2024 FLOWER SEASON

Planning stage-subject to confirmation.

Traveltime has visited the Cape Floral Kingdom for 16 years now, concentrating on the West Coast from Cape Town to Springbok and the Northern Cape into Nieuwoudtville. The West Coast National Park (Postberg Flower Reserve) always provides a tapestry of colour, even when other areas are slow in blooming. Flower Tours should be number 1 on your bucket list!

We offer a personalised service and only travel in small groups (maximum 14 passengers), except for the day trip into Postberg Flower Reserve, where we, historically, have used a 44-seater coach. For overland tours, accommodation is hand picked and we make sure that all meals are of the highest quality.

The tours listed below are the only Flower Tours we offer. Whilst the itinerary is essentially the same each year, (tried and tested), we do not repeat these on different dates over the Flower Tours Season. Where some variation in choice or dates is needed, we include other flower tours on our website, which are offered by our own service providers.

Scroll through our offering and confirm your interest in receiving a priced itinerary on any of the listed tours, once available.

This tour is a bus-only tour. The size of the group will determine the bus we take. We keep our transport in the luxury category. The advantage of a smaller group is that with a smaller bus we can go into more unique areas.

The alternative to this tour is the NLW6G: WEST COAST & NAMAQUALAND   tour   (GP-GP 6 days) -- that is the tour which starts and ends in Johannesburg, or the NLW6C: WEST COAST & NAMAQUALAND   tour   (CT-CT 6 days) -- that is the tour which starts and ends in Cape Town

This tour of 8 (eight) days covers the Matsikamma, the real Namaqualand , the 'boland' of the Namaqualand, Kalahari, and through the Northern Cape, and also the HANTAM !.

Here is a typical itinerary of the tour:

Day 1 : Northern Cape Kalahari and wine region

We depart from Gauteng at 05:00. We travel through the Northern Cape towards the Orange River (Gariep River) region, via the towns of Vryburg, Kuruman, Upington , Keimoes, and Kakamas , where we spend our first night.

This tour is based on a bed and breakfast basis. Lunches, Dinners and drinks are for your own account.

South Africa Namaqualand - Augrabies Waterfall

Augrabies Waterfall

Day 2 : Augrabies, Springbok

We depart after breakfast, to the Augrabies National Park , to view close-up the granite-confined waters of the Gariep (Orange) River, where it cascades over the several falls, and continues down to the Atlantic Ocean. Augrabies means 'The place of great noise' and it lies at the heart of the remote and fascinating Augrabies National Park.

We continue our travels and at Pofadder we have a brief comfort stop. We overnight with bed and breakfast in the Springbok / Nababeep area.

Namakwaland blomme - Namaqualand flowers

Day 3 : Namakwaland, Kamiesberg region, Vredendal

Today we visit the attractive area of Springbok, Okiep, and Nababeep, walking amongst and getting close-up to the flowers, to get those special near photos.

We continue to the areas where the flowers are most beautiful on the day, choosing amongst, for instance Goegap Nature Reserve / Namaqua National Park / Kamiesberg, etc, where fields of flowers await us.

We overnight in the area of Vanrhynsdorp / Vredendal , on Bed and breakfast basis.

Day 4 : Cedarberg, Clanwilliam, Lambert's Bay area

After a well deserved breakfast, we visit the Clanwilliam area. It is in this region where the much loved Rooibos tea is cultivated. A visit to the Ramskop Nature Garden, is certainly a must.

We continue to the Rooibos tea factory, and also the Veldshoe Factory (vellies), attractions not to be missed. We go say hello to the Atlantic Ocean, travelling to Lambert's Bay area, where we have a late lunch / early dinner, and overnight on bed and breakfast basis in Vredendal area.

Day 5 : Maskam, Nieuwoudville

Today we travel to the Flower Bulb Capital of the world, Nieuwoudtville , where the bulb species grow on the 'Boland of the Namaqualand'. An amazing array of species are found here - some particularly endemic to the region. We visit the 100m deep Nieuwoudtville Waterfall and the Succulent Nursery in Vanrhynsdorp - another day of hunting for the most beautiful areas of wildflowers.

We overnight on one of the farms in the area of Nieuwoudtville, amongst the flowers!

Day 6 : Nieuwoudville, Calvinia

The Cedarberg Mountains, named after the Cedar Tree which is now threatened in this region.

Day 7 : Hantam, Boesmanland, Gariep

After breakfast, our journey continues through the southern region of the Boesmanland , through Brandvlei, to the Great Gariep, and Olifantshoek. We see the last of the amazing flowers, and take a few photos of rows and rows of community birds' nests , telephone lines, and many quiver trees .

We overnight on Bed and breakfast basis.

Day 8 : We return home with lots of memories and good friends, again travelling through the Upper Northern Cape, back home to Gauteng, the province of Johannesburg and Pretoria, to arrive late afternoon / early evening.

An amazing follow-up tour to consider is the:

The area around the Cape on the south-western tip of Africa is not often explored on regular tours of the country, yet holds many magnificent secrets, ready to be explored on our Around-the-Cape tour.

We venture into the countryside and bring you the exhilaration of unexplored areas -- 'Around the Cape'. Come and enjoy with us the Open and Green, the endless Karoo and the blue seas, really wild open skies, and really deep valleys...

We arrive in Cape Town, the Mother City of South Africa, by plane at the International Airport, and make our way to the town of Tulbach , where we explore this old town which was partly destroyed by an earthquake , which is a rare natural disaster in South Africa, years ago.

Many interesting small shops in town are eager to welcome you, especially in the street which was reconstructed after the earthquake.

A selection of restaurants stands ready to serve a meal of your choice in the tranquil setting of the Boland .

This tour is based on a bed and breakfast basis. Lunch, Dinner and drinks are for your own account.

We overnight at our Lodge on Bed and Breakfast basis.

Day 2 - Around the Cape tour

Square Kilometer Array telescope, Sutherland

We depart Tulbach, heading out to Sutherland.

This is the far-off Karoo dorp with the exceptional privilege of housing SALT, the largest telescope in South Africa , and soon will be hosting the largest on the planet, shared with Australia -- the SKA, square kilometre array telescope.

Here we visit the telescope installation outside of town, later to return for our stargazing into the evening sky, with stories and exploration on our minds, told by one of the astrologically knowledgeable local residents.

Overnight at our Lodge. B B included.

We depart Sutherland for Matjiesfontein , where we explore the wonderful old buildings of yesteryear, with lunch in the Lord Nelson Hotel, or similar.

Matjiesfontein is that beautifully preserved, old-charm train station town on the way between Cape Town and Johannesburg, nestled in the Karoo along the main N1 motorway.

We continue our journey to Prince Albert , which is spread out at the foothills of the Swartberg Mountain range, another of those towns you want to spend a few days in, neat Karoo town with old world charm, now also famous for the TV cook series, Kokkedoor.

Road to the Hell, Gamkaskloof, Swartberg mountains

Today you have the opportunity to go to Hell and back -- no not literally to the Hell of your conviction, but literally to the far-off settlement of The Hell , in the Gamkaskloof .

It is a 4x4 route, and you will enjoy the scenery and comfortable ride. Down in The Hell is another tale of confined space, but with fertile soil and many stories of the people who settled there and made a living under very difficult circumstances.

Another option is to explore the town of Prince Albert and its surroundings of fruit farming, dairy farming, and many shops, art collections, art to buy, exquisite cuisine, vistas and stories.

We travel either over the Swartberg Pass , or through Meiringspoort , visiting the ostrich industry and the Cango Caves of Oudtshoorn.

There is a magnificent restaurant under the Swartberg mountains (on the other side) waiting to entertain your taste buds with delicious food from the area.

We overnight in the vicinity of Oudtshoorn or the R62 route. B B included.

We continue through the Little Karoo to the southern tip of Africa, Cape Agulhas . We spend the day in the vicinity of Cape Agulhas, exploring the surrounding farms and enjoying the ocean - you might see some whales! You have the rare opportunity to be at the point where the Indian Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean meet.

Visit also the Cape Agulhas lighthouse.

We depart Cape Agulhas for Cape Town, travelling through the Overberg , enjoying the many mountains and towns on our way to the Mother City.

We overnight in the vicinity of Stellenbosch. B B included.

Premier Classe luxury train

We depart Cape Town on the Premier Classe train to Johannesburg, a luxury experience, where you relax and enjoy the scenery, and have three meals, luxuriously set in the Dining car on board the train.

Overnight on the Premier Classe train. All three meals included. Only two guests per compartment, or for single guests: only one per coupe.

We arrive at Johannesburg Park station at approximately 11:00, relaxed and excited for our next tour with Touring South Africa !

Breakaway Namaqualand, West coast, Cederberg. ( A flower tour )

This is one of the tours aimed to be a break from the COVID pains and celebrate life.

This tour is a short, 6 night, tour focusing on the flower area of Namaqualand and the Cederberg. It follows directly on the heals of the Richtersveld tour and is ideal to do together and start experiencing the flowers in the northern area already. We visit the Namaqua national park and west coast for our flower experience. We should be in the middle of the flower season.

The next section is a very special night at the West coast camp site.  We do a bit of sand driving, visit the seal colony and just have a bit of fun. 1 Night in case of bad weather, but enough time to see what is out there.

Then we head inland again and on to the Cederberg area. 2 nights here will give us a day to explore what there is around here and also a day to do a bit of trekking in the reserve. Visiting of the well known rock formations. A bit of wine tasting and nature drive.

The Itinerary

We all make our way to the starting point of our journey. We meet at our overnight accommodation at Springbok.

We take the day to visit the Namaqua national park and we tour their various spots for flowers and other interesting things.

Once we are done we head down to the coastal section for the night.

After breakfast we continue down the beach until our exit at Groenriviermond from where we head to Nieuwoudville. Normally one of the flower hot spots.

We take the back roads and visit more of the normal flowering hot spots and finall end up in Elandsbaai.

From Elandsbaai we will be exploring the area and drive a few back roads along the coastal area. We see where the best displays are and head there.

Finally we end up in Yzerfontein.

We head to an olive farm for a bit of a tasting  and then north in to the Cederberg mountains.

Here a bit of wine tasting before our last night. This is also where my Cape fold mountain pass tour begins if you were interested.

Our tour concludes and I start my Cape fold mountain pass tour .

23 of the Best Lilac Varieties to Grow at Home

A close up horizontal image of different colored lilac flowers in a wicker basket set on a wooden table and pictured on a soft focus background.

When I was a kid, my dad built my sister and me a zipline running from a spruce tree to a playhouse in our garden.

I loved the zipline, but my favorite part was the little platform high in the spruce tree. I’d go up there to read books and eat snacks.

Just below the tree stood a fragrant lilac bush that became the steady backdrop of every spring day I spent up on the platform.

A close up vertical image of a large lilac shrub with pink and purple flowers growing beside a white picket fence. To the center and bottom of the frame is green and white printed text.

We link to vendors to help you find relevant products. If you buy from one of our links,  we may earn a commission .

Nowadays, I spend a lot of time gazing at the lilac bush I’ve planted in view of my kitchen window and dreaming up places to plant more.

When I peruse nurseries each spring, there are always several different types, and it can be hard to choose between them.

Which are the most fragrant? Which will thrive in my growing zone? I suspect you have these questions, too.

So for all you lilac lovers out there, in this article, I’ll introduce you to my 23 favorite varieties.

23 of the Best Lilacs for Your Garden

  • Agincourt Beauty
  • Beauty of Moscow
  • Be Right Back
  • Charles Joly
  • Common Purple
  • Common White

Dwarf Korean

  • James Macfarlane
  • Japanese Tree Lilac
  • Ludwig Spaeth
  • Miss Canada
  • Scentara Double Blue
  • Scent and Sensibility Pink
  • Tiny Dancer
  • Yankee Doodle

In order to flower, a lilac needs over 2,000 chill hours below 45°F during the winter, which makes it the ultimate cold-weather shrub.

Due to its love for chilly temperatures, I would never think to associate it with an olive tree .

A close up vertical image of bright purple Syringa vulgaris growing in the garden pictured on a soft focus background.

However, deciduous, perennial lilacs are part of the olive family, Oleaceae. Most lilacs thrive in Zones 3-7, but some are hardy to Zone 2. Other cultivars, bred specifically for warmer weather, grow well in Zones 8 and 9 – some even in parts of Zone 10.

There are twelve species in the genus Syringa , and if you’re just getting started, you can learn all about how to cultivate them in your garden in our guide to growing lilacs .

Swedish scientist Carl Linnaeus first named the genus in 1753. The word “syringa” comes from the ancient Greek word “syrinx,” which means pipe or tube. It refers to the mythological nymph, Syrinx, who changed into hollow reeds in order to escape the lustful advances of the god Pan.

Thus, Syrinx gave us words for hollow things, like syringes – and the branches of lilac shrubs, which are hollow yet strong.

Lilacs are known for their panicles of purple, pink, or white flowers, and their deep green foliage, which is heart-shaped on some cultivars. In the United States, the most commonly grown species is S. vulgaris , the common lilac.

A close up horizontal image of a light purple flower growing against a red wooden house.

Many of the lilacs described below are cultivars of S. vulgaris and are called “French hybrids” or “French lilacs.” They are intraspecific crosses, which means they are not crossed with a different species.

Many of these originated in France, thanks to the efforts of Victor Lemoine and his wife Marie in the 1870s. Their son and grandson continued to breed lilacs, and between them the family introduced over 200 cultivars between 1876 and 1953.

The name “French hybrid” has stuck even though many were, and still are, also cultivated in the United States and other European countries.

French hybrids may be single flowered with four petals on each bloom, but some cultivars are double-flowered for an extra-full, lush look with as many as 12 petals on a single flower.

Most French hybrids grow to between four and 20 feet tall at maturity. Some have a compact, upright growth habit, while others tend to spread.

Some may be described as reblooming, which means they flower in the spring followed by a further flush of color in late summer.

Victor Lemoine also hybridized S. vulgaris with the Chinese lilac, S. oblata , to produce what are often called Hyacinflora lilacs, S . x hyacinthiflora . These early-blooming varieties have flowers that resemble tiny hyacinths.

Another notable plant breeder from Canada, Isabella Preston, produced 82 different hybrid lilacs between 1912 and 1946. These are commonly referred to as Preston lilacs, or S . x prestoniae .

Other common species include:

  • Japanese tree lilacs, S. reticulata , are fragrant trees that grow up to 30 feet tall with a spread of 20 feet.
  • Korean lilacs S. meyeri , aka S. pubescens , are spicy-sweet scented shrubs that grow just seven feet tall with a spread of five feet.
  • Persian S. persica , which grows four to eight feet tall with a spread of five to 10 feet, smells delightful, and is native to Iran.
  • S. emodi , aka Himalayan lilac, has an upright growth habit and reaches up to 16 feet tall with a spread of 13 feet and does not smell pleasant.

All are beautiful in their own right, and most give off one of the most alluring smells in the world.

1. Agincourt Beauty

Do you want blooms with huge florets to cut and and place in a vase, filling your home with the sweet smell of springtime?

Then ‘Agincourt Beauty’ ( S. vulgaris ), which blooms from late April to early May, is the lilac for you.

With the biggest individual florets of all lilac species and cultivars, ‘Agincourt Beauty’ is a vibrant violet stunner.

‘Agincourt Beauty’

This cultivar thrives in Zones 3-7 and reaches a dazzling height of 10 to 12 feet tall with a spread of eight to 10 feet. I definitely need to get my hands on an ‘Agincourt Beauty’ plant for my backyard.

You can find bare roots or a live plant in a three-inch container available at Nature Hills Nursery .

2. Beauty of Moscow

For a sweet surprise, plant ‘Beauty of Moscow’ ( S. vulgaris ), aka ‘Krasavitsa Moskvy’ – which literally translates from Russian to “beauty of Moscow” – in your yard or garden.

This shrub forms soft-pink buds that bloom into white, double-flowered blossoms. Delicately beautiful, the flowers are also highly fragrant.

Cut one or two clusters from the plant, put them in a vase, and enjoy the sweet smell of springtime throughout your entire house.

‘Beauty of Moscow’

‘Beauty of Moscow’ flowers in May. It’s hardy to Zones 3-7, reaches a mature height of 10-12 feet, with a spread of up to eight feet.

You can find bare roots to plant available at Nature Hills Nursery .

3. Be Right Back

With dark pink buds that give way to large, fragrant, pink flowers, ‘Be Right Back’ ( S. hybrida ‘ GARlisabzar’) is a reblooming lilac that flowers in early summer and just when you think your season of color is over, blooms again in early fall.

A close up square image of the bright pink flowers of Syringa vulgaris 'Be Right Back' growing in the garden pictured on a soft focus background.

‘Be Right Back’

‘Be Right Back’ grows to a mature height of four feet, with a similar width. It’s hardy in Zones 4-8.

You can find four-inch potted plants from Spring Hills Nursery via the Home Depot .

4. Bloomerang

Bloomerang® is a hybrid series of compact, reblooming lilacs with a rounded growth habit.

Bloomerang®, S. hybrida ‘Penda,’ produces light pink, fragrant flowers in late spring, then from July puts on a spectacular show of bright purple blossoms that last until first frost.

Bloomerang®

Bloomerang® does best in Zones 3-7, and reaches a mature height and width of three to six feet.

5. Charles Joly

Do you need some magenta in your life right about now? Then let ‘Charles Joly’ ( S. vulgaris ) deliver just that.

This sweet-smelling shrub grows up to 12 feet tall with a spread of 10 feet, and thrives in Zones 3-7. But its striking double-flowered blooms are its most treasured trait.

‘Charles Joly’

Blooming begins from mid- to late spring and lasts three to four weeks. ‘Charles Joly’ received the Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society in 1993.

You can find plants in two-inch containers available at Nature Hills Nursery .

6. Common Purple

S. vulgaris , the common lilac, is the species plant from which dozens of cultivars have been developed.

It was brought to the United States from Europe in the 1700s. Blooming in late May, it’s adaptable to many types of soil. Its lavender-colored flowers give off that classic, sweet scent.

A close up square image of purple flowers of Syringa vulgaris growing in the garden pictured in bright sunshine with blue sky and foliage in soft focus in the background.

S. vulgaris

I’m pretty sure we had a common lilac under the zipline tree in my childhood yard in Montana. I’ll be planting one of these shrubs, which are hardy to Zones 3-7 and grow to a height and width of eight to 10 feet, this spring.

If you want to do the same, you can find bare root plants from Nature Hills Nursery .

7. Common White

If you live in Zone 2, you’re in luck: the common white variety ( S. vulgaris var. alba ) thrives in Zones 2-7.

This is a subspecies of the purple common lilac, described above.

A close up square image of the white flowers of Syringa vulgaris pictured in bright sunshine on a soft focus background.

S. vulgaris var. alba

With snow-white blooms and a heavy, heady fragrance, this shrub blooms in mid-spring to early summer and offers everything lovely about lilacs to those who prefer white to purple.

The common white lilac grows eight to 10 feet tall and wide.

Find bare root plants online at Nature Hills Nursery .

8. Dwarf Korean

Dwarf Korean ( S. meyeri ‘Palibin’) is a popular six-foot shrub with an eight-foot spread, and I see it all the time in nurseries up here in Alaska.

It’s ideal for smaller gardens or container growing, thanks so its rounded, bushy growth habit and mature height and width of four to five feet.

A recipient of the Award of Garden Merit in 1993, this cultivar also won a gold medal from the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society in 2000.

A close up square image of a dwarf Korean lilic with bright pink flowers growing beside a brick house, pictured in bright sunshine.

The purple flowers bloom profusely in the spring and give off a sweet fragrance. They close out the summer with one light rebloom to leave you with a sweet memory until it blooms again next spring.

Find bare root plants, three-inch, or five-inch containers from Nature Hills Nursery .

9. Ivory Silk

‘Ivory Silk’ is a Japanese tree lilac ( S. reticulata ) cultivar that produces huge, cream-colored panicles and delivers that classic lilac scent.

You’ll need a lot of room in your garden if you want to grow this one, as it tops out between 15-25 feet tall with a spread of 10-15 feet.

A square image of a large Syringa vulgaris 'Ivory Silk' growing in a garden border with blue sky and a house in the background.

‘Ivory Silk’

The dark reddish bark makes an attractive statement in your yard even once the leaves drop off in the fall.

‘Ivory Silk’ is hardy to Zones 3-7, blooms in June, and provides the perfect shade for a sweet-scented picnic.

Find bare root plants, as well as five-inch containers, available at Nature Hills Nursery .

10. James Macfarlane

‘James Macfarlane’ ( S . x prestoniae ) is a Preston lilac that produces dark-pink buds that open into light-pink flowers.

He grows up to eight feet tall with a spread of up to 10 feet, making him a perfect choice for a privacy hedge.

‘James Macfarlane’

Plus, he’s extra-hardy, thriving in Zones 2-7. Sweet-smelling ‘James Macfarlane’ blooms in May and June.

You can find bare root plants available at Nature Hills Nursery .

11. Japanese Tree Lilac

The species S. reticulata aka Japanese tree lilac, is a multi-branched tree that produces small cream-colored flowers and deep green leaves that drape elegantly over your grassy yard.

I call it the “reading lilac,” because the tree creates a cozy nook for book-lovers like me to spread a picnic blanket and curl up with a novel.

Despite their small size, the early summer-blooming flowers pack plenty of scent.

A close up square image of a large Japanese lilac shrub growing in the garden pictured in light sunshine.

S. reticulata

S. reticulata grows up to a stunning 20-25 feet tall with a spread of 15-25 feet, and does best in Zones 3-7.

Find bare root plants available at Nature Hills Nursery .

12. Ludwig Spaeth

The deep purple-red color of ‘Ludwig Spaeth’ ( S. x vulgaris ) is enough to make even the hardest heart swoon.

The flowers of this French hybrid are also highly fragrant. It blooms slightly later in the spring or early summer than other varieties, making it easy for you to extend your yard’s lilac show.

A close up square image of the dark purple flowers of Syringa vulgaris 'Ludwig Spaeth' pictured on a soft focus background.

‘Ludwig Spaeth’

Reaching up to 10 feet tall and spreading up to eight feet wide, ‘Ludwig Spaeth’ creates a wonderful privacy hedge and does best in Zones 3-7.

You can find bare root plants online via Nature Hills Nursery .

13. Miss Canada

For a pink-flowered Preston cultivar that also provides pretty foliage in the fall, try ‘Miss Canada’ ( S. x prestoniae ).

This mid-sized shrub grows to between six and nine feet tall and five and eight feet wide. Its clusters of flowers bloom in early summer for two to three weeks.

A close up square image of Syringa vulgaris 'Miss Canada' with pink flowers pictured on a soft focus background.

‘Miss Canada’

The cheerful pink blossoms smell delightful, and the shrub thrives in Zones 3-7. In the fall, the leaves turn a rich yellow color.

14. Miss Kim

‘Miss Kim’ is a cultivar of  S. pubescens var. patula , a dwarf Korean lilac originally introduced by University of New Hampshire in 1954.

It’s ideal for those in slightly warmer growing zones, as she thrives in Zones 4-9. This tidy shrub reaches a height and width of four to five feet and produces large, sweet-smelling blooms in a light-purple color.

A close up square image of Syringa vulgaris 'Miss Kim' growing in the garden next to a concrete pathway.

‘Miss Kim’

A prolific bloomer, ‘Miss Kim’ produces flowers in the springtime, but her dark-green foliage remains attractive during the summer before it gives way to a stunning claret in the fall.

You can find bare root plants, three-inch containers, or five-inch containers from Nature Hills Nursery .

As peppy as her name suggests, ‘Rosie’ ( S. vulgaris ), wows you with her bright-pink flowers – and her heat tolerance.

She’s part of the Beach Party™ series of “low chill” lilac cultivars developed by John Schoustra, a plant breeder in California.

A close up square image of Syringa vulgaris 'Rosie Beach Party' growing in the garden pictured on a soft focus background.

‘Rosie’

Which is good news for those of you in warmer growing zones: with fewer chilling hours required than is typical in a lilac, she thrives in Zones 4-10.

‘Rosie’ grows up to 12 feet tall and spreads six to eight feet, and smells delightful.

You can buy ‘Rosie’ in four-inch pots from Spring Hill Nurseries via the Home Depot .

16. Royalty

Do you want a light, lavender-colored cultivar that’s highly aromatic and blooms later in the spring and early summer than other varieties?

Then try ‘Royalty’ ( S . x josiflexa ), bred in Canada by renowned horticulturist Isabella Preston in the 1920s.

A close up square image of the flowers of Syringa vulgaris 'Royalty' growing in the garden with foliage in soft focus in the background.

‘Royalty’

While its blossoms are a lighter color, this Preston lilac’s buds are dark, giving the panicles a layered look.

Hardy to Zones 3-8 and requiring slightly fewer chill hours than other varieties, ‘Royalty’ grows up to 10 feet tall and spreads up to eight feet.

Find bare roots, as well as live plants in three- and five-inch containers, at Nature Hills Nursery .

17. Saugeana

‘Saugeana’ aka ‘Persian’ lilac is a hybrid cross between S. vulgaris and S. persica , sometimes listed as S x chinensis .

It was first discovered in Rouen, France, in 1777 and is sometimes referred to as the “Rouen lilac.”

A close up square image of Persian lilac with bright pink flowers pictured in light sunshine with foliage in soft focus in the background.

‘Saugeana’

‘Saugeana’ produces pale purple flowers from mid-May with a sweet fragrance. The shrub grows four to eight feet tall and spreads all the way up to 10 feet wide.

This variety adapts well to almost any soil and is hardy in Zones 3-7.

18. Scentara Double Blue

For an alluring double-flowered blossom that’s the most gorgeous blue-violet color you’ve ever seen, plant ‘Scentara Double Blue’ ( S . x hyacinthiflora ).

This cultivar blooms in mid-spring and fills your yard with that pleasing, classic lilac scent.

A close up square image of Syringa vulgaris 'Double Blue' growing in the garden pictured in light sunshine on a soft focus background.

‘Scentara Double Blue’

The shrub grows six to eight feet tall with a similar spread and thrives in Zones 2-8. I dream of a vase filled with these blue-purple flowers on every windowsill in my house.

You can order plants in one-quart containers from Proven Winners at the Home Depot .

19. Scent and Sensibility Pink

I’m lucky enough to have a ‘Scent and Sensibility Pink’ ( S. x ‘SMSXPM’) right outside my kitchen window. Each spring, it blooms in light-pink bouquets of fragrant beauty.

The blooms stop coming in midsummer, but just as you start to really miss them, August brings another flush of blossoms.

A close up square image of Syringa vulgaris 'Scent and Sensibility' growing by the side of a river with bright pink flowers, and a dog in the foreground.

‘Scent and Sensibility Pink’

‘Scent and Sensibility Pink’ is a compact variety and only grows to about three feet high, but it can spread up to six feet, giving your garden or borders a pleasant, sprawling look.

This cultivar grows best in Zones 3-7.

You can find plants available at Burpee .

20. Sensation

If you adore both purple and white lilacs, why not try ‘Sensation’ ( S. vulgaris )? This unique cultivar boasts purple flowers edged in white for an elegant, layered look.

So beautiful is this cultivar that it was awarded the Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit in 2012. Plus, it blesses you with its beauty for a full month in mid-spring.

Find a four-inch pots available from Spring Hill Nurseries via the Home Depot .

22. Tiny Dancer

If you dream of a fragrant border that doesn’t require constant trimming to make sure it doesn’t swallow your yard, try ‘Tiny Dancer’ ( S. vulgaris ) aka ‘Elsdancer.’

This dwarf variety grows up to just five feet tall and three to four feet wide and produces four- to five-inch bunches of heady lavender-colored blooms.

A close up square image of the flowers of Syringa vulgaris 'Tiny Dancer' growing in the garden pictured on a soft focus background.

‘Tiny Dancer’

‘Tiny Dancer’ isn’t as cold-hardy as some other cultivars – it thrives in  Zones 4-8. It’s resistant to powdery mildew, making it an ideal cultivar for those of you who live in rainy areas.

Find bare root plants available at Burpee during the spring and summer months.

23. Yankee Doodle

For a classic American lilac, plant a ‘Yankee Doodle’ ( S. vulgaris ) in your yard.

This deep-purple beauty was cultivated in 1985 by Father John L. Fiala, an avid Ohio lilac breeder, and he counted it among his favorite creations.

A close up square image of Syringa vulgaris 'Yankee Doodle' with purple flowers growing in the garden pictured in light sunshine.

‘Yankee Doodle’

‘Yankee Doodle’ grows up to 10 feet tall and spreads up to six feet. Highly aromatic, ‘Yankee Doodle’ blooms in late spring for up to four weeks and thrives in Zones 2-8.

Dreaming of Spring

There’s so much to look forward to in the springtime when you’ve got one (or five) lilac bushes or trees planted throughout your yard.

If you love these plants as much as I do, try combining early bloomers with late bloomers for a near-constant rush of scent and color.

Thank you so much for letting us know that some lilac varieties can grow in zone 9. I live on the central coast of California and thought that I would have to forego them!

Laura Ojeda Melchor

Thank you for your comment, Helga! 🙂

Lori A Foote

Is there a lilac plant named Delila or possibly Lila? Thank-you

Hi Lori! I’m not aware of a lilac with that name. Do you know any characteristics of this plant? I’d love to help you find it.

Rhonda

There is a soft pink lilac called lila.

Cindy

Can you plant different lilacs together?

You can, although you’ll need to closely monitor the plants for pests and diseases, as growing multiple lilacs increases the chances of having lilac-specific maladies plague your plants. But planting different varieties together makes for a gorgeous yard, and it’s something I’ve done before!

Also, just make sure to space the plants appropriately. That way, they won’t intertwine and begin growing as one mass — more on that in this interesting article .

Mark Patton

As a landscaper, this article is one of the best primers on lilacs. I forward the website to my clients so they can choose for themselves. Nicely done, and thanks for the article!

Allison Sidhu

Thanks so much, Mark!

Sue

At the risk of sounding ignorant, are tricoloured lilacs always grafted or with three plants potted together? I ask because a gentleman is advertising small plants taken from a larger tricolour bush, and says that one branch will produce several colours. Bluish-purple, white, and what looks like “Sensation” you’ve included in this article.

Rose Kennedy

Hello Sue! Thanks for reading Laura’s piece. As for tricolor lilac varieties, they are propagated from seed, cuttings, or plant tissue. I would love to know if the type this gentleman is selling has a registered name or is just a local thing. If you’re worried it won’t bloom as advertised, most sellers would be happy to let you see the parent plant or a photo. Let us know if you learn the variety name or if you do purchase one of the young seedlings. Our readers and I would enjoy it if you shared a photo! And by the …  Read more »

What is the kind of lilac that bends up. Not like a disease, but just bends up.

I think it’s Syringa x chinensis (Chinese lilac).

Hello Nicholas Oborny. I concur, and those twisting branches sure are intriguing.

Here’s a photo I dug up credited to Wikimedia Commons:

I’m probably the opposite of most; I love lilacs but HATE having to duck under the branches while mowing with riding mower. I want fragrant varieties that grow 4-5ft tall before branching out at all. know of any? I live in Nashville tn.

Hello larry willard! I can see your point about wanting a more compact lilac in certain situations.

How does one of the bushes in the Bloomerang® series sound? It grows to about five feet tall and spreads about five feet, too. Not only does this cultivar meet your size requirements, it reblooms twice a year and is hardy in the Nashville Zone 7a.

If you grow it, won’t you let us know how it turns out? Happy gardening…

Therese Hutchinson

I am looking for the name of a giant lilac in our yard. It is 15-20’ tall, probably 16’ wide, purple elongated blooms and blooms later when the common lilacs are done blooming. We are zone 3.

Clare Groom

Hi Therese, can you upload a photo so we can take a look? Thanks!

Barbara Schroeder

I just bought the ivory silk Japanese Lilac the tag on it said it will grow 10-12’ft high and 6′ ft wide but in your post it says they’re larger

Are they really all that large or are some smaller

Hi Barbara, the sizes given above are the maximum you could expect in ideal growing conditions. Japanese tree lilacs do tend to grow pretty big. It’s possible that the one you purchased is a smaller variety.

Kayla

I have a question – I was reading your amazing article and found it very informative about lilacs. I am new to gardening and want to plant indoors because I do live in nyc and don’t really have access to a yard since I live in an apartment. I want to start growing my own plants and flowers, even foods, because lately we really don’t know what the hell they are feeding us nowadays. But aside from that I love me some lilacs. they make the house smell sooo amazing… literally girllllll I am drooling and plus it’s so calming… …  Read more »

Great questions Kayla, and welcome to the world of gardening! The beauty and fragrance of lilacs is so alluring. Dwarf varieties of lilacs can be grown in containers, which you can read more about in our guide, but they need to be exposed to winter temperatures outdoors in order to bloom.
