From the high rocks downstream, one can see a big cave behind the falling waters, where residents say some animals live.

The winding V-shaped valley cut by the Sosiani adds to the beauty of the scene. From the river bed, the valley rises on both sides some 120 metres and ends only 50 kilometres downstream after Ndalat Hills near Kapkaren. Upstream, Ken Gen has built a dam to trap the river and divert it through a canal to turbines, which generate electricity whenever the water is overflowing during the rains.

Choose a dry day to visit, as the roads can be impassable during the rainy season. This is one of the coolest waterfalls where nature is at its best. Carry some snacks and wear shoes that have a firm grip as the ground gets slippery near the falls. Hire a local guide who will show you the soul of the attraction as you revel in its beauty. Listen to the soothing sounds of the river or the rumbling of the waterfall and explore the caves beneath.

11 Fun Things To Do In Eldoret On A Budget!

Things to do in Eldoret

Happy Thursday! :D Are you craving an adventure? As promised, here’s part two of our Jambojet experience with ideas of Fun things to do in Eldoret on a budget!

Today, I invite you on a different kind of journey as we explore the less traveled paths to Eldoret…

Think of landing in Eldoret as ‘point zero’, with access to endless possibilities of things to do in Eldoret & the greater North Rift region…

So in this post, we’ll travel across 4 Counties: Uasin-Gishu, Nandi, Elgeyo Marakwet & Trans-Nzoia. After all, why explore 1 county when you can visit 4, right? :D

Things_to_do_in_Eldoret

But first… check out Part 1 of our Jambojet in Eldoret Experience: HERE!

11 Fun Things to do in Eldoret & The North Rift Region !

P.S. In light of Covid-19, remember safety comes first. Before indulging in any of these activities: keep your mask on, maintain social distancing & sanitize frequently.

Visit a Tea Estate in Nandi!

Where Eldoret is dubbed the ‘ City of Champions ‘, Nandi County is  the ‘ Source of Champions !’

It boasts of top athletes like Eliud Kipchoge , Janet Jepkosgei & Kipchoge Keino. Nandi is also home to some of the most beautiful tea estates you’ll come across in Kenya!

Things to do in Eldoret

The 1 hour drive from Eldoret floats by as the stunning Nandi Hills & rolling tea gardens come into view… You can almost feel the sweat & hard work that’s poured into these plantations.

Things_to_do_in_Eldoret

>>You might enjoy coming here for the crisp, clean and refreshing air, or to learn tea-picking from the friendly locals… and most certainly for the views! :)

Play a round of Golf at Nandi Bears Club

Legend has it that once upon a time, a bear-like animal used to terrorize the residents in the area… Though it was never found, the name stuck thus earning Nandi Bears Club its identity.

The club was established in the 1920’s, initially for tennis and rugby games… They later constructed a 9-hole golf course with the longest hole at 530 yards.

Things_to_do_in_Eldoret

The club makes for a good escape not only for a game of golf, but also the peaceful & pristine green environment.

>>Nandi Bear Club is open to new members, with costs as indicated below.

Things_to_do_in_Eldoret

Picnic at Kapsimotwa Gardens

Kapsimotwa Gardens, in Nandi, is a charming picnic site hidden in what feels like a concave of lush greenery, trees and surrounding tea farms… It is the perfect place to picnic with your family and friends.

Visit Chepkiit Waterfall

Our visit to Chepkiit Waterfall remains one of my favourite experiences! If you enjoy the sound of water, then you’ll want to make a date with Chepkiit. :)

Jambojet_in_Eldoret

Since the road to Chepkiit is quite rocky, you’ll need a 4-wheel drive vehicle… You’ll find various viewpoints to watch River Sosiani majestically drain its waters over colossal rocks, down the escarpment…

Things To Do In Eldoret

P.S. >>I must emphasize the need for caution as there’s been fatal incidents here, in the past.

>>The entrance fee for adults is Kes. 200/- and Kes. 50/- for kids.

Wind down with Dinner At Naiberi River Resort

After an adventure-filled day, dinner at Naiberi River Campsite & Resort is exactly what the doctor ordered! :D

Naiberi Resort is located about 16km away from Eldoret town. From its stone-age-like structures, to the wild undergrowth by the river it feels like you’ve stepped into the calming palm of Mother Nature. :)

Things_to_do_in_Eldoret

We had dinner at their Stone Cave restaurant… The ambient lighting coupled with great food and fantastic company made for a memorable evening!

Things_to_do_in_Eldoret

You can also visit the Sirikwa caves (holes)… It’s believed that these caves were originally home to the Sirikwa people, in prehistoric times.

  • Jambojet has great flying packages to Eldoret… Check out their website for more details.

Race With Champions in Elgeyo Marakwet!

Heads-up! :D You’ll require a tonne of patience and a dash of good humor for the long road-trip… Elgeyo Marakwet County, aka the ‘ Home of Champions ‘, is about 3 hours’ drive away from Eldoret.

Luckily for us, with bright & humorous personalities like Samantha & Adagala, there was hardly ever a dull moment in our van! :D

tourist attraction sites in eldoret

Eric Maiyo, the Coach, welcomed us graciously to Kapsait Training Camp, along with veteran athletes: Simon Biwott, John Kemboi & Vincent Kipkemoi.

These former champions established Kapsait Training camp to support young, upcoming athletes from the region…

Things_to_do_in_Eldoret

The weather was quite shifty that day, so we retreated into one of the rooms to meet the upcoming athletes…

With the freezing cold, everyone was clad in heavy jackets. Yet, there was something electric in the air… Perhaps it was our amazement at the athlete’s humble demeanor or how touching their stories felt!?

In a room filled with such greatness, lined with humility & determination, you can’t help but feel inspired! :)

Things_to_do_in_Eldoret

Fun Fact: Brigid Kosgei, the 2020 London Marathon Women’s Champion and World record holder trains at Kapsait.

Travel Tips:

  • It’s a whole day-trip, so carry packed lunch & water.
  • Dress warmly as it gets really cold. Waterproof hiking boots or gumboots will come in handy.
  • Other attractions in the area: Mt. Koisungur Conservancy & hiking at Chergoit.

Chororget Church Rock View Point

This definitely tops my list of things to do in Eldoret! If you’ve ever doubted Kenya’s beauty, Chororget Church Rock will do the trick! :D

Things to do in Eldoret

Located in Kerio Valley, about 40min. from Eldoret, this viewpoint offers the most spectacular views of the Rift Valley! They named it ‘Church Rock’ as it’s situated right next to a church.

Chororget is the ideal place to go for a quiet retreat while also reveling in the joys of nature. :)

Things_to_do_in_Eldoret

P.S. Exercise caution since there are no barriers, at the rock edges

>>Entrance is free.

Scenic Lunch at Samich Resort

If you want both the views and a spot to relax while having lunch, then Samich Resort is your perfect stop… Strategically built at the edge of the Kerio Valley, you get magnificent undisturbed views!

We got to have a picnic lunch on the grass, with the Rift Valley sprawling out generously before us, as far as the eye can see… It honestly doesn’t get better! :)

Things_to_do_in_Eldoret

  • Entrance fees: Kes. 200/- for adults, redeemable at the restaurant.
  • Samich Resort is currently closed as they get their Covid-19 protocols in place, and will reopen soon.

Visit the Mt. Elgon National Park

Did you know?? The Mt. Elgon National Park covers about 1,279km², sitting squarely at the Kenya-Uganda border. It is rich in indigenous trees, vegetation, natural caves, waterfalls, wildlife & birds… The mountain’s highest Peak lies in Uganda, at 4,321m above sea level.

The Mt. Elgon National Park, located in Trans-Nzoia County, is about a 2 hours’ drive from Eldoret. And for the most part, the road is tarmacked with a manageable rough road section…

Things_to_do_in_Eldoret

As you enter the park gates, you’ll catch wildlife grazing leisurely without a care in the world.

Things_to_do_in_Eldoret

After a quick debrief with KWS and County officials, we ventured into the Park for a short hike to Kitum Caves…

Mt_Elgon_National_Park_

Fun Fact: Kitum cave contains volcanic rocks that wild animals like Elephants, bushbuck, and buffalo lick or ‘mine’ for its minerals.

Mt_Elgon_National_Park

Though it was rainy, the cool forest air felt refreshing! We found beautiful mini-waterfalls at the mouths of the cave…

Kitum cave is about 160m deep and it’s said to be 15 million years old. Apparently, the indigenous Sabaot tribe used to take refuge in Kitum cave from raiders.

Things to do in Eldoret

When you visit Mt. Elgon, allocate a few days to get the full park experience: mountain climbing, biking, waterfall chasing and hiking up the trails…

You can also visit the other caves like: Making’eny, Chepnyalil and Ngwarisha.

  • Affordable self-catering bandas and campsites are available for guests.
  • They intend to build tented camps in the near future.
  • Entrance fees: Kes. 250/- and Kes. 200/- for adults & kids respectively.

Other Things To Do In Eldoret and its Environs:-

  • Visit Kipkaren River resort for zip lining and archery.
  • Visit one of the 300 dams in Uasin-Gishu County like Kesses Dam for boat rides, swimming & sport fishing.
  • A boat ride at Kesses dam costs Kes. 100/-

Thing to do in Eldoret

Eldoret is one of the fastest growing towns of Kenya. Nestled south of the Cherangani Hills in the verdant landscape, it is one of African paradises where everything you see has the touch of natural beauty still unadulterated by the intruding modernity. Being the bureaucratic center of Uasin Gishu District of the Rift Valley Province, makes it an even more preferable place as you can find modern amenities, lodgings and more to ensure that your stay is more worthwhile.

Presently, Eldoret is a thriving service town sprawling Kenya Uganda highway. It is also the principal economic hub of the western Kenya but the travellers only have a little to see and even less to do here. One striking highlight however is the Doinyo Lessos Creameries Cheese Factory where you can stock up 20 different varieties of cheese.

The name of the town comes from Maasai word ‘eldore’ which means stony river. You can also spot an exact parallel in the very source of this inspiration, River Sosiani. The cultural influences present are variable. After all the, Sirikwa, Nandi and Maasai people have called this place home over a period of offering times.

Our Recommendations: What you can’t afford to miss?

Eldoret is a famous tourist destination in western Kenya which has several interesting attractions. You cannot skip the opportunity to visit the beautiful Naiberi Campsite which is situated at a distance of 16 km from Eldoret. If you are travelling in a group, then do plan a stay at this amazing campsite. The camping experience would surely help you uncover several mysteries of Africa . At Naiberi River Camp, the visitors are offered with an option to select the accommodation of their choice. There are tents, hotel rooms and even traditional hut like shelters which are quite fascinating. Tourists admire this place as it offers great knowledge about the local people and their origin, dating back from the stone-age. The camp is established on a hilly forest tribal land, which was once home to the Sirikwa tribe. You can check out the preserved excavations which are surely an amusing aspect of Naiberi Campsite.

The silent Kerio Valley lies between the Tugen Hills and  Cherangani Hills . The  Elgeyo Escarpment  shoots to a height more than 1,830 meters (6,000 ft) at some places. Kerio Valley holds a depth of 4,000 feet (1,200 m) which is indeed scary. This destination is one of the top tourist places in Eldoret which is managed in a pristine natural setup. You can examine the semi-tropical vegetation present on the slopes, while the valley base or floor is layered with dry thorn bushes. Tourists must keep a note that the best time of the year to visit Kerio Valley is during July and August. You will be stuck at the various mind boggling views which are rare to find anywhere else. The rains end during those months and the temperature also shows a slight dip, making the surrounding quite pleasant and relaxing. This region also houses a national reserve which was built in 1983 for preserving a wide variety of flora & fauna. The most appealing factor of Kerio Valley is the scenery.

The Kerio Valley National Reserve is perfect for sightseeing .  The reserve is home to a population of 200 elephants which are mainly spotted around the unreachable Lake Kamnarok. Tourists can hire a guide through the KWS Rimoi Game Reserve you will help you acquire a perfect view of the elephants. Kerio Valley National Reserve lies on the west section of the crocodile-infested Kerio River; whereas, the east side is tagged as the area for Lake Kamnarok National Reserve . You will be stunned by the dramatic scenery available in different portions of this reserve. Moreover, the existence of a vast birdlife is one of the major attractions for tourists. Earlier, there were hardly any facilities, but visitors were allowed to camp in the bush close to  Lake Kamnarok .  After the establishment of the reserve, there has been a significant rise in the wildlife population, mainly for the count of elephants. It is a great place to see in Eldoret.

This landmark is tagged as an adventure site which is located close to the Eldoret International Airport. You will cherish a visit to Ngala Falls which offers a picturesque image. The soothing natural surrounding along with the gushing sounds of water is surely an exclusive experience. It is a perfect spot for a picnic with friends and family if you are out touring Eldoret. But tourists must keep a note that, there is no hotel or accommodation close to Ngala Falls.

The Poa Place Resort is listed among the top places to see in Eldoret. This destination offers a classic blend of eateries, entertainment and comfortable accommodation to the locals as well as visitors. It was opened in 2008 and since then Poa Place has transformed into a family spot to chill and relax. The surrounding region of Poa Place houses a nature park where tourists can explore a wide variety of animal species such as lizards, rabbits, snakes etc. Since it is located on the outskirts of Eldoret, the accommodation setup here is quite raw. There are cottages available for all types of travelers which are equipped with useful amenities.

Elgon View is basically a suburb that is situated on the southern section of  Eldoret . This region was named after  Mt Elgon . The area has been allocated primarily for residential housing but under less density. This is one of the popular resorts for tourists because it houses all the top notch politicians, businessmen, athletes and religious leaders. There are various institutions in the area such as Eldoret State Lodge, Eldoret Club, the Eldoret Sports Club, Mother of Apostles Seminary High School, Hill Primary and secondary schools and Testimony primary and secondary schools. Some of the renowned residents of Elgon View are Ibrahim Hussein (runner), Geoffrey Mutai, David Rudisha and Kipchoge Keino.

What you will like there?

Eldoret is a blooming service town located on the Kenya-Uganda highway. Travelers have to give time so as to spot a number of interesting locations as well as activities in the town. One of the main highlights of Eldoret is the DoinyoLessos Creameries Cheese Factory . A major population of tourist prefers visiting this wonderful factory which stocks up around 20 different versions of cheese. Visiting this factory can be a great thing to do.

In Eldoret, you can access different types of accommodations ranging from hotel rooms to cottages. Some of the quality dwellings in Eldoret include Kerio View Hotel  which is located close to Iten . Moreover, you can also check out Sirikwa Hotel, the Noble Conference Centre, Relax Inn and Pine Tree Gardens and Water Crest Gardens .
