Norfolk Island has a unique geography with a small population. The primary industry on Norfolk is tourism and the government is independent of Australia in most respects except for policing, defence and education. Norfolk Island is a tax free haven of Australia.

More information for Flora and Fauna , Norfolk Language , Beach Guide and Beach & Sun Safety .

Norfolk Island is a 3855ha, 8km x 5km, three million year old volcanic outcrop located in the South Pacific Ocean, approximately 1000 kilometres east of the Australian coast, 1670kms ENE of Sydney, 1065kms NNW of Auckland and 772kms SE of Noumea. It is almost at the same latitude (29 02 S, 167 57 E) as Australia's most easterly point, Byron Bay. Norfolk's highest point is Mount Bates at 319 m.

Norfolk Island has two uninhabited neighbours just off its southern shore. About a kilometre offshore lies Nepean Island - a small islet of coral and sandstone which provides a haven for thousands of seabirds. Much of Kingston is built from blocks quarried there by Lieutenant King's convicts. Phillip Island - 6 kilometres south of Point Hunter - is a volcanic mass rising to 300 metres at its highest point.

Climate & Clothing

Norfolk's sub-tropical climate is tempered by the surrounding sea. The temperatures range from 19C to 28C in the height of Summer and 12C to 19C in Winter. Click Here for up to the minute weather information .

Drinking Water

Norfolk's tap water is clean and safe to drink unless otherwise stated. Most drinking water is rain water collected in tanks and some hotels rely upon bore water as their primary source of drinking water.

Customs & Quarantine

Australian Commonwealth Customs and Quarantine laws do not extend to Norfolk Island, however, local Territory laws apply. A local customs duty is imposed on most items entering the Territory. Some exemptions exist. Quarantine controls generally mirror those on the mainland. Imports of fruit, vegetables, flowers and seeds are prohibited as are pork and poultry from New Zealand.

Norfolk Island time is 11.5 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), 1.5 hours ahead of Australian Eastern Standard Time, half an hour ahead of Eastern Daylight Saving Time and 1.5 hours behind New Zealand.

Immigration

A passport is preferred, however photographic identification is acceptable for Australian Residents only. If travelling from New Zealand a passport is required. Australian passport holders do not require a Visa.

Telecommunications

Public WiFi access areas are avaialble around the island. Visitors can also purchase a tourist mobile plan from Customer Care office at the Council building in Burnt Pine if required.

Electricity

240 volts AC, 50 cycles, three flat pin plug. Electricity is generated locally by large diesel generators and power surges are common so the use of surge protection devices is recommended for all electronic equipment, especially computers and modems.

Australian currency is used on Norfolk Island. Credit cards are also accepted.

Tipping is not expected on Norfolk Island, however, it is customary so if you are happy with someone who has tried that little bit harder and gone the extra mile, then a tip is in order and always appreciated. Giving a small tip (10% of the bill) in a restaurant is in order if the service is good.

Getting Around

A taxi service is available on the Island, however, you can not simply flag one down - you will have to book a taxi in advance if you want to go anywhere. There is no public transport on the Island but small rental cars are plentiful.

Cars drive on the left hand side of the road. Look out for cows, they have free run of the Island (except in the town centre) and they have right of way - it is an offence to hit a cow and you will be fined if you do.

Norfolk Island lifts coronavirus travel ban and reopens to tourists

Roy Yvonne Norfolk Island

After four months of strict isolation, Norfolk Island has launched a major tourism campaign and is encouraging visitors to take a trip "overseas".

Key points:

  • Norfolk Island is now open to tourists but restrictions apply for those from Victoria, NSW and ACT
  • Since March only residents and essential staff have been allowed to travel there
  • Travellers must apply for entry permits before setting foot on the island

The new campaign promotes the Australian territory as a safe and coronavirus-free domestic destination, but not all locals are happy about it.

Accommodation provider Roy Nobbs said it was too early to open the border.

"We've all felt very safe here until now," Mr Nobbs said.

"There's been absolutely no-one in my accommodation and I'm quite happy with that because we don't want the virus here on this island."

Guest house owner Jackie Pie said she would like to see the border stay closed until September.

"We're dying to see our tourists again but as July and August are our quietest months it makes sense to wait," she said.

Others, including Naomi Thompson, were cautiously optimistic about restrictions easing.

"As a business owner I'd like to see people coming back — it could be the best season we've had — but at the same time I want my community to stay safe," she said.

A crowd gathers at Norfolk Island cemetery.

Restrictions for Victoria, NSW and ACT

Norfolk Island is located 1,600 kilometres east of mainland New South Wales.

From today an entry pass will be required for all travellers and there are restrictions in place.

Visitors travelling from Victoria will not be permitted, while those from New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory will not be welcome until July 24.

Visitors from any other state will be free to enter the island without quarantine if they do not overnight in NSW or ACT during transit.

While Norfolk has remained coronavirus-free, it has faced harsh restrictions.

In March non-essential visits were banned after the island's administrator placed the territory in a state of emergency to protect its elderly population against the spread of coronavirus.

In April heightened fears led to the introduction of rules to stop people leaving their homes because some residents, recently returned from the mainland, were flouting quarantine measures.

By May lockdown measures had eased and patrons were once again allowed to dine in cafes, restaurants and clubs, as well as gather in groups.

Not risking it

For Norfolk Islander Geoff Le Cren, the risk of returning home was too great.

Mr Le Cren was based in Taiwan and badly wanted to see his family but he vowed not to return until the pandemic was over.

"God forbid I should be the one that's asymptomatic and bring the virus to the island," he said.

"It's not worth the risk … I have too many loved ones there and I want to keep them safe."

A Guide To Travelling To Norfolk Island – What to pack?

Updated: Jan 31, 2022

holiday to Norfolk Island

So you have made the decision to travel to Norfolk Island for your well-deserved escape. You have researched your destination choice, reviewed and chosen your preferred accommodation option, checked out the Norfolk Island tours you would like to book, read up on the local attractions, the history, the beauty of the island and, bang, it’s all booked. That’s terrific! Well done!

You sit back and smile at how clever you were and how much you are looking forward to the visit in a few months time and you just can’t wait. It’s a very exciting time – the planning part – but there’s just something you haven’t given much thought about at this stage: what do you pack?

A holiday to Norfolk Island is something you have been considering for the longest time, and now you are on your way – sooner than later. You will be able to tick it off your ‘bucket list’ finally and there will be so many memories – but what should you take?

things to pack

You will be pleasantly surprised to find that that a holiday to Norfolk Island was one of the best things you’ve ever done and it was so easy. The island is located roughly in line with Ballina on the norther NSW coast so, weatherwise, it is pretty darn good, all year round. In summer it doesn’t generally go above 28 degrees and in winter it doesn’t go below about 13 degrees overnight. So packing for all possibilities is actually a breeze.

All things considered…

With a 23kg baggage allowance per person each way you need to leave some room for your duty free shopping.

Bring a light jacket as sometimes the weather can get a little windy.

Think of layers – pack a few extra t-shirts to put on under your clothes if it is cool and take off if it is warm. The temperature will drop when the sun goes down so those layers will be handy.

It is very dark at night as there are only 4 street lights for the whole island, so torches are a great idea for night walks (or use your phone torch).

On the other hand, it can be very sunny during the day and, as there is no layer of pollution at all as there is in a city, the sun is very direct so be careful and pack a hat and some good sunscreen. It can catch you without blinking and you do not want sunburn for any reason on a holiday on Norfolk Island.

Don’t forget your camera as there is a “Kodak” moment right around every corner.

Norfolk Island has a chemist and a hospital but be sure to pack enough medication for your entire stay and maybe bring a spare script, just in case.

Any Norfolk Island holiday or Norfolk package deal requires you to supply a passport or photo identity such as a drivers licence. Don’t forget these important items when you travel and have them ready at the airport for check-in.

norfolk island holidays

There are loads of fabulous walks through National Parks and Reserves, around the Kingston convict ruins, along the beach and many more places , so bring a good pair of walking shoes.

Dress is casual at all restaurants and cafes so do not waste valuable suitcase space with formal wear.

On a Norfolk Island holiday it is good to be prepared, but don’t over-prepare. There are plenty of resources in case you think you might have missed something so a lot of things are actually already on the island.

An item that you probably will be automatically wearing is your watch, however, this may not be of any use for your Norfolk Island holiday! After you arrive you will officially be on “Norfolk Island Time” which just means no matter how long something takes, everything will be ok and will work out in the end. When you get there, you get there, so no need to rush or check that watch regularly – take it off and leave it beside the bed – it’s very freeing. Of course that doesn’t mean you should be late for your plane!

Travel overseas without going ‘overseas’

passport

Travel to Norfolk Island is a truly an ‘international experience’ but it is actually domestic so it’s an overseas holiday right here in Australia.

The first surprise is that you will travel from the International terminal from Sydney or Brisbane – currently a surreal experience to say the least in these strange post-Covid times. The terminal will be virtually deserted at the moment - no snaking lines, no waiting, no food outlets open, however, surprisingly the beloved duty free area is indeed open, ready and waiting. However, our tip is to wait until you arrive onto Norfolk Island as you might not realise that the entire island is duty free. Great discounts are offered to travellers and the duty free shopping is a surprising bonus. Favourites are alcohol, shoes, handbags, cigarettes and other surprises. Take some snacks with you on the morning of your flight to eat inside the terminal before your flight – you’ll be grateful for that bit of advice!

Food, glorious food

Food, glorious food

Another travel tip for your holiday on Norfolk Island is to bring along some of your favourite grocery items in your check-in luggage. You are allowed to bring any food items onto the island except for fresh fruit and vegetables. Sometimes grocery items can be a little expensive on the Island due to the freight costs involved so pack some of the things you eat regularly at home. There is no Coles or Woolies or Aldi on the Island.

Norfolk Island has plenty of fresh fish and beef and lots of seasonal vegetables so please bring your appetite. Remember you can cook for yourself in your self-contained apartment or avail yourself of one of our terrific eating establishments. The best holiday packages are the ones where you have the flexibility to try different things and not be locked into one type of food or location. Norfolk is all about trying different things and you should be careful not to restrict yourself to a Norfolk Island holiday deal that doesn’t allow you the opportunity to try different restaurants and Norfolk Island tours. After all, you want to pursue exciting adventures on your Norfolk Island holiday!

holiday in norfolk island

Pack a light jacket or rain jacket, t-shirt layers, your medication, your favourite snacks or foodstuffs, sunscreen, passport or drivers licence, good walking shoes, camera, phone, Aussie dollars and a great fun attitude. Everything else you need you will find on the island plus a bunch of friendly locals who will do everything they can to make sure you have the best Norfolk Island holiday possible.

What are you waiting for?

Being a little prepared, living the island life on Island Time while you are there and having some idea now of what to expect is all part of your planning process. You are now truly ready to make that easy step to hop on that plane and start actually enjoying all that planning in real time! We’ll see you soon.

Table Of Food (1)

Can I Bring Food to Norfolk Island?

Historically Norfolk Island, situated a short 2-hour flight from Sydney or Brisbane, has relied upon shipping (and in later years airfreight) to supply items not readily available on the island such as processed foodstuffs and building materials.

While an isolated location requires many goods to be imported, there are numerous businesses and practices that produce and supply the local market and support a unique way of Island life.  Long before it became a buzzword for environmental policy, “sustainability” has been the norm necessitated by the Island’s small, isolated location in the Pacific.   As a result, the fresh food that travellers see on the produce section and at the local supermarket or at road-side stalls has likely been picked fresh that morning, and enables our cafés and restaurants to offer delicious, fresh seasonal meals.

The isolated location of our island home does sometimes mean however that food stuffs such as flour, cereal, alcohol, and other processed items can be in low supply if a ship is delayed for any reason.

Travellers can bring unopened processed foodstuffs in their luggage, so long as it complies with the strict biosecurity laws enforced by the Department of Agriculture, Water and Environment for the island’s protection.

You need to be aware that Norfolk Island’s locally grown fruit, vegetables and honey are free of many diseases found on the Australian mainland. It vitally important that you do NOT bring fresh foods including fruit and vegetables in your luggage that could compromise the health of local crops.

Recent measures have been put in place to protect Norfolk Island bees. If you bring a jar of honey with you it must be no bigger than 750gms, be commercially prepared and packaged, have county of origin as Australia or New Zealand.

Remember that you must declare certain food, plant material (including wooden articles) and animal products on your incoming passenger card.  Vegetables, fruit, plants, and seeds are prohibited imports as they are a high-risk for bringing introduced disease to the Island. Pork and poultry from New Zealand are strictly prohibited.  On arrival at the airport, if you have items you do not wish to declare, you can dispose of them in the bins provided. You will not be penalised if all items are declared, even if they are not allowed into Norfolk Island. If you are not sure what you can take, ask a Biosecurity officer.

For further information for what you can bring to the Island, visit the  Australian Biosecurity website  or send them an email to [email protected] .

The holiday was fantastic, the locals very friendly and helpful and the tours were fabulous.

The vouchers for the restaurants were very generous. The five of us struggled to use the full amount on some days. Our favourite restaurant was Hillis, the food, service and ambience was outstanding.

The Seaview is in need of some TLC, but the rooms were clean and comfortable. Mobile phones in the rooms for guests use didn’t work. The view was amazing. Paul the Manager was somewhat vague about some of the arrangements, but helped where he was able.

We had requested one vehicle for the 5 of us (an SUV or 7 seater), when we arrived there were 3 cars allocated to us. Two were too small for the 5 of us, so we chose the largest of the 3. It was still a tight squeeze in the back seat for 3 people.

We had a fabulous time, everything in the package was well organised and went smoothly, tours were great, food was excellent and our voucher $$ covered the bill in most cases. Accommodation at Seaview was in a beautiful spot, comfy beds, a free guest laundry, it was a bit dated but reasonably clean. Overall it is a package we would highly recommend. Thank you for your help with the booking , Jenny and Gary

On our recent trip to Norfolk Island there was no problems at all, the booking process was easy and the information supplied to us was great. The flights, accommodation and car hire plus the extra tours organised all went well, nothing to worry about for us. As for Norfolk, it’s a beautiful island with lots of history, the fishing, surfing and walks where all great. The fishing is next level, if you’re prepared to get out and about like us you will have a great time. Warm regards, Kristen D.

Norfolk Island is a small subtropical island approximately 1,600 km north-east of Sydney and 1,100 km north-west of Auckland. The 8 km by 5 km of verdant landscape bordered by pristine coastline make up our beautiful home in the South Pacific. It only takes a short flight from Australia or New Zealand to feel totally off-grid.

Please keep up to date with our Covid travel information page.

  • Flights to our island escape are only 2.75 hours from Auckland.
  • Air Chathams  operate direct flights from Auckland to Norfolk Island. Current schedule is every Monday and Thursday.
  • Those travelling from Auckland will need a passport.
  • Visitors without an Australian or New Zealand passport may require an Australian Visitor Visa to enter Norfolk Island.

Flying from Australia

  • The flight to paradise from Brisbane is 2 hours and from Sydney is 2.5 hours.
  • Qantas  operate direct flights to Norfolk Island from the International terminal currently 3 times weekly from Sydney and 3 times weekly from Brisbane.

Carry-on luggage and personal item size limits (2024).

Just like checked bags, carry-on luggage size restrictions can vary by airline.

Carry-on Luggage Sizes by Airline

travel restrictions norfolk island

Key Takeaways

  • The carry-on size limit for many airlines is 22 x 14 x 9 inches.
  • Most domestic airlines do not have a weight limit for carry-on bags.
  • You can typically bring a carry-on bag in addition to a personal item.
  • Your personal item should be able to fit neatly under the seat in front of you.

If you're traveling with carry-on luggage and/or a personal item, you'll need to adhere to size restrictions in the same way you do with checked bags . These rules include the dimensions of your carry-on bag and, in some scenarios, even the weight.

What size luggage is a carry-on?

While carry-on luggage sizes can vary by airline, several major carriers go by these dimensions.

Airlines calculate carry-on luggage size measurements using two methods:

  • Height by width by depth:  Most – but not all – airlines measure bags by inches or centimeters using this formula: height by width by depth, such as 22 x 14 x 9 inches. (Note: The dimensions listed below, which are given according to that formula, may differ slightly from the way each individual airline formats its size requirements.)
  • Linear inches:  A few airlines have linear inch restrictions for carry-on baggage, meaning the airline gives one number for the total of all three dimensions. As long as the combined height, width and depth don't exceed that number, you're in the clear.

Can a 24-inch bag be a carry-on?

Yes, a 24-inch bag can be used as a carry-on suitcase when flying with the following airlines: Frontier, Southwest and Sun Country . However, if you're shopping for new carry-on luggage, it's best to opt for something that meets the requirements for most major airlines (22 x 14 x 9 inches or smaller).

Is there a weight limit for carry-on bags?

Most major domestic airlines do not impose a weight limit on carry-on bags; however, several international airlines have weight restrictions for carry-on luggage and, in some cases, personal items.

Carry-on vs. personal item: What's the difference?

A carry-on bag is typically stored in a plane's overhead bin, while a personal item should fit under the seat in front of you. Most airlines allow economy passengers to bring one carry-on and one personal item – such as an underseat bag – at no extra cost.

Carry-on luggage sizes by airline

Click on the major domestic and international airlines below to see their carry-on luggage size restrictions in inches for economy passengers – and note that any handles and wheels on your bags count toward size limits as well.

Domestic Airlines

Alaska airlines, allegiant air, american airlines, delta air lines, frontier airlines, hawaiian airlines, southwest airlines, spirit airlines, sun country airlines, united airlines, international airlines, all nippon airways, british airways, cathay pacific, klm royal dutch airlines, qatar airways, scandinavian airlines, singapore airlines, turkish airlines, virgin atlantic.

See all Alaska Airlines carry-on policies.

The fee is often around $20 if you pay for your carry-on baggage at the time of booking; it costs a hefty $45 if you add a carry-on bag later – and up to $75 at the gate.

See all Allegiant Air carry-on policies.

The above rules also apply to basic economy tickets.

See all American Airlines carry-on policies.

Note that if you're flying to or from Beijing or Shanghai, there is a 22-pound weight limit for a carry-on; for Singapore, there is a 15-pound limit.

See all Delta Airlines carry-on policies.

There are two instances where the carry-on bag fee is waived:

  • You're an elite member of the  FRONTIER Miles rewards program .
  • You bought a specialty ticket like the WORKS bundle.

Also note that carry-on bag fees, which typically start at around $30, depend on your destination, and that prices are cheapest if you add baggage when you make your booking. You'll pay more to add it later, especially if you do so at the airport. Sometimes it's actually cheaper to purchase a checked bag instead of a carry-on.

See all Frontier Airlines carry-on policies.

See all Hawaiian Airlines carry-on policies.

If you booked a Blue Basic ticket, you're only permitted to bring a personal item that fits under the seat in front of you. If you bring a carry-on bag, you will have to pay $65 to check it at the gate (or up to $180 if you've already checked two other bags). However, select customers with Blue Basic fares can bring carry-on bags for free. These include:

  • Active U.S. military personnel
  • Unaccompanied minors
  • Customers flying to London

If you purchase a higher-class seat or if you reach Mosaic status on JetBlue's TrueBlue rewards program , you can also bring a carry-on bag for free on a Blue Basic ticket.

See all JetBlue carry-on policies.

See all Southwest Airlines carry-on policies.

Spirit's carry-on bag fees vary between flights, but they tend to start at around $25 to $30 for U.S. domestic flights. If you need to bring carry-on luggage, it's always cheapest to pay for it when you first book your flight. It will cost you more to add a bag afterward – and at least double the initial fee if you do it at the airport.

See all Spirit Airlines carry-on policies.

The Sun Country Airlines fee for a carry-on bag is around $30 if you pay for it when booking, or more if you add it later.

See all Sun Country carry-on policies.

There's one notable exception for carry-on baggage with United: Passengers with a basic economy ticket can only   take one personal item on board – no carry-on bag. This policy applies to travelers flying basic economy domestically or between the U.S. and Canada. If you have a basic economy ticket and are going to Central or South America (including Mexico) or taking trans-Atlantic or trans-Pacific flights, you can bring a full-size carry-on bag.

See all United Airlines carry-on policies.

Aer Lingus' carry-on policy depends on where you're flying. For trans-Atlantic flights, you can bring one carry-on bag within the dimensions above, plus a small personal item for free. If you're flying within Europe on Aer Lingus, the rules are a bit different: You'll have to pay a fee to bring a carry-on with you on board, starting at 5.99 euros. However, you can check that same bag for free.

If you're flying Aer Lingus Regional (a service with smaller planes, flying mostly around Ireland and the U.K.), a smaller carry-on limit applies: 18.5 x 13 x 8 inches, with a weight limit of 15 pounds.

See all Aer Lingus carry-on policies.

All Aeroméxico customers can bring a standard carry-on bag and a personal item on board. Be careful with the weight limit, though: For international flights or basic fare flights within Mexico, these two items combined cannot weigh more than 22 pounds. So, if your carry-on bag weighs 15 pounds, for example, your personal item cannot be more than 7 pounds.

See all Aeroméxico carry-on policies.

While there's no weight limit for carry-on luggage, Air Canada says your carry-on bag should be light enough that it can easily be lifted into the overhead bin. Also note that airport purchases (for example, larger duty-free items) count toward your baggage limit.

See all Air Canada carry-on policies.

Note that both your personal item and carry-on bag (referred to as "hand baggage") combined must not weigh more than 26 pounds if you're traveling economy. The weight limit is 40 pounds for premium economy and other higher-class cabins.

See all Air France carry-on policies.

A variety of personal items (think a handbag and umbrella) are permitted as long as they fit under the seat in front of you; this includes any items purchased at the airport.

See all All Nippon Airways carry-on policies.

If airline staff put a yellow tag on your bag, it should be stored under the seat in front of you.

See all British Airways carry-on policies.

Cathay Pacific has shifted from a weight allowance to a piece allowance, and this policy varies by itinerary. Passengers are generally permitted to bring one carry-on bag plus a small personal item (and assistive devices like a walking stick), but it's best to check your booking carefully to confirm the exact allowance. You're asked to check in any baggage that's too heavy to lift into the overhead compartment.

See all Cathay Pacific carry-on policies.

Since easyJet is a budget airline, standard fares only allow customers to bring one personal item (called a "small cabin bag") aboard for free. Fees for standard carry-on bags are between 5.99 and 32.99 British pounds, depending on your destination and when you add an extra bag to your reservation.

See all easyJet carry-on policies.

The above rules apply to all economy passengers except those traveling from Brazil, whose carry-on luggage can weigh up to 22 pounds. Emirates only allows economy passengers to bring one item on board; whether you bring a carry-on bag for the overhead bin or a personal item to tuck under the seat, this bag must comply with the size limits.

See all Emirates carry-on policies.

Be aware that the 22-pound weight limit applies to both your personal item and carry-on combined. If your flight was booked through Iberia but is operated by Vueling, similar rules apply, but the size limits for your carry-on bags are slightly smaller.

See all Iberia carry-on policies.

If you're traveling on the cheaper Light ticket, you may be asked to check your carry-on bag for no extra cost, if space is limited.

See all KLM Royal Dutch Airlines carry-on policies.

See all Lufthansa carry-on policies.

The above rules apply to LowFare+ customers. Passengers who fly LowFare (comparable to Basic Economy fare) can only bring a personal item (underseat bag) measuring 15 x 11.5 x 7.5 inches.

See all Norwegian carry-on policies.

Qantas

Economy passengers can opt to bring a nonrigid garment bag measuring 45 x 24 x 4 inches (or 73 linear inches) instead of a standard 22 x 14 x 9-inch carry-on bag. The above rules apply to all economy tickets and vary for higher classes on international and domestic flights with Qantas.

See all Qantas carry-on luggage policies.

Qatar Airways allows passengers to bring multiple personal items provided they fit under the seat in front of you. Unlike with other airlines, laptops and laptop bags do not count as personal items and must fit within your main hand baggage allowance. For tickets issued in Brazil, the carry-on weight limit is 22 pounds.

Be careful: Qatar doesn't accept carry-ons longer than 20 inches, which is shorter than many other airlines.

See all Qatar Airways carry-on policies.

Ryanair is a low-cost carrier, so unless you pay extra, you can only bring one small bag that fits under the seat in front of you, per the personal item guidelines above. To bring a larger carry-on bag, travelers need to purchase Ryanair's Priority & 2 Cabin Bags option, which typically costs between 6 and 32 euros depending on your destination.

Most (but not all) Scandinavian Airlines fares allow you to bring one traditional carry-on bag, plus a personal item, which SAS calls an "underseat bag." There's one exception: Passengers traveling within Europe on the Go Light fare must pay for a larger carry-on bag. If you booked a Go Light ticket for intercontinental flights, a carry-on bag is included.

See all Scandinavian Airlines carry-on policies.

Singapore Airlines has an unusual method for measuring carry-on bags – the dimensions of the bag must not add up to more than 45 linear inches total. For example, a bag measuring 15 x 15 x 15 inches would be suitable. All passengers can bring one bag of this size, plus a smaller personal item. The personal item, whose dimensions are specified above, does not count toward the 15-pound carry-on limit.

See all Singapore Airlines carry-on policies.

See all Turkish Airlines carry-on policies.

Virgin Atlantic lets every passenger bring a carry-on bag, including children younger than age 2. You can bring a bag weighing no more than 13 pounds for your child, in addition to a collapsible stroller and/or car seat. Each passenger is also allowed to bring a handbag or small backpack, an umbrella, a walking stick and airport purchases. Take note: Laptops do not count as personal items on Virgin Atlantic and should fit into your main carry-on bag. There's no specific size limit on the other personal items, but bags or airport purchases should fit under the seat in front of you.

See all Virgin Atlantic carry-on policies.

Note that the above rules apply to passengers who book a TimeFlex or Premium Fare, as well as anyone traveling with a child under age 2 and/or requiring special assistance at the airport.

Why Trust U.S. News Travel

Amanda Norcross is a seasoned traveler who packs just one carry-on bag and a personal item – even when adventuring with her toddler . She used her personal experience and research skills to put together this guide, and notes that even if your carry-on bag meets size restrictions, you may still need to check it at the gate because of limited space in the overhead bin. Luckily, it's still free.
