USS Orleck reopens on Jacksonville’s waterfront

The USS Orleck has officially reopened for tours, in time for the Memorial Day weekend.

The veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars reopened on Wednesday and is now set for daily tours this holiday weekend, including Memorial Day on Monday.

Docked at 610 E Bay St. behind the as-yet reopened Jacksonville Fire Museum, tour hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Wednesday through Friday, then 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays. The last visitors may board 30 minutes before closing.

The retired U.S. Navy destroyer will also be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday at the old shipyard Pier 1.

The public reopening comes just over a year after the Orleck came to the city and two months after it was towed to its permanent home on the St. Johns riverfront. Normal public visits ended when the ship was moved.

The USS Orleck could become a floating museum docked at a pier in the Shipyards.

The USS Orleck has reopened for tours. | Jacksonville Historic Naval Ship Association

The Gearing-class destroyer was built in 1945 and operated in the Navy’s 7th Fleet during the Korean War. Renovated in 1962, the 390-foot warship once known as the “Grey Ghost” went to sea during the Vietnam War, earning 14 Battle Stars on top of four awarded it during the Korean conflict. The Orleck later served as a training ship, then was a floating museum in Orange, Texas, then again in 2010 in Lake Charles, Louisiana.

Ship ownership was transferred in 2019 to the Jacksonville Naval Museum after three years of disuse. The Orleck was towed in late March 2022 to a mooring site Downtown on the St. Johns River, next to the Hyatt Regency.

Early on April 3, powerful tugboats moved the 2,250-ton warship to the Shipyards, its keel sliding into silt in the basin. Now a $100,000 wooden access ramp will connect to a 70-foot-long gangway. Another gangway at the bow remains for crew and emergency access to and from the old pier, while a maritime museum ticket center with air conditioned bathrooms is now on shore.

The Orleck is the first part of a planned riverfront development that will include the Jacksonville Fire Museum , moved next door in March 2022. Just west, the city has begun a Catherine Street extension that will include angled parking. Just east of the USS Orleck is what will be called Shipyards West Park , across from the Maxwell House plant. Then the second generation of Jacksonville’s Museum of Science & History is planned for 2.5 acres of the Shipyards along East Bay Street, with a riverwalk and park space.

The Jacksonville Naval Museum hosted a private ceremony last week to commemorate the day in 1945 when the USS Orleck was officially launched into its long military duty.

The ship museum also will host a shipboard Kutting For Kids event from noon to 4 p.m. June 25, to raise funds to fix the warship’s berthing areas so it can host youth overnight stays and education programs. Participants will receive a haircut, with hair donated to Locks of Love, a charity that provides hairpieces to children suffering from long-term medical hair loss.

En route to Jacksonville, retired warship USS Orleck expected to arrive downtown on Saturday

ship tour jacksonville fl

The retired U.S. Navy destroyer that will serve as a floating Cold War museum is scheduled to arrive in downtown Jacksonville on Saturday.

The U.S.S. Orleck , which earned the nickname "The Grey Ghost of the Vietnam Coast" by firing more rounds in support of ground troops than any ship in the Navy, is under tow from Port Arthur, Texas, where it spent several months preparing for its journey across the Gulf of Mexico and around the southern tip of Florida.

Latham Smith of Smith Maritime in Green Cove Springs, the company towing the Orleck, said pulling a 390-foot warship across the gulf isn't as difficult as it sounds. The Orleck displaces about 1,000 tons, but the company pulled a 90,000-ton load all the way to Portugal last year.

"That’s a very small thing for us to tow," Smith said from Louisiana, where his company has a second shipyard. "The tug that’s pulling it is accustomed to pulling 900-foot ships."

It is being pulled by the Elsbeth III , a tug that Smith built himself in Green Cove Springs. The tug, one of six in the company's fleet, has a 1,000-horsepower engine and three 8-foot propellers and has been all over the world, pulling ships and barges. "We just stay on this planet," Smith said. "We don’t go anywhere else."

The shape of the Orleck causes more trouble than its size, Smith said. Barges are designed to be pulled by a tugboat, but warships, with their pointed bows, tend to zig-zag under tow.

"One of the characteristics of warships is that they tend to not tow nice and straight," Smith said. "We have to be very aware of the directional stability."

The Orleck is a "dead ship" while under tow, meaning that it has no power and no steering. Coast Guard regulations prohibit anyone from even being aboard the ship while it's being towed, Smith said.

The ship was near Key West on Tuesday afternoon and was slated to come up the Gulf Stream, then angle in toward the St. Johns River. It should be at the mouth of the river around dawn on Saturday. Depending on river traffic, it should take about four or five hours to travel to its temporary berth on the Northbank, just upstream from the Main Street bridge. It will be berthed parallel to the shoreline, with its starboard side facing the Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront.

Justin Weakland, vice president of the Jacksonville Historic Naval Ship Association , said the Orleck will stay at its temporary berth for a few months while work is completed on a pier, restrooms and ticket office on the Shipyards property in downtown Jacksonville.

Weakland said the Orleck will not be open for public tours until its permanent berth is completed. He said plans call for the ship to be in place and open by June 11, when the city is planning a large bicentennial celebration.

The Orleck will become a floating museum focusing on the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam era.

The ship has a  long and colorful history . It's a Gearing Class destroyer that was built in Texas and launched in May of 1945, near the end of World War II, at a cost of $6.3 million. It operated as part of the Seventh Fleet during the Korean War, then underwent extensive renovations under the Navy's Fleet Rehabilitation and Maintenance program in 1962.

The ship earned 18 Battle Stars, four during the Korean conflict and 14 during the fighting in Vietnam .

It later served as a training ship and appeared in the TV miniseries "Winds of War." In 1982 it was transferred to the Turkish Navy, where it was renamed the TCG Yücetepe, serving until 2000.

WEATHER ALERT

A river flood warning in effect for Columbia County

It’s official: uss orleck is coming to jacksonville, the ship could dock in late february or early march.

Brianna Andrews , Reporter, weekend anchor

Jenese Harris , Anchor/Meteorologist

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A highly decorated retired Navy destroyer will soon become a downtown attraction on the St. Johns River.

Daniel Bean, president of the Jacksonville Historic Naval Ship Association, signed for ownership of the USS Orleck on Tuesday afternoon.

“As you all know the city of Jacksonville is the third largest navy installation in our country and like the other 35 cities with war ships on display it is time for Jacksonville to have a symbol of the United States Navy and what the United States Navy has meant to Jacksonville and its development,” Bean said.

The JHNSA has been working with the city to make the USS Orleck a Jacksonville Naval Museum at the Shipyards. They now hope to have the top tier open to the public in 30 days.

At a private ceremony Tuesday at Manifest Distillery, the Jacksonville Naval Museum took official ownership of the USS Orleck Museum Ship.

“This will be a wonderful attraction for the city, this will be a wonderful way to honor all of the veterans in Northeast Florida,” Bruce Fouraker, JHNSA board member, said. “Jacksonville has over 250,000 military veterans that live in the area and this is just a wonderful thing to have.”

The USS Orleck is in dry dock, in Texas, where it has undergone a bow to stern inspection. A sign already placed in the Jacksonville shipyards says “coming soon – Future home of the USS Orleck Museum Ship.”

But getting to this point has come with challenges.

The cost to bring the Orleck to Jacksonville has gone up significantly from the last estimate in March 2020 of $1.3 million and $56,000 for paint.

The project is now expected to have a price tag of $1.8 million due to $250,000 of new repairs needed because of Hurricane Laura, cost increases include money for materials, fuel and labor -- plus $65,000 for paint.

In September, News4JAX spoke with Justin Weakland, a member of the Jacksonville Naval Museum, who said getting this ship to Jacksonville would create an instant tourist attraction because we have Naval stations here, veterans and history lovers who would want to see this ship.

The group has released some examples of what the museum could look like once it’s complete and is collecting donations to help offset the cost.

Next to the ship, there are plans for a ticket office, gift shop and a park that could include Naval aircraft on display.

The Jacksonville Naval Museum will feature the “US Navy Cold War Experience,” which is represented by the ex-USS Orleck.

It is named after Lt. Joseph Orleck. The ship was called the “Top Gun” of Vietnam, fired 11,000+ rounds earning the nickname “Grey Ghost of the Vietnam Coast” and netting an astonishing 14 battle stars throughout the war. It received dozens of awards for military service.

It was the most decorated post World War II ship ever built and supporters said that is reason enough to save it.

The Orleck embodies the Korean War, Vietnam War, and Cold War periods in US Navy history, having served in all three.

To fund the only U.S. Naval warship museum in Florida, the group has $2.5 million: $1 million from the state of Florida and another $1.5 million from loans and creditors.

It will support veterans as a local resource and networking center.

The original plans to bring the USS Adams to downtown Jacksonville as a floating museum were scrapped -- along with the ship.

PHOTOS: Giant naval ship to cruise into Jacksonville on Saturday morning

The USS Orleck is scheduled to arrive on Jacksonville’s Northbank on Saturday.

The Gearing Class Destroyer is set to arrive at the entrance of the St. Johns River channel around 7 a.m.

The trip downtown will take another four to six hours, putting the ship at the Jacksonville Riverwalk sometime between 11:30 in the morning and 2:30 in the afternoon.

The president of the Jacksonville Historic Naval Ship Association, Dan Bean, says the Orleck is a mark of Jacksonville’s significance to the U.S. Navy.

"Jacksonville is Florida's number one Navy town. And when you drive across that Main Street Bridge tomorrow afternoon, you're going to know why," Bean said Friday.

NAS Jax is the third-largest naval base in the country.

Smith Maritime of Green Cove Springs sent its tugboat, Elsbeth 3, to tow the vessel from Port Arthur, Texas, to the First Coast.

The destroyer will become the Jacksonville Naval Museum, and plans are to open it to the public in June as part of the city’s bicentennial celebration.

The ship will eventually park in the Jacksonville Shipyards project in downtown.

Jacksonville Naval Museum sends USS Orleck Museum Ship to Drydock

| Published on: Dec 16, 2021 | |

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 16 December 2021

Jacksonville, Florida – The city of Jacksonville and local Navy and military Veterans have something to be thankful for this holiday season! The Jacksonville Historic Naval Ship Association (JHNSA), parent owner of the future Jacksonville Naval Museum, has started the towing of the USS Orleck Naval Museum to drydock! The JHNSA took advantage of an opening in the drydock schedule. This is a critical step in the process of verifying the ship is able to continue to serve as a museum ship and is within the financial means of the JHNSA. This will also help satisfy the development agreement requirement of having evidence the ship is sound to serve as a museum ship in Jacksonville.

The USS Orleck departed Lake Charles, Louisiana on Wednesday, December 15th. The Orleck will arrive at Port Arthur, Texas on Thursday, December 16th. Smith Maritime Incorporated, of Green Cove Springs, is the company providing the tow. The cost of this first tow is $105,000. While in Port Arthur, the ship will be put into drydock at the Gulf Copper and Manufacturing Corporation for inspection, hull strengthening, and preservation. The drydocking is expected to take place on Friday, December 17th. The preservation will be cleaning of the hull and painting of the exterior of the ship from top to bottom. This work is expected to take 30 days, with the dry dock working days taking place Monday through Saturday and closed for holidays. This will position the Orleck’s tow for Jacksonville in mid-January with an arrival in late-January. The tow to Jacksonville is expected to take approximately 10 to 12 days.

The costs to JHNSA to bring the Orleck to Jacksonville has gone up considerably since the last estimate done in March of 2020. With $250,000 of new repairs needed from last year’s Hurricane Laura, cost increases for materials, fuel and labor – the project costs in the shipyard now stands at an estimated $1.8 million plus $65,000 for paint. This is up from previous estimates of $1.3 million for the shipyards and $56,000 for paint from 18 months ago. The JHNSA is grateful to have recently just received $100,000 donation in October from an out of state Navy Veteran who supports strongly JHNSA’s mission to create a naval museum and help save the historic USS Orleck. Since January of 2020, JHNSA has spent approximately $164,000 on the Orleck for inspections, ship insurance, towing down payment, and other needs.

In dry docking the Orleck will receive an inspection of the hull to ensure it is capable of continued to service as a museum ship. It is expected the JHNSA will know the status of the inspection by Tuesday, 21 December. Should the hull be found beyond the JHNSA financial means for restoration, the decision will then be made by the Orleck Association with concurrence of the JHNSA to salvage the ship for scrap.

In Jacksonville, the ship will be moored stern in, starboard side to the 600’ long “Pier 1”. This is adjacent to the Berkman Marina along East Bay Street in the old Shipyards area of the Sports and Entertainment District in

downtown, Jacksonville. The arrival date in Jacksonville has not been set and will be notified by future press releases. Once moored the JHNSA will continue to prepare the museum ship for opening as the Jacksonville Naval Museum. The “pier-side” preparation work is expected to be two to four weeks in length but may be extended as needed. Prior to the ship’s arrival, work will be done to prepare the pier. A separate modular building with ticketing, gift shop, and restrooms will be put on hold by request of the Downtown Investment Authority (DIA). The DIA has asked JHNSA to wait until plans are worked out for the Shipyards area.

The Jacksonville Naval Museum will feature the “US Navy Cold War Experience”, which is represented by the ex-USS Orleck. The Orleck, a WWII era Gearing Class destroyer, was heavily modified under the Fleet Rehabilitation and Maintenance (FRAM II) program in the early 1960’s. The Orleck embodies the Korean War, Vietnam War, and Cold War periods in US Navy history having served in all three. The steam powered, twin propeller, 4 boiler Orleck is much smaller than today’s modern-day gas turbine powered destroyers with a length of only 390 feet, 41’ wide beam, an “air draft” of 109’ at the top mast with a current empty displacement of approximately 2,350 tons.

Having such a long and prolific service history the Orleck is the most decorated post-World War II ship ever built and was awarded 18 battle stars. After the Orleck’s US Naval service, she was transferred to the Turkish Navy and renamed the Yüctepe (D 345). She continued to serve until being transferred back to the United States in August of 2000 to become a museum ship.

The Jacksonville Naval Museum will honor past generations of Veterans and inspire future Patriots through STEM plus history education opportunities. The museum will serve as a gathering place for Naval Associations, crew reunions, and military conventions while supporting Veterans as a local resource and networking center. Future initiatives may include a Tall Ships Festival or Navy Fleet Week; increasing tourism to downtown Jacksonville.

Bringing the ship to downtown and creating the Jacksonville Naval Museum is a monumental undertaking, but we feel with the support of our local community – this long-standing dream will be turned into reality! We ask our local community to support us in any way possible: share the news of the museum coming, visit the museum once we are open, volunteer with us for the variety of positions that will be available, and donate to this worthy cause if possible. We named it the ‘Jacksonville’ Naval Museum because it really is about our community coming together to celebrate our rich military history, inspire patriotism, and honor our veterans and active-duty service members.

We look forward to bringing this “Bold Ship to the Bold City” that once was home to many Cold War era workhorses like the Oliver Hazard Perry Frigates, P-3 Orions, and MH-60 Seahawks. We are excited for the community to enjoy stepping back to the time of the Cold War onboard this piece of living history! With Jacksonville’s large Naval community, we feel the Orleck is a fitting tribute and terrific match to call Jacksonville home!

Black Raven Adventures

Took my daughter and 2 grandsons (7 & 3) on a mini adventure for a week and the Black Raven’s Treasure Hunt was the favorite activity by far. The boys are still talking like pirates and can’t wait to go back!!! The interactive show was awesome and the entire crew made the day amazing!

We did the Night of Lights tour and it was AWESOME! The crew was fantastic and so much fun they were perfectly piratey, but also able to turn it off and make recommendations for other things in the area or to point out the dolphins swimming off the sides of the boat. It was great for kids and adults and we can’t wait to come back and do the “regular” ride with the show.

Thank you all for the wonderful elopement wedding in a lightning storm! Also, thanks for the trash bag for me to wear with the dress!! Haha! The most memorable wedding in history, I think! Timothy and I appreciate everything! We shall be back!!

We did the evening tour and it was absolutely awesome and funny. We had a great time and the dirty jokes and songs were a lot of fun! Recommended for folks who are not easily offended and enjoy dirty jokes and good humor!

The 21+ rum runner cruise was AMAZING! We had so much fun. Drinks/Bartender was A++ and the prices were great. The skits, jokes and songs are absolutely hilarious. We highly recommend this to the adult crowd. Even though it was quite chilly, we had a blast. Can’t wait to do it again when we travel back from Western NC. 100% great time.

I originally thought that this was a little pricey, but how wrong I was. This show was well worth the money. The crew of the black raven were great and made you laugh. The show lasts about an hour and a half, but it seemed like it was about half hour. That is how good the show was, THANK YOU to the crew of the Black Raven.

a boat is docked next to a body of water

Engaged pirate characters, smooth sailing, and guides pointed put dolphins and even alerted us to a rocket launch that was visible in the sky. Additionally the Captain maneuvered the ship as much as possible so that we could capture the sunset almost aligned with the light house. Weather was fair as well and the holiday lights were very visible on the shore. Much more than I would ever have expected! Aarrggh!

Coast Guard suspends search for Carnival Cruise Line passenger who went overboard

ship tour jacksonville fl

A Carnival Cruise Line passenger went overboard on the line’s Carnival Magic ship on Monday.

Ronnie Peale, 35, went overboard 186 miles east of Jacksonville, Florida, the U.S. Coast Guard said. The Coast Guard suspended its search Wednesday after crews searched over 5,171 square miles.

“The decision to suspend the active search efforts pending further development is never one we take lightly," Lt. Cmdr. Christopher Hooper, Coast Guard District Seven search and rescue mission coordinator, said in a news release . "We offer our most sincere condolences to Mr. Peale’s family and friends.”

“He was reported missing by his companion late Monday afternoon and an initial review of closed circuit security footage confirms that he leaned over the railing of his stateroom balcony and dropped into the water at approximately 4:10 a.m. Monday,” a Carnival spokesperson said in an emailed statement.

The Coast Guard released the ship from search and rescue efforts and advised its captain to continue on to Norfolk, Virginia, the spokesperson said. The vessel was on a round-trip sailing from Norfolk to the Bahamas at the time of the incident, according to CruiseMapper .

Cruise ship medical facilities: What happens if you get sick or injured (or bitten by a monkey)

“The Carnival Care Team is providing support to the guest's companion and traveling party who are on board,” the spokesperson added.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation's Norfolk field office is investigating, with the help of other agencies, according to a spokesperson.

"The FBI typically has jurisdiction to investigate incidents on the high seas, and works closely with our partners in law enforcement and in the cruising industry to collect the evidence and facts of cases," the spokesperson said in an email, though they did not have additional details to share.

The incident comes after other overboard reports in recent months. The Coast Guard suspended search efforts for a Royal Caribbean International passenger who went overboard during a trans-Pacific sailing in April, and a woman died after going overboard on MSC Cruises’ Meraviglia vessel near Florida’s Port Canaveral in December.

Another Carnival passenger was rescued after going overboard from the line’s Carnival Valor ship in November.

Between 2009 and 2019, there were 212 overboard incidents around the world involving passengers and crew, according to statistics compiled for Cruise Lines International Association by consulting firm G.P. Wild (International) Ltd. Just 48 people were rescued.

Cruise ships have safeguards in place to keep passengers from going overboard and are required by the Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act of 2010 to have rails that are "located not less than 42 inches above the cabin deck."

Cmdr. Jason Kling, Detachment Chief at the U.S. Coast Guard's Cruise Ship National Center of Expertise, which conducts compliance inspections of cruise ships embarking passengers in U.S. ports or embarking U.S. passengers, told USA TODAY in March that many cruise ships complied with that even before the law was enacted.

Search suspended for man who fell overboard from Carnival cruise ship near Florida

Ronnie Peale Jr., 35, fell over his balcony railing on Monday, Carnival said.

The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended its search for a Virginia man who fell from a cruise ship balcony earlier this week.

Ronnie Peale Jr., 35, went overboard from a Carnival Magic cruise ship traveling off the coast of Florida on Monday, the Coast Guard said.

After searching more than 5,171 square miles over the course of 60 hours, the Coast Guard said Wednesday night that it has suspended search efforts for Peale.

"The decision to suspend the active search efforts pending further development is never one we take lightly," Coast Guard District Seven search and rescue mission coordinator Lt. Cmdr. Christopher Hooper said in a statement . "We offer our most sincere condolences to Mr. Peale's family and friends."

Carnival Cruise Lines personnel contacted Coast Guard watchstanders at 6:36 p.m. on Monday to report that a passenger had fallen off the ship, which was 186 miles east of Jacksonville, the Coast Guard said.

Peale's companion reported him missing late Monday afternoon and "an initial review of closed circuit security footage confirms that he leaned over the railing of his stateroom balcony and dropped into the water at approximately 4:10 a.m. Monday," Carnival Cruise Line said in a statement to ABC News.

His partner, Jennilyn Blosser, told Richmond ABC affiliate WRIC that the footage showed him leaning over the railing and that it looks like he accidentally fell.

"It's not like he was like jumping, like you know, it wasn't like that at all," Blosser told the station.

Blosser said she woke up at 11:30 a.m. that morning and spent hours trying to find Peale. His mother, Linda Peale, told WRIC she knew something was wrong when her son didn't call that day to check in on his dogs.

Peale, from New Hope, Virginia, was on his first cruise and was celebrating Blosser's birthday with her family, Linda Peale said.

She described her son as "full of life" and someone who loved old cars, gardening and cooking.

"My son was a wonderful man," Linda Peale told WRIC.

Celebrity ascent: the best dining, amenities and more on celebrity cruises' newest ship.

Top-notch eateries, adults-only areas and entertainment options stand out.

Celebrity Ascent Review

The Solarium on the Celebrity Ascent.

Megan duBois

Key Takeaways

  • There are 32 different dining and drinking venues on board, from Le Voyage by celebrity chef Daniel Boulud to the line's iconic Martini Bar.
  • The onboard entertainment is incredible. The "Awaken" show combines popular music with acrobatics and lasers, while Ascent After Dark: Shine the Night invites cruisers to don metallic or sequin outfits for a deck party under the stars.
  • The Solarium adults-only pool area is a relaxing spot with comfortable lounge chairs, a pool and hot tubs; head to Eden for delightful cocktails and optimal sunset views.

You can think of Celebrity Cruises as the more adult cousin of Royal Caribbean International – which makes sense, considering both cruise lines are owned by Royal Caribbean Group. With all of the recent buzz around both brands, I was excited to sail on Celebrity Cruises' newest ship, Celebrity Ascent, in its debut month. I embarked out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in December 2023.

The 17-deck, 141,420-ton ship has 1,646 staterooms and can carry 3,260 guests at double occupancy. At 1,073 feet long and 128 feet wide, the ship has plenty of space for upscale amenities, edgy entertainment and incredible dining venues. The Edge Series ship also has more than 1,400 crew members who hail from 60 different countries around the world.

As an avid cruiser who has taken more than 50 ocean and river voyages on almost a dozen cruise lines, I found Celebrity Ascent lived up to the hype. The ship itself is stunning, and each area has a distinct vibe. I loved the ample amount of food and drink opportunities – there are 32 different venues – and the standout onboard entertainment was like nothing I had seen before on a cruise ship.

Celebrity Ascent itineraries

Thermal suite heated loungers on the Celebrity Ascent.

Celebrity Ascent sails around the Mediterranean and the Caribbean over the next few years. Summer 2024 brings Ascent to Mediterranean ports of call in Greece, Turkey, Italy, France, Spain and Portugal. The Mediterranean season ends in October 2024, with a 13-night transatlantic sailing departing from Barcelona, Spain.

Late fall and winter sailings depart from Fort Lauderdale. The Caribbean season runs between November 2024 and April 2025. It includes seven- to nine-night voyages calling on ports like Aruba , Bonaire and Curacao ; Bimini, Bahamas ; Labadee, Haiti; Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands ; Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic ; and St. Maarten and St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

In late April 2025, it's back to the Mediterranean for the 2025 season between May and October. Ascent then returns to the Caribbean for sailings in late 2025; destinations include southern Caribbean locales, plus the Panama Canal and Royal Caribbean's private island in the Bahamas, Perfect Day at CocoCay. Similar Caribbean sailings are also on sale for early 2026.

Who should sail on Celebrity Ascent?

Sunset Bar on the Celebrity Ascent.

Celebrity Ascent, like its Edge Series sister ships, caters to adults traveling together. The overall vibe of the ship is upscale and modern, with plenty of places to grab a drink, enjoy a meal and watch a show. Couples can enjoy an elevated date night in Le Grand Bistro, while the aptly named Sunset Bar – which overlooks the rear of the ship – is the spot to be with a cocktail in hand as the sun sets into the horizon. This bar was easily my favorite spot on board; I spent most afternoons here enjoying a cocktail.

The deck parties, of which Ascent After Dark: Shine the Night is the premier event, are a fun time – but they aren't so loud that guests can hear the bass thumping in the staterooms below. Shows at The Theatre are fully immersive, with incredible technology and great music that had me dancing in my seat.

If you are traveling with children, know that there aren't many places on board for kids to just hang out and be kids. The Camp at Sea kids club is crammed into a small area on Deck 3, away from the main Grand Plaza and The Martini Bar.

Cruises on Ascent can be expensive, but Celebrity often runs deals on sailings. Without any promotions, sailings around the Mediterranean in 2024 and 2025 may run between about $1,000 and $5,600 per person. In comparison, 2024 and 2025 Caribbean voyages may cost between about $2,000 and $4,400 per person before discounts. (Note: Cruise rates can change frequently, based on demand and availability.)

The stateroom

Stateroom interior on the Celebrity Ascent.

There are over two dozen different stateroom styles on Celebrity Ascent. The smallest (and usually cheapest) rooms are the Inside Staterooms, which offer between 181 and 202 square feet of space. For solo travelers, the Single Inside Staterooms offer the same amenities as a double occupancy room, but with a smaller 103-square-foot layout and no single supplement fee at booking.

Ocean View Staterooms are slightly larger, at 200 to 242 square feet. There are three different room styles; the main difference among them is the size of the window. Options range from small windows in the middle of the wall to large, floor-to-ceiling picture windows.

Ascent's balcony cabins are quite varied, but the majority are Infinite Veranda Staterooms, where the balcony is actually a uniquely designed window that can be opened to let the ocean breeze in. There is a set of glass doors that can be drawn to make this space more private, as well.

Concierge Staterooms allow guests access to a dedicated concierge staff and exclusive onboard events. AquaClass cabins all feature the infinite balcony design, plus unlimited access to the SEA Thermal Suite, complimentary dining at Blu restaurant, fitness classes and a spa concierge.

Celebrity Ascent's suites are all part of The Retreat, the line's ship-within-a-ship concept where cruisers have access to an exclusive restaurant, a sun deck with a pool, a lounge and a dedicated crew. Suites range in size and style, from smaller 319-square-foot studios to massive two-bedroom suites offering more than 2,500 square feet of indoor and outdoor space.

When I sailed on Celebrity Ascent, I stayed in an AquaClass stateroom. The main living space had a king-size bed, which was cozy after long days of exploring the ship and nights spent on the dance floor. I found the cabin's couch a bit uncomfortable, but there was plenty of storage space in the large closet and drawers. Conveniently, the bed was high enough to fit my suitcases under.

Because this was my first time in an Infinite Veranda room, I was interested to see how the balcony actually worked. After pressing a button for the window to roll down, my room instantly filled with humid air – not the sea breeze I was expecting. The air conditioner also turns off when the window is down, so it takes a long time for the room to cool off again. I only opened the window once because of this. For me, the extra veranda space served as more of a sitting area to take in the views than a spot to enjoy the ocean breeze.

My stateroom's bathroom was spacious, with a larger-than-usual standup rain shower. I also loved the eco-friendly bath amenities, which smelled divine. I used the in-room bathrobes and slippers every day of the cruise.

I loved that my AquaClass stateroom came with some amenities that are not included in other Infinite Veranda rooms. There were two yoga mats, two bottles of water that were refreshed daily, a welcome bottle of sparkling wine, an umbrella, binoculars, complimentary shoeshine service and a pillow menu. AquaClass guests also have unlimited access to the spa's thermal suite, complimentary fitness classes and a dedicated spa concierge. I went to the thermal suite daily to enjoy the heated loungers and steam rooms.

Best amenities on Celebrity Ascent

Theater show on the Celebrity Ascent.

On Celebrity Ascent, you'll never be bored. Over just a few days, I was able to participate in game shows and dance parties, sit back and enjoy live music, and spend some time by the pool. While I don't gamble, the casino always seemed to be full when I walked by, and someone was always cheering about hitting the jackpot.

For live entertainment, be sure to catch Flash Flair Fusion, the nightly bartending performance at the Martini Bar. Meanwhile, the Theatre hosted three main shows during my sailing: "Residency," "Awaken" and "Bridges." (Based on my experience, "Awaken" is the production to prioritize.)

Additionally, The Club hosts most of the ship's game shows and some smaller live music events. I loved hanging out at this venue; it was never overly packed with people, and the games were pure fun. I even got called up on stage to participate in one of the games and ended up winning a Celebrity Cruises-branded hat.

For some outdoor fun, hit the onboard pickleball court. Or, head to the Rooftop Garden, where float pools face the ocean and plenty of comfy seating awaits. I loved how lush this space felt, thanks to all of the live plants surrounding the seating areas. This is also the spot to catch movies at night.

If you're looking for an even more unique place to hang out, head to The Magic Carpet. This bright orange, glass-encased bar hangs out over the side of the ship and is the perfect spot for an after-dinner drink. The Magic Carpet can move up and down the side of the ship, docking at select decks for a set amount of time. I loved hanging here at night as the ship was pulling out of port to see the islands light up and watch other ships pass by.

When planning out your evenings, keep in mind that it can be a trek to get from one onboard activity to the next – especially when there is very little time between many of the major scheduled events. One night, I started in The Club to watch a game show, then immediately had to get to the Theatre. After the theater performance, I had to walk the entire length of the ship and take the stairs to get to the night show in Eden. Then, after Eden, it was time for the Shine the Night deck party. By the time I got back to my stateroom, I was exhausted.

Best dining venues on Celebrity Ascent

Pastries at Le Grand Bistro on the Celebrity Ascent.

There are 32 different spots for food and drinks on Celebrity Ascent, including four main dining rooms; four casual complimentary eateries; eight specialty restaurants; 14 cafes, lounges and bars; and two exclusive venues.

Included with the base fare are meals at the four main dining rooms, all of which serve the same menus every day, plus a small exclusive menu that's tailored to the theme of each restaurant. (For example, if you're dining in Cyprus, there is a small list of Cyprus-exclusive dishes that highlight Mediterranean cuisine, while the Normandie restaurant serves up French favorites.)

Other restaurants included in the cruise rate are Eden Cafe & Bar, which serves light bites and sweets; Mast Grill, offering burgers and salads; and Oceanview Cafe, a buffet open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

For an additional cost, head to specialty dining venues like the stunning Le Voyage by Daniel Boulud, which is great for date night; Le Grand Bistro, a fun take on a classic French Bistro; or Eden Restaurant, which features an entirely plant-based menu.

My favorite specialty dining option – and overall favorite restaurant on the ship – was Raw on 5. It features stunning chilled seafood towers, fresh sashimi and hot dishes like fresh lobster and shrimp wontons. Each dish was prepared beautifully, the service was top-notch and our table next to the window offered great views.

However, one restaurant I would skip is Fine Cut Steakhouse. It is a pretty standard steakhouse, and nothing on the menu really stood out to me. The upscale ambiance was also diminished by music floating in from the nearby Grand Plaza and Martini Bar (think: everything from One Direction to Cher). While both artists are great to hear while sipping a martini in a public space, I don't want to hear them while dining at an expensive restaurant.

Best excursions on Celebrity Ascent

Outdoor sundeck on the Celebrity Ascent.

Travelers cruising to the Caribbean should book a beach outing. There are abundant excursion options in St. Maarten and St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands . If you're into local brews, try the Small Group: Brewery & Beach Tour Philipsburg, St. Maarten .

On a past Mediterranean cruise, I explored both Florence and Pisa, Italy, while docked in the Italian city of Livorno. Celebrity offers a similar excursion aboard the Ascent. The day trip includes a scenic drive through the Tuscan countryside; exploring Florence and seeing the Ponte Vecchio and the Duomo; and a trip to Pisa to see the iconic learning tower. In Rome , consider doing an all-day tour where you can see the Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain and St. Peter's Square.

Regardless of where your cruise is headed, you may choose to explore ports on your own instead. If that's the case, be sure to give yourself enough time to get back to the ship. I always try to return at least an hour before the scheduled sail away time.

Overall impressions of Celebrity Ascent

Rooftop Garden on the Celebrity Ascent.

When it comes to ships that cater to a mostly adult audience, Celebrity Ascent really has it all. From stunning common areas to incredible dining and entertainment, I was never bored on this ship. What I loved most was the wide range of entertainment, from pop-up music around the ship to full-blown experiences that need to be seen to be believed. The food on the ship is a step above most other major cruise lines, and the number of dining options is great, especially for longer sailings.

While I loved my room's location and amenities as a whole, I found the Infinite Veranda design to be a bit of a waste. When I did use it, my room got hot quickly and took a while to cool back down. I would consider booking a traditional veranda cabin next time, or a stateroom with a large picture window to save some money without sacrificing the ocean views.
