"apart from that am thinking we shall just wander the cafes and parks and soak up the atmosphere. Is this not enough of a plan?"

It's your trip. If it's 'enough of a plan' for you, it's fine. (You might have some contingencies in mind in case of rain or boredom.)

I agree with SF Susan that the Luxembourg Gardens are wonderful. I believe it’s €6 to rent the little sailboats.

Pirate 🏴‍☠️

I can guarantee a 13 year old is going to be bored 'wandering around parks and cafes'. The challenge is that a two year old makes it hard to plan things a 13 year old would enjoy.

Maybe do Jardin Acclimatation one day which is good for the 2 year old and perhaps if the 13 year old enjoys caring for the sibling would be okay for that kid. Then for the older child consider Eternelle Notre Dame virtual reality experience. If there are two parents, one could go with the older kid -- it is more fun with a partner -- but if only one parent, let the 13 year old do it on their own. There is also a good 'fly over Paris' virtual reality experience which is shorter near Opera that the 13 year old would probably enjoy. Parent could get a snack with the toddler nearby while the older kid enjoys the experience.

I strongly agree that the location is terrible and if possible I would get a place near the Tuilleries or Luxembourg Gardens which is full of good things for a toddler and the older child would probably enjoy renting a sailboat for the fountain pool. It was 5 Euro last time I did it but someone upthread indicates it is 6 now.

When you walk on the right bank in the center of Paris there are lots of cafes and also some climbing toys on the walls that the older child might have fun with. There are playgrounds all over Paris perfect for the toddler.

You can rent row boats in both the Bois de Bologne and Parc Vincennes (use the Port Doree metro stop to access Parc Vincennes near the lake). Parc Vincennes also has a medieval castle that makes for a very nice visit that lots of kids find fascinating -- and both kids could do this with you. The castle is at the Vincennes stop on the metro. But if it is a nice day I would take a picnic to the Port Doree stop and rent a boat and then make my way to the castle.

If the 13 year old has a phone with a camera or a camera encourage them to make a photo journal of the trip so they have something to do that is focused.

FWIW. a foolproof activity of ours for kids of any age, was simply letting them choose a fancy pastry from a bakery every afternoon which we either took as a snack in a nearby park or saved for dessert after dinner.

25 Most Famous Paris Monuments – How Many Do You Know?

F rance’s iconic capital city is filled with fantastic monuments. Many monuments in Paris are known all over the world like the Eiffel Tower and the Arc De Triomphe. However, some are less well-known.

Here is my list of the 25 Paris Monuments you absolutely must-see when visiting Paris – a mix of the most famous and those that should be.

Things to Book in Paris Before You Leave Home

Few things are more frustrating on vacation than missing out on that amazing hotel or tour because it is sold out. Here are my top things to book in Paris before your vacation.

🗼 Most Popular Attractions in Paris:

1. Eiffel Tower Skip the Line Entry – you can’t miss this when you go to Paris

2. Louvre Museum Timed Entry Ticket – queues for this iconic museum can go for days

3. River Seine 1 Hour Cruise – see Paris from the water

4. Arc de Triomphe Rootop Tickets – try and get it for sunset

5. Versailles Palace Day Trip from Paris – the number one Paris day trip

🛏️ Where to Stay in Paris:

1. Hotel La Bourdonnais – 5 min walk from the Eiffel Tower, 7th Arrondissement

2. Hotel Raphael – Most beautiful rooftop in Paris, with Eiffel Tower views

3. Les Jardins de Montmartre Hotel – great value, 10 min walk to Sacre Coeur

25 Paris Monuments

1. the eiffel tower.

Kicking off the top Paris landmarks list is undeniably the most famous monument in Paris France and by far, the most photographed, the Eiffel Tower. Standing in sheer wonder, the incredible edifice in Champ de Mars’s center is the tallest structure in Paris. It stands 324 meters (1,063 ft) tall.

Built between 1887 and 1889 by French engineer Gustave Eiffel, the Eiffel Tower is made of iron rather than steel. It was built to be one of the main attractions at the Paris World’s Fair in 1889.

Parisians quickly fell in love with The Eiffel Tower and more than 2 million visited in the first year that it was open. The tower symbolised French know-how and industrial genius.

Today nearly seven million people visit The Eiffel Tower every year. The top of the Eiffel Tower, which can be visited, is at 276 meters. The other key viewpoint is on what is called the second floor which is at 116 metres.

I highly suggest you take an Eiffel Tower summit tour and climb to the very top; there, you’ll be welcomed with panoramic views of the capital. Though the tower is impressive at any time, it becomes magical at night as its lights twinkle and oozes with romance.

Ticket prices vary depending on how high you want to go and how you want to get there – stairs or lift. It is possible to take a lift all the way to the top (with the option to stop at the second floor) or to walk up to the second floor and then get a lift to the top.

July and August are the busiest times of year to visit The Eiffel Tower but it is usually quite busy all year round. It is possible to book tickets two months in advance of your visit. I would highly recommend booking a skip the queue ticket for the Eiffel Tower ahead of your visit to Paris.

Psst…Though its incredible structure is one to boot, tons of other magnificent landmarks in Europe are also must-sees.

2. Pere-Lachaise Cemetery

Whilst Paris is home to many cemeteries, Pere-Lachaise is the most famous. It holds the strange honor of being a beautiful cemetery and a lovely place to visit. It is also home to many famous characters from Oscar Wilde to Jim Morrison.

This 44 hectare cemetery is in the 20th arrondissement and more than three million people visit it every year.

3. Le Louvre

When you’re in Paris, you’ll certainly not want to miss attending the most visited museum in the world: The Louvre Museum. It first opened in 1793 with an exhibition of 537 paintings, and today, it houses around 38,000 historical objects.

This iconic structure is the world’s largest art museum and is famously known for housing Mona Lisa. The original of this famous painting hangs in the Louvre today and has been since 1804.

Apart from Leonardo Da Vinci’s jaw-dropping painting, you’ll find plenty of other interesting antiques in this mega museum and symbol of Paris.

From Oriental, Egyptian, Roman & Etruscan antiques to the Greek antique section. Aside from antiques and famous paintings, the museum also houses impressive sculptures like the ‘Venus de Milo’.

IM Pei’s iconic glass pyramid was completed in 1989, adding another element to this Parisian landmark.

The Louvre Museum receives over 15,000 visitors per day, so I highly suggest booking a skip the line tour to get your spot in this iconic space. Tickets purchased online ahead of time are slightly more expensive than those purchased at the museum. However, you will be given a timed entry ticket and will not have to queue, which I think is worth the extra.

In 2019, the Louvre was the most visited museum in the world, receiving over 9.6 million guests.

4. La Conciergerie

Located next to Saint Chapelle in the first arrondissement, the Conciergerie was part of the former royal palace rebuilt under Philip IV in the 14th century. Only the Guards Room, the Hall of the Soldier and the kitchens are left of the palace.

The Conciergerie was then used as a prison during the French Revolution and Marie Antoinette spent her last days there. Today it is possible to visit La Conciergerie and take a fascinating tour.

5. Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris

The Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris was initially erected in the 14th-century to honour the Virgin Mary. The French Gothic cathedral is located in the heart of Paris on Île de la Cité island in the middle of the Seine and is considered one of the most famous and beautiful in the world.

Notre Dame’s full name is Notre Dame de Paris. This means Our Lady of Paris.

With its grand facade and equally awe-inspiring interior, Notre Dame was certainly built to impress. From its noble church bells, marvelous sculptures, bell tower, and stained glass windows to one of the world’s largest music organs.

Notre Dame was damaged during the French Revolution in the 1790s. But it was Victor Hugo’s novel The Hunchback of Notre Dame that really drove interest in the cathedral.

In April of 2019, Notre Dame caught fire whilst it was being restored. Severe damage was done but restoration plans began quickly. The aim is for Notre Dame to be restored to its glory for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to visit the inside of Notre Dame Cathedral during this restoration work. However, it is of course possible to come and see this stunning building.

6. The Seine River

This is France’s best known river and runs from Dijon to the English Channel via the center of Paris. The Seine borders 10 of the city’s 20 arrondissements and the city of Paris grew around it.

Today half of the water used in Paris comes from the Seine River. Thirty-two bridges cross it in Paris, and it is popular with both locals and tourists. There are many ways to enjoy the Seine – from romantic strolls along its banks to running to taking a cruise.

7. Arc de Triomphe

The Arc de Triomphe sits at the western end of the Champs-Elysee in Place Charles de Gaulle and in the middle of one of the scariest roundabouts in the world.

This famous European landmark is a tribute to those who died fighting for France in the Napoleonic and Revolutionary Wars. The names of all French victories as well as the generals are inscribed on the arc. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier from World War 1 lies underneath the Arc de Triomphe.

The Arc de Triomphe was commissioned in 1806 by Napoleon. However, it was not completed until 1836. By this time Napoleon had been banished to Elba. He could never see the Arc de Triomphe but his remains passed through it on the way to Les Invalides.

Every year the Bastille Day parade on July 14 starts at this triumphal Arch and the Tour de France also finishes here.

8. Pont Neuf

Pont Neuf is the oldest standing bridge over the Seine River in Paris. The first stone of the bridge was laid by Henry III in 1578. However, it wasn’t until 1604 that it was open to traffic, and not until 1607 that Henry IV inaugurated it.

Like most bridges built during that time, it followed Roman precedents. It was constructed as a series of short arch bridges and made using stone. Over the years, it has gone through many repairs and renovations, including a major restoration project that took place from 1994 to 2007.

An equestrian statue of Henri IV stands proudly on the bridge. It was commissioned by his widow, Marie de Médicis, after his assassination. During the French Revolution, the statue was destroyed. However, it was replaced in 1818.

9. Vendome Column

The Vendome or Austerlitz column is located in Place Vendome in the 1st arrondissement. It has a statue of Napoleon dressed as Caesar on its summit and was made from 1,200 enemy canons.

Place Vendome is one of the most luxurious squares in Paris. It was built on the orders of Louis XIV and he wanted it to embody power. Today it is filled with expensive jewellry stores.

10. Pont Alexandre III

Pont Alexandre III is a deck arch bridge that’s widely viewed as the most ornamented and grand bridge in Paris. It crosses over the Seine River and connects the Champs-Élysées quarter with Les Invalides and the Eiffel Tower.

It was named after Tsar Alexander III to celebrate and honour the diplomatic relationship between France and Russia. Although, it was Alexander’s son, Nicholas II, laid the first stone for the bridge in 1896.

Pont Alexandre III was built for the Exposition Universelle of 1900. It features an array of masterful and unique sculptures, including cherubs, nymphs, winged horses, and Art Nouveau lamps. It’s also one of the best spots to watch the sunrise in Paris .

10. Le Centre de Pompidou

Opened in 1977, Le Centre de Pompidou is a modern art museum with over 100,000 works of art. When it opened, its high-tech architecture was very cutting edge. The centre is located in the 4th arrondissement of Paris near Les Halles and it is the largest museum for modern art in Europe.

The building was named after ex-French President Georges Pompidou. The building covers 5 acres and has 7 floors. The design is based on the “open approach” to architecture. Nearly 15,000 tons of steel lattices went into this modern art museum as well as glass facades and metal frames.

The result is a building that almost looks like it is inside out. The pipes, cables, plumbing and all the other “internals” are external and colourful.

In addition to art exhibits, the Centre Pompidou also has a public library, a research centre for acoustics and music and more. And don’t miss the fantastic views of Paris from top of the Pompidou Centre.

The Pompidou Plaza in front of the museum is also known for its street performers and home to other cultural activities.

11. Hotel de Cluny

This medieval residence in the 5th arrondissement is the home of Musee Cluny. Located in the Latin Quarter it is home to the famous tapestry The Lady and The Unicorn and has a lovely garden.

In addition to the National Medieval Art Musuem, Hotel de Cluny also has the ruins of thermal baths from Roman times.

12. Place de La Concorde

Located between the Champs Elysee and the Tuileries Gardens, Place de La Concorde is the largest square in Paris. During the French Revolution, the square was renamed for a time the Place de la Revolution. This was where King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were executed.

Between 1836 and 1840, an Egyptian obelisk that was already 3,300 years old was placed in Place de La Concorde. Around this time, two beautiful fountains were added to the square.

Today, Place de La Concorde is the finish line for the Tour de France and home to the beautiful Hotel Crillon.

13. Sacré-Cœur Basilica In Montmartre

France is home to some of the most exquisite palaces , cathedrals and monuments and the Sacré-Cœur is no exception. Situated on the highest natural point in Paris, giving you sweeping aerial views of the city as it wakes and turns golden.

Climb the stairs up the hill going towards the Sacré-Cœur Basilica. Once you are at the top facing the Basilica, turn to the city. This is one of the best places to watch the sunrise in Paris .

From here you will be able to see the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame and the Arc de Triomphe in the distance. But the most impressive view is the horizon turning pink as the sun rises.

Take the opportunity to explore the Montmartre neighborhood where you will find quaint cafes serving delicious coffee and fresh pastries.

14. Les Invalides

Whilst you may not know the name Les Invalides, many are familiar with its golden dome, which reaches over 107 metres high on the Paris skyline. Hotel Les Invalides was built by Louis XIV as a home for those wounded in battle or homeless water veterans in the 7th arrondissement.

Today, Hotel des Invalides contains three museums: The Army Museum, the Order of the Liberation Museum, and the Relief Map Museum. The Army Museum has a collection of over 500,000 items and is the most important site of military history in France. It is also home to the tomb of Napoleon Bonaparte.

Les Invalides and the Army Museum are open every day all year round apart from major holidays.

15. Memorial des Martyrs de la Deportation

Designed by G.H. Pingusson and constructed on the banks of the Seine opposite Notre Dame in 1962, this Paris monument is a tribute to the 200,000 people sent to Nazi death camps from France during the second world war.

The narrow chamber contains 200,000 crystals with light shining through them. These lights are to represent those who lost their lives. The memorial includes an eternal flame.

16. Paris Opera

This magnificent building was constructed in the 9th arrondissement between 1861 and 1875 during the time of Napoleon III. It was built by Charles Garnier and is often referred to as Opera Garnier or Palais Garnier.

The Opera building has seating for over 2,000 people and features ballet, classical music as well as opera. Today it is the home of the Paris ballet. The official opera company of Paris moved to the Opera Bastille in 1989.

Visitors can tour the Opera building on weekdays throughout the year. Hours vary based on performances. Tickets can be purchased for most of the performances ahead of time online.

Check out my article on how to travel to Paris on your own.

17. Hotel de Ville

Paris’ City Hall is in the 4th arrondissement on a plaza that was once the site of public executions during Medieval times and the French Revolution. The last execution took place in 1830.

In 1871 fire was set to the Hotel de Ville during the Paris commune. After the fire, only a stone shell remained. It took 20 years to rebuild and this is the version of Hotel de Ville we see today.

Hotel de Ville is the official office of the Mayor of Paris and local government. It holds free concerts, exhibitions and even ice skating in the winter.

18. Sainte Chapelle

Sainte Chapelle was built in the 13th century for King Louis IX. It is perhaps most famous for the over 1,000 panels of its magnificent stained glass windows. The windows tell the story of the Bible. This beautiful cathedral also features wall paintings and stunning carvings.

Today, you can visit Saint Chapelle most days of the year or if you’re lucky you could attend a classical music concert.

19. Pantheon

This neo-classical Paris monument was built between 1758 and 1790 and was originally a church. The Pantheon sits at the top of the Sainte-Genevieve Hill in the Latin Quarter.

This mausoleum is home to the bodies of Victor Hugo, Rousseau, Alexandre Duma Voltaire and other famous French figures. It also contains the Foucault pendulum, which once proved that the earth does rotate. The building was inspired by the Rome monument , the Pantheon.

Whilst the Pantheon may not be at the very top of your Paris to-do list, if you have more than say 3 days in Paris I would highly recommend a visit, particularly as the top of the dome has fantastic views of Paris.

Tours of The Pantheon are available throughout the year for a fee. The colonnade area of the dome is open for free to the public between April and October.

20. Palais du Luxembourg

This stunning palace was built in 1607 and was named after the Duke of Piney-Luxembourg. The design was based on Pitti Palace in Florence and the palace features beautiful gardens.

Today, Luxembourg Palace is home to the French Senate and upper house of Parliament as well as the 25 hectare gardens. The gardens are a mix of formal French and wild English styles. There is also an apple orchard, an apiary and more than 100 statues in the gardens.

21. The Sorbonne

The Sorbonne is one of the oldest and most esteemed universities in Europe and the world. Originally founded in 1257 by the Catholic Church, it went on to beecome home to some of France and Europe’s most intelligent and creative minds.

The Sorbonne is located in the Latin Quarter of Paris. Unfortunately, it isn’t possible to visit unless you are a student or staff but the front of this Paris monument can be admired from the outside.

22. Palais Royal

This Renaissance-era palace is in the 1st arrondissement between the Opera Garnier and the Louvre. It was once the residence of Cardinal Richelieu but today is home to upmarket shops, restaurants and a few government offices including the Ministry of Culture.

The gardens of the Palais Royal are lovely and worth a stroll before or after eating and shopping.

23. Musee d’Orsay

This museum of the left bank was originally a railway station built for the Paris World Fair in 1900. It is a stunning building both inside and out. Musee d’Orsay focusses on art from between 1848 and 1914. It is perhaps best known for its Impressionist and Post-impressionist art collections.

The Musee d’Orsay is the fifteenth most visited art museum in the world. Book your entrance ticket online before your visit.

24. Saint-Jacques Tower

The less well-known Saint-Jacques tower in the first arrondissement can be seen from many points in Paris. The tower was once attached to the Saint Jacques de la Boucherie church.

This gothic-style tower is 62 metres high and has been on the right bank of Paris since the 16th century. It is possible to take a guided tour of the tower and climb up to the top for some fantastic views.

25. The Statue of Liberty

This considerably smaller reproduction of the original Statue of Liberty is in the 15th arrondissement on Ile aux Cygnes, the third largest island in Paris. The statue was built in 1889, three years after New York’s Statue of Liberty. It is one-quarter of the size of the New York statue.

Admission to Paris’ Statue of Liberty is free.

Tour Itinerary:

Let’s start our Paris tour in one of the most beautiful squares. Place de la Concorde is the 2 nd largest square in France. All its elements make harmonic and picturesque scene. In the center of the square you will see Egyptian obelisk of Luxor which is almost 3500 years old and was a gift from Egyptian authorities to France. The obelisk is surrounded by two huge fountains made of marble and gold, and decorated with majestic statues.

The most significant buildings here are too luxurious Hotel de Crillon and French Naval Ministry both built in pure classicism style. During French revolution the square was a place for public executions. King Louis XVI, Marie Antoinette, Robespierre were executed here. The square took its name to signalize the end of revolutionary terror in 1795.

Place de la Concorde is the beginning of the legendary Champs Elysees. This Paris avenue beats all records: the most expensive, the most fashionable, the most luxurious, the most elegant and the most famous. Almost 2 km of trendy restaurants, clubs, boutiques of world-known brands, offices of big international companies. Champs Elysees is a symbol of prestigious life. No matter how much money you will spend there – this place will not leave you indifferent. It has unique Parisian charm which you can feel only here.

If you are looking for famous monuments you will find a lot here: Elysees Palace with presidential residence, Grand Palais which is the world cultural center and Petite Palais with a great collection of fine arts.

After walking the most wonderful street it’s time to remember some historical events. Champs Elysees will lead you to the greatest historical monument of Napoleon’s times. A great French Empire Napoleon wanted everybody to remember his victories, that’s how the idea to build the Triumphal Arch appeared in 1806. The monument looks majestic is the largest in the world: 50 m high and 25 m long.

To see amazing city views you need to go up to the top of Arch – we promise you will not regret! Wonderful Paris scenes with the best view of Champs Elysees – sounds tempting, isn’t it?

Trocadero quarter is located on a hill. It’s considered a “very French” area, here you will hear mostly French speech and see many locals. The first must-see place here is Trocadero square with Chaillot Palace built in neoclassicism style. Don’t expect to see a masterpiece of architecture: this Palace is popular due to large observation deck with extremely spectacular views of Eiffel Tower.

Time to take photos with the main French attraction! Taken from this point your photos will be as impressive as postcards. Another place in Trocadero to catch your attention is Trocadero Park with green area of 100 000 sq. m and the huge beautiful fountain. Trocadero is a perfect place to visit before you go closer to the Eiffel Tower.

No doubt that you have been waiting for this moment for a long time! The most exciting moment during any Paris tour. We cross Seine by Pont d’Iene and now we are standing right in front of the Eiffel Tower so we can see it in all its majesty. Breathtaking moment! Built for World Fair 1889, it wasn’t expected to become popular.

Who knew that years later this 320 m tall elegant iron structure would become the most recognizable building in the world! Not to see Eiffel Tower means not to visit Paris. Eiffel Tower should be seen both by day and by night with its fantastic illumination.

And now how about some rest in a lovely green park? After you saw the Eiffel Tower the best place you can go to is Champs de Mars. Located between the Tower and Military school it occupies a territory of 25 ha. What can you do here? Of course admire great views and take pictures with Eiffel Tower.

Local Parisians like to come to Champs de Mars for a picnic. You can enjoy spectacular scenes here at night. Champs de Mars is a hotspot for lots of events including concerts, national celebrations and exhibitions.

Les Invalides is a big complex consisting of many buildings. Founded in 17 th century, it meant to provide accommodation to soldiers who took part in wars and were disabled or poor. At those times House of Invalides could accommodate 4000 guests. Invalides was like “the city inside the city” with its own rules. Nowadays some veterans live here but it also attracts many tourists.

Why it’s so popular? Firstly, it’s a real pleasure to see these baroque buildings with golden ornaments. At night the view is even more impressive. Inside you can see great frescos and paintings. Visitors can come to museums, the most famous here is Museum of Army. And the highlight here is the tomb of Napoleon. Imagine how exciting it is to stay near the tomb of such a great historical person.

During our Paris tour you will see many bridges crossing Seine but this one will take a special place in your heart. Pont Alexandre III was built to honor the union of Russian Empire and France and became a piece of Russia in Paris. It is not just a bridge to cross the river: it is historical monument and a real masterpiece of architecture.

It is 160m long and along all the bridge there are beautiful lanterns lighting the bridge and reflecting at Seine. Pont Alexandre III has a plentiful ornamentation including marble and golden statues of fames, nymphs and winged horses. The best way to explore all details of bridge is to take a boat trip along Seine.

Start you day at the highest point of Paris - Montmartre hill. Climb the stairs instead of funicular to enjoy great city views. For centuries Montmartre has been a synonym of bohemian life, freedom and art. The atmosphere here is highly spellbinding. Montmartre is a favourite place for artists, musicians and other representatives of bohemia. For many years talented people were getting inspiration in this magical place.

Van Gogh, Picasso, Renoir, Degas… the list of famous people lived here is endless. Cozy cafes, flea markets, vintage shops, studios and (of course!) cabarets – you can find everything in Montmartre. Wander through lovely streets, listen to street musicians and take a cup of coffee in a local café – feel like a real Parisian bohemian.

Montmartre hill is 130 m high. And on the highest point the Incredible Sacre Coeur church rises above Paris. Here the whole city is on your fingertips! Built in 1914, it is one of the most significant churches in France. It dazzles with its beauty. The church is made of unique travertine stone which becomes whiter after contact with water.

You will also see many interesting things inside: the largest collection of mosaics in France, amazing stained glass windows, Grand organ and the crypt. Sacre-Coeur is surely a place to see and admire.

One of the most recognizable places in Paris is the intriguing Red Mill of Moulin Rouge cabaret. Opened in 1889, it immediately became popular among people of all classes, professions, nationalities. It’s the birthplace of French Cancan. The shows here are always spectacular so tickets should be booked in advance.

Moulin Rouge is an endless feast and amusement! Near Moulin Rouge you can find a unique mill in Paris – Moulin de la Galette built in 1622. Mouilin Rouge is located in Pigalle area which is known as Paris Red Light district.

National Opera (Palais Garnier)

Built in 1875, Paris Opera became one of the most significant and influential opera theatres in the world. It accommodates 2000 spectators. It is built in Beaux-arts style and standing out by its beauty. If you have enough time in Paris you simply must check out this place.

The majesty of Opera leaves everyone speechless: Grand Foyer, Grand Staircase with marble, gold and numerous paintings and Auditorium made in red and gold colors. Just inside Palais Garnier you can visit trendy Opera restaurant with stylish interior, delicious French cuisine and large terrace with city views.

From Palais Garnier we will walk along fashionable Rue de la Paix which is paradise for shopping lovers. This street leads to Place Vendome. In the center of this square you will see the column with statue of Napoleon in honor to his victories. But this square is famous not for historical events.

Place Vendome is the most elite and luxurious square in Paris. It’s world-known by first-class hotel Ritz where Princess Diana spend her last hours before the car accident in 1997. Many deluxe boutiques are located here. By the way, Place Vendome is the heart of the fashion world and the headquarters of Chanel fashion house.

Tuileries Park is one of the most popular attractions in Paris. The explanation is simple: this place is wonderful! Huge green area with straight alleys – excellent photo-ops everywhere! It’s a real masterpiece of landscape art. Since 16 th century it was a favourite place of kings and queens and nowadays it meets thousands of people every day.

Art-lovers will like the great collection of statues made by such masters as Rodin. There also two big beautiful ponds: the Bassin Octogonal and the Bassin Rond. Wherever you go in Tuiliries a great emotions are guaranteed. A nice addition here are scenic views of Louvre, Place de la Concorde, Tour Eiffel. If you are interested in photography and have enough time you will enjoy visiting Gallery of Jeu de Paume located in Tuileries.

Even if you are not fond of museums it would be a crime to be in Paris without seeing Louvre, the largest museum in the world. The collection of Louvre amazes with its variety – from ancient artifacts to contemporary art. The history of the building began in 1190 when it was founded as a fortress. After being a Royal Palace in 1793 it opened its doors to public. In 20 th century the stylish glass pyramid became an entrance to the museum. Louvre meets millions of tourists every year and keeps about 400 000 exhibits. Great, majestic, a real treasury of art – Louvre is must-see for everyone.

Finish your day in the most wonderful quarter of Paris. Enough words can’t be found to describe this magical place. Being a Jewish neighborhood Marais is multicultural, democratic and at the same time very stylish. Wander through the maze of narrow streets and scenic courtyards, visit numerous workshops and small galleries, taste French or international cuisine in a restaurant and just enjoy your life! Walk to Place des Vosges which is the oldest in Paris. One of notable places here is Ma Bourgogne bistro with typical French cuisine which is considered the best bistro in Paris.

It’s time to visit one of the most significant places from French history – Place de la Bastille. Right here the storming of Bastille prison (the first and the most important event of 1 st French Revolution) took place in 1789. The prison was removed by revolutionaries and nowadays you can only see the perimeter of Bastille paved with stones. In the center of the square the July column with the golden Statue of Liberty on the top is rising. It was built in honor of July revolution of 1830.

Another highlight here is Bastille Opera – a large contemporary construction built in 1989. This opera theatre is less famous than Palais Garnier. However, it is bigger (2700 seats) and has a conception of “opera for people”: more democratic in prices and in dress-code.

After walking along Boulevard Henri IV we will cross Seine by Pont de Sully and find ourselves in one of Seine islands – St Louis. This island is not very popular among tourists which makes it an ideal place to see a real Parisian life. This island was always considered to be aristocratic and elite. Nowadays rich Parisians still prefer to live here. The population of the island counts about 2460 inhabitants.

Picturesque streets, artists, cozy French cafes and quiet sophisticated atmosphere – it’s all about St Louis island. A significant place here is Hotel Lambert which was political salon and home for many famous people such as Balzac, Delacroix, Chopin. Nowadays it’s a private property owned by Prince of Qatar.

If you want to taste the most delicious ice-cream and sorbet – visit legendary Berthillion café which has been producing the best ice-cream for about 100 years.

Can you imagine that a small island of Seine with a little tribe would become home to a megapolis? Cite island is highly popular among tourists because you can see here many significant places. Must-see here is St Chapelle which was built in 1248 and now is an example of great gothic architecture and stained glass art.

Another interesting place is Palace of Justice with Conciergerie – the gloomy castle which for many years has been a prison. Here every detail tells you its history!

There is no person in the world who hasn’t heard about Notre-Dame. Since 1163 it has been one of the symbols of Paris and the most recognizable monuments. Its gothic architecture is really impressive: due to spiritual ornaments it looks like the cathedral it is going to rise above the city. The inside atmosphere is mystical and inspiring at the same time. You will see the Crown of Thorns inside, what makes this place a real treasury. Just in front of the cathedral you can find Point Zero – the place where all the roads in Paris start.

Latin Quarter is one the most atmospheric and unique areas of Paris. A lot of students, universities and schools, bookstores, cafes and bistros for all tastes. Feel like a real Parisian having lunch in Polidor bistro – the oldest cafe in Paris built in 1845.

Simply strolling around Latin Quarter will give you unforgettable feelings! Besides just walking and eating you can find many interesting places here. For example Pantheon were many famous people such as Victor Hugo are buried, Cluny museum with medieval artifacts, amazing St Severin and St Julien le Pauvre gothic churches.

No doubt that the main treasure of Latin Quarter is legendary Sorbonne. Founded in 1215, it is the first university in France. During all the times Sorbonne has been extremely popular among students from all over the world. Nowadays the situation didn’t change: every year it meets thousands of French and foreign students. Contemporary Sorbonne consists of 13 universities located in different parts of Paris.

In Latin Quarter you can see the oldest building – real Sorbonne and its church built in baroque style. You can enter the courtyard of this university and take a look at its everyday life.

Luxembourg gardens are located in the heart on Paris on the left bank of Seine. This fabulous place will amaze you at first sight. Its aesthetic appearance with lots of green plants, beautiful flowers, ponds, baroque fountains and sculptures will not leave anyone indifferent. Luxembourg Palace which is an example of great combination of baroque and renaissance is a must-see here.

A great variety of entertainment for both children and adults including horse riding, driving a toy sailboat in Grand Basin, riding a carousel will brighten up your time. Or you can visit numerous open-air exhibitions and concerts or just enjoy chilling atmosphere of calmness and happiness.

St Germain des Pres has a reputation of the “most French” area in Paris. This quarter is the best place for wandering through lovely streets, shopping and eating. Buy local cheese and wine at a local food market or just relax in one the numerous cafes. One of the most famous places here is Café de Flore which was a meeting point for writers and philosophers in 20 th century.

Many celebrities visit this place, who knows who you can meet there? For history lovers a must-see here is St Germain des Pres Church which is the oldest in France and remains the spirit of many centuries of its history.

A jewel of a 1st-arrondissement hotel

Inside the new 1, Place Vendôme hotel in Paris

That the Scheufele family, longtime owners of Swiss jewellery brand Chopard , know a thing or two about beauty is axiomatic. So the buzz surrounding their small and very smart new Parisian hotel, situated behind the grand blue door of – and across the floors above – the flagship Chopard boutique, is understandable. Called, simply, 1, Place Vendôme, it consists of just five rooms and 10 suites (including one second-floor knockout of an apartment, plus a library and hammam bath), the design a joint effort between Pierre-Yves Rochon and a multigenerational assortment of Scheufeles.

1, Place Vendôme sits above Chopard’s flagship Paris boutique

Each is unique in configuration and choice of colours, textiles and furnishings (think lots of very pretty toile de jouy, marquetry and mouldings, tall windows welcoming in tons of natural light, and a considered array of antiques). It’s a very elegant but discreet deal, with no great see-and-be-seen lobby or buzzing restaurant: rather, a quiet personalised check-in in the salon, food courtesy of an ex-Mandarin Oriental chef, and butler service whenever you want or need it. 1-placevendome.com , from €1,300

An open secret in the Golden Triangle

A bedtroom at the San Régis in Paris’s 8th arrondissement

Of a similarly traditional bent – and of similarly intimate dimensions – is the San Régis, a more than 100-year-old hôtel particulier in the heart of the 8th arrondissement that has for years been a bit of an open-secret destination for that same person who loves the style of a Ritz but might not love the showplace nature of those grande dame hotels’ public spaces.

The Restaurant des Confidences at the San Régis

Like 1, Place Vendôme, its 30 rooms and 12 suites were designed by Pierre-Yves Rochon, along with the various lounges and salons, including a lovely bar encased in white-oak panelling. If a full suite of Technogym equipment and indoor pool are among your requirements, this isn’t your place. What it does have: a Les Clefs d’Or concierge to score opera tickets and restaurant bookings, full room service menus, and four suites with a small but very pretty roof terrace with almost laughably perfect Golden Triangle-Eiffel Tower views. hotel-sanregis.fr , from €500

Le Meurice blooms anew

A deluxe junior suite at Le Meurice on the Rue de Rivoli

Le Meurice, one of two hotels flying the Dorchester Collection flag in the City of Light, is a stalwart address for habitués of Fashion Week, who love it justifiably for many reasons. Among which: its Rue de Rivoli location (across from Tuileries gardens, just down the road from the Louvre); its generous rosé champagne pours, and the old-world charms it glams up with just the right amount of gleaming surfaces, rich textiles and the occasional piece of all-star contemporary design.

Handpainted wallpaper by Lally & Berge in a corridor of Le Meurice

Late last year it introduced a collection of 39 new suites that tie all of that together in super-generous spaces: the designs, by Lyon-based studio Lally & Berge – have been conceived to bring the Tuileries inside, often with beautiful hand-painted wallpapers alongside passementerie and the occasional stained-glass flourish: rose bushes bloom across walls, cushions in shades of hibiscus and peach line the backs of sofas. The bathrooms – sexy as can be – are clad floor to ceiling in dark-veined white marble. The promise: a fresh take that doesn’t abandon the hotel’s heritage. dorchestercollection.com , from €1,900

The old Champs-Élysées’ slick new face

The sofa in one of Hotel Balzac’s bedrooms

Soon to be sitting at quite the far other end of the style spectrum is the Hotel Balzac, which now boasts an anything-but-old mien of sleek new design and some very wow features, among them a Japanese spa and two terrace suites (the chef Pierre Gagnaire, whose eponymous three-Michelin-starred restaurant has been here for 20 years, thankfully remains).

The Balzac’s interiors were designed by Charlotte de Tonnac and Hugo Sauzay of Festen

Bertrand Hospitality, which boutique group includes the Saint Germain favourite of many, Relais Christine, as well as the Norman and the (also new) Château des Fleurs, has enlisted Charlotte de Tonnac and Hugo Sauzay of Festen – as if any further evidence of their primacy among hotel designers were needed. They’ve stripped back the hotel’s 58 rooms and suites and re-dressed them in the signature Festen tones (earthy, warm) and furnishings (favouring 19th-century austere and early 20th-century forms and influences). The bar, clad in burlwood panels with mirrored tables and dangerously (in a good way) dim lighting, feels primed to become a Champs-Élysées place to be. hotelbalzac.paris , from €590
