Rome by Night

Join your Travel Director for a classic journey through one of the most fascinating cities in the world. Rome by night is a vision with its ancient monuments, classical buildings, palaces and churches beautifully illuminated against the evening sky. A wonderful introduction to the Eternal City!

Rome of Ancient Christians and the Catacombs

Outside the ancient Roman city walls we visit the early Christian Catacombs, underground cemeteries carved out of soft Tufa Stone. Nearby we also visit one of the major basilicas of Rome, St Paul’s Outside the Walls. The burial place of St Paul the Apostle, famous for its Byzantine Mosaics. On some departures the Christian Catacombs are offered with a visit to St Peter in Chains to view the magnificent ‘Moses’ sculpture by Michelangelo, (instead of St Paul’s).

Discovering Medieval Roman Neighborhood – Trastevere

Get off the beaten track and explore Rome’s most untouched medieval neighborhood, Trastevere. One of Rome’s most consistently unchanged medieval neighborhood, Trastevere is dotted with ancient and dimly lit churches, crumbling buildings and streets barely wide enough for a Fiat. With our local expert, we’ll explore the medieval labyrinth of alleyways and pause from time to time to take in this very atmospheric area. A maze of food shops, art galleries, cafes, apartment buildings and pretty squares, this district was once rather run-down and working-class, but has now become one of the city’s liveliest and most popular neighborhoods!

Sorrento to Capri

Spectacular cliffs and the famous turquoise colored waters are best experienced with a relaxing cruise around the island to view the beautiful white grotto and unique coastline. Our cruise ends in Capri town at the Augustus Gardens with picture postcard views. Enjoy a lemon granita, a specialty of the island. This optional is weather dependent and will be replaced by a mini bus tour of the Island to Anacapri, the highest village and will include a visit to Villa San Michele.

Sorrento drive down Amalfi Coast to Positano

Drive along the clear blue waters and picturesque resorts of the Amalfi Coast, arguably the most glamorous and scenic stretch of coast in Europe. Minibuses wind their way down serpentine roads to the exclusive artists’ paradise of Positano, clinging to the cliff face, as if about to cascade into the turquoise waters below. Spend time exploring the elegant shops, watching the artists at work, or enjoying an ‘aperitivo’ in a beach side cafe.

Alberobello to Ostuni

Optional Ostuni Tour: With its stark, white-washed buildings, narrow cobbled streets and arched stairways, Ostuni is reminiscent of a North African Arab Medina. Set against three hills ‘The White Town’ is a photographer’s delight.

Alberobello visit to Caves of Castellana

The Grotte di Castellana are one of the most amazing natural wonders of Puglia. Formed about 90 million years ago, the caves are an incredible vision of stalactites, stalagmites and canyons formed by a miracle of nature. The eccentric stalactites here defy the law of gravity by growing horizontally. This is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy one of the most amazing natural visions of Puglia and Italy!

Taormina to Siracusa

Siracusa, one of the oldest ancient Greek cities dating back to the Magna Grecia. There you will see the Italian master Caravaggio’s famous painting the ‘Burial of Saint Lucy located in the church of Santa Lucia.

Taormina to Mt Etna

Enter the rustic village life of Sicily with our local guide as we visit Savoca, the town also chosen by Frances F Coppola for his movie “The Godfather”. Enjoy the stunning views and visit Vitelli’s bar, used in one of the scenes of the film, famous for its tasty, ice cold, “granite di limone”. Then up Mt. Etna, the famous active volcano – the highest in Europe. You will have time to photograph the spectacular scenery before our return to Taormina.

Palermo – Insider Walking Tour

Walk the ancient streets of the historical center and learn, through the eyes of a local, how the Palermitani live. You’ll discover hidden treasures of this fascinating city that most visitors don’t get to see, like a private visit to the palace of the family of the Counts of Palermo, whom we’ll meet and who will share their amazing experiences with us. This unique tour also includes a drink and light snacks.

rome to sicily tour

Rome to Sicily

23 days | discover the secrets of italy’s vibrant south on a journey through the amalfi region, calabria and sicily..

Amalfi coastline

Acquaint yourself with Italy's 'Eternal City' of Rome and learn about the catastrophic fate of Pompeii. Soak up the sunshine in the coastal town of Sorrento and explore the beautiful Amalfi Coast, before heading south to Calabria, a hidden gem for those who stray off Italy’s beaten path. Continue to bustling Sicily, with the volcanic valleys of Mt. Etna, the timeworn streets of Syracuse, the Baroque wonders of Ragusa, the ruins of the Valley of Temples and the rich anti-mafia history of Palermo. Starring dramatic cliffside villages, clear waters and delicious seafood, this is a chance to experience the highlights of southern Italy.

Trip overview

  • Wander around Rome's famous landmarks including the Colosseum, Vatican City, Sistine Chapel, St Peter's Basilica and much more. This is a city that bucket lists were made for
  • Feel La Dolce Vita while sipping espresso alongside sharp-dressed locals on the glamorous Sorrentine Peninsula
  • Explore the vast, frozen in time ruins of ancient Pompeii, which emerged from the ashes after thousands of years, and take a peak inside the steaming crater of Mt Vesuvius, the volcano that destroyed it
  • Hike among the olive groves on the Path of the Gods along the spectacular Amalfi Coast
  • Get up close and personal with the active volcanoes scattered across the Aeolian Islands and perhaps take a dip in one of the sulphur springs
  • Surrounded by dramatic valleys and craters set in a lunar-like landscape, towering Mt. Etna is one of the greatest natural beauties of the Mediterranean, and Europe’s largest active volcano
  • Search crumbling Greek and Roman ruins in the charming seaside town of Taormina
  • Due to the terrain the means of transportation on this trip is a mix of local trains, private vehicles and public buses. Train travel is a fast way to traverse long distances, allowing you to avoid traffic jams and arrive right into the city centre. Trains are comfortable and all have toilets, however can often be quite busy.
  • Please note that you'll have to carry your own luggage on and off the trains, and up and down stairs at train stations and at hotels, so make sure it doesn’t exceed our weight and size recommendations. You can find this information in the 'What to Take' section of the trip notes. You may want to consider taking a backpack rather than a wheelie bag, however this is up to your personal preference and what you feel more comfortable with.
  • Summer temperatures can be extreme in many of the regions visited (over 40°C), which can be uncomfortable. It’s important to use sun protection, wear layers to combat the heat and drink plenty of water. Additionally, please be aware that July, August and the first half of September is high season along the Southern Italian coast, which means that the local infrastructure is under a lot of pressure with a lot of people in the towns we visit. Please carefully consider the time of the year you wish to travel and your suitability to that season.
  • Hotel rooms in Europe can seem rather small by American or Australian standards and often don't have double beds, but rather two single beds that can be pushed together.
  • On this trip you must pack as lightly as possible because you will be expected to carry your own bag and although you won't be required to walk long distances with your luggage (max 30 minutes), we strongly recommend keeping the weight under 15kg / 33lb. Most travellers carry their luggage in a backpack, although an overnight bag with a shoulder strap would suffice if you travel lightly. Smaller bags or backpacks with wheels are convenient although we recommend your bag has carry straps to accommodate the cobbled streets, uneven surfaces, stairs and steps you are likely to encounter while carrying your luggage. You'll also need a day pack/bag to carry water and a camera etc for day trips.

Buongiorno! Welcome to Italy. Crowded with ancient ruins and religious monuments, Rome still pulses to the beat of modern life and is packed with designer shops, restaurants, cafes and exciting nightlife. There are no activities planned until your welcome meeting at 6 pm tonight, so you can arrive any time before then. There are so many things to do in Rome – the Colosseum, the Forum, Piazza Navona, the Spanish Steps, Via Condotti, Piazza Venezia, the Vatican City and St Peter's Basilica – so arriving early is recommended. Don’t forget to do as the Romans do and sip an espresso at one of the tiny streetside cafes or sample the many flavours of gelato that colour the city (Trastevere is a great spot for dining). For those captivated by the 'Eternal City', throw a coin into the Trevi Fountain to ensure a return visit to Rome.

  • Hotel (1 night)

There are no meals included on this day.

  • Rome - Castel Sant'Angelo - EUR14
  • Rome - Christian Catacombs - EUR10
  • Rome - Colosseum, Roman Forum & Palatine Hill - EUR19
  • Rome - Keats-Shelley Memorial House - EUR6
  • Rome - Galleria Borghese - EUR16
  • Rome - Pantheon - EUR5
  • Vatican City - St Peter's Dome Climb & Elevator - EUR10
  • Rome - Venezia Palace - EUR17

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance and emergency contact details at this time. If you are going to be late please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.

If you would like to visit the Vatican Museum please check the Vatican website ( https://www.vatican.va/content/vatican/en.html ) for updated information on opening times. We strongly suggest planning your visit for today before welcome meeting and pre-booking your tickets at https://www.museivaticani.va/content/museivaticani/en.html . The Vatican Museum is closed on some days, including most Sundays. On the last Sunday of the month, it's open and free (but expect large crowds). Please consider this when booking this trip. Tickets for Galleria Borghese can also be booked online. In order to allow enough time in the museum and to avoid the crowds it is recommended to start the museum visit as doors open. Please note that pre-booked tickets are not required if you just want to visit St Peter's Basilica and its dome.

If you are interested in visiting the Colosseum, we strongly suggest planning your visit for today before welcome meeting and pre-booking your tickets at https://colosseo.it/en/opening-times-and-tickets/

Travel by train to Naples, a raucous city that overflows with passion, tradition and gastronomy. Naples was carved out by many empires of the past and by merchants and pirates from across the world: Romans, Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Venetians, Spaniards, Normans and Africans. Its evocative, historical old centre is a World Heritage-listed area and the famous Spanish Quarter is still one of the most densely populated residential areas in Europe. Take an orientation walk with your leader through the city center and the Spanish Quarter. Finish your walk with a visit to the statue of the Veiled Christ. This treasured piece of art was carved over 300 years ago. Its sheer beauty and serenity will surely leave you in awe. Naples is the birthplace of pizza, so why not head to one of the many pizzerias and taste what's truly some of the best in Italy. Later in the afternoon, board a train to the time capsule of Pompeii, in the shadow of Mt Vesuvius. Your accommodation is perfectly located right near the entrance to the archaeological excavation site.

  • Naples - Leader-led orientation walk
  • Naples - Statue of the Veiled Christ
  • Naples - Archaeological Museum - EUR15
  • Naples - Duomo - Free
  • Naples - St Claire's Church and Cloister - EUR6

Your travel time today will be approximately 4 hours.

The small picturesque town of modern Pompeii has a wonderful Old Town square – the perfect place to while away some time with the locals, drinking true Italian coffee and watching the world go by. Most of today will be spent exploring the ruins of ancient Pompeii on a guided tour. Until 26 August, 79 AD, Pompeii was a thriving Roman trading centre, where ordinary people went about their everyday business, but it was frozen in time when Mount Vesuvius erupted, killing 2000 people and their homes under a layer of ash. The city was never rebuilt and largely disappeared from people’s minds until the 18th century when the ruins were re-discovered. Now, you can take an unparalleled look back into the lives of ancient Romans and discover how they lived, worked and interacted 2000 years ago. The finely preserved ruins include villas, temples, theatres and bustling markets. You can also visit the Roman Forum and Basilica, temples, public baths and the tiny Odeon created for music recitals. The rest of the day is free, but if the ruins piqued your interest, head to nearby Herculaneum, which also holds a wealth of fossilised archaeological finds.

  • Pompeii - Archaeological Site
  • Pompeii - Walking Tour with Local Guide
  • Pompeii - Herculaneum Ruins - EUR14
  • Pompeii - Sanctuary of St Mary of the Rosary - Free

This morning a private transfer will take you up the mighty Mt Vesuvius, where you’ll meet a local volcanology guide. Ascend to the summit of Mt Vesuvius for staggering 360 degree views over the Bay of Naples and into the steaming crater. Although Mt Vesuvius is still considered to be an active volcano, the last eruption was in 1944 and there's no sign of lava. See firsthand the awesome power of the volcano that engulfed the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum in 79AD. In the afternoon, travel by private vehicle to the picturesque resort town of Sorrento. People have been coming to the peninsula and islands of the Sorrento region for at least 2000 years, and set invitingly atop dramatic cliffs over sparkling, blue waters, it's easy to see why. There are many options in this small seaside town with its fine piazzas, maze of old streets, sidewalk cafes and glamorous shops. The area is also famous for its lemon groves, producing the famous limoncello liqueur. In the evening, head out to try some of the best limoncello on offer in Sorrento.

  • Mt Vesuvius - Crater Rim Walk & Summit Climb
  • Sorrento - Limoncello Tasting

Your travel time today will be approximately 1 hour.

The final ascent of the volcano can only be done on foot, up a steep but well-made trail of volcanic ash and gravel. The ascent takes around 45 minutes, and comfortable closed shoes are essential. Sufferers of vertigo may prefer to opt out.

You have a free day to explore this delightful area and the museums, galleries and piazzas of Sorrento. Perhaps stroll along the marina or cool off in the waters of the local small beaches. They’re not big on sandy beaches here, so swimming Sorrento-style is via wooden or stone bathing platforms beneath the cliffs. Taking a trip to Capri is also a great option, with a hydrofoil taking you across to the island once home to the magnificent holiday palaces of the Roman emperors. Natural grottoes pierce Capri’s dramatic rocky coastline, while in the interior, narrow roads wind through fragrant citrus groves, past villages of flat-roofed white cubist-looking houses with flower-filled gardens, and manicured towns that offer swanky hotels and chic cafes. Here, you can take a boat trip to the fairy-tale Blue Grotto (La Grotta Azzurra), where the water shines with an extraordinary blue translucence, a result of the refraction of the sunlight outside. Your leader will be of assistance and have plenty of suggestions for what to do and see today. End the day in a very Italian way with a demonstration of Gelato making.

  • Sorrento - Gelato Making Demonstration
  • Capri - Hydrofoil Sorrento to Capri - EUR44

Arrive on the Amalfi Coast after a short journey by private vehicle. The Amalfi peninsula is a land of rocky coasts, cliff-top vistas, azure seas, tiered lemon groves, whitewashed villages clinging to steep cliffs and bright blue skies. If you're after a relaxing walk with a few cultural highlights, stroll from one side of Amalfi town to the other and visit the Cattedrale di Sant'Andrea and the Chiostro del Paradiso. If you’re after something more active, maybe embark on a walk through the Valley of Mills where for centuries paper mills were in operation. Alternatively, catch a bus up the Valley of Dragons to reach pretty Ravello. The French novelist Andre Gide once described this town as being ‘closer to the sky than the seashore’. For centuries, its lofty position and sunny, dry climate have made it an appealing place for writers, artists, musicians and travellers. Ravello also boasts two magnificent villas – the superb 11th Century Villa Rufolo, which was once the home of Wagner, and Villa Cimbrone, a sumptuous 19th Century mansion with fabulous gardens and unequalled views over the Gulf of Salerno. Tonight, you'll stay in Minor Town, just a 15-minute bus ride away from Amalfi Town. Just as picturesque as the tourist hotspots, this charming small town boasts more privacy and views just as good.

  • Hotel in Minori (Amalfi Coast) (1 night)
  • Amalfi - Chiostro del Paradiso - EUR3
  • Amalfi - Valley of the Mills Hike - Free
  • Amalfi - Ravello & Valley of the Dragons - Free
  • Amalfi - Cattedrale S.Andrea - Free

Your travel time today will be approximately 2 hours.

This morning, take the short bus ride to Amalfi Town. Your leader will take you for a half-day hike along the narrow trail of the famous Sentiero Degli Dei (the Walk of the Gods), which, until quite recently, was followed by mules and donkeys as they traversed the dramatic landscape. This path winds its way through unique scenery and boasts unrivalled views along the coast. Walk through forests and fields of wildflowers, olive groves and vineyards, past ancient stone huts and beside sheer walls of granite. Glimpse local farmers tending their crops by hoe and elbow grease, herds of goats feeding beside the trail beside their shepherds, and teams of workmen commuting by mule. The trail ends in picturesque Positano, where there will be ample time to explore and maybe take a dip in the sea. Return to Minori by ferry and bus. With tonight your last night as a group, it’s a good idea to gather your fellow travellers and head out for a feast to celebrate the end of this Italian adventure.

  • Amalfi - Walk of the Gods Hike (Sentiero degli Dei)
  • Amalfi - Coastal Ferry Cruise Positano to Amalfi

Your trekking time today will be approximately 5 hours or 10 km. Please note that the Pathway of the Gods is steep in places and has many stairs (the descent to Positano has more than 1500 steps) and can be challenging if you suffer from vertigo.

Your leader will be able to suggest alternative activities should you wish to opt out. Please also note that the ferry from Positano operates on seasonal schedules and may be cancelled in adverse weather conditions. In these cases we will take the bus.

Today is a free day for you to explore the region surrounding Amalfi. A great way to see the beautiful Amalfi coastline and take in the sights is to board a boat – there are regular seasonal services between Amalfi, Positano and Capri. It is also highly recommended to walk down into the shaded Valle dei Mulini (Valley of the Watermills). Here you will find remnants of Europe’s earliest paper mills, strewn among thick foliage fed by the valley's streams. You may pass locals collecting wild mushrooms and stout men carrying half their body weight in lemons on their heads. The path takes you deep into the valley and the entrance to the nature reserve of ‘Valle delle Ferriere’ (Valley of Iron). This is one of the most interesting nature reserves of the area and an ideal place for lunch. Or perhaps visit neighbouring Atrani, the best-preserved town on the Amalfi Coast, with narrow little streets and a serene town square.

As this is a combination trip, your group leader and the composition of your group may change at this location. There will be a group meeting to discuss the next stage of your itinerary and you're welcome to attend, as this is a great chance to meet your new fellow travellers.

This morning you'll travel to Civita by boat, train and private vehicle. Civita was founded by Albanian refugees in the Middle Ages and the Civitesi are recognised as an ethnic minority by the Italian Government. Their language, arberesh, is a mixture of Italian and Albanian and is only spoken here and in some parts of Sicily. Take a walk around this fascinating village, then perhaps choose to visit a local shop with regional delights, or just walk in the scenic hills instead.

  • Guesthouse (1 night)

Your travel time today will be approximately 3.5 hours.

After breakfast today, you’ll hike into the beautiful Pollino National Park that surrounds Civita. With sheer cliffs, narrow canyons and a diverse range of wildlife including the peregrine falcon, eagle owl and the recently reintroduced Egyptian vulture, this area is a wildlife lover's paradise. If you'd like to opt out of the hike, you can kick back on the terrace of your guesthouse and enjoy the scenery and hospitality of the locals. The afternoon and evening are at your leisure.

  • Civita - Nature based hike

Your trekking time today will be approximately 3 to 4 hours or 4 km. Please note that you will need to wear appropriate footwear, and you must be aware that temperatures can be high and that there may not be much shade on the hike.

After breakfast this morning, you’ll transfer from Civita to Paola, before taking the train on to Tropea. Tropea has a striking sense of timelessness, created by the streets full of faded buildings and the iconic fortifications that line the city’s cliffs. Explore the town as you head out on an orientation walk. You may want to visit the local Norman cathedral, the Duomo, which holds an icon of the town’s celebrated protectress, the Madonna of Romania. There’s also the Museo Diocesano, a tiny museum hiding in the Palazzo Vescovile next to the Duomo, which is full of religious art and wooden statues. If you’d prefer some time by the water, feel free to head to the beach and marvel at the looming structures on the cliffs nearby.

Your travel time today will be approximately 2.5 hours.

If the weather is fine, you'll head out on a boat trip to the island of Stromboli. You will stop here to visit the island of San Vincenzo where you will have time to swim in the deep blue sea of the Aeolian Islands, shop along the main street or stop in a local restaurant for dinner. Depending on the time of year, you will depart Stromboli again in the evening and cruise to the Sciara del Fuoco (Stream of Fire) which marks the path of the lava flows that occur during Stromboli’s eruptions.

  • Tropea - Stromboli by Night

The boat trip is subject to weather and may be cancelled at short notice if weather conditions are adverse. In this case the leader will provide you with an alternative activity. Please also note that today's trip will have you depart at around 2pm, and you will return to Tropea at around 10pm.

Depart from Tropea by train as you travel on to Reggio Calabria, the gateway to Sicily. The city’s placement in a major earthquake zone has caused much destruction over the years, meaning only a few historical sites remain in comparison to the rest of Italy. However, this has resulted in a charming mix of architecture, balanced between the surviving old buildings and the modern structures. Embark on an orientation walk, before visiting the widely renowned National Archaeological Museum of Reggio. This building is arguably the most important tourism destination that the region has to offer, featuring an excellent collection of exhibits from Greek-influenced sites across Calabria, including the Bronzi di Riace, two giant bronze statues found on the sea floor in the 70s. Later in the evening, perhaps hunt down some of the city's spectacular restaurants for grilled swordfish or pasta with cauliflower and broccoli (both are dishes typical to the area) and a glass of local wine, or wander past the city’s panoramic waterfront.

  • Reggio Calabria - Archaeological Museum
  • Reggio Calabria - Aragonese Castle - EUR5

Bid farewell to Reggio Calabria and travel by ferry to Messina in Sicily, where you’ll enjoy a Messina (a traditional boat ride). You'll experience the thrill of a fishing trip with the locals and learn about the traditions and natural wonders of the Strait of Messina. After, board a private minibus to the atmospheric city of Catania. The city has a unique energy and an interesting blend of young and old. On one hand, there’s a gritty, attractive bar culture that fuels an exuberant nightlife full of flavour and laughter. On the other hand, the city's very core boasts one of the fabled Late Baroque towns – the UNESCO World Heritage site, Val di Noto. You’ll get the opportunity to explore both sides of this curious city by walking through its grand piazzas and wide roads. The evening is yours to enjoy, so perhaps get a gelato or a granita to cool off at the end of a busy day of exploration.

  • Messina - traditional boat sailing

Take a day trip to the charming city of Taormina. Start things off with an orientation walk, where you’ll notice the Greek influence in the architecture. Walk through the back streets and gardens, and perhaps visit the world-famous Greek theatre and the cathedral. The whole afternoon will be at your leisure, so there's plenty of time to explore at your own pace. Have a drink in the Mediterranean sun or dig into some traditional Sicilian pasta before heading back to Catania for your final evening. Perhaps, head out with your newfound travel companions for one final pasta dinner together and toast to the Calabrian adventures you shared.

  • Taormina - Day Trip
  • Taormina - Greek Theatre - EUR10

Enjoy a free day in the charming Catania until your 6pm group meeting.

Today it’s time to come face-to-face with the volcano that towered over you yesterday, we’re taking a day trip to drive up Mt Etna, Europe’s largest active volcano. Drive up the northern flank of the volcano and strap on your walking shoes for an easy walk through the spectacular Valle del Bove (Ox Valley), a valley formed when the original crater of Etna collapsed. This is Etna’s largest valley, where many lava flows can be seen, one on top of the other. At an altitude of approx 2,000 metres, you’ll walk into the centre of an extinct crater and visit a lava cave that can be explored with helmets and torches. Who else can say they’ve walked into the crater of a volcano? Walk among the cold lava streams of Piano Provenzana, a former ski resort that has been destroyed during the last big eruption of 2002. After we’re throughly explored Etna, we’ll hit the road to Syracuse where your leader will take you on an orientation walk through the most interesting parts of the city. The evening is yours to explore, or chill out, as you wish.

  • Mt Etna - Day Trip
  • Siracusa - Leader-led Orientation Walk

Today’s driving time from Mount Etna to Syracuse is approximately 1.5 hours.

Wake up without an alarm today, you’ve got the day at your leisure to explore Syracuse however you like. Perhaps, wander through the streets and check out the crumbling building facades and balconies supported for centuries by a host of stone lions, tigers, bears, dragons, moors, satyrs, devils, angels, kings, paupers, wenches and cherubs. Perhaps take a boat trip around the island of Ortigia for a scenic view of the walled off cityscape. Or, you may want to participate in an optional visit to the Neapolis Archaeological Site – known as one of the world’s finest. Alternately, we’re sure you could fill your whole day just wandering aimlessly through this fascinating city, stopping by cafes, restaurants and perhaps grabbing a granita in the afternoon.

  • Siracusa - Castello Maniace - EUR4
  • Siracusa - Cathedral - EUR2
  • Siracusa - Archaeological Museum - EUR14
  • Siracusa - Neapolis Archaeological Park - EUR13

After breakfast today we’re setting our sights for the city of Agrigento. But first, there’s one quick stop along the way that simply can’t be missed – Noto, a small slightly less-known town with limestone buildings that dazzle on a sunlit afternoon. Our next stop is the ‘new’ baroque city of Ragusa that was completely rebuilt after the devastating earthquake of 1693, resulting in two vastly different sides to the same city. After exploring the tangled alleyways and baroque palazzi, travel on to the final destination for today, Agrigento. Arrive late in the afternoon and enjoy some free time. Maybe find the historic center that extends up the Colle di Girgenti hill including Via Atenea and Viale della Vittoria, where there’s a panoramic view over the valley (Valley of the Temples) and the sea for sunset. Plus, be sure to try the famous gelato pecorino in one of the local cafés and patisseries.

  • Noto & Ragusa - Day Trip

Today’s travel time will be approximately 4-5 hours.

You’ll take a step back in time today as you explore the nearby Valley of the Temples. Your local guide will bring this classical Greek site to life as you visit the temples of Hera, Herakles, Zeus and Castor and Pollux. Try to nab a window seat today, along the way you’ll enjoy magnificent views of the sweeping landscape and Mediterranean Sea. After the guided tour in the Valley of the Temples, you’ll head on to Marsala a coastal town in the west of Sicily.

  • Agrigento - Guided visit Valley of the Temples

Today’s driving time from the Valley of the Temples to Marsala is approximately 2.5 hours.

Today you’ll set your sights on Palermo, but not without a few scenic stops along the way. First up, we’ll explore the beautifully preserved medieval town of Erice (located more than 750 metres above sea level). Despite being handed from one ruling army to the next, there are plenty of beautiful buildings in this town, each showcasing architectural styles from a varied history. Before you get back on the road, be sure to pick yourself up a Genovesi – a traditional Sicilian pastry filled with custard or ricotta cream. With a belly full of sweets, we’re on our way to the capital of Sicily – Palermo. On arrival in Palermo the afternoon is free for you to explore as you wish. You might like to wander the labyrinth of small alleyways, buzzing colourful market squares and winding roads. Or, check out some of the main monuments like the 12th century cathedral in the old heart of the city.

  • Erice - local sweets tasting

Today's driving time from Marsala to Palermo is approximately 3 hours.

Wake up excited and ready to explore the beautiful city of Palermo. In the morning, you’ll take part in a walking tour with a local guide where you’ll uncover symbolic places of rebellion and anti-mafia racketeering. Places such as the Teatro Massimo, Cape Market, Piazza della Memoria, Beati Paoli Square and more all have a rich history in civil mobilisation – plus, they are known to serve delicious street food. Dig in! You’ll get a chance to meet shop owners who have had the courage to denounce their extortionists. In the afternoon, you’ll have the option to visit nearby Monreale, situated in a panoramic position above Palermo with fantastic views over the city and the sea. You’ll get a chance to visit the cathedral here, described as one of the ‘wonders of the medieval world’, and climb to its roof. Alternately, you might like to wander the city of Palermo at your own will. This evening, perhaps share a bite to eat and toast to the week that was with your group before the adventure comes to an end tomorrow.

  • Palermo - Anti-Mafia Movement Tour
  • Monreale - Cathedral & Cloister - EUR13

Your adventures come to an end today after breakfast. If you’d like to stay and explore more in Palermo we can arrange additional accommodation on request (subject to availability).

Rome to Sicily tour requires that you have adequate and valid travel insurance covering medical and personal accidents, including repatriation costs and emergency evacuation. World Nomads offers travel insurance for independent travelers and intrepid families.

For this Rome to Sicily tour getting the required visa(s) is the responsibility for each individual traveller, as visa requirements vary depending on your nationality. We recommend to check with your local embassies representing the countries that you are traveling to, as part of this itinerary.

  • Proof of vaccination against COVID-19 is no longer mandatory on departures after 1st January 2023. Nonetheless, all travellers are strongly advised to be vaccinated as a safety measure to protect themselves and others on the tour. This policy excludes all Polar trips and select adventure cruises, where testing and vaccination are required.
  • Also, proof of vaccination may still be required at specific entry points or by the airlines. Therefore, please make sure to check all the travel requirements carefully before travelling.

Best time to go on a road trip from Rome to Sicily

You can take a road trip to Sicily any time of the year. The climate is pleasant all year, and the region clocks in 2500 sunshine hours. Although visiting Sicily during the shoulder seasons is best, the diversity of the monuments and nature makes a sunny summer trip or a chilly winter road trip worth pursuing.

Summers are the most popular times for tourists to visit Sicily. The temperature averages between mid-thirties and is perfect for chilling at the beach. The only downside is that the accommodations are pricey, shooting the travel budget through the roof.

Beautiful, colorful entrance to local shop in Taormina, Sicily, Italy

Should you choose to visit the Sicily region in winter, expect rain. This makes swimming and enjoying the beach a bit difficult. Nonetheless, you can still explore the cities, forts, and cathedrals and participate in indoor activities.

Spring is the best time to plan this trip as the temperature ranges between 20 and 30 degrees, and the accommodation prices are reasonable. The temperatures drop slightly as summer fades and fall sets in, but the tourist numbers don't. So, you will have an expensive trip if you plan it during early fall.

Another reason to pick the spring season for your road trip is that Sicily hosts many music and food festivals from March to June. Sicily has many festivals throughout the year, and each region has its schedule.

If you wish to observe a quirky event, the Artichoke Festival takes place in the Palermo area in April. May sees the The Greek Theater Festival in Syracuse and Taormina Film Festival takes place in June.

Buongiorno! Welcome to Italy. Crowded with ancient ruins and religious monuments, Rome still pulses to the beat of modern life and is packed with designer shops, restaurants, cafes and exciting nightlife. There are no activities planned before the group meeting at 6pm tonight, so you can arrive any time before then. It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance details and next of kin information at this time. If you are going to be late please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place. There are so many things to do in Rome – the Colosseum, the Forum, Piazza Navona, the Spanish Steps, Via Condotti, Piazza Venezia, the Vatican City and St Peter's Basilica – so arriving early is recommended. Don’t forget to do as the Romans do and sip an espresso at one of the tiny streetside cafes and sample the many flavours of gelato that colour the city, best done in the bohemian neighbourhood of Trastevere. For those captivated by the 'Eternal City', throw a coin into the Trevi Fountain to ensure a return visit to Rome.

Travel by train to Naples (approximately 3 hours), a raucous city that overflows with passion, tradition and gastronomy. Take an orientation walk with your leader and walk through the historical center and the Spanish Quarter. Finish your walk with a visit to the statue of the Veiled Christ. This treasured piece of art was carved over 300 years ago. Its sheer beauty and serenity will surely leave you in awe. Naples is the birthplace of the pizza, so why not head to one of the many pizzerias and taste what's truly some of the best that Italy has to offer. Later in the afternoon, board a train to the time capsule of Pompeii, in the shadow of Mt Vesuvius (approximately 1 hour). Your accommodation is perfectly located right near the entrance to the archaeological excavation site.

The small picturesque town of 'modern' Pompeii has a wonderful old town square – the perfect place to while away some time with the locals, drinking true Italian coffee and watching the world go by. Most of today though will be spent exploring the ruins of ancient Pompeii on a guided tour. Until 26 August, 79 AD, Pompeii was a thriving Roman trading centre, where ordinary people went about their everyday business, but it was frozen in time when Mount Vesuvius erupted, killing 2,000 people and their homes under a layer of ash. The city was never rebuilt and largely disappeared from people’s minds until the 18th century, when the ruins were re-discovered. Now you can take an unparalleled look back into the lives of ancient Romans and discover how they lived, worked and interacted 2,000 years ago. The finely preserved ruins include villas, temples, theatres and bustling markets. Walk along the chariot-marked streets, visit the magnificent amphitheatre and the ‘Villa of Mysteries’. You can also visit the Roman Forum and basilica, temples, public baths, and the tiny Odeon created for music recitals. The rest of the day is free, but if the ruins piqued your interest, head to nearby Herculaneum, which also holds a wealth of fossilised archaeological finds.

This morning take a bus up the mighty Mt Vesuvius, where you’ll meet a local volcanology guide. Ascend to the summit of Mt Vesuvius for staggering 360 degree views over the Bay of Naples and into the steaming crater. Although Mt Vesuvius is still considered to be an active volcano, the last eruption was in 1944 and there's no sign of lava. See first-hand the awesome power of the volcano that engulfed the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum in 79AD. In the afternoon, travel by private vehicle to the picturesque resort town of Sorrento (approximately 1 hour). People have been coming to the peninsula and islands of the Sorrento region for at least 2,000 years, and set invitingly atop dramatic cliffs over sparkling, blue waters, it's easy to see why. There are many options in this small seaside town with its fine piazzas, maze of old streets, sidewalk cafes and glamorous shops. The area is also famous for its lemon groves, producing the famous limoncello liqueur. In the evening head out to try some of the best limoncello on offer in Sorrento.

Taking a trip to Capri is also a great option, with a hydrofoil taking you across to the island that was once home to the magnificent holiday palaces of the Roman emperors. Capri’s dramatic rocky coastline is pierced by natural grottoes, while in the interior, narrow roads wind through fragrant citrus groves, past villages of flat-roofed white cubist-looking houses with flower-filled gardens, and manicured towns which offer swanky hotels and chic cafes. Here you can take a boat trip to the fairy-tale Blue Grotto (La Grotta Azzurra), where the water shines with an extraordinary blue translucence, a result of refraction of the sunlight outside. Your leader will be of assistance and will have plenty of suggestions of what to do and see today. End the day a very Italian way with a demonstration of Gelato making.

Arrive on the Amalfi Coast after a short journey by private vehicle (approximately 2 hours). The Amalfi peninsula is a land of rocky coasts, cliff-top vistas, azure seas, tiered lemon groves, whitewashed villages clinging to steep cliffs, and bright blue skies. If you're after a relaxing walk with a few cultural highlights, stroll from one side of Amalfi town to the other and pay a visit to the Cattedrale di Sant'Andrea and the Chiostro del Paradiso. If you’re after something more active, perhaps embark on a walk through the Valley of Mills where for centuries paper mills were in operation. Alternatively catch a bus up the Valley of Dragons to reach pretty Ravello. The French novelist André Gide once described this town as being ‘closer to the sky than the seashore’. For centuries, its lofty position and sunny, dry climate has made it an appealing place for writers, artists, musicians and travellers. Ravello also boasts two magnificent villas – the superb 11th Century Villa Rufolo which was once the home of Wagner, and Villa Cimbrone, a sumptuous 19th Century mansion with fabulous gardens and unequalled views over the Gulf of Salerno. Otherwise just laze around on the beaches and in the piazza, gazing back up at the amazingly picturesque part of the world.

Your leader will take you for a half-day hike along the narrow trail of the famous Sentiero Degli Dei (the Walk of the Gods) which, until quite recently, was followed by mules and donkeys as they traversed the dramatic landscape. The trail ends in picturesque Positano where there will be ample time to explore and maybe take a dip in the sea. Return to Amalfi by ferry which is the perfect way to see the coast from a different perspective. With tonight your last night as a group, it’s a good idea to gather your fellow travellers together and head out for a feast to celebrate the end of this Italian adventure.

This morning you'll travel to Civita by boat, train and private vehicle. It's a tad complex logistically, but well worth the effort to see this gorgeous village built into the rocky hillside. Civita was founded by Albanian refugees in the Middle Ages and the Civitesi are recognised as an ethnic minority by the Italian Government. Their language, arberesh, is a mixture of Italian and Albanian and is only spoken here and in some parts of Sicily. Take a walk around this fascinating village on arrival then perhaps choose to visit a local winery and cheese producer, or just walk in the scenic hills instead.

After breakfast this morning, you’ll transfer from Civita to Paola, before taking the train onwards to Tropea.

Enjoy a free day in the Mediterranean paradise of Tropea. Perhaps, reserve a spot on the beach, soak up some sun and cool off in the clear blue water, or maybe you'd prefer to sample Tropea's specialty: cipolla di Tropea. These are Italy's, and perhaps the world's, favourite onion thanks to their unique sweetness. Rumour has it you can even find a red onion ice cream in town, so why not give one a try as you kick back by the water.

If the weather is fine, take an included boat trip to the Aeolian Islands of Vulcano, Lipari and Stromboli. These islands, affectionately referred to as ‘pearls of the Mediterranean’, attract all manner of adventurers and thrill seekers to their shores due to their natural beauty and volcanic activity. The trip will start with a boat ride to the aptly named Vulcano, where you’ll have a chance to dip in either the crystal waters or the famous sulphur springs as they sit in the foreground of an active volcano. Then, land on the isle of Lipari where you’ll have free time to visit the museum, have lunch, go shopping or stroll through the streets. Following Lipari, you’ll pass the isle of Panarea and travel to Stromboli to learn about the famous Sciara del Fuoco (street of fire) before spending free time on the island’s black sandy beaches. Afterwards, return to Tropea where you’ll spend the night.

Depart from Tropea by train as you travel onward to Reggio Calabria, the gateway to Sicily. The city’s placement in a major earthquake zone has caused much destruction over the years, meaning only few historical sites remain in comparison to the rest of Italy. However, this has resulted in a charming mix of architecture - balanced between the surviving old buildings and the modern structures. Embark on an orientation walk, before visiting the widely renowned National Archaeological Museum of Reggio. This building is arguably the most important tourism destination that the region has to offer, featuring an excellent collection of exhibits from Greek influenced sites across Calabria, including the Bronzi di Riace, two large bronze statues found on the sea floor in the 70's. Later in the evening perhaps hunt down some of the city's spectacular restaurants for grilled swordfish or pasta with cauliflower and broccoli (both are dishes typical to the area) and a glass of local wine, or wander past the city’s panoramic waterfront.

Bid farewell to Reggio Calabria and travel by ferry to Messina in Sicily, where you’ll enjoy a felucca ride, a typical boat of the Strait of Messina for sword fishing. You'll experience the thrill of a fishing trip with the locals and learn about the traditions and natural wonders of the Strait of Messina. After your felucca experience, you’ll board a bus to the atmospheric city of Catania. The city has a unique energy to it, an interesting blend of young and old. On one hand, there’s a gritty, attractive bar culture that fuels an exuberant nightlife, full of flavour and laughter. On the other hand, the very core of the city boasts one of the fabled “Late Baroque” towns – the UNESCO World Heritage site, Val di Noto. You’ll get the opportunity to explore both sides of this curious city by walking through its grand piazzas and wide roads. The evening is yours to enjoy, so perhaps get a gelato or a granita to cool off at the end of a busy day of exploration.

Take a day trip to the charming city of Taormina. Start things off with an orientation walk, where you’ll notice the Greek influence in the architecture. Walk through the back streets, gardens, and perhaps visit the world-famous Greek theatre and the cathedral.

Enjoy a free day in the charming Catania until your 6pm group meeting.

Today it’s time to come face-to-face with the volcano that towered over you yesterday, we’re taking a day trip to drive up Mt Etna, Europe’s largest active volcano. Drive up the northern flank of the volcano and strap on your walking shoes for an easy walk through the spectacular Valle del Bove (Bull Valley), a valley formed when the original crater of Etna collapsed.

Wake up excited and ready to explore the beautiful city of Palermo. You’ll have the option to visit nearby Monreale this morning, situated in a panoramic position above Palermo with fantastic views over the city and the sea. You’ll get a chance to visit the cathedral here, described as one of the ‘wonders of the medieval world’, and climb to its roof. Alternately, you might like to take a free morning to wander the city at your own will. This evening, perhaps share a bite to eat and toast to the week that was with your group before the adventure comes to an end tomorrow.

Your adventures come to an end today after breakfast. If you’d like to stay and explore more in Palermo we can arrange additional accommodation on request (subject to availability).

France and Italy by Train

Your Guide to Train Travel in France & Italy: Paris to Rome Trains & More

Rome to Sicily by Train

Bursting with Mediterranean character, Sicily is a world away from Italy’s big northern cities. Yet, the charismatic island layered with millennia of history is easily reached on direct trains from Rome to Sicily.

Traveling from Rome to Sicily by train is a long journey. But sleeper services and adapted rail ferries make it a true rail adventure. We look at how to get to Sicily from Rome by train and why the journey is a compelling alternative to air travel.

Sicily by Train Summary:

  • Sicily has the largest rail network of any Mediterranean island, offering travelers the opportunity to explore the island’s rich architectural and cultural heritage by train.
  • With 922 miles of coastline, magnificent views, and access to notable towns, Sicily’s extensive rail network provides reliable, convenient, and affordable transportation options.
  • While some parts of the island may require bus or car travel, the train routes offer a unique and picturesque experience for those who prefer slower travels across Italy.

The instinct for many vacationers will be to look to the skies when considering the best way to get from Rome to Sicily. After all, the distance from Rome to Sicily is over 300 miles (482 km) and crosses the Strait of Messina.

However, trains to Sicily will please unhurried travelers happy to trade vacation time for an absorbing ride down the Italian peninsula and across the beautiful island.

When booking trains from Rome to Sicily, several options are presented. You can’t beat a direct InterCity train from Rome to Palermo or Catania for convenience and value. One ticket and one train, ferry included.

The drawback is that a direct InterCity train from Rome to Palermo, Messina, or Catania can take 1-3 hours longer than indirect services with multiple connections. But with fares starting at €22.90 and a choice of sleeper or daytime services, it is the smoothest and least expensive option.

Best of all, direct trains board specially adapted rail ferries. Daytime passengers are asked to disembark the train. It’s the ideal opportunity to stretch your legs, breathe in the salty sea air, and savor the Mediterranean views.

InterCity trains from Rome to Sicily are a step down from Frecce class trains, yet modern and comfortable. Power sockets, air-conditioning, and ample luggage space are standard.

InterCity second-class carriages are arranged 2×2, whereas first-class carriages are organized in a 2×1 formation. There’s not much to separate the experience. Although if you’re traveling alone, a single seat might be tempting.

InterCity trains do not have onboard catering and WiFi. With the Rome to Palermo train journey taking nearly 12 hours, you’ll want to stock up on food and refreshments before departure. There’s a decent market-like food hall, Mercato Centrale , right under Roma Termini station, or plenty of shops nearby.

In Messina, direct InterCity trains split and head to Palermo or Catania. You cannot move between these carriages during transit, so double-check you’re in the correct section.

The alternative to an InterCity Rome to Sicily train is a mix of indirect services on Frecce, InterCity, and Regionale trains.

As there are just 4 daily InterCity trains from Rome to Sicily, indirect trains offer a wider choice of departure and journey times. You can also consider breaking the trip up with a layover along the route.

Whichever route you choose, all services converge on Villa San Giovanni, Calabria. Almost within touching distance of Messina, it is the shortest and fastest route, with numerous daily ferry crossings.

Ferries from Villa San Giovanni or Messina are operated by Caronte & Tourist and Blu Jet . Crossings take just 20 minutes, starting from €2.50 for a single fare. The fare can be bolted onto all pre-booked rail tickets.

If you want flexibility on which Sicily trains to catch, book a Rome to Messina train and use fixed-price Regionale services on the island. You’ll need to bounce from Messina Marittima to Messina Centrale, a 5-minute walk or train journey.

Italo, the slick private Italian rail operator, offers a daily service from Roma Termini to Messina, ferry fare included. But if you’re heading to Palermo or Catania, further tickets must be booked with Trenitalia, the national rail operator, or an online service like Omio .

It is more practical to book the complete journey with Trenitalia, where you can compare direct and indirect services for the entire Rome to Palermo train journey.

Frecciarossa and Frecciargento trains are available to Naples on indirect routes. Among the best trains on the Italian network, you can expect free Wi-Fi, onboard FRECCIA Bistrò café-bar , and upgrades for roomier seats and complimentary drinks and snacks.

While the extra facilities on Frecce trains are tempting, traveling direct from Rome to Sicily by train eliminates the risk of missed connections and the need to drag luggage from train to train.

Our advice: book an InterCity service up to 4 months before travel. Stock up with a few Italian delicacies. Create a cozy nest for napping. Then sit back, relax, relish the views, and forget your troubles as your train snakes down lo Stivale, the boot of Italy.

There’s plenty to excite sightseers en route. Rome to Sicily trains pass through Naples and under the gaze of the still-active Mount Vesuvius.

The ferry crossing from Villa San Giovanni to Messina is a highlight. Rail buffs will love using the unusual train ferries. While the short crossing rewards everybody with striking views across the Strait of Messina. Far more exciting than arriving by plane!

Rome to Sicily by Sleeper Train

Overnight trains leap off the Trenitalia page when assessing how to get to Sicily from Rome with minimum fuss.

The two InterCityNotte sleeper trains match the day service but come with couchettes and cabins instead of seats.

Heavy sleepers can put their head down in the Eternal City, enjoy a night of uninterrupted sleep, and awake in Sicily as the sun rises. It’s a diverting escapade and economical use of precious vacation time. You’ll still be smiling when your credit card bill lands, having knocked a night off the vacation hotel bill.

Sleeper trains from Roma Termini head to various destinations in Sicily. The most popular are Messina (8 h 44 mins), Palermo (12h 57 mins), and Catania (11 h 10 mins.) Stops are made at other destinations along those routes.

Rome to Sicily sleeper trains depart at 20.31 and 23.00, so you can choose whether to arrive for breakfast or lunch. Barely sating hunger pangs until you hit the Sicilian trattorias is a basic trolley service. Snacks and other drinks can be purchased, but it pays to stock up with rations before departure.

When booking, choose between a couchette (cucetta) or a private cabin (cabina.)

Women-only (donna) and mixed-gender couchettes are provided. There are four couchettes per cabin, so you can book them all to create your own private family space. Beds fold into seating when not in use.

Complimentary coffee, juice, water, and a sweet or savory snack are included with a couchette booking.

The alternative to a couchette is a single cabin ( Vagone Letto Deluxe Uso Singolo ) at approximately double the price.

The upgrade is noticeable. Aside from a single bed, you get a personal washbasin and travel kit. Towels and ready-made beds await, along with additional snacks.

Although the process of boarding the rail ferries is far from silent, you might need an alarm set if you want to see the Straits of Messina. Passengers are not asked to leave the train but can alight and briefly enjoy the views and marvel at the peculiar sight of a train on a boat.

Whether you curl up in your couchette or chat the night away with fellow travelers, getting from Rome to Sicily by sleeper train is a fun and inexpensive journey. Economical in time and cost, the magic of falling asleep in Rome and waking up in Sicily is priceless.

What people love about Sicily Tours

We enjoyed ourselves and that is the principal objective in any holiday. Travelling in April meant that the weather was perfect for us - not too hot. The hotels were good - the Mercure in Palermo and the one in Agrigento excellent. Either lunch or dinner was laid on and we're of a high standard. The sites we visited were truly impressive although sometimes a little fleeting. Sicily is a big island so we did spend a lot of time on the coach. Thankfully we had a smart vehicle, Dino the driver was brilliant but the most plaudits have to go to Angelo the tour guide. Angelo was in turns helpful, informative, knowledgeable and great company. He went out of his way on a number of occasions to assist members of our party be it with lost property, illness or other mishaps. The tour was great value and I would strongly recommend.
Very well organised tour. Communications were timely and clear. Hotels were in very well chosen locations with comfortable rooms and excellent breakfasts. Local guides were informative.Transport in mini-vans was efficient and comfortable.
Good guides and good hotel and meals. Didn't expect my initial group of 30 to swell to 45 a few days later. Such a large number made visiting sites difficult. Didn't have listening devices for the first 3 days. Couldn't hear guides very well. Didn't expect to have to pay entrance fees. Web site should make that clear. Loved the selection of sited we visited.

Dimensione Sicilia - Dimsi Incoming Operator Srl

"There was great confusion among my tour friends because this tour in reality is very different from how it is described. The tour company offers two different tours (round-trips starting at Palermo and Catania). In fact, wherever you start, you join in to the tour from the other starting point en route. So at Palermo our new group of 16 joined a 24 person group that started at Catania, and when we reached Catania, they left and were replaced by a new 20+ person group. So this is almost always (according to the guide) a 40 person, full-bus tour. Additionally, there are Spanish language tours by the same company using the same routes. This means the schedule and activities are designed for two, 40-person, full-bus tours to operate simultaneously (again, I checked this with the tour guide, who confirmed it). The guide and driver were very good. Some of the included dinners were poor in quality. We had one unannounced hotel change, and the hotels in general were average. Some of the days were very taxing physically, especially the day in Syracusa, with 15000+ steps. Overall, Sicily is a great tour destination, and this tour hits the highlights. However, the tour did not quite meet our expectations due to its size.

An Easy Travel Guide to Rome, Italy

V isiting the Eternal City for the first time? Rome is one of the most visited cities in Italy and we created an easy travel guide to Rome so that you know the best things to see and do.

In this post, we’re sharing all we’ve learned from our vacations in Rome to help you plan your getaway. We’ll cover the most popular neighborhoods, the best things to see and do, how to get around in Rome, the best time of the year to visit, how to get to central Rome from FCO Airport, and tips for traveling.

Where is Rome

Rome is located in the region of Lazio, near the and is undoubtedly one of the most popular destinations in Italy. It has the highest population of all cities in Italy and sits about 1 hour from the western coast.

And when it comes to tourism, it’s no surprise that visitors from around the globe travel to Rome to see its beauty and Renaissance art, experience Roman cuisine and Italian cooking , shop the fashion capital, discover the piazzas and fountains, explore the historical landmarks, or even practice Italian phrases that they’ve learned.

The various neighborhoods are the most widely visited by tourists because they are where most attractions can be found. Traveling through the city is easy on foot, but you should also consider the Rome sightseeing bus or the Rome golf cart tours .

The Best Time of Year to Visit Rome

Rome can be extremely uncomfortable in the summer months (primarily June through September). In April and May, the spring temperatures are nice, the mornings are cool, and by noon you probably won’t need a jacket.

Each neighborhood of Rome has museums, churches, gardens, parks, and iconic spots to visit. This list gives a brief description of each district, and helps you understand what to see in each neighborhood. It will come in handy for deciding where to stay in Rome while planning your trip.

You may need to take public transportation to reach a specific neighborhood depending on where you stay. However, once you arrive, the area is completely walkable and getting from one point of interest to another is easy.

How to Get Around Rome

Getting around the cobbled-stoned streets of Rome is not hard. I’ve walked, biked, and bused throughout Rome and loved it! All are great ways to get around and the method you choose depends on how much time you have and your personal preference.

I recommend the  Big Bus Tour  or a Golf Cart Tour in Rome if you are short on time or if you booked your travel in the dead heat of summer (which can be intensely hot).

With these tours, you’ll see all the top Rome attractions with audio commentary in your language of choice. If you choose an open top tour bus, the added benefit is free wi-fi and for 3 extra euros, you can use your ticket for two days (it is worth it).

When it comes to seeing Rome, walking can not be avoided especially when getting to an attraction that require climbing hilly pathways or navigating ancient streets. In my opinion, being on foot is one of the best ways to travel in Rome.

Exploring the narrow streets can lead you to the most marvelous pasta, the creamiest gelato, or the most perfect pasta! I highly recommend visiting the Trastevere neighborhood for  Italian street food .

Public Transportation

This is the best option for getting to a part of town that is more than 20 minutes on foot, especially if visiting a museum or park. Save your energy and use public transportation for less than 2 euros. You can purchase them at the tobacconist store.

You will need to validate your ticket upon boarding the bus (it’s an honor system). Getting caught with an un-validated ticket can result in a fine. You should also use a really good map of Rome.

Bike or Vespa

Peddling around the city on your own time feels so liberating. Bike rental is very affordable and is an enjoyable way to experience the outdoors, get some exercise to make up for all the  Italian breakfasts  that you eat, and explore Rome.

You can find rentals for as little as 13 euros for 24 hours, complete with lock, for a standard bike. The price for e-bikes is higher.

Getting around on a two-passenger scooter is loads of fun!  Rent a Vespa to skirt traffic or explore outside the city. They can be rented by the hour or day. This will make your trip to Rome memorable as you travel in true Italian style!

How to Get to Central Rome from FCO Airport

There are several options to get from Leonardo da Vinci International Airport to the center of the city. I found the train to be the quickest and most affordable especially if you’ve had a long day of travel and want to get to Termini station.

The most economical way to get from the airport to the city center is via a shuttle bus service from the airport. You can travel conveniently between Rome’s city center and the airport and take pleasure in a stress-free arrival or departure from the city.

The ride takes about 50 minutes and departures run from the airport every 30 to 40 minutes so you have time to collect your luggage. Shuttles stop in Terminal 3’s arrivals section. Look for the respective service at the arrival platform.

Terravision offers a shuttle service for less than 8 euros it’s quite popular. The buses are air-conditioned and there is no cost to bring your luggage aboard. It goes directly to Termini station with no extra stops.

Another option is the public transportation system, which costs about 6 euros. The bus stops multiple times in the city center, including one close to the Vatican and one at Termini Station, throughout the 45- to 1-hour one-way trip.

Buses halt in Terminal 3’s arrivals section, at number 14. You can purchase tickets at the airport desk or online.

A taxi is quite expensive. It will set you back almost 50 euros and the ride takes just as long as a shuttle service (about 50 minutes). You can find the taxis at the arrival level of Terminal 1 and Terminal 3.

The Leonardo Express train is less than 20 euros and runs every 15 minutes during peak periods. It is operated by Trenitalia and the ride takes about 30 to 40 minutes.

If you wait to collect your luggage, and then make your way to the window or kiosk to purchase your ticket, note that many others will be doing the same. Hate long lines? You can purchase tickets in advance and be ready for validation after boarding the train.

I can’t recommend a car rental unless you plan a day trip and need a set of wheels. Rome is completely walkable. Not to mention, even Italians know that finding a parking space can be a hassle.

Tips for Visiting Rome

I adore visiting Italy. And no trip would be complete without seeing some of the most iconic and historic spots in the Eternal City.

Don’t make the mistake (that I made on my first trip) and skip these incredible spots! Fortunately, I was able to see them on return visits!

Whether you are visiting the Vatican for the first time or returning because you tossed a coin into the Trevi fountain, these Rome travel tips will come in handy to make your stay enjoyable.

  • Be prepared! Read these tips on the essentials for an international flight .
  • Think comfort when flying coach , it will help you stay calm and confident.
  • Beware of scammers, pickpockets, and panhandlers. It’s a thing in Europe and it can happen when you least expect it.

So, what are you waiting for? Book that flight to Rome and thank me later.
