your days and nights. Younger passengers are able to sail on this ship, but the experiences are geared more towards adults.

Scenic Eclipse

No. 6: Scenic Eclipse - Scenic

Built to emulate the cruising experience on a luxury yacht, the Scenic Eclipse accommodates approximately 228 guests to ensure each one has an intimate, six-star cruise. Even excursions are elevated to the next level. For instance, head to the polar regions, where you can explore the area by helicopter, submarine, Zodiac vessel, or kayak. Guests aged 12 and up are welcome to sail on Scenic Eclipse, and passengers 18 or under must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Viking Neptune

No. 5: Viking Neptune - Viking Ocean Cruises

This all-veranda ship sails to numerous destinations ranging from the Panama Canal to Hawaii, Scandinavia, and beyond. Spend time at The Nordic Spa for a day of pampering, or head to the sports deck where you start the day with yoga. Take in the view from the infinity pool on the ship's aft or catch a show in the theater. Viking Neptune welcomes guests aged 18 or older.

Azamara Onward

No. 4: Azamara Onward - Azamara

When cruising on board the Azamara Onward, you can visit ports bigger ships can't reach; these include Amalfi, Italy, and Rovinj, Croatia. During your cruise, you can enjoy top-tier cuisine, or sip on an artisan cocktail as you take in music at a cabaret nightclub. This is the ideal cruise for anyone looking to enjoy the sun and sea. And while the ship allows families to sail, Azamara encourages that each passenger be at least 18 years of age.

Viking Mars

No. 3: Viking Mars - Viking Ocean Cruises

When sailing on the Viking Mars, all guests stay in staterooms complete with verandas, free Wi-Fi, and large private bathrooms with heated floors. Ship amenities include a full-service spa, movie theaters, boutiques, two swimming pools, a sports deck, and multiple restaurants. And while this is an ocean cruise ship, it accommodates just 930 guests for a small-ship feel. All passengers must be 18 years old to sail aboard the Viking Mars.

Crystal Serenity

No. 2: Crystal Serenity - Crystal Cruises

As you sail on the Crystal Serenity, take time to gaze at the stars through the glass roof or take in the expansive views from the forward observation deck. For your accommodations, you can choose from the different guest rooms and suites, all outfitted with elevated details and artisanal finishes. Don't forget to take in a game of pickleball or fine-tune your golf game on the putting green. While all ages can enjoy this ship, it caters mainly to adult passengers.

Wind Spirit

No. 1: Wind Spirit - Windstar Cruises

When sailing on Windstar's Wind Spirit, guests will feel like they're on their own private yacht. This four-masted sailing yacht accommodates just 148 guests, so intimacy rules throughout your cruise. Amenities include two primary restaurants, a spa, swimming pool and hot tub, and a water sports platform. Plus, you'll find fresh fruit in your room each afternoon. To sail on the Wind Spirit, guests must be at least 8 years old, but the intimate nature of the ship is geared more towards adults.

The Best Cruise Lines For Adults & Couples

Are you a couple looking for the best cruise line for your vacation? There’s a big difference in cruising when its just adults versus setting sail with an entire family… and it’s more than just wondering if the ship has waterslides for the kiddos.

In fact, most adults and couples looking for a cruise want something completely different than those family cruisers.

Of course, that means adult couples looking for the perfect cruise need to take a hard look at a number of things to determine which line is best for them. From the ship’s atmosphere to your other passengers, there are a number of things that can have an impact on your enjoyment.

For most people, we suggest thinking about all of the following when picking the right cruise line for their trip…

In This Article...

Things to Consider for Adult & Couple Cruises

best cruise lines adults

Having Adults-Only Space : Yes, there are adult-focused cruise lines. But before you simply book one of those, know that they tend to be more expensive than mass market lines. As well, they don’t have near the number of ships or departure ports as larger lines that also welcome families.

In other words, unless you have no problem flying to a port and have a flexible schedule, adult-focused lines might be out of the question.

That’s why it’s smart to instead focus on ships that have appealing adults-only areas. These days most ships have them, but they can vary widely. For instance, on many Royal Caribbean ships there is a Solarium area that is a covered pool designed only for adults. That’s appealing to some, but if you want something that’s more open air, then you might like Carnival’s Serenity Adult-Only Retreat. This is open-air (allowing you to get some sun) with hot tubs and private seating. However, there is often no pool.

In other words, before you book your trip, you’ll want to weigh the pros and cons of any adults-only area the ship may have.

Ship Atmosphere : Just like any hotel, every cruise line has a different atmosphere. Some are fun and outgoing while others are more reserved and stately. It goes without saying that matching up the atmosphere of the cruise line with what you’re looking for in a vacation can make a major impact on your enjoyment.

So how are you supposed to know what a cruise line’s atmosphere is like? Well, you can certainly get some insight from reviews of cruises, but we suggest something even simpler.

Take a look at any cruise line’s website to get a good idea of the image and atmosphere it tries to project. Are the images of families enjoying themselves? Or maybe it’s of a couple enjoying a glass of wine and a sunset? You can get a good hint of the sort of atmosphere on a ship through these marketing materials.

Things for Adults to Do : Part of the fun of a cruise is that there is typically lots to do on the ship. And each new cruise ship brings along new features on board, whether it be rock climbing walls, or go-kart tracks, or even roller coasters . But for many adults and couples, it can seem like many of these things are solely for families or younger kids. Sure, there can appeal to some adults, but not everyone is interested in the biggest and newest waterslide or similar attraction.

That’s why the best cruise lines and ships for adults come with plenty for grown-ups to do as well, outside of those headline-grabbing new features. Whether it be entertainment and shows on board, or more options for social gatherings on the ship — or the aforementioned adults-only areas, you want to find a cruise line that offers plenty for grown-ups to do… and not just families.

Your Other Passengers : It’s only logical that sailing with other people like you is more fun. It wouldn’t make sense for a young couple looking for a romantic vacation to set sail on a Disney cruise loaded with families that have young kids.

Of course, you can’t control who else is on the ship. And no cruise ship is full of passengers that are all the same. That said, the type of trip you take, the time of year, and the cruise line you sail can have a big influence on who you cruise with.

Trips that are longer in length (one week or more) tend to have an older crowd with fewer families and younger passengers than shorter cruises. Trips that sail when school is in session will have fewer kids than trips during the summer or Spring Break. And luxury cruise lines (Celebrity, Princess, etc.) tend to cater to an older crowd.

All of this said, no couple is the same. That means no one cruise line is perfect for every adult. So instead of suggesting one cruise line for everyone, we’ve offered up our top suggestion based on several different groups of people. Keep in mind that it’s hard to go wrong with any cruise, but these lines represent our top picks for each situation.

Best Cruise Line for a Young and Active Couples

best cruise lines adults

Headed out on a honeymoon? Or maybe you are just a younger couple that wants to have a tropical vacation? If so, then your wants in a cruise line are likely very different than some other couples.

If you fall into the young and active group, then we would suggest a trip aboard Royal Caribbean — preferably a larger and newer ship that’s been built in the past ten years.

Why Royal Caribbean? After all, isn’t this considered a family cruise line?

There’s no doubt that the line caters to everyone — families included. But they also offer a lot for younger adults and couples to love. First, there are always a number of active things to do on the ship, from rock climbing to the Flow-Rider standing wave to waterslides and more. If you dread the idea of just having to sit by the pool while at sea, then this is the line for you (although you can certainly do that too).

Furthermore, the adults-only Solarium is a great place to hang out and avoid any kids or families on board. It’s usually covered, so the pool and surrounding area is warm and you don’t have to worry about the outside weather.

Meanwhile, the atmosphere of Royal Caribbean ships is always fun and classy without being too wild nor too stuffy. Your other passengers range everything from families (fewer if you sail during the school year) all the way to older couples. There are also tons of places to eat and drink on the ship — including lots of different types of food for any appetite.

Best Cruise Line For Adults Wanting a Real “Adult” Experience

best cruise lines adults

Virgin Voyages burst on the scene a couple of years  ago in a big way… and for good reason. First and foremost, Virgin is an adults-only cruise line. So if you’re wanting a cruise that is focused solely on adults, then this is your best bet.

Being adults-only, the cruise line can do things that just aren’t possible on a traditional cruise line. That includes everything from shows with cabaret-styled performances to areas where you can actually sunbathe topless. There are yoga classes, hammocks on the balcony, and some killer parties that you just won’t find a match for on mainstream lines.

But it’s also different in other ways. For one, things like gratuities and all food are included in the fare — no buffet is on the ship. Wi-fi is also included. Those headaches that can cause a typical cruise to feel like you have to pay up to get the full experience just aren’t there.

Maybe you’re the sort of person that has been turned off by stereotypical cruise. If so, Virgin Voyages might be just the thing… and not a kid in sight.

Best Cruise Line For Romance

best cruise lines adults

Adults looking for a romantic getaway can do worse than setting sail with Princess Cruises . In fact, the line has an entire section of its website dedicated to travelers looking for romance.

So what makes Princess a winner for couples looking to enjoy each other? First, there is more of a focus on romance than with other cruise lines. For example, if you’re looking for fun and romantic, there’s the Love Boat Disco Deck Party. For others, there are cooking demonstrations and wine-tastings. Food is also a big emphasis, with a number of romantic venues to where you feel like you are dining alone… despite being on a ship with plenty of other passengers.

And while there are places to get married on pretty much any cruise ship, Princess also has anniversary, engagement and honeymoon packages (complete with couples spa services and champagne) available.

Furthermore, the more sophisticated atmosphere of Princess ships mean that fewer families set sail on the line.

Best Cruise Line for Older Couples

best cruise lines adults

The sort of vacation you want as a couple at 60 years old is likely a little different than what you wanted at 30 years old. In fact, you likely want something a little quieter and more luxurious.

For those more mature couples, we’d suggest looking at a cruise with Celebrity — especially aboard their newest Edge-class ships.

Celebrity is a luxury-level cruise line. The emphasis is on stately design, high-end service, and delicious food. Entertainment is geared toward adults, including shows focused on Motown, cabaret shows, and even croquet and bocce ball on the ship’s Lawn Club. Looking to do shopping? The newest ships features Bulgari and Cartier stores, in addition to others.

If you want even higher-end, then look to The Retreat. This is a “resort within a resort” that is its own private spot with upgraded rooms, private restaurant, it’s own lounge and sun deck. These rooms even come with drink package, wi-fi, and tips included. Along with a team there to make sure you cruise is absolutely perfect.

Put simply, Celebrity isn’t for everyone. If you are traveling with kids, it’s likely you’ll want a different line. But if you are a distinguished couple wanting to enjoy the finer things in life, Celebrity should be exactly what you’re looking for.

Honorable Mention for Adult Cruising

best cruise lines adults

One major cruise line deserves a mention for being ideal for adults. It just so happens that in our categories, they were slightly topped by another line each time. Norwegian Cruise Line, however, offers an amazing amount for adults to love — especially when sailing on their newest Prima-class cruise ships.

For one, NCL offers a lot to do on its ships that will keep active couples engaged. You can drive go-karts, take a plunge on some extreme slides, and more. The programming is adult focused, with a number of Broadway shows brought to life on the cruise ship. High-end dining? Of course.

What might appeal heavily to adults is that the cruise line — especially with its newest ships — is focused heavily on style and design. Instead of a cruise ship, new ships look more like a high-end contemporary hotel.

While other lines might take the lead in specific categories, Norwegian is a fantastic all-around option for adults.

Best Adults Cruise Overall: Viking Cruises

About Viking Cruises

Viking Cruises has a lot to offer passengers — with sailings on rivers and oceans and even expeditions to far-flung locations. Viking Cruises sails all seven continents, with trips starting at seven nights and lasting up to 180. The company focuses on the destination but doesn’t skimp on the journey to get there, and customers will find plenty to do ( and eat !) on board the ships while traveling to the destinations. Cruises start at $1,999 and reach upwards of $80,000 for the 180-day Viking World Voyage. Viking Cruises has some of the pricier cruises, but the experiences on offer will make the price worth it.

Why We Like It

Viking Cruises offer some of the most unique experiences — from a submarine excursion to a romantic trip down the Danube. It’s a well-rounded cruise line that sails both rivers and oceans all over the world and offers experiences unlike what you’ll find on any other cruise line. This company truly focuses on enrichment and opening passengers’ eyes to new experiences. Plus, your cruise fare on an ocean cruise covers an excursion in each port — because Viking wants passengers to get out and explore the destinations. This cruise line is for adventurers who have time (and money) and who want to learn about the world.

Best Cruise for Couples: Virgin Voyages

Scarlet lady Virgin Voyages Cruise Ship

About Virgin Voyages

Virgin Voyages are totally child-free on its three ships, with another coming in 2025. The relatively new cruise line, which first launched in 2021, sails around the Caribbean, Europe, and North America. Passengers can find great deals on board Virgin Voyages, with prices starting as low as $800 per cabin for a three-night European cruise. Sailings range from just a few nights to over two weeks, so you’ll find a little bit of everything.

When you’re looking to escape the kids at home — or just kids in general — and have a getaway with your partner, do it with Virgin Voyages. The cruise line is adults only and is all about having fun. With this cruise line, you’ll find plenty of things to do with your partner, whether it’s enjoying an evening show, taking a trip to the spa, lounging by the pool, enjoying dinner in one of the many restaurants, or dancing the night away in the club on board. Once you set sail on one of Virgin Voyages’ cruises, there’s a good chance you’ll come back again and again

Best Cruise for Excursions: Azamara

Woman on a boat watching the sea

About Azamara

Azamara has four small cruise ships and specializes in world travel. Though this cruise line offers your typical shorter cruises, it also offers the World Voyage each year, which lasts for 155 nights and travels to 37 countries. While that unique trip starts at $88,000 for an interior stateroom, a regular cruise can cost as low as $1,100 per person (for a double occupancy room). Azamara also isn’t specifically adults-only but is a luxury cruise line that caters to the older crowd (and has a smaller capacity), so it has a bit of a slower pace and high-end feel while on board.

The Azamara cruise line can truly take you nearly anywhere in the world and bring you to once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Whether you’re sailing around Africa, South America, the Mediterranean , or Asia, you can try any number of activities while on your trip. Sailings range anywhere from five days to over 100 days, and while vacations (and the excursions) can run a steep price tag, the ships are luxurious and small and are taking passengers to some places that they may never have otherwise traveled to. If you’re looking for a well-rounded trip that has a little bit of everything all in one go, this cruise has it.

Best Cruise for Relaxation: Regent Seven Seas Cruises

White Regent Cruise Ship

About Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Regent Seven Seas Cruises has six luxurious ships to choose from, and no detail was missed when building them. Beautifully decorated, each ship will have you feeling like a million bucks from the moment you step on board. Cruises go all over the world, so you have your pick of where you’d like to go. Prices start at $3,600 for an all-inclusive two-passenger cruise for seven nights. The most luxurious trip on offer right now is the 168-night around-the-world trip for $100,000. The all-inclusive two-passenger cruise goes through South America, the Arctic, Australia, Asia, and more.

If you’re looking for a cruise that’ll have you in the lap of luxury, Regent Seven Seas Cruises is it. Once you pay for your all-inclusive cruise, everything is taken care of. Your cruise fare includes your flight to and from the port, airport transfer, excursions, on-board restaurants and drinks, Wi-Fi, gratuities, and so much more. All you have to do is show up and enjoy it. This vacation comes with a high price tag, but you pay one time, and then you get to sit back and relax.

Best Budget Cruise: Celebrity Cruises

Large Blue and white Celebrity cruise ship in the water

About Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity Cruises, which is based in Miami, has more than a dozen ships to choose from and sails all over the world with more than 300 ports of call. Sailings range anywhere from three days to two weeks, with prices as low as $200 to upwards of $16,000. Ship sizes vary greatly, with the largest ship carrying over 3,000 passengers and the smallest boat holding under 100. Amenities on board range from spas to restaurants, pools to workout facilities (though they vary by ship).

Going on a cruise doesn’t have to mean breaking the bank. With Celebrity Cruises, you can take a quick three-day cruise for as little as $200 per person and have the escape you need. There are plenty of jaunts from South Florida to Key West and the Bahamas — but you can also sail farther and longer if that’s what you choose. Either way, you can certainly find a deal with Celebrity Cruises, as the company is also always offering deals, including discounts for additional passengers, restaurant coupons, and more.

Factors to Consider When Choosing a Cruise Line for Adults

How you want to spend your time.

A cruise ship is essentially a floating city — and it has a little bit of everything on board. But not every boat is created equal. Consider how you want to spend your time on board before you pick a cruise line. Do you want to spend your time exercising, relaxing, swimming, or in the spa? Look for a cruise line that has the amenities that suit your needs properly.

What Is Your Budget?

When booking any vacation, you always want to consider your budget. Cruise lines will vary in price, so consider how much you’re willing to spend, the length of the cruise, the type of stateroom you can afford, and the destinations within your budget while considering where you’ll go.

Your Cruising Style

In addition to considering what you want to do and how much you’re spending, think about the type of cruise you want to take. Is this a romantic cruise, an adventure cruise, a relaxing cruise, etc.? Look for a cruise line that can meet those specific needs.

What Cruise Line Is the Best for Adults?

Viking Cruises is the best overall cruise line for adults. It offers tons of international sailing destinations and top-notch service on board. It also offers unique experiences while you’re traveling.

Which Cruise Line Has the Highest Rating?

All of the cruise lines we listed have high ratings from customers and other professional reviewers. We chose Viking Cruises as the best overall cruise line because it has excellent customer ratings and comes highly recommended.

What Is an Adults-Only Cruise?

Some cruise lines have an age limit, which means no one under 18 is allowed on board. These cruises are designed for adults only and cater to a certain crowd. This means you won’t have any children on board during your cruise.

The 6 best Royal Caribbean ships for adults

Megan duBois

Royal Caribbean is known for some of the world's largest cruise ships , over-the-top onboard amenities and some of the best entertainment at sea — perfect for young families. While Royal Caribbean does not run adults-only cruises, grownups traveling without children will be glad to know that certain ships seem tailor-made for couples, mom-and-daughter duos or parents traveling with their adult children.

With over 25 ships in its fleet, Royal Caribbean has a ship for every type of traveler, not just families with young kids. Whether you're looking for fewer upper-deck attractions and more places to relax outside or upscale dining and entertainment for a date night after an exciting day in port, this cruise line has you covered.

Also, most ships offer adults-only pools and lounges where you can escape from the younger cruisers on board if you so choose. Cruisers looking for a party scene can enjoy nightclubs open until the wee hours of the morning, and foodies can find an elevated dining experience at the line's many specialty restaurants.

For the avid traveler looking to get away from the standard Caribbean sailings, some of the line's ships have sailings that go to unique ports of call where you can immerse yourself in a new culture and indulge in local culinary delights.

If you're looking for a more grownup vacation, these are the six best Royal Caribbean cruise ships for adults.

Rhapsody of the Seas

best cruise lines adults

Don't overlook Rhapsody of the Seas just because it's one of the oldest ships in the Royal Caribbean fleet. It still has lots to offer adults looking for a fun getaway, especially to Europe, where you can book back-to-back port-intensive cruises for a customized vacation.

Rhapsody of the Seas offers some unique sailings, including a two-night sailing from Israel that can be tacked onto longer Mediterranean sailings, such as five-night Greek Isles cruises. For an even longer sailing, consider the 14-night transatlantic cruise, which stops in Alicante, Spain, the Canary Islands and the Bahamas.

Related: Best Mediterranean cruises for every type of traveler

The ship is also one of Royal Caribbean's smallest, carrying 1,998 passengers at double occupancy (compared to 5,734 on Wonder of the Seas ). Yet it's got much to offer adults looking to relax after a long day of sightseeing. Book a relaxing treatment, such as a couples massage or solo facial, in the serene oasis of the Vitality Spa. Or take a dip in the Solarium, the adults-only retreat with loungers, pools and panoramic ocean views.

In the evening, watch the sunset at the ship's signature Viking Crown Lounge, where floor-to-ceiling windows surround clusters of cozy lounge chairs just beckoning adults to linger over their favorite drink and enjoy the view. After dark, the lounge becomes a dance club with a DJ.

Grownups can also enjoy evening dance parties and movies under the stars on the pool deck as the ship sails to its next port of call. Chops Grille, the onboard steakhouse, provides an intimate setting for a romantic dinner for two.

Anthem of the Seas

best cruise lines adults

Adults looking for unique onboard activities, mixed with a manageable size and more grownup vibe, will enjoy the 4,180-passenger Anthem of the Seas.

On board, the North Star, a pod-like viewing deck unique to this class of ships, suspends travelers 300 feet above the ocean for incredible views. We recommend taking the ride on a port day to get a birds-eye view of the shore and city skylines. For a different kind of thrill, try the RipCord by iFLY skydiving simulator, which gives you the sensation of free falling.

Of course, no cruise is complete without dinner and a show. One of the more unique things about Anthem of the Seas is its four smaller main dining rooms rather than one enormous main restaurant. Of the four venues, The Grande is the most elegant and tends to draw in more adults. After dinner, head to the theater to see "We Will Rock You," a musical tribute to Queen that originated in London's West End. Anthem is the only Royal Caribbean ship to offer this production.

The ship also caters to adults with the time and desire for longer vacations, with seven- to 14-night summer cruises to the Norwegian fjords, Canary Islands and the Mediterranean. If you want to stay stateside, there are seven and eight-night sailings that go from Cape Liberty to Royal Caribbean's private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay . You can find a more grownup vibe at the Chill Island beach or the swim-up bar in the Oasis Lagoon pool. The line has hinted that an adults-only beach is coming soon.

Quantum of the Seas

best cruise lines adults

The longer the cruise, the fewer the kids. So, for a very adult Royal Caribbean cruise, choose the 4,180-passenger Quantum of the Seas for its longer sailings to Hawaii , the South Pacific or Australia. You'll visit some of the most beautiful islands in the world and find far fewer kids on board due to the duration and school-year timing of the itineraries.

For an adult-focused cruise to Alaska , try Quantum's weeklong voyages to the Last Frontier from May through September. The ship sails to such exciting ports of call as Skagway, Sitka and Ketchikan and offers scenic cruising through the Endicott Arm and by Dawes Glacier.

You'll find plenty of kids on board during Alaska sailings. However, adults rarely have to go far to find a place without kids. (Plus, the ship's excellent kids club keeps many young cruisers entertained and out of sight.)

Adults can seek out age-appropriate fun at the onboard escape room, watch an outdoor movie under the stars or embrace their inner child by shooting hoops or driving bumper cars at the SeaPlex. By day, enjoy a drink or snack and take in the 270-degree views in the Two70 lounge. Return at night when the space transforms into an immersive theater using high-tech elements to put on musical performances.

If you're looking for great views from the pool or hot tub, head to the indoor, adults-only Solarium, where you never have to worry about the cold Alaska weather or the hot Hawaiian sun making you uncomfortable. The forward-facing venue offers unobstructed views from the plentiful lounge chairs around the windows.

Quantum of the Seas, like sister ship Anthem, has a multitude of dining venues that serve great dishes around the ship. A meal at Wonderland is worth the additional cost because it's as much a feast for the eyes as it is for the taste buds. The molecular gastronomy menu features delightful bites of pork belly, tuna sashimi and buffalo chicken presented in a playful way that guests might not expect (and most kids may not appreciate).

Mariner of the Seas

best cruise lines adults

The 3,114-passenger Mariner of the Seas is an ideal ship for multigenerational cruises, with plenty of activities to please everyone from young adults to grandparents.

Older adults play cards or read in the serene library and card room or enjoy the ocean views from the Solarium. Young adults can pack their day with high-energy activities, such as laser tag, ice skating and boogie boarding on the FlowRider surf simulator.

At night, everyone in the family can come together for a meal. Reserve a table at Jamie's Italian for a special group dinner. All of the pasta is made fresh, including the signature truffle tagliatelle, where thick noodles are tossed in truffle cream with fresh truffles and a hint of nutmeg. The fan-favorite "meat plank" is easy to share and laden with salami, prosciutto, mozzarella and focaccia.

Afterward, the group can catch the ice skating show (you're never too old to enjoy the musical numbers and colorful costumes) or musical performances in the main theater before the younger set heads to the bars and the older generation turns in for the night.

Mariner of the Seas sails from Galveston, Texas, and Port Canaveral, Florida, to destinations across the Bahamas and Caribbean. Shorter four or five-night sailings are a great way to fit in a long weekend away, especially for younger adults with less time off work. Longer eight-night sailings to the islands make for a true getaway.

Jewel of the Seas

best cruise lines adults

Adults who relish scenic cruising should look no further than the 2,702-passenger Jewel of the Seas. The beautiful ship travels to a wide range of destinations, with fall foliage sailings in Canada and New England , adventurous itineraries to the Arctic Circle and northern destinations like Iceland and Greenland, and traditional cruises to the Caribbean.

The smaller ship is more desirable for adults looking to enjoy the destinations they are visiting rather than trying out the latest attractions at sea. The Viking Crown Lounge offers a quiet getaway during the day for looking out over the passing scenery and a hyped-up dance club at night. You can even get great landscape views from the glass elevators running along the sides of the ship.

No matter where you sail, Jewel of the Seas offers plenty of onboard activities suitable for adults. Take an all-access tour of the inner parts of the ship most people never see, test your luck at table games or slot machines in the casino, or dance the night away at the '70s disco party.

Foodies and wine enthusiasts may never tire of the many bars and lounges on Jewel of the Seas. Try a variety of wines, either by the glass or the bottle, at Vintages wine bar, people watch and enjoy a cocktail at the Centrum lobby bar, or grab a seat at Vortex, where the spinning bar slowly rotates everyone around the room.

When it's time to eat, head to Giovanni's Table, where Italian dishes are prepared and served like they are at your nonna's house. The kids might turn up their noses, but grownups will love the signature dishes, such as the grilled octopus appetizer and the housemade linguine with clams entree.

Harmony of the Seas

best cruise lines adults

Harmony of the Seas is one of the largest cruise ships in the world, carrying 5,497 passengers at double occupancy. It's got activities for all ages and interests, with themed areas of the ships – called neighborhoods – dedicated to different pursuits, such as entertainment or swimming and sports. Adults can have thrilling experiences during the day, find their zen before heading off to dinner and enjoy entertainment late into the night, all by moving between a few decks.

Adventurous adults will love zip lining over the top of the Boardwalk or sliding down the Ultimate Abyss, a 10-story dry slide. Those looking for a more laid-back vacation can book treatment at the Vitality Spa, sample different varietals at a wine tasting or learn how to make sushi.

The ship's Central Park area is romantic and made for adults. It's a fantastic place to sit back with a cocktail and people-watch. Here, you'll find upscale shops, restaurants and bars with indoor and outdoor seating set amid a garden of real plants and trees. To spend a full evening in Central Park, start at the Trellis Bar for wine or cocktails, then head to 150 Central Park, where the menu highlights seasonal ingredients.

Those looking for a more exciting evening will want to hang around Royal Promenade, which feels more like a buzzy city street than a cruise ship deck. Here, an English pub, a bar staffed by robots and a Latin-inspired lounge all come together to make for a fun night out. For a full night of entertainment, check out a live performance of "Grease" in the ship's main theater.

Harmony of the Seas sets sail from Galveston and Miami, taking cruisers to the Caribbean on four- to eight-night sailings. The Miami sailings all stop at Perfect Day at CocoCay, St. Thomas, Puerto Rico and Honduras.

Bottom line

The best Royal Caribbean ships for adults may still have kids on board. However, they also offer something extra for grownups — whether that's a more intimate ship size, out-of-the-ordinary itineraries, incredible choice of bars and restaurants, serene hangouts or thrilling attractions for active adults.

No matter which ship you choose, cruising with Royal Caribbean offers the ability to visit some of the world's most sought-after destinations on a ship that teems with varied activities. While you won't find adults-only Royal Caribbean cruises, you can tailor your cruise experience on these six ships to focus on more grown-up pursuits.

The 11 Best Luxury Cruise Lines, According to T+L's Experts

These luxury cruise lines offer stunning suites, fine dining, and exceptional itineraries.

Meena Thiruvengadam is a lifelong traveler and veteran journalist who has visited more than 50 countries across six continents. Her writing has appeared in The Wall Street Journal , Departures , TripSavvy , and other publications.

best cruise lines adults

Cruising is back — and you might even say it's better than ever. "Vacations at sea are suddenly one of the biggest things in travel," Travel + Leisure cruise expert Paul Brady reported recently, as summer air travel is looking progressively messier but the cruise industry continues to stabilize post-pandemic. For those looking to plan a cruise, whether it's a last-minute trip for the summer or a 2024 around-the-world cruise, we've narrowed down the best luxury cruise lines to ferry you to some of the world's most mesmerizing destinations in comfort. Here, our favorite luxury cruise lines in the world.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

When this luxury cruise line says it's all-inclusive, it's not overstating. Everything from shore excursions, Wi-Fi, and laundry to gratuities, top-shelf liquor, and business-class international flights are included with Regent Seven Seas Cruises ' fares. While each luxurious suite features ocean views, nothing beats the view from the epic 4,000-square-foot, two-bedroom Regent Suite, which has two wraparound balconies, three walk-in closets, two Picasso lithographs, and a grand piano.

For the best in-suite views, book a room at the back of the ship, Kelly Cochrane, executive chef of Regent Seven Seas Cruises tells T+L.

Oceania Cruises

Oceania Cruises has just seven ships, but the debut of the brand-new Oceania Vista catapults this cruise line into the luxury division. The cruise line's relatively new Go Local shore excursions for small groups bring travelers to under-the-radar destinations, T+L contributing editor and long-time cruiser Sarah Greaves-Gabbadon reported recently. Her 2022 cruise on Riviera included 70 excursions "from canoeing Croatia’s Cetina River to cooking classes in Athens."

If you've ever dreamed of having your own butler, Silversea is the luxury cruise line for you. In fact, Silversea's butlers take white-glove service to a whole new level — they'll handle your laundry with more care than you do, scour port towns to find your favorite tastes of home, and even help you pack and unpack your suitcase. Further, Silversea's new culinary program, nicknamed S.A.L.T. (for Sea and Land Taste), brings the taste of destinations on board through cooking classes. Of course, there's no need to cook for yourself aboard a Silversea ship, as each one features several restaurants with multi-course menus to whet your appetite every night.

Viking Cruises

Viking Cruises is a river and ocean cruise line that recently added expedition sailings and the Great Lakes trips to its repertoire. "T+L readers rave about the consistency of Viking's vessels and their Scandinavian design," cruise expert Fran Golden reported when Viking once again topped T+L's World's Best Awards last year. Viking came in at No. 1 in T+L's best mid-size ship category and river cruise category. Golden said the WBA Hall of Fame honoree's 50 river "longships" are "light-filled floating boutique hotels."

Laureen Robert / Courtesy of Ponant

French luxury cruise line Ponant aims to make passengers feel as if they're traveling on their own private yachts. Guests enjoy Ladurée macarons, Veuve Clicquot Champagne, and luxurious Hermès bath products on board. Each of the company's ships features an onboard spa with massage cabins and either a Turkish bath or sauna. Ponant's luxurious small ships sail to remote destinations like Antarctica, incorporating once-in-a-lifetime experiences such as eclipse spotting from the edge of the earth. The company also partners with Smithsonian and Disney on certain sailings.

Seabourn cruises to all seven continents, and most recently launched Seabourn Venture , "marking the first time the Carnival Corporation–owned luxury cruise line will offer adventurous sailings on an expedition ship built for extreme environments," Brady reported. (The sibling ship to Venture , Seabourn Pursuit arrives later this year.) The World's Best Award-winning cruise line has all-suite ships and "is known for its onboard service and over-the-top food including complimentary caviar and Thomas Keller steakhouses on ships such as the  Seabourn Ovation, " Brady said.

Windstar Cruises

Windstar Cruises ' luxury small ships call on 150 ports throughout Europe, Central America, the Caribbean, and the South Pacific, and there's no way you'll go hungry on the journey. Exquisite onboard menus have been designed by acclaimed chefs from Michelin-starred restaurants. (You'll have to pay extra for alcohol, but all meals and a Windstar signature onboard barbecue — a feast of whole suckling pig, shrimp brochette, and more — are included.) The cruise line is not only a T+L World's Best Awards Hall of Fame honoree, it has a "long-standing partnership with the James Beard Foundation ," Brady reported, and regularly brings chefs on board for culinary-focused sailings. Yes, chef.

Courtesy of Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours

Whether it's a river or an ocean you want to cruise, Scenic can take you there in style. The luxury cruise line operates river cruises in Europe and Asia, while ocean cruises on Scenic Eclipse (and the forthcoming Scenic Eclipse II ) can take guests to Antarctica, the Arctic, Australia, South America, and Greenland, among other coveted destinations. On board, you'll find fine dining, expansive spas and fitness facilities, and butler service.

Cunard Line

Jonathan Atkin / Courtesy of Cunard Line

This British luxury cruise line is known for its transatlantic service, which also transports pets between its headquarters in Southampton, England, and New York City. Cunard operates three ships with a fourth in the works, though only the Queen Mary 2 sails the transatlantic route. It's a cruise line that takes formality seriously; white-gloved waiters serve afternoon tea each day at 3:30 p.m. State rooms include 24-hour room service and evening turndown service with chocolates. Don't forget your tux, the gala nights are black tie.

Paul Gauguin Cruises

Roger Paperno / Courtesy of Paul Gauguin Cruises

Paul Gauguin Cruises operates just one ship, but it is exquisite, hosting 330 guests and sailing only in the South Pacific to destinations like Tahiti, Fiji, Tonga, and the Cook Islands. The ship is small enough to access private ports at remote beaches and take travelers well off the beaten path. Named the best small-ship ocean cruise line in T+L's 2022 World's Best Awards, Golden said the line is known for Tahitian-inspired massage techniques in the onboard spa and noted that cruisers particularly love the wonderful staff.

Celebrity Cruises

Steve Dunlop / Courtesy of Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity Cruises ' new Edge Series ships are taking things up a notch. Celebrity's signature Iconic Suites on board the Celebrity Edge and Apex offer panoramic views from above the ship's bridge; each suite boasts more than 2,500 square feet of space, including expansive 690-square-foot terraces, and comes with two bedrooms and two bathrooms. Celebrity Beyond , which debuted in 2022, accommodates 3,260 guests has 32 bars and restaurants, like Le Voyage by chef Daniel Boulud, and two-story villas on board. Beyond 's sibling ship, Ascent , will be delivered later this year.

Best Cruise Lines for an Alaskan Cruise: Perfect Picks for Every Traveler

' src=

Taking an Alaskan cruise is on most cruise enthusiasts’ bucket lists, and for good reason. Alaska is one of the most ruggedly beautiful, unspoiled locations I have ever visited. However, due to its remote location and large size, exploring Alaska can be a daunting and expensive feat. This is where cruising can help. You don’t want to just book any cruise, of course. They definitely aren’t all the same.

As a frequent cruiser and travel advisor specializing in cruises, I know firsthand the ins and outs of cruising to Alaska. I’m here to help you make the best decision, so your once-in-a-lifetime experience will be everything you imagined.

Cruise lines aren’t a one-size-fits-all situation, so I’ll break this down based on my personal experience and feedback from numerous clients.

Antarctic Cruising boat mountains

Best Budget-Friendly Cruiseline for an Alaskan Cruise

When it comes to budget-friendly family fun on a cruise, you really can’t beat Royal Caribbean. With excellent family entertainment options and plenty to do on the ship, booking Royal Caribbean to Alaska will not disappoint.

Royal Caribbean offers Alaska sailings from Seattle, WA, and Vancouver, BC. Both homeports offer similar itinerary options with beautiful Alaskan stops in Juneau, Ketchikan, Icy Strait Point , and Skagway.

Pro Tip: If you are looking for nonstop action on the ship, book with one of Royal’s larger ships, such as Quantum or Ovation of the Seas (sails from Seattle). If you want a slightly quieter experience, a smaller, older ship like the Radiance or Brilliance of the Seas out of Vancouver may suit you better.

Alaska, Cruise, sailing, glacier bay national park

Best Family Cruiseline for Alaska

Disney Cruise Line is hands down one of the very best when it comes to cruising, not just to Alaska, but anywhere. Even if you aren’t a Disney fanatic, you will have an incredible experience on board any of their ships.

Disney offers Alaskan itineraries from Vancouver, BC. If you are a US Citizen and do not have a valid passport , this option won’t work for you, as they don’t sail out of Seattle. With only one ship from their fleet sailing Alaska (the Wonder), sailings are limited, and you’ll want to book early.

On board a Disney Alaskan Cruise, you’ll experience cool character meet and greets, excellent dining and entertainment, an impeccably clean ship, and the best customer service at sea. Disney also offers wonderful child care and kids club experiences so parents can spend adult time without guilt.

Disney has great itineraries with stops in Sitka, Victoria, BC, Juneau, Skagway, and Ketchikan, as well as glacier viewing of the Hubbard Glacier and Stikine Ice Cap. Take advantage of the carefully curated shore excursions offered through Disney. They are truly top-notch.

Pro Tip: If you want to save a little money on a Disney Cruise, book a GTY room instead of picking your stateroom. This saves considerably, and you will get a room in at least the category you selected, but sometimes, even an upgrade.

Alaska White Cruise Ship on Sea

Best Cruise Line for Older Adults Sailing to Alaska

Adults looking for a more upscale experience should consider sailing Celebrity to Alaska. While not an adults-only cruise line, Celebrity has fewer children than other lines. Celebrity is known for its upscale atmosphere, excellent dining options, and gorgeous ship designs.

You can start your Alaska cruise in Seattle or Vancouver or embark from Seward, Alaska, for a reverse cruise ending in Seattle. Celebrity has port stops in Alaska’s “normal” ports, plus a day or two of glacier viewing.

If you have the time, booking a cruise tour through Celebrity is one thing to consider. With a cruise tour, your cruise sails only one direction instead of being a round trip, and at the end of the cruise, you’ll stay in hotels and continue exploring Alaska with cruise-sponsored excursions.

For example, you may board the ship in Seattle, head to Juneau, Ketchikan, and Skagway, and end your cruise in Seward. You’ll debark the ship and spend a few more days on your selected tour, perhaps taking a tough hike in Denali National Park, Fairbanks to view the northern lights or even Talkeetna for dog sledding or gold panning.

Pro Tip: You can take a cruise tour in either direction. Check airfare and cruise prices to see which direction would work best for you.

Alaska Royal Princess cruise ship

Best All Around Cruise Line for an Alaskan Cruise

Each cruise line above offers something special for cruising to Alaska , but my personal favorite is Princess Cruise Line. While it’s not my favorite line for other itineraries, Princess really does Alaska well.

Princess has good customer service, nice ships, decent food, and advanced technology, such as their medallion program, but where Princess shines in Alaska is their itineraries.

Setting sail from Seattle, you’ll visit the typical inside passage ports of call, such as Juneau, Ketchikan, and Skagway (my favorite), but you’ll also get a unique experience that most cruise lines can’t offer: a day in underrated national park Glacier Bay.

Glacier Bay National Park is a pristine, incredibly beautiful area with narrow passageways, large bays, towering mountains, and some of the most incredible glaciers I’ve ever seen. To keep this area protected and pristine, not all cruise lines are allowed to sail here, which is why I’ll choose Princess repeatedly.

On your visit to Glacier Bay, you will not leave the ship. Instead, the captain will drive very slowly through the area giving guests incredible views from every angle. A park ranger is brought on board and will narrate over the loudspeakers as you explore the park. The ranger points out various landmarks and things to watch for, teaches history and conservation, and keeps an eye out for wildlife. We saw whales, eagles, bears, otters, and the cutest little seal hitching a ride on an iceberg passing by our ship.

The highlight of the day is the impressive Margerie Glacier, which is 21 miles long, 250 feet tall, and reaches 100 feet under the water line.  Margerie Glacier is over 4,000 years old and one of the few glaciers still advancing instead of retreating.

The ship slowly moves towards the glacier and then stops. It’s perfectly silent on the ship. All you can hear is the glacier’s creaking and cracking. You’ll sit motionless for quite a few minutes, and then the ship turns in place, allowing guests on the other side to sit and enjoy the view.  After everyone has had a chance to witness this marvel, the ship slowly creeps back out of the bay. It takes the full day to navigate in and out of Glacier Bay National Park, and the scenery is incredible.

Princess also offers cruise tours like Celebrity, so it is possible to see Glacier Bay and Denali National Park on the same trip.

Pro Tip: Book a balcony cabin if you can. The views are incredible. On the Glacier Bay day, you can sit in your cabin or out on the balcony and enjoy uninterrupted views.  You’ll be able to hear the ranger talk through your TV, so you won’t miss anything. We stayed in our pajamas all day and watched the scenery pass by. We even ordered room service for lunch so we wouldn’t miss anything.

Your Alaskan Dream Cruise Awaits

Sailing to Alaska is truly an experience that every traveler should have at least once. Once you go, you’ll want to return again and again. Choosing the right cruise line for you will elevate your experience, and you’ll have the trip of a lifetime.

It is important to remember that no matter which lines you sail, all cruise lines only sail Alaska between May and September. The best weather is late June to early August.

With such a limited amount of time available, Alaska sailings sell out very quickly. I recommend my clients book at least one year in advance to get their preferred ship, itinerary, and cabin. While you can book later, remember you may not get the optimal experience by waiting until the last minute.
