2024 Toyota Land Cruiser

2024 Toyota Land Cruiser 1958 4dr SUV Exterior

2024 Toyota Land Cruiser Review

toyota cruise

  • Smooth ride and comfortable seats
  • Respectable off-road capability
  • Hybrid powertrain returns good mpg
  • Distinctive, heritage-themed styling
  • Cargo area is small and has a high load floor
  • Long braking distances during panic stops
  • Handling can be a bit ponderous around corners

What's new

  • All-new Land Cruiser for 2024
  • Smaller and less expensive than the last generation
  • Standard 4WD hybrid powertrain good for 326 hp
  • 2024 model kicks off the seventh Land Cruiser generation

Arnold Schwarzenegger's Terminator character is known for its "I'll be back" quip. But you can imagine the Toyota Land Cruiser uttering the same thing after Toyota discontinued it after the 2021 model year. Now the Land Cruiser is crashing through the proverbial police station window for 2024, reborn to be smaller, more agile off-road, and less expensive than it was before. The new 2024 Land Cruiser is related to the similarly new Lexus GX. This midsize SUV seats five passengers and takes its place between the 4Runner and bigger three-row Sequoia within Toyota's lineup of truck-based SUVs. Oh, and there's no longer a V8 under the hood.

Cost to Drive Cost to drive estimates for the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser 1958 4dr SUV 4WD (2.4L 4cyl Turbo gas/electric mild hybrid 8A) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $3.55 per gallon for regular unleaded in North Dakota.

Edmunds spotlight: will we miss the v8.

The V8 is gone and in its place is a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with a hybrid system. The new powertrain makes 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque; and while a turbocharged four-cylinder engine isn't naturally a great fit for a big SUV like the Land Cruiser, it works here. The hybrid system's electric motor complements the engine by providing immediate torque right from a stop, making the entire powertrain feel responsive, even low down in the rev range. It's also much more refined while vastly improving fuel economy, going from the prior version's EPA-estimated 14 mpg in combined driving all the way up to 23 mpg.

Competitors to consider

The Toyota Land Cruiser's closest competitors might be other Toyotas. There's the redesigned 2025 Toyota 4Runner, which is similar in size but less expensive, or the larger three-row Toyota Sequoia. The Lexus GX, which is a more luxe version of the Land Cruiser, is also worth a look. You may also consider a couple of Land Rovers: the stylish Range Rover Velar or the off-road-oriented Defender. Check out our test team's full Expert Rating for more information on the new Land Cruiser.

Edmunds Expert Rating

Performance, fuel economy, which land cruiser does edmunds recommend.

The base 1958 trim is supposed to be a nod to the Land Cruiser's no-nonsense heritage. It's a bit too much of a nod in our opinion. We therefore recommend going for the Land Cruiser's midtier trim, which is just called Land Cruiser. (So is that the Land Cruiser Land Cruiser?) It comes with desirable upgrades such as a bigger center touchscreen, a power-adjustable driver's seat and synthetic leather upholstery. You can keep it at that or get the available Premium package for a more luxurious Land Cruiser.

2024 Toyota Land Cruiser First Impressions

toyota cruise

Arnold Schwarzenegger's Terminator character is known for its "I'll be back" quip. But you can imagine the Toyota Land Cruiser uttering the same thing after Toyota discontinued it after the 2021 model year. Now the Land Cruiser is crashing through the proverbial police station window for 2024, reborn to be smaller, more agile off-road and less expensive than it was before.

The new 2024 Land Cruiser is related to the similarly new Lexus GX . This midsize SUV seats five passengers and will take its place between the smaller 4Runner and bigger three-row Sequoia within Toyota's lineup of truck-based SUVs. Oh, and there's no longer a V8 under a hood. How big of a deal is that? Toyota invited us to test drive its new LC to find out.

All Land Cruisers are powered by a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with a hybrid system and combined the two make 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque. A turbocharged four-cylinder engine, because of its somewhat peaky power delivery, isn't naturally a great fit for a big SUV like the Land Cruiser. However, the hybrid system's electric motor complements the engine by providing immediate torque right from a stop, making the entire powertrain feel responsive, even low down in the rev range.

That hybrid system also adds a whole heap of refinement. There’s no lurching or jumping when coming to a stop or moving away from one. It’s smooth the entire time. Despite now being down four cylinders, the new Land Cruiser feels much quicker than the SUV it replaces — we estimate it a 0-60 mph time of around 6.4 seconds, which is very good for something this size. It's also far more efficient than the old Land Cruiser's 5.7-liter V8. The old eight-cylinder returned a rather dismal 14 mpg in combined city/highway driving according to the EPA, but the new LC gets a substantially better 23 mpg.

You won't be surprised to hear it drives like what it is: a truck-based SUV. Compared to a crossover SUV, it pitches and rolls and dives a lot more if you're driving with some enthusiasm. But among this class of SUVs, the Land Cruiser is actually one of the better-behaved models. The suspension dismisses bumps quickly and regains its composure as opposed to excessively jiggling once you hit bigger bumps or ruts in the road. The Land Cruiser steers more accurately than the Chevrolet Tahoe and other truck-based SUVs in this class, and it brakes smoothly and quickly when needed.

While a Land Cruiser is a multi-purpose machine, hardcore fans of the brand might argue how it does off-road is more important than how it drives on road. We were given time to drive the Land Cruiser off-road, but it's worth noting from the outset that the off-road course Toyota let us play around on was little challenge for the Land Cruiser.

We took it slow on two different off-road courses — the first was craggy and full of rocks and slow 20-degree ascents. We spent most of the time there in 4Lo with the center differential locked and the rear locked for certain obstacles. The other was a slightly faster dirt track where we didn't have to use any of the Land Cruiser's off-road hardware, though using the feature to disconnect the front stabilizer bar did add a little extra comfort over the lumps and bumps.

On both courses driving the Land Cruiser felt akin to taking Shohei Ohtani to a Little League game and asking 8-year-olds to try to strike him out. The LC handled everything with ease, composure, and the same level of comfort we experienced on the road. It's clear this SUV is capable of far more than Toyota was willing to let us get into, and we hope to get one soon to evaluate its true ability against some of its off-road competition.

Despite its blocky appearance, the Land Cruiser is quiet and comfortable inside, even at highway speeds. There's a sense of enveloping calm when you first hop in, and once you get on the road it only grows. There's a confidence and a serenity that only comes through when something has been so thoroughly gone over with engineering polish the way this SUV clearly has.

This is not some new tech-forward design where screens and electronics dominate the experience. All the controls in the Land Cruiser have a solid feel to them and are easy to reach and use without looking. In a world where touch-based controls are becoming the norm, having physical primary controls that you can manipulate on the fly without looking and with gloves on is something we cannot take for granted.

The back seat of the Land Cruiser is spacious, and because of the body's upright proportions, there is plenty of head- and legroom for backseat riders. The Land Cruiser is a two-row-only SUV, though, so those seeking a third-row option will have to look elsewhere.

Toyota hasn't skimped on creature comforts. The Land Cruiser has all the trappings of a modern vehicle, including infotainment and driver aids. Wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration is standard, and there are multiple USB-C ports and a wireless charging pad to help keep your gadgets topped up.

The interior is easy to use and thoughtfully laid out. If you jump over the base 1958 trim level and go for the midlevel Land Cruiser you are granted a bunch of interior niceties. A head-up display, heated and cooled seats, a camera that's been integrated into the rearview mirror, a 12.3-inch infotainment display, and an identically sized instrument panel that's fully customizable. Even though something with a history of being so rugged might not necessarily need all this tech, the Land Cruiser successfully integrates all of it in a way that isn't overwhelming.

All Land Cruisers also come with Toyota's Safety Sense 3.0 system as standard. You get adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assistance, road sign recognition, and automatic high beams as standard.

The 2024 Land Cruiser maintains its off-road ability and legacy while adding a heap of everyday usability. It's still a Land Cruiser, just more complete than ever before.

Toyota’s suv lineup is new and refreshed; which one is right for you.

In the last two years, Toyota has reesigned all of its most beloved and treasured SUVs and added a few to the lineup.

But this wasn’t a straightforward redesign project; the company actually parsed each model and re-tooled it for what customers want most, how it’s best used and to play up the best talents of each. The company, in its mission to innovate hybrid engine technology, also added hybrid engines standard or as an option to each, as well.

The result is that some Toyota SUVs no longer have the same DNA as their predecessors and there are new models that supplement the lineup. Buyers who may have toted their kids around in one model may find that now it’s better for DINKS or empty nesters, but not as ideal for the car seat set.

Each redesigned Toyota features many of the same basics, such as Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 driver assist and safety features, and either optional or standard premium features like Toyota’s new multimedia system and digital driver display. They all have the option of enhanced navigation, voice activated assistance and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and most offer a leather seating option, SofTex leatherette and technology such as head up display and a digital rear view mirror.

And each has a hybrid engine either standard or as an option, though in some cases the hybrid technology is designed to boost the system’s power more than reduce fuel consumption—and some models offer both types of hybrids as well as a standard gas-only engine.

Here’s what each Toyota SUV offers and how to tell which is the right one for you.

Land Cruiser: Formerly a Family Staple, Now It’s All About…Land Cruising

Priced from $55,000-$75,000, this full-size SUV has been retooled with a heritage look inside and out and equipped for full-fledged off-roading, with systems such as crawl control, multi-terrain modes and locking differentials. The Land Cruiser no longer has a 3rd row option, and even if it did, it would be tight, as this is a slightly smaller SUV than it’s predecessor.

The Land Cruiser is still good for small families, even those with kids in car seats, and especially those who camp, overland or tow.

The Toyota Land Cruiser comes in 3 trims: the 1958 base model, Land Cruiser and First Edition. Each carries a 4-cylinder i-Force Max hybrid engine that generates 326 hp designed for increasing power more than mpg; it is estimated to get about 23mpg.

If you’re comparing the Land Cruiser to other SUVs, also check out the Ford Bronco , Land Rover Defender , Kia Telluride X-Pro and Jeep Grand Cherokee.

The 2025 Toyota 4Runner

2025 Toyota 4Runner: The Adventure Continues

The excitement over the redesign of one of the best-selling off-roaders has been at a fever pitch. The redesign of the Toyota 4Runner stayed pretty true to its roots as a rugged and ready SUV, adding new engines and two new models to enhance the reputation.

For 2025 the 4Runner will be offered in a new Platinum trim, the top of the line model, and Trailhunter, for off-road trail riding. Toyota also expanded the TRD line to include TRD Sport, TRD Sport Premium, TRD Off Road and TRD Off-Road Premium. Each has a 4-cylinder turbo engine that generates 278 hp, but buyers can opt for the more powerful i-Force Max hybrid engine that generates 326 hp.

Also true to its past, the 4Runner has a 3rd row option, but only in the SR5 and the Limited gas-powered models. It’s not offered in any of the other models or in any of the hybrids. And, the 4Runner is offered in front wheel drive or all wheel drive in most trims, as it was in past editions.

The 4Runner’s interior is fresh but rugged with details carried over from the redesigned Toyota Tacoma, including the center console, grab bars and storage cubbies, as well as off-road technology. This isn’t a bad thing at all; the 4Runner was give a modern, adventure-ready feel.

2024 Toyota Sequoia: For the Family That Off-Roads Together

The Toyota Sequoia, which made its debut in 2022 just after the introduction of its fraternal twin, the Toyota Tundra full-size pickup, on which it is based.

The Sequoia, priced from about $61,000-$81,000, is lovable for all the space and capability it offers: it has seating for up to 8, it can tow up to 9,520 lbs. and it has a full-fledged four wheel drive system for true off-roading, enhanced in the TRD Pro trim. It’s also filled with creature comforts such as a panoramic sunroof, center row captains chairs and running boards.

The Sequoia carries Toyota’s i-Force Max V6 turbo hybrid engine which generates 437 HP and gets about 22 mpg. Most models come standard with rear wheel drive and can be upgraded to four wheel drive for about $3,000.

While the Toyota Sequoia has 3 rows, configuring kids car seats can be a challenge because center row seats are the tumble-forward type, so to access the 3rd row a child car seat can’t be installed in that seat. Also, there are only two full LATCH sets in the center row and none in the 3rd row, so kids car seats must be seat-belt installed.

Shopping Sequoia’s competitors? Look at the Chevrolet Tahoe , Ford Expedition , Jeep Wagoneer , Nissan Armada , GMC Yukon .

All-new, three-row 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander is introduced during world premiere event at Chicago ... [+] Auto Show on February 8, 2023 in Chicago, Illinois (Photo by KAMIL KRZACZYNSKI/AFP via Getty Images)

Toyota Grand Highlander: The Full-size SUV We Didn’t Know We Needed

This one is completely new to the lineup and sorely needed: The Grand Highlander, priced from $43K-$58K, seats six or seven passengers, has a very spacious cabin and a true full-sized third row and has slide-and-tilt center row seats for easy third row access, even if kids car seats are installed.

To accommodate families at a variety of price points, Toyota also several engine options: a 4-cylinder turbo gas-powered engine that generates 265 hp, a 4-cylinder hybrid that puts out 245 hp (and gets 35 mpg) and for more power, an i-Force Max hybrid that produces 362 hp. All trims are available in all wheel drive have multiple drive modes including sport, eco, normal and snow; all wheel drive models add sand/mud/rock drive modes.

Interior options span from affordable to opulent, with leatherette or leather seating, a panoramic sun roof and more. And it the third row is designed for full time use; it’s spacious and has air vents, cup holders and USB ports so everyone will be happy.

If you’re shopping the whole category, look at the Jeep Grand Cherokee L , GMC Acadia , Buick Enclave , Lexus TX , Chevrolet Traverse , Kia Telluride , Hyundai Palisade , Honda Pilot , Mazda CX-90 .

The 2024 Toyota Highlander

Toyota Highlander: The Original Hybrid SUV

This SUV is the original Toyota family crossover SUV and the first to have a hybrid powertrain. Highlander, while considered a compact SUV, offers three rows of seating for 7 or 8 passengers. Priced from $39,000, it continues to be nicely outfitted with features and options and buyers can choose from a 4-cylinder hybrid powertrain that gets 35 mpg and generates 243 hp, or a 4-cylinder turbo that generates 265 hp and gets 25 mpg. It's available in front or all wheel drive and has multi-terrain drive modes.

With its smaller size the third row might be better considered a “convenience row” for smaller passengers or occasional use. Still, kids car seats fit nicely thanks to sliding second row seats. Most models feature center row captains chairs for easy third row access, but those who want a center row bench will find it in the entry level LE and XLE models.

The Toyota Highlander competes agains the Ford Explorer , Nissan Pathfinder , Kia Telluride , Hyundai Palisade , Honda Pilot , Mazda CX-90 .

2023 Toyota RAV4

Toyota RAV4: Toyota’s Most Popular SUV

This is the most popular Toyota in the lineup and the best selling SUV overall, and for good reason: it’s good at everything it does and offers a trim for every taste. Priced from about $28,000 to about $47,000, the Toyota RAV4 has seating for 5 and offers 3 engine options: A gas-powered 4-cylinder that generates 203 hp and gets 30 mpg; a 4-cylinder Prime hybrid that puts out 219 hp and that gets 37 mpg; and a plug-in hybrid with an all electric range of 42 miles, 302 hp and hybrid fuel economy of 38 mpg.

And then, trim options range from simple to sporty: entry-level LE, XLE, Premium, Adventure, TRD Off-Road, Limited and Woodland Edition (the RAV4 Prime plug-in is only available in SE and XSE trims). Most trims offer the choice of front or all wheel drive, and multiple drive modes; all wheel drive models have multi-terrain select drive modes for off-roading or trail driving.

For many buyers, the magic of the RAV4 is its versatility for adventure. It takes inspiration from Toyota’s TRD racing division, which is where the other SUVs an pickups in the family get their capability. While the RAV4 probably isn’t the one you’d take to climb rocks in Moab, it’s completely capable for most trails and many challenges.

RAV4’s compeitors include the Subaru Outback , Nissan Rogue , Honda CR-V , Mazda CX-50 , Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage .

The First Ever 2025 Crown Signia Crossover SUV

The Crown Signia plays to Toyota fans who love the conveniences and reliability of the brand but want more space and luxury. Taking a cue from its sibling the Crown sedan, Toyota incorporated many of its features to offer an SUV version of the sedan. It also replaces the elegant but not so successful Venza crossover.

Crown is filled with luxe features and powered by a 4-cylinder hybrid engine that delivers 243 hp and is estimated to get 36 mpg and is available in only two trims: XLE and Limited. Pricing also hasn’t been announced, but taking a cue from the Crown, which is priced from $41,000 -$53,000, it will likely be priced in the the low $45,000-$55,000 range.

Crown Signia shoppers should also look at the BMW X1, Lexus NX , Lexus RX , Infiniti QX50 , Genesis GV70 , Mazda CX-50 .

2024 Corolla Cross: A Classic Hatchback, Now An SUV

This sassy little SUV takes its spirit from the Corolla hatchback, loved for its ease of ownership and driving. It’s generously proportioned for a compact SUV and nicely appointed inside for a budget crossover.

There are two engine options to choose from: The gas-powered 4-cylinder that generates 169 hp and gets 33 mpg, and a 4-cylinder hybrid that generates 196 hp and gets about 45 mpg. Priced from $23,000- $31,000, there are 7 models to choose from, 4 of them with the hybrid engine and all of them with all wheel drive, which is standard.

The Toyota Corolla Cross competes with the Subaru Crosstrek , Honda HR-V , Hyundai Kona , Chevrolet Trax , Kia Seltos , Nissan Kicks .

Toyota’s many options offer ways for customers to trade up or down within its family of SUVs–a great way to keep loyal customers happy. But don’t expect Toyota’s offerings to end there; the company’s list of SUVs is poised only to grow in the coming months and years.

  • The Toyota Land Cruiser 10th Victory Edition features black accents and motorsport-inspired decals.
  • It celebrates Toyota’s 10 consecutive victories at the production category of Dakar Rally.
  • The special edition is exclusively available in the United Arab Emirates.

Toyota has introduced a new special edition of the Land Cruiser J300 (not to be confused with our 250 series model) in the United Arab Emirates, celebrating their 10th consecutive victories at the Dakar Rally.

Dubbed the Land Cruiser 10th Victory Edition, this model features dark accents complemented by matching 18-inch alloy wheels and rally-inspired stickers. It is exclusively available with a gasoline V6 powertrain.

Review: 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser Is The 4-Runner For Grown Ups

The special trim is derived from the Land Cruiser 300 Black Edition, already available in the UAE. While maintaining elements such as the black-finished grille, skid plate, and mud flaps from the Black Edition, the new version introduces a distinctive set of black and gray decals. These decals adorn the profile, extending to the rear bumper, paying homage to the Land Cruiser’s motorsports legacy.

Another standout feature is the distinct set of black 18-inch alloy wheels, fitted with grippy 285/60R18 rubber tires. A closer look reveals the red-finished recovery points at the front which are a nice touch.

However, it may have been more fitting if the 10th Victory Edition were based on the Land Cruiser GR Sport rather than the entry-level model. This would have allowed it to benefit from the rugged body kit and the more sophisticated suspension setup. Notably, the GR Sport variant is the Land Cruiser that propelled Toyota to its most recent victory at the Dakar Rally .

Here we should note that Toyota’s 10 consecutive wins were at the production car category, rather than in the overall standings. The company took home the title in the 2019, 2022 and 2023 editions of the Dakar Rally with specially-prepared versions of the Toyota Hilux pickup.

Toyota Land Cruiser 300 Gets A Rally-Inspired Special Edition

Unlike the diesel-powered Land Cruiser GR Sport that won in Dakar, the 10th Victory Edition is exclusively available with a gasoline engine. The turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 produces 409 hp (305 kW / 415 PS), as in the rest of the Land Cruiser J300 lineup in the region. Power is transmitted to all four wheels via a 10-speed automatic gearbox and Toyota’s 4WD system.

Inside the cabin, familiar features include a standard 9-inch infotainment display, tri-zone climate control, wood grain accents, fabric upholstery for the seats, and a leather steering wheel.

The Toyota Land Cruiser 10th Victory Edition is exclusively available in the United Arab Emirates, priced at AED 319,900 ($87,095). This price matches that of the Black Edition trim it is based on and is lower than the flagship Land Cruiser GR Sport, which retails for AED 412,900 ($112,415) in the same market.

Someone Is Already Trying To Flip A 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser

H ere we are again , folks. Just when things seem to be calming down with the car market, someone lets their bank account get the better of them and starts things up again. The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser just started arriving at dealers across the country a month or so ago. I don’t even think I’ve even seen one on the road. And yet someone is already trying to flip one on Bring A Trailer .

A seller has listed a ‘24 Land Cruiser First Edition on Bring A Trailer. Toyota has planned a run of 5,000 First Editions for the 2024 model year, and it’s currently the most luxurious model you can buy. It boasts features like special 18-inch wheels, round LED headlights and a 14-speaker JBL audio system. All this can be yours for a $74,950 MSRP . You won’t pay that at dealers right now, of course.

Of the 550 Land Cruiser First Editions I was able to find for sale across the country right now, just over 200 were marked up over $80,000 or more.

The seller on BaT must be one of those buyers who paid a markup. What other reason could there be for wanting to get rid of one of the biggest automotive intros of the year? Whoever purchased this seemed to have no intention of using it, either, as the description says it only has 11 miles on the odometer. What makes this all the more interesting is that the seller currently has a lien on the Land Cruiser; they mention in the comments that it’s been leased through Toyota Financial.

Currently there are seven days left, and bidding sits at just $55,555. Like someone mentioned in the comments, this will be a good auction to watch as it could be an interesting economic indicator. Will people be willing to essentially reimburse the seller on whatever price they paid or meet whatever reserve they’ve set? If this thing fails to go for less than even the original MSRP it’ll be a failure and also a sign that some may be over the era of overpaying for something someone else already overpaid for.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Keywords: Tuva, Early Iron Age, early Scythian period, Aldy-Bel culture, barrow, burial in the coffin, mummy, full genome sequencing, aDNA
