Longlegs Trailer: The FBI Searches For Nicolas Cage's Deeply Disturbed Killer In New Horror Movie

Donnie yen’s new john wick spinoff puts even more pressure on ballerina, top gun 3’s breakout star creates a challenge for the franchise's future.

One of the things that made Tom Cruise such a bankable star is his versatility. He’s appeared in all kinds of movies across various genres. He’s given hilarious turns in comedies like Risky Business and Tropic Thunder , as well as engaging dramatic performances in classics like Rain Man and Born on the Fourth of July .

But arguably the genre that Cruise is most commonly associated with is action. From the aerial acrobatics of Top Gun to the increasingly daring stunts of the Mission: Impossible franchise, Cruise has starred in some awesome action movies over the years.

Updated on May 23rd, 2022 by Mark Birrell:   As per Variety ,  Tom Cruise recently stated at the Cannes Film Festival that he never intends to release his movies straight to streaming, meaning that  Top Gun: Maverick won't be available to stream for some time yet. However, there are plenty of the actor's other great action movies available right now.

Top Gun (1986)

Available to stream on netflix and paramount+.

Maverick’s debut in the first  Top Gun  movie solidified Tom Cruise’s place on the Hollywood A-list and his return to the role after over 35 years has shown that he's still at the top of it.

RELATED: 15 Best Movies Like Top Gun

While its jingoistic message has gained the movie a reputation as thinly veiled propaganda,  Top Gun  is an action movie classic anchored by palpable bromance and dazzling aerial set-pieces courtesy of legendary director Tony Scott.

Mission: Impossible III (2006)

Available to stream on showtime.

A decade after the original movie wowed audiences, Cruise brought on the then-freshman film director–and now renowned reboot maestro–J.J. Abrams to helm the  Mission: Impossible franchise's third installment. Abrams then stayed on as a producer for the following sequels, with this entry sowing the seeds of what the   movies are today.

Though it may not contain a death-defying centerpiece like later  Mission: Impossible  sequels, the action never stops flowing in this threequel and Philip Seymour Hoffman's Owen Davian is one of the best villains in the  Mission: Impossible  franchise .

Oblivion (2013)

Available to stream on hbo max.

A stylish sci-fi action thriller in the vein of classics like  Logan's Run ,  Oblivion   was the first collaboration between Tom Cruise and director Joseph Kosinski, with whom Cruise would reunite for  Top Gun: Maverick .

Top Gun  fans will find plenty of aerial action in the movie, but it's really the slick and detailed designs of the post-apocalyptic world that Cruise's character inhabits that are the main selling point.

War of the Worlds (2005)

Though a far cry from an alien invasion blockbuster like Independence Day , Steven Spielberg's adaptation of H.G. Wells' seminal sci-fi story is bursting with huge action spectacle.

Despite his character not being an action hero by any means, Cruise plays perfectly into his star persona as a struggling divorced dad trying to protect his kids in the midst of a global attack by a technologically superior species. Cruise's character may be more of a spectator to the action rather than a participant in it but the grounded perspective makes scenes like the tripod's first appearance simply unforgettable.

The Last Samurai (2003)

Available to stream on netflix.

This period epic, whilst not without its romanticized depictions of its subject matter, is a highly-regarded entry in Tom Cruise's list of action movies. Set in Japan in the late 19th century, the film follows Cruise's haunted and bitter former soldier as he's placed in the middle of a samurai rebellion.

RELATED:  Tom Cruise's 10 Best Movies, According To Ranker

The Last Samurai was nominated for 4 Oscars, including Best Supporting Actor for Cruise's main co-star, Ken Watanabe. However, the whole cast gives noteworthy performances, with Cruise fully leaning into a violent samurai movie aesthetic.

Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015)

Available to stream on fubotv and paramount+.

The fifth  Mission: Impossible  movie introduced a SPECTRE-like organization to rival the heroes' superheroic skills and a Blofeld-like mastermind to become the movie-series' first recurring villain, with writer and director Christopher McQuarrie going on to become the franchise's first recurring director also.

As  Rogue Nation   delivers its signature death-defying stunt in the opening scene, which features Cruise attached to the side of a real jet plane as it takes off, the movie is mostly a slightly more grounded affair than the other sequels in the franchise but nevertheless has nailbiting tension throughout and one of the best car chases of the 2010s .

Jack Reacher (2012)

Available to stream on amazon prime video and paramount+.

Before Christopher McQuarrie took over the Mission: Impossible franchise, he directed Cruise as the title character in Jack Reacher . Based on One Shot , the ninth book in Lee Child’s Reacher series, Jack Reacher follows its eponymous vigilante’s investigation into a former military sniper who shot a seemingly random group of people in broad daylight.

Even the negative reviews of Jack Reacher noted that Cruise gives an affable turn and that the action sequences, like the car chase, are wildly entertaining.

Knight And Day (2010)

Available to stream on amc+ and fubotv.

A blend of action thriller and romantic comedy, Knight and Day stars Cruise as a secret agent on a deadly mission and Cameron Diaz as a tourist who gets unwittingly swept up in his adventures.

The MacGuffin-driven plot can get a little confusing, but the movie is elevated by thrilling large-scale action scenes and spectacular chemistry between Cruise and Diaz.

Mission: Impossible (1996)

Available to stream on pluto tv and paramount+.

The sequels to Mission: Impossible have become all-out action extravaganzas. Like the Fast & Furious series, it’s an exercise in one-upmanship as each movie sets out to top the spectacle of the last. But the original 1996 film directed by Brian De Palma was a slick and semi-grounded spy thriller.

More in line with the tone of the original TV series, the first Mission: Impossible movie revolves around meticulously planned espionage operations. Ethan Hunt dangling from the ceiling of a high-security vault is one of the most iconic movie moments of all time.

American Made (2017)

Available to stream on fubotv.

It’s rare that a biopic falls into the category of action, but Doug Liman’s American Made has shootouts, police raids, and crash landings. It tells the outrageous life story of Barry Seal, a pilot who simultaneously worked for the CIA and Pablo Escobar.

Cruise gives a charming and hysterically funny turn as Seal, while Liman conceived, shot, and edited the movie in the fast-paced, rapid-cutting, style of Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas .

Edge Of Tomorrow (2014)

Available to rent on amazon prime video.

Much like the slasher movie  Happy Death Day , Doug Liman's earlier collaboration with Tom Cruise,  Edge of Tomorrow , incorporates another genre into the Groundhog Day “time loop” concept. Set in a future in which humanity is at war with alien invaders, Edge of Tomorrow sees Cruise’s soldier living the same day over and over again.

Based on Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s All You Need is Kill , Edge of Tomorrow is one of the most acclaimed sci-fi action thrillers of recent years though fans are still waiting for the sequel.

Collateral (2004)

Available to stream on hbo max.

Directed by Michael Mann, Collateral is a riveting LA-set noir film and a fascinating two-hander about the relationship between two diametrically opposed characters. Jamie Foxx plays an everyman taxi driver and Cruise plays a ruthless hitman who hires him to transport him to jobs across the city on one fateful night.

As usual, Mann brings sleek cinematic style to the proceedings and the tangible on-screen chemistry shared by Foxx and Cruise keeps their characters’ dynamic compelling.

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011)

Though the first three Mission: Impossible  films were successful, Brad Bird's  Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol  was somewhat of a revamp for the franchise. This time, IMF operative Ethan Hunt is forced to go off the grid in his pursuit of a nuclear extremist.

RELATED:  Tom Cruise's 10 Most Iconic Movie Quotes

The movie’s central set-piece, in which Hunt hangs off the facade of the Burj Khalifa, became one of the all-time great IMAX movie moments, still packing a punch on the smallest of screens. It's filled with breathtaking action sequences, like a foot chase through a sandstorm and a heist in the Kremlin.

Minority Report (2002)

Available to rent on apple tv.

Steven Spielberg’s Minority Report is both a high-stakes crime thriller and a thought-provoking sci-fi epic. Set in a dystopian future in which the police can predict crimes before they take place, Tom Cruise’s top cop is accused of a murder he has yet to commit.

With its ambiguous morals and futuristic portrayal of law enforcement, Minority Report is a quintessential sci-fi noir in the same fascinating category as fellow Philip K. Dick adaptation Blade Runner .

Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018)

Available to stream on paramount+.

Acclaimed as one of the greatest action movies ever made by critics, Mission: Impossible – Fallout is by far the most thrilling, action-packed entry in the franchise so far.

Cruise stepped it up by doing death-defying stunts in practically every scene of Fallout . He dangled from a helicopter, jumped out of a plane, and rode a motorcycle the wrong way around the Arc de Triomphe. The movie's commitment to largely-in-camera spectacle puts it in a class above most big-budget Hollywood action movies of the past decade.

7 best Tom Cruise movies to stream on Netflix, Prime Video and more

Where to stream these iconic movies starring Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick

Tom Cruise is one of the highest-paid actors in Hollywood. For good reason, too. With jaw-dropping stunts, a gleaming smile and an intense gaze unmatched by many, Tom Cruise is a household name in Hollywood. He's had the lead actor role in at least 39 films and counting and has a box office total that has grossed over 10 billion. He has also produced some of his own films, including the hit Mission: Impossible franchise.

While Cruise may be known as an invincible action star, he has also played numerous characters with incredible depth and range. He has been the charming yet competitive romantic lead, the cold, calculating killer, and the greedy but misguided younger brother . Cruise has worked alongside some of the most famous actors and directors of our time. While it's hard to narrow down his greatest roles in such a short list, we've put together a few of the best Tom Cruise movies.

Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise in Rain Man

In the Oscar award-winning film, Rain Main, Cruise plays Charlie Babbitt, the selfish brother of Raymond as played by Dustin Hoffman. Charlie finds out that his brother Raymond has inherited a great deal of money. Determined to get hold of what he believes is rightfully his, Charlie absconds Ray away from his residential home, sending the two on a memorable road trip neither will forget.

Hoffman took home an Academy Award for his role. So did the director, the screenwriter, and the picture as a whole. While Tom Cruise may not have received an Oscar nomination for his role in the film, he is the perfect actor to play alongside Hoffman. You have the reward of watching him shed his character's shallow, flashy demeanor and embrace a subtle maturity as he learns why his brother was sent away. A must-watch film that is one of Tom Cruise's best.

Watch on Prime Video

Tom Cruise in The Firm

No one but Cruise could have played the part of Mitch McDeere in The Firm, an adaptation of the book by John Grisham. It could be why the 2012 television series of the book was canceled after only a single season. In the film, Cruise's McDeere is hired by a "small" firm from Memphis right out of law school. Although everything seems on the up-and-up, it isn't long before he realizes that he is surrounded by crooks.

It's the transformation of McDeere's smugness over landing such a top-notch job into an intensity over uncovering the truth and protecting his career — and life — that makes this such a powerful Tom Cruise film. However, what may surprise many is that Holly Hunter took home the Oscar for her role as Tammy Hemphill, the secretary of the private detective that McDeere hires. Despite Cruise's lack of Oscar recognition, this is one of his best movies.

A Few Good Men

Tom Cruise in A Few Good Men

A Few Good Men is a movie best known by many for its famous line spoken by Jack Nicholson who retorts, "You can't handle the truth!" However, it wouldn't be the same without Cruise playing the cocky Military lawyer Lieutenant Daniel Kaffee.

When defense lawyer Kaffee gets to defend two Marines accused of killing one of their colleagues, many expect him to simply settle the case out of court. Cruise's natural overconfidence as portrayed in his character, Kaffee, becomes a quality that people plan to manipulate to keep the truth a secret. When he realizes this raw reality, Cruise's stone-cold determination to take the case to court shocks many. Nicholson, who plays Colonel Nathan R. Jessup, was nominated for the Oscar. However, Cruise wows the audience when he plays opposite Nicholson in the famous court scene that prompted the line we all know so well.

Tom Cruise in Collateral

Going against his typical role, Tom Cruise plays a ruthless killer in the movie, Collateral. Vincent, as played by Cruise, is visiting Los Angeles to finish off a few people who are supposed to testify in court against a drug lord as well as a couple of other lawyers involved in the case. When he gets into the cab of Max, played by Jamie Foxx, not everything goes according to plan.

Cruise takes out all the charm in his personality to depict a heartless killer — although what remains is a certain reasonableness to his personality as he almost convinces Foxx's Max to stick with him for the long haul. However, Foxx's Max becomes braver by the moment. In yet another film where another actor was Oscar-nominated over Cruise — this time it was Jamie Foxx — it still remains one of Cruise's most complex characters, making it one of his best movies.

Watch on Paramount Plus

Jerry Maguire

Tom Cruise in Jerry Maguire

This time an Oscar nominee, Cruise plays the part of Jerry Maguire, a sports agent at the top of his game. However, Cruise's Maguire gets a crisis of conscience when one of his clients gets seriously hurt. Confronted by the client's son, Cruise realizes he has no heart for those he is supposed to represent.

When Cruise's Maguire writes a mission statement, encouraging his agency to change their ways, he loses it all. However, despite the falling out, he connects with potential love interest, Dorothy Boyd, played by Renee Zellweger. He also manages to keep a single client, Rod Tidwell, played by Cuba Gooding Jr. It's a perfect blend of excellent acting, a strong script, and superb directing that makes this one of the most memorable romantic comedies. It also happens to include the famous Tom Cruise line that gives us all the feels, "You complete me."

Rent/buy on Amazon or Apple

Top Gun: Maverick

Tom Cruise as Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell in Top Gun: Maverick

Timing is everything, as the old adage says. That is possibly why the movie Top Gun: Maverick was such a success. Cruise starred in and produced the film, a sequel to his career-making film, Top Gun. While it was ready to go in 2020, he delayed its release for when people could actually see it in theaters. And for good reason. With incredible stunts and minimal usage of CGI, the movie is an experience as much as it is entertainment.

Playing a character many became familiar with in the '80s, Cruise adds a level of maturity to his role as Captain Pete "Maverick" Mitchell. Cruise's Maverick returns to the school that molded him to train younger pilots, one of whom is the son of his now-deceased best friend. The emotional depth Cruise brings to the film makes it almost better than the original, a feat that's near impossible for sequels.

Risky Business

Tom Cruise in Risky Business

How can any of us forget that famous scene when Cruise dances in his underwear to the Bob Seger song, "Old Time Rock & Roll"? One of the movies that made him who he is today, Cruise plays Joel Goodsen, a college-bound high school senior who itches to cut loose from his parents' ties. Finally having the opportunity to live a little when his parents go on vacation, things for Goodsen go from bad to worse as each rule is broken.

Acting alongside Rebecca De Mornay who plays the elusive and appealing call girl, Cruise's Goodsen learns about life, love, and consequences in this iconic film. Coupled with a strong script and excellent music from the 80s, this is one of Tom Cruise's best and most memorable movies.

War of the Worlds

tom cruise movies watch online free

  • Rolling Stone Peter Travers H.G. Wells wouldn't recognize his 1898 alien-invasion novel, The War of the Worlds, in Steven Spielberg's updated film version. But Wells could probably relate to the ensuing fear and panic.
  • St. Louis Post-Dispatch Joe Williams It's a thrilling ride...[but] this bountiful pot of signifiers leaves a caustic aftertaste.
  • Austin Chronicle Marc Savlov War of the Worlds is pure popcorn escapism of the highest order if you want it to be, or more, but it's never less than thrilling.
  • Zap2it.com Dan Fienberg An intense sci fi experience that should satisfy viewers who crave both expensive special effects and intimate human drama, assuming that such an audience exists.
  • Lessons of Darkness Nick Schager A summer spectacular in which human relationships and emotions refuse to be overwhelmed by (admittedly awesome) computer-generated mayhem.
  • Beliefnet Nell Minow The story is affecting, the action scenes are thrilling, the issues are resonant.
  • MovieFreak.com Sara Michelle Fetters As it is, I admire the brilliance of the majority of this picture to no-end; it's just that pesky literal ending I walked out wanting to declare war on.
  • Chicago Reader Jonathan Rosenbaum Spielberg's calculations turn out to be more prominent than any effects they could possibly produce, and the less pretentious 1953 version by producer George Pal emerges as more likable.
  • New York Magazine/Vulture Ken Tucker Steven Spielberg's War of the Worlds is huge and scary, moving and funny-another capper to a career that seems like an unending succession of captivations.
  • AV Club Scott Tobias There likely won't be a more gripping film this year than Spielberg's War Of The Worlds, which at its best glides along like choreography with a camera, slowly parsing out information while shrouding the rest in shadow and suggestion.
  • Observer Andrew Sarris Overall, the film is too lacking in feeling to provide a recognizably human experience.
  • Washington Post Michael O'Sullivan War of the Worlds is taut, gripping and surprisingly dark filmmaking.
  • Observer Rex Reed There's stuff to make you go 'Wow!' but nothing you'll remember the next day.
  • New Yorker David Denby It's as if the aliens landed and everyone died so that Tom Cruise could grow up one more time.
  • Ebert & Roeper Richard Roeper [B]y far the biggest, loudest and most elaborate adaptation of the H.G. Wells classic.
  • Entertainment Weekly Owen Gleiberman War of the Worlds is an attack-of-the-aliens disaster film crafted with sinister technological grandeur -- a true popcorn apocalypse.
  • Decent Films Steven D. Greydanus Rather grim, joyless excitement… 9/11 imagery gives the film some topical cache, but there's no commentary or catharsis here.
  • ReelViews James Berardinelli War of the Worlds may not stand up well to careful inspection and it may not be the smartest science fiction film brought to the screen, but it is an intense, visceral experience.
  • Salon.com Stephanie Zacharek Extravagant in movie terms but stingy in emotional ones, it embodies all of Spielberg's bad impulses and almost none of his good ones.
  • San Jose Mercury News Bruce Newman War of the Worlds' is a picture without a thought in its pretty head: the Tom Cruise movie to end all Tom Cruise movies.

  • Trivia The zero gravity scene took sixty-four takes and was shot for two days in a special plane that was lined in padded green fabric covered in reference marks The plane would fly to a high altitude then dive along a parabolic path, falling at the same rate as the gravitational pull. This has been used for several films in the past, including Apollo 13 (1995) 22 years earlier. It was invented by NASA, where it was used for zero-G training for astronauts. Reportedly, a lot of the crew got nauseous during the scene and vomited, except for the main stars, Tom Cruise and Annabelle Wallis , who were really proud of the stunt.

Tom Cruise’s 10 Best Non-'Mission: Impossible' Movies, According to Rotten Tomatoes

If you want to see more of the actor behind Ethan Hunt, check out these highly-rated movies!

From his earliest days starring in comedic teen dramas to his current standing as a major blockbuster draw card the world over, Tom Cruise can only be viewed as one of the greatest movie stars cinema has ever seen. Ever since he starred in 1996’s reboot of Mission: Impossible , the action franchise has become a major part of his cinematic identity, and with Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One in theaters from July 12, fans will be coming out in droves to see what Ethan Hunt and the IMF have in store.

Despite his action star image, Cruise has honed his skill set in a wide range of roles across many different genres. From unlikely heroes to terrifying antagonists and, of course, a couple of iconic action roles, these are Tom Cruise’s best movies outside the Mission: Impossible franchise, according to Rotten Tomatoes .

10 'Jerry Maguire' (1996)

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 84%

A sports management romance flick, Jerry Maguire excelled thanks to its wonderful cast and Cameron Crowe ’s unique style. It stars Cruise as the titular character, a successful sports agent who want to re-invent the way athlete management operates for the better, with only one client staying with him to see if it will work.

Ever on the brink of everything falling apart, Cruise brings out Jerry Maguire’s angst and desperation but also his convictions and humor to make for a charming and triumphant outing. With Renée Zellweger and Cuba Gooding Jr. also outstanding in their parts, the film remains a rewarding, endlessly quotable '90s rom-com classic.

9 'American Made' (2017)

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 85%

A comedic crime drama based on true events, American Made had raucous and infectious energy befitting its stranger-than-fiction narrative. Cruise stars as Barry Seal, an American pilot hired by the CIA to gain intel on a communist threat in Central America only to end up working as a smuggler for the Medellín cartel.

A fun-fueled pressure cooker of a movie , it demanded Cruise shoulder the load of its tonal complexity. He delivered in spades, embodying the reckless, shameless moral debauchery that made the film such a spectacle. It encapsulates the freewheeling chaos of 1980s America and roars to an abrupt and violent ending.

8 'Born of the Fourth of July' (1989)

Possibly the single most underrated performance of Tom Cruise’s career, Born on the Fourth of July features the movie icon at his dramatic best. The biographical war drama follows Ron Kovic, a paralyzed veteran of the Vietnam War who becomes an anti-war activist as the world around him fails to comprehend what he lives with.

From director Oliver Stone , the film was an angry, exceptional swipe at so many aspects of American society and how it handled the war and its veterans in its entirety. Taking Kovic from an optimistic and naïve youth to a furious, jaded activist earned Cruise his first Oscar nomination and remains his most striking performance.

7 'Collateral' (2004)

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 86%

Tom Cruise has made a name for himself as one of the greatest action stars cinema has ever seen. As such, it is rather rare to see him in the role of the antagonist, which is a shame considering how fantastic he was at playing the villain in Collateral .

The thriller stars Jamie Foxx as an L.A. cabbie who realizes he’s been driving a rampaging hitman from one job to the next. The action is high-tempo and intense, and the tension only builds as Foxx’s innocent protagonist tries to figure out how to escape the night alive, but the film hinges its brilliance on Cruise’s magnetic and utterly intimidating performance as the psychotic gunman.

6 'The Color of Money' (1986)

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 88%

A legacy sequel before legacy sequels were a thing, The Color of Money succeeded The Hustler some 25 years after the first film was made. Paul Newman reprised his role as “Fast Eddie” Felson, a once legendary pub-crawling con artist who returns to scamming pool games and takes young accomplice Vincent Lauria (Cruise) under his wing.

The mentor-to-rivalry relationship between the two is a joy to watch, especially with legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese giving the film a real visual punch. While Newman was the leading man, the film showed that Cruise wasn’t out of his depth rubbing shoulders with major stars on the big screen and still stands as a pivotal moment in his career.

5 'Rain Man' (1988)

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 89%

From director Barry Levinson , Rain Man was an early opportunity for Cruise to capitalize on his early success in a dramatic road trip film which would win four Oscars, including Best Picture. It follows a sketchy car dealer who, upon learning his estranged father has died, returns home and learns his inheritance has been left to a mental institution that houses an autistic older brother he never knew he had.

Wanting to get his hands on the inheritance, Charlie (Cruise) checks his brother out of the facility, leading to a chaotic, comedic, and heartfelt road trip across America. With good humor, great character development, and a wonderful sense of adventure, Rain Man has become a deserving classic and one of the most memorable films of Cruise’s career.

4 'Minority Report' (2002)

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 90%

2002’s Minority Report presented moviegoers with a mouth-watering collaboration between Tom Cruise and veteran filmmaker Steven Spielberg . As a thought-provoking sci-fi thriller, it did not disappoint, taking place in a future where police can arrest murderers before they strike. The movie follows a Precrime officer accused of murdering a man he is yet to meet.

As a high-concept action blockbuster, the movie is quite remarkable in giving audiences high-octane thrills while still delivering a contemplative story about right and wrong in law enforcement. It also gave Cruise plenty of room to showcase his acting chops, with intense scenes involving the mystery of his missing son and the prospect of vengeance against the man who took him from him.

3 'Edge of Tomorrow' (2014)

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 91%

It seems as though every genre has given its own spin on the time loop narrative, from romantic comedies like Palm Springs and Groundhog Day to horror flicks like Happy Death Day . However, few are as good as Edge of Tomorrow , an action sci-fi thriller following an alien invasion of Earth and a soldier who becomes humanity’s last hope when he falls into a time loop.

While the film has astonishing action sequences and visual effects, the most enjoyable aspect of it is seeing Cruise portray Major William Cage, an officer who has never seen combat and desperately tries to wriggle out of battle any way he can. The role brought Cruise’s underrated comedy chops to the fore and gave audiences a noble character arc that was fun and engaging.

2 'Risky Business' (1983)

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 92%

An early star-making flick for Cruise, Risky Business unveiled Tom Cruise as a leading man with strong comedic presence. It follows an upper-class high schooler from Chicago suburbia whose night of wild fun leads to a desperate, farcical adventure as he must rack up money fast, leading him to use his parents’ house as a brothel.

The flick is quintessentially '80s, but it does work exceptionally well, thanks to its focus on teenage angst and its willingness to incorporate darker themes. It also features a famous scene showing a baby-faced Tom Cruise relishing his newfound freedom by lip-syncing, air-guitaring, and dancing to Bob Seger ’s "Old Time Rock ‘n’ Roll."

1 'Top Gun: Maverick' (2022)

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 96%

A rousing, triumphant, glorious throwback to '80s action, Top Gun: Maverick could well go down as Tom Cruise’s crowning achievement. The legacy sequel follows an aging fighter pilot brought back to Top Gun to train a cohort of pilots ahead of a dangerous mission.

In addition to its romantic nostalgia, the film boasted a truly staggering visual display, making it an incredible big-screen experience appreciated by fans and critics alike. It won an Academy Award for Best Sound and currently sits as the second-highest-rated Tom Cruise film on Rotten Tomatoes, just behind Mission: Impossible – Fallout .
