ATLANTA -- When Oklahoma State golf coach Alan Bratton was recruiting Viktor Hovland in 2015, he remembers Hovland telling him that he couldn't wait to get to the United States and hit balls off grass.

"I remember thinking that was a phrase I'd never burped out of my mouth," Bratton said. "I couldn't relate to it."

Bratton didn't grow up trying to play an outdoor sport in Oslo, Norway.

The Scandinavian country known more for downhill skiing and snowboarding is now home to the hottest golfer on the planet after Hovland won the Tour Championship by 5 strokes over Xander Schauffele at East Lake Golf Club on Sunday. Hovland carded a 7-under 63 in the final round.

Hovland started the staggered-scoring event at 8 under and shot 19 under on his own to finish 27 under. He was 11 shots better than U.S. Open winner Wyndham Clark , who finished third, and 13 better than Rory McIlroy , who was fourth.

It was Hovland's second straight victory after he captured the BMW Championship at Olympia Fields, Illinois, last week. His latest victory came with the FedEx Cup and an $18 million bonus. Hovland, 24, earned $21.6 million over the past two weeks.

"It's been a great year," Hovland said. "I feel like I've taken a lot of steps this season, contending in more major championships. I finally won in the U.S. I won a big tournament, Jack [Nicklaus '] event. And honestly, after that, I felt like I've gotten so much better, and it was very pleasing to see. Obviously, the last couple weeks have just superseded that. It's been pretty surreal.

"Obviously, you dream about it, but these things happen when you don't really expect them."

Hovland joins the likes of past FedEx Cup champions McIlroy, Tiger Woods , Jordan Spieth and Dustin Johnson .

Hovland's path to East Lake Golf Club was one of the most unlikely. He didn't start playing golf until he was 11. His father, Harald, worked as an engineer for one year in St. Louis and brought his son home a set of clubs.

Hovland practiced at an indoor golf facility and played outdoors when there wasn't snow on the ground. There are about six to eight hours of daylight during the winter months, and Hovland passed time by watching instructional swing lessons on YouTube. The good news: There are about 18 to 19 hours of daylight during the height of the summer. Hovland didn't leave the golf course until after 10 p.m. on most summer days.

"I would take every single day very seriously because every day I had home in the summer I couldn't just waste away the day, because in a couple months, it's winter, and I can't play outside," Hovland said. "So every single day I tried to get its most out of, and I think that really helped me."

Bratton got his first look at Hovland while he was watching future Oklahoma State player Kristoffer Ventura competing in the European Boys' Team Championships in Scotland in 2013. Hovland was two years younger and wasn't one of Norway's best players.

Bratton saw enough talent in Hovland to offer him a scholarship in 2015, and Hovland signed with the Cowboys shortly after visiting campus. In 2018, Hovland helped the Cowboys win a team national championship. That summer, he won the U.S. Amateur at Pebble Beach Golf Links.

Hovland was the low amateur in the 2019 Masters then the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach Golf Links in his final tournament as an amateur. His 4-under total of 280 over 72 holes broke Nicklaus' U.S. Open scoring total for an amateur set at Cherry Hills in 1960.

Less than a year later, after earning his PGA Tour card through the Korn Ferry Tour, Hovland picked up his first victory at the 2020 Puerto Rico Open, making a 30-foot birdie on the final hole to win. He became the first player from Norway to win on the PGA Tour. Less than 10 months later, he made a 12-foot birdie to defeat Aaron Wise in the Mayakoba Golf Classic.

Hovland's victory at Puerto Rico taught him something else about his game: He needed to develop a better short game.

"I suck at chipping," Hovland said at the time. "That's something I know I'm going to have to improve if I want to play my best at this level."

Since bursting on tour, Hovland has been regarded as one of the best ball strikers in the world.

"He's just so straight. He's just so accurate," England's Matt Fitzpatrick said. "Tee to green is phenomenal. Every time he hits a shot -- it just stupid as sounds -- the ball's always going forward. There's not really much shape on it. It's just always going forward, and I think that's impressive."

But what wasn't impressive until recently was Hovland's short game. During the 2020-21 season, he ranked in the top 10 on tour in strokes gained: tee to green, off the tee and total. He was 124th in strokes: gained around the green. Hovland was 191st in that statistic last season.

"His short game [trouble] was overblown," Bratton said. "When he was younger and during his time here, his short game wasn't awful. It wasn't his strength. It got exposed a little bit out there on the PGA Tour. He was never very good from the rough. Going against the best players in the world, you can't afford to have a weakness. When that's all anyone wants to talk about, then it can become something bigger than it needs to be."

To Hovland's credit, he devoted more time to chipping. He has been working with short-game specialist Joe Mayo. Hovland has been using the AimPoint putting technique to help him read greens better since 2020; developed by Mark Sweeney, it uses physics to help players read the slope of greens.

"He's been awesome," Hovland said of Mayo. "I like just picking people's brains, and he's an interesting brain to pick. He might be one of the only golf instructors that never watches golf. So when he came on board, he had no idea how I played, what I was doing, what it looked like. So he kind of had a fresh set of eyes. Yeah, he's just brought a lot of math and physics to my golf game, and we've just applied that, put a lot of hours in -- and funny enough, it works."

Hovland won twice more this season, at the Memorial in June when he beat Denny McCarthy in a playoff in a designated event then last week's playoff event. He also has won twice on the DP World Tour. Since 2020, only Jon Rahm has won more times combined on both tours with 10 victories.

At East Lake Golf Club, everything came together for Hovland. He led the field in strokes gained: off the tee (4.814), was fifth in approach (4.730), 11th around the green (1.103) and fourth in putting (3.387).

When did Hovland realize winning a Tour Championship might be possible?

"When I start to see the short game kind of come around and I believe I have all the shots," Hovland said. "I just saw the shots that I was able to pull off in tournaments and in highly stressful situations. I coupled that with the course management stuff and just the attitude, just handling bad bounces, handling bogeys, handling bad shots. Just those three aspects combined, when I started to see that, I wasn't stressed when I showed up to a golf tournament or a golf course. It was like, 'OK, whatever happens, happens. I might play bad, and that's OK.'

"Even today, it wasn't like, 'Man, I hope the double cross with the driver doesn't show up today. I hope I don't three-putt today. I hope I don't chunk the chips today.' You know, that might happen, but it's OK. I think just as soon as I made that mindset change, everything started to kind of come together."

Grayson Murray's parents say the two-time PGA Tour winner died of suicide

Grayson Murray's parents said Sunday their 30-year-old son took his own life, just one day after he withdrew from a PGA Tour event. The family asked for privacy and that people honor Murray by being kind to one another.

“If that becomes his legacy, we could ask for nothing else,” Eric and Terry Murray said in a statement released by the PGA Tour.

Murray, a two-time PGA Tour winner, spoke in January after winning the Sony Open in Honolulu about turning the corner in his life, his golf and battles with alcoholism and mental health. He died Saturday morning.

EDITOR’S NOTE — This story includes a discussion of suicide. If you or someone you know needs help, the national suicide and crisis lifeline in the U.S. is available by calling or texting 988. There is also an online chat at 988lifeline.org .

Murray had to go through the Korn Ferry Tour to get his PGA Tour card back. And then he birdied the last hole at the Sony Open to get into a playoff, and made a 40-foot birdie putt on the first extra hole for an emotional win.

“It's not easy,” Murray said immediately after winning. "I wanted to give up a lot of times. Give up on myself. Give up on the game of golf. Give up on life, at times.”

Murray tied for 43rd last week in the PGA Championship, which enabled him to hold his position among the top 60 to earn a spot in the U.S. Open next month at Pinehurst No. 2 in his native North Carolina.

He shot 68 in the opening round at Colonial. The next round, he was 5 over and coming off three straight bogeys when he withdrew citing an illness.

PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said he spoke with Murray's parents about halting play at Colonial and they insisted the golf tournament continue.

Monahan flew to Fort Worth, Texas, to be with players. Many of them wore black-and-red pins on their caps Sunday in honor of Murray. Those are the colors of the Carolina Hurricanes, his favorite NHL team.

“We have spent the last 24 hours trying to come to terms with the fact that our son is gone. It’s surreal that we not only have to admit it to ourselves, but that we also have to acknowledge it to the world. It’s a nightmare,” his parents shared in their statement.

"We have so many questions that have no answers. But one. Was Grayson loved? The answer is yes. By us, his brother Cameron, his sister Erica, all of his extended family, by his friends, by his fellow players and — it seems — by many of you who are reading this. He was loved and he will be missed.

“Life wasn't always easy for Grayson, and although he took his own life, we know he rests peacefully now.”

Grayson was a raw talent after taking up golf at age 8. He won his age division three straight years at the prestigious Junior World Championship in San Diego. But he struggled to fit in at college, going to Wake Forest, East Carolina and then Arizona State.

His first coach was Ted Kiegel in North Carolina, who like so many others was devastated.

“Words cannot express the tragedy of this moment,” Kiegel said in a statement sent to The Associated Press. “Grayson came from something that was ordinary and made it EXTRAORDINARY. ... He burned bright for the 30 years he gave us.”

Murray won as a 22-year-old rookie at the Barbasol Championship in Kentucky, and frustration began to set in as he didn't improve as quickly as others whom he routinely beat as amateurs.

He was always open about depression and anxiety, and his bouts with alcohol. One of his darker moments was at the Sony Open in 2021 when he was suspended for an incident in a Hawaii bar. Murray took to social media to say, "Why was I drunk? Because I’m a (expletive) alcoholic that hates everything to do with the PGA Tour life and that’s my scapegoat.”

He also accused the tour of not giving him proper help, which the tour denied.

Monahan said Saturday at Colonial that he called Murray right after that posting and subsequently spent a lot of time with him.

“I think one of the elements of his legacy is his resiliency,” Monahan said. "So you think of going back to 2017, winning the Barbasol Championship, going back and forth between the Korn Ferry Tour and the PGA Tour. ... self-assessing, coming back, becoming in his own eyes a stronger human being, and then winning three times in the past year.

“To me, that’s a level of resiliency that is extraordinary.”

When he won on the Korn Ferry Tour last year, Murray talked about his parents having “been through hell and back basically for the last six years for me fighting some mental stuff.”

“Everyone has their battles,” Murray said a year ago. “Sometimes people are able to hide them and function, and sometimes you're not. I think our society now is getting better about accepting that it's OK to not be OK. I've embraced that mentality. I'm not ashamed that I go through depression and anxiety.”

He also used social media to reach out to others dealing with similar issues in a sport where losing takes place far more than winning.

Murray said in January after he won the Sony Open that he often felt like a failure who had wasted his talent.

“It was a bad place, but like I said, you have to have courage," he said. "You have to have the willingness to keep going. Lo and behold, that’s what I did, and I’m here, and I’m so blessed and I’m thankful.”

He saw that Sony Open victory — which got him into the Masters for the first time — as the start of a new chapter. He said he had become a Christian and was engaged to Christiana Ritchie. He said in January the wedding had been planned for late April.

“My story is not finished. I think it’s just beginning,” Murray said in Hawaii. “I hope I can inspire a lot of people going forward that have their own issues.”

Collin morikawa's career-low round, scottie scheffler's putting woes among tour championship's first-round takeaways, share this article.

tour championship east lake 2023 results

ATLANTA — On a sweltering hot day, Adam Schenk torched East Lake Golf Club in his Tour Championship debut to the tune of 7-under 63. Yet he still got beat by two strokes in his pairing with fellow competitor Collin Morikawa.

“It sounds bad to say, but I’ve never won out here, so I guess I get kind of used to losing a little bit,” Schenk said. “But I played great, he just played a little better.”

If it makes Schenk feel any better, the 26-year old Morikawa posted his career-low on the PGA Tour, a sizzling 9-under 61 that was as hot as the temperature. Morikawa, who entered the week at No. 24 in the FedEx Cup, began the tournament at 1 under and 9 strokes behind FedEx Cup leader Scottie Scheffler in the staggered start. By the time the day was over he was in the thick of the trophy hunt, tied with Keegan Bradley, who shot 63, and Viktor Hovland (68) for the lead at 10 under.

Scheffler (71) led by as many as five strokes on the front nine but hit it in the water and made a triple bogey at 15 to squander his lead. At the conclusion of the Tour Championship, the player with the lowest stroke total over 72 holes when combined with FedEx Cup Starting Strokes, will be crowned the FedEx Cup champion.

“Shoot, no better time, I guess, in our Tour Championship to show up and start playing some golf,” Morikawa said.

The two-time major champion said he made some subtle changes to his setup on Tuesday, and his iron play shined Thursday. He hit 16 greens in regulation and gained nearly four strokes on the field with his approach shots and ranked first in proximity too. Walking up the 15 th hole with caddie JJ Jakovac, Morikawa joked he had already hit more shots pin high than he had in four rounds at most tournaments of late. At the water-guarded 224-yard par-3 15 th , Morikawa oozed with such confidence that he didn’t even bother to watch the ball flight.

“Because I knew where it was going to go, and that’s the kind of control you want,” he said.

On one of the rare occasions when Morikawa misfired, he got a lucky break when he tugged his tee shot at the fifth hole and it ricocheted off a tree, back to the fairway and he made birdie.

“That’s kind of the momentum stuff that I just haven’t seen all year,” he said.

One hole later, he drilled his second shot from 224 yards to inside 4 feet and made eagle. Morikawa and Schenk combined to make 15 birdies and that eagle and nary a bogey between them for what would’ve been a best-ball 13-under 57, and both agreed they fed off each other as the round built.

“There’s a rhythm to it,” Morikawa said. “It was just really, really easy I think for both of us.”

Schenk, 31, also started the tournament trailing by nine strokes but closed the gap with four birdies in his final five holes and improved to T-5.

“I just fed off more of Collin than anything probably, and then I made some, and then he made some maybe off of me, but it’s definitely an enjoyable day when you are playing with someone that does play really well,” said Schenk, who is searching for his first career Tour title and summed up the round “as one of those days where nothing could go wrong.”

Here are four more things to know from the first round of the Tour Championship.

Scheffler struggles

2023 TOUR Championship

World No. 1 Scheffler shuffled away from a short post-round media session with his head down. He looked deflated after frittering away an early five-stroke lead and making a triple bogey at 15 en route to shooting 71 at East Lake.

That’s the bad news. The good news is he has three rounds to right the ship, and he’ll enter the second round in fourth place, just one stroke back at 9 under.

“It is a bit weird starting a tournament with the lead. I don’t know. It’s definitely an interesting format,” he said. “I guess it’s a little bit of a blessing to have a pretty bad day and still be in the tournament. So, yeah, go out there tomorrow and just keep fighting.”

Scheffler returned this week to his Scotty Cameron Special Select Tourtype GSS putter, the one he used to win the 2022 Masters and several tournaments, but it provided no spark to his struggles with the short stick. Scheffler ranked dead last in the 30-man field in Strokes Gained: Putting, losing 3.229 strokes in the first round.

Scheffler carded three birdies in his first six holes to reach 13 under, but he took three putts from 34 feet at No. 8 for his first bogey of the day. He bounced back by stuffing his approach at 10 for an easy birdie, but made back-to-back bogeys at Nos. 11 (another three putt) and 12. The 15 th proved to be his bugaboo, first rinsing his tee shot and then lipping out for yet another three putt and a triple-bogey six on the card, his first triple or worse on a hole all season (2,179 holes between them). No one else made worse than a bogey at 15 all day.

“I was expecting him to keep going after that start that he had, but that’s just this golf course,” Viktor Hovland, who played alongside Scheffler in the final group, said. “It’s not easy, especially that 14, 15, corner there.”

Bradley’s hot putting performance

2023 TOUR Championship

Bradley finished with three birdies in his final four holes to shoot 63, his lowest score in 17 rounds at East Lake.

He is competing in the Tour Championship for the fifth time, but is making his first trip to Atlanta since 2018. This is the 10 th time he has held the 18-hole lead or co-lead on Tour, and he has yet to convert any of them into victory. In fact, he held the solo 18-hole lead at the 2011 Tour Championship, his first appearance in the event, where he opened with a 64 and went on to finish T-11, his best result in four previous starts.

Bradley played solid in all departments but had an especially good day with the putter, ranking second in Strokes Gained: Putting.

“I’ve been playing this last month under so much pressure every week, it seems like, and to go out there and shoot a round like that felt really nice,” he said.

Ryder Cup hopefuls make final push

As Zach Johnson contemplates his six Captain’s picks for the 12-man team representing Team USA, he had to notice that some of the names under consideration were making a move on Thursday at East Lake. Check out this exchange with Bradley:

Does this week, how far do you think it goes for Ryder Cup, for being considered or picked?

KEEGAN BRADLEY: Man —

Q. You knew this was coming, didn’t you?

BRADLEY: I knew it was coming, yeah. I was saying, I try my hardest to not think of the Ryder Cup, but everybody asks me about it. And as I’m walking down the fairways everyone’s yelling to me about it. So it’s impossible for me to not think about it. I got to think, a two-year qualifying process, with the tournament a month away, I don’t think everything is based on this tournament. But it might be. So, better to go play well than to not. I mean, they know how much I want to be on the team.”

The other player who help his cause is Morikawa.

“Hopefully, my record speaks for itself. Hopefully the golf speaks for itself today,” Morikawa said.  “But, look, at the end of the day, I want to win this tournament. I really do. It’s been too long. I want to find a way to win. Today definitely helped that.”

Rickie Fowler, who is also part of the conversation for a pick, shot 2-under 68, and Sam Burns signed for 4-under 66. Lucas Glover’s late push for a pick took a hit with a 2-over 72, which included a triple bogey.

Jordan Spieth, who is expected to get one of the six picks, shot 1-under 69.

Hovland seeking back-to-back wins

2023 TOUR Championship

There’s no cooling off Hovland, not in this heat.

Hovland didn’t go crazy like he did on Sunday at the BMW Championship, making seven birdies in his final nine holes to ride off with the title, but he did enough in the opening round on Thursday to grab a share of the lead in the Tour Championship.

Hovland fired a bogey-free 2-under 68 at East Lake to join the three-way tie at 10 under. It was a subpar putting day by Hovland’s standards, as he lost nearly 2½ strokes on the greens and ranked 29th in SG: Putting (better than only Scheffler).

“I feel like it was a solid round,” he said. “I felt like I played a little bit better than the score, but hopefully that comes tomorrow or the rest of the week.”

AUSTIN, Texas –  No. 1 Texas Rowing travels to Bethel, Ohio, for the 2024 NCAA Division I Rowing Championships on May 31-June 2 at East Fork/Harsha Lake in search of its third NCAA title in the last four seasons. The Longhorns head into the weekend as the top overall seed, including the No. 1 seed in the First Eight and Second Eight while the Four was selected as the second seed.

Texas is the top overall seed for the second time in program history and first time since 2022. The First Eight earned the top seed for the third time in program history (2021-22) and the Second Eight for the second time (2022).

UT placed fourth overall at the 2023 NCAA Championships, while the Texas Four won the national crown in the event for the first time in program history.

2023 Tour Championship leaderboard: Collin Morikawa tied on top breaking Tigers Woods' record at East Lake

Moriakwa's 125 through 36 holes is two strokes better than woods' previous record mark in atlanta.

Collin Morikawa is off to a record start at East Lake Golf Club, following his Thursday 61 with a Friday 64 to shoot 125 through the first two rounds of the 2023 Tour Championship. That mark bests the prior best set by Tiger Woods, who shot 127 through 36 holes in 2007.

Morikawa remains tied atop the Tour Championship leaderboard with Viktor Hovland, who was similarly on fire in Atlanta on Friday. Hovland, last week's BMW Championship winner, once again utilized a back-nine sizzler to pull ahead of the competition and into pole position alongside Morikawa at 16 under as the weekend begins at East Lake.

Rattling off four straight back-nine birdies and needing only 30 strokes across his final holes, Hovland remained on top with Morikawa with the duo now sitting two strokes ahead of Scottie Scheffler, who entered the Tour Championship two shots in front of Hovland in an advantage provided by the FedEx Cup standings.

With $18 million awaiting the eventual winner, there is still plenty of golf left to play entering Moving Day. Keegan Bradley (-13), Xander Schauffele (-12), Jon Rahm (-12) and Rory McIlroy (-10) all sit within six shots of the lead with 36 holes left to play.

If Hovland is to become the first player since Patrick Cantlay in 2021 -- fourth overall -- to pull off the BMW Championship-Tour Championship double, he will need to putt like he did Friday. Ranking 29th in strokes gained putting in Round 1 -- besting only Scheffler -- Hovland found his groove in Round 2 gaining nearly three strokes on the green and ranking first in the field. He has proven to have the complete game and a champion's mettle, but so have his American counterparts as the list of potential FedEx Cup winners has shortened.

Morikawa made his move Thursday, and while he matched Hovland with a 64 on Friday, Hovland finished hotter on the day with a back-nine 30. Carding a bogey-free 6-under 64 to sit at 16 under, Morikawa finds himself needing to match the hottest player in the world stroke for stroke if he is to make history and become the first FedEx Cup champion to start the week nine off the pace.

Meanwhile, Scheffler has been flawless since his triple bogey on the 15th hole in Round 1, playing his next 21 holes in bogey free fashion at 6 under. The FedEx Cup leader (at the tournament's start) and No. 1 golfer in the world is within striking distance of retaking the lead entering Saturday's third round.

The leaders

T1. Viktor Hovland, Collin Morikawa (-16): If it felt like déjà vu, that's because it was déjà vu. Hovland's back-nine 30 looked awfully similar to his back-nine 28 at Olympia Fields from last Sunday. He began the homeward half with a par before carding scores of 3-3-3-2-3 to speed past his counterparts. Not only did Hovland claim the lead at the halfway point, he effectively trimmed the potential names engraved on the FedEx Cup trophy. For much of the afternoon, the leaderboard was packed like sardines. Hovland has since cracked open the tin and made it so those at the top have plenty of room to swim.

The contenders

3. Scottie Scheffler (-14) 4. Keegan Bradley (-13) T5. Xander Schauffele, Jon Rahm (-12) 7. Rory McIlroy (-10)

Outside the mess on the par-5 finisher, Scheffler's second round was what we expected from the world No. 1 this week. Getting around the par 70 without a blemish and adding five birdies along the way, Scheffler remains in the thick of it at the halfway point. Like Hovland, Scheffler was much better on the greens Friday gaining nearly two strokes with his gamer. If he putts like that, he should win the FedEx Cup and make up for last year's blunder. However, it's a big if.

Xander's love affair with East Lake

Stop, if you have heard this before: Schauffele is in contention at East Lake. The winner of the Tour Championship in 2017 -- the final year of the shadow leaderboard -- Schauffele now eyes his first FedEx Cup crown. In his 26 rounds at East Lake, Schauffele has shot under par 23 times (including a 64 Friday) and not once has carded an over-par round.

"It's just you got to sort of plot around the property well and if you can get your putter going, the greens are so pure you feel like you can start rolling anything in," said Schauffele. "So, it must just fit my eye. I'm not really sure. But, yeah, I mean, I played pretty well around the property and I'm going to need some more of that magic here on the weekend."

Rory's back still an issue

The three-time FedEx Cup champion looked somewhat looser Friday compared to Thursday, but McIlroy continues to struggle with his back. A 3-under 67 has him on the periphery of contention at 10 under, six adrift of the leaders. However, his eyes may already be on the Ryder Cup despite confirming he will be playing in the Irish Open and the BMW PGA Championship on the DP World Tour before the action in Rome.

"I would rather it pop up now than in three or four weeks' time," said McIlroy. "Yeah, again, I've managed it well and I think I did well to get through yesterday. I've got through another day. Hopefully it feels a bit better over the weekend"

Rick Gehman and Patrick McDonald recap the second round of the Tour Championship. Viktor Hovland keeps rolling, Scottie Scheffler bounces back and much more. It's storylines, scorecards and betting favorites. Follow & listen to The First Cut on  Apple Podcasts  and  Spotify .

2023 Tour Championship updated odds and picks

  • Viktor Hovland: 17/10
  • Collin Morikawa: 23/10
  • Scottie Scheffler: 33/10
  • Jon Rahm: 10-1
  • Xander Schauffele: 14-1
  • Rory McIlroy: 22-1
  • Keegan Bradley: 25-1

These are the only seven players listed below 150-1. The top three on the board command the most respect, and rightfully so. I think you can cross off Bradley and McIlroy, due to his health, making this a five-man race for the crown. Let's take a shot on Schauffele at 14-1 to track down the three-headed monster.

Rory wraps up

It is a round of 3-under 67 for the three-time champ, and he will head into the weekend at 10 under. It is likely he finds himself a touchdown behind Hovland or whoever claims the 36-hole lead, but the main concern has to be his back and if he can stretch it even further.

Hovland makes his move

The Norwegian remains en fuego and now holds the lead at 15 under. The Americans trail by one and separation has officially been made as the next closest player is four strokes behind Hovland. It is likely Hovland, Scottie or Collin will be your FedEx Cup champ.

Leaderboard beginning to separate

Three young guns now have a two-stroke lead over the rest of the field with Collin Morikawa leading the way at 14 under. Viktor Hovland and Scottie Scheffler find themselves at 13 under before Jon Rahm and co. at 11 under. If the three at the top can finish strong, they could conceivably trim the number of potential winners to 5-6.

POY conversation heating up

They are running 2-3 behind Collin Morikawa, and they have been the best players all year. Scottie Scheffler stands at 12 under and one behind is Jon Rahm at 11 under after starting his back nine in style. The Spaniard missed a 5-foot chance to get to 12, but he now heads to the difficult 14th looking to hold serve before a potential fast finish.

Morikawa marches ahead

A birdie on the difficult par-4 8th has Collin Morikawa at 3 under for the day and 13 under for the tournament. He leads by one over Scottie Scheffler and could be on the move as he heads to the difficult ninth. This is the most separation we have seen today as congestion is the name of the game at East Lake.

Hovland cards first bogey of the week

It took him more than 20 holes, but Viktor Hovland has finally dropped a shot and returns to -11. He sits one behind Collin Morikawa and Scottie Scheffler and is joined by Russell Henley and Keegan Bradley. If either of the latter two win, would they garner a U.S. pick for the Ryder Cup? I lean no despite what would be a great season.

2024 NCAA baseball tournament bracket, scores: College World Series schedule, dates, regional matchups

The road to the college world series in omaha is underway.

ncaa-trophy.png

The 2024 NCAA baseball tournament is here as the action started Friday in the 64-team bracket. Tennessee, Kentucky, Texas A&M and North Carolina are the top four seeds in the field , and they're trying to reach the eight-team College World Series in June.

Before we jump in, you should know that the structure of the NCAA Baseball Tournament is a bit different from the more familiar hoops variant. Here's what you need to know on that front.

NCAA Baseball Tournament format

  • The first round of play is known as the regional and it's a double-elimination format. Each of the 16 No. 1 seeds hosts its respective four-team regional, when possible. Each of the 16 regionals is seeded one through four. In each region, No. 1 faces No. 4, and No. 2 faces No. 3 on the first day of action. The winners of those two games then play each other, while the losers play an elimination game.
  • The winner of each regional advances to the super regional. The super regional, which includes a total of 16 teams, is a best-of-three series format.
  • The winners of the super regionals -- eight teams in all -- advance to the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.
  • The College World Series is a double-elimination format until the final two teams are left standing. At that point, the slates are wiped clean and it's a best-of-three series to determine the national champion.

NCAA Tournament, College World Series dates

  • Regionals : May 31-June 2
  • Super Regionals : June 6-8 or 7-9
  • College World Series starts : June 14
  • College World Series finals : June 22-24

The field of 64 includes eight national seeds, which you may consider the pre-tourney favorites to reach Omaha. Here are this year's eight national seeds:

  • Texas A&M
  • North Carolina
  • Florida State

If a national seed wins its regional, then it hosts the super regional when possible. Otherwise, the sites of the super regionals will be announced after the regional round concludes. Regional play gets underway on Friday, June 2. Now, here are the matchups for all 16 regionals, plus a reminder that each region is seeded one through four and is hosted by one of the 16 national seeds. You'll note that every top-eight seed this year comes from the SEC or ACC.

Here's a link to NCAA.com's full bracket , which includes region vs. region pairings for the super regionals. Now for some quick hit takeaways on the 64-team field laid out above:

  • It's possible we'll have a repeat this year, as reigning champion LSU is indeed part of the field of 64. College baseball hasn't had a repeat national champion at the Division I level since South Carolina in 2010 and 2011.
  • The SEC this year set an all-time record with 11 tournament teams. Next in line this year is the ACC with eight bids.
  • High Point, Niagara, and Northern Kentucky are all appearing in the Division I tournament for the first time ever.
  • Vanderbilt owns the longest active streak of tournament appearances. This year's bid pushes that streak to 18 straight.

All of the above leads up to the College World Series at Omaha's Charles Schwab Field. So who ya got?
