Russell Howard Teases His High-Octane US Tour: ‘A Big, Fat, Funny Show’ (Exclusive Video)
- Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below
Standup comedian Russell Howard , beloved in his native U.K. for Sky’s long-running “The Russell Howard Hour” and known to global audiences for Netflix specials “Lubricant” (2021) and “Recalibrate” (2017), is once again taking his live show through the States.
“The unadulterated giddiness of U.S. audiences” is what he’s most looking forward to about the 15-stop U.S. leg, kicking off Oct. 4 in Durham, North Carolina.
“As much as I love performing stand-up in the U.K., it’s like Mordor in comparison,” he told TheWrap ahead of the exclusive premiere of the “Russell Howard Live 2023” trailer, seen above. “In the U.K., you’ll get a standing ovation at the end of the show, whereas in America you get one at the beginning as well!”
As for which stop he’s most looking forward to, Howard has his eye on the Oct. 12 stop at New York City’s historic Town Hall: “I love New York. It’s disgusting, dirty, and loud but you open a door and suddenly you find yourself somewhere incredible. It’s like an advent calendar covered in sh-t.”
The outing marks his first time coming back to the U.S. since his pre-COVID run of “Respite,” which sold over 300,000 tickets and marked his biggest world tour to date. It was later filmed for Netflix’s “Lubricant.”
Of the upcoming stops, he promised a “big, fat, funny show with loads of jokes and stories,” and teased that the set will change as the tour goes on.
“I’ve just done 125 shows in the U.K. to over 250,000 people — so I’ve got to change it up for my own sanity,” he said.
Can we expect some riffs on today’s political landscape? Count it as likely.
“I find it fascinating with all the talent and ingenuity bursting from America, that the election will ultimately come down to two old men,” he joked of the ongoing 2024 presidential election, indicating that the world is watching. “You get more options in a Starbucks than the ballot box. Neither Trump nor Biden fill you with hope. It’s the same in the U.K. Politics is proof that the cream can rise to the top — but turds can float there, too.”
Watch Howard’s U.S. tour trailer in the exclusive premiere above, and catch him live when he comes to a city near you .

Russell Howard, Netflix special review - joyous return to live performance | reviews, news & interviews
Russell howard, netflix special review - joyous return to live performance, stand-up with accompanying documentary.
In 2019, Russell Howard was all set to celebrate his 20th year in comedy by going on a world tour. Covid put paid to that, so it was with some genuine celebration that he was able to return to the stage with Lubricant , his second Netflix special, recorded at the Eventim Apollo in late 2021.
He was able to use some of the material of that anniversary show, Respite – about finding the pleasure rather than the pain in life and describing a world spinning out of control. Little did he know. In Lubricant he has skilfully updated Respite – written “when Corona was a beer and Harry was a prince” – with some terrific material about the pandemic and how it has changed our lives.
In a show that touches on an eclectic range of subjects, Howard riffs on feminism, his family, the daftness of English sayings and the modern vogue for finding just about everything – including stand-up comedy – offensive. He also brings us up to date with his medical situation, with more information than we needed on an anal problem.
But among the fluff there's a lot of meaty content. Howard kicks off by addressing the pandemic and anti-vaxxers, to whom he gives both barrels, and he has some interesting things to say about Britishness and how we now define it, suggesting a modern reworking of “Land of Hope and Glory” that brilliantly rhymes Stormzy with jalfrezi.
Lubricant is, then, another enjoyable mix of the silly and the serious, and the schoolboyish smut he loves alongside sharp political insights. It's tightly written and laden with clever callbacks, but most of all it's an hour of warm-hearted comedy from a man clearly delighted to be able to do his shtick on stage again. “Laughter is the lubricant that makes life liveable,” Howard says. No argument with that.
The accompanying documentary, Until the Wheels Come Off , is an added bonus. The idea originally was that a film crew would follow Howard as he celebrated two decades in the business as the world tour of Respite started in 2019. But instead the film documents the impact of Covid as shows were cancelled in February 2020 and Howard, newly married to an NHS doctor, moved back into his parents' house as she returned to the frontline.
In Nick Vass's often touching film, Howard muses on his family and how much he misses live performance as he rustles up a podcast from his boyhood bedroom. It's wryly amusing and, for fans of comedy, a real insight into a comic's relationship with their audience.

Russell Howard - Respite review: He’s still a comedy king
“That was worth the wait,” said Russell Howard as he walked onstage to ecstatic cheers from the sold-out Apollo, the first comedy audience here since March 2020. Fans had bought their tickets in 2019 and so much has changed since then. Apart from the 41-year-old stand-up, still boyish and still successfully combining childish smut with feelgood positivity.
Howard spent the opening section taking stock of the pandemic. It is difficult to find something new to say, but the Bristolian mined a rich seam satirising his anti-vaccine relatives who think Bill Gates wants to read their minds and control their jacuzzis. He also had a nimble take on “mum logic”, positing that women are superior at parenting and superior at running countries too.
A considerable chunk of the set suggested in various ways that comedy is a primal urge that makes us human: “It’s the lubricant that makes life liveable.” Laughter is universal, and particularly part of being British, where our two defining characteristics are “ugly and funny.” The show is called Respite because that is what laughter gives us.
Elsewhere he touched cautiously on gender politics and was more sure-footed on cancel culture, arguing that nobody really gets offended by jokes, it is all a clickbaity construct of the media. There was certainly nothing offensive here, although I’m not sure if I wanted the intimate details of his anal fissures, a riff that proved that honesty in comedy can go too far.
The most memorable moments were when he mixed his easy humour with more serious ideas. An updated Land of Hope and Glory – “Land of Attenborough and Stormzy” – was an excellent concept, which should be adopted by the Proms immediately.
He might want to modernise the classics, but he is also very traditional, skewering our obsession with celebrity and championing real experience over selfies. We are too busy on our phones to live, he said. He could have been addressing the ticket-holder in front of me who was filming the performance rather than actually enjoying it.
Respite is about searching for sanity in an insane world. He toured a version pre-pandemic and it is an indication of how perceptive Howard is that it makes more sense now than it did “when Corona was a beer and Harry was a Prince.” When it comes to comedy royalty, Howard is still a king.

Russell Howard review — I’d love to see more of the darker, gnarlier comic
Challenge yourself with today’s puzzles.
★★★☆☆ “I’ve got an oddness about me,” says Russell Howard, accurately if not entirely forthcomingly, towards the end of his sixth consecutive show here at the Palladium, with five more to come in the autumn.
As the numbers suggest, it’s a hugely popular oddness. Ten series of his BBC show Russell Howard’s Good News helped to make him a comedy fixture. And as the standing ovation at the end suggests, it’s a crowd-pleasing, highly professional, at its best delightful oddness. For much of the time, though, and to my frustration if not always to the rest of the crowd’s, he squashes his stranger inclinations within the guise of the everybloke. The ordinary guy made good, as he mimics the posh people who live near him

Russell Howard's Round The World tour review – raising the Royal Albert Hall's roof
It's Good News as the comic returns to the stage.
He finds humour in Nigel Farage (his jokes mocking the former UKIP leader were met with roaring cheers and claps), Donald Trump, sexting and – especially – his own family.
The strongest moments of his stadium show, in fact, were impressions of Howard family members – his mum, dad, and nephew, who he taught creepy phrases to. While Russell is obviously close to his family, you'd be forgiven for thinking otherwise from the way he parodies them on stage.
A lump-in-the-throat moment comes when talking about two of his grandparents, who he lost recently – one on the day of Trump's inauguration. But just when you're wiping a tear away, Russell brings the crowd back in with an anecdote about how a Mexican guitarist strummed him back into a moment of happiness.
The show is full of humour, irony and top-quality ridicule, perfectly pitched to a broad audience. And we're evidently not the only ones who thought so – Howard broke Frank Sinatra's record for the most nights a solo act has performed at the Royal Albert Hall. We've certainly never seen the venue's roof raised this high.
Information on dates and tickets to the Round The World tour can be found here. His show is due to tour over the next four months in *deep breath* Ireland, Dubai, Canada, USA, Hong Kong, Singapore, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Belgium, Iceland the Netherlands, New Zealand and Australia.
