People-powered navigation: Making everyday drives smoother with the AmiGO app

travel app amigo

The best journeys are made together – and when you go with TomTom navigation apps, you go with the power of half a billion drivers. Read on to learn how the AmiGO app uses real-time community updates – plus online routing, live traffic info and speed camera alerts – to get people where they’re going faster and safer.

TomTom AmiGO is a free GPS navigation app designed to make day-to-day driving smooth and simple. It brings the best elements of TomTom navigation – trusted maps, traffic updates, speed camera alerts and arrival times – into one easy-to-use app.

AmiGO is powered and used by drivers all over the world: Our community works together to keep the app updated, sharing real-time info on traffic, speed cameras, closed roads and more – helping our entire community enjoy better journeys.

What’s more, AmiGO offers this all for free and without any ads, ever. Pretty good, right? Here’s how this small but mighty app makes it happen.

Locally sourced, real-time updates

When you use AmiGO, you get TomTom’s community of half a billion drivers as your navigation partners. Users can actively report to the community on traffic jams, speed camera locations, blocked and closed roads, accidents and more. TomTom analyzes and verifies this information to provide all drivers with the best route to their destination.

From the app’s map overview, users can pinpoint incidents like traffic jams, blocked roads and construction work themselves. They can also see how many people reported an incident and if it’s been verified by TomTom – making it easier for drivers to see what’s up ahead and helping them get from A to B hassle-free.

Straightforward guidance and helpful alerts

AmiGO uses TomTom’s navigation tech to provide users with the best routes to any destination. The app offers clear visual guidance and turn-by-turn instructions, plus precise arrival times, to help drivers navigate easily and confidently.

Real-time warnings also help drivers stay safe and relaxed along the way. AmiGO provides timely alerts about upcoming fixed and mobile speed cameras and average speed check zones, so drivers can make sure they’re safely within the speed limit on any stretch of road. The app alerts users to blocked and closed roads and live traffic jams, right on the map, and provides directions around them, saving time. Drivers can also avoid last-minute braking with info on whether a traffic jam up ahead is at a standstill or slow-moving.

People-powered navigation: AmiGO app

Distraction-free driving

Unlike other free navigation apps, AmiGO is 100% ad-free. We design all our products – even free ones like AmiGO – to protect users’ personal data and privacy. We never sell user data and we never serve up ads. It means drivers can enjoy greater peace of mind both on and off the road: driving without annoying ads and knowing that their data isn’t being used for anything other than improving TomTom tech.

Ready for any journey

AmiGO is currently available for Android, iPhone and Huawei. It's also recently been made available in beta release on Android Auto, allowing drivers to enjoy easy navigation directly from their in-car display.

Wherever you’re going, TomTom AmiGO is the perfect starting point for a stress-free journey. And you don’t just have to take our word for it – why not try it yourself? Download AmiGo from the App Store , Google Play or Huawei App Gallery today.

10 Apps That Will Make The Most Of Your Vacation In 2024

I f you've ever spent time at a networking event, made small talk at your kids' soccer games, or scrolled through a dating app, you'll know that "travel" is something almost everyone will tell you they enjoy. Couple that with an attachment to our smartphones that borders on co-dependent, and it's no surprise to learn that travel apps are a hot commodity. Some of the best innovations in travel come in the form of apps. Staying in touch with people at home, travel planning, staying organized on the road, or connecting with other travelers? Not only is there an app for that, there are many apps for that.

To help you sort through the plethora of what's out there, here are some travel-ready apps to make your vacation a blast. We've sourced suggestions from people who travel for a living and those who leave their local area only rarely, so no matter how often you jet-set, there is an app for you.

If your cell plan doesn't include international roaming, you can get slammed with steep fees for using mobile data outside your own country.

There are a few ways to get around roaming charges, including buying a local SIM card for the country you are traveling in, using a Wi-Fi stick , or investing in a dual SIM phone, like those from Samsung, Apple, or Google. One of the easiest and cheapest options though, is an eSIM app like Airalo . Airalo was one of the first in the eSIM game and continues to be popular with travelers. Fans of the app point to how easy it is to download and get started quickly, and how much it saves in fees. On the other hand, some users have noticed a discrepancy in how well it works in different countries. One reviewer on TrustPilot states "We do NOT recommend this plan given the extremely poor performance in Vietnam" despite noting excellent service in Hong Kong.

Airalo is a paid service, available on the App Store and on Google Play.

Google Maps is often the default app travelers reach for when navigating new territory. It's a trusted resource for a lot of reasons, including the ease of finding reviews and info for even very small businesses. But it's not the only map app out there, nor is it the best in every situation. The main advantage of Maps.me over Google Maps is that it is based on user-generated information. Particularly for folks who are getting around on foot, this "boots on the ground" approach is excellent and more direct than reporting problems to Google Maps . It also means that if you find a cool place on your travels and want to make sure other travelers can find it, you can add it to a map.

Like Google Maps and other useful way-finding apps, you can download maps and bookmark points of interest for offline use, although the background information on locations is not as robust as on Google Maps. Maps.me also allows you to access various modes of transportation while offline, which Google doesn't.

Maps.me is free to download and available from the App Store and from Google Play.

Cash's position as king is increasingly precarious. On your travels, you'll find cashless options in places you might not expect. The mass availability of mobile payment platforms like Square means you may be able to whip out your phone or card at Swiss coffee carts or Mexican street vendors. Wise (formerly Transferwise) lets you move between currencies seamlessly. Wise lets you operate in 40 currencies, which is particularly handy if you are traveling to several different countries. They advertise charges that are less than the major banks. However, some users have complained about complications with money transfers, so be forewarned if you intend to use this app for sending money.

Of note to travelers is the option to get an actual bank card that can function as an international debit card with a nominal conversion fee (not all bank cards can pay by debit in countries other than your home base.) Or, save a step and scan your phone to pay from your Wise account.

Wise is available on the App Store and from Google Play. There is no charge to download the app, but fees are charged for some banking activities.

If you are going to be traveling from place to place on your vacation, you will want the Rome2Rio app on your phone. Enter your destination and departure location, and the app spits out the options and approximate costs for each leg of your journey. For instance, if you are in Edmonton, Canada, and want to get to the Thai island of Ko Yao Yai, the app will suggest six options, labeling the best, cheapest, and fastest combination of flight, minibus, and ferry. You can't purchase tickets through the app, although there are links to book accommodation that take you to Booking.com. Being able to purchase travel fares through the app would make things easier, especially if they were offered in a package, but the absence of that feature means you can investigate and compare prices from different booking operators , so we are putting it in the win column.

Rome2Rio is free to download and available from the App Store and from Google Play.

Rick Steves Audio Europe

Rick Steves is recognized as a top voice in travel guides. His down-to-earth approach to travel has endeared multitudes of followers to him, spawning an industry of books, television shows, and a sprawling web presence that features how-to guides, articles, and an active travelers' forum. On top of all that, he has a free app for self-guided walking tours through many of Europe's top sights called Rick Steves Audio Europe . Reviewers of the app give it a high rating (4.7 on Google Play and 4.3 on the App Store) using superlatives like "This app is GOLD," and comparing the quality of the tours to paid audio tours. On the downside, it is difficult to sync the app on multiple devices, so if you are in a group you may all be at slightly different parts of the tour, which can be mildly annoying. There are a bunch of tour sites, with more added periodically.

The audio tours and accompanying maps are downloadable, so you don't need to worry about burning through mobile data or needing to rely on Wi-Fi. Rick Steve Audio Europe is free to download and available from the App Store and from Google Play.

How many trips come vividly back to life in your mind just by thinking about that one excellent bowl of Cacio e Pepe pasta or sun-drenched sip of a Paloma? Exploring a place through its flavors and discovering new spots to eat is a beloved part of travel. In Europe, TheFork (the French version is called LaForchette) is the go-to app for crowd-sourced restaurant reviews. Previously, the app also covered Australia, but at the start of 2024, it was announced they will be pulling out of Oz.

You can find Michelin-starred restaurants with months-long wait lists or little hole-in-the-wall spots by searching the name of the eating establishment, the city or neighborhood you want to eat in, or the kind of cuisine you are craving.

The app is worthy of its space on your phone just for the restaurant listings and reviews, but if you want to explore more of the capabilities, there are ways to expand its usefulness. You can make reservations, register to collect points, access discounts and specials at select spots, and pay through the app. TheFork is free to download and available from the App Store and from Google Play.

Looking for a little love on the road? The Fairytrail app might be the ticket to romance (or ROAMance) you are looking for. Aimed at digital nomads and van life devotees, the app is a nice addition to the dating lives of travelers of all stripes. Members are evaluated and assigned a fairytale character similar to enneagram-slash-Myers-Briggs personality types, which is a new and novel approach compared with other iPhone dating apps or Android dating apps .

Because the app is focused on people with nomadic lifestyles, matches are location-independent. The idea is that users of the app will be willing to travel to each other to meet and date. There is a setting that allows an extra layer of matching: dream places to visit. If you so choose, before chatting with a match you need to have an overlapping "bucket-list" destination. Previously, this was an unavoidable step but became an optional setting after it was changed in response to frustration expressed by reviewers. The app is being redesigned in 2024 and soliciting feedback from users. Stay tuned, it seems more happy endings are in store! Fairytrails is free to download with in-app purchases and is available from the App Store and from Google Play.

Price Scanner And Converter

A very unpleasant aspect of vacationing in another country is coming home to a shocking credit card bill. Part of the problem is the tendency of holidaymakers to spend like money isn't real, but the other problem is how difficult it is to calculate prices into your own currency. Sure, you can come up with shortcuts to do quick math, but that gives you an estimate rather than an exact cost. To help, there are many different currency converter apps out there, with features like real-time rate calculation and offline capability. The somewhat clunky-named Price Scanner and Converter takes it one step further by using your phone's camera to scan prices and display them automatically in your preferred currency (out of 150 global currencies.) New iPhone cameras also have a similar capability, but it isn't as seamless a process as using this app.

This price scanning app isn't presently available on Google Play, although there are similar apps to be found. The reviews are pretty overwhelmingly mediocre, so if you are on team Android, your best bet may be to download a regular currency converter and enter in prices the old-fashioned way.

Downloading the Price Scanner and Converter is free from the App Store.

Searching through your emails for confirmations and itineraries isn't an efficient way to access your travel information. And good luck if you have used your work email for some of your planning and your personal email for others. What if you are offline when you need to find your tour details? Nightmare fuel. Tripit has created a simple user experience, allowing you to forward all those endless travel planning emails to be arranged into an easily accessible itinerary in a single spot, which you can access from any of your devices.

Other features of this include the ability to load PDFs, QR codes, and other travel documents to your Tripit travel folder. There are helpful navigation tools, like airport maps, neighborhood safety ratings, and nearby places. You can share your travel plans and sync them to your calendar. For $49 a year (or a free 30-day trial) you can upgrade to Tripit Pro for enhanced travel aid, including notifications to help keep you on track and on time.

Tripit is free to download from the App Store and from Google Play, and you can upgrade to the premium Tripit Pro on the Tripit website or in the app.

Mobile Passport Control

The latest app from U.S. Customs and Border Patrol goes by the wildly creative name, " Mobile Passport Control ." It's a no-nonsense app with a no-nonsense name that allows users to streamline the customs experience. Rather than filling out declarations forms, users enter their information into the app and send it to border officials so they can access it as soon as they get to customs. You can do this immediately upon arrival, say as your plane is taxiing to the gate.

The app is for United States citizens and Canadians with a B-1 or B-2 visitor visa who are entering the USA at one of 33 American airports, 11 preclearance sites, and four seaports. It works in tandem with your passport, but it doesn't replace it.

As a bonus, some sites allow those with the Mobile Passport Control app to use their own (almost always shorter!) line or expedited Global Entry lines at passport control. You can enter family members on the same app and there is no approval process, just download and go.

A previous iteration of the app had a premium, paid version, but this is no longer the case. The app is free on the App Store and Google Play.

  • Ask your actual question. When you ask complex questions, Bing gives you detailed replies.
  • Get an actual answer. Copilot looks at search results across the web to offer you a summarized answer and links to its sources.
  • Be creative. When you need inspiration, Copilot can help you write poems or stories.

With the Copilot experience, you can also ask follow-up questions such as, “can you explain that in simpler terms,” or, “give me more options” to get different and even more detailed answers in your search. However, in Copilot, each conversation will have a limited number of interactions, to keep the interactions grounded in search.

Copilot builds on the existing Bing experience to provide you with a new type of search.

  • Beyond generating a list of relevant links, Copilot consolidates reliable sources across the web to give you a single, summarized answer.
  • Search in a way that feels natural to how you talk, text, and think. Copilot takes your complex searches and shares back a detailed response.
  • In the Copilot experience, you can chat naturally and ask follow-up questions to your initial search to get detailed replies.

Sparkling Discoveries

travel app amigo

Discovery #1 | AmiGo - Mobile Travel App

A curated recommendations app from a community of like-minded people & tastemakers..

travel app amigo

AmiGo is a curated recommendations app from a community of like-minded people and tastemakers. The app provides on-demand inspiration and helps people discover, plan and enjoy experiences uniquely tailored to them—the ultimate source for travel recommendations from people they trust. You can enhance how you explore the world with AmiGo.

travel app amigo

You can download it from here .

I stumbled upon the AmiGo app by chance while browsing through Instagram and came across Simay Demirel's profile (@simotto) , whose recommendations I found intriguing. I discovered the app from her and I decided to download it, driven by a keen curiosity to discover unique, off-the-beaten-path destinations of high quality during my travels, rather than sticking to typical tourist spots. Typically, I gather such recommendations from Instagram influencers like Simay, as well as from friends and I keep track of them on platforms like Notion.

travel app amigo

AmiGo exactly solves this discovery and organization problem for me. I can benefit from high-quality and niche recommendations (unlike Google Maps), save them, turn them into a travel plan, and even store my locations and venues here as a memory.

Users can only invite 5 people. When registering for the app, a referral code is required, so access to the app is limited. I asked for a code through a post on my Instagram account, and that's how I had the opportunity to try it. This is quite good on one side because it preserves the quality of niche and good recommendations.

Thanks for reading ✨ Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work.

The types of recommendations available in the AmiGo application are as follows:

Accommodation Places

Restaurants and Coffee Shops

Places to See and Things to Do

Shopping Venues

Party Spots

If a place recommendation hasn't been shared through the app before, the location information is pulled from Google Maps. This way, even if all places are not available in the app, they can still be selected with Google Maps data.

When sharing a location recommendation, you can mark the " Must Go " option on the screen where the information is filled out, allowing you to tell other users "You definitely should go here." The MustGo label is visible to other users when they see your recommendations.

Recommendations are also made based on captured photos and short comments. But you can recommend a place without a photo, or opt to add a public image from sources such as Foursquare and Google.

travel app amigo

The users you follow for recommendations are named " Amigos ".

Visited countries and their counts are displayed, and recommendations like "you should add this city & country" can be automatically generated based on the location of photos in the gallery.

travel app amigo

Users can add their favourite places to their wishlists to ensure they don't lose them, either from community or location-based recommendations. These wishlists can be automatically categorized by city and country, and places can also be listed without any categorization. This ensures that the places are stored in one place, and users can quickly access them when visiting a city or country.

travel app amigo

Recommendations & Organization

It's quite important for me to save the best places I usually visit in one place and to be able to access them again in the future, and sometimes to share these lists with my friends and close circle. Although platforms like Google Maps & Notion do help in creating lists or sharing these lists, the processes are manual and quite close to the community effect.

AmiGo greatly benefits me with automatic categorization and enriching my lists. I get inspired by original AmiGo editorial content and news, including cool hotel openings, hot spot restaurants, & more.

Reaching the best spots is very easy with a few searches. The most important thing I get insider tips from AmiGo’s trusted partners, photographers, stylists, travel writers, & more. They have a good taste and you can trust their knowledge because of their professional careers.

travel app amigo

Users can catalogue their favorite places in their travel diary and journal, and share them with friends and other AmiGo users.

I used to plan my travels on Notion, but once you save the places you'll go to in the app, planning the trip in the same app becomes easier and more effective. By entering the travel dates, automatic days are created, and you can easily arrange the saved places with a drag-and-drop mentality, and see them on the maps.

travel app amigo

Build Network

You can follow your friends and other AmiGos to discover the best recs and coolest spots. It also allows for meeting new people and discovering individuals with similar place preferences. I've already started following a few people whose recommendations I like :)

Marketing Strategy of AmiGo

Brilliant Travel Marketing Campaign Success for AmiGo App

“With a primary goal of the campaign being actual app downloads, Social Studies was very conscious to ensure that the campaign’s influencers were reaching the target audience and in a way that drove conversions. 8 creators were asked to post 3-frame Instagram story sequences twice to their Instagram along with 10-20 in-app posts to their AmiGo profile across 1-5 different destinations .  All in-app content was to go live prior to the AmiGo app launch, with the first story series going live around launch day and the second series to go live within the first week of launch.

Creators were briefed to discuss and share about the app in a way that conveyed its exclusivity as an invite-only app, an approach which helped spark a proven interest and curiosity within their followings. The creators also emphasized the invite-only aspect of the app, offering a limited number of waitlist-free invites available which helped increase the amount of people who utilized the story ‘swipe up’ feature to redeem their invite codes. With over 1,041 people downloading the app to their device, each influencer was assigned a unique invite code which allowed Social Studies to track top performers; two of which were reactivated for a second round of the campaign.”

Need to Improve

Performance & Speed: When trying to perform some specific actions through the app or during some page transitions, the app runs slowly and I need to wait a while to get results. There is a need for work on speed and optimization.

The Future: AmiGo monitors the waitlist, and add new users as often as possible while maintaining the tight-knit community. In the future, when the waitlist is removed and everyone starts to download the app, how to preserve that niche community concept needs to be considered. Because in terms of the value proposition it offers to its users, the growth of this app like Instagram will not please its own users.

User Experience: Having many pages and subpages in the application can complicate the user experience and make the development process more difficult. A simplified approach can make it easier for users to understand and use the application. Moreover, a simplified structure can reduce the burden on the development team, allowing them to add new features more quickly and effectively. This can increase user satisfaction as well as make the development process more efficient.

Donald Trump may face travel restrictions with his newfound felon status , potentially complicating his presidency if he were to win another term in office.

Thirty-eight nations, counting the United States, bar felons from entry, according to World Population Review . Those bans stand regardless of whether someone is allowed to retain their passport after conviction.

Countries that turn felons away include several of the United States' strongest allies, like the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada — the final of which will host the G7 summit of world leaders in 2025. The list also includes a number of nations at the center of pressing foreign policy issues, such as China, Israel and Mexico.

International governments can, and in some cases would, choose to make an exception for Trump if he requested special permission as president to make a visit.

George W. Bush , who was arrested for drunk driving in the 1970s, ran into issues with Canadian travel restrictions during his presidency while planning an official state visit and, after applying for a special waiver, he was ultimately allowed to enter.

In Bush's case, which still proved tedious, the circumstances were a bit different: the crime happened decades earlier, was only categorized as a misdemeanor and was never tried in a court of law (Bush admitted to driving under the influence upon arrest and got off with a fine and temporary license suspension). It's hard to say whether Trump's new 34 felony convictions would be dealt with in a similar manner.

Countries That Deny Entry to Felons

  • Dominican Republic
  • New Zealand
  • Philippines
  • South Africa
  • South Korea
  • United Arab Emirates
  • United Kingdom
  • United States

If Trump were elected to another term in the White House and chose to apply for special travel waivers, the irony would not go unnoticed.

The former president has often characterized foreigners as "criminals," and has campaigned on a promise to tighten U.S. travel restrictions, which would include shutting down the border and instating travel bans on people of certain nationalities and ideologies.

Cicada map 2024: Broods XIII and XIX emerge in Ohio vacationer hotspots

It's not necessarily a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but it doesn't happen often. It's typically more than a decade between times when periodical cicadas emerge in full force in many portions of the country.

They're out now in nearly 20 U.S. states across the Southeast and Midwest.

These 17 states, which range from Oklahoma to Wisconsin to North Carolina and more, are seeing the trillions of cicadas emerging this year in a rare, double brood event.

The two broods this year, the 13-year Brood XIX located mainly in the Southeast and the 17-year Brood XIII in the Midwest, have not emerged together in 221 years and are not expected to do so again until 2245.

Thanks to warm soil temperatures and ideal conditions, cicadas from both broods have already made their way above ground and the emergence is already in full swing.

Here's where you can find cicadas above ground this year.

What do cicadas eat? Lifecycle, diet and biting habits explained

2024 cicada map: Check out where Broods XIII, XIX are projected to emerge

The two cicada broods were projected to emerge in a combined 17 states across the South and Midwest. They emerge once the soil eight inches underground reaches 64 degrees, beginning in many states in April and May and lasting through late June.

The two broods  last emerged together in 1803 , when Thomas Jefferson was president.

Traveling from Ohio or Northern Kentucky this summer? You may see cicadas

Are you an Ohio or Kentucky resident traveling to places like middle Tennessee or western North Carolina? Well then, be on the lookout for cicadas.

Gatlinburg, Tennessee, and Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, both less than 300 miles from Cincinnati and under 400 miles from Columbus, are Ohio vacationer hotspots where cicadas are above ground this spring.

If you're eyeing a Lake Michigan getaway, you're likely to share the beach with some 17-year cicadas.

New Buffalo in Southwest Michigan, which is less than 300 miles from Columbus and Cincinnati and slightly more than 300 miles from Akron, has cicadas.

Likewise for Indiana Dunes in Northern Indiana — also less than 300 miles from Columbus and Cincinnati and a little over 300 miles from Akron. Northern Illinois, including the Chicago area, are also expected to experience 17-year cicadas this year.

Where are the cicadas in 2024? App developed in Cincinnati tracks sightings

Adult periodical cicadas from Brood XIX are out in full force in states across the Midwest and Southeast, according to  Cicada Safari , a cicada tracking app developed by Mount St. Joseph University in Cincinnati, Ohio.

App users have spotted them in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, southern Illinois, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.

Brood XIII has emerged in Wisconsin, Iowa, and Indiana. The Chicago area and around central and northern Illinois and downstate areas around the cities of Peoria and Champaign are experiencing cicada mania, according to the tracking service.

Does Ohio have cicadas?

Ohio is  not  in the path of the two broods appearing across much of the Southeast and Midwest, according to the University of Connecticut. However, you might still spot either brood this spring as "some stragglers may pop up in the southwest of the state," according to Ohio State University's  Buckeye Environmental Horticulture Team .

Parts of southern and southwest Ohio will see the emergence of Brood XIV cicadas in 2025, per OSU's Buckeye Environmental Horticulture Team.

Confusingly, Brood XIII emerges every 17 years while Brook XIX resurfaces every 13 years, according to the  University of Illinois .

Will cicadas emerging this year fly to Ohio?

Ohio is not expected to see an onslaught of periodical cicadas from either Brood XIX or XIII, but some neighboring states will.

So will the cicadas be able to fly to Ohio? That's unlikely for two reasons.

First, cicadas are clumsy flyers, and their wings are not suitable for long distance travel, according to  Science News Explores .

Plus, periodical cicadas emerge only to molt, breed, lay eggs and die, all within a few weeks. They don't spend time looking for new territory. Cicadas typically fly less than half a mile from the spot where they emerge, according to the University of Illinois. So, 17-year cicadas from Abraham Lincoln's day have spread roughly five miles total.

What is a brood?

According to the  University of Connecticut , broods are classified as "all periodical cicadas of the same life cycle type that emerge in a given year."

A brood of cicadas is made up of different species of the insect that have separate evolutionary histories. These species may have joined the brood at different times or from different sources. These distinct species are lumped together under the brood because they are in the same region and emerge on a common schedule.

How long will the cicadas be above ground?

How long cicadas live depends on their brood and if they are an annual or periodical species.

The two periodical broods this summer are Brood XIX, which has a 13-year life cycle, and Brood XIII, which has a 17-year life cycle.

Once male and female periodical cicadas have mated and the latter has laid its eggs, the insects will die after spending only a few weeks above ground − anywhere from three to six weeks after first emerging.

That means many of this year's periodical cicadas are set to die in June, though some could die off in late May or July, depending on when they emerged.

The nymphs of annual cicadas remain underground for  two to five years , according to the Missouri Department of Conservation. These cicadas are called " annual " because some members of the species emerge as adults each year.

Why do cicadas make so much noise?

You'll have to thank the male cicadas for all that screeching. Male cicadas synchronize their calls and produce congregational songs, according to  Britannica , which establish territory and attract females. There is also a courting call before mating.

The periodical 13-year and 17-year brood cicadas are the loudest, partially because of the sheer number of them that emerge at once.

5 dead in Kentucky after tornadoes, severe weather. Here's what we know

travel app amigo

At least five people have died across Kentucky following two tornadoes and other severe weather on Sunday that damaged property and left tens of thousands without power.

At 12:12 a.m. Monday, Gov. Andy Beshear issued a state of emergency for the commonwealth. This declaration allows the state to bring in additional resources such as the National Guard.

Gov. Andy Beshear held an 11 a.m. press conference Monday — Memorial Day, to address the ongoing weather situation and provide an update on storm damage along with the state’s response plan.

"Last night many families and communities were not safe," Beshear said. "We had devastating storms that hit almost the entire state."

At least two confirmed F-1 tornadoes touched down in Kentucky, according to preliminary survey results from the National Weather Service in Louisville. One tornado with 90 mph winds hit eastern Meade and northern Hardin counties. A second tornado touched down in Butler and northern Warren counties with 85 mph winds.

In Louisville and other parts of the state there were tornado watches and severe thunderstorms that brought down trees and caused property damage.

The Memorial Day weekend storms weren't the state's first run in with tornadoes and storms this year. In April storms moved through Louisville and Southern Indiana leaving destruction, and in March three tornadoes that caused structural damage were confirmed in the area .

Now following yet another series of severe weather in Kentucky, here's what we know:

What part of the state was hit hardest?

Beshear said one tornado in Western Kentucky continued for about 40 miles. This tornado barely missed the prison in Eddyville and barely missed Mayfield, the site of the destructive 2021 tornadoes that the area is still recovering from .

"At least one family who lost their home in the 2021 tornado lost their home again last night," Beshear said.

He noted there were several other tornadoes that "spun down then spun back up." The state is still waiting for the National Weather Service to confirm the total number of tornadoes.

Kentucky Secretary of Transportation Jim Gray said it appears that Western Kentucky was hit the hardest by the storms, noting damages across state highways and roads.

Beshear said not only did the storms take out power for thousands of people, but many roads and interstates were temporarily closed due to the storms. Many businesses and residential areas also suffered "massive damage." Beshear urged individuals to report any and all levels of damage to the emergency management agencies in their county to help the state qualify for FEMA assistance and other resources.

"But like we always see after severe weather events, first responders and everyday Kentuckians rally to help each other in those toughest moments," Beshear said.

Were there any fatalities from the storms?

In the press conference, the governor confirmed at least four people have died and one individual is "fighting for their life" as a result of the Sunday storms.

In a statement sent on X just before 5 p.m. Monday, Beshear confirmed that a fifth person has died related to the severe weather.

"I’m sad to share we have another reported death as a result of yesterday’s storms," read the post. "A 54-year-old man died from a heart attack while cutting fallen trees in Caldwell County. His loved ones are in our prayers during this difficult time."

Confirmed fatalities also include a 67-year-old woman from Mercer County, a 62-year-old woman in Hardin County, a 48-year-old woman in Hopkins County and a 34-year-old man in Jefferson County who was hit by a tree.

Beshear said he is not aware of any unaccounted for Kentuckians.

How many people are without power?

Statewide, there were roughly 175,000 customers without power across the state, Beshear said. While large cities should expect to see power restored Monday, the governor said counties like Trigg and Todd may be without power for several days since there was significant destruction to the power infrastructure in the area.

How many states of emergency have been declared?

Across the state, 14 counties and five cities have declared states of emergency alongside the governors declaration.

Is there a storm shelter set up?

The Red Cross has opened a shelter in Clay County.

Beshear also said Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park will be opened up as a shelter for those in need of rooms. This site is where victims of the 2021 tornado were sheltered.

Are there any environmental concerns from the storm?

On Dale Hollow Lake, a dock broke away, which was believed to have caused a significant fuel spill. The Energy and Environment Cabinet are in the area with a hazmat team but currently no further information is available regarding this potential environmental impact resulting from the storms.

"It's one of the most significant impacts of these storms," Beshear said.

Can I travel currently?

Gray said if you see water in the roads, "turn around, don't drown."

He also expressed other safety notes for people who need to travel in the midst of storm damage including:

  • Don't drive over downed power lines.
  • Don't touch live wires or downed power lines.
  • Beware of debris on roadways.
  • If traffic lights are out, treat the intersection as a four-way stop.

Spirit Airlines gets rid of change and cancellation fees for all tickets

travel app amigo

Spirit Airlines is the latest carrier to eliminate change and cancellation fees.

The new policy went into effect on Friday, with Spirit's website saying, "cancel fees are canceled for everyone" and "change fees are gone for all."

The budget airline previously charged between $69 and $119 for ticket changes, depending on the number of days remaining before the flight, according to Simple Flying . However, it was already free to change a flight reservation within 24 hours of booking or 60 days before departure.

"Spirit has been evaluating changes to our product and strategy that will help us better compete, elevate the guest experience and return to profitability," the airline said in a statement emailed to USA TODAY. "This new policy is among the best in the industry because it applies to each and every guest. We have many other enhancements in the works and look forward to sharing more soon."

Changes to flights can be made up to an hour before the scheduled departure time, and any changes or cancellations can be done online under the My Trips page or the Spirit chat function, or by sending a direct message to Spirit on social media. Guest agents at the airport can also help with flight changes.

Learn more: Best travel insurance

If a customer cancels their reservation within 24 hours of booking and the flight is seven or more days away, they're eligible for a full refund. Otherwise, they will receive a flight credit for the value of the reservation, according to Spirit's website.

Spirit's first quarter 2024 results reported a loss, and Chief Financial Officer Scott Haralson said the airline is "on the cusp of making changes which we believe will position us on the road back to sustained profitability" following the failed JetBlue merger last year.

Also on Friday, fellow budget carrier Frontier Airlines' announced it was also doing away with change and cancellation fees in an effort to be more transparent with customers.

The Department of Transportation has been cracking down on hidden and junk fees that airlines pose onto customers. What often seems like a low price can quickly add up when adding carry-on baggage or seat selection. Last month, the DOT banned bait-and-switch tactics – in which a discounted fare is advertised but doesn't include mandatory fees – and to make it more transparent that seats are guaranteed and it's unnecessary to purchase one.

Cool Arizona cabins to rent this summer, from Flagstaff to Sedona to Payson to Greer

Most residents can recite Arizona's 5 C's that have long been driven the state economy — copper, citrus, codgers and cactus candy. Or something like that.

If there were a sixth C, it would be cabins.

Cabins have dotted the Arizona landscape since frontier days, first as a necessity and now as a welcome luxury. They are the getaways of our dreams, providing a quiet sanctuary in the forests and meadows of the high country. The promise of cooler temperatures and peaceful days far from the city sends desert dwellers flocking to cabins throughout the summer.

Treat yourself to a memorable getaway at one of these 10 cabins in Sedona, Flagstaff, Greer and Payson, Pinetop and Mogollon Rim Country.

Cabins come in different sizes and include varying amenities such as kitchens, fireplaces and outdoor grills. There’s an onsite coffee house and the property offers private access to Oak Creek. Cabins start at $125.
