Geograhy and environment.

South Korea is located at the south end of the Korean Peninsula, between the Sea of Japan and the Yellow Sea. Separated from   Japan   by the Korean Strait and demarcated from the state of North Korea by Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), South Korea's terrain is a mix of flat lowlands and forested mountains. The coasts of South Korea are rocky and jagged, with thousands of islands (mostly inhabitable) scattered off the coastline.

Culture and customs

South Korea draws some traditions and customs from other neighboring countries in Asia, with a culture that stems from Confucianism. This system of philosophical and ethical teachings was introduced to South Korea in the 4 th century through Chinese scholars and was quickly embraced by the wider population until it officially became the state ideology in the early 1900s.

Confucianism emphasizes respect for aging, elders and ancestors, an intrinsic hierarchy that runs through work and social life, and upholds traditional family roles so you’ll often see families living together in one house.

During your travels around South Korea, you’ll also see plenty of traditions such as the act of bowing when greeting people, women wearing traditional dress (hanbok) and the practice of taekwondo (Korean martial arts). As well as ancient beliefs, new generations of South Koreans are embracing a modernized culture, one full of K-pop, Korean cosmetics and popular foods like kimchi and tteokbokki.

History and government

South Korea’s had an often turbulent history dating back to around 8000 BC when it was known as just Korea, but the country’s most impactful conflict began in the 1500s with the attempted Japanese invasion. Korea went on to become a Japanese colony in 1910 following its annexation of the Korean Empire, which ended in 1945 at the conclusion of World War II.

The country was then divided into two parts, the northern part which was protected by the Soviet Union and the southern part which was protected largely by the United States. Both the northern and southern parts of Korea officially became North and South Korea in 1948 when the two regions failed to agree on forming one, united government.

In 1950, North Korea set in motion the Korean War which was intended to unify the two countries under communism. But after much destruction to infrastructure and loss of human life, a cease-fire was called in 1953 with both countries signing the 1953 Korean Armistice Agreement. The two countries have since agreed to work towards a final settlement (The Peace Treaty on the Korean Peninsula) to formally and officially end the Korean War.

South Korea now enjoys a fully prosperous economy with a capital economic standing similar to that of countries such as the United States, Japan, and various countries in Western Europe.

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

When is the best time to visit South Korea?

Autumn and spring are considered the optimal times to holiday in South Korea, as the extreme temperatures that are present during summer and winter can make travel uncomfortable at times. During autumn and spring expect moderate temperatures, a mild climate and less rain and humidity than at other times.

Is tipping customary in South Korea?

Tipping in some establishments (particularly more traditional ones) is considered impolite, and is sometimes indicated with a 'no tipping' sign! Western-style, tourist-orientated places, however, usually welcome and receive tips. Use your discretion.

What is the internet access like in South Korea?

With one of the most developed internet infrastructures in the world, accessing the internet is easy in South Korea. Wi-Fi hot spots and cyber cafes are easily found in the cities, although when traveling in remote areas please be aware that internet access may be harder to find.

Can I use my cell phone while in South Korea?

Travelers should be able to use their cell phones in South Korea's cities and urban areas, as coverage is good. As in other countries, rural and mountainous areas may have less mobile phone receptivity. Ensure global roaming is activated with your service provider before leaving home.

What are the toilets like in South Korea?

South Korea has a combination of squat toilets and western-style flushable toilets. It's a good idea to carry your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer or soap while on holiday, as these are rarely provided in public toilets.

Can I drink the water in South Korea?

Tap water is considered safe to drink in many parts of South Korea unless otherwise marked. Ask your leader for guidance if you are unsure whether to drink tap water in the area you are traveling in.

Are credit cards accepted widely in South Korea?

Credit cards are usually accepted by hotels and large retailers. Smaller shops and restaurants may not accept credit cards, so always carry enough money to cover purchases, as paying with a credit card may not always be an option in South Korea.

What is ATM access like in South Korea?

ATMs are plentiful in large cities and urban centers, although not all ATMs accept foreign cards. Look for Global or Citibank ATMs, which usually accept cards from other countries.

Michael, our tour guide, was patient, friendly, and flexible with different age travelers and physical abilities by adjusting the activities for them. The Best of Korea tour's itinerary was very full. I think many of us enjoyed the itinerary and the experiences we had. I, particularly, enjoyed the various transportation methods which added to the experience. The War Memorial Hall of Korea museum is a big museum and had very important history. Most of us needed more time. I think this activity could of come at the beginning of the tour for us to have better knowledge of Korean history. On the tour's last day, after the museum, most of us thought there was going to be a group dinner. The tours I have been in the past had end of the tour dinner to say good bye and show our appreciation to the tour guide. It's nice to have a closure after spending a week together. We were disappointed that the day just ended after returning to the hotel. After the DMZ visit, we had a very nice lunch at a well known restaurant. This time could of have been a good opportunity to say good bye but I think due to limited time, food came out late, we didn't linger.

Ich hatte mich für die Reise "Check-in Korea with Jeju Island in 16days: A Wellness Holiday" entschieden. Es war mir bei der Buchung nicht erkenntlich, dass die angebotene Reise ein Baukastensystem ist und dabei auch einzelne Tagestouren beinhaltet sind. Um an den Tagestouren teilnehmen zu können ist es bei einzelnen Touren erforderlich zu einem bestimmten Treffpunkt zu gelangen. Daher wird bei der Ausschreibung der Reise eine Orientierungsfähigkeit gefordert. Nun ich denke, dies alleine reicht nicht aus. Man benötigt hierüber auch Kenntnisse welche Metro oder Busse man nehmen muss, wie viele Stationen zufahren sind in welche Richtung man die Bushaltestelle nutzt und in welche Richtung man fahren muss und dass es gut ist sich eine T-Money Card zu besorgen oder wie man zu einem Taxi kommt. Auch einen Hinweis, wie lange man braucht, um dort hin zukommen ist wichtig. Es wäre gut, wenn man diese Informationen mit den Reiseunterlagen erhalten würde. Mit Englisch oder einer aufgeschrieben Adresse wird man nur bei einem Teil der Koreaner verstanden. Und selbst ein gutes Jahr koreanisch Unterricht kann sich als nicht ausreichend herausstellen. Hierfür habe ich einen Stern abgezogen. Ich habe mich durch das Personal von Hana Tour ITC sehr gut betreut und versorgt gefühlt. Die Tourguides David (Jeju Do) und Mark (Rundreise Südkorea) und der jungen Dame (DMZ Tour) habe ich nicht nur als engagierte Guides erlebt. Sie vermitteln mit ihrem ganzen Herzen, wie sehr sie ihr Land lieben und welche wunderschöne Dinge es in diesem zauberhaften und magischen Land zu entdecken gibt, im jetzt und historisch/traditionell. Mit großer Fürsorge kümmerten sie sich um ihre Gäste und deren Wohl und wussten ihr Land auf vielfältige Weise für die Reiseteilnehmer erfahrbar zu machen. Das tägliche Programm war sehr gut organisiert, was auch der Professionalität der Guides zu zuschreiben ist. Die Hotels waren gut ausgewählt. Zum Schluss noch ein großes Dankeschön an die Fahrer, die ihren Job gut gemacht haben und man sich zu jeder Zeit sicher gefühlt hat. Danke an das Team von Hana Tour.

The schedule was well organized and kept to the original one as outlined in the program which is why I chose this particular trip.

The tour was comprehensive and the tour leader was informative and amusing. To improve the experience further I would use a minibus to get around in Seoul rather than splitting the party and sending them off in small groups in taxis.

The trip was very nice. Helena our local guide was very patient with the group and explained a lot. She and the bus driver were a well-rehearsed team. The included restaurants were also varied. The hotels were twice with carpeting, which I personally would not choose. Otherwise, the standard is a bit more than is usual in European hotels. The tour is bilingual, you should be aware of, but for everyone who doesn't mind Spanish and wants to know more than one culture, the tour is great. After the tour it is not necessary to stop and a longer stay in Busan and Soeul is highly recommended.

Wasting so much time for bilingual translations for the last 2 weeks. Tour guides and busses keep changes every 2-3 days with no reason even all buses goes the same direction. Not sure about Spanish side, but English was awful from all 4 guides we had throughout those 2 weeks. You better pick other companies who would provide a single bus with a single tour guide and ONLY with your language. You’re getting what you're paying for, 100%.

great overview of Korea, guide was knowledgable and friendly, value for money as many delicious and authentic meals were included. Hotels were modern and comfortable. My only complaint was the hotel in Seoul was not as well located as it could have been a bit far from the main sites. However for the price this was an extremely good value tour and I enjoyed it very much and would have no hesitation in recommending it.

Fantastic introduction to Korean food and culture. This trip had a great mix of walking, eating and chillin. If you’re an expert in Korean food, this may not be the best tour since it’s an intro with slightly more western tastes in mind, but we did try exotic things like murder hornet soju! Haha everything was good and the group was awesome. Everyone got along well, and the guide Michelle made the tour go very smoothly. Some days were >20k steps so def being comfortable walking shoes. One thing to remember is that the dmz visit is not a part of the tour, and in general the dmz is not available on Mondays… so if adding on, you’d have to stay until Tuesday or do it Sunday before tour starts.

I have way to many positive things to mention about this trip. First of all Jacob our tour guide went beyond being an amazing leader. The first few days by myself in in Seoul were overwhelming but having Jacob who knew what he was doing in the city made it feel like our group was part of the city, and we felt safe and comfortable walking the streets Jacob's amount of knowledge about the food , history and hidden gems made the days fly by. All accommodations and restaurants were fantastic. I absolutely recommend this tour. The only problem with the tour was that it ended too early. Because of this tour I am absolutely coming back to South Korea and hope Jacob can be my tour guide. Thanks for an amazing trip.

I really hate giving a bad review and liked Frank Shinn. He tried to do his best but his English was lacking. He did not explain much or give any information or interesting stories about places we were going or while on the way to. It seemed we were on our own and not led to the more interesting spots that were in the tour. The bus driver was excellent and felt very safe with his driving. Of the four hotels, the Commodore was the worst, bad food, and hot rooms.

It was a great trip! We kept busy the entire time while also having some free time, had a lot of really great traditional Korean food at spots you would probably never find otherwise. And did a lot of activities! A lot of tours tend to be less focused on food/activity and more on museums/things to see. So it was nice to get one to keep me active! Everything was nicely planned and alternatives were always ready should there be bad weather.

The only problem was getting food in the evening from some of the towns and hotels because they were either closing for the night or the hotels didn’t serve after 8 or 9 pm. So maybe knowing this the tour guide can arrange for something earlier. Otherwise the tour guide and driver were wonderful.

The tour on the whole was good. The only hotel I would change is the Koreana. Firstly their staff know very little English and they are very unfriendly and not helpful at all. Also this hotel is situated right where most of the protest rallys occur so all roads leading to it especially on the weekends are closed. The hotel staff make no effort to help their guests check in or check out. Even though our room was available 2 hours before check in time they wanted to charge us an additional fee to check in early after we had an awful time trying to get to their hotel with all the roads closed because of the protest rally.Even on the day our tour started the tour guide could not meet us at the designated spot because the roads were closed due to the protests. The guide got to us about 25 minutes later than what was agreed.

Most of this tour’s destination were just ok, only 2 locations were better and the duration of stay per location can use some improvements. For example, they gave us over 2 hours at one temple and not enough time at the national park. Most of our lunch times were pressed short, everything is in Korean so we have to google translate after waiting in lines after we find which place we want to order from. And it went on like that throughout our week. I read the itinerary when I signed up but their details were not very clear. We take at least 1 multi day tour if not more during our vacations and this tour did not compare at all. After this tour ended, we had a few extra days left and trained back to Busan, bought a day tour in Busan and it had so much more to see. The good parts of this tour was that we got to visit all the different villages and learned some of their history.

Overall planning was great ( flights, hotel, pick up from the airport, guide). Few areas for improvement would be knowledgeable updates on tourist visa information, distance between locations were widely miscalculated and generally took an hour or more to get to our destinations between cities, the number of stops between drives was too frequent also causing delays, location of hotels wasn’t in the best locations (generally out of the way) and it would have been helpful to let us know we would be responsible for our tour guides lunch and snacks and that we would be taking lunch with them for all our lunches.

A very good tour that I would highly recommend. But, it could be better. We loved the various destinations and generally had ample time to take everything in. Our bus was fine and the driver was excellent. A good driver and helpful with luggage. The hotels were good, but food wax an issue. Restaurants were closed so twice we had to go out and find a suitable restaurant. MacDonalds. Twice we found a 7-11 type shops and bought food and took it back tour room. Our guide was a good bloke, but his English was just OK. Given those issues, it was a terrific tour and gave us a good insight to this fabulous country.

Our Guide Julian was amazing! Very attentive and always giving us advice and recommendations on where to go and what to eat. I also loved the variety of stays ranging from hostels, to Temple stay and relaxing hotels. It might not be everyone's cup of tea but I really enjoyed that we took public transportation most of the time since it gave us a chance to really experience the local culture and see the real parts of SK.

Korea Travel Mate trips are mainly operated on weekends either a day trip or an overnight trip. However, we occasionally run trips on weekdays as well.

About once or twice a year, Korea Travel Mate ventures out of Korea to take you on some great travel adventures to neighboring countries, such as Japan.

6. Who can join the trips?

Any foreigners who are living in Korea or traveling to/in Korea.

7. Do you provide private tour packages?

Yes, private tours can be organized and run while keeping Korea Travel Mate's policies and strategies in mind. As a result, if you have a community with whom you would like to have your own customized tour, you are only a phone call, email, or message away from getting it started.

8. Do you provide private rooms if needed?

Yes, on most of the trips private rooms can be provided for the extra cost that is mentioned in the signup form of the specific trip.

9. Do you provide Halal or Vegetarian/Vegan food?

We always do our best to provide food that suits the specific needs of each individual, however, please keep in mind that Halal meat is not provided on our travels since we travel to rural locations where Halal meat is not available, also it is not in our tour budget. If you require Halal, please consider yourself a vegetarian on our trips. Rising tensions with North rattle S. Korean border town

STORY: Yoon Seol-hyun's guesthouse near the border with North Korea is usually packed with tourists, keen to take a peek at the isolated North.

But he and other residents of the South Korean town of Paju, some 22 miles from the frontier, have been hurt by a recent rise in tensions on the peninsula.

Yoon's accommodation and travel agency lie along a tourism hiking route exploring parts of the Demilitarized Zone

“It's severe. It's not just me, I'm just running a small-scale business, and most people in the region are involved in agriculture. However, there are many people here who work in businesses related to DMZ peace tourism. Essentially, the number of tourists has recently decreased.”

North Korea sent hundreds of balloons carrying trash and excrement across the heavily fortified border last week, sparking emergency alerts and round-the-clock media coverage in its neighbor.

The South responded by resuming military activities along the demarcation line.

Seoul has not ruled out the return of loudspeakers to blast propaganda at the border with the North.

For residents of Paju, it was a frightening escalation.

“In the past, even when there were things like armoured vehicle mobility training in the fields, people used to just think of it as training. But now, there's a heightened sensitivity, wondering if there might be an accident or some incident occurring.”

Activists have flown balloons full of anti-North Korea leaflets from Paju across the border, sparking tensions with local residents who tried to stop them.

North Korean defector and activist Park Sang-hak has vowed to keep sending the balloons.

No Hyun-ki another resident of Paju, described it as "the tensest city."

“Loudspeakers could be reinstalled, right? Then there's a sense of fear that North Korea might fire artillery towards this area, and that their shells could come flying towards this place.”

The two Koreas remain technically at war since an armistice agreement ended fighting in the early 50s.

Their militaries face off across the border.

North Korea has deployed missiles and rockets aimed at the South and routinely threatens to annihilate its neighbor.

SINGAPORE: China, Japan and South Korea will all benefit if they can get a three-way free trade agreement (FTA) across the line, but they will have to overcome serious challenges stemming from geopolitical tensions and other issues, experts say.

Talks for their FTA have stalled since 2019, but the elusive trade deal was cast into the spotlight again last Monday at a trilateral summit attended by Chinese Premier Li Qiang, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol.

At the summit – the first in four years – the three leaders vowed to restart talks on the FTA. 

China’s Mr Li called for South Korea and Japan "to deepen economic and trade connectivity, maintain the stability and smoothness of the industrial chain and supply chain, and resume and complete the negotiations of the China-Japan-South Korea FTA as soon as possible".

Three days later on May 30, China’s Ministry of Commerce said it stood ready to speed up negotiations.

The Chinese side attaches great significance to talks on the FTA, which is expected to drive the steady recovery of the regional and even global economy, ministry spokesperson He Yadong said, as reported by state news agency Xinhua.

Korean president Mr Yoon, meanwhile, said the three countries had “decided to create a transparent and predictable environment for trade and investment, and to establish a safe supply chain”.

At a trilateral business meeting held after the summit, business leaders agreed to establish a working group to conduct joint research on economic cooperation in the private sector.

BUILDING ON RCEP

The three countries have economic heft. They make up about 25 per cent of global gross domestic product (GDP) and have a combined yearly trading volume of over US$800 billion.

China is the largest trading partner of Japan and South Korea, while Japan and Korea are China’s fourth and fifth largest trading partners, respectively.

In restarting FTA talks, the East Asian neighbours will be building on existing trade pacts to try to deliver one that signals their strongest economic bonds yet, experts note.

China and South Korea have an FTA signed in 2015. 

All three countries are members of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, which took effect in 2022. The RCEP is an FTA among the 10 member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Australia, China, Japan, South Korea and New Zealand. 

A China-Japan-South Korea FTA will be recognised as “RCEP Plus”, going beyond the RCEP’s level of liberalisation.

For instance, the three countries will aim to fully abolish tariffs on automobiles and auto components, which the RCEP did not, reported news agency Nikkei Asia.

Japan will also seek reductions in industrial subsidies and less preferential treatment for state-owned enterprises, which were left out of the RCEP, Nikkei Asia reported.

Commitments by the three countries to each other under RCEP are “relatively thin”, noted Dr Deborah Elms, head of trade policy at the Hinrich Foundation in Singapore. The foundation works to advance sustainable global trade through research and education.

A three-way FTA will allow them to be more focused, she said. “If there're only three of you in the partnership, you can tailor an agreement often in ways that are more ambitious in some areas, than if you're trying to do it with (15 parties).” 

Although China’s commerce ministry spokesperson He said the three countries’ economies are highly complementary and their industrial chains highly interconnected, Dr Elms said they are also competitors in many fields including agriculture, electronics and chemicals.

Finding products for which to remove tariffs will be “a challenge”, she said, citing furniture, raw materials and services as potential areas to be opened up.

WHO’S EAGER FOR TALKS?

While some experts say China is keenest to advance FTA talks due to its economic challenges, others believe an agreement will also serve South Korea and Japan.

China’s eagerness to push for the FTA is not surprising, said Professor Syaru Shirley Lin, chair of the Center for Asia-Pacific Resilience and Innovation and research professor at the University of Virginia in the United States.

“Closer market integration among these countries makes economic sense. Given China's economic challenges, reflected in the real estate slump, weak consumption and private-sector investment, and the pressure of deflation and growing debt, Beijing needs serious measures to boost its growth,” she said.

China’s excess industrial capacity and cheap exports of solar panels, electric vehicles and steel are currently facing pressure from the US, which fears they will hurt its own domestic manufacturing efforts. 

The US has increased tariffs on some Chinese imports , including a 100 per cent tax on its electric vehicles, and wants to work with Europe on what it calls China’s overproduction.

Dr Zhu Zhiqun, a professor of political science and international relations at Bucknell University, disagreed that China was more eager than Japan or South Korea. All three countries have “collective interest” in making progress on trade and supply chain issues, he said.

Summit host South Korea made a notable effort to jumpstart the trilateral summit. Earlier in May, its foreign minister Cho Tae-yul visited his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in Beijing to pave the way for the summit.

While South Korean President Yoon has sought to strengthen ties with the US and Japan, Mr Cho reportedly stressed that it does not mean South Korea is drifting away from China .

Proceed with caution.

Given the need to balance geographical and market realities with US-China rivalry, the three countries will likely move cautiously if FTA talks resume, analysts note.

The US remains “the most important ally and partner” for both Japan and South Korea, said Dr Zhu.

“Yet, China is right next door and is their largest trading partner. It is not in their interest to have a confrontational relationship with China," he said.

On the other hand, Japan and South Korea “perceive their asymmetric economic interdependence with China as a disadvantage” and this has prompted them to pursue economic diversification, particularly in light of growing US-China strategic competition, noted Prof Lin.

“Consequently, in the negotiation process, Tokyo and Seoul will be more cautious and likely to demand that China address concerns about manufacturing overcapacity, subsidies, and preferential treatment for its state-owned enterprises — issues Beijing has yet to tackle,” she said.

Data shows that both South Korea and Japan have reduced investment in China in recent years. 

In 2023, South Korea recorded a trade deficit with China for the first time in 31 years, importing US$18 billion more goods and services than it exported, according to Statistics Korea.

Foreign direct investment by South Korean companies into China also slumped 78.1 per cent to US$1.87 billion in 2023 compared to the previous year, according to South Korea’s Finance Ministry. 

Meanwhile, net new money from Japan into China last year fell to its lowest in at least a decade, amounting to 1.31 trillion Japanese yen (US$11.91 billion), according to data from the country's Ministry of Finance. 

Half of 1,741 Japanese companies polled expect the Chinese economy to worsen in 2024, an increase from 37 per cent at the end of last year, a recent survey conducted by the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry in China found.

KEEPING UP MOMENTUM

Experts also have mixed views on the likelihood of an FTA happening in the foreseeable future.

Dr Elms does not hold high hopes. “This one’s going to take forever. I mean, a lot of them take forever, just because they're complicated,” she said.

The latest vows by the three leaders will “not make a difference” to companies until the talks move to "a genuine stage" where there are real economic benefits on the table and a deal is "very close to signing", she added.

Dr Zhu is more optimistic. “If the three countries keep the momentum, remove the remaining obstacles, and resist potential external interference, an FTA could be reached before too long,” he said.

“Pragmatism must prevail over ideology or great power politics.”  

All sides will certainly have to ramp up efforts if they are serious about the FTA – meeting more frequently and having big teams engaging in discussions with greater intensity, for example, said Dr Elms.

Once-a-year talks “would not bring about much change”, she said.

With the opening of the nation's full-fledged space agency, Korea is set to make its mark on the global space stage, aiming to transform into a powerhouse and join the elite space race led by the private industry.

The Korea AeroSpace Administration (KASA) will open its doors Monday, focusing on fostering local companies that can play key roles in space development projects, and helping the country develop a global-level space industry and space economy.

"Until now, the country's space development projects have been led by the government," Yoon Young-bin, KASA's inaugural chief, said earlier. "The most important role of the space agency will be supporting the private sector to lead space development."

He pointed out that the world's space industry is moving toward the so-called "new space" era, where private companies are actively leading innovation in space technologies with more economic feasibility.

"The global paradigm is shifting," Yoon said, noting that top space companies, such as SpaceX, have developed reusable space rockets and launched a group of small satellites with capabilities similar to medium- and large-sized satellites.

To keep up with this trend, Korea established KASA, the Korean version of the United States' National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), located in Sacheon, approximately 300 kilometers south of Seoul.

The 293-member agency will lead the nation's space programs, such as the moon and Mars exploration, and bolster Korean companies' competitiveness in the global space industry.

Two years ago, the Korean government announced its plan to land a homegrown spacecraft on the moon in 2032 and Mars in 2045 as part of efforts to become one of the top-five global space powers.

Korea was a latecomer in the highly advanced industry but is currently considered the seventh-strongest space power after having successfully developed the 200-ton space rocket Nuri in recent years.

The country also plans to develop a next-generation rocket, named KSLV-III, and make three launches in 2030, 2031 and 2032, with the third launch carrying a moon spacecraft aboard.

Experts at home and abroad welcomed the establishment of KASA, expecting the agency to help Korea make a significant leap in the space sector and participate more in international cooperative research projects.

"It is difficult to have international competitiveness in the space industry without technological development in various related fields," Kim Seung-jo, former chief of the Korea Aerospace Research Institute, said. "But Korea has the world-best level of cutting-edge technologies in most of the fields."

He called on KASA to set future-oriented goals for space projects that need patience and passion from a long-term perspective.

Earlier this month, NASA officials also expressed expectations for expanded space cooperation with Seoul following the establishment of KASA, underscoring the importance of Korea's expertise for international space projects.

They also advised KASA to "learn lessons" from failures.

To leverage expertise and experience from the world's top space power, KASA has named John Lee, a retired senior executive from NASA, as its deputy administrator in charge of space missions and policies, the second-highest position at the new institution.

John Lee said he will work to adapt the U.S. space agency's strengths to KASA in a Korean context and align Korea's space projects with international standards.

Meanwhile, the local space industry voiced hopes for KASA, asking it to provide more consistent support to big and small companies, and facilitate their participation in international space projects.

"The country's space projects have been centered around the government and big companies until now, but I hope KASA can also support smaller-sized companies that have been overlooked," Park Jae-pil, the founder of space startup Nara Space, said.

"There are many Korean companies with space technologies that can contribute to international projects, and I believe KASA will open a channel for that," he added.

KASA aims to foster more than 2,000 space-related companies and create about 500,000 new jobs in the field. (Yonhap)
