Ultimate Javea Tourist Guide: BEST Things to Do & See 2024

Table of Contents

Javea (also known as Xàbia) is a gem of a town situated on the Northern Costa Blanca.

It’s rugged coastline is indented with secluded coves and sandy beaches. These hidden caves and bays were once used by pirates and smugglers in the Middle Ages but are now used by sunbathers, snorklers and scuba divers.

Javea is situated on the most easterly point of mainland Spain about 100 kms from Valencia and 90 kms from Alicante. Options to getting to Javea are covered on our  airport transfers page .

Javea has been voted environmentally near perfect by the World Health Organisation and boasts 320 days of sunshine a year.

New building developments in Javea are subject to height restrictions which mean there are no high-rise buildings unlike in other Costa Blanca towns such as Calpe or Benidorm .

The locals are proud to speak not the most common type of Spanish (Castellano) but Valencian (Valenciano) which is very similar but not the same as Catalan and this is spoken not just in Javea but in the whole Valencian region. This is why you see the local word for Javea which is Xàbia.

Many would argue Javea is the finest place on the whole Costa Blanca. We wouldn’t argue too strongly with this.

Javea, or Xabia as the locals call it, is split into three distinct areas.

Javea Old Town (Xabia Pueblo)

There is the Old Town of Javea where you can wander down ancient narrow streets and visit the local market on a Thursday. Built with original Tosca sandstone it’s rich in medieval history.

The Gothic fortified church of San Bartolome dominates the centre of Javea’s town. This building dates back to the 15th century. At the side of the church is a beautiful building which houses the indoor market where you can buy local fresh produce daily.

Javea (Xabia)

The Port of Javea (Xabia Puerto)

Many people’s favourite area of Javea this has a fascinating charm factor hard to define. Whitewashed houses surround the bay. Watch the fishermen bring in their fresh catches or watch the sailing boats set off from the marina. Eat at the fantastic seafood restaurants.

There are also many good shops, bars and cafes – it’s bustling with activity. The Port area of Javea has a real Spanish feel, this is an area where locals live and work in harmony with the tourist elements. It is a lively bustling area with many shops, cafes, bars and restaurants.

The landmark of the Port area is the church of Our Lady of Loreto with a roof which imitates the hull of a ship.

The Beach of Javea (Playa El Arenal)

The bustling Arenal area is basically the sandy blue flag beach which is surrounded by shops, bars and restaurants such as the renowned Los Remos or La Boheme.

El-Arenal-beach-Javea

During the evening in the summer there are various stalls here selling a variety of handmade crafts. Many of the bars have live music and there are several discotheques.

Try the Platino bar for entertainment such as Adam King singing live on most Saturdays.

The most popular bar is known as Champagne which has been renamed Jalousie.

Set off the beach is the popular Irish Bar An Shebeen.

The Arenal beach area is the place to enjoy the  nightlife which although relatively quiet and limited does have it’s lively spots such as the nightclub Achill.

The Arenal is very good for families. The beach is large and very wide. The water is very shallow and calm as it is in a sheltered bay. You can easily sit in a cafe or bar and be able to see your children. Generally Spain is very family-orientated and you can feel much more relaxed about your kids safety than you would anywhere else.

This is the place where you can eat tapas, paella but also fish and chips and English breakfast. The great thing about Javea is the choice of the three very different parts. It’s almost like visiting a theme park and entering different worlds!

In the centre of these three areas are plenty of apartment blocks of which many are for rental. Surrounding Javea are beautiful green hills peppered with very expensive villas. These can make a great choice for a holiday if there are a few people. They can work out very cheap per person but you can spoil yourself as many of them are the definition of luxury – palm trees, swimming pools, entrance gates, jacuzzis etc.

Javea History

The streets in the old town of Javea are worth exploring with the fortified Gothic church (San Bartolome) and a very good museum (Museo Etnografico ‘Soler Blasco’) which explains the history of the coast from Palaeolithic times through Iberian, Roman and Medieval times.

In 1244, King Jamie claimed Javea back from the Moors. In the 14th century, King Jamie II built a further fortress and the town’s walls along the streets of Maria Gallard, Primicies, Major and Roques.

In the 15th century an economic recovery with an increase in population began. This improvement of wealth is reflected in building habits with many new streets built and the city gates constructed.

Javea’s population significantly increased and drew the attention of the Barbarians. As a consequence, fortresses and churches were built, including the church Eglesia de Sant Bertomeu (San Bartolome).

During the early 1500’s plague was prevalent in Javea and the town’s hospital was built. All that is now left of this hospital is the Capella de Santa Anna.

In the 18th century Javea participated in the succession war on the side of the Bourbon and gained a number of privileges. In addition to numerous honorary titles, Javea received permission to build a harbour from which it was able to export fruit to other countries. A trade which began with raisins and then extended to wheat, grapes, bread and olives.

From the second half of the 19th century onwards, the manufacturing process and export of raisins became the major industry.

What are the Miradors of Javea?

The miradors of Javea are 14 designated, strategic viewpoints that show spectacular views of Javea. The miradors of Javea are clearly signposted and each one has been carefully selected due to it’s amazing views. The concept is that each one represents an imaginary window through which you see the most fantastic views.

Javea’s miradors are all along the coastline of Javea and the first mirador is to the north of Javea at Cap San Antonio where the lighthouse is.

The miradors continue along the coastline to the 14th mirador to the south of Javea which is just around the corner from Javea’s Granadella beach.

There is no cost to view each mirador. The views from each mirador are easily amongst some of the very best views the Costa Blanca has to offer. You can have a great day’s adventure trying to find each one.

Below we have a photo of the mirador map at La Granadella.

Population of Javea

Javea has a huge expat population, mainly English but also a substantial German contingent. Javea is a very cosmopolitan and a great place to move to or invest in and the expat population means there is a good opportunity to find a job in this part of Spain.

It is very much a place where you can feel you are in Spain but where you can feel reminders of home. There are many English and German supermarkets, lots of clubs and societies and people who speak your language.

Just outside of Javea and Benitachell. A relatively small 9 hole golf course. The two additional putting greens and the twenty bay driving range offer enough room to practice your golf swing.

I first went to javea in 1985 when my parents brought an apartment next to the tennis club. I continued going there for holidays for around 5 years and loved the un spoilt Spanish vibe the are had. My wife and I visited javea 5 years ago and we both absolutely loved the place even though it had trebled in size compared to the late 80s. In 2015 we brought our own 3 bed Casa 10 minutes walk from the Arenal, we spend most of our time in the port which has a real Spanish community feel about it. The restaurant are excellent with a great choice including Piri Piri on the front which is fantastic: we try to go at least 5 times a year and never get board or lost for things to do.

I lived in Jávea between October 1972 and February 1978; when my horrible father kicked me out of the so – called family home. In those days, they only had two discotheques, El Caracol, ( shaped like a snail ); and El Moli Blanc. Or as I refer to it, The White Windmill. The name of the second night club comes from the local dialect, Valenciano, spoken all across the Costa Blanca. As a young boy, growing up down there, this made it very difficult for me to fully comprehend what the locals were saying, even if they spoke in front of me in pure Spanish, ( Castellano ). It was only because of the lack of the dialect in the school there, that I was able to learn the language properly, and, despite having forgotten a few words, I can still hold a decent conversation in Spanish. Bars, restaurants, etc on the sea front were non existent in my day. There were a few, along with the local shops, underneath the apartment complex, Apartamentos L’Ancora. Most of the eateries those days, were in the old part of town. One big local tourist attraction nearby, runs from Denia to Benidorm, and is the Limón express train service. It is a con! They tell you that Champaign is served, when it is actually, just fizzy wine. Probably wine diluted with fizzy water. Javea’s best known export? David Ferrer. He learnt his trade on the local tennis courts there. The club is open to all, at a reasonable price, from what I can recall. Other attractions nearby? A go kart track, and on the premises, is a crazy golf course, a quad bike track, and a remote control boat pond. The more secluded areas of Jávea, are Adsubia and Cabo de San Martin. CM116 is the villa that I lived in for a while, with two dragons. One was Ted Evans, the control freak , the other was my so called step mother, Margaret Romaine. From early 1973 until the middle of 1975; I attended the local school there. I was then posted off to the nearest boarding school, Lope de Vega, in Benidorm. In February of 1978, not even 15 at the time, the dragon and her husband, Ted Evans, decided to ship me back to England. So there you have it folks! A little bit about the town of Jávea, and a little bit about me, the author of this article. One other point of beauty, is if you go past the right hand turning that becomes Cabo de San Martin, you come to Cabo de San Antonio. Jávea also has a marina, and is well renowned for fishing for mussels, to put in the paellas. It also has a church that looks a bit like Noah’s Ark, after it landed there, and turned to stone 2000 years later. From the ledge on the side of Mount Montgo, is where they set off fireworks on Epiphany night, while on three separate trawlers, the wise men come into Jávea, from where they go to the old part of town, and give out the presents to the children. The downside of that ? They have to return to school the next day!

Hi, My parents and I recently moved to Javea/Xabia. Currently, I’m looking for Pet Sitting Jobs. I have over 20 years experience taking care of dogs that are under 45 kg’s. I can feed the dogs, take them on about a 4 kilometer walk, bath the dogs, and keep them entertained. I’m used to taking care of no more than 2 dogs at a time. The pet owners that I’ve worked with always had a list of feeding times, medications that the dogs had to take/what time, all the vaccines that the dogs have, the dogs have been microchipped, the pets have their tags (rabies tag, microchip tag, a tag with the dogs name/address/and an emergency phone number), and all the pets have gone through behavioral training. Plus, all the pets have had their monthly flea and tick medication. The pet owners have usually given me about 15 euros an hour every time I came to take care of their pets. I also take care of cats and hamsters. Please send an e mail to [email protected] to get in touch with me for pet sitting.

The Arenal beach area is the place to enjoy the nightlife which although relatively quiet and limited does have it’s lively spots such as the nightclub Achill. It’s a great place to walk along the promenade in the evening. It’s very touristy obviously and is the least Spanish part of Javea but nevertheless it is a crucial part.

English Grammar : its = belonging to it; it’s = it is .

Alicante - Alacant

Region of Valencia

Located between the capes of San Antonio and Nao, Jávea is one of the most important tourist destinations on the Costa Blanca.

The historic quarter, located two kilometres away from the coastline, preserves a beautiful architecture, with emblematic monuments such as the church of San Bartolomé , the city's neuralgic centre. One of the main attractions of this region is its coastline. No less than twenty kilometres of sands and hidden coves where visitors can enjoy a swim and a wide variety of water sports.

From Cape Nao to Granadella Cove, Jávea offers visitors twenty kilometres of beaches and coves, ideal to enjoy the sun, the sea and water sports. This town on the Alicante Costa Blanca shows its more tourist-related side around the area of the harbour. In addition to a wide range of accommodation, restaurants and recreational activities, in the harbour visitors can enjoy all types of water activities, such as sailing and windsurfing or a boat trip to Denia . The beach of El Arenal is one of the most emblematic on the coast of Jávea. In this place, next to the Fontana Canal, sits the Parador de Turismo “ Costa Blanca ” (Inn), at a privileged location only a few metres away from the beach. Between the islands of Portixol and Descubridor is one of the most beautiful sections of the coastline. Crystal waters and a gorgeous seabed make this the ideal setting for scuba diving. This water sport is also popular at Granadella Cove which is, with its fine, golden sand, another attractive spot in the coast of Jávea.

Located on a plain, at the foot of the Montgó Massif, the historic quarter of Jávea was erected inland, around the fortified church of San Bartolomé , a beautiful Isabelline Gothic building made to defend the city against pirate attacks. On the streets of the historic quarter, visitors will be amazed at the local architecture, the grilles on the windows of housesand the lintels of "coarse" stone. Another must in the journey around the city centre is the Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum , where you can learn about the history of the town. While, on the harbour, it is worth visiting the church Our Lady of Loreto , which resembles the keel of a ship.

Culture, gastronomy and the outskirts

Jávea bases its gastronomy on typical Mediterranean foods . As is common to the rest of the Valencian towns, the most popular dish is rice. Paella is perhaps the most widely-known recipe, which is prepared here with beans and turnips or baked. The fish from this region is served both stewed or fried, as well as in soup. Garlic and oil are the main ingredients of the emblematic sauce salsa ali-oli , served to accompany numerous dishes. Almonds, raisins, figs and oranges are the most typical fruits of this region and are usually included in dessert recipes. Almond cake, turrónand ice cream are among the most tempting. To go with it, Jávea offers wines with the label Designation of Origin - Alicante, misteleta (sweet wine) and horchata (a soft drink made with tiger nuts). Jávea celebrates the holiday of the Virgin of Carmen on the 16th of July. A few days later, the weekend before last, the Moors and Christians festival takes place. The outskirts of Jávea offer endless possibilities. The lighthouses and Cabo de San Antonio Marine Nature Reserve are the destinations of excellent excursions for nature lovers. The visit may continue to the Montgó Nature Reserve , where the outline of the mountains dives into the Mediterranean, creating spectacular cliffs. It is also possible to visit the attractive town of Denia , the capital of the Marina Alta region. Teulada rises on the other side of Cape Nao. In addition, next to Peñón de Ifach Nature Reserve is the town of Calpe , a harmonious place that has managed to combine the preservation of its monumental heritage with touristic infrastructures. Another interesting monumental town in the middle of the Costa Blanca is Villajoyosa , the capital of the Marina Baja region. Across Sierra de Aitana, the northern inland region of the province awaits, offering a journey through Cocentaina , an important medieval town, with tiled houses and Arab streets. The mountains of Alicante conceal the rough outline of Carracal de la Font Roja Nature Reserve on the northern side, as well as the town of Alcoi, whose medieval historic quarter celebrates the festivity of "Moors and Christians" every year, declared of International Tourist Interest .

15 Best Things to Do in Jávea (Spain)

Located on the Costa Blanca between Valencia and Alicante , Jávea fits is a model Mediterranean beach destination.

The resort has 20 kilometres of coastline, with a wide choice of beaches, like the sandy bay at El Arenal or heavenly coves such as La Granadella.

Away from the coast is an historic centre to wander through, and there are endless opportunities to escape to the wilderness all around: Jávea is bookended by two soaring headlands, and all the while the hulking mass of the Montgó Massif will catch the eye of anyone in need of adventure.

Lets have a look at the best things to do in Javea :

1. Arenal Beach

Arenal Beach

Many people arriving in Jávea will stop at this beach and go nowhere else for a few days.

Playa de Arenal wins the Blue Flag year after year, and is also the only completely sandy beach in the resort.

It’s almost half a kilometre in length and gains the award for its meticulous standards of cleanliness and possession almost every amenity you could wish for.

Lifeguards are here throughout the summer, there are sports facilities, children’s playgrounds and a host of places to eat at the promenade behind, which we’ll come to next.

2. Arenal Waterfront

Javea Promenade

Tracing the beachfront next to Avenida de la Libertad is an exceptional shopping and dining district.

The beachside is almost totally pedestrianised and very much a family place, with locals out jogging, walking their dogs and stopping by at ice cream parlours or cafes for a chat with friends.

In the evening there’s a real urban bustle here: You can call in at one of the many bars for pre-dinner drinks, and of course the selection of restaurants is part of the appeal.

Come for Spanish classics like tapas or paella, or American-style fast food, pizza or Chinese.

3. Historic Centre

Old Town, Javea

The oldest area in Jávea was once enclosed by walls, and is set some way in from the coast, surrounding the Town Hall (Ayuntamiento). You can still spot remnants of these defences, such as at En Cairat.

Over time the population spilled out, and there was no need for any fortifications, but you’ll know you’re in the old part of the town because the streets will start to taper and follow an irregular layout that has survived since the middle ages.

The oldest houses and palaces are gorgeous, blending whitewashed walls with the local golden “tosca” sandstone.

4. San-Bartolomé-Church

San-Bartolomé-Church

One monument composed almost entirely of the distinctive local sandstone is this 16th-century church constructed in the Valencian gothic style.

This rock was quarried at Cabo San Antonio, the promontory just to the north of Jávea.

The church was constructed when Corsairs were a constant threat to coastal towns, which explains its tough, military appearance: There are battlements on top and you can even make out the loopholes for guns, as this was a place of refuge during attacks when people would often be captured as slaves.

5. Playa de la Granadella

Playa de la Granadella

Another Blue Flag beach is this cove, 130 metres long and hidden between two rugged headlands.

These help keep the sea currents and winds away, so the water could hardly be calmer and clearer.

The sea’s transparency attracts water sports enthusiasts, who use Grandella as the entry point for snorkelling and scuba diving.

There’s also a floating platform during peak season, great for youngsters who will have no difficulty swimming in these shallow and tranquil waters.

The beach itself is gravel, but fortunately sun loungers can be hired all through the summer.

6. Montgó Natural Park

Montgó Natural Park

This gargantuan rock has a constant presence in Jávea, rising to 753 metres just to the northwest of the town.

The summit is actually a lot more achievable than its fearsome grey limestone stone cliffs make it seem.

You can take the CV-736 road towards Dénia, parking by Les Planes Campo de Tiro.

You won’t need any climbing equipment, just a good pair of trail shoes, as the path zigzags quite gently for most of the slope.

It’s only when you get near the top that you may have to scrabble over some scree and gravel.

And once there you can take a seat and look down from the formidable landform at the bay and all its now tiny landmarks.

7. Cabo de la Nao

Cabo de la Nao

The southern edge of the bay is bounded by this colossal headland 120 metres above the water.

It’s the easternmost point in the Community of Valencia and there are a few vantage points where you can get photos and vistas that stretch out to the Balearic Islands.

There are also three restaurants on the cape, each with outdoor terraces blessed with these incredible panoramas.

On summer days you can pick up a snack or cold drink from the kiosk next to the lookout.

8. Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum

Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum

Jávea’s museum occupies one of its most significant civic buildings, La Casa-Palacio de Antoni Banyuls, built in the early-1600s.

Antoni Banyuls was the royal butler of King Felipe II and his residence has a captivating facade made from Jávea’s local sandstone.

The interior was renovated in the 1800s, but the original tiles remain, and are well worth your attention in Room VI. The top floor is an exciting exhibit of items recovered from the waters in the bay of Jávea including ancient amphorae and more recent cannonballs.

Below you can learn about the various old trades in the town, with a forge, farm equipment and traditional folk costume.

9. Cabo San Antonio

Cabo San Antonio

Marking the northern limit of the Bay of Jávea is this headland with one of the most complete views of the area, including Arenal Beach, back to the monumental Montgó and down to Cabo de la Nao.

If you’re visiting Jávea with kids you can drive up the CV-7362, which leads right up to the lighthouse where there’s a parking area.

Bring a picnic and bask in the scenery; on a clear day you can even see out to Ibiza.

If you’re an outdoorsy type then there’s nothing to stop you getting here on foot up the steep, scrubby hillsides from the port.

10. Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Loreto

Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Loreto

Clashing with the white buildings in the portside Duanes de la Mar neighbourhood is this 1967 modern church built with concrete and designed to evoke seafaring.

It’s a piece of daring avant-garde design, relatively rare for religious buildings in Spain.

The church is without corners and has an oval floor, with bare walls that culminate in a ring of skylights.

Outside there are 12 concrete buttresses supporting the main structure, one for each of the apostles.

You have to go inside to feel the church’s ghostly beauty, where fishermen’s wives would pray for their husbands’ safe return.

Gaze up at the ceiling, which is made with strips of red pine and resembles the keel of a sailboat.

11. Cruz del Portixol

Cruz del Portixol

Portixol is a small island preserved as a natural park just up from Cabo de la Nao.

You’ll have the perfect panorama of this pine-topped outcrop from the Mirador de Cruz del Portixol, a viewing platform just back from a limestone headland, and also the nexus point for a number of walking trails.

You could stop for a moment to take a photo and contemplate the scenery before making your way to the edge of the headland or taking a walk through the coastal pine forests to any of a handful of sheltered coves close by.

SL CV 97

The town is proud of its natural scenery, and if you visit the local tourist board’s website you can download pdfs of a range of hikes.

All have trailheads that are easy to get to, and the trails are carefully marked.

There’s a fabulous one, the SL CV 97, that leads you from the Crux del Portixol down through forest to the tranquil Cala Barraca.

You can also get hold of a calendar of guided walks, on which you’ll be given a local perspective on the nature and history of the area.

13. Water Sports

Javea Jetski Rental

Jávea is a kind of Atlantis for water sports enthusiasts, to the point where it’s easier to list the activities that aren’t available! All along the 20 kilometre coastline are locally-run companies specialising in a different activity.

So in the Puerto Deportivo for instance you’ll have sailing charters and motor boat rentals.

Around the more sheltered coves like Granadellla you can get hold of snorkelling equipment, hire a kayak or give paddle surfing a go.

The more open beaches are great for windsurfing and kite-boarding and for these sports you’ve got the Wind Center right on Avenida del Mediterráneo.

14. Other Outdoor Activities

Miradores de Xàbia

As you’ve seen, thanks to the steep terrain Jávea has a whole series of miradors (panoramic lookouts), and the most enjoyable way to get to them is on two wheels on the Miradores de Xàbia route.

Once again, the local tourist board can help you plot all sorts of other courses, and you’ll never have to spend a lot of time on the roads.

There’s also a nine-hole golf course, Club de Golf Jávea with very reasonable green fees of just €30 for a round.

And besides all this you’ve got mini-golf courses for kids and the go-karting track, Karting Laguna.

15. Local Food and Drink

Paella

You’re in the Valencian Community in Jávea, and the plump rice from this region is the basis for a lot of fantastic dishes.

Paella is obviously the most famous, but the interesting thing is that there are lots of little inflections depending on where you are.

Down here in Jávea the traditional way to make it is with beans or turnips, but of course more familiar seafood versions are prepared everywhere.

Nuts of all varieties are grown in the countryside, including tiger nuts, which are the main ingredient in the tasty and refreshing soft drink, horchata.

And when you order tapas, you’ll often get a side aioli for dipping: This delicious garlic sauce goes with pretty much anything.

Located on the Costa Blanca in Spain, between Alicante and Valencia, you’ll find Javea (also called Xàbia), a one-of-a-kind Mediterranean beach vacation spot.

With over 20km of coastline surrounding the town and plenty of fun things to do, Javea is the perfect spot for your summer holiday!

Whether you prefer the sandy beach at Playa de Arenal or the coves at La Granadella, it’s safe to say you’ll spend a tonne of time on the beach in Javea.

I spent a few months living in Denia , a town just a short drive away from Javea, so I had the pleasure to visit it a couple of times. What I found was a charming small town with knockout beaches and a few fun things to do to keep you entertained.

So, if you’re considering a trip to Javea, this travel guide will cover everything you need to know to have a wonderful trip!

Javea or Xàbia?

what to do in xabia spain

Is the name for this beautiful seaside town Javea or Xàbia?

Actually, it’s both.

The truth is this town has two spoken languages. Javea is the official Spanish name used on official documents, signage, and internationally. The Valencia region where Javea/Xàbia lives has its own language called Valenciano, which most locals speak in addition to Spanish. Xábia is the name of the town in the local language, Valenciano.

While strolling around the town, you might see both Xábia and Javea on road signs and documentation. That’s because, in 2015, a Royal Decree was put in place that required that written signs/signals were required to be expressed in the official Spanish language of the state.

Like any town with local pride, many Valencians may go out of their way to ensure the town is known as only Xábia.

It is possible to use the names interchangeably. While the locals prefer Xàbia, Javea is the name known more internationally. Be prepared to see (and use) both while you’re visiting this wonderful town!

Things to Do in Javea/Xábia

Javea old town (xàbia pueblo).

tourist map javea

The Old Town of Javea is not far from the oceanfront and is the ideal location for exploring cute shops, character-filled streets, and alleyways. Wandering through this history-filled town you’ll enjoy the asymmetrical layout that has survived since the middle ages.

Standing since the 14th century, the oldest area of the town was once enclosed by walls to protect it against pirates. If you pay close enough attention, you’ll notice remnants of the walls as you wander through town.

In addition to enjoying the winding streets, the 14th century San Bartolomé Church is an excellent stop if you’re a gothic architecture fan. If you look close enough at the building, you can see bullet holes from the Spanish Civil War.

Around the church, you’ll find a small plaza with outdoor cafes and tapas bars if you’re hungry from all of your walking around.

There is also an indoor market near the church, which contains a bunch of fresh food. This fresh market is filled with local fish from Javea port, vegetables, fruits, fresh-baked bread, and other tasty goodies.

The indoor market is also the perfect thing to do in Javea when it rains, but siesta hours are strictly observed here.

The Port of Javea (Xàbia Puerto)

Javea Port, one of the best tourist destinations in Xabia Spain

Javea Port is a lively area of town that boasts many tapas bars, shops, and restaurants. Visitors love the La Grava pebble beach along the promenade, which is lined with beautiful palm trees. In addition, the promenade features beautiful sculptures that change every year.

This very active Javea Port still functions as a fishing port but nowadays yachts also moor in the same area. The main reason for tourists to visit here, though, is for the nearby market where the fishermen sell their catch of the day. You won’t find any fish fresher than these!

Taking a walk around the Javea Port is super peaceful, with the fresh sea air and the smell of fresh food cooking adding to its atmosphere.

The Beach of Javea (Playa El Arenal)

Best beaches in Javia, Spain

The main beach in Javea, Playa El Arenal, is a horseshoe-shaped beach 480 metres in length and the only sandy beach in the area. The beach is awarded the Blue Flag every year and is the most frequented in the region.

A beautiful promenade surrounding the beach is home to cafes, restaurants, and entertainment venues to liven up both the day and night. Grab a coffee after a swim or grab a cerveza with friends after playing volleyball. It’s easy to spend the whole day here!

Playa de La Granadella

Best things to do in Javea, Spain

La Granadella is often called the crown jewel of the coast of Javea. This 160 metre long beach has been awarded Blue Flag status more than once for its crystal waters and unspeakable beauty.

With sapphire-blue waters, Playa de La Granadella is the perfect location for those that are into snorkelling.

For those looking to spend time in the water, this Kayak and Snorkel Tour of Playa de La Granadella is one of the best activities to enjoy in Javea. This two-and-a-half-hour excursion will take you on a fantastic adventure along the rocky Spanish coastline.

The trip includes a local guide, your transport for the day and all equipment. The tour is the best way to explore the area’s coastline and appreciate the natural beauty of Javea. So, jump into the water with your snorkelling gear and learn why they call La Granadella the “crown jewel” of the area!

Archeological and Ethnographic Museum

The Archeological and Ethnographic Museum in Xàbia is housed in an old and beautiful building in town. In fact, the history of the building is just as unique as the history inside. King Philip III’s steward built the building during the first half of the 17th century, and it’s survived through many eras and still retains the “rough stone” exterior, which is typical of the region.

If you’re visiting in winter, this museum is one of the best things to do in Javea when it rains. The museum itself has 13 exhibition rooms that walk through various local history points. The three floors take you through a visual history of Javea/Xàbia with a range of different artefacts on display.

The most popular stop at this museum is the Underwater Archeology Room on the second floor, where you’ll find a vast collection of pieces that were found on Javea’s coastline, ranging from the 7th century B.C. to the 7th century A.D.

Montgó Natural Park

View of Montgo Natural Park in Spain

The view of Montgó is visible from many different spots in town. You’ll find this 753m tall mountain in Montgó Natural Park, an excellent spot with more than 600 species of flora and more than 150 different vertebrates.

The best thing to do in Montgó Natural Park is hiking, and locals from both Javea and the nearby town of Denia love taking trips to the Montgó!

There are three different hiking routes that you can take to get to the top, which range from easy to difficult. The easiest path by far is Les Planes, with the most difficult being Cabo San Antonio.

Both paths give you beautiful views over Javea and the ocean, but don’t forget to wear sturdy shoes and pack water for this journey.

Go Mountain Biking Through Javea

Mountain biking is a great way to get to know the natural landscapes of Javea/Xàbia while enjoying the sunshine. This activity is another great thing to do in Xàbia if you’re looking for a fun day trip and a little bit of exercise.

This Mountain Bike Tour in Javea lasts for around three hours and takes you through various landscapes where you’ll ride between 40 and 70km, with up to a 750m elevation climb. Electric bikes are also available for those who want a little extra boost for their ride.

This tour is well worth the ride as it will take you outside of the town to see more of the region and its natural surroundings.

The Best Things to Do Near Javea/Xàbia,

So, now we’ve covered all of the best things to do in Javea, but what about a few day trips from Javea?

Luckily, Javea is surrounded by beautiful places to visit, making it the perfect base to explore the towns and beaches of the Costa Blanca. Here are some of the best places to visit near and around Xabia!

A visit to Benidorm is one of the best things to do near Javea

It’s true – Benidorm is filled with British expats and it definitely lives up to its reputation as a party destination, but it can be a lot of fun, especially in contrast to the more laid-back Javea.

Aside from sunbathing on Benidorm’s gorgeous beaches, you haven’t visited Benidorm if you haven’t gotten drunk on €1.50 pints!

Getting to Benidorm from Javea : The drive is 40 minutes. If you’re travelling by public transport the direct bus takes around 1 hour and 10 minutes each way.

Denia in Spain

This is my favourite place on the Costa Blanca, and a town I called home for a few months. A trip to Denia is easily one of the best things to do near Javea!

One of the best things to do in Denia is the Denia Castle, which costs just €3 to visit and is a living reminder of the area’s Moorish history. It’s also good fun to stroll around the Marina el Portet. Denia’s port is always filled with fancy and expensive boats, and it’s interesting to take a look and see how the other half live.

Getting to Denia from Javea : Denia is just a 20-minute drive from Javea. The direct bus takes 49 minutes each way.

Alicante on the Costa Blanca, Spain

Alicante is one of Spain’s most popular holiday resorts, and when it comes to beautiful beaches Alicante really knocks it out of the park.

This city is compact, so it’s easy to explore its old town on foot. Whilst you’re here don’t miss the Museum of Contemporary Art, which is inside a 17th century mansion. It’s one of the most popular tourist attractions in the city!

Getting to Alicante from Javea : the drive takes 1 hour and 10 minutes. If you’re travelling on public transport the direct bus takes 2 hours and 20 minutes each way.

Villajoyosa

Villajoyosa

Villajoyosa is home to one of the best beaches on the Costa Blanca, Playa del Bol Nou. Due to its slightly out of town location this beach barely ever gets overcrowded. Plus, there’s a bar on the beach! I’m sure you’ll agree this makes it one of the best places to visit near Javea.

The star attraction in this town is the Chocolate Museum. It opened in 1998 and is connected to the Valor Company, which has a factory next to the museum. On a visit here you’re sure to be drooling as you’ll learn all about how chocolate is made.

Getting to Villajoyosa from Javea : the drive takes 50 minutes. Unfortunately, getting to Villajoyosa by public transport can be quite the mission, with the bus taking 2 hours and 30 minutes each way and the tram taking 2 hours and 50 minutes each way.

Like everywhere else on the Costa Blanca, the best time to visit Javea/Xàbia is late spring (May) or early autumn (October). At this time of year it’ll be the perfect sunbathing and sightseeing temperature. Warm, but not overbearing.

Of course, the most popular time to visit Javea is summer, since the Costa Blanca is one of Europe’s most beloved holiday destinations.

However, it’s worth knowing that the heat is absolutely relentless in Javea in summer. It’ll make sitting in the sun or trying to do much of anything very challenging!

Javea/Xàbia is a unique seaside town that offers a lot to do in terms of history, food, architecture, and outdoor adventure. If you’re in the Costa Blanca I definitely recommend adding a day in Javea to your travel itinerary.

Ermita Santa Llucia Walking Route

A family admire the view from the Santa Llucia Ermita Church in Javea

🥾 Walking Level – easy 🪧 Walking Route – SL CV-99 / green and white ⭕️ Loop Track ⏱ Trail Time – 30 mins to 1 hour 👣 Distance – 1.4 km 🚗 Car Parking – at the trail head 👨‍👩‍👧‍👧 Kid Friendly – yes

The Trail Location and the Sights

Lavender, rosemary and prickly pear grown wild on the walking trail in Javea.

This cute little one hour loop walk is very near the heart of the old town in Javea. The trail takes you up a winding track to the 17 th century Santa Llucia chapel. This typical Spanish church has the perfect vantage point, perched at the top of the hill. As such, it provides you with some amazing views over the old town, along the valley and out over the bay beyond Javea.

Also if you’re the foraging type, consider the season and keep your eyes on the fauna growing wild along the trail. At certain times of the year, you’ll see ripe prickly pear, or flowering lavender, wild thyme, rosemary and other treats provided by mother-nature.

The walking route is labelled SL CV-99 with green and white trail markings. You have the option to start the walk from the old town. Alternatively, if you prefer there is a convenient carpark at the base of the hill and trailhead.

Navigating The Walk & What to Expect

A family walk on the Santa Llucia Ermita SL CV-99 walking trail in Javea Spain.

There is a sign for Ermita Santa Llucia at the start of the trail.

The track feels like it takes an anti-clockwise direction around the hill to start with. But eventually begins a zig zagging path directly up towards the church. The path splits nearer the top of the track, at this point keep left, continuing up towards the Ermita Santa Llucia.

Then when you have explored the church, admired the views and read the information signs take the same track back to where it splits. Keep left, continuing on the loop track. This leads you further around the hill and down a road, through a wooded gulley and back to where you started.

It’s a pretty walk with some rewarding views. It’s not a big walk, nor challenging but with that said the start might be considered a steep uphill ascent. Click here, if you want to see the offical pamphlet for Ermita Santa Llucia trail and step by step instructions online.

Fun Fact – A pilgrimage is made on the 13 th of December every year in honour of Santa Llucia. Starting at the San Bartolome church, the participants make the walk up to the Ermita Santa Llucia. This is followed by a service, during which offerings of sweets and chocolates are made.

Los Molinos – The Windmills – 3+ options

A family admire the view from the Molinos in Javea

🥾 Walking Level – easy / moderate 🪧 Walking Route – PR CV-355 / yellow and white ⭕️ Loop Track – 3 options ⏱ Trail Time – 1 hour 30 mins or 4 hours or 8+ hours 👣 Distance – 4.5 or 10 or 20+ km 🚗 Car Parking – at the trailhead 👨‍👩‍👧‍👧 Kid Friendly – yes

If you’re in Javea and look up to the ridge that runs from Montgo out to the Sant Antoni light house, you’re bound to see the 11 Molinos lining the peak. These were originally built as windmills to refine the grain from the area. But with industrialisation and a significant conversion of wheat to grapes, these subsequently became surplus to requirements.

One of the Molinos dates back to the 14 th century and the others to the 18 th century. They are no longer working, and all are missing the vaulted roves and iconic blades. Now only the rock cylindrical shaped structures can be seen. Some are privately owned and have been converted into houses, with the others in various states of restoration. However, they are still very impressive as well as offering stunning vistas over Javea.

This is one of those trails that can either be taken as a smaller walk or can include other options. Below we share three options for walking trails that include a visit to the Molinos. Each trailhead departs from a different location within Javea.

✨ Note: The Molinos can be visited directly by car. Read our post on things to do in Javea for more details on how to plan your visit!

Option 1 – Shortest Route – 4.5 km

A hiking family explore the Molinos on the PR CV-355 walking trail in Javea / Xabia.

One of the main trails is a 1 hour and 30 minute walk. This 4.5 km loop track starts from the Sant Antoni nature reserve car park. This gentle walk allows trail-goers to enjoy the scenery and sights of Cap Sant Antoni, without the steep elevations.

From the carpark follow the white and yellow markers of PR CV-355 . This track leads west along the ridge following the coast towards Denia. Eventually arriving at an old rundown police barracks, follow the signs pointing left towards Santuari de la Mare de Deu dels Angels. This smaller road crosses over the main road Ctra. del Cap de Sant Antoni. This is also the location of La Plana Monastery on the left which is a nice stop.

From here continue on the road, Cami del Monastir, until arriving at the Molinos. Once reaching the first Molino turn right following the ridge. Keeping Javea on the left, continue along this path until reaching the furtherest of the Molinos. Then doubling back to this same point to continue the trail and views of the remaining Molinos. To complete the track, follow the marker leading back towards the main road and carpark.

For this trail we recommend downloading the Wikiloc Trail guide app.

Option 2 – Half Day Route – 10-11 km

A tourist sign in front of the Molinos de la Plana explain the historical relevance and function of these windmills to Javea, Spain.

Alternatively, this half day intermediate level loop route starts at the port. Allowing 4 to 5 hours, this trail covers approximately 10 km with extra view point options within the trail map. This hike has some steep sections, so be prepared for some leg burn! Once again, follow the white and yellow markers of the PR CV-355 .

Begin by finding a park in the Javea port. Then either follow the Wikiloc map below, or decide whether to include the small walk to the marine reserve Cala Tango. This is explained further on our list of best beaches in Javea , which offers some great snorkelling and a cliff jumping spot.

Follow the main PR CV-355 trail head to the Sant Antoni light house for some amazing views back towards Javea. Then after visiting the lighthouse, walk west along the ridge to the main Sant Antoni nature reserve car park.

Continue the track along the Plana del Cabo San Antonio, with optional view points towards the north of the Cape. At this point, the trail connects back onto the walk noted above. However, from the Molinos, follow the steep track back down to the port through town and finally past the Church Parroquia Nuestra Señora de Loreto.

Option 3 – Full Day Route Including Montgo – 20+ km

tourist map javea

Our third 8+ hour trail, includes several further options to combine other highlights and sights of interest in Javea. Maybe a summit of Montgo or a visit to the impressive Cova Tallada caves. For this full intermediate to advanced walking track, we recommend that you download and print the offical PR CV-355 guide from the Xabia Tourist Centre .

Keep in mind the trail is straight. The trail head departs from the port and finishes with a summit and descent of Montgo. This means that the trail end as per the guide, completes at the Montgo Car Park aka Plana de St Jeroni. Consequently, hikers need to consider that the hike starts and finishes in two different locations .

⛰🌊 We briefly explain these trails below, but we’ve also created dedicated blogs for summiting Montgo and the walk to Cova Tallada .

We summited Montgo and visited Cova Tallada. However, walking 20+ km in one day with our kids aged 7 and 10 seemed over optimistic. Therefore we separated these trails into seperate days. One day for the Molinos, one for Cova Tallada, and another for Montgo.

Cala Blanca and Caleta de Dins – Beach Walk

🥾 Walking Level – easy 🏹 Straight Track ⏱ Trail Time – 20 minutes return 👣 Distance – 320 m 🚗 Car Parking – Cala Blanca Parking 👨‍👩‍👧‍👧 Kid Friendly – yes

For an easy stroll, or a beach that’s a little quieter with some great snorkelling check out Cala Blanca and Caleta de Dins. Read our post on best beaches for more information about these two bays as a swimming destination.

This pretty little walk takes you along the coastline at the southern end of Javea. It’s a pleasant 20 minute return walk covering less than 1 km.

The beautiful bay of Caleta de Dins, with family snorkelling in the distance.

Park at the carpark at Cala Blanca. The first section of the walk follows the road and will bring you to Cala Blanca. This is a tiny little cove with an entrance you can swim out through, you will know it when you see it. Once here you can either follow the walking path up and around, for a better look from above. Alternatively, go down and follow the well-worn track around and through the two large holes in the rocks.

Eventually you will arrive at Caleta de Dins. The beach and the rock reef are a tranquil place to sit. But we definitely recommend combining this walk with a swim.

Cala Barraca aka Portixol – Beach Walk

The creu del Portixol in Javea Spain, overlooking Portixol island, the trailhead to Cap Prim.

🥾 Walking Level – easy 🪧 Walking Route – PR CV-97 / green and white 🏹 Straight Track ⏱ Trail Time – 40-45 minutes return 👣 Distance – 1.5 km return 🚗 Car Parking – Creu del Portixol 👨‍👩‍👧‍👧 Kid Friendly – yes

The gorgeous little pebbled beach of Cala Barraca IS accessible by car. But parking is limited and during the summer if you’re not there really early, like before 9am, then a parking space is unlikely. However, there is a perfect little 1.5 km, 45 minute return trip walk to get you there and back. This makes it a great walk to start the day, or take your swimmers, mask and snorkel and make a day of it.

A drone image of Cala Clemence and Portixol beach in Javea, Spain.

The walk starts at Creu del Portixol lookout point, which does have some parking but is also limited. Then it’s as simple as follow the green and white SL CV-97 trail towards Cala Barraca. From the car park it’s all downhill, which obviously means the reverse for the return walk back. Click through to the walking guide here from Xabia Tourist Centre to see the trail in more detail.

From the same car park is the Cap Prim walk which is explained next.

Cap Prim and Sardinera Cove – Mirador & Beach Walk

Impressive views from the PR CV-98 Cap Prim walk over looking steep cliffs and coastlines in Javea Spain.

🥾 Walking Level – easy 🪧 Walking Route – PR CV-98 / green and white 🏹 Straight Track – 2 options ⏱ Trail Time – 1 hour + 👣 Distance – 2.2 km return 🚗 Car Parking – Creu del Portixol 👨‍👩‍👧‍👧 Kid Friendly – yes

This is a 2.2 km return walk to Cap Prim which takes around an hour. But this depends on if you wish to walk further down to Sardinera Cove. The walk out to the cape is an easy walk with little change in gradient. It provides some stunning views from the Cap Prim Mirador out to Isla del Portixol then back towards Javea.

Optional on this trail is Sardinera Cove. This is another of Javea’s beautiful stony calas , perfect for swimming in. You may find the cove full of boats during the summer as it’s quite a popular spot to anchor up for the afternoon. Sardinera is another great spot for snorkelling around the rocky shoreline on either side of the bay.

Sardinera bay on the PR CV-98 Cap Prim trail in Javea is one of the family friendly walks in the region. Montgo is in the background.

The walks also starts at Creu del Portixol lookout point, labelled as SL CV 98 with white and green trail markers. However, at the bottom of the first set of stairs you turn left out towards Cap Prim. Just over the halfway point, is a track to the left down to Sardinera Cove. We chose to walk first to the Cap then stopping at Sardinera on our return for an afternoon swim.

Click here for the offical pamphlet for the Cap Prim walk from Xabia Tourism Centre .

Granadella – 4 Options – Mirador & Castle Walk

The Granadella beach on the hiking trail PR CV-354 in Javea, Spain - one of the best walks in the region.

🥾 Walking Level – moderate 🪧 Walking Route – PR CV-354 / yellow and white ⭕️ Loop Track – 4 options ⏱ Trail Time – 1.5 hours – 5 hours 👣 Distance – 3.2 to 14 km 🚗 Car Parking – Granadella Car Park 👨‍👩‍👧‍👧 Kid Friendly – 7+ years

A child climbs the rungs on a more challenging part of the PR CV-354 Granadella walking trail in Javea.

The Granadella walk has several options to choose from depending on fitness levels and time preferences. The beginning of the trail includes a nice 45 minute coastal walk out to the Granadella castle, which could also be the end point for a return walk.

But if you continue ahead choosing the loop trail, there are a further three optional tracks. The shortest taking 2.5 hours, the second taking 3 hours and the largest at 13.6 km and taking approximately 5 hours. The steep cliffs provide excellent miradors and lookouts, these panoramic views are some of the best in Javea!

A family hold a chain railing on the PR CV-354 Granadella walk in Javea.

All of the walks start from the Granadella car park which is a 25 minute drive south of Javea Port. We recommend a small change to the All Trails map below. From the carpark, cross over the main road to Cami Vell de Morro de Castell, follow until it connects back to the track. This cuts out an unnecessary piece of the walk. Then from here, follow the yellow and white PR CV-354 trail.

The first section is a steep uphill climb before levelling off and leading around the headland. The views around the coast and back down to Granadella beach are spectacular. This track leads to the Granadella Castle ruins which takes around 45 minutes and comprises of several steep up and down sections as well as a small three rung ladder section over a larger rock face.

It’s important to take it slow on this portion of the track, and to wear suitable footwear such as trainers. In several places there are chain holds to help with balance.

Option 1 – The Granadella Castle – 3.2km Return

Overlooking the Granadella Castell or Castle on the PR CV-354 trail - one of the best walks in Javea Spain.

At the headland, the track emerges over the castle ruins. This is where the track splits, one path leading down to the castle and the other up the ridge line as part of the continuing loop tracks. From here hikers have the option either to turn back and take the same walk out or to continue on with the below.

Option 2 & 3 – The Granadella Smaller Loop Tracks – 5.2 to 6.7km

A father and child approach the Mirador de Llevant lookout in Javea, Spain on one of the best walks in the region.

Follow the trail markers up to the ridge and along the southern coast to Mirador de Llevant. This takes around 1 hour 30 minutes, covering 2.6 km and reaching about 180m above sea level. Again, taking in some spectacular views.

After the Llevant lookout the track levels out and turns north west, taking you inland. Just under 1 km along this track is the first of two alternative loops back to Granadella Cove. The first option is Teuleria which covers 1.8 km and around 30m. Thereby a total walking distance and time of 5.2 km and 2 hours and 20 minutes.

The second option is 500m further along the main track named Gurugo. This loop is 2.9 km and takes 40 minutes to bring you back to Granadella. Thereby covering a total of 6.7 km and taking around 2 hours and 40 minutes.

This All Trails map highlights Option 2 – the smaller loop track – Teuleria. We chose to take Option 3 and walked back via the Gurugo trail, which with kids took 3 hours in total. For the complete Xabia Tourism Guide to the Granadella PR CV-354 trail click here .

Option 4 – Greater Granadella Loop Track – 14 km

Sign posts point in different direction on the PR CV-354 trail in Xabia.

This is the longest alternative route back to Granadella. So if you’re still on the main track then you’re in it for the long haul!

Wander ravines, ridges and plateaus for the best of the Granadella forest park. This area is largely uninhabited and therefore a great place to feel a sense of tranquility. You’ll occasionally pass other’s on the track, maybe even someone riding their horse. The Granadella track was one of our favourite walks in Javea.

Once you’ve finished any of these four walks, it’s well worth hitting the Granadella beach for a cool down. Or stop into one of the small restaurants for something to eat, or a refreshing cool cerveza.

Montgo – Summit and Mirador Walk

A family hike down after finishing their summit of Montgo in Javea, Spain - one of the most challenging treks in the region.

🥾 Walking Level – moderate – high 🪧 Walking Route – PR CV-355 / yellow and white 🏹 Straight Track ⏱ Trail Time – 3 to 4 hours return 👣 Distance – 7.5 km return 🚗 Car Parking – St Jeroni Carpark 👨‍👩‍👧‍👧 Kid Friendly – 7+ years

The impressive Montgo and iconic backdrop of Javea provides one of the region’s best walks. And for this reason we felt it deserved a dedicated post. Read here for summiting Montgo in Javea .

So in order to provide the basics here, the Montgo trail and hike is an 8.5 km, 3 hour return walk. The the trailhead begins at the St Jeroni car park in the Montgo Natural Park. It’s categorised as an intermediate to difficult walk.

And as with all summits, it’s straight up! Starting at 216 metres the highest point reaches 753 metres. There are sections towards the top of the hike that require some grit… we were using all fours at points on the trail. This said, despite the challenges Montgo poses, the views are spectacular and the self satisfaction when you reach the top just can’t be beat. We took our kids aged 7 years and above and they thrived on the challenge!

Cova Tallada – Sea Cave Walk

The sea caves in Cova Tallada near the Montgo Natural Park in Javea, Spain.

🥾 Walking Level – moderate 🪧 Walking Route – PR CV-355 / yellow and white 🏹 Straight Track ⏱ Trail Time – 1 hour return 👣 Distance – 1.6 km return 🚗 Car Parking – Parking on Carretera Provincial Barranco Monyo 👨‍👩‍👧‍👧 Kid Friendly – 7+ years – younger children could go with parent help

This was another one of our family favourite walks. Cova Tallada is a 1.6 km, 1 hour coastal return walk, that starts in Denia. The highlights of this walk are the man made sea caves that have been carved out during the sand sone mining period.

While the walk is not long, it does have a couple of super tricky sections. Including a couple of areas where you need to hold a support rope. But also the challenging final descent into the cave where you need to time the incoming waves to avoid getting taken down. However, the main attraction of the amazing sea cave at the end is well worth the effort.

As such the Cova Tallada walk is best made at low tide. It is also a requirement to register online for the walk during the peak summer season. But read our full review of the Cova Tallada walk here .

One of the top reasons to visit Jávea is for it’s amazing coastal views. Jávea’s viewpoints , or miradores , offer some of the best panoramic views on the Costa Blanca. From Javea’s iconic viewpoints such as Cap de Sant Antoni and Mirador de la Falzia (our favourite!), you’ll have unparalleled views of the coastline and the surrounding natural beauty, as well as some of the most beautiful luxury villas in Jávea, Spain.

Most of these viewpoints are well signposted and have parking nearby, so you don’t have to worry too much about walking or hiking to find amazing views over the Mediterranean sea.

reasons to visit javea

Pristine beaches

Jávea boasts some of the most stunning beaches and secluded coves on the Costa Blanca if not in the whole of Spain. Beaches to explore on your trip include Arenal Beach in the town centre and the more tranquil Granadella Cove, offering crystal-clear waters and beautiful surroundings perfect for sunbathing and relaxation.

Jávea beaches can get very busy during the peak season, so make sure you head down there early to get a spot. We have tried to get to Playa la Granadella twice but the road was already closed at 9am as it was so busy!

If you can get a spot on a Jávea beach you won’t be disappointed, so it’s worth an early start.

The historic old town

If you like exploring old Spanish towns then you’ll enjoy a wander around the charming historic centre of Jávea. With narrow cobblestone streets, old churches, traditional Spanish architecture, and cosy tapas bars, there’s lots to see in Jávea old town.

Many houses are decorated with flowers and the streets often have fiesta decorations, making it perfect to snap some photos while you explore.

Jávea old town is within walking distance of the main beach area but if you prefer you can jump on the Jávea tourist train which has a total of six stops scheduled along the 8km route. The round trip takes 1 hour and you can get on and off along the route as you wish. The meeting points are at Avenida Alicante in the old town, Avenida Jaume I at the port, and at each end of the Paseo del Tenista David Ferrer at Arenal beach.

The weather

The weather in Jávea, Spain is one of the best reasons to visit. This part of the Costa Blanca gets around 320 days of sunshine every year so you can be sure of lovely blue skies most of the year. The best time to visit Jávea is in spring and autumn when temperatures are warm but mild. Jávea weather in July and August is very hot and humid making it difficult to explore too much, this is also peak season when the beaches are at their busiest.

Scenic coastline walks

Jávea is a great place for taking leisurely strolls along the beautiful coastline, exploring scenic walking paths such as the La Granadella Trail and the Cap Prim and Cap Negre route, which offer breathtaking views and tranquil surroundings.

The coastline around Jávea is rugged and dramatic, so some of the walks aren’t best suited for small children. However, if you can manage it you will be pleased you made the effort for the views alone. You can find more child-friendly walks in Jávea, check out this walking & hiking guide for more information.

24 hours between the most beautiful towns: Dénia and Jávea

  • 31 de July de 2024

author-avatar

Valencia is surrounded by sea and mountains. Nature melts at your feet to offer a wide range of possibilities to do every day. And not only that, you will find the most beautiful and picturesque towns in its surroundings.

If you are in the city, and you have time, do not hesitate to take a route to Alicante : its beaches are the best in the Valencian Community .

Getaway near Valencia: Dénia and Jávea, the jewels of Alicante

On the Alicante coast you can find wonderful coves, mixed with mountain massifs through which to make great hiking trails. And just one hour from Valencia you will find two of the most beautiful towns on the entire Mediterranean coast: Denia and Jávea.

Today we propose an express route, for those who do not have much time, but also expandable: ”hey, if you are comfortable, I would stay more days!”

Well, we are going to tell you about the essential places in Denia and Jàvea and why we believe they are the ideal couple for a getaway.

One complements the other

We really like to say that they complement each other, and that is that they fit together like the pieces of a puzzle. One is calm, another is lively, one has the most hidden coves, another the most beautiful port, one is more expensive, another cheaper, and so on.

Jàvea, the Ibiza of the peninsula

Jàvea has the most Ibizan coves, with crystal clear turquoise water and dreamlike landscapes. To access the coves you have to walk and take a short tour of the mountain, as they are hidden in the cliffs.

The promenade is beautiful, calm, elegant. It eats well, although at a higher price than its neighbor Denia.

Both towns are divided by the Montgó, one of the highest mountains near the sea that you will find.

tourist map javea

the wonder village

If you get to the promenade of Jávea, on the main beach ”el Arenal” and going up a bit towards the mountain, there is a hidden house called: Villa Dora: paradise for those who want absolute tranquility.

It has views of the entire bay of Jàvea, but at the same time it is surrounded by pine trees and at a considerable height to get away from the crowd.

Composed of 9 rooms and decorated with objects from other times, it transports you to a paradisiacal island of the 60s: your problems end when you cross the main door. And at the same time you will feel at home, the treatment is very close and the owner, Heidi, is an adorable person who will make your stay as warm and comfortable as possible.

In the upper part, the living rooms, chill area, kitchen, and dining area. (breakfast there is TOP) At the bottom, swimming pool and suites with private terrace, spectacular.

Once we settled in this refuge for the soul, we went to Denia to eat.

Food among the green of the orchards

To get to Denia you have to go by car and it takes about 15/20 minutes. But beware! It is a beautiful route because you have to cross the Montgó and go down to the bay, the views are amazing. We decided to go to a mythical place for its cocas: PontSec.

It is located on the orchard paths on the outskirts of Denia, an ideal place to eat on the terrace on a sunny day.

Famous for its orchard and its cocas , at PontSec you will get almost everything you ask for and at a good price. They have the orchard right next to the restaurant, you can go and see it.

The cocas mix lifelong tradition with the modern: the chefs continually test their flours to create better and better doughs and combine cocas with ingredients such as sardines, a classic, with other sobrassada and honey or cheese goat with spinach and pine nuts.

But in addition, the rice dishes and fideuàs are a scandal , and they have a grill where they cook all kinds of meat and fish.

It is a traditional place, which uses quality ingredients and grandmother’s recipes combined with an avant-garde touch.

Coca is a queen of the house, and they make them both sweet and savory: it is also worth trying the chocolate one, they put it with coarse salt and oil. A real explosion of flavor!

The romantic Denia

After a good meal, it is best to wash it down with a digestif or gin and tonic, so we headed straight to the promenade to enjoy the sun, walk around and digest the feast.

The port of Denia is sporty, beautiful and quiet. Full of color, palm trees and beach bars where you can have a drink. It’s nice to take a walk, while you contemplate the Montgó on your right, so imposing. One of the most emblematic places is Mala Vita: decorated with detail, lights, background music and the sea at your feet.

The next stop: the old town. We had not said anything about it, but it is not far behind the port: Denia is a super complete city, which combines more traditional and historical places, with modern areas and wild nature. Going for a walk around the old town when the afternoon begins to fall is ideal.

The houses of the old town are the classic ones of the Valencia area, two-story and colorful, similar to the Cabañal neighborhood of Valencia.

It is full of restaurants and bars and most of them are not that they are good, it is that they are VERY GOOD! Gastronomy is undoubtedly its strong point: fresh fish from the market, good rice dishes, cocas… nothing fails.

And you can also visit its castle and wander around discovering little hippy shops, picturesque houses and authentic bars.

To finish, we went through the Magazinos , which is an area with food stalls from all over the world and they organise cultural events. The atmosphere is very good and you can continue having tapas.

In short, the two towns have a leisure offer for one day, two, three and a week if you want. Here we leave you the essentials in case you decide to stay longer:
