Do you want to know which one of your friends is the better detective? If you love a good whodunnit, Clue (or Cluedo) is the perfect game to try the next time you hang out. Anybody could be a suspect, so it’s your job to figure out who committed the crime, where it happened, and what weapon they used. Whether you’ve played the game before or are learning for the first time, we’ve got you covered. Keep reading for everything you’ll need to know to set up your game and start the investigation!

Things You Should Know

  • Number of Players: 3–6
  • Required Materials: Clue board game, note sheets, pencils
  • Objective: Correctly guess the hidden Suspect, Weapon, and Room cards by deducing what cards other players have.

Step 1 Set the game board in the middle of the players.

  • Play Clue with 3–6 players that are 8 or older.

Step 2 Place all 6 character pawns and weapons on the board.

  • Even if you don’t have 6 players, use all 6 pawns since any of them could still be suspects in the game.

Step 3 Give each player a detective’s note sheet and pencil.

  • If you don’t have any more detective note sheets, list all the Suspects, Rooms, and Weapons on sheets of notebook paper to give to each player. Alternatively, buy more note sheets if you want official copies.

Step 1 Shuffle the Suspect, Room, and Weapon cards into separate decks.

  • These cards represent the person who committed the crime, what weapon they used, and where it happened. Whoever can guess the 3 hidden cards correctly wins the game.

Step 3 Shuffle all the cards together and deal them out to the players.

  • It’s okay if players don’t have the same number of cards.
  • You may look at your cards, but do not show them to any of the other players. Revealing your cards gives other players more information and will help them deduce the hidden cards faster.

Step 4 Mark what cards you’re dealt on your note sheet.

  • For example, if you have the Suspect Mrs. Peacock, the candlestick Weapon, and the kitchen Room in their hand, then these cannot be in the envelope.

Step 1 Roll the dice and move your pawn on your turn.

  • On later turns, if you’re in a Room that has the words “Secret Passage” in it, you can move to the listed room instead of rolling the dice.
  • If another player is on a space in front of a Room’s door, you must wait for them to move before you’re able to enter the Room. If you get blocked in a room, then you have to wait until your next turn to see if the pawn moved out of your way. [9] X Research source

Don't underestimate the suspects. In Clue, even with fewer players, use all six suspect pawns on the board. Leaving out pawns can lead to confusion and make it harder to deduce the killer. Remember that every character is a potential culprit, so keep your mind sharp and place all six suspects on the board – the killer could be anyone!

Step 2 Make a “Suggestion” for a Suspect and Weapon whenever you enter a Room.

  • Example : After moving into the Study, you might say, “I suggest that it was Colonel Mustard with the Lead Pipe in the Study.” Move the yellow Colonel Mustard pawn and the Lead Pipe token into the study.
  • There are no limits on the number of suspects or weapons that you may have in one room at one time.
  • Making Suggestions helps you find out what information other players have, so choose Suspects, Weapons, or Rooms that you don’t have in your hand.

Step 3 Ask other players if they have any of the cards you just named.

  • When someone shows you a card that you suggested, you know it can’t be hidden in the envelope. If no one has the card, then you know for a fact it’s one that was hidden.

Step 4 Continue taking turns to learn more information.

  • One way to win at Clue is suggesting cards you already have in your hand. If you suggest Professor Plum used the Rope in the Ballroom, and you have the Rope and Ballroom in your hand, then Professor Plum is in the envelope if no one else reveals the card.

Step 5 Make a final “Accusation” when you’re sure you know the hidden cards.

  • Keep in mind that you may only make 1 Accusation per game. If you get the Accusation wrong, then you’re out of the game and not allowed to make any other guesses. Return the cards to the envelope and continue revealing your cards to other players when they ask.

  • If you want to play with 2 players, deal 4 cards face-down and set them next to the board. Any time you make a Suggestion and the other player doesn’t have one of the cards, secretly look at one of the face-down cards to learn what it is. [14] X Research source Thanks Helpful 0 Not Helpful 2

About This Article

Ashton Wu

Clue, also known as Cluedo, is a popular 3-6 player board game where players collect clues and try to solve a murder. To set the game up, place each colored pawn on its corresponding color space on the board. Place the weapon pieces randomly in the rooms so there's no more than one weapon in each room. The deck of Clue cards features room cards, suspect cards, and weapon cards. Divide these cards into 3 separate piles, and shuffle each pile. Then remove 1 card from each pile without looking and place the 3 cards in the case file envelope. Now set the envelope in the middle of the board. Shuffle the 3 piles of cards back together and deal them all to the players one by one face-down. Give each player a pencil and a sheet from the detective notebook. Players use their detective sheet to track their guesses and eliminate suspects during the game. The detective sheet should always be kept private from other players. Next, each player picks a character to play with. To start the game, Ms. Scarlet always goes first, then play goes clockwise. On a player's turn, they start by rolling 2 dice and moving that number of spaces in any direction. If they enter a room on their turn, they can guess who they think the murderer is, what the murder weapon was, and where the murder took place. Players must guess the room that they're currently located in. For example, the player might say out loud, "I think it was Mr. Green in the study with the candlestick." Whenever a player makes a guess, they move the character and weapon they guessed into the room with them. Then the player on their left must show them one card from their hand if they have a card that matches one of the things the player guessed. Once the guessing player is shown a card, they check that card off of their detective sheet and then the player to their left goes next. Players continue to make guesses and narrow down the possibilities until they've solved the murder. Once a player feels confident they've solved it, they can enter the room where they think the murder took place and make an official accusation by saying the name of the murderer, the murder weapon, and the room out loud. Then that player opens the envelope and checks the 3 cards inside without the other players seeing. If their accusation was right, they win the game! If they're not right, they lose the game and play continues with the other players. To learn how to win the game, keep reading! Did this summary help you? Yes No

Cluedo retro board game also known as a clue

About – Description

Clue or Cluedo as it’s known outside of the US is one the oldest murder mystery board games that many of us have played or at least seen in someones home, especially if you was born before the 1980’s.

Clue close up

There are and has been too many variations and editions to mention here. I am still fond of the original kind of boring classic look that I got for Christmas quite some time ago.

As with many popular board games (especially the classics) clue also comes in a mini travel size and then variations from retro to Star Wars are available, and many others. If a family member is a star wars or Harry Potter fan then these theme types may be ideal for them, although losing the old suspects like Col. Mustard seems to feel wrong to me.

Who’s it best suited for?

Cluedo is ideal for families with children aged around 8 or even 10+. I would say the average game lasts about 20 – 45 minutes which is not too much time for a young family to play. For kids under 8 years old this game may not be fun enough to keep their attention.

Of course this game is also suited for those without children, although some adults may wish for more complexity to the game.

Three or more players (closer to 6) makes Clue more fun.

The feedback from our visitors is that kids still love Clue just as much as I did in the 1980’s.

Skill – Complexity

Clue is a fairly easy game to learn and play. Most people pick it up (even kids) during the first few rolls of the die.

There’s certain amount of memorizing required which adds to the fun for many players but you don’t have to become the next Sherlock Holmes.

Set Up – Playing Rules & Instructions

Cluedo requires a straight forward set up of dishing out a suspect (6 in total and you can choose), weapon and room location cards of the mansion where a murder will happen.

clue board game murder weapons

Cards are also placed in a small envelope which hold all the information about the murder (i.e., room, weapon and murderer). Nobody knows what these cards are and the object of the game is to find out what they’re.

cluedo board game cards

Every player takes a turn of rolling the die and moves around the board into rooms, and they ask questions to other players to find what is on the cards that other players hold. If the last two players revealed they have Col. Mustard and a dagger then these are eliminated from the potential murder suspects and weapons used.

The elimination process eventually reveals the murderer and as soon as someone guesses correctly they’ve won.

Each player has a note pad to write down suspects, weapons and the rooms that are not involved in the murder.

Final Thoughts

Taking out the Clue board game on a winters evening for the family to share some time together is still popular and a hell of a lot of fun. There is enough lighthearted guessing skill needed to keep things amusing, but not to serious.

Really pleased to see this old classic still running with more mileage left on the clock for it to continue to play on.

It’s not only her position that’s advantageous but also the strategic possibilities that arise from taking the first turn.

If you’re more inclined to embody a figure of valiant composure, then Colonel Mustard , with his dignified military background, might be your character of choice. He may not lead the play, but being second could play a critical role in the outcome of your game.

The cast also includes the likes of Professor Plum , the intellectual with insights into the mansion’s deeper secrets, and Mrs. Peacock , the elegant social butterfly whose connections may point to hidden alliances or motives.

Not to be underestimated, Mr. Green , often portrayed as a shrewd businessman, might leverage his calculated moves to stay one step ahead of suspicion. But remember, these personalities are nothing if not deceptive.

Rounding out the group is the enigmatic Dr. Orchid , a biologist with a PhD in plant toxicology, a new addition to the Clue legacy. Her scientific prowess may hold the key to untangling the web of lies.

While immersing yourself in the role of one of these six characters, consider the implications their backstories and starting positions may have on your gameplay. As every good detective knows, understanding the players involved is just as critical as the evidence laid out before you.

As you select your character and step into their world, keep in mind that your choice does more than just assign you a starting position on the gameboard — it also immerses you in the unfolding story of this compelling detective board game. So choose wisely, and prepare to use your chosen persona’s strategy to your advantage in the captivating setting of Clue, the quintessential mystery party game .

How to Begin Your Investigation: Game Start

Embarking on the classic detective board game, Clue (also known as Cluedo), starts with choosing your sleuthing alter ego. The enigmatic Ms. Scarlet, with her renowned scarlet token, always kicks off the sequence of play, setting in motion the turns that follow in a methodical clockwise procession. This is your starting point for the engrossing challenge of mystery solving that lies ahead.

Your first roll of the dice is more than just a number; it represents your opening maneuver in a cat-and-mouse game set within the walls of a stately mansion. The number you roll will dictate your initial steps along the board’s corridors, bringing you to thresholds, behind which secrets lurk and the story unfolds. Through the rooms’ doorways, you’ll gleam potential evidence and start constructing speculative theories about the dark deed.

As you sweep into each room, you’ll engage in a deductive dialogue with your fellow players. The act of vocalizing your suspicions—asserting a potential perpetrator, weapon, and crime scene—compels your counterparts to either support or debunk your hypothesis with their hand-held Clue cards. With each successful inquiry, your timeline of the night’s events grows clearer, and your grip on the murderers’ identity tightens.

Here’s a quick reference on how to sequence your gameplay start:

  • Select a character, keeping in mind Ms. Scarlet’s leading role.
  • Roll the dice to determine your character’s movement.
  • Move along the mansion’s halls and enter rooms.
  • In a room, vocalize a suspicion involving a character, weapon, and that very room.
  • Observe as other players use their Clue cards to affirm or refute your suspicion.
  • Follow the clockwise order ensuring fair play and systematic progression.

This is the essence of starting Clue – a game that perfectly marries the thrill of a murder mystery with the structured stratagems of a detective board game. Your ability to ask the right questions, paired with a willingness to chase down every hunch, sets you on the path to becoming the master detective who leaves no clue unexamined and no riddle unsolved.

Navigating the Mansion: Moving Characters and Entering Rooms

Mastering the art of navigating the Clue gameboard is a crucial step in becoming a top contender in this detective board game. As you take on the role of one of the game’s iconic characters, your ability to move effectively across the board becomes your greatest ally in uncovering the truth behind the mysterious murder. With every roll of the dice, strategies form and unfold, as players venture through the mansion’s hallways, aiming to enter rooms that may hold the key to solving the crime.

Clue Gameboard Navigation

Whether you roll a high number, allowing for extended movement, or a lower one dictating a shorter path, the space you occupy at the end of your turn could significantly impact your progress. It’s not just about the distance traveled; it’s about strategic placement to maximize your capacity for deduction and suggestion. Entering rooms isn’t only a physical move; it’s a calculated decision to bring you closer to making substantiated suggestions about the murderer, weapon, and location.

The Clue mansion is riddled with secret passageways that whisk characters from one room to another, sparing the need for a high dice roll. These passageways serve as a fast-track method for traversing the mansion, adding a layer of depth and surprise to your navigation strategy. Steering your character through the mansion’s corridors and doors, you shift from a passive participant to an active detective ferreting out the perpetrator.

Every step and strategic maneuver is vital because each room provides a unique opportunity to propose a scenario, which your opponents must attempt to disprove. To emerge victorious in this game of wits and suspicions, here is a concise guide to maximize your moves:

  • Analyze the gameboard and plan your path before rolling the dice.
  • Consider the benefits of each room you are capable of reaching and choose the one that advances your investigative strategy.
  • Use the secret passages to your advantage—especially when they lead you to a room yet to be explored within your deduction process.
  • Stay mindful of your opponent’s positions and their potential to disprove your suggestions.

As you move around the world of Clue, emphasizing detective acumen over luck, the strategy of smart movement is as essential as the evidence you gather. By entering rooms and challenging your peers with well-formulated hypotheses, the identity of the murderer enters ever clearer focus through each turn of play.

The Art of Deductive Reasoning in Clue

Clue, the beloved board game of suspense and mystery, invites you to sharpen your deductive reasoning as you collect evidence and solving clues . Mastering the distinction between making accusations and making suggestions is critical in devising crime-solving Clue strategies . As a detective, you must navigate the intricate web of information, wielding your detective notebook as a powerful ally in your quest for the truth.

Making Accusations vs. Making Suggestions

An essential element of Clue is understanding when to make an accusation and when to opt for a suggestion. A suggestion is a strategic probe for information, allowing you to deduce the facts without revealing your own cards or hypotheses. They are a means to gradually narrow down the possibility pool, eliciting responses from other players that help piece together the puzzle.

In contrast, an accusation is your final call. It’s the all-in move where you assert the exact answers of the who, the where, and the how of the murder. A correct accusation leads to a win, while an incorrect one can prematurely end your game. Weigh your options and gather ample clues before you decide to publicly declare your solution.

How to Use the Detective Notebook Effectively

The detective notebook is indispensable in Clue that champions methodical analysis over hasty conclusions. Every piece of information garnered from suggestions should be meticulously recorded. Keen observation of how players respond to suggestions, as well as which cards they reveal, can offer invaluable insights into their hand. Use your notebook to keep track of which cards have been accounted for and which possibilities remain. By deductively reasoning and cross-referencing the known vs. the unknown, you will inch ever closer to cracking the case.

Remember to maintain the secrecy of your notebook, as it contains the insights you’ve gleaned from your rivals. This record is a reflection of your own crime-solving journey and plays a vital role in formulating a winning strategy. Here is a snapshot of how to best utilize this detective tool:

Your detective notebook is your silent partner in Clue, aiding in the strategic elimination of false leads and solidifying your deductive reasoning . It’s through diligent note-taking and analytical thought that you’ll develop into an adept detective, ready to solve the Clue mystery with elegance and intellect.

Clue (Cluedo): Strategies for Success

For those engrossed in the murder mystery game of Clue, evolving from a novice sleuth to a master detective comes down to a mix of keen strategy and meticulous observation. To elevate your standing in the realm of mystery solving , it’s essential to understand and apply effective Clue game strategies . This section will guide you through time-tested tactics that can help turn the tide of investigation in your favor.

One of the foundational strategies is making suggestions every time you enter a room. This maximizes the gathering of information and effectively leverages your turns. By suggesting various combinations of suspect, weapon, and room, you’re able to test the waters with your opponents’ responses. The trick is to not just gather information randomly, but to do so in a way that builds on your previous knowledge, thereby systematically eliminating impossible scenarios.

Your detective notebook is your greatest ally in this classic murder mystery game . By carefully noting down which cards have been revealed by your opponents, you build up a database of evidence. This data is critical in narrowing down the true details of the crime, ensuring that you leave no avenue unexplored. Here’s how to manage your investigative data actively:

Remember, successful detectives in Clue do not rely solely on the luck of the dice roll; they move with purpose and predictability. Understanding the layout of the mansion and strategizing your movement can place you in rooms that you have yet to explore or in positions to block other players. Each move should contribute to your overall detective strategy, gradually edging you closer to making that critical accurate accusation.

Lastly, while making suggestions is a cornerstone of any good strategy, the art of misdirection can also play a role. Experienced players sometimes make suggestions involving cards they hold to mislead others. Carefully consider the timing and the potential impact of this technique on the flow of information around the table. A well-played misdirect can lead your opponents astray, giving you the opening needed to solve the case.

In summary, the path to mastering the murder mystery game of Clue dovetails strategy with careful observation. With each suggestion, strategic room entry, and astute note-taking, you methodically eliminate uncertainty, inching ever closer to unveiling the truth. Embrace these strategies, and watch as the pieces of the puzzle fall into place, cementing your place as the ultimate detective in this enthralling game of mystery solving .

Taking Your Gameplay Further: Advanced Rules and Variations

If you’ve mastered the basics of the classic detective board game Clue, it may be time to delve into the realm of Clue advanced rules and gameplay variations that offer a new layer of complexity and strategy. These alternative rules can rejuvenate the game for even the most seasoned detectives, ensuring that each playthrough remains a fresh and exciting challenge. Explore the labyrinth of additional characters or weapons, and immerse yourself in new strategic depths as you navigate revised mansions filled with bonus challenges and unexpected twists.

Clue Advanced Gameplay

Advanced gameplay in Clue may include adding new rooms to the classic mansion, thus extending the web of potential crime scenes. Suddenly, a Billiard Room or a Study isn’t just a familiar location but a space that could hide unexpected clues or lead to novel deductions. And let’s not forget the additional layer of immersion and tactics presented by rooms exclusive to certain game versions.

Bonus cards, another feature found in some editions, can significantly alter the dynamics of the game. These cards offer unique abilities or actions that can be utilized to gain an advantage, capture additional information, or perhaps throw off other players with a well-timed strategic feint. To implement these changes, players could agree on a set of advanced rules ahead of time or introduce them at random to keep everyone on their toes. Often, players in Clue succumb to the allure of an early victory by making hasty accusations. This gamble can backfire, underlining the importance of patiently ruling out all impossibilities before staking your claim. Additionally, keen observation of your opponents’ movements and suggestions is an invaluable source of intelligence. These subtle clues might hint at the secrets concealed in their hands, guiding your next move.

To set the stage for an authentic experience, consider incorporating themed elements that capture the essence of the game. Here are some Clue party tips that will ensure your event is talked about for years to come.

Thematic Decorations and Costumes

Immerse your guests into the Clue universe with decorations that mirror the game’s iconic settings. Arrange props that echo the game’s weapons—a candlestick on the mantel or a rope coiled in the corner—to spur the detectives’ imaginations. Much like a movie set, your decor will help build a narrative, turning gameplay into a living story.

And what’s a murder mystery party without costumes? Invite your guests to come dressed as their chosen Clue characters. Whether it’s Miss Scarlet’s elegant red evening gown or Professor Plum’s scholarly suit, wearing a costume will deepen the roleplay aspect and contribute to the crime-solving game ambiance. Viewing everyone in character will not only provide great photo opportunities but also set a vibrant stage for the night’s mysterious events.

Engaging All Players in the Crime-Solving Experience

For your murder mystery party to truly be memorable, it’s important that all players are actively involved in the narrative. Create an atmosphere where every detective’s deduction is crucial and where collaborative crime-solving is encouraged, yet competitive. Host engaging activities that are related to the storyline of Clue, such as searching for hidden clues or deciphering codes, which will make everyone feel integral to the crime-solving process.

Provide each player with a detective kit, perhaps including a magnifying glass, a notebook, and a pen, to jot down clues and red herrings. Additionally, set the rules so that players have ample opportunity to interact and discuss their theories. By cultivating an environment where each participant has a role in solving the murder mystery, you ensure a vibrant and interactive experience that captures the zeal of the game.

By following these Clue party tips , your murder mystery party will be an immersive and captivating experience. It’s not just about playing a game; it’s about living out a story where every player has the chance to be the hero of their own detective tale. What is the objective of the Clue (Cluedo) game?

The objective of Clue (Cluedo) is to solve a murder mystery. Players must deduce three main details: the identity of the killer, the murder weapon used, and the room in the mansion where the crime took place, by using deductive reasoning and strategy.

Can you tell me about the origins and evolution of Clue (Cluedo)?

Clue, known outside the United States as Cluedo, was invented by Anthony E. Pratt during World War II and was originally named “Murder.” The game combined clue-finding and deduction and was later named Cluedo, a mix of “clue” and “ludo” (Latin for “I play”). It was trademarked as Clue in the United States and has evolved over the years with various thematic editions and adaptations, including a film, retaining its status as a beloved murder mystery game .

How are characters and components used in Clue?

In Clue, players choose one of the six iconic characters each with a unique starting position on the gameboard, which represents a mansion. The game components include a detective notebook for noting down clues, tokens representing suspects and weapons, and Clue cards that drive the game’s murder investigation narrative.

How do you set up the Clue gameboard?

To set up the Clue gameboard for play, place the suspect tokens on their appointed starting squares and distribute the weapon tokens across the mansion’s rooms. Choose one card from each Clue card category (suspect, weapon, and room) and place them secretly into the “case file” envelope at the board’s center. Remaining cards are dealt to the participants. Each player sets up their detective notebook to record clues and track their deduction progress.

How is the order of play determined in Clue?

The order of play in Clue starts with Ms. Scarlet and continues clockwise around the board. Players roll the dice to move their characters around the board from room to room, where they make suggestions about the crime that other players can then confirm or deny.

What is the difference between making an accusation and making a suggestion in Clue?

In Clue, making a suggestion is a speculative statement about the crime that prompts others to reveal or refute evidence, helping the player to gather information. Making an accusation is a definitive claim about the murderer’s identity, weapon used, and crime location. Accusations should be made carefully, as an incorrect accusation can result in elimination from the game.

How should you use the detective notebook in Clue?

The detective notebook in Clue is essential for keeping track of the cards shown to you and ruling out possibilities. Use it to discreetly note which clues have been revealed and make logical deductions, which will guide you in solving the murder. It is an invaluable tool for organizing information and formulating your strategy.

What should you keep in mind when formulating a strategy for Clue?

When playing Clue, it is important to gather as much information as possible by making astute suggestions and carefully observing other players’ responses and movements. Use the detective notebook to eliminate impossibilities, and always be cautious with the information you reveal to others. Strategic questioning and precise movement can tip the balance in your favor.

What are some common mistakes to avoid when playing Clue?

Common mistakes in Clue include revealing too much information when refuting suggestions, not accurately tracking all the information presented, and making premature accusations without thorough investigation. Neglecting to observe other players’ actions and deducing their probable card holdings can also hinder your ability to win.

Can Clue be turned into a murder mystery party and how?

Yes, Clue can be turned into an immersive murder mystery party. Create a thematic atmosphere by decorating the venue to resemble the game’s mansion and its rooms, using props that reflect the game’s weapons. Participants can wear costumes to represent their chosen Clue characters, adding to the fun and authenticity. A key aspect of a successful party is ensuring everyone is engaged and invested in the investigative experience.

What are the benefits of continuous gameplay of Clue (Cluedo)?

Continuous gameplay of Clue (Cluedo) sharpens your deductive reasoning, strategic thinking, and observation skills. Repeated play enhances problem-solving abilities and provides in-depth understanding of the nuances of mystery-solving. It also offers a fun and intellectually stimulating experience for players of all skill levels.

How to Win at Clue (Cluedo)

Seth Brown is a gaming expert, sharing his knowledge about board games, card games, game tutorials, gameplay, and gaming strategies. He is the author of "The Little Book of Mahjong" and is a member of the Northern Berkshire Gaming Group.

The Spruce / Alison Czinkota

Clue (also known as Cluedo) is a board game about crime-sleuthing deduction. The game is highly thematic with flowery characters, including Miss Peacock and Colonel Mustard. It takes place in different rooms of a mansion with deadly weapons, such as a knife or candlestick. By the end of the game, the goal is to deduce who killed the victim, where, and how.

If you're just focused on how to win at Clue, most of the thematic factors don't matter. Your attention should just be on getting information. Here are some basic strategies for how to determine the culprit.

Figure Out Your Opponents' Cards

Clue has 21 cards: six suspects, nine rooms, and six weapons. Thus, there are many possible combinations for "whodunnit," where, and with what. Before play begins, one person takes a suspect, room, and weapon card without looking at them and slides the three cards into the secret envelope. These cards are the solution to the crime. The remaining cards are divided as evenly as possible among the players. That means the cards you and your opponents hold are not the killing cards.

By process of elimination, you should mark off your opponents' cards. When you make a suggestion about the killing cards, your goal is to get more information. Don't ask about cards you already know your opponents are holding. The only cards you already have marked off that you should still ask about are your cards because nobody else will be able to disprove them. That strategy can confuse the other players and give you an advantage.

Eliminate One Possibility Every Turn

Eliminating options for the killing cards on each turn won't always happen. But given that narrowing down the possibilities is your ultimate goal, the person who does this fastest has a huge advantage over the other players. To this end, you should ideally be making a suggestion every turn. Any turn where you don't make a suggestion is essentially a waste.

Focus on Rooms

You can suggest any character or weapon from anywhere on the board. But your room suggestions are limited by your location. For this reason, rooms can be the hardest factor to figure out, so you should prioritize learning about them. When you enter a room, make a suggestion. If someone suggests you and drags you to a new room, make a suggestion there on your next turn.

Use the Secret Passages

Secret passages allow you to move from one room to another without having to risk rolling the dice . Thus, you'll get to make suggestions on consecutive turns, rather than an unlucky dice roll stranding you on the squares outside the rooms and stealing your opportunity. If you still haven't eliminated those two rooms, you can keep going back and forth between the rooms until someone shows you one of the cards. Until they do, it is the most efficient way to gather information.

Spend Time in Rooms You Have

Not only will spending time in the rooms you have let you learn more about the weapons and people, but you can also use the unfair summons trick. If another player is about to reach a good room to make a suggestion, such as what you think is the likely murder room, you can make a suggestion about that player's character, which will drag them back to your room. And if that player takes their next turn to make a suggestion in your room, you can simply show your room card.

Watch Now: How to Play Clue

Take notes and avoid sharing new information.

If you put in the effort to take notes throughout the game, you can play even more strategically. Write down every suggestion made, who showed a card to each opponent, who showed you each card, and which cards you have shown to each player. If you know which cards you have revealed to a player, you can show them the same cards repeatedly to avoid giving away extra information. Never share a new card when you don't have to.

Pay Attention to Opponent Suggestions

If an opponent repeatedly suggests the same item—whether it's a location, weapon, or character—it probably means nobody else can disprove that item. For instance, if an opponent makes three suggestions in a row about the revolver, chances are good that the revolver is either the murder weapon or in that opponent's hand.

Furthermore, say you're certain one opponent has the wrench card and you have the Colonel Mustard card. Then, someone else shows a card to disprove the suggestion of "Colonel Mustard in the library with the wrench." Given what you know, that card must be the library. This is why it's helpful to take notes on suggestions.

"Clue" is a classic mystery board game where players act as detectives trying to solve a murder case. Here are the rules for playing "Clue":

travel cluedo instructions

Game Components:

Game Board : Depicts a mansion with nine rooms.

Suspect Tokens : Represent the players (e.g., Miss Scarlet, Colonel Mustard).

Weapon Tokens : Represent possible murder weapons (e.g., knife, candlestick).

Room Cards : Represent the rooms in the mansion.

Suspect Cards : Represent the suspects.

Weapon Cards : Represent the weapons.

Case File Envelope : Used to hold the solution cards.

Detective Notepad : Used by players to keep track of clues.

Dice : Used for movement.

Player Pieces : Represent the characters in the game.

Prepare the Cards : Separate the suspect, weapon, and room cards into three separate piles. Shuffle each pile.

Select the Solution : Draw one card from each pile and place them in the case file envelope without looking at them. This represents the murder mystery to be solved.

Deal the Cards : Shuffle the remaining cards together and deal them out to the players.

Set Up the Board : Place the suspect tokens in their starting positions. Place the weapon tokens randomly in the rooms.

Distribute Notepads : Each player receives a detective notepad to keep track of their clues.

Determine First Player : The player with Miss Scarlet goes first (if not playing with Miss Scarlet, randomly select the first player).

The objective is to determine which suspect committed the murder, with which weapon, and in which room.

Players take turns in a clockwise direction. On your turn, do the following:

Roll the dice and move your token that number of spaces. You can move horizontally or vertically but not diagonally. You can enter and exit rooms through the doors.

2. Enter a Room and Make a Suggestion:

If you end your move in a room, you can make a suggestion. A suggestion consists of a suspect, weapon, and the room you are in. For example, "I suggest it was Colonel Mustard, in the Study, with the Revolver."

Move the suspect and weapon tokens into the room you are suggesting.

3. Refuting a Suggestion:

After you make a suggestion, the player to your left must try to refute it by showing you one card from their hand that matches one of your suggested elements (suspect, weapon, or room). If they cannot refute, the next player must try, and so on.

If a player shows you a card, you note it on your detective notepad to eliminate it from your list of possibilities. Only the player making the suggestion sees the card.

4. End of Turn:

After your suggestion and any refutations, your turn ends, and the next player takes their turn.

Making an Accusation:

When you believe you have determined the correct suspect, weapon, and room, you can make an accusation on your turn.

State your accusation: "I accuse Colonel Mustard, with the Revolver, in the Study."

Secretly look at the cards in the case file envelope.

If your accusation is correct, reveal the cards and win the game.

If your accusation is incorrect, return the cards to the envelope without showing the other players. You are now out of the game but must continue to refute other players' suggestions.

Winning the Game:

The first player to correctly accuse the suspect, weapon, and room wins the game.

Strategy Tips:

Keep Good Notes : Use your detective notepad effectively to track suggestions and refutations.

Bluffing : Sometimes make suggestions with cards you have to mislead other players.

Process of Elimination : Use logical deduction to narrow down possibilities based on what cards you have seen and what others suggest.

A fellow student has mysteriously vanished!

Playing as Harry, Ron, Hermione, Ginny, Luna or Neville, you must try to discover WHO did it, WHAT spell or item they used and WHERE it happened.

Was it Fenrir Greyback with a Cursed Necklace in the Forbidden Forest?

travel cluedo instructions

  • 6 Identity cards
  • 29 Help cards
  • 32 Dark cards
  • 21 Mystery cards
  • 40 Floo Powder tokens
  • 6 Suspect tokens
  • 6 Item tokens
  • 1 Green die
  • 1 Black die
  • 1 Label sheet

Move around the board making suggestions... but watch out! When the wheels on the board turn, fireplaces can light up, hidden doorways can be revealed, or the Dark Mark can appear. Whenever the Dark Mark appears, beware - when seen, it surely means that Dark Forces are at work.

Pick up Help cards, which will provide you with spells, allies and items that protect you from the Dark Forces and stop you from losing Floo powder tokens. Floo powder tokens allow you to travel from room to room using fireplaces.

These Floo powder tokens must be guarded carefully - if you lose all your tokens, you will no longer be able to use the magical fireplaces to move around the board!

When you're sure of your facts, go to The Burrow to make your final accusation and win the game!

travel cluedo instructions

Layout the board and turn the heels so the word START is showing on all of them.

Separate the Dark Deck and Help cards. Shuffle each pile and place them facedown in piles near the board.

Each player needs:

One sheet from the notepad.

A pencil (not supplied).

1 Help card (kept face up in front of them)

An Identity card and mover (see point 4).

Pinches of Floo powder (FP), depending on the number of players:

  • 3- player game: 8 pinches each
  • 4- player game: 10 pinches each
  • 5- player game: 12 pinches each

Place the rest in a pile near the board.

travel cluedo instructions

Shuffle the six Identity cards and randomly remove one. Turn it faceup to reveal the character who has fallen prey to Dark Magic and is missing.

Each player must then choose a character from the remaining Identity cards and place the matching colored mover on its colored start space on the board. Place the missing student and any spare cards and movers out of the game.

Separate the Mystery cards into three piles (suspects, items and locations) and shuffle each pile. Remove one from each pile and put them in the solution envelope. Be careful to keep them secret from all players - this envelope contains the solution to the mystery!

Shuffle all the remaining Mystery cards together and deal them, facedown, so each player has the same number. Place any extra cards faceup in The Burrow.

Look at the cards in your hand and faceup in The Burrow and tick them off on your notepad. If you have those cards or they are faceup in The Burrow, they cannot be in the envelope! Remember to keep your notes hidden from other players.

Place the item and suspect tokens in piles where everyone can reach them.

The player whose birthday it is next takes the first turn. Play continues to the left.

travel cluedo instructions

On each turn:

  • Roll both dice.
  • Check the black die.
  • Move (using the green die or a lit fireplace).
  • Make a suggestion, take a Help card or end your turn.

When you're sure you've solved the mystery:

Go to The Burrow to make your accusation.

On your turn:

Roll both dice and check the black die.

travel cluedo instructions

If the black die shows the star, Stake a Help card and place it in front of you, then continue to Step 3 (Move).

travel cluedo instructions

If it shows one of the location symbols, turn the wheel in that corner of the board one notch clockwise and check to see whether or not the Dark Mark has appeared.

If not, go straight to Step 3 (Move).

Note: Doors into locations may open or close and fireplaces may change when a wheel is turned.

If the Dark Mark shows up on the wheel, the black die, or both, take a card from the Dark Deck and read it out loud.

Each Dark card describes an event likely to have been caused by Dark Forces and each card shows:

  • What is happening
  • Who is affected
  • How many pinches of Floo powder could be lost
  • How you can protect yourself against the event

travel cluedo instructions

If you have a Help card that protects you, show it to the other players and then place it back in front of you. You are safe.

If you don't, you must pay the penalty by putting that many pinches of Floo powder onto the Floo powder pile. If you pay with more pinches than you need, take back the difference.

When you have used a Help card or paid your Floo powder penalty, continue to Step 3 (Move).

If any player loses all their Floo powder tokens, they can no longer use the Floo network.

travel cluedo instructions

Check the green die. You can either:

Ignore the roll and use a lit fireplace to move to another room with a lit or unlit fireplace. Each time you use a fireplace to move, pay 1 pinch of FP into the FP pile OR

Move any number of spaces up to the number you rolled.

Rules for Moving

  • You do not have to use the full roll.
  • You can move horizontally or vertically, but not diagonally.
  • Black doors are open, red doors are closed. As soon as you enter a location (through an open door), STOP MOVING!
  • You cannot pass through a closed door unless you have an Alohomora Help card.

travel cluedo instructions

  • You can pass through a space occupied by another player, but only one player can stay on the same space at one time.
  • If you are in a location at the end of one turn, you must leave it on your next turn. You may not re-enter the same location on that turn.

Make a Suggestion or Take a Help card

A. make a suggestion (only if you're in a location).

If you move to a location (other than The Burrow), you can suggest:

  • the location you are in

Example: You enter Gringotts. You suggest: "I think Snatchers did it with the Cursed Necklace in Gringotts".

Move the suspect and item tokens you have suggested into the location you are in.

The other players must now reveal whether or not your suggestion was correct, starting with the player to your left.

  • If they have one of the Mystery cards you have called, they show it to you (and only you).
  • If they have more than one of the cards, they can choose which one to show you.

Check this card off on your notepad - this proves the card is not in the envelope. Your turn is now over.

If the player to your left does not have any of the Mystery cards you suggested, the player to their left must show a card if they have one. Keep going until a player shows you a card or until all players have passed because they have none of the cards you suggested.

Your turn is now over.

B. Take a Help Card (only if you land on a star)

If you land on a star symbol, draw the top Help card from the deck and put it faceup in front of you. The Help card will be an Ally, an Item, or a Spell.

Visiting the Burrow

Enter The Burrow to make an accusation.

Make an Accusation

When you're sure you've solved the mystery, use your roll to get to The Burrow as fast as you can. From here, you can make your accusation by naming the suspect, item and location you think are correct.

For example: "I accuse Peter Pettigrew with the Jinxed Broomstick in Malfoy Manor".

Now secretly look at the cards in the envelope.

Beware: If your accusation is wrong, you are eliminated from the game. You must still answer questions to help other players, but you cannot win. Don't make your accusation lightly!

End of the Game

If you find all three of the cards you named in the envelope, you win the game. Show the cards to the other players and celebrate!

If you got it wrong, return the three cards to the envelope, making sure none of the other players see them.

  • You can make no more moves in the game, and cannot win.
  • You must continue to show cards to other players when asked.

Thinking of bringing this classic board game out soon? It'll keep the family entertained for hours — not to mention that it brings out the competitive side of people, too. And it's much shorter than a game of Monopoly, which never hurts.

How to play Cluedo

Use the links below to jump to what you'd like to know when it comes to playing Cluedo (available at Walmart ).

What are the rules for Cluedo?

How to prepare cluedo.

In the Cluedo box, you should find:

  • 1 gameboard
  • 6 character tokens
  • 6 miniature weapons
  • 50 cards (6 character cards, 6 weapon cards, 9 room cards 29 clue cards)
  • 1 case file envelope
  • 1 pad of detective notebook sheets ( buy replacement sheets at Amazon )
  • 2 dice ( buy spare from Amazon )

The idea of Cluedo is to move from room to room to eliminate people, places, and weapons. The player who correctly accuses Who, What, and Where wins. No players are allowed to look at the three cards inside the Solution Cards envelope until they are out of the game. The game starts with everyone rolling the dice, the highest rolled starts and the game proceeds clockwise. Each player's suggestion must include the room that they are in at the time. If you are making a final accusation, you can accuse a room you are not in. After making a final accusation, the player should look at the cards in the Solution Cards envelope. If all cards are correct, the player can show everyone else as proof. If even one is wrong, the cards go back into the Solution Cards envelope in the middle of the board. The game carries on without the accusing player able to play.

  • Unfold the gameboard.
  • Place each character token at their place on the board. Choose characters between you – bear in mind that Miss Scarlet always goes first.
  • Randomly place weapons in each room.
  • Shuffle the types of cards separately and without looking, place one character card, one room card and one weapon card into the case file envelope. Close the envelope and pop it in the middle of the board – don't look inside until the end of the game.
  • Place all cards together and divide the rest of them between the group.
  • Give each person a detective notebook sheet and a pen or pencil.
  • First thing first: look at your cards and note down the weapon, room, and character on your detective notebook sheet. You now know it is neither of these things inside the envelope.
  • Whoever is Miss Scarlet goes first in Cluedo. The game then continues to the left of Miss Scarlet.
  • First of all, roll both dice. Ideally, you want to be able to enter a room every turn as once inside, you can make a suggestion. There are secret passages to make this easier.
  • Move your game token to the number of spaces you roll. You can move up, down, or to the side, but not diagonally. You may not share a space with another character.
  • Once inside a room, you can use the process of elimination to guess the weapon, character, and room inside the case file envelope. You must move the weapon and character into the room you are suggesting. Once a suggestion is made, the person on the left of you must reveal if they have any cards you mentioned in their hand. If so, they must show you (and no one else) one card; you can then cross this off your detective notebook sheet and that's your turn over. If not, the next person can reveal one of their cards. If no cards are revealed, you can then accuse these three cards meaning you may have won the game.
  • You can only make one accusation per game — be sure to do this only when you are certain you know what's in that envelope. After you've made an accusation, you may look inside the envelope. If your accusation matches the cards in the envelope, you have won! If not, the game will continue but you won't be allowed to play.
  • Mrs. Peacock is one of the best characters to pick as she sits closer to any rooms than all other players.
  • Moving from room to room fast increases your chances of winning.
  • Don't forget about secret passages.
  • Include your own cards in some suggestions to throw other players off.
  • Take as many notes as possible — even note who doesn't have what card(s).
