safari youtube 4k not available

Just like the title says. Youtube is not playing 4k in Safari (version 15.5) on Mac OS Monterey 12.4. Can someone please advice how to fix this. I am already aware of the Develop Menu and checking off BOTH "VP9 decoder" options as well as checking off "HDR Media capabilities." options.

Here's what you need to do: Open Safari. Navigate to youtube.com. Find a video with 4K content available . There is a "4K" tag available next compatible videos. Click the Gear icon under the video. Select Quality. Scroll up and look for the highest-quality video resolution.

The upgrade will be available to all Mac users who upgrade to Big Sur this fall. Safari is finally going to be able to play YouTube in 4K on the Mac. I think I may have found a solution to your problem! I had the exact same issue as you. Here's what I did: Quit Safari. Open safari. Click Develop>Experimental Features> Uncheck "VP9 decoder" and "VP9 SW Decoder on Battery". Quit Safari. open safari. Click Develop>Experimental Features>Recheck "Vp9 Decoder" and "VP9 SW Decoder on Battery".

A couple things to keep in mind is if the video wasn't uploaded in 4K you wouldn't be able to choose that as an option. And second, this is a setting for Safari, so double check your Safari settings Advanced > Experimental Features > Vp9 Decode and then go to YouTube and Safari and make sure it's the desktop site.

In other words, you'll have to use a non-Apple browser to play YouTube videos in 1440p, 2160p (4K) or higher quality on your Mac. Developer Maxim Ananov has made a cool Safari extension that helps with that. Enter 4Ktube for Safari. Not sure myself as I'm still running the beta but try this out. I honestly don't know if develop menu is possible for non beta releases, forgive me if it is not there. Safari > Preferences > Advanced > ️ show develop menu in menu bar Then Develop > experimental features > ️ VP9 Decoder on battery and ️VP9 decoder

Safari has no VP9 support (at least in my version, still on Safari 9.1 / El Capitan) so it gets automatically served a H264 version from Youtube (you can verify codec by right clicking > stats for nerds).
