He succeeds Casandra Matej, who joined Visit Orlando in January.

“Our Board of Directors is thrilled to introduce a leader of Marc’s caliber into our community and to help guide Visit San Antonio into the future,” said Jeffrey Arndt, chairman of the Visit San Antonio board. “Marc joins an already outstanding team in San Antonio, and possesses the qualifications and expertise to help us navigate through the COVID recovery period and create a lasting impact on our area.”

For the past six years, Anderson has served as Chief Operating Officer for Choose Chicago, the sales and marketing entity for the City of Chicago, and McCormick Place, the largest convention center in North America.  For that worldwide major destination, the Chicago native showcased a unique experience in growing market share for both citywide conventions and leisure/global development (tourism), and now focuses on a new emerging San Antonio market.  Additionally, Anderson has extensive international experience, promoting the United States as well as developing new territories with influential relationships in Canada, China and the Middle East.

“I am thrilled to join the Visit San Antonio team and this vibrant community that is poised for not only an incredible recovery, but extensive growth in the coming years,” Anderson said. “As the seventh-largest city in the United States, San Antonio is experiencing a renaissance unlike many cities in our country. The city’s pro-tourism and pro-business stance was an invigorating and welcome opportunity.

“After all, DMOs are in existence to drive economic impact and tax revenues, increase demand, create new jobs and keep people working and uplift our cities across the world.”

Prior to Choose Chicago, Anderson was the Regional Director of Marketing for The Peninsula Hotels, for which he oversaw the regional sales, marketing, public relations and e-commerce office for all the company’s business development in the Midwest and Canada.

Anderson, a graduate of Drake University, also brings a wealth of industry experience and relationships with him as he is currently on the Board of Directors for the United States Travel Association (USTA), an Executive Committee Member of the Meetings Mean Business Coalition, Co-Chair of the USTA CEO Roundtable and is a member on Destinations International’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee.

Anderson will be joined by his wife, Brooke, and their college-age daughters, Avery and Lily, in relocating to San Antonio.

Arndt, the President and CEO of VIA Metropolitan Transit, stressed that Visit San Antonio’s vacancy drew a “significant talent level” of candidates. He added, “San Antonio should be proud of the level of interest there was in the industry for this position. It was evident to the committee almost immediately that Marc’s ability to perform at the highest level, along with his business acumen, would align very well with the work of the Visit San Antonio team.”

Searchwide Global led the search, bringing several strong candidates from the greater convention and leisure segments, including competitive destination marketing organizations throughout the country. Search committee co-chair Frank Miceli, Senior Vice-President of Sales and Franchise Business Operations for Spurs Sports & Entertainment, said, “As we look to the future, we’re confident that Marc is the right person to lead Visit San Antonio and carry on the long legacy of providing the highest level of service and support to the hospitality community in San Antonio.”

Visit San Antonio’s Chief Operating Officer, Dave Krupinski, has served as the interim President and CEO in the wake of Matej’s departure. “I want to thank Dave for his work in this interim period,” Arndt said. “He is a talented and influential leader for Visit San Antonio and we are thankful for his continued contributions in working with Marc and the rest of the VSA team as we move into recovery.”

Q&A With Visit San Antonio President & CEO Marc Anderson on City’s Meetings Potential

Convention center view in San Antonio

View of convention center in San Antonio. Image courtesy of Visit San Antonio

There’s a lot of new happenings in San Antonio’s hospitality industry. Fresh hotels are on the horizon, including new-build Artista San Antonio Hotel on the River Walk (2023), a luxury InterContinental Hotel on the River Walk receiving a $50 million refresh (2023), Estancia del Norte opening in the Uptown District this past April after a renovation and rebrand, plus much, much more.

Visit San Antonio made a big change this year too, welcoming its new president and CEO, Marc Anderson, this summer, who joins the organization following six years as COO at Choose Chicago. We spoke with Anderson about the state of meetings in the city, what excites him most about San Antonio’s potential and more.

What’s the outlook for meetings and events in San Antonio?

Marc Anderson

San Antonio has successfully returned to safe, in-person meetings since the fall of 2020. To date, we have been fortunate to successfully and safely host a number of sizable groups, including the NCAA 2021 Division I Women’s Basketball Championship, the Texas High School Coaches Association and the Women of Joy conference, among others.

Historically, after times of disaster or stress, the travel industry has been a major factor in helping the American economy rebound. That is significant in San Antonio, where the tourism sector is a leading industry in comparison to many destinations. This year is the beginning of a strong recovery for our industry, and we look optimistically toward 2022 to further drive a safe and fast rebound.

Staying connected with customers, conducting virtual site visits and continuing to tell the San Antonio story over the past 18 months has kept us well-positioned for recovery. With a number of major groups on the books and leads steadily increasing, we look forward to welcoming many more groups to our beautiful city.

As you have stepped into your new role, what excites you the most about San Antonio’s potential for meetings and events?

There are very few U.S. cities that offer the level of authenticity and storytelling that a city like San Antonio can offer. This is one of the reasons I moved my family to San Antonio. San Antonio is extremely pro-business and pro-tourism. Our community believes in the power of our industry and how we add great value to San Antonio and our residents. San Antonio is a vibrant community that is poised for not only an incredible recovery, but extensive growth in the coming years. As the seventh-largest city in the U.S., San Antonio is experiencing a renaissance unlike many cities in our country.

In addition, San Antonio’s walkability is unlike most U.S. cities. Our convention center is literally within walking distance to everything in our city. As groups look at budgets to recover from COVID-19, a large line item such as attendee transportation can be eliminated by choosing San Antonio for their convention.

Any recent examples of meetings and events moving forward safely in San Antonio recently?

In early 2021, San Antonio proved that the destination is ready for events with the success of hosting the NCAA 2021 Division I Women’s Basketball Championship from March 21 to April 4. Accommodating 64 participating teams within a bubble environment required meticulous planning and coordination on the part of not only the NCAA, Visit San Antonio and San Antonio Sports, but several local venues, hotels, restaurants, and other San Antonio partners, and thousands of volunteers.

From there, San Antonio’s hotels, venues, restaurants and attractions have remained committed to health and safety as our No. 1 priority. This summer, San Antonio hosted the Texas High School Coaches Association with over 14,000 attendees, breaking previous attendance numbers.

Our biggest takeaway is that meeting safely is very possible. We must all stay diligent in this recovery effort and not let our guard down when it comes to meeting safely.

Plus: The Latest Meeting Venue and Development News in San Antonio

Anderson emphasized that the amount of development happening in San Antonio that will contribute to its continued standing as a desirable meetings and events destination. Major highlights meeting planners should know about include the following.

  • Artista San Antonio  is coming to River Walk in summer 2023, adding 112 guest rooms to the area with an art-centric modern design with a nod to the Spanish colonial roots of San Antonio. The hotel, operating under Accor’s Morgans Originals lifestyle brand, will engage directly with the local artist community, providing several unique offerings for guests including access to limited edition prints, custom artwork and bespoke textile and leather goods. Over 2,500 square feet of event and meeting space will be available along with signature bar and restaurant experiences.
  • An InterContinental hotel is coming to River Walk in early 2023. Scarlett Hotel Group and Trailbreak Partners have purchased the former Wyndham San Antonio River Walk and have planned a $50 million overhaul that will transform the 21-story building into a luxury, full-service, four-star, 390-room InterContinental Hotel. As part of the multimillion-dollar upgrades, the new hotel will offer 40,000 square feet of meeting space and nearly 3,000 square feet of dining and restaurant space, as well as luxury rooftop amenities.
  • Dual-Concept AC Hotel & Element Hotel will debut at Riverview Towers in May 2022. Across from historic Main Plaza and San Fernado Cathedral, The Riverview Towers will soon be home to San Antonio’s first AC Hotel by Marriott and Element Hotel by Westin. The hotels’ 20-story building will include 4,000 square feet of function space and rooftop bar One Watson on the 13th floor overlooking the River Walk. AC Hotel will offer 181 rooms, while Element Hotel will offer 169 spacious guest rooms designed for longer stays including fully equipped in-room kitchens, fitness options and onsite laundry.

Additionally, Anderson said that the trendy neighborhood The Pearl is continuing to add dining concepts, which means more after-hours options for meeting attendees. "Two upcoming dining concepts will be centered around outdoor living. Allora is a stylish, full-service coastal Italian restaurant designed to take diners on a journey through the romantic Amalfi Coast. Arrosta is a fast-casual cafe, or tavola, bringing the flavors of Italian street markets to Pearl in San Antonio." Both plan to open in late 2021.

The Pearl neighborhood in San Antonio

"Another major development is the three-phase renovation of Hemisfair, which is dramatically enhancing the downtown area and is fantastic for meetings and events, especially given it is adjacent location to the Convention Center," he added, speaking of the redevelopment of the historic district. "We are eagerly awaiting two new dining options in Hemisfair: The Bombay Bicycle Club’s second location will open in Hemisfair in late 2021, and Jerk Shack’s third location will open in Hemisfair in the summer of 2022."

Tech entrepreneur beto altamirano announces san antonio mayoral run, irys co-founder, ceo is first candidate outside city hall in mayoral 2025 race.

Garrett Brnger , Reporter

Ken Huizar , Photojournalist

SAN ANTONIO – Irys co-founder and CEO Beto Altamirano announced his campaign for San Antonio mayor in 2025, becoming the first City Hall outsider to enter the race.

“I know San Antonio is hungry for a new vision forward,” Altamirano told KSAT in his first on-camera interview as a candidate.

Originally from Mission, Texas, Altamirano said San Antonio has given him lots of opportunity and he wants to give back.

“I want people to aspire to dream big, but in the process, we gotta take care of the basics: infrastructure, public safety, economic development. But it’s about taking care of the basics with an eye towards the future. And that’s the vision for the campaign.”

Altamirano also released a short video announcement Friday and is planning a campaign kickoff event Saturday morning at the Friendly Spot Ice House.

Altamirano co-founded Irys, formerly known as Cityflag, which developed the 311SA app for the City of San Antonio. It also recently acquired cybersecurity company Diversified Technical Services, Inc. (DTSI).

One of its biggest clients is the 16th Air Force (Air Forces Cyber) out of Joint Base San Antonio.

Altamirano said his company “no longer does city contracts,” and he plans to step down as CEO if elected. However, he’d still retain an ownership stake and a spot on the board.

He also co-founded the nonprofit Better Futures Institute and has experience as a staffer in the Texas House of Representatives and US Senate.

In a 26-minute interview with KSAT, Altamirano discussed his thoughts on issues including poverty, the future of the Ready To Work program, and the possibility of a downtown arena for the Spurs. You can see the whole interview below:

With Mayor Ron Nirenberg’s fourth, two-year term ending in 2025, the mayor’s seat will be wide open for the first time since Phil Hardberger left in 2009, when there was a two-term limit.

Altamirano is the third candidate to throw his hat in the ring. Councilman Manny Pelaez (D8) and Councilman John Courage (D9) are the only other candidates to have publicly announced they are running.

Councilwoman Melissa Cabello Havrda (D6) has also told KSAT she plans to run, and Councilwoman Adriana Rocha Garcia (D4) is considering a bid. However, neither has officially launched a campaign.

On Thursday, former Texas Secretary of State Rolando Pablos appeared to soft-launch a campaign with the creation of a new “nonpartisan public policy research collective” focused on the 2025 mayor’s race.

Though the election is still 11 months and a presidential race away, political consultant Christian Archer said it makes sense for Altamirano to wade in now, as media coverage will prompt voters to want to learn more.

“They know Jon Courage. They know Manny Pelaez and Havrda, and, you know, all of the people that are thinking of running,” Archer said. “And people are still shopping, saying, ‘Well, who is this guy?’ And there’s a buzz being created about him now. I think it’s going to benefit him.”

University Health’s incoming CEO Ed Banos in the University Health Women and Children’s Hospital at the Medical Center.

As its current CEO George Hernández steps down, University Health on Tuesday named its new President and CEO, Edward Banos, who will assume the position on July 1, according to a press release from University Health.

Banos, University Health’s current COO and executive VP, was chosen after a five-month national recruitment process, which began when Hernández announced his retirement last year. Banos had been a key part of Hernández’s leadership team, according to the board of trustees for the Bexar County local health system, which has two hospitals and more than 30 clinic and outpatient locations.

Before joining University Health in 2015 , Banos was CEO of Duke Lifepoint Upper Peninsula Health System in Michigan. He also served as COO, then later as CEO of Superior Health Partners in Marquette, Michigan.

He was also COO of Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, and has held roles at Tenet Health Corporation in hospitals across Florida, Pennsylvania, Georgia, and Texas, garnering more than 30 years of executive health care leadership experience before assuming his new role as CEO of University Health in San Antonio.

Banos is tasked with leading University Health’s planned expansion, adding two new community hospitals and two multi-specialty clinics in the coming years.

“Ed has a deep understanding of our organization, a passion for our mission and the vision to take University Health to even greater heights,” Hernández said in a prepared statement. “I am leaving our mission and our future in excellent hands.”

Banos will oversee the openings of new hospitals on the South and Northeast Sides, including the new Palo Alto Hospital and Retama Hospital, expected to open in 2027. The new clinics will also open on the South Side and East Side by early 2026, according to University Health.

Banos is a member of the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce and has served on the board of the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the South Texas Crisis Collaborative.

He holds a Bachelor of Science in Health Records Administration from the University of Pittsburgh, and earned his master’s degree in Health Service Administration from Armstrong Atlantic State University, now known as Georgia Southern University.

In a statement, Banos said he is grateful for the board’s confidence and for the opportunity to serve patients in San Antonio.

“University Health is a special organization and it will be my great honor to lead this dedicated, compassionate and highly skilled team,” he said. “I am fortunate to have had the opportunity to be mentored by George over the past nine years, and deeply committed to the unique mission and deeply-rooted values of University Health.”

Bexar County Hospital District Board of Managers Chair James Adams said that Banos has been a “key member of George’s leadership team,” so placing him as CEO will help make sure set projects remain on schedule.
