The 10 Biggest Fall 2022 Trends From the Runways

And just like that, we're back.

Celine and Prada runway looks

Everyone's an Equestrian

Think hot pink, it's electric, aviation nation, back to basics, caramel tones, head-to-toe leather, boardroom minis.

The not-so-distant past forced the fashion universe to swap luxury for loungewear—but the industry is back and roaring. The simple act of getting dressed can be a window into our hearts and soul—optimistic or otherwise— and the Fall 2022 trend ethos was nothing short of excited. From glitzy sparkles to full leather, clothes encompassed indulgent moods and attitudes, from exceedingly elegant to ultra-eclectic. We saw a similar theme through fall's handbags ,  shoes ,  jewelry , and color trends. Whether you're starting to whet your palette for fall's crisp air à la the equestrian look or want to revitalize your wardrobe with a little (or a lot) of that tantalizing hot pink hue, the Fall 2022 trends prove that inspiration is imminent.

Tory Burch, Hermés, Dior

Tory Burch, Hermés, Dior

The fall runways took equestrianism to the masses this season— the internet has even gone so far to deem this the summer of the horse girl, and we expect the trend to ride well into the fall. From structured herringbone and elbow patch blazers at Tory Burch to quilted jackets at Burberry to stirrup strap leggings (well paired alongside riding boots), you don't have to own or ride horses to incorporate equine apparel into your fall wardrobe.

Fall fashion

Chanel, Versace, Valentino

Pre-dating the Barbiecore trend, hot pink was a focal point of the fall runways—Valentino dedicated their entire show to the vivid hue. At once, feminine, strong, and sultry, you can wear the power color piecemeal or announce your arrival with a monochrome look.

hot pink fashion trend

Bottega Veneta, Prada, Chloé

We sometimes believe less is more, especially when talking about one of the fall season's most simplistic trends— the little white tank top. Designers put their stamps of approval all over the wardrobe essential via house logos, but you don't have to spend a ton. The humble white tank comes in a variety of fabrics and price points.

Whit tank top with Prada logo

Bottega Veneta, Carolina Herrera, Altuzarra

Designers are embracing a more-is-more attitude with all over sheen. Sequins at Altuzarra mimicked those of mermaid scales, while Bottega Veneta's newly minted designer, Matthieu Blazy, designed tunics with a cool, electric green current running through them.

Sequin blazer from the FW22 runway trend

Coach, Celine, and Versacea

There's something subversive about rocking a bomber jacket—a calling to wingman Maverick from Top Gun . The fall runways thought so too. Shearling bombers infiltrated the catwalk at Coach, Celine embraced a cool collegiate version, and Versace naturally put their spin on the outerwear standby— opting for cape-like arm positioning.

bomber jacket fall trend

Miu Miu, Tory Burch, Gucci

Making his debut on the runway after a two-year hiatus, Gucci's Alessandro Michele partnered with Adidas—proving that the worlds of fashion and fitness can coexist. Tory Burch's technical knitted track jackets are paired seamlessly with fitted trousers and geometric prints.

Top from FW22 sporty trend

Gabriela Hearst, Jil Sander, Bottega Veneta

Maintaining a formulaic dress code can offer a refreshing approach to fashion. From easy  button-downs  and fitted blazers to simple yet sophisticated tees, designers are showcasing a minimalistic mentality, too, as shown on the runways of Bottega Veneta, Gabriela Hearst, and Jil Sander.

black blazer

Chloé, Michael Kors Collection, Gabriela Hearst

Warm caramel tones captivated the runways this season in silhouettes that ran the gamut, from tailored jackets at Michael Kors to buttery leather dresses at Chloé to mixed-media trenches at Gabriela Hearst.

trends

Tod's, Prada, Saint Laurent

Nothing conveys strength quite like a full-leather look. Supple leather-on-leather looks were armor-like at Saint Laurent, Tod's, and Khaite. On Miuccia's Prada runway, pink leather trenches drove that point home.

Leather dress

Designers paid extra attention to tailored pieces—not excluding the mini skirt. Above-the-knee hemlines were paired back with blazers, keeping workwear cool and compatible for the next generation of office-goers.

FALL WINTER TRAVEL FASHION TRENDS 2022

Style guide for style-conscious travelers out there. Here are a few fashionable pieces from the fall/winter fashion trends 2022 that fashion designers showcased. From New York, London, Paris, all the way to Milan and beyond. The chosen items below can work as a travel fashion trend because of comfortability.

The fashion runways this year were full of color. Designers, such as Balenciaga and Giorgio Armani, stood in unity and honored the people of Ukraine as were being invaded by Russia. The Ukrainian flag colors of blue and yellow were featured on the runways.

NEON PINK COLOR

The color pink showed up in a big way—we are talking everything pink from head to toe. Hands down, Valentino was very loud in their collection; Zendaya was a perfect model for this pink hue. Richard Quinn and Molly Goddard also had stylish pink pieces. This kind of trend is not for the faint hearted; most people avoid this loud color especially when everything from head to toe is pink.

LEGGINGS THAT ARE FLARED

Leggings are the go to travel attire of many travelers. On the 2022 fall/winter runways we saw flared leggings trending. Some with a slit, some closed, and some with a fringe. You can wear them with various shoe styles—flat sandals, chunky shoes, sandals with heels, and etcetera. Dojaka and 16Arlington are some of the designers that embraced this style.

OVERSIZED PUFFY JACKETS

Oversized puffy jackets have returned this year and they are bigger and bolder than ever. Some have belts, some have feathers, some are plain in color, and some are full on maximal. You can wear the puffy jackets with mini dresses and thigh boots; with pencil skirts; or as your creative mind chooses. Fashion designers who embraced this style on the runways included Isabel Marant, Elie Saab, Prada, and Loewe. This season most puffy jackets were super oversized and detailed. I loved the puffy coats with the maximalist look—prints, flowers, and et cetera. Vivienne Westwood carried a stunning maximal puffy jacket.

HARD SHOULDER JACKETS

Jackets with hard shoulders have been around for a while. The shapes of the shoulders come in different forms and they are bigger than ever. Most jackets on the runways had a solid bold color and came with shoulder pads that help the shoulders stand tall and broad.

Notable fashion designers obsessed with this trendy style were Balenciaga, Dolce & Gabbana, Louis Vuitton, and Lemaire. Some of the loosely fitting blazers with hard shoulders can be worn on top of a short skirt or skinny pants. This outfit makes a perfect travel style for airport or a city sightseeing or food outing.

CORSETED WAISTS

Showcasing a corseted waist has been a thing for a while. For the 2022 fall winter fashion trends, there are a few variations of corseted waists in dresses and tops—some tight and some loose. Most showcased corseted dresses were short and worn with tights. Tops came in all forms; some with long sleeves but most were sleeveless. Balmain and Dior were some of the fashion houses that carried trendy corseted clothing items.

The 10 Best Fashion Trends to Wear for Fall 2022, According to Stylists

Bring on the layers and fun pairs of boots.

travel clothes fall 2022

Few things make me happier than the onset of autumn. I live for all the back-to-school nostalgia (despite having graduated from college almost a decade ago), and the return of my favorite pumpkin-flavored snacks. But most of all, I look forward to saying goodbye to shorts and tank tops and hello to all the new and classic fall fashion trends — and I'm certainly not the only one.

If fall were a personality trait, I'd add it to my list. Every year, I make a day out of transitioning my wardrobe. I sip a piping hot PSL as I pack away my warm weather attire and try on every sweater , cardigan , and boot I own in anticipation of the many ways I'll wear them in months to come.

This year, after I say hello to my familiar friends, I will assess the gaps in my seasonal closet, considering which fall trends of 2022 I'll want to add to my rotation. There were so many grand predictions on the runway this year, with designers showcasing unique knits and statement-making embellishments (sequins, especially, ruled the runway), maximalist prints (think animal and in-your-face floral), and bold color options ( Barbie pink will still be in play). Fashion Week isn't the only place I source inspiration from when reevaluating my wardrobe, however. I flock to Pinterest and Instagram, and, being the fashion writer that I am, reach out to stylists for their recommendations, too.

Ahead, personal and celebrity stylists share the fall 2022 fall fashion trends they're itching to try once the leaves have changed color and the temperatures have cooled. Prepare for an overwhelming amount of inspiration, and the temptation to grab your wallet.

Power Suits

This time last year, sweat suits were being de-throned by the three-piece set , and now power suiting is taking its reign, which MiKADO personal style advisor, Jordan Stolch, is particularly stoked about.

"Power suiting has reigned supreme for several seasons now and isn't going anywhere, which is a big sigh of relief for a huge matching-set fan like myself," Stolch tells InStyle . "The Fall 2022 power suit has a major focus on tailoring — think structured shoulders, crisp lapels, vests, and cinched-in belted waists. The updated trend feels a lot less intimidating than its oversized-counterpart for many of my clients — women who struggled to make the wide shoulders feel anything other than the '80s."

Luxe Leather

Another trend Stolch is excited about is the sudden spotlight on what she calls "luxurious, biker-babe leather."

"[The trend is] a testament to the current zeitgeist of female empowerment, where women are unapologetically letting themselves be seen, heard, and felt in ways we've never experienced," explains Stolch. "Spanning well beyond the moto jacket, this trend is all about the integration of leather into all wardrobe categories. Think pants, blazers, crop tops, and dresses mixed with cool hardware and elevated combat boots."

Faux Fur, Baby

Personal stylist, Christina Stein , while also a fan of the leather look, tells InStyle she's looking forward to embracing a softer approach to cooler weather with faux fur.

"Bring the drama. Think CAMP," Stein says over email. "You want the coat to be the centerpiece of the outfit. You can also find furry accessories to give your outfit some character. Furry bucket hats (Versace) and furry handbags (Off-White) can still give your look that extra oomph ."

Heavy-Weight Leather Jackets

Private stylist and founder of Let's Get You , Nicole Russo, wants you to know that plastic faux leather jackets only look chic in pictures. "Thick hides in many shapes and styles [are what's] worth wearing for the next decade," she tells InStyle .

"I adore the Prada double-breasted black jacket with wide lapels, but hit up any thrift store and you're sure to find iterations from decades ago that will layer you properly in autumn. Pair yours with the spring mini you picked up and you'll have transitional dressing on lock."

Statement Boots

While over-the-knee boots are a classic fall staple that cannot be replaced, San Diego-based personal stylist and blogger Vanessa Valiente says she's looking forward to wearing boots that make a statement — "think metallic, prints, and neon colored pairs."

Back-to-School, But for Adults

Whether you miss the days of wearing a uniform or have been itching to channel the school girl aesthetic through your grown-up wardrobe, you're not alone. Back-to-school is always in the back of my mind come September, but the vibe is an especially popular fall fashion trend of 2022, and Valiente is all for it.

"Think plaids, ties, peacoats, and collared shirts," the stylist says of the look. "[It's] all about leaving the house and presenting oneself to the world. I am thrilled about these 'dress code' vibes. This is the antidote to the 'home' looks born from the pandemic."

Anything Upcycled and Vintage

Trends from the '90s and Y2K have already resurfaced for 2022, but Valiente is interested in even more retro, recycled, and vintage looks heading into the fall season.

"I am personally purchasing more consignment items versus new items after a long break from the vintage trend," she says. "It is environmentally responsible and shouldn't be a 'trend,' but it is feeling fresh as hell."

Sheer Moments

PSA: Sheer isn't exclusive to summer. In fact, according to wardrobe stylist Chellie Carlson , clients have been loving the lightweight, see-through fabric heading into autumn.

"Sheer garments make for a perfect layering piece. A statement bra under a sheer blouse is sexy yet classy and the perfect way to spice up date night or dinner with the girls," says Carson. "Sheer items also allow you to show a little skin while still being covered for those colder months."

Oversized Blazers, Always

This writer loves a blazer outfit , and Carlson tells InStyle she, too, shares the obsession, especially during the fall season.

"A good blazer is the perfect piece for the equestrian and ' clean girl aesthetic ' trends — but it is also a timeless piece to invest in. They instantly elevate any look and balance the body perfectly," Carlson explains. "Pair your blazer with a dress and sneakers for an interesting and balanced brunch look! I also love them to elevate your casual graphic tee and jeans look to the next level."

RELATED: 9 Different Types of Blazers Worth Adding to Your Wardrobe

Plaid Patterns

Personal stylist Soneca Guadara tells me that nothing says 'fall' quite like plaid , and I have to agree with her statement that the Scottish staple 'is a must-have pattern' for the upcoming season.

"Once the temperature drops into the 60s, I am all over adding some plaid here and there into my wardrobe," she declares over email. "To give the traditional print some edge, I love mixing plaid with fur, sequins, and or silk to give my outfit an updated modern look. But if you're looking to play it safe, a simple plaid skirt with a turtleneck or a plaid coat is still worth the fuss."

How to Create the Perfect Fall Travel Capsule

The Fall Travel Capsule is my favorite one to create. I am sure it stems from the fact that I grew up in Minnesota and it is my favorite season of all. For me, the fall season is crisp air and cooler temperatures, turning leaves and a warm mug of something delicious.

It is also the perfect time to take a trip. Fall is the shoulder season in many popular travel areas. You will find fewer crowds, lower rates and you get to wear cute fall travel outfits on your trip!

Every trip I take I pack a travel capsule, and this week I put together the perfect packing list of travel clothes for your next adventure, check it out!

What is a Travel Capsule Wardrobe?

The basic gist of the travel capsule is that rather than packing an outfit for day 1, an outfit for day 2, an outfit for day 3, etc….

Instead of doing that you pack versatile pieces that mix and match into different outfits. The base of the wardrobe is a neutral color palette. You add a pop of color with scarves, a top, or a statement piece.

If you are interested in learning more about 54321 and creating travel capsules, check out this post:

How Do You the Perfect Travel Capsule Wardrobe For Fall?

Check the weather forecast.

The first thing you need to do is know the weather where you are going. Fall can be unpredictable and so having the specifics at the time of your trip is important.

Early fall can bring warm weather, and regardless of when you may encounter rain. Knowing the forecast close to the time of the trip will help you to avoid issues while you are traveling!

What Activities will you do?

You will want to research your destination to know what types of activities you will do, as this will impact the key pieces you pack. This article will walk you through how I plan each trip I take!

How Long is Your Trip?

As you know, I pack carry on only. Whether it’s a week trip or 3 weeks, I bring the same amount. The difference is that I plan to do laundry for the longer trips and make a point of researching where it can be done before I arrive.

How do I Follow the 54321 Packing Formula for Fall?

As an Amazon Associate, we earn a small commission from qualifying purchases on Amazon, and also from affiliate links from other retailers you may find on the site.

I put together a packing guide and some sample outfit ideas that you can see here. Below this I walk through each section of the 54321 and give some options for you based on this guide.

Fall Travel Capsule Guide

PRO TIP: On your travel days wear an entire outfit from your packing list. This frees up space in your suitcase and makes carry-on travel easier!

5 Tops for Your Fall Travel Wardrobe

Layering is the key. I usually bring a couple of long sleeve tops, one merino wool black tee, a turtleneck sweater and a cardigan. In this capsule I chose a long cardigan vest that goes well with the tops. On warmer days it can be your outer layer.

A note on merino wool items: merino wool is an amazing travel item. It is naturally antibacterial so it is naturally odor free. That means you can wear it multiple times before it needs to be washed – perfect for carry on travel! Yes, it is expensive, but in my experience it is worth the investment.

4 Bottoms Pants/Skirts/Dresses for Your Fall Travel Wardrobe

For bottoms, I combine pants, skirts and dresses. I don’t really wear as many dresses in the fall, and so don’t need 3 of them. Plus, I took a trip this summer that included 3 separate dresses and honestly felt like I had way too many clothes. So, for this capsule, I am experimenting with pairing back a touch.

With that, this capsule includes black pants, my favorite jeans, black leggings and a midi dress. The dress is cool because you can wear it with the turtleneck sweater and it looks like a skirt.

You could swap out for a sweater dress or midi skirt very easily. Here are some options for inspiration!

3 Pairs of Shoes Your Fall Travel Capsule

I never pack more than three pairs of shoes for any trip. This one I chose Ankle Boots, White Sneakers and wedge ballet flats. I own all these shoes. The Taos sneakers are super supportive and I have literally worn them to walk all day. The ballet flats have a wedge because the super flat ones do not five me enough support.

2 Scarves for your Fall Travel Capsule

Two scarves are included in this travel capsule: 1 blanket scarf and 1 infinity scarf.

2 Jackets for your Fall Travel Capsule

For this capsule, I included a casual jacket that can be used in outfits and a weather-appropriate jacket for outdoors. You could swap the Lightweight suede moto jacket for a denim jacket or a leather jacket. And, because weather in fall is unpredictable, a packable rain jacket or trench coat is important.

Great Escapes Are Back — These Are The Vacation Essentials You Need To Plan Your Looks Accordingly

From stylish swimsuits to dreamy resortwear.

a model wearing a bikini, woven bucket hat, floral clutch on vacation

This year marks the return of the great escape. Whether you’re jetting overseas for several weeks or planning a couple of weekend getaways, 2022’s biggest vacation outfit trends are sure to be of interest. Those who cooled on shopping beloved getaway staples due to no trip on the horizon the past couple of years may feel a particular excitement. But even if you’ve steadily accumulated beach-ready attire throughout the last several months, newness always makes for exhilarating discoveries.

As the peak season kicks off for resortwear designers who focus their craft on swimwear and airy separates destined for holidays, those not exclusively associated with sun-bound travels are equally in on the spirited wanderlust. Many vacation-ready trends emerged at the forefront of the Spring/Summer 2022’s collections, from nostalgic crochet to joyful fringe and naturally woven materials, all with a hand-crafted feel. Plus, an influx of artful prints and saturated colors , many featuring exquisite artisanal touches feeling apropos for the warm months ahead.

Anjali Patel Mehta , founder and creative director of Verandah , says 2022’s freshest vacation trends center around travel separates that carry sentimentality or a story. Additionally, she’s noticed a desire for more statement-making looks, as indicated by the bolder and brighter fashion she frequently witnesses on social media. She tells TZR, “People have this feeling of wanting to live life to the fullest and bring joy back to their lives [through] color and travel.” As a result of the season’s joyful aesthetic, Patel Mehta says muted color and monotone outfits are worth retiring, at least for the moment. “A few years ago, there was a lot of black, white, grey, camel. People want to be joyful now and are expressing that through color.”

Unsurprisingly with the continued Y2K mania , nostalgia has a lot to do with the current craving for wanderlust. “There’s a bit of a ’70s throwback this season,” Patel Mehta adds, including wider cut legs, silky matching separates, and tops and pants with matching bikinis. “We’re going to be seeing a lot of prints,” the Verandah designer continues — a signature of her line. “We tell stories through print, giving the wearer a connection to the product — something that makes an emotional statement and doesn’t require too much effort.”

The season also welcomes bold accessory trends to complement breezy vacation attire and swimwear, says Net-A-Porter’s fashion director Kay Barron . She tells TZR, “Chunky sandals are a great finale to mini dresses, while all the brights in ready-to-wear are just waiting for a color clash handbag.” Similarly, Patel Mehta says the ’70s nostalgia of chunky heels will suit those in the mood for sensual vacation fashion. Keep scrolling to discover nine vacation trends to prepare your getaway wardrobe accordingly. If you haven’t yet booked a trip, the pieces ahead will inspire you to do so.

Minimum-Effort Dresses

View on Instagram

“A great dress is the most impactful way to get dressed this season, not to mention the easiest,” Barron tells TZR. But rather than adding yet another white or neutral style to your arsenal, she says it’s all about minimum effort for maximum impact via throw-and-and-go designs in brilliant, bold colors, short and sweet hemlines, or exaggerated silhouettes. The goal: A dress that packs quite the punch.

“Of course, a magnificent dress is not just for the summer months,” Barron adds. “When the temperatures drop, just add hosiery and boots, and you will have that spring in your step all year round.”

Cool In Crochet

“Crochet is a big one,” says Patel Mehta of the biggest 2022 vacation trends. “People are looking for artisan-made [pieces] that can’t be found everywhere,” she adds — something crochet designs achieve both in bright colors or neutral shades. “Our macrame pieces that are hand-knotted have been very well received.”

Souped-Up Sandals

If one rule applies to footwear this season, it’s go big or go home, says Barron. “You got used to supersize boots, and now it’s the time of the supersize sandal,” the Net-A-Porter fashion director tells TZR. As a trend with range, she adds, “The once humble sandal is ready to give a strong finish to even the simplest of summer outfits,” including chunky soles, big buckle energy, and styles that wrap up the leg.

Cutouts For The Win

As Y2K fashion continues to surge, Patel Mehta says the skin-baring look remains especially prominent in the resortwear realm. So whether you’re for a subtle skin reveal or choose to confidently bare a bit more, the season comes with many tops, dresses, and swimwear styles for your desired effect. Besides, if there’s anywhere to feel at ease in a cutout silhouette, it’s on vacation.

Bright Bags

Patel Mehta says the bold color trend applies well to vacation attire for statement-making style. Similarly, Barron says vibrant bags are a stylish and tempered approach to the mega-bright movement if saturated clothing feels too bold. “A new bag is the quickest way to update your look and nod to the new season,” says the Net-A-Porter fashion director. “Dip your toe in with a bold bag as an accessory highlight. Balenciaga’s Le Cagole is always a good idea, and we will bet that azure blue will soon become your go-to summer shade.”

Matching Separates

The matching set is often at the crux of a vacation wardrobe — a look Patel Mehta and Barron agree will remain prominent in 2022. “They say that two is always better than one, and that definitely applies to matching separates for Spring/Summer 2022,” Barron says. “Head-to-toe coordination is a fun seasonal update, not to mention a really efficient approach to getting dressed.”

This trend also offers a range, from tops and bottoms in twinning prints to coordinating colors, like Peter Do’s ivory silk pairings — a personal favorite of the Net-A-Porter fashion director, which will appeal to more minimal tastes.

2022 vacation trends matching sets linen color block top

Though minis were all over the Spring/Summer 2022 runways, Patel Mehta says the maxi will play a significant role in vacation wear, though, with a bit less volume than in previous seasons. Versions you can throw on over a bikini or wear to dinner will be a 2022 escape essential in a mix of colors and fabrics.

Versatile Pieces

Patel Mehta predicts a rise in versatile vacation pieces that can be styled in many different ways. This trend lends itself to easy dressing and simplifies packing so you can avoid cramming an excessive number of looks into one suitcase.

“My pieces can be dressed up or down with different accessories, worn in the city or at the beach,” the Verandah designer tells TZR. “We design scarf shirts , for example, that can be worn differently to make it your own. The drape plays a large part of it,” she continues. “You can tie it around your neck or just over one shoulder, tuck it in, or leave it out.”

Other versatile staples to invest in include fluid yet tailored trousers and shirts, swimwear that doubles as a bodysuit, pareos that go from skirts to tops, and dresses that work well as coverups but transition effortlessly to daily life.

2022 vacation trends versatile pieces white mini button down dress

Bucket Hats

Patel Mehta says buckets hats remain a key accessory to punctuate vacation attire this season. You can go the super-nostalgic route with a vibrant color or print, logo-emblazed design, or terry-cloth texture. Or, choose a subtler version like one crafted from natural fabrics or lightweight materials like crochet, cotton, or linen.

RS Recommends: The Best Travel-Friendly Clothing for Your Next Trip

  • By John Lonsdale

John Lonsdale

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, Rolling Stone may receive an affiliate commission.

So you booked that (maybe a little) overpriced flight for the upcoming travel season. Now what? Start by checking off your packing list. While commuter gadgets like portable chargers and noise-cancelling headphones are no-brainers, those long travel days ahead of you can (almost) be a breeze, thanks to the best new travel-friendly clothing.

Here are a few of our tips on what to pack for your upcoming trek, and the best gear to wear on the plane — and pack in your luggage .

What Is the Best Travel-Friendly Clothing?

First and, most importantly, everything you’re wearing should feel comfortable. What that means for each person will differ, but things like fabric, fit and how packable the items are will pay off when you’re on a flight and commuting. Here’s everything you should think about when shopping for travel apparel and accessories.

Comfort, Fit and Fabric: Fabric made with a bit of stretch can help keep you comfortable on a long flight or commute. We prioritized clothing items that offer a little more room so you can easily move around in them, or feel comfortable if you’re sitting for hours at a time in a tiny plane seat. Some apparel even comes with moisture-wicking materials that can help you feel fresh even if you’re far from your destination.

Packability: This feature is an important one. If you’re not wearing your gear, how easy will it be to pack down and stow inside your carry-on, checked bag or backpack? We recommend trying to wear versatile pieces that can pack away easily, or that you can wear for multiple situations. Shoes are usually a tough item to pack, as they take up the most space, so think ahead about where you’re going, and the type of footwear you’ll need most.

Most importantly, with newly-updated Centers for Disease Control and Prevention travel guidelines , it’s still essential for vaccinated (and unvaccinated) individuals to protect themselves and other travelers by wearing a mask this season.

“Wearing a mask over your nose and mouth is required on planes, buses, trains and other forms of public transportation traveling into, within, or out of the United States and while indoors at U.S. transportation hubs such as airports and stations,” the CDC recommends.

10 Fall Fashion Trends You’ll Want To Wear All Season Long

Clunky clogs, fur accessories, maxi skirts, and more.

Bella Hadid, Kim Kardashian, Gigi Hadid, Lizzo and Vanessa Hudgens and their fall trending outfits

We’re smack in the middle of the ‘Fiery Depths of Hell’ part of summer, which means that in only a few more weeks of miserable heat, fall will be back. There is something magical about a walk on a crisp morning with a spiced latte in hand and colorful leaves hitting the pavement. The enthusiasm for this time of year is not lost on me. But my favorite thing about the fall? The fashion (said obnoxiously in all caps).

Oh, the fashion. Though always a thrilling change of pace, fall fashion trends generally amount to the same old sweater/denim combo with some iteration of a black boot — but not this year. For autumn 2022, cumbersome clogs , avant-garde sweaters, and a renaissance of the dirt bike-inspired fashion trend from years past (TBT to Rihanna's moto-themed Fenty x Puma spring 2018 show) will be omnipresent in fashion and on feeds.

The sartorial vibe come September will focus on funky, elevated footwear, leather toppers, fluffy accessories, and the baggy cargo pants worn by pop-punk princess Avril Lavigne in the early 2000s. Speaking of Y2K, remember trucker hats? Yep, they’re back in full force (mostly thanks to Megan Thee Stallion ). The revival is giving me vivid flashbacks of Ashton Kutcher in his Punk’d era and, as a result, the infamous Ed Hardy and Von Dutch styles you saw atop the head of just about every celeb.

So, with fall on the horizon, I’ve spotlighted 10 of the hottest trends that you’ll be seeing everywhere soon. Keep scrolling for the fall fashion 411 (yes, I’ve decided we’re saying that again).

We at Bustle only include products that have been independently selected by our editors. We may receive a portion of sales if you purchase a product through a link in this article.

Jumbo Clogs

Clunky clogs are happening — don’t fight me on this, it’s simply a fact. While these shoes were basically unavoidable in the ‘70s and ‘90s, clogs eventually lost their “cool” factor. Now, an array of maximalist variations from the likes of Simon Miller and Lisa Says Gah! have been popping up left and right.

Abstract Sweaters

Sweaters with asymmetrical hems and edgy cut-outs have been spotted on the runway at Kiko Kostadinov, No.21, and GCDS, and on the backs of fashion girlies like Bella Hadid , Hailey Baldwin, and more.

Statement Loafers

This preppy shoe trend is very much on for fall — specifically, elevated options with chunky soles, funky prints, embroidery, and adornments. While Louis Vuitton showed peep-toe loafers, Eckhaus Latta served up ultra-bulky platform styles in various colors.

Coco Capitán Perline Chunky Penny Loafers

Leather Outerwear

Leather jackets for fall? I know ...groundbreaking. But the designs that brands put out this year are a departure from the traditional motorcycle style — I’m talking long, grungy duster jackets, boy blazers, and more unexpected outfit toppers.

Real Leather Single Breasted Blazer

Trucker Hats

Oh, the trucker hat. One of the most legendary Y2K accessories (remember when Lindsay Lohan donned one that said “Drama Queen”?). The nostalgic hat is in the beginning stages of a massive comeback. Everyone — from Hailey Bieber and Dua Lipa to Rihanna, Gigi Hadid, and Lady Gaga — has been reaching for them lately.

Trucker Hat

Oversize Button-Ups

A big, boxy button-up never really goes out of style. An enduring fashion staple, these shirts exude casual elegance. Kendall Jenner, a dedicated fan of this look, paired a blue striped version with yellow shorts and classic Adidas Sambas for a look worthy of copying.

The Perfect Boyfriend Shirt

Fur Accessories

Fluff-coated accessories were splattered throughout the fall 2022 collections, from fuzzy footwear at Loewe and Bottega Veneta, to plush hats at Versace and Gucci, and bags featuring soft textures at Fendi and Off-White.

Mou Chunky Platform Mules

Maxi Skirts

While mini skirts are also having a moment, we’re pivoting to the maxi for fall. We saw runway-skimming skirts at Dior, Etro, Chloe, Acne Studios, Altuzarra, and more. Bella Hadid has also been snapped sporting a zip-away cargo maxi skirt , as well as a denim style.

Reformation + Net Sustain Vista Maxi Skirt

Cargo Pants

These baggy, utility-style pants — a staple in the ‘90s and early-aughts — have had a big-time resurgence as of late. Both Hailey Baldwin and Kylie Jenner have rocked the Jaded London parachute cargo pants (seen below) recently.

Ecru Parachute Cargo Pants

This aesthetic is something we’ve seen on the runway time and time again over the years. Now, the bold look is back with a bang — perhaps, thanks to Rosalía’s latest album Motomami . Ever the trendsetter, Kim Kardashian recently stepped out in a pair of red, white, and blue color block pantaboots by Balenciaga that were giving total motocross vibes.

The Fall/Winter 2022 Trends Vogue Editors Are Shopping Now

The fall 2022 shows gave us a lot to look forward to this season, from Khaite’s delectable assortment of leather jackets to Saint Laurent’s dresses that skimmed the floor with an elegance that seems only right for the fall and winter seasons. Plus there were endless options of wardrobe classics , from classic pea coats and perfect tailoring. Their wearability and of-the-moment feel make many of these fall 2022 trends the perfect candidates for our editors’ wish lists. In fact, everything from the season’s beautifully brushed knits—perfect for layering!—and ultra-baggy jeans to designer tank tops have found themselves in our wardrobes already, and now that winter is around the corner, heavy duty motorcycle boots inspired by Miu Miu and floor length skirts have graced our shopping carts for the season ahead.

Here is a shoppable guide of the fall/winter 2022 trends to wear this season and a handpicked edit of the pieces our editors are buying right now.

BERGDORF GOODMAN

I used to have a bit of an adverse reaction to wearing suits, or anything tailoring in general. But I have to say that the fall 2022 womenswear shows, which featured an abundance of tailoring, started to slowly shift my perspective. Now that it’s finally layering season, I’ve found myself leaning into suiting and tailoring more than I ever thought I would. It started with my purchase of this CJR neon jacket, which felt like the perfect piece to start, given how untraditional it is with its bright color and hulking fit. Now I’ve just been thrifting jackets. I’ve found a great double-breasted slouchy blazer for everyday layering, and now looking for a more structured oversized jacket for dinners and evening events. I also watched Tàr recently, so there’s that, too. I’m officially in my tailoring era.— Jose Criales Unzueta, fashion news writer, Vogue Runway

Miu Miu's fall 2022 show undeniably went viral in every aspect—ballet flats, mini skirts, tennis polos, and more—but one thing we weren't talking about from that show was how models wore leather biker boots . As someone who is usually a fan of a knee-high leather boot or a kitten-heeled bootie, the mid-rise biker boot is also a surprise to my liking. But these days, I want to channel Sienna Miller in the 2010s strolling around the city in her distressed biker boot. The biker boot looks better, in my opinion, when it's a little worn in. A few pairs have also been on my Vestiaire wishlist; just waiting for the chillier days to come for me to finally make the plunge. —Irene Kim, editorial coordinator, Vogue Runway

Bright Knits

Gabriela Hearst Lawrence cashmere sweater

Typically I am a very neutral dresser, so while these knits are a little out of my comfort zone, they feel right for right now. I own Extreme Cashmere’s No.53 it’s the most incredible shade of green and has a heavy luxe-feeling weight and a great shape to throw over everything from a slouch pant to leggings. I also purchased Zara’s Pepto Bismol-colored fuzzy pink shrunken sweater that’s a little more playful, which I teamed with a leather pencil skirt in the Vogue office just last week.– Lisa Aiken, executive fashion director, Vogue.com

Saint Laurent double-breasted peacoat in wool

After the last Fall 2022 shows, the items I came away thinking about most were the perfect pea coats at Saint Laurent. It started with the first look out—a perfect black double-breasted number over a silvery bias dress and continued with variations in length and fabrics. Halfway through, I was weighing the merits of leather versus tweed. Perennially chic and cool in every iteration. —Virginia Smith, global head of fashion network

Winter Color Blocking

Tory Burch colorblock honeycomb jersey dress

I find it very hard to wear color in the winter—even if that means brown! I've been seeing a lot of great color-blocked, go-go-graphic knits that do all the work for you. They're retro in nature (I can't deny a 1960s twist!) so this is one trend I'll be all over. Honorable mentions go to Tory Burch and her wonderful maxi A-line dresses that feature Calder-esque shapes and those striped knits from Sergio Hudson.– Lilah Ramzi, commerce and parties editor

Sheer dressing and lingerie-inspired looks are a huge trend this fall. Since I tend to stick to a fairly neutral color palette, layering in transparent and delicate pieces is an easy way to add visual and textural interest. Tory Burch studded ballet flats

The fall/winter 2022 runways were full of glittering dresses, shining separates, jewel-toned party-ready wear , and embellished accessories from the likes of Dries Van Noten, Bottega Veneta, and more. I’m adapting this festive portion of the season’s collections into my wardrobe by starting small with a pair of silver studded ballet flats. I love the juxtaposition of an everyday shoe silhouette with embellishments suitable for the holiday season and formal occasions. With every step, a peep of silver reveals itself from outfits as understated as relaxed-fit trousers and a crew neck sweater, offering a subtle statement I can wear every day.— Madeline Fass, market editor

Floor-sweeping maxi skirts are my favorite trend right now. I guess you can call them the sophisticated version of puddle pants. The best part is that even when temperatures start to drop below freezing point, you can wear cozy warm leggings underneath them, and no one will notice. So I’ll be living in long, columnar designs similar to Ann Demeulemeester’s wool maxi during dressier moments and Khaite's casually cool denim number for laidback outings. —Alexis Bennett, commerce writer

Marni striped brushed mohair-blend cardigan

Mohair really piqued my interest last fall and winter. One of my heavy-rotations pieces was a Junya Watanabe x Supreme sweater crafted in a delightfully scratchy mohair fabric. I loved having something super textural to touch throughout the day. Once we approach the colder side of fall, I’m excited to snatch up some more mohair for sure. Scraggly knits are a great way to add instant character to any outfit. You immediately feel like a Sesame Street character. I love this colorful, almost boyish mohair-blend cardigan from Marni. I’m all in on super- baggy jeans . After spending many of my teenage years in extra-skinny jeans, I’m finding relief in the breezy, easy silhouettes. Khaite shellar shearling-collar leather jacket

While sitting at Khaite’s runway show last season, all I could say to my colleague—other than noting the epic the Talking Heads soundtrack—was, “Which leather jacket do we want?” The collection showed multiple silhouettes, and they were all perfect, from the bomber to the blazer to the lacquered puffer. And now I am being seduced by the array of transitional slim-line, long-length ’90s jackets too. With many strong options from which to choose, this is going to be a highly considered investment purchase for the season ahead. —L.A.

I’ve always been drawn toward the polished appeal of tailoring, whether it’s via boxy blazers or slouchy wide-leg trousers, so when I saw the clean lines of fall 2022’s preppy trend , I knew I’d be a fan. From Prada’s pleated midi to Marine Serre’s punk-inspired tartan, this is less tennis-club whites and more anarchic school uniform meets Annie Hall . I’ll be injecting some preppy styling into my new-season wardrobe with kilt-inspired skirts, polished loafers, and plenty of white shirting. —Joy Montgomery, senior commerce writer, British Vogue

Saint Laurent wool-crepe maxi dress

Saint Laurent’s fall 2022 show served 56 perfect looks, in my opinion. I would be forever content if I could wear an iteration of every look; it was all so elegant and simple. The maxi lengths specifically spoke to me as someone who is 5 feet 10 inches and always struggling to find things cut long enough to skim the floor. I loved the silhouettes and what the styling of big jackets over the maxidresses brought—sharp blazers or bomber styles hitting specifically mid thigh. I’m obsessed with this black maxidress that has just dropped on Net-a-Porter ; it sums up the timelessness of that show. —Naomi Smart, commerce director, British Vogue

The double-bag styling trick is designed for the working commuter—one bag to store the essentials (wallet, keys, phone) and a second bag for the office extras (laptop, notebook, planner). I Scoured the New Fall Drops—I'm Freaking Out About These 51 Finds

best-fashion-fall-2022-collections-302652-1664218706605-main

Sorry to say this, but  summer 2022  officially ended on September 22, and  fall 2022 is here. Though I'm devastated to see the hot temperatures go (I'm from Florida, can you tell?), it does feel so exciting and downright inspiring when that crisp  fall air starts to hit in the morning. You can finally layer your cute knits, bring out your boots , and bundle up in a cozy coat . But if you dragged out all your cold-weather clothes only to realize that your wardrobe might be in need of some refreshing, you're in good hands.

I've been keeping tabs on some of the most exciting fall 2022 drops, so you can add some newness to your outfits this season. I spent time browsing each collection and picked out only the best, most standout pieces from the brands Dôen, Alex Mill, Staud, Miaou, and J. Crew, so you can find what piece—or multiple pieces—speak to you. Looking for some skin-baring matching sets? Miaou definitely has some options. Or if you're all about  cottagecore vibes, you can find so many romantic, lacy, and floral styles from Dôen. Of course, I also had to include  J. Crew in the mix since buzzy head designer  Olympia Gayot took over. Keep scrolling below for the best designs from these five fall 2022 drops.

This belted number is calling my name.

Dôen + Charleston Dress

Dôen + Floryn Top

The ruffles on this top will catch the fall breeze.

Dôen + Mia Henley

Have you ever seen a more sophisticated henley?

Dôen + Rhoda Dress

This has been a popular silhouette that you can layer over a turtleneck or regular long-sleeve when the temperatures start to dip.

Alex Mill + Boyish Vest

Vests aren't going anywhere, and this corduroy style gives it some added texture.

Alex Mill + Boy Pant

And make sure to pair it with the coordinating pants for a head-to-toe look.

Alex Mill + Sherpa Work Jacket

This sherpa work jacket was so popular when it first dropped that it sold out. Now that it's available again, don't miss out on it.

Alex Mill + Standard Jumpsuit

A one-and-done jumpsuit in this olive shade makes fall dressing effortless.

Alex Mill + Betty Turtleneck Sweater

This gorgeous marigold turtleneck keeps any icy wind away from your neck.

Alex Mill + Phoebe Pant

Carpenter pants (and really any type of utility pant !) are trending, so you'll want to cop a pair of these immediately.

Miaou

Miaou + Corset

This toile print is everything.

Miaou + Moni Skirt

Wear this midi skirt on its own or with the matching corset.

Miaou + Imogene Corset

Obsessed with this Bambi -esque print.

Miaou + Micro Mini Skirt

What's a miniskirt without an even more leg-baring side slit?

Miaou + Felix Sweater

This super-cropped sweater pairs well with any high-waisted pants.

Miaou + Reno Skirt

Or you can go all out and wear it with this low-rise striped mini.

Miaou + Long Sleeve Tee

A plaid see-though long-sleeve is the ultimate layering piece for fall.

Miaou + Tommy Pant

The brand brought back its popular Tommy Pants with its signature silver chain at the waist for fall 2022, so snag it fast!

Miaou + Chuck Corset

You'll absolutely turn heads in this snakeskin printed corset.

Miaou + The Binx Skirt

Add the matching skirt with a silver chain for even more of a "wow" factor.

Staud + Jeromine Sweater

I'm sensing this color is going to be big in a couple of months.

Staud + Bean Shearling Bag

Staud's staple Bean Bag is now available in a fuzzy shearling texture. Sign me up.

Staud + Ivy Dress

The side cutout game is strong with this black style.

Lauren Adhav is a freelance fashion editor based in Los Angeles. Originally from Orlando, Florida, she always wanted to work at a fashion magazine. After finally getting an internship at Town & Country in 2015, she moved to New York City and continued to get her footing in the industry with stints at Cosmopolitan , W magazine, Harper's Bazaar , and Moda Operandi. In 2017, she returned to Cosmo full time, starting off as the beauty and fashion editorial assistant and working her way to fashion editor. She contributed to both the website and print issues, pitching new ideas, forecasting trends, covering red carpet events, and informing the overall coverage and brand voice. After five years in NYC, she moved to the West Coast for the sunshine and the change of pace. As a freelance fashion editor, she still contributes to Cosmo and now Who What Wear. She's always trying to get ahead of the next big trend before it goes mainstream and loves discovering fashion brands with a unique point of view (Chopova Lowena, Sandy Liang, and Bode being some of her current favorites). She also spends an unhealthy amount of time online shopping for the perfect piece, and now that she's in L.A., she's rediscovering her soft spot for malls. On the weekends, you can find her walking around the Silver Lake Reservoir, trying to catch up on her tan at Venice Beach, and probably ordering a Chinese chicken salad at Joan's on Third.

I Was a Fashion Buyer for 15 Years — Here's Where to Get Summer's Comfiest Travel Clothes Starting at $23

Build the perfect travel wardrobe with these expert-approved dresses, sandals, and more.

travel clothes fall 2022

Travel + Leisure / Reese Herrington

If you’re like a majority of Americans, you’re probably planning a summer vacation to maximize the good weather and your PTO days. Whether you’re taking a weekend trip or a getaway abroad , you’ll need a travel wardrobe to match your destination. Luckily, this former fashion buyer is here to help you find the summer's biggest travel clothes trends.

Full disclosure: before I became a travel writer, I was a fashion buyer in Manhattan for 15 years, working with some of the most established brands in the industry, and I fell in love with working with fabrics, trims, and silhouettes to bring an idea from conceptualization to the final product. Today, I use my prior merchandising experience and keen eye for fashion to create chic travel outfits to pack for both work assignments and vacations.

Though I'm a minimalist packer who prioritizes dressing for comfort, my suitcase isn't completely devoid of the season's trends and fads. In fact, several of them can help you look en vogue without sacrificing comfort (and they're sure to last long after the season is over). Below, are the 14 travel clothes trends you’ll want packed for each of your upcoming vacations, and they're starting at $23.

Two-piece Matching Sets

Matching sets are still going strong this year. I especially love them when traveling because they’re great as mix-and-match pieces that maximize your outfit potential. I highly recommend this set by Amazon-loved brand Fixmatti because of its comfortable, light linen fabric, which is ideal for warm weather.

The top can be worn with leggings, denim shorts, and a bathing suit as a beach cover-up. The shorts, on the other hand, have an elastic waistband, which offers casual comfort that goes well with your favorite T-shirts and sweaters. I know I’ll be living in this set during the summer (and I have my eye on the glacial blue and apricot versions), so don’t wait to snap up yours today; it’s available in 17 colors and sizes range from S to XL.

Square Necklines

Anything with a square neckline is a wardrobe essential because it flatters a variety of body shapes and elevates classic clothing silhouettes. Plus, they can be dressed up or down depending on your itinerary. My favorite iteration of the trend is Halara's Breezful Slip Dress , which has a four-way stretch fabric and offers breathability and sweat-wicking properties, which are beneficial when traveling. Also in the running is the Square Neck Maxi Dress from Amazon-favorite brand Potany.

Slingback Sandals

Aerothotic’s Aura slingbacks are my reliable go-to sandals, whether at home or globetrotting. These fashionable sandals also provide all-day comfort with their orthopedic insoles, which deliver superior, long-lasting support for your arches. They slide on easily and are water- and sweat-resistant, making them ideal for the beach, a day of hiking, and a leisurely stroll around a new city. You can choose from 14 colors, and at this price point, you’ll want to pick up a couple of colors to pair back with multiple outfits.

Wide-leg Linen Pants

Summer and linen go hand in hand, but the resurgence of the wide-leg pants trend is taking the classic fabric to a new level. Whether you're eyeing Petal & Pup's Hawthorne pants or Amazon's top-selling version , these winning wide-leg crops are made with soft linen and offer a flattering smoked waist. They’re great for lounging poolside, and they also make excellent travel pants for road trips, long flights, and so on. The functional side pockets add a pragmatic touch; they’re great for holding keys, lip gloss, or cash. I like wearing these with Adanola’s short-sleeve zip top for a clean, minimalistic look, but anything that you pair them with will work.

Bohemian Florals

Florals are no-brainers for warm-weather destinations, especially when featured on a stunning maxi dress like this one from Alicia Bell ; it's made with cotton and silk, creating a lightweight option for hot summer days. The flutter sleeves, which add a romantic touch, along with the tassel and bead detailing, offer a contemporary, Bohemian look. Casually elegant, it works for daytime picnics and fun dinners. You can even use it as a beach cover-up. It has a removable sash and is partially lined so you don’t need to layer a slip underneath. I also love this affordable version from PrettyGarden , which is a steal at $47.

Leather Sneakers

Everlane shoes are always at the top of my packing list for their long-lasting comfort, and the brand's Day Sneakers are no exception. It’s such a classic shoe to have in your closet because it goes with almost everything. It’s also great for days when you’re sightseeing and doing lots of walking. The thick rubber outsoles, which feature recycled rubber, provide lots of support for your arches. As a matter of fact, shoppers compared them to wearing slippers; one wrote, “My feet are so happy. My first day wearing them, I walked close to 5 miles and didn’t have a single issue.” They’re offered in four colors and sizes range from 5 to 11.

Sleek Jumpsuits

Since I’m a huge fan of the Spanx washable Carefree Crepe capsule collection for refined travel suiting, I had to try the brand's AirEssentials Jumpsuit when it first came out. I love it for its versatility and packability. Made with a fine-knit blend that delivers generous four-way stretch, this flattering item is perfect for a day of adventuring or a night of dinner and drinks. The soft, drapey material is figure-flattering and keeps you cool on hot days, but can be dressed up with the right shoes and a cropped blazer when needed. It’s available in three colors, from XS to 3XL, and three inseams (regular, petite, and tall). On a budget? Then check out this version at Amazon , which is $37 and comes in 14 colors.

Nautical Stripes

Nautical-striped tops add elegance and pop to any outfit, so they’re definitely on the packing list for my 2024 trips. This one is especially nice because it’s short-sleeved and lightweight in addition to being soft and breathable. Plus, you can style this with a pair of cut-off denim shorts, a pair of khakis, or even a skirt. I'm also a fan of this sweater tee , which is also available at Amazon; I love the classic navy colorway while the beige comes in at a close second. Neutral colors are my favorite because they’re so versatile and always match everything.

Tiered Midi Dresses

Looking for a dress to stay cool and look chic on hot summer days? Look no further because this Zesica dress is so comfortable and on-trend. The smocked waist and flutter sleeves offer feminine details while ensuring a flattering silhouette without feeling restrictive. I also like that it has two side pockets, which makes it a practical dress to wear on vacations. And, it's available in 28 colors to suit any wardrobe or itinerary.

Oversized Tote Bags

Although my favorite everyday tote is Everlane's Luxe Medium Italian Leather Tote , I also like this generous-sized one from Bagsmart for traveling. It’s incredibly practical because it holds a lot and even doubles as a personal item when flying. Made with lightweight quilted nylon, the bag's interior features a padded pocket that fits a 15.6-inch laptop, a spacious main compartment, and two side pockets. There are also side straps that will hold a yoga mat as well, so it also makes a great gym bag. It’s available in seven colors, but my favorite is black because it’s just so sleek.

Crescent Crossbody Bags

Don't be surprised if you see travelers carrying crescent bags this summer. Instead, join them by adding ones like the buckled Sunlight Leaves and dual-toned Bostanten , both available at Amazon, to your cart. I have the Strathberry Crescent Satchel Bag in my rotation, and I adore it for visiting big cities because it’s super sleek and can hold quite a lot of items; I can fit my iPhone, wallet, makeup bag, and a small notebook. The interior pocket is great for organizing small things like receipts and airline or concert tickets.

Slip Skirts

This slip skirt from Everlane is the ultimate summer staple. It comes in two colors and features an A-line silhouette with a center front peek-a-boo slit. The subtle jacquard stripe lends a novelty statement without being over the top, allowing it to pair with both solid and printed tops. Made with FSC-certified viscose and recycled polyester, it’s breathable and resistant to wrinkles, making it the ideal travel piece.

Aday carries some of my favorite travel apparel; I absolutely love the brand's Turn It Up Pants and Like A Boss Pullover for work trips because they are both wrinkle-free and pill-resistant. So, of course, I love the That's A Wrap Top, which checks all the boxes for trekking. What's more, this comfortable wrinkle-free top can be worn five different ways, so it’s a winning travel essential no matter what season it is. You can catch me wearing it with a cute pair of high-rise shorts like these from Carve Designs , but it also works well as a cute shrug.

Athleisure Jackets

Contrary to popular opinion, jackets are summer-appropriate, especially if you're traveling somewhere chilly (or like to hit the trails or city streets early before the sun's at its peak). That's why I always have a lightweight athleisure-style jacket like Aritzia's Golden Canyon Jacket on my packing list. But, if you want hue options, then the Lululemon Always Effortless Jacke t needs to be on your radar. Available in seven colors, the water-repellant jacket is functional, packable, and stylish. It's stowable hood, soft lining, pockets, airflow panel, and cinchable hem also seal the deal.

Each piece of luggage is evaluated by experts in the Lab as well as consumer testers on the go. In the Lab, we look at factors like durability, ease of use and more. We also pack each suitcase with a standard load to see how much it can hold and how easy the compartments are to access. Consumer testers come into the Lab to use the luggage in an obstacle course, where they weigh in on handle comfort, wheel performance, maneuverability and more. Finally, we send luggage out with travelers into the real world for firsthand feedback.

You can learn more about how we test luggage and what to consider as you shop — including how to decide between hardside and softside luggage — but first, here's everything you need to know about our top-tested luggage brands.

Samsonite earns our top spot for the best luggage brand because it has a wide assortment for every preference — from business travelers to vacationers — and has continuously proven to be high quality as we've tested it over the years.

In particular, it stands out for its durability and ease-of-use features: There's been no struggling to open and close the cases, and packing them has been a breeze , thanks to the functional compartments that maximize space. It's certainly not inexpensive, but as direct-to-consumer luggage brand prices have skyrocketed, Samsonite's have remained fairly consistent.

Both hardside and softside styles from the brand have excelled in our tests. We've also been impressed by each of the sizes, including carry-ons, checked bags and underseat luggage. Some of our favorite models include the Freeform hardside (pictured here), the Solyte DLX softside and the Stryde Glyder , which is a checked case that's wide instead of tall so it's less likely to tip over.

If you're on a budget or you don’t use luggage regularly — i.e., it doesn’t need to be the most durable and you don’t need all the bells and whistles — American Tourister offers competitive pricing and an excellent variety to choose from . There are a lot of options if you prefer bright colors and fun prints, plus there are cases for the entire family, including a Disney collection . Between the designs and versatile offerings, the models are fun, functional and especially ideal for vacationers.

Just note that while luxury hardside cases are usually made of polycarbonate, American Tourister typically uses ABS plastic, which is more affordable but more prone to scratches. Still, it gets high ratings from online reviewers who note that the bags are surprisingly spacious. Another perk: The brand offers luggage sets for an even better value, especially if you need to purchase multiple pieces. Pictured here is the Pop Max Softside set , which at $150 for a set of three, is less than other single cases.

Away is one of the most popular luggage brands on the market, and our testing shows it actually lives up to its hype. Though the brand has a wide range of offerings, we especially love the hardside carry-on.

It's made of 100% polycarbonate that proved to be durable and lightweight in our evaluations — even lighter than some fabric bags we’ve tested. It was also surprisingly spacious and held a full packing load in our review. The company offers a 100-day return policy on unused items; it also offers a lifetime limited warranty on its suitcases that covers any "functional damage."

Besides the main Carry-On model , it comes in variations like a Bigger Carry-On (which the brand says can hold 20% more) and a Carry-On Flex (which has an expandable zipper). We also love the brand's Everywhere Bag , which is a stylish and surprisingly spacious weekender.

Briggs & Riley

Briggs & Riley bags are pricey — a carry-on can cost over $600 — but they come with a lifetime guarantee that will cover all repairs if the luggage ever gets broken or damaged. They also come with innovative features, such as the brand's signature compression packing system. Bags that have this feature expand to let you pack and then compress down after they're filled. In fact, one of our testers said she packed a week's worth of summer clothes for two people into a compact carry-on, and it easily fit into an airline's overhead bin.

The suitcases also use top-notch construction and timeless designs in a range of styles, including hardside, softside, carry-ons and checked bags. The Baseline Global Carry-On Spinner (pictured here in the 21-inch version) has been a selected as GH Family Travel Award winner for the past two years after travel testers gave it perfect scores across the board. Its nylon fabric also aced our Lab's abrasion tests.

It’s hard to find good luggage for under $100, but Amazon’s luggage does not disappoint. There are softside and hardside styles to choose from, plus garment bags , duffels and more. Amazon also boasts extensive testing to make sure their products will hold up, and though the luggage might not the absolute best quality out there, the price can’t be beat.

We were impressed with its hardside 20-inch spinner carry-on (pictured here) when we tested it on our Lab. Our analysts found it to be exceptionally easy to pack, though the ABS material wasn't as scratch-resistant as other models in our tests. Still, consumer testers liked the maneuverability and wheel performance. This style also comes in two other sizes (24 and 28 inches) and can be purchased as a two- or three-piece set.

This luxury brand is on the pricey side but has timeless designs — from hardside to tweed fabric — that never go out of style. In fact, the brand’s marketing and aesthetics are focused heavily on its heritage. It has been a top performer in our tests, thanks to its spacious interior that's easy to pack and its wheels and handles that make it smooth and comfortable to maneuver.

The hardside cases have earned high scores in our tests — especially standing out for being scratch-resistant, lightweight and spacious — but we also love the softside Legend collection (pictured here), which is made of durable tweed fabric and leather trim.

This fashionable yet functional travel brand was founded by actress Shay Mitchell and incorporates smart features designed to make traveling easier. It also has a stunning aesthetic, including monochromatic color schemes in which the handles and hardware match the case.

Pictured here is the Carry-On Roller, its best-selling case that comes in a range of neutral and fun hues. It was spacious for packing and easy to maneuver in our tests, and though it did scuff during use, it resisted dents well during our Lab's drop tests. Another popular style is its Mini Weekender , which can be used as a personal item that fits underneath the airplane seat in front of you.

READ OUR FULL REVIEW: Experts Weigh In on Buzzy Travel Brand Béis

a photo of the beis carry on luggage and beis weekender bag

The Béis carry-on and compact weekender bag being used as a travel set.

This company was founded by a pilot, and it makes luggage specifically for airline personnel who travel for a living. Still, it's just as functional for business and leisure travelers.

The brand primarily sells softside luggage, though it does have some hardside options available. There’s excellent attention to detail that makes frequent flying easier, like cushioning around the handles for comfort, self-aligning wheels that let you roll the luggage in any direction and abrasion-resistant nylon fabric.

The Platinum Elite softside luggage (pictured here) stood out in our Lab tests. Not only was it durable, but it was also spacious enough to hold our entire load with room to spare. The downside was that it was heavier than others, but it's a fair tradeoff for the top-of-the-line features.

This brand increases the fun factor and makes it easier to spot your luggage in a sea of solid colors. There are adorable animal sets for kids' luggage , animal prints for adults and more. There are also options for licensed teams and art (like Britto, shown here), making your suitcase a playful yet functional accessory.

When it comes to materials, most Heys suitcases are hardside and made of polycarbonate and ABS composite. This means it's mostly ABS plastic but has a polycarbonate coating on the outside for added protection. The brand wasn't the most durable in our tests, it but earned high ease-of-use scores.

Style is certainly important when it comes to luggage — it's an accessory, after all — but you don't want to sacrifice quality and functionality. Calpak's cases are both well-made and have unique designs. Though its assortment is tailored with fewer models than some of the big brands, Calpak still has a wide range of materials to choose from, including sleek hardside polycarbonate, printed ABS/polycarbonate blends and ripstop polyester.

Calpak's Ambeur carry-on (pictured here) was one of our testers' favorites; they especially loved the easy-to-use telescopic handle and metallic color. We also found it to be easy to pack and though it wasn't as scratch-resistant as some others we tested (which is expected for ABS composites), it still withstood dents and damage from our durability drop test.

Tumi

Rolling TUMI luggage through the airport is like a status symbol; the brand is highly recognized for its upscale products for both business and leisure travelers.

In addition to its suitcases , it makes accessories like briefcases and backpacks and has components that make traveling easier, like an anti-slip strap on carrying bags and an extra hook on rolling bags so you can wheel multiple items at once. On top of that, the brand stands out for its unique service offerings, like repairs and luggage registration to help you find lost bags.

We especially love Tumi's Alpha collection (pictured here is the Alpha carry-on ) with its durable materials and removable garment sleeve. One GH analyst who has been using a backpack in this collection appreciates that it fits more than you'd expect and has a versatile design for travel, work and beyond.

L.L.Bean

If you’re going away for weeks or just have lots to pack, L.L.Bean’s duffels are roomy enough to stuff in everything you need. There are options with or without wheels and lots of sizes to choose from (the Adventure Rolling Duffel , shown here, is incredibly durable and one of our go-to picks for vacations with kids).

The flexible shape of the duffel also allows it to store easily under your bed, so it’s perfect for college students or anyone tight on storage space. It’s also made of sturdy, water-resistant nylon fabric that's made to last no matter where your travels take you — in fact, one of our experts says it's lasted for years without signs of wear. She does note that it's a little more cumbersome to pull than four-wheel spinner luggage and it's spaciousness makes it easy to go over the 50-pound weight limit for airlines, but says it's perfect for packing for two kids.

Monos

Monos says its design philosophy is "less is more," — meaning the bags are made to be simple and timeless to avoid passing trends and high quality so they can stand the test of time. Most of its hardside bags are entirely polycarbonate, though some combine polycarbonate and aluminum for increased durability. They also have useful packing features like wide compression straps to help you fit more in the case.

The Check-In Large was a winner of last year's GH Family Travel Awards because of its spacious interior and maneuverability. Testers said it was easy to roll and they loved the sleek appearance. It's also worth noting that the brand has a 100-day return period so you can get a refund if it's not a good fit.

Eagle Creek

Eagle Creek

Whether you’re backpacking internationally or exploring a national park, Eagle Creek gives you both the convenience and durability you need in a bag. Some have various compartments so you can stay organized (or store shoes and dirty laundry separately), and some bags have backpack straps if you need to be hands-free.

We especially love the Cargo Hauler Duffel for shorter trips: It’s affordable, spacious, lightweight and folds up into a small pouch for easy storage. For longer getaways, the Migrate Wheeled Duffel (pictured here) is larger and has two wheels with a telescopic handle. It also opens wide so you can easily access the contents.

Best places to see fall colors in the US

It’s a universal truth: the turning of the fall foliage is one of the world’s most enchanting natural phenomena, and in the US, it comes in many different iterations.

You can drive beneath the amber canopies of New England, watch fiery maples take over the vistas of the northern midwest, or marvel at the golden aspens as they contrast against the rocky peaks of the west.

All that said, determining peak leaf peeping season isn’t an exact science – color windows vary across the country due to weather patterns, elevation, and sometimes just pure chance. Luckily for you, we’ve pulled together a list of our favorite fall destinations and tips on when to catch the colors at their brightest.

Fall Foliage and the Stowe Community Church, Stowe, Vermont, USA

1. Stowe, Vermont

Perhaps the most famous US destination for autumn lovers, Stowe delivers on all counts: spectacular palettes of reds, oranges and yellows; tons of mountain roads and hikes; and access to the highest points in Vermont’s photogenic Green Mountains. Rent a cabin or pitch a tent among some of New England’s most gorgeous forests and enjoy the scenery this region is renowned for.

Stowe’s fall foliage season generally lasts from early September through late October, with colors peaking in the middle of that period. Use Stowe’s Foliage Finder to follow the color progression on the area’s various scenic drives.

Man stood on the edge of a large rock overlooking the scenic Shenandoah National Park in fall colours

2. Shenandoah National Park, Virginia

This expansive park encompasses nearly 100 miles of central Appalachian views, making it one of the most accessible – and scenic – fall destinations in the eastern US. Drive along the famous Skyline Drive for breathtaking autumnal vistas or take to the trails to wander beneath Virginia’s beautiful deciduous forests as they don their most exuberant colors.

Shenandoah’s fall colors generally begin to emerge in October, peaking midway through the end of the month. The park posts weekly updates on the color changes to their social media accounts, but if you’re looking for a more robust tracker ahead of time, check out the Virginia Department of Forestry’s fall foliage reports .

3. Columbia River Gorge, Oregon

Imagine a large, mirror-like river buttressed by misty mountains and forested shores, all graced with explosions of gold and orange – a scene worthy of a painting. Happily, this place is real and it exists at the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area in Oregon , one of the best leaf-peeping destinations on the west coast.

Marvel at the intermingling of evergreen forests with alders and maples, all against a mountainous backdrop. Fall colors in this region of Oregon reach their zenith in late October.

4. Zion National Park Utah

If you visit Zion in the fall, you’ll see a scene you likely won’t see anywhere else on earth: vermillion maples and yellow cottonwoods accenting the striking red rock desert. The park’s deciduous forests hug the creeks and rivers, and routes like the Emerald Pools Trail offer immersive journeys through Zion’s autumnal wonders.

Zion’s color-changing process varies depending on elevation in the park – higher elevations peak in mid-October, while lower elevations hold on to their colorful foliage as long as the middle of November.

5. Tennessee/North Carolina state line

The Tennessee / North Carolina state line is a marvelous region to visit year round, but it takes on a special charm in the fall, when the ubiquitous mountain forests shed their trademark green for a warmer set of hues. Hike through the enchanting Pisgah and Cherokee National Forests, get a birds-eye-view of golden valley floors at Roan Mountain, or dig deep into the beauty of southern Appalachia at Great Smoky Mountains National Park .

Like its western counterparts, Southern Appalachia’s fall colors are elevation dependent. The region’s higher reaches develop colors in early and mid-October, while lower elevations reach their color peaks in late October and early November.

6. West Virginia

Perhaps one of the country’s most unsung – but most beautiful – destinations, West Virginia is a foliage fan’s dream. Covered in forests that wrap across the state’s undulating terrain, West Virginia offers an alternative leaf peeping experience that rivals some of the country’s most famous leaf peeping destinations. Watch the colors collide with the waterfalls and craggy peaks of the Potomac Highlands, take in views of crimson and tangerine tree tops along one of the continents oldest rivers (ironically named the New River), or hike into the multi-hued hollows of the Hatfield McCoy Mountains.

Leaves begin changing in late September, with peak colors appearing in mid-October; West Virginia tourism manages a live leaf map throughout the fall, so you can see the changes as they happen.

7. Northwestern Wyoming

Wyoming’s mountainous west knows how to deliver drama, and the region takes things up a notch in the fall. Aspens, cottonwoods, willows, and black hawthorns drape the landscape in color, a striking foreground to the imposing Tetons and the winding Snake River. Yellowstone gets in the spirit, too, and don’t miss the opportunity to immerse yourself in the area’s national forests. If you’re lucky, you may even get a light dusting of snow, which really sets the fall colors off.

Colors peak in the Wyoming mountains from late September to early October, with colors changing earlier at higher elevations.

8. Wisconsin Northwoods

Home to sprawling boreal forests and glacial lakes, the Wisconsin Northoods immerse visitors in true autumn glory. Take a scenic drive through the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, fish for trophy musky beneath the multihued canopy, or visit one of the region’s small communities for fall festivals.

The fall foliage in northern Wisconsin begins its transformation in September, with colors maxing out in early October. Follow Travel Wisconsin’s fall color reports for live updates.

9. Northern Nevada

Nevada may be well known for its deserts, but its mountainous north provides an oasis of fall foliage that just may surprise you. Head to Lamoille Canyon in the Ruby Mountains to see golden treetops wrap around the region’s rocky peaks, and if you’re feeling adventurous, don a backpack and immerse yourself in nature on the Ruby Crest Trail.

Fall colors emerge in mountainous Northern Nevada in October, usually reaching their most colorful state at the end of the month.

10. Ozark Highlands Scenic Byway, Arkansas

This 35-mile route crosses the Boston Mountain Range of the Ozarks in Arkansas , taking you through two national forests (Ozark and Ouachita), across the 165-mile Ozark Highlands Trail, and up to Buffalo National River, the country’s first. A joyous network of twists and turns through the state’s most lush countryside, this byway delivers autumn foliage in high definition.

Like other destinations in this part of the country, the Ozarks start seeing fall colors in late September or early October, with things peaking in late October and early November.

The Best Clothing Steamers

Jackie Reeve

By Jackie Reeve and Zoe Vanderweide

A good clothing steamer can have your garments looking polished and wrinkle-free in mere minutes. It’s often a more appealing option than pulling out the iron, and because a steamer smooths without scorching, it’s a better tool for delicate fabrics like silk and wool.

We’ve tested dozens of steamers since 2016, and our current favorite for regular home use is the Conair Turbo ExtremeSteam Garment Steamer . Its powerful blasts of steam, comfortable grip, and smart features make it the one we grab over and over. We also recommend an inexpensive compact steamer that’s ideally suited for travel, plus a heavy-duty steamer with a larger water tank for folks who frequently tackle bigger jobs.

Everything we recommend

Conair Turbo ExtremeSteam Garment Steamer (GS38R)

A powerful steamer with clever features.

This steamer melted wrinkles without spitting water on our fabrics—rare among the models we tested. It’s also comfortable to hold and has standout features, like an aluminum steamer plate and dual steam settings.

Conair CompleteSteam Hand Held Fabric Steamer (GS2X)

For occasional use.

This small, inexpensive steamer is best suited for travel and occasional home use. It does leave some wet spots on fabrics, but it’s better built and more efficient than the other portable steamers we tried.

Reliable Vivio 500 GC Professional Garment Steamer

For marathon steaming sessions.

For serious steamers, this pricey, supersized floor-standing model will make getting the job done a lot more pleasant. Its steam head is the comfiest to use for extended periods, and it holds the most water—just be careful when rolling it across the floor with a full tank, because it can splash.

Like most of the midsize handheld steamers we tested, the Conair Turbo ExtremeSteam Garment Steamer (GS38R) produced ample steam for the job, and it was easier to hold and more thoughtfully designed than the competition. It was also one of the only handheld steamers that didn’t leave wet spots on test fabrics. The Conair Turbo steamer weighs just under 2.75 pounds with a full water tank (other midsize steamers we tested weighed between 2.5 and 5 pounds), making it among the lightest and most comfortable to maneuver. The heat-up aluminum steamer plate glides over fabric, helping to smooth wrinkles nearly as effectively as a traditional iron. It also comes with several accessories, including a silicone band attachment for pulling fabrics taut, a mesh bonnet for protecting extra-delicate items, and a bristle brush for loosening fibers to allow for better steam penetration. Plus, with two settings, the Conair Turbo steamer was one of the only models we tested that allowed us to control the heat and force of the steam: We used the “steam” setting for smoothing delicate silks, while the more powerful “turbo” setting was effective for tackling heavier cotton shirts. It has a one-year limited warranty.

If you want a steamer on hand to occasionally freshen up a garment, or to pack in your suitcase, you probably don’t need anything fancier than the Conair CompleteSteam Hand Held Fabric Steamer (GS2X) . It’s around half the price of the Conair Turbo ExtremeSteam Garment Steamer , and it was more effective at smoothing wrinkles than any other steamer we tried in its price range (most of which were junky). It was also one of the only steamers of this size (often called “portable” or “travel” steamers) we tested that didn’t pour water out of the spout when tipped over. It has a relatively small water tank (5 ounces; the portables we tried ranged from 5 to 8 ounces), and it did spit some water when in use, but it left fewer wet spots on clothes than the other portables we tried. If you think you’ll use a steamer regularly, invest in the well-made Conair Turbo ExtremeSteam, but if you just need to smooth a wrinkle now and then—at home or while traveling—the Conair CompleteSteam fabric steamer is a solid choice. It has a one-year limited warranty, which is typical for small, inexpensive steamers.

If you do a lot of steaming, or if you find handheld steamers too heavy or uncomfortable, the Reliable Vivio 500 GC Professional Garment Steamer is a pleasure to use, and it may be worth the (considerable) investment. It’s nearly 6 feet tall, with a base about the size of a canister vacuum; despite its cumbersome size, it was our favorite steamer to use in testing. The tank holds a gallon of water (the most of any steamer we tried), it heats up quickly, and its steam head was much more comfortable for extended use than the handheld steamers that we tested. Be careful rolling the Vivio across the floor when the tank is full—it can splash water. This steamer comes with a three-year limited warranty, which was average for the ones we tested.

The research

Our favorite steamer: conair turbo extremesteam garment steamer, a budget pick for occasional use: conair completesteam hand held fabric steamer (gs2x), an upgrade pick for steaming marathons: reliable vivio 500 gc professional garment steamer, why you should trust us, who this is for, how we picked and tested, the competition.

Our pick for best clothes steamer overall, the Conair Turbo ExtremeSteam Garment Steamer (GS54), in dark blue.

They say the devil is in the details, but with the Conair Turbo ExtremeSteam Garment Steamer , the details were downright heavenly. The Conair Turbo steamer checked every box on our list: It was effective at vanquishing wrinkles, didn’t leave wet spots on test fabrics, and felt comfortable to hold. It heated up in under a minute and provided more than 15 minutes of continuous steam, and we found its long, 10-foot cord convenient. But the smart details—like the aluminum-quilted steam plate and the two steam settings—pushed the Conair Turbo steamer above its competitors to make steaming an enjoyable chore.

The bursts of steam from the Conair Turbo steamer smoothed out a silk dress in seconds and a rumpled cotton pillowcase in under a minute. Several steamers we’ve considered have multiple holes for the steam to escape, but the Conair Turbo has a thin, long slit, which results in a more targeted sheet of steam. It took more wrinkles out of crumpled button-down shirts than the other handheld steamers we tested (although the most stubborn wrinkles, on the sleeves and the bottom hems, still needed an iron). Also, many steamers we tested spit droplets of water along with the steam, leaving wet marks on test fabrics. The Conair Turbo steamer didn’t; out of eight handheld steamers we tried, only the Conair Turbo and the (now discontinued) Sunbeam Power Steam Fabric Steamer left clothes completely dry.

Handheld (aka midsize) steamers can be uncomfortable to use after a few minutes—of the three steamer types we tested, they were the heaviest to hold. The Conair Turbo is among the lightest and most comfortable handheld models, for both vertical and horizontal use. It weighs about 2.75 pounds with a full tank (the handhelds we tested ranged from 2.5 to 5 pounds), so while it can still feel heavy after prolonged use, it’s lighter than most in its category. It wasn’t as comfortable to use as the floor-standing Reliable Vivio 500 GC Professional Garment Steamer , but it’s about a quarter of the price and far, far easier to store.

Its 7.3-ounce water tank is one of the smaller water tanks among our handheld test group. Nevertheless, in testing it produced more than 15 minutes of continuous steam, and we were able to smooth a dress, a jacket, a pair of slacks, and three heavily wrinkled cotton button-downs with water left to spare. The Conair Turbo steamer’s water tank is also easy to remove and replace—simply slide up the release switch to unlock the tank, then click it back into place—which is handy if you do need to refill it in the middle of a big job. And it stands up on its own, meaning it can be filled while resting on the counter.

A side view of the Conair Turbo Garment Steamer, being held up in the air by a person's hand.

The Conair Turbo steamer has a heat-up aluminum head that glides smoothly and helps to push steam into the fabric’s fibers (similar to what an iron does). This feature was enormously helpful for unwrinkling heavier fabrics, especially when used horizontally against a flat surface. It also comes with three snap-on attachments: a bristle brush to ensure steam penetrates fibers for a perfect press, a silicone bar for pulling fabrics taut, and a mesh bonnet to protect your most delicate textiles. But for quickly removing heavy wrinkles, this steamer performs best all on its own. The Conair Turbo steamer also gave us more control over the amount of steam than most other handheld steamers, with two settings: “steam,” for freshening up lighter items, and “turbo,” for blasting the wrinkles out of weightier fabrics.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

The relatively small water tank makes the Conair Turbo steamer weigh less than the competition when full, but it also means you’ll need to refill it if you’re doing a lot of steaming. And because of the tank’s small opening, it was challenging to fill from a gallon-jug of distilled water. (This is pretty common with handheld steamers, and can be easily remedied by using a funnel.) Plus, the small opening means it takes a long time for the tank to dry fully after use. Finally, we found the built-in creaser tool fiddly and awkward to use. If you want to make sharp pleats, use an iron.

Our pick for best clothes steamer in a smaller size, the Conair Complete Steam Hand Held Fabric Steamer (GS2).

Portable (aka travel-size) steamers are not the most impressive examples of modern engineering—most of them leak, and they’re not that powerful—but the Conair CompleteSteam Hand Held Fabric Steamer (GS2X) is the best one we’ve found, and it even outperformed some bigger, pricier models. If you need to use a steamer only occasionally, for an outfit or for a trip, the small CompleteSteam is effective, affordable, and lightweight.

In our testing the Conair CompleteSteam not only beat all of the cheap portable steamers, it also was easier to fill and left fewer wet marks on clothes than midsize handhelds from Rowenta and Black+Decker . The Conair CompleteSteam didn’t produce as much steam as our main pick, the Conair Turbo ExtremeSteam, so it needed more passes over the fabric to flatten wrinkles, and it wasn’t as effective on tough creases—but it’s also less than half the price. The Conair CompleteSteam is just right for light jobs and travel, and it’s more comfortable to use than a heavier midsized steamer if you don’t have much to steam. It did leave some water spots when used too close to fabrics. But the CompleteSteam can also be used horizontally (not a given in this category); it dribbled only a few droplets, which was a win compared with others that poured water everywhere.

A side view of the Conair CompleteSteam’s Hand Held Fabric Steamer being held up by a person's hand.

The Conair CompleteSteam (like most of the five portable steamers we tried) looks like a small watering can, and it weighs about 2.5 pounds when full. It was the heaviest of the portable steamers we tested, yet it has one of the smallest water tanks. Empty it’s just over 2 pounds, and the tank holds 5 ounces of water. By comparison, the Hilife Steamer weighs 1.5 pounds when empty and has an 8-ounce water tank. You can steam two, maybe three, outfits with the Conair CompleteSteam before you’ll need to refill.

Conair’s one-year warranty is comparable to those of most of the other inexpensive portable steamers we considered. The price and quality of portable steamers indicate to us that these are not meant to last forever.

Our pick for best clothes steamer for long sessions of steaming, the Reliable Vivio 500GC Professional Garment Steamer.

If you have a lot of steaming to do (like helping a wedding party get dressed or tackling a mountain of laundry), if you prefer to steam clothes spread out on a table or bed instead of hanging upright, or if you don’t find heavy handheld steamers comfortable to use, the floor-standing Reliable Vivio 500 GC Professional Garment Steamer is a solid alternative that left its four competitors in the dust. A flexible hose makes this steamer the most comfortable of our picks to use. It releases a steady, effective flow of steam; it’s smartly designed; and its 1-gallon tank was still steaming long after we ran out of fabric to smooth. It does, however, cost nearly four times as much as the Conair Turbo ExtremeSteam .

For big jobs, the handheld Conair Turbo steamer will build up your biceps but test your patience; the Reliable Vivio, on the other hand, has a lightweight hose (like all floor-standing steamers) that was more flexible than others we tried and easier to glide across fabrics. (It’s like using a vacuum-cleaner hose.) This also made the Reliable steamer the best of our picks for steaming horizontally, if that’s what you prefer. It was as effective as other full-size steamers at smoothing wrinkles (and also similar to the handheld Conair Turbo in this regard), but it was the only one that didn’t spit any water.

All floor-standing steamers have an attached pole to hold the steamer head and a garment. The Reliable Vivio comes with its own hanger, which keeps your clothes steadier while you steam than models like the PurSteam and the Jiffy , neither of which included one. The Reliable Vivio’s design sets it apart, but it did require more setup than other floor-standing steamers we tested—we had to get out a screwdriver. Another standing steamer we tried, the Pure Enrichment Pure Steam , also came with a snap-on hanger, but it was harder to move around (an important consideration when you’re trying to steam the front and back of a shirt).

A close-up of a person's hand holding the steam head of the Reliable Vivio (with a removable brush attachment on).

Like those of all floor-standing steamers we tried, the Reliable Vivio’s removable tank was easy to fill, with a screw-on cap and a wide opening that fit under a faucet. It held more water (a gallon) than any other steamer we tested, but it still heated up in about two minutes. You don’t have to empty the tank after each use, so once it’s set up, it’s a breeze to wheel out and start using. The Reliable Vivio’s wheels were better on hardwood floors than those of any other full-size steamer we tried, but be careful when storing the steamer or moving it around. If the base tips backward, some water will dribble out of the tank. Leaking is a common issue, and this wasn’t the worst offender during testing. It comes with a three-year limited warranty.

Wirecutter senior staff writer Jackie Reeve has spent the majority of her waking life working with textiles, and that means dealing with wrinkles. She has written our guides to cotton sheets , flannel sheets , bed blankets , throw blankets , pajamas , robes , bath towels , and duvet covers , among others. In the course of doing the research for those pieces, she has done so much laundry that she must hold the company record by now. Jackie also wrote our guides to irons and ironing boards . For this guide she also built on the research of Camille Perri and Tim Heffernan.

Zoe Vanderweide is a Wirecutter senior staff writer covering style, so she’s constantly wearing, washing, styling and generally fussing over clothes. At any given time, she has between 30 and 40 garments in her testing queue to keep clean and wrinkle-free. In her off-hours, she’s also a type-A neatnik who considers a marathon garment-steaming session the ideal way to spend an evening in.

If you own a lot of delicate fabrics, or if you just need to freshen up the occasional piece of clothing or linen, a steamer will be a solid addition to your laundry arsenal, and it might even be a replacement for an iron . Over time, a steamer can also save you money normally spent at the dry cleaner. If you choose to hand-wash your delicate items at home ( we have guidelines on what can and can’t skip the dry cleaner ), a steamer can smooth out wrinkles and help everything look professionally cleaned and pressed. Steamers generally heat up in a couple of minutes, and the top ones we’ve tested melt away wrinkles with very little effort. They work best—and fastest—on thinner fabrics like silk and polyester, which you probably don’t want to iron anyway for fear of scorching them. Steamers are also a convenient way to smooth wrinkled curtains or drapes without having to take them down. We tested three basic types of steamers for this guide: midsize handheld models, which look like small dumbbells and are a good choice if you steam semi-regularly; small portable models (shaped like a pitcher), which hold a few ounces of water and are best for light use; and full-size, floor-standing models (similar in size to a vacuum cleaner), which have a rod to hang your garments on and the biggest tanks, so you can steam for long stretches without refilling.

Don’t rely on a steamer to create sharp pleats or creases, or to flatten seams. Some we tried came with special tools for that purpose, but they were time-consuming and fiddly, and they made us wonder why we hadn’t just gotten out the iron. In testing we also found that steamers were less effective than irons on stubborn folds and wrinkles, particularly on the hems of heavily creased shirts, jeans, and cotton sheets. If you wash and dry dress shirts—or any button-down shirts—at home, an iron is a better tool for keeping them crisp. A steamer can be helpful if you want to avoid storing a big ironing board in a small apartment, but that’s only realistic if your laundry isn’t that wrinkled. (We recommend options for small-space living in our ironing boards guide .)

We used these criteria to choose the best steamers:

Effective: The steamers with the strongest bursts of hot steam flattened wrinkles the fastest. We wanted to be able to steam an outfit in minutes and get out the door.

Non-leaking: A water stain can ruin a delicate, expensive fabric, and dribbling water can also be a safety hazard with a plugged-in appliance. We looked for steamers that didn’t drip, spit, or leak.

Big water tanks: The bigger the tank, the longer you can use your steamer before having to refill it. We looked at three different size categories and prioritized roomy water tanks for all of them.

Comfortable to use: Midsize handheld steamers can be especially top-heavy and awkward to hold. Since steaming involves a fair amount of arm lifting, we looked for steamers that were comfortable enough to use for several minutes at a time. We also favored steamers that could be used both vertically and horizontally, for people who are more comfortable using a steamer on a flat surface. And we looked for longer cords, which are helpful if you’re tall, or if your outlets aren’t in a convenient spot.

Protected by a warranty: Over the years, we’ve learned that irons and steamers can break easily. For one person, a steamer might last for years, and for someone else, the same model might conk out after two months. We considered only models with solid warranties, in case they give up the ghost too soon.

In addition to relying on our own deep knowledge of steamers (gained from a long history of testing them), we considered opinions from The Strategist and Good Housekeeping , and checked star ratings on Amazon, Bed Bath & Beyond, Target, and other retailers to compile a list of 28 candidates. We narrowed the list by reading user reviews from those same retailers, checking for things like customer service concerns and for reports of steamers that didn’t last long, and we looked at each steamer’s specifications—warranty, water-tank size, and useful features. We included well-reviewed steamers, favored brands that have proved to be reliable in the past, and covered household names that are easy to find. In the end, we decided to test 17 steamers in three categories: portable, handheld (aka midsize), and floor-standing.

We tried each steamer on a variety of items, including cotton sheets, button-down shirts, and silks, noting which models met the above criteria. We used them vertically (on clothes hung from hangers) and horizontally (spread out on an ironing board), and we measured the length of the steamers’ extension cords and the size of their water tanks.

This is not a comprehensive list of everything we tested in previous iterations of this guide, just what’s still available.

Handheld (aka midsize)

The   Beautural 1200-Watt Steamer for Clothes  smoothed wrinkles on thin silk but struggled with thicker cotton, and it spit some water onto fabrics.

The Black+Decker Advanced Handheld Steamer (HGS200) was a dud. We had to push the power button several times to get it to work, and it was the slowest steamer to heat up in our testing. Also, it didn’t produce much steam, and it made strange—even alarming—noises, so we unplugged it after just a few minutes. It did have the largest water tank (13.5 ounces) of any handheld we tried, though.

In past years, we’ve also tested and dismissed other handheld steamers, including the Jiffy Esteam Travel Steamer .

The Hilife Steamer for Clothes leaked water, couldn’t be used horizontally, and didn’t get very hot.

In previous years we also tested and dismissed a number of other portable steamers, including the Conair Travel Smart and the Pure Enrichment PureSteam Portable Fabric Steamer .

Floor-standing

Our former floor-standing pick, the J-2000 Jiffy Garment Steamer , has a simple design, and it emitted strong steam, but it was the worst offender in our testing when it came to water leaks from the tank. When we tried to roll the Jiffy’s stiff wheels across the floor, water poured out of the base, covering the cord and plug. We had to halt testing this steamer until it was dry enough to plug in, and it leaked again when we moved it after testing.

The Pure Enrichment Pure Steam XL Standing Steamer was the least expensive full-size steamer we tried. Although it has some nice details, overall you get what you pay for. It spit on our test fabrics, and it wasn’t as powerful as our Reliable Vivio 500 GC floor-standing pick. The clip-on hanger kept garments still, but it was fussy to unclip and turn around to steam the garment’s other side. Plus, it had the smallest water tank of the floor-standing group.

The PurSteam Full Size Garment Fabric Steamer has a dial to control the force of the steam. This is a nice (and rare) feature, but the steamer leaked on all the test fabrics. Also, the hose was stiff to use until the steam loosened it up after several minutes.

In previous years we tested and dismissed several other floor-standing steamers, including the Conair Ultimate Fabric Steamer (GS28) and the Steamfast SF-510 Fabric Steamer .

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.
