Tour Edge Hot Launch 524 drivers, fairway woods, hybrids: What you need to know

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2024/2/TourEdgeHotLaunch524.jpg

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: The Tour Edge Hot Launch 524 series of metalwoods once again brings together the company’s highest levels of technology, borrowed from the top innovations in its Exotics lineup, to a more budget-conscious consumer with drivers, fariway woods and hybrids that in some cases are half the going rate of many popular models. The 524 lineup includes two families, the E524 with a focus on extreme game improvement and the C524 with more traditional, compact shaping for more skilled golfers. Throughout there’s an emphasis on more ball speed across a broader section of the face. That comes from both a variable thickness face design made of dozens of diamond-shaped indentations and a central ridge the length of the crown designed to add structural stability at impact.

PRICE: E524: driver ($250; 10.5, 12, 15 degrees); fairway wood ($180; 16, 20, 23, 25, 27 degrees); hybrid ($150; 19, 22, 25, 28 degrees). C524: driver ($250; 9, 10.5, 12 degrees); fairway wood ($180; 15, 17, 19, 22 degrees); hybrid ($150; 19, 22, 25, 28 degrees). Available at retail March 1.

3 COOL THINGS

1. Diamonds on a budget. It is not impossible or even remotely remarkable to produce an affordable set of golf clubs. You can find a boxed set that includes a bag on Amazon right now for $200. Making a collection of tech-rich metalwoods that are sometimes as little as half the price of some current top models, though, is a different proposition. But Tour Edge has been living that mantra for decades, and the latest Hot Launch offering, the eighth edition, again incorporates the learnings of the company’s higher-priced Exotics line to give budget-conscious golfers some proven concepts. Foremost among them is a variable face technology the company calls “diamond face VFT.”

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2024/2/E524-Driver-Top.png

Appearing on the backs of the forged titanium faces of drivers, fairway woods and hybrids, the design uses rows of intersecting diamond-shaped patterns (sort of a crosshatch) of varying depths designed to create multiple areas of optimized face flexibility both across and up and down the face.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2024/2/C524-Fairway-Face.png

“This is by far the most tech we have put into the Hot Launch lineup and almost all of it comes directly from our ultra-premium Exotics designs,” said David Glod, Tour Edge founder and president, who refers to the distinct face thicknesses as “mini-trampolines.”

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2024/2/C524-Driver-Top.png

“Our goal is to bring Hot Launch to the highest possible level in game improvement and extreme improvement designs. They feature the specs and the playing characteristics that the vast majority of golfers are going to benefit the most from.”

More From Golf Digest

tour edge 4 hybrid

Glod says the variable diamond shapes create more ball speed potential and reduce spin. On the E524 woods, the driver face is backed 36 diamond shapes in four different sizes, the fairway wood features 34 and the hybrid 39. On the C524, there are 37 diamond shapes, the fairway wood uses 35 and the hybrid features an array of 34. The fairway woods and hybrids use three different shapes and thicknesses on their diamond shapes.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2024/2/C524-Hybrid-Front.png

In addition to creating more potential face deflection on off-center hits, the “VFT diamond” design concentrates on benefitting heel and toe hits to optimize ball speed across the face. The effect of the face deflection also helps to optimize spin, as well as providing durability for the thinner face design.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2024/2/C524-Fairway-Back-02.png

2. Crowning achievement. The crown construction is another element brought over from the Exotics 723 series of metalwoods. The driver, fairway woods and hybrid all incorporate the central ridge that stretches from front to back. Known as “ridgeback,” the I-beam shaped feature provides increased stability for better off-center hit power (or, more precisely, less loss of power on mis-hits). Specifically, Glod said the idea is to stiffen the middle section where face deflection and ball speed already are maximized, allowing for more give on the heel and toe regions where off-center hits are given more of a boost.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2024/2/E524-Hybrid-Back-02.png

Flanked by heel and toe sections on the crown with an aesthetic treatment that takes on a carbon fiber look, the ridge feature also serves an alignment function. Actually positioned slightly heelward from center, at address the angle of the ridge appears matched up with the center of the face.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2024/2/C524-Hybrid-Top.png

3. Family resemblance. The two collections serve two different player types, with the E524 exuding maximum game improvement features, while the C524 offers more traditional looks in line with what more experienced players would prefer. Those changes go beyond the visual, of course. The E524 driver, fairway woods and hybrids all feature more offset to help driver the center of gravity farther back and improve the tendency of the face to close at impact. The E524 driver also features a more upright lie angle and a shorter shaft to increase control. There’s also a heel-biased sole weight on the driver, fairway woods and hybrids to help attack the slice, and compared to the C524 there are higher lofts and larger visual footprints in the E524 to inspire more confidence.

On the C524 driver, fairway woods and hybrids, the sole weight is more centered and deep, creating a higher moment of inertia (heel-toe stability) than its predecessor. Like on the E524 woods, there’s a more pronounced sole rail that also keeps the CG lower, eight percent lower compared to last year’s driver and 22 percent lower on the hybrids.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2024/2/E524-Fairway-Top.png

Both the fairway woods and hybrids feature shallow face designs, although the E524 lineup is shallower than the C524 offerings. Each also makes use of an angle wedge of weight in the rear perimeter to lower the CG and provide extra stability. Known as the “Houdini Sole,” the wedge is angled away like a rudder, providing helpful weighting but heel and toe relief for better turf interaction. That angle is more aggressive on the E524 woods with more extreme heel and toe relief compared to the C524.

Tour Edge HL 4 Golf Club Set Review

tour edge 4 hybrid

Choosing a complete golf club set is never as easy as it should be. Unless you’ve had your eye on a specific set for a long time, it can be difficult to choose a set that is both pleasing to the eyes, desirable and one that will actually help improve your game.

The Tour Edge HL 4 set has everything a golfer needs to go from a beginner towards becoming a mid handicapper, the perfect blend of high quality clubs which will eliminate any distance gaps from your game and allow to improve tenfold without the expense of sourcing premium clubs separately from the top manufacturers.

It doesn’t get any easier the more you play either. Whether you’re a high handicapper or looking to take your game to the next level, it can be very hard to choose that next complete set that will take your game to the next level. For the former category of player though, we have put together a helpful review of one popular set.

The Tour Edge HL 4 Golf Club Set Overview

If you are a high to mid handicapper, you may just find your next set in the Tour Edge HL 4. HL stands for hot launch and it definitely provides a lot of what beginners to mid handicappers need: distance. These are definitely distance clubs that will help you get to the pin in a hurry.

Our First Impressions

Right off the bat, we were impressed and honestly a little intimidated when we first laid eye son the complete HL 4 set.

Impressed because these clubs look beautiful. Intimidated because it appeared that every club in the bag was oversized.

Who is the Set for?

There’s no mistaking who the Tour Edge HL 4 clubs were made for. Everything about their design screams distance.

If you are having trouble getting the distance you should be getting from your woods and long irons, this is a set that can help.

Breaking Down The Complete Set

tour edge 4 hybrid

The driver features a sloped crown and a titanium head that offers a better strength to weight ratio than stainless steel.

It also includes a slightly curved face for added forgiveness. It comes with a 460cc head size and can be had in 9.5, 10.5 or 12 degree loft versions

Fairway Woods

tour edge 4 hybrid

You can get an HL 4 number three fairway wood at 15 degrees, a 4 wood at 17, a 5 wood at 19 and or a 7 wood at 22.

They all feature a pear shape head design and extra weight in the rear of the sole for higher launch and forgiveness.

tour edge 4 hybrid

The shallow face and higher-sitting toe make the HL 4 hybrids forgiving. This design effectively broadens the sweet spot.

You can get a #3 hybrid at 19 degrees, a #4 at 22, a #5 at 25 or a #6 at 28 degrees of loft.

tour edge 4 hybrid

The longer blades and deeper undercut cavities are perfect for beginners and mid handicappers.

The soft stainless steel construction is also congenial for players working to master their irons. You can get irons 4-9 in a complete HL 4 set.

tour edge 4 hybrid

The milled grooves of the HL 4 wedges help you control spin on the green while the beveled leading edge helps smooth out turf interaction.

tour edge 4 hybrid

The Hot Launch putter is a mallet-style putter with a face insert with micro-etched grooves to improve feedback, feel and accuracy.

Club Composition

The Tour edge HL 4 driver, hybrid and fairway woods come standard with a UST Mamiya shaft that is available in ladies, amateur, regular and senior flex. The irons come with either the aforementioned UST Mamiya shafts or KBS Tour 90 Steel shafts in regular and senior flex.

Wedges are available in UST Mamiya or KBS Tour 90 steel shafts in regular, ladies, steel and amateur flex. All clubs are available in Lamkin Z5 Rubber slim and mid-sized grips.

Aside from the shaft and flex options, the Tour Edge HL 4 clubs feature an oversized design. We liked that the soles were commensurate with the overall size of the blades in the irons and wedges. This helped smooth out turf interaction.

The larger blades may also inspire more confidence in beginner players at point of address. Overall, the composition designs added a good amount of forgiveness to most of the clubs in this set.

Tour Edge HL 4 Pros & Cons

tour edge 4 hybrid

  • Great distance off the tee
  • Advanced features usually reserved for more expensive sets
  • Many set options
  • The wedges provide a surprising amount of greenside precision
  • Good launch angles
  • The irons aren’t very workable
  • No stiff flex options
  • Currently only available in right-handed
  • Not for players with faster swing speeds

Overall Score: 95/100

Other Sets Worth Considering

Callaway strata golf set.

Strata Golf Clubs

The Callaway Strata golf club set comes with 2 hybrids which, many beginner players will find convenient as longer irons are notoriously hard to master when you’re first starting out.

The complete set includes driver, a 3 and 4 wood, two hybrids, irons 4-9, wedges and a putter but also comes with various different club mixes.

This is a great set for beginners overall because it’s inexpensive and has some of the advanced features that Callaway has become famous for.

  • Putter includes precision face milling
  • Oversized 460cc driver head
  • Very affordable set for beginners
  • Beefy hosels
  • Set doesn’t come with a stand bag

Overall Score: 94/100

Cobra xl golf set.

tour edge 4 hybrid

The Cobra XL Speed complete golf club set features a titanium driver for increased flex without sacrificing stability. The shallow fairway woods feature heel weighting for increased MOI and forgiveness. The set is rounded out with cavity back irons that launch high and play long.

All of this amounts to a set of clubs that plays very fast. The face on the woods and irons offer explosive speed but none of the clubs lack stability. The club head design of this set ensures that the faces can flex as much as they need to without harshing feel.

  • Set has advanced features for intermediate players
  • It’s available in both right and left-handed orientations
  • All the clubs in the set feature an attractive gold/black color scheme
  • A bit pricey
  • Not the best complete set for beginners or high handicappers

Taylormade RBZ Golf Set

tour edge 4 hybrid

The Taylormade RBZ set features a 460cc driver with a fast-launching face and lightweight crown. The wedges in this set also feature smooth sole grinds to help you glide through the turf on tough lies.

Now this is a set that was certainly designed for more advanced players. There are features in the woods that probably only faster swing players will be able to take advantage of. They are worth a look if you are looking to invest in clubs that can keep up with you as your game improves, though.

  • High volume grooves on the wedges
  • Perimeter weighted irons
  • The driver plays very long
  • Not great for beginners
  • Limited flex options

Overall Score: 96/100

Final thoughts.

While the Tour Edge HL 4 clubs lack work ability as you get closer to the pin, one thing is certain: they can actually get you to the pin faster. Overall they play long enough to inspire hope in the most troubled beginner’s struggling with accuracy and distance.

They also launch high to help get you over dreaded hazards. The wedges even provide good spin control for more advanced players. Overall, this is a great set for beginners and mid handicappers so check it out!

Tour Edge Hot Launch C524 & E524 Hybrid Review

More in hybrids:.

TaylorMade Qi10 Tour Rescue

50 Words or Less

The Tour Edge Hot Launch C524 hybrid is easy to hit and versatile.  Mid launch and spin.  The Tour Edge Hot Launch E524 hybrid has higher launch and spin with a very strong draw bias.

Introduction

While many people point to drivers when talking about the rising price of clubs, I’ve noticed it most in fairway woods and hybrids.  This year, we’re seeing those two segments blast through the $300 barrier.  Tour Edge, however, is burnishing their reputation as “Golf’s Most Solid Investment” with the new Hot Launch C524 & E524 hybrids.  As with last year’s models [review HERE ], they’re offering modern performance at a throwback price.

tour edge 4 hybrid

Of all the Tour Edge Hot Launch 524 clubs, the two hybrids are the most similar.  Both have similarly short faces, more like fairway woods than irons.  They also share the Ridgeback Technology on the crown which provides some alignment help.  All that said, there are still meaningful differences between the two.

tour edge 4 hybrid

The Hot Launch E524 hybrid has the larger footprint .  It’s longer from front to back with a rounded shape.  Additionally, the offset is more noticeable in the E524, and it wants to sit a bit closed at address.

tour edge 4 hybrid

Side by side, the Hot Launch C524 hybrid is noticeably shorter from front to back.  It also has a slight pear shape which is enhanced by the Ridgeback Technology.  The long, shallow face with fairway wood-like score lines gave me a lot of confidence in elevating this club off the turf.

tour edge 4 hybrid

Sound & Feel

The Tour Edge Hot Launch C524 hybrid has a snappy sound at impact .  The volume is a bit below average, and it’s very consistent across the face.  The one exception is the heel which is noticeably louder.

Your feedback will come mainly through your hands which get a medium quick feel if you’re near the center.  The C524 hybrid is somewhere in the middle of the bell curve, feeling neither super solid nor hollow.

tour edge 4 hybrid

The Tour Edge Hot Launch E524 hybrid has a similar feel – a little quick, a little solid .  You won’t get a big change in the character of the feel when you miss one, but you’ll be able to sense the impact location through your hands.

Surprisingly, the impact sound of the E524 hybrid is a bit quieter than the C524 .  It’s not a massive difference, but it’s fairly obvious when you hit them side by side.  Pure strikes have a very crisp impact sound, but the volume is dialed down.

tour edge 4 hybrid

Performance

As with the other Hot Launch 524 clubs that I’ve tested, Tour Edge has done a good job of differentiating these two hybrids while allowing them to share some key traits.  One thing I noticed immediately about both hybrids is their shaft length.  While most 19* hybrids are 40.5″ or longer, these measure 39.75″.  That may not seem like a big deal, but it’s a smart way to help golfers get a little more consistency.  While every golfer should get fit for the length that suits their body and swing, opting for a shorter shaft can be beneficial, especially for higher handicap players.

tour edge 4 hybrid

Sticking with the idea of consistency, both the E524 hybrid and C524 hybrid have very good forgiveness .  Neither has elite ball speed, but the speed numbers are consistent across the face.

tour edge 4 hybrid

While both hybrids are easy to get airborne , launch angle is one area where the two clubs separate a bit.  The Hot Launch C524 hybrid tended to launch on an mid trajectory for me.  I found that the Hot Launch E524 hybrid launched a degree or two higher .  I could also feel the E524 hybrid’s Houdini Sole offer some additional help when I get the club into the ground too early.

tour edge 4 hybrid

Another key differentiator between the two hybrids is the level of draw bias.  In the Hot Launch E524 hybrid , the draw bias is advertised with a weight in the heel.  This club is a legitimate slice killer .  I had to hit the ball all the way in the heel or make an exaggerated cut swing to get the ball the fly straight.  In contrast, the Hot Launch C524 hybrid has some draw bias, but it’s not nearly as extreme.  My “straight” swing produced a modest draw, and I could get the ball to cut with some effort.

tour edge 4 hybrid

Finally, I found the Hot Launch E524 hybrid to be higher spinning than the Hot Launch C524 hybrid .  Relative to other hybrids, the C524 hybrid has spin that’s about average, giving it a strong ball flight.  The E524 hybrid has higher than average spin which gave it more stopping power on the greens.  Higher spin is also necessary to optimize carry distance for players with slower swings.

The Tour Edge Hot Launch C524 hybrid is a great choice for the good or improving golfer who needs a reliable long game club.  Higher handicap players or players at any level who fight a slice will love the Tour Edge Hot Launch E524 hybrid.  Either way, adding one of these to your bag won’t empty your pockets.
