We had a brilliant tour with Dawn on a very, very rainy night, Monday 9/11. The content of the tour was interesting, it gave me a very good overview of Salem’s history. The tour was more history than hauntings in my opinion. Dawn really brought the stories to life and was very generous with her time and encouraged the group to interact and ask questions.

Violet is a fantastic tour guide, and our group is extremely impressed by her. Violet spoke well, charming and is clearly knowledgeable. She was able to change a muggy dreary rainy night into very pleasantly memorable evening.

During a day trip to Salem, I participated in the History and Hauntings tour provided by Witch City Tours. This walking tour was so informative and beautiful! Our tour guide, Michael, knew quite a bit about the history of Salem and the witch trials. His summary of Salem's dark past piqued our interest into learning more about it, which led to the purchase of a history book in a local shop.

Carriage House Tour (May 2023)

Second Saturday Walking Tours are historic tours through Springfield, Massachusetts—organized by the Springfield Preservation Trust in partnership with the Springfield Museums. The 2023 season was sponsored by Mass Cultural Council and Springfield Cultural Council. The 2024 season is sponsored by Daboul Family Charitable Trust.

Per the name, the walking tours fall on the second Saturday of each month from April to October. Each tour is a deep dive into a specific aspect of Springfield's history, acting as an educational tool for the public to learn about Springfield's historically, architecturally, and culturally significant buildings. Meanwhile, increased exposure for Springfield's historic buildings—and the importance of protecting and preserving them—makes the tours an effective advocacy tool, as well.

Second Saturday Walking Tours are some of the most visible and well-attended events of the year, with 80-100+ attendees gathering for each tour.

If you want to learn more about the Second Saturday Walking Tours or talk with us about the potential for sponsoring or hosting a future tour, please email [email protected] .

Guy McLain led the Second Saturday walking tour on September 10 at 10:30am. The tour  departed from Springfield Museums and costed $5 if you were not an SPT or Springfield Museums member. Mark Twain described America in the late nineteenth century as a Gilded Age. A significant portion of the wealth created at this time was funneled into the arts. Museums, libraries, colleges, orchestras, and opera houses were established at a rate that seems astounding today. Springfield, just 25 miles north of Twain's home in Hartford, was a perfect example of the prosperity that he was describing. During the Gilded Age Springfield citizens founded most of the cultural institutions, monuments, and civic buildings that still serve the city today. Also influencing art and architecture at this time was the City Beautiful Movement. This walk explored around downtown Springfield and the legacy of this important era. The SPT walking tours this season were sponsored by the Springfield Cultural Council and Mass Cultural Council.

Groups led by SPT docents visited six graves of nineteenth-century Springfield residents, including philanthropist Primus Mason, chain store pioneer Lyman Besse, and other interesting residents of Springfield’s past. Costumed interpreters spoke at each stop about that person. Hour-long walking tours departed every fifteen minutes from the former chapel and seasonal refreshments were served.

90-acre Oak Grove Cemetery was opened for burials in 1882. The Springfield architectural firm of Richmond & Seabury designed the brownstone entrance arch and Romanesque hillside chapel, behind which bodies were stored in winter to await the thaw for burial.

in Partnership with the Mattoon Association

In the 1860s, the east side of Chestnut Street was lined with large estates. In 1870, William Mattoon, a wholesale grain dealer, purchased one to open a new street through the property and began selling lots. Over the next twenty years, local builders constructed attached brick houses, making Mattoon Street one of the few streets in Western Massachusetts lined with such urban structures. Forty years ago, the Springfield City Council and Mayor Frank Freeman established the first local historic district in Springfield to protect this unique area.

SPT and the  Mattoon Association  are both marked their 40 th  anniversary. They are volunteer, private, nonprofit organizations. SPT works to preserve Springfield’s built environment. The Association works to maintain its neighborhood and sponsors the annual Arts Festival.

The tour will open six grand Victorian-era homes dating from the 1880s and 1890s on Worthington Street, Florida Street, Ingersoll Grove, Clarendon Street, and Dartmouth Terrace–all within easy walking distance. McKnight is the largest, most intact, late-nineteenth-century, a wood-frame neighborhood in New England. Among its more than 800 houses are some of the most elegant homes in the Pioneer Valley. Join SPT to tour some of these lovely homes at this magical time of day and season.

The McKnight Twilight Tour generously sponsored by

Several noted local architects were involved in designing houses. Eugene Gardner and his son George worked on more than a dozen homes. Napoleon Russell and his partner Fred Knowlton designed numerous homes and also helped develop the area around Shefford and Caseland Streets. Max Westhoff, who designed the old Shriners Hospital and the Connecticut Valley History Museum, also worked on homes.

The neighborhood’s park-like setting, proximity to Springfield Hospital, and access to the trolley line encouraged development. Prior to the Great Depression, many houses were built in the popular Colonial Revival and Tudor Revival styles. Noted residents over the years include early aviatrix Maude Tait Moriarty, impressionist painter Harriet Randall Lumis, cork-centered baseball inventor Milton Reach, and Mass Mutual president Betrand Perry.

The Atwater Park Tour of Historic Homes generously sponsored by

The Springfield Preservation Trust House Tour will open homes south of Sumner Avenue. Colonial Revival and Shingle-style homes predominate in this area, developed by the Forest Park Heights Company headed by Lewis Newman.

The neighborhood’s park-like setting, proximity to Springfield Hospital, and access to the trolley line

encouraged development. (A remnant of the trolley tracks can be seen at Atwater Road and Crestwood Street).

Bellevue Avenue and Marengo Park were laid out as “Belmont Heights” by local builder and industrialist Diodate Swan. Mr. Swan died in 1895, and his children developed the area. Most houses were constructed after 1900 in the popular Colonial Revival and Tudor Revival styles. All three of his sons as well as his widow lived on Bellevue Avenue.

Homes featured today are Colonial Revival style, which began after the Centennial Exposition of 1876 sparked renewed interest in the country’s colonial past. It soon became the most popular style in the East. Such houses were more symmetrical than Victorian houses and featured classically inspired decoration.

UK Travel Planning Guide: the FAQs

🏥 Should I buy UK travel insurance?

Absolutely yes. Basic coverage is not expensive, and as a visitor you are NOT covered under the NHS. Compare policies and prices with Travel Insurance Master here , a big name in the travel insurance business, and cross that off your list.

🔌 Do I need travel adapters for the UK?

Yes, you do, otherwise you won’t be able to plug in your electronics/phone/lifelines. I recommend this one , which is all-in-one so you can use it in other countries.

🚗 What do I need to drive in the UK?

The first thing you need to check out if you’re planning on renting a car in the UK is this guide to driving in the UK for visitors – the roads, signs, and driving experience will likely not be what you’re used to and it’s essential to prepare yourself to stay safe and aware.

🛌 What’s the best way to book hotels in the UK?

For UK hotels, Booking is the best site as it offers free cancellation on many properties. If you want an apartment, I always recommend VRBO over AirBnb.

📳 Will my phone work in the UK?

Yes – if you set it up right. Check out my guide on making your foreign phone work in the UK to ensure that you get the type of service you need.

🚿 Can I drink the water in the UK?

Yes, UK water is great and perfectly safe. But drink out of taps in any kitchen or use water fountains. Double check before drinking out of the taps in hotel bathrooms, though, as they may be on a different system. London water is safe to drink .

ITALIAN GUIDED WALKING TOURS OPERATED BY LOCALS

Welcome to walk about italy: experts in walking tours.

I’m Gianni Stanghellini, owner and guide at Walk About Italy. I am a Ph.D. geologist with over two decades of experience in the realm of guided walking tours in Italy. For the past 22 years, I’ve dedicated myself to crafting remarkable journeys through this enchanting country. Hailing from Siena, a captivating medieval town nestled in the heart of Tuscany, Italy, I remain firmly rooted here. The allure of this exquisite place has held me steadfast, and it’s from here that I continue to operate and shape unforgettable experiences.

Walk About Italy: Exploring Tuscany and Beyond

At Walk About Italy, our focus is on select regions, ensuring the pinnacle of Italy’s guided walking tours: Tuscany , the Amalfi Coast , Sicily , Umbria, Assisi & Le Marche , the Cinque Terre , Italian Alps & Dolomites and The Italian Lakes These seven destinations embody the rich tapestry of Italian beauty, each unique and awe-inspiring in its own right, beckoning to be explored.

A Boutique Enterprise Embracing Local Essence

Central to our ethos, we exclusively enlist local guides and drivers. Moreover, we gravitate toward intimate, family-owned restaurants and venture to small farms, offering you the opportunity to engage with the very heart of Italy’s agrarian heritage. Our commitment to fostering authentic connections means we facilitate interactions with locals at every turn.

In the words of G.K. Chesterton, “ The traveler sees what he sees; the tourist sees what he has come to see. ” Here at Walk About Italy, we invite you to transcend the role of a mere tourist, and instead, become an astute traveler, delving into the true essence of Italy.

Umbria, Assisi & Le Marche Marvels

Umbria & Le Marche are really off-the-beaten-path. Although Assisi is well known because of Saint Francis, the area remains very genuine. Food and wines are superb here. The tour starts in the medieval town of Orvieto, one hour train ride from Rome. Continues to the small towns of Trevi, Montefalco and Bevagna and ends up in the Le Marche green countryside of Urbino, on the Adriatic sea.

CINQUE TERRE & PORTOFINO off-the-beaten-path

Italian alps & dolomites: the easy way.

Have you always dreamt of walking the Italian Alps and the Dolomites but you didn’t feel fit enough for it? We have planned the trip for you. Our hikes are very doable. No big climbs. No fear of heights on our walks. But a lot of fun though.

ROMANTIC ITALIAN LAKES

Step into romance, wander through enchanting landscapes, and embrace the allure of our Romantic Italian Lakes Walking Tour – where every step is a dance and every view a love letter to the heart of Italy

Cinque Terre September 2023 This Cinque Terre 7 day walking tour was absolutely amazing! It’s worth every cent. Amazing walks, breathtaking scenery, scrumptious Italian food and wine. So well organized! This was my 5th trip with Walk About Italy.

Tuscany has my heart! This was a trip dreams are made of. I have always wanted to see Tuscany but I am not into touristy type trips. I was a little skeptical of this tour but booked it anyway. I was blown away….It exceeded my expectations. Our guides Daniele and Chiara were a JOY to be with. They shared their countryside with us and they shared themselves. Beautiful souls. For me the hiking was wonderful and I would have done more…but beware this is definitely more of a hiking than walking tour. The food was wonderful and the wine amazing! I highly recommend. I can’t wait to try another tour.

A fantastic, boutique walking tour. Ermes and Gianni were great guides who were very accommodating and supportive; Hotels were in great location, clean and friendly staff. Breakfast was great. Great food. The ability to accommodate for individuals food requirements was great. Ermes and Gianni were fantastic guides. They complemented each other with their guiding and jokes etc. We would recommend this tour to others.

I recently embarked on a captivating tour through the picturesque regions of Umbria and the Marche in Italy. Our itinerary included enchanting stops in Montefalco, Assisi, Spello, Urbino, and the stunning Adriatic coastline. Our experienced guides, Federico and Roberto, made the journey even more engaging. Gianni, the owner of Walk About Italy, joined our group for three days, infusing a personal touch into the experience. This adventure was genuinely extraordinary, and I can’t recommend it enough!

Nomadic Matt: Travel Cheaper, Longer, Better

The Best Walking Tours of New York City

People crossing a busy street in bustling NYC, USA with cars all around

New York City has tons of walking tour companies. There are free tours, food tours, neighborhood tours, and expensive private walking tours. New York has a walking tour for everyone’s needs and interests!

Personally, I love walking tours. I think they’re a wonderful way to see a city, get your bearings, and learn about where you are from a local expert. After all, why visit a place if you don’t want to learn about it?

To help you decide what tours to take while you’re exploring the Big Apple, I decided to sample a big chunk of the city’s historical walking tour companies in order to find the best ones. While it took a toll on my feet (I definitely got my steps in!), I learned a lot about NYC history!

Here’s a review of the best walking tours in New York City:

Best Overall Tour

The Take Walks walking tour company logo

Take Walks specializes in behind the scenes access that other tours don’t offer. Their Met tour is hours of educational fun and I especially enjoyed their Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island tour ( read my full review here ). I love Walks tours because they take you behind the scenes and give you insider access you won’t get anywhere else. They always have top-notch expert guides and offer the only official tour of Grand Central Terminal , an absolute must-see in the city!

They are my FAVORITE tour company in the city. Any of their tours will be great!

Best Free Tour

Tours By Foot logo

Tours by Foot

These free tours are offered throughout the city by licensed guides. The company really shines in its diverse catalog — there’s a tour for everyone. They add a bit of quirky history to each tour and, since there’s no set script, each tour differs based on your guide. (My SoHo tour guide waxed poetic on gentrification.) Just make sure to sign up in advance and be sure to tip your guide at the end!

In addition to these two awesome tour companies, New York has over a dozen other insightful, educational, and delicious tours in the city. Here are my top suggestions:

1. Big Apple Greeter

Big Apple Greeter was founded in 1992 and connects visitors with local residents who love sharing their city. These aren’t professional guides, just locals showing you their favorite spots. I highly recommend first-time visitors take a tour with them. Tours usually last 2-4 hours.

As you can imagine, this is a pretty popular service. Spots fill up fast, especially in the high season (April-October), so I recommend putting in a request as soon as you know when you’ll arrive in New York. You’ll meet your greeter on your first day, with the next two days as backups. They don’t accept reservations within 10 days of your desired date (and usually they’re booked out weeks ahead of time) so make sure to book in advance! Meeting a greeter is free of charge and there is a no-tipping policy. However, please consider making a donation to help this service continue.

2. Explore the Real Brooklyn

Friend and fellow travel writer Dani Heinrich runs this off-the-beaten-path tour around Brooklyn. She’s a diehard Brooklynite and loves taking people around the city to show them there’s a lot more to NYC than just Manhattan. She has been leading these tours for years and will take you all over Brooklyn (so be prepared to walk, though you’ll also take the subway a couple of times to cover larger distances).

You’ll get to see five different neighborhoods over the course of this five-hour tour. You’ll admire the iconic Manhattan skyline from the Brooklyn Heights (a view you can’t get if you never leave Manhattan!), stroll amongst the classic Brooklyn brownstones of historic Cobble Hill, take in the hipster scene of Williamsburg, learn about a Jewish Orthodox community in South Williamsburg, and enjoy the street art, vintage shops, and hidden bars of industrial, artsy Bushwick.

Tours from $55 USD per person (currently only private group tours are available).

3. Central Park Conservancy Tour

Ever wanted to learn more about the iconic Central Park? Well, now you can. The Central Park Conservancy offers a ton of different tours that highlight various features of the park. Not only do you get to walk around the park on a beautiful day, but you’ll learn about what you’re looking at too!

Their Iconic Views of Central Park Tour is their most popular as it covers landmarks like the Mall, Sheep’s Meadow, and Bethesda Terrace. There are bunch of other tours too, including guided nature hikes, birding tours, family-friendly tours, tours that focus on the indigenous history of the park, and more. There are also seasonal tours, like a cherry blossom tour when they’re in season and a Halloween-themed tour in October. Most tours usually last 90 minutes, but some of the hiking tours last several hours. You can purchase tickets online in advance.

Tours from $33 USD.

4. NiteTables Experiences

NiteTables Experiences offers guided tours focused on New York City’s nightlife, where you’ll get to check out popular bars, clubs, or speakeasies on a hassle-free night out. Their tours are designed for small groups, led by knowledgeable guides who highlight the best spots and offer insider tips on the city’s vibrant nightlife scene.

They have a bunch of different tours, but as a big fan of Prohibition-style bars , my personal favorite is their Speakeasy & Prohibition History Tour . On the tour, you visit three historical bars, pubs, and speakeasies while learning about the Gilded Age and the Prohibition Era. I think their tours are especially great if you’re a solo traveler looking to enjoy New York’s nightlife with a group.

5. Big Onion Walking Tours

This is one of the biggest walking tour companies in New York. They’ve been running tours since 1991, using history Ph.D. candidates as tour guides (so every guide is super knowledgeable). They run over 30 tours in 20 different NYC neighborhoods. Some of their most popular neighborhood tours include their East Village History Tour and their Historic Harlem Tour . They also offer tours that do deep dives into specific time periods, like their Revolutionary War tour. Tours don’t run every day, so be sure to check their schedule to see what’s running during your trip.

I took their Prohibition walking tour. I liked my guide, and she provided a lot of historical information, but much of it wasn’t directly related to Prohibition. While that was a personal bummer (I’m a sucker for anything Jazz Age!), I still really liked the tour and would recommend the company.

Tours from $30 USD ($20 for students and seniors).

6. Bowery Boys Walks

The Bowery Boys started off as a podcast back in 2007, focusing on the unique history of the Big Apple. Since then, they’ve branched out and created their own walking tours based on some of their most popular episodes and topics. They offer over a dozen distinct tours that cover specific areas around the city as well as different historical periods.

Their most popular tours are the Gilded Age Mansions tour (which is super interesting!) and the Taste of Chinatown tour. Both of these run the most regularly, but be sure to check their calendar to see what tours are offered during your visit. They have in-depth tours covering specific topics, such as their newspaper history tour, historic hotels of Midtown Manhattan, and a Brooklyn Gilded Age tour. Their tours generally last around two hours. Be sure to book in advance since there is limited space.

Tours from $40 USD.

7. Honorable Mention: Get Your Guide

Get Your Guide is a massive online platform for finding all kinds of fun activities, including walking tours, bike tours, and food tours. Whenever I’m in a new city, I check their app to see what new activities I can find. There is really something for every interest and budget, and booking is a breeze. I can’t recommend them enough!

Some suggested tours worth checking out are:

  • Chinatown & Little Italy Food Tour
  • MoMA Before Hours Guided Tour
  • The Wall Street Experience
  • Catacombs by Candlelight

A fresh slice of pizza from a pizza place in busy New York City, USA

Devour Tours is my go-to food tour company as they always have amazing itineraries and use expert local guides. In NYC, they currently have two epic tours on offer. Their Ultimate Greenwich Village tour lasts three hours and includes a filling 9 stops at a handful of family-run eateries around this iconic bohemian neighborhood.

Their Dumplings, Delis, & History tour explores the Lower East Side, including a visit to the oldest and most famous deli in the city!

Other suggested food tour companies to check out are:

  • Scott’s Pizza Tours
  • Foods of NY
  • Famous Fat Dave’s Five Borough Eating Tour

No matter what company you tour with on this list, you’ll learn a lot, have fun, and discover parts of NYC with these walking tours you wouldn’t have found otherwise. Nothing can replace an insider’s tour of a city! Try a couple over the course of your visit. (Again, my favorite is Take Walks but any company on this list will be phenomenal!)

British Isles ~ England & Scotland

Cotswolds, lake district, scottish highlands, hebrides islands, edinburgh.

August 6 – 16, 2023 • 11 Days • $6250

Come walk with us over stone bridges and past thatch-roofed cottages in the Cotswolds; through the green, rolling hills and stone-fenced pastures of Beatrix Potter’s beloved Lake District; over heather-clad hills and across Scottish seas to the historic, windswept Isle of Iona; and along the streets of charming Edinburgh, one of our favorite walking cities on the planet!

England and Scotland have long been favorite destinations with Americans. Over the years, no other WAI Adventure has enticed more travelers abroad than our trips to what Shakespeare referred to as “this scepter’d isle” (Richard II). Something about the bucolic panoramas, historic sites, traditional way of life, and familiar names seems to strike a nerve in the heart of the American traveler.  So much of who we are as a nation is tied to Great Britain—we share a similar system of law and government, a common language (sort of), parallel cultures; in short, an inextricably linked heritage.

We invite you to join us in the summer of 2023 as we explore the countries that gave us Shakespeare and Robert Louis Stevenson, Henry VIII and Robert the Bruce, Peter Rabbit and Alice in Wonderland! Come walk with us over stone bridges and past thatch-roofed houses in the Cotswolds; through the green, rolling hills and stone-fenced pastures of Beatrix Potter’s beloved Lake District; over heather-clad hills and across Scottish seas to the historic, windswept Isle of Iona; and along the streets of charming Edinburgh.

Dates for this British Isles walking adventure in England & Scotland are linked to the incomparable Edinburgh Military Tattoo. The oddly named Tattoo is an extravaganza of the performing arts, initially only drum, bugle, and bagpipes, hence the “military” label. Now it’s been expanded to include a dizzying array of performances from all points of the compass, and takes place each August as part of the Edinburgh Art Festival.

A significant bonus on this carefully orchestrated itinerary is zero 1-night stays. We stay in each hotel at least 2 nights!

  • All land travel as outlined
  • Superior tourist-class or better hotel accommodations
  • Ferry roundtrip from Oban to Isle of Mull
  • Ferry roundtrip from Isle of Mull to Isle of Iona
  • 15 meals: all breakfasts and 5 dinners as denoted (BD)
  • 8 walk routes as listed
  • Walking fees for those collecting IVV Credit
  • WAI guide service throughout (2 guides)
  • Cultural & historical expertise of national guides throughout
  • All tipping for guides, coach drivers, and group meals
  • Pricing is based on double occupancy; a limited number of single rooms are available for a supplement of $1,700

Activities/Visits to:

  • Clotted cream tea – Chipping Campden, England
  • Cruises on Lake Windermere – Lake District, England
  • Iona Abbey – Scotland
  • Stirling Castle – Scotland
  • Edinburgh Military Tattoo – Scotland
  • 48-hour hop-on-hop-off bus pass – Edinburgh, Scotland
  • More fun and interesting stops than we can list!

Optional Excursion:

  • Beatrix Potter’s house in Hill Top – Lake District, England (DAY 5)

We rendezvous in merry ole England today at a hotel in the heart of Shakespeare’s home town – Stratford-Upon-Avon! Birmingham is the closest airport – about a 30-minute taxi ride away.

Early arrivals can find a host of activities to enjoy in town, including a club-hosted walk connecting many of Stratford-Upon-Avon’s points of interest.

Be sure to return in time for this evening’s Welcome Orientation at 6 pm, followed by dinner.

Badby English Countryside Walk – 5 km, rated 2B

A few miles east of Stratford-Upon-Avon is the small, rural community of Badby. A lovely trail here through woods, over stiles, through kissing gates, and across meadows takes us to a charming country chapel with connections to the George Washington family.

A no-host picnic lunch is followed by a rest stop at Fawsley Manor, venerable home of nobility in centuries past.

At walk’s end, we return to our home in Stratford-Upon-Avon for the second night of a three-night stay.

The late afternoon and evening are free to explore, or consider the club walk in Stratford-Upon-Avon. Opportunities to attend a play in one of the Shakespearean theaters will be announced as schedules become available.

Cotswolds Hill & Dale Walk – 7 km, rated 2B

We spend today in the Cotswolds, an area renowned for its honey-colored limestone buildings, thatch-roofed homes, and graceful stone bridges arching across lazy, wandering streams. Trekking trails abound, and we are pleased to present a delightful route through the Cotswold countryside led by local walking friends.

Following our Cotswolds walk, we dilly dally in a couple of cute-as-a-button towns with the uniquely British names of Bourton-on-the-Water and Chipping Campden.

The afternoon highlight is a proper cream tea in Chipping Campden, a delicious southern English novelty not available as we move north.

Windermere Lakeside Stroll – 8 km, rated 1B

We leave Stratford today and continue our Adventure in the beautiful Lake Country of northern England.

The quaint village of Grasmere was home to poet laureate William Wordsworth. It sits on the shore of Lake Grasmere and is our base to explore the Lake District.

Just a few miles south, Lake Windermere is England’s largest lake, and a pleasant walk along its idyllic shores, punctuated by three short lake cruises, provides this afternoon’s introduction to the Lake Country.

Bowness & Beatrix Lake Country Walk – 10 km, rated 3B

A brief morning ferry ride takes us back across Lake Windermere to start today’s hike. Our route climbs along country lanes and through tiny communities to the village of Hill Top, home of beloved children’s author Beatrix Potter.

From Hill Top, we return to Lake Windermere through more pastoral panoramas, winding past stone fences and among groups of complacently grazing sheep.

We cross the lake again reluctantly, leaving with the sense that we’ve discovered a place where time stands still.

Optional Beatrix Potter’s Home & Garden Visit : A short self-guided tour (well-informed docents are on hand) through the home and garden of celebrated children’s author Beatrix Potter’s will be available mid-walk. After the visit, travelers will finish the walk or are welcome to ride the easy-to-use public transport system to return to Bowness-On-Windermere. Estimated price: $25

Lake Grasmere Walk – 6 km, rated 1B

This morning’s walk circles Lake Grasmere, and offers the trademark serenity that has long drawn writers and poets like Wordsworth. Wordsworth was England’s Poet Laureate during the later years of his life, but earlier earned a reputation as one of the “Lake Poets” while living with his sister Dorothy in Dove Cottage, which we pass during the walk.

Leaving the Lake District, we head north for Scotland and a two-night stay in Oban, the “Gateway to the Isles”, situated directly on the Firth of Lorn.

An excursion to the Hebrides Island of Mull forms the centerpiece of today’s activities.

After a ferry crossing, we motor through remote terrain in the shadow of the volcanic peak, Ben More.

From the tiny hamlet of Fionnphort, a pedestrian ferry takes us to the historic, windswept Isle of Iona —6th century birthplace of Christianity in Scotland. Often attacked by marauding Vikings attracted by the riches of the abbey, the isle offers present-day explorers the singular sensation of wandering this beautiful, isolated corner of the Hebrides, pondering life on the edge of Scotland 1500 years ago.

Glencoe Highlands Walk – 5 km, rated 2B

Glencoe is a famous valley and village connected with one of the most infamous acts of treachery in the long history of conflict between the British crown and Gaelic residents of the British Isles. It also happens to offer some of the most stunning highland panoramas in Scotland. During our walk through the breathtaking vistas of the glen, our guide shares the tragic story of the massacre perpetrated here in 1692.

From Glencoe, we continue east to Stirling Castle to retrace the drama of the centuries-long struggle between the Scots and the English. The castle played a key role both in the story of Scottish monarchy and during the Wars of Independence, when heroics by William Wallace (Braveheart), Robert the Bruce, and many others became forever immortalized.

We continue this evening to Edinburgh for the first night of a three-night stay.

Historic Edinburgh Trail – 10 km, rated 2A

Positioned on a strategic rock, Edinburgh Castle has been used as a fortress since the 7th century, bearing the brunt of this city’s turbulent history.

Our all-day walk in fascinating Edinburgh features the Castle; the Palace of Holyroodhouse; and the Royal Mile, including the John Knox House, Deacon Brodie’s Tavern, Greyfriars Bobby, and a host of other only-in-Edinburgh attractions (admissions not included)!

After dinner on your own this evening, we rendezvous to attend the world-famous Edinburgh Military Tattoo, an unforgettable, outdoor cornucopia of performing arts presented on the esplanade of Edinburgh Castle.

Arthur’s Seat Walk – 6 km, rated 3C

Enjoy this “bonus day” to explore Edinburgh using the 48-hour hop-on-hop-off bus pass that you received at the beginning of yesterday’s activities. This is a fun and efficient way to get around Edinburgh – returning to highlights you didn’t have time to visit during the walk and exploring new corners of the fascinating city.

We are here during the renowned Edinburgh Art Festival, and there is always an abundance of attractions available simply by strolling the Royal Mile. A bonus hike to Arthur’s Seat is also available today.

Later this evening, we compare notes, swap stories, and reminisce about this English and Scottish Adventure at our Farewell Dinner.

Our travels together in Great Britain end this morning. We return home with new walking friends, fond memories of our adventures, and a greater appreciation of the history, culture, and scenery of the British Isles!

With help from local experts and walking guides, these itineraries are hand-crafted with extensive on-site planning by WAI tour planners.

When planning Classic Curated Tours, our objective is to capture the essence of a destination–the history, culture, and natural wonders unique to that part of the world. We then build activities and walks that take us inside these characteristics.

Yes, these tours are educational, but they are also interactive and immersive; walking gets us off the bus and penetrates local cultures to not only see but touch, smell, and feel these special spaces.

Along the way, local walking guides amplify the experience by sharing insights into the magic of that particular location.

We generally walk at a pace of 2 to 3 miles per hour. Several walks on this trip are oriented more towards education, and therefore take longer due to stops for guide commentary. Nature walks, on the other hand, generally continue at a steadier pace because we’re stopping less to talk.

In most cases, we are not “strolling.” We are walking at a relaxed but steady pace. Your experience will be significantly affected by your level of physical fitness. If not walking regularly at home, we strongly recommend that you make a priority of “training” beforehand to both enjoy the trip and avoid medical issues due to overexertion. If you have questions about your ability to participate, please contact our office at [email protected] .

We have adopted a walk difficulty rating system which contains a numeric indicator for trail incline and an alpha indicator for trail terrain. The explanation for this system is presented on the table below:

1. Minimal hills or stair climbing. Cumulative elevation gain: <200 feet. 2. Some moderate hills and stair climbing. Cumulative elevation gain: 200-1000 feet. 3. Some significant hill or stair climbing. Cumulative elevation gain: 1000-2000 feet.

A. Almost entirely on pavement. B. A significant part of the route is on well-groomed trails with very few obstacles. C. A significant part of the route is on somewhat difficult terrain (rocky / rooted paths or soft sand).

This Adventure officially starts in Stratford-upon-Avon, England (closest airport is Birmingham Airport; airport code BHX) and finishes in Edinburgh, Scotland (closest airport is Edinburgh Airport; airport code EDI).

Transfers from the airport to our hotel in Stratford-upon-Avon and from our final hotel in Edinburgh to the Edinburgh Airport are not included in the tour price.

We recommend that you contact Laura Pfahler, the travel agent we work with, to help book your flight arrangements.

Details about flight arrangements and recommended travel agent contact information will be provided by email after you register for the Adventure. Please do not book your airfare prior to receiving these flight details from us !

WAI believes strongly in the importance of travel insurance for financial and medical protection from any number of unforeseen circumstances that can arise before departure or during your Adventure. Many travel insurance providers are available for you to consider. Laura Pfahler and Sharon Mitchell of World Travel Inc. are travel agents who provides air travel and insurance services to many WAI travelers.

As always, do some shopping to ensure you are getting the best value. Using the  SquareMouth.com  website can be a good way to compare pricing.

Other options include:

Allianz Betins Travel Guard Travel Insured International

NOTE: We suggest purchasing from a reputable, well-established insurance company (avoid buying insurance from an unknown company found only online). Travelers interested in purchasing “cancel for any reason” insurance coverage should be careful to check pricing and terms BEFORE they register for a tour. Recent changes in the international travel landscape has caused changes in the policies of some insurance companies, and made the purchase of this particular type of policy even more time-sensitive.

Walking Adventures International reserves the right to cancel this tour departure with fewer than 12 participants, in which case registered participants will receive a 100% refund of payments received.

This refund policy contains one exclusion. Many suppliers require non-refundable deposits as a condition of booking services. Though it is rare, unforeseen circumstances can force us to cancel a tour. In cases where supplier’s non-refundable policies are imposed, WAI attempts to retrieve as much of these deposits as possible but cannot guarantee a 100% refund. In cases where full refunds cannot be obtained for a cancelled tour, we will do our best to transfer unrefunded money as traveler credits to be applied to a future tour to that destination.

WAI has relaxed our policies and currently require no mitigation procedures (current WAI Wellness on Tour Policy ). However, Walking Adventures International policy includes endeavoring to comply with any COVID-19 policies in place in the destinations through which we travel.

The governments of England and Scotland have now dropped all COVID-19-related restrictions. As of the date of this writing (August 27, 2022) any remaining domestic restrictions have been removed.

We are not currently aware of any COVID-19 policies or restrictions that will impact this tour in England and Scotland.

WAI will update travelers upon learning of any changes.

Winner of the 2024 Yale Library Walking Tour awarded a private study room in Bass Library

Woman with blonde hair, jean jacket and glasses poses holding top of large gold key that reads "Yale." Across the counter a young woman with long dark hair and wire glasses holds the other end of the key.

To launch the new academic year, incoming Yale College students were invited to take the Yale Library Walking Tour. The program, sponsored by Bass Library, helps students learn about the many libraries in the Yale Library system. As an added bonus, participating students have the chance to win a private study room in Bass Library for the fall semester.

Elynn An, ’28, Saybrook College, was this year’s prizewinner. Kelly Marie Blanchat, Undergraduate Teaching and Outreach Librarian, presented An with the  coveted “key” to the study room door. “I was very excited about winning,” An said. “I have a couple of difficult classes, so the private study room is perfect for this!”

During the August program, students chose one of two tour options: a librarian-guided walking tour or a self-guided tour.

The librarian-guided tour began in Sterling Memorial for visits to collections and spaces, including the Yale Film Archive, the Irving S. Gilmore Music Library, the Franke Family Digital Humanities Lab, and Bass Library. Students had a chance to learn about the study areas available to them in each location—including the newly renovated L&B Room.

“My college advisor, Pauline Martin, was the one to introduce me to the Walking Tour,” An said. Martin is Head of Arts Library Access Services. “I took her advice and decided to complete the tour with a few of my friends during orientation week. We visited eight libraries, and it was really fun. Honestly,” she added, “without this, I probably would have never taken the time to visit the libraries, and it was very worth it. Bass is still probably my favorite because it’s in a great location and has so many study spaces—the vibes are just perfect for studying or reading a book.”

Students who opted for a self-guided tour carried a booklet, available at the library service desks, that contained a detailed map with all library locations and descriptions. Those students who visited at least eight libraries—and collected stickers for their booklets at each location—entered the raffle to win the private study room.

Blanchat created the tour concept. She worked closely with Sidney Hirschman, Rollins Fellow at the Office of the University Printer, in the planning and development of the program. Assisting library staff members included Gwyneth Crowley, Emily Horning, and Jennifer Snow.

Take a Tour of Grand Rapids’ Ghostly History

As Halloween draws near, Grand Rapids comes alive (or is that undead?) with terrifying haunted houses, spooky corn mazes and other eerie entertainment . This is the season when the veil separating this world from the next is at its thinnest, and local legends of apparitions wandering city streets and bedeviling their old homesteads make us more aware of things that go bump in the night.

It's the perfect time to explore our haunted hot spots and learn the chilling stories behind them. But it’s not the only time – the tour operators below are fiendishly happy to guide you through the city’s ghostly history all year-round!

Explore the haunting legends of Grand Rapids during Halloween and throughout the year with expert-guided ghost tours.

Photo by Bryan Esler for Experience GR

Paranormal Michigan

Ghosts of Grand Rapids Tours by  Paranormal Michigan  offer the unique twist of being hosted by paranormal researchers who literally wrote the book on hauntings in the city.

Led by  Ghosts of Grand Rapids  authors Nicole Bray and Robert Du Shane, along with A Haunted History of Grand Rapids author Julie Rathsack, Paranormal Michigan offers private Haunted History tours, along with two public tours in Grand Rapids: one explores a western route through  downtown  (Monroe Center Street NW area) while the other follows an eastern route through the  Heritage Hill  neighborhood.

Both routes cover various paranormal activity reports occurring on the streets, sidewalks, and in historic buildings that have been in Grand Rapids for generations. The western tour draws from such local lore as:

  • A ghost cat roaming the hallways of an apartment building on Ionia Avenue NW.
  • Comic books flying from their shelves in a comic book shop near Rosa Parks Circle.
  • A volatile romance in 1907 that supposedly ended in death by a wooden leg in a building near the corner of Ionia Avenue NW and Fountain Street NE.
  • Apparitions peeking through the curtains on the stage of a popular theater and unnerving growling noises heard by actors on the third floor.
  • The ghost of an old maid who enjoys indulging in a few cigarettes in the historic lobby of a well-known Grand Rapids hotel.
  • Fallen soldiers returning to war memorials to honor their departed comrades.
  • The ghost of a 14-year-old boy named Mortimer who holds a degree in causing shenanigans throughout a string of connected buildings near the intersection of Fulton Street East and Division Avenue South.

You may also hear the occasional spirit-adjacent historical fact about the. For example: did you know that Harry Houdini performed in Grand Rapids several times? In one memorable show, he escaped from a straitjacket while dangling upside down from the fifth floor of a building in less than two minutes in front of a crowd of roughly 2,000 people in 1916.

On the other side of town, the Heritage Hill experience includes “more gruesome tales of macabre history and even spookier ghosts,” according to Rathsack, who leads the eastern tour route. Rathsack is intimately familiar with the haunted happenings of various Heritage Hill locations, including the Sweet House, where she has conducted actual overnight paranormal investigations and knows firsthand what happens in the shadows. On this tour, you’ll hear a variety of stories, from a body boiling to death in a bathtub and “Dead Man’s Row,” where there were once nine funeral homes within a two-block radius, to the “Living Skeleton” - a 6’2”, 90-pound man who gained fame by traveling around the world with the circus and died in his downtown Grand Rapids home. Unlike other tours, actual photographs are occasionally shown to reinforce the tales.

Both tours begin and end at the  Grand Rapids Public Library , cover just over one mile, and take approximately two hours – so wear your walking shoes and keep the weather in mind since the tours are completely outside. Ghosts of Grand Rapids Tours are a fun, albeit goosebump-inducing, opportunity to learn about the mysterious happenings of the city.

Grand Rapids Running Tours

Normally you run away from ghosts, but with  Grand Rapids Running Tours  , you run towards them.

Offering more than 80 unique moving tours, founder and Chief Tour Ambassador Caroline Cook has been encouraging people to “burn while you learn” throughout the 1,500 or so tours she has personally facilitated since establishing Grand Rapids Running Tours in 2013. Some of her most popular fall tours include:

  • Fulton Street Graveyard : shares stories about the fascinating lives of the first generation of Grand Rapids settlers while visiting the first and oldest public graveyard in Grand Rapids, which was established in 1838.
  • Grand Rapids Most Haunted : visits iconic locations where there have been multiple paranormal sightings and unusual activity while answering the questions: “Did someone suffer a tragic death here?” and “Is this story legend or real?”
  • Heritage Hill Hauntings : explores the historic neighborhood and the many stories of ghostly activity therein.
  • Saints & Spirits : explores the history of a piece of property that used to be a dairy farm, a proper estate, a business college, and is now Aquinas College, while investigating various landmarks on campus tied to superstitious traditions.

In these tours, attendees try to answer questions like, “Is the ghost of Frank D. McKay haunting the tower that bears his name?”, “Where is Haunted Hotel Row?”, “Why are old homes so susceptible to hauntings?”, and “Which downtown church is haunted by Edythe?”

All tours, which generally last 60-90 minutes and take place rain or shine, can be scheduled as a run, walk, or step-on bus tour, and meet in the lobby of the  JW Marriott Grand Rapids   (unless otherwise noted).

If you’re unable to make a tour, but still want to experience the fun of Grand Rapids’ history, Grand Rapids Running Tours uniquely offers half of its tours, like Grand Rapids Most Haunted and Fulton Street Graveyard, as virtual tours in presentation format via video call or in-person.

Tours Around Michigan's Ghost Tour provides an informative and eerie journey through Grand Rapids' historical and haunted locations.

Tours Around Michigan

The  Tours Around Michigan   team ultimately strives to inspire people to learn more about Grand Rapids through adventures and explorations, and their Ghost Tour Grand Rapids is the perfect way to start since it effectively blends history with spooky stories.

Tours Around Michigan constantly updates the tour’s content and locations by engaging with the local community to find active hauntings and research new stories. For example, there’s one business manager who routinely visits with tour groups to share his latest ghostly encounters around his establishment. Other common locations include hotels, restaurants, the  Grand Rapids Public Library  , and  St. Cecilia Music Center  .

While you enjoy iconic sights and learn about Grand Rapids’ history on this tour side-by-side with Tours Around Michigan’s mascot, #CreepyDollAmanda, you’ll hear stories handed down through generations set in buildings passed during the experience, such as:

  • A murdered woman who terrifies the people working in her building.
  • The tale of an ill-mannered janitor still cleaning up in the afterlife.
  • A Grand Rapids pioneer determined to make sure he is talked about for years to come.

While it doesn’t happen every time, there are occasions when spirits even join the fun. An early Grand Rapids settler named Amos, for example, will sometimes make himself and his bushy mustache and happy energy known to people who are sensitive to ghosts.

Tours occur daily and last about two hours while covering approximately two miles. Each tour begins at Lyon Square (296 Lyon Street NW, Grand Rapids) where Lyon Street meets the Grand River behind the  Amway Grand Plaza Hotel  . While you can join public tours, private and customizable tours are also available, like combining ghost stories or other topics with beer, wine, or distillery/cocktail tastings in haunted restaurants.

Tours Around Michigan also prioritizes accessibility by offering tours that are wheelchair and stroller friendly, pet friendly (must be on a leash or in a carrier, able to stay quiet during the tour, and feel comfortable around downtown activity) and that welcome sign language and spoken language interpreters, who can join tours for free.

GR Haunted Tour

Betka-Pope Productions , a Grand Rapids company that works to provide new opportunities to local artists, invites guests to uncover ghost stories, urban legends, and paranormal secrets hidden in the shadows of Downtown Grand Rapids on a “wickedly funny, hauntingly memorable” walking tour.

The GR Haunted Tour lasts about two hours and covers roughly 1.5 square miles. It takes place within Downtown’s Outdoor Refreshment Area, so you can enjoy adult beverages purchased from participating businesses during your stroll. The tour is ADA-accessible, just let Betka-Pope know ahead of time if you need accommodations.

You can book a private GR Haunted Tour for two to 25 participants any time of the year. Special public tours are offered in October – unfortunately, they’re already sold out for 2024, but Betka-Pope offers two other ways to get into the spirit of the season: The Fourth Annual Halloween Bash on Oct. 6 at Fulton Street Farmers Market and an After(Life) Party at The Pyramid Scheme Oct. 26.

Walking Ghost Stories

Student artists, animators and sound designers from downtown GR’s Kendall College of Art and Design at Ferris State University created this self-guided tour exploring the city center’s creepiest ghost encounters. Walking Ghost Stories is available via the PocketSights app, available for download on the Apple Store and Google Play .

You’ll start the tour at Kendall College and make your way to 20 additional downtown landmarks, accompanied by audio and video clips that convey the scary stories surrounding each location. Be sure to wear headphones or ear buds to enhance your experience.

Ghostly history tours and Halloween happenings lead a huge lineup of fun fall things to do in Grand Rapids. Visit our Fall page to plan your itinerary!
