Tour Down Under stage 1 live coverage

Sprinters queue up for time bonuses on fast stage around Tanunda

Tour Down Under results and news Tour Down Under preview How to watch the Tour Down Under – live streaming

Profile for stage 1 of the 2023 Tour Down Under

Welcome to Cyclingnews' live coverage of stage 1 of the Tour Down Under, a 149km stage around Tanunda. The stage starts at 11:30am local time or 2:00am CET and 8pm EST and finishes roughly four hours later.

We're just moments away from the start of Stage 1 of the Santos Tour Down Under. At 150km, today's stage is the second longest of this year's edition and will be one slated for the sprinters.

Today's stage starts and finishes in Tanunda and 139 riders are rolling through the neutral at the moment. The big crowds in Tanunda will see the peloton fly by four times.

It looks like race director, Stuart O'Grady, is slowing down the peloton due to a rider receiving help for a mechanical. Once the rider is back in the bunch, the former sprinter will drop the red flag to indicate the official start.

And we have our first attack coming from the Australian champion Luke Plapp.

But Plapp is reabsorbed and there's a counter from Taco van der Hoorn (Intermarche).

But that move was also brought back and it's all together at the moment. The sprinters' teams are policing the front, along with EF Education First who are protecting their race leader, Alberto Bettiol.

The weather is an unusual sight for the so often hot TDU, with riders setting off in mild overcast conditions and a forecast top of just 24 degrees in Adelaide. Those stocking sales might not peak as much as normal in Adelaide this year, with riders unlikely to be as quick to reach for the ice packed hosiery to keep them cool.

Nans Peters (AG2R) has taken off up the road, but no one seems keen to join him.

Lots of chatting in the main bunch at this point in the race. No one team is leading the bunch.

The peloton is approaching 127km to go, with Nans Peters up the road for AG2R.

Caleb Ewan has dropped back to his team car. It looks like he is thinking about changing to his spare bike.

Peters already has a 2'45" advantage on the peloton with 122km to go.

The reports are that Peters is edging an advantage up to five minutes at this point. EF Education First have come to the front to manage this time gap.

It looks like there's a small pileup toward the back of the peloton with Phil Bauhaus involved. He's up and moving again.

The peloton isn't going full flight at the moment, so the riders caught up in this crash don't have to panic. There's still 116km to go.

Nans Peters (AG2R) is off the front with a 4'20 second advantage on the peloton.

Tour Down Under

110 km to go

The riders are flying toward the finish line in Tanunda for the first time.

Nans Peters will of course be the first back into town. He's about 4'15" ahead of the peloton.

EF Education First are still at the front, but other teams are starting to fall in line besides them to try and pick up the second and third place in the first ZipTrack intermediate sprint.

Bettiol is contesting this, but he's caught back a little way. Israel Premier Tech is in control of the front.

Peters picked up the 3 points and three bonus seconds, and back in the peloton, Michael Matthews outsprinted Ethan Hayter for second.

EF Education First is back on the front after the excitement of the first intermediate sprint.

100km to go

With 100km to go, the gap to Peters is down to 2 minutes after the speeds going into Tanunda.

It's been reported that Paddy Bevin (Bora Hansgrohe) had to abandon the race following some injuries he sustained a couple of days ago.

The gap keeps dropping down for Peters, who at one point had a lead of almost five minutes. It's now sitting inside two minutes with just 1.5km to go before the base of the KOM climb.

And of course, Peters gets the max KOM points the first time over Menglers Hill (Cat. 4).

82 km to go

Peters has his head down as he goes across the finish line once again. That's the third time through Tanunda. He takes a bidon since there are no intermediate sprint opportunities this lap. Next lap will be the second and final intermediate sprint.

With 75km to go, the gap is looking very slender to Peters. It looks like they'll have the French rider back by the time they come back around for the intermediate sprint.

Today's pre-race favourite, Caleb Ewan (AUS) has his Australian National team all around him.

The young 20-year-old American, Magnus Sheffield (Ineos), is currently in the best young rider jersey after yesterday's prologue.

Tour Down Under

James Moriaty (Australia National Team) is leading the peloton for the team's sprinter, and possible stage winner, Caleb Ewan.

Now Israel - Premier Tech are leading the charge with Chris Froome at the front. However, Peters has nosed out a bit more time, and now sits at 1'37."

There are still two circuits to come, and the gap is down to 40 seconds. EF Education First has done most of the work in bringing Peters' time down to within striking distance.

And there's a crash toward the back of the peloton. It affected about 6 riders, and the race isn't hanging around. The peloton is setting up for the intermediate sprint, so it's going to be a challenge to catch back on.

It's all together and the bunch is still about a kilometre away from the intermediate, but already the elbows are flying as the teams get their sprinters in position.

Corbin Strong (Israel Premier Tech) takes the max points in the intermediate sprint ahead of Michael Matthews, who takes two bonus seconds, and Ethan Hayer gets one.

Italian Mattia Cattaneo and James Knox (GBR) of Team Soudal Quick-Step have a chat earlier in the stage. We have less than 50km left in the stage.

Tour Down Under

Jumbo Visma is starting to organise their train behind EF Education First.

The peloton has calmed a bit now before preparing for the final opportunity to get points at the KOM. The current leader in that competition is Peters, who got the max points earlier in the race.

Peters is working his way up through the peloton, despite spending the majority of the stage off the front. He's going to give it a go on this climb.

Menglers Hill (Cat. 4) is 3.6km long, and averages 3.6 percent. However it does get as steep as 13 percent in places.

And Nans Peters (AG2R) goes on the attack! But he's tracked down by a small group that includes Leo Hayter.

Peters is giving it his all toward the top, but it looks like Alessandro Covi (UAE) will take the max points ahead of Lucas Plapp (Ineos). That puts Plapp in the jersey at the end of the stage.

The peloton passes through Menglers Hill (446m) after the final KOM. Just 30 km remaining in today's stage.

Tour Down Under

We're heading back into Tanunda and soon the peloton will be on their final lap. EF Education First is still on the front.

They hear the bell for the final lap - 25km to go!

Another crash - this time it's three Jumbo Visma riders and one AG2R rider.

Robert Gesnik was one of the riders who went down in that fall, and he's told his two teammates not to wait for him.

The sprinters are making their way up through the peloton. Phil Bauhaus and Caleb Ewan are amongst them.

But they still have one more time up Menglers Hill, and Jumbo Visma are at the front ready to make it as hard as possible.

Israel Premier Tech is on the left for Corbin Strong, who revealed his form during the second intermediate sprint. We're getting closer to the sprint, just 14km to go.

Bahrain Victorious is also lined up for Phil Bauhaus, who has a crash early on in the stage.

And Matthews is also up there with his team. He's on the hunt for the ochre jersey as well as a stage win. Ewan, however, is surfing around teams without any teammates.

It's getting down to crunch time as the sprinters start to jostle.

The peloton is swirling around as they reach the flamme rouge. It's anyone's guess who will take this sprint. There isn't much cohesion from any one team.

There's a crash in the middle of the bunch which has stopped many riders.

And it's a win for Phil Bauhaus (Bahrain Victorious)!

Caleb Ewan (AUS) was second, and Michael Matthews (Jayco-Alula) claimed third. Alberto Bettiol (EF Education First) will stay in the ochre jersey heading into stage 3.

Phil Bauhaus wins stage 1 of the Santos Tour Down Under. Alberto Bettiol retains his lead in the ochre leaders jersey.

Tour Down Under

In that late crash right before the line, third place Magnus Sheffield (Ineos) went down and sustained cuts on both knees. He didn't go to the podium for best young rider, but seemed okay after medical treatment.

Tour Down Under 2024: Oscar Onley wins top finish, race has new leader; check the results and watch the arrival

Avatar of Marcos Bertelli

Oscar Onley took the first victory of the season for DSM-Firmenich. This was no ordinary victory as the talented 21-year-old cyclist commanded the action on the iconic Willunga Hill. At the finish he overtook Stephen Williams (Israel-Premier Tech) who came in 2nd place and Jhonatan Narváez (INEOS Grenadiers), who finished the race in 3rd place.

How was the competition

A breakaway opened the race, with around 10 cyclists, however before the 2nd ascent of Willunga Hill the peloton was already compact.

On the final climb, Chris Harper took the lead, setting an intense pace that stretched the peloton into a single file. With two kilometers to go, Onley joined Harper, who had recently opened up a lead.

At 1.3 km they were caught again, leaving around twenty cyclists, including Isaac Del Toro (geal classification leader), Alaphilippe and Bart Lemmen, among others. In the last kilometer, Harper once again accelerated, providing an opportunity for Lemmen to close the gap. Yates was the first of the main competitors to launch an attack, with Narvaéz quickly positioning himself in his circle.

Sprint final

With two hundred meters to go, Alaphilippe was the first to start the final sprint, but was unable to open a significant gap. Onley, in turn, accelerated and took victory. Williams came second and took the lead in the overall standings.

The pace was a little too fast for Del Toro, who crossed the finish line in eighth place, six seconds behind. In the general classification, he dropped to fourth place, with a five-second gap to leader Williams.

Portuguese and Brazilian

The Portuguese Ruben Guerreiro and António Morgado finished the stage in 23rd place, 32 seconds and 53rd place, 2min 01sec respectively, behind the winner. Brazilian Vinícius Rangel finished in 106th place, 8min 46sec after Onley.

Tour Down Under bikes: New colourways and components

There have been plenty of changes in the WorldTour over the off-season, including to the bikes, with many sporting new colourways and tech

Tom Hallam-Gravells

Online production editor.

The WorldTour season recently kicked off with a week of racing around the sunny streets of Adelaide at the Tour Down Under . It was an opportunity for riders to get some much-needed kilometres into their legs and show off their early season-form, something Stevie Williams (Israel-Premier Tech) did in style with a victory on the final stage to claim the overall title .

Meanwhile for the teams, it’s also an opportunity to show off their latest bikes. Many feature new tech and colourways while other teams are using new brands for 2024.

To help you keep track of all of the changes, we got our hands on every WorldTour bike at the Tour Down Under to see how they compare to last season’s offerings.

  • Read more: 2024 Men's WorldTour bikes: A guide to the bikes, groupsets, and tech of the top-tier teams

Alpecin-Deceuninck

Starting with Alpecin-Deceuninck who are yet to officially reveal their new colourway or kit for 2023, so we’ll have to assume that it has stayed the same.

The team’s bike and equipment line-up also remains unaltered, with riders getting to choose between the Canyon Aeroad CFR or the Canyon Ultimate CFR.

Arkéa-B&B Hotels

French outfit Arkéa-B&B Hotels has a new name for 2024 but its Bianchi bikes remain the same, as do the colourways which blend black and celeste.

The one major change is to the wheelsets, with the old Shimano rims swapped out for Vision . That doesn’t affect the groupsets, though, and the team will continue to use Shimano ’s Dura-Ace throughout 2024.

Astana Qazaqstan

Astana Qazaqstan's Wilier Filante has kept its eye-catching design

Astana Qazaqstan's Wilier Filante has kept its eye-catching design

It could be a big season for Astana Qazaqstan who have retained the services of Mark Cavendish as the British rider bids to break the record for the most Tour de France stage wins.

He’ll attempt to do so atop the team’s familiar Wilier Filante SLR, while riders can also opt for the lightweight 0 SLR. Both bikes have kept the same marble-effect colourway which is unique to each bike, although, like Arkéa-B&B Hotels, the team has switched to Vision wheels.

Bahrain Victorious

It’s a new look for Bahrain Victorious in 2024. The team has ditched its traditional red kit, which has been a theme since its inception, for a new white ensemble.

That has passed over to the bike which is a muted, subtle design. Apart from that, the Merida Scultura and Reacto bikes remain the same, as does the componentry.

Bora-Hansgrohe

Bora-Hansgrohe have made the switch to SRAM from Shimano

Bora-Hansgrohe have made the switch to SRAM from Shimano

Bora-Hansgrohe has mixed things up with their kit for 2024, without straying too far from their usual design. There’s no change to the bike’s colourway, though, which stays the same.

It may look the same but the bike is sporting a radical change in the form of SRAM’s Red AXS groupset. The German outfit made the switch to the American brand from Shimano and has also changed from Wahoo to Hammerhead computers, who happen to be owned by SRAM.

  • Read more: Bora-Hansgrohe confirm switch to SRAM for 2024

With Van Rysel linking up with the newly-named Decathlon-AG2R La Mondiale team, Cofidis have partnered with Mobel Sport for their new kits. That hasn’t led to any noticeable changes to the kit and it’s the same for their Look 795 Blade bikes which have the same design and equipment for 2024.

Decathlon-AG2R La Mondiale

There's a new bike brand in the WorldTour peloton in the form of Van Rysel

There's a new bike brand in the WorldTour peloton in the form of Van Rysel

If there was a prize for the biggest overhaul over the off-season, it would go to AG2R. After losing Citroën, the team added Decathlon as a title sponsor and the French brand brought its Van Rysel RCR Pro bike, helmets and sunglasses with it.

As well as a new bike and colourway, the team has also elbowed out Campagnolo in favour of Shimano ’s groupsets. That’s bad news for the historic Italian brand which will be absent from the WorldTour in 2024. Swiss Side wheels are also a new addition to the bike.

  • Read more: A closer look at the Van Rysel bikes Decathlon-AG2R La Mondiale will ride in 2024

dsm-firmenich

Meanwhile, dsm-firmenich would win the prize for the most divisive colourway change having swapped out its former black and blue design for white and orange. Their bike in 2023 was one of the most eye-catching with a glitter-like effect and there’s no denying that the dominantly white colour on their 2024 Scott Addict and Foil bikes doesn’t stand out in the same way.

Beyond that, the bikes are the same as in 2023.

EF Education-EasyPost

Does EF Education-EasyPost have the best-looking bike?

Does EF Education-EasyPost have the best-looking bike?

EF Pro Cycling has never been afraid to play around with their designs, leading to some of the more creative kits and bikes in recent history. 2024 is no different and the team have opted for a pink and yellow combo for their kit, which is also joined by shades of white on their Cannondale SuperSix Evo and SystemSix bikes. The result is arguably the most vibrant bike design in the WorldTour peloton, but we’ll leave it up to you to decide whether it’s the best.

Groupama-FDJ

The biggest surprise of the off-season came when Lapierre and Groupama-FDJ ended their 22-year partnership. It will be strange watching the team ride Wilier bikes in 2024, who they have now partnered with.

Alongside the change of bike, there’s also been a switch from a predominantly blue to a white colourway, but there are no changes to the componentry.

Ineos-Grenadiers

Elia Viviani's Pinarello Dogma F

Elia Viviani's Pinarello Dogma F

In the Pinarello Dogma F, Ineos-Grenadiers have one of the most recognisable bikes in the WorldTour peloton. Although it has adapted over the years, the bike’s silhouette has remained largely unchanged and still bears a striking resemblance to the first Dogma the team started using at its inception in 2010.

The only difference this year is the colourway, which is now orange and black rather than red and navy.

Intermarché-Wanty are using new Look Keo pedals

Intermarché’s Cube Litening Aero C:68X has already enjoyed success this season at the Surf Coast Classic where Biniam Girmay sprinted to victory .

Sitting alongside the lightweight Litening Air C:68X, the bike has only one subtle change in the form of new Look Keo pedals. These were officially released after the Tour Down Under finished but were already being used by multiple pro teams.

Beyond the new pedals, the bikes have a new cloudy-blue design along the seat tubes, but the trademark fluorescent bar tape remains.

  • Read more: Tour Down Under pro bike: Biniam Girmay’s Cube Litening Aero C:68X

Jayco AlUla

Jayco AlUla ’s partnership with Giant is now entering its third season, having previously used Bianchi steeds.

Once again for the 2024 season, riders will choose between the aero Propel or the TCR which remain unchanged from last season, barring the team’s new blue and orange colourway.

Lidl only joined the team as title sponsors midway through last season, leading to a mid-year change of kits. Those kits and bike designs will remain the same in 2024 for their first full season of WorldTour action.

It’s the same for the team’s Trek Madone and Emonda bikes, although the latter may soon be receiving a revamp. Giulio Ciccone was recently spotted riding a version of the bike which appeared to feature Trek’s IsoFlow technology. This is essentially a hole in the seat tube which, up to now, has been reserved for the Madone.

  • Read more: Has Giulio Ciccone been spotted on an unreleased Trek Emonda?

Movistar's Canyon Aeroad

Movistar's Canyon Aeroad

Movistar ’s long and successful partnership with Canyon continues in 2024. The German brand offers both the Aeroad or the Ultimate and both have retained the team’s familiar blue colours.

At first glance, the bike appears to be identical to last season’s offering but there is one small change hidden within in the form of new Time pedals, which have replaced Look alternatives for 2024.

Soudal Quick-Step

Amid much anticipation, Specialized unveiled the latest iteration of its Tarmac series, the SL8, ahead of the Vuelta a España in August. Soudal Quick-Step immediately made the transition across from the SL7, although many riders had already tested the new bike in races ahead of the official release.

The SL8 will be the team’s bike of choice again in 2024 and, despite Soudal’s extravagant kit reveal, its colourway is very much business as usual.

The Colnago V4Rs was one of the most successful bikes in the WorldTour in 2023

The Colnago V4Rs was one of the most successful bikes in the WorldTour in 2023

The Colnago V4Rs was released at the end of 2022, just in time for the 2023 season. And what a season it turned out to be: whilst Grand Tour success proved to be elusive, the Monuments were happier hunting grounds. First the Tour of Flanders fell to Tadej Pogačar and the bike, before the pair teamed up to claim the Il Lombardia title later in the year.

The bike will once again pilot UAE Team Emirates ’ riders throughout the 2024 season and will be specced with the same components, including the ENVE SES wheels which have received a minor update in the form of new Innerdrive hubs.

Visma-Lease a Bike

With a major change of sponsorship, the newly-named Visma-Lease a Bike was expected to undergo a makeover and to take on a new look. Instead the team’s kit and bikes will once again adorn the familiar yellow and black colours, albeit in an eye-catching honeycomb design for the bikes.

The bikes in question are the Cervélo S5 and R5 which will once again be joined by Reserve wheels and the SRAM Red AXS groupset.

Tour of Somerville: N.J.’s biggest bike race whips through soggy streets (PHOTOS)

B icycle racers from across the world returned to Somerville for the borough’s 79th bicycle tour on Memorial Day, race organizers said.

As the oldest continuing bicycle race in the country, the Somerset County annual holiday tradition saw hundreds of amateur and professional cyclists compete in this year’s Tour of Somerville in multiple races for varying age ranges and skill levels.

Cyclists competed for more than $20,000 in cash prizes, race organizers said. Races began at 9:25 a.m. and continued for much of the day despite rainy weather.

Cyclists from New Jersey, New Zealand, Canada, Mexico and other locations competed in the race, which was held in the borough’s downtown area. The 1.1-mile course contains four turns with no elevation change.

The 25-mile Mildred Kugler women’s race featured many of North America’s national champions. The multi-lap, 50-mile Kugler-Anderson Memorial men’s race featured 150 professional cyclists, officials said. Each race featured $10,000 in prize money for the winner.

Dubbed the “Kentucky Derby of Cycling,” Somerville’s bicycle tour traces its origins back to 1940, officials said. Since then, several national champions and Olympic athletes have participated in the race and won the competition.

The race consistently attracts thousands of spectators. It was canceled in 2020 and 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, then returning in 2022.

Somerville was also the original home of the U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame, which was founded in 1987. It was located in the borough until it was moved to Davis, California, in 2009.

Wout van Aert is back in action this week at the Tour of Norway, as he makes his first appearance in a competitive race following his recovery from injury. According to former team-mate Nathan Van Hooydonck, Van Aert is "still in rehab" as he assessed whether the Belgian will even want to put himself forward for the Tour de France, which starts on June 29 in Florence.
