One of the few remaining bands from the ‘Emo scene’, The Used from Orem, Utah formed in 2001 consisting of: Bert McCracken (vocals, keys), Jeph Howard (bass), Quinn Allman (guitar) and Branden Steineckert (drums).

With the initial material preceding the band’s formation, after holding auditions at Howard’s abode, McCracken was invited along and he was so impressed with the quality of songs they had already worked on that he agreed to join. Shortly after this, they decided upon the band name Used, a reflection of the hardships that they had faced as individuals and the feeling they had been left with. With everything in place, the band went ahead and recorded “Demos from the Basement” and sent it to Goldfinger frontman John Feldmann. So enthused by what he had heard, Feldmann made it his mission to find them a label. In 2001 the band signed with Reprise Records.

Finding out there was another band in existence with the same name, the band added prefix ‘the’ and would become known as The Used. In 2002 they released their debut self-titled album produced by John Feldmann. Certifying gold, the album featured the singles “A Box Full of Sharp Objects”, “The Taste of Ink” and “Buried Myself Alive”. Off the back of that album, the band were invited to play at Ozzfest, Projekt Revolution and Warped Tour.

In 2004, tragedy struck as McCracken’s then girlfriend died of an overdose while pregnant with his child. His angst fed into their second album released later that year, “In Love and Death” as an open dedication to her reflected in the track “Hard to Say”. The album also produced the singles “I Caught Fire” and “All That I’ve Got”.

Two years later Steineckert announced his departure from the band as he went on to join punk band Rancid and was replaced by Dan Whitesides. Spending the majority of 2007 touring on Taste of Chaos and Give it a Name festival before releasing their third album “Lies for the Liars”. The album featured the popular tracks “The Bird and the Worm”, “Pretty Handsome Awkward” and “Liar Liar (Burn In Hell)” and peaked at number five in the US Billboard charts.

In 2011 McCracken and the band set up their own record label called Anger Music Group in conjunction with Hopeless Records, giving the band an opportunity for more room for creative control. It was through this label the band released their fifth album “Vulnerable” in 2012.

Though The Used may shy away from the term ‘emo’ band, none-the-less the band capture extravagant and expressive music producing catchy anthems which forever induce fond memories.

Live reviews

I am a Heavy Metal / Speed Metal / Adrenaline band / crowd seeker.

Walked into these concerts unknowing of The Used's sound or Energy - left with nothing but respect and admiration for this lead singer, this band and their dedicated - devoted - Diehard fans ; a new Fan For Sure!! Went to see both nights of The Used @ Starland Ballroom = April 29th and April 30th , 2016. They were to play 15th Anniversary of their very 1st (self titled) album on the first night and their 2nd album (In Love And Death) on the 2nd night.

First of all both nights were Sold Out ( I am a season Ticket Holder).. the crowd were a mix of both men and women who were 90 - 95% die hard fans.. Girls were practically in tears just over the fact they were seeing this group live...the majority of the crowd knew word for word - screaming , dancing , holding hands, high five'n, fist pumping, crowd surfing and circle mosh'n in proud word for word face to face joy sharing of lyrics , hugs , admiration, love and shared pleasure to be singing the words with their admired beloved band...the fan in front of me lost most of her voice halfway into the concert and proudly shared with all around her the fact she was screaming the lyrics with so much energy that she had lost her voice. Okay - that's just the crowd/ Fan reaction ... You definitely do not need to know this band to see all they stand for - who they are and why they have such a devoted all knowing and all Loving Fan base !! To say this group gives 1000% (not a typo = One Thousand Percent) is an understatement. The words and the feelings and the emotions and the sincerity of this lead singer and every member in the band just poured out throughout this entire concert - you could not possibly leave without respect and admiration for who they are and what they stand for and how much they truly love their fans and living life itself. They are true and honest and hit you where it counts - in reality - to the heart and not to mention the beyond sexy voice and personality of this Lead Singer - Good Lord !!! So True - So Touching - So Emotional - Rock'n Hard - Singing Together - Joing Together to Share Life's Up's and Downs together - helping one another Smile and Stumble Through Life Together - We Are Here - Knowing What You Are Going Through Together - life can sometimes be rough, but sharing our knowledge of this together through song and love and togetherness will help us all Smile And Stumble Through...Together!!!

Message Felt !!!

Message Loved !!

If you haven't experienced these feelings at a concert and want to know what sharing these feelings all together is truly about ??? - I highly recommend you track down this Group and make sure their concert playing venue and your path cross on the same night !!! It's a beautiful Experience!!

Get in on the Experience while its out there for the sharing !!! My hopes are for this band to continue touring and sharing for as long as they possibly can = a talent and gift for so many who truly are deserving to share the healing of song and music - The Used are an Inspiration to what all bands truly long to be = connecting so hard with their fans and allowing them to accept life for what it truly is - face value - sometimes hard but we are here Together to help one another - to love one another - to Smile And Stumble Through!!

There's a reason I've seen The Used almost a dozen times. Simply put: The experience. My first trip to see them was a fifteen hour drive and it was worth it to say the very least. From Bert's hilarious dancing to Dan's tricks behind his drum set, The Used is sure to deliver a night that is both beyond your imagination and unforgettable. Each and every time is better than the last.

Not knowing what to expect my first time around, I waited in a line for 12 hours and entered the venue to be approached by some of the nicest, die hard fans I've ever met in my life. The Used has yet to disappoint a crowd and it shows when you see the dedication their fans have always shown. You'll inevitably leave the venue with a handful of lasting friendships, as I have each time.

I have yet to leave any of The Used shows without tears streaming down my face and no voice for days. Weather you're a long time fan of The Used or you're recently discovering them, it's an experience anyone can enjoy. Old tunes, new tunes and the wall of death is a night sure to please anyone.

These four incredibly talented individuals can turn an intimate, acoustic evening to a raging circle pit in a matter of seconds. Their ability to capture a crowd is one you'll never find at another show.

The Used has a song and a show for everyone. From heartbreaks to overcoming addictions, moving forward and even revolutions, you'll hear a beat and a song that will speak to you and stay with you forever.

The Used is an American post-hardcore band from Orem, Utah, formed in 2001 and have been touring and recording since the incarnation. They now have a loyal fan base around the globe and when their latest tour stopped off in Birmingham it was no exception to the levels of anticipation to see this cult favourite.

Playing an incredibly short set of just eight songs, the band still made sure the crowd had a fantastic evening as they tore through the first three tracks with very little pause or interaction. Lead singer Bert McCracken whipped his fans into frenzy though with the most subtle confident look or rise of a hand during early single 'Take It Away'. The inter-band dynamics are also a great way to get the audience hyped up as the members perform extended jams to the likes of 'Revolution' and clearly enjoy playing together as a unit.

Despite only being onstage for eight songs, the band have developed earlier works with complex introductions and jaw dropping instrumentals that keeps the crowd cheering along and makes the gig feel like a stretched out experience. Nobody leaves disappointed as the final notes of first single 'A Box Full Of Sharp Objects' ends.

Bert Mccraken did not even speak for the first three songs but conducted the audience with a flick of his hand. I think the front man of any band is crucial to their live performance and Bert is up there with the best. Once he talked to us there was nothing the audience would not do. The Used were amazing. Over 10 years together and still producing new amazing music that speaks to you. The current album is worth any investment and the songs capture your undivided attention. I cannot wait to see them again and hope to hear more of the new album live. This was my first time seeing The Used and I wonder what took me so long to catch up.

Great show! The Used did a fantastic job and I had a blast. The venue was packed, security did their job well and everyone had a great time! The Used played all of the classics and some of their new material, which was great too! Their showmanship was hands down excellent, very engaging and loving of their fans!

The Used are a pretty great live act. Super stage presence and great inter-band-member vibes. Really got the crowd going and took the time to talk and generate some buzz.

Awesome touch with the 'serenade' from the balcony at Koko, too.

Today, Rock icons The Used have announced their first UK tour in 5 years. The announcement follows the release of their critically acclaimed new album “Toxic Positivity” which is out now via Hassle Records/Big Noise.

“Hello UK! Get ready to fucking rock cause The Used are comin’! We absolutely cannot wait to play for you! It’s been far too long and we have missed you so much! You don’t wanna miss out!  See you all there ♡  – Bert McCracken

The band will return to the following venues this December with support from The Home Team and Honey Revenge:

4th Manchester, Academy

5th Glasgow, SWG3 Galvanisers

7th London, O2 Forum Kentish Town

8th Bristol, Marble Factory

9th Birmingham, O2 Academy

Tickets are on general sale on Friday August 18th at 10am BST from www.theused.net

Over 20 years into their career, Toxic Positivity is everything fans have come to know and love from The Used – straightforward, in-your-face, destructive, and vulnerable all at once. Working together with longtime friend and collaborator John Feldmann to produce the album, Toxic Positivity is filled with The Used’s signature sound, earworm hooks and erratic riffs.

Stream Toxic Positivity now at https://theused.ffm.to/toxicpositivity

Described as a “day-in-the-life journey of a depressed, anxiety-ridden person” by vocalist Bert McCracken, the tell-all record shares the highs and lows of depression and addiction through a cohesive body of work, speaking to the ever-changing headspace that he was experiencing at the time of writing. “This record is quite tough for me to listen to,” he adds, “because it’s a reflection of times in my life that have been some of my lowest ever.”

Absorbed front-to-back in its finished form, Toxic Positivity pulls from every facet of The Used’s definitive sound. There’s the buzzsaw riff of “Pinky Swear (Save Me)”; the sweeping, arena-sized chorus of “Headspace”; the riveting hooks of “The Worst I’ve Ever Been”; and the underlying pop sensibilities of “I Hate Everybody.” Displaying a depth of sonic variety while never allowing an inch of slack into its taut cohesiveness, this is the past, present, and future of The Used represented in 11 tracks that combined barely break the half-hour mark.

Toxic Positivity Tracklist

1. Worst I’ve Ever Been

3. I Hate Everybody

4. Pinky Swear

5. Headspace

7. Dopamine

8. Dancing With a Brick Wall

9. Top of the World

10. House of Sand

11. Giving Up

For as long as he can remember, McCracken has used music as an outlet to lay bare his innermost thoughts and emotions. For 23 years, that writing has enabled The Used to deeply resonate with fans the world over. Exploding off the back of universally adored rock anthems such as “The Taste Of Ink,” “Take It Away” and “Pretty Handsome Awkward,” the many millions of streams and record sales (including the platinum-certified The Used and In Love And Death) their career has yielded are one thing; the human connection formed between artist and audience is priceless, however. To that end alone, The Used can consider themselves four of the luckiest and richest men in music.

Toxic Positivity speaks of the strength of the band’s collective collaboration and also their innate, unquenchable thirst to create. “I think we have no choice but to write and write and write,” says McCracken. “It has always just been in us, and we’ve had to get it out. I read a quote once that said you either work your entire lifetime on four great pieces, or you write thousands of pieces and become great that way. Everything that we feel, I think it always makes for a good song.”

In that regard, McCracken is humble to a fault, for the simple fact that the songs within Toxic Positivity are far more than merely good songs. They mark the latest chapter in a truly great career. And, like those that have come before them, they will truly matter.

I used to be a musical contrarian – now I’ve become an unlikely Swiftie

Amy fleming was a surly teen who preferred scrotty music venues to elaborate pop shows – until her 11-year-old’s love for taylor swift converted her. now, ahead of the arrival on uk shores of swift’s juggernaut eras tour, she writes of how the singer-songwriter has brought joy to her and her daughter, article bookmarked.

I have a big fat confession to make. After a lifetime of eschewing the mainstream, I’ve become an unlikely Swiftie , and I have my 11-year-old daughter to thank for it.

If you’d told me 10 years ago that I would get swept up in Taylor Swift mania at the very peak of the pop star’s global dominance , I would have shaken my head disdainfully. I was a contrarian; a forever surly teen who only relatively recently grew up enough to openly enjoy firework displays without cringing at all the oohing and ahhing. I was a shy outsider with a preference for scrotty, small music venues. But when my daughter, now almost 12, started playing the Swift classic “Shake It Off” around the house a year or two ago, I found myself appreciating what this woman was singing. (Haters gonna hate, slutshame and all the rest, but I’m just gonna shake it off, and do what the hell I want and need, essentially.)

I definitely didn’t only start liking Swift’s music because I wanted to be down with my kid (this is absolutely impossible, which all parents must accept). In fact, as a protective parent – and I wish I didn’t have this fuddy-duddy reaction as much as I do – I’m just as likely to skew quietly cautious of what she’s consuming. But with Swift, the opposite happened.

Her music has unexpectedly become a cultural gift for me and my daughter, who is perched precariously at the cusp of being big enough to start living all that is alluded to in her best songs. It’s a gift partly because the music is simply something we can bond over as her focus lurches towards the world outside of home. Growing up is hard, but with Swift’s songs around, it’s easier to pick yourself up and dust yourself down.

Late last year I took my daughter to the cinema to see Swift’s concert film, The Eras Tour (where a random woman fumbled through the darkness to hand her a friendship bracelet and I was secretly miffed I wasn’t offered one). A school friend recently taught her the piano chords to Swift’s 2020 track “Champagne Problems”, which she taught me as soon as she got home. We are now addicted to singing and playing it together. I love that song – it has the wistful small-town sadness I first cherished in Fountains of Wayne’s “Hackensack”, albeit from a different POV.

Last month, the Friday that Swift’s album The Tortured Poets Department dropped, I jumped out of bed like it was Christmas morning, gathered up my daughter and over breakfast we listened. I can’t explain why this event made me cry, but I found myself having to get up and busy myself with my back to the room. No one needs to see my flushed, water-logged face while they’re getting ready for school.

Fascinating and moving: Swift’s Netflix documentary ‘Miss Americana’

Listening to Swift together is also a means for us to talk about life while avoiding excruciating parental sermons. I try not to say too much, but I’m there for questions about lyrics my daughter is curious about. I’m not saying Swift is the ultimate role model – that’s not her job, anyway. But having grown up in a world in which the teenage boys got to choose the music and make all the noise while lairy builders got to dish out all the unsolicited approval, I respect how Swift has charted her journey to rising above and calling out all that grin-and-bear-it, good-girl bull. Sure, she is a marketing machine as well as an artist – her campaigns are carefully crafted and pervasive – and I could be cynical about that if I wanted, but if something speaks to me, why dismiss it because it’s successful?

I might have done that if it wasn’t for my daughter, but it’s surprisingly liberating to finally be able to embrace the mainstream. I am not ashamed to say I was fascinated and moved by Swift’s 2020 Netflix documentary, Miss Americana , filmed during a tumultuous period in which she toured her polarising 2017 album Reputation and took her first tentative steps into politics. I found it to be a tale of resilience, about how standing up for what you believe (she also fought and won a series of legal battles over a sexual assault) and generally caring less about having everyone like you actually pays off in myriad ways, from making even more honest and compelling art to hating your body less.

There are plenty of positive feminist messages. I love how I can show my daughter a beautiful clip of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie telling female students to “forget about likeability,” and the idea that, “you’re supposed to twist yourself into shapes to make yourself likeable, that you’re supposed to hold back, don’t quite say, don’t be too pushy”. (I had to turn away and busy myself for a moment during this, too.) And then we can listen to the gloriously irritated lyrics of Swift’s “But Daddy I Love Him”, which appear to be addressing a certain strata of Swift’s so-called adoring public that likes to cast judgement on her romantic choices: “I’ll tell you something right now/I’d rather burn my whole life down/Than listen to one more second of all this griping and moaning/I’ll tell you something about my good name/It’s mine alone to disgrace/I don’t cater to all these vipers dressed in empath’s clothing.” And we can revel in her fearless fury.

Grand tour: Swift during the Lisbon stop of her Eras tour, which hits the UK next week

As a parent, I also love how sweary the latest album is. Swearing can be empowering – just ask the scientists . I have cursed with guttural glee since primary school (where I was officially “best swearer”), so it’s been a struggle living with small children who are taught that using “strong words” is practically a sin, to the extent that mine were horrified if my innate bad language ever surfaced in front of them. But now The Tortured Poets Department has finally helped my daughter see it’s not only evil mum who swears and that what I’ve been telling her about most adults swearing all the freaking time is true. (This could eventually be her gateway to other sweary female artists like Jenny Lewis, Lana del Rey, or my favourite, Self Esteem aka Rebecca Lucy Taylor.)

Perhaps, thanks to Swift, my daughter will grow up in a world in which burly men won’t dare say “pardon my French” if they accidentally eff in her vicinity, as though to protect a delicate and pure petal of a person, but really to infantilise her. I sincerely hope Swift isn’t holding back the F-bombs in the all-new Tortured Poets section of the Eras tour, which kicks off its UK leg next week . Either way, though, the works of Taylor Swift are bringing me and my daughter joy, and this has been a brilliant surprise.

Where Taylor Swift fans can get the most reasonably priced UK Eras tour resale tickets

W ith just days to go until Taylor Swift plays her first Eras Tours show on UK soil, the countdown is well and truly on. While many lucky Swifties were able to get their hands on the sought-after tickets when they went on sale last year, others will be scrambling to secure theirs at the last minute.

The Love Story singer-songwriter is set to play three shows in Edinburgh this weekend (June 7, June 8 and June 9) before hitting up Cardiff and London towards the end of the month. Unfortunately, Taylor will not be paying a visit to the AO Arena or the recently opened Co-Op Live, but she will be within an hour's drive of Manchester, playing three consecutive shows at Liverpool's Anfield Stadium on June 13, June 14 and June 15.

All hope is not lost, though, as there is still a chance to bag some reasonably priced tickets to see Taylor's impressive three hour set . Fans who can't attend the shows many resell their tickets before the All Too Well singer takes to the stage, as the Irish Mirror reports.

Ticketmaster has officially activated resale for the stadium concerts, however ticket transfer will not be made available until much closer to the date of the shows. Once it goes lives, tickets will likely be snapped up very quickly. But fans can keep an eye on Ticketmaster, here , for lucky official resale tickets. For those desperate to see the concert, another option is to consider ticket resale websites.

Viagogo is selling Eras Tour tickets for the shows across the UK and Europe, and we have found a way to get tickets right now for as low as £263 each. If you're willing to travel, fans can snag tickets this moment to many other venues.

As well as Liverpool, the 34-year-old is bringing the concert to Edinburgh, , Cardiff and London, as well as in Irish and European venues in Dublin, Amsterdam, Zurich, Milan, Gelsenkirchen, Hamburg, Munich, Warsaw and Vienna.

We have scoured the internet for tickets to some of these venues and the cheapest we’ve found is Gelsenkirchen in Germany , for a reasonable £263 (at the time of writing). Considering tickets for Liverpool ranged from £297 to £784, this isn't a bad deal.

These tickets are available from Viagogo and you can click here to check them out. Plane tickets to Dusseldorf, the nearest airport to Gelsenkirchen , from Manchester during the week of the concert can be bought from £116, according to Skyscanner. You can check them out here .

These are the cheapest tickets currently available on Viagogo for each UK and European venue:

  • Edinburgh, night two, £347, click HERE to get tickets
  • Liverpool, night one, £423, click HERE to get tickets
  • Cardiff, £504, click HERE to get tickets
  • London, night two, £463, click HERE to get tickets
  • Amsterdam, night three, £705, click HERE to get tickets
  • Zurich, night two, £503, click HERE to get tickets
  • Milan, night two, £886, click HERE to get tickets
  • Gelsenkirchen, night three, £385, click HERE to get tickets
  • Hamburg, night one, £393, click HERE to get tickets
  • Munich, night one, £505, click HERE to get tickets
  • Warsaw, night two, £422, click HERE to get tickets
  • Vienna, night one, £619, click HERE to get tickets

These prices were available at the time of writing, and may go up or down at any time. Many of the venues are hosting several nights of the concert, so it is might be worth exploring all the different options to find a seat within your budget. You can do so on Viagogo HERE .

A spokesperson from Viagogo previously said that there are deals to be had - with tickets for one of Taylor Swift's UK dates selling for as low as £172. They told the Express about people's worries over using resale tickets. They said: "The European leg of Taylor Swift's Eras tour has been long anticipated. We've not seen anything like this since The Beatles and with tickets having only just gone on sale, demand is at its peak right now.

“Viagogo is a regulated marketplace where fans have the freedom to buy and sell tickets to their favourite live events, safely and securely, backed by a guarantee. Sellers on our marketplace may list tickets at high values when demand is high, but prices can change and tend to reduce over time.

"We recommend Swifties wait for demand to settle and check regularly for a listing that meets their budget. Tickets for Taylor Swift's UK dates have already sold for as low as £172 on our platform. Also, tickets listed at eye-catchingly high levels rarely, if ever, sell."

Sites such as Viagogo and Vivid Seats allow fans to buy resale tickets from other fans. However, it is important to note that many event promoters say tickets should not be resold after initial purchase and will not be valid for admittance to gigs.

Fans attending live events with tickets acquired through resale websites are advised to double check the ticket terms and conditions at the point of sale - such as Ticketmaster or Live Nation - to ensure a smooth live event experience. Tickets could be voided if they were found to be bought second-hand. As a result, fans are buying at their own risk. With that said, Viagogo also commented: "viagogo is a regulated marketplace where fans have the guarantee."

Wholesale costs for natural gas have hit their highest levels across Europe since December last year - threatening a future spike in energy bills.

The cause is a key Norwegian export operation being shut down due to a cracked pipe.

The damage, discovered aboard the Sleipner Riser platform, prompted wider  energy  infrastructure to be halted including the Nyhamna processing plant which exports gas to the UK, pipeline operator Gassco said.

Alfred Hansen, the company's head of pipeline system operations, told the Reuters news agency: "This has big consequences from a supply perspective."

Yesterday we talked about the dopamine hit you get when shopping - and spoke to a psychologist about how you might learn to control it.

But what if it's gone too far? That's what we're discussing in the second of this four-part series this week.

A  piece by the Royal College of Psychiatrists , published by Cambridge University Press in 2012, said shopping addiction, often referred to as compulsive buying disorder (CBD), "was first described by the German psychiatrist Emil Kraepelin almost a century ago".

He called the disorder "oniomania" (from the Greek onios, meaning "for sale", and mania, meaning "insanity").

A hundred years on, the World Health Organisation doesn't classify shopping addiction as a mental illness, unlike gambling, video game addiction, pyromania and kleptomania - but psychologists are taking note of the subject.

According to a 2021 paper in the Journal of Behavioral Addictions, potential  symptoms  of a compulsive shopping disorder include:

  • Preoccupation with shopping (an irresistible urge to buy a product);
  • Reduced control over buying behaviours;
  • Buying products but not using them for the purposes they were intended to serve;
  • Using shopping to regulate mood;
  • Negative consequences afterwards such as guilt, shame, debt, relationship problems;
  • Negative mood and cognitive symptoms if attempting to stop.

Donald W Black, a prominent American psychiatrist, has written extensively on the subject. He says the "disorder has a lifetime prevalence of 5.8% in the US general population".

There has been much debate about whether CBD is a valid mental illness - amid concerns of over medicalising. However, a growing number of rehab clinics are offering treatment.

The Priory's website says: "If you are addicted to spending money, and are finding that it is affecting your finances, relationships, health and quality of life, this is just as serious as any other addiction."

The Abbey Care Foundation says signs you may have a shopping addiction include juggling multiple credit cards, hiding extravagant spending from your family, hoarding things you don't use and getting angry at anyone who tries to get in the way of your spending.

The foundation even breaks down different types of shopping addict:

  • Bargain-seekers:  These people have a shopping habit of actively seeking items on sale. When they spot items for less than their perceived value, they purchase them. This behaviour makes them feel like they are winning and relieves shopping addiction.
  • Collectors:  This shopping addiction entails seeking out different versions of a particular item. The desire to collect or complete a set of similar items drives this addiction.
  • Show-offs:  The compulsive behaviour is driven by the desire to buy high-value items. In some cases, the individual's self-worth or self-esteem is attached to making such purchases.
  • Trophy-hunters:  The shopping addiction is for rare, expensive items. The individual intentionally looks for the most expensive or rarest items and gains satisfaction in buying them.
  • Shopping bulimics:  This shopping addiction is like the eating disorder known as bulimia nervosa. Individuals categorised as shopping bulimics make large, frequent purchases only to request later refunds. They do so to cushion themselves from the financial consequences of making such large purchases.

Join us tomorrow as we speak to a woman for who this used to be all too real - leading her into £40,000 of debt.

Passengers will soon be able to book British Airways flights in a few clicks as part of a major revamp by the airline.

The company told The Telegraph it wanted to style its website on the "three clicks and you can check out" approach of Amazon.

British Airways said it was spending £7bn on a revamp, which would see the company's app and website relaunched.

Other changes will include new planes, revamped seats and refurbished airport lounges.

Customers will also be able to rebook, claim a refund and cancel flights online.

The new website is currently being trialled by people flying from London Gatwick to Montpellier in France, Antalya in Turkey and Bari, Cagliari and Catania in Italy.

Basically, student finance is a government-financed loan that covers university students' tuition fees and living costs for the duration of their study.

There are two main types of loan, tuition and maintenance - we'll take each in turn.

Tuition fees

Undergraduate courses in England generally cost students about £9,250 a year.

That's a lot for a young person (or their family) to cover, so the government offers to pay that outright, direct to the university, on their behalf.

This is known as your tuition loan - we'll come to how this is repaid later.

Maintenance loans

These help students cover day-to-day costs, such as rent and food, while studying.

For the 2024-25 academic year, students can borrow anywhere between £4,327 and £13,348 for each year of study - depending on where you live, where you're going to study and your family's financial situation.

See how much you could be entitled to by clicking here .

The various plans

Here's where it gets more complicated. What plan you may be on is listed below...

Why no Plan 3? The repayment plan for postgraduate loans in England and Wales is actually Plan 3.

In the UK, you pay nothing up front, and the amount you pay back each month is determined by how much you earn.

You'll repay a percentage of your income over the threshold for your type of loan, depending on how often you get paid - see the table below for the thresholds.

With those thresholds in mind, you'll repay either:

  • 9% of your income over the threshold if you're on Plan 1, 2, 4 or 5
  • 6% of your income over the threshold if you're on a postgraduate loan (Plan 3)

If you're on multiple plans, the rules are slightly different.

If you don't have a postgraduate loan, you'll repay 9% of your income over the lowest threshold out of the plan types you have.

In this scenario, you'll only have a single repayment taken each time you get paid, even if you're on more than one plan type.

But if you do have a postgraduate loan, you'll repay 6% of your income over the postgraduate loan threshold  and 9% of your income over the lowest threshold for any other plan types you have.

You don't need to worry about paying it off each month yourself if you're employed - the money will be deducted from your earnings before it hits your account, like income tax.

Interest rates

Like any loan, you'll be paying back what you owe plus a little bit on the top - known as interest.

With student loans, that extra on the top isn't so little right now, as it is linked to retail price rises.

  • 6.25% if you're on Plan 1
  • 7.8% if you're on Plan 2
  • 6.25% if you're on Plan 4
  • 7.8% if you're on Plan 5
  • 7.8% if you're on a postgraduate loan plan (Plan 3)

Royal Mail's incoming owner has refused to rule out stamp price hikes under his leadership.

In fact, Czech billionaire Daniel Kretinsky seemed to suggest there might be more increases to come.

"I can't make unconditional commitments," he told The Times when questioned on the topic.

"[If] your circulation is 50% of what it was … you either need to go home, or you need to increase the unit price and hope that people will pay for it. Because if not, you are making losses.

"You can be loss-making for a year or two, but you can't be in a loss for 20 years. It's simple maths. There's no mystery to it."

First class stamp prices have more than doubled since 2018 from 67p to £1.35.

The businessman, nicknamed the Czech Sphinx, had his £3.6bn offer accepted by the postal service's parent company, International Distribution Services, last week.

It said the agreement included a series of "contractual commitments" to protect public service aspects of the Royal Mail - such as its universal service obligation to "one-price-goes-anywhere" first-class post six days a week.

Many were shocked by the deal, with Royal Mail reporting losses of £1m a day in recent years.

A major error that meant 500,000 families did not receive their scheduled child benefit today has been "fixed", HMRC has said.

In a post on X, HMRC said affected families would get the money on Wednesday morning, two days after the payments were due...

Multiple readers have got in touch to say they had been affected by the problem, which meant almost a third of payments scheduled for today were not made.

Reader Susan1984 said: "When should we expect to receive the missing payment? This has left not just me but so many more families with kids completely stuck for food and fuel this morning."

Earlier, HMRC apologised and said it was working urgently to resolve the issue, which would not affected payments scheduled for tomorrow (see post at 14.41).

Child benefit is usually paid every four weeks on a Monday or a Tuesday at a rate of £25.60 for an eldest or only child and £16.95 for each additional child.

The bank has today announced wholesale rate hikes across its residential and buy-to-let mortgage product ranges.

The new rates, which come into effect tomorrow, will be applied largely across its two, three and five-year fixed rates for purchase and remortgage.

However, a number of rates available to existing HSBC customers looking to switch will also see increases.

Brokers say more lenders could increase rates this week.

This is thanks to an uptick in swap rates due to hopes fading for a cut to the base rate set by the Bank of England in June.

Here is what some industry insiders told Newspage...

The dreaded 'higher for longer' scenario is no longer a mere notion: it's the harsh reality for many. It looks like these elevated rates are here to stay for the foreseeable future. Ranald Mitchell, director at Charwin Private Clients
We can now expect more awkward conversations with clients who have read that rates are coming down and inflation is under control. HSBC have been fairly competitive recently so the hope is that they just need to turn the tap off a little to catch up and this isn't an upward trend that will continue into the summer period. David Stirling, independent financial advisor at Mint Mortgages and Protection
HSBC is one of several lenders to already have announced changes this week. Even with the higher rates on offer, I would not suggest waiting in the hope of a drop any time soon. My advice to borrowers is take control of the situation and start the process of arranging a new deal as early as possible, secure a rate and, if a better one materialises, change to it. Simon Bridgland, broker/director at Release Freedom

Child benefit payments have not arrived on time for approximately half a million people.

Almost a third of payments scheduled for today were not made - and we've had multiple readers get in touch to say they've been impacted.

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has apologised and said it is working urgently to resolve the issue.

"We're sorry that some customers' child benefit payments have not arrived as scheduled and we are working urgently to resolve the issue," said an HMRC spokesperson.

"The issues that caused payment problems today will not impact payments scheduled for tomorrow."

Child benefit is usually paid every four weeks on a Monday or a Tuesday at a rate of £25.60 for an eldest or only child and £16.95 per additional child.

Some people may receive the benefit weekly, for example if they are a single parent or receiving certain other benefits, such as universal credit.

HMRC added on X that there was "no need for customers to call us" and it will provide updates on the social media platform.

As of August 2023, 6.91 million families were in receipt of child benefit payments.

Reader Sam E said: "No warning, complete denial, no update, just endless worry for those who rely on the benefit. The denial in particular is an insult. How long will it be until it's sorted?"

Last week, the Scottish Parliament passed a bill meaning local authorities can set an additional charge for overnight accommodation.

For tourists heading to Scotland, that means an extra fee for staying hotels, bed and breakfasts and holiday lets.

According to Visitor Levy (Scotland) Bill, the fee will be a percentage of the cost of a hotel or other room.

For instance, a 1% levy on a £200 booking means a visitor would pay £2 in tourist tax.

We asked our followers in LinkedIn if the tourist tax would put them off visiting the country.

The majority of them (59%) said it wouldn't stop them from taking a trip there - but 41% would think twice.

Any charges or levies are not expected to come into effect until spring 2026, as councils need to consult local businesses before carrying out an 18-month implementation period.

Those receiving disability benefits will not pay any charges, with children and young people also exempt.

Manchester, Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole already charge people to stay the night.

Manchester's £1-a-night City Visitor Charge was introduced last April, and is estimated to have raised around £2.8m in its first year.

European hotspots like Barcelona and Venice also have tourist taxes, with the Spanish city charging visitors €3.25 if they're staying in official accommodation.

Your comments on LinkedIn :

"We love Scotland (I'm a Scot) but live close enough to drive up and do some shopping and stay over for a meal etc and we do so perhaps every six weeks or so. So I'm now classed as a 'tourist' even though I spend about £200 on a room - perhaps another £200 quid on a meal and drinks etc etc - not to mention the money we spend in the shops. And they want to charge us both £2.50 a night?" Paul Mclean
Many countries apply tourist taxes, so why should Scotland be any different? The big questions, for me, are how will the money be spent? Will it be spent directly benefiting the city or just vanish into government coffers? The other is who counts as a tourist. A foreign national visiting from a country outside of the UK would seem a sensible definition, but to charge domestic visitors would probably be shootings themselves in the foot somewhat. Scott Taylor-Barr
From my experience, Edinburgh is already one of the most expensive cities to visit. Greig Cahill
Hopefully the contributions are put towards the development of tourism, and/or will be used in the right ways. From my experience working in France, French nationals are very accepting of the tourist tax and in France, I see the logic in it. Let's hope it works... 🤞🏻 Jennifer Wightman

Virgin Atlantic has launched the first flight of its new service from Manchester to Las Vegas today.

It makes Manchester Airport the only place outside of London to offer direct flights to America's west coast.

Virgin Atlantic already has a daily connection to Sin City from London Heathrow, but launched the new route to support strong customer demand in the North West.

It marks the airline's fourth service from Manchester to the US, building on established services of Orlando, New York and Atlanta.

"Few places sum up the glitz and glamour of international travel like Las Vegas. Giving passengers in the North the opportunity to fly there directly and experience everything it has to offer is a real game-changer," Chris Woodroofe, managing director at Manchester Airport said.

The launch has been marked with showgirls joining the flight's cabin crew and welcoming flyers at the check-in desk.

Flight VS85 on an A350-1000 departed Manchester Airport at 9.50am.
