Antelope Canyon Tours: Which Is Best? (Upper, Lower, X)

Antelope Canyon is arguably the most famous and beautiful slot canyon in the United States.

Located in Arizona on Navajo tribal land, the canyon has a bunch of different sections that are split into separate tours, and visiting any of them requires a local Navajo guide.

The main Antelope Canyon tours are Upper Canyon, Lower Canyon , and X Canyon . They’re all beautiful, but which one is best?

We recently traveled through the little town of Page, Arizona, and tried all of the canyons to see which one would be our favorite.

We started with the Lower Canyon , then did Upper Canyon the next day, and finally ended with Canyon X . It’s hard to believe these are natural formations!

Each of these slot canyons are amazing, with a variety of rainbow colored walls, sunbeams, and beautifully twisting passageways.

However, there are definitely some big differences between each of the canyons, and there are also several companies offering the tours, so finding the right company can be another challenge of visiting Antelope Canyon.

In this travel guide, I’ll compare each of the Antelope Canyon tours (Upper, Lower, and X) in terms of scenery, photography, crowds, fun, access, prices, and availability. Then, I’ll explain which one we liked best overall!

Obviously, one of the main things you may be wondering about is scenery and photography. Which Antelope Canyon is the most beautiful? Which one has the nicest colors? Which one is best for photography? Of course, that’s subjective and a bit hard to answer, because they’re all exceptionally nice.

Upper Antelope Canyon is mainly known for its dramatic light beams, which can be seen in the summer months when the sun is high in the sky. During this time, beams of light shine through the narrow roof of the canyon, illuminating the dust in the air. It’s a spectacular effect that’s great for pictures, although I think it’s a little overrated since it can only be seen in the summer during the middle of the day.

Lower Antelope Canyon has a shallower ‘V’ shaped chamber, which means it lets in more light than the Upper Canyon. Because of this, it’s best seen at times when there’s less ambient light, such as in the morning hours. The Lower Canyon has wonderful colors, and it’s full of twisting passageways and interesting rock features that are great for photos.

Antelope Canyon X has both light and dark chambers, so it’s good in a variety of lighting conditions. Even if some sections are dark when you visit, others will be bright and colorful. Like the Upper and Lower Canyon, the Canyon X has great potential for photography. Since it’s a longer tour, you have more time and opportunities for photos. In fact, I took more pictures in Canyon X than I did in the other two Antelope Canyons combined!

The scenery is a toss-up in my opinion. All three of these slot canyons are very beautiful and great for photos. Upper is best if you want to see sunbeams, otherwise Lower and X are better choices.

So which Antelope Canyon is less crowded? Which one is the least touristy?

Unfortunately, Upper and Lower Antelope Canyon are the losers here. They’ve become victims of their own popularity, and the tourist crowds nowadays are so bad you’ll often find it hard to move around or take photos. Forget about ever retracing your steps for a picture; everyone is shuffled through quickly in a line and this is strictly enforced.

In our experience, the crowds were the worst at the Lower Antelope Canyon , because it’s a bigger chamber and they’re able to run more tours through it every day. More tours also means more people. You’ll be in the middle of a crowd at all times, with people sticking their phones in your face trying to take selfies.

The best one for escaping the crowds is Antelope Canyon X . It’s far less crowded than the Upper and Lower Canyon, and we found it much easier to take pictures without other people in them. The tours here are also a lot less strict and almost have a private vibe to them.

So what about tour duration? How long are the Antelope Canyon tours?

Once again, the Upper Canyon is the big loser here. Although it’s normally advertised as a 1.5 hour tour, much of that time is spent in transit to and from the slot canyon.

In my experience, only about 30 minutes were actually spent inside the Upper Canyon , and it felt even shorter than that because you can never pause or stand still for more than a few seconds. The tour was extremely rushed, and we passed through one of the main chambers so quickly I didn’t even get to take a photo.

In contrast, the tours at the other canyons are longer and more relaxed. This is especially true at Antelope Canyon X , where we spent more than 1 hour inside the slot canyon sections. We were able to walk slowly and take lots of pictures while also chatting with the Navajo guide about some of the history of the canyon. It was a much better experience and we felt like we got more value for our money.

The results speak for themselves. I took hundreds of photos in Lower Antelope and Canyon X, while I only managed to take a handful of photos in Upper Antelope Canyon because I was so rushed and limited on time there.

So which of the canyons is the most fun to explore? I know, this is totally subjective, but it’s still important because the reason most of us are visiting Antelope Canyon is to have fun!

I have to say, my wife and I had the most fun at Lower Antelope Canyon . Our Navajo guide pointed out a bunch of different rock formations with unique shapes, including a dragon, an eagle, and a tribal chief.

The narrow twisting corners were also fun for peekaboo type photos, and although not everyone might agree, we even had fun climbing the stairs and ladders!

So which Antelope Canyon is best in terms of access and safety? Which one is the least strenuous hike? Depending on the tour provider, young kids, pregnant women, and older folks are allowed in any of the canyons, although it may not always be the best idea.

Upper Antelope is probably the winner here. The entrance to the slot canyon is at ground level, so you don’t have to climb any steep stairs or ladders to reach it, and after exiting you just walk across a short slope to get back to the car. It’s very tame. There’s a bumpy 15 minute drive in the back of a pickup truck to get to the canyon entrance, but the truckbed is covered and has benches to sit on, and the drivers don’t go fast. If you can handle that, then you’re good to go.

There’s no bumpy drive like this for Lower Antelope , but getting in and out of the slot is a bit harder since it requires climbing down a steep metal staircase. You still don’t need to be very fit to do it, and pregnant women can do it fine as long as they’re slow and careful. My wife did it in her second trimester and had no issues.

Canyon X is probably the most strenuous in terms of hiking distance and elevation gain, although it still isn’t hard at all for most people. There’s a bumpy 10 or 15 minute van ride in the desert, but you’re in a van with seatbelts. Canyon X also has some walking in the heat, and unfit older folks might have a hard time walking back up the slope at the entrance of the canyon.

So which Antelope Canyon is best in terms of availability? In other words, how easy is it to get a tour on short notice and choose the time and date that you want?

Upper Antelope is the hardest canyon to get a tour, and you may have to book months in advance to get the date and time you want. There are a couple of reasons for this. Since the Upper Canyon is smaller than the Lower Canyon or X Canyon, it fills up easier and they aren’t able to run as many tours per day. It’s also very famous for the sunbeams, which have made it even more sought after by photographers.

Lower Antelope is also highly popular, but it’s a bigger canyon and they can accommodate more tours every day. We booked only one day in advance, and had no problem getting a time that worked for us, although we may have gotten lucky (your experience may vary).

In general, Antelope Canyon X is the easiest canyon to visit. You can usually book a tour at the last minute and still get a spot. Of course, that may change someday as it gets more popular, but for now I’d say it’s a really underrated gem.

So what about cost? Which Antelope Canyon tour has the best prices?

Obviously the tour prices will vary a bit depending on where and when you book them, but in general the most expensive tour is the Upper Antelope Canyon , followed by Lower Antelope and Canyon X , in that order.

Prices for the Upper Antelope Canyon tour can be as high as $150 USD per person during the summer season. In contrast, prices for the Antelope Canyon X tour can be as low as $60 USD, which is well worth it! I consider that a great bargain for what you get to see and do there.

So Which Is Better? (Upper vs Lower vs X)

So which Antelope Canyon is best — Upper, Lower, or X? That’s a good question.

For us, I would have to say the winner for best value (and overall experience) was Antelope Canyon X . While it may lack a few of the features that are great for photography in the Upper and Lower canyons, it’s a longer tour, meaning you have more time to take pictures and get creative.

On top of that, Canyon X is also much less crowded with tourists compared to the others, and you don’t have to worry about being badgered and rushed through the slot, like at Upper Canyon.

Last, but not least, it’s cheaper and easier to get a tour of Antelope Canyon X without booking it months in advance, which is important if you’re going to Arizona without much notice and traveling on a budget.

I have to admit I didn’t really enjoy Upper Antelope Canyon very much compared to the others. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a beautiful slot canyon and the sunbeams were amazing, but the entire tour was so rushed I could hardly enjoy it.

The other problem with the Upper Canyon is that it’s expensive, and I actually left feeling like it was a waste of money. Lower Antelope was definitely a better experience, and it was worth the cost of entry, but it still suffers from the same crowds as the Upper Canyon.

Overall, I think the Antelope Canyon X is a fantastic tour if you’re looking for a beautiful slot canyon without the crowds, cost, and hassle of the main canyons. Enjoy it before it gets too famous!

Best Time To Visit Antelope Canyon (Upper, Lower, X)

The best time to visit Antelope Canyon is generally from the end of March to the beginning of October.

This is especially true for the Upper Antelope Canyon , that way you can see the famous light beams. These are best seen between 10:30 AM and 1:30 PM, on a cloudless summer day when the sun is high in the sky.

For the Lower Canyon , the opposite is true. This canyon gets a lot more ambient light from the sun, so the best time of day to visit it is actually in the morning or late afternoon, when there’s not too much light. However, we went to Lower Canyon in the middle of the day and I have to say most parts of the canyon were still very nice even at that time, so don’t write off a midday visit completely.

For Canyon X , any time of day is good to visit. We went in the afternoon and it was great. The slots have some areas that are deep, and others that are shallow, so it can be beautiful and photogenic in a variety of lighting conditions.

For all of the slot canyons in Arizona , if you want to avoid the crowds, the best time to go is from November to March. However, the lighting and colors won’t be nearly as dramatic or beautiful at this time, so it’s not quite the same experience.

I wouldn’t even bother with the Upper Antelope Canyon at all in the winter months, because it’s just too dim at that time.

More Antelope Canyon Tours

The main Antelope Canyon tours are Upper Canyon, Lower Canyon, and X Canyon. These are the ones normally visited by tourists, and they’re arguably the most beautiful sections of Antelope Canyon.

However, there are also a bunch of other nice slot canyons in the same drainage system:

Mountain Sheep Canyon
Mystical Canyon
Rattlesnake Canyon
Secret Canyon
Waterholes Canyon

Each of these are great slot canyons, and any of them are worth a visit if you have time, especially if you aren’t able to snag a tour for one of the main canyons. Unfortunately, just like Antelope Canyon, these slots are all on Navajo tribal land, so you can’t visit them without a guided tour.

Most people still don’t know about these slot canyons, and they haven’t been discovered by mass tourism yet. As a result, they tend to be the most quiet and underrated parts of Antelope Canyon. Check them out!

If you’re coming from Las Vegas, it’s also possible to do a full day trip to Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend that includes pickup and drop-off from Las Vegas. This is more pricey, and it’s a long day trip, but it could be a good option if you’re in Vegas without your own transportation and still want to see Antelope Canyon.

The celebrated light beams that illuminate the canyon are most likely to be seen during the spring and summer months, making April through September the best (and most popular) time to visit.

You cannot visit Antelope Canyon unless you sign up for an official tour. Only authorized tour companies are permitted onto the site. Spots fill up quickly, so be sure to make your reservations ahead of time. There are no self-guided hikes available within the canyon, and visitors must stay with their tour group at all times.

Great Experience! Tour was recommended by a friend. Purchasing online was really easy. Waiver was also really easy to complete online. Lots of parking. Check-in was quick. Buses were on time. Tour and tour guide was awesome (roughly 90 min). We had Matt as our tour guide. Good storyteller, great demonstration on how the canyons were created, and awesome photographer. Would absolutely recommend!

Wow amazing and breathtaking views of God's wonder. No wonder why so many foreign tourists visit this place. Once you arrive and check in for your scheduled tour, you'll ride in a van, and the driver will drive off-road to the Antelope Canyon site. I would give this 5-stars if the tour consisted of explanations of how this magnificent site was created. It would be nice if there was a speaker system during the van ride, where the guide could explain the history of this land. Don't expect a traditional tour guide. The guy just drove us there, walked us through the canyon, and took our photos in specific locations. They do not offer clean restrooms, only outdoor port-o-potties. Overall, I totally recommend any Antelope Canyon tour. Breathtaking scenery!

We wanted to see Antelope canyon during the trip to Sedona and someone suggested this Canyon X tour for lower cost per person as well as a smaller crowd. It was the best suggestion! It is a long drive from Sedona, so carved out pretty much a full day of possible. 3 hours drive one way. You'll arrive at the check-in area and wait for your group to be called. They drove us about 20 minutes west of the location and our guide was waiting. Our particular group had 15 folks. Nick took us down into the slot canyon and allowed us plenty of time to explore and take photos. He even suggested specific settings on our phones to maximize the colors. There are basically two areas that we went through, but there was plenty to see. Nick also demonstrated perfectly how the area was formed via and, water and wind. So much fun. I have no idea how crowded and rushed the other tours are, but this felt almost leisurely. Combined with the Horseshe Bend visit along the way, it was a good day.

I decided to take this tour since based on the reviews they have smaller groups compared to the Upper/Lower Antelope tours. We had 11 in our group and our guide Tiara was great with guiding us through the canyons and showing the great picture spots plus putting our phones to the right settings. The ride was about 10-15 minutes and the guides do a good job of keeping the groups staggered since there were 4 groups that started when we went but we went to separate spots! Overall recommend and the 90 minute goes by fast!

Great time, our guide Tiara was super friendly and knowledgeable, explaining all aspects of the Canyon and it's importance to the Navajo Nation. The interaction she had with the group was great, the tour it self was really awe inspiring with plenty of time for photo ops. The whole experience from check in to returning to base was very professional and efficient. Would definitely recommend this tour.

Great tour! It was not crowded (had 12 in our tour), the guide Brandon was knowledgable about the best spots for pictures, and even educational with a demo on how these slot canyons formed. It was about half the price of upper and lower antelope canyon, and with our group of 6, that was a big deal! Highly recommend.

A friend and I booked a tour to see Antelope X. I'd read that canyon X was far less crowded than either Upper or Lower Antelope Canyon, not to mention less expensive to visit. I'd visited Lower Antelope Canyon many years earlier and recalled how busy it was. Taadidiin is the only company that provides tours at Antelope X, which is so named because there's an open X made above its entry by how the canyon walls come together. The meeting point for tours is along Hwy 98 some distance past other canyon tours. Signage is good for the turnoff to the parking area. An air-conditioned vehicle took us from the parking area reasonably close to where we met our guide, then we walked together downhill (there are also stairs) to the canyon entry. After the tour, an open vehicle returned us to the parking area. That was a very dusty ride! Our tour guide was Bambi, a spry and well-spoken older Navajo woman. She toured us through 2 separate canyon areas, pointing out shapes and taking photos of each set of people in her group of 12. While there were other groups in the canyons at the same time, there was rarely any crowding. I recommend this tour.

I can not say enough great things about Taadidiin Tours!! So to start, in May we flew to the Grand Canyon for one of the long weekends and very quick trip where we were only going to stop by the Grand Canyon, Antelope Canyon X and horseshoe bend. When my bf had made reservations for Antelope (this is mandatory to visit with a tour) he had been changing tabs between Upper, Lower and Canyon X (all parts of Antelope). We couldn't decide which one to do but after reading reviews etc. We settled on Canyon X, since they all offer similar views but Canyon X is newer and less touristy and also half the price! Well between switching tabs, when he finally hit purchase on Canyon X, the tan had refreshed and instead of choosing the weekend in May, he accidentally bought the ticket for the next morning. I think this was in March or April that we bought the tickets, and obviously we were in GA not AZ so we couldn't make it. We quickly emailed and called them and the next morning they answered and said no problem to move our tickets to May! They were soooo nice even though the cancellation policy says you can't get refunded if you cancel within 24hrs. Fast forward to May: On the way to the Canyon from Vegas, we had a tire blow and ended up stranded on the road for the entire day Saturday. We had landed in Vegas Friday night very late and woke up early to drive and in the morning, 2 hours from Vegas the tire blew on the new Route 66, and we couldn't get any help after spending hours on the phone we finally waited 4 more hours for a tow truck. In the end we spent 10 hours stranded. So we missed our entire day and also missed our time slot at Canyon X. We had 4 tickets at about 50$ each wasted. So we reached out and explained the situation and despite being a no show, they still gave us vouchers for 4 more tickets! They were just so incredible! Now fast forward to last weekend: We pretty much mad a whole trip out of flying back to Vegas just to finally get to go to Antelope! We did 5 days visiting all of the national parks etc in the area all because they were so kind and gave us the opportunity to come back. The tour was incredible!! I wish I could remember our guides name but it was this very sweet lady who took us down into the canyon and explained all about it, gave photo tips and showed us where we could get the best pics, talked about how the canyons formed and how they continue to receive flash flood. She shared a lot about her history and the told the canyons play in Navajo culture as well as more information on Navajo Nation. It was all so interesting and an amazing experience! I HIGHLY recommend booking with them for Canyon X! I think this Canyon is definitely underrated and honestly better than Upper or Lower. The guide told us that Upper is a lot of A frame canyons and lower is V shaped so narrow at the bottom and wide at the top. canyon X actually had a mix so it was great to see both! And the price is unbeatable! Arrive like 10 minutes early, get checked in, then a van will take 15 min to drive you to the canyon, the tour lasts an hour. There are a lot of steps to get into it but they aren't too steep and it's definitely doable but you may be out of breath. After, during the hour long visit, it's all flat! Then you have to climb back up the stairs of course and ride 15 minutes back to the parking lot. So expect to spend about 2 hours in total here. Also pay attention to the time zone! The time changes on your phone constantly in this area because it's on the border so make sure you're in AZ time for your reservation! Bring water but no bags are allowed. The best time for the best lighting is around noonish

This place was amazing!! Our guide Melia was awesome!! She took our pictures and we were able to get the beam of light. This last Monday we took a slot canyon tour with Antelope Canyon X by Taadidiin Tours. We had a fantastic time! The first thing we noticed was that the tour company was very organized. Check-in was smooth, email communications were prompt and provided clear information regarding the tour and its rules. At our start time, we were transported smoothly and efficiently by bus to the canyon. The slot canyons were a phenomenal sight to see. Having traveled from the Midwest we had never experienced anything like them. The walk into and out of the canyon was a bit strenuous even for the "easier" tour, with many steps between us and our destination, but this was clearly stated on the website, so not a surprise. We had Isaiah as a tour guide, and he was phenomenal! He was very knowledgeable about the canyons, and was super personable and willing to answer questions. He pointed out the great natural features within the rocks, and took pictures for groups who asked. He even taught us how to adjust our phone camera settings to get better images! Altogether, we had an amazing experience and would absolutely recommend Canyon X by Taadidiin Tours to anyone who is able to make the journey.

Antelope Canyon X Photography Tour Review

Antelope Canyon X is not nearly as well known as it’s companion slot canyons of Upper and Lower Antelope Canyon. In all honesty, we had originally tried to book either Upper or Lower Antelope Canyon, however, because our trip out west was a last minute trip, every tour for either of these canyons were fully booked. I was initially pretty disappointed, as I have wanted to see a slot canyon for years. The “God Ray” pic (picture with a light ray shining onto the floor of the canyon) is an iconic photo in the photography world, and a picture every photographer wants to get sometime in his lifetime.

I googled other slot canyon tours, and came upon this lesser known tour of Antelope Canyon X by Taadidiin Tours . I googled Antelope Canyon X, but there was minimal information except for some short reviews on TripAdvisor . I was super excited to find out that they still had availability, despite it only being two weeks till we left. They offered two tours, a hiking tour and a photography tour. The hiking tour would be 1-1.5 hours in duration and there would be no bags or tripods allowed. The hiking tour gives you about 10-15 minutes in their two slot canyons, North and South Antelope Canyon. The hiking tour runs continuously throughout the day at 30 minute intervals. The photography tour is 2-3 hours long and each customer is allowed one bag and one tripod. They have two times slots for the photography tour, 10:00AM and 1:00PM which are timed so the sun is in optimal position to get the “God Ray” pic. You also get about 1 hour in each canyon to set up your tripod and take pictures.

The hiking tour was $40.00 for adults, $20.00 for children (8-11) and children 7 and under were free. This price already includes the $8.00 Navajo Hiking fee per person. Other tour groups do not include this fee, and it must be paid upon arrival. This is considerably cheaper than the cost of the Upper and Lower Antelope Canyon tours, where you will be paying 50%-100% more. Also for those that have young children, there is a very limited number of spots available for small children with other tour groups, and some tour groups do not allow children under 6. For Antelope Canyon X we were pleased to learn that as long as there was space available children could go, and there was not a limit on the number of children allowed or age restrictions.

The photography tour was $80.00 for adults which they considered to be age 8 and up. There is no child pricing, however, under 8 years old are completely free. This is SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper than an Upper or Lower Antelope Canyon tour that typically runs a price tag of about $160 or more per person. There were also no restrictions on the type of camera required. Other photo tours required you to bring a DSLR AND A TRIPOD to be allowed on the tour. This was not the case at Antelope Canyon X. I was actually the only one with a tripod and a DSLR on our tour.

In short, Antelope Canyon X was priced about half the cost of the Upper and Lower Antelope Canyon tours, and is significantly more kid friendly.

Given our lack of options, we booked the Antelope Canyon X Photography Tour. We chose it because having small children, being able to bring a bag into the canyon would help tremendously in terms of carrying water and snacks. I also really wanted to have time to take pictures as it has been my dream to get a shot of the “God Rays” and the added time in the canyons along with the ability to bring a tripod is a huge bonus.

So in order to get pictures of the “God Rays” it has to be a sunny day for the sunlight to peer through the small cracks at the top of the slot canyon and produce the sharp ray of sunlight. I had been watching the weather patterns quite closely over the last several weeks, and it had been sunny and 95 degrees ever day for about a month. Well, with our luck, today was an overcast day, and was expected to be overcast throughout the day. Needless to say, I was a little depressed about it.

We arrived about 15 minutes prior to our tour at the main base camp and checked in. There were port-a-potties on site. There was also a small concession area that sold mutton sandwiches, a small amount of candy, and a small variety of beverages.

We arrived at the entrance to the canyon where they had a base camp set up with some basic benches and a cooler with water bottles. The water was not cooled, but it was at least complimentary. Due to the overcast skies, it was actually very comfortable, and did not anticipate needing much water, but it is obvious that with sun, it gets utilized quite heavily. We tried not to drink too much, because as previously stated, there are no bathroom facilities in the actual canyon. There is a port-a-potty at the camp though.

We meet our guide and he goes over some basic guidelines. He explains that we will have AMPLE time to take pictures, and that we can take our time.

We then trekked into Antelope Canyon X. They laid down some grills to help you walk down, as it is pretty steep walk with some very sandy ground that makes traction difficult. It is about a 100 yard walk into the canyon.

At the bottom, you are immediately at the entrance South Antelope canyon, and then it is another 200 yard walk to get to the entrance of the North Antelope Canyon. It started to rain at this point and was getting pretty windy, so we decided to go to the North Antelope Canyon as it has less wind. I was definitely getting antsy as they had previously warned us about the potential for flash flooding.

No better place to be during a rainstorm than at the bottom of a slot canyon. Thankfully the rain only lasted about 20 minutes. We then hiked to North Antelope Canyon.

Our guide did not provide much narration, but I wonder if that could be due to the fact that me and my family were the only English speakers in our group. He was still pretty friendly, and answered any questions I had. He did provide some history of Antelope Canyon X when asked.

We reached the entrance to Antelope Canyon X, and he explained to us that it is 150 ft. long, and that we would be here for about an hour.

We were welcome to walk around, take pics, set up the tripod, and do pretty much whatever we wanted outside of carving our names into the canyon. It was very laid back. The canyon was pretty much empty. About once every 10-15 minutes a tour group would stop in for about 10 minutes to take some pictures and then the canyon would empty out again. I can definitely say that it was very serene, and EXTREMELY easy to take photos. It almost felt like a personal tour of the canyon, as there was little to no crowd. I do wish the canyon was a little longer, but when given the choice of a shorter canyon with no crowd versus a longer canyon with back to back people, I am glad I chose to go with the less crowd option.

The sun started to peek through the clouds a little bit after 30 minutes and our guide decided to head back to South Antelope Canyon. This was so we could see it, take some photos and then head back to North Antelope Canyon so we could hopefully catch the “God Rays” which are only visible in the North Antelope Canyon. He knew I really wanted to get the “God Ray” picture and was really trying to help me get one.

We spend about 50 minutes in South Antelope Canyon which is ample time to get all the photos one could want. South Antelope Canyon was a little smaller than North Antelope Canyon, and was much wider at the top than North Antelope Canyon. It was so bright due to wide top, that a tripod was not really necessary in the South Antelope Canyon.

We then hiked back to North Antelope canyon, and it then started getting cloudy again, so I was not really optimistic about my chances of having the sun required for the pictures.

We waited about 20 minutes until 12:40 which is the time the sun is positioned for the “God Rays” to appear, and as if magic about 2 minutes before showtime the clouds cleared. The guide was very helpful in telling me exactly where to be positioned to get the best shot. In order to see the actual sunlight, our guide has to shovel sand into the air so we could see the rays. It does get a little dusty while he is shoveling sand, so make sure to have the lenses you want on your camera already so you are not doing lens changes with dust everywhere. Our group got our pictures, and then we headed back out of the canyon.

Unfortunately, the steep hill we used to descend into the canyon, felt even steeper when we were climbing out. It is definitely NOT handicap accessible, and if you have any disabilities, could be very taxing. Sadly, Lucy, my 3 year old daughter tired on the climb out, and I then had to carry her out manually. Zack, my 7 year old son, had no issues racing to the top.

We then waited about 5 minutes for a van to come pick us up and take us back to the entrance.

This tour overall was excellent. While not as well known as Upper and Lower Antelope Canyon, nor is Antelope Canyon X as long or big as it’s sister canyons, it makes up for this in the experience. While I have not been to Upper or Lower Antelope Canyon, everyone I have talked that has gone, states that the experience is similar to that of being herded like cattle. There are set time limits in each spot, and then you have to move on. It is also extremely crowded, and very difficult to get good photography. While the signing up for the photography tour can buy you more time in Upper and Lower Antelope Canyon, it does not reduce the crowd level, which is at max capacity. While the other canyons offer more “God Ray” opportunities as there are more areas that they can appear, in my opinion it doesn’t matter if there are 20 people in your photo when you try and take a picture of them.

Antelope Canyon X is a much more serene experience. There is little no crowd, and you can truly take all the time you need to get the photos you want. Even the regular hiking tour seemed to have ample time to get the photos they wanted. If you are a photographer looking for a more serene and better photographic experience this is the tour for you.

From a family perspective, this is also a great family tour. My children played in the sand and climbed around the canyon while I took pictures. They were free to roam around the canyon as there was only one exit, and they enjoyed exploring around with little to no restriction.

There is nothing for them to accidentally break, and the guide was very friendly and helpful with the kiddos. He even gave them some pretzels midway through the tour when they said they were hungry, and was always very attentive to them. The pace is great for a family, as you can lag behind if you want, without fear of being left behind from the tour group. The only negative is the lack of bathroom facilities in the canyon and the trek out of the canyon with little kids can be a little taxing.

Overall, I give this tour 5/5 stars. The price was much more reasonable than the Upper and Lower Antelope Canyon tours, and the low crowds created a much better experience. I suggest hitting it up before everyone discovers this gem and it becomes just as if not more crowded that Upper and Lower Antelope Canyon.

Great review! I am hoping to do the tour with my kids this winter and have a quick question for you. Did you need to bring the kids carseats for the van ride?

Thanks for reading! We actually did not. You ride in a church van for about 10 minutes on a private road. It was a little bumpy at times, but our 7 and 3 year were just buckled up, and had no issues. The only other car you would pass would be another one of their vans. The chance of a wreck is low, but still possible as you could hit their own car. I’m sure if you brought your own car seat they would be amenable to it. You’d just have to leave it at the top of the canyon, as you don’t ride in the same van back.

By the letter of the law, you should be in a car seat, and as a board certified pediatrician, I must fully admit I was not abiding by current car seat guidelines for the short drive 10 minute drive on a private road.

I was trying to decide between the hiking tour and the photography tour and also to decide how much time to leave between this canyon x tour and the next attraction, we are planning to visit the lower antelope canyon after. I think after reading your page you convinced us to do the photography tour just to enjoy the experience even if we end up meandering around a bit.

Currently I am thinking to leave a 1.5h gap, so to book the 10 am canyon x and then to book the 2:30 pm lower antelope tour. What do you think? I know we have to be at the 2nd location 30 minutes before that tour..

Can you tell us how the End of the tour was setup? Did your tour take 3 hours ? or 2.5 ? Did they pretty much decide after 2:45h to collect all the people in the photography tour and head back ? Could you leave earlier if you wanted?

The end was based on the god rays. They seem to try and overlap a little for the photography tour. We were the first group and saw the beginning and got some time and then had to leave to let another group see some god rays. If it is cloudy if everyone in your group is good with leaving I am sure they would let y’all leave early. It is pretty lax in terms of timing. I am sure they would likely let you leave earlier if need be. The main bottle neck is the vans to get back to camp. You just have to wait for the next one. They are constantly coming and going but there is still a wait. 1.5 hours between tours is ample.

Your review was helpful is confirming my gut feeling that the lesser known canyon with a relaxed atmosphere and time to compose shots is the way to go. I only had one question I was hoping you could answer, did you find your 16mm lens to be helpful within the canyon or did you primarily shoot with 24mm? Thanks so much!

Thanks for reading. It’s been a while, but I am pretty sure I brought my EF 11-24mm f/4 along with my 24-70mm f/2.8 at the time. These canyons are very narrow at times and you absolutely need to go with the widest lens in your kit as possible. A 24mm would be good for some shots, but given how tight the area is you would be unable to really capture much of the area and your composition quite limited without much “expansiveness” to it making the pictures feel claustrophobic and less grand. I would rarely shoot at 24mm unless taking shots of people.

Antelope canyon x tour review, photos & experience.

We recently traveled through Arizona and tried all of the Antelope Canyon tours over the course of a week, and I would have to say our favorite was the Antelope Canyon X! Here’s our complete review from the visit.

If you haven’t heard of Antelope Canyon, it’s arguably the most famous and beautiful slot canyon in the United States, with its colorful walls, narrow passageways, and dramatic light beams peeking through the ceiling.

However, Antelope Canyon X tours explore a new section of the canyon that’s only been open to the public for just a few years, so it’s much less crowded and touristy compared to the main canyon, which has already become extremely popular.

Like the main canyons, Antelope X is located on the Navajo Nation, so unfortunately the only way to visit it is with a tour and a local Navajo guide.

In this Antelope Canyon X review, I’ll share my experiences and photos from our tour, and then I’ll explain the best time to visit, and everything else you need to know before you go!

Best Antelope Canyon X Tours

We booked our Antelope Canyon X tour with GetYourGuide and had a great experience. The price includes your entry tickets and a Navajo local guide. Everything was communicated clearly by email, and they have a refund policy if you need to cancel in advance.

If you’re coming from Las Vegas, they also have a full day trip to Antelope Canyon X and Horseshoe Bend that includes pickup and drop-off from Las Vegas. Antelope Canyon X Review: What To Expect On The Tour

The Antelope Canyon X tour visits two different nice slot canyon sections that are separated by a short, sandy wash.

After a quick check in process at the company’s parking lot, we hopped in an air-conditioned van and drove through the desert for 10 or 15 minutes to the start of the canyon. The road was a little bumpy, but nothing too terrible.

To reach the mouth of the slot canyon, you then walk down a flight of wooden stairs for another 5 or 10 minutes. You’ll be in the sun for awhile at first, although there are places to stop and rest in the shade.

Right away, we were struck by the lack of crowds. The tours here almost have a private vibe to them. Our group had no more than 10 people in it, and we only ran into one or two other small groups during our whole tour.

Antelope Canyon X is far less busy than the world famous Upper and Lower Canyon, and we found it much easier to take pictures without other people in them.

Personally, I think the scenery at Antelope Canyon X is also every bit as good as what you see at the Upper and Lower Canyons, and my wife agreed.

Just like the main canyons, Antelope X has wonderful twisting passageways and beautiful colors of pink and orange sandstone. It reminded me quite a bit of the Lower Antelope Canyon.

In total, we spent more than 1 hour inside the slot canyon sections, and we were able to walk slowly and take lots of pictures while also chatting with the Navajo guide about some of the history of the canyon.

It was a great experience and we felt like we got more value for our money compared to the other Antelope Canyon tours (Upper and Lower). In our road trips across the U.S. we have seen some of the best slot canyons in Arizona, Nevada , and Utah , but I’d say this one is right near the top.

Overall, I think the Antelope Canyon X tour is fantastic if you’re looking for a beautiful slot canyon without the crowds, cost, and hassle of the main canyons. Enjoy it before it gets too famous!

Best Time To Visit Antelope Canyon X

The best time to visit Antelope Canyon X is generally from the end of March to the beginning of October. The reason for this is because the lighting is better outside of the winter months.

However, unlike the Upper and Lower canyons, any time of day is good for visiting Antelope X. We went on an afternoon in May at 2:00 PM, and the lighting was great, although you could probably avoid some of the heat by going a bit earlier in the day.

The slots have some areas that are deep, and others that are shallow, so it can be beautiful and photogenic in a variety of lighting conditions.

The hiking path is not too hard, and should be fine for all ages as long as you’re reasonably fit.

Is The Tour Worth It?

Yes, the Canyon X is totally worth it! Prices for the tour can be as low as $60 USD per person, which is a real bargain in my opinion.

In contrast, prices for the Upper Antelope Canyon can be as high as $150 USD per person during the summer season, and it’s a much more rushed and crowded tour.

Antelope Canyon X vs Upper/Lower: Which Is Best?

So which Antelope Canyon is best — Upper, Lower, or X? That’s a good question.

We tried all of the Antelope Canyon tours over the course of a week, and I would have to say the winner for best value (and overall experience) was Antelope Canyon X.

While Canyon X may lack a few of the features that are great for photography in the Upper and Lower canyons, it’s a longer tour, meaning you have more time to look around, take pictures, and get creative.

The other thing about Antelope Canyon X is that it’s also much less crowded with tourists compared to the others, and you don’t have to worry about being badgered and rushed through the slot, like at Upper Canyon.

Last, but not least, it’s cheaper and easier to get a tour of Canyon X without booking it months in advance, which is important if you’re going to Arizona without much notice or traveling on a budget.

What To Do On The Tour (And What NOT To Do)

What To Bring: A passport or other ID, such as a driver’s license, for check in. During the tour, you can bring a water bottle, and a camera or phone for taking pictures. Older folks can also bring a walking stick if needed.
What NOT To Bring: You can’t bring pets, bags, backpacks, strollers, metal frame baby carriers, drones, selfie sticks, or tripods. They don’t allow bags of any kind in the canyon. Not even a small camera bag or fanny pack. You’ll have to leave these in your car at the parking lot. These are the same rules they have for all of the Navajo Nation slot canyons.
What NOT To Do: They don’t allow smoking, climbing, writing, flash photography, or video recording on the Antelope Canyon X tours. Non-flash photos are fine, and you can take as many as you want.

Other Tips For The Antelope Canyon X Tour

Bathrooms: There are portable toilets near the waiting area before you begin your tour, but no bathrooms during the tour, so you’ll want to take care of business before you start.
When To Book: In general, Antelope X is the easiest canyon to visit. You can usually book a tour at the last minute and still get a spot. Of course, that may change someday as it gets more popular.
Time Zones: There are multiple time zones used in this part of Arizona, which can get confusing, and it sometimes causes people to show up at the wrong time for their tour of Antelope Canyon. This is because the Navajo Nation observes Daylight Saving Time, but the rest of Arizona does not. Your phone may also switch time zones automatically while driving around in the state. However, the important thing to remember is that the Antelope Canyon tour companies all operate in the same time zone as Page, Arizona. You’ll want to set your clocks to Page, AZ local time, and make sure that’s when you show up.
How Early To Arrive: We were told to arrive 30 minutes early for check in, but you should double check this after booking your tour. The Navajos are usually pretty strict about tardiness, and you wouldn’t want to miss your tour.
How To Get There: The address where you’ll start and end the tour is MP 308, AZ-98, Page, AZ 86040, USA (click for map). It’s located right off of Arizona Highway 98, just a 15 minute drive from the town of Page.

What is Antelope Canyon X? Antelope Canyon X is a slot canyon on Navajo tribal land near Page, Arizona. It’s one of the less famous (but still beautiful) parts of the Antelope slot canyon complex.
Why the name? Where is the X? Antelope Canyon X gets its name from an X-shaped hole in the ceiling near the start of the slot canyon. Your Navajo guide will probably point out this feature to you during your tour, otherwise you can ask and they’ll show it to you.
How far is this from the main Antelope Canyon? All of the Antelope Canyon slots are located fairly close to each other. The Canyon X is located 5 miles (8 km) from Upper Antelope Canyon, while it’s about 9 miles (14 km) from Lower Antelope Canyon. They’re all near the town of Page, Arizona, but you have to book a separate tour for each one because they have different management.
What is the best time of day to see Antelope Canyon X? Any time of day should be good. The canyon has both light and dark chambers, so it’s good in a variety of lighting conditions. Even if some sections are dark when you visit, others will be bright and colorful.
Can you see light beams? We didn’t see any light beams on our tour when we went in late May, but the company says you can sometimes see them in the summer months of May through early August.

How long does the tour take? The tour lasts 1.5 hours in total. In our experience, about 1 hour was spent in the actual canyon, while the rest of the time was spent in transit.
How hard is the tour? The Canyon X tour is not very hard. Most of the walking is flat and easy, although there is a bit of an uphill climb on stairs when you go out of the canyon. In the summer heat, it wouldn’t be suitable for unfit older folks, or seniors using a walker or wheelchair, but most people will find it easy enough. There are no ladders or climbing, unlike at the Lower Antelope Canyon.
Is the tour okay for kids? Yes, the tour is fine for kids and they will have a blast. We had two young kids in our tour group and they had no difficulty with the hiking at all. Just make sure your kids know not to scratch or write on the canyon walls.

I’m not a doctor, but I think the biggest concerns for pregnant women here would be heat, bumpy roads, and the short uphill hike out of the canyon. All of these turned out to be pretty tame in our experience, but you’ll have to make your own decision based on your personal health and fitness, your doctor’s advice, etc.

Can you visit Antelope Canyon X without a tour? No, unfortunately you can’t see Antelope Canyon X without a tour and a local Navajo guide. This is a rule by Taadidiin Tours, the company that manages access to the land.

Is there hotel pickup and drop-off? The normal tours don’t include a pickup service. You drive there yourself. Taadidiin Tours is the only company offering tours to Antelope Canyon X and Cardiac Canyon. They specialize in smaller groups, and allow fewer people into the canyon each day compared to Upper or Lower Antelope Canyon.

Photography Tour

Photography tours are canceled and unavailable in most parts of Antelope Canyon … but …. they’re still offered at Antelope Canyon X!

They’re slightly more expensive, but lengthy: 3 hours. That allows photographers to find and shoot different locations in different light, as the sun moves across the sky during the day.

People who book photography tours can bring a tripod and camera bag.

The Experience in the Slot Canyon

The canyon at Antelope X is both V-shaped and A-shaped in spots.

Your guide will take you to two different spots in the slot canyon.

Hike Difficulty

There’s a 200-foot staircase to get into Canyon X, but there are no ladders involved. It’s a semi-steep walk down into the canyon.

The ground is rugged and uneven in spots inside the canyon, but most people will have no problem on the tour.

The X at Antelope X

There are really two X’s you’ll see on your tour. The first is an X pattern in the rocks above the area people used to enter. It took me a minute, but I spotted it!

The second X appears while you’re inside the slot canyon. In one spot, if you look straight up, the sandstone cliffs close in and form the shape of an X in the sky above.

The Light Beams

Parts of Antelope Canyon are known to photography enthusiasts for light beams that shine down, illuminating the dust in the canyon.

These are only visible when the sun is high in the sky during the summer months.

Photographers say the beams are best six weeks before and after the summer solstice.

Usually, the beams are visible in a couple parts of Antelope Canyon X by mid-May. They last through August.

PRO TIP : For your best chances of seeing (and photographing) the beams, book a midday tour.

How to Get to Antelope Canyon X

Antelope Canyon is a desert wash, which empties into Lake Powell in Page, AZ.

The entrance to Antelope Canyon X is on the southern end of the canyon, about 12 miles east of town on Highway 98.

You’ll check-in at the office, and be driven down to the entrance of Antelope Canyon X in a van.

Phoenix to Page

It’s about a 4.5-hour drive north, from Phoenix to Page, AZ. Visitors can begin a road trip in Phoenix and Scottsdale, before going to Sedona, then Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon while winding their way up to Page.

Las Vegas to Page

Page is the same distance to both Phoenix and Las Vegas. The drive is 4.5 hours, and around 275 miles. Visitors can drive from Vegas through St. George, Utah, and Zion National Park on their way to Page.

Fly into Page, AZ

Page has a small airport with one commercial airline. Contour Airlines flies a plane back and forth to PHX Phoenix Sky Harbor a couple of times each day. It’s a quick 30-45 minute flight each way.

Best Time to Visit Antelope Canyon X

Antelope Canyon is open year-round, so the best time to visit depends on your preferences.

Tour guides have told me: they see their smallest crowds in the winter months (December and January).

Summers are hot, but the temperature stays a bit cooler in the canyon. Plus, with the sun rising higher in the sky, it helps to illuminate more of the canyon walls.

A winter visit will be cooler, but still enjoyable. The Page area sees light snow a few times a year, which might stick around for a day or two before melting off.

A winter visit comes with a weather “wild card.” If you’re driving from Utah, the roads get rough in winter storms at higher elevations. The same is true in the Flagstaff area if you’re going north through Arizona to Page.

Most days, Antelope Canyon operates without any weather-related impacts.

Storm Warnings

It’s important to note : monsoon storms during the summer, and other weather systems during other times of the year, could impact your visit to any part of Antelope Canyon.

If there’s a threat of a flash flood in the canyon, tours will be canceled. Customers will be given a refund or can be rebooked on another tour after the weather clears.

Closures & Cancelations

Tours of Canyon X typically don’t operate on a few select dates during the year. These will be reflected on the booking calendar.

Tours of Cardiac Canyon and the special photography tours don’t usually operate on holidays.

Visit Cardiac Canyon the Same Day

Cardiac Canyon is another section of Antelope Canyon operated by Taadidiin. It only recently opened to the public, and the tour experience here is truly unique.

Only a handful of people are taken into Cardiac Canyon each day, and the tour lasts around 6 hours!

This part of the canyon gained its nickname from the steep entrance you’ll have to descend and then climb back up. This one is recommended for visitors who have some hiking experience and are in decent shape.

Two guides will lead you down, show you around, and then leave you to explore the canyon on your own. They say past visitors have brought books to read, taken naps, and done yoga inside.

This stretch of the canyon is 2.5 miles. Afterwards, you can opt to visit Antelope Canyon X, too.

Upper & Lower Antelope Canyon

Other parts of Antelope Canyon are operated a bit differently, by different Navajo families. Both Upper and Lower Antelope will be more crowded than Antelope Canyon X, but still offer beautiful experiences.

Upper Antelope Canyon

Upper Antelope Canyon is slightly closer to Page, and is mostly an A-shaped portion of the canyon. The walls are tighter at the top, meaning less light gets through. It creates moodier, darker photos.

Tours of Upper Antelope involve riding in a jeep from Page out to the location. There are no ladders involved at Upper Antelope.

Lower Antelope Canyon

Lower Antelope is closest to the end of the canyon, where it runs into Lake Powell.

The canyon is V-shaped here, allowing a lot of light in from above. This creates brighter, orangey walls inside.

Walking up steps inside Lower Antelope Canyon

Important for visitors: tours of Lower Antelope will involve ladders to get you down into the canyon, and to help get you up into different levels.

Two companies offer tours of Lower Antelope Canyon: Dixie’s and Ken’s Tours. Dixie and Ken are siblings, and their family has operated the tours here for decades.

Wahweap Marina only does full day rentals.

Hi, yes- I have watched a few videos of these trips and appreciate it does not look anything like antelope canyon but is still beautiful and will be nice to have a different experience. I realise now that it was antelope point that offered the hourly rental. Perhaps this is a better option then. I am just a little concerned that you cannot book hourly if half day rental until the day so we could be left with no availability. How long would it take to make the journey by boat from Mahaweap marina to antelope canyon? Thanks

In a speed boat, it's my guess that the out and back trip to Antelope Canyon from Wahweap would take at least three hours. From Antelope Point is could be about two hours or so. This is if you have the boat at full throttle all the time. But you won't be able to do that because of other boat traffic..

You know that you'll be spending several hundred dollars, plus fuel, for the boat rental. If you rent from Wahweap, your only option is an all day rental. That costs about $500 a day, plus fuel and you won't be using it all day.

Thanks for all the good advice. Yes- I’ve seen that the boat rentals are very expensive! I’ve seen a group boat trip from antelope point marina to antelope canyon. It is one hour long. Maybe that might be a better option? Or maybe we chance it and see if there is a boat available for private hire for a few hours on the day. I’m not sure how booked up they get in advance. Thanks

Have you seen the AC slot canyon tour? May I ask what it is it that you don't think she would be able to cope with? It is a short walk with some ramps at the end for Upper. If she can't handle that I would be concerned about how you are going to get her out onto the boat. I would also check the dates on the videos you watched in relation to current water levels.

Have you consider the 1/2 day float on the Colorado instead of the water section of AC on the lake?

@dbmove - The OP has booked Lower Antelope. So the ladders/stairs could be the issue.

Be aware that getting from the parking lot of Antelope Point Marina down to the boat dock is a long walk down a steep concrete path, but staffers can transport you down to the dock in golf carts. Not sure if that's something they allow you to pre-arrange, but call 928.645.5900 or 928.608.4457 to inquire about that.
