How to organize a day trip to Positano during your stay in Sorrento

Day Trip to Positano from Sorrento

Positano is the village along the Amalfi Coast which is both closest and easiest to reach from Sorrento ... luckily it is also the most beautiful and famous of all the coastal villages and shouldn't be missed if you are staying for more than a day or two in Sorrento.

Getting to Sorrento from Positano:

  • Public buses ( see Sita Bus schedules )
  • Coast to Coast Bus (departures from Piazza Lauro throughout the day, tickets EUR 15)
  • Ferry ( see ferry schedules Sorrento - Positano )
  • Scooter ( rental from EUR 30/day )
  • Car (parking EUR 4/hour)
  • See also Amalfi Coast tours
Parking in Positano There is no free parking in Positano, unless you are willing to leave your car a number of kilometers (and staircases) from the center of town. There are numerous paid parking garages along the road; the closest to the pedestrian area of Positano are Mandara and De Gennaro, both of which charge around EUR 4/hour. Be aware if you are arriving by scooter that most scooter parking places are reserved for residents.

If you are arriving by bus or car, your walk through town will begin on Viale Pasitea , a wide pedestrian lane that winds down the cliffside towards the water's edge, lined by boutiques selling iconic Positano-style dresses, handcrafted leather sandals, and original art.

The lane ends in a small square which overlooks the sea across from the Church of Santa Maria Assunta , famous for its colorful ceramic-tiled cupola pictured on countless postcards. Inside the church, you can see the Madonna Nera icon, done in a Byzantine style and dating fromthe 13th century.

According to legend, the painting of the Madonna Nera was being carried on a Turkish vessel which ran aground near Positano. The Captain heard the words "Posa, posa" (Put it down, put it down) coming from the canvas and decided to throw it into the sea. The residents of Positano found it washed up on the beach where the church now stands, and the name “Positano” is said to have its roots in this legend.

After visiting the church, continue down the stairs to the Spiaggia Grande beach, where you can enjoy the beautiful view of the colorful town clinging to the cliffside behind you. There are a number of cafès, restaurants, beach clubs, and bars where you can relax by the sea after your walk.

If you'd like to continue your walk, you can take the trail to the right known as the “Sentiero degli Innamorati” which leads to the Fornillo Beach . There is a historic Saracen tower along the way, built on the furthest point of the coast to guard against pirates.

Montepertuso and Nocelle

If you are travelling by car or scooter, it's worth the effort to take a side trip up the cliffside to the village of Montepertuso and the hamlet of Nocelle. These two spots were once only accessible on foot along the Sentiero degli Dei trail from Agerola or the long staircase which climbed up the hillside from Positano. Today you can easily reach the villages by car, but the charm of these spots seem untouched by time. Take a minute to stop and admire the view from the small square, which stretches across the Mediterranean to the shores of Capri.

What to expect when visiting Positano

Positano is a scenic beach town in Italy, home to some of the most panoramic views on the Amalfi Coast. What many don’t know is its long history as a holiday resort from as far back as the Roman Empire. Experience its age-old charm in the quiet neighbourhood of Montepertuso, the highest hamlet of Nocelle, and the jaw-dropping Path of the Gods.

The best time to visit Positano is from late April to September, when the weather is sunny and the waters are warm. Sunbathe at Positano’s beaches — like Spiaggia Grande and Fornillo. And take a walking tour to Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta and its majolica-tiled dome, which houses a Byzantine Black Madonna and Child from the 13th century.

4 ways to get from Sorrento to Positano

Sorrento to positano by bus.

If you’re on a tight budget, you can take a bus instead . Several SITA buses cover the Sorrento-Positano route daily. There are departures almost every hour from 06:30 to 19:00.

A bus ticket only costs around €2 ($2.20). You can definitely save a lot of money by taking the bus, but you are likely to lose a lot of time and patience.

SITA buses on this route are always full or overcrowded. The waiting time can be as quick as 15 minutes during off-peak season but as long as 1.5 hours during peak season (June to August), especially on weekends. That’s usually in the scorching heat.

Also, remember that getting a bus doesn’t mean getting a seat. There’s a chance you’ll have to stand the entire 1 hour from Sorrento to Positano.

IMPORTANT : You can only buy your ticket at the ticket counter and you can’t get on the bus without a ticket. Some people have made the mistake of queueing for the bus for over an hour, only to find out that the line for tickets is just as long.

Departure and arrival station

Buses depart from Sita Bus Terminal next to Sorrento’s train station in the centre of the city.

The bus ride to Positano (Sponda) Bus Stop takes around 1 hour. This bus stop is about 1 km away or a 20-minute walk to the tourist centre.

Sorrento to Positano by Ferry

Ticket prices start from €18 ($19.40). There’s not much difference between the ferries’ prices so we suggest taking the Positano Jet with a shorter travel time — if you’re not prone to motion sickness.

Departure and arrival port

All ferries depart from Sorrento Port in the city centre. It is close to many hotels in the city, so you can just walk to the port of Sorrento.

To reach the international town of Sorrento you need to drive the coastal road to its furthest point. Spectacular views of the entire bay of Naples and the Island of Capri (that was once joined to Sorrento) are revealed as the Amalfi coast road emerges from over the mountain cliff. A short drive through the town before you arrive in the centre of a major shopping mall for the local people as well as tourists, with many shops (normally open all day, everyday in the summer, but during the low season they open between 9:00am – 1:00pm, then 4:00pm – 8:00pm, approximately). Sorrento seemed to inherit the traditional Neapolitan pizza from their neighboring city, therefore the Pizzeria’s in town are highly recommended. Sorrento, also being a city from the past, has an interesting history museum Correale di Terranova that can be visited in the morning.

The busy central Piazza dei Mulini is connected to a narrow downhill path and some occasional flights of steps that lead to the seafront. At Piazza dei Mulini, you must leave the car as all streets leading to the waterfront are for pedestrians only. The only way to reach restaurants situated on the beach that serve fresh daily fish, is to go on foot! These streets also lead to the cathedral, ceramic shops, fruit vendors, and apparel retail shops. Positano is alive at night as well, with exotic nightclubs such as Music on the Rocks and various bars and cafes that remain open until the sun comes up. There is a short walk uphill to return to the car, ascending the mountain, returning to the main coastal road that leads to Amalfi.

The road to Ravello is a slow uphill drive where you will pass several wineries and olive factories. Ravello is a rural village un spoilt by tourism, perched on top of a mountain cliff situated above Amalfi and Minori. It is famous for its breath-taking views and ancient monuments best exemplified by the gardens of Villa Cimbrone and Villa Rufolo. In high season, these gardens are rich in sweet secants of blooming flowers, shadows of flora and perfume of lemons. There are also many classical concerts held in the gardens of Villa Rufolo, located just off the main square of Ravello; tickets cost approximately 20 Euros each. Apart from the main cathedral and the history museum constructed in the basement of the cathedral, there are many other churches to visit near the town square. Along the narrow arches of Via Roma, there are a few small boutiques, and some traditional local restaurants with unique and exceptional cuisine.

Tour can be reserved as a private tour or you can create a group or we will help to find fellow passengers to share the tour and costs. The proposed itinerary is only a suggestion, the vehicle and English speaking driver is basically yours for the tour. If you would like to visit alternative towns please email and we will create an itinerary together to suit you

Transportation Options

There are multiple transportation options to reach Positano from Sorrento. Below, we’ll go over the ferry companies, direct bus connections, private boats, and private and rental cars.

The most scenic way to travel to Positano from Sorrento is by booking ferry tickets with ferry companies. Some popular operators that run ferries on this route are Positano Jet , Lucibello, Seremar, Alilauro , etc.

A major advantage of using the ferry service is its accessibility. There are multiple departures every day in the high season (April to October), making it a really quick way to get to the other city as fast as possible.

Ferry from Athens to Mykonos

INSIDER TIP: We recommend that you book a high-speed ferry that only takes 20 minutes to reach Positano from Sorrento. It’s a bit more expensive, but it goes really fast, and you still get to see the Amalfi Coast from your ferry seat.

You can book your tickets here , Omio gives the options for all the tour operators and automatically puts the lowest prices on top. We love using them as they are mobile-friendly and the app is easy to use.

WHY do we prefer the high speed ferry option?

Going by car or bus means you have to take winding roads in the hills (we prefer not to be car sick) and might be stuck in traffic as Italy is known for its traffic congestion.

Ferry SCHEDULE

Generally, ferries operate more during the peak season, which runs from April to October. You can see the ferry schedule HERE . During this period, you can expect several departures throughout the day, allowing for flexibility in your travel plans. However, always check the latest information, as weather conditions might ruin the day trip.

Private Boat

Renting a boat in Sorrento to go to Positano is the most LUXURY and SPECIAL way to enjoy the beautify of Italy’s coast, including views of Mount Vesuvius. It is an adventurous and scenic way to enjoy the beauty of Italy’s Amalfi Coast.

The cost of renting a boat in Sorrento can vary depending on the type of boat you choose and the duration of your rental. On average, you can expect to pay around $105 per hour . For a FULL DAY, prices may range from $356.19 to $389.59. This might seem expensive, but if you are with a couple of friends, you can split the cost.

If you’re looking to rent a SAILBOAT , it might cost around $925 per day, while a MOTORBOAT could set you back about $885 per day. In Positano, the average cost of renting a boat is around $1,200 per day. Expensive for sure, but a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Where to Rent:

There are several places where you can rent a boat in Sorrento, but we recommend using Viator.

License and Other Requirements:

As long as you use a small boat with a small engine, you do NO NEED A LICENSE. The organisation will give you a 15-minute explanation and then it’s up to you!

renting a boat

A direct bus service is another good option if you want to reach Positano from Sorrento.

The journey takes approximately 45-60 minutes , depending on traffic conditions, of course. Keep in mind that the roads along the Amalfi Coast are narrow and winding, so the bus ride can be quite an adventure in itself! Be sure to take some medication for road sickness.

Bus tickets range from €2 to €5 per person for a one-way trip , making it the most cost-effective choice compared to other transportation options.

In Sorrento, the bus terminal is located near the Circumvesuviana train station , making it easily accessible for those arriving by train.

In POSITANO, there are two main bus stops: one at the top of the hill (Chiesa Nuova) and another further down towards the town center (Sponda) .

Italy bus

Private Car/renting a car

Having your own car offers several advantages over the other modes of transportation.

Some key benefits include:

Flexibility: Unlike public transportation, having your own car gives you a lot more flexibility.

Car rental in Italy

Comfort and luxury: Private transfers typically offer well-maintained, air-conditioned, and spacious vehicles, ensuring a pleasant and relaxed journey along the Amalfi Coast. Professional drivers are knowledgeable about the local area and can provide valuable insights or recommendations for your trip.

To book a private transfer from Sorrento to Positano, it’s best you use DiscoverCars , which is one of the biggest online platforms in Europe, almost all car companies are featured on their website!

However, there are some practical aspects to consider before choosing to rent a car for this journey:

Driving conditions: The roads along the Amalfi Coast are narrow, winding, and often congested, especially during peak season. Drivers should be confident and experienced in navigating challenging road conditions.

Parking availability: Parking spaces in Sorrento, Positano, and other towns along the coast can be limited and expensive. It’s essential to factor in parking fees and the potential difficulty of finding a spot when planning your trip.

Potential challenges: In addition to driving conditions and parking, be prepared for potential challenges such as steep hills, tight turns, and local driving customs, which may differ from what you’re used to.

Sorrento Taxi

Choosing the right option

It’s always difficult to choose the right option. If you have gotten this far, you know that we prefer to book a high-speed ferry to get us from Sorrento to Positano.

If you are still unsure about the choice, look at our recommendations below.

Cost: Even though the bus ride might be cheaper than a ferry, you still have to pass the winding roads in the hills, which can make you road sick. Ferries, on the other hand, are not like normal boats that feel every wave and can make you seasick. These ferries are built to be stable.

Sorrento car rental

Travel time: Evaluate the time you have available for your trip and take into account the duration of each transport option. Ferries and private transfers often offer faster travel times compared to buses, but schedules and traffic conditions can influence the overall journey time.

Desired experience: Think about the type of travel experience you’re seeking. If you enjoy scenic views and a relaxed atmosphere, a ferry ride might be ideal. For those who prefer a budget-friendly option and don’t mind navigating public transportation, buses could be suitable. Alternatively, if you value flexibility, convenience, and personalized service, a private transfer or car rental may be the best choice.

Positano View

To conclude, getting from Sorrento to Positano may seem adventurous at first, but it’s actually quite simple with a variety of transportation options available.

Whether you choose to take a ferry, a bus, or a car, you’ll get to experience the beauty of southern Italy as you make your way to the beautiful city of Positano.

Don’t forget to take in the stunning views of the Amalfi Coast along the way!

6 Best Things To Do in Amalfi Coast

Updated Feb. 6, 2024

The Amalfi Coast can be seen and experienced a number of ways. Adventure travelers wanting to work up a sweat can traverse the many scenic hiking trails that snake through the region. Those strictly seeking relaxation can find solace at one of the

Positano Positano free

If you only have time to visit one town in the Amalfi Coast, it should be Positano. Positano is everything you'd dream the Amalfi Coast to be; lush cascading cliffs stacked with colorful Mediterranean architecture, luxury yachts and speed boats docked on turquoise waters, and narrow streets and ornate stairways lined with boutiques and trattorias. And of all the towns on the coast, Positano caters to visitors the most, offering up the most hotels of any destination in the region. What's more, Sita buses and ferries stop directly in Positano and many Amalfi Coast boat tours depart from here.

Positano also boasts some of the Amalfi Coast's most beloved beaches . Marina Grande Beach is the most famous and most central, sitting at the base of the colorful seaside town. There's also the Fornillo Beach, another traveler favorite, located less than a half-mile east of Marina Grande Beach. Fornillo Beach can be accessed directly from Marina Grande via the cliffside Sentiero degli Innamorati pathway, an attraction in its own right. For a truly secluded shoreline, check out Arienzo Beach, which is situated between two cliffs and is accessible via a 300-step stairway.

Amalfi Coast Hiking Amalfi Coast Hiking free

Though the Amalfi Coast is the kind of place where you should kick back, relax and soak up the stunning scenery, you'd be missing out on all it has to offer if you didn't make room for a little adventure in your itinerary. In between the coast's various towns are a plethora of beautiful pathways and trails begging for further exploration. Though you can easily admire the sea from the many cliffside hotels, restaurants and lookout points that dot the region, getting up close and personal with the natural elements of Amalfi's spectacular terrain can't be missed.

There are a bevy of hikes that vary in length and difficulty. One of the most popular pathways is the Il Vallone delle Ferriere, an almost 4-mile trail that snakes through a wooded area found just atop the town of Amalfi near Ravello. The path is lauded by travelers for its picturesque setting: think fern-lined streams, cascading waterfalls and ruins of medieval foundries and paper mills, the latter of which Amalfi is widely known for producing. For more coastal views, seek out La Baia di Ieranto, a 4-mile journey considered moderate in difficulty. Located in the small fishing village of Nerano, this trek on the tip of the peninsula takes visitors to the Bay of Ieranto, passing through a sea of lush, Mediterranean shrub along the way. From the Bay of Ieranto, travelers can see the nearby island of Capri and venture down to the pebble beach of Ieranto Bay. There's also the Il Sentiero degli Dei, otherwise known as the Path of the Gods (once you reach the top of the peak, you'll understand why it's earned such a grand title). This 5-mile-long journey nestled in Positano hugs Amalfi cliffs, offering truly unforgettable views of the seemingly never-ending coastline. You can also catch a bird's-eye view of Positano where the path eventually terminates.

Amalfi Coast Beaches Amalfi Coast Beaches free

A trip to any coastal destination wouldn't be complete without a trip to the beach. In the case of the Amalfi Coast, your vacation wouldn't be complete without visiting multiple beaches. One of the things that makes this region so unique is the sheer amount of beaches found here (100, to be exact). Due to the topography of the Amalfi Coast, long, sandy beaches are nonexistent. Instead, travelers will be greeted with beaches consisting of pebbles or just a rocky platform over the water.

Positano 's Marina Grande Beach is a great place to start since it's located smack dab in the middle of the town, with Positano's famous colorful, cliffside buildings towering over both sides of the shore. The beach is also one of Amalfi's biggest, measuring nearly 985 feet in length. Another popular spot for tourists is Arienzo Beach, also located in Positano. Arienzo is much smaller than Marina Grande and more secluded. Situated between two cliffs, travelers must descend a 300-step stairway to reach the beach. Though some admitted it was a bit of a trek, many travelers liked this beach because it was the opposite of Marina Grande; more peaceful and less crowded. If you're looking for something a little bigger, but still want a sense of seclusion, travelers say Fornilla Beach is your best option.

Villa Cimbrone (Ravello) Villa Cimbrone (Ravello)

If you're looking to take in spectacular views without breaking too much of a sweat, head to Villa Cimbrone. Situated in the mountaintop town of Ravello, Villa Cimbrone is a luxury hotel lauded by both experts and recent visitors for its gorgeous on-site gardens. The property's gardens are considered one of the most important examples of English landscape and botany culture in the south of Europe, housing a handful of rare botanic species. And with the exception of a few trees, all of the plants that live within the garden's grounds are estimated to be about 100 years old.

As such, you can expect vegetation of all kinds along your walk, including roses, hydrangeas and chestnut trees, to name a few. Along with beautiful botany, travelers are also greeted with equally stunning architecture. Though, the star attraction within the gardens has to be the Terrace of Infinity. This terrace, lined with busts, features unobstructed panoramas of the ocean, along with picture-perfect views of Amalfi's cascading cliffs from both directions.

To explore Amalfi by land is only half of the experience. The best views are seen from the ocean, where unobstructed vistas of the coast's world-renowned cliffs, as well as the gorgeous vegetation and colorful architecture, can be admired. The most cost-effective way to experience Amalfi by sea is by taking a ferry. Ferries run from April 1 to Oct. 31 annually, with one of the most trafficked routes, Sorrento to Positano to Amalfi, starting in mid-May. Sorrento to Positano takes about 40 minutes, while Amalfi to Positano takes about 20 minutes. There is also a ferry service that goes directly to Capri (a traveler favorite) and takes close to an hour to reach. Ticket prices vary depending on the port of departure, but are typically less than 20 euros (about $23) for a one-way journey.

If you're looking to take a tour rather than just get from point A to point B, there are plenty of outfitters in Amalfi offering short cruises, semiprivate small group tours and private boat rentals. In fact, an Amalfi Coast boat tour is among our best Italy tours . Shorter cruises are by far the most affordable option, averaging about 35 to 40 euros (about $39 to $44) for a trip. Though if you're looking to treat yourself, a private boat tour with a skipper tends to start around 150 euros (about $168) for a two to three-hour trip. The average Amalfi tour stops at various points of interest on the coast, including the fjord of Furore, the Emerald Grotto, the islets of Li Galli and the bays of Arienzo and Laurito, to name a few. Some even stop at villages and allow for time on shore. Among the more affordable companies is Positano Boats . For 50 euros (About $56), the Amalfi Coast tour takes visitors to popular spots on the coast, including the Furore Fiordo , Emerald Grotto and the waterfalls of Marmorata. Though some of these excursions can be pricey, many travelers agreed that this is the best way to see the coast. For more information about boat tours, visit the Positano Tourism Board's website .

Fiordo di Furore Fiordo di Furore free

The Amalfi Coast is filled with so many secluded beaches it's nearly impossible to pinpoint where exactly all of them are, let alone allot enough time to get to them. But if you were to choose just one, you should make it to the Fiordo di Furore, considered one of the most interesting geological features on the Amalfi Coast. The Amalfi Highway connects the two sides of the fjord via a bridge, acting as both the beach's main focal point and its point of access. From there, travelers can descend stairs that cascade down the gorge's stony cliffs and either take a dip, admire the surrounding scenery or explore the other trails situated at the beach. One trail takes visitors farther along the cliffs, leading to direct views of the ocean, while another opposite the beach leads explorers into an old fishing village and a series of paper mills. The town of Furore is located just above the gorge and is also accessible via a trail.

Many recent visitors found the attraction to be nothing short of picturesque, and those who did visit during the warmer months thoroughly enjoyed swimming in the turquoise waters. What's more, many reported that despite its popularity, the beach wasn't overrun with tourists. And though some found it difficult to get to (citing the lack of parking and steep stairs as hinderances), most said it was completely worth it, with some travelers calling it the highlight of their Amalfi trip.
