Virtual YouVisit Offers a 360-Degree Online Look at UH Campus

By Chris Stipes

The easy-to-use YouVisit provides prospective students, alumni and the current UH community a convenient and immersive way to explore campus from anywhere in the world.

“Imagine visiting the University of Houston — all the buildings, labs and popular gathering places that power the Powerhouse — from anywhere in the world.”

Now, thanks to virtual reality, you can step inside M.D. Anderson Library or stand on the 50-yard line of TDECU Stadium all from the comfort of your couch. Launched last fall, the YouVisit virtual tour enables prospective students, alumni and the current UH community to explore campus like never before across all major devices, including desktop,

Featured prominently on the UH homepage, the narrated tour is split into two segments — a University Tour, which includes the Student Center, athletics facilities and multiple residence halls among its 17 stops, and an Academic Tour, which includes each of our 15 academic colleges and the interdisciplinary Honors College.

“For those of us who know the University well, our striking facilities, amenities and attractive landscaping in the middle of the nation’s fourth largest city will come as no surprise. My hope is that our virtual tour will reach new audiences and establish a lasting connection,” said Lisa Holdeman, UH vice president of marketing and communications.

university of houston group visit

So far, that’s exactly what’s happening.

In just the first month following the tour’s launch, more than 10,000 virtual visitors from 91 countries and more than 50 states and territories — California, New York and Florida leading the way — took the tour. Nearly 20% either scheduled an actual campus visit, applied online or requested more information about the University. The new tour, also accessible on the UH Go mobile app and on the YouVisit website, is proving to be a valuable tool for reaching and recruiting new students.

university of houston group visit

“The virtual tour allows us to make an instant connection by bringing everything our amazing campus has to offer right to a prospective student’s front door. We hope it will spark their interest to come and take an actual tour or even apply,” said Mardell Maxwell, executive director of UH admissions. “It expands our reach and engages students here and abroad who perhaps weren’t even considering UH, and that’s very positive because we have a terrific story to tell.”

Loaded with a supplemental collection of photos and videos, the tour not only highlights prominent facilities, but also the numerous resources, academic programs and fun facts that make UH a Tier One public research institution. For example, did you know that the Conrad N.  Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management has a one-of-a-kind wine lab or that the College of Optometry is the only U.S. optometry college featuring an on-site surgery center educating students in pre- and post-operative patient care?

That’s all in the tour, which is available in English, Spanish, Mandarin and Hindi. But no matter what language is being spoken, the basic message is the same:

Hey, take a look at this!

Selva Research Group

Welcome to prof. selva’s research group at the university of houston.

university of houston group visit

Our group’s research spans a wide range of advanced materials processing and device fabrication techniques for energy applications such as high temperature superconducting thin film tapes and photovoltaics as well as for flexible electronics. A key capability of our group is single-crystalline-like thin films of various materials on inexpensive, flexible substrates by roll-to-roll processing. Epitaxial growth of oxides, nitrides, silicides, arsenides, phosphides, germanium, silicon and compound semiconductors on lattice mismatched, practical substrates is large emphasis of our research. A variety of thin film process technologies such as metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD), ion beam assisted deposition (IBAD), magnetron sputtering, e-beam evaporation, inkjet printing and solution coating are being employed. Unique, state-of-the-art equipment for thin film and bulk materials processing, electromagnetic characterization at high magnetic fields and low temperatures, as well as semiconductor property measurements are available in our laboratories.

An area of our expertise is high-temperature superconducting materials for energy applications. This project is currently funded by awards from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Advanced Manufacturing Office and the DOE Office of High Energy Physics. Through these awards and previous programs with ARPA-E, Office of Naval Research and the Army Research Laboratory, we have developed thin film superconductor tapes with record-high performance in high magnetic fields and low AC losses. These high performance superconductor tapes have been designed for use in the next-generation electric machines, high-power wind turbines and high-field magnets for high energy physics and superconducting magnetic energy storage.

Another area of research is high-performance crystalline semiconductors on inexpensive flexible substrates. Using our unique single-crystalline-like template technology, we are working on high mobility epitaxial semiconductor thin films such as gallium arsenide, silicon and germanium on metal and flexible glass substrates. These semiconductors are being used to fabricate high-efficiency, low-cost solar cells and high-performance flexible electronics. Our project on high efficiency GaAs on flexible metal substrates is being funded by the U.S. Department of Energy SunShot Initiative.

Strong industrial partnership is a hallmark of our program. Nearly all our funded programs include industrial partners which is not only evident of the practical relevance of our research but also enables a robust transfer of our technology to industry. In addition, many companies collaborate with our group through sponsored research programs to specifically address challenges in their manufacturing operations. Small businesses have been cultivated by our group to transition our technologies to commercialization with funding from Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. Students graduating from our group have transitioned to employees of some of our partner and small business companies.

Our research has extended beyond the UH campus into the University’s Energy Research Park where a 13,000 sq.ft. building has been established for the  Energy Devices Fabrication Laboratory . The Laboratory consists of clean room process areas, device fabrication and metrology areas as well as a toxic gas room to safely handle several types of exotic gases to process several advanced materials. A unique MOCVD tool for compound semiconductors with dual reactors for roll-to-roll as well as wafer processing is present. Photovoltaics (PV) and Flexible Electronics are being pursued in this Laboratory using our unique substrate technologies.

We have established a University-wide center, the Advanced Manufacturing Institute (AMI) with a mission to function as a central manufacturing research organization of the University of Houston so that a wide range of technologies being developed by UH faculty can be scaled up to manufacturing and eventual commercialization. An example is our Advanced MOCVD reactor design that has yielded three-fold improvements in performance, efficiency and throughput that is now being scaled up to pilot manufacturing. AMI is also developing novel in-line quality control tools for high-yield manufacturing and innovative quality assurance tools for rapid, 100% inspection of product in device operating conditions.

Our group currently consists of 17 graduate research assistants, five research faculty and scientists, an equipment engineer and a full-time safety manager. Research assistants in our group receive exceptional mentorship not only in conducting very intensive, milestone-driven scientific research but also in broad engineering skill sets at his unique facilities and by his support engineering and scientific staff. All our research assistants benefit from excellent day-to-day coaching from the many research faculty, scientific and engineering staff in our group, on critical thinking skills to solve complex research problems, hands-on expertise with unique, industry-scale, state-of-the-art equipment and industry-standard safety training and best practices. Hence, students in our group are uniquely prepared to tackle scientific and engineering challenges which are uncommon in academia. We are seeking more research assistants to join our group and experience the stimulating research environment in world-class facilities.

Welcome to the city’s largest public university, with over 45,000 students enrolled across this university system’s four campuses in 2021. UH is considered a commuter college—which is to say that most students live off-campus—making it a favorite for local Houstonians seeking higher education without having to stray far from home. It’s also considered a dream school for aspiring healthcare professionals, future leaders in renewable energy, and those who value community service and public art initiatives.

Group visits to the University of Houston are available Wednesdays and Fridays and include a session with an admissions counselor, a walking tour of the campus led by a current student, and a quick tour of one of the student housing buildings. The UH admission team can accommodate groups of up to 100 high school students (with at least one chaperone for every 10 students) for the two-hour guided tours. Once you arrive, campus visits are completely free, though you should consider reserving at least two weeks in advance to ensure availability.

Your driver can drop you off at the UH Welcome Center in time for your tour, then park the bus at 5000 Gulf Freeway near the University of Houston Technology Bridge. The university asks oversized vehicles to park close to the fence between Buildings 13 and 14 and asks drivers to leave a note on the dashboard with their contact information in case the bus needs to be moved in an emergency.

Phone: (713) 313-7011

After your tour of the University of Houston, hop back on your bus for a quick ride—literally a few blocks—to the prestigious Texas Southern University.

First established in 1927, this historically African American public college is one of the largest and most comprehensive of its kind in the country, with over 10,000 students enrolled per year and over 100 academic programs. TSU is one of the top 5 institutions in the U.S. when it comes to granting doctoral and professional degrees to African Americans, and out of all the institutions in Texas, it awards the most college degrees to African American and Hispanic students.

Even better, the campus is nestled in the heart of Third Ward—one of Houston’s fastest-growing economic districts. The university partners with many businesses and corporations in the area, which means students have ready access to internships and interviews within walking distance of campus.

Long story short: if your students want to support an HBCU, value an education that’s second-to-none, and plan to get a head-start on their professional development, TSU is a great place to call your alma mater.

Groups of 10 or more people may request to visit TSU Monday through Friday at 10 a.m., 12 p.m., and 2 p.m.—just be sure to reserve your preferred time slot at least two weeks before you plan to drop in. Wishing to tour with 50 or more prospective students? Consider making an event out of it, and ask the admissions offer about organizing a TSU Day, which includes an admissions presentation personalized to your organization, a walking tour of campus, and lunch at one of the on-campus dining halls.

Parking on the TSU campus is fairly limited, especially near the university’s visitor center. If you plan to bring a large group here via charter bus, consider having your driver drop you off and find parking elsewhere downtown.

Rice University

Address: 6100 Main St, Houston, TX 77005

Phone: (713) 348-0000

This private university boasts a 300-acre tree-lined campus and nationally recognized research programs—including one of the best materials science programs in the country and an acclaimed nanotechnology research program. Given its highly selective and scholarly reputation, this school tends to attract brainiacs and over-achievers in all fields, though many prospective students are drawn to the computer and physical science programs.

Want a taste of student life at Rice University? Lucky for you, the admissions office here offers a wide range of campus-culture-based events and tours for prospective students. Sit in on a class, plan an overnight stay with a current student in one of the dorms, grab lunch on campus with an admissions counselor, or schedule an old-fashioned walking tour and information session—whatever program best fits your students’ schedule and style, Rice University can work something out so they feel welcome.

The Rice University Welcome Center offers guided tours tailored to groups of elementary, middle school, high school, and adult visitors most Tuesdays and Thursdays. Groups larger than 40 people will be asked to break up into smaller sections, and tour reservations should be requested at least two weeks in advance.

Parking on this campus can be tricky, especially during peak touring season. If you plan to bring any kind of oversized vehicle to campus—including a charter bus or minibus—you’ll need to call the Rice University parking offices at (713) 348-2020 and let them know. Your driver can drop everyone off at the Office of Admissions in time to catch your tour, park the bus, and meet back up with your students when it’s time to roll out.

Touring higher learning options with your youth group or religious organization? Why not check out the University of St. Thomas! It’s the only Catholic college in Houston, but the curriculum features more than faith-based classes (though it does offer religion studies as well!). This private institution features reputable accounting, business, and nursing programs, as well as close proximity to the Museum District and Midtown’s stretch of local-favorite restaurants. One of the biggest draws to this private institution, however, is its small size—on average, only 1,500 students are enrolled here at a time—and 11:1 student to faculty ratio.

With a tiny student body and campus comes limited parking options, especially this close to the city center. Street parking is available around UST’s perimeters if the on-campus lots fill (which is likely if you’re visiting while class is in session), but when you’re taking in the sights and information sessions with your students, the last thing you’ll want to worry about is feeding the meter. Rather than carpooling to the campus and paying multiple parking fees, reserve a charter bus or minibus shuttle. That way, your driver can drop everyone off on campus, find a spot in the free, bus-friendly lots near Hermann Park, and meet back up with you at the visitor center once the tour wraps up.

Rice University students launch cost-saving healthcare platform

KTRK logo

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- In a world where healthcare can be a maze, a group of Rice University students is helping everyday people find their way.

"I spoke with doctors and found the true issue with facing healthcare wasn't just making sure the patients are able to live healthy lives, the actual conditions themselves, but in fact, navigating the healthcare insurance system," Arunima Jaiswal said.

Jaiswal is one of nine women who created The Healthcare Navigator , an online platform to save patients time and money.

Kayla Grimes is the Founder and President of the Houston-based startup.

"We give you the ability to actually measure the doctors and the hospital's performance and quality so that you can be assured that the care that you're going to is quality care. We also help with price transparency specifically." Grimes said.

Navigating the healthcare system alone can be overwhelming.

According to the National Institutes of Health, 88% of Americans are health illiterate, meaning they struggle to understand the intricacies of their healthcare needs.

Grimes knows the difficulty firsthand. In her five years working in the healthcare field, she saw the struggles patients-even her own grandmother-went through.

"Seeing her go through her medical issues and seeing the pitfalls and me helping her and guiding her through it, I knew that not everyone is lucky to have someone like that to tell them like, no, you don't wanna do that at all." Grimes shared.

The Healthcare Navigator has six features, including Cost Compass, which pulls and compares prices for procedures. Also, Pocket Doc, where you can find the best doctors that fit your needs. The creators worked with the National Patient Advocate Foundation to gather the data.

"You can filter for so many things so that you don't have to keep scrolling and scrolling and scrolling. Just put in what you want, and that's it," Grimes said.

The Healthcare Navigator is offered to individuals for $15.99 a month. The service is also available to employers and schools looking to empower their employees and students. You can visit the site, here .

Florida Gators Set for Huge Recruiting Weekend

Cam parker | may 31, 2024.

Florida Gators recruiting prospect Javion Hilson of Cocoa

  • Florida Gators

With the Florida Gators all-in on the offseason, all eyes are now on its recruiting efforts, especially in the 2025 class.

On Friday, the Gators began its first major official visit weekend of the summer with two commits and 12 targets visiting the campus. Defensive lineman Jeramiah McCloud and running back Chad Gasper compile the current list of UF commits visiting this week.

Gators Illustrated compiled a list of its targets taking official visits.

Four-star OT Ziyare Addison , Sumner (Riverview, Fla.)

Headlining this weekend’s visitors is consensus four-star offensive tackle Addison (6-4, 280 pounds). Considered a top target by Florida, Addison may not be as tall or heavy as the Gators’ usual tackle targets, but his footwork, speed (clocked a 12.84-second 100-meter dash, according to 247Sports) and length (6-10 wingspan) make up for that.

Not to mention, he was teammates with true freshman safety Greg Smith III .

Florida is definitely in the mix, but he’s considered an FSU lean at the moment, but a successful visit in Gainesville could close that gap. He recently released his top-nine schools with Oregon, Georgia, Penn State, Ohio State, Michigan, Florida State, Florida, UCLA and Stanford making up the group.

After his visit to Florida, Addison will take official visits to Oregon, (June 7), Penn State (June 14) and FSU (June 21).

Four-star QB Antwann Hill , Houston County (Warner Robbins, Ga.)

Right now, Hill (6-5, 215 pounds) is considered a Memphis-lean with Florida in the mix behind. However, early playing time at Florida isn’t a positive recruiting pitch. With 2024 five-star DJ Lagway already enrolled and set to take over after Graham Mertz leaves, it could be a couple years of waiting before he sees the field in Gainesville.

For now, Florida cannot get bogged down in being comfortable in its QB situation and needs to continue going after top prospects. A strong visit could close the current gap.

To that end, Florida is considered a favorite for 2026 quarterback Will Griffin for Jesuit (Tampa, Fla.).

Hill will visit Memphis on June 7 before going to Texas A&M the following week.

Four-star EDGE Javion Hilson , Cocoa (Fla.)

The only player committed to another school on this list, Hilson (6-3.5, 225 pounds) is currently committed to FSU, but his commitment is far from over.

Right now, UCF and Alabama are catching steam, according to the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine . The benefit for Florida is they have the opportunity to make the first impression. A solid weekend closes the gap before it’s too late, especially with Hilson taking visits to the previously mentioned three schools after Florida.

He will visit Alabama on June 7, UCF on June 14 and FSU on June 21.

Florida is in the process of trying to flip another previous Seminole commitment Jaelen Waters . Waters is a four-star cornerback in the 2026 class.

Four-star DL Myron Charles , Port Charlotte (Fla.)

Charles (6-4, 300 pounds) is one of three defensive linemen visiting this weekend, and he may be the best of the group. He is considered a top-25 defensive lineman by all major recruiting sites.

Florida does have the benefit of having one current interior defensive line commit (Jeramiah McCloud), but depth matters, especially with the status of 2024 signee Michai Boireau up in the air. Adding a player of Charles’s stature certainly helps.

He recently released a top-six consisting of Florida, Miami, FSU, Georgia, Ohio State and Texas. He will travel to USC next weekend with Miami and FSU coming after.

Four-star WR Joshua Moore , West Broward (Pembroke Pines, Fla.)

Right now, Florida and Florida State seem to be neck-and-neck in Moore’s (6-3.5, 205 pounds) recruitment.

With one committed receiver in its 2025 class and the Gators’ set to lose as many as three receivers due to eligibility (Chimere Dike, Ja’Quavion Fraziars and Elijhah Badger), Florida is in a prime spot to get a jump in Moore’s recruitment and help alleviate those future losses.

He will visit Miami next week with visits to FSU and Georgia coming after.

Four-star WR Naeshaun Montgomery , Miami Central (West Palm Beach, Fla.)

Florida seems to be currently in a battle with Miami for Montgomery (6-1, 165 pounds), but Penn State is just as much in the mix.

247Sports’ Tom Loy crystal-balled Montgomery to the Nittany Lions in March , but Florida and Miami have caught steam recently. As stated previously, Florida is set to lose three receivers due to eligibility after next season and must find players to fill those spots.

He will visit Penn State later in June, so a successful visit is crucial for Florida to stand out.

Four-star S Jaylan Morgan , Rockvale (Murfreesboro, Tenn.)

To no surprise, Morgan (6-0, 180 pounds), is a heavy Tennessee lean according to recruiting experts. In fact, then-247Sports’ Director of Football Recruiting Steve Wiltfong gave a crystal ball for Morgan to commit to the Vols , but that was back in November.

Considering that, while Florida does have work to do to make up ground, there’s still time to get back in his favor. Morgan will visit Ole Miss on June 7, Mississippi State on June 14 and Georgia on June 21, all of whom are considered ahead of Florida for the moment.

Four-star LB Christian Gass , Eastside (Covington, Ga.)

Gass (6-4, 205 pounds) is a target high on Florida’s radar. According to Gators Online’s Keith Niebuhr , Florida and Tennessee are recruiting Gass the hardest with Georgia not far behind.

Getting the first summer official visit of the three is crucial for Florida’s chances if they are to beat out its rivals for the talented linebacker. This is also a big opportunity to see what kind of recruiter linebacker coach Ron Roberts is after Florida lost arguably its best recruiter in his predecessor Jay Bateman.

Gass will visit USC, Georgia and Tennessee in that order.

Four-star DL Jarquez Carter , Newberry (Fla.)

Carter (6-2, 270 pounds) is one prospect Florida got an early jump on due to living in nearby Newberry, but his recruitment is far from over.

Gators Illustrated caught up with the local prospect during the Panthers’ spring practice , and he explained that he’s in no rush to commit and is focused on taking his official visits. Florida does have the benefit of hosting Carter previously and are considered the front runners, but there’s still work to be done to earn his commitment.

“I've been there multiple times, but hopefully this is the visit that hits,” he told Gators Illustrated .

Carter currently has a top-six of Florida, Penn State, UCF, FSU, Miami and Ohio State and has visits scheduled to Penn State (June 7) and UCF (June 14).

Three-star TE Micah Jones , Madison Central (Madison, Ms.)

Ole Miss currently leads in Jones’s (6-5, 220 pounds) recruitment with Florida well behind. Inside the Rebels’ David Johnson and OMSpirit's Zach Berry have both predicted for the Rebels to land Jones.

An early visit may be just what Florida needs to get back in contention as he currently doesn’t have another official visit lined up.

Three-star TE Tae’shaun Gelsey , Riverside (Jacksonville)

Gelsey (6-4, 210 pounds) is arguably the heaviest Florida lean of the group of targets visiting this weekend. Right now, UCF and Tulane are the two schools to watch, but the Gators seem to be far ahead, according to On3’s Keith Niebuhr and Corey Bender.

He did schedule a visit to Tulane for June 20, but a strong visit in Gainesville will go a long way in securing a commitment from a player who many consider Florida the frontrunner in his recruitment.

He revealed on Friday prior to his Florida visit that a top-six will come soon.

Three-star ATH Kaylib Singleton (DB), Fleming Island (Orange Park, Fla.)

Currently being recruited as a defensive back by Florida, Singleton (6-1, 175 pounds) joins Gelsey as arguably the heaviest Florida lean in the group, and a successful visit could mean a commitment soon.

Swamp247’s Blake Alderman gave a crystal ball in March for the Gators to land Singleton , and On3 agrees that Florida is the heavy front-runner. Decent size and tremendous speed (11-second 100-meter dash) stand out despite a lower ranking.

He will visit Syracuse next week and Rutgers the week after to round out his early visit schedule.

With only five commitments in the Class of 2025 , the Gators only have more pledges than Vanderbilt and Mississippi State who each have four. However recruiting is a marathon, not a sprint, and the Gators have a big chance to make up ground this weekend.

Pro-Palestinian protesters arrested and suspended after barricading inside Stanford University president's office

A view of encampment at the White Plaza as Stanford students and Pro-Palestinian protesters are gathered.

More than a dozen pro-Palestinian protesters at Stanford University were arrested — and some immediately suspended from school — Wednesday after they briefly took over the president's office, authorities said.

In the latest provocative campus action calling for divestment from Israel in the wake of the country's war with Hamas , students and alumni entered President Richard Saller's office about 5:30 a.m. PT, according to the group’s spokesperson.

They vowed to "remain inside the building and are refusing to leave until their demands are met," the spokesperson said in a statement.

But within three hours, the building appeared to be back in university control after campus police and Santa Clara County Sheriff’s deputies took action, officials said.

"We are appalled and deeply saddened by the actions that occurred on our campus earlier today," according to a joint statement from the university president and Provost Jenny Martinez.

A campus police officer was injured by protesters during the clear-out, and damage was "done inside the building" along with "extensive graffiti vandalism on the sandstone buildings and columns of the Main Quad," the Stanford administrators said.

"This graffiti conveys vile and hateful sentiments that we condemn in the strongest terms," the officials continued. "Whether the graffiti was created by members of the Stanford community or outsiders, we expect that the vast majority of our community joins us in rejecting this assault on our campus."

The school took immediate action against students involved.

Thirteen people were arrested inside the building and any "who are students will be immediately suspended" and seniors among the group "will not be allowed to graduate," the officials said.

It wasn't immediately clear if "will not be allowed to graduate" meant students would be barred from commencement ceremonies or kicked out of school entirely without being able to claim a degree.

Wednesday is the last day of classes for the spring term with graduation ceremonies set for June 15 and 16 .

"We have consistently emphasized the need for constructive engagement and peaceful protest when there is a disagreement in views," Stanford spokesperson Dee Mostofi said. "This was not peaceful protest, and actions such as what occurred this morning have no place at Stanford."

The protesters are demanding that the school divest itself of any financial interests in any companies "that provide material and logistical support to Israel's current military campaign," according to the group.

Students set up encampment at Stanford to demand end to Gaza war, divestment from Israel

College students across the nation staged campus protests this spring, demanding that their schools withdraw any investments they say are helping Israeli forces in their military operations in the Gaza Strip.

Israeli forces have been attacking the Palestinian enclave since Hamas invaded Israel on Oct. 7.

The most prominent U.S. campus action against Israel was taken by Columbia University students who took over a key building, Hamilton Hall.

The protests led to campus leaders bringing in New York City police officers to take back the building and clear a protester encampment. On-campus graduation ceremonies had to be moved to a football stadium 100 blocks off campus.

Bregman and Diaz homer in the 8th to lift the Astros to a 7-4 win over the Cardinals

HOUSTON (AP) — Alex Bregman and Yainer Diaz homered in the eighth inning, helping the Houston Astros top the St. Louis Cardinals 7-4 on Monday night.

“It was great,” Bregman said. “It was a full team effort. For everybody to play a big part in that game was huge for our offense.”

Bregman tied it at 4 when he hit a leadoff drive to left off JoJo Romero (2-1). It was Bregman’s fifth homer in his last seven games and No. 9 on the season.

“It’s beautiful,” manager Joe Espada said. “That’s it. It’s what we need.”

With two outs and Jake Meyers aboard, Diaz homered off the wall in left for his fourth on the year and first since April 11.

“It felt almost like a weight was lifted,” Diaz said through a translator. “Baseball is one of those sports that’s a lot about confidence and when you’re going through the stretch that’s I was going through sometimes some of that confidence goes away. So it definitely felt good when I hit that home run.”

Chas McCormick then reached on an error on shortstop Masyn Winn and swiped second ahead of Jose Altuve’s RBI double.

“The bullpen has been really good and some of these guys are going to have nights like that and you can’t blame them for it,” St. Louis manager Oliver Marmol said. “They’ve competed extremely well and JoJo has been really good for us, just had a tough night.”

Rafael Montero (1-1) got three outs for the win, and Josh Hader worked the ninth for his ninth save.

Yordan Alvarez hit a two-run homer, helping the Astros to the win after Kyle Tucker departed in the third inning after fouling a ball off his right shin. Tucker said after the game that he was OK and that X-rays were negative.

Nolan Gorman homered twice and Alec Burleson also went deep for the Cardinals, who lost for the third time in four games.

There was one out in the first when Burleson sent a slider from Justin Verlander into the seats in right field. Gorman connected with two down.

An RBI single by Nolan Arenado made it 3-0 in the third.

Tucker got hurt in the bottom of the inning and was replaced by pinch-hitter Mauricio Dubón, who drew a walk. Alvarez followed with his 12th homer on a drive to right.

Gorman hit his 13th homer of the season with one out in the fifth to make it 4-2.

Alvarez hit a one-out double in the sixth before the Astros cut the lead to 4-3 on an RBI single by Meyers with two outs.

Verlander allowed seven hits and four runs in five innings.

Kyle Gibson struck out eight in 5 2/3 innings for St. Louis. He was charged with three runs and five hits.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Cardinals: Marmol said RHP Keynan Middleton was visiting a specialist Monday in New York after experiencing pain and stiffness in his right forearm. Middleton made five appearances for Double-A Springfield before experiencing the setback.

Astros: General manager Dana Brown said Monday that RHP José Urquidy is getting a second opinion on his injury amid reports that a second Tommy John surgery is possible. ESPN was first to report the right-hander will visit Dr. Keith Meister in Arlington, Texas, on Monday. ESPN reported Meister is expected to recommend Tommy John surgery. “That’s not the information we have right now,” Brown said. “And so that’s why we’re getting a second opinion. So, we’ll know more in a couple of days.”

Houston RHP Spencer Arrighetti (3-5, 5.98 ERA) opposes RHP Andre Pallante (1-1, 3.94 ERA) when the series continues Tuesday night.
