The Real Ranch in Montana Where “Yellowstone” Is Filmed

Yellowstone Dutton Ranch House

In the first episode of the insanely popular series “Yellowstone,” Kevin Costner’s character John Dutton quips, “Leverage is knowing if someone had all the money in the world, this is what they’d buy.” When the camera soars over his family’s sprawling Yellowstone Ranch in Montana, it’s easy to see why.

“Yellowstone” has it all: intense family drama, political intrigue, and more knock-down drag-out fights per episode than you can shake a branding iron at. It’s that explosive mix that has fans waiting impatiently for another season to arrive (hopefully later this year!).

To say the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch, with its white barns and big-sky vistas is stunning would be an understatement. And for those of us who appreciate beautiful houses, the show also has us hooked on the historic log home where the Dutton family lives.

It’s obvious they didn’t film this on a backlot somewhere or on a soundstage with green screens. This is the real deal. And so is the house where they film the show in Montana.

Not only that, but you can rent two of the guest cabins on the property that you’ve seen on TV. Read on to learn all about it!

Yellowstone TV show cast in Paramount poster

At the heart of “Yellowstone” is the story of a family doing everything in their power to hold onto the ranch where generations of Duttons have lived and worked before them.

Kevin Costner plays the patriarch, John Dutton, who realizes he needs to prepare his children to take over eventually.

But which of them can he trust with the future of their family’s legacy — Jamie (played by Wes Bentley ), Beth ( Kelly Reilly ), or Kayce ( Luke Grimes )?

They film “Yellowstone” in Darby, Montana, at the historic Chief Joseph Ranch .

Darby is a small town of about 720 people, about 4 hours west of bozeman., the chief joseph ranch is near the idaho border, in the foothills of the bitterroot mountain range ..

Chief Joseph Ranch sits on a trail once taken by the Lewis and Clark expedition .

The main house we see on “yellowstone” is a 6,000-square-foot historic log mansion., it was built in the early 1900s and was painstakingly restored in the 1990s., the website for chief joseph ranch explains its history in more detail:.

The 2,500-acre property was located in the western part of lands inhabited by the Salish tribe for hundreds of years.

When Lewis and Clark entered the upper Bitterroot Valley in September 1805, they followed a trail used by the native tribes. The Nez Perce also annually traveled the trail south to reach the bison hunting grounds in the Big Hole Valley, often banding together with the Salish to counter threats from other tribes, notably the Blackfoot.

Chief Joseph led his people across the ranch in his flight from the U.S. Army during the Nez Perce War in the summer of 1877.

The property was homesteaded by settlers in 1880 and was originally known as the Shelton Ranch.

It was later sold to a glass tycoon from ohio named william ford., he commissioned bates & gamble, an architectural firm in toledo, to build his family’s summer home..

When Ford bought the ranch, it was an apple orchard:

Using both log and stone resources native to the grounds, William Ford began a three-year endeavor to build one of the great log structures of the American West: the Ford-Hollister Lodge. The family moved into the house in 1920.

Ford also built three massive barns as the centerpiece for his model dairy. He later replaced the apple trees with the largest herd of Holsteins west of the Mississippi. In the early 1920s, the dairy operation gave way to a Hereford herd.

In the 1950s, the Ford and Hollister Ranch was sold and renamed the Chief Joseph Ranch in honor of the great Nez Perce chief and his journey through the property.

(Note: I summarized the history above. Visit the Chief Joseph Ranch website for more details and to see old photos of the ranch!)

The Chief Joseph Ranch is currently owned by Shane Libel and his family, who says :

“We run the ranch as a guest ranch from June through August. We have horses and cows and we sell hay.

“The most surreal thing in the world is when you’re sitting in your own living room, watching a show that’s filmed in your house.”

(Can you imagine? Especially with some of the wild scenes on this show!)

When it comes to the historic log home they live in and where many of the “Yellowstone” scenes are shot, both inside and out, Libel says, “There’s always a balance between what we preserve historically and what we make functional for a modern family.”

“When we moved here we redid the kitchen, we redid the mudroom, we redid the great room, I could make a list a mile long of the things we improved.”

She gives us all the details on the house and how they style it for the show:.

Curry, who is also working on the sets for the “Yellowstone” prequel “1883,” says:

“this house is the real deal. this is what makes this show sing., the lodge has become another character in our show.”.

“The lighting in here is original Tiffany, and original to the lodge.

We’re just thrilled to have these details in the dutton world. it couldn’t be more spot-on.”.

“The lodge has been here for generations, and we wanted it to feel like it has evolved over those generations,” Curry says.

“The sofas are new, the draperies are new, but we mixed them in with family heirloom antiques.

We want it to feel like generations have brought their style and aesthetics to the lodge.”.

“We leave it here all year round and encourage the family to use it.

This is not a set, it is not a stage, this is a private home that we are lucky enough to be in.”.

The kitchen doesn’t seem very big for a house of this size, but it has a lot of character with the log and stone walls, the plaid wallpaper, and the rows of hooks where they can hang their cowboy hats.

One of my favorite things about the kitchen is the large window over the sink that overlooks the property:

There are four bedrooms and two bathrooms on the second floor.

The cozy sitting area off John’s bedroom features another stone fireplace:

Beth, who is kind of terrifying (John Dutton says she even “walks mad”), is played by British actress Kelly Reilly.

In a flashback to 1996 we see her bathroom with pink paneled walls and a freestanding tub:.

Set Decorator Carla Curry says they added the striped curtains throughout the house for the show.

John Dutton's office at the ranch

One of my readers shared her family’s personal connection to the ranch:

“My mother grew up on that ranch. Her parents came over from Norway and her father, Ragnvald Storm, was one of the managers of the Ford Ranch.

“I remember a lot of stories of keeping the fireplace wood stocked for the walk-in fireplaces, watching all the parties from the catwalk above the great room, playing in the barns, etc. We have a very long history with that ranch/lodge. Even my grandmother’s sister, from Norway, was the cook there.

“The house is way up on a hill and it requires quite a hike (or ATV or horse) to get down around the road to the barns.

“My husband and I have visited several times and stayed in the main lodge. It’s amazing to see it all on TV, but it’s even more incredible in person.

Kevin Costner in Dutton dining room

She also mentions the dining room, saying, “I think the current owners have remodeled the dining room because the last time we were there, it was all glass windows (where my mother once found a rattlesnake curled up in the corner in the sun!). Unless those dining room scenes are filmed on a set, it’s certainly changed.”

This makes me wonder if they repurposed another room for the show, turning it into the dining room. If anyone has the scoop, let me know!

In 1993 Barbara Lloyd wrote about the ranch and its history for the New York Times :

Melvin Pervais, a 53-year-old Chippewa Indian, bought the 1,400-acre Chief Joseph Ranch in 1987. A self-made multimillionaire who grew up on the Ojibwa Reservation along the Canadian shore of Lake Superior, Mr. Pervais left the reservation when he was 16 and later made his fortune setting up control systems for nuclear power plants.

Beth Dutton on front porch of Yellowstone ranch

When Melvin Pervais bought the Chief Joseph Ranch in the 1980s, it was in serious disrepair:

“It was weed infested, no fences, barns falling apart,” Mr. Pervais said. But the ranch had a beguiling history, and its main log house, which Mr. Pervais refers to as the lodge, had retained its ornate beauty.

overhead view John Dutton house Yellowstone

The NYT story reported that “Some of the logs in the lodge are 60 feet long and nearly 2 feet in diameter. A ridge timber, which runs the length of the roof line, is 120 feet long.” The trees were at least 200 years old.

front of the lodge in Yellowstone

The wood for the house was harvested from trees nearby. They let them dry out for a year in order to help preserve the bark.

This was a time-consuming and expensive process that would rarely (if ever) be replicated today. The bark was left on the outside of the house but removed from interior logs.

You can rent two of the cabins on the Chief Joseph Ranch.

They offer lee dutton’s and rip wheeler’s cabins for short-term stays., here’s how lee’s cabin appeared in season 2 (below):.

The ranch website says:

The Fisherman Cabin (Lee’s home) overlooks the Bitterroot River, providing 360-degree views of the Bitterroot Mountains and the Sapphire Mountains. Built in 1916, the cabin served as housing for the lodge’s domestic staff. $1,200 a night for up to 4 guests.

Rip’s cabin (which was later Kayce’s on the show) starts at $1,500 per night.

“Yellowstone” films on location at the main lodge, the barns, the trapper’s cabin, and the bunkhouse (shown below):

Chief Joseph Ranch owner Shane Libel says they leave the “Yellowstone Dutton Ranch” sign up at the entrance to the ranch year-round, even when they’re not filming, and get “hundreds of people” coming out to take photos of it. (I bet!)

I took these screenshots while streaming the show and watching the behind-the-scenes video provided by Paramount.

You can stream the first three seasons of “Yellowstone” on Peacock, but you’ll have to subscribe to Paramount Plus to stream the fourth. They’re reportedly going to start filming the fifth season later this year.

And then there’s the “Yellowstone” prequel, billed as the Dutton family’s origin story, called “1883” that you can only watch on Paramount Plus at the moment.

It stars real-life couple Tim McGraw and Faith Hill as John Dutton’s ancestors, James and Margaret Dutton.

Are you a “Yellowstone” fan, counting the months until the next season arrives?

If you haven’t tuned in yet, sensitive viewers should know that it can be pretty violent at times. I’m often watching through my fingers, waiting for the fight scenes to be over because I’m such a wimp about that stuff. But the family drama and the gorgeous setting are compelling enough to keep me watching!

Can You Visit the Dutton Family Ranch From ‘Yellowstone?’

Watching the hit TV series “Yellowstone,” you might feel like you’re in Montana with the famous Dutton family. But did you know you could turn that feeling into reality?

One of the show’s primary shooting locations is open to the public for a price. You can see where they film the show, and you may even spend the night there. It’s an opportunity to see the rustic splendor the show’s fictional family has enjoyed for decades.

Let’s find out more about this popular television drama and the exact location of its fantastic scenery.

"Yellowstone" premieres Wednesday, June 20 on Paramount Network. John Dutton (center - Kevin Costner), owner of the Dutton Ranch is surrounded by his ranch team (pictured l to r) Walker (Ryan Bingham), Lloyd (Forrie Smith), Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser), Jimmy (Jefferson White), Colby (Denim Richards) and Fred (Luke Peckinpah.

About the TV Show ‘Yellowstone’

In many ways, “Yellowstone” is a classic western set in modern times. Kevin Costner stars as the patriarch of an influential ranching family in Montana. Other members of the powerhouse cast include Kelly Reilly, Cole Hauser, Wes Bentley, and Gil Birmingham.

Costner plays an influential rancher, John Dutton III, who enters politics and becomes the governor of Montana. The show’s ongoing theme is how the Dutton family has fought for generations to maintain their way of life. That includes fighting to hold on to hundreds of thousands of acres of land bordering Yellowstone National Park.

The show debuted in 2018 on the Paramount Network and has launched two spinoff series, “1883” and “1923.”

Where Can I Watch All the Seasons of ‘Yellowstone?’

Because the show is on Paramount, you might think you can binge-watch through Paramount+ or Netflix. That’s not the case, however.

Peacock TV, NBC’s streaming service, has exclusive rights to “Yellowstone.” Because of this arrangement, you can watch the new episodes via Paramount through services like SlingTV and Philo.

For earlier seasons, however, you’ll need to subscribe to Peacock or purchase them on Amazon Prime.

What Is the Dutton Family Ranch?

Much of the action in “Yellowstone” takes place at the Dutton’s huge cattle ranch. It’s in a fictional area of Montana called Paradise Valley.

This is where the Dutton family’s magnificent log cabin-style mansion sits on hundreds of thousands of acres east of Bozeman. We’re not sure exactly how big their spread is, but in an early episode, they say it’s the size of Rhode Island. That’s nearly 800,000 acres!

Who Really Owns the Yellowstone Ranch?

Locals know the iconic 5,000-square-foot and surrounding acreage as the historic Chief Joseph Ranch . This landmark property is much smaller than it appears on TV but still sizable at around 2,500 acres. It’s south of Darby, Montana, in the Bitterroot River Valley.

William S. Ford and Howard Clark Hollister built the massive lodge from native materials beginning in 1914. There have been a few other owners since then.

The current ones, since 2012, are Shane Libel and his family. They live there full-time and welcome overnight guests when the cameras aren’t rolling.

Can You Visit the Dutton Family Ranch from ‘Yellowstone?’

Driving down Appaloosa Trail off Highway 93, you can’t miss the imposing lodge or the ranch’s familiar white barns.

You may also see a crowd of people outside the gates to the ranch. These are likely fans of “Yellowstone” wanting in on the action, or at least to see where it takes place.

The ranch’s owners are familiar with the attention by now, so they don’t mind visitors. But to get past security and see inside the gates, you’ll need to be a guest with a reservation.

Can You Stay at the Dutton Yellowstone Ranch?

Before the Libel family owned it, the ranch was a bed and breakfast. These days, the main lodge is private, but two cabins on the property are available as overnight accommodations.

They may look familiar to “Yellowstone” viewers, too. One of them, the Fisherman Cabin, got lots of screen time as Lee Dutton’s cabin during the first two seasons.

It dated to 1916 and was originally quarters for the ranch’s domestic staff. The other, the Ben Cook Cabin, was where the character Rip spent much of his time in the show’s first season.

If you spend the night at the ranch, you won’t be confined to your cabin. Each reservation includes a tour of the ranch and all the filming locations on the property. You can also do some fishing, as the ranch has more than a mile of direct access to the Bitterroot River.

HOT TIP If you want to visit the splendor of Yellowstone National Park, you need to know about the best RV campsites in the park .

Cabin Features

Each of the Chief Joseph Ranch’s guest cabins sleeps up to eight guests and has a full kitchen and a propane grill.

The Fisherman Cabin, or Lee Dutton’s Cabin, has two bedrooms and a loft. There’s one king-size bed, two queens, and two twins. There’s a spacious living room, two full bathrooms, and a closed-in porch.

The Ben Cook Cabin, also Rip’s Cabin, has two bedrooms and a loft. It has three queen-sized beds and two twins. The cabin includes two full baths, one with a bathtub and two porches.

Each cabin has a washer, dryer, Wi-Fi internet service, and DirectTV.

Nightly Cost

The introductory rate for the Fisherman Cabin is $1,200 per night for up to four guests. It’s an extra $50 a night per guest for each additional guest up to eight.

For the Ben Cook Cabin, the base rate is $1,500 per night . The same extra fee of $50 applies to each additional guest.

Reservations

Three nights is the minimum for staying at the cottages, and there are discounts for five nights or more. You must pay a deposit upfront but can get a refund if you cancel more than 90 days out.

You may want to check the ranch’s website or call the reservation line for more details.

Is Visiting the Dutton Family Ranch from ‘Yellowstone’ Worth It?

If you’re a super fan of “Yellowstone,” spending a few nights on set is nothing less than a dream come true. It’s a no-brainer if you have the money to spend. Even if you’re as rich as the Duttons, you’d surely be impressed with the ranch and its surrounding natural beauty.

But as more casual watchers of the show, we’d probably be content to mingle with the other curious folks outside the gates. Especially with the three-night minimum, staying overnight is a pretty substantial investment. We wouldn’t mind driving by while enjoying other places in the area, including the namesake national park.

TV Show "Yellowstone" Filming Locations in Western Montana

Fans of "Yellowstone" have been showing up in Montana trying to get a glimpse of the life of John Dutton and his—shall we say, complicated—family and their Yellowstone Ranch in  Western Montana's Glacier Country . For those fans who have asked for locations to visit on their next trip to Western Montana, we've got you covered. Please be respectful of those who live and work at these establishments as you are fulfilling your “Yellowstone” fan obsession throughout the region.

  • 1 The Train Station

  • 3 Montana Livestock Association
  • 4 Glen's Cafe

The Train Station:  This is the "top secret" location where the Duttons and associates dump the bodies of their foes. On the show, the location is just over the Wyoming border, but in filming reality it is a highway turnout on U.S. Highway 93 south of Darby in Sula, Montana, at Sula Peak Road 5727. If you find it, beware of your footing so you don't end up like the Duttons' enemies!

Stop at Sula Country Store and Resort in Sula off US-93.

Yellowstone Ranch:  Just a few miles south of  Darby , Montana, on US-93 sits a beautiful piece of property called the  Chief Joseph Ranch . This is the site of the Yellowstone Ranch, home of the Dutton family. The ranch is not accessible for tours and the driveway has a gated entrance, often with a guard in place. The Yellowstone Ranch sign and the white barns are visible from the highway, and while pulling off the highway to take pictures is not encouraged, if you must, PLEASE watch for cars, and do not block the driveway.

Insider Tip:  When not used for filming,  Chief Joseph Ranch's cabins  are rented out on Airbnb and tours of the ranch are offered with each guest-cabin stay. These cabins are known as Lee Dutton's cabin and Rip's Cabin. Both cabins sleep up to eight guests where you can live like a Dutton—just stay out of the horse trough, please.

Stop in Darby at  Double H Custom Hat Company and get a custom cowboy hat by Jimmy "the hat man."

Montana Livestock Association:  Scenes from season four include protests outside the Montana Livestock Association where Kayce Dutton is the commissioner. You will find that downtown  Hamilton , Montana, is the prime location for those scenes at 163 S. Second Street. While scoping out the downtown Hamilton location, take some time to explore the Bitterroot Valley's largest community. Stop in the local galleries, breweries and host of restaurants and cafés that call downtown Hamilton home.

Glen's Café in Florence: North of Hamilton in the little burb of  Florence  sits a small log cabin café that's been family owned and operated since 1972.  Glen's Café  is known for its delicious pies. This is where John Dutton buys a steak dinner for his arch nemesis Garrett (Jamie's real dad). It's a great stop for breakfast or lunch, just don't forget to grab a slice of—or a whole—pie. You won't be disappointed. Open daily, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Community Medical Center  (not Bozeman Deaconess) in Missoula is where John Dutton recovers at the beginning of season four after being shot in the cliffhanger of season three. A park bench outside of Community Medical Center is also where Beth meets young Carter.

Ruby's Café , located at 2101 Regent Street in Missoula, is home to the unforgettable shoot-out scene where Rip pulls the bad guy through the window, but not in time to save Sheriff Donnie Haskell. Stop at  Ruby's Café  for a great breakfast, sandwich or burger and fries. Open 6 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The intersection of  Railroad and Woody streets  in downtown Missoula is where Summer holds the anti-farming protest that takes place outside of the Livestock Association's "Livingston" Field Office and John Dutton comes to intervene. On Saturdays starting in May this area is home to the  Missoula Farmers Market , which was recently ranked number four on USA Today's 10 Best Farmers Markets list. The trial of Summer is held in the beautiful  Missoula County Courthouse  in downtown Missoula. Yellowstone 's Dutton Ranch Is a Real Property—And Yes, You Can Actually Stay There

How to live like John Dutton and co. for a week—without all the drama.

preview for Yellowstone: Season 5 Official Trailer (Paramount Network)

Their problems may be ridiculous and, consequently, make for great TV— the super-sized fifth season of Yellowstone premiered on Paramount yesterday— but all those superficial trappings of extreme wealth sure do look fun. John Dutton, like Logan Roy, also prefers whirlybirds as his primary mode of transport, and broods over his crumbling empire from the plush, dimly lit, wood-paneled confines of his lair, in his really big house, on his colossal ranch.

yellowstone filming location

While no one would ever really want to be in John's shoes, what with greedy property developers and murderous rivals constantly hot on his spurs, it's hard to resist the allure of a sumptuous western lodge surrounded by not much else but wild horses and vistas so impossibly gorgeous they look like CGI (except they're not). And it becomes quite easy to understand why John is willing to go to such extremes to protect it all. Wouldn't you?

That Yellowstone 's Dutton Ranch isn't a set on the Paramount lot in L.A. but a real-life working ranch in the Bitterroot Valley of Montana only perpetuates the dream. Not to mention the fact that you can actually stay at the place, waking up to the same wide open skies and rolling hills and snowcapped mountains that greet John, Beth, Rip, and co. at the crack of dawn each day.

yellowstone filming location

Situated along the same trail once traversed by Lewis and Clark, the Chief Joseph Ranch—as the Dutton Ranch is officially called—was homesteaded by settlers in 1880. Thirty-four years later, the 2,500-acre property was purchased by federal judge Howard Clark Hollister and glass tycoon William Ford, who commissioned architectural firm Bates & Gamble to build the main 6,000 square-foot lodge—portrayed onscreen as John's home—and brought in the largest herd of Holstein cattle west of the Mississippi.

Today, its current owners, who received a cold call from Yellowstone producers asking if their home could be turned into a set for the series , operate their Darby, Montana property as both a guest ranch and working ranch when the show isn't filming. Two cabins on property are available for bookings (the main lodge is a private home, unfortunately, though tours of the ranch and sets are included with each reservation) and will look familiar to Yellowstone devotees: Lee's cabin as seen in season 1 and Rip's (and later Kayce's) cabin from seasons 1 and 2. Both can sleep up to 8 (rates start at $1,200 per night for 4 guests and $50 per additional guest). Meals aren't provided but the cabins are equipped with a full kitchen and outdoor grill. There are grocery stores in town but why not do as a real rancher might and go fish for your dinner in the Bitterroot River? When in Rome...

You Can Stay at the Real Dutton Ranch From 'Yellowstone' — Here's How

Sans family drama, we hope.

visit yellowstone ranch in montana

Let me let you in on a little secret: Yellowstone is one of the best shows on television. There is no argument here. It has drama oozing out of its pours, it has a plotline that just won't quit, and it has Kevin Costner . Though that should be enough, it's got one more thing going for it we should mention: A stunning set location in the Montana wilderness that will make you say, "I want to be there," right from episode one. Well, guess what fans, now you can be.

As Town & Country reported, the real Dutton Ranch is located in Darby, Montana, and it's just as glorious as you'd expect. It also happens to have cabins available for rental.

"The property on which the ranch sits was located in the western part of lands inhabited by the Salish tribe for hundreds of years," the website for Chief Joseph Ranch reads. "When Lewis and Clark entered the upper Bitterroot Valley in September 1805, they followed a trail used by the native tribes. The Nez Perce also annually traveled the trail south to reach the bison hunting grounds in the Big Hole Valley, often banding together with the Salish to counter threats from other tribes, notably the Blackfoot."

The land was then homesteaded by settlers in 1880 before being sold to federal judge Howard Clark Hollister and glass tycoon William Ford, who built the main lodge, which is now used as John Dutton's home in the show.

"In the early 1950s, the Ford and Hollister Ranch was sold and renamed the Chief Joseph Ranch, in honor of the great Nez Perce chief and his journey through the property," the website adds. "Today, the ranch serves as the home of the fictional Dutton Ranch on Paramount Network's television sensation Yellowstone ."

The land still functions as a working farm. However, the current owners have offered up two cabins for rental: Lee Dutton's cabin and Rip's Cabin.

"The Fisherman Cabin overlooks the Bitterroot River, providing 360-degree views of the Bitterroot Mountains and the Sapphire Mountains," the owners explain on their website of the Lee Dutton cabin. "Built in 1916, the cabin served as housing for the lodge's domestic staff. Currently, the cabin serves as a guest cabin utilized by fishermen and vacationers in the Bitterroot Valley."

In total, the home can sleep up to eight guests spread across several spacious bedrooms. The cabin begins at $1,200 per night for up to four guests, with a $50 surcharge per each additional guest.

As for Rip's cabin, it too can sleep up to eight guests in a bit more rustic of a setting. It includes two primary suites with a full kitchen and two massive porches so you can sit out and stare at the gorgeous landscape for as long as you'd like. That cabin starts at $1,500 per night for up to four guests, with a $50 surcharge per each additional guest.

A tour of the ranch and the set locations is also included in every rental, making it a steal for true fans of the show. Ready to rent? Check out its availability here .

How Yellowstone Fans Can Visit The Dutton's Lodge In Real Life

Kevin Costner staring

Since its premiere in 2018, Paramount Network's "Yellowstone" has become a cultural phenomenon. For its latest season, ratings skyrocketed beyond expectations, earning the largest cable ratings for a TV series since 2017 (via The Wrap ). In the age of streaming, "Yellowstone's" massive same-day ratings are certainly a rarity.

In the age of streaming, the show's massive appeal has also translated into a genuine fanbase. At the "Yellowstone" shop , you can find anything from phone cases to glassware to cardboard cutouts of the characters. Even workwear brand Wrangler has created its own line of "Yellowstone" clothing and apparel. Beyond merchandise, the show has launched creator Taylor Sheridan's own TV empire, including the "Yellowstone" spin-offs  "1883" and the forthcoming "1923."

The franchise has reignited interest in the American Western, but it's also generated interest in the cowboy lifestyle and the great outdoors again. Alongside the Dutton family and every other character on the show, most viewers would say that the Montana landscapes and the ranch itself are characters in their own right.

It thus comes as no surprise that fans have started to venture out to the real-life ranch where "Yellowstone" is filmed. The Yellowstone Dutton Ranch is actually the Chief Joseph Ranch, located in Darby, Montana. It's available for rent if you're willing to pay.

Visitors can book a cabin on the Chief Joseph Ranch

To stay at the Chief Joseph Ranch and see those breathtaking mountain views, the cost will be steep for the average person but may be well worth it for fans of the show. The Chief Joseph Ranch website lists two cabins available for rent, with bookings dependent on the "Yellowstone" filming schedule. For up to four guests, the Lee Dutton Cabin goes for $1,200 a night, meanwhile, Rip's Cabin — which fans will recognize as the foreman's cabin on the show — is $1,500 a night. Each cabin can be booked directly through the website, dependent on availability. All reservations also come with a tour of the ranch.

The Chief Joseph Ranch is still a working farm, and it has a storied history . The land the ranch sits on was once occupied by the Salish Native American tribe, but it derives its name from Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce. "Chief Joseph led his people across the ranch in his flight from the U.S. Army during the Nez Perce War in the summer of 1877," the website informs. Later, the land was homesteaded by settlers, where it became an apple orchard. When tycoon William S. Ford purchased the ranch, he built the main lodge that is best known today as the Dutton family headquarters. Many decades later, the ranch was eventually named after Chief Joseph, in honor of his and his people's fight across the land.

CHIEF JOSEPH RANCH

Frequently asked questions, does the ranch offer tours without a rese rvation.

No, Chief Joseph Ranch d oes not off er tours without a cabin reservation (see Cabins and Reservation Policies for m ore information).

Can I take photos of the Dutton Ranch sign at the gate?

We welcome the large number of Yellow stone fans who stop at our gates to take photos of the Dutton Ranch sign. Please be courteous and do not block the driveway. During filming, there will be security at the gates. The Security company will not allow photos at that time due to the need to keep the drive open for cast and crew.

How was your ranch chosen for the location of Yellowstone?

The Reader's Digest version of the story is that it was a cold call. We did not have the ranch listed as a film location. We are humbled and honored that Paramount chose our ranch as the setting of this amazing series.

What locations are used for filming at the ranch?

The lodge great room, kitchen, back porch, front porch, helipad, and yard, as well as the following locations:

Armory

Rip's cabin

Lee’s cabin

Trapper cabin

Barns, including the corrals, arena, round pen, bunkhouse, and fields

Woods, cemetery, and entrance

Rip’s boyhood home

Several locations on the Bitterroot River property of the ranch

Where is the closest airport?

Missoula International Airport (MSO) is the closest airport to the ranch.

It has been our experience that flights through Denver International Airport often have delays that can potentially bump a flight into Missoula to the next day. There are direct flights from Salt Lake City International Airport and Minneapolis/ St. Paul International Airport that we use from different parts of the country that usually arrive on time. Our suggestion is that you attempt to book the earliest flight possible into Missoula with the fewest connections. Since we are  are fully booked, we cannot extend a stay or compensate a missed night due to travel delays.

If you are booking a trip in the winter months or in our fire season (August and September), we suggest you consider travel insurance.

Should we rent a car?

Can i fish on my own or do i have to use a guide.

Although we recommend fishing with a guide or outfitter, you can fish on your own. You may fish on one mile of ranch property bordering the Bitterroot River or we can direct you to nearby fishing accesses. If you want a guided float, we can put you in touch with the outfitters we use or you can hire your own.

When is the best time to fish in Western Montana?

Any day is a great day to fish in Montana! Fishing starts in mid to late March with the Skwala stonefly hatch providing first real dry fly action . There are 23 hatches from January through November. The Bitterroot is not fishable during the spring, snow melt run-off which usually begins around May and lasts through mid-June. Fishing ramps open again during late June and continue to remain open into the late fall.

Click her e to see hatches in western Montana provided by the Missoulian Angler.

What are typical temperatures at Chief Joseph Ranch?

Springtime temperatures range between 45° and 75° with crisp mornings and cool evenings. Summer days are warm and sunny, anywhere from 65° to 103° and may cool down to 45° at night. Fall tends to be a bit warmer than spring, with temperatures between 50° and 80° during the day, and dropping as low as 30° after sunset. Winter days are typically 25° to 45° with overnight temperatures in the low 20s. Weather can be unpredictable; storms can occur with little warning and temperatures can drop quickly, so we recommend dressing in layers.  For current and monthly weather conditions click on the Accuweather link here .

Are children allowed at Chief Joesph Ranch?

Absolutely!

Are pets allowed at Chief Joseph Ranch?

No. Chief Joseph Ranch does not allow pets.

May I bring our horses?

Yes. Horses may be pastured or corralled at your preference.

The minimum cost is $25 per day for two horses.

Do you rent the ranch for weddings?

We receive many requests each year for weddings. Unfortunately, that is not a service we offer.

Can I receive mail and overnight packages while I am vacationing at Chief Joseph Ranch?

Please be sure the item is marked with your name and arrival date. UPS is the most reliable shipping provider for our area.

Can we book a stay in the lodge?

The ranch was ran as a Bed & Breakfast from 2004 to 2012, allowing guests to stay in the lodge. However, when our family purchased the ranch, we closed the Bed & Breakfast and transitioned to a guest ranch with cabin rentals. The lodge is now our family home.

What do you of fer for rentals?

We have two cabins for rent to guests. The Ben Cook Cabin (Rip's cabin in Season 1 and Kayce's cabin in Season 2) and the Fisherman Cabin (Lee's cabin in Season 1 and Season 2).

Both cabins sleep up to 8 guests, have a full kitchen, and a grill.

Do you have laundry services on the ranch?

Each cabin is equipped with a new washer and dryer. Dry cleaning and professional laundry is available in Hamilton, Montana.

Are there meals served on the ranch?

No. We do not serve meals on the ranch. Each cabin has a full kitchen as well as an outdoor grill. However, we can suggest local caterers who can provide meals in your cabin if desired.

Is there a grocery store nearby?

Yes, People’s Market in Darby is 2 miles from the ranch. There are also several grocery stores in Hamilton which is a short 25 minute drive. If you have gluten restrictions or other dietary needs, we recommend The Good Food Store in Missoula.

What about local restaurants?

There are three restaurants in Darby as well as several in Hamilton. We are happy to make suggestions regarding dining options. We can also suggest local caterers who can provide meals in your cabin.

Here Are All the Locations Where 'Yellowstone' Is Filmed

Including the Dutton ranch!

preview for Yellowstone: Season 5 Official Trailer (Paramount Network)

Every item on this page was chosen by a The Pioneer Woman editor. We may earn commission on some of the items you choose to buy.

Of course, the real star of the show is the gorgeous Dutton Ranch. It's set on sprawling fields with looming mountains and clear blue skies. But there are other points of interest, like Beth's office and scenes from in town. So, you might be wondering: Where exactly is Yellowstone filmed? And is the Dutton Ranch real? Before you get ready to binge-watch every single existing episode of Yellowstone (and shows like Yellowstone ), here's everything you need to know about the Yellowstone filming locations.

Where is Yellowstone filmed?

yellowstone filming locations

It's no secret that the majority of Yellowstone is shot outdoors. The show is based around a working cattle ranch in Montana. But, surprisingly, most of seasons 1 to 3 were filmed in the state of Utah, where the actual Yellowstone National Park reigns. In fact, The Salt Lake Tribune reported that 70 to 75 percent of seasons 1 to 3 were filmed across the state of Utah. Marshall Moore, the VP of Operations over at Utah Film Studios, once told Deseret News that Yellowstone "was the largest show that has ever come to the state of Utah."

To get a little more specific: Park City, Ogden, and Spanish Fork were all prominent locations for production of the show.

Though, it's important to note that this information does not include scenes at the fictional Broken Rock Indian Reservation. Instead, these scenes were filmed at the Crow Indian Reservation , located in southern Montana. And if we're mapping it out, you'd be on the road for 7 hours when driving from the reservation to the show's ranch.

These days, the Yellowstone cast spends most of their time in Montana to film on a real-life ranch in the state where the show is meant to take place. And from the looks of it, cast members, like Hauser who plays Rip Wheeler, are back on Montana grounds to finish filming the last episodes.

"Good morning #montana I’ve missed ya old friend," Hauser wrote. "If you are going to rise, you might as well shine."

Is the Dutton Ranch real?

where is yellowstone filmed

Yes! The Dutton family's gorgeous log cabin is actually a 5,000-square foot mansion located on Chief Joseph Ranch near Darby, Montana. Just like on TV, it's a real working cattle ranch and family home—and it's totally stunning, of course.

"On the ranch, we're actually filming where it's actually set. It's almost like the most central character," Kevin Costner said in an interview with Vanity Fair . "You step outside and you see running horses and men working and the weather dictates what you do."

Can you visit the set of Yellowstone ?

Once again, yes! When Yellowstone is not filming on the 2,500-acre ranch, the owners rent out some of the cabins on the property to visitors . Guests can spend their time fishing, horseback riding, and hiking through the area's beautiful mountains. (All while fantasizing about John Dutton showing up, of course.)

Is Yellowstone filmed in both Texas and Montana?

That's right! Season 4 and season 5 part 1 stirred up plenty of new drama, but outside of that, did you notice the change of scenery from the first three seasons? According to The Salt Lake Tribune , season 4 was filmed almost exclusively in Montana. The decision to stop any production in Utah was largely financial, because the state's "limited tax incentive program will not provide [the show] with the same rebates" they previously received.

people riding horses in a river

The same is to be said for season 5 as well. There were a handful of different Montana cities used in the first half of the most recent season (which aired back in November 2022). More specifically, Helena, Montana—the state's actual capital—was an important location used. This is where Beth’s office scenes take place.

Though, some scenes were also shot in Texas, too. Citizens of the southern state got surprise of a lifetime when the show's cast and crew showed up in their small town to shoot at a local cafe for season 4.

Mary Anderson, the owner of Mary's Brazos Cafe in Parker County, North Texas, "couldn't believe it was actually happening."

"The street on the other side [of the cafe] was lined up with my customers watching and trying to see what was going on," Anderson told Outsider . "It was awesome."

When asked why he decided to film at Mary's, Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan told local news it was "because that's where we have breakfast when I'm here."

And now that we know Sheridan's new show 6666 is based on a ranch in Texas, this makes a whole lot more sense!

Spend the Night at Yellowstone ’s Dutton Ranch

The real-life chief joseph ranch in western montana rents out two cabins on the property..

The scenic backdrop for Dutton Ranch in the hit series Yellowstone on Paramount Network is the Bitterroot River Valley in Western Montana. With sunset views of Trapper Peak, the real-life Chief Joseph Ranch is a family-owned guest and working ranch that now plays host to some of our favorite television characters.

Dutton Ranch

Although the Dutton Ranch lodge itself isn’t available to rent (it is the family home of the current owners), there are two cabins available: The Ben Cook Cabin (Rip’s cabin in season 1 and Kayce’s cabin in season 2) and the Fisherman Cabin (Lee’s cabin in seasons 1 and 2). According to the ranch website, both cabins sleep eight guests and have a full kitchen and a grill.

Dutton Ranch

While tours of the property are only available for those who book at stay at the ranch, Yellowstone fans are welcome to stop by the gates and take pictures of the Dutton Ranch sign. (However, if filming is taking place, security will not allow pictures at that time.)

Not surprisingly, both cabins at Chief Joseph Ranch are currently completely booked—however, any updates regarding reservations will be made to the ranch website. Time to bookmark that page and start making travel plans to Dutton Ranch for the future!

Attention all Yellowstone TV show fans, we found the ultimate treat-yourself experience! By the way, if you haven’t yet hopped on the Yellowstone bandwagon, you’re in the minority; the show was the most-watched summer series on cable in 2019, even before we all took up binge-watching as a hobby.

You can now stay at Yellowstone ranch and live like the Duttons on this real-life, functioning Dutton ranch — the filming site of the hit Paramount Network television show. The ranch is located in Montana’s Bitterroot Valley and yes — it’s as beautiful in real life as the show depicts.

Yellowstone Wranglers In Front Of Barn

Chief Joseph Ranch

Chief Joseph Ranch in Darby, Montana , is a working ranch and family homestead with guest houses available to rent. Oh yeah, and it’s also occasionally taken over by the fictional Dutton family for Yellowstone filming.

The ‘‘Yellowstone Dutton Ranch’’ sign left on display all year long is emblematic of how the Libel family has embraced the show’s popularity. The two cabins they offer for rent when there’s no filming going on have even been renamed into the “Lee Dutton” and the “Rip Wheeler” cabins respectfully, as a way to pay tribute to the characters from the Yellowstone TV show that reside at this grand ranch.

The ranch itself has a rich history, similar to the show, dating back to the 18th century when the land was home to the Salish tribe. Louis and Clark stumbled upon the land in 1805 when they followed a trail set by the native tribe. The Nez Perce tribe regularly traveled the same trail and often joined forces with the Salish to counter threats. During the Nez Perce War in 1877, Chief Joseph led his tribe across the present-day ranch while fleeing the United States Army. Shortly after, in 1880, the 2,500-acre property was eventually settled and a ranch was born — originally known as the Shelton Ranch.

The ranch passed through a few owners’ hands since then. However, the giant log cabin lodge, prominent in many Yellowstone scenes as the main family home, was built in 1914. The guesthouses and massive dairy barns routinely showcased on the show were also built during this period. When the show isn’t filming, the current ranch owners live in the lodge, use the barns for dairy cattle, and, most importantly, rent the guesthouses as luxury ranch vacation homes in a rustic setting.

Yellowstone Kayce and wife, Monica, at new cabin

Yellowstone fans will recognize the guesthouses as Lee Dutton’s cabin, son of John Dutton, from season 1, while the other cabin available is Rip’s in season 1, then Kayce’s in season 2. We’re not going on the record promising that you’ll morph into Rip by staying in his former (fictional) homestead, but as Beth Dutton says, “If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck…” Although the main lodge is not available for guests, all cabin guests are welcome to tour the full property and filming locations.

Yellowstone Rip in front of Yellowstone barn

Lee Dutton’s Cabin – Gem of the Dutton Ranch

The fisherman cabin.

Lee Dutton’s Cabin is The Fisherman Cabin in the real world of Chief Joseph Ranch. The beautiful cabin originally served to house the ranch’s staff before becoming a guesthouse and then Hollywood famous. The Fisherman Cabin overlooks the Bitterroot River and provides sweeping views of the surrounding Bitterroot and Sapphire Mountains.

The Fisherman Cabin sleeps up to 8 guests and is $1,200 per night (up to 4 guests; each additional is $50/night extra). The cabin has full amenities, including a kitchen and grill, to prepare and serve up the freshly caught fish out of Bitterroot River.

If this is a little over your budget, you can always opt to glamp in Yellowstone and experience the nature while still having indoor luxuries.

Rip’s Cabin

The ben cook cabin.

Rip’s cabin, The Ben Cook Cabin , is slightly larger, as any head wrangler deserves! Ben Cook cabin also sleeps 8 guests for $1,500 per night (up to 4 guests; each additional is $50/night extra). Rip’s cabin also provides stunning views of the Montana landscape and has full amenities for a comfortable ranch stay.

Both cabins include tours of the set and filming locations, along with access to most of the ranch property for horses and fishing. The tour itself makes the nightly price worth it for any superfan! Non-guests are never allowed on the property, so booking a few nights is the only exclusive way in. The ranch does state that passersby are allowed to stop and take a photo in front of the infamous front Yellowstone Dutton Ranch sign, but only when the cast isn’t filming, so we don’t recommend taking any chances.

Editor’s Note: Although Chief Joseph Ranch will be available in the future for guest house rentals, they are currently paused due to the Yellowstone filming schedule. In the meantime, check out these Montana farm vacation rentals that feel like the ranch!

And if you want to experience staying in the home of the Yellowstone star, Kevin Costner, you can rent in his ranch in Aspen, Colorado .

Can you see the Chief Joseph Ranch from the road?

Yes, the Yellowstone Ranch sign and the white barns are visible from the highway. However, pulling off the highway to take pictures is not encouraged. Also, bear in mind that if you want to pay a visit you may be in for a disappointment. The ranch is private property, and most of the time it is not accessible for tours because of the filming that’s going on there.

Why is Yellowstone drama so popular?

Yellowstone has a broad audience because it tells the story of working-class people, the Dutton family, and highlights the struggles and values of living in rural areas. It’s entertaining and addictive because it offers a Western-style theme with crime stories, interesting characters, and enough socio-political engagement to elevate the material. In other words, it has everything you want in a drama series.

Is a trip to Yellowstone National Park really worth it?

Yes, you certainly won’t make a mistake if you decide to take a trip to Yellowstone National Park. The best time of year to pay it a visit is in August or September because you are almost always guaranteed to see the bison and elk. One of the best ways to see the wonders and famous spots in Yellowstone is to hit the trails either on your own or with the help of a professional. To fully experience the best aspects of the park, you’ll need to plan for at least three days.

What is the closest town to the Yellowstone Ranch?

Chief Joseph Ranch is located 1 mile south of Darby along the Bitterroot River and if you are not taking a family trip by car, Missoula International Airport is the nearest airport to the ranch. Conveniently located restaurants in Darby include The Bandit Brewing, the Montana Cafe, and the Blue Joint. This small town offers unique shops, amenities, and a friendly atmosphere, with great recreational opportunities in every direction.

Who owns the ranch that Yellowstone is filmed on?

Shane Libel and his family currently own the Chief Joseph Ranch (Dutton Ranch). The historic log home where many of the “Yellowstone” scenes are shot is a real working cattle ranch and a family home. When the 2,500-acre ranch is not used for filming, the owners rent out the cabins on the property to visitors. You should definitely book a stay because the filming location is even more breathtaking in person.

Where is 'Yellowstone' Filmed? Here's What to Know About the Real-Life Dutton Ranch

For Yellowstone fans, there's nothing as majestic and mysterious as the Dutton Ranch. In the fictional show, the picturesque ranch is located in Montana, close to Yellowstone National Park . Bordering the ranch is the Broken Rock Reservation, where tensions run high between those who live on and own the land. The reservation is hell-bent on reclaiming the land that once belonged to its people, but Yellowstone character John Dutton isn't willing to give up his family's legacy without a fight.

Even though this is a Hollywood production, Yellowstone fans may be surprised to learn that the show didn't exclusively film in the Big Sky state. That leaves you wondering: Where is Yellowstone filmed? For the first three seasons of the series, production primarily took place in Utah, with seasons 4 and 5 moving filming almost entirely to the Duttons' home state of Montana. Now, the show is fully filmed in the state where the series takes place, with the exception of occasional scenes down in creator Taylor Sheridan 's home state of Texas. The Yellowstone cast and crew love it up in Montana so much that some, such as Luke Grimes , have opted to move there full time.

Luckily for fans, there are several locations you can visit and feel like a real-life cowboy or cowgirl — including the actual ranch that serves as the Dutton family's home on the popular series.

The Yellowstone Ranch

visit yellowstone ranch in montana

Seasons 4 and 5 of Yellowstone are filmed at Chief Joseph Ranch , a real-life working cattle ranch in the small mountain town of Darby, Montana. The white ranch with the iconic black "Y" is where all Yellowstone scenes are filmed. While the interior scenes were filmed on a sound stage in Utah for seasons 1-3, the cast and crew transitioned to the ranch to film seasons 4-5. While the actual ranch is closed when filming occurs, the ranch has two guest houses that can be rented for visitors who want the full cowboy experience. The two cabins are aptly named Lee Dutton's Cabin and Rip Wheeler 's Cabin, and they feature the same decor and interior shown on the show. It should be noted that the cabins can only be rented when the show is not actively filming.

Lee Dutton's Cabin was constructed in 1916 and is used as a vacation rental for fishermen and tourists to the Bitterroot Valley. It's two stories and can accommodate eight guests. Rip's Cabin features a loft and can also accommodate up to eight guests. Each cabin starts at $1,500 per night to rent, but it comes with a full tour of the lodge and all the sets for Yellowstone . It's truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience for Yellowstone fans.

Crow Indian Reservation

The Crow Indian Reservation doubles as the set for the Broken Rock Reservation in Yellowstone . The Crow Indian Reservation is the largest American Indian reservation in Montana, sprawling 2.2 million acres, and is only about 10 miles from Billings. If you want to visit, head to the reservation in August for the annual Crow Fair. Tourists can attend an authentic powwow; however, flash photography is prohibited during the performances.

Darby, Montana

Part of what makes Yellowstone so incredible is the shots of the land where the story takes place. Several of the scenes of the breathtaking valley are filmed in the Bitterroot Valley near the town of Darby. Darby sits in the western part of Montana, on the border of Idaho. Visitors can enjoy an antiques shop and old-time candy store, go fly fishing and go on scenic hikes. Those lucky enough can score an overnight stay at Chief Joseph Ranch for the full Yellowstone experience.

Ogden, Utah

Ogden is a city and the county seat of Weber County, Utah, United States, approximately 10 miles east of the Great Salt Lake

On the show, the Schwartz & Meyer bank building is located in Salt Lake City, Utah. The real building is located not too far away in Ogden, Utah. While in Ogden, you can take a walk around Ogden's 25th street, which is filled with boutiques, bars and restaurants. Several scenes from Yellowstone were filmed along the iconic street.  The Outlaw Saloon — aka cowboy hangout — is a country nightclub in Ogden. Depending on what night you visit, you can take a free dance class or see an up-and-coming band.

While in Utah, you can take a short drive to the Spanish Fork Fairgrounds, where several of the rodeo scenes were filmed. Production also took place in Park City during the show's first several seasons. Dan Jenkins' sprawling, fictional lodge is actually the famous Nicklaus Clubhouse located at the Promontory in Park City, Utah. While visits to the clubhouse can cost a pretty penny, visitors can play a round of golf, visit the equestrian center or ski, depending on the time of year.

The Governor's Office

Just like in the show, the scenes filmed in the governor's office are filmed in Helena, Montana, at the Capitol building. You can visit the Capitol grounds every day except for holidays, and a self-guided tour is available for free. On days when the show is filming, visitors are prohibited from certain areas of the buildings.

Western Montana

Starting in season 4, the entire production moved to western Montana and Missoula to shoot. While many of the scenes had previously been shot in Utah, The Salt Lake Tribune reported that the tax incentives just couldn't compete with what Montana offered.

Venus, Texas

Parts of season 4 and season 5 are filmed in the small Texas town of Venus. Tourists can visit the charming old square in downtown Venus, which is about 30 miles from the nearest major city, Arlington. While in town, you can dine at Mary's Brazos Cafe  and eat like a real cowboy.

Live Like a Dutton at the Real 'Yellowstone' Ranch

The Dutton ranch is real, and you can stay there!

visit yellowstone ranch in montana

The success of Paramount's Yellowstone series hinges on more than dysfunction and drama. Watching the Dutton family saga play out against one of America's most beautiful backdrops is a big part of why fans can't get enough of the neo-western.

Fortunately for aspiring cattle scions, Yellowstone isn't complete fiction. As Town & Country recently pointed out, Dutton Ranch is a real-life ranch in Darby, Montana. And not only are those endless blue skies, snow-capped mountains, and quintessentially country buildings 100% real , but you can stay there too!

In the series, Dutton Ranch borders Yellowstone National Park, though in reality, the filming location is more than 200 miles away in western Montana.

Situated on 2,500 acres in rugged Bitterroot Valley, Chief Joseph Ranch was first was settled in 1880 and was later turned into an apple orchard. The property was purchased by federal judge Howard Clark Hollister and glass tycoon William Ford in 1914. They spent three years constructing the main 6,000 square-foot lodge (John's home on the series) and brought in the largest herd of Holstein cattle west of the Mississippi.

Today, when it's not being used for filming, this working ranch doubles as a guest ranch and a family home. Two cabins (Lee's and Rip's) are available for bookings, though they're currently booked for the remainder of 2021. Both cabins can sleep up to eight with rates starting at $1,200 per night. Chuckwagons aren't included.

Tips for planning a dude ranch vacation in Montana

If you’re planning a dude ranch vacation in Montana, you may find yourself getting a little bit stressed when organizing the trip.

Doesn’t it always seem to feel as though you’re forgetting something? That’s where we come in!

Here are my top tips to keep in mind when planning a dude ranch vacation in Montana:

Check for family-friendly activities

If you are traveling with kids, then the types of activities offered by a ranch is something that you may want to consider. Are there family-friendly activities?

More importantly, is this a family friendly ranch? Or, is it an adults-only retreat?

Take into account the age range and preferences of those coming on your getaway and make sure that the ranch has activities that are going to cater to both you and your little ones!

Visit based on weather and seasonal activities

There’s no point in visiting a lakeside ranch with goals of doing some fishing and water-skiing only to realize that the lake is frozen over and they do not offer these activities during the winter season.

Make sure you double check which ranch activities are available during which season and book your trip accordingly!

Inquire about horseback riding levels

Horseback riding is a huge part of the ranch experience – but if you’ve never done it before, you’re probably going to want to start at a beginner level!

Similarly, if you’re a horse riding pro, you don’t want to be limited to basic riding levels the whole time.

Check out the horseriding levels and activities offered by the ranch and ensure that they match up with your own needs and preferences.

Inquire about additional activities (fishing, hiking, etc)

If you have your heart set on enjoying a specific activity during your trip to a ranch, it is always a good idea to inquire about the availability of these before you book your stay.

This is a good move for a number of reasons!

For one, they may be seasonal activities that are not offered during the period that you plan to visit.

They may also have limited slots that require pre-booking. A quick phone call to the ranch can solve a whole lot of hassle when it comes to activities.

Confirm if Wi-Fi and cell service are available

Many ranches these days are leaning into the rustic getaway aspect – which means no Wi-Fi or cell service.

If you are wanting to remain connected to the outside world during your trip, it is definitely a good idea to contact the ranch about this beforehand.

While this information is often listed on the ranch’s website, it is still worth checking in to ensure that nothing has changed; you don’t want to drop off the grid without informing friends and family first!

Pack appropriate clothing for the season

Many ranch activities involve being outdoors and exposed to the elements for long periods of time.

For this reason, it is very important that you pack appropriate clothing for the season!

This means layers of warm jackets, pants, and boots for winter, and sunhats, swimwear, and some flip-flops for summer.

Many ranch websites actually include a section that outlines some clothing and equipment that they recommend guests bring depending on the season.

Check cancellation policies

If anything crops up that causes you to cancel your trip, you don’t want to be caught off guard by any cancellation fees or policies that you were not previously aware of.

Before booking your stay at a ranch, be sure to check out the cancellation policies!

This can eliminate a whole lot of stress and confusion later on down the line should you need to cancel for any reason.

The Yellowstone Ranch Is Not Only Real, But You Can Stay There

Hang your hat in Rip Wheeler's cabin!

preview for Yellowstone: Season 5 Official Trailer (Paramount Network)

Surprisingly, The Yellowstone Ranch, with its massive white barns and big "Y" decals, is a real place that you can visit. Nestled some five hours away from Yellowstone National Park, the Chief Joseph Ranch—a functioning cattle ranch in Darby, Montana—is the official location for the Dutton family home. It's a 6,000-square-foot mansion, and guests can even rent out two cabins there. According to Parade , the 2,500-acre property was homesteaded by settlers in 1880 and named after Chief Joseph, a chief of the Wallowa band of the Nez Perce tribe. Glass tycoon William S. Ford purchased the location in 1914, until it was eventually sold to ranchers Shane and Abigail Libel.

The Libel family has completely bought into the fame of the show, reportedly leaving the "Yellowstone Dutton Ranch" sign on full display all year long. They also rent two cabins to guests when the series isn't filming—which are rooms that members of the Dutton family live in over the course of the series. On the official website for the ranch, the cabins have even officially been renamed the "Lee Dutton" and "Rip Wheeler" cabins, after the Yellowstone characters that call the Chief Joseph Ranch their home. "We welcome the large number of Yellowstone fans who stop at our gates to take photos of the Dutton Ranch sign," the family wrote on their website , revealing that they were cold-called to be the official location for the Dutton ranch. "We are humbled and honored that Paramount chose our ranch as the setting of this amazing series."

The rest of the series films on a 40,000-square-foot space in Missoula, Montana as well as the 2.2 million acres of The Crow Indian Reservation outside Billings, which is the largest reservation in the state. Crow Nation tribal chairman AJ Not Afraid told Variety back in 2018 that the series was "a more honest, accurate portrayal of the modern American Indian that we’ve seen before." By Season Five , even all the courtroom and government office scenes shoot at the State Capitol Building in Helena. Creator Taylor Sheridan told Deadline during production for Season Four that he was " fortunate that this show shoots on a ranch in Montana," and that they planned to shoot exclusively on location from then on out.

Well, my fellow Yellowstone fans, I know where my next vacation will be.

Where was Yellowstone filmed? The real-life settings you can visit

author_avatar

Popular American TV series “Yellowstone” has captured a loyal audience with its intense drama, complex characters, and stunning cinematography. Now into its fifth season, the show is set in the state of Montana and follow the conflicts of the Dutton family, who run the largest contiguous cattle ranch in the United States.

Beyond the drama that unfolds on screen lie real-life Yellowstone filming locations and breathtaking scenery. We’re diving behind-the-curtain to find out where Yellowstone was actually filmed, and we’ll share the locations so you can visit stunning vistas, historic landmarks, and quaint towns featured on screen.

From the vast expanses of Yellowstone National Park to the picturesque towns dotting the Montana countryside, here is where fans can live a real-life Yellowstone moment under brilliant blue skies where mountains loom above oat-colored fields. Here’s everything you need to know about the Yellowstone filming locations, from real-life ranches to the reservation.

TAKE A TOUR: Western Frontiers

What is Yellowstone?

Created by Taylor Sheridan and John Linson, Yellowstone is a popular Paramount Network TV show that premiered in 2018. Since then the past five seasons has captured the hearts of audiences worldwide with its gripping storytelling and breathtaking scenery.

This fanbase is hooked on the fictional lives on the Dutton family and their ranch. Filled with serious drama, complicated characters, and brilliant scenery, the beautifully shot show is loaded with conflict. We don’t want to give it all away, so you’ll have to watch the series to see how the family clashes with land developers, Native American tribes, and government officials.

This neo-Western drama has a brilliant cast with Kevin Costner as patriarch John Dutton, and actors Luke Grimes, Kelly Reilly and Wes Bentley as part of the Dutton family. Cole Hauser, Kelsey Asbille, Gil Birmingham, and Mo Brings round out the cast.

Where was Yellowstone filmed?

The show is based around a ranch near Yellowstone National Park in Montana. In real life, the park is spread across three states with around 96 percent of the total land area located within Wyoming, three percent in Montana, and one percent in Idaho.

But Utah was chosen as the location for roughly 75 percent of filming for the first three cities. Just a couple of hours from the park, some places in Utah that featured in the series include Park City, Ogden, Spanish Fork, Heber City, Oakley, Kamas, Grantsville and Logan.

For season four and five, production moved to Montana, and outdoor shots continued at Chief Joseph Ranch, a 2,500-acre working ranch in southwestern Montana. The move was to take advantage of a state tax credit.

Where is the Dutton Ranch located?

The Dutton family ranch is located in Montana, but it has a different name. Called the Chief Joseph Ranch, a real family lives and works from this 5,000-square-foot log house each day. It’s located in the town of Darby in southwest Montana.

Apparently the ranch had never been used in a film or TV show before, and the production team cold-called the family to request to use their home as one of the Yellowstone filming locations. The massive house, built in 1914, is so unique that it became another character in the show!

Can you stay at the Dutton Ranch in real life?

Yes! Fans of Yellowstone can sleep in a cabin on the property – so long as the show isn’t filming – for at least three nights. Chief Joseph Ranch is open to the public, and two cabins are available for rent that can sleep up from 4 to 8 people each.

If you dream of staying within the beautiful home, you’re fresh out of luck. The owners have been living in the main residence since they bought the property in 2012. While you can’t stay inside, they will take you on a tour of the ranch and Yellowstone sets.

When you’re not fantasizing about Kevin Costner knocking on the cabin door you can explore the property by horseback, go fishing, or hike the beautiful mountain trails.

Yellowstone fans that don’t want to stay can take a photo of the Dutton Ranch sign on the gate outside of production times.

TOUR YELLOWSTONE: Five Epic National Parks

Is Broken Rock Indian Reservation a real place?

Like the Dutton family ranch, the Broken Rock Indian Reservation is a made-up place. However, filming for the reserve took place on the very real Crow Indian Reservation, which is located just outside of Billings, Montana. The film crew had to get special permission to film at this two million-acre reservation from the Crow Nation tribal chairman, Alvin “A.J.” Not Afraid Jr.

The chairman was skeptical at first as Native Americans are often portrayed in Western film as untrue stereotypes, such as cliché cowboys vs Indians scenes. The show made an effort to portray authentic life on a reservation for the series.

If you want to visit both the ranch and the reservation, there’s a seven-hour drive ahead!

What are the other Yellowstone filming locations?

Yellowstone’s utah filming locations.

More than 20 locations in Utah were used in the first three seasons. The greatest was Ogden, a ski town in winter and haven for mountain biking and hiking in summer. If you wander down 25th Street you’ll find blocks of restaurants, cafés, galleries and shops that were used in the show. Finish out your Odgen experience with a drink at The Outlaw Saloon, and visit the Odgen Pioneer Stadium rodeo.

Venture an hour south of Odgen to Spanish Forks where rodeo scenes for Yellowstone were filmed at the Spanish Fork Fairgrounds. Then visit Park City where Dan Jenkins’ deluxe lodge is found at the Nicklaus Clubhouse at Promontory Point.

Yellowstone’s Montana filming locations

MOntana State Capital in Helena, Montana

Beyond the reservation and ranch, plenty of other Montana locations have been used on the Yellowstone TV series. Let’s start with Missoula, where Ryman Street and Ruby’s Café were the setting for an intense shoot-out scene. Scenes were also shot at the The Missoula County Courthouse and nearby Garlington Building. Half an hour south of Missoula is Glen’s Café, where John Dutton ordered a Salisbury steak. And 19 miles north of Missoula, find Gray Wolf Peak Casino at the southern end of Flathead Indian Reservation.

An hour south of Missoula is Hamilton, where a deadly car chase scene was filmed on Meridian Road and Bear Creek Road. Nearby, the Daly Mansion, an 1800s Victorian home, was used at the governor’s house and is open to the public for tours and weddings.

The governor’s office is filmed at the real-life Montana State Capital in Helena. You can join guided tours in summer to see inside

Texas film locations

Texax entered the script in season four, when darling farm hand Jimmy was relocated to the 6666 Ranch (Four Sixes Ranch). It’s a real-life ranch of the same name, located near Guthrie and founded in 1870.

And a small town café in Texas called Mary’s Brazos Cafe was also used in season four. You can visit it for a coffee and chat with Mary in Parker County, north Texas.

From hot springs to the courthouse: 10 stops on a ‘Yellowstone’-inspired road trip through Montana

The Duttons sure know how to make a lasting impression; follow in their footsteps on this Big Sky Country itinerary

By Mandy Zelinka

Montana is a driving state. When roadtripping through Big Sky Country, you can’t help but notice the vastness of the highways, the beauty of their clouds, and the seemingly endless amount of open spaces. On my 7-hour drive toward Montana from Seattle, I decided to listen to the official Yellowstone podcast .

Fans of the Paramount Network TV series should know that there’s a city in Montana named Dutton. Originally a Great Northern Railway station, it was named for Charles E. Dutton, who was the railroad’s general agent in Helena, Montana.

As we saddle up for season five of the popular series, here are 10 spots on a Montana road trip inspired by Yellowstone . Just don’t find yourself getting dropped off at the “train station.” The area where Dutton associates leave dead bodies is filmed on a real stretch of road along Highway 93 in Sula, Montana, according to the Glacier County Montana tourism board.

A scenic road winds its way through stunning view of mountains and towering trees.

1. Glacier National Park

The best time to road trip to Glacier National Park , or Montana in general, is July through mid-September. From scenic drives, and views like the ones from the Dutton Ranch, to more than 1 million acres of terrain, there’s undoubtedly an epic selfie in there somewhere. Learn about the park’s Indigenous history on a tour with a Blackfeet tribal member .

2. Flathead Lake

Flathead Lake is the largest natural freshwater lake in Montana. It’s hard not to gasp when you approach the stunning, emerald-colored body of water. If you’re looking to stay in a non-fussy place with that million-dollar view, you’ll find the Polson / Flathead Lake KOA nestled in a hill to the side of the lake.

Steam rises from a hot spring that's surrounded by soothing mountain vistas.

3. Wildhorse Hot Springs

Visiting Wildhorse Hot Springs makes me feel like one of the Duttons, who are known to enjoy their scenic outdoor baths. During the day, you’ll find plenty of families, and you’re free to skinny dip after dark. The real beauty is the vastness of the surrounding nature preserve. You can also stay overnight in a teepee, cabin, or campsite.

4. Quinn’s Hot Springs Resort

This place books out a year in advance, and for good reason. As you drive down one of the most scenic highways in the U.S., looking to the right, you’ll see folks meandering about this property decked out in white robes walking with their morning coffee. Quinn’s looks like a place that would make the huckleberry juice worth the squeeze, and where Beth would take a mini-staycation.

5. The Resort at Paws Up

In 1997, Nadine Lipson and her late husband, Dave, came to Montana and bought a working cattle ranch. Animals here include Black Angus cows, mustangs, quarter horses, and a large herd of bison. Together with their enterprising son, Larry, the Lipsons opened The Resort at Paws Up in 2005—it’s like visiting the animals on the Dutton Ranch, without the drama.

6. Nevada City, Montana

According to the Montana Tourism website , “The entire town of Nevada City is a living historical museum. Today it is a famous tourist attraction with many original log buildings and an outstanding collection of old-time music boxes, player pianos and calliopes.” Watch history come alive and experience life in the late 1800s with fun for the whole family.

7. Chief Joseph Ranch

The closest you can get to the fictional Dutton Ranch is by staying at the Chief Joseph Ranch in Darby, Montana, which is where scenes from the show are filmed—just note that it closes for periods of time for filming. The ranch kindly allows fans to take photos at the entrance gate when the show isn’t filming. If you visit, be respectful and don’t block the driveway.

Overnight guests can stay in Lee Dutton and Rip’s cabins and are offered tours of the ranch. Keep in mind it’s located about 4.5 hours from the entrance to Yellowstone National Park .

8. Earthquake Lake

Known as “Quake Lake” (not named after the explosive ending of season three), this body of water was created after an earthquake struck near the west entrance of Yellowstone National Park in August of 1959. The 6-mile lake has a maximum depth of 125 feet and is located mostly within the Custer-Gallatin National Forest .

Season four finally brings the Paramount filming crew to Montana (as opposed to the other three seasons, which were mainly filmed in other locations, like Utah). According to the Glacier County Montana tourism board, scenes from the show were filmed at the Community Medical Center, Ruby’s Cafe , streets downtown, the Garlington Building , and the Missoula County Courthouse —which is open for self-guided tours.

With sprawling meadows, mountain views, gorgeous cabins and incredible barns, Yellowstone Dutton Ranch is any horse lover’s dream facility.

The Dutton family is willing to do whatever it takes to protect their ranch from outside forces eager to take their land.

In the Yellowstone universe, Yellowstone Dutton Ranch is the largest ranch in America . Located in Big Sky Country, it is primarily a cattle and world-class working horse ranch.

The ranch has been in the Dutton family for several generations and John Dutton plans to keep it in the family for several more generations to come. However, maintaining such a large and powerful ranch is no easy task.

Where is the Yellowstone Ranch?

Yellowstone Dutton Ranch is located in Paradise Valley in Park County, Montana. It lies east of Bozeman and west of Livingston.

Yellowstone Dutton Ranch from the Yellowstone TV series

The ranch borders the Broken Rock Reservation and Yellowstone National Park. Thanks to its great location, it is often under the threat of land developers, real estate agents, casino moguls, and the Broken Rock Reservation.

How Big is the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch?

Yellowstone Dutton Ranch is estimated to be around 776,000 acres. In an early episode of Yellowstone, John Dutton says he owns “a ranch the size of Rhode Island,” which is 776,900 acres.

Yellowstone Dutton Ranch has only grown in size since it was founded. In season one, Jamie Dutton made a comment that the ranch is 200,000 acres larger than when he first took over as the attorney.

The largest real-life ranch in America is King Ranch, which consists of a whopping 825,000 acres of land.

Unlike the fictional Yellowstone Dutton Ranch which is all under one fence, King Ranch consists of four tracts of land in southeastern Texas.

visit yellowstone ranch in montana

King Ranch is home to over 35,000 cattle and over 200 Quarter Horses. The facilities of the ranch are divided into four divisions, Santa Gertrudis, the Laureles, the Encino and the Norias, whereas Yellowstone Dutton Ranch is one contiguous plot of land.

Yellowstone Dutton Ranch Facilities

The sprawling ranch consists of a lodge, cabins, bunkhouse, numerous pastures, barns and arenas. The property mostly consists of pastures, though a river does run through it.

The main lodge on the property is the Dutton family home where John Dutton lives. The stunning lodge is 6,000 square feet and has a beautiful rustic wooden design.

There are also two cabins, one where Beth and Rip live, as well as the bunkhouse which the ranch hands call home. The entrance of the ranch includes a wooden sign that says ‘Yellowstone Dutton Ranch’ held up by wooden beams.

There is also the signature white barn with the Yellowstone Dutton brand on the side. Outside the barns are wooden corrals and an outdoor arena.

Yellowstone Dutton Ranch Origin Story

Yellowstone Dutton Ranch was founded in the 1880s by James and Margaret Dutton. James Dutton is the great-great-grandfather of John Dutton.

Yellowstone Dutton Ranch gated entrance

The prequel series to Yellowstone , 1883 , tells the origin story of how the Dutton family moved to Montana and founded Yellowstone Dutton Ranch.

After fleeing poverty in Tennessee, James and Margaret, along with their children Elsa and John, join a European wagon train in Texas.

While the wagon train heads out West to Oregon, the Dutton family decides to make their new home in Montana. The land they settle on becomes the beginning of the formidable Yellowstone Dutton Ranch.

Ever since the first Duttons arrived in Montana, the ranch has remained in the family. A new prequel series, 1923 , will follow two generations of the Dutton family at the beginning of the 20th century as they navigate life through current events of the time.

How Much is the Yellowstone Ranch Worth?

In Yellowstone , Willa Hayes and her firm Market Equities offer John Dutton a whopping $500 million to buy part of Yellowstone Dutton Ranch. The offer was for 50,000 acres of land at a hefty price of $10,000 per acre.

visit yellowstone ranch in montana

While the exact acreage of the ranch has not been revealed, it is approximately 776,000 acres. This means that if the offer of $10,000 per acre was extended for the entire property it would be worth over $7.5 billion.

Realistically, a ranch this size would not sell for that large of a price tag.

In 2016, sports mogul Stan Kroenke purchased W.T. Waggoner Ranch for $725 million.

Main house at the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch

Waggoner Ranch consists of approximately 535,000 acres and is the largest ranch in Texas under one fence. Kroenke’s purchase of the property is believed to be the most expensive ranch sale ever.

Who Owns the Yellowstone Ranch in Real-Life?

Yellowstone Dutton Ranch is a real-life working ranch known as Chief Joseph Ranch. The ranch is owned by Shane Libel and his family, who live there when Yellowstone is not filming.

Chief Joseph Ranch is located in Darby, Montana in Ravalli County. The property sits in Montana’s Bitterroot Valley and is approximately 65 miles south of Missoula.

Aerial view of Yellowstone Dutton Ranch

Unlike its TV counterpart, Chief Joseph Ranch is much smaller, coming in at around 2,500 acres. However, like Yellowstone Dutton Ranch, Chief Joseph Ranch was founded in the 1880s.

Fans of the show can stay at the ranch while it is not used for filming. The ranch has two cabins available for rental The Fisherman Cabin (Lee Dutton’s Cabin) and The Ben Cook Cabin (Rip’s Cabin). Tours of the ranch are only available to those staying on the property.

Fans are welcome to take photos at the iconic Yellowstone Dutton Ranch sign. However, during the filming of the show security will be at the gate and photos are not permitted.

150 Years of Yellowstone

America's first national park was set aside to preserve and protect the scenery, cultural heritage, wildlife, geologic and ecological systems and processes in their natural condition for the benefit and enjoyment of present and future generations. Yellowstone serves as the core of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, one of the last and largest nearly intact natural ecosystems on the planet. Yellowstone has the most active, diverse, and intact collections of combined geothermal features with over 10,000 hydrothermal sites and half the world's active geysers. The park is also rich in cultural and historical resources with 25 sites, landmarks, and districts on the National Register of Historic Places.

Places to Stay In and Near Yellowstone National Park: The Best Cabins, Hotels, and Lodges

By Emily Pennington

23 Places to Stay In and Near Yellowstone National Park

This gallery has been updated with new information since its original publish date.

Yellowstone National Park  is the birthplace of “America’s best idea,” the first national park in the world, and routinely one of the most-visited in the country. The park itself sits atop a highly active supervolcano and is home to the highest concentration of geothermal features on the planet (think powerful geysers, steamy hot springs, and bubbling mudpots). It’s also a fantastic place to spot charismatic megafauna in the wild—wolves, grizzly bears, and bison all reside here.

With so many spectacular sites, it’s no wonder that in-park lodging, including camping, can fill up  six months to one year in advance . Plus, these historic sites often lack the soothing spa treatments and luxe creature comforts that many travelers look forward to after a day of hiking and geyser gazing. Luckily, there are still plenty of options if you’re looking for places to stay in Yellowstone—close to the park and full of great amenities.

Below, you’ll find a list of our all-time favorite Yellowstone National Park lodging hubs and vacation rentals, from gorgeous  glamping sites  to rustic resorts to secluded cabins.

Top places to stay in Yellowstone at a glance:

  • Best for families: Paradise Lodge near Yellowstone
  • Best for views: The Cargill-Earl Guesthouse

Yellowstone visitors hope to catch a glimpse of rare white buffalo calf

Image: white baby calf buffalo birth yellowstone national park rare

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. — Standing at the edge of a bluff overlooking the Lamar River in Yellowstone National Park, TJ Ammond stared through binoculars at hundreds of buffalo dotting the verdant valley below.

Tan-colored calves frolicked near their mothers while hulking bulls wallowed in mud.

As his wife and young children clustered behind him, Ammond panned the vast herd and cried out: “I see a white one!”

“Or no — that’s a pronghorn,” he soon corrected. “It’s white and it’s small.”

Image: rare white buffalo calf spotting

Grizzly bears and wolves are usually the star attractions for wildlife watchers in Yellowstone but this spring, a tiny and exceedingly rare  white buffalo calf  has stolen the show.

White buffalo — also known as bison — are held sacred by many Native Americans who greeted news of the birth of one in Yellowstone as an auspicious sign.

It all began when Kalispell, Montana, photographer Erin Braaten snapped several images of the tiny, ungainly creature nuzzling with its mother on June 4, soon after its birth near the banks of the Lamar River. Braaten and her family had been driving through the park when she spotted “something really white” and got a closer look through her telephoto lens.

They turned around and pulled over to watch and shoot photos of the calf with its mother for over half an hour.

Despite throngs of visitors with scopes and photographers with telephoto lenses in the Lamar Valley, a prime spot for wildlife viewing in Yellowstone, few others saw the calf and no sightings have been reported since. Even Braaten and her family did not see the calf again despite going back to look over the next two days, she said.

As in legend, the calf remains mysterious in life.

Some speculate it was a short one. Bison calves often don’t survive when their herds decide to plunge across waters like the Lamar, which has been flowing high and muddy with mountain snowmelt.

Yet even if it has died, the event is no less significant to Native Americans, said Chief Arvol Looking Horse, spiritual leader of the Lakota, Dakota and the Nakota Oyate in South Dakota, and the 19th keeper of the sacred White Buffalo Calf Woman Pipe and Bundle.

“The thing is, we all know that it was born and it’s like a miracle to us,” Looking Horse said.

The creature’s birth fulfills a Lakota prophecy that portends better times, according to members of the American Indian tribe who caution that it’s also a signal that more must be done to protect the earth and its animals. They plan a ceremony in the coming weeks to commemorate the event.

Word of the white buffalo has meanwhile spread far and wide. Ammond had heard about the white calf on The Weather Channel and was keen to see it on his family’s trip to Yellowstone from Ohio.

Usually, white bison are born in ranch herds due to interbreeding with cattle. They are rare but not unheard of, with births making local headlines every so often.

Two genetic variations, leucism and albinism,  account for  an unusually light-colored animal. Experts doubt the Yellowstone calf is an albino.

In any event, a wild white buffalo is exquisitely rare — maybe even unheard of in Yellowstone, one of the last sanctuaries for free-roaming American bison. The animals once numbered in the tens of millions before commercial hunting drove them to near extinction. Yellowstone’s herd numbers about 5,000.

For Yellowstone’s dedicated wildlife watchers, a good look or photo of a wolf, grizzly — or especially an elusive wolverine or lynx — makes for a good day in the field. A glimpse of the white bison calf would be the privilege of a lifetime.

Employees at several of the businesses that offer guided tours, hikes and horseback rides in Yellowstone said they had not seen the white bison calf. At least one was skeptical the sighting was authentic but a cellphone video provided by Braaten’s son, Zayne Braaten, showing the calf in a wide scene looking very much like the Lamar Valley left little room for doubt the calf is — or was — the real deal.

Amateur photographer Sabrina Midkiff, from Houston, said getting pictures of buffalo calves was the main purpose of her trip to the park this summer. She’d taken thousands of photos so far and wondered if the white calf was hidden somewhere in the crowd in one of her images.

Seeing it would be thrilling, Midkiff said, but she’d heard talk that it may have died — by drowning, getting eaten by wolves or coyotes, or simply being too weak to survive.

“There are a lot of things that could happen out here in the wild,” she said.

Near the site where Braaten said she took her photos, New Mexico native Bob Worthington stood outside his truck Thursday and scoped a distant hillside. He said he’d been visiting Yellowstone for 26 years with a singular focus: Seeing grizzly bears.

Worthington gruffly dismissed a query about the valley’s bison herds. But when the white calf was mentioned, he lit up with a grin.

“I’d love to get to see the little rascal,” he said.

Kevin Costner 'Would Love' to Return to Yellowstone — But Is Waiting on the 'Right Circumstances'

"Who loves it more than myself and Taylor [Sheridan]?" the actor said of the Paramount Network series

Paramount Network

John Dutton's fate is on everyone's minds — and Kevin Costner doesn't exactly have an answer.

On the Today show on June 17, the actor, 69, addressed his contentious exit from Yellowstone as he reiterated that the reason behind the move was purely logistical.

“Number one: I did it for five years, okay, and I wanna work more than once a year. And we lost an entire year, at one point, and I thought, ‘Well that can’t ever happen again,'" he told Savannah Guthrie , adding that "there's a chance to do both of them, but material has to be ready at certain times and we weren’t able to do that."

By "both of them," Costner means his four-part Western epic, Horizon: An American Saga , and the Paramount series, on which he stars as the Dutton family patriarch .

"Who loves it more than myself and Taylor [Sheridan] ?" Costner continued, referring to the series' creator, with whom he'd reportedly had creative differences.

"I've supported that thing and I have loved it. It’s been really important to me. I would love to go back under the right circumstances. I think that all of us want [that]," he said, reiterating that it "needs to be the right circumstances."

"There’s always a chance. I love the thing – you’ve gotta be really clear about that."

Paramount Network / Courtesy Everett Collection

Costner has been clear that he made Yellowstone his "first priority," despite reports stating otherwise, and his lack of involvement in part two of season five — the series' last — was a result of delays in receiving the scripts.

He told Deadline that unfinished scripts and scheduling conflicts "shut down one whole season," delaying the series for over a year, and that led to his exit. The narrative that it was the result of behind-the-scenes tension and creative differences frustrated him.

“ I have taken a beating from those f---ing guys and I know a lot of times where it’s coming from. I just elected not to get into that,” he said. “I made Yellowstone the first priority, and to insinuate anything else would be wrong.”

He's still open to a potential return to the Dutton ranch, though.

In April, he told Entertainment Tonight that he'd "like to be able to [return] but we haven't been able to," adding, "I hope it [works out]."

"Maybe this will circle back to me. If it does and I feel really comfortable with [it], I'd love to do it."

On May 20, production on the final installment of the Western series began in Montana. The final part of season 5 is slated to return in November after facing delays due to the writers' strike.

Per a release, the upcoming episodes will see the Dutton family "amid shifting alliances, unsolved murders, open wounds and hard-earned respect," as the ranch "is in constant conflict with those it borders — an expanding town, an Indian reservation and America's first national park."

‘Yellowstone’ Fans, This Viral Reddit Theory Figured Out If Beth Or Jamie Will Die In Season 5

The Paramount Network show is set to return in November with new episodes.

preview for Yellowstone Cast Through The Years

  • And some folks are waiting have been busy theorizing how the series will unfold—and there's been mention of a surprise death: Jamie (Wes Bentley) or Beth (Kelly Reilly).
  • Though fans started looking at the odds of who could survive, some believe both will because it’ll actually be Summer (Piper Perabo) who gets caught in the crossfire.

This story contains Yellowstone spoilers .

In the blink of an eye, Yellowstone is reaching the end of its road. After co-creator/showrunner Taylor Sheridan decided to conclude the Paramount Network show with season 5 part 2 , new details have slowly emerged about the last six episodes. While some folks are waiting to hear if Kevin Costner is really leaving the cast , others have been busy theorizing how the series will unfold—and there's been mention of a surprise death.

As viewers may remember, in the midseason finale, John (Costner) and Beth (Kelly Reilly) were on the same grim page that Jamie (Wes Bentley) needed to be taken to the train station (a.k.a. killed and tossed into the mass graveyard) after he called for the Montana governor’s impeachment. But Jamie had no plans to go down without a fight and didn't hesitate to hire his own killer to take out Beth.

Though fans started looking at the odds of who could survive, some believe both will because it’ll actually be Summer (Piper Perabo) who gets caught in the crossfire. Back in January, a thread on Reddit grabbed people’s attention with the title “Summer will be killed by Jamie's hitman instead of Beth.”

User @ingrahamtx went on to explain their theory, writing, “Since Summer is living in the main house, I really think Jamie's hitman will mistakenly kill her instead of Beth. That is the only reason I can see why she is in John's house … I can't see Beth getting killed just yet.”

'Yellowstone'

'Yellowstone'

The Yellowstone fandom witnessed the environmentalist activist become romantically involved with John in season 4. After having her prison sentence commuted when he entered office in season 5, she was released under house arrest at John’s house on the Yellowstone ranch. Unsurprisingly, Beth didn't take the news well. After a bloody brawl, Beth and Summer agreed to coexist.

But this may be short-lived if a hired killer fails to confirm the correct blonde woman is in front of them. After reading the initial theory, Yellowstone fans took to the comments section on Reddit to give their two cents.

“Interesting and very possible,” user @oldmanonsilvercreek wrote. “It’s clear that Summer and Beth don’t like each other, but I can definitely see how Beth would be pissed if Summer were killed,” user @justthatugly added, guessing how this might add to the storyline. “It's also something Taylor Sheridan has done before in Sons of Anarchy . When Opie's wife was killed during an attempted hit on Opie,” user @ficadin chimed in, referencing the beloved FX show .

So, have there been hints that this might happen? Well, not exactly, except actress Piper Perabo admitted that she has no idea if Summer will have a future at the 6666 ranch down south. The relocation idea came up in the midseason finale when a bacterial disease called brucellosis threatened to wipe out the Yellowstone cattle if they weren't moved soon.

"I don't know if we start the next [episode] and they're coming back from Texas. I don't know if we're all gonna go to Texas," she told Entertainment Tonight . "I also don't want to imagine a life for Summer in the winter in Montana. She's on house arrest so I hope John comes home or gets her sentence commuted to Texas."

Make of that what you will ...
