The benefit of this document is that Australian travelers are not required to get a visa before the visit.

After getting the documents, tourists can stay in the country for a determined period of time.

Australian passport holders need to have an eVisa to enter 34 countries.

An electronic visa, or eVisa, is an electronic document that serves as a travel authorization.

All the necessary documents needed to get an eVisa must be scanned, you can’t send physical copies.

The traveler must have his eVisa before leaving the country.

Yes, this type of visa is called a visa-on-arrival, and Australian citizens can obtain it in 41 countries.

Can Australians get a visa online?

Yes, this type of visa is called eVisa and Australian passport owners can obtain it in 34 countries.

The Australian passport allows its holders to visit a wide variety of countries without needing a visa.

To be exact, Australian citizens can visit 113 countries visa-free, which makes more than half of the countries in the world!

This is a list of visa-free countries for Australian passport holders. Australia has the 9th most powerful passport in the world , according to a recent report by the Henley Passport Index. Their citizens can travel visa-free and obtain a visa on arrival to 183 countries around the globe.

As of 1st May 2020, Australian   citizens had visa-free access to 141 countries and territories .

Recently the Henley Passport Index released the world’s new passport rankings based on how many countries people could enter without a visa. The Australian passport landed at visa-free entry to 189 out of 227 destinations. According to Smart Traveller , this is where you can travel to without the worry of organising or paying for a visa. 

Angola - Visit beaches and deserts in Angola visa-free for 30 days, with a maximum of 90 days per year. 

Botswana - You don't need a visa if you're a tourist visiting Botswana for up to 90 days, but if you're travelling with children, you might need extra documents. 

Eswatini - Aussies can enter Eswatini for up to 30 days without a visa. Other things to note: your passport must be valid for six months after departure from Eswatini and have two blank pages for stamps.

Lesotho - If you’re keen to visit Lesotho, you can travel there for up to 30 days without a visa.

Malawi - From February 2024, if you're travelling on an Australian passport, you won't need a visa if you’re visiting Malawi for up to 90 days. 

Morocco -  Morocco is visa-free for Aussies travelling there for less than 3 months. 

Namibia - Tourists can visit Namibia for up to 3 months without a visa.

Rwanda - Citizens of Commonwealth countries receive free 30-day tourist visas for Rwanda on arrival.

Seychelles - You don't need a visa to enter the Seychelles as a tourist. You'll receive a visitor's permit on arrival which can run for a period up to three months.

South Africa - Travel around South Africa visa-free for up to 90 days. 

Tunisia - The same goes for Tunisia. Aussies can explore the Northern African country for 90 days or less without a visa. 

Zambia - Australian passport holders can enter Zambia without a visa for 90 days in any period of 12 months.

Argentina - Visit the Euro-esque country in South America for up to 90 days without a visa, but you’ve got to have evidence you’re leaving the country.

Belize - You can see Belize and all its wonders for 30 days or less without a visa.

Bolivia - The same goes for Bolivia : visa-free travel for up to 30 days.

Brazil - Aussies can visit Brazil visa-free for 90 days over a 12-month period. 

Colombia - Check out Colombia without a visa for 90 days or less, but you’ll need to complete a free online form on the Migracion Colombia website before your flight.

Costa Rica - Hang out with sloths in Costa Rica for 90 days or less and worry not about getting yourself a visa.

Ecuador - There seems to be a pattern here… you can stay in Ecuador for up to 90 days without a visa.

Guyana - Entry into Guyana for up to 30 days = no visa. 

Jamaica - Jamaica is visa-free for Aussies for up to 6 months for tourism, and up to 30 days for business purposes.

Mexico - If you hold an Australian passport, you don’t need a visa to visit Mexico for up to 180 days. That’s six months. 

Panama - If you arrive by air or land, you won't need a visa for up to 180 days.

Paraguay - Aussies don’t require visitor visas to enter Paraguay for up to 90 days.

Peru - For a Peruvian adventure, you can get a permit to stay for up to 90 days when you arrive. 

The Bahamas - You’ll need a valid outbound flight to prove you’re not overstaying the 90-day visa-free rule of The Bahamas .  

Uruguay - Australian tourists can enter Uruguay without a visa for up to 90 days when travelling on a regular passport. 

Venezuela - Similar requisites apply for Venezuelan travel. You can head there visa-free for less than 90 days, but you’ll need a passport that’s valid for 6 months after departure and proof of an outbound flight. 

China - China’s new visa-free travel means Aussies can travel the country for up to 15 days without the hassle of getting paperwork together. 

Japan - Australian passport holders don't need a visa if they’re visiting the Land of the Rising Sun for less than 90 days.

Kazakhstan - Visa-free entry is available for Australians visiting Kazakhstan , as long as you don’t overstay your 30 days.

Kyrgyz Republic - Plan a trip to the Pamir mountain ranges without a visa for up to 60 days.

Macau - A trip of less than 30 days means you can visit Macau without a visa.

Mongolia - Staying in Mongolia for less than 30 days? No need for a visa.

Philippines - Same goes for the beach paradise of the Philippines , make the most of visa-free travel for up to 30 days. 

South Korea - Aussies travelling to South Korea don’t need to apply for a K-ETA thanks to a 90-day maximum of visa-free travel.

Taiwan - Taiwan has restored the visa-exempt entry scheme for nationals of designated countries, including Australia.

Tajikistan - 30 days should cover everything right? That’s how long Aussies can see everything Tajikistan has to offer without needing a visa.

Thailand - If you’re headed to Thailand for tourism, you can get a visa exemption for up to two months on arrival. 

Uzbekistan - See Uzbekistan visa-free for single-entry stays of up to 30 days.

Albania - You can visit Albania for 90 days without a visa. 

Armenia - There’s no need for a visa for Armenia if you're staying up to 180 days per year.

Bosnia and Herzegovina - Roadtrip the coast of Albania for up to 90 days without a visa. 

Bulgaria - Or, if Bulgaria is more up your alley, visit for up to 90 days sans visa.

Georgia - You can visit Georgia for up to a whopping 12 months without a visa if you have an Australian passport. That’s a whole year of exploring. 

Ireland - Tourist visas of up to 90 days are issued on arrival for Aussies visiting Ireland . You’ll also need at least one blank page in your passport.

The Baltics

If you’re visiting any of the following countries in 2025, you won’t need a visa for stays less than 90 days. 

• North Macedonia

Ukraine - To see Ukraine visa-free, make sure your stay is less than 90 days within 180 days.

UK - Aussies planning to visit the UK won’t need a visa for less than 6 months. This includes England , Scotland , Wales and Northern Ireland.

The Schengen area

Aussies visiting the Schengen zone can travel about for a total of 90 days. When that time is up, you’ll need to leave the area for 180 days, then your 90 days reset. The European Union also just announced that Aussies will need to be pay a 7 euro application fee. The new requirement for visa-exempt travellers will kick in, in the first half of 2025. 

This includes: Austria, Belgium, Croatia , Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark , Estonia, Finland, France , Germany, Greece , Hungary, Iceland , Italy , Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Malta , The Netherlands, Norway , Poland, Portugal , Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain , Sweden and Switzerland .

Cook Islands - Upon arrival, Aussies can get a fee-free visitor visa for the Cook Islands that runs for 31 days. 

Fiji - Aussie favourite Fiji , doesn’t ask visitors for a visa if they’re staying for less than four months. 

French Polynesia - Aussies don’t need tourist visas for French Polynesia visits less than 3 months, but might need to provide proof of their accommodation, outbound flight, travel and health insurance and sufficient funds.

Guam - Australia’s part of the visa waiver program so you can stay in Guam for stays of up to 90 days without one.

New Caledonia - Three months is the most you can do in New Caledonia without a visa. 

New Zealand - It’s easy for Aussies to cross the pond since visa-free travel is on the cards for those visiting New Zealand . 

Niue - You’ve got 30 days to see the pristine beaches of this small island nation, and you don’t need a visa to do it.

Australian visa is one of the most powerful visas to have. An Australian visa not only allows VISA-FREE travel to Australia but also to a handful of countries without requiring any additional visas. As of 2024, there are 17 countries you can visit with Australian visa or PR. 

That said, using an Australian visa can be challenging. All Australian visas are electronic visas these days. Immigration officers at the airports may not know how to verify the authenticity of an Australian e-Visa. 

In this guide, I will go over these 17 countries, eligible nationalities, length of stay and the entry rules to keep in mind.

Eligible Australian visas

Depending on the VISA-FREE country, any of the below Australian visas can be used.

• Electronic Travel Authority (Subclass 601)
• eVisitor Visa (Subclass 651)
• Visitor Visa (Subclass 600)
• Work and Holiday Visa (Subclass 462)
• Student Visa (Subclass 500 and 407)
• Family Visa (Subclass 101, 103, 801/820, etc.)
• Work Visa (Subclass 408, 482, etc.)
• Permanent Resident Visa (Family-based or work-based, etc)

Refer to each country below for permitted Australian visas. Some countries require the Australian visa to be multiple-entry and have been used at least once to travel to Australia.

Are Australia e-Visas accepted?

Australia issues only e-visas these days. However, the acceptance of the e-Visa depends on the immigration officer’s and airline staff’s familiarity with the VEVO system. 

The Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO) system is used to verify the authenticity of Australian e-Visas. If they can use the VEVO system to verify your visa, you will have no problems gaining VISA-FREE entry. 

01. Malaysia (Currently suspended)

• Permitted Australian visas: All valid used/unused multiple-entry (or used single-entry) Australia visas
• Permitted Australian PRs: All valid Australian Permanent Resident visas
• Entry granted: 120 hours (5 days)
• Visa is NOT EXEMPT but are eligible to obtain Transit Without Visa (TWOA) at the VOA counter
• TWOA is free of charge, valid for 120 hours (5 days), single-entry only
• TWOA is available at Kuala Lumpur Airport (KLIA1 and KLIA2 terminals) only
• TWOA is available only if flying with Malaysian Airlines, AirAsia or Malindo Air
• Must be in transit to reach Australia as the destination. Must hold a confirmed onward eTicket or original boarding pass to Australia within 120 hours. (Exception for longer-term pass holders such as work visa, student visa, etc. who can depart to any third country)
• Issuing of TWOA is at the discretion of the immigration offices at Kuala Lumpur Airport

• Eligible Nationalities: India passport holders only
• Permitted Australian visas: All valid used/unused multiple-entry Australian visas
• Entry granted: 14 days
• Australian visa or PR must be valid for the entire duration of the stay
• Passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of departure

• Permitted Australian visas: All valid used/unused single/multiple-entry Australian visas, except transit (subclass 771)
• Entry granted: 96 hours (4 days)
• Visa is NOT EXEMPT but are eligible to obtain Visa Free Transit Facility (VFTF) upon arrival
• Must be traveling to or from the country of passport. Example: Must be traveling to a third country from India via Singapore or traveling to India from a third country via Singapore. An example itinerary would be India-Singapore-Bali or Bali-Singapore-India.
• Both arriving and departing flights in Singapore must be on the same itinerary
• Australian visa must be valid for at least 1 month at the time of arrival

• Eligible Nationalities: All nationalities (except these 23 countries – Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Cameron, Cuba, Egypt, Gambia, Ghana, Iran, Iraq, Kosovo, Kyrgyzstan, Myanmar, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Palestine, Senegal, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Syria, Uzbekistan and Yemen)
• Permitted Australian visas: All valid used/unused multiple-entry Australian visas, except transit (subclass 771)
• Entry granted: 30 days
• Must be traveling to/from Australia through South Korea
• Australian e-visa prints are accepted (must be verifiable in VEVO)

• Permitted Australia visas : All valid/expired used/unused multiple or single-entry Australia visas, except transit (subclass 771)
• Permitted Australian PRs: All valid/expired Australian Permanent Resident visas
• Visa is NOT EXEMPT but are eligible to apply for ROC Travel Authorization Certificate online
• ROC Travel Authorization Certificate is free of charge, valid for 90 days, multiple-entry
• If using an EXPIRED Australian visa or PR, it must have expired in the last 10 years only

• Eligible Nationalities: All nationalities
• Permitted Australia visas : All valid Australia RESIDENT visas such as student, work, etc. (Australia tourist visas are not accepted)

• E-Visa fee is 40 USD, valid for 90 days or 180 days, single or multiple-entry
• Must submit proof of residence in Australia such as driver’s license, utility bill, etc.

I f you hold an American passport , you're likely used to traveling internationally with relative ease. Therefore, you may be surprised to learn that many countries require Americans to jump through some hoops to visit in the form of obtaining a visa.

Beginning in January, 13 countries will issue American citizens a visa to visit as tourists. Note this list does not contain information regarding countries that the U.S. Department of State has advised U.S. citizens to refrain from traveling to by issuing Level 4 alerts. It also does not detail destinations that are not currently issuing visas for Americans.

A few months ago, at an African CEO forum in Kigali, Rwanda, Aliko Dangote, notably Africa’s richest man, lamented how difficult it was for him to visit other African countries with his Nigerian passport due to the travel bureaucracies that come with intra-African travels . Aliko commented that he didn’t have time to repeatedly drop his passport at different embassies to obtain visas.

Ironically, next to him sat Patrick Pouyanne, the CEO and chairman of Total Energies, who, with his French passport has visa-free access to more African countries that Nigerian-born Aliko.

This had me thinking, why is a European able to visit more African countries than an African can, and can it be changed? In this article, I delve into the factors that define a ‘strong’ passport, examine the challenges faced by African citizens with ‘weaker’ passports, and highlight the ongoing efforts to improve travel within our own continent.

What determines the strength of a passport?

The Henley Passport Index analyses the most powerful passports by tracking how many countries one can visit without a visa. The following list ranks the top 10 passports by visa-free access, indicating the number of countries their holders can visit without requiring a prior visa.

• France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Singapore, Spain (194 destinations)
• Finland, South Korea, Sweden (193 destinations)
• Austria, Denmark, Ireland, Netherlands (192 destinations)
• Belgium, Luxembourg, Norway, Portugal, United Kingdom (191 destinations)
• Greece, Malta, Switzerland (190 destinations)
• Australia, Czechia, New Zealand, Poland (189 destinations)
• Canada, Hungary, United States (188 destinations)
• Estonia, Lithuania (187 destinations)
• Latvia, Slovakia, Slovenia (186 destinations)
• Iceland (185 destinations)

A quick glance at this list and you may immediately note there are no African states on this list. It is clear while many African states allow visa-free travel into their own countries, the privilege is not being reciprocated.

Looking keenly at the statistics, there is a close link between economic power and mobility. The G7 nations—Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States—collectively account for 44% of global GDP. While G7 citizens enjoy unrestricted travel within the bloc, their passports offer visa-free access to 85% of the world. However, the G7’s openness to visitors is relatively limited, with only 39% of global citizens able to visit without a visa. In contrast, the African Union, representing 3% of global GDP, demonstrates a different dynamic. Although its citizens have less visa-free access overall (28%), the continent is more open to visitors, with 49% of global citizens eligible for visa-free travel to African nations.

Furthermore, in a cruel twist of fate, citizens from developing countries spend hefty sums in an effort to seek visas to travel to these wealthy developed countries. In fact, a dive into the Schengen visa statistics 2023 shows that Schengen generated 1,036,320 million euros from rejected visa applications of Kenyans alone.

What is the impact of this lack of free travel and excessive visas on African citizens?

The lack of free travel and excessive visa requirements significantly impacts African citizens in quite a number of ways. According to a study by Mau et al. (2015) on the Global Mobility Divide, they found out that African citizens had lost mobility rights as of 2010, as compared to 1969 . Even short term visas and visa waiver policies don’t benefit everyone, with countries from Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development ( OECD ) experiencing increased mobility while non-OECD countries lag behind.

On the economic aspect, visa fees and associated expenses can be prohibitively expensive for many Africans, limiting opportunities for business, education, and cultural exchange while the lengthy visa application processes can delay or prevent time-sensitive travel for business or personal emergencies. All these reasons combined result in difficulties in obtaining visas which often results in missed opportunities afforded to citizens from wealthier nations able to travel more freely. This additionally has a psychological impact on Africans, who grapple with the constant barrier to travel, which creates a sense of isolation and second-class global citizenship among Africans.

Do wealthy states deliberately limit travel from Africa?

Some scholars and policymakers have argued that wealthy states deliberately limit travel from Africa due to a complex interplay of factors, including misperceptions about migration, security concerns, and racial bias.

Hein de Haas (2008) challenges the “myth of invasion,” arguing that European countries have tightened visa policies based on exaggerated fears of mass African immigration . Economic protectionism also plays a role, with strict visa policies serving to protect domestic labor markets in wealthy countries (Czaika & Neumayer, 2017). Furthermore, Scheel (2017) found evidence of institutional racism in visa decision-making processes that disadvantage African applicants. These policies contribute to what Mau et al. (2015) term the “Global Mobility Divide,” creating and maintaining global inequalities in mobility. While these arguments persist in academic and policy discussions, they remain contentious, as official policies rarely explicitly acknowledge such motivations. The reality likely involves a complex interplay of these factors, along with bureaucratic inertia, reciprocity in international relations, and genuine (if sometimes misplaced) security concerns.

Regardless of the reasons, the real losers are African citizens.

Is the dream of achieving an integrated African market far-fetched?

Admittedly, as a continent, we have taken steps in trying to promote integration among different corners of the continent. With the advent of colonialism, there was the demarcation of territories and establishment of new boundaries, both physical and bureaucratic, and the progress that had been made in terms of integration among various communities in different parts of the continent was lost. Integration of the continent was required time and efforts across nations. 

One of the most impactful efforts was made as the AfCFTA was launched on March 21, 2018, by 44 countries during the 10th Extraordinary Summit of the African Union (AU) Assembly of Heads of State and Government in Kigali, Rwanda. By April 2024, 54 countries had signed the agreement, with 47 of them having ratified it. Phase 1 of the AfCFTA is currently being operationalised, including the adoption of Protocols on Trade in Goods, Trade in Services, and Dispute Settlement mechanisms, alongside the establishment of oversight committees and the adoption of a work program. Several Protocols under Phase 2—covering Investment, Intellectual Property Rights, Competition Policy, Women and Youth in Trade, and Digital Trade—have also been adopted. While trading under the AfCFTA formally began on January 1, 2021, actual trade under the agreement’s terms started in October 2022 through the Guided Trade Initiative.

While the AfCFTA primarily focuses on trade, its implementation could have significant implications for intra-African mobility and passport strength. As economic integration deepens, there’s potential for streamlined travel policies among member states. This could lead to increased visa-free travel arrangements between African countries, potentially boosting the strength of African passports in the long term. The Africa Visa Openness Index (AVOI), an initiative of the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the African Union Commission (AUC), provides some indicators of the impact on travel. While not directly tied to the AfCFTA, it shows a trend towards increased visa openness in recent years, which could be further accelerated by AfCFTA implementation. However, progress in this area may be gradual and dependent on successful economic integration and political will.

Admittedly, establishing a continent-wide free trade area is a complex task and we must approach this goal by focusing our efforts on getting the eight RECs recognised by the AU to work. Being an East African, I can’t help but get more curious about the impact the AfCFTA will have on the region, one of Africa’s oldest RECs. According to the East African Community Regional Strategy On The Implementation Of The African Continental Free Trade Area Agreement: 2024-2034 adopted by the Sectoral Council on Trade, Industry, Finance and Investment (SCTIFI) on 9th February 2024, there is an acknowledgement that in the short run, the AfCFTA may lead to the region suffering losses, but in the long run it will be beneficial. Increased market access, diversification of economies, and sustained economic growth are anticipated benefits. However, potential challenges include loss of import tariff revenue, heightened competition from established economies within Africa, and resource constraints for implementing the AfCFTA.

For East African passports specifically, the AfCFTA’s impact could be substantial. As the EAC is already one of Africa’s most integrated regions, successful implementation of the AfCFTA could further enhance the mobility of East African citizens. This could manifest as increased visa-free access to other African countries, potentially improving the global ranking of East African passports. However, this progress will likely depend on how effectively the region navigates the initial challenges of AfCFTA implementation and leverages its anticipated long-term benefits.

Passports and Priorities 

Visa-free travel should be a priority when developing trade relations within Africa because it is fundamental to realising the full potential of economic integration. The journey from ancient trade routes to modern passport restrictions reflects a regrettable regression in African mobility. The paradox highlighted at the beginning of this article – where a European business leader has easier access to African countries than an African entrepreneur – calls for a paradigm shift in our travel architecture. Visa-free travel would facilitate the free movement of goods, services, and people, which is essential for the success of initiatives like the AfCFTA. It would reduce transaction costs, encourage cross-border investments, and foster the exchange of ideas and expertise. Moreover, it would strengthen African unity and competitiveness on the global stage. If we prioritise visa-free travel alongside trade agreements, African nations can create a more interconnected, prosperous continent where an African passport opens doors rather than closes them.

Passports, visas and API

If you're looking to make a smooth start to your journey, you need to make sure you have the right documents, such as a valid passport and the relevant visas.

To help, we've summarised some of the key considerations and requirements here, but it's not a full list of all possible requirements around the world. It's your responsibility to ensure you have the right documents to be allowed to travel.

Passports and ID cards

To travel on an international flight your passport must:

• Be valid for the required time after your planned return date . This is often at least three or six months after the day you plan to leave your destination. Check the Expiry Date on your passport.
• Meet the specific passport validity requirements for your destination. Check the IATA Travel Centre for more information.
• Be signed by its owner. Please ensure each passport is signed with the owner's signature . You may be denied entry or fined in some countries for travelling with an unsigned passport. More information is available for UK passport holders at HM Passport Office .

If you are not an EU national and wish to travel on an international flight to an EU member state (except Ireland) or any of the following Schengen zones — Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, or Vatican City — your passport must:

• Have been issued less than 10 years before the date you enter the country . Check the Date of Issue on your passport and see the UK Government advice for further information.

If you are not an EU national and wish to travel on an international flight to anywhere other than an EU member state (excluding Ireland) or one of the Schengen zones listed above , your passport must meet the entry requirements of the destination country. Please check the UK Government advice for entry requirements for specific countries.

Children's passports

Children need their own passports to travel internationally, including infants under two. Infant and children's passports are only valid for five years, so please check the expiry date before departure.

EU, EEA or Swiss national ID cards

These are are no longer accepted as valid documentation for entering the UK, unless you’re exempt. Please check the latest UK Government advice for more details.

Please note, it’s your responsibility to ensure you have valid documentation when you travel. If you fail to comply with these requirements, you may not be allowed to travel, or you may be refused entry at your destination and have to pay associated costs.

You do not require a passport to travel within the UK, but you will need to carry one type of photographic ID when travelling with us. Examples include:

• Valid passport
• Valid driving licence, either provisional or full
• Valid EU national identity card
• Valid armed forces identity card
• Valid police warrant card or badge

Children under the age of 16 do not need to show identification when travelling on domestic flights. The adult they are travelling with must travel with photographic identification and be able to confirm their identity.

Children aged 14 and 15 years who are flying alone will need to show identification when travelling on domestic flights. Find more information on the requirements for young flyers travelling alone, including a copy of our consent form.

If you are a citizen of the UK, Republic of Ireland, Channel Islands or Isle of Man and were born in these areas, you do not need a passport to travel between these destinations, but you do require some form of photographic identification, such as a driving licence.

All other travellers require a valid passport to travel between these destinations.

Processing times for passports vary but it may take six weeks or longer to receive a passport after applying, so we advise that you wait until your passport has arrived before making a booking. Many countries offer fast-track applications where required.

If you need a passport or need to renew an existing one you can apply directly to your nation’s passport office. In the UK, that’s the UK passport service .

If there is a place on your passport for you to sign, please sign your passport with your signature. Your passport is not valid until it is signed . For British passports, you can learn more from HM Passport Office .

How to check if you need a visa

Depending on your nationality and the purpose of your journey, you may need a visa, or an equivalent form of authorisation, for every country you enter as part of your journey — even if you are only in transit or connecting from one flight to another in the airport of that country without going through border control — known as a transit visa.

This is in addition to a valid passport.

There are several ways you can check if you need a visa:

Check if you need a visa via the IATA Travel Centre  — it's free to check and also includes passport and health requirements, as well as customs, currency and airport information.

Check if you need a transit visa to connect through the UK  — even if you’re only connecting from one flight to another, you may need a transit visa, such as a Direct Airside Transit (DATV) visa or a Visitor in Transit visa, to connect through the UK.

Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)

An ETA will soon be required for people travelling to the UK who do not need a visa, including children and babies. It will be electronically linked to your passport and will give you permission:

To visit the UK for up to 6 months for tourism, visiting family and friends, business or to study.

To visit the UK for up to 3 months on the Creative Worker visa concession .

To transit through the UK – including if you’re not going through the UK border control.

An ETA will be required from 15 November 2023 when travelling from certain countries, with more being added to the scheme over time. Please check if you require an ETA .

Entry requirements and other travel documents

If you're a citizen of a country covered by the Visa Waiver Programme (such as the UK) you are able to travel to the USA with an Electronic System Travel Authorisation (ESTA) instead of a visa.

Make sure you apply for your ESTA at least 72 hours before your departure. You may not be allowed to travel if you arrive at the airport without an ESTA.

You will need a valid e-Passport to use ESTA. These have a microchip symbol on their front cover. ESTAs are valid for multiple journeys for up to two years or until your passport expires, whichever is sooner.

When you need a visa

You will need to apply for a visa to travel to the United States and should contact your local US Embassy in the following circumstances:

• If you are a citizen of a country not covered by the Visa Waiver Programme.
• If you have dual nationality with one passport being issued by a country eligible under the Visa Waiver Programme and the other issued by Iran, Iraq, Sudan or Syria.
• If you have an ESTA and have visited Iran, Iraq, Sudan or Syria since 1 March 2011.

If you are travelling to India, you may be able to obtain an eTourist Visa online, just four days before you travel. The visa will be valid for 60 days and you will need to present a printed copy when you check in to be able to travel.

If you are a pilgrim

If you are a Hajj or Umrah pilgrim, you must enter KSA through Jeddah with a valid Hajj or Umrah visa. Travel must be between the official pilgrimage travel dates.

You cannot:

• travel for Hajj using an Umrah visa
• travel for Umrah using a Hajj visa
• enter, transfer or transit through Riyadh
• travel outside of the official pilgrimage dates determined by the Saudi authorities each year

If you are travelling from the UK, we recommend to book through our specialist partner Masterfare who can arrange your flight and Hajj/Umrah visa through a KSA Ministry of Hajj approved agent.

If you are travelling from another country, or you book on ba.com, it is your responsibility to ensure you get the correct pilgrimage visa from a KSA Ministry of Hajj-approved Hajj or Umrah agent.

If you do not have the correct documentation, or have booked to travel outside the official pilgrimage dates, you will not be allowed to travel or be able to get a refund.

Non-pilgrim visitors

If you are not Muslim, you can enter Jeddah or Riyadh at any time using a business or visit visa.

If you are Muslim, are using a business or visit visa during Hajj, or are travelling in the 6-week period up to and including Hajj, you must enter KSA through Riyadh.

If you are Muslim with a business or visit visa, you will need a Hajj visa to travel during the official pilgramage travel dates.

These restrictions do not apply to residents or citizens of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

KSA visa restrictions change at short notice. Please check the IATA Travel Centre before you book.

Some countries' immigration departments require additional documentation for all children under 18 years travelling into, out of or transiting their country. This varies depending on the country so please check before you travel on the IATA Travel Centre. Just make sure you use the date of birth of your child to receive the correct information.

If you need a visa for your journey, you can apply directly with the embassy or high commission of the country you want to travel to — visit their website or local consulate to learn more about the process.

Advance Passenger Information (API)

Many countries require us to collect some passport and travel information about who's flying into their country. The information you provide is sent securely to the necessary government authorities.

You will need to supply some or all of the following details:

• your full name (as it appears on your passport)
• your date of birth
• your gender
• your nationality
• your passport number
• your passport expiry date
• the country that issued your passport
• your country of residence.

Additionally, when travelling to the US, you will need to provide:

• the destination address of your first night’s stay
• Alien Registration Number (Green Card) for those who have US residency
• Traveler Redress Number if you have one (this enables travellers who have experienced problems entering the US to avoid future difficulties).

If you're a US citizen and have a 'Global Entry' number, you don't need to provide this as part of your API. When you arrive in the US your Global Entry status will be recognised when you use the dedicated Immigration kiosk.

Some governments require us to provide them with information from flight bookings, which will contain additional passenger details to those listed above.

Legal statement for US flights

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) of the US Department of Homeland Security requires us to collect information from you for purposes of watch list screening, under the authority of 49 U.S.C. section 114, and the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004. Providing this information is voluntary; however, if you don't provide it, you may be subject to additional screening or denied transport or authorisation to enter the post-security area. TSA may share information you provide with law enforcement or intelligence agencies or others under its published system of records notice. Travel Schemes

If you are a national of one of the below countries you can join the 'Registered Traveller' scheme and enjoy faster entry to the UK, as long as you have a biometric passport.

When you apply, the UK Border Force carries out checks to see if you are eligible to join. If accepted, you won't need to fill out a landing card for the UK. You'll be able to enter the UK at the ePassport gates or the UK/EU lanes at several UK airports, including all London airports, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Manchester.

UK citizens can get through US passport control faster by joining Global Entry, the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) programme. The scheme allows expedited clearance for pre-approved, low-risk travellers arriving in the United States. Benefits include:

• no processing queues
• no requirement to complete a paper customs declaration form
• reduced waiting times
• TSA Pre✓® Eligibility (faster, more efficient security screening at participating US airports).

Membership lasts for five years and the application process includes background checks (at a non-refundable cost of £42 payable to the UK government), online enrolment with the US Customs and Border Protection Agency (at a non-refundable cost of USD100) and attendance at a face to face interview at an official enrolment centre.
