How to add your passenger side A-Pillar grab handle.

What size bolts did you use?  

Nice write up!! I did the same thing as 04Anniv did with one exception. The original grab handles are held in by threaded inserts in the 'A' pillar called Rivnuts. They are metal and get mushroomed/crushed into the holes. The holes, if I remember right, are hexagonal. Anyway, the Rivnuts aren't reusable so you can't salvage them from a junkyard van. I got the two of them I needed from the local Chrysler dealer and they were pretty cheap. Now I did this a few years ago and I'm going from my shaky memory, but I believe that I mushroomed the Rivnuts into place by using a bolt, a nut and a washer as a tool. I inserted each Rivnut into the hole in the A pillar from the front, screwed the proper sized bolt into it with the nut already on the bolt and the washer between the nut and the Rivnut. I held the nut with a wrench while tightening the bolt and that mushroomed the Rivnut into the hole. Then I removed the bolt and had a solid threaded insert to install the grab handle to. You can Google Rivnut for more installation tips. If you look at the 6th post down on the following linked H.A.M.B. forum you'll see pictures like I did it: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/install-riv-nut-without-special-tool.858166/ There are expensive 'special tools' for Rivnuts but you don't need them just to do a few. If you use the Rivnuts and the original attaching screws, the covers/caps will fit with no troubles. My biggest problem? Finding a the proper grab bar, 'A' pillar cover and associated parts in the junkyard. Look for Town and Country's as few Caravan's came with them. There are more in the junkyards now then when I did the swap. Incidentally, if you can't find the right color, just go to the Chrysler/Dodge dealer and order a spray can of interior spray paint. My van is dark blue inside and I had to paint the grab bar, my under-seat drawer and a couple other parts. They are perfect matches and you can't tell they aren't original parts. Bill

I thought this thread seemed familiar. My solution for installing a Grab Exit Handle in my 2003 Dodge Caravan  

Its ok he has done this to me before. One time he asked me how to fix a problem he was having...I found a video how to do it on Youtube showed him. Then a month or so later he was like "Hey Justin I figured out how to fix it look at the video I made." Oh you mean the video that is an exact copy of what I showed you to do. That wasn't my idea but he didn't figure it out on his own. Its ok...it was his idea here...Enjoy dude. Work towards your millionth post on the forum.  

Oh BTW if you would have bought shorter bolts you wouldn't have had to modify the little covers. I didn't. I was pissed...I am over it now. Good job!

Years ago I had to replace the padding trim on the dash under the steering wheel of my 86 Dodge Lancer ES. I bought it at the dealer, but they only made it in tan. I had a grey interior. So the parts guy told me to hit up a bodyshop supply store and they would make me a spray can of the right colour, right sheen level, and of the type of paint suitable for this application. In the end it worked like a charm!

Soap and water would work, for that matter. Any of the plastic parts that I painted still look new - no paint has come off at all and the color matches perfectly. The dash top cover above the turn signal indicators was cracked on mine when I got it and when I found a good one in the junkyard it was a different color. That was the first interior part I tried painting and it still looks new even though it's right in the sun all the time.  

Interesting...I got some ideas in mind now. How much did you pay for a can at the dealer? Thanks.

I took a look at Harbor Freight's threaded insert (Rivnut) tool. Is it at all possible to make an apology here or is it too late? I sincerely apologize to JustinSocial for not crediting his thread into mine...it might be too late but i'm sincerely sorry. I mean I get so caught up into things that I forget to credit other people for their work, I try my best to but sometimes things easily slip my mind....like this one. If it wasn't for you, I would surely have never figured out how to install the grab handle. Sanding can remove the surface texture of the pillar. Get a can of plastic prep and lightly spray the pillar so it's ready to accept paint. It's a bit like primer.  

If you don't sand like a horny kid with morning wood you should be fine. I sanded mine...just used a high numbered sanding sponge passed over it very lightly....I sanded and painted tons of crap in my car...didn't loose any texture on anything.  

04anniversaryedition and JustinSocial - Thanks all for these posts and information. It was a great help for me in taking on the same job switching over from one Caravan to another. My passengers kept groping for a handle that wasn't there and ended up rolling the window down to grab onto the roof. I knew I had to do something! Great photos.  

• Wiring for the airbag runs up the A-pillar behind the cover.
• The airbag itself extends about 3-4 inches behind the top end of the cover, and there is a cord that extends from the lower end of it for about 8-10" down the A-pillar, where it is screwed to the A-pillar.
• The cover is held on by a lower friction-fit clip, like the GC, but the upper end is held by a screw behind a small round cover, at the location where the upper end of the handle would be fastened on the GC. There is no rectangular hole in the A-pillar steel to accept the clip at the top end of the GC cover.
• The top corner of the cover, next to the side window, is rounded rather than square. I think this is to better allow the airbag to burst out from behind the headliner.
• I installed a 1/4-20 threaded insert to fasten the lower end of the handle.
• I notched the plastic of the handle beside the upper mounting tab to clear the airbag. I used a hacksaw; a strong, sharp knife would also work.
• The screws securing the ends of the handle are covered with an upper screw cover and a lower screw cover, each made of plastic, each held to the A-pillar cover with two plastic hooks that allow it to snap in place. There is a thin stiffening rib on the back of each hook. With the upper screw cover, this rib on one of the hooks interferes with the airbag, so the rib needed to be trimmed off with a sharp knife.
• Like I said above, the topmost clip on the GC's cover has no hole in the steel of the T&C's A-pillar to insert into, requiring modification. First I removed the metal clip and cut off the tab it mounts to. The cover still didn't fit. I used a Dremel with a small cutoff disk to remove the entire shape that supports the clip from the inside of the A-pillar cover. This allowed it to fit in place. When the handle is screwed to the A-pillar, it sufficiently holds the A-pillar cover in place without the clip.
• I trimmed the top corner of the A-pillar cover to match the original cover. I didn't have to do it to make it fit, but like I said above, I think the Chrysler engineers did this to aid the deployment of the airbag, so I mimicked their radius by cutting it with a hacksaw, then sanding the edge smooth. A casual observer wouldn't guess it had been trimmed.
• I fastened the upper end of the handle with the screw that held the upper end of the T&C's original cover. I used a new 1/4-20 x 3/4 screw with a washer to fasten the lower end of the handle.

That’s why I like to do this (document for others). My FIL, 80 years old, lives with us, has limited mobility, and most of the time when he leaves the house, it is in that van, so the handle was a necessity. I’ve done a few other modifications, mostly in the house, to accommodate him.  

Can I put a grab bar on driver's side of my son's 2012 grand caravan,he is paralyzed from the waist down and needs to grab a bar to pull himself in to his van

2010 Journey Passenger Grab Handle (bar)

I did a search trying several keywords but nothing came up so I'll ask here, if I missed a thread let me know.

I want to put a grab handle on the passenger side of my Journey so the wife has something to hang on to when I'm making a turn. I don't make turns at NASCAR speeds but she's used to grabbing one from when I had my old car, and besides, it's nice to have. I've been checking periodically but so far, nothing strikes me as useable. Is there anyone on here that has added one to their Journey? If so then when kind? I don't mind using an aftermarket product or one that was for another Mopar car, just as long as it works, is stable, and can be installed with not to much effort.

I could be wrong here, but I would think that the hole would be there in the frame for the handle already. I didn't realize that not all Journey's came with the holy shit handles. You may even be able to order the handle from the dealer (if you can't find the part, in the Interior section, there is a thread to all Journey part numbers). You may be able to install it yourself.

the hole might be there but the nutsert that provides the threads would most likely not be there and would have to be installed by the dealer, i would check with the dealership before trying to do it yourself.

Please keep this thread up to date because I too would like to add the grab handles (there would be 3 I suppose?).

There's no grab handles on your 2011? I wonder what trim level adds them. I don't recall seeing them specifically listed for any trim level, but all the DJs that I looked at had them.

My '11 DJ SXT has 4 grab handles or 1 above each door.

According to the Dodge web site In the US the grips are on the Crew and above - the AVP, SE and SXT don't get them. And I quote:

That's just silly. "Oh #$!@" bars should be standard equipment on all vehicles. Especially on crossovers/SUVs/trucks/vans ... basically anything that isn't low to the ground, like a sedan/compact car. At the same time, I don't really miss them, as a driver.

My 2012 V6 Crew Journey does not have grab handles. We had a 2011 for a few weeks before it was totalled on the way home from my daughter's wedding. It was a 4 cyl SXT model and it also came with a power driver seat and the compartment under the front passenger seat. I would have thought the Crew model would have more features, not less. The 2012 does have real wheels and foglights though and I do like the V6, especially with a full load of passengers. I will take the suggestion and find a dealer or body shop to install my $12 handle which I ordered from the dealer. Great price!

I have a grab handle above each door in my Crossroad. Anyone know what a Citadel is? I saw a Durango Citadel, but I don't believe I have ever seen that on a DJ.

The DJ doesn't have a Citadel model... more or less, it is a fully equipped Durango with all of the bells and whistles.

Thanks but the dealer was no help.  Maybe I'll try another dealer...  

I'm gonna have to check when I get off work this evening to see if they are there in my SE(i know the post above says they aren't but I swear I remember them being there).
