The Founding Women of Washington College of Law

In 1896, Ellen Spencer Mussey and Emma Gillett were determined to lead the first generation of women into legal practice. Having been denied admission to traditional male-dominated law schools, these two women’s rights advocates recognized their opportunity to make history. That year, Washington College of Law became the first law school in the world founded by women. Two years later, it became the first to have a woman dean and the first to graduate an all-female law school class.

Our founding mothers believed that lawyers had a crucial role to play in the development of society, business, government, and individual freedoms. Today, the Washington College of Law stays true to its founders and is a  top-10 ranked law school for Greatest Resources for Women  by Princeton Review in 2019 5 and continues to be a center for activism and an institution of gender equality. When our students graduate, we ensure that they understand their power and obligation to remove legal barriers to women’s full participation in society.

At AUWCL, We Champion What Matters

Champion What Matters  speaks to the passion and principles that guide this law school community. People here stand up for ideas and ideals and truly want to make a difference. We speak up. We act. We champion the rights of musicians through copyright law. We champion health care legislation. We champion human rights around the world. And we champion environmental policy.

MLS v. JD v. LLM: Which Degree Is Right for You?

There are many factors to consider when deciding which law degree is right for you. American University Washington College of Law offers on-campus and online law programs so you can earn the degree that best fits your lifestyle and career goals. When assessing the differences between a Master of Legal Studies (MLS), Juris Doctor (JD), and Master of Laws (LLM), it is important to consider your career objectives, the time to complete the degree, and the testing requirements.

Our online MLS degree is for professionals who interact with the law — legal documents, contracts, or regulations — in their daily lives but are not interested in practicing law in a courtroom. The flexible nature of our online MLS program allows you to continue to work while earning your degree. It also features industry-specific specializations and certificates for roles that require specific legal expertise in areas such as business, health care, compliance, financial services, or cybersecurity.

The MLS does not require GRE or LSAT scores for admission and can be completed in as little as 12 months.

Juris Doctor

Our on-campus JD degree prepares students to represent clients and become practicing lawyers in the private or public sector. Our JD program requires applicants to submit either an LSAT or GRE score for admission. Upon completion of the degree, you must also study for and pass the Bar Exam in order to become a practicing lawyer.

Our  JD program  takes three years to complete full-time or four years to complete part-time.

Master of Laws

Our on-campus LLM degree is for lawyers looking to advance and enhance their skills in a particular area of law. You can earn an LLM if you already have a JD or an LLB (for foreign attorneys) and are interested in learning new strategies and tools to master a specific area of law, such as advocacy, IP, or international legal studies.

Foreign-trained lawyers can also use the LLM to become eligible to take the Bar Exam in certain U.S. states.  Our LLM degree can usually be completed in one year.

Develop Advanced Legal Skills Needed to Make a Difference

1  The Master of Legal Studies and the associated certificate offerings are not J.D. degree programs and will not qualify a graduate to become a lawyer, practice law, sit for the bar exam, or engage in activities for which a law license is required. Coursework completed in either of these programs is not transferable to a J.D. program. arrow_upward Return to footnote reference 2 U.S. News & World Report . MLS students who complete the health care compliance track will earn the certificate and be eligible to sit for the CHC, CHPC, CHRC, CCEP and/or the CCEP-I exams within 12 months of completing the program. arrow_upward Return to footnote reference 5 Princeton Review  . Iowa law school announces faculty appointment for kate melloy goettel.

The University of Iowa College of Law is pleased to announce that Kate Melloy Goettel, a national leader in immigration law and federal court practice, will join the faculty in August 2024.

Kate Melloy Goettel Headshot

The 2007 Iowa Law School graduate will start and lead an ongoing federal civil rights clinic with an immigration focus. The clinic will teach students civil litigation skills that can be applied to a broad range of legal careers whether at a law firm, government office or agency, or public-interest organization. The cases will focus on impact litigation in the immigration space, representing non-citizens before the federal district and appellate courts.

Goettel has extensive experience practicing immigration law in the nonprofit and government sectors. She has most recently served as senior legal director for the American Immigration Council, leading high-impact class-action and multi-plaintiff litigation under federal statutes and the U.S. Constitution. She previously was associate director of litigation for the National Immigrant Justice Center. In 2019, the Federal Bar Association named her NGO Lawyer of the Year.

From 2009 to 2017, Goettel was a trial attorney and senior litigation counsel for the Office of Immigration Litigation (OIL) in the U.S. Department of Justice, where she litigated cases in nearly 40 federal district courts and handled appeals in the Third, Fourth, Fifth, Ninth, and Tenth Circuit Courts of Appeals, as well as the U.S. Supreme Court. At OIL, she defended federal immigration agencies, trained and supervised attorneys, advised U.S. Attorney’s Offices on civil immigration cases, and served on the inter-agency team that overturned the Defense of Marriage Act in the Supreme Court in 2013 ( United States v. Windsor).

In addition, Goettel is a member of the Executive Board of the Federal Bar Association’s Immigration Law Section and was its 2022-2023 section chair. The association recognized her work and leadership with the 2023 Barry Frager Award for Service to the Federal Bar Association Immigration Law Section.

Goettel is a frequent presenter and lecturer to bar associations and attorney groups. She has appeared in or been quoted by many media outlets and has published articles in immigration-related legal publications.

“I'm thrilled to return to the University of Iowa clinical program, which was instrumental in my legal education,” Goettel said. “The clinic is where I represented my first clients, learned immigration law, and grappled with the challenges of legal practice. I'm excited to work with students as they walk through that learning process, and I'm honored to join such an inspiring group of clinicians.”

Howard university college of engineering and architecture receives $5m record-setting gift from autodesk.

This unrestricted gift will fund student preparation for an AI-Powered workforce – leveraging a new state-of-the-art Design and Make lab.

Howard University College of Engineering and Architecture

June 5, 2024 -- Autodesk Inc., the global leader in software for the Design and Make industries, announced today a $5 million gift to Howard University’s College of Engineering and Architecture (CEA) – the largest unrestricted philanthropic donation in CEA’s history. This record-setting gift will ensure that Howard’s new state-of-the-art Design and Make lab will have the software, cutting-edge equipment, and educators to teach aspiring engineers for years to come.

“We are immensely grateful for Autodesk’s gift to Howard’s College of Engineering and Architecture,” said Howard University president Ben Vinson III, Ph.D. “Howard is a leader in graduating Black engineers, and this gift will expand our ability to provide our students with the best and latest resources throughout the course of their education here. This is increasingly important to us as competition for entry-level jobs continues to increase and as the need for tech and AI skills becomes all the more critical.”

According to research from career and jobs website Zippia, only 3% of mechanical engineers in the United States are Black. Together, Autodesk and the renowned Historically Black College and University (HBCU) are committed to increasing opportunities for this under-represented cohort and ensuring equal opportunities for hands-on software training for future engineers.

“This generous gift, in addition to the previously donated $1M to the Department of Mechanical Engineering, is a result of our exemplary industry-academia partnership with Autodesk for the last six years, which has already resulted in curriculum development with industry-grade software, and mechanical engineering graduates with advanced skills. All of these efforts will be used for the long-term development and sustainability of establishing a diverse engineering workforce,” said Nadir Yilmaz, Ph.D., P.E., professor and chair of  Howard University’s Department of Mechanical Engineering .

Today, 41% of industry professionals say the ability to implement and work with AI is the top technical skill they are hiring for over the next three years.* Educating students with experiential technology training is table stakes to ensure early success in their careers.

“At Autodesk, our software not only helps people design and make things; we also help shape tomorrow’s design and make leaders,” said Andrew Anagnost, president and CEO of Autodesk . “It’s imperative that educators and industry leaders work together to prepare students for an ever-changing workforce, and technology companies like Autodesk have a critical role to play in bridging the gap. We’re honored to support Howard University’s students on their journeys to building the future.”

Howard University will unveil the state-of-the-art lab in fall 2024 to serve as a hub for interdisciplinary collaboration across the University.

The lab will also support K-12 activities to inspire young students to explore STEM through the incorporation of SAE International’s award-winning, hands-on A World in Motion® (AWIM) PreK-12 STEM program in partnership with the SAE Foundation, which supports equitable access to STEM through SAE’s AWIM Program and has reached more than 6 million students since the inception of the program in 1986.

“The opening of the lab will enable students to transform their budding design ideas into working prototypes. Through their use of the lab’s design and making technology and peer collaborations, students will have immersive learning experiences that connect theoretical knowledge with real-world problems that require diverse teams. The opportunities afforded by a facility like this are a driver for innovation,” said John M. M. Anderson, Ph.D., dean of CEA .

Autodesk’s gift in support of the lab is in part a result of the longstanding partnership between Autodesk and Dr. Nadir Yilmaz, professor and chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Howard University. Dr. Yilmaz and his department faculty have been leveraging Autodesk software in their classrooms for the past six years. Autodesk proudly offers its software for free to students and educators worldwide in its commitment to prepare the next generation to design and make the future.

Rankings released! QS World University Rankings 2025

QS World University Rankings 2025

The QS World University Rankings 2025 are now live !

Being the first of its kind to incorporate both employability and sustainability factors into the methodology , the QS World University Rankings provides the higher education sector, governments and students a reliable rankings system that identifies the world’s leading universities in a range of performance metrics.

This year’s ranking is the largest – featuring 1,500 universities from 106 countries and territories across the globe. For the thirteenth consecutive year Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US has placed first.

Who are the top ten universities in the QS World University Rankings 2025?

1. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), US

2. Imperial College London, UK

3. University of Oxford, UK

4. Harvard University, US

5. University of Cambridge, UK

6. Stanford University, US

7. ETH Zürich – Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Switzerland

8. National University of Singapore (NUS), Singapore

9. University College London, UK

10. California Institute of Technology (Caltech), US

Notably, Imperial College London has moved up four places – the biggest improvement among the top ten.  Their progress is attributed to several factors, including their improvement in the ‘Sustainability’ category, (scoring 99.7 out of 100 overall) and in various research metrics including ‘Citations per faculty’, which they earned 86.5 last year, compared to a total of 93.9 this year, for example.

New entrants

There are 21 newly ranked institutions in the QS World University Rankings 2025, with the highest debutant being the American University of Ras Al Khaimah (AURAK) in the United Arab Emirates, with a ranking of 485th – the University scored 100 in indicators ‘International students’ and ‘International faculty’.

Global highlights of the QS World University Rankings 2025

tour american university law school

China and India’s universities have seen the biggest upward movements for both the number of institutions increasing their ranking position and for the number of significant moves (defined as 10 places or more) in the QS World University Rankings 2025.

Other highlights in institutional performance globally are:

The UK’s strongest performance is in the ‘International Student Ratio’ indicator. It achieves the world’s second-highest average score among countries with ten or more ranked universities, behind only Saudi Arabia – underscoring the global appeal of UK higher education institutions and their ability to attract a diverse student body.

The US continues to boast one of the world’s most renowned higher education systems for their reputation, according to employers and academics – this is clear in the ranking as four of the top ten universities, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Harvard University, Stanford University and University of California, Berkeley (UCB) earn 100 in the ‘Academic reputation’ indicator.

Genvieve Lakier, a law professor at the University of Chicago, speaks Friday outside the University of Chicago’s Levi Hall in Hyde Park, where students and faculty gathered to speak out against the university’s decision to withhold degrees of four graduating seniors “due to a university disciplinary process because they ‘may have been involved’ in the Gaza solidarity encampment on the quad,” according to a news release.

UChicago faculty and alderpeople criticize school for withholding encampment protesters' degrees

At a press conference friday morning, denis hirschfeldt, a professor and president of the school’s chapter of the american association of university professors, said the school’s disciplinary process had lost “all credibility.”.

Faculty and students at the University of Chicago claimed at a press conference Friday the university is circumventing its own disciplinary process to withhold degrees from pro-Palestinian student protesters.

Fourth-year student Youssef Hasweh said he and three other seniors — Rayna Acha, Kelly Hui and a fourth student who declined to give their name — received an email Friday saying their degrees would be withheld until the resolution of a school disciplinary process related to their involvement in a pro-Palestinian encampment on campus.

Students haven’t been informed of what the alleged misconduct was other than it was related to complaints made about the encampment. University officials have said the students can still walk at graduation, but their degrees are being held until the process is finished, which has no clear timeline.

“Here at the University of Chicago, the free speech university, talking about Palestine is not free but comes with a hefty price,” Hasweh said at a Friday morning press conference with faculty and students. “I’ve lost my degree and all current employment offers I was interviewing for. I’ve lost a future, for now, as a graduate of UChicago.”

Later, Denis Hirschfeldt, a mathematics professor at UChicago and president of the school’s chapter of the American Association of University Professors, said the school’s disciplinary process had lost “all credibility.”

Denis Hirschfeldt, a mathematics professor at the University of Chicago, speaks outside the University of Chicago’s Levi Hall in Hyde Park, where students and faculty gathered to speak out against the university’s decision to withhold degrees of four graduating seniors “due to a university disciplinary process because they ‘may have been involved’ in the Gaza solidarity encampment on the quad,” according to a press release, Friday, May 31, 2024.

Hirschfeldt was on the faculty senate that drafted the rules for the disciplinary process in 2017. He claims an ad hoc chair, chemistry professor Bryan Dickinson, was appointed by provost Katherine Baicker without the consultation of the sitting chairs or faculty senate after the complaints had already been made. He called it “clear interference” and a “massive conflict of interest.”

University policy defers actions to the sitting chair, and doesn’t mention any process for appointing an ad hoc chair for certain cases. The university didn’t immediately respond to requests for clarification or comment.

“[Baicker’s interference] has turned a faculty-led disciplinary process into an administration-led exercise in punishment,” Hirschfeldt said.

The press conference came within hours of 16 alderpeople sending a letter to Baicker urging her to reconsider the disciplinary measures.

“We are concerned that these students’ degrees are being withheld without appropriate process or adequate bases in evidence; that the withholding of these degrees constitutes a grave repression of free expression in contradiction to the University’s commitments to free speech and First Amendment rights; and that this repression forms part of a pattern of universities targeting students for making their voices heard,” the alderpeople wrote in the letter.

At the encampment, students demanded the university to disclose its investments, divest from those with ties to Israel and arms companies, and help to repair the damage done to Gaza’s universities. The protesters also wanted the school to stop development on the South Side and to put money toward repairing the “harm” it had caused to the area through prior investments.

UCDIPLOMAS-060124_10.jpg

Youssef Hasweh, one of the University of Chicago graduates whose degrees are being withheld by the university, speaks outside the University of Chicago’s Levi Hall in Hyde Park, where students and faculty gathered to speak out against the university’s decision to withhold degrees of four graduating seniors “due to a university disciplinary process because they ‘may have been involved’ in the Gaza solidarity encampment on the quad,” according to a press release, Friday, May 31, 2024.

“We are all complicit in every death in Gaza if the bombs being dropped are made with our tuition dollars,” Hasweh said. “We don’t deserve a graduation made from the profits of investing in death.”

The students having their degrees withheld said they plan to walk at graduation Saturday, displaying empty diploma cases as they do.

“There’s no class of 2024 in Gaza,” Acha said. “We will fight to get our degrees so we can continue to fight for Palestine.”

Cleve McDowell became the first Black American to attend the University of Mississippi School of Law. He and James Meredith roomed together on campus. But university officials expelled him after they caught him with a pistol for self-protection. He began carrying the weapon after federal marshals left campus, no longer protecting him or Meredith.

McDowell went on to receive his law degree from Texas Southern University in Houston and returned to the Mississippi Delta, where he served as field secretary for the Mississippi NAACP and later worked as a public defender. He and other civil rights leaders argued that unpunished killers from the civil rights movement should be punished, just as Nazi war criminals had been. He died in 1997.

A leading voice on the protection of civilians and Canadian foreign policy, Jennifer M. Welsh has been named the next director of McGill University’s Max Bell School of Public Policy, following an international search. Welsh will be taking over from founding director, economist Christopher Ragan , in January 2025.

Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Lisa Shapiro , said: “Prof. Jennifer Welsh, with her extensive experience, distinguished scholarship, her commitment to the Max Bell School of Public Policy’s distinctive emphasis on the practice of developing and implementing policy, and her vision both to solidify the School’s strength in the Canadian policy context and to extend its reach into a wider international policy community promises an exciting next phase in the development of the Max Bell School of Public Policy. We are all delighted that she is taking on this important role.”

Welsh was cross-appointed in 2019 as the Canada 150 Research Chair in Global Governance and Security at McGill University in the Department of Political Science and the Max Bell School of Public Policy, and has served as Director of McGill’s Centre for International Peace and Security Studies. She was previously Professor and Chair in International Relations at the European University Institute and Professor in International Relations at the University of Oxford, where she co-founded the Oxford Institute for Ethics, Law and Armed Conflict. From 2013-2016, she served as Assistant Secretary General and Special Adviser to the UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, on the Responsibility to Protect. She currently sits as a member of the IDP Protection Expert Group, co-led by the UN Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights of Internally Displaced Persons and UNHCR.

Welsh’s research focuses on contemporary challenges in global governance, conflict management, and Canadian foreign policy, including humanitarian action, collective responses to genocide and war crimes, the protection of civilians in armed conflict, and migration and displacement. Her most recent books include The Individualization of War (2023), Civilian Protective Agency in Violent Settings (2023), and The Return of History: Conflict, Migration and Geopolitics in the 21st century (2016), which was based on her CBC Massey Lectures. As Director of CIPSS at McGill, she has led several collaborative research projects with Canadian and international scholars, built a vibrant community of faculty and graduate students interested in global affairs and Canada’s role in the world, and co-directed a Canada-wide research network on Women, Peace, and Security. Jennifer has frequently provided input into policy initiatives for the Canadian government and the United Nations, as well as for international NGOs, and is co-host of the bilingual podcast, Tour de Table. Her research and policy engagement have been recognized through her election as Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and as International Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. She sits on the Advisory Boards of the Auschwitz Institute for Peace and Reconciliation and The Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect, and co-chairs the Committee on International Security of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Welsh has a BA from the University of Saskatchewan in Political Science, and a M.Phil. and D.Phil. from the University of Oxford, where she studied as a Rhodes Scholar.

LSAC - Law School Admission Council

University of Idaho College of Law

The information on this page was provided by the law school.

Official Guide to ABA-Approved JD Programs

Introduction.

The College of Law, established in 1909, has been a member of the  AALS  since 1914 and has been accredited by the  ABA  since 1925. As Idaho’s leader in legal education, the College of Law emphasizes quality over quantity and is founded on collegiality and a dedication to the highest ideals of a noble profession.

Students have the option to complete all three years in either Moscow or Boise. These two options expand the Juris Doctor curriculum with emphasis areas correlated to the interdisciplinary assets of Moscow’s location as part of the broader University of Idaho campus and Boise’s commercial and government connections.

College of Law students benefit from an attentive, dedicated, and accessible faculty as well as the unique opportunity to combine residential university community and metropolitan living and learning.

Enrollment/Student Body

With an overall enrollment around 300, students at the College of Law have a wide variety of backgrounds and life experiences. Students enroll from across the country, representing almost 100 colleges and universities, 24 different states, and several foreign countries. Approximately 60 percent of our students are Idaho residents. The College of Law welcomes and actively seeks diversity, with particular attention to students of color and those who have overcome socioeconomic disadvantage. Due to our highly selective admission process and positive learning environment, including an academic success program run by a licensed attorney, academic attrition is less than 3 percent.

Technology, Library, and Physical Facilities

Over 40 major research databases and wireless capability throughout the Menard Law building in Moscow allow students to quickly access a large collection of electronic resources with the most up-to-date legal information. The Law Library houses a print collection of Anglo-American and international law materials, with in-depth collections to support the law school’s signature areas of emphasis in Business Law and Entrepreneurship, Native American Law, Natural Resources and Environmental Law, and our clinical programs. Located in the Idaho Law and Justice Learning Center in Boise, as the result of an innovative collaboration with the Idaho Supreme Court, the College of Law assumed management of the Idaho State Law Library. The State Law Library currently houses a collection of print and electronic resources to support the research needs of Idaho attorneys and judges, the public, and the law students and faculty.

All first-year students are required to take courses in Legal Research and Writing, Contracts, Criminal Law, Torts, Property, Civil Procedure, and Constitutional Law. After the first year, students must take Professional Responsibility, Evidence, Administrative Law, Business Associations, and Constitutional Law II, and they may choose to pursue an area of emphasis. The College of Law provides emphases in natural resources and environmental law, business law and entrepreneurship, and Native American law.

Practical Skills

The College of Law places great importance on public service and the development of practical skills. We require all students to complete at least 50 hours of preapproved pro bono service before graduation, which allows students to engage in substantial, law-related public service work.

There are six live-client clinics available at the College of Law:

  • Main Street Clinic (Moscow)
  • Immigration Clinic (Moscow)
  • Small Business Legal Clinic (Boise)
  • Tax Clinic (Boise)
  • Economic Development Clinic (Boise)
  • Mediation Clinic (Moscow)

Students also sharpen their practical skills through participation in the summer externship program, by completing a semester in practice externship, and/or by competing in a wide variety of faculty- and lawyer-supervised skills competitions.

Concurrent Degrees

Students may pursue:

  • Concurrent JD/MS/PhD in Water Resources (Law, Management, and Policy) : The Water Resources graduate program provides interdisciplinary study options through the University of Idaho Water Resources Program to address complex water resources issues. We communicate across disciplines to broaden and deepen students’ understanding of these problems. The concurrent JD/MS may be completed in four years, and the JD/PhD may be completed in six. Available in Moscow.
  • Concurrent JD/MBA (Master of Business Administration) : The program allows students to earn the JD and MBA in four years, rather than the usual five. Available in Boise.
  • Concurrent JD/MS Environmental Science : The concurrent JD/MS in Environmental Science, offered in conjunction with the University of Idaho Environmental Science Program, is designed to give students technical knowledge in natural resources and environmental science coupled with professional expertise provided by training in law. Available in Moscow.
  • Concurrent JD/MS degree in Bioregional Planning and Community Design:  The concurrent JD/MS in Bioregional Planning and Community Design degree, offered in conjunction with the University of Idaho Bioregional Planning and Community Design Program, offers the opportunity to combine the studies of law, science, policy, engineering, and social science to help create a community of “planner-lawyers” who can better serve clients in a planning context. Available in Moscow.
  • Concurrent JD/Professional Science Master’s : The concurrent JD/PSM degree program through the University of Idaho Professional Science Master’s Program is an interdisciplinary, nonthesis degree that combines rigorous study in science with training in management and communication skills. Available in Moscow.
  • Concurrent JD/Master of Accounting  degree in cooperation with the University of Idaho College of Business and Economics and  dual JD/Master of Accounting, Taxation Emphasis  degree in cooperation with Boise State University. These programs are particularly valuable for students interested in practicing tax law.

Applications are accepted beginning in October preceding the fall when an applicant intends to matriculate. Our law program is full time although we offer an adjusted curriculum for students who cannot attend class full time. Applicants must submit college transcripts and letters of recommendation through LSAC’s Credential Assembly Service (CAS). The application priority deadline is March 15, but we recommend late-fall application. Applications submitted after March 15 will be reviewed, but timely applications will receive priority consideration. The Admission Committee looks at each applicant holistically, including, but not limited to, LSAT score, academic record and background, writing ability, personal statement, work and life experiences, and recommendations.

Student Activities

Students can join one or more of UI’s 30 active student organizations. The Student Bar Association represents student interests, both educational and social. The  Idaho Law Review , which covers topics ranging from state and regional problems to national and international issues, and the  Idaho Critical Legal Studies Journal,  an online journal of critical legal studies, give students valuable writing and editing experience. The Board of Student Advocates and the Law Students for Appropriate Dispute Resolution coordinate intramural competitions and provide opportunities for students to participate in national competitions that build professional skills. Other groups include the American Civil Liberties Union, the Latino Law Caucus, the Federalist Society, the Multicultural Law Caucus, the Native American Law Students Association, OUTLaw, the J. Reuben Clark Law Society, and the Women’s Law Caucus.

Career Development

The assistant dean (in Moscow) and director (in Boise) are licensed attorneys who are active members of the legal community, allowing them to build relationships with alumni and employers. Both use their experience to provide one-on-one counseling, arrange OCIs and employer visits, host a variety of workshops, cultivate networking opportunities, and review student résumés and cover letters.
