Old Forge is where the fun never stops, especially for families looking to cool off and get away. When you make your way through the Adirondack Mountains to the entrance of the Enchanted Forest Water Safari amusement park, you'll be greeted by the massive, unwavering Killermanjaro. Some go straight for the park's biggest water slide and slip down at 30 mph. Some prefer the wave pool or a lazy, lounging river ride. Either way, New York's largest water park is a great way to beat the heat.

What to expect

Water Safari: The highlight of this amusement park, easily, is feeling like your in a wet, splashy, life-sized version of shoots and ladders. There are hours of high-speed slides, kid's slides, pools, tube rides, lazy and not-so-lazy rivers. You can go up and down these with a buddy on a double-tube or fly solo. Snacks and refreshments are scattered throughout the park to keep you hydrated and happy as you slide the day away.

Enchanted Forest: The Enchanted Forest has been overshadowed by it's partner water rides, but for those looking for a break from the chlorine, the rides at the northeastern part of the park are classic carnival rides like the scrambler and Ferris wheel.

Calypso Cove: For turf group activities, Calypso Cove offers rock climbing, go-karts, arcade games and bumper boats. Nearby the park itself, you can also find a handful of mini-golf courses.

Opening day is June 17 and the park stays open through Sept. 7. The park is generally open from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the summer months. Opening and closing weeks have reduced hours.

Iconic Old Forge theme park bought by Florida company after 46 years of family ownership

After 46 years of ownership, the Noonan family in Old Forge has sold its Water Safari and related properties to Innovative Attraction Management of Windermere, Florida. The sale took place Friday, March 1, according to a news release sent by the new owners.

Originally opening in 1956 as the Enchanted Forest, Timothy Noonan purchased the theme park in 1977. He gradually expanded it into today’s Enchanted Forest Water Safari, New York state’s largest water theme park . In addition, the Noonans built the nearby Calypso’s Cove Family Fun Park featuring an arcade, mini-golf, and Go Karts. Also part of the sale: Old Forge Camping Resort, a year-round campground with cabins and cottages, RV and tent sites, and Water’s Edge Inn, a lakefront hotel with guest rooms and luxury suites.

“We are committed to preserving its great legacy developed over the last 4.5 decades by the Noonan Family, while enhancing the experience for guests of all ages,” said James Harhi, CEO for IAM a written statement. IAM specializes in theme parks, water parks, family entertainment centers, hotels and resorts, cruise ships, campgrounds, RV parks and similar assets.

Looking ahead

For Mike Farmer, head of tourism for Old Forge and town of Webb, the impacts of the sale remain to be seen.

“Water Safari is one of several key summer attractions our tourism department uses to market the town, along with McCauley Mountain , the Strand, VIEW, and others. The long-term impact will depend on IAM management continuing the high standards of customer service developed by the Noonan family. That’s what visitors take away and talk about, and that’s what brings them back year after year with new generations of their families,” he said.

When reached by phone on Tuesday, Katie Wojdyla of the Noonan family said she and her sister, Kelly Greene, will continue in their roles with the resort for the “foreseeable future.”

Greene, 55, who was the president of Enchanted Forest Water Safari, will serve as vice president. Wojdyla, 42, will continue to lead the marketing efforts. Wojdyla said her family felt that after 46 years, it was time to pass the torch.

Going forward, the name stays the same, and current staff retained at all the related businesses, said Wojdyla. 

“I’m sure there will be some change, but that has yet to be seen,” she said. “It’s the same safe, clean family fun everyone has grown to love over the years. We are all getting our bearings and we will start the real work.”

OLD FORGE, N.Y. -- Enchanted Forest Water Safari is under new ownership for the first time in almost 50 years. 

Innovative Attraction Management, out of Florida, now owns Enchanted Forest.

The new company will be implementing new procedures that limit outside food and beverages.

One of the biggest changes is the cooler policy.

Season-ticket holders and groups renting pavilions will be the only ones allowed to bring in food with no more than a 60-quart cooler. 

IAM Water Safari Park President Cathy Dunlap says people with dietary needs may be allowed to bring in food and drinks from outside, but IAM is still working on the language of the policy.

"A lot of the times they were in their cars and tailgating, so we are going to create a picnic area or two for them to eat in the parking lot," Dunlap said. 

Season passes are currently set for $99.

That gives you access to the park, 15-minute early entry and some discounts, but you may want to check out all the pricing at watersafari.com .

Dunlap says prices are subject to change.

"It may change come May, up a little bit, so now is the time to buy the season pass. And we still have the Siesta’s pass as well if you come after 3 (o’clock)."

They’ve also discontinued the Paul Bunyan Club Membership that allowed half-priced admission after purchasing the membership for a small fee.

"That’s an old program. We’re just running with the season’s pass, and the Siesta’s."

IAM is working on getting some new food vendors, and they’re keeping some traditional favorites.

As for the pricing of food?  

"You know we’re working on that pricing. As soon as we get the costs from our vendors. Right now, it’s around the same pricing as you would get in a fast food outside of the park," Dunlap said. 

Water Safari will be offering a new way to pay for items within the park.

"They’ll be able to change their cash into ‘Splash Cash.’ So, they can have a wristband, so they don’t have to carry cash around and lose it on the ride, or lose their wallet on a ride," Dunlap said. 

Enchanted Forest opens its doors for the season on June 12.
