Fresh from a stroll up the Spanish Steps in the heart of the city (a car chase in the film takes place on the famous stone staircase and in the Piazza di Spagne), Cruise and McQuarrie took the stage in the Auditorium della Conciliazione and in opening comments thanked “the people of Rome” and the local governments in Rome and Venice.

Cruise, who was indefatigable today in taking time with everyone on the red carpet (so much so the movie screening started later than planned because it was such a big day), recalled what it took to pull off the film.

“Everyone knows when we shot this film here, and what was going on in the world,” he said onstage. And had it not been for every person in the entire community, to work with us — all the way from the restaurants in the streets, the police everyone on the road to government and medical staff — to make sure that we’re all safe and to create what we’re going to create this evening,” he said. “I just want you to know every day we were on the phone and working together to keep everything going to bring work to people, to raise the bar to people. And I want to say that the people came to visit daily to say hello to us and encourage us — it was a very beautiful time.”

Tom Cruise Spotted in Rome for Filming of 'Mission: Impossible 7' [Video]

Tom Cruise waving from car while filming Mission Impossible 7 in Rome

Superstar Tom Cruise is in Rome for the filming of “Mission: Impossible 7,” the seventh installment of the famous action spy series, where Cruise plays the role of Ethan Hunt, an agent of the Impossible Missions Force.

Cruise and co-star Hayley Atwell were spotted filming on the famous Via dei Fori Imperiali, the long boulevard that cuts across the Imperial Fora area, the monumental public squares of ancient Rome, between Piazza Venezia and the Colosseum.

“The scene revolved around a car chase with a black BMW M5 and several Italian ‘ polizia ’ (police) cars, in addition to a motorcycle and a special forces police truck,” reports Euronews.

Cruise waved at cameras and was smiling.

According to ANSA, shooting will take place in different parts of Rome's historic center, including the area around Castel Sant’Angelo and Rione Monti.

“This is a very big economic and organizational commitment, while adopting scrupulous measures to prevent the spread of the virus, with daily tests for the entire crew and cast, and the disinfection of sets and equipment,” said Rome city council, who also stressed how “major international productions are continuing to choose Rome,” with 596 requests to the cinema office between June and August, up from 583 in the same period last year.

“Mission: Impossible 7,” directed by Christopher McQuarrie, is scheduled to be released in November 2021 by Paramount Pictures.

"It’s my passion to entertain you," the actor said during a speech from Rome's Spanish Steps at the "Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One" premiere

Tom Cruise counts his job as "a privilege that I have never taken for granted."

On the red carpet in Rome for the world premiere of Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One Monday, Cruise, 60, praised how people of different cultures "all join together to enjoy cinema" as he gave a speech from the city's famous Spanish Steps, according to Variety .

“It’s something that I grew up with, that made me and inspired me to dream and want to travel the world," Cruise said of his passion for films. “My goal since I was little was to make movies and travel. And not just be a tourist, but work in that world and understand their culture."

"Through my movies, I’ve been able to have that because everyone here has allowed me to entertain them. It’s a privilege that I have never taken for granted," he continued in his speech, emphasizing the importance of seeing movies in theaters : "It’s my passion to entertain you, and I will always fight for big theaters and that kind of experience for everyone.”

Cruise appeared on the red carpet with his Mission: Impossible director and frequent collaborator Christopher McQuarrie on Monday, as well as members of the cast including Esai Morales, Simon Pegg, Frederick Schmidt, Shea Whigham, Mariela Garriga, Rebecca Ferguson, Hayley Atwell, Pom Klementieff and Vanessa Kirby.

The actor praised his work with McQuarrie, who directed the previous two  Mission: Impossible  films and also wrote Top Gun: Maverick , during his speech, saying the director has "had a hand in every single film I’ve made over the past 16 years."

Cruise said, "He is my creative brother and an exceptional human being."

McQuarrie's collaborations with Cruise date back to at least 2008, when he wrote the screenplay for Valkyrie , which Cruised starred in for director Bryan Singer.

Though he only wrote that movie, he first worked with Cruise as a director on 2012's Jack Reacher , which then led to his installment as the Mission: Impossible franchise's director beginning with 2015's Rogue Nation .

The series' latest entry is its first since 2018. Dead Reckoning Part One finds Cruise's Ethan Hunt as he and his team are tasked with tracking down "a terrifying new weapon that threatens all of humanity before it falls into the wrong hands," according to an official synopsis.

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One  is in theaters July 12.

Tom Cruise, director Christopher McQuarrie and the cast of 'Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One' at the film's world premiere in Rome

The lucky few managed to snag a Mission Impossible 7 -branded umbrella. There were dozens of them, neatly arranged on the marble banisters of the Spanish Steps, the majestic staircase of Rome’s Piazza di Spagna that is no stranger to large-scale social events, but rarely finds itself the center of a global premiere like this: The bow of Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning, Part One .

Netflix rejected david cronenberg's 'the shrouds' as a series, director says: "i felt i can't let this die", 'the apprentice' director shrugs off trump lawsuit threat: "everybody talks about him suing a lot of people, they don't talk about his success rate".

The undisputed star on this very hot Roman afternoon is Tom Cruise . That quintessential action actor, who, while almost 61, continues to astound the world with increasingly reckless stunts and seemingly inexhaustible energy. Cruise even managed, on his Roman tour de force, to find time to stop in on Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who, rather lamely, said “Mission: Impossible” is what her government faces every day.

But back to the Spanish Steps, to the sweltering crowd of red carpet gawkers, to the rowdy screams and cauldron of sweat and excitement that rises above those huge LED screens and can be heard over the “Top Secret” drum corps in M:I 7 uniforms performing on the steps, lending the air of a military tattoo to the event.

After descending the staircase, Cruise strolls around the red carpet semicircle running around the famed Barcaccia fountain: 36 slots representing the whole world united here for the world premiere of one of the last great blockbuster franchises still standing.

The M:I 7 red carpet, much like the Roman Coliseum, has a strict pecking order. High up, next to the Trinità dei Monti church, there’s a dedicated area for the select few: Those granted extensive face-time with Cruise, who signs every single autograph, shakes every hand, poses for every selfie. Below is an almost-uncontrolled rabble of second-tier fans, shoving and scuffling for their moment with the star.

Addressing his fans directly, Cruise recalls the struggles the team had in making M:I 7, which shot at the peak of COVID lockdowns. “You have to see the film, we ran through these streets at a difficult time for everyone [the pandemic and lockdown]. I feel lucky to be here, and if there hadn’t been a team of people who made it possible, we wouldn’t have been able to create a story like this. The film is an epic adventure, full of real action, we really ‘rocked’ in that car.”

He points to the yellow Fiat 500 featured in one of the film’s most exciting and exquisitely Roman scenes, parked a few meters away. A car is described as “a challenge” even for someone like Cruise, accustomed to doing his own stunts on jets, helicopters, motorcycles and race cars. “Driving on the cobblestones of Rome, that was something! Hayley [Atwell] was very brave to be in that car with me, I kept reassuring her ‘Don’t worry, I’ll take care of you,’ but it wasn’t easy.”

Adds director Christopher McQuarrie , “It’s great to be back here in Rome. It fills me with joy to have been here when it was empty during the pandemic and to see the streets today so full of people and life. I’ve never felt more happy to be stuck in traffic!”

Tom Cruise Mission Impossible 7 World Premiere

Tom Cruise made an impassioned speech about cinemagoing from Rome’s Spanish Steps at the world premiere of “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One.”

“There is a community that we are all part of — different cultures and ways of life, we all join together to enjoy cinema,” said Cruise, dressed in a crisp blue suit and wearing aviator shades. “It’s something that I grew up with, that made me and inspired me to dream and want to travel the world.

Popular on Variety

“He’s had a hand in every single film I’ve made over the past 16 years,” Cruise declared. “Uncredited, he wrote ‘Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.” He’s had a hand in editing and writing every single I’ve ever done. He is my creative brother and an exceptional human being.”

Cruise, who reprises his role as Ethan Hunt in Paramount’s latest tentpole, added: “I want to thank Rome and the city. And also we got to film in Venice, which was extraordinary, during some very difficult times in this country. I dreamed to be coming here and [sharing] it with all of you.”

The seventh installment of the “Mission: Impossible” franchise was partly filmed in the Italian capital, where the cobblestoned streets provided the perfect pavement for drifting cars burning rubber in numerous hair-raising chases that are likely to go down in action film history. The Spanish Steps, by the Piazza di Spagna, is the setting of a wild car chase involving a massive Hummer chasing a tiny vintage yellow Fiat 500 driven by Cruise and Hayley Atwell, who are handcuffed.

Cruise came to Italy with director McQuarrie and an ensemble cast of returning talents including Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson and Vanessa Kirby on the red carpet. Franchise newcomers Hayley Atwell, Pom Klementieff, Shea Whigham and Greg Tarzan Davis were also among those who made the trek to the Eternal City for the launch.

Atwell, who plays thief and agent of chaos Grace, told Variety during a weekend junket that she trained for months on a race track with stunt coordinator Wade Eastwood for her Rome chase. Only after her hardcore training did she arrive in Rome to work alongside Cruise, who was determined to keep the stunts as real as possible.

“I was handcuffed to Tom Cruise, who is in the passenger seat,” Atwell recalled. “Both Wade and Tom said: ‘We want you to go in front of this monument, do some 360 doughnuts, drift in, drift out, dodge cars and keep going.'”

During this feat, Atwell was told that “Tom’s going to be suggesting lines to you [while] he’s going to be acting as Ethan. But he also might give you moments of direction, too. Like: ‘turn left’ or ‘slow down,’” she said.

So Atwell’s challenge, as she was drifting, was to work out: “Is Tom as a producer telling me as Hayley to slow down because something is unsafe? Or is he as Ethan telling Grace to slow down?”

“It was an amazing day,” Atwell noted. After it was over, McQuarrie took her out to lunch and said: ‘Tom put his life in your hands today. That was no small thing,’” she added.

By contrast, Pom Klementieff – who plays the psychopathic villain Paris – didn’t train at all for scenes in which she drives the Hummer in pursuit of the yellow Fiat as it comes darting down the ancient staircase filled with screaming people who are jumping and running.

For Klementieff, the hard part was “not having too much fun doing it,” she said during the junket. “I was trying not to laugh the whole time, because for me it was so funny to be chasing a Fiat [500] … in this crazy Hummer.”

“ I had to tone it down a bit. I had to remember that I’m a villain,” she laughed. But Klementieff also noted “that some of that [irony] is in the movie, of course!”

Paramount’s July 12 U.S. release of “Mission: Impossible 7” – which also shot in England, Abu Dhabi and Norway – was pushed back several times from its original planned 2021 launch date due to pandemic-related setbacks.

In February 2021, the movie was forced to halt production in Italy, days before its planned shoot in Venice, as the country contended with one of the highest COVID death rates in Europe.

“In every city we were in across the world, it was the middle of COVID,” she added. “So it was amazing that they got the system [COVID production protocol] in place — and Tom drove it.”

Apart from Venice, these are all Mission Impossible locations that Ethan Hunt has already visited in the past.

Mission Impossible 7 in a nutshell

Mission Impossible 7 ( M:I VII ) is a action film starring Tom Cruise, who reprises his role as Ethan Hunt. The movie is written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie. It will be the seventh installment of the ‘Mission Impossible’ film series.

Except of Tom Cruise, the cast includes Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Henry Czerny, Vanessa Kirby and Rebecca Ferguson, who return to play their roles from previous Mission Impossible films.

Preparation for the first outdoor location, Venice, started on February 18, 2020 ( Instagramfoto by director McQuarrie), but was stopped a week later due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. The new start of filming took place in September 2020 ( McQuarrie in Norway ). The last outdoor scenes were shot in August 2021.

Mission Impossible 7 is branded as ‘Dead Reckoning’ and is scheduled to be released in the United States on July 14, 2023 , followed by a streaming release.

Rome was an incredible backdrop for Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One. I can't wait for everyone to see this next month on the big screen. pic.twitter.com/8wn7xR35tH — Tom Cruise (@TomCruise) June 22, 2023

Rome is one of the main Mission Impossible locations of the seventh installment. The shooting in Rome has last with interruptions seven weeks. The mayor of Rome (who was seeking re-election beginning October 2021) finally had good news for her citizens: of the approximately 35 million euro production costs in Italy, over 18 million was spent in Rome.

The film crew filmed mainly in the Monti neighbourhood. That’s the area between the Colosseum and the Trevi Fountain, to put it briefly. I live there. So I was able to witness the filming myself on several occasions.

Day one (Oct 6, 2020) started at the top of Via Panisperna, near my child’s primary school:

Some impressive chase scenes were shot there, including on the Via Panisperna. Here we see Ethan turning the corner of Via Milano:

And more #MissionImpossible7 : car chase at the corner of Via Milano and Via Panisperna, in #Rome . #TomCruise pic.twitter.com/IwXvvLfWNQ — Ewout Kieckens (@ewoutkieckens) October 6, 2020

James Bond was also chased in Monti

The filming in Monti, the Roman neighbourhood, reminds me of the filming for another action hero movie. In 2014, Daniel Craig aka James Bond was chased at exactly the same corner: Via Panisperna-Via Milano. Daniel Craig ultimately escapes a ruthless killer. It is all there to see in Spectre, the last James Bond film.

B . Spanish Steps

Days later, Cruise got rather rowdy around Bernini’s fountain at the base of the Spanish Steps. People of the Keats-Shelley House (dedicated to the English poets John Keats and Percy Bysshe Shelley) had a front-row seat in their museum. You can also see very well that whilst Cruise was at the steering wheel, he had not his hands on the wheel…

We love to see Tom Cruise racing through Piazza Di Spagna for #MissionImpossible7 pic.twitter.com/Ws3nt7tv63 — Keats-Shelley House (@Keats_Shelley) November 22, 2020

C. Roman Forum

The Viale dei Fori Imperiali (The Road of the Imperial Forums) is the only street in Rome that goes right through ancient Rome. On one side you have four fora (squares with a temple compound, or what is left of it), on the other side the Roman Forum. Especially the Forum dating from the Republican period is world-famous, because, among other things, the Senate building stands there.

In one of the scenes at one of the most beautiful Mission Impossible locations, two people are killed. It happens right in front of the statue of Augustus, Rome’s first emperor:

D. Piazza Venezia

The car chase also took place in Piazza Venezia, which translates as the Venice Square. The location is actually an extension of the Viale dei Fori Imperiali and also borders the Monti district. So the three locations (A, C and D) are linked with each other and make part of one and the same scene.

Auto da corsa e sgommate: piazza Venezia diventa ‘Mission Impossible’ con Tom Cruise https://t.co/OOxsNsfhAj — Repubblica (@repubblica) November 29, 2020

Another chase have been shot in the area behind Piazza Venezia, that is known as the ghetto (former jewish quarter). This time Cuise and Hayley Atwell are escaping on foot. The couple, coming from Via Cavalletti, holds each other hands or -better said- were handcuffed together:

Tom Cruise and Mission: Impossible 7 co-star Hayley Atwell are handcuffed together to shoot tense scene in Rome https://t.co/irl66Vm9mz — Daily Mail Celebrity (@DailyMailCeleb) November 24, 2020

Behind them is a menacing black SUV driven by the actress Pom Klementieff, who in the script is one of the bad ‘guys’. But the two manage to get away because the SUV is blocked as the street is too narrow for such a large car.

Other Mission Impossible locations in the ghetto are Via dei Funari, Via Caetani, Via del Delfino, Via della Tribuna di Campitelli and the Via Cavalletti.

Hunt and Cruise were back in Rome

It was not Ethan Hunt’s first visit to Rome. In Mission Impossible 3 (2006), the IMF agent visited the Vatican, rode a speedboat down the Tiber River and dressed up as a DHL delivery man who has a breakdown with his van. In the next scene, we see Cruise arguing with Jonathan Rhys Meyers. Both actors speak Italian quite well. What also stands out is the cliched way in which Italian life is portrayed (lots of hand gestures, lively discussions, chaos):

In the same year (2006) Tom Cruise was in Rome again to marry Katie Holmes (on Lake Bracciano, near Rome).

Mission Impossible 7 brought some relief to corona-stricken Venice in 2020. The Municipality received half a mllion euros alone for 3 days of shooting in the Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale) and space in the Arsenal as the production’s HQ.

In any case, the film production incurred high additional costs because the pandemic stopped the film making for a long time. The film crew interrupted filming in Venice (the first location) when the Covid-19 pandemic erupted in Europe, hitting particularly hard in Italy. The production did well to break down on time, on February 24, because on March 9, Italy was the first country in the world to impose a lockdown that applied to the entire country.

But just at the beginning and shortly before breaking up, CBS had some nice footage. Here we see a camera drone above Palazzo Contarini De Bovolo. This palace is famous for its outside spiral staircase:

Venice + no tourists = Hollywood set. Tom Cruise just wrapped his latest Mission Impossible here, and we just went behind the scenes of a Hemingway biopic starring Liev Schreiber and Matilde De Angelis. A. Palazzo Ducale

Palazzo Ducale is the splendid Venetian masterpiece of Gothic art that once was the residence of the Doges, Venetian rulers, and the seat of the Parliament of Venice, a City Republic.

The Ducal Palace is a unique setting that would allow Ethan Hunt to make his escape through the halls of the Senate, the ancient weapons depot, the underground passages, the Bridge of Sighs and the (in)famous prisons from which Giacomo Casanova also escaped. We have to wait for the release of the film to check which part of the palace has been used.

B. Rio di San Zan Degola

This canal (Rio) is quite long and leads to the Canale Grande, Venice’s largest canal. The shots were taken just behind the church of San Giacomo dell’Orio.

Here we see Cruise in his preparation to step over some boats to get to the other side. Apparently Ethan is in big trouble… as there are no shortage of bridges in Venice. A nice detail now that we are in the most romantic city in the world: one of the boats is called ‘Amore’ (‘Love’):

C. Ponte Conzafelzi

As mentioned, Venice has a multitude of bridges, more than 400, and one of them is the Ponte Conzafelzi. On this bridge, we see Hayley Atwell sitting on the ground as Cruise slowly approaches:

This bridge, also called the crooked ( storto ) or Pinneli, is rather special because it is made of cast iron. It is a hundred metres from one of the craziest bookshops in the world: the Libreria Acqua Alta or High Water Bookshop.

Things to do in Venice Italy

D. Other Venetian calli, rii and campi

Apart from the above locations, numerous other rio’s (canals), alleys or calli as they are called in local dialect and campo’s (squares) have been used. Below you can see Ethan running for his life while a cyclist rides ahead to give him some proper light:

More of Tom in set of ‘Mission Imposible 7’ in Venice, Italy ??(November 16,2020) ✨ pic.twitter.com/ABT5EnCnei — тoм crυιѕe,ғacĸ yeaн (@TomCruiseFY) November 17, 2020

According to Paramount , the producing company, McQuarrie should also have filmed at Campo Santa Maria del Giglio, Calle del Traghetto, Campo della Salute, Campo Santo Stefano, Campo Pisani, Ramo e Sotoportego Pisani, Calle Ca’ Genova and Campo San Vio.

Cruise’s ‘pad’ in Venice

Tom Cruise and other crew members stayed at Hotel Gritti Palace during the shooting in Venice (February and autumn 2020). This is one of those typical super de luxe hotels on the Canale Grande. It was built as a family palace in the 15th century and now belongs to the orbit of Marriott. It’s an 8 minute walk from St Mark’s Square.

A thank-you at the end

As usual at the end of a shooting on location, the film production thanked those involved, a very nice gesture.

Venice has blessed us with her history and haunting beauty, leaving a unique and indelible imprint on our film that mere words cannot express.

3. Abu Dhabi

The United Arab Emirates are not unknown territory for Ethan. He stayed there in 2010 as well. There, actually in Dubai, he climbed the highest skyscraper in the world (Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol). The scene where Cruise climbs the tower from the outside during an approaching sandstorm is one of the most famous Mission Impossible locations.

Scenes for Fallout (2018) were also shot in the same emirates union, specifically in the Liwa Desert (Empty Quarter), one of the largest sandy deserts in the world.

Three times is the charm. Below, we see McQuarrie and the lead actors on camels, marking the start to filming in the country:

Dit bericht bekijken op Instagram Een bericht gedeeld door Christopher McQuarrie (@christophermcquarrie)

At the first shooting day in Norway director McQuarrie showed what a fantastic setup his team had made:

Over the same bridge/ramp, Tom Cruise later drives into the ravine (he parachutes to the ground), as seen on Norwegian television:

Locations were chosen in the province of Møre og Romsdal (Western Norway).

A. Helsetkopen

In this mountainous area Tom Cruise, as usual, performed his own stunt (see above). That stunt was quite impressive: driving over a narrow ramp built on a mountain plateau, a free fall down and the (late) opening of his parachute. Cruise performed the stunt eight times for the best result, as he tells himself during the Graham Norton Show (BBC):

Helsetkopen is located north of Europe’s largest glacier area, called Jostedalsbreen. By the way, the Norwegian press is speculating that a Mission Impossible location for the eights installment will be set not far from here, in a place called Aurland.

Mission Impossible locations

B. Åndalsnes

Åndalsnes is not for nothing called the paradise for climbers. The film crew concentrated on the famous mountain wall Trollveggen. That is the highest vertical rock formation in Europe (1,100 meters high). Tom Cruise is well known with high rock formations and how not to fall off them. In Fallout (2018), he famously battled Henry Cavill on Preikestolen, a cliff formation. Preikestolen is also in Norway (even though the location goes on for Kashmir):

5. United Kingdom

We won’t go into too much detail about the UK Mission Impossible locations, but let’s show you at last a spectaculair FB photo of a local villager near the Darlton quarry:

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1 arrived in US theaters on July 12, 2023 (previously scheduled for July 14). Dolby Cinema, IMAX, and other premium large formats hosted early access screenings for the film on July 10, 2023, at 7:00 pm. Tickets went on sale on June 14, and those who bought a ticket were also able to see special bonus content exclusively at the event, as well as receive limited edition collectibles, including a poster and an IMF enamel pin. The movie was originally scheduled to premiere on July 23, 2021. Subsequent delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic pushed the date, first to November 19, then May 27, 2022, then to September 30, 2022, then July 14, and finally to its current date.

Not at the moment, no. The film will be made available to stream on Paramount+ sometime after the film's theatrical debut. Unlike some of Paramount's biggest 2022 releases such as Smile , The Lost City , and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 , Tom Cruise's last film, Top Gun: Maverick waited 209 days after its theatrical release before it finally premiered on Paramount+, and the seventh Mission: Impossible film will likely be no different, so the new film likely won't be on Paramount+ until early 2024.

Tom Cruise headlines the cast, reprising his lead role as Ethan Hunt. Besides Cruise, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1 also sees the return of Ving Rhames as Luther Stickell, Henry Czerny as Eugene Kittridge, Simon Pegg as Benji Dunn, Rebecca Ferguson as Ilsa Faust, Vanessa Kirby as Alanna Mitsopolis, and Frederick Schmidt as Zola Mitsopolis, all of whom will be back in their old roles from the previous films. Hayley Atwell ( Captain America: The First Avenger ) is playing a character called Grace. According to Christopher McQuarrie, Grace is a "destructive force of nature". Atwell has also described Grace's loyalties as "somewhat ambiguous".

“The interesting thing we're exploring is her resistance to a situation she finds herself in,” Atwell told the Light the Fuse podcast. “How she starts off, where she becomes. The journey of what she comes into and what is asked of her and potentially where she ends up.”

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1 also has another connection to the first movie. Henry Czerny returns as Eugene Kittridge, the former director of the IMF who last appeared in the 1996 Mission: Impossible . The film's primary villain is played by Esai Morales ( Ozark ). Nicholas Hoult ( Renfield ) was originally set to play the role, but he was reportedly forced to drop out due to scheduling conflicts. Pom Klementieff ( Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ) plays another one of the film's villains, an assassin and the right-hand woman of Morale's character. McQuarrie praised Klementieff's performance in the movie saying in an interview:

“I dare you to go to this movie and try not to look at Pom. More than any other actor I’ve worked with, you cannot take your eyes off her. She’s completely compelling, completely dynamic. It was quite amazing. It changed the way I designed shots, it changed the way I wrote scenes, it changed the way we dressed the character. It’s just raw, raw power that’s unrecognisable from Mantis in Guardians.”

Shea Whigham ( Boardwalk Empire ) plays Jasper Briggs, a man who is attempting to track down Hunt and his team. Additional cast members include Greg Tarzan Davis ( Top Gun: Maverick ), Charles Parnell ( Top Gun: Maverick ), Rob Delaney ( Deadpool 2 ), Cary Elwes ( The Princess Bride ), Indira Varma ( Obi-Wan Kenobi ), Mark Gatiss ( Sherlock ), and Mariela Garriga ( Bloodline ). Angela Bassett was expected to reprise her role as CIA director Erika Sloane from Fallout . However, the actress confirmed to Collider in July 2021 that she couldn’t be in the movie due to conflicts caused by COVID-19.

The first official trailer for Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1 hit the web on May 23, 2022, 14 months ahead of the film's release date and timed to the release of another Tom Cruise blockbuster, Top Gun: Maverick . The trailer gives fans their first real good look at all the high-octane stunts, action set-pieces, and new destinations along with the new characters played by Hayley Atwell, Pom Klementieff, and Esai Morales. Best of all the trailer shows off Rebecca Ferguson's Ilsa Faust brandishing a sword in one scene and sporting an eyepatch in another. Additionally, 20 minutes of footage from the movie was screened at CinemaCon 2023. While that won't be made available to the public, here's the link to a description of the action-packed footage .

The full trailer was released by Paramount almost an entire year after the teaser trailer.

A 30-second TV spot for the film aired on June 1, 2023, during the NBA Finals. And on June 29, we also got a new behind-the-scenes video showing Tom Cruise once again doing some death-defying stunts. This time, the action star does speedflying . To know what that is, here's the video:

Filming on Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1 was scheduled to begin under the working title “Libra” on February 20, 2020, in Venice. The movie was supposed to be filmed in Venice for three weeks before moving to Rome for 40 days. However, production was halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic breaking out in Italy. In July 2020, the UK gave permission for the crew to begin filming without going through the mandatory 14-day quarantine. Similar permission was granted for filming in Norway soon after that.

Filming began in earnest on September 6, 2020 . McQuarrie revealed the start of filming with posts on his Instagram profile . Production was halted in Italy again in October 2020 after 12 people tested positive for COVID-19 on set. This time, filming was resumed just one week later. In February 2021, production in the Middle East was concluded. On April 20, 2021, filming commenced in the small village of Levisham, North Yorkshire, UK, for a train wreck scene. Filming was paused again for 14 days in June 2021 after a member of the production reportedly tested positive for COVID-19. In August 2021, the crew began filming in Birmingham's Grand Central Station. Production was reported to have wrapped in early September 2021 but presumably, some more filming was involved as the latest news is that the movie's production ended on April 29, 2023 , this time confirmed by the director.

This new installment in the Mission: Impossible franchise is written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie, who also did the previous two Mission: Impossible movies. McQuarrie also produced the film alongside Tom Cruise. Skydance's David Ellison , Dana Goldberg , and Don Granger will serve as executive producers on the film alongside Tommy Gormley ( Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker ). Lorne Balfe , who composed the score for the previous film, returns as the composer. Fraser Taggart ( Edge of Tomorrow ) is the cinematographer while Academy Award nominee Eddie Hamilton ( Top Gun: Maverick ) serves as the editor.

Yes, indeed. Tom Cruise continues to do his own stunts in Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1 (and probably all the other Mission: Impossible movies to come). And this time, he’s taking things to a whole other level. During CinemaCon 2021, Paramount Pictures unveiled a video showcasing what Cruise himself describes as his “most dangerous stunt ever” . The sequence involves Cruise riding a motorcycle up a ramp and off a cliff, jumping off said motorcycle, and then parachuting to the ground.

To prepare for the stunt, the actor supposedly went through 500 hours of skydiving training and a whopping 1300 motorcycle jumps. It also took months of construction work to build the ramp used for the sequence. And as if that’s not mind-blowing already, reports say Cruise did the stunt six times before he got it right. Short of shooting Cruise into space on a rocket, it’s hard to see how they’re going to top this for the next one.

The nearly 10-minute featurette was released online on December 19, 2022, after premiering exclusively before IMAX showings of Avatar: The Way of Water . The featurette shows the process behind filming what is said to be the biggest stunt in cinema history, as Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt rides a motorcycle off a ramp on a cliff, jumps off the motorcycle, and skydives his way down. It also feels like Cruise is once again proving all his naysayers wrong. McQuarrie revealed in an interview with Empire Magazine that this stunt wasn't even the most difficult to film , with that title belonging to a fight scene between Cruise and Esai Morales on top of a moving steam train.

"All the days on the train are exhausting. The train just sucks you dry. But in a good way. We're making a movie that involves sequences that they just don't shoot practically anymore, and haven't in a long, long time. The sequence that we're shooting right now is no exception. And like most things on Mission: Impossible, if we had known what the challenges were when we started out, we would never have done it."

On June 14, 2023, another behind-the-scenes featurette was released by Paramount , detailing a car chase set in the streets of Rome. For the dangerous sequence, the featurette shows that Cruise drove two different cars at high speeds and drifting, all while handcuffed to Hayley Atwell.

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One is easily the biggest film in the franchise thus far. The train sequence will keep you on the edge of your seat, and we get a behind-the-scenes video on what went into making it.

The official synopsis for Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1 from Paramount reads:

In Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his IMF team embark on their most dangerous mission yet: To track down a terrifying new weapon that threatens all of humanity before it falls into the wrong hands. With control of the future and the fate of the world at stake, and dark forces from Ethan's past closing in, a deadly race around the globe begins. Confronted by a mysterious, all-powerful enemy, Ethan is forced to consider that nothing can matter more than his mission – not even the lives of those he cares about most.

The director didn't say much about what the story would be like before the release. That said, he did talk about how the new movie expands on the emotional development of the cast during his appearance on the Light the Fuse podcast.

“When we went into making Fallout , I said to Tom, ‘I really want to make this more of an emotional journey for [Ethan Hunt],'” McQuarrie revealed. “Going into this, I said, ‘I want to take what we learned from Fallout and apply it to every character in the movie. I want everyone to have an emotional arc. … I just want the movie to have more feeling across the board.”

The director also confirmed that artificial intelligence would be a major factor in the film's plot.

Very early conversations, probably the earliest conversations about this were in 2018/2019, and we were looking for the villain, the next threat in Mission . We've done nuclear threats, we've done chemical threats, biological threats, you did the Rabbit's Foot, and God knows what threat that was. In trying to keep it fresh, we were looking outward, and the big conversation I had with Tom [Cruise] very early on was about technology, information technology, and what, now, everyone is talking about is AI.

McQuarrie also noted that casting Esai Morales allowed McQuarrie to tackle Ethan Hunt's past , which figures into the plot in a big way.

“Casting Esai allowed us to explore things with those characters and the notion of Ethan’s past. Ethan has a past that predates the IMF, and that allowed us to explore that with a character that knew Ethan before Ethan was Ethan. That’s part of who Gabriel is. Every detail of the story is very carefully considered. People who want to do their homework can derive from that name, whatever they please.”

Some of you may be wondering what the title Dead Reckoning even means and how it pertains to the plot of the film. In an interview with Empire Magazine McQuarrie hinted that the title refers to a particular deadly source that poses the greatest threat yet to Ethan Hunt and his team.

“There are many things emerging from Ethan’s past. Dead reckoning’ is a navigational term. It means you’re picking a course based solely on your last known position and that becomes quite the metaphor not only for Ethan, but several characters.”

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning has been shrouded in so much secrecy that even Simon Pegg didn't know the name of the film until the trailer was released . During an interview with Collider's own Steve Weintraub for the movie Luck, Pegg said the following:

"Do you know what? I found out on the day of the trailer and not from Chris McQuarrie. I found out from the trailer. No, no one told me. So I texted McQ and was like, ' Dead Reckoning ? Were you going to tell us that at some point?' I heard it was going to be something else, but I like that. I like that because it reminds me of what ... Land of the Dead was originally called Dead Reckoning . So finally, I get to be in a film called Dead Reckoning ."

With recent blockbusters such as John Wick: Chapter 4 , Avatar: The Way of Water , and Oppenheimer all having runtimes that have clocked in over or right under 3 hours, there were rumors floating around that Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One would follow suit. Fortunately (or maybe unfortunately for some), the film clocks in at 2 hours and 36 minutes without credits, which still makes it the longest film yet in the franchise.

Yes, a sequel to Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning was announced along with the seventh film. The original plan was to shoot both movies back to back and release Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 2 on August 5, 2022. Unfortunately, COVID-19 messed up those plans, so the eighth movie was pushed to July 7, 2023, before being pushed again to June 28, 2024. As a result of the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, the movie has been delayed again, this time to May 23, 2025 . We've also heard that the title may be subject to change as well so stay tuned for more on that.

Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning, Part 1 review: Tom Cruise hunts for franchise's action crown

Cruise outdoes even his own daredevil achievements in the latest entry in the franchise.

For over a decade now, Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie 's mission has been to up the ante on action movies. Following the smash success of 2022's Top Gun: Maverick (which McQuarrie co-wrote), the two are back together as star and director in Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning, Part One , the latest in their Mission: Impossible team-ups that began with 2015's Rogue Nation . While the title (in theaters July 12) might feel unwieldy, the film itself is anything but, its nearly three-hour running time passing as quickly as it takes a message to self-destruct.

Cruise is back as Ethan Hunt, the leader of the Impossible Mission Force, in the first of what is being billed as a potential two-part farewell to the character. When a sentient AI force nicknamed "the Entity" is at risk of falling into the wrong hands, Hunt is tasked with retrieving a two-part key essential to controlling (or destroying) it. With his reliable team, Luther (Ving Rhames), Benji ( Simon Pegg ), and now-mainstay Ilsa Faust ( Rebecca Ferguson ), Hunt sets out to track down the key and destroy it. A too-smart-for-her-own-good pickpocket, Grace ( Hayley Atwell ), adds chaos to the mix, as Ethan pursues a shadowy foe from his past, Gabriel ( Esai Morales ).

The golden key is a solid movie McGuffin, with the ramifications of "the Entity" feeling eerily timely in a world where the role of AI in our lives is a hot button subject (particularly among those currently on strike in the film industry ). But as always, it's the action sequences, Cruise's death-wish level stunts, and chemistry of the core ensemble that will keep audiences strapped in for the adrenaline ride.

After the high-water mark of 2018's Mission: Impossible — Fallout , it seemed nigh impossible for Cruise and McQuarrie to outdo themselves. While Dead Reckoning is not a better film in totality, its action and thrills are next level. A car chase through a foreign city has become a signature centerpiece of the films, and this time it's in Rome, complete with a tumble down the city's iconic Spanish Steps and the terrifically funny inclusion of a Fiat (itself a winking nod to the Mini-Cooper chase of the original The Italian Job ).

One might wonder — how many ways can you reimagine a car chase? But the Mission: Impossible franchise seems to have no shortage of inventiveness in that department. From the types of vehicles used to the added wrinkle of handcuffed drivers to the locale itself, the chase sequence in Dead Reckoning will keep audiences on the edge of their seats. McQuarrie puts us in the cars with our heroes, catching us equally off-guard as they are when a sudden obstacle appears. There's some much-needed injections of levity among the thrills, as McQuarrie wisely understands the value of undercutting tension to give the audience a breath so he can more effectively ratchet it back up.

Cruise is never more likable than he is as Ethan Hunt, a highly skilled agent whose greatest weakness is his love for his found family, the fellow members of his IMF team. McQuarrie is adept at balancing the character's (and the actor's) ability to hurl himself into danger, while also never failing to remind us of his humanity. (To whoever put Cruise in glasses, a vest, and rolled-up sleeves in an Italian library, my thirst for stern academics salutes you — the man has never looked hotter.)

In the last decade, Cruise has made a point of executing stunts himself, forgoing the use of visual effects whenever possible. Dead Reckoning features what Cruise calls his riskiest stunt yet and the culmination of his years of motorcycle riding onscreen. In the climax, Ethan pursues a train, attempting to climb aboard while it's in motion. This necessitates that he ride a motorcycle off an extremely high cliff to free fall until he pulls his parachute. To say it's anything short of miraculous would be a lie. It's quite literally jaw-dropping. It's hard to know whether to gape or to grab one's face in abject terror as we watch the moment unfold. Only Cruise would try something so perilous for the sake of our entertainment — and it's hard not to be impressed by the foolhardiness and bravery of such a move.

Besides the Roman car chase and death-defying cliff jump, Dead Reckoning abounds with taut, nimbly drawn sequences — from a Lawrence of Arabia- esque sand dune shootout to an airport cat-and-mouse game to hand-to-hand combat amidst the canals of Venice. It all comes to a head in the film's climax aboard the Orient Express that blends the suspense of North by Northwest with audacious action, namely a largely practical effects-laden crash and subsequent escape attempt. McQuarrie set out to pay tribute to the likes of Buster Keaton and David Lean with the crash sequence, and he achieves his goal and then some.

As is now the norm with this franchise, Dead Reckoning both offers new faces and brings back some familiar ones too. Vanessa Kirby returns with her odd combination of skittishness and ice-pick precision as the White Widow, as does Ferguson as Ilsa Faust, one of the best female characters in an action franchise ever. Here, Ilsa gets a Venice-set sword fight that is breathtaking in its skill and balletic grace, enhanced by Fraser Taggart's cinematography that somehow consistently blends visceral danger with travelog.

Perhaps most welcome is Henry Czerny as the government's Eugene Kittridge, a role he has not returned to since 1996's original Mission: Impossible. His dry repartee with Ethan hasn't lost a step in the years between, as he wrestles with trusting Ethan's skills and his own position within U.S. intelligence. He's somehow both oily and noble, his loyalties and values brilliantly opaque.

Both Shea Whigham and Pom Klementieff are superb additions. Whigham has a reputation for elevating everything he touches, and that's no exception here as he provides abundant humor and a moral foil for Ethan as Jasper Briggs, a government agent intent on taking Ethan into custody at any cost. Klementieff features as assassin Paris, who largely exists with wordless menace and snarling bravado. She has the versatility and expressiveness of a silent film star, her presence no less engaging and frightening for her scant dialogue.

But the real jewel in the crown of this ensemble is Atwell, who plays the mercenary Grace with a doe-eyed confusion that belies her deep intelligence. Grace, as she quickly learns, is in way over her head with the IMF. But isn't that the name of the game? They're not the Impossible Mission Force for nothing. In some ways, Dead Reckoning seems to be setting up Grace as a potential successor to Ethan, and Atwell imbues her with her best Peggy Carter sass and know-how. She's scrappy and resourceful if out of her depth, and it's her narrative arc and Ethan's directive about choices that provide the thematic heart of the film.

Ethan Hunt, and the members of his team, have always been told that their missions are contingent on whether or not they choose to accept them. Choice, then, is vital in the fight between good and evil and the shifting scales of world domination that make up the global stakes of the franchise. Dead Reckoning, though given the label "Part One," is thankfully a complete film unto itself — but it also sets up the purported "culmination" of the series (or at least, Hunt's role within it) that is to come in Part Two next year.

The fact that McQuarrie and Cruise routinely set and then raise the bar for the gold standard of action movies is the lure of the franchise — but it's the characters, their foibles, their wit, and their deep humanity that are Mission: Impossible's secret weapon. Ethan Hunt and the franchise at large remind us that our choices are what define us, if we only choose to accept the path laid before us. Grade: A-

Anne Hathaway Takes Risky Business High Fashion

Everyone may be in Cannes right now, but Anne Hathaway is making us think that Rome is actually the place to be. Today in the Italian capital, the actor stepped out of the Bulgari Hotel decked out in the brand’s jewelry.

But it was Hathaway’s outfit that caught our eyes for its nod to a classic, oft-referenced film: Risky Business. Hathaway wore a custom Gap sleeveless white maxi shirtdress by Gap Inc. creative director Zac Posen , left mostly unbuttoned to create a thigh-high slit. Styled in a state of undress, the collar folded over to reveal a white corset bodice, giving the look a sexy, rolled-out-of-bed touch.

Risky Business

Naturally, the look was a far more elevated version of Tom Cruise’s character’s signature look. In lieu of his famous white socks, Hathaway wore a pair of white pointy-toe pumps. But perhaps the most stark level up was the formidable Bulgari jewelry. She accessorized with a diamond necklace with an enormous sapphire center stone sitting atop her collarbone, a diamond Serpenti bracelet and diamond earrings.

With this extreme approach to high-low dressing, Anne Hathaway took a risk that definitely paid off in our book.
