Powerwolf – “blessed and possessed (tour edition)” [album review].

Fresh off of touring with Epica and Beyond The Black in Europe, Powerwolf rest only to focus on continuing their festival celebrations later on. Good thing you have the marvelous tour edition of Blessed and Possessed to experience beforehand.

With 2016 being one of their biggest years so far for Germany’s Powerwolf, Napalm Records saw fit to gift fans and newcomers alike with a re-released tour edition of Blessed and Possessed (also containing a bonus CD of their live headlining performance from Summer Breeze in 2015). From their songs to related album art and image, this serves their brand of epic power metal quite well. To say that their popularity has been on the rise these past few years would well be stating the obvious.

I don’t think a blow-by-blow account of their various heavy blasts of grandiose tales can do anything to raise the stature of band or recordings. Suffice to say that anyone who has not seen/heard the band, shall fully appreciate this Summer Breeze show (replete with loads of stage banter). Their sonic prowess is just as lethal and captivating as their recorded output, but brought to life with and in stadiums as one can attest. It’s also rather joyous to hear huge crowds chanting melodies with bands, bonding all as one in the moment.

For someone who has only lately discovered the mighty beasts of metal, this would serve as a good reason to get this. The various packaging incarnations of this release are lavish as well, as a fan of bands who put all around thought into their recordings. If anything, this is more like a celebration or thank you for fans of the band and label, from Powerwolf. Also one can see their intentions were to be able to present the Live experience wherever their legions might live. While those among the appreciative say thanks, here’s to them properly thanking international fans who’ve been patiently waiting and actually plan a North American/World tour proper, for all to be administered the ‘Metal Mass’ up close and personal.

Back in the day, you didn’t bother buying a DVD for 6 months because you knew there was going to be a “Special Edition” with extra stuff on for the same price. Now it seems the musical equivalent is the “Tour Edition” as bands update a recent release with an extra disc. Anthrax are doing it with a bunch of demos to coincide with their February dates and Powerwolf are adding a live CD to  Blessed & Possessed for their live shows around the same time.

What we have left is a reasonable mix with the emphasis on more recent material.  Blood of the Saints and  Preachers of the Night get the lion’s (wolf’s) share of the setlist with the older material bookending proceedings ( Lupus Dei ‘s intro kicks things off with the title track ending the show).

Talking of voices, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that all the between-song chatter (and there’s a fair bit) is all in German. I don’t speak German. However, it’s amusing to hear the occasional modern English word chucked in as other languages start stealing phrases from us, given that we’ve been ripping many of them off for a thousand years or so. Prime example is “GermanGermanGerman GermanGerman Circle Pit GermanGerman German” before “Amen & Attack”. A silly point, but hey.

Overall the album suggests Powerwolf are an outstanding live act. Certainly, the press release that came with our review copy went on and on about how great they are live, but (as usual) they are playing only one poxy UK date on the upcoming tour (Shepherd’s Bush Empire on February 3rd). Until they tour the UK properly (and I really wish they would!), I’m just going to have to take their word for it and settle for listening to this, and  Alive in the Night,  over and over.

Yay! to this extended album,  Boo! to the lack of touring!

Powerwolf – Blessed & Possessed Review

The title track is full of blood, piss and fire just as you’d expect from a Powerwolf ditty. What I didn’t foresee was that the track would remind me so much of “Amen & Attack.” This is just the start of a very common vein that runs though Blessed & Possessed . Each slickly delivered anthem reminds you of something the band’s done in the past. “Dead Until Dark” harkens back to “Cardinal Sin” and “Son of a Wolf,” while “Higher Than Heaven” rings out with the striking resemblance to “In the Name of God (Deus Vult).” These are great tracks but I’m not particularly thrilled that they’re being rehashed.

Blessed & Possessed isn’t all about Powerwolf ripping off Powerwolf . “Sanctus Dominus” starts off with some unexpected Avantasia -like symphonic excess before Matthew Greywolf drops a couple of flashy, lycra clad, hair metal-styled guitar solos to please the easy listening masses. “Sacramental Sister” is built on a triumphant opening that feels more like the kind of somber melo-death I expect from In Mourning . With both tracks, as soon as Attila Dorn begins his signature over-the-top croon, things head right back into Powerwolf ’s tried and true wheelhouse.

Attila Dorn sounds as strong as ever vocally, but when you compare his contributions to early albums like Return in Bloodred and Lupus Dei , you can’t help but notice the excessively dramatic commercialized style he’s adopted of late, eschewing the gravelly rumble and the in-check theatrics of Return in Bloodred . The modern production style used on Blessed & Possessed also reminds me of that used on Blood of the Saints and Preachers of the Night . It makes Attila Dorn sound larger than life, and coaxes out the symphonic elements in “Army of the Night” and “Sanctus Dominus” while bringing Matthew and Charles Greywolf’s nimble guitar melodies and the cleanly delivered, well timed beats of Roel van Helden to the fore.

Outside of a few fun moments in the title track, “Army of the Night” and “Sacramental Sister,” Blessed & Possessed does nothing more than prove Powerwolf are spinning their musical wheels. It seems they’ve run out of ideas, and many of their newer tracks feel too interchangeable and formulaic to be a necessary addition to anybody’s playlist. Is this the end of the road for Powerwolf ? Only time will tell.
