Artists Are Canceling Arena Tours Right and Left. Maybe They Shouldn’t Have Been Playing Arenas in the First Place

This is an edition of the newsletter Pulling Weeds With Chris Black, in which the columnist weighs in on hot topics in culture. Sign up here to get it in your inbox every Thursday.

Last week, the Black Keys, a band best known for soundtracking car commercials and occasionally fistfighting fellow Nashville resident Jack White, canceled the entire North American leg of a scheduled arena tour without explanation. Why would a band without a major hit in years think it can sell out arenas in tertiary markets? No one can be sure, but the touring business is in trouble, and part of the reason is ego.

Going on tour used to be a non-negotiable part of a life in music—a way to interact with fans, make money, and see the world. But nowadays, artists either want to play arenas or stadiums or do a residency, playing multiple nights in one city at the same venue, à la Harry Styles and Adele. Every week, another artist goes viral on Twitter for low ticket sales, with a screengrab of a Ticketmaster seat map awash in blue. I will be at the Charli XCX and Troye Sivan show in New York City at Madison Square Garden, but can that duo sell as many tickets in Tacoma on a weeknight? Kim Petras, an artist with hits, had such an awful time with arenas that she resorted to Groupon. And legacy artists aren’t necessarily faring better; for every Justin Timberlake, who just added nine dates to his Forget Tomorrow world tour, there’s a Jennifer Lopez, who recently cut her upcoming summer greatest-hits tour short by seven dates , reportedly due to soft ticket sales.

The Taylor Swifts of the world are still making money on the road, and artists from Wednesday and Waxahatchee to Chappel Roan and Joanna Newsom are selling out shows at great venues. But big arena tours have historically been sustained by early ticket sales, and that part of the market appears to be collapsing. The Twitter account @UnderFaceValue tracks price drops and undersold shows and “other peculiarities across the ticketing ecosystem”; its mantra, because soft sales translate into crazy 11th-hour price breaks, is #PaysToWait. If you’d waited for the right moment, you could have seen the Rolling Stones in Seattle for $29, 21 Savage in Chicago for $19, or George Strait and Chris Stapleton in Indianapolis for $13.

These challenges hit close to home for me. My cohost Jason Stewart and I take our podcast, How Long Gone, on the road. We experienced a high point in Philadelphia at Johnny Brenda’s, a cozy spot in Fishtown with a rich history. The show was a sellout, the crowd was fantastic. The next time we visited, we stepped up to a bigger venue, World Cafe Live. The turnout was decent, but it didn’t reach the same level of energy, and the experience felt different. We're heading back to Philadelphia in June, and we've decided to return to Johnny Brenda’s . It's a lesson learned: Better to have a packed house in an intimate setting than a half-empty room in a larger venue. The ego bruise was temporary, but the lesson was invaluable.

So, who do we blame? Is this the fault of corporate mega-promoters like LiveNation (which produced the Black Keys’ tour) booking artists into the biggest venues possible, then jacking the price of everything from tickets to parking to concessions, all regardless of what the market will bear, while tightening their grip on the marketplace to the point that the Department of Justice is preparing to sue them in federal court for antitrust violations ? Is it agents and managers gassing up the artist? Is it just the artist's desire to sell out these giant venues? Maybe all of the above.

If you’re going out on the road and you’re big enough to even consider booking an arena show, why not do three nights in a prestigious venue like Radio City Music Hall or the Beacon Theatre instead? It provides fans with a more intimate experience, and every night will feel full. The Black Keys eventually released a statement . They didn’t blame anyone. They didn’t whine about how hard touring is. They just said they were recalibrating after a successful European run playing venues like Brixton Academy in London and the Zenith in Paris. It was the right approach. We all know it was ticket sales, but no artist should be ashamed of taking your lumps, switching things up, and selling tickets.

Big streaming numbers look great online but don’t necessarily translate to ticket sales. A touring business has to be built, returning to the same cities every year. A career cannot rely solely on the algorithm. Being great live will get people through the door and keep them coming back. These offline collective experiences are few and far between these days; buying tickets and going to shows is essential and valuable. They just don’t all need to be in arenas.

Jennifer Lopez cancels This Is Me…Now The Tour, including Acrisure Arena stop

arena tours kontakt

Singer Jennifer Lopez announced Friday that she is canceling her upcoming tour, This Is Me…Now The Tour, which was scheduled to make a stop at Acrisure Arena on July 19.

The reason for the cancellation, according to the "Jenny From the Block" singer, is so she can take "time off to be with her children, family and close friends."

“I am completely heartsick and devastated about letting you down. Please know that I wouldn’t do this if I didn’t feel that it was absolutely necessary," Lopez wrote on her website. "I promise I will make it up to you and we will all be together again. I love you all so much. Until next time…"

The move comes after reports of low ticket sales for the tour, leading Lopez to cancel a number of shows in recent months.

The This Is Me…Now tour was meant to follow Lopez's new album, "This Is Me...Now," for which she also released the Amazon Prime Video documentary "This Is Me…Now: A Love Story." The album features themes of love and her reunion with actor Ben Affleck, who she married in 2022. It's also her first new record in a decade since "A.K.A." in 2014.

How to get a refund for your Jennifer Lopez tour ticket

Those who purchased tickets through Ticketmaster will automatically receive refunds. The refund will be processed to the original method of payment used at time of purchase, once funds are received from the event organizer, which is usually completed within 30 days.

Those who purchased via third-party resale sites, such as SeatGeek, StubHub or VividSeats, will need to reach out to their point of purchase for more details.

Other shows canceled at Acrisure Arena recently

Lopez is the latest Acrisure Arena show to be canceled.

Rock duo The Black Keys also canceled its 31-show International Players Tour, which was slated to have a Palm Desert concert on Sept. 28. The tour is no longer mentioned on the band’s website and Ticketmaster also lists the other dates as canceled. The only upcoming show listed on the band's website is a July 6 performance during NASCAR’s Chicago street race that was not announced as part of the tour.

Previous reporting from staff reporters Brian Blueskye and Paul Albani-Burgio was used for this story.

Jennifer Lopez cancels tour, citing time with family amid low sales and divorce rumors

Jennifer Lopez  has abruptly pulled the plug on her “This is Me… Now” summer arena tour, which was set to bring her latest album and other hits to nearly 30 cities throughout the U.S. and Canada.

Live Nation cited Lopez “taking time off to be with her children, family and close friends" as the reason for the tour’s cancellation. On her website , the 2-time Grammy nominee told fans that she was “completely heartsick and devastated” amid the cancellation. Some fans have pointed out that the tour, originally slated to go from late June to August, had already undergone some dramatic changes as ticket sales stalled.

The final six dates of the tour were canceled in March, reportedly due to low ticket sales. Meanwhile, remaining dates were being advertised as “greatest hits” shows rather than part of the album tour. A significant portion of tickets on every stop were still available before the tour’s cancellation, raising questions on whether slumping sales played a bigger role than she's letting on.

Ticket sales on the “This is Me… Now” tour reportedly met a similar fate to the album sharing the same name, which debuted at number 38 on the Billboard album charts before falling off the top 200 entirely weeks later.

Low sales also struck the rock band The Black Keys. The Ohio act canceled their own arena tour and opted to downsize to more “intimate” venues earlier in the week after tickets, which reportedly ranged from $100 to $300, failed to move.

Speculations on the health of the "Let's Get Loud" singer’s marriage to actor Ben Affleck have swirled online as the pair have been reportedly separated for a number of weeks. On a recent stop on the promotional tour for her movie “Atlas,” which took the number one place on Netflix, she and her co-star Simu Liu shot down a reporter who asked about the rumors.

“OK, we’re not doing that,” Liu said.

Lopez fans will be automatically issued a refund if they purchased a ticket through Ticketmaster, Live Nation said.

She continued: “I promise I will make it up to you and we will all be together again. I love you all so much. Until next time…”

“This Is Me... Now” was released early this year, 20 years after her hit album, “This Is Me... Then.” Lopez told the AP that the new album was a “miracle,” and “a second chance. And I’d love to capture this moment in time the way that album captured that moment in time.”

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

arena tours kontakt

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

arena tours kontakt

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

arena tours kontakt

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

arena tours kontakt

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
