What is Endnote Click?

Endnote Click is a  free browser extension tool that you can sign up for.  It works when you are on a journal article page e.g. Science Direct, Nature, PLoS, Taylor & Francis, Wiley etc. and pops up on your screen with a link to the .pdf.

It also has its .pdf store ('locker') so it can be used without an Endnote Online account as a way to store useful articles (although it does not do referencing on its own).

Endnote Click links with the UJ  Library subscriptions and will find the 'best quality' .pdf for you: a library subscription version or an Open Access version.

Installation

EndNote Clic k  is available for downloading on Chrome, Firefox and Edge and Opera.

  • Download EndNote Click for  Chrome
  • Download EndNote Click for  Firefox
  • Download EndNote Click for  Edge
  • F or Opera,  you will need to add an extension called  Chrome extensions first, then get EndNote Click for Chrome.

Customising your EndNote Click

When you sign up for EndNote Click, you will be prompted to choose your preferred reference manager. Opt for EndNote and so that you can export references directly to EndNote Desktop. To adjust this setting in your EndNote Click account:

1.  Navigate to Settings, then click on Customise in the left-hand menu.

2. From there, choose EndNote from the Reference Manager Integration dropdown menu.

How to create an EndNote Click account

1. Go to the EndNote Click web page  and click on the create account button. After installation, you can pin the plugin to the add-in area. Look out for the EndNote Click button when on journal websites.

Alternatively, you can find it under the Tools menu in EndNote Desktop or by signing into your Clarivate Web of Science account and then clicking on products.

See the video below for the steps on how to create an account.

How to use EndNote Click

When you are looking at an article record on an academic journal website or database, EndNote Click will show a pop-up icon on the left-hand side of the screen if there is a UJ subscribed or freely available PDF version of the article.

Click on the pop-up icon, and it will add the article to your locker, which is the storage area in EndNote Click. On the left-hand side menu of your locker, there is an option to 'Export to EndNote Desktop'. Clicking on this option will create a RIS file that you can save and add to your library, similar to other online export methods. There is also an option to 'Push to EndNote Web'.

This process will also attach the PDF to the reference in your EndNote library. Keep in mind that the free version of EndNote Click only provides you with 100 MB of storage in your locker. Therefore, once you have added the reference to your EndNote library, you may want to delete the PDF from your EndNote Click locker.

Using browser extensions to access eJournal articles

  • Introduction
  • LibKey Nomad

What is EndNote Click?

How to install endnote click, how to use endnote click, endnote click and interlibrary loans, using the endnote click locker, using endnote click with endnote reference management software.

EndNote Click - formerly known as Kopernio - is a browser extension that helps provide direct access to electronic journal articles that University of Birmingham Library Services subscribes to, or to an Open Access version. It functions similarly to LibKey Nomad - albeit as well as providing access to the article PDF, it also allows users to send the reference for the article to the reference management tools EndNote Desktop or EndNote Online . The other key difference is that  unlike LibKey Nomad it requires users to set up a personal EndNote Click account before they can get started. Library Services particularly recommends using EndNote Click if you are using the current version of EndNote Desktop (also known as EndNote 20).

If you are using the EndNote Desktop reference management software, EndNote Click should install automatically when you download EndNote 20 (the current version of EndNote Desktop). If it does not install automatically you can initiate the installation within EndNote 20 itself by going to the 'Tools' menu and selecting 'Install EndNote Click Browser Extension'.

Shows the Tools menu in EndNote 20 with the 'Install EndNote Click Browser Extension' option highlighted.

If you are not a user of EndNote Desktop but would like to install the EndNote Click browser extension, you can do so by going to the relevant store for your web browser. EndNote Click is available on Google Chrome , Microsoft Edge , Firefox , and Opera (note that you will need to get a Chrome extension for Opera first , and then get EndNote Click for Chrome).

Once EndNote Click has installed you will be prompted to create an EndNote Click account.

Shows the details required to setup an EndNote Click account.

Finally, once you have registered an EndNote Click account you will need to lookup and select University of Birmingham as your home institution.

Menu prompt to look up institution.

You're now ready to start using EndNote Click. Just note that when you use EndNote Click off campus for the first time, you will be prompted to login to the library with your university credentials so that EndNote Click can connect to the university's subscriptions.

If you are browsing an article on a publisher's site and haven't logged in via FindIt@Bham, you may be met with a paywall when trying to access the full-text of an article.

Example of a paywall when trying to access an electronic journal article.

However, this doesn't necessarily mean that University of Birmingham doesn't have subscribed access to the article, or that an Open Access version of the article is not available. If subscribed access or open access to the article is available, the following EndNote Click icon will appear in the bottom left corner of the browser.

EndNote Click 'View PDF' button

Selecting 'View PDF' will open the article PDF within the 'My Locker' section of your EndNote Click account. From here you can download and/or print the PDF, or you can use the 'My Locker' functionality to manage the PDF in a different way (for example, saving the PDF and reference to your EndNote 20 library). See the 'Using the EndNote Click Locker' section of this guide for more information.

The version of the article that the 'View PDF' button directs you to will vary depending on whether: Library Services has subscribed access to the published 'Version of Record' (Figure 1 in the images below); whether the final 'Version of Record' has been published on an Open Access basis (Figure 2 in the images below); or where an Open Access version of the 'author accepted manuscript' (AAM) has been archived in a repository (Figure 3 in the images below). An AAM is likely to have been peer reviewed even if the content has not been formatted for publication. Hovering over the 'View PDF' button will give you an indication as to which version you will be linked to.

Shows PDF versions depending on whether article is publisher version, publisher Open Access version, or repository Open Access version.

There will be occasions when EndNote Click cannot find a PDF for the article you are browsing on a publisher's website. In this scenario you will find that the EndNote Click symbol is slow to appear, and when it does, it will not have the 'View PDF' tag attached to it. Similarly, when you hover over the EndNote Click symbol there are crosses next to all the options with 'PDF not found' labelled across the top.

Click symbol when no PDF has found displaying 'PDF not found' options.

When this happens, it does not necessarily mean that Library Services does not have access to the full text of the article. It could be the case that Library Services has subscribed access to the article via another platform that EndNote Click is not compatible with, or access is available from a platform that makes the full-text available in HTML form only. In this situation we recommend that you perform an Article Search within FindIt@Bham to check if Library Services has full-text access to the article via another platform. The video below demonstrates how to perform an article search within FindIt@Bham.

Should FindIt@Bham confirm that Library Services does not have access to the article, you can then explore whether to request an Interlibrary Loan. For more information on Interlibrary loans please see our Interlibrary Loans and Document Supply webpages , or watch the below video demonstrating how to use FindIt@Bham to make an Interlibrary Loan request.

As stated in the 'How to use EndNote Click' section of this guide, once you opt to 'View PDF' from EndNote Click, the PDF opens within your personal EndNote Click locker. The EndNote Click locker is an area that automatically saves the articles you access via the EndNote Click extension, which has the advantage of allowing you to come back to your locker at any time to read the full-text of articles previously accessed. You can access your EndNote Click Locker by selecting the EndNote Click icon pinned to the top of your web browser, and selecting 'My Locker'.

Shows the EndNote Click menu that appears when selecting the Click extension icon, with the 'My Locker' tab ready to be selected.

As well as using the EndNote Click Locker to view saved PDFs, you can also use this space to:

  • Download PDFs so that you can save them to your computer;
  • Export articles to a reference management tool like EndNote, Zotero or Mendeley;
  • Use tags to organise the articles in your locker.

To use any of these features simply load up an article within your EndNote Click locker and use the menu that appears on the left-hand side of the page to select the feature you wish to use.

Menu options that appear when opening an article PDF within your EndNote Click Locker

You can use your EndNote Click locker to export articles into both EndNote Desktop (current version EndNote 20) and EndNote Online . This has the advantage of saving not just the reference information, but also the article PDF for that reference, into your EndNote library.

To do this, start by loading up the article you wish to export into EndNote within your EndNote Click locker. The menu that appears on the left-hand side of the page includes options to both 'Export to EndNote Desktop' and 'Push to EndNote Web'. Selecting 'Export to EndNote Desktop' will download the reference and PDF as a .RIS file. If you have EndNote Desktop installed, opening the .RIS file will automatically open EndNote Desktop and import the reference and PDF into your library. (Note that the screenshot below exemplifies downloading and opening the reference when working with Google Chrome).

Highlights process of selecting 'Export to EndNote Desktop' to download and open a .RIS file.

Selecting 'Push to EndNote Web' allows you to export the reference and PDF to an EndNote Online account. The first time you select 'Push to EndNote Web' you will be prompted to login to EndNote Online.

Selecting 'Push to EndNote Web' prompts a login for EndNote Online

You will then need to authorise the connection between your EndNote Click account and your EndNote Online account.

Prompt to authorise connection between EndNote Click and EndNote Online.

Once authorised, you will then be prompted to select which group in your EndNote Online library you would like to add the reference and PDF to.

Prompt to choose which EndNote Online group to add reference and PDF to.

The reference and PDF will then be pushed to your EndNote Online account (note that this won't automatically open your EndNote Online library). With the connection between your EndNote Click and EndNote Online accounts now established, the next time you want to push an article reference and PDF into EndNote Online you will notice that your EndNote Click menu has updated with an embedded option to select a group from your EndNote Online library to push the reference and PDF into.

Embedded 'Push to EndNote Web' button with EndNote Online library group 'Systematic Reviews' selected.

Q. How do I uninstall or disable EndNote Click?

A. To uninstall, right click on the EndNote Click icon. On Google Chrome select 'Remove from Chrome' on the menu that appears. On Firefox the option will be 'Remove extension'.

Indicates how EndNote Click could be removed from Google Chrome

You can also uninstall EndNote Click via your browser’s web extension store and select ‘remove from...’. See Clarivate's EndNote Click in Two Minutes guide for links to each available browser store for EndNote Click.

To disable EndNote Click (rather than uninstall it), right click on the EndNote Click icon and select 'Manage Extension'. On Google Chrome, for example, this will open up a menu that will allow you to switch EndNote Click off.

Shows EndNote Click disabled or switched off within Google Chrome.

Q. Can I use EndNote Click with a reference management tool other than EndNote?

EndNote Click's reference manager integration section showing options for EndNote, Mendeley and Zotero.

Q. What is EndNote Click Premium?

A. The version of EndNote Click you download is a free version that comes with 100 MB of storage in the 'My Locker' area for the purpose of saving PDFs (note that EndNote Click auto-saves PDFs you access to your Locker, which will use up storage faster - see the next FAQ for details of how to disable this feature). EndNote Click Premium is a service that upgrades you to 2GB of storage and also allows some integration with Dropbox. The Premium feature is unlocked when you refer a friend so that they start using EndNote Click as well. Unlocking Premium is entirely optional, but if you wish to refer a friend to unlock it you can access a personal referral code in the 'Account' area of your EndNote Click Locker. For more information visit the EndNote Click Premium webpage .

Q. How do I stop EndNote Click automatically saving PDFs to the My locker area?

A. While saving the PDFs to your EndNote Click Locker can be useful, this might lead to you maxing out your 100MB limit of storage over time. To prevent this, you can choose to switch the automatic saving of PDFs off (note that you can choose to manually save a PDF to your My Locker area when viewing the PDF in the PDF viewer). To turn off the auto-save feature, open your EndNote Click account, go to 'Settings', and in the 'Locker Usage' section unselect the tick box next to the 'Always save PDFs to my locker' option.

Indicates Locker Usage area of Settings with auto-save PDFs feature turned off.

For more information visit the Clarivate webpage ' How can I choose which PDFs to save to my locker '.

Creating and setting up an EndNote library

Adding references to your library, creating and formatting a bibliography.

  • Additional EndNote Resources
  • Endnote Online

Creating an EndNote library

1. Open EndNote by double-clicking on the EndNote icon in your Applications folder OR by typing ⌘-spacebar and typing "EndNote" into Spotlight Search.

2. Depending on the program's preferences, you may see differing options here: the most recently-used library may open or you may see a blank EndNote application window. To create a new library, go to File > New .

File menu

3. Name your library (the default name for any new library is "My EndNote Library"), check the Save as Package box and and pick a location on your computer's local hard drive where the library will be saved.

safari endnote extension

4. Click Save .

Setting up an EndNote library

Once you have created a library, there are a number of functions and options built into EndNote that allow you to optimize and customize your library.

Choosing and customizing Display Fields

You can choose up to ten fields to display as column headings in your library (note: all fields will still appear within each Reference)

1. Go to EndNote X9 > Preferences .

2. Choose Display Fields from the left-hand list.

safari endnote extension

3. Choose your desired field for each column from the drop-down menus. Note: If you want to remove a column so that fewer than ten fields appear, you can choose " [Do not display] " from the drop-down menu.

4. You can also choose to display Custom fields and rename those fields as desired by changing the name in the Heading column.

Using the Find Full Text function

EndNote can look for the full text of articles freely available on the internet and articles available through the OHSU Library's journal holdings.

1. Go to EndNote X9 > Preferences

2. Choose Find Full Text

3. Make sure these options are checked: DOI, PubMed LinkOut and OpenURL.

4. In the OpenURL Path box, if it does not already appear there, paste the following link:  https://librarysearch.ohsu.edu/openurl/01ALLIANCE_OHSU/01ALLIANCE_OHSU:OHSU?

5. In the Authenticate With box, use this link: https://login.liboff.ohsu.edu/login?url=

safari endnote extension

6. If desired, check the "Automatically invoke Find Full Text on newly-imported references." If this box is checked, EndNote will automatically search for a .pdf version of References imported into your EndNote library and attach it to the Reference in question.

Using Term Lists

1. To ensure that your bibliographies will be formatted correctly, you should import a journal term list before you add any references to your library. The journal Term List includes journal name abbreviations, which may differ according to the bibliographic style used (NLM, APA, etc.)

2. Go to the Tools menu, Open Terms Lists , and then Journals Term List .

safari endnote extension

3. A blank table will appear. Click the Lists tab, then click Import List ... button.

safari endnote extension

4. Navigate to your EndNote folder: Applications > EndNote X9  and open the Terms folder. Select the subject area for the type of references you will be working with (Medical, Chemical, BioSciences, etc.)

safari endnote extension

5. The table will be populated with full journal titles and their official abbreviations.

6. You can repeat these steps to include more than one journal list.

There are multiple methods for adding references to an EndNote library. References can be manually added to a library, imported from a database such as PubMed, or they can be added directly from the EndNote interface.

Manually adding a reference

References can be manually added one at a time to EndNote. This is the most labor-intensive and, in most cases, least efficient method of adding references. Manual entry of references should only be used when you are otherwise unable to locate the reference in a database.

1. In EndNote, go to References > New Reference

2. A blank New Reference box will pop up.  Select the correct Reference Type (the default is Journal Article). You can then manually add information about author, date, title, etc.

safari endnote extension

3. There is no need to save the reference, it will be automatically saved when the New Reference box is closed (by clicking the red button in the top left corner of the box).

Importing references from a database search

PubMed MEDLINE

When searching PubMed, there are two ways to save citations into your EndNote library. If you are working with fewer than 200 results, you will likely want to use the Citation manager option. For result sets greater than 200, you will likely want to use the plain text file method. Before importing/exporting results, be sure you have the latest EndNote import filters for the databases you are searching installed on your computer.

Citation Manager option in PubMed (use this method if you have LESS than 200 PubMed citations to add to EndNote)

1. Perform your search in PubMed.

2. Select the references you want to save.

3. From the Send to drop-down menu, choose Citation manager. If you have an option to choose the Number to send, be sure it will capture all of your search results (e.g. if you have 75 results, Number to send should be at least 100).

safari endnote extension

4. Click Create File

5. Depending on your browser, the next steps will vary:

6. In Firefox, select Open with and click the Choose button. Navigate to select the EndNote program and click OK .

safari endnote extension

7. In Safari, the file containing your citations will be automatically downloaded to your Downloads folder (or other destination, according to your browser settings). Once downloaded, open the file. You may get a message that says There is no application set to open the document "citations.nbib. "

safari endnote extension

8. If you get this message, click the Choose Application button and navigate to the EndNote program and click Open .

Choose application dialog

9. If EndNote is open on your computer, the citations will import into the open EndNote library. If EndNote is not open, you will be asked to choose a library to which the citations will be added.

Exporting References from PubMed as a Plain Text File (use this methods if you have MORE than 200 PubMed citations to add to EndNote)

2. Select the references you want to save. If you want to export the entire result set do not select any references .

3. From the  Send to  drop-down menu, choose  File .

4. From the Format  drop-down menu, choose MEDLINE .

5. Click  Create File .

safari endnote extension

6. Depending on your browser setting, the file may automatically be saved in your Downloads folder. If prompted, save the downloaded file to your desktop, downloads folder, or other easily discoverable location.

safari endnote extension

7. In EndNote choose File > Import.

8. Locate the file you just downloaded (it will have an .txt extension) and select it.

9. In the Import Options field choose PubMed (NLM) . Note: the first time you do this, you will need to choose Other Filters and then select PubMed (NLM) from the list of import filter options.

safari endnote extension

10. Click Import and the records will be imported into your EndNote library.

Importing references from other databases

Ovid databases

Ovid databases (e.g. Ovid MEDLINE, PsycINFO, etc.) available to OHSU library users include an option for direct export into EndNote.

1. Perform your search and select the references you want to save.

2. On your desktop, open the destination EndNote library for the references.

3. In Ovid, select Export .

4. In the Export Citation List box, select Export To > EndNote . If you want to include all of the citation information, be sure to choose Select Fields to Display > Complete Reference .

safari endnote extension

5. Click the Export Citations button.

6. Depending on your browser, the next steps will vary. Follow the same procedure described above in the Citation Manager option in PubMed section.

OHSU Library Catalog

References to books and other materials in the OHSU Library catalog can be added to EndNote using the Export feature.

1. Search the library catalog for your item.

2. Once you have identified the appropriate book or other record, find the "..." button near the right side of the page.

safari endnote extension

3. Select Export RIS (Note: Using the End Note export option in the drop-down box will direct you to EndNote's web version. Do not use this method if you want to add the reference to an EndNote library on your hard drive.)

safari endnote extension

4. A download box will open; select an encoding if one is not already (UTF-8 is usually a safe choice) and click Download .

safari endnote extension

5. Save the RIS file to an easily discoverable location.

safari endnote extension

6. In EndNote, choose File > Import.

7. Locate the file you just downloaded (it will have an .ris extension) and select it.

8. In the Import Options field choose RefMan RIS. Note: the first time you do this, you will need to choose Other Filters and then select RefMan RIS from the list of import filter options. Click Import .

safari endnote extension

Other databases

The steps for importing references from other databases accessible through the OHSU Library follow the same basic principles as those for importing references from PubMed. Once you have identified a set of references you want to add to your EndNote library, you need to export those references by creating and downloading a file to be imported into EndNote. It is important that the correct Import Filter is selected in EndNote in order for EndNote to be able to read the file that is being imported. The Import Filter you choose will be determined by the database.

Adding references directly from EndNote

You can also search databases such as PubMed directly in EndNote and add references from there. This method should generally not be our first choice method for adding references, and is most effective when you are searching for a specific reference that you know, for example, is indexed in PubMed. EndNote created a guide which provides detailed instructions on how to search for and add references directly from EndNote.

Adding a reference from a .pdf

You can create a new reference directly from a pdf in many cases. EndNote uses the Digital Object Identifier (DOI) that is embedded in the .pdf to create a new reference. If the .pdf does not have a DOI, the PDF will be imported, but you will need to edit the reference once it is created. For that reason, be sure to check references created from .pdf for accuracy once they have been added to EndNote.

1. Go to File>Import .

2. From the Import Options drop down box, select PDF File or Folder .

3. Navigate to the .pdf you wish to add to EndNote.

4. Click Import . A new reference will be created with the .pdf attached.

Formatting Your Bibliography

To format the bibliography:

safari endnote extension

safari endnote extension

3. You can also use Configure Bibliography > Layout to change the font, size and other features of your bibliography.

safari endnote extension

Creating a stand-alone reference list or bibliography

2. Select the references in your EndNote library you wish to include in the bibliography

3. In EndNote, go to File > Export

4. Name the file, Save file as type > RTF and select your chosen Output Style

5. Click Save (be sure to note where the file is saved).

How this browser extension is friendlier on my budget and the environment

  • Beni is a free browser extension for Chrome & Safari making sustainable clothing shopping easier.
  • It matches current items with secondhand options from over 40 online stores for budget-friendly prices.
  • Beni works by adding the extension, then selecting items to find exact or similar thrifted options.

While I'm not writing about the newest, most fashionable earbuds and headphones , I spend a lot of time shopping for clothes online. Admittedly, I'm one of those people who claim I have nothing to wear whilst staring at a closet full of clothes.

Finding the Beni extension was the perfect compromise that made shopping sustainably for my favorite items even easier while performing some much-needed online resale therapy.

As a dedicated clothing shopper, however, I've never been one to discriminate against a good brand or good deal, even if the item was pre-owned. In fact, I do a lot of my shopping via online or physical thrift stores in an attempt to do some good for the environment, combating the fast-fashion industry, and protecting my wallet.

So, finding the Beni extension was the perfect compromise that made shopping sustainably for my favorite items even easier while performing some much-needed online retail therapy -- or rather, resale therapy.

Bose's new Ultra Open earbuds are the fashion and function success I can't stop wearing

Essentially, Beni streamlines second-hand shopping by matching the current desired (full priced) item with either the exact item or one similar via quality, second-hand thrifting apps.

When you first download Beni, you'll be invited to fill out your typical sizes for your favorite brands to ensure that the browswer is pulling custom options.

Description.

Save and Download images from any Website. Images is a Safari and Web extension for iOS, watchOS and macOS. You can download and share images from any website in high definition, you can also add a bookmark to save them for later. It is very simple, just open the extension while browsing and choose the image you want to download. That's it. # Privacy Policy Images app does not access or store any data related to you at any time. We don't have analytics in place, or cookies, and we don't track you or share your information in any way. No information leaves your device at all. If you choose to use Images this will store only your Bookmarks to share them among your devices, but they will be stored encrypted and even if they are on a public database in iCloud they will only be accessible by you, no one else can access them. The Safari and Web extension of Images require full access to the websites you browse, but that is only to download images for you, the app doesn't do anything else with that access and doesn't store any information from it, it also doesn't access any sensitive information and doesn't share any information with anyone. Feel free to use this app as you please.

Small bugs fixed on this version.
