Tour AD DI vs. IZ: Which is Better?

Golf is a game of precision that requires deliberate effort. While every golf accessory significantly influences game performance, shafts rank very high.

They come in different sizes, types, and styles, but the purpose remains the same: allowing players to strike the ball effectively and control ball flight more.

With the wide range of golf shaft options, you need an informed decision to make the right choice.

Graphite Designs shafts are often recommended because of their quality materials, efficient ball control, and excellent feel.

Hence, we’ll compare two of its designs: Tour AD DI and IZ, establishing their similarities and differences to enable you to choose the better one.

Tour AD DI vs. IZ: Overview

Graphite Design is a reputable organization that produces a wide range of shafts for golfers.

The company is one of the front-runners of shaft technology in the industry.

Every year, the brand introduces new designs that offer distinct attributes. The Tour AD shaft lineup is expanding significantly to satisfy both new and experienced golfers.

The Tour AD DI is an earlier shaft design by the brand. The latest release is the Tour AD IZ which features a sleek finish and stealthy appearance.

While some professionals think both shafts have similar specifications and performance, Graphite Designs claim they have different features, but the latest design is not a direct replacement of the former.

According to the brand, the Tour AD IZ lies between the lower launching Tour AD TP and higher launching DI, courtesy of its slightly stiffer tip and midsection and softer butt section.

Let’s establish the differences between the two shaft designs.

Tour AD DI vs. IZ: Differences

Tour AD DI vs. IZ

Generally, both shaft designs are similar, but Tour AD IZ has a softer tip. It also has a bit higher balance point, which makes it slightly counterbalanced.

As such, it’ll play better in heavier retail heads, plus it will improve the overall ball feel.

It doesn’t kick as its predecessor does. It typically transfers energy from the handle to the golf club head.

Let’s differentiate between them using some factors as follows:

Flex is the amount of bend a golf club gives during a swing session. It directly affects the amount of bend a shaft will have.

The greater the flex, the more the shaft will bend, and vice versa.

The flex option is a significant difference between the two shaft designs.

Both avail different types of flex options. The AD DI features a stiff flex option, while the AD IZ has the Regular option.

Concerning flex, the AD DI will have less bend amount compared to the AD IZ.

If you have a slower swing speed, the flexible shafts will be your best choice, so you should choose the AD DI shaft design.

However, if you have a faster swing speed, stiffer shafts will fit you better. Hence, it would help if you chose the Graphite Design Tour AD IZ.

There’s no difference between both shafts’ launch angles. They both feature a high launch angle, meaning the shaft will assist the golfer in getting quality height on the ball right off impact.

If you’re looking to achieve more ball height, both will be a good deal for you, as whichever you choose won’t make any difference.

The spin attribute is another area where both shafts are the same. They feature the same low spin options, meaning you can keep the ball closer to the course surface.

If you want to achieve this, either shaft option will help you get that. However, if you wish for a higher spin option, you should explore other opportunities elsewhere.

Both shafts seem to exhibit a similar feel. The brand website claims the AD IZ is Firm in the butt, medium in the center, and Firm+ in the tip.

Their midsection is also similar.

Regarding appearance, the AD IZ design features a matte black and orange color scheme which is ideal for almost every season. The AD DI design is the inverse of this style.

The legal status of any golf accessory is another essential factor to consider before buying it.

The USGA has strict equipment rules every golf equipment piece must obey before being deemed legal.

Both shaft designs conform to all these rules, making them legal for use in any golf-level competition.

Tour AD DI vs. IZ

Both are fantastic golf shafts with similarities and differences, as established above. Realistically, there might not be a better one in all ramifications.

The better one will depend on what each golfer wants and their preference.

As discussed above, they differ in some factors, including flex, feel, and look, making them ideal for different target audiences.

Depending on the swing speed and preferences, players might choose differently. Tailor your wants to the strengths of each shaft design and choose the best one accordingly.

Graphite Design Tour AD HD Shaft Review

Graphite design tour ad hd.

In the most surprising and wacky year of my lifetime, one constant showed up right on time. The Q4 release of a new Graphite Design shaft, that is! For 2021, they’ve again modernized one of their most popular profiles and given us the Tour AD HD. The Tour AD HD will play firm throughout the handle, midsection, and tip – giving it a “one piece” feel, but still enough action to be fun. As always, it’s packed with cutting edge materials and tech, and looks amazing.

ad hd 2

What I like about Graphite Design is that they’re consistently bold in the graphics department. Consistent in that they keep the same paint schemes for nearly their entire lineup (art deco-style lettering and usually a two-tone coloring on each side of a distinctive ring pattern.) Bold in that they often choose vibrant, eye catching, solid colors to make their shafts instantly noticeable.

The Tour AD HD – the shaft that’s going to take your game into “Hyper Drive” clearly delivers in the visual appeal department. The mostly matte white finish comes with subtly sparkly light blue lettering with some black accents. This thing contrasts amazing with a dark clubhead, and of course, everyone will know you’re gaming a Graphite Design on that first tee.

ad hd 3

How Does it Feel?

The days of shaft companies offering merely a high, medium, low launch option are of course long gone. We all know that. What Graphite Design has done is create a diverse menu of shafts that caters to the infinite number of golf swings out there. They have a shaft that matches your swing characteristics AND what you’re looking for in feel. Adding to that, they’re now updating many of their most popular profiles with new materials and techniques. For this edition, the Tour AD HD is packed with Graphite Design’s exclusive Fast Taper Technology, TORAYCA M40X carbon-fiber in the mid through tip sections as well as T1100G material to add stability.

The Tour AD HD will feel firm from tip to grip. The designers created it to have a “one piece feel” that users of the ultra yellow Tour AD MT will find very familiar. While I have not hit the AD MT much, I’ll agree that the AD HD feels pretty stable throughout the whole swing. There’s not a lot of give in the hands, and you’ll get a tiny little kick near the tip when you impact the ball. You are most definitely NOT going to get the super smooth feel from this shaft like you will with an AD DI, but I still love it.

ad hd 6

On-Course Performance

From swing number one, I knew the Tour AD HD was a winner. It gave me exactly the mid launch and mid/low spin that I like to see. I have a downward angle of attack (too much) and any extra spin causes me trouble. My preferred shot shape is typically a mid or low bunt type shot, and the AD HD lets me hit it where I need to hit it. I was able to take it to Sand Valley in Wisconsin and got to play on perfect firm and fast turf. This thing was letting me hit perfect, mid/slow screamers all weekend. I probably hit two bad drives during that visit, and I’m often what we at Driving Range Heroes call a “COMPLETE HEAD CASE” from the tee box.

One thing I will hammer home again is to get someone that knows what they’re doing to fit you into this shaft. The Tour AD HD in 6X feels stiffer than my beloved AD DI in 7X. Actually, that AD DI is a bit of a Frankenstein. I bought it off the ‘Bay because I can’t ever pass up a good deal and I “needed” another AD DI. It was a mangled, misrepresented item in that it was originally a fairway shaft that was tip trimmed 1.5” TOO MUCH then sold as a driver shaft. Well, I extended it and tossed it in my driver and it’s awesome. However, it’s still not as stiff feeling as the AD HD. Moral of the story – figure it out right the first time.

ad hd 5

Final Thoughts – Graphite Design Tour AD HD

The new Graphite Design Tour AD HD plays firm but responsive. For me, it flies far, feels awesome, and looks super, icy cool. As a guy that gets to try a bunch of new golf shafts every year, it’s a rare occasion where I will say “this one just fits me and I’m keeping it for a while” – and that’s exactly what I’m going to do with the AD HD. The Tour AD HD will be available at your favorite club fitter on October 1st. Pack some peanut butter sandwiches into that staff bag and get in line now.

Graphite Design Tour AD IZ Hybrid Shaft Review

More in reviews:.

Voice Caddie Laser Fit Rangefinder

50 Words or Less

The Graphite Design Tour AD IZ hybrid shaft is remarkably consistent.  Stable tip provides control while the smooth feel in the upper section keeps you from over swinging.

tour ad hd vs iz

Introduction

There are times on the course when you feel completely locked in.  For most of us, those times aren’t typically the tee shot on a long par 3 or a risky approach shot on a par 5.  With their Tour AD IZ hybrid shaft, Graphite Design hopes to change that and get your long game “ I n the Z one” more often.

The hybrid version of the Tour AD IZ is painted exactly like the wood version.   Its combination of white, black, and orange makes it an uncanny fit for my Jack Skellington hybrid cover.

Aesthetically, I’ve always liked Graphite Design’s shafts.  The branding is toned down, there are no distractions near the club head, but they often use bold colors.  With the AD IZ hybrid shaft, there’s just a splash of orange, so only those in the know will recognize what you’ve got in your bag.

tour ad hd vs iz

My recollection of the Tour AD IZ wood shaft (review HERE ) was that it provided a smooth feel without a major kick .  I found the same thing in the AD IZ hybrid shaft.  The butt and mid section are softer than the tip.  That’s where you’ll feel a controlled energy transfer from your hands down the shaft.

The tip of the AD IZ is rock solid .  Even on mishits, you won’t feel the shaft twist in your hands.  For me, that strong tip section allows me to feel confident that I’m in total control of the shot.

NOTE: There are two different profiles in the Tour AD IZ hybrid shaft .  The 85 and 95 gram versions are stiffer in the tip and softer in the mid and butt.  The 65 and 75 gram versions are stiffer in the tip and mid, softer in the butt.  My comments relate to the 85 gram version that I tested.

tour ad hd vs iz

Performance

As soon as I got the Tour AD IZ hybrid shaft in hand, I loaded it into the new Tour Edge Exotics CBX 119 .  I loved the head but the stock shaft wasn’t an ideal fit.  With the Tour AD IZ installed, the CBX 119 hybrid is making a beeline for a spot in my bag.

In my first launch monitor session with the Tour AD IZ hybrid shaft, what jumped out at me was the consistency of the spin numbers .  Despite a limited warm up and no prior testing with the shaft, the spin stayed in a 300 RPM range shot after shot.  The value of that consistency on the course is immense: no ballooning shots, no bullets that run through greens, and no wild shot shapes.

When I looked beyond the spin, I saw the same consistency in launch and distance.  With the same mid launch, mid/low spin, and high ball speed, I was seeing every shot land within a 10 yard window .  For me, that kind of repeatability with a hybrid is a game changer.  What’s more, there were no wild, unpredictable shot shapes.

The Tour AD IZ comes in four weights .  The 65 and 75 gram models are softer and promote mid/high launch with mid/low spin.  These weights are available in R2, R1, and Stiff.  The 85 and 95 gram versions are stiffer, designed for mid launch and low spin.  These weights are offered in Regular, Stiff, and X-Flex.

tour ad hd vs iz

Because of the many different ways that people use hybrids, not to mention the wide variety of swings, there is no single perfect hybrid shaft.  That said, for me, the Graphite Design Tour AD IZ is as close to perfect as anything I’ve found.  The feel is great, and the consistency is unmatched.

Fantastic to see this. I got fitted for a drive this winter at club champion and have the AD IZ 6s in my driver so was interested to hear about the hybrid shaft. After your cbx119 review I’ve really wanted to try the 3w and hydrids with the IZ series just don’t have a great way to do it without paying for another fitting so I was happy to see you review the combo. 👍

' src=

I currently use a Tour AD XC 6X in my Driver and It works great. I also use Aerotech 115X in my irons. I swing the driver at 105. I am thinking or ordering a PXG 19 degree Gen x2 hybrid with this shaft. I am thinking a 95X shaft might be too much for me. I am wondering if you would recommend the 8X. I am also concerned it might be too light for me. I currently use a Tour AD HY shaft 95S in an 818 titleist hybrid and its good, but thinking the X would give me some more consistency.

' src=

Unfortunately there’s no way for me to credibly recommend a shaft over the internet. My best advice is to get a fitting where you can test those options.

REVIEW: Graphite Design Tour AD HD Shaft

tour ad hd vs iz

The new  Tour AD HD  also has the feel you have come to love from a Tour AD shaft. I’m sure this has to do with Graphite Design’s proprietary  F ast  T aper  T echnology (FTT) design. There is a nice loading and unloading feel to the shaft during the swing that makes the Tour AD HD very smooth, but incredibly responsive. With a lower torque number the acts like a very stiff board, but doesn’t feel that way. Feel is always subject to the person making the comments, but this shaft is one of the smoothest I’ve tested from the Tour AD line up without feeling too flexible. The profile is described as Firm Butt Section – Firm Mid Section and Firm+ Tip Section. I like how all the shafts for Graphite Design can be compared by Stiffness using the 3 zones of the shaft. Before you even try the shaft you can identify the key elements you need for the best fit. In playing the last 5 Tour AD models, they have been very accurate in the description of flex and corresponding feel.

tour ad hd vs iz

The new Tour AD HD utilizes the same TORAYCA ® T1100G carbon-fiber pre-preg with NANOALLOY ® technology as the past few Tour AD shafts. This provides the tip section of the shaft with additional shaft stability, exceptional feel and precise ball control.  The Tour AD HD also utilizes brand new TORAYCA ® M40X carbon-fiber pre-preg in the Mid to Tip section of the shaft as did the XC model in 2020. This strength in transition from Mid to Tip helps create a Mid Launch and Low/Mid Spin characteristics, as well as give the shaft rotational stability for added consistency in shot dispersion.  Along with TORAYCA ® and NANOALLOY ® is Graphite Design’s proprietary Material Stiffness Integration (MSI) design philosophy and technology. The way each layer of material is used helps create the unmistakable feel and performance in all Graphite Design shafts. This attention to detail in production is what makes Graphite Design one of the industry leaders.

tour ad hd vs iz

I love testing new equipment, because my swing is very repeatable. I don’t drive the ball super long distances, but I certainly find more fairways than I miss. The Tour AD HD shaft was a pleasant surprise because I was already playing the Tour AD XC in my Gamer driver with great success, only to have it replaced with more optimal numbers on the course. Adding distance to my driver was great, but the best part of the HD shaft is the consistency. Even mis-hits are flying straighter with more distance. I’m sure that’s why every shaft has (ACCURACY & DISTANCE) printed on it.

tour ad hd vs iz

If you have a Tour AD shaft in any of your clubs, then you know how good they are and why the New Tour AD HD will be talked about. For the last few years Graphite Design has released an award worthy shaft and 2021 is no exception. The Mid Launch with Low to Low/Mid Spin is a great fit for someone needing a penetrating ball flight.  Find an  Authorized Dealer  to help you get the right Tour AD HD in your club.

WRX Spotlight: Graphite Design Tour AD IZ shafts

Product: Graphite Design Tour AD IZ shafts

Pitch: From Graphite Design: “The Tour AD IZ, like all of the premium Tour AD wood shafts, utilizes premium, aerospace quality 50t carbon-fiber materials in order to deliver the best feeling and performing shaft available to golfers. The Tour AD IZ shaft has a firm stiffness starting at the handle, and medium center section and a firm+ tip profile to promote a high launch angle and low ball spin rates. The Tour AD IZ also utilizes TORAYCA T1100G carbon-fiber pre-preg with NANOALLOY technology in the tip section of the shaft for additional shaft stability, exceptional feel and precise ball control.”

Our take on Graphite Design Tour AD IZ shafts

Director of Original Content Johnny Wunder on the Tour AD IZ shafts: Shaft tested GD Tour AD IZ 7TX in Cobra F9 Speedback 8 degrees at 45 inches.

The IZ shaft is one that actually snuck up on me a bit. In my experience with Graphite Design shafts, I have always had trouble finding one that was stable enough to satisfy the days my swing wasn’t on point. What I mean by that is that these shafts have always been low-spin heaters for me. Solid ball speeds, good carry, low spin, good flight windows, etc. What I found, though, was when they got off track for me, they really got off track.

The IZ for me changed that for me on two levels.

  • My dispersion was REALLY tight, while my spin went up and ball speed went up.
  • Carry distance was down by about five yards, which is no big deal, but overall it was a total flip from prior experiences. Mishits seem to hold their line as well while not losing too much yardage which is a combo of shaft and head.

tour ad hd vs iz

From a feel perspective, the IZ has a smooth non-boardy profile, and I didn’t feel like I was having to work that hard to find the middle of the face, which for “sweet spotting” is a BIG factor in landing on shafts for me. If I was to game one, I’d probably mess with the tipping a bit, and perhaps go to a 60 TX. but overall it’s definitely in consideration for the summertime gamer.

Graphite Design has always made quality components, and with this offering, I think they have a shaft that could be a good way in for people who stayed away from these shafts for whatever reason. If I was going to give comps from what I feel, I’d say Tensei CK Pro Blue, Accra TZ5, and Fujikura Ventus..so basically the cream of the crop, in my opinion.

Gaming the IZ 75 in an M5 and very pleased. Feel is great, dispersion tight and it holds up when I try to knock the cover off the ball!

Designed to give golfers a versatile option in the gap between the fairway woods and long irons, Wilson today announced its new, hybrid-alternative, better-player-focused Staff Model RB utility in three loft offerings (18, 21, and 24 degrees).

  • Related:  Wilson introduces new Staff Blades and Staff CB irons

Drawing on Wilson Advisory Staff member input (including Padraig Harrington, who is gaming the club), the RB is crafted with a thin topline and sleek look favored by better players. Engineers strategically distributed weight to the toe and sole of the club in this “mid-to-low” CG club for greater resistance to twisting and improved forgiveness.

tour ad hd vs iz

Additionally, the high-strength C300 maraging steel-face club is hollow-bodied for greater ball speed and aerodynamics. Engineers strategically placed rib structures within the head for better stability, and thus performance, on mishits. Perhaps most interestingly to WRXers, Wilson mentions this improves acoustics on the hollow-bodied (and non-foam-filled) design.

“The professional athletes and elite amateurs with whom we tested all commented on its amazing  soft feel at impact and optimized ball flight,” said Bob Thurman, Global General Manager of Golf  and Vice President of Research & Development at Wilson. “We feel we created something special for  golfers in search of that easy-to-hit distance club.”

One of the largest weight and flex ranges of all premium golf shafts , the Tour AD IZ begins in the 40-gram regular flexes and ends with 80-gram tour extra-stiff with everything in between. Each model is billed as a high launch, low spin shaft. The butt section of the Tour AD IZ is firm. The midsection is medium in stiffness while the tip is firm+ for added explosiveness.

The Graphite Design Tour AD IZ shaft is made with TORAYCA T100G carbon fiber pre-preg and NANOALLOY technology. The combination of these materials creates a firm butt section, medium midsection, and a firm+ tip section. The balance throughout the Tour AD IZ golf shaft isa product of the Material Stiffness Integration, or MSI, that is unique to Graphite Design. 50 ton ultra-premium aerospace grade materials give the Tour AD IZ shaft more feel without compromising stability through impact. Graphite Design has create a golf shaft that can fit almost all levels of golfer and all swing speeds.

The Graphite Design Tour AD IZ – “Into the Zone” designed and manufactured at the Graphite Design Japan factory headquarters, has a very stealthy look to it in black with white/orange accents and a sleek new matte finish. The Tour AD IZ shafts are available in 40g R2, R1 and S flex, 50g R2, R, S and X flex, 60g SR, S, X and TX flex, 70g S, X and TX flex and 80g S and X flex.

The Tour AD IZ , like all of the premium Tour AD wood shafts, utilizes premium, aerospace quality 50t carbon-fiber materials in order to deliver the best feeling and performing shaft available to golfers.

The new Tour AD IZ shaft has a firm stiffness starting at the handle, and medium center section and a firm+ tip profile to promote a high launch angle and low ball spin rates. The new Tour AD IZ also utilizes TORAYCA T1100G carbon-fiber pre-preg with NANOALLOY ® technology in the tip section of the shaft for additional shaft stability, exceptional feel and precise ball control.

I have played Graphite Design shafts for over 5 years and can echo just how smooth these shafts are. I love the feel and performance I have gotten out of every Tour AD shaft I have played. The Tour AD IZ is possibly the best feeling shaft I have ever swung. Golfers will quickly recognize the signature orange so many associates with Tiger and his Tour AD DI but the Tour AD IZ is a surprising blend of performance and power.

Graphite Design Tour AD IZ Review

The Graphite Design Tour AD IZ-6 Driver Shaft is a custom-assembled shaft upgrade that offers exceptional stability, improved energy transfer, and a smooth feel. It's designed to help golfers achieve greater distances while maintaining control. But what sets this driver shaft apart is its lightweight nature. Made from premium graphite, the Tour AD IZ-6 is as light as a feather. And you know what that means - increased swing speed and distance. Say goodbye to those frustrating short shots and hello to long, powerful drives that will leave your opponents in awe.

  • The Graphite Design Tour AD IZ offers one of the widest ranges available in the premium shaft space making it ideal for almost every swing speed.
  • The AD IZ uses aerospace grade materials and a unique angular blend to create an exceptional feel and maximum performance.
  • The mid-kickpoint is a versatile golf shaft design that will fit tailor nicely to golfers of many different skill sets.
  • The Tour AD IZ is only available to demo in select retail stores or at manufacturer demo days.
  • The cost of the AD IZ shafts may too high for budget-conscious golfers to justify with their new club.
  • The player looking for an ultra-low spin shaft may not get the maximum amount of spin reduction with the mid-kickpoint of the Tour AD IZ.

Graphite Design takes advantage of a material weave pattern that has allowed them to create a first-of-its-kind shaft that truly caters to golfers of all swing speeds and skill levels. The first premium Graphite Design shaft offered in a weight range of under 45 grams, the Tour AD IZ is an engineering marvel. If you are a serious golfer, no matter your swing speed , and you want to get the absolute most from your driver, fairway woods, or hybrids, you need to be considering the Tour AD IZ for your game. I personally would recommend this to players, especially lower swing speed players who generally cannot find advanced quality shaft offerings in the weights and flexes that suit their games the most. If you can get your hands on the Tour AD IZ, you won’t want to let go. Reach out to your local Golf Club Fitting professional and ask about how to get your Driver or Fairway metal wood “Into the Zone” using the new Tour AD IZ model of premium Graphite Design graphite golf shafts.

The Graphite Design Tour AD IZ shaft has a distinct feel and is designed to have higher launch and reduced spin.

A no-nonsense organization, Graphite Design is. Every year, they introduce one or two new shafts with little fanfare (we reviewed the excellent Tour AD TP earlier this year). If you want a big social media campaign, there are others that can provide it to you. Check out GD if you just want good performance.

Obviously you’re not a golfer

Both are wonderful, but they do differ somewhat. The IZ is more solid and one-piece in the same flex. It’s clear that the DI has a stronger punch to it.

The AD IZ Tour enhances the Graphite Design range with a distinctive style that still maintains a high level of consistency. If you want to get your drives into “the Zone” of high launch and low spin, the AD IZ is definitely worth considering.

Ok?, my take.

If you are smooth the DI is what you want. If you are violent, the IZ is what you want.

However, the doesn’t always hold true. I am violent. I prefer the DI as I can feel it load and know when to release it.

So I guess it comes down to feeling the shaft load and using it versus stable. If you want to feel it load, go DI. If you wanna swing as hard as possible and have the clubhead be where it should be, go IZ.

Looks like DI will be for me.

Thanks for your input.

BTW, I use TP for driver and DI for 3 and 5 wood.

So IZ will be more like TP? More one piece feel?

I guess DI hybrid will be exactly like the fairway DI?

Theyll load more? That’s all I know for sure.

Than the IZ. I don’t know what the TP is. I assume I do but I really don’t know for sure.

I use the TP in 3 wood and had been using it in driver. I have an IZ 85x in 18* Apex hybrid that I really like. The DI will have much more kick feeling loading and unloading, while the IZ still has some life to it the kick will be less pronounced. IZ spins less for me, and is extremely accurate (which is what I am looking for in that part of bag). IZ hybrid shaft will work for smooth or aggressive swings in my opinion, where the DI hybrid will be much better suited for smooth swings.

  1. GD Tour AD HD vs IZ

For me the biggest thing with driver is dispersion. I found no difference between the HD and the Ventus shafts in dispersion, but the HD just felt better. I had the most success with the Red in the Ventus shafts. Unfortunately I haven't tried the IZ, but these are my two cents on the HD! Driver Taylormade Qi10.
