3. FWD Travel Insurance

FWD travel insurance offers some of the cheapest travel insurance plans in Singapore, so this is a budget-friendly option which still offers you great value for every dollar. I like that coverage for emergency medical evacuation is unlimited for all tiers, and overseas medical expenses go up to a generous $1,000,000.

Here’s a quick run-through of the price and benefits offered by FWD travel insurance plans:

When you’re purchasing FWD travel insurance, the COVID-19 benefits are an add-on. The price of the COVID-19 add-on costs between $11 to $22  depending on the part of the world you’re travelling to. If you choose to add it on, it’ll give you comprehensive coverage of the following:

  • Trip disruption
  • Trip cancellation
  • Overseas hospital cash
  • Hospital cash while in Singapore
  • Medical expenses
  • Emergency medical evacuation and repatriation

The plan reimburses your travel-related expenses if you are diagnosed with COVID-19 no more than 30 days before your scheduled departure date, or if you have to change your itinerary because of a COVID-19 diagnosis while overseas. You also get to claim medical expenses and a hospital cash benefit if you get hospitalised overseas or for up to 14 days in Singapore upon your return.

On top of that, there’s also an automatic policy extension of up to 21 days should you be prevented from travel as per foreign government regulations due to:

  • You contracting COVID-19; or
  • You or your travel companion needing to be self-isolated due to being in close contact with someone diagnosed with COVID-19

4. Starr Travel Insurance

Starr’s travel insurance   Starr TraveLead Comprehensive is a leader in terms of how customisable their insurance is. When signing up, medical coverage (including COVID-19 coverage) is automatically included in all plans, but you can choose whether or not you want to add trip coverage (e.g. document loss, travel delay) and baggage coverage (e.g. baggage delay). Then, you can also easily add riders for Golf Protection, Cruise Vacation, Scuba Diving, and Snow Sports.

Starr TraveLead Comprehensive comes in 3 tiers: Gold , Silver and Bronze . While all are pretty comprehensive (as the name suggests), we advise you go for at least Silver . This affords you $500,000 overseas medical coverage, as well as $30,000 medical coverage for COVID-19 and $250 coverage for COVID-19 related trip curtailments and cancellations. You won’t get the COVID-19 trip curtailment/cancellation coverage in the Bronze plan, which only offers $15,000 for COVID-19 medical coverage. Better be safe and  go for Silver or Gold.

Here are the prices and coverage amounts for each tier. Prices are given with trip coverage included in the plan.

Note: Starr also has a travel insurance called Starr TraveLead Essential, which also comes in Bronze , Silver and Gold tiers. They look very attractive because of their low prices—for example, Starr TraveLead Essential Bronze costs just $20 for a 7-day trip to an ASEAN destination.

However, unless you’re on a really tight budget, I wouldn’t recommend these plans because of their more limited coverage. For example, while the Starr TraveLead Essential Bronze plan does cover you for $200,000 worth of overseas medical expenses (which is already the bare minimum), it doesn’t cover you at all for trip cancellation and loss/damage of baggage. Neither do the Silver or Gold tier plans.

5. MSIG Travel Insurance

MSIG travel insurance is categorised into 3 plans— Standard , Elite , and Premier . The cheapest, basic plan still offers pretty adequate coverage in medical emergencies and trip cancellations or delays.

Here’s a quick run-down of the plan’s key benefits:

One more unusual area of coverage that MSIG includes is emergency dental expenses. You get $5,000 to $15,000 in coverage, depending on the travel insurance tier you select.

MSIG’s Areas A and B refer, roughly speaking, to ASEAN and Asia respectively. Here’s a more comprehensive list of the countries in each category:

  • Area A : Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam
  • Area B : Australia, China (excluding Inner Mongolia and Tibet), Hong Kong, India, Japan, Korea, Macau, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and including countries in Area A
  • Area C : Worldwide

MSIG Travel Insurance’s COVID-19 coverage is an automatic inclusion to its travel insurance plans and offers the following coverage:

  • Trip cancellation, postponement, shortening, disruption
  • Replacement of traveller
  • Overseas medical expenses
  • Emergency medical evacuation
  • Overseas quarantine daily cash allowance

This is quite a decent list of benefits, but do note that daily hospital cash allowance is missing from the list.

6. Singlife Travel Insurance

Singlife travel insurance comes in 3 tiers— Lite , Plus , and Prestige . The price you pay and the coverage you’ll get increase with each plan.

Here are Singlife travel insurance’s key prices and benefits:

On top of the coverage above, Singlife also covers you for chiropractor and/or Chinese physician treatment : $250 ($50 per visit) for Lite, $500 ($75 per visit) for Plus, and $1000 ($100 per visit) for Prestige.

As far as COVID-19 coverage goes, here’s a quick run-down:

  • Emergency medical evacuation, repatriation
  • Overseas quarantine allowance
  • Trip cancellation, postponement, interruption

While Singlife travel insurance’s coverage for non-COVID medical expenses, travel delay and trip cancellation is comprehensive, we have to dock some points for the lack of overseas hospital cash allowance and pretty low COVID-19 trip cancellation coverage.

Also, do note that the lowest tier, Lite, doesn’t come with certain coverage, such as trip cancellation or postponement for any reason and COVID-19 overseas quarantine allowance.

7. Etiqa Travel Insurance

Do you hate making travel insurance claims? I do. That’s why when a friend of mine told me that you don’t need to make any claim on Etiqa to receive compensation for your flight delay, I was very intrigued.

I’ve been fortunate—all my recent flights have left on time. But from what I’ve heard from friends who weren’t as lucky on their recent travels, it’s true that Etiqa has the most seamless claim process for flight delays . All you need to do is enter your flight details when purchasing your insurance. Etiqa will monitor your flight and know if your flight is delayed (to count as a delay, it needs to be pushed back at least 3 consecutive hours). If that happens, they’ll transfer money into your Etiqa TiqConnect eWallet—even if you don’t submit a claim! You can then encash that sum via PayNow.

On top of this travel delay claim benefit, Etiqa also provides flight check-in reminders and baggage belt collection details via SMS when you land. I experienced this myself when I bought Etiqa’s travel insurance for my trip to the UK this year. Now that’s what I call service.

Etiqa’s travel insurance is called Tiq Travel Insurance  and comes in 3 tiers: Tiq Entry , Tiq Savvy , and Tiq Luxury . Here are their costs and coverage components:

Tiq Entry is sufficient to give you essential coverage for travel disruptions. But if you’ve just a little more to spend, go for Tiq Savvy . This will more than double your coverage limit for overseas medical expenses from $200,000 to $500,000 for just an additional $5 a week—that’s less than $1 a day.

Covers Cruise to Nowhere

Get paid upon a 3-hour flight delay, even without submitting a claim

Instant claims encashment via PayNow

24-hour worldwide emergency travel support

The only disadvantage to Tiq travel insurance is that COVID-19 coverage is not included in the base price and you’ll have to pay for their optional  COVID-19 Add-On to be covered. Some people might say this is an advantage—it gives you a greater degree of flexibility to decide if you want to have COVID-19 coverage or not, especially as COVID-19 becomes less and less prevalent. However, the fact remains that you need to pay extra for it compared to travel insurance plans where COVID-19 coverage is already included.

Here’s how much the COVID-19 Add-On will cost for a 7-day trip:

Costs are based on quotes generated on Etiqa at time of publishing.

To be covered for travel disruptions and medical expenses related to COVID-19, you’ll need to add the costs above to the base Tiq travel insurance prices.

8. Cheapest travel insurance in Singapore

When I buy travel insurance, I don’t really care whether the insurer has 900 years of experience or if the plan comes with extra coverage for Chanel bags. Just give me the cheapest travel insurance plan can  l iao !

If that sounds like you too, you’ll be glad to know we’ve done the legwork for you. After assessing the most popular travel insurers in Singapore, the honour of cheapest travel insurance in Singapore goes to… FWD travel insurance .

FWD Premium

Optional add on coverage available for pre-existing Medical Conditions for Single Trips plans (up to 30 days) with S$50,000 coverage for medical expenses incurred overseas and 50% co-payment for trip cancellation, postponement and more!

But as the old saying goes, you get what you pay for. Will you regret being a cheapskate and lose out on important coverage if the only number you look at is the price?

In a way, yes. Because FWD travel insurance is only the cheapest option with 2 caveats.

Firstly, travel insurers have limited-time discounts all the time. This is no secret. It does, however, make it difficult to compare prices when an expensive plan is on 40% off but a cheaper one is on 10% off. That’s why for the table above, we compared base prices without discounts .

But when you take into account promotional prices, which plan is the cheapest? There’s no need to open a million tabs to compare every travel insurance plan out there. Just use our travel insurance comparison tool  with the “Lowest Price” filter on. You’re welcome!

The second caveat is this: FWD came out the cheapest when we looked at its price  without its COVID-19 add-on. If you’re looking for a travel insurance plan that includes coverage for disruptions due to COVID-19 (which you should!), the real winners are  Amex travel insurance and  Singlife travel insurance .

Singlife Travel Lite

Covers trip interruptions or cancellations due to COVID-19 and cover your medical treatment should you contract COVID-19 whilst overseas.

Covers rental vehicle excess up to S$500.

Payout of S$50** should your trip be affected by excessive rainfall.

At the end of the day, ask yourself what specific travel insurance coverage you want to have, and assess the travel insurance options to find one that suits your needs.

Need some help? Read our travel insurance guide to understand all you need to know about choosing the best travel insurance. Don’t forget to use our travel insurance comparison tool to seamlessly compare plans across different providers in Singapore. We also have a comparison tool for travel insurance in Hong Kong !

9. Does travel insurance cover COVID-19?

When the COVID-19 pandemic started, most insurers did not extend their coverage to COVID-19-related mishaps. (Read more here .) The pandemic was quickly considered a “known event”, which insurers usually do not offer compensation for. So, if your flight got cancelled because of COVID-19, you’d be out of luck trying to get your insurance claims approved.

Now that practically all travel restrictions are lifted, insurance companies are rushing for a slice of the pie. Since the virus looks like it’s here to stay, most insurers are offering coverage that includes specific benefits for COVID-19. Where COVID-19 benefits aren’t already included in the policy, insurers offer an optional COVID-19 rider you can pay for to add on to the existing regular coverage.

Read your policy documents carefully to see if COVID-19 is covered, and add it on if you need to.

10. How do I choose the best travel insurance with COVID-19 coverage?

COVID-19 coverage  can vary quite a bit from insurer to insurer . When you’re shopping for the best insurance policy,  there are 4 things you want to look out for when it comes to choosing the best travel insurance with COVID-19 coverage:

  • Medical expenses coverage

Do note that the plans still exclude travelling against a travel advisory put in place by the Singapore government or by the local authority at your trip destination. Meaning, if your destination country goes on red alert for COVID-19, visitors are highly likely to come into contact with the virus and your insurance is highly likely to reject any COVID-19 claims. So be sure to check announcements on both ends before you depart.

Another common exclusion is failing to take precautions against COVID-19. This is worded kinda vaguely in those lengthy insurance policies, but could include not following any COVID-19 regulations at your destination or on the plane. So make sure you wear your mask whenever it’s required (or even when it’s not, if you want to play extra safe) and don’t attend any illegal raves.

11. What do I do if I get COVID-19 during or after my travels?

First of all, when booking your trip, you should retain all receipts, tickets and itineraries in case your trip has to be cancelled or altered.

At the first sign of a COVID-19 infection or related travel disruption, you should call your insurer and ask for guidance. Many insurers maintain a 24-hour hotline for travel claims. Save that number before you depart Singapore so that you aren’t stuck somewhere without wi-fi or 4G to Google the hotline.

To make a claim , you will usually have to submit your insurer’s form with supporting documents by the deadline mentioned in your contract (usually 30 days). Don’t wait until you’re back in Singapore to check which documents you need.

If you catch COVID-19 while you’re in Singapore , you will likely have to submit the results of a PCR Swab Test or Antigen Rapid Test conducted at a clinic or hospital.

It gets a bit more complicated if you’re overseas . The insurer will likely require documentation from the hospital as well as a doctor’s letter stating that you are unfit to travel and/or recommending treatment.

If you need to be quarantined overseas , you should make sure you have a quarantine order from the government, otherwise you may not be able to claim for quarantine allowance. Remember to ask for this as not all countries automatically issue such documentation.

What Do Travel Insurance Plans Cover?

While pricing is a an important factor when comparing travel insurance plans, other features such as overseas medical coverage, trip cancellation coverage and many other related aspects are as important. These benefits and the extent of coverage for each type of benefit usually varies from insurer to insurer. Here are a few aspects you’ll want to look out for when it comes to choosing a suitable travel insurance with adequate coverage .

Overseas medical expenses

In the event you get diagnosed with some sort of unexpected disease, you’ll be able to claim for the necessary and reasonable overseas medical costs incurred within a certain number of days of your trip (usually 90 days) up to the limit as specified according to your selected plan. For some plans there are also tiered coverage limits for different age groups.

In-hospital cash overseas or allowance

Reimbursements for in terms of cash for hospital stays is another benefit that many insurers include in their plans now, especially after the Covid-19 pandemic.

Emergency medical evacuation and emergency medical repatriation

This is one of the fundamental aspects of every coverage plan. Any costs incurred for emergency medical evacuation and repatriation (including repatriation of mortal remains back to Singapore) that are related to your severe injury/illness diagnosis will be covered.

Keep in mind to have someone on your behalf to contact the insurer’s emergency service to provide your full name, dates of trip, NRIC/FIN number, policy number, name of the place and the telephone number that your insurance provider can reach you, as well as the nature of help required during the emergency, in case you are unable to do so during the emergency.

Trip cancellation/alteration/interruption/delay

Trip cancellations, postponements, delays, and interruptions are often covered if you as the traveller or you relatives travelling with you are diagnosed with a severe illness/get severely injured before the date of departure, subject to terms and conditions.

Pre-existing conditions

This benefit is not commonly included in most travel insurance plans, but currently there are several insurers providing such plans and they include MSIG TravelEasy® Pre-Ex, Income Insurance Enhanced PreX® (formally known as Income) and Etiqa Pre-Ex. The premiums are higher than regular plans, but they provide overseas medical expenses that cover pre-existing conditions.

Does Travel Insurance Cover Cancelled Flights?

Not always! While all travel insurance policies have a "Trip Cancellation" benefit, you can only claim for this if it's for an insured event, such as a serious illness or accident, or unforeseen events such as riots or natural disasters. However, different insurers exclude different scenarios, so it's best to read the policy wording carefully. The following are types of flight cancellations that are NOT covered by travel insurance.

Flight Cancellation Due to Known Event

Flight cancellations due to events which are already made known as public knowledge are not covered by travel insurance, as you are expected to have known about these at the point of buying your tickets. However, if you bought your flights and activated your travel insurance before they became public knowledge, you might still be able to make a claim.

Flight Cancellation with Refund / Replacement

If your flight was cancelled but you were put on a replacement flight, or your fare was refunded, you will not be able to make a travel insurance claim under the trip cancellation benefit. In general, travel insurance is only for unrecoverable costs. However, you may claim for trip delay benefits, such as an extra night's accommodation or extra meals.

You Cancelled Your Own Flight / Trip

Travel insurance typically covers insured events that are beyond your control. If you are the one who changed your mind about your trip, you generally won't be able to claim anything - unless your insurer offers a "Cancellation for Any Reason" benefit. However, in public health emergencies like the COVID-19 outbreak, airlines usually waive the usual penalties for flight cancellations, out of goodwill.

Different Types Of Travel Insurance Coverage

Single trip plans.

If you’re thinking of only taking one or two trips in a year, single-trip travel insurance is probably more suitable for you. As the name suggests, single-trip insurance plans are made for individual travellers, and those who are travelling as families, who need travel coverage for a single trip or holiday, especially for long overseas trips (usually up to 180 days).

It makes more economic sense for those who don't travel very often, plus, single-trip insurance plans can be purchased easily online, with less time in planning and consideration as compared to annual multi-trip plans. But on the flip side, you’ll face the hassle of getting a new travel insurance policy every time you go on an overseas trip. For some, a single-trip insurance plan can get relatively expensive if the trips are short.

Annual Multi-trip plans

Annual travel insurance plans, which are also known as multi-trip travel insurance plans, are designed for those who travel several times in a year. The great thing about this kind of travel insurance is that you only need to do the purchase once, and you’re covered for the next 12 months. It is a good option if you’re a frequent traveller who intends to make many long trips or short weekend getaways abroad in a year.

Individual plans

Going solo as an occasional traveller or frequent traveller means that you’ll most likely need a single-trip individual travel insurance plan or an annual multi-trip travel insurance plan, depending on the frequency of travel.

Family plans

Family travel insurance plans usually cover you and the members of your family who travel with you on your trip, with a maximum number of adults and children to be insured per policy purchased. The people who are insured under a family travel insurance plan may comprise of you and your spouse, and/or your children or grandchildren.

You may want to consider purchasing a family travel insurance plan if you are travelling with your family and thinking of getting a single policy for your family members who are travelling with you, as getting a family travel insurance plan can be more cost-effective than getting separate single trip plans for each family member. What if you and your loved ones are travelling very often as a family? Some travel insurers also offer annual multi-trip travel insurance for families who are frequent travellers.

Single-trip or Annual multi-trip plan - Which one should you pick?

Now that we've detailed out what the different types of travel insurance plans are, it’ll be easier for you to make a decision. If not, here are some examples to help you understand better.

Joshua flies frequently in and out of the country for his business trips. As he works as a legal advisor, his job requires him to travel between Singapore and Thailand twice or once a month. Each trip will last for about a week. In this case, multi-trip travel insurance works best for him as he wouldn't have to keep getting travel insurance before every trip.

Lisa and Amanda are university friends planning to take a long post-graduation trip to Australia. They seldom travel and even if they did, they go on overseas vacations once a year with their own families. For them, the single travel insurance policy is a more suitable choice Australia .

How Do I Choose The Best Travel Insurance?

When choosing travel insurance plans for your holiday or business trips, there are several factors to consider, depending on your priorities. Here are four simple steps to pick a suitable travel insurance plan.

Check general coverage

Instead of deciding solely by price, you should compare the benefits and reimbursement limits for common claims like medical expenses, trip cancellations, flight delays and baggage theft and/or damage.

Compare policy premiums

How much your travel insurance costs depends on your destination and length of stay. Most travel insurance companies have 2 to 3 tiers of plans at different price points, with varying comprehensiveness and reimbursement limits.

Special activities coverage

The breadth of coverage needed largely depends on your itinerary. For instance, if you’re planning to go skydiving, make sure you get a policy that covers aerial sports like MSIG’s TravelEasy® Standard, Elite and Premier plans. Or if you’re going golfing overseas, pick a policy that insures your equipment.

Consider the trip duration

This is one of the important determining factors of which kind of travel insurance you get. Single trip travel insurance plans are usually for short trips. If you’re the kind who travels far and for months, it might be worthwhile to consider buying annual travel insurance.

Unlike single trip travel insurance, annual travel insurance often charges a flat premium and insures you for an entire year of travel. It usually costs about $200 to $300 per year, which is more suitable for a frequent traveller who is probably going to travel overseas more than 7 or 8 times a year, at least.

Travel Insurance Claims

How do travel claims work.

Before you make a claim from your travel insurance provider, there are several important things to take note of, whether it is for claims related to your COVID-19 diagnosis, loss of baggage, trip cancellation, or other reasons. These include knowing what type of plan you purchased, when did the incident/illness occur (pre-trip, during-trip or post-trip), what belongings or items to claim for, and who are involved.

Here are 3 simple steps to submit your travel insurance claim

Get your supporting documents ready.

Most travel insurers require claims within 30 days. Submit via mail, WhatsApp, their app, or online portal to avoid policy breaches. Keep originals for 6 months in the event the travel insurance provider needs to sight them. Required documents often include personal info, medical reports, ownership proof, trip records, and reports (e.g., police, airline).

Fill in your details and attach your supporting documents in your submission

Log in to your insurer's claims app or portal. Fill in your info, and the necessary details for the claims (email address. policy number, departure date or policy purchase date), upload soft copies of your documents and submit. Alternatively, mail hard copies of your original documents.

Receive an acknowledgement email and await for settlement

After submitting, you'll receive an acknowledgment email. Your claim will be reviewed. For COVID-19-related claims, contact the provided hotline or email. Upon approval, your insurer will coordinate payments, often offering cashless reimbursement through PayNow or iBanking for speed and convenience.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is travel insurance and how does it help me, what's the difference between single-trip or annual multi-trip travel insurance.

When you buy travel insurance you can choose from 2 types of policies, either the single trip or annual multi-trip travel insurance plan. Single trip travel insurance covers you for a single trip and is usually for individual travellers, or those who are travelling as families, who need travel coverage for a single trip or holiday, especially for long overseas trips (usually up to 180 days).

Annual travel insurance plans, which are also known as multi-trip travel insurance plans, cover you for all trips starting and ending in Singapore, and are designed for those who travel several times in a year, each trip lasting for about less than 180 days. You should consider buying Annual Travel Insurance if you travel frequently (more than 10 times a year). You will enjoy significant savings, and you won't have to worry about purchasing travel insurance every single time as you’ll be covered for the entire year.

Your questions answered

(Applicable for Elite and Classic single trip 2-way plans and annual multi-trip plans, each trip must not exceed 90 days.)

If you are purchasing a new policy, we have extended the TravelSmart Premier policy to cover certain situations pertaining to COVID-19. This means that for some benefits, cover is expanded to include losses occurring after COVID-19 was a known event and could reasonably have been expected to lead to a claim. For a detailed summary of what is covered or not covered for COVID-19, please refer to the policy wording.

Before purchasing the policy, please note that: • Your Trip is under the latest permitted travel arrangement as per Singapore Government travel advisory. • For single-trip policies and annual multi-trip policies, the extension only applies if the trip is no longer than 90 days in a row. • The extension is applicable to Elite and Classic plans only. • You are not serving stay home notice or quarantined due to COVID-19 or traveled to any countries other than the list of countries permitted as per Singapore Government travel advisory within 14 days before your trip started. • If required by authorities, you must take a COVID-19 Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test or any COVID-19 equivalent test approved by Singapore authorities within 72 hours before the start of your trip and you must be tested negative. Otherwise, there is no cover under section 38a - Medical expenses while overseas, section 38b - Emergency medical evacuation, section 38c - Repatriation, section 38g - Automatic extension of cover, section 38h – Overseas quarantine allowance and section 38i - Overseas hospital allowance of this extension. • We will not cover if you, a relative, or a travel companion is diagnosed (or suspected of being infected) with Covid-19 at the point of purchase of this policy or trip.

Q1: What are the benefits provided for COVID-19 cover?

Please refer to the table below for COVID-19 coverage:

Q2: Where can I find details on the latest permitted travel arrangements issued by the Singapore government?

For the latest permitted travel arrangements issued by the Singapore government, please visit ICA Safe Travel website at  https://safetravel.ica.gov.sg/ .

Q3: If the destination that I am going to has been suspended from the latest permitted travel arrangement as per the Singapore authorities, will I still be covered for the COVID-19 extension if I proceed with the trip?

No, the COVID-19 extension is only applicable if your trip is under the permitted travel arrangements as per the Singapore Government travel advisory at the point of your trip commencement.

Q4: If I have already departed for my trip before the permitted travel arrangement was suspended by the Singapore authorities, will I still be covered for the COVID-19 extension?

Yes, you will still be covered under the COVID-19 extension in view that the permitted travel arrangement was suspended after you have departed for your trip.

Q5: Will the policy cover my loss if I need to cancel my trip due to being diagnosed with COVID-19?

We will pay for any non-recoverable travel, accommodation expenses and/or cost of entertainment tickets that were paid in advance due to the cancellation of your trip if you are diagnosed with COVID-19 in Singapore within 30 days prior to the scheduled departure date of your trip. Please note that reimbursement of any travel and/or accommodation expenses redeemed using mileage points, holiday points or any reward schemes is excluded. If the policy is purchased less than seven days before your departure date, the Trip Cancellation benefit will only apply upon death due to COVID-19.

Q6: Will the policy cover my loss if I need to postpone my trip due to being diagnosed with COVID-19?

We will pay for any non-recoverable administrative charges arising from your travel and accommodation expenses that were paid in advance due to the postponement of your trip if you are diagnosed with COVID-19 in Singapore within 30 days prior to the scheduled departure date of your trip. Q10: Will the policy cover my loss if I am diagnosed with COVID-19 during my trip and as a result, I am unable to continue with the trip?

We will pay up to the sub-limit that applies to your selected plan for the reasonable extra travel expenses or the cost of the unused portion of non-recoverable travel expenses (economy class), accommodation costs and entertainment tickets (for admission to theme parks, musicals, plays, theatre or drama performances, concerts or sports events) that you paid in advance if you are forced to change any part of your trip as a direct result of you, a relative on the same trip, or a travel companion being diagnosed with COVID-19 by a medical practitioner while you are overseas.

Q19: Can I purchase TravelSmart Premier for my child who is traveling on a student exchange program or field trip?

Yes, child below 18 years old can apply for any plans under an individual cover, provided the proposal is made in the parent or adult guardian's name. Child below 10 years old must be accompanied by an adult (parent or guardian) for the entire trip. Please note that child benefits apply.

Q20: Can I purchase travel insurance if I am already overseas?

No, you will need to purchase your travel insurance before setting off for your overseas trip from Singapore. We strongly encourage you to purchase early before departure as our travel insurance provides pre-journey coverage as well.

Q21: If I have pre-existing illness, can I still purchase travel insurance?

Yes, you may still buy the policy. However, please note that the policy does not cover any loss, damage or liability directly or indirectly arising as a result of any pre-existing medical condition. For more information, please refer to your policy documents.

Q22: I will be travelling to more than two countries and will be back to Singapore before flying to the next country (e.g. Singapore > Bangkok > Singapore > Seoul> Singapore). Can I purchase one single trip policy for the entire journey in this case?

Sounds like a great trip! In this case, you will need to buy 2 separate single trip policies because the coverage for a single trip policy ends when you return to Singapore. Alternatively if you travel more than 3 times a year, an annual policy would be recommended as your insurance costs will be considerably cheaper compared to buying a single trip travel policy each and every time.

Q23: I’m travelling to more than one country during my trip. Can I still get a policy?

Yes, please select all destinations on your itinerary.

Q24: If I am travelling overseas to seek medical treatment, can I take up travel insurance?

Our policy covers people who are travelling overseas for business or for holiday. It is not intended to cover people who are travelling to seek medical treatment.

Q25: If I am only travelling one-way, will I be able to purchase travel insurance?

Yes, please select one-way trip. Your cover will cease when you arrive at your place of residence or workplace in the destination country within 4 days, or 3 hours after you have cleared immigration in the destination country, whichever is earlier.

Q26: Does the policy cover business travel?

Yes. Your policy will cover you for business travel except for • any loss, damage or liability arising as a result of manual or hazardous work; • travel relating to your job as a licensed tour guide or staff of a travel agency; • you taking part in naval, military, air force, civil defence or police training, duties, services or operations. For more information, please refer to the policy document.

Q27: What is the maximum period of coverage for an overseas trip?

• For Single Trip Policy: 182 consecutive days for Classic/ Elite Plan and up to 30 consecutive days for Basic Plan. • For an Annual Multi-Trip Policy: 90 consecutive days for Classic/ Elite Plan and up to 30 consecutive days for Basic Plan.

Q28: When will the coverage for my travel policy start?

Our pre-journey benefits provide coverage for trip cancellation and postponement 30 days before your departure date or policy issuance date, whichever is later. For all other benefits, the coverage starts after departure from Singapore.

Q29: I am stranded in a country and my policy is expiring. Can it be extended?

The Policy will be automatically extended (all plans except Basic Plan) without any additional premium for: • Up to a maximum of 30 days if you are hospitalised and quarantined overseas as advised by the attending medical practitioner. • Up to a maximum of 7 days if: a) The conveyance in which you are travelling is delayed through no act or omission of you. b) The airport or seaport is closed due to adverse weather conditions, strike, riot or civil commotion with the result that the Trip is not completed when the Period of Insurance ceases.

Q30: What are some of TravelSmart Premier’s general exclusions?

TravelSmart Premier does not cover any loss, injury or damage arising if: • You have a pre-existing medical condition. • You are not fit to travel or are travelling against the advice of a doctor. • Any strike, riot, civil commotion, dangerous health threat, natural disaster or any events in the destination you are traveling to which a government or any relevant authority issued a public warning or statement about before you left Singapore. You need to report the theft or loss to the police within 24 hours of discovering it, and ask them for a report in writing. 4 Things Your Travel Insurance Does Not Cover

While getting travel insurance before a trip is always the wise thing to do, we present four exclusions that your travel insurance policy may not insure you for.

ValueChampion Editorial Team

by ValueChampion Editorial Team on Jun 10, 2024

flight delay

Singaporeans love to buy a travel insurance policy when planning an overseas business trip or a holiday. For a relatively small amount of money, you can get insurance coverage for a medical emergency, cancellation of your trip, and a host of other events that you can’t plan ahead for.

However, although you may feel secure just because you purchase a policy, there are things that even it won’t cover. People forget that buying an insurance policy is not just about getting the lowest price.

tour guide couple travel

In order to clarify what you can be covered for, the best thing you can do is to comb through the insurance policy’s terms & conditions and read through its fine prints.

However, most people pay very little attention to this document and simply assume that the insurer will pay them for any mishap that occurs on their trip. Nothing could be further from the truth. An insurance claim is payable only if it is explicitly allowed by the terms of the policy.

Below, we list a few situations where you may be ineligible to get reimbursed even though you may think that your claim is absolutely valid.

Related: 3 Reasons to Get Travel Insurance & 3 Questions to Ask Before Getting One

1. medical treatments when you are back in singapore is covered, but not always.

One of the primary reasons for buying travel insurance is the fear of falling seriously ill when you are on a holiday.

doctor a&E 24 hour medical emergency

For certain illnesses in some countries, medical expenses can add up very quickly and you could have end up owing thousands of dollars before you know it. Not only that, in some cases, you may need to continue your medical treatment even when you return to Singapore. Most policies will provide coverage for this kind of occurrences.

However, there is one caveat. Usually, policies require you to visit a doctor in Singapore within a number of days of your return. A failure to make this visit within the stipulated time frame could result in the rejection of your claim.

Related: Travel Insurance — Must-Have or Good-to-Have?

2. you are not covered in certain countries.

What do Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Liberia, Congo, Sudan, and Syria have in common? Your insurer may think that these countries are too dangerous to visit.

Each insurer will have a list of nations where your travel insurance policy is invalid. Intrepid travellers who risk going to the countries on the insurer’s blacklist will have a tough time trying to find a travel insurance policy to provide coverage for them.

3. Why your claim for a cancelled trip could be rejected

It is important to understand that the insurer will reimburse you for your claim only if the reason for cancellation is covered in the insurance contract. For example, if you get serious injuries or illnesses during your trip, you should be able to get proportional reimbursements for your medical expenses. The insurer may also accept your claim for a cancelled trip if your  travel agency goes bankrupt  before you embark on your trip.

airplane docked at an airport

However, there are instances where your claim for a “valid” event can be rejected under circumstances. For example, a travel insurance policy will usually has a list of “general exceptions.” In layman’s terms, this means that the insurer will not bear the loss that arises from any of the conditions listed under this rule.

Although each insurer would have a different list, the reasons for rejecting a claim under this clause would include a visit to a restricted country or a situation where the insured deliberately causes a loss to his own possessions.

One notable of these exceptions is being injured while being under the influence of alcohol and drugs. If you fall and hurt yourself when you are under the influence of alcohol, you may not be eligible for the reimbursement of your medical expenses. Therefore, if your insurance claim is very obviously a result of being intoxicated, the insurer would probably be within its rights to refuse to pay you.

Related: Afraid of Getting Your Travel Insurance Claim Rejected? Take These Precautions

4. look out for the co-payment clause.

Your policy should provide details of your co-payment or excess obligations. What exactly does this mean? If there is a co-payment clause for some of the risks that are covered, you would be required to bear part of the loss.

Say, you have incurred expenses of S$1,000 for cancelling your trip. If the policy specifies 50% co-payment, your claim would be approved only for S$500. Although this is a standard clause in many travel insurance policies, it often comes as a shock to consumers.

Read your policy document carefully

When you purchase travel insurance, it’s not enough to simply scan through the brochures that the insurer prints. If you want to understand the benefits that a travel insurance policy can provide, it is necessary to take out the time to study the contract that you will be entering into with the insurer. By doing this, you will be better prepared if it is necessary to make a claim. You are also less likely to get an unpleasant surprise if your claim is not passed.

Which travel insurance policies cover miles and points bookings?

Aaron Wong

While most travel insurance policies explicitly exclude miles and points bookings, there are a few which offer coverage.

Those of us who collect miles and points will know that they’re as valuable as cash. Even if you’re not explicitly paying for them (e.g. buying miles or hotel points from the loyalty programmes themselves, or via services like CardUp / Citi PayAll ), there’s always an implicit cost involved in earning them (in the sense that you could have swiped a cashback card instead).

The problem is, travel insurers rarely see things the same way. In fact, the vast majority of policies explicitly exclude frequent flyer miles or points.

This means that if a medical or family emergency prevents you from taking your trip, you won’t be able to get a refund of your flight and hotel expenses if they’ve been redeemed with miles and points!

To guard against this, it’s highly advisable that you purchase a travel insurance policy with coverage for miles and points, and we’ll look at the options in Singapore.

Aren’t miles and points bookings refundable?

Miles and points bookings are generally refundable, but there can be situations where you may not be able to get your miles or points back.

It depends on the loyalty programme, as well as when the cancellation is made.

Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer

singapore travel insurance promotion

KrisFlyer’s policies are actually quite lenient. You can cancel your flight anytime up till the scheduled departure time and pay a US$75 (Saver) or US$50 (Advantage) fee per passenger to get all your miles and taxes refunded.

Even if you fail to show up for your flight altogether, you can still get a refund of your miles, subject to paying a no-show fee on top of the refund fee.

However, if you book a Spontaneous Escapes ticket, the rules are different. Spontaneous Escapes awards are strictly non-changeable and non-refundable, so if you can’t fly, you lose your miles. I have heard of anecdotal exceptions, but since that’s the official policy, you shouldn’t go in expecting the same to be granted to you.

Most FFPs allow you to cancel and get a full refund of your miles so long as you do it before the flight departs, but some (e.g. British Airways and Etihad) have stricter policies.

Here’s a summary of the more popular programmes in Singapore:

singapore travel insurance promotion

With hotel loyalty programmes, the cancellation window will vary depending on property. In some cases, it may be 24 hours before arrival, in the case of popular resorts like the Maldives, it may be as much as three months or more.

Cancelling outside this window results in a penalty that is usually charged in cash, not points. With Hilton Honors, Marriott Bonvoy and World of Hyatt, you’ll receive a full refund of your points, but you will need to pay at least the first night’s cash rate, if not more.

Which travel insurance policies cover miles and points?

The way I see it, there’s two main scenarios where your airline/hotel cancellation may fall outside the cancellation window.

  • Trip Cancellation: When a covered event causes you to have to cancel your trip before it begins (e.g. falling sick the day of departure)
  • Trip Curtailment: When a covered event causes you to have to abandon your original trip and return home (e.g. death of a family member mid-way through your trip)

Before we talk about specific policies, here’s a few general pointers to note.

First, compensation can only be claimed if your miles/points are not recoverable . If it’s possible to pay a cancellation fee and get your miles/points back (e.g. Saver or Advantage awards on KrisFlyer), you cannot make a claim for the miles/points under your travel insurance policy (though you may be able to claim the cancellation fee).

Second, your trip must have been cancelled/disrupted for a covered reason . Changing your mind is not valid grounds for a claim, unless you purchase Singlife’s travel insurance policy and make a claim under the “cancel for any reason” clause (which pays you 50% of the expenses incurred, capped at S$5,000 and once per period of insurance).

Third, the general approach that insurers take when valuing miles and points is to look at the  retail value  of the flight ticket or hotel booking. That actually works out in your favour- I’d rather be reimbursed for the cash value of a Business Class ticket than at 1-2 cents per mile!

Fourth, even though cancellation policies are stated in black and white on most airline/hotel websites, most insurers will still require you to contact the loyalty programme and get  written confirmation that your miles/points cannot be refunded. I imagine they do this to minimise their own liability, in the off chance that the loyalty programme decides to grant a one-off exception due to extenuating circumstances.

Miles and points coverage is not a common feature among travel insurance policies in Singapore, but I’ve managed to find several which do.

AMEX My Travel Insurance

AMEX My Travel Insurance, underwritten by Chubb, provides up to S$20,000 of coverage for forfeited loyalty points and miles.

There’s currently an ongoing promotion that offers additional gifts for those who purchase at least a Standard plan, ranging from extra eCapitaVouchers to an Accor Plus Explorer membership.

You’ll receive one gift per plan purchased , and sometimes the value of the gift can be more than the policy (e.g. single day trips to Malaysia).

Applying via The MileLion’s link gets you an extra S$15 eCapitaVoucher per application, on top of any public gifts.

DBS TravellerShield Plus

DBS TravellerShield Plus was recently refreshed to provide up to S$7,500 of coverage for the loss of frequent flyer miles and points. Do note that the cap here is per individual; if you purchase the family plan, the coverage goes up to S$22,500.

Singlife Travel Insurance

Singlife works a little differently. The policy covers the loss of frequent flyer miles and points for the Plus and Prestige tiers, but doesn’t state an explicit value.

Instead, you need to read that section in conjunction with the sections on trip cancellation, in which case the coverage is up to S$20,000,  or trip interruption in which case the coverage is up to S$15,000.

Also note that the Plus and Prestige tiers have a “cancel for any reason” clause that allow you to recoup 50% of the non-recoverable expenses, capped at S$5,000 (Plus) or S$7,500 (Prestige). This is claimable once per period of insurance. In other words, if you’ve booked a trip with miles and points but decide not to travel, and the reason is not a covered reason, you can invoke this clause and get reimbursed for any non-recoverable miles and points.

Applications via SingSaver currently earn you an extra 4 miles per S$1, regardless of which card you pay with. Extra discounts can be enjoyed if you’re an existing MINDEF/MHA/POGIS policyholder; you’ll be prompted for this during the application process.

Klook Protect

Klook Protect, underwritten by Zurich Insurance, is similar to Singlife in that it doesn’t state an explicit amount for loss of frequent flyer miles and points. Instead, you should refer to the sections on travel cancellation, where coverage is up to S$7,500.

Other policies

There are a few other policies on the market which cover the loss of miles and points, but their coverage amounts are so insubstantial I don’t think it’s worth the effort to list them out in detail.

If you plan to pay for your holiday with miles and points, you should absolutely get a travel insurance policy which covers them, just in case.

I’m quite curious to know how travel insurers actually value miles and points, so if you have any experiences with claims, do share them.

Do you know of any other travel insurance policies with miles and points coverage?

That’s very informative.. I would have missed that coverage out if I did not see your article. Thanks

Ken

I second @Leo… Another fantastic topic to cover, Aaron! ??

It certainly made me dig up my AIG Policy wordings right away as I didn’t think of it either… Chubb’s (your example) wording are more favorable for the policy holder, but AIG’s does cover too (a good thing!)… but with AIG, I find the wording a bit not-so-clear… I’ll email a screenshot to you… can you be a champ and see if you can figure out what it mean, in the few scenarios you came up with?

Thanks in advance!

Aaron Wong

when i researched this post AIG, Aviva and Chubb were the only 3 policies that covered miles and points. let me know if you see anything else.

Vikas Sharma

I hold Sompo travel insurance and all its plan categories cover miles and points. The exact wording is as below: Frequent Flyer Points: We will pay for loss of frequent flyer or similar travel points used by the Insured Person as a registered member to purchase an airline ticket following the Trip Cancellation or Postponement if the Insured Person is unable to recover the lost points from any other source. The payment for lost points will be calculated based on the following, whichever is the lower: 1. Cost of an equivalent class airline tickets based on the quoted retail price …  Read more »

Gary

Thanks for that, my insurance broker specifically recommended Sompo as well

DK

I used to get Chubb for its higher coverage, then switched over to Sompo as it was generally cheaper with the promotions. However, I just did a comparison between Sompo and Chubb for an upcoming trip to Japan and found Chubb is slightly cheaper. Probably wise to check the price difference before buying – just my 1 cent worth of opinion 🙂

SLWYD

Annoyingly, Sompo doesn’t offer annual travel insurance when I was shopping around for one

Eugene

So it seems lately that Chubb no longer covers miles and points. Not sure if you would be making an update to this blog post, but if you do, then it might be worth noting

Happy Camper

Thanks for the heads up, Eugene!

M

I bought my Chubb insurance on 15 Feb and the wording policy still covers Loss of Frequent Flyer points. Is this a recent change?

@M.. Mine, from last Apr, is still ‘in force’ .. but had renewed ‘in advance’ for the laggauge giveaway.. but will not not go ahead with it..

From a quick check, Just Sompo and Aviva still cover award redemptions, with wording and benefits slightly different.. I’ll look into both and then decide..

I looked at AIG and they (as of today’s wordings) still exclude miles..

Quite sad.. but oh well…

quick question: where are you seeing this? i’m seeing them as still covered on the site

Hey Aaron..

First link.. the greenish document..

Page 23 of 40.. What’s not covered.. Point #4..

ah, i see. it’s under lifestyle cover. but in any case i was talking about amex chubb travel insurance, not chubb per se. amex chubb still covers right?

Hmmm….. now THAT’S interesting… and gosh, I don’t know… odd tho, no..? that Chubb would word the two differently? Now I’m confused.. 😰

Was out and about earlier… Now that I’ve looked at both a bit more, it certainly looks like Chubb has two different products instead of what I though was ‘one-product-replacing-another’… It certainly looks like the Travel Insurance product that is marketed by Amex is as per what you were referring to in this post, and the one I’ve got.. 😊

Sune

So Aaron and team – you are getting closer on the travel insurance topic but I have yet to see you doing a comprehensive comparison of travel insurance that are either part of the credit card or independent 3 party options and it is thoroughly needed for us here in SG

Gosh you’re an idiot.. do you seriously believe you walk on water and the world owes you something?

Whau – did not think people would write like that on this forum.

“A little jab” is something between you and a friend.. maybe even you amongst other friends… I assume you have these… but not on a public forum where people are (mostly) sincerely trying to help… for the greater good… your “little jab” was like crispy chicken rendang.. and not just by me.. or are you also so thick you don’t see it… own it.. for being an idiot.. then move on..

:)

Sune, your sense of entitlement is overwhelmingly astonishing. 🙂

Thank you, Aaron and team. You guys are doing an excellent job!

K

Sune, perhaps you can do up the comprehensive comparison that is thoroughly needed and then Aaron and team can comment on your work. Afterall, didn’t he start the community pages for people that have valuable insights to share but don’t have the ability to commit to be a regular writer?

actually, I did do something on this once upon a time but it’s quite outdated. https://milelion.com/2016/01/10/credit-card-travel-insurance-compared/ the problem with articles like this is that there are many different facets to compare and very subtle differences. eg one provider may cover $1,000 per 6 hours for a delayed flight, but define delay as >6 hours. another may cover $500 per 4 hours, but define delay as >4 hours. there’s no real standardized metric for some of these which makes a nice snappy comparison table difficult to put together. others may have different definitions of key terms. how do you factor that …  Read more »

Hi Aaron Thank you for reposting this one. Seems my little jab above got a lot of people rubbed the wrong way though which was unintended as you and the team always keep a joking tone and I had jabbed you a while back on same topic incl for suggested item for the big event you had recently. But water under the bridge and so on. This link is good in shedding light on the conondrum that getting right insurance and right coverage is not easy and that programs offered by credit cards are eye wash at best and guess …  Read more »

Hi, if i don’t have any of the above AMEX cards, then which card should I use for the purchase. If I recall correctly, a number of banks have explicit excluded insurance as an eligible transaction. I have DBSWWC (max out), UOB PPV, CITI Rewards, CITI Premiermiles etc. Please advise.

Ok, i got the answer to my own question, so i thought i will share. Can’t charge insurance to DBS/UOB cards – won’t get a single mile. Only way is to charge to Citibank where you will get 1.2miles/dollar or HSBC revolution card at 2 miles/dollar. Please correct me if I am wrong. I learn it the hard way. sigh!!

KW

Hey Aaron thanks for doing this — I hadn’t realised that most policies don’t cover the loss of miles! On a related topic, if you have the time and inclination to do so, could you also research and write an article on coverage for missing connections on separate tickets? So far I’ve found only World Nomads would cover missed flights under separate PNRs, but there’s a hefty US$100 deductible.

Asian Miler

Nice topic to post about. As with most policies in Singapore, does the insurance issued only cover bookings originating in Singapore? Will the insurance apply if I book a one-way return award and I encounter any of the covered conditions?

I have checked and confirmed with my agent that with AIG, the maximum they would compensate, if miles-redemption tickets, would be $500.. ?

So guess who’s going to drop AIG and will sign up Chubb??

Thanks, Aaron!! ??

Anne H

When there’s a delay and the airline gives us a voucher for accommodation, can one still claim for the delay? Another point is that when they divert because of weather and one misses the connecting flight, they don’t give out written statements – so how does one prove the delay/missed connection? I was caught at Atlanta once and all the flights to SFO had left. We were all told to use the banks of phones they had set up and the staff on hand were surly and not helpful – as far as the airline was concerned it was a …  Read more »

Technically speaking, your insurance policy is suppose to cover you “in event..” and regardless of what said airline does/acts to compensate/mitigate the event… so you should be able to successfully claim, should you be able to prove “the event”… The one that I still don’t get.. given the number of nasty incidents in the past… is that airlines do not prepare better for “when the s**t hits the fan”.. I would imagine that this would not be too difficult to do/train/role-play..? I mean, it’s happened countless number of times, right? Videos are all over social media all over the world, …  Read more »

I can’t thank Aaron enough for the write up… Fortunately, I didn’t wind up holding on the the short end of a stick, but that’s what Insurance policies are for, right? and “the bad” could very well have happened and it could happen in the future… well… thanks for Aaron, it won’t be happening to me! ? Just to show that it could well have happened just last month, I made a trip to NZ on redemption SQ F with my elderly mum… and being elderly, of course, at any time, her health could’ve taken a turn for the less-than-good …  Read more »

My first priority with Travel Insurance is how difficult it is get the payout, whether they make you go through the loop or actually will pay. Also the terms and conditions. Some insurance give out a lot of rewards but the T&C screw you. So make sure you read the fine print.

Best Travel Credit Card Recommendations

The best travel rewards credit cards offer valuable rewards, easy-to-use benefits, and helpful features like travel coverage. Our team of credit card experts at Business Insider chose the best options available on the market in 2024, and reviewed each one below.

Best Travel Credit Card Overall

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is our top pick for a well-rounded travel rewards credit card. Even infrequent travelers can benefit from the slew of premium perks on this card, typically found on cards with far higher annual fees.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card stands out for its travel protection benefits. When you pay for travel expenses with this card and meet certain requirements, you can request reimbursement for unexpected expenses that may arise when your flight is delayed or if your baggage is delayed or lost.

You'll also have primary rental car insurance, meaning you won't have to file claims through your personal car insurance plan or pay for coverage from the rental car company. This card also offers a 10% anniversary points bonus, and up to $50 in annual statement credits for hotel purchases made through the Chase Travel℠ Portal.

The rewards rate on the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card isn't shabby either. You'll earn 5 points on travel purchased through Chase Ultimate Rewards; 2 points on all other travel purchases; and 3 points on dining, online grocery purchases (excluding Target, Walmart, and wholesale clubs), and select streaming services. You'll earn 1 point per dollar on everything else.

Chase Ultimate Rewards® points are some of the easiest points to use in various ways. You can redeem them for travel directly through the Chase Travel Portal for a 25% boost in value, where 1 point will be worth 1.25 cents apiece. You can also transfer your points to Chase's airline and hotel transfer partners , which include United Airlines, Hyatt, Marriott, and many other airlines and hotel chains around the world. Cardholders can also use points for statement credits, gift cards, merchandise, and more.

What the experts love: High welcome bonus offer, earns bonus points on travel, dining, and online grocery purchases, you can redeem points for 1.25 cents apiece for travel or through Chase for 25% value bonus

What the experts don't love: Doesn't offer some of the travel perks you'll get with competing cards, such as airport lounge access and a statement credit for Global Entry

Best No-Annual-Fee Card for Earning Travel Miles

The Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card is our top choice for a no-annual-fee travel card ( rates and fees ), and it's got many of the same perks as its bigger sibling, the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card.

New cardholders can earn a respectable 20,000 miles after spending $500 on purchases within three months from account opening (worth at least $340 in travel according to Business Insider's valuations). While the card only earns 1.25 miles per dollar on most purchases (plus 5x on hotels and car rentals booked through Capital One Travel), it's still a compelling choice if an annual fee isn't for you ( rates and fees ).

You'll get the same access to Capital One's airline and hotel partners as you would with annual-fee cards, and a handful of benefits including car rental insurance***, travel accident insurance***, and purchase assurance***. This is also a solid pick if you're looking for a zero-interest credit card  with a 0% introductory APR offer, because new cardholders receive a 0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers for 15 months (intro fee of 3% for the first 15 months, then 4% of the amount of each balance transfer at a promotional APR that Capital One may offer you at any other time), then a 19.99% - 29.99% Variable APR ( rates and fees ).

What the experts love: No annual fee, access to transfer partners, generous intro 0% APR offer

What the experts don't love: Few travel benefits, lower earning rate

The newly announced Wells Fargo Autograph Journey℠ Visa® Card earns one of the highest rates of return on hotel bookings for a credit card that isn't co-branded with a specific hotel chain.

This card has a $95 annual fee, inviting direct comparisons to two other cards on this list: The Sapphire Preferred Card , and the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card . In exchange, cardholders earn at least 3x on dining and travel purchases. Airline purchases earn 4x, and hotel purchases earn 5x.

Wells Fargo simultaneously announced brand-new airline and hotel partners: Choice Privileges, Aer Lingus AerClub, Air France-KLM Flying Blue, avianca lifemiles, and British Airways Executive Club. Wells Fargo Autograph Journey℠ Visa® Card cardholders can redeem rewards at the standard redemption rate of 1 cent per point for cash back, or transfer their rewards to any of the travel partners above for additional value.

The Wells Fargo Autograph Journey℠ Visa® Card will be available for in-person applications at select Wells Fargo bank locations on March 9, 2024. Nationwide applications open online and in person on March 20, 2024.

Best Travel Credit Card for Beginners

The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card is a great "set it and forget it" card, in the sense that you don't have to worry about various bonus categories for earning rewards. You'll earn 5 miles per dollar on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel and 2x miles on all other purchases.

The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card also offers one of the most straightforward ways to redeem rewards for travel: you're able to use your miles to cover recent travel purchases from your card statement, at a rate of 1 cent per mile.

You also have the option to transfer Capital One miles *** to more than a dozen frequent flyer and hotel loyalty programs, including Air Canada Aeroplan, Etihad Guest, and Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer. Capital One also added new partners including British Airways and Turkish Airlines, and improved the transfer ratio to 1:1 for most partners.

The selection of transfer partners is best suited to someone who wants to travel internationally and who doesn't mind spending some time researching the best ways to redeem miles with the different frequent flyer program options. But the upside is that you can always use your miles to cover your travel purchases. You also get up to a $100 Global Entry/TSA PreCheck application fee credit.

What the experts love:  The ability to use your miles to cover your recent travel expenses; it earns at least 2 miles per dollar on every purchase.

What the experts don't love: Other cards offer higher rewards on certain spending categories such as travel and dining.

Best Travel Rewards on Everyday Spending

The Citi Strata Premier℠ Card isn't as flashy or well-known as some other travel cards, but that doesn't mean you should overlook it, especially if you spend a lot on its bonus categories. Cardholders earn an impressive 3x points on air travel, gas stations, restaurants, supermarkets, and hotels, and 1 point per dollar on everything else.

Along with a solid welcome bonus offer of 75,000 bonus points after spending $4,000 in the first three months of account opening (worth $1,200 based on Business Insider's valuations), you'll receive $100 off a single hotel stay of $500 or more (excluding taxes and fees) booked through thankyou.com once per calendar year.

While it isn't the best for travel protections, the Citi Strata Premier℠ Card is the only card currently available to new applicants that unlocks the ability to transfer your ThankYou points to Citi's full list of airline and hotel partners , including JetBlue, Singapore Airlines, and Wyndham.

What the experts love:  Strong rewards earning in useful everyday categories, access to Citi's transfer partners

What the experts don't love: Lack of travel protections like car rental insurance, few travel perks compared to similar rewards cards

Best Travel Card for Students

The Bank of America® Travel Rewards Credit Card for Students is a fairly unique offering, as there aren't many student credit cards specifically geared toward travel. New cardholders can earn 25,000 online bonus points after spending $1,000 in purchases in the first 90 days from account opening (redeemed as a $250 statement credit toward travel and dining purchases). That's a decent offer for a no-annual-fee card, and the earning structure is simple, too — 1.5x points per dollar on every purchase, with no bonus categories to keep track of.

There's also a 0% intro APR for your first 18 billing cycles for purchases, and for any balance transfers made within the first 60 days of opening your account (then a 17.99% - 27.99% Variable APR) which can be handy if you have big purchases (like textbooks or supplies) you want to pay for over time.

The Bank of America® Travel Rewards Credit Card for Students is a good choice if you prefer a straightforward card without having to worry about award charts or transfer partners. It's also a safe bet if you want to use it while traveling internationally — it doesn't charge pesky foreign transaction fees, so you won't be on the hook for extra charges if you use it overseas.

However, you won't find many extras — like travel benefits or purchase protections — with this card. If you're looking for better benefits, be sure to check out our guide to the best student credit cards for all the top options.

What the experts love: Impressive welcome bonus offer for a student credit card, good flat-rate rewards earning

What the experts don't love: No flashy extra perks or shopping benefits

Most Affordable Premium Travel Credit Card

The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card was unveiled in late 2021 and offers a massive welcome bonus of 75,000 bonus miles when you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening — worth at least $1,275 in travel, based on Business Insider's valuation of Capital One miles .

The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card is loaded with premium benefits that can more than offset the $395 annual fee ( rates and fees ). For context, the Venture X's annual fee, while high, is significantly lower than other premium travel card competitors.

Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card cardholders receive $300 per year in credits toward travel booked through Capital One, Priority Pass, Plaza Premium, and Capital One airport lounge access (even for authorized users), a 10,000-mile bonus on each account anniversary (worth $100 in travel), and Visa Infinite travel and purchase benefits.

As with other cards that earn Capital One miles , you can transfer rewards to over a dozen airline and hotel partners to book award travel, or use miles to book through the Capital One Travel Portal .

What the experts love:  Between $300 a year in travel credit and a 10,000-mile bonus on each account anniversary, you can offset the annual fee entirely — and that's not even considering other benefits like lounge access.

What the experts don't love:  The $300 travel credit is more restrictive than other cards' — it only applies to travel booked through Capital One.

Best for Earning Travel Credit from Dining and Groceries

The American Express® Gold Card is an ideal travel card for anyone who frequently eats out and/or shops at U.S. supermarkets. You'll earn 4x Amex Membership Rewards points on these purchases (though note the $25,000 calendar year annual cap for U.S. supermarkets; after that, you'll earn just 1 point per dollar, but that's a pretty high cap). The card also earns 3x points on flights booked directly with the airlines or through AmexTravel.com, and 1 point per dollar on everything else.

While the $250 annual fee is on the high side, you can offset it thanks to an annual statement credit. You can get up to $120 in annual dining credits**, but it's divided into up to $10 in credits each month, and the credit only applies at select restaurants and delivery services, including Grubhub, Seamless, Milk Bar, Wine.com, and Goldbelly, and participating Shake Shack locations.

You'll also get up to $120 Uber Cash ($10 per month) credit each calendar year (this is only applicable to U.S. Eats orders and rides, and the Gold Card needs to be added to the Uber app to receive the Uber Cash benefit).

What the experts love: "4x points on restaurants and at U.S. supermarkets (on up to $25,000 per year, then 1x) is great — usually, a card favors one or the other," says Rathner. Plus, the card offers monthly dining credits.

What the experts don't love: Wilson notes that other cards offer similar benefits for a lower annual fee, and Rathner notes that the card's travel and dining credits come with some important limitations — so read the fine print.

Best Premium Card for Travel Insurance and Bonus Categories

The Chase Sapphire Reserve® has a $550 annual fee, which means it's not for everybody, but if you're serious about maximizing your rewards and you travel frequently, it could be worth it. It offers a bonus of 75,000 bonus points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening.

Not only do you get up to $300 in statement credits toward travel each year (and Chase has a very generous definition of travel — including everything from airfare to highway tolls), but you also earn 5x total points on air travel and 10x total points on hotels and car rentals purchased through Chase Ultimate Rewards (excluding the $300 travel credit) and 3x points on all other travel and dining. You also get airport lounge access through the Priority Pass network , which has more than 1,300 locations worldwide.

New benefits also include access to Chase Sapphire lounges in JFK , LaGuardia , Boston , and Hong Kong, as well as the Chase Sapphire Terrace at Austin Airport . You'll also receive benefits with DoorDash  and Instacart that can save you money on delivery (activation required).

The Chase Sapphire Reserve® is currently offering cardholders two years of complimentary Lyft Pink All Access membership (valued at $199 per year) for member-exclusive pricing, priority pickup, and more (activation required).

When it comes to redeeming points, you can book travel through Chase and get 1.5 cents per point (a 50% bonus over the standard 1-cent-per-point rate), or you can transfer your Chase Ultimate Rewards to travel partners like Hyatt, British Airways, and United.

Plus, like the less-expensive Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® offers some of the best credit card travel insurance around. This includes primary car rental insurance, trip delay insurance, trip cancellation protection, and lost baggage insurance.

The Chase Sapphire Reserve® card was previously our pick for the best travel card overall, before the annual fee increased from $450 to $550. While the Reserve did add some additional benefits, the Reserve no longer makes as much sense for casual travelers. As a result, we now recommend the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card as the best travel credit card for most people.

What the experts love:  Earns 3x points on travel and dining purchases made outside of Chase Travel Portal, annual $300 travel credit, points are worth 1.5 cents apiece for travel booked through Chase

What the experts don't love: You have to squeeze every drop of value out of this card to make that jaw-dropping $550 annual fee worth your while.

Best for Luxury Travel Benefits and Airport Lounge Access

The Platinum Card® from American Express has one of the highest rewards card annual fees —  $695 — but it can still be well worth it if you can put all of its statement credits and generous welcome bonus offer to use.

You'll earn 5x points on flights when you book directly through the airline or through American Express Travel (on up to $500,000 per calendar year), which makes the card a great choice for purchasing airfare. The card offers trip cancellation and interruption insurance, plus some of the best purchase protection, so it's a good option for buying expensive items (and don't forget to see if you can take advantage of an Amex Offer ** for bonus points or cash back).

The Platinum Card® from American Express offers more airport lounge access than any other personal travel card — in addition to Priority Pass membership**, you get access to Amex Centurion Lounges , Delta Sky Clubs (when you're flying Delta), and more.

The card's annual statement credits can go a long way toward offsetting the high annual fee. You get up to $200 in statement credits toward airline incidental fees** like checked bags and inflight purchases; up to $100 each year in credit toward Saks Fifth Avenue purchases**; and up to $200 in annual Uber credits (including Uber Eats)**.

Just keep in mind that you're limited to one designated airline you choose each year in your Amex account for the airline incidental fee credit, and both the Saks and Uber credits are divided into portions. You'll get up to $50 in statement credits toward Saks purchases from January to June, and another credit of up to $50 for Saks purchases from July to December.

With the Uber credit, you get up to $15 each month, and a $20 bonus in December for a total of $35 that month.

What the experts love:  Lots of luxury benefits, including airport lounge access and statement credits with Uber and Saks

What the experts don't love: This card's $695 annual fee, and minimal bonus categories

How to Choose the Best Travel Credit Card

While it takes more effort to redeem points or miles compared to cash back, the upside is that you can get much more value for your points compared to simply cashing in your rewards for a statement credit or check at a rate of 1 cent per point.

In fact, it's possible to receive double, triple, or even more than that amount when you're strategic about how you redeem your rewards, particularly if you book expensive luxury hotels or first-class flights.

In this guide, we've focused mostly on the best travel credit cards that earn transferable points. Transferable points include popular currencies such as:

  • Amex Membership Rewards
  • Chase Ultimate Rewards
  • Citi ThankYou Rewards
  • Capital One miles

You can transfer these points to both airline and hotel partner loyalty programs. You can even redeem your points to offset the cash price of your travel at a flat rate.

Travel Credit Card Frequently Asked Questions

If you want a single credit card that does it all and don't mind paying a generous annual fee, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® is a great choice. It comes with the best travel insurance available on the market, as well as a $300 travel credit each year that can be used on most types of travel.

The best travel credit card overall is the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, but the best card for your particular situation will depend on what benefits you care about the most, as well as how you feel about paying a high annual fee.

We'd recommend opening a travel card that earns Amex or Chase points, because these are among the easiest rewards to redeem and you have various travel partners to utilize. But if you've investigated your options and are confident that you can get value out of their rewards, credit cards that earn Capital One miles or Citi ThankYou points can make sense as well.

There are two main types of travel credit cards: Cards that earn transferable points, and airline/hotel co-branded credit cards. Transferable points currencies include Amex Membership Rewards points, Capital One miles, and Chase Ultimate Rewards points.

Airline credit cards and hotel credit cards earn points or miles within a respective hotel or airline program; you don't have the option to redeem your rewards with a wide variety of travel partners (or if you do, the transfer ratio usually isn't great).

To pick the right travel credit card for you, you'll want to evaluate its welcome bonus offer, ease of use, benefits, and annual fee. The best one for you will ideally have a combination of an attractive sign-up bonus , lots of options for earning and redeeming rewards, benefits that save you money, and a low or no annual fee.

Travel credit cards with annual fees are worth it if you're able to get significant value out of their benefits and rewards. Before you apply for a card , make sure you'll actually use all the features that contribute to the card's annual fee. For example, if a card offers an annual statement credit of up to $200 toward travel but you can't use it, you're probably not getting what you pay for.

Travel credit cards work by earning you points (or miles) on every purchase you make, with the goal of helping you earn enough rewards to book free travel . The best travel cards earn points that you can transfer to various airline and hotel partners — like Amex, Chase, or Citi points.

A great way to work toward getting a free flight is by applying for a travel credit card and earning its welcome bonus offer. Domestic award flights in economy class typically require about 25,000 points, so depending on the welcome bonus offer, you could have enough rewards for a flight right out of the gate.

Why You Should Trust Us: How We Chose the Best Travel Credit Cards

Business Insider evaluated dozens of travel credit cards currently available to new applicants and narrowed down the list to the best options based on the following factors:

  • Welcome bonus offer — Do new cardholders get a valuable incentive to sign up and meet a minimum spending requirement?
  • Ongoing rewards — How many points or miles do you earn on your purchases?
  • Benefits — Beyond rewards, does the card offer valuable perks such as statement credits for travel, primary car rental insurance, and airport lounge access?
  • Annual fee — Is there an annual fee, and if so, is it affordable or easy to offset with card perks?
  • Overall value — Does the card justify its annual fee by offering useful benefits and valuable rewards, and is it worth it?
