They are a horrible company and with horrible customer service. They talk down to you and even when their website is wrong and they book your room different than what you picked online, they refuse to help you fix it. They threaten you with nonrefundable and if the hotel wants them to call and cancel they will not. They ask for a written letter from the hotel. Really the worst travel site around. You think you are saving money and you truly are not, you are not getting what you think you paid for and then they have the nerve to ask for a huge tip because they tried to help save you money.

Both motels were okay with changing the reservation that was wrong we made in Arizona to putting the reservation to the motel in Lewiston Idaho but these idiots wouldn't help and switch it kept my $75 and I didn't get a room when I asked to speak to the supervisor or higher up manager they refused and hung up on

Great way to earn a little cash.

It is an easy way to make a little extra money. I don't like when I answer a lot of questions then get disqualified and receive nothing at all though.

Listen, y'all this company is the plug frfr. Babe, they prices are the lowest. When I 1st used them it was a last minute situation. They price was unavailable for a hotel I go to. Mind you the hotel normal rate is $170 plus a night other website. This company has it for $69.00 a night we thought is was some kind of scam website that search engine gave us. So we went inside the hotel that we was trying to book and ask the clerk's at the counter have they heard of this company and do ppl book rooms here from them. They said yes alot and I was like say no. We booked the room and it's been a rap ever since. Matter of fact I just used them again for my past trip two days ago also

Pretty smooth transaction

Pretty smooth transaction. First time using Super.com and was very pleased. Gave 4 stars instead of 5 because the paperwork said no additional fees should be expected. Problem is, in Cozumel, Mexico they have this collection of $15 a day for protection of the environment yada-yada BS and if you don’t pay it, you are SOL in getting a room there even though it was prepaid. I pushed back some but the fact is, if you don’t pay the fee, there’s no way you’re getting the hotel room. Also, I paid for double beds and the schmuck at the front desk (Omar) said he was giving us a king bed. So had to show him the paperwork saying it was unacceptable and at least won that argument. Booking was great with Super.com but Cozumel Mexico has their own rules and the booking companies need to have this explained to them and pass along that information to the clients.

Parking lot is very well lit

Parking lot is very well lit. Food restaurants are within walking distance of the hotel. Staff were very friendly. Bed was comfortable but bring your own pillows because they are not like yours at home. Room was very clean. I have no complaints. I will definitely stay here the next time I need a affordable hotel.

Turn and run now!

When you first open the app it doesn’t say a thing about any charges or membership fees until you see something that catches your eye for example it says you can get $250 click on it and it asks for your credit card number so that they can add the money to your account. But you never get any money but you get charged $15 a month this is a scam people are not getting what they want even if they do pay the $15 a month

Fraudulent activity

Never used their site to my knowledge. All of a sudden I started getting charged on my cc. Looked at online history, emails, etc to see if I ever went to their site or got an email saying I subscribed to something…nothing. Don’t know why they’re charging $15 a month but I can tell you it’s a scam. We are very security conscious and would have never been on a website like this nor would we sign up for a travel subscription, especially after seeing the reviews posted here. And yes, before I purchase or do anything on an unknown site, I check trust pilot.

Terrible Experience - Misleading and Confusing Booking System

No, it's not correct. Super.com offers 3 different rooms with 3 different prices and names. Just like on the hotel website, I booked the standard room, which was 10€ more expensive per night than the nano room. After booking, I confirmed with an agent that it was indeed the standard room and not the nano. But at check-in ot the nano room!!!! I don't understand how this happened. The standard room is more expensive and different from the nano room. I confirmed 10 minutes after booking with your agent that it was the standard room, which, according to your website, is the bigger room, not the nano. If it wasn’t the standard room, I would have canceled my reservation. I anticipated this situation and took steps to avoid it, yet it still happened. After an hour of back-and-forth, they didn't care. Completely unacceptable and misleading. Avoid Super.com at all costs. I will not be using Super.com again.

I tried to cancel with my phone number with which I did the booking, however, it didn't work. I will NEVER book any other reservation thru Super Travel….even thou you pay the $17.00 for the 100% refund, the terms and conditions make it nearly impossible to get your refund. What you see on their website is *not* what you get. The only reason they’re still operating in my opinion is lack of consumer protections. *I* could create a website that takes people’s money and doesn’t promise an actual reservation or service. Everything your are describing Is correct accept that they resell wholesale bookings made by companies like Expedia. They purchase these at a discount and resell them. Don’t ever book through Super Travel. I booked a room and had roaches crawling on me, but Super Travel is not willing to communicate with the hotel when the hotel is willing to refund my money. I’m taking both to small claims court.

My hotel was taken over by the Governor of New York for asylum seekers and my reservation was canceled. Supertravel never notified me of this and I only found out the day of the reservation because I called the hotel to inquire about something before I left my house (the hotel told me that all guests and third parties were issued refunds). I tried calling Supertravel and couldn’t get a live person. I was forced to file a dispute with my credit card company in order to get a refund.

I will never use supertravel I booked a hotel online when I showed up it was a house renting a room I was so uncomfortable and it was creepy I left and they refuse to refund my money !!!

But there’s a conspiracy at hotels against Super travel, The deals are too good, and hotels have told me they’re not making money with super travel, so they refuse to take bookings sent through super travel, so you have to call to make sure your booking is being placed or that the hotel will take super travel bookings, Choice hotels is one conglomerate that is starting to refuse to take super travel bookings. It’s just too good, These hotels at choice conglomerates want no less than eighty dollars per night. Now if you find a separate hotel And you can confirm that it takes super travel take the deal. But make sure you keep your reservations. And hotels are starting to have the same price point as your expedia’s, hot wires, priceline, Hotels are not giving away deals. They’re trying to eliminate their party purchasing and many of them are not accepting multitudes of third parties, not just super travel.

No doubt this company is a scam. I made a reservation in Valcouver using SUPERTRAVEL. They charged my credit card the full amount and when I ariived at the hotel there was no reservation at all. And they do not refund me. And also they do not answer my emails. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!!!

Well I booked a room with them two days ago they gave me a confirmation number I called the hotel and they said no they don’t have anything and that all those travel places only takes 2 hours and I told the hotel it’s been 2 days and then when I called the travel agency they said that I had the wrong confirmation number which was printed out and told me they would give me another one which they never gave me and then told me that they would have to get it and either email me or call me with it they couldn’t give it to me right then and there, so I will call the hotel again tomorrow and check

They are a scam. They said they cover room and fees. The HOTEL also CHARGED the fees. They give you a low price that they make up and then they add non existent fees. THEY ARE A SCAM

I feel this company in his scam! Experience the worst from this company, during my reservation trying to Find a hotel stay with reasonable prices. Never once did I see there was be a fee of a deposit. Only aware that there will be a resort fee which was only $17.00 Once I arrived at my chosen hotel I was told that I would have to pay a $125 deposit as well. After explaining that I was totally unaware I was guaranteed a refund from the hotel as long as the travel agency would make a call to the hotel.To confirm. For months now I am contacting Super to transfer back my credit (I received because they cancelled 3!! bookings). No chance. The support chat team pretends to do something but in the end nothing happens ever. Probably it’s a fraud – tactic of them, just keeping the money.

As the hotel is booked, They take the money from credit card and they don’t pay the hotel. So, the hotel charges because they have not been paid. ( that’s what hotel told me). Basically, it’s a double charge. stay away from this company. book from a reputable website. Their low prices are just to attract customers and do the same trick to their customers. Super Travel is not a legitimate business. You cannot trust that your reservations will actually be made (mine were not, although I had confirmation documents) or that they will assist you at all in refunding your money or finding other accommodations for you as a result of their errors. I was literally stranded at night in Mexico on my own. I strongly recommend NOT ever using this service.

Super Travel overbooked a hire that was full. The employees said they told all third party booking sites they were full for the weekend and they had several people show up, including me, even though they did not have any rooms available since early in the day (May 27, 2023). Trying to get a live human and a refund is a painstakingly slow process.

Super Travel is total crap. Their cancellation policy requires you to cancel days in advance. They give you credits if you book on their app, which is not functional, and then you waste time trying to claim credits because none of the hotels actually apply to the credits. A total waste of time and money.

Please take my advice and DO NOT USE SUPERTRAVEL!! I have to travel with my daughter because she has brain surgery and Supertravel charges for 2 rooms and does not refund you! They are a Gimmick!!

I was excited to find this price for a 3 night stay. Unfortunately, my daughter is in the hospital and not doing well. I cannot even call the hotel to cancel my reservation, although I know I will lose my money.

I have used Super travel since the beginning of the Pandemic and book hotels through them at least 3-4 times per month. I’ve had a couple of problems with bookings which caused problem when i tried to check in and they were resolved. They has earned the right to not 100%. Booking is easy and reliable and their pricing beats other sources 98% of the time for quality properties. And what you see on the site is what you get. The pricing can increase as the day moves forward but they remain a good deal. If you sign up you receive $ credit that you can apply on your next booking. There is an issue between syncing between my desktop and cell phone versions. but not an interfering issue. I am affiliated with only myself and I give my experience with them a 98.5% approval rating. I had to give them this shout out when i read the blog. T hey give me flexibility and choice in managing my hotel needs. Thank you !

Also some of the hotels advertised on super travel have not given their authorisation to have their rooms sold on that platform

Whether you’ve traveled the world over, or are planning your first adventure, I know that something all travelers love is a deal. Finding those deals and promotions when you’re booking flights or hotels can be tiresome, and hard to locate sometimes.

The reason is primarily due to the overwhelming amount of options in travel deal sites like Priceline or Scott's Cheap Flights that are directly competing with each other to provide travelers with the best deals. After all, it's only normal you'll want the best of the best travel deals, right?

That’s where SnapTravel comes in handy. Not heard of them before? Perhaps you've seen their online reviews and you're wondering... should I really trust them?

I've looked into the reviews and research so you don't have to. Here's the facts about SuperTravel, previously known as SnapTravel.

Founded in 2016, Snaptravel is a Canadian startup that aims to get customers the best prices on hotels and flights using AI. In August 2020, according to GlobeTrender, they had helped book more than 350,000 nights in over 150 countries.

SnapTravel describes itself as a “travel agent over messaging.” Their services offer a platform of accommodation booking services, namely Snaptravel hotels or Snaptravel Flights, that aims to bring the latest cheap travel deals to its customers. They offer you promotions and great rates via 1:1 private chat through SMS, WhatsApp, or Messenger.

You send them a message with your city and date preferences, and you’ll get a reply with SnapTravel's tailored travel deals, which you can then easily take advantage of with a few clicks.

SuperTravel - SnapTravel Rebranded

SnapTravel is currently undergoing the process of rebranding to SuperTravel . While the logo and name has changed, the company promises that all the travel deals, credits, and points will stay the same.

I'll continue to refer to SuperTravel as SnapTravel until the rebranding is complete as to not confuse you!

A suspected reason for the rebranding is to reduce the amount of negative reviews SnapTravel currently has online, which I'll also cover extensively below!

How Do You Use Snaptravel?

So how does Snaptravel work, exactly? It's pretty straightforward.

If you scroll down to the bottom of Snaptravel's webpage, you can browse hotel deals by city or destination.

This allows you to see what’s available before you begin messaging with SnapTravel to scope out prices and locations. You cannot book online, though, as you have to go through SMS or Facebook Messenger to access SnapTravel’s deals.

Looking for VIP upgrades? SnapTravel can also help tune up the quality of your stay to make your trip extra special.

SnapTravel operates in a similar fashion to the one-to-one relationship you might have with a travel agent, but they use AI to act as the agent. Their booking engine uses industry connections and relationships to search for private contract rates, bulk fares, and consolidator inventory that aren’t typically available to the public.

If you're on Fb Messenger, you can also use SnapTravel to look for deals the same way you can chat with your friends online!

This means that customers are getting not only the best rates but ones they might not find anywhere else.

SnapTravel describes itself as being “half-bot, half-human.” This means that while many of your inquiries will be handled by a bot, you can still speak with a human agent if need be.

The ease of using an AI service means that you will get quick and efficient service to help you find the best rates for your travel adventures.

So... What does SnapTravel's official cancellation and refund policy say?

SnapTravel is not responsible for any problems in the event of “delay, cancellation, overbooking, strike, force majeure or other causes beyond our [SnapTravel] direct control.” In those situations, no refund will be issued.

From the reviews, I would book deals with Snaptravel only if they've got significantly great deals, at the risk of miscommunication and subpar customer support response rate.

I really like using my super card knowing that it is helping my credit score. I really like the surveys and how easy it is to redeem rewards. I really like how easy it is to add money to my super card. I recommend the super card to anyone needing to improve their credit score as the card could be your first credit card if you are denied and don't want to get a regular secured credit card.

Great way to earn a little cash.

It is an easy way to make a little extra money. I don't like when I answer a lot of questions then get disqualified and receive nothing at all though.

Listen, y'all this company is the plug frfr. Babe, they prices are the lowest. When I 1st used them it was a last minute situation. They price was unavailable for a hotel I go to. Mind you the hotel normal rate is $170 plus a night other website. This company has it for $69.00 a night we thought is was some kind of scam website that search engine gave us. So we went inside the hotel that we was trying to book and ask the clerk's at the counter have they heard of this company and do ppl book rooms here from them. They said yes alot and I was like say no. We booked the room and it's been a rap ever since. Matter of fact I just used them again for my past trip two days ago also

Pretty smooth transaction

Pretty smooth transaction. First time using Super.com and was very pleased. Gave 4 stars instead of 5 because the paperwork said no additional fees should be expected. Problem is, in Cozumel, Mexico they have this collection of $15 a day for protection of the environment yada-yada BS and if you don’t pay it, you are SOL in getting a room there even though it was prepaid. I pushed back some but the fact is, if you don’t pay the fee, there’s no way you’re getting the hotel room. Also, I paid for double beds and the schmuck at the front desk (Omar) said he was giving us a king bed. So had to show him the paperwork saying it was unacceptable and at least won that argument. Booking was great with Super.com but Cozumel Mexico has their own rules and the booking companies need to have this explained to them and pass along that information to the clients.

Parking lot is very well lit

Parking lot is very well lit. Food restaurants are within walking distance of the hotel. Staff were very friendly. Bed was comfortable but bring your own pillows because they are not like yours at home. Room was very clean. I have no complaints. I will definitely stay here the next time I need a affordable hotel.

Turn and run now!

When you first open the app it doesn’t say a thing about any charges or membership fees until you see something that catches your eye for example it says you can get $250 click on it and it asks for your credit card number so that they can add the money to your account. But you never get any money but you get charged $15 a month this is a scam people are not getting what they want even if they do pay the $15 a month

Fraudulent activity

Never used their site to my knowledge. All of a sudden I started getting charged on my cc. Looked at online history, emails, etc to see if I ever went to their site or got an email saying I subscribed to something…nothing. Don’t know why they’re charging $15 a month but I can tell you it’s a scam. We are very security conscious and would have never been on a website like this nor would we sign up for a travel subscription, especially after seeing the reviews posted here. And yes, before I purchase or do anything on an unknown site, I check trust pilot.

Terrible Experience - Misleading and Confusing Booking System

No, it's not correct. Super.com offers 3 different rooms with 3 different prices and names. Just like on the hotel website, I booked the standard room, which was 10€ more expensive per night than the nano room. After booking, I confirmed with an agent that it was indeed the standard room and not the nano. But at check-in ot the nano room!!!! I don't understand how this happened. The standard room is more expensive and different from the nano room. I confirmed 10 minutes after booking with your agent that it was the standard room, which, according to your website, is the bigger room, not the nano. If it wasn’t the standard room, I would have canceled my reservation. I anticipated this situation and took steps to avoid it, yet it still happened. After an hour of back-and-forth, they didn't care. Completely unacceptable and misleading. Avoid Super.com at all costs. I will not be using Super.com again.

Katastrophe mit Service Center

I don't know why 14.99 USD was charged from my bank account for Super+. I have never registered for Super+ and want to cancel it. I tried to cancel with my phone number with which I did the booking, however, it didn't work. I also tried to call service center, during the business hour 8:00 am to 7:00 pm EST, however was told the service center is closed. Also no one responds to online-chat!

Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens in Boothbay is open for the season, daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Maine Days are May 31 to June 2, when anyone with a Maine driver’s license or state ID gets in for free. Ditto for dads/father figures on Father’s Day (June 16). Advance registration is required. With more than 300 acres of gardens and natural spaces, including a waterfall, there will be plenty to see, smell and bask in the scenery.

Here are more things to do in Boothbay

Viles Arboretum is a botanical garden in Augusta with 6 miles of trails and more than 20 botanical collections. It’s open daily from sunrise to sunset, and admission is free. There are 224 acres with all sorts of flora and fauna to discover. Leashed dogs are welcome, and the visitor center is open from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.

Viles Arboretum offers medicinal plant walks, and although the May 18 session is full, you can still register for the June 15 and Sept. 14 events, lead by herbalist, homeopath and flower essence practitioner Debra Bluth. Tickets are $25. Advertisement

The Mount Desert Land & Garden Preserve has four areas to explore on its property in Northeast Harbor: the Asticou Azelea Garden (dawn to dusk daily), the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Garden (noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday from July 9 to Sept. 8, reservations required), Thuya Garden (dawn to dusk daily, June 15 to Oct. 14) and Little Long Pond Natural Lands (hiking trails and carriage roads open dawn to dusk daily). On June 26, at the Wildflowers of Little Long Pond event, participants can wander around the garden’s fields and forest, spotting wildflowers along the way while practicing how to identify them.

Park ranger Liz Collado will lead a sensory awakening and forest bathing session. Along with tree hugging, there will be a storytime, and you can touch a forestry truck and meet naturalist Noah Querido and Portland city arborist Mark Reiland. Just down the road, you’ll find Fessenden Park, on the corner of Brighton and Deering Avenues. The tulips have arrived, and it’s worth a visit to see them.

McLaughlin Garden Lilac Festival 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 24. McLaughlin Garden and Homestead, 97 Main St., South Paris, $5. mclaughlingardens.org You’ll find more than 125 varieties of lilacs at the McLaughlin Garden Lilac Festival. Explore on your own or take a guided tour led by a horticulturist. There will also be family-friendly activities, and you can shop for native and unusual plants.

4th annual Woodfords Community Garden Tour 1-4 p.m. June 8. Woodfords Corner Community in Back Cove, Deering Highlands, Oakdale and Deering Center, $20 suggested donation. woodfordscorner.org Presented by Friends of Woodfords Corner, this self-guided tour features at least 10 gardens. As you make your way down the list, you’ll find yourself pleasantly surprised by all of the hidden havens bursting with flowers, plants and impressive yardscaping elements.

Peony Society of Maine 23rd annual Garden Tour 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 8 and 15. Both tours start at 1348 Ohio St., Bangor, $5 donation. peonysocietyofmaine.net You’ll visit multiple gardens in Bangor, Winterport, Ripley and St. Albans, and your senses will be filled with countless peonies. Hidden Gardens of Historic Bath 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 22. Sagadahoc Preservation Inc., 880 Washington St., Bath, $40. sagadahocpreservation.org The Hidden Gardens of Historic Bath house and garden tour features several homes in North Bath. Every stop on the tour will be a treat for your senses and may motivate you to make some of your own magic when you get back home.

Garden Conservancy Open Garden Days 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 29. Beckett Castle Rose Garden, Singles Road, Cape Elizabeth, $10. gardenconservancy.org You’ll see plenty of roses as well as ocean views at Beckett Castle, which sits right on the water, with views of five lighthouses. The castle was built in 1871, and its rose garden features more than 70 varieties of heirloom roses. A 50-foot stone tower doubles as the rose arbor entrance to the castle.

Tate House Museum’s Annual Plant and Herb Sale 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 18. Tate House Museum, 1267 Westbrook St., Portland, 207-774-6177.  tatehouse.org The wide selection includes perennials divided from the museum’s 18th century reproduction garden. Visitors can also make their own “seed bombs” and get a sneak peak at a new installation by artist Ashley Page from 10 a.m. to noon.

No free breakfast

The price was good. But, I paid more for “free breakfast”, which the hotel hasn’t offered for 15 years. Be careful when you book to cross reference with the hotel website what Super.com claims to offer.

Beds are comfortable and the showers have great pressure….love that! We ate at the restaurant in the hotel and the food was excellent. Recommend the brisket street tacos. Bar server was on top of her game! All of the staff were extremely friendly & helpful. It is a business that still trains on customer service which is a rarity these days. Hotel could use a bit of an update and new carpet throughout the hallways but all in all would stay there again. Thank you for the great service!

Beware of their "Cancellation" policy

My wife and I have a booking at a hotel in Lille for 4 nights. We need to leave a day early, unexpectedly, because of a funeral. We're far enough away from the booking dates to be able to cancel the booking for free - apparently. However all is not what it seems. When I contacted them to ask them to cancel the last day of our stay, they refused saying they couldn't do it: we have to cancel the whole stay and rebook it for the shorter duration. There's nothing currently showing available at the hotel for the first night of our stay, so by cancelling and trying to re-book, we'd jeopardise our entire stay. Also the rates have gone up considerably so it's cheaper for us to just abandon the last day. If they would cancel just the last day, it would free it up for another guest and it would not leave the hotel empty-handed if we cancel the whole thing. Talking with them via their chat window is like some kind of cut-and-paste torture session. They pass you from one to another adviser who parrots the same thing the previous one said. I'm giving super.com 2 stars because they are cheap, but also just 2 stars because they are cheap in the other sense. Reply to Super.com's feedback: booking reference B_11318195: thanks

Flawless Experience

I paid for an 8 night stay through Super.com for a hotel that I had previously stayed in. It was so much cheaper this time booking through Super.com that I even wondered if it was a scam so I contacted the hotel directly and they instantly confirmed my booking was legitimate. All I had to do was print off my holiday voucher and hand it in to the hotel reception on arrival and I received the exact same service and standard of room that I received when I booked directly through the hotel. Using Super.com is a no brainer as they were efficient with great communication and saved me a bundle of money. What's not to like???

DISGUSTING company

DISGUSTING company. They charge $15/month to transfer you countless times to people who provide copy and pasted answers and they also steal money from customers. I have $75 of credits sitting in my super.com account that I cannot transfer to my bank account because I supposedly do not qualify for a “Super Pay Card”. Why Is Car Insurance So Expensive?

Soaring premiums have become a prominent driver of inflation, and insurers say that more increases could be on the way. How did it get like this?

If your car broke down two years ago, it probably became a bigger problem than you bargained for.

A confluence of forces were to blame: The Covid pandemic disrupted supply chains, pushing used car prices to record highs and making spare parts hard to get; out-of-practice drivers emerging from lockdowns caused more severe wrecks; and technological advancements like motion sensors made even the simplest parts, like a fender or a rim, expensive to replace .

Things have since improved for car owners — except when it comes to insurance bills. Car insurers are still raising prices steeply: The price of motor vehicle insurance rose more than 22 percent in the year through April, the fastest pace since the 1970s, according to a report the Bureau of Labor Statistics on Wednesday. According to calculations by the Insurance Information Institute, a trade group, the average 12-month premium for car insurance was $1,280 in 2023, the industry’s most recent figures.

That has made car insurance a prominent factor preventing overall inflation from cooling more quickly, which could force the Federal Reserve to keep interest rates higher for longer even as the prices for many other essential goods and services have slowed.

Geico recently reported a big jump in quarterly profit on higher premiums and lower customer claims. The share prices of other big auto insurers, like Allstate and Progressive, have beaten the rise in the overall market this year.

That has attracted scrutiny from economists . A key reason car insurance costs are rising so fast right now has to do with how the industry is regulated.

How does insurance regulation work?

Insurers are regulated by the states, not the federal government. In all 50 states, insurance companies must follow specific rules about how and when they can raise the price on their policies.

Each state’s laws are broadly similar, and require insurers to ask regulators for permission to raise prices. Insurers have to make a case — with data to back it up — that the increase is necessary and that they will not make too large a profit on the re-priced policies. This application, known in the business as a “rate filing,” involves complicated paperwork that may take weeks or months to resolve.

The data has to include an analysis of loss trends from the past couple of years, as well as projections for replacement costs and profits. If insurers are deemed to profit too heavily, regulators can make them return money to customers.

The threat of returning money is not an idle one. At the height of pandemic lockdowns in 2020, when many cars sat idle, insurers returned almost $13 billion to customers through dividends, refund checks and premium reductions for policy renewals, according to the insurance ratings agency AM Best.

California was one of the most active states: Insurers there returned $3.2 billion to customers in 2020.

Ricardo Lara, the state’s insurance commissioner, “directed the department to do a very close analysis to make sure that drivers weren’t overcharged,” said Michael Soller, a spokesman for the California Department of Insurance. But starting in late 2021, the state became the poster child for a new problem: an epic backlog of insurers’ requests to raise prices.

When the pandemic shut down most economic activity, it messed up insurers’ ability to use the past to predict the future. For months, they were frozen. They did not submit new rate filings to regulators for a spell — until they did, all at once, in the second half of 2021.

The prices of cars and parts were jumping and drivers were back on the roads and crashing left and right after a hiatus behind the wheel.

“You went from this period of incredible profitability to incredible losses in the blink of an eye,” said Tim Zawacki, an analyst who focuses on insurance at S&P Global Market Intelligence. No companies were willing to stick their necks out by offering lower premiums in the hope of winning new business, he said.

“Everyone was together in significantly pushing for rate increases.”

In California, the most populous U.S. state, insurers were getting creamed by expensive claims.

But the state’s regulator did not start approving insurers’ requests to raise rates until near the end of 2022. The backlog grew so large that the average wait time for approvals was longer — by several months — than the six-month policies that insurers wanted to sell.

“When state regulators delay or prevent companies from accurately pricing insurance, insurers may not be able to absorb the costs,” said Neil Alldredge, the president of the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies, a trade group that represents many home and auto insurers. The squeeze can lead insurers to leave some states or stop some business lines, he added. “Inefficient regulatory environments in states like California, New Jersey and New York, combined with inflation and increased catastrophic losses, have left consumers with fewer choices of insurers and higher costs,” he said.

California is still the slowest state in the continental United States for auto insurance rate filings, taking an average of 219 days to approve a price proposal for a personal auto policy, according to S&P data provided by Mr. Zawacki.

“We fight for consumers by analyzing all of the data, not just what insurance companies spoon-feed us,” Mr. Soller, the California Department of Insurance spokesman, said.

The S&P analysis showed that New Jersey, the 11th-most populous state, had the sixth-longest wait time, while New York, with the fourth-largest population, had the 7th-longest wait times.

“The department performs a comprehensive review of requests to amend rates or rating systems to ensure compliance with New Jersey law,” said Dawn Thomas, a spokeswoman for the New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance.

Ms. Thomas said the regulator needed to ensure that each proposed premium increase was “reasonable, adequate, and not unfairly discriminatory,” and that sometimes the insurers’ requests needed to be challenged or denied.

A spokeswoman for New York’s regulator declined to comment.

When will the jam clear?

Shortly before the pandemic, the umbrella organization for state insurance regulators, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, formed a team of data scientists to help regulators deal with their rate filings, which has gotten more complicated in recent years.

The data team became fully operational in 2021 and its mission is now to help speed up the review process: 37 states have signed up to use it.

This month, during a call with analysts to discuss Allstate’s earnings, company representatives said they had recently reopened their California auto insurance business after getting permission to charge higher rates. The company still wanted to raise prices in other states.

In New York and New Jersey, for example, “even with the rate approvals that we got late last year, we still don’t feel like we’re at the appropriate rate level to want to grow in those two states,” said Mario Rizzo, the president of Allstate’s property-casualty business.

How much higher will premiums go?

In 2021, insurers’ personal auto businesses started recording losses. According to David Blades, an analyst for AM Best, the industry lost $4 billion in 2021, $33 billion in 2022 and roughly $17 billion last year.

According to Dale Porfilio, the chief insurance officer at the Insurance Information Institute, the trade group, many companies still need to raise prices to make up for those bad years.

Last year, insurers raised auto premiums by 14 percent, the biggest increase in over 15 years. Mr. Porfilio’s best guess is that premiums this year will rise another 13 percent.

“It’s going to take time for every company to get their rates to where they want to be,” he said.

Great way to earn a little cash.

It is an easy way to make a little extra money. I don't like when I answer a lot of questions then get disqualified and receive nothing at all though.

Listen, y'all this company is the plug frfr. Babe, they prices are the lowest. When I 1st used them it was a last minute situation. They price was unavailable for a hotel I go to. Mind you the hotel normal rate is $170 plus a night other website. This company has it for $69.00 a night we thought is was some kind of scam website that search engine gave us. So we went inside the hotel that we was trying to book and ask the clerk's at the counter have they heard of this company and do ppl book rooms here from them. They said yes alot and I was like say no. We booked the room and it's been a rap ever since. Matter of fact I just used them again for my past trip two days ago also

Pretty smooth transaction

Pretty smooth transaction. First time using Super.com and was very pleased. Gave 4 stars instead of 5 because the paperwork said no additional fees should be expected. Problem is, in Cozumel, Mexico they have this collection of $15 a day for protection of the environment yada-yada BS and if you don’t pay it, you are SOL in getting a room there even though it was prepaid. I pushed back some but the fact is, if you don’t pay the fee, there’s no way you’re getting the hotel room. Also, I paid for double beds and the schmuck at the front desk (Omar) said he was giving us a king bed. So had to show him the paperwork saying it was unacceptable and at least won that argument. Booking was great with Super.com but Cozumel Mexico has their own rules and the booking companies need to have this explained to them and pass along that information to the clients.

Parking lot is very well lit

Parking lot is very well lit. Food restaurants are within walking distance of the hotel. Staff were very friendly. Bed was comfortable but bring your own pillows because they are not like yours at home. Room was very clean. I have no complaints. I will definitely stay here the next time I need a affordable hotel.

Turn and run now!

When you first open the app it doesn’t say a thing about any charges or membership fees until you see something that catches your eye for example it says you can get $250 click on it and it asks for your credit card number so that they can add the money to your account. But you never get any money but you get charged $15 a month this is a scam people are not getting what they want even if they do pay the $15 a month

Fraudulent activity

Never used their site to my knowledge. All of a sudden I started getting charged on my cc. Looked at online history, emails, etc to see if I ever went to their site or got an email saying I subscribed to something…nothing. Don’t know why they’re charging $15 a month but I can tell you it’s a scam. We are very security conscious and would have never been on a website like this nor would we sign up for a travel subscription, especially after seeing the reviews posted here. And yes, before I purchase or do anything on an unknown site, I check trust pilot.

Terrible Experience - Misleading and Confusing Booking System

No, it's not correct. Super.com offers 3 different rooms with 3 different prices and names. Just like on the hotel website, I booked the standard room, which was 10€ more expensive per night than the nano room. After booking, I confirmed with an agent that it was indeed the standard room and not the nano. But at check-in ot the nano room!!!! I don't understand how this happened. The standard room is more expensive and different from the nano room. I confirmed 10 minutes after booking with your agent that it was the standard room, which, according to your website, is the bigger room, not the nano. If it wasn’t the standard room, I would have canceled my reservation. I anticipated this situation and took steps to avoid it, yet it still happened. After an hour of back-and-forth, they didn't care. Completely unacceptable and misleading. Avoid Super.com at all costs. I will not be using Super.com again.

Katastrophe mit Service Center

I don't know why 14.99 USD was charged from my bank account for Super+. I have never registered for Super+ and want to cancel it. I tried to cancel with my phone number with which I did the booking, however, it didn't work. I also tried to call service center, during the business hour 8:00 am to 7:00 pm EST, however was told the service center is closed. Also no one responds to online-chat!

Top Pa. lawmakers received travel, Super Bowl tickets from special interest groups

HARRISBURG — Top Pennsylvania state legislators accepted nearly $30,000 in travel expenses in 2023, often from groups that have interests before the state, newly filed ethics reports show.

That includes trips to political conferences and other events bankrolled by campaign groups, organizations pushing alternatives to public education and more. Several other lawmakers went to Arizona on a trip funded by Kooth, a U.K.-based mental health provider that has a state contract worth millions. While there, two state senators attended the Super Bowl on the dime of a millionaire insurance executive.

Pennsylvania’s gift law is one of the loosest in the U.S. and places few limits on what public officials can accept. They can accept gifts of any size, as long as they report those that meet a certain threshold on ethics filings.

The law does bar lawmakers from taking gifts if doing so will influence their votes and positions. Under  both   chambers’  ethics rules, lawmakers are also barred from accepting cash gifts from a lobbyist or anyone else seeking a specific legislative outcome.

But good-government advocates have long bemoaned that there are few ways to enforce these no-pay-to-play rules, and they generally  amount to self-policing . Other states also have much stricter limits on what lawmakers can accept.

“When you have a pay-to-play setup, when you can’t pay, you don’t get to play,” Michael Pollack, an activist who has pressured the state legislature to ban gifts, told Spotlight PA. “And that’s why so many Pennsylvanians feel used and unheard and hurt by policy violence.”

The primary oversight mechanism in the gift law is public reporting. Public officials must report any gift over $250 in value, or hospitality — including travel, meals and lodging — over $650 on their annual ethics filings.

But there are ways around this requirement. A  2019 legislative report  found that lobbyists regularly spread costs out among clients, which in turn can keep gifts to lawmakers below the reporting threshold.

This loophole is apparently often used. In 2018, legislators and state employees reported accepting $39,200 in gifts and hospitality from lobbyists, the report noted. During the same period, lobbyists and principals reported spending $1.5 million on that purpose.

Some work, some play in Arizona

In 2023, six lawmakers traveled to Arizona to attend a conference held by Kooth, which received a $3 million  contract  from the Department of Human Services to provide online mental health services to school districts.

Four of those lawmakers — state Sens. Ryan Bizzarro (D-Erie), Jimmy Dillon (D-Philadelphia), Marty Flynn (D-Lackawanna), and Chris Gebhard (R-Lebanon) — reported travel expenses paid for by either Kooth or Kooth’s lobbyists, the DT Firm, totaling $8,500.

In a February 2023 press release, Kooth said the lawmakers went to Arizona to “highlight their work” on a panel.

In an email, a company spokesperson said Pennsylvania was one of the first states to fund online student mental health resources, and “legislators who were supportive of the grant funding and were seeing local success in their school districts joined the panel to provide an overview of what PA is doing for youth mental health.”

Both Bizzarro and Gebhard told Spotlight PA that mental health issues are priorities for them as legislators.

“I didn’t really know why they wanted me to go,” Gebhard said. “I think it’s a topic we have to talk about a lot more and deliver services to the people who need it.”

State Reps. Mike Cabell and Aaron Kaufer, both Republicans from Luzerne County, also traveled to Arizona but did not report gifts related to the trip on their ethics filings.

Cabell did not respond to a request for comment, but Kooth said he “paid his own way to learn more.”

Kaufer said he paid Kooth back for his travel costs. He also attended the Super Bowl while in Arizona on his own dime.

“I was a sponsor of the gift ban,” Kaufer told Spotlight PA. “I don’t mind going on these trips, but I’d rather pay my own way.”

Politicians also received Super Bowl tickets as gifts

Dillon and Flynn also attended the Super Bowl while in Arizona, and reported receiving $2,200 from Excalibur Insurance Management Services on their annual ethics filings. The company is owned by Charles Volpe, a Lackawanna County businessman and frequent GOP political donor.

Dillon’s report said the expense was a Super Bowl ticket, while Flynn’s categorized it as “transportation, lodging, and hospitality.” However, he told Spotlight PA the expense was a ticket.

Flynn said he has known Volpe for 30 years and that Volpe is the uncle of “one of my best friends.”

Volpe is also a Philadelphia Eagles season ticket holder through his company, which allowed him to purchase two tickets to the 2023 championship game. Flynn said Volpe wasn’t able to attend and gave him the tickets. Flynn gave the second ticket to Dillon.

Volpe told Spotlight PA he was “a little old to be going to Super Bowls” and had no interest in seeing the Eagles play — “I’m a Raiders fan,” he said. Volpe offered the tickets to Flynn after remembering the lawmaker was going to be in Arizona at the same time.

As for Dillon, Volpe said: “I don’t even know the other guy. That’s Marty's friend.”

Volpe dismissed the idea the gift was an attempt at influence.

“I’m a major donor to the SRCC and HRCC,” he said, referring to the legislative Republican campaign committees, “so I could give two licks less about some senators.”

State law does not require officials to report gifts from family members or friends “when the circumstances make it clear that the motivation for the action was a personal or family relationship.” By that standard, Flynn said he didn’t need to report the tickets because of his “pre-existing relationship” with Volpe.

“But I did anyway, just to make sure that there didn't look like there was anything funny going on,” he said.

Flynn and Volpe, who also runs a nonprofit insurer of governmental bodies, said they never talk about policy. Excalibur is not registered to lobby, according to Department of State records, while Volpe’s nonprofit, the Housing and Redevelopment Insurance Exchange, is.

Travel perks

Spotlight PA examined 31 of the 253 state lawmakers' ethics reports, focusing on those in leadership positions. While some reported no gifts or travel, others accepted thousands of dollars' worth from advocacy groups with agendas to pitch.

Pennsylvania House Speaker Joanna McClinton (D-Philadelphia) reported $4,600 in travel from four groups.

The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee — a national group that funnels  millions of dollars  from unions, corporate trade associations, and other groups into state-level races — spent $2,300 to send McClinton to its “Speaker’s Conference.”

McClinton also accepted trips to the annual meetings of  The NewDEAL , “a selective national network of pro-growth progressive state and local elected officials”; the Pennsylvania Medical Society; and the Pennsylvania Association for Justice, a state interest group representing trial lawyers.

Pennsylvania House Majority Leader Matt Bradford (D-Montgomery) reported accepting a trip worth almost $3,000 from the  State Government Affairs Council , an association of multi-state lobbyists, to their “Leaders Policy Conference.”

The event was held last November at the Ritz-Carlton in Amelia Island near Jacksonville, Florida. The 5-star hotel “stands as an exquisite testament to refined luxury,” according to its  website.  The conference  agenda  included panels on marijuana legalization, retail crime, and “civility in public discourse” as well as a “sunset cruise” and a Sunday afternoon football watch party.

State House Appropriations Committee Chair Jordan Harris (D-Philadelphia) reported accepting two trips worth $5,700. One was from the North Carolina-based  Hunt Institute  for a summit on early childhood education; the other was from the  Justice Action Network , a national criminal justice reform group that asked him to be a guest speaker at a conference, according to his statement.

Groups supporting alternatives to public education were also active in flying lawmakers around the country.

The American Federation for Children provided $3,270 in meals and lodging to state House Minority Leader Bryan Cutler (R-Lancaster) and state Rep. Josh Kail (R-Washington), his caucus’ policy chair, to attend a December conference in San Diego.

The meeting was held to “exchange school choice strategies and solutions that can benefit families,” Cutler said in his disclosure.

State Sen. Ryan Aument (R-Lancaster), his caucus’ whip, accepted travel paid for by a think tank that supports school choice. He reported $2,550 from the Florida-based  Foundation for Excellence in Education  to travel to a November summit in Atlanta.

In an email, Aument’s spokesperson said the conference was not solely focused on school choice. A  foundation web page  shows presentations on artificial intelligence, the impact of smartphone usage on children, and “the complex and troubling challenges facing today’s male students.”

State Rep. Dawn Keefer (R-York), chair of the arch-conservative Freedom Caucus, accepted a trip from another national group backing alternatives to public education, the Indianapolis-based EdChoice. It was the most expensive of four trips she reported.

Keefer also accepted trips from the American Legislative Exchange Council; Young Americans for Liberty, a libertarian-aligned student activist group; and the Club for Growth, a fiscally conservative political group that counts Pennsylvania billionaire Jeff Yass among its top donors. In total, she accepted $8,000 for the four trips.

Not every gift lawmakers accepted in 2023 was policy-related.

State Sen. Vincent Hughes (D-Philadelphia) also attended the 2023 Super Bowl, but his trip wasn’t related to Kooth or Volpe. Hughes is married to actress Sheryl Lee Ralph, who performed “Lift Every Voice and Sing” before kickoff. At the time, Hughes’ spokesperson said that Ralph brought Hughes with her and that the NFL paid for his lodging, transportation, and ticket.

Hughes reported the trip, paid for by the NFL, on his annual statement. He reported $1,000 in travel costs with the ticket as “value unknown.” He also reported accepting three tickets from the Philadelphia 76ers worth $810.

State Senate Majority Leader Joe Pittman (R-Indiana) reported accepting $3,700 in “golf clubs/accessories” from two individuals: Gebhard, a fellow state senator, and Indiana County insurance executive  Joe Reschini.

"Despite the gifts coming from two friends, I felt it was something that should be disclosed to best adhere to ethical conduct laws,” Pittman said in a statement.

Gebhard, who said he played college golf, said the clubs were a Christmas present for Pittman and “the least I could do to pay him back for the nine million questions I’ve asked him over the last three years.”

The clubs, he said, are “just me being a complete golf geek.”
