  • The trip computer features can be optionally customised by the vehicle owner if required. When the vehicle is stationary, hold down the MODE button while turning the ignition from OFF to ON. The trip computer then steps you through a series of menu items, 1) ODO (odometer) window shown or disabled. Use the Up or Down Arrow button to select YES or NO as to whether the odometer will be displayed when the ignition is ON. Note that the odometer will still be active in the background, and will appear when the ignition is OFF. When the display is flashing on your selection, press the MODE button to go the next menu option. 2) TRIP distance - feature enabled or disabled. Use the Up or Down Arrow button until your choice is flashing. Press the MODE button to go to menu option 3. 3) DISTANCE TO GO - feature enabled or disabled. This choice will activate an additional set of displays including DISTANCE TO GO and TIME TO GO. Use the Up or Down Arrow button until your choice is flashing. Press the MODE button to go to menu option 4. 4) Adjust DISTANCE TO GO default setting. The DISTANCE TO GO can be reset (when not in customise mode) by pressing the Up and Down Arrow buttons together. The distance resets to 500 km, which is the default setting. When in customise mode, menu 4 enables the default setting to be altered up or down with the Up or Down Arrow buttons. When the desired value has been set, press the MODE button to go to menu option 5. 5) UNDERSPEED chime. The OVERSPEED provides a chime when your travelling speed exceeds the OVERSPEED chosen speed. An additional chime can be activated to indicated when the vehicle speed drops below the OVERSPEED Limit. Use the Up or Down Arrow button to select YES or NO as to whether the underspeed chime will be played when the vehicle speed drops below the OVERSPEED setting. When the desired value has been set, press the MODE button to exit the cluster customise mode. Additional Displays Two additional displays can be activated using the cluster customise mode. These additional displays include the DISTANCE TO GO and the TIME TO GO Displays. When these additional displays are activated, they will be made available by pressing the MODE button to scroll through the Trip Computer displays. The new trip computer displays will be added between the TRIP display and the DISTANCE TO EMPTY display. The Cluster Customise mode can be used to deactivate the displays, if required. Distance To Go Display At the start of a trip an estimate of distance to arrival (from maps, road signs etc.) should be made. Tap the Up or Down Arrow buttons until the display shows estimated trip distance. When the vehicle is driven the trip computer will constantly update the estimated time to arrival, based on changing driving speeds. The Up or Down Arrow buttons can be used to adjust the kilometres any time this display is shown.

Cluster Speed and Fuel Calibration (Level 2 and 3 Only)

  • The speedo reading and fuel level calibration numbers can be optionally calibrated by the vehicle owner if required. This feture is only available with the Level 2 and Level 3 VT / VX Instrument Clusters. To Calibrate the Speedo reading, If necessary to check/adjust distance calibration, line the vehicle front wheels against a highway kilometre shield post before entering customise mode. Press both the Up and Down Arrow buttons together when TRIP DIST is showing in the centre window (to zero the TRIP DIST). Drive to another shield post (between 10 km and 500 km) and stop with the front wheels lined up again. Note the real distance between the shield posts and the distance on the TRIP DIST display. If the distance is different, then 1) enter the cluster customise mode by holding down the MODE button while turning the ignition from OFF to ON. 2) Press the Mode Button until the left LCD Screen Displays CAL, and the right LCD Screen displays DIST 3) The TRIP DIST will be shown in the centre window. Press the Up or Down Arrow buttons to adjust the centre display to show the real distance indicated by the shield posts. NOTE: The left display (the distance calibration %) will automatically adjust with the centre display. The default distance calibration is 100.0%. The maximum it can be adjusted to is 120.0%, the minimum is 80%. NOTE: Altering the distance calibration does not affect the odometer. Press the MODE button to go to the next calibration number. To Calibrate the Fuel Flow reading, If necessary to check/adjust fuel flow calibration number, calculate the following before entering customise mode. Press both the Up and Down Arrow buttons together when FUEL USED is showing in the right hand LCD window (to zero the FUEL USED). Then, for at least five consecutive fuel fills, record the total litres added (but no more than 500 litres), as measured by the service station fuel bowser. If this is different to the FUEL USED reading, then 1) enter the cluster customise mode by holding down the MODE button while turning the ignition from OFF to ON. 2) Press the Mode Button until the left LCD Screen Displays CAL, and the right LCD Screen displays FUEL 3) The FUEL USED will be shown on the right hand lcd display. Press the Up or Down Arrow buttons to adjust the right hand LCD display to show the actual total fuel used according to the service station fuel bowser. NOTE: The left display (the fuel flow calibration %) will automatically adjust with the right display. The default fuel calibration is 100.0%. The maximum it can be adjusted to is 120.0%, the minimum is 80%

Resetting the Service Due Reminder

  • A service reminder message is built into the instrument cluster. The reminder message will first appear 1,000 km before the service is actually due, giving time to arrange for the service to be performed. The message will be shown on the Trip computer for 10 seconds whenever the vehicle's ignition is switched ON or OFF, until the trip computer is reset. When the service is overdue the message will flash for 10 seconds when the ignition is turned ON or OFF. SERV 1500 km will show when the vehicle has travelled 1,000 km since it was built. SERV 10000 km will show when the vehicle has travelled 9,000 km since it was built. SERV 20000 km will show when the vehicle has travelled 19,000 km since it was built. SERV 30000 km will show when the vehicle has travelled 29,000 km since is was built etc. When a service is performed on the vehicle, this reminder should be reset so that it does not prompt until the next service is nearly due. Otherwise, the instrument cluster will continuosly reminder the driver that a service is still due, when in fact the service has been completed. To reset the service reminder message: 1) Turn the ignition OFF. 2) Hold down the Up Down Arrow buttons on the trip computer together. 3) Turn the ignition ON (mode buttons still depressed). 4) Release mode buttons after approximately 3 seconds. 5) Use the mode button to step through trip computer screens until the service due reminder screen appears on the LCD (usually only one press). 6) Press and hold both the Up and Down Arrow mode buttons until an audible beep is heard (approximately 3 seconds). 7) Turn the ignition OFF. NOTE: The service due indicator message has now been reset, therefore, the next service due reminder message will not be displayed until 1000 km before the next service is due. NOTE: The Service Due message is calculated only by distance. Remember that if driving infrequently special servicing may be required.

1997 Holden Commodore: The VT Holden Commodore

No more guessing games: this is the vt in the metal. we’ve driven every model and delved under the skin of the most important holden in 50 years..

Siteassets Authors Angus Mackenzie

M ake no mistake - the VT Commodore is the most significant new Holden since the original 48/215 .

Like that first Holden , the VT - product of the biggest design, engineering and development program undertaken by Holden in 20 years- is more than just a car. It's an affirmation of Aussie skill, ingenuity and determination; a convincing rebuff to the nay-sayers who claim you can't build a world-class car in this country.

Yes, it's that good. Commodore and Falcon have always offered outstanding value in terms of package size and performance. VT retains those proven core values, but adds an impressive dose of refinement, quality and safety innovation.

But it's not perfect. That new body has increased the VT's mass by 166-195kg over the VS and taken the edge off performance while increasing thirst. And while GM engineers have worked wonders with the 3.8-litre Ecotec V6, it will never be as smooth as the latest generation alloy-block powerplants from Japan and Germany. Even so, VT Commodore is deeply impressive.

Impressive. Classy. Refined. They're the words which kept popping up during our preview drive at Holden's Lang Lang proving ground. Unchanged from the VS Commodore apart from new exhaust manifolds and the latest Bosch EV 6 fuel injectors, the 147kW Ecotec V6 fires abruptly on the turn of the key - which now takes noticeably less time to swap codes with the immobiliser in the engine computer- then settles down to its trademark grumbly idle. The new pistol-grip auto shifter is a touch notchy, but the four-speed auto slips as seamlessly as ever.

This gem of an engine now grunts out 171kW at 5200tpm and 375Nm of torque at 3000tpm on premium unleaded. The output increases are marginal - and attributed largely, says Holden V6 product manager Alistair McKinnon, to a new engine management system with individual cylinder knock-sensor control - but the torque peak now occurs some 600 revs lower down the range.

Why would you want a V8? Good question, and if it wasn't for the loyal core of V8 buyers and the success of the image-building HSV operation Holden probably wouldn't bother. But to keep the faith, the 5.0 has been given a tickle to boost power by 10kW and torque by 10Nm - just enough to keep it ahead of the blown V6.

The Borg-Warner TS manual transmission has been pensioned off in favour of a Getrag unit. Standard equipment in Executive, S and SS, the Getrag is smoother and slicker, although the gate feels a little wide. The clutch pedal now has a more progressive take-up, with little of the strong over-centre feel which once made smooth starts tricky.

Greatly improved ride comfort and lower NVH levels are instantly apparent once under way. A slight wind rustle was evident around the top of the front doors on the pre-production cars we drove, indicating Holden had still to finesse the door fit. It was never intrusive, however; we were just aware of it because the rest of the car is so quiet. Tyre noise – almost inescapable on Australia's coarse-chip roads - is the most noticeable aural accompaniment to VT's progress.

VT has MacPherson strut suspension up front, and semi-trailing independent rear suspension is now standard across the range. The VT front end features eight degrees of positive castor, for improved straight-line stability, and a hydraulic tension rod bush to reduce transmitted road shock. IRS has dramatically improved the ride, handling and traction of the wagon. "Because of its inclined shocks, the VS wagon was never as good as the live axle sedan," says Sichlau. "You just don't get the damping control you need. With IRS, the shocks don't seem to play as large a role."

Despite the compliant ride, the VT is a much more neutral handling car than the VS. Turn-in is crisper and there's less roll at the rear, thanks to the wider track. There's less understeer when you start to press on, too, and less of a tendency to snap smartly into oversteer at the limit.

Most cars run a 26mm stabiliser bar at the front. V6s get a 15mm rear bar; V8s and the supercharged S 16mm, while the V8 SS goes to 17mm. The exceptions are V8s with standard tyres and the FE2 suspension, which get a 25mm front bar to bring some balance back into the chassis.

Executive, Acclaim and Berlina all run P205/65 R15 tyres, while Calais comes with P215/60s on 16in alloys. The S goes to P225/50s on the same sized rims, while the SS boasts P235/45s on 17in alloys.

VT boasts the first all-new Holden braking system in almost 20 years. With larger, thicker rotors all round, bigger calipers and a larger master cylinder, the system offers a firm, consistent pedal and terrific stopping power.

The only real negative in the VT's dynamics is the Calais' speed-sensitive Variotronic steering. Beside the other cars' standard power-assisted Bishop variable ratio rack and pinion system, it feels wooden and lifeless at the straight ahead, and far less linear off-centre. Our preproduction Calais had an incorrect calibration in the system which made the steering very heavy at speed. Holden insists customers, particularly women, want fingertip steering at parking speeds.

Badgework has been kept to a minimum and model differentiation is achieved through major items such as wheel trims. Even the Executive gets body-coloured bumpers and doorhandles, while the Acclaim gets body-coloured mirrors and a black body-side moulding. The Calais glitters with just the right amount of jewellery: chrome around the grille and side windows, and in a strip in the body-side moulding and bumpers. Of the eight new colours in the 11-colour palette, only one solid is available: white.

The SS is going to give HSV a headache. Hunkered down on 17in rims, it comes in only three colours -white, Raven (black mica with blue highlights) and Botanica, a brilliant cobalt.

The wagon, which rolls on the 150mm longer wheelbase which will eventually carry the VT Statesman and Caprice, is even larger: 5042mm, 1847mm and 1545mm, up 139, 65 and 123mm over the VS wagon. With the 60/40 split rear seat folded, the rear load space is almost 2.2m long, 1.2m wide. Carrying capacity is a huge 2863 litres.

Inside, the front passengers now sit 22mm further apart, and there's 24mm more fore-aft front seat travel. There's also more leg, hip and shoulder room. The interior - all new apart from carryover stalks (the only VS pieces in the car apart from the drivetrains) - is in the de rigueur late '90s soft-form style. It's elegant and well executed, however, even on the base Executive, and easily the most integrated interior yet on a Commodore.

For a $30,000 car - VT prices are about two percent up on VS across the board – the base Executive is therefore anything but basic, with power steer, remote deadlock central locking and boot release, and driver's airbag included in the price. At $33,980, the Acclaim is about $2500 more than the Camry Conquest V6 auto, but barely hundreds more than a Magna Advance or Falcon Futura. Like these, it offers dual airbags, ABS and cruise control as standard, but also includes traction control.

At the top of the range, Calais steals a march on the opposition by also offering standard traction control on V6s, dual climate control air-conditioning and an automatic light-sensing headlight system.

The $44,890 SS comes standard with the 179k W 5.0 litre V8 and five speed manual, but can also be equipped with the 171kW supercharged V6. HSV's new 195kW version of the V8 is also available as an option - indeed, it can also be fitted to Executive, Berlina and Calais.

At first acquaintance, the VT Commodore is without doubt the best Australian designed, engineered and developed car yet. But that's not the good news. The good news is that Australia's best no longer means second-best.

Holden Commodore / Calais

September 1997 - september 2000, (vt series ii: june 1999 - september 2000).

The VT is a completely new model, like the VB in 1978 and the VN in 1988. Holden has taken the 1995 Opel Omega GM2800 platform and completely redesigned it to suit. They have made it wider and longer, and stronger.

The VT is longer, wider and lower than the VS. There is more front and rear leg room, and more shoulder room. Boot capacity is up by 26%.

Driver's side airbag is standard across all models. IRS is also standard across the range, on sedans and wagons. There is also an option for Traction Control, which is a first for Australian cars. The fuel tank is made from plastic.

The brake system is completely new, featuring twin piston calipers on the front, and greatly improving the brake pedal's feel in reducing brake pedal travel, and also reducing brake fade.

In 1998, Side Impact Airbags were introduced, again a first for an Australian car.

Running changes introduced during VT production has resulted in later builds being lighter and more fuel efficient than the early VT models.

The big news with the VT Series II is the introduction of the Chevrolet Generation III LS1 5.7L V8, producing 220kW and 446Nm. This replaces the Holden 5.0L V8. A six-speed manual gearbox replaces the five-speed with the V8. The VT II Calais has a new instrument panel, and now features the Supercharged V6 engine as standard. All models now offer the added security of remote central deadlocking (formerly required the key to be turned in the door lock) now easily activated by pressing the Priority Key twice. Turn signal indicators illuminate for 3 seconds to indicate that the car is in a deadlocked state. An electric boot release disable function is now standard, when the Priority Key is used to lock or deadlock, the in-car boot release button is automatically disabled. A battery saver function is a further upgrade to the Series II Commodore's body control module, when the ignition is off, any interior lights left on, including the boot light, will automatically shut down after 60 minutes of inactivity to prevent battery drain. Traction control can now be specified with the V8 as well as the V6 auto powertrain combinations. Cruise control is now available as an option on all models equipped with manual transmission. Exterior styling cues that differentiate the Series II Commodore and identify particular models include revised grille treatments in matt silver and chrome; all-new wheel covers and alloy wheels; clear side and rear indicator lenses; chrome window surrounds; bodyside mouldings and Series II badging. The Calais is further identified by a slim chrome bar on the rear decor panel.

In October 1998 at the Sydney Motor Show Holden unveiled a production ready VT Commodore Coupe. For more info check out the VT Commodore Coupe Page .

Commodore 9C1 (Police Pack, originally BT1)

The 9C1 pack contains some of the following: ABS, FE2 Sports Suspension, IRS, LSD, Driver's Airbag and Passenger's Airbag (SRS), Sump protector plate and fuel tank protector plate, Door interior light switches disabled, map reading light/interior light, special brake pads (front and rear), certified police speedometer, with light in instrument binnacle over speedo (to read speedo no lights on), and can be V6, V8 or HSV V8. With the V8, the seats have SS embroided on them. The 9C1 pack is added to an Executive, but (in Queensland at least) can also be added on to SS with HSV V8 for pursuit vehicles.

The 1997 Cadillac Catera is built on the GM2800 platform, and is similar to the VT Commodore. Here is a small pic of the Catera.

Holden VT/VX Commodore: The Most Beautiful Aussie Sedans Ever?

Holden VT/VX Commodore: The Most Beautiful Aussie Sedans Ever?

vt commodore cruise control

The VT Commodore will go down in history as one of the three or four most important Commodores across what should be thought of as four generations. Indeed, this was the first of the third generation cars. Perhaps it should be considered as one of the true breakthrough Holdens, even more important than, say, the FE (1956, first new-look Holden) and the 1963 EH (with new 100 and 115 brake horsepower ‘red’ engines).

To grasp its significance to the entire Australian motoring industry, the VT needs to be given more context.

vt commodore cruise control

November 1978: the VB Commodore arrives as the first truly European-inspired mainstream Holden. By mainstream, I mean the volume-seller, the supposedly ‘full-size’ model, as opposed to a Torana or Gemini. But there is no particular logic to how the Commodore fits into the existing Holden model lineup. Amazingly, both the larger Kingswood/Premier models and the marginally smaller Toranas remain in showrooms: Holden’s marketing heavies are waiting to see how well the Commodore sells. All VBs use carryover six-cylinder and V8 engines. Kingswood/Premiers, Toranas and Commodores are all available with a choice of these engines, making for a huge overlap and a marketing nightmare.

Did any other manufacturer anywhere in the world in 1978 offer three medium to large sedans of completely different exterior and interior design with the choice of six-cylinder or V8 engines? The Torana was also sold as the four-cylinder Sunbird.

Facelifts on the first generation Commodore are VC (1980), VH (1981), VK (1984 and (most importantly) VL (1986) which also introduces the Nissan 3.0-litre single overhead camshaft sixpack to be shared with the Skyline.

vt commodore cruise control

August 1988: the so-called ‘Big New V6 Commodore’, the VN ushers in the second generation. For the first time, the Commodore matches or betters the Falcon’s interior dimensions. It uses a lusty, if old-fashioned US-sourced V6 engine. A supercharged version was optional. So was the 5.0-litre V8, upgraded to offer either 179kW or 195.

Facelifts are VP (1991), VR (1993) and VS (1996). The VS is equipped with the upgraded ‘Ecotec’ V6 engine to be used in the forthcoming VT.

What was so special about the VT? Well, the first thing to be said about is that from day one the public loved this sleek machine. So superior to the Falcon was it perceived to be that Ford Australia never again seriously challenged the Commodore’s position as Australia’s top-selling car. When such challenges arrived in the following century, the cars were the Toyota Corolla, Mazda3 and Toyota HiLux. It was the VT that consolidated the Commodore’s ascendancy over the Falcon. Not that all of this was down to Holden because the AU Falcon  also played a major part.

Like the VN, the VT began life as an Australianised Opel Omega. Unlike the VN, the finished product shared almost nothing with the German car beyond a broad design theme. Australian designer, Mike Simcoe, who would go on to international fame within General Motors, created what was up to that time undoubtedly the most stylish sedan ever manufactured in this country. The VT made Simcoe’s name, and even though he later designed the VT-based Monaro, it is the sedan that will ultimately be judged the greater achievement).

vt commodore cruise control

Here for the first time was a Holden that could bear comparison with a BMW on looks and road stance (and the grille was obviously BMW-influenced, as had been the case since 1993 when the VR introduced its variation of the BMW twin kidneys). There were no obvious compromises in design, as evidenced by the fact that the sporty SS variant came with standard 17-inch wheels, a size that had been the province of HSV models only just a few years earlier. To most observers, the VT was beautiful. But as well as being beautiful, it exuded purpose. Even now, it is difficult to believe how many years have passed since this was Holden’s new car!

No doubt, there are some Holden enthusiasts who would argue that the first series Commodores (1978) had a certain beauty as well. But a key development with VT was that even the entry level car had a really stylish interior as well. For the first time, those who could afford only the least expensive model were not short-changed when it came to features and fabrics.

The VT Executive was designed to appeal not only to fleet customers but also to fussier private buyers. Ford Australia’s marketing team, by contrast, chose the opposite approach to their lasting chagrin: the AU Forte came to market significantly cheaper than a VT Exec, but most of us couldn’t cop the hose-out, cheap feel to the cabin (and that’s before we get started on the exterior detailing!).

vt commodore cruise control

So buyers fell in love with the VT. They loved its exterior and interior styling. They loved the solid feeling of quality the car imparted. They loved its ride and handling. Despite the fact that this significantly heavier and safer Commodore used the same 147kW Ecotec engine as its VS predecessor, few owners complained about the slower acceleration. That’s because they were too busy being in love with their cars. It is significant that Holden’s publicity acknowledged that ‘the mass increase of 175kg has resulted in increased acceleration times and fuel consumption over VS’, although the VT ‘continues to provide strong performance and very competitive fuel economy’.

There were unseen virtues, too. The major reason for the Commodore’s weight gain was the much higher level of safety engineered into the car. It was in the early 1990s that work began on the VT, a time when the international automotive industry was more focused on safety than ever before. (The real catalyst for this came in the late 1980s when a leading German magazine began buying its own cars and crash-testing them at high speeds. This forced every major manufacturer to concentrate even more on safety because a bad crash result in Auto, Motor und Sport could only be seriously brand-damaging.)

The VT Executive cost $30,500 at launch with its wagon counterpart at $32,340. Standard equipment was barely credible when judged against the expectations of the VR or VS. Electric height adjustment for the driver’s seat, a rudimentary trip computer and electric windows were all standard. The wagon got a centre lap/sash belt instead of the previous near useless lap belt. But, of course, it wasn’t just the list of standard features but the whole feel of the car: solid, planted, substantial – and of superior quality to any previous Holden.

Next up was the Acclaim, a variant which made its debut with VR. Essentially it was a safety pack and for VR it comprised ABS brakes, independent rear suspension (IRS), driver’s airbag and cruise control, as well as automatic transmission. But much of this marketing cleverness was lost by VT time when IRS and the airbag were standard across the range. The Acclaim cost $33,980 as a sedan and $34,960 as a wagon.

The Berlina name had joined the Commodore lineup with VK back in 1984. This mid-spec version of the VT cost $39,800 as a sedan and $42,600 as a wagon.  Automatic, ABS, alloys, fast glass, climate control, cruise control, and many other minor accoutrements were included.

The Calais continued to top the range and was available only as a sedan with the account opening at $48,760. The supercharged six was standard. Much plusher trim (with leather optional), a far better stereo, more electronic wizardry, fog lamps and 16 X 7 alloys were standard.

There were two sporty versions, the $35,550 six-cylinder S and the V8 SS at $44,900. The S was only mildly tweaked with 16-inch alloys, a new bodykit, air-conditioning (as standard equipment), leather steering wheel and ritzier upholstery. But you still got the 179kW sixpack, meaning more show with no more go. By contrast, the SS added 17 X 8 alloys, the 179kW V8, a standard Getrag manual five-slotter, sports (FE2) suspension, limited slip differential, sports seats and. twin airbags.

vt commodore cruise control

It is fair to say that the VT Commodore was not quite as good as many people thought. Although the Ecotec V6 was much smoother than it had been back in VN days, it was nevertheless an old-fashioned and coarse unit, in no way to be compared with V6s found in contemporaneous cars such as the Toyota Camry or Mitsubishi Magna.

Yes, it did feature independent rear suspension, but this was a fairly basic arrangement. The control links used by Opel on this semi-trailing arm system were deleted to cut costs. One obvious negative was that when a VT was fully loaded, it sat right down in the rear. There was also some driveline harshness, especially in the V6 cars.

Holden’s Marc McInnes, a former engineer and rally driver who ran the NSW and Queensland public affairs office, was responsible for some of the best press release drives. The Holden system assigned a senior executive to a particular car and the journalists were divided into (colour) teams and cycled through representative cars.

I remember driving one leg with a young engineer beside me. He said he had heard that I drove a Falcon. (It was an EL XR8 manual, considerably improved over standard.) Now, the conventional wisdom among the motoring press was that Commodores were generally superior to Falcons. This bloke was most curious as to why I would choose a Falcon. It actually took me a few seconds to remember the answer, simply because I had long ago ruled a Commodore off my list. At the time I was a triathlete. The Falcon’s split-fold rear seat allowed me to load my racing road bike straight in. But the Commodore only offered a ski-port, which was a deal-breaker for me. This design mistake has been perpetuated in every subsequent Commodore!

The VT was marketed as a driver’s car but its power steering offered little road feel. With wider wheels and sports suspension, the SS was considerably better dynamically.

Then there is the wagon with its hearse-like appearance. Its rear compartment was configured to make it suitable for Telstra. The total result was that the newfound elegance attained by all VT sedans was lost in the load-haulers.

vt commodore cruise control

In June 1999 came the first revision to the chart-topping VT with the Series II. The major news was the replacement of the venerable but much loved Aussie 308 with a detuned Gen III Chevrolet 5.7-litre V8. With peak power of 220kW and torque of 446Nm, Gen III offered the promise of significantly more urge. Also, the Executive and SS came standard with a new six-speed manual when specified with the V8. In every other application the Gen III engine was teamed with the already rather dated and clunky Turbo-Hydramatic four-speed automatic.

Visually, VT Series IIs were differentiated by new badging and clear lenses on the side repeater and rear indicators. The exciting new Tiger mica orange livery was immediately popular and was certainly the hero colour for VT Series II SSs. Remote central locking was standardised. There were several other minor changes.

vt commodore cruise control

There would be little more than another year before the VX facelift made its debut.

I have already mentioned Mike Simcoe and another key Holden executive of this era who warrants introduction is Laurie Spark, who ran Holden’s safety programs and was a passionate public advocate. Every Holden update seemed to feature bow-tied Sparke (looking every cm the university lecturer) spruiking his safety message. It was Sparke who did great work in ensuring the VT boasted a high degree of frontal impact protection. For the outwardly similar VX he had developed a new upper B-pillar joint along with reinforcement that directed impact forces down towards the feet. New door trims and breakaway door handles completed an extensive improvement in side impact safety. Side airbags had been introduced with VT and were standard on VX Acclaim, Berlina and Calais.

While, of course, there were those who argued that safety shouldn’t be optional, the very fact that the Commodore had moved so far ahead of its nearest rival in side impact safety (which still lacked side airbags until the coming of the BA two years after VX!) is the point that should be stressed. According to Sparke, the risk of injury in a VX not equipped with side airbags was half that of a similar VT. So the modifications which he described as having cost ‘peanuts’ were obviously highly effective.

The VX got modest power increases for both V6 and V8 engines, a neat five kW for each, taking the standard sixpack from 147 to 152kW and the Gen III from 220 to 225kW. But the supercharged six’s peak remained at 171kW.

vt commodore cruise control

More importantly, all Commodores got a new driveshaft with rubber couplings at each end. This reduced the driveline harshness which had long been a Commodore gripe. Changes to the front suspension were aimed at making the car a little less sharp in response with more tendency to understeer, albeit certainly not in the manner of the HQ! The overall effect was to make the VX smoother and more refined than its already impressive predecessor.

Crisper frontal treatments clearly differentiated the less expensive Exec, Acclaim, S and SS models from their Berlina/Calais siblings was welcome.

vt commodore cruise control

But the loss of the red plastic trim which gave the visual impression of full-width tail lights was a question for the beholder. I, for one, preferred the look of the entry level VT from behind to the VX with its body-coloured bootlid.

vt commodore cruise control

In August 2001 the Series II was in Holden showrooms. The biggest news was the addition of extra links to the independent rear suspension to reduce camber change under loads. After four years in the market, the Commodore still felt contemporary and monthly sales were still running sometimes as high as twice the Falcon’s.

The VT and VX Commodores had immense popular appeal which continues even now. Resale values have reflected new car sales, keeping the Commodore significantly ahead of an equivalent Falcon.

vt commodore cruise control

These cars have kept a strong following and still look and feel surprisingly fresh. The VT SS on its smart 17-inch alloys set the template for those who like to modify their cars and there have been no shortage of VT and VX customers eager to get their cars riding as low as possible on huge rims and ultra-low profile tyres. It’s no surprise, then, that few standard VT or VX SS Commodores survive. And, of course, V8 Supercar racing has made its own huge contribution to the VT/VX legend.

  • Solid drivetrain
  • Good ones are holding their value very well
  • Lazy V6 power
  • Many will have abused within an inch of their life
  • Good ones are becoming rare, so aren’t cheap for what they are
  • They’re getting old, so not the safest car on the road

The 1997-2000 Holden VT Commodore was a mid-size family sedan produced by Holden. It was the seventh generation of the popular Commodore series and was a significant step forward in terms of design, technology, and performance.

The VT Commodore featured a sleek and aerodynamic exterior design, with a more rounded shape compared to its predecessor. It offered a spacious and comfortable interior with improved quality materials and finishes. The cabin was well-equipped (for the time), featuring amenities such as power windows and air conditioning.

Under the hood, the VT Commodore offered a range of engine options. The base model was powered by a 3.8-litre V6 engine, delivering okay power and fuel efficiency. There were also higher-performance variants available, including the SS and HSV models, which featured a more powerful V8 engine, offering much better performance and a sportier driving experience.

In terms of safety, it featured standard dual front airbags and optional side airbags, anti-lock brakes (ABS) were also available, providing improved braking performance and control.

Overall, the 1997-2000 Holden VT Commodore was a significant model in the Commodore lineup, representing a notable advancement in terms of design, technology, and performance. It remains a beloved and iconic Australian car, embodying the qualities that made the Commodore series so successful.

Obviously, the VT Commodore launched over 25 years ago, so don’t buy expecting the safest or most feature-soaked car on the road. The major issue with the VT Commodore is that good ones are increasing in value as they’re entering into a phase of collectability, especially S, SS and HSV models. This review will focus on the standard Commodore VT models only, not the HSV models.

1997-2000 Holden Commodore VT-2

What goes wrong

Being close to 25 years old, the exterior of the VT Commodore should be checked for dodgy repairs and any evidence of poorly fitted mods. Many drove the VT Commodore with next to no mechanical sympathy, so trips into other cars, gutters, and bushes may have been frequent.

Go over the exterior of the Commodore with a fine-toothed comb and make sure you get a pre-purchase inspection done if you’re in the market for one.

The ABS warning light would stay on due to a sensor lead contacting the sway bar link. This was remedied in 199 with the addition of a retaining clip.

Mechanically:

  • The chassis rails are prone to rust. In fact with the age of some examples, rust can be a huge issue.
  • There are reports of excessive tyre wear as well as knocking and grinding noises from the suspension.
  • Worn bearings in the steering column can cause play in the steering.
  • The V6 engine can have oil leaks thanks to dodgy seals.
  • V6s can have a ringing noise at idle because the drive belt may be slapping against the aircon pulley.
  • The V8s have been reported to use excessive oil as well as have some coolant leaks.
  • On early versions of the V8s, they could leak power steering fluid. From 1999, this issue was rectified.

vt commodore cruise control

If you’re looking buying a Holden VT Commodore, it’s likely you fall into one of two camps. You’re either looking for one of the ‘normal’ models as a dependable family car, for not too much money, or you’re looking for a mint condition example of one of the more special VT Commodores like an SS or HSV model.

The issue is that any of the normal variants, even the decent ones are increasing in value, to the point where you’re better off buying a slightly newer Toyota Camry for similar of less money. The VT Commodores that are affordable, probably have a load of kilometres and are falling apart, so should be avoided.

If you’re the special ones, you’re probably looking at it from a collector’s point of view, so you’re probably not looking at it as a daily family car.

At least on paper, the VT Commodore is a no-nonsense, solid family car, with many owners still praising its longevity. If you do buy one, just know you’re buying a car pushing 25 years old, where many examples have been abused and driven to within an inch of their lives. It will have basically no modern safety aids and no mod-cons.

Hi everyone, I got a VR acclaim last week and have found it very difficult to activate cruise control. The green light CRS comes on, but I cant seem to activate the ON screen on the dash which makes it work. Im not doing the wrong thing, Im 99% sure somethings wrong. Ive been told it may be the buttons worn off? Im in melbourne so I was wondering if anyone new any places that the'd take a look at things like this, or if anyone has had a similar prob and they would like to share would be great too. Comments appreciated. EDIT: Yes I have downgraded from a VT r8 LS1 to a VR 3.8 litre , petrols looking better though

Cruise Control Issues

I have had a number of vehicles with cruise control, including a VS II Manual (and a Ford Fairmont Ghia Manual). I have had very few problems, but I once had a problem with the brake/clutch disconnect micro-switch. My first reaction with an Acclaim would be to check the brake pedal microswitch. In my case, all it took was a fiddle to make sure the switch was correctly alligned and the problem went away. Next thing I would check would be connections all through the system. Hope this helps.

EDIT: Yes I have downgraded from a VT r8 LS1 to a VR 3.8 litre , petrols looking better though In the VS I drive there is basically two buttons that activate and deactivate cruise control. I think the lower one gets the green CRS on the screen and the top button turns it on... I think you should get it checked out.
Ahh the good old VR/VS Cruise control. Make sure its not your cruise control buttons on the indicator stalks. I recently replaced my indicator stalk because the buttons just didnt work. Otherwise check under your brake peddel, you have a little button that when pushed in by your brake peddel, deactivates the CC. If this is being pushed in when the peddel is not being used, it will stop you from activating the Cruise Control. A new stalk from holden is about $120 if i remember correctly. Part number #92054763
Ive got a VR ss with cruise control. The way i turn it on is push the stalk with CC foward and then there should be a button to push on the side or top of the stalk to activate it.
