Israel is blessed with some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, with its borders situated along 170 miles of the glittering Mediterranean , the unique Dead Sea , and the tip of the Red Sea at the Gulf of Aqaba. From serene white sand coastline to vibrant and active city beaches to shores dotted with impressive archaeological ruins, Israel has so many beaches worth spending the day at. Facilities vary from beach to beach, but they all offer stunning seaside views. Here are the top 10 beaches in Israel.

Palmachim Beach, Palmachim

An attractive beach south of Tel Aviv, Palmachim was declared a national park in 2003 and is one of the last remaining stretches of coastline in Israel still in its natural state. As it's a bit removed from the city, it’s cleaner and calmer than Tel Aviv beaches for sure, but facilities are also fewer—although there is a lifeguard, some shade tents, and restrooms. Low cliffs on the southern end and views of Tel Aviv on the northern side are equally stunning, and the crystal clear water, soft white sand, and hundreds of seashells that wash up make for a beautiful seashore.

Tel Aviv has 6 miles of Mediterranean coastline and 13 separate beaches, mostly connected by a boardwalk. There aren’t huge differences between them; though often crowded and loud, they are lots of fun, and all offer soft sand, warm blue water, and views of Tel Aviv or Jaffa’s old town.

Hilton Beach, which gets its name from the adjacent hotel on the northern end of the boardwalk, is a favorite due to its three distinct sections: the surfing area, the gay beach (marked by rainbow flags), and the dog beach. There’s also a breakwater that beachgoers can walk out on for exceptional views of the turquoise sea. Visit TopSea for kayaking, paddleboarding, and surfing lessons as well as equipment rental. Hilton Beach is also lined with cafés and restaurants.

Achziv Beach, Kiryat Gershon Tez

A hidden gem beloved by locals, Achziv Beach is about 3 miles north of Nahariyya and 4 miles away from Rosh Hanikra and the Lebanese border. Quieter than the city beaches, Achziv is adjacent to Achziv National Park, where ruins from the Crusader and Ottoman periods can be seen from the shore. With coves, cliffs, and lagoons hidden among the rocky outcrops, the Mediterranean water is as clear as ever here. Sea turtles happen to like this spot, and you can catch them laying their eggs here between May and September. The rock pools are also home to anemone, urchins, starfish, and sometimes even octopi. During the summer, there are lifeguards, restrooms, and other facilities. Note: Entrance costs 33 new shekels for adults and 20 new shekels for children.

Caesarea Aqueduct Beach, Caesarea

Caesarea was an ancient Herodian port city on the Mediterranean coast, about halfway between Tel Aviv and Haifa. Archaeologists have uncovered magnificent ruins there, and its beach features one of their most incredible finds: an ancient Roman aqueduct. The massive stone structure with magnificent arches makes for an incredible backdrop to a day on the shore. Sunset here is absolutely breathtaking. Note that there are no lifeguards or other services here.

Dor Habonim Beach, Habonim

Known as one of Israel’s most picturesque beaches, these are actually two connected beaches 16 miles south of Haifa on the Mediterranean. The sea’s azure water is on full display here, and the rugged coastline is dotted with natural rock jetties. Most of the beach is part of a nature reserve , with several walking paths along a rocky part of the shore featuring more inlets than anywhere else in Israel. The Blue Cave and Shell Bay are worth checking out, in addition to a nearby shipwreck. There are no facilities here.

Dado Beach, Haifa

The northern end of the Mediterranean coastline in Israel is just as beautiful as the rest, and Haifa has several beaches worth checking out. Central to the city, Dado Beach is often the site of plenty of partying. There are several tasty restaurants lining the shores, and public dance nights always draw a crowd. It also has a lovely promenade and an amphitheater.

Mosh's Beach, Eilat

It's all about the super chill vibe here at Mosh's Beach. Eilat has several beaches on its coastline, thanks to its location at the tip of the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aqaba. But locals flock to Mosh's to relax on the comfy cushions and indulge in the delicious food and alcoholic drinks that the beachside restaurants deliver right to your spot. The sand here can be a bit pebbly, but the water is clear and cool.

Kalia Beach, Dead Sea

A trip to the Dead Sea is not your typical beach experience, but it is a must when you’re in Israel. While Ein Bokek is where most of the big hotels and resorts are located, the beach there is extremely crowded. For a calmer scene, head north to Kalia. Slather yourself with the mineral-rich mud and float in the salt-laden waters before catching panoramic views of the turquoise waters and surrounding mountains from a terrace above the beach. There’s also a camping area, tented restaurant serving Bedouin-style meals, food stands, a spa, and the Lowest Bar in the World—right on the beach. Note: Entrance costs 60 new shekels.

Eilat Coral Beach Nature Reserve, Eilat

This marine reserve protects incredible coral reefs—the only ones you'll find in Israel—as well as colorful tropical fish. Of course, snorkeling and diving are popular pastimes here, and snorkeling gear can be rented on site. For non-divers, bridges stretch over the shallow reefs, allowing you to see them from above thanks to the ultra-clear water. There’s also a strip of sand to relax on.

Herzliya Beach, Herzilya

About 9 miles north of Tel Aviv is the city of Herzliya, known as an enclave for the wealthy. Consequently, the beach there is lined with impressive oceanfront mansions. The beach is public, though, and its white sand, sparkling water, and sweeping views are ideal for a serene beach day.

Israeli Beach – There are actually 137 beaches in total; Some of the most beautiful I have ever seen. Yes, I have been to the Caribbean and Mexico, as well as all coastlines in the States and some of the Beaches in Israel top them all.

What I think makes the Israel Beach so unique are the crystal clear blue and turquoise waters combined with the natural undisturbed coastlines. Not just that, but what is truly unique about Israel is that you have four distinctly different bodies of water; The Mediterranean, Red Sea by  Eilat ,  Dead Sea , and  Kinneret . This makes for an diverse mixture of beaches and coastlines. See  more beach pictures .

Being a self described beach lover myself, I have visited many Beaches in Israel and here are my top Israeli Beach recommendations:

Israeli Beach – Mediterranean Sea Along the Coastline

Gordon Beach ( Tel Aviv ) : One of the most popular beaches near the luxurious Tel Aviv Hotels. Nice and clean with lots of nearby places to dine or drink. It is free and has nice clean shower and bathroom facilities. Located on the Boardwalk (Tayelet in Hebrew). You will see a nice mix of tourists and natives (mostly younger crowd). I would recommend this stretch of beach especially during the week as Friday and Saturday can be very crowded especially during the summer vacation season.

Aqueduct Beach . (just north of Caesarea) : My personal favorite. It is located minutes from Binyamina and Zichron Yakhov. The beach adopted its name from the ancient Roman aqueduct 1000s of years old that still runs directly through it. Be prepared as there are no bathrooms, but they do have open showers to rinse off. In the peak summer season, you can find one lone vendor selling ice cream and snacks out of a trailer.The coastline is rough with many large rocks and the swimming can be dangerous at times. There are lifeguards on duty that will not allow you to stray to far out. During most times, the water is clear and calm combined with the backdrop of the ancient Aquaduct ruins; it is a mesmerizing combination.

Dor Nasholim beach , where there is a cove offering beautiful white sandy beaches and crystal clear blue waters at the base of the ancient Phoenician city of Dor.

Habonim Beach One of the best kept secrets in Israel. You will pay about 35 Shekels (9 U.S.D), per car, but it is more than worth it. The beach itself is part of a nature reserve. Again, this is a rocky beach like most in Israel, but you will find a nice protected lagoon perfect for swimming with younger children. There are clean showers, dressing rooms, and bathrooms, as well as a snack bar located on the site. Also a very nice picnicking area with tables. One of the main attractions is that you can hike along the rocky coast of the nature reserve where the course sand ridges and water have created inlets and caves. I have done it many times and always consider it a fresh adventure.

Carmel and South Beach ( Haifa : As you travel North towards Haifa on Road 2 (Cvish HaHof as it is commonly described), you can’t help but notice a beautiful blue strip of turquoise water on your left. This is actually an undisturbed public beach that leads all the way to Carmel Beach on the southern end of Haifa. Carmel Beach has a Tayelet (boardwalk) with numerous cafes, restaurants, and juice stands as well as bathroom and shower facilities. The southern beach offers none of these amenities, but in exchange gives you clean undisturbed pristine beach. Entrance is free.

Israeli Beach – Sea of Galilee (Kinneret)

Ein Gev Resort Village Beach : on the southeastern end of the Sea of Galilee is a great place for everyone. This resort offers attractions for kids and adults alike such as water sports, slides, pools etc. Facilities include, lifeguard services, showers & restrooms, restaurant, shaded camping area with barbeque stands. It is considered to be the prettiest one on the lake, with a date palm grove and thick lawns stretching down to the water. Come for the beach – Stay for the sunset. It is truly magical.

Israeli Beach – Dead Sea

Ein Gedi Beach : A spa and resort located on the shores of the Dead Sea (the lowest point on Earth. It is well known the amazing healing properties of this region. The beach is connected to the spa by a man made narrow roadway that you can hike (about ½ mile long) or take a free tram ride. The beach area is very clean with lounging chairs and bamboo covered shady areas. After a dip – a float I should say in the mineral rich waters, you will need to rinse off. There are showers located on the beach.

Word of Caution :  Stay in only marked areas as there are sinkholes present throughout this area. Also, I highly recommend sandals or water shoes as the shores of the Sea are quite rough with sharp rocks and difficult to enter in bare feet.

Israeli Beach – Red Sea (Eilat)

Coral Beach Nature Reserve (Eilat) : In one word it is breathtaking. The clearest most beautiful water and underwater coral reef nature reserve I have ever seen. You can swim, snorkel, or scuba dive and see the most brilliant colorful fish and coral formations. There are showers and changing areas, but not much in the way of restaurants and cafes. You will need to go towards the boardwalk and hotels. Not the best area for ordinary swimming (I recommend the hotel beach areas). Please be aware of burning coral and spiny sea urchins.

Dolphin Reef Beach (Eilat) : The Dolphin Reef Eilat is an ecological site where you have the unique opportunity to actually observe dolphins up close in their own natural habitat and actually swim with a group of bottle-nosed dolphins,some born at the site, carry on their daily lives of hunting, mating, and playing. Israel is perhaps best known—and deservedly so—for its holy sites, but its standing as a stellar beach destination often goes unsung. With coastline bordering the Mediterranean, the Dead Sea, the Red Sea, and the Sea of Galilee, and everything from world-class scuba diving to ancient ruins to explore, the beaches of the Land of Milk and Honey have something for every type of sand lover. Here are the must-visit spots for a day (or a few) in the sun:

Tel Aviv The White City’s perpetual sunshine draws people to its 13 beaches, which rest on a nine-mile stretch of Mediterranean seashore. A casual, walking city with sycamore-lined streets and clusters of Bauhaus architecture, beach life in Tel Aviv is part of the culture. “Life happens outside in Tel Aviv, in the cafés and on the streets,” said Ofra Ganor, owner of seaside restaurant Manta Ray at Alma Beach. “The connection to the sea is part of our daily life.”

Beachgoers traipse from sand to street, popping into restaurants with indelible views of the Mediterranean, such as Manta Ray, known for its mezze and fashionable crowd; chef Meir Adoni’s internationally renowned Israeli-Moroccan restaurant, Lumina , overlooking the Tel Aviv Marina; Cassis , a Mediterranean restaurant in the millennia-old port city of Jaffa; and Fortuna Del Mar for rustic fare in a more removed setting in the northern part of Tel Aviv.

Hilton Beach is the LGBT community’s second home and where Israel’s Pride parade starts and ends. A special light system at the beach also allows for surfers to ride waves late into the evening. The neighboring Nordau Beach is frequented by Tel Aviv’s more religious residents and segregated by gender during the week. Windsurfers and kitesurfers hang out at Aviv Beach for the perfect wind conditions. A promenade runs along Tel Aviv’s coastline where people jog, bike, and work out at outdoor gyms in the sand; there are several public beach libraries along the coast; and free Wi-Fi is available just about everywhere. “The beach belongs to everybody,” Ganor explained. “We have a big mix of people in Tel Aviv: Jews, Arabs, surfers, yogis. It’s about peace here.”

Tel Aviv’s larger hotels, such as the Carlton with its rooftop bar; the David Intercontinental ; and the Shalom , preside over the sea. Smaller boutique hotels, like the Montefiore , the Norman , and the Rothschild , are tucked into the bustling city and are about a 10-minute stroll to the beach.

Old City Acre Old City Acre, pronounced “akko,” is a charmingly small, walled 18th-century former fortress and one of the oldest cities in the world (the area has been continuously inhabited for thousands of years, and there are also remains from a Crusader town). It’s 2 hours north of Tel Aviv, and travelers can rent or hire a car to make the drive up the Mediterranean or take the train for about $5 each way.

Beachgoers sunbathe beside ancient ruins and purple wildflowers, but be sure to bring your essentials, as there are no shops on the beach. Tourist boats at Acre Harbor grant visitors panoramic views of Old City Acre from the sea. For lunch, swing by Uri Buri , a famed restaurant nestled in a 400-year-old stone house with spectacular views of waves crashing into the fortress walls. Just steps from the beach, the Efendi Hotel is a masterfully restored structure made of two ancient palaces and is itself worth the trip to Acre.

Caesarea Herod the Great built this port town in 25 B.C. and many ancient remains can still be seen. Aqueduct Beach, also known as Arches Beach, is the site of an impressive Roman-era aqueduct and provides sunbathers an opportunity to swim and lounge beside the ruins. Just south of Aqueduct Beach is the Old Port of Caesarea, where a small hub of art galleries, shops, and restaurants line the harbor.

Housed in a structure more than 2,000 years old is Helena , where esteemed chef Amos Sion uses local ingredients to create inspired Mediterranean dishes. “The calamari swam right there, just a few hours ago,” Sion said, pointing to the sea outside panoramic windows and referring to the star of his calamari a la plancha dish, served on za’atar leaves with chickpeas and labaneh cheese.

Behind Helena is Old Caesarea Diving Center , where divers can experience the port ruins from underwater. Also in the Old Port of Caesarea is the Roman Theatre of Caesarea , an ancient amphitheater right on the Mediterranean that is still used today to host live concerts for big-name artists such as Björk and the Pixies.

There aren’t any beachside hotels in Caesarea, so many travelers simply make this a day trip from Tel Aviv—a 45-minute car ride south.

Ein Bokek The best way to enjoy the Dead Sea is to spend the day (or a night or two) in Ein Bokek, the sea’s four-mile Israeli shoreline (it also borders Palestine and Jordan). For thousands of years, people have traversed the mountainous desert to reach the Dead Sea to float in its salty water (it is almost 10 times as salty as the ocean) and rub some of the mineral-rich mud on their skin. For those wanting to spend the night, book a room with views overlooking the Dead Sea and Jordan’s immense mountains in the distance. Hod Hamidbar , Daniel Dead Sea Hotel , and Isrotel Dead Sea Hotel and Spa are all good options.

Eilat Only from Eilat, Israel’s southernmost point, can beachgoers see Jordan to the east and Egypt to the west: a striking view. The northern area of Eilat hosts seaside resorts, including the Royal Beach hotel , a boardwalk with shops and nightclubs, and Eilat’s hottest restaurant at the moment, Leviathan, Hebrew for “whale,” which overlooks the Eilat Lagoon at Herods seaside hotel.

In-the-know adventurers head to Eilat’s southern side, an oasis for kiteboarders, snorkelers, and scuba divers who want to experience one of the world’s northernmost coral reefs. At Coral Beach, amateurs and pros alike rent gear and take lessons at Surf Center Eilat , before swimming out to explore the coral reef. Aqua-Sport Red Sea Diving Center offers boat rides for scuba divers and snorkelers to more obscure locations on the Red Sea.

Mosh Beach (pronounced “moosh”), the relaxed locals’ spot, has a small but lively scene. Enjoy a nourishing vegetarian Mediterranean lunch on the sand at Mosh, which also has a bar where tanned local bartenders serve up fresh cocktails and fruit smoothies. At Eilat’s Dolphin Reef , an ecological attraction and dolphin oasis, guests pay a day rate to sun on the private beach; wander the tree houses; and swim with dolphins, which come and go as they please. Three relaxation pools of salt water, freshwater, and water akin to the Dead Sea are surrounded by lush botanical gardens.

Best Time To Visit Israel Beaches:

Israel’s Mediterranean coast enjoys a Mediterranean climate, making it ideal for beachgoers from spring through early autumn. The best time to visit is typically from April to October, with the weather being warm and the sea invitingly refreshing. It’s important to note that during the peak summer months of July and August, the beaches can get quite crowded. So if you prefer a more tranquil experience, consider visiting in the shoulder seasons.

January – Netanya Beach:

January is a great time to visit Netanya Beach, as the winter rains have made the landscape lush and vibrant. The moderate winter temperatures are ideal for exploring the city and its golden sands. Stroll along the picturesque promenade, indulge in delicious local cuisine, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.

February – Herzliya Beach:

The question of which are the best beaches in Israel is a question of great controversy, with over 100km of sandy Mediterranean coastline, plus beaches at the Dead Sea, Sea of Galilee, and on the Red Sea, in Eilat. Israel’s beaches contrast hugely; from the urban beaches of Tel Aviv, busy with young Tel Avivi’s taking a break from city life, to the rural and quiet beaches of the Northern Coast in the Western Galilee. Some beaches are popular with surfers, others with dog owners, and some are still secrets. Every Israeli has their favorite beach, here are some of our favorites.

Tel Aviv Beach

Of course, the  Tel Aviv beach , which stretches over 10km along the Mediterranean is a firm favorite. Divided into over ten individual beaches, each of Tel Aviv’s beaches has its own character and crowd, from the Tzur Beach in the far north of the city which is a favorite with locals and relatively quiet by urban standards, to the central stretch of beaches – Gordon, Frishman, Bograshov, and Dolphinarium Beaches which are always busy, or the beaches further south which attract hipsters and locals from Jaffa. Caesarea Beach

The  Caesarea Aqueduct Beach  is a truly unique beach, about 50km north of Tel Aviv, just north of the Herodian port of  Caesarea . The ruins of an ancient Roman Aqueduct mark the inland edge of the beach and the clean sands don’t attract hoards of visitors. This beach gets busy at the weekend with locals and the breathtaking aqueduct is a stop off for many tour buses, however with no restaurants and promenade, it is something in between the almost forgotten beaches of the Northern Coast, and the busier beaches of the city. Because of the aqueduct, it’s a particularly great photo spot at sunset.

Jizr a-Zarqa Beach

Far from the beaten track,  Jizr a-Zarqa  is an authentic Arab fisherman village on the coast just north of Caesarea. Other than a scattering of villagers, the beach here is almost deserted, and almost totally untouched, with wide plains of clean sand. A fish restaurant is open on odd days. Access the beach from the village of Jizr a-Zarqa, continuing about 500 meters along the dirt track to the sea. There’s also a stream estuary, a particularly beautiful spot.

Beit Yannai Beach

Just South of Caesarea is  Beit Yannai Beach,  a rural setting, with the beach located within a nature reserve meaning it is brilliantly maintained (entrance fee is payable for parking). Especially popular with watersport enthusiasts (kitesurfing in particular), the Beit Yannai beach is also the estuary of the Alexander River which runs across Israel from its spring in the West Bank.

Herzliya Beach

Herzliya  is an upscale neighborhood just north of Tel Aviv.  Herzliya Beach  is considered one of Israel’s best beaches, notably quieter than those in Tel Aviv but still getting very busy at summer weekends, yet still developed with lots of lifeguards, restaurants, beach bars, and even a mall at the  Herzliya Marina  end. The beach is lined with four or five large hotels and is popular with tourists, the locals of  Herzliya  and the many surrounding cities, and of course, surfers.

Coral Reef Beach, Eilat

Coral Beach  in  Eilat  is the best place to snorkel in Israel, yet is also a popular family beach for tourists visiting the sun-soaked city, and locals alike. The beautiful coral off the shore here can be easily taken advantage of with places to rent equipment for snorkeling, and, for those less adventurous, places to eat, sit, and relax and enjoy the sun.

Dolphin Beach, Eilat

Eilat’s Dolphin Beach  is located within the  Dolphin Reef  in  Eilat , famed for offering the opportunity to swim alongside dolphins. Pay an entry fee to enter the reef and you get access to a beach which is much quieter than most in the city. The beach has, of course, food and drink facilities and relaxation can be taken to the next level with the attractions music-infused relaxation pools.

Mineral Beach, Dead Sea

The Mineral Beach at the Dead Sea has a pool of ‘Dead Sea Mud’ you can soak yourself in, a natural Jacuzzi made from natural sulfur pools, and a freshwater pool. Totally unique, it owes its place as one of the best beaches in Israel by being a well-organized beach. The Mineral Beach also has health treatments, a cafe, showers, and is located in the northern part of the  Dead Sea . Of the handful of  beaches at the Dead Sea , many consider Mineral Beach to be the best, and tours  like this one  to the Dead Sea visit this beach  – The Mineral Beach is momentarily closed due to sink holes in the area.

A melting pot of cultures can be seen as Jews, Christians and Muslims live in close proximity to each other and interact on a daily basis. Be prepared for modern nightlife in Tel Aviv, diverse landscapes and beautiful beaches as Israel borders the Mediterranean, the Red Sea, and the Dead Sea .

Best Beaches in Israel

Despite its small size, Israel has over 100 kilometers of sandy beaches. That makes it difficult to pick a favorite. But that does not mean that we cannot come up with a list of the best beaches in Israel. Whether you want the urban vibe of Tel Aviv or a quieter beach in the north, there is a perfect spot for everyone.

Banana Beach

Banana Beach is right by Tel Aviv’s city centre and joins the sand to the south of Jerusalem Beach. The endless Mediterranean horizon flows in front with Tel-Aviv’s hotel skyline stretching to the north.

This is one of the beaches of Israel that’s great for a relaxed experience as it’s perfect for reading a book, sunning, and generally hanging out. Banana beach attracts a mixed crowd, both locals and tourists, with young families and groups of friends coming for a chilled afternoon.

The beach is actually named after the cool 24/7 beach bar that provides good food, drinks, and shaded chairs. There’s also beach volleyball and a surf school which offers some fun activities or people watching depending on your energy levels.

The weekends can get busy but all in all, this is a peaceful beach option, a simple and sweet choice to eat, drink, play and take it easy.

Coral Beach

Coral beach is located in the most southern city of Israel, Eilat, and the most northern tip of the Gulf of Aqaba. The area itself is interesting as the meeting place for four countries; Israel, Egypt , Jordan , and Saudia Arabia. It is one of the best red sea beaches for good reason!

This is hands down one of the best beaches in Israel if you can make the journey south. The desert panorama alone is remarkable with its crystalline blue waters and white beach, backed by purple-laced mountains.

The section of the Red Sea’s coral reef system below is what makes this spot a real treasure, reaching out 1,200 meters along the shore. Coral Beach is home to Israel’s only coral reef, that’s also the most northerly reef in the world.

Unsurprisingly, this beach is part of a nature reserve and an absolute treat for diving and snorkeling enthusiasts. Drift over the reef and observe a fascinating underwater landscape with deep canyons, shapes, and underwater plants. Many colorful fish and other sea creatures also live in the corals.

The beach area has been well set-up to spend the day underwater exploring and has changing rooms, showers, and a snack bar. In case you haven’t packed your own, snorkels, masks and fins are available to rent.

More on Eliat:

Eliat is a busy port and resort area at the southernmost tip of Israel. The offerings for visitors is vast, with water sports, snorkeling tours, and resort vibes. It has a desert climate and can often exceed 40C in the summer months.

Caesarea Aqueduct Beach

This is arguably the most unique and historical of all the beaches in Israel, set 50km north of Tel Aviv just passing the Herodian port town of Caesarea.

As you may have suspected, an aqueduct is the feature that makes Aqueduct Beach one of a kind. The ruins of this striking, ancient Roman structure emerge from the sands on the edge of the beach, gazing out to blue Med.

The arches have a mystery about them, as ruins do, bringing in movement from tours, stopping off to explore and take photos. It is busier with locals at the weekend too but despite this, Aqueduct Beach remains a calm and relaxing place to be.

A welcome surprise is that the beach is relatively quiet for a historical beach site and hasn’t been particularly built up, save some simple wooden shade structures and a lifeguard stand. This adds to the natural beauty of the panorama, with the crumbling aqueduct framing the still beach and waves.

Apart from their aesthetic contribution to the beach, the arches also provide some shade for you to duck into – ideally come prepared with some chairs and a cooler. There’s just something special about looking out to a blue horizon, tucked under the arch of a 1000-year-old aqueduct.

Hilton Beach

Hilton Beach is just below the hotel of the same name, nearby Tel Aviv’s Marina, and right in the center of the city. If an exciting, fun and social atmosphere is at the heart of your beach visits, you’ll love it here.

The beach has a cove-like layout with a T-shaped jetty, jutting out for strolling and taking a different view of the surfers and kayakers. There’s also volleyball that’s fun to watch from sun loungers or get into with friends old and new.

Hilton Beach draws a younger crowd and is popular with the LGBTQ+ community. There is also the great inclusion of wheelchair-friendly changing rooms and an access road to the sea.

Thanks to its location near lots of bars and restaurants, this a perfect choice if you’ll be continuing the party after an afternoon on the beach.

Gordon Beach

Gordon Beach is part of the Israel beaches that make up the extensive Tel Aviv coastline.   Just south of Hilton Beach and the Marina, this is the central-city’s main beach and so popular for good reason.

Both Tel Avivians and tourists come down to Gordon in the day to enjoy all it has to offer; sunning, swimming, workout equipment, a playground and the boardwalk hosting restaurants that dish out big servings of Israeli breakfast and fresh fish.

You also have the saltwater Gordon Swimming Pool nearby, well-stocked with sun loungers and umbrellas for an alternative salty dip by the sea.

In the evening, the beach bars start getting revved up. DJ’s, drinks and a gorgeous backdrop invite revelers to dance into the night.

Gordon Beach is a safe bet for all types of beach-bums due to its ample facilities and prime location in Tel Aviv. The crowds add to the atmosphere of this spot making it a fun hang-out with lots going on, and people-watching galore.

Alma beach is the southernmost piece of the Tel Aviv shoreline, on the border with the ancient port city of Jaffa.

This is mainly a local’s beach with none of the tourist fixings and while it does get quite busy, there’s a distinctively relaxed vibe.

It may not be the most obvious choice for a beach outing – the waves feel much stronger and there’s no lifeguard – but it’s a grower, especially if you’re looking for a bit of peace and quiet from the city.

It’s also a haven for dog walkers, and admirers, as furry friends are permitted without a leash. If your ears are pricking up, you may show up precisely for the cute puppies and dogs frolicking in the water.

The view south from the beach gives a tease of ancient Jaffa, catching your eye with the old clocktower perched on the waterfront. Combining a bit of down time on Alma Beach and exploring the old city makes a wonderful day out.

Looking to the north you can study the coastline and pick out the beach promenade and city-centre hotels. Alma is also known for its laid-back, magnificent sunsets over the Mediterranean Sea.

Palmachim Beach in Israel

Another of the best Israel beaches is located a little further down the coast in Palmachim, a kibbutz around 10 km south of Tel Aviv.

The majority of the beach here is part of a nature reserve, rugged and natural, with rolling sand dunes, a limestone ridge backing the sand and endangered sea turtles.

It’s one of the last untouched beaches and a lovely choice to escape the city and recharge. It’s worth noting that although Palmachim is somewhat of a secret gem, it does tend to get busy on Saturday’s. If you prefer your beaches on the quieter side it may be worth planning for a weekday if possible.

People come here for the natural beauty and stunning views, there are no restaurants or cafes so come prepared with a picnic and some drinks to take in the magic with refreshments.

If you’re looking for a combination of ancient ports and archaeological remains, together with exquisite sandy beaches and fresh seafood, opt for visiting one of the seaside towns along Israel’s 270-kilometre Mediterranean coastline. Akko is a picturesque ancient port city on the northwestern coast, which is rich in history for all religions and where Jews, Muslims and Christians have coexisted for thousands of years. Dozens walk out before Jerry Seinfeld’s commencement speech at Duke in protest

( The Hil l ) — Dozens of students walked out of the Duke University commencement ceremony ahead of Jerry Seinfeld’s scheduled speech Sunday, apparently in protest of the Jewish comedian’s support for Israel, according to news reports and videos circulated on social media.

As Seinfeld received his honorary degree, before beginning his commencement speech, the graduating students rose from their seats and walked out, waving Palestinian flags and chanting, “Free, free Palestine.” Some in the audience joined in support, but many audience members booed at the protesters and chanted “Jerry” repeatedly.

After the Oct. 7 attack in Israel, Seinfeld publicly voiced his support for Israel and has spoken out against antisemitism. He also traveled to Tel Aviv in December to meet with family members of people being held hostage by Hamas.

In the commencement speech , Seinfeld avoided confronting the protesters, instead delivering a lighthearted speech with jokes and life advice for the graduating students.

The Duke walkout is just the latest example of protests on college campuses in response to the ongoing war in Gaza.

Students on campuses throughout the country have expressed frustration with institutional support for Israel, with many calling for their schools to divest from groups that back Israel’s military campaign in Gaza.

Small pro-Palestinian protests popped up sporadically Saturday as colleges and universities from North Carolina to California held commencement ceremonies, including dozens of graduating students at Virginia Commonwealth University who walked out on an address by Gov. Glenn Youngkin .

At the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a small group of demonstrators staged what appeared to be a silent protest during commencement at Camp Randall Stadium. At the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, pro-Palestinian demonstrators splattered red paint on the steps of a building hours ahead of the school’s commencement ceremony and chanted on campus while students wearing light blue graduation gowns posed for photos, the  News & Observer reported . At the University of Texas, Austin, a student held up a Palestinian flag during a commencement ceremony and refused to leave the stage briefly before being escorted away by security.

And at the University of California, Berkeley, a small group of pro-Palestinian demonstrators began waving flags and chanting during commencement and were escorted to the back of the stadium, where they were joined by others,  according to the San Francisco Chronicle . There were no major counterprotests, but some attendees voiced frustration.

“I feel like they’re ruining it for those of us who paid for tickets and came to show our pride for our graduates,” said Annie Ramos, whose daughter is a student. “There’s a time and a place, and this is not it.”

Before the city’s expansion from the 1950s onwards, many of the neighbourhoods that are now considered inner districts were beach resorts where the Istanbul elites would spend summers in their second homes. Although you may not immediately think of spending a day at the beach when you visit, you should: there are plenty of spots where you can take a dip in the surprisingly clean waters, party among the beautiful people at fashionable beach clubs, or simply lie back and escape the stresses of the city.

If you’re an early riser, make like the hardy old men who dive in for a morning swim in all seasons before going about their day. Slightly further afield, there are plenty of wilder beaches on the Black Sea and Sea of Marmara which can be easily reached in a day trip. Expect to pay entrance fees for the best spots — but there are still some lesser-known stretches that you can visit for free.

1. Uzunya beach, Kilyos

This deep natural harbour on the Black Sea at the very tip of the Bosphorus Strait is the most Instgrammable of Istanbul ’s beaches. It has golden sands and a deep blue sea, and in the height of summer you can (almost) imagine you’re on the Med, although the bracing coldness of the water will bring you back to reality with a not-unpleasant jolt. If you’re lucky, you’ll spot dolphins playing in the bay.

The best-known beach club on Istanbul’s Black Sea coast, Solar Beach hosts live music events every weekend throughout the summer, attracting a young, party-loving crowd. Swimming is way down on the list of attractions here, although the sea here is calmer than at many other nearby spots. There are beach volleyball courts and surfing lessons on offer, but if serious swimming is your thing, there is also an outdoor pool.

3. Kumbaba beach, Sile

A long stretch of sandy beach in the popular Black Sea resort town of Sile, Kumbaba was popular as far back as the Byzantine era, when bathers came to ease their rheumatism in its reputedly healing waters. These days its main attraction is its campsite, where you can pitch your tent or park up your caravan just metres from the water, which is the cleanest you’ll find around Istanbul.

4. Florya Gunes Plaji, city centre

This is the biggest public beach in the centre of Istanbul and a stark reminder that this metropolis of 16 million was once considered a seaside city. It’s surprisingly clean given its proximity to the churn of the city and the sheer numbers who visit it — come early if you decide to visit, especially on a weekend. Its location on the European side makes it the perfect place to unwind for a few hours before you head back into the whirl of urban life.

5. Eskibag beach, Buyukada

The biggest of the Princes’ Islands is often overcrowded in summer, but you can find a more secluded vibe at Eskibag, tucked away on the undeveloped southern tip of the island. You’ll have to take one of the electric buggies to get here, but once you arrive there’s everything needed for a full day of swimming and sunbathing. With its forest backdrop, it’s easy to forget you’re so close to the city.

6. Tirmata Beach, Kilyos

This beach club on Istanbul’s Black Sea shore is huge: 2,500 sun loungers and a large terrace and grassy area to boot. The restaurant serves up traditional Turkish cuisine – think grilled fish and mezze – and has a regular programme of live music. No wonder it’s a popular wedding venue for fashionable Istanbulites (if you’re planning a proposal, the club can arrange that too). This is one of the few beach clubs in the area with facilities specifically for children and there is a surf school catering to all levels.

7. Summer beach, Silivri

The beaches in Silivri, a small town on the Sea of Marmara just outside Istanbul, are easily reachable on a day trip but far less visited than those on the city’s Black Sea side. As a result, most of the spaces here are free to enter but still have great facilities and there’s an old-world seaside vibe that’s hard to find anywhere else in Turkey. Summer beach, with its long stretch of golden sand, is one of the most popular spots.

8. Sut Koyu beach, Burgazada

There are no facilities on this small pebble beach on one of the less-visited Princes’ Islands, but that means that you’re more likely to swerve the crowds if you come in July and August. It’s unknown even to most Istanbulites, and to reach it you’ll need a map and some decent shoes — though once you do you’re guaranteed one of the most peaceful spots in the city. 9. Bizimkoy Fire Beach, Silivri

On the southwestern fringe of Istanbul, you’ll find a clutch of cute seaside towns that feel a million miles from the metropolis. The biggest and easiest to reach is Silivri, where there are a clutch of decent beaches: Bizimkoy has the youngest vibe, with a bar, regular live events, and a fun, friendly atmosphere that means you’ll almost certainly make new friends. The beach itself is a lovely stretch of golden sand on the generally calm Sea of Marmara; arrive early to get a spot right at the waterside.

10. Burc Beach, Kilyos

One of the best-kept and most beautiful beaches around Istanbul, this is the place to come for water sports, including windsurfing and kitesurfing. It’s a private beach owned by Bosphorus University so you’ll have to pay a small entrance fee but it’s well worth it for its excellent facilities, sunset parties and festival vibe in the evening, when revellers gather around campfires on the sand.

11. Elio beach, Sedef Adasi

Sedef Adasi is the most exclusive of the Princes’ Islands since it’s not included on the route of the main ferries from the city centre. Take a smaller boat from the Bostanci ferry terminal on the Asian side of the city, then head for Elio: a small beach club which hosts live DJs and has a restaurant serving delicious Turkish and international dishes.

12. Agva, Sile

Some of the wildest coastal scenery in Turkey can be found around the village of Agva, a couple of hours’ drive from central Istanbul. This is the point where two rivers flow into the Black Sea and there are lots of lovely wooden guesthouses and restaurants built along the banks. Expect to uncover hidden bays, ancient ruins and caves in the area too, though the sea is often a little too rough for swimming.

13. Armutlu beach, Yalova

If you’re up for travelling a bit further out of Istanbul, venture towards the Yalova province on the Sea of Marmara. This region has become popular with tourists and second-home buyers from the Gulf in recent years due to its temperate climate and healing hot springs. Armutlu is a large, modern resort reminiscent of those on the Med and there’s plenty here to keep both children and adults entertained.

14. Cilingoz beach, Catalca

This beach is a nature park on the sea, where you can hike through protected forests before hitting the sand and the waves. It’s a paradise for wildlife and birdspotters, with hawks, woodpeckers and owls living here, and for anglers who can fish in the Cilingoz creek. Istanbulites love it as a picnic spot and there’s a small campsite for those who want to get away from the city.

15. Akcakese beach, Sile

One of the most unspoilt beaches on the Black Sea, Akcakese is a couple of natural bays fringed with white sand, against a backdrop of grassy bluffs. Facilities are basic but its draw is that it feels truly wild, in stark contrast to the brash beach clubs on other parts of the coast. There are camping spots available and some basic B&Bs in the nearby village.

16. Caddebostan beach, city centre

Don’t expect scale or luxury from this beach on the Asian side’s fashionable Kadikoy district — there are some changing cabins, a tea stall and that is it. But you can take your recommendation from the local old men who come here for early morning swims in all seasons. The water is cleaner than you might think and it’s a bracing way to start your day. You also find large grassy parks right behind — perfect for a picnic.

Flight attendant reveals alphabet hack to prevent blood clots on planes

There’s nothing better than settling in for a long-haul flight knowing you’re going somewhere super exciting.

You’ve got your snacks, a few Netflix shows downloaded and, crucially, an eye mask, ready to settle in for the coming hours.

But when it comes to flying, safety is paramount : the pressure can increase the risk of developing a deep vein thrombosis (AKA, a blood clot in a vein), particularly on flights that are longer than four hours.

So, the next time you jet off, consider building the ‘alphabet’ hack into your routine to prevent clotting and keep your mind at ease. It’s easy to remember (and if you forget, you can sing along the alphabet song as you practise it).

‘To prevent blood clots during long flights, consider incorporating a few simple strategies,’ TikToker @ciciinthesky, who is a flight attendant and often shares travel tips and inspiration to her account, explains.

‘First, remember the alphabet exercise – trace each letter with your foot to promote circulation,’ CiCi outlines in one video.

‘Second, wear compression socks, which help maintain blood flow and reduce the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

‘Finally, make it a point to stand up and walk around every hour or so if possible. This helps activate your leg muscles, encouraging blood to flow more freely.

‘Combining these techniques not only enhances your comfort but also significantly lowers the risk of developing blood clots during extended periods of inactivity.’

This is why we always board flights to the left side of the plane

When boarding a plane, you’ll always enter on the left side of the aircraft, regardless of the carrier, whether you take stairs or a jet bridge, or whether you’re in economy, business or first class.

There’s an interesting reason behind it too. Commercial aeroplanes were initally build with their passenger doors on the left because of historical traditions, before it became a matter of efficiency.

Michael Oakley, managing editor of  The Aviation Historian ,  explained to Afar : ‘Much of aviation terminology had its origins in maritime lore (rudder, cockpit, cabin, bulkhead, knots, etc), and similarly, the aeronautical ways of doing things owe a lot to sailing.

‘Just as boats and ships have a port side – the side of the vessel conventionally adjacent to the dock when in port – aircraft are the same. Sensibly, people decided to continue to board on the port (or left) side.’

So, when it comes to compression socks, which ones should you go for?

You can pick them up for a relatively low price in Boots, at £13.68 , whether you buy ahead of your flight or leave it to the last minute at the in-airport shop. Gatwick, Luton, Stansted and Heathrow all have a Boots store, ready and waiting for those ‘oops, I forgot’ moments ahead of boarding.

If you want to plan ahead and save a little bit of money, though, you can buy them on Amazon for as little as £7.99.

There’s also the option of having fun, colourful socks, too: autism and sensory-friendly, there are an array of options available through Not Your Grandma’s, including a fun space print , dinosaurs or even unicorns , for £15 a pop.

Switzerland's Nemo wins 68th Eurovision Song Contest after event roiled by protests over war in Gaza

MALMO, Sweden -- Swiss singer Nemo won the 68th Eurovision Song Contest early Sunday with "The Code," an operatic pop-rap ode to the singer's journey toward embracing a nongender identity.

Switzerland's contestant beat Croatian rocker Baby Lasagna to the title by winning the most points from a combination of national juries and viewers around the world. Nemo, 24, is the first nonbinary winner of the contest that has long been embraced as a safe haven by the LGBT community. Nemo is also the first Swiss winner since 1988, when Canadian chanteuse Celine Dion competed under the Swiss flag.

"Thank you so much," Nemo said after the result from Saturday's final was announced soon after midnight. "I hope this contest can live up to its promise and continue to stand for peace and dignity for every person."

At a post-victory news conference, Nemo expressed pride in accepting the trophy for "people that are daring to be themselves and people that need to be heard and need to be understood. We need more compassion, we need more empathy."

Nemo's victory in the Swedish city of Malmo followed a turbulent year for the pan-continental pop contest that saw large street protests against the participation of Israel that tipped the feelgood musical celebration into a chaotic pressure cooker overshadowed by the war in Gaza.

Hours before the final, Dutch competitor Joost Klein was expelled from the contest over a backstage altercation that was being investigated by police.

Nemo - full name Nemo Mettler - bested finalists from 24 other countries, who all performed in front of a live audience of thousands and an estimated 180 million viewers around the world. Each contestant had three minutes to meld catchy tunes and eye-popping spectacle into performances capable of winning the hearts of viewers. Musical styles ranged across rock, disco, techno and rap - sometimes a mashup of more than one.

Israeli singer Eden Golan, who spent Eurovision week in Malmo under tight security, took the stage to a wall of sound - boos mixed with cheers - to perform the power ballad "Hurricane." Golan shot up the odds table through the week, despite the protests that her appearance drew, and ended in fifth place behind Nemo, Baby Lasagna, Ukrainian duo alyona alyona & Jerry Heil, and French singer Slimane.

Eurovision organizers ordered a change to the original title of her song, "October Rain" - an apparent reference to the Oct. 7 Hamas attack that killed about 1,200 people in Israel and triggered the war in Gaza.

The show was typically eclectic Eurovision fare, ranging from the pop-zombie folk hybrid of Estonia's 5Miinust x Puuluup to the folk-inflected power pop of Greece's Marina Satti and Armenia's Ladaniva and the goofy 1990s nostalgia of Finland's Windows95man, who emerged from a giant onstage egg wearing very little clothing.

Britain's Olly Alexander offered upbeat dance track "Dizzy," while Ireland's gothic Bambie Thug summoned a demon onstage and brought a scream coach to Malmo, and Spain's Nebulossa boldly reclaimed a term used as a slur on women in "Zorra."

Nemo had been a favorite going into the contest, alongside Baby Lasagna, whose song "Rim Tim Tagi Dim" is a rollicking rock number that tackles the issue of young Croatians leaving the country in search of a better life.

The contest returned to Sweden, home of last year's winner, Loreen, half a century after ABBA won Eurovision with "Waterloo" - Eurovision's most iconic moment. ABBA did not appear in person in Malmo, though their digital "ABBA-tars" from the "ABBA Voyage" stage show did.

A trio of former Eurovision winners - Charlotte Perrelli, Carola and Conchita Wurst - performed "Waterloo" in tribute.

Though Eurovision's motto is "united by music," this year's event has proven divisive. Protests and dissent overshadowed a competition that has become a campy celebration of Europe's varied - and sometimes baffling - musical tastes and a forum for inclusiveness and diversity.

Thousands of pro-Palestinian demonstrators marched for the second time in a week on Saturday through Sweden's third-largest city, which has a large Muslim population, to demand a boycott of Israel and a cease-fire in the seven-month Gaza war that has killed almost 35,000 Palestinians, according to the health ministry in the Hamas-run territory.

Several hundred gathered outside the Malmo Arena before the final, with some shouting "shame" at arriving music fans, and facing off with police blocking their path. Climate activist Greta Thunberg was among those escorted away by police.

Klein, the Dutch performer, was ejected from the competition after a female member of the production crew made a complaint, competition organizer the European Broadcasting Union said. The 26-year-old Dutch singer and rapper had been a favorite of both bookmakers and fans with his song "Europapa."

Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS, one of dozens of public broadcasters that collectively fund and broadcast the contest, said that as Klein came offstage after Thursday's semifinal, he was filmed without his consent and in turn made a "threatening movement" toward the camera.

The broadcaster said Klein didn't touch the camera or the camera operator, and called his expulsion "disproportionate."

Tensions and nerves were palpable in the hours before the final. Several artists were absent from the Olympics-style artists' entrance at the start of the final dress rehearsal, though all appeared at the final.

Several competitors made reference to peace or love at the end of their performances, including France's Slimane, who said: "United by music for love and peace."

Nemo said the Eurovision experience had been "really intense and not just pleasant all the way."

"There were a lot of things that didn't seem like it was all about love and unity, and that made me really sad," Nemo said. "I really hope that Eurovision continues and can continue to stand for peace and love in the future. I think that needs a lot of work still."
