Where can I ride an ATV near West Yellowstone?

Railroad Right-of-Way Trail Following an old railroad bed, this is a fun easy ATV trail with fantastic views of the area.

• Length: Just under 38 miles one way with options for shorter trips if you stop at Island Park.
• Difficulty: Easy.
• Directions: This trail begins at Warm River Campground (just 10 miles northeast of Ashton along the Mesa Falls Scenic Byway) and ends at Reas Pass (8 miles southwest of West Yellowstone at the end of South Fork Road).
• Maps: Pick up a map at a local Caribou-Targhee National Forest office in either Ashton or Island Park.

Lionshead It's incredibly scenic, popular, steep, and easy to access. This is a local's favorite.

• Length: 16 miles
• Difficulty: Easy to Difficult (the last section to the top of the mountain is very steep).
• Directions: From West Yellowstone, head east along Hwy 20 for about 7 miles. Turn onto Denny Creek Road and follow it 1.5 miles to the trailhead.
• Maps: Beartooth Publishing makes a very detailed Recreation Map for Purchase .

Two Top Mountain From the east side of Targhee Pass, this stunning trail heads south and offers views in all directions.

• Length: 30 mile loop
• Difficulty: Moderate
• Directions: This loop begins in Montana and quickly crosses the Idaho border. Follow directions to Lionshead above but head south from the highway instead of north. The trail will meet up with the Two Top Loop Trail in a few miles.
• Maps: Pick up a map at a local Caribou-Targhee National Forest office in either Ashton or Island Park or the Gallatin National Forest office in West Yellowstone.

Do I need a permit or license?

OHVs must be properly registered in the resident's home state. Non-registered OHVs may be operated with a permit. Check Idaho and Montana regulations before you ride.

West Yellowstone ATV Information

Many of the snowmobile trails that make West Yellowstone famous in the winter months serve as ATV trails in the summer months. Lionhead Loop, Two Top Loop, South Plateau and Big Springs trails are some of the more popular ATV Trails in West Yellowstone. Yellowstone Adventures and Yellowstone ATV have rentals available for visitors to enjoy while in the area.

Cooke City ATV Information

Cooke City offers a variety of ATV trails as well. Grab your fishing pole and fishing license and hit up some of Cooke City’s unforgettable spots. ATV rentals are available locally and registration decals can be purchased locally at the Exxon gas station in town. Check out Bearclaw Bakery & Four Wheeler Rentals and Cooke City Motor Sports for the only ATV and UTV rentals in the area.

Bozeman ATV Information

Summit ATR and Big Boys Toys offer rentals to visitors in the Bozeman area. Both locations can get you set up with trail maps for your 4x4 experience. Olsen Creek is a popular destination for ATVs and offers 24 miles of trails with scenic vistas of the Bridger and Crazy Mountain ranges. For those wanting to ride and spend the night, check out the Little Bear Cabin Area located 25 miles south of Bozeman.

Big Sky ATV Information

Canyon Adventures offers ATV rentals in the summer and can get you set up to hit the trails near Storm Castle in Gallatin Canyon north of the area and Buck Creek located south of town.

The same trail system that made West Yellowstone famous for snowmobiling is available for ATV and UTV use in the summer. Many trails are limited to machines under 50 inches, so make sure to inquire before heading out in your OHV or side-by-side.

Managed by the U.S. Forest Service, the trail system is well marked with excellent, maintained trails, and free trail maps are available. Local trail favorites include Two Top Mountain and Lionhead, where scenic vistas overlook Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming.

This trail system links into Island Park, Idaho’s extensive trails, including a route along the old railroad bed that passes Big Springs and an old cattle stop. ATV rentals are available in West Yellowstone, Montana.

Note: ATV riding is not permitted in Yellowstone National Park.
