Genius Star Wars Theory Reveals Rey's Most Incredible Force Power - One Hiding In Plain Sight For 9 Years

  • Kylo Ren's reaction in The Force Awakens hints at an incredible Force power within Rey.
  • Rey's unique ability to interact with the past through Force visions may have major implications in the Star Wars universe.
  • The power of time travel through the Force may have been specific to Rey and Kylo Ren as part of the Force Dyad.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens may have subtly revealed Rey Skywalker's most incredible Force power—and perhaps the most incredible power in Star Wars —9 years ago. In The Force Awakens , Kylo Ren had an odd reaction upon hearing a girl was traveling with the rogue stormtrooper and the droid carrying the map to Luke Skywalker. Kylo pulled the messenger in with a Force choke and demanded, "What girl?" This was bizarre, as it expressed concern over something that seemed inconsequential (the real issue was the map), almost as if he knew such a girl could be coming.

However, this strange response may reflect something much deeper and much more exciting for Star Wars movies and TV shows , including upcoming Star Wars movies . Indeed, this moment, and one other key scene in The Force Awakens may have introduced a brand-new ability among Star Wars' Force powers that went entirely undetected. If true, this could have massive implications for the future of Star Wars , especially Rey's upcoming Star Wars movie.

Star Wars: New Jedi Order - Cast, Story, Timeline & Everything We Know

Rey's Star Wars return is happening in Star Wars: New Jedi Order. Here's what is known about the story, cast, and release of Daisy Ridley's film.

Rey's "Forceback" In The Force Awakens Is Unlike Other Star Wars Visions

Created By Michael Arndt, J.J. Abrams, Lawrence Kasdan

Cast Daisy Ridley

First Appearance Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens

Alliance Jedi

In The Force Awakens , Rey, Finn, Han Solo, and Chewbacca sought Maz Kanata for assistance, where it was shockingly revealed that Maz had Anakin Skywalker's old lightsaber. When it called out to Rey, she found it hidden away in Maz's castle; however, as she reached for it, she was suddenly thrown into moments from the past , from Luke Skywalker sitting in the rain with his hand on R2-D2 to Kylo Ren standing with the Knights of Ren. Although this certainly wasn't the first example of Force visions in Star Wars , it felt quite distinct from those that had come before.

Some of the most prominent Force visions in Star Wars include those of Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones and Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith , which both saw Anakin having nightmares about his mother's death and Padmé's death. Tragically, these events did come to pass, and they were therefore more conventional visions; essentially, Anakin was seeing into the future. Similarly, in Star Wars: The Clone Wars , Ahsoka Tano began having visions—also as nightmares—of Padmé being assassinated. This example was a bit distinct, as Ahsoka was able to change Padmé's fate.

However, Rey's vision in The Force Awakens was entirely unlike those examples. For one, Rey was seeing the past, not the future. For another, and more importantly, Rey was not a passive observer of the events unfolding. Rather, Rey was physically in these moments from the past, able to interact with those in the visions, and they were able to interact with her. One key example was in the scene with Kylo Ren and the Knights of Ren, in which Kylo turned, saw her, and began advancing toward her.

Rey's vision in The Force Awakens was entirely unlike those examples.

Did Rey Actually Travel With Time Through The Force?

Given Rey's ability to interact with these moments in the past, it seems possible that, rather than a vision, Rey had truly entered that point in time . This could be made possible by the Force Dyad , a new Star Wars concept introduced in the sequel trilogy that enabled Kylo Ren and Rey to pull off their incredible Force feats, such as passing a lightsaber through space and experiencing their Force bonds, which brought them face-to-face at random moments and when they were far apart. In fact, time travel may very well be a Force Dyad power .

This would also explain Kylo Ren's odd reaction to hearing about the girl with Finn and BB-8 . His alarm, which was otherwise a bit strange, could have been because he'd feared the girl he'd once seen appear and disappear in front of him. That is, if Rey's exposure to the past wasn't through visions but rather through a form of time travel via the Force, Kylo Ren would undoubtedly have remembered such a shocking moment and been wary of the power the Force-user he saw would have possessed.

Rey & Kylo Ren Never Mastered The Force Dyad

Ben solo/kylo ren.

Cast Adam Driver, Matthew Wood

Alliance Jedi, First Order

This power may also have been one unique to Kylo Ren and Rey as two parts of the Force Dyad . Notably, when Rey entered the memory of Luke watching the Temple burn, Luke didn't acknowledge her presence, nor did Unkar Plutt and little Rey when she jumped to the moment her parents left her behind on Jakku. As Kylo Ren was the only one to acknowledge and respond to her, that may be further confirmation that this ability was specific to the Dyad.

Unfortunately, this power wasn't fully explored in the sequel trilogy. Although Rey does impressively manage to pass a lightsaber to Kylo Ren through space in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker , that was the greatest feat the two accomplished (albeit an incredible one) through the Force Dyad. As Ben Solo also died at the end of The Rise of Skywalker , it seems unlikely the Dyad will be explored in more detail. Unfortunately, that may mean that this power doesn't get further attention, even in Rey's upcoming Star Wars movie.

Will Rey Still Possess This Force Power When She Leads Her New Jedi Order?

Star Wars has yet to confirm that the powers afforded to Rey through the Force Dyad will be cut off now that Ben has died . His death came at the end of the movie, so the implications of it, particularly for Rey, have yet to be revealed. As Rey's movie is set 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker , it's a safe assumption that this will be one aspect of the new movie. This means Rey could maintain her powers, the potential time travel included, in this next phase of her story, which would mean incredible things for Star Wars .

As Rey is expected to establish a new Jedi Order, she could use this ability to her advantage, not only seeing the flaws of the prequel trilogy's Jedi Order but also perhaps the very origins of the Jedi. This could even tie into yet another upcoming Star Wars movie, thought to be titled Dawn of the Jedi , which is set to reveal the very first Jedi. Whether the power is further developed, though, it's possible that these scenes in Star Wars: The Force Awakens comprise Rey Skywalker's most impressive Force power.

Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens

Set 30 years after Star Wars: Episode VI: Return of the Jedi , Star Wars: The Force Awakens teams new heroes Finn (John Boyega), Rey (Daisy Ridley), and Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) with Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher), who is now a General in the Rebel Alliance. Together they try to track down Luke Skywalker while battling the First Order, led by the villainous Kylo Ren. The Force Awakens is the first Star Wars film to be produced by Disney and was directed by JJ Abrams.

Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi

In the second installment of the Star Wars sequel trilogy, General Leia Organa leads the Resistance forces against the First Order. Meanwhile, Luke Skywalker struggles to come to terms with his past failures, while Rey urges him to train her in the Force and join the resistance. Culminating in a massive battle between the two armies, The Last Jedi raises the stakes of this intergalactic war, and sees the final fight of one beloved character.

Star Wars: Episode IX- The Rise of Skywalker

This is the third installment of the Star Wars sequel trilogy and serves as the culmination of the Skywalker saga. The film sees Rey (Daisy Ridley), Poe (Oscar Isaac), and Finn (John Boyega) team up to put an end to the First Order after Palpatine mysteriously returns. Jurassic World helmsman Colin Trevorrow was originally named director back in 2015 when the film first entered development, but he parted ways with Lucasfilm due to creative differences over the script. In September 2017, Star Wars: The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams signed on to finish what he started.

The Star Wars Timeline Explained: All 9 Eras

Ahsoka season 2: story, updates, everything we know, star wars: new jedi order - cast, story, timeline & everything we know.

  • Some Star Wars characters could have thrived in different eras, bringing unique impacts to the galaxy.
  • Characters like Anakin Skywalker and Princess Leia could have been pivotal in other Star Wars timelines.
  • Even after the Skywalker Saga, imagining characters in different eras can lead to intriguing possibilities.

Some of Star Wars ' best characters would have done just as well (if not better) in different eras throughout the timeline. In truth, Star Wars' movies and TV shows tend to have plenty of returning characters, whether it be through thrilling cameos or new story arcs. However, as Star Wars moves beyond the Skywalker Saga and explores brand-new eras, those returns may become fewer and farther between.

Indeed, many beloved Star Wars characters are unlikely to be seen again, especially those who have died in the franchise. Even so, it's fun to imagine what their stories could have looked like had they been in a different period of Star Wars entirely. These 12 characters in particular would have been just as incredible—if not more so—had they appeared in other Star Wars eras .

From the Dawn of the Jedi in ancient times to the founding of the New Jedi Order, the Star Wars canon timeline has a rich history across nine eras.

12 Clone Wars Era Anakin Would Have Been Amazing During The Rebellion

First appeared in: a new hope, anakin skywalker/darth vader.

Anakin Skywalker was essential to the Republic and the Jedi during the Clone Wars. In fact, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin became heroes to the entire Republic throughout the Clone Wars era because of how much they contributed to the war effort. Although Anakin obviously turned to the dark side in the end and was a vicious Sith Lord helping Palpatine rule the Empire, had he stayed on the light side of the Force and been one of the survivors of Order 66 , he could have had an incredible impact on the Rebellion.

Not only was Anakin one of Star Wars' most powerful Jedi , but he also had significant experience with war tactics following the Clone Wars. Moreover, assuming other aspects of the Empire remained the same, he would have had considerable insight into Palpatine and his plots . Had Anakin been on the side of the Rebels, he could have done incredible damage to the Empire, perhaps bringing about its end even before the original trilogy's Rebellion did.

11 Princess Leia Would Have Been The Perfect Republic Era Senator

Leia organa.

Leia was invaluable to the Rebellion and the Resistance in the movies, and, although not shown on screen, she was also an influential Senator in the New Republic Era, helping the galaxy rebuild after the fall of the Empire. While this was a critical period in the Star Wars timeline, this political prowess also suggests how much positive impact she could have had on the Republic Senate during the prequel trilogy.

Although the prequel trilogy's Republic was in some ways doomed to fail, as Palpatine was meticulously plotting the downfall of the Republic and the Jedi by stoking the flames of the Clone Wars, Leia could nevertheless have had a positive impact. While she may not have been able to stop the war or Palpatine's larger plot, she could have helped many Republic Senators, and perhaps even some Separatists, see that something nefarious was occurring beneath the surface. In fact, although a bit too late, that is precisely what her mother, Padmé, tried to do .

10 Luke Skywalker Would Have Thrived In The Prequel Trilogy Jedi Order

Luke skywalker.

Although Luke Skywalker was the hope for the Jedi's future, he would also have thrived in the prequel trilogy's Jedi Order . Luke was in many ways the ideal Jedi. While he began his Jedi training much older than most Jedi (including his father, who was also quite old when he joined the Order compared to most Jedi Initiates), he exhibited many of the best traits of a Jedi.

Luke was compassionate, wise, disciplined, and committed to the light side of the Force even in the face of temptation from two of Star Wars ' most powerful Sith . Given that he achieved all this without the structure of a Jedi Order and with limited training with Obi-Wan and Master Yoda. Had Luke been raised in the Jedi Temple, he undoubtedly could have become an even more powerful Jedi.

Had Luke been raised in the Jedi Temple, he undoubtedly could have become an even more powerful Jedi.

9 Asajj Ventress Would Have Been A Great Antagonist In The New Republic Era

First appeared in: star wars: clone wars (2003), asajj ventress.

Based on her surprising cameo in Star Wars: The Bad Batch season 3, it seems Asajj Ventress is no longer on the dark side of the Force. Although she was Count Dooku's apprentice in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and then became a bounty hunter of questionable morals, when she appeared in The Bad Batch , Ventress was sporting two yellow lightsabers. Although her change in perspective wasn't confirmed in the show, the color of her lightsabers alone suggests she has rejoined the light side of the Force .

Despite that, Ventress remains an incredible villain in Star Wars . As one of the Nightsisters of Dathomir , Ventress wielded incredible power, and she proved to be a fierce assassin, even giving Anakin and Obi-Wan a run for their money throughout The Clone Wars . Had Ventress stayed on the dark side, she would have been a formidable opponent during the New Republic Era. Particularly with Vader and Palpatine gone (temporarily, in Palpatine's case), Ventress would have had the perfect opportunity to strike.

8 Ahsoka Tano Would Be A Great Leader Of The Resistance

First appeared in: star wars: the clone wars, ahsoka tano.

Ahsoka Tano is arguably one of the best characters in Star Wars , and she has certainly proven herself as an incredible Jedi, fighter, and leader. Although her time in the New Republic Era is still being revealed in the Ahsoka show, her absence from the sequel trilogy seemingly suggests she wasn't part of the Resistance for whatever reason. However, she would have been an incredible addition to the fight against the First Order .

Ahsoka season 2 has finally been confirmed by Star Wars, and the story is now in development. Here's everything we know about the project.

Not only would Ahsoka have had substantial experience given her time in the Clone Wars and assisting the Rebellion, but she also would have been a Jedi fighter when the Resistance had none. Moreover, Ahsoka had seen first-hand how things could go wrong, particularly with her history in the Jedi Order. Had Ahsoka been at the helm of the Resistance, she would have posed a major threat to the First Order—and she likely would have had no difficulty defeating Kylo Ren.

7 Obi-Wan Kenobi Was Made For The High Republic Era

Obi-wan kenobi.

Obi-Wan was essential to the Clone Wars and to watching over Luke Skywalker until he was ready to be trained as a Jedi, but he would have been a perfect fit for the High Republic Era , the period largely considered the golden age for the Jedi and the Republic. Unlike the prequel trilogy era, which was marked by war and the downfall of the Jedi, the High Republic Era saw the Jedi in a period of peace, able to focus on a greater understanding of the Force. Obi-Wan would have been an excellent addition to such a period.

While, yes, Obi-Wan was a powerful fighter who played a major role in the war, his disposition and values were much more aligned with those of the High Republic. In fact, Obi-Wan had wisdom and a curious spirit—after all, that was how he discovered Kamino and the clone troopers—which would have made him a great asset to this age of exploration. Although the Jedi and the Republic would undoubtedly have fared much worse without him, this era would have been the best for Obi-Wan.

6 Qui-Gon Jinn Would Have Been Helpful During The Dark Times

First appeared in: star wars: episode i - the phantom menace, qui-gon jinn.

Qui-Gon Jinn was a bit of a troublemaker even before he strong-armed the Jedi Council into accepting Anakin as a Padawan against their better judgment. In fact, Yoda even references Obi-Wan sharing Qui-Gon's defiance, suggesting a long-standing history of Qui-Gon challenging the Council. While that may have proven challenging for the Jedi Order of the prequel trilogy, it means Qui-Gon would have been an asset to the Rebellion during the Dark Times.

Qui-Gon would have been an asset to the Rebellion during the Dark Times.

Under Imperial rule, the few Jedi remaining had to go into hiding, at best working for the Rebellion in the shadows, as Ahsoka Tano had. However, Qui-Gon would have been brilliant in this capacity . Qui-Gon was known for being wise, patient, and discerning. These strengths would have lent themselves well to Qui-Gon plotting against the Empire and being tactical in undermining their rule. Moreover, Qui-Gon would surely have been invested in protecting Force-sensitive children, making him a perfect adversary against the Imperial Inquisitors .

5 Darth Vader Would Have Been A Bigger Threat During The Sequel Trilogy

The sequel trilogy controversially resurrected Emperor Palpatine in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker , but Darth Vader would have been a much more threatening original trilogy villain to bring back . In addition to Vader arguably being closer to his prime than Palpatine had been in Return of the Jedi , Vader also had influence in a way that Palpatine didn't. Specifically, assuming other plot points remained the same, Darth Vader and Kylo Ren together would have posed an incredible threat to the galaxy.

Darth Vader and Kylo Ren together would have posed an incredible threat to the galaxy.

Kylo Ren was obsessed with being like his grandfather and carrying on his legacy, which would have made him unfailingly loyal. This would have been especially dangerous, as it would have undone the Sith's most fatal flaw. Kylo Ren may have been the very first Sith apprentice who wasn't seeking to overthrow his master. Rather, the two could have truly built an Empire and ruled together .

4 Padmé Amidala Could Have Led The Rebellion

Padmé amidala.

Padmé Amidala was an absolute powerhouse of a character, and she was gone too soon. Throughout the prequel trilogy, she proved herself to be a fearless leader and one of the most upstanding characters in the franchise in terms of her values and her unwavering commitment to them. After serving as Queen of Naboo at just 14, she became a Senator in the Republic who fought not only for her own people but also for myriad planets and people throughout the galaxy.

She was also unafraid even as she was being targeted in an assassination attempt and was willing to walk away from the man she loved when he became something she couldn't abide. In light of that, Padmé would have been an incredible leader of the Rebellion . In fact, although eventually cut, Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith set up that very plot point, with Padmé effectively starting the Rebellion. However, had she lived to fight with the Rebels, she would have had a massive influence.

3 Mace Windu Could Have Protected Luke's Jedi Temple

Mace Windu's death was the final step in Anakin Skywalker's turn to the dark side, as Anakin's decision to side with Palpatine over Mace (and allow Palpatine to kill him) cemented Anakin's allegiances. In the mere moments following Mace's death, Anakin accepted his new role as Palpatine's Sith apprentice. While that alone suggests the influence of Mace Windu's death on the larger Star Wars galaxy, his absence later in the Star Wars timeline had major implications as well .

Not only would Mace Windu have been helpful throughout the Dark Times, but he also may have saved Luke Skywalker's Jedi Temple. Luke was attempting to rebuild the Jedi from the ground up without assistance. Had he had the wisdom of a Jedi Master, especially one who had witnessed firsthand the fall of the prequel trilogy's Jedi Order, he may have anticipated the impending dangers and prevented the brutal destruction of his Temple, perhaps even saving Ben Solo in the process.

2 Rey's Power Could Have Protected Others During Order 66

First appeared in: star wars: the force awakens.

While some of Rey's powers may have come from her Palpatine bloodline, she nevertheless is an incredible Jedi, and she's more than proven her dedication to the light. Both of these aspects of her character would have given her a fair shot at surviving Order 66. After all, she stood against Palpatine and survived.

Moreover, Rey's power could have helped her save others from Order 66 , especially the younglings. If this were the case, Rey could have considerably changed the fate of the Jedi, perhaps helping many more survive. As Rey is seemingly going to be establishing her own Jedi Order in her upcoming Star Wars movie, she may have even been perfectly set up to rebuild the Jedi Order secretly during the Dark Times.

Rey's Star Wars return is happening in Star Wars: New Jedi Order. Here's what is known about the story, cast, and release of Daisy Ridley's film.

1 Darth Maul Would Have Been Better As The Threat To The New Republic

After appearing as the terrifying Sith apprentice in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace , Darth Maul went on to have incredible returns in The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels . Maul even made a live-action return in Solo: A Star Wars Story , setting him up as a crime lord. However, Maul was confirmed to have died (truly this time) in Rebels , ending his Star Wars story.

Had Maul survived, though, he would have been an incredible villain for the New Republic Era. In fact, initially, George Lucas intended Maul's story to be exactly that, with Maul returning in the sequels as a Sith Lord with Darth Talon as his Sith apprentice. In light of how controversial the sequel trilogy was, this may have been exactly what the sequels needed. While none of these plot lines were meant to be in Star Wars , it's nevertheless exciting to imagine what could have been had certain characters appeared in other eras.

The Voice of a Hundred Faces: Dee Bradley Baker’s ‘Star Wars’ Journey

With “The Bad Batch” ending this week on Disney+, the man who has voiced hundreds of “Star Wars” characters over the past two decades looks back on his run.

  • Share full article

In an animated scene, five soldiers in gray armor look serious

By Rafael Motamayor

For “Star Wars” fans who have seen only the theatrical blockbusters, clone troopers are peripheral figures, at most recalled as the title menace in “Attack of the Clones,” from 2002. But over the past two decades they have become essential to the franchise, the pillar of animated “Star Wars” series including “The Clone Wars,” “Star Wars Rebels” and most recently, “The Bad Batch.”

And in that time one man has been essential to the clones: Dee Bradley Baker, who has voiced them all.

Not all of the shows — all of the clones, hundreds of them since getting cast for “Star Wars: The Clone Wars,” which debuted in 2008 with a feature film and an animated series that lasted for seven seasons. Now Baker’s incredibly prolific gig, which also included plenty of non-clone roles, has finally come to an end: “The Bad Batch,” the “Clone Wars” sequel series, concludes its three-season run on Disney+ this week, and there are no plans for more clone shows.

“It’s been wonderfully gratifying to go on this journey,” Baker said.

Baker, 61, has been a voice actor for nearly 30 years, working on series like “Dexter’s Laboratory,” “American Dad,” “Codename: Kids Next Door” and “Space Jam.” Before “Star Wars,” he almost exclusively played funny parts: He voiced every animal in “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” Perry the Platypus in “Phineas & Ferb” and creatures in live-action projects like Sebastian the rat in “The Suicide Squad.”

“I would get cast as more young, energetic and comedic because that’s how I thought of myself,” Baker said. The “Star Wars” shows “pulled so much more from me as an actor because it asked things of me I wouldn’t even think of.”

Many of the dramatic and emotional stories early on in “The Clone Wars” involved the clone troopers. After all, it is easier to kill a replaceable clone, one of millions, than a Jedi who also shows up in the theatrical movies.

Though the series was on Cartoon Network and aimed at kids, the war stories were intense and put the increasingly hard-bitten clones through one wringer after another. One story arc channels the novella “Heart of Darkness”: The troopers are led by a ruthless Jedi General in a jungle planet, until the general’s constant sacrifice of lives leads to insurgency. One episode was directed by Walter Murch, the Oscar-winning sound designer behind the Vietnam War epic “Apocalypse Now,” itself inspired by “Heart of Darkness.”

“Voice acting is acting, you need the same skill and the same talent,” said Ashley Eckstein who played Ahsoka Tano . (This central “Clone Wars” character last year became the center of a live-action show , “Ahsoka,” starring Rosario Dawson.)

“It can even be harder and more difficult to do voice acting,” Eckstein continued. “Dee and I had to do some deeply emotional and action-packed scenes, and we had to stand still behind a microphone. You can’t act it out or move around. You have to convey all of it just through your voice.”

“The Clone Wars” was followed by “Star Wars Rebels,” which follows a small Rebel crew that eventually includes a group of surviving clones, and “The Bad Batch,” centered on a squad of “defective” clones with even more distinct personalities.

star wars ahsoka time travel fanfiction

One obstacle to making clone troopers compelling is the challenge of differentiating them. (They are, after all, clones.) There were small attempts from the beginning to make them distinct from a design standpoint. The creators gave them colorful armor and insignia to contrast them with the Empire’s more well-known stormtroopers, according to Dave Filoni, who was supervising director and an executive producer of “The Clone Wars” and is now the chief creative officer of Lucasfilm.

“They were able to express their individuality, where stormtroopers are individuals taken into service and stripped of their personality and identity,” Filoni wrote in an email. Still, a look is little without the voice and personality that goes with it, and Baker’s performance was a big reason the characters became so central.

The first test to see if Baker voicing all the clones would work came in “Rookies,” the fifth episode of “The Clone Wars.” The episode came from an idea by George Lucas, who wanted to do an episode of just clones, and follows a group of cadets who come together as a squad and stave off a droid invasion.

As Henry Gilroy, the show’s head writer, recalled, “That recording session was actually a revelation, for we realized that we could write anything for the clones to do with story and character and Dee would execute to perfection.”

The clones soon went from being one-off characters with little personality to proper members of the expanded cast, with their own emotional and dramatic arcs that carried on throughout the show’s seven seasons and into “The Bad Batch.” (The character Echo is the last surviving member of that rookie squad.)

All the clones are based, fittingly, on the same voice: the one Baker created to play Captain Rex, the second-in-command to Anakin Skywalker and his closest friend in “The Clone Wars,” after Obi-Wan Kenobi. Baker would settle on one or two defining qualities for each clone — rank, age, attitude, quirk — to guide his performances. He used to record one clone at a time, going through an entire script with one and then doing the same with the next and so on until an episode was done.

But as “The Clone Wars” developed more complex arcs, he took a faster, more daunting approach. “I would start to play all of them and just jump back and forth,” Baker said. “I just read through the scenes straight through as if they’re characters playing out a scene, but it’s just me going from one voice to the other.”

Michelle Ang, who stars in “The Bad Batch” as Omega, is amazed by this process. “He can not only perform the different personalities, but hold five different viewpoints of all the ‘Bad Batch’ characters and argue for each one,” she said. “It feels like there are four distinct people I’m working with.”

Eckstein called Baker a mentor, comparing their relationship to that of Ahsoka, her young Padawan character, and Baker’s seasoned Captain Rex. “He taught me the ways of the Force, the ways of voice acting,” she said. When she too was asked to play multiple characters in the same episodes, “I learned from Dee, who is brilliant at doing that.”

Baker, who started out in comedy, said improv helped train him to embrace the odd vocalizations “Star Wars” shows can require and to move fluidly between characters.

“I am not so much prepared as I’m ready,” he said. “You want to be open and available to steer this and configure that in a way that the writers you’re working with want things to go. You can’t prepare for it. You get that in the immediate human connection of now, and that is inherently improvisational.”

The end of “The Bad Batch” is the end of an era, even if other “Star Wars” roles eventually come Baker’s way, like the upcoming video game “Star Wars Outlaws.” Though characters like Ahsoka Tano live on in live-action, and Captain Rex made a cameo in “Ahsoka,” “The Bad Batch” characters were the last characters that Lucas, the “Star Wars” mastermind who is no longer involved with the franchise, had direct input on. The significance of this isn’t lost on Baker.

“I’ve loved ‘Star Wars’ since I was a kid,” he said. “Nothing can be more fun than to play in the universe that captured your imagination as a kid.”

Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace Cast: Where Are They Now?

Though the prequel film takes place a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, see what Natalie Portman, Liam Neeson and more ‘Phantom Menace’ stars are up to today

Star Wars   fans rejoiced on May 19, 1999.

On this day, George Lucas ’ intergalactic epic Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace premiered, bringing a brand new installment of the Skywalker saga to theaters for the first time since 1983’s  Star Wars: Episode VI — Return of the Jedi .

Set 32 years before the original trilogy, the film introduced a Force-sensitive child named Anakin Skywalker, who audiences already knew would one day become Darth Vader — this was finally their chance to see how.

Even after all this time, the blockbuster remains among the highest-grossing films (earning more than $1 billion at the global box office) and helped make Ewan McGregor , Natalie Portman and Samuel L. Jackson household names.

Here's what the  Phantom Menace  cast is doing now since the film's May 1999 debut.

Liam Neeson as Qui-Gon Jinn

Several years after appearing in Steven Spielberg 's Schindler's List (1993) and earning his first Oscar nomination for depicting Oskar Schindler, Liam Neeson starred as Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn in The Phantom Menace . The Star Wars film followed his character as he and his mentee, Obi-Wan Kenobi, came across a young Anakin Skywalker while they were serving as protection for 14-year-old Queen Padmé Amidala.

Even after his on-screen turn as Qui-Gon — which he later voiced in several Star Wars projects, including Star Wars: Episode IX — The Rise of Skywalker (2019) and Tales of the Jedi — it wouldn’t be the last fans would see of the Jedi Master.

Despite Neeson’s doubts about Star Wars ’ fading appeal, when asked if he’d consider reprising the part in a spinoff, the Irish actor told Collider in 2021, “ I'd be up for that! ” In 2022, he answered fans’ prayers by making a cameo as the beloved character on the series finale of Disney+’s Obi-Wan Kenobi .

Beyond his Star Wars role, Neeson has starred in films like Love Actually (2003), Taken (2008), The A-Team (2010), Memory (2022) and In the Land of Saints and Sinners (2023).

Neeson dated fellow actress Helen Mirren from 1980 to 1985 before meeting his future wife, Natasha Richardson , in 1994. Together, they had two sons before she died from a skiing accident in 2009.

Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi

McGregor played Qui-Gon's apprentice, Obi-Wan Kenobi, who was left in charge of Anakin's training after Qui-Gon's death at the end of the film. And the rest, as they say, is history.

McGregor went on to star in the remaining films of the prequel trilogy and reprised the part in the Disney+ miniseries Obi-Wan Kenobi in 2022. He also appeared in projects unrelated to Star Wars , such as Moulin Rouge! (2001), Salmon Fishing in the Yemen (2011) and Raymond & Ray (2022). On TV, McGregor has had roles on series like Fargo ; Halston , which earned him an Emmy for outstanding lead actor in a limited or anthology series or movie; and A Gentleman in Moscow .

Despite the subpar reviews Phantom Menace received upon its 1999 premiere, the Scottish actor has never regretted taking on the role he inherited from Alec Guinness . “ I am happy that I am this character for a lot of people ,” McGregor told Variety in a January 2024 interview, wherein he also spoke hopefully of continuing his character’s story on Obi-Wan Kenobi . “I would love to do the second season, but there’s no talk of it yet. There is a lot going on at Disney,” he said.

For 22 years, McGregor was married to Eve Mavrakis — with whom he shares four kids — before they divorced in 2020 . He began dating fellow actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead in 2017, and they welcomed their first child in 2021. The couple wed in April 2022.

Jake Lloyd as Anakin Skywalker

Following turns in the 1996 films Unhook the Stars and Jingle All the Way , Jake Lloyd brought to life the role of Anakin Skywalker, who was destined to become the fearsome villain Darth Vader in later films.

Lloyd appeared in the 2001 film Madison and even worked behind the scenes on the short Peer Pressure (2009) before leaving Hollywood for good. In March 2015, the former child was reported for allegedly assaulting his mother and arrested for reckless driving that June. Five years later, his family released a statement to Geek News Now saying that Lloyd was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia.

In a March 2024 interview with Scripp News , his mother, Lisa Lloyd, revealed he had been 10 months into an 18-month stay at a mental health rehabilitation center. Although Lloyd’s paranoid schizophrenia diagnosis “ totally threw him off into an even worse depression ,” Lisa told the outlet he’s “doing much better than I expected” and is “becoming a little bit more social.”

Even decades later, Lloyd is still very much a Star Wars fan. “He loves all the new Star Wars stuff,” Lisa said. “People think Jake hates Star Wars . He loves it.”

Natalie Portman as Padmé Amidala

Portman gave life — and moxie — to the teenage queen of Naboo, Padmé Amidala, who sought to protect her people from enemies arising in the galaxy.

Portman reprised her role in the next two Star Wars prequels. And although the actress has had roles in multiple critically acclaimed films — including Marvel's Thor film series , Jackie (2016), Avengers: Endgame (2019) and May December (2023) — she has said she wouldn't mind exploring that galaxy far, far away again.

She expressed as much in 2023 when answering a fan question for GQ about her reviving Padmé, to which she replied, " No one's ever asked me to return , but I'm open to it.”

Apart from her Star Wars stardom, Portman has been nominated for several Oscars, and in 2010, she won Best Actress for Black Swan (2010).

While filming the drama, Portman met her future husband and the film's choreographer, Benjamin Millepied , with whom she shares two children, Amalia and Aleph . In July 2023, the couple quietly filed to dissolve their marriage after reports of Millepied’s alleged infidelity surfaced two months prior. They finalized their divorce in February 2024.

Anthony Daniels as C-3PO

Michael Stephens - PA Images; Karwai Tang/WireImage

After previously playing the character in George Lucas' original trilogy released in the '70s and '80s, Anthony Daniels reprised his role as the intelligent droid fluent in over 6 million forms of communications, C-3PO.

Daniels has continued to work as C-3PO on Star Wars projects, including the sequel trilogy beginning with Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens (2015) and ending with The Rise of Skywalker (2019). He also released a 2019 memoir about his role, titled I Am C-3PO: The Inside Story .

Although Daniels fondly owns the distinction as the only actor to appear in all 9 of the Skywalker saga   films (as well as 2016’s  Rogue One: A Star Wars Story  and 2018’s  Solo: A Star Wars Story ), he never quite got used to wearing the gold-plated suit that made him a star. “It was just awful, and it broke immediately, it was very fragile,” he told Role Recall in a 2020 interview. “And, of course, in the making [of the film], I would stand there covered in this fiberglass stuff, and the itching afterward was horrific.”

The actor has been married to film writer Christine Savage since 1999.

Kenny Baker as R2-D2

Kenny Baker was the original actor to portray the beloved droid R2-D2. He reprised his role for The Phantom Menace and the rest of the prequels.

Baker returned to the Star Wars universe as an R2 consultant for The Force Awakens in 2015. He died at 81 the following year and is survived by his two children, whom he had with his late wife, Eileen Baker.

Samuel L. Jackson as Mace Windu

Everett Collection; Amy Sussman/Getty Images

Jackson had already appeared in films like Spike Lee 's Do the Right Thing (1989), Martin Scorsese 's Goodfellas (1990) and Quentin Tarantino 's Pulp Fiction (1994) before starring as Jedi Master Mace Windu in the Star Wars prequel trilogy.

Since then, he's worked on a myriad of Hollywood hits, including The Hateful Eight (2015), Kong: Skull Island (2017) and more than a dozen Marvel projects as Nick Fury, including his own 2023 Disney+ spinoff series, Secret Invasion .

Although his character’s death scene in Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith (2005) seemed to seal his fate in the franchise, Jackson insisted there’s still a future for Mace Windu, telling Empire in February 2024, “HE’S NOT DEAD!!!” Furthermore, when asked whether he’d be interested in returning to play the Jedi Master in a Disney+-esque spinoff of his own, the actor enthusiastically said, “EVERYTHING YES!!”

Jackson has been married to actress-director LaTanya Richardson since 1980. They welcomed their daughter, Zoe, two years later.

Ian McDiarmid as Emperor Palpatine

Everett Collection; David M. Benett/Dave Benett/Getty Images

Ian McDiarmid was first cast as Emperor Palpatine in Return of the Jedi . He returned to the character, also known as Darth Sidious, for the prequel trilogy.

McDiarmid later returned to Palpatine in The Rise of Skywalker and on the Disney+ miniseries Obi Wan-Kenobi , as well as lent his voice for the character in the animated series Star Wars Rebels , Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi and Star Wars: The Bad Batch .

Ahmed Best as Jar Jar Binks

Ahmed Best portrayed the Gungan Jar Jar Binks in The Phantom Menace and voiced the character in the next two prequel films, several animated series and TV movies, as well as video games.

Following his turn as Jar Jar, Best appeared on TV shows such as Alias , Cougar Town , Big Time Rush and Law & Order: LA .

In 2018, Best revealed in a since-deleted tweet that public criticism of his Star Wars character made him contemplate ending his life. However, he credited his son — whom he shares with wife Raquel Horsford — as his " gift for survival ."

Best returned to Star Wars in 2020, voicing (human) Jedi Master Kelleran Beq on Star Wars: Jedi Temple Challenge . He played the live-action version of this character in 2023 in season 3 of Disney+'s The Mandalorian .

Leading up to Phantom Menace ’s 25th anniversary in 2024, the actor told PEOPLE that he hopes Jar Jar — whose role has been seemingly diminished in later Star Wars projects — will receive a proper ending to his story in a future project.

"There was this one piece of Star Wars literature where Jar Jar ended up being this homeless clown in the streets begging for money or something like that. And I was like, 'I don't think so. I don't think that's Jar Jar's fate,' ” Best said. “Jar Jar was spectacularly clumsy and failed upward. He was just a wonderful character that always found a way to succeed. And I would love to know Jar Jar's fate from there, even if it's a scene that closes it."
