Sitting in the north east of Lapland and 150km north of the Arctic Circle Yllas is a small unspoilt ski resort and is known for darker nights and more snowfall than the more southern towns. Yllas is in a great location for those hoping to catch a glimpse of the Northern lights, the town even has its own Aurora Borealis nights when the villagers turn off their streetlights for better visibility. This resort also has some great snow sport facilities and some amazing ski slopes. You have 2 small villages here Äkäslompolo and Ylläsjärv each offering a selection of winter cafes and bars. They are just 15 mins apart with a local bus connection. We can take you here on our 3-night Lapland adventure. Journey from Kittila airport 45 mins.

Thinking of booking Lapland for 2 nights and have a choice of Sunway (sleighbell spectacular) or Canterbury (idyllic Lapland) trips from Dublin. Sunway use rovaneimi resort while Canterbury go to phya. Based on what I've seen the Canterbury trip seems to give more time to activities but is in a more remote location ( which may not be a bad thing). I would appreciate any feedback on either operator, location or trip.

' class=

just wondering what package you decided to go for as i am thinking to go this year?

feedback greatful :)

We didn't go last year ......it was all too last minute so booked for this year Instead. We booked with canterbury (via local travel agent) in the end as one of the ladies there was on both trips and much preferred the canterbury trip...., thought it was more remote, authentic etc. To be honest I had decided on canterbury myself so her feedback was just confirmation for me that I was doing the right thing. I'm sure the sunway tour is excellent too but that's what we decided. Really looking forward to it now!!!!

Hi Tina - let us know how you get on. Considering booking. Have a great time

sunway lapland 2 night trip

When your off? We booked Canterbury for 1st Dec. So excited

' class=

How did you find it? Was it worth the money? Doing a bit of research for next year. Don't know whether to do one or two nights!

Another person interested to know how it was as looking to go Dec 2018.

We are currently trying to decide between Phya and Yllas...... 3 night trip with Canterbury travel. We have two kids who will be aged 4 & 7 by Christmas. I would really appreciate any advice.

' class=

I too am trying to arrange a trip to Lapland for December 2018. We have four kids (ranging from 2 y/o to 10 y/o).

I'm in favour of the longer trips as it's such an ordeal getting too and from anywhere with the kids I'd rather go for that bit longer.

@emilystackwhite you mention that you are trying to decide between Phya and Yllas but do Canterbury not only do Phya for the three night trips?

It appears to me that Canterbury are more expensive than the other options I've looked at but they do appear to get very good reviews online.

Is GoHop a viable alternative to the other two options? http://www.visitsanta.ie/trips/5day/festive - they offer a longer four night stay and are competitively priced (although the prices across the board are MAD).

Pyhä on the other hand is a smaller resort than Ylläs just by the Pyhä-Luosto national park.

A lot of work and planning goes into these magical trips so it’s so rewarding to see how excited everyone is heading off with their families. While its very busy overseeing our Lapland program, it is my favourite time of year, I love the buzz of it! A lot of Travel Agents around the country have clients on these trips and I’d like to thank them for their support. A big thanks to Aer Lingus, who also go that extra mile in helping to make these flights extra special. Lapland 2024 has just gone up for sale and it’s great to see all the interest in it. Triple Treat – 3 Night Trip 2024

Nestled high within the arctic circle lies a place that blends magical imagination with breathtaking reality. A wintery wonderland where snow stretches in all directions and nature’s showstopping spectacle the northern lights dances across the night sky.

Lapland is quite unlike anywhere else on the planet. A vast, unrestrained wilderness blanketed with snow simply begging to be used for a snowball fight or to build a snowman, delightful towns that wouldn’t appear out of place in fairy tales, thick forests with ancient origins, and of course, Lapland’s most famous resident, Santa Clause.

Whether you’re making the trip north with young children desperate to catch a glimpse of jolly St Nicholas and perhaps a few of the roughly 200,000 reindeer in the region or simply as adults looking for a spectacular setting for one of the most unique holiday destinations around, Lapland is where the magic comes to life.

Lapland is a beautiful, sprawling area that covers the northern regions of Finland, Norway, Sweden and even part of Russia’s Kola Peninsula. It is home to less than 200,000 people but covers a huge 100,366 square km, making it comfortably bigger than the whole of Ireland.

While the name Lapland has become synonymous with a jolly man who generally wears a red suit (more on that shortly), the region has been home to the traditional Sami culture for considerably longer than the existence of Christmas.

These indigenous people may number less than 80,000 today, but their fascinating way of life, colourful costumes and deep connection to this harsh yet stunning environment shouldn’t be missed on any visit to Lapland. This is a region that effortlessly blends the mythical and fantastical with a rich history and traditional culture that makes it a wonderful place to visit for people of all ages.

For many, Christmas has simply become a time of buying gifts and then fretting over whether you made the correct purchase. In many ways, materialism has overtaken the spirit of Christmas. Often we forgo life-affirming experiences for gadgets that we will quickly tire of anywhere – but this Christmas, why not go against the grain and create memories that you’ll be coming back to for years to come?

Visiting Lapland for Christmas is an experience that no child forgets in a hurry – or adult for that matter – and that moment when your sleigh pulls up outside Santa’s house in the forest will leave people of all ages with that warm magical feeling inside that we all have as children but which gradually fades as we grow up.

But this is no Disneyland Christmas. Lapland’s remoteness and ruggedness provide a glorious setting for an experience that remains intrinsically linked with the natural world. While there is plenty of time to curl up next to a cosy fire, a few days in Lapland promises plenty of outdoor fun and a truly unique Christmas experience.

While visiting the Big Man will probably sit high on every wish list, there’s plenty more to do while you’re in Lapland. Whether you’re looking for high-octane fun as you thunder through ancient forests or the more sedate as you make use of the saunas and amenities in the town of Pyhä, there’s plenty to keep everyone happy.

Perhaps you’ve always dreamed of learning to drive a snowmobile or maybe it’s the idea of riding on a sleigh pulled by either huskies or reindeer as your hurtle through a frozen wilderness quite unlike anywhere you’ve ever experienced that you’re looking forward to the most. Tobogganing is also available as is a visit to a real-life igloo where you’ll experience what it’s like to live within walls made entirely of ice.

Then we come to one of nature’s true wonders – a sight so mesmerising that it’s almost worth making the long journey to simply stare up at the sky in amazement. The Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis to use its more scientific name, is quite simply spellbinding if you’re lucky enough to witness it. There’s a good deal of fortune involved when it comes to seeing these dazzling lights so keep your fingers crossed and stay up-to-date with the Northern Lights Forecast app.

An Experience to Remember

We are happy to offer everything from single-day trips to 3-night packages that allows you to experience much more of what Lapland has to offer.

If you’re short on time then no problem. Our single-day option whisks you from Dublin to Lapland and back in a single day while still allowing you to visit Santa and experience this extraordinary setting.

For those with a little more time, why not stick around for a few days? Our two or three-night options let you get to know the region better and mean you can experience a wider variety of activities on offer. For a better idea of what is included in all three packages available, visit our holiday tours page for a full breakdown of the daily schedules.

There are holidays that you’ll always vaguely remember, then there are experiences that you’ll never forget. Children might be looking forward to seeing Santa Clause the most, but in years to come it may well be the sleigh ride through the frigid forest with the setting sun as a backdrop that they remember the most. While adults who had long considered themselves too old to experience Christmas as they did as children, might best recall the moment when they finally came face to face with Santa.

There’s no right way to experience Lapland. However you choose to do it, this is one place that stays with you for the rest of your life.

WE ARE HERE TO HELP

Excitement at an all-time high on a family trip to Lapland

Christmas may be a fading memory, but sorcha hamilton’s kids will never forget this one.

sunway lapland 2 night trip

We sit into a long sledge and the pack of 12 fluffy, excited dogs, yapping and jumping around, suddenly stand to attention and take off.

Sorcha Hamilton's face

There are more reindeer than people in Lapland – or so they say. This beautiful, snowy region at the northernmost tip of Finland is home to roughly 200,000 of these calm and majestic animals. Though there is also one particularly famous inhabitant of this sparsely-populated area – and the very reason for our visit.

Santa Claus is the big talking point for our mid-December journey to the North Pole – which is a bit surreal, it has to be said, when you see it written up on the departure monitors at Dublin Airport, with the gate number and time of boarding.

Our flight from Dublin goes swiftly with the on-board elves keeping the young passengers happy and busy with games, face-painting and storytelling – and reminders to keep an eye out the window for any flying reindeer. There’s a big cheer when we land at the small airport of Kittilia, and excitement is at an all-time high with the first sighting – and handling – of snow.

Out the window, the spare, wintery landscape of woodlands and snow looks just like a scene from Narnia.

First, we’re bustled into a big warehouse to get kitted out in snowsuits, boots, gloves and thermal hats. In this climate, in the Arctic Circle, temperatures can go as low as minus 20 degrees in December. Then we’re off to meet a special elf, called Tonttu, who keeps us all entertained with songs and fascinating tales of life as a helper for Santa, during a short bus-ride to the hotel. Out the window, the spare, wintery landscape of woodlands and snow looks just like a scene from Narnia.

On the first morning we’re collected by coach to travel to Santa’s Secret Hideaway, where we catch our first sighting of reindeer among the trees. We sip hot berry juice while throwing and dodging snowballs, and wandering around the small gathering of wooden chalets.

Next we head into Elf School to learn a little bit more about life in this magical place – and some important words in Finnish, such as Joulupukki (Santa Claus) and poro (reindeer) – and then on to Santa’s workshop to do some Christmas arts and crafts. Then it’s a trip to Mrs Claus to decorate biscuits, and finally a visit to the man himself. There are no big queues, everything is calmly organised and staggered in groups, with plenty of time in between for playing in the snow.

After lunch – and in the dark – we crunch through the snow for a short walk on a forest path. First up is a reindeer ride through the trees, then we go on a snowmobile across a frozen lake and finally – and the big highlight – is the huskies ride. We sit into a long sledge and the pack of 12 fluffy, excited dogs, yapping and jumping around, suddenly stand to attention and take off. It’s a pretty special experience, watching this powerful troop at work, gliding along the snowy banks and pulling the four of us – plus the trainer – through the dark with awe-inspiring ease.

sunway lapland 2 night trip

Afterwards, we warm up beside the big open fires – there’s more hot berry juice on offer - and we head back to do some more tobogganing. Playing in the snow – in the dark – was up there as one of the best parts of the holiday, according to my two children, aged six and nine. Even better were the slopes they discovered at the front of the hotel – perfect for high-speed sledding.

On the second day we’re off to the Snow Village. This is a fascinating construction, a bit like a large warren of interconnected rooms made entirely of snow. Every year it is made from scratch, and building can only begin when temperatures fall below minus 5 degrees.

On our final morning, we spend the last few hours playing in the snow

The guide explains how it is constructed with artificial snow made from a river that flows by the site; artificial snow is, crucially, more dense than real snow and essential for insulating and making the walls some 2-3 metres thick. Key to the construction are large inflatable balloons, which are sprayed with snow, then deflated and removed, leaving behind the hollows for rooms. Inside, temperatures stay between zero and minus five, even though outside the temperatures can go way below.

Walking around you’ll spot the many stunning ice sculptures – a large owl, two hands reminiscent of an Escher drawing, and many more. There’s an ice slide for the children to play on – in between running around and exploring the many different interconnected rooms - and a screening area with a short film about the construction of the Snow Village. At the ice bar, you can enjoy an especially cool drink from a glass made of ice.

There are only a few hours of daylight in this northerly spot in Finland, which fades by late morning into a light bluish hue. Darkness sets in from about 2pm. On our final morning, we spend the last few hours playing in the snow while watching the strangest sunrise – just a curve of bright orange peeping over the horizon, then disappearing again.

Sorcha Hamilton travelled as a guest of Sunway, which is now taking bookings for holidays to Lapland in December 2020. Prices start from €1029 per adult and €869 per child for one, two or three night trips from Dublin, Cork or Shannon. sunway.ie

Wow! Lapland was the trip of a lifetime and a family memory to last forever. The magic begins from the moment you reach the airport but meeting Santa and his elves was like something out of a fairy tale. My two boys still talk about it to this day.

Gillian Murphy, Cassidy Travel Expert Advisor

Fun packed from start to finish. It was hard to sit still, I was that excited and every hour brought more magic!

Erin Murphy, 11 yrs, Rush

My one-night trip to Lapland was the magical holiday of a lifetime. At nearly 40 years of age, it was a dream come true for me, not to mention my 3 children. I just wish I went for longer with the 2 or 3 night trips!

Julie Hanna, Cassidy Travel's Cruise Expert

Our family trip to Lapland was magical. I will never forget that when it started to snow, our 7 year old asked 'Is that Santa's magic dust falling?' because the snow in Lapland was so fine!

Paula, Dublin

Lapland is the trip where kids’ dreams come true! Meeting the Santa and the elves to feeding the reindeer, the children's excitement never dropped. It’s a trip me and my family will remember for the rest of our lives.

Brian, Cassidy Travel Golf Holiday Expert

It was a magical experience for my 5 year old Robyn from start to finish! The reindeer, huskies and all the stops with the elves were brilliant. Our guides (Tasha and Lauran) were brilliant and made the trip so much fun for all the kids (and adults!)

Our Experts

You'll fly into Kittila airport on our three night trip to Lapland. Located in Northern Lapland, this destination has more snow, and is darker and colder than Southern Lapland. There are two resorts near Kittila airport - the first is Ylläs, where the Northern Lights are regular visitors, and street lights are turned off for better visibility on Aurora Borealis nights! Close by are two genuine Lappish villages, and a fantastic network of cross-country trails for snow sports. The second resort is a new addition for 2018 - Levi Resort offers stunning landscapes of frozen lakes, snow-capped trees and breathtaking mountains. Known as Finland's biggest ski resort, Levi is very family friendly, featuring a magical array of restaurants, shops and bars.

Things to do:

Sample the range of restaurants available, or shop in the beautiful markets for a souvenir! Enjoy snow sports outside the city, and see if you can spot a reindeer!

The cost is inclusive of the following:

- Direct flights from the Republic of Ireland - Services and activities as specified on your tour - Transfers and overnight stays at your chosen accommodation - Meals as per your itinerary - Thermal Suits and Boots (not available for infants under 2 years)

ARE TOURS SUITABLE FOR ADULTS, OLDER CHILDREN & TEENS?

Yes! Older children, teens and adults really enjoy the outdoor activities such as snowmobiles, reindeer & husky safaris and many of the Lapland experiences!

WHAT IS THE FOOD LIKE?

Generally breakfast, lunch and dinner are buffet style and will cater to both adults and children's tastes. Where possible, we do try to ensure meals are similar to home, however you are travelling to a foreign county so do not expect the same food. It is your responsibility to inform us of dietary requirements before travelling.

WILL MY GUIDES SPEAK ENGLISH?

All our Elf helpers speak English, and locals often speak both Finnish and English.

IS IT SAFE?

Lapland is perfectly safe provided you follow the instructions from your arctic guides. Arctic conditions prevail, so it is important to be sensible and accept guidance when given. Parents and guardians are responsible for supervising their own party for the duration of the tour, and it's important to note that your guide may alter the scheduled tour content in the interests if safety.

WILL YOU HELP US WITH ACTIVITES?

We have special safety regulations regarding every aspect of safaris. Technical instruction is provided before all safaris, so all participants have knowledge on how to manoeuver the vehicles. Guidance will be in English.

About your surroundings:

WILL IT BE DARK DURING THE DAY?

An average Lapland day will provide 4.5 hours of what is termed 'grey' light (generally between 10:00hrs and 14:30hrs daily Finnish time, although this will vary depending on location). Outside of these hours it will be like night time at home in Ireland but with the advantage of snow. Venues for our day visits to Lapland are accordingly lit naturally using roaring fires and Lappish outdoor candles providing an attractive setting for the events taking place.

IS LAPLAND SUITABLE FOR INFANTS?

Finland can reach severely cold temperatures, and it is essential that you bring adequate thermal clothing for any children less than two years of age. We would recommend that you purchase a thermal snow suit for children under 2 years of age and bring it with you. It is recommended that you consult your doctor before booking and seek advice on the suitability of such harsh conditions for your child. It is also worth noting that buggies will not be suitable for use in the deep snow found in most areas.

WHAT SHOULD I PACK?

All guests receive Thermal Suits on arrival, which are similar to Ski Suits and boots. You will need to pack a selection of warm clothing to layer underneath including thermal underwear and warm tights. It is advisable that you wear something comfortable underneath the suits as you are in these for the majority of the time spent in Lapland. Don’t forget to bring hats, waterproof gloves and scarves for extra warmth. Snow boots are provided for your own safety, it is essential that these are worn at all times. Wellington boots and denim jeans are unsuitable for Lapland weather conditions.

We have a range of suit and boot sizes available, so those looking for extra large sizes will find a suit to fit them. However, we do not provide thermal suits for Infants under 2 years of age.

WILL IT BE COLD?

Temperatures can vary year on year, but can regularly fall to -15 and have been known to go even lower, however you will be provided with Thermal Suits and Snow Boots, so you will be suitably dressed for the cold. If you are concerned about the cold, consider travelling in early December as it is often not as cold as late December.

A visit to Santa's Grotto forms an essential part of each and every one of our Lapland Holidays. Concealed in a secret location, it can often only be reached with the help of huskies, reindeers, snowmobiles and even Santa's Elves.

In the midst of the frosty forest, you will arrive at Santa's warm and welcoming refuge glinting in the starlight. Cross the threshold into a world of delight, where children and parents alike will be awestruck by what hides within.

Home to Santa's head office, where he spends his days checking his lists of who's been naughty and nice, a trip to the Grotto is a once in a lifetime experience. He's eagerly awaiting the arrival of this year's boys and girls, and planning on spending some time with each family individually. He may even have a gift for the guests who have come so far to see him.

Santa's Grotto

sunway lapland 2 night trip

One of the highlights of your trip to Lapland is the chance to meet Santa's Reindeer and his brave team of huskies. Every visitor will get a chance to be guided through the gleaming snow on a sleigh pulled by reindeer or huskies.

Often these trusty creatures are the only ones who know the precise location of Santa's hidden Grotto! Whether you're just taking a little trip through the forest, or on a mission to find Santa's Grotto or the Elf Workshop, the Reindeer or Husky Safari is a truly magical way to explore lapland, and meet Santa's furry friends!

Reindeer & Husky Safaris

Tobogganing is just one of the fun snowy pursuits you can enjoy on our Trips to Lapland. Swoop through the slopes and hills on the toboggans and sleds available for both adults and children.

The resort of Pyha has an excellent range of snow-covered slopes and runs, and toboggans can be rented by all guests. You will also find a number of sleds around Santa's Grotto and the Elf Workshop, where you can bound through flurries of powdery white while you wait to meet Father Christmas.

Or, for a slower paced alternative, bundle the family into a blanket-covered sleigh and get pulled across the glistening countryside by a team of huskies and reindeer.

Powerful snowmobiles play a part in all of our Lapland Holidays. Taking you through snowy crossings on the search for Santa, they're a breathtaking way to travel.

Some of our tours include the chance to try your hand at driving a snowmobile yourself - you might be asked to produce your driving licence so don't forget to bring it along. Children's snowmobiles can also be driven on select trips, and are suitable for anyone aged four and upwards subject to height restrictions.

Lapland is the definitive destination for experiencing snowmobiling check that you're properly insured so you don't miss out!

Very few lucky children are invited to Lapland's secret Elf Workshop. The elves are snowed under with tasks, and will welcome the extra help as they spend some time with visitors to their workshop.

You'll find out top secret tips on just how the elves manage to make all the gifts, and see a little of the elves preparations for Christmas Day! Guests will get a glimpse of the elves hard at work, and will teach children tricks of the trade and how to decorate their own Gingerbread cookies. If you're lucky, the elves might even drop a hint or two about how to find Santa's Grotto!

Most two and three day visits to Lapland include a magical visit to the Elf Workshop which kids and adults will love.
