Free Things to Do in Denver

Throughout the city, there are countless attractions and activities that will cost you absolutely nothing, including museums, festivals and tours. Find free things to do in Denver this weekend or on your upcoming trip to Denver.

Heart of Art

Denver's  Golden Triangle Creative District  neighborhood brims with more than 30 art galleries and artists' studios showcasing the innovative wares of nationally renowned talent and regional up-and-comers. First Friday Art Walk, a shuttled gallery tour that takes place the first Friday of each month, is a terrific way to tour art marts like  Walker Fine Art . The Golden Triangle art galleries are bordered by Speer Boulevard, Colfax Avenue and Lincoln Street. Shuttle tours begin at the Osage Street Light Rail Station.

Colorado State Capitol Tour

The Colorado State Capitol , modeled after the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C., is a stunning spectacle embellished with stained glass depicting events and people inherent to Colorado, coupled with gorgeous Colorado white granite, rose onyx and yule marble. To see if you've got what it takes to adjust to the altitude, climb the 99-step spiral staircase to an open-air deck affording jaw-dropping views of the city skyline and Rocky Mountains. The Corinthian-styled building, famed for its gold-plated dome rising 272 feet above the ground, offers temporary exhibits, visitor galleries and complimentary tours , Monday through Friday.

A local's favorite, the Tattered Cover Book Store.

Tattered Cover Book Store is one of the top independent booksellers in the country.

The Denver Center for the Performing Arts is the second-largest in the United States.

Denver is home to one of only two mints in the United States, producing nearly 50 million coins a day.

Denver is home to one of only two mints in the United States.

Tattered Cover Book Store

No visit to Denver would be complete without a journey through the  Tattered Cover Book Store , one of the top independent booksellers in the country. This astounding literary marvel boasts several metro Denver locations, but the store in the renovated Lowenstein Theater on a burgeoning stretch of East Colfax is the talk of the town. Grab a latte from the in-house java joint, plop down in one of the overstuffed chairs or sofas to wrap your hands around the latest bestseller, or attend a free book signing or author lecture from big names like John Gray, Al Gore, Annie Leibovitz and Garrison Keillor. Tattered Cover's newest location is at  Denver Union Station .

United States Mint Tour

To see where your currency is conceived (sorry, no free handouts), follow the money trail to the  Denver U.S. Mint . The free, 45-minute tours are led by knowledgeable guides and provide a fascinating look into the history of coinage. Both kids and adults will love getting up close and personal with the shiny pocket change that streams off the production lines. Tours are available Monday through Thursday (excluding Federal holidays). All visitors must be 7 years and older. See  the mint's  latest policies.

Denver Central Library

Denver Central Library has an impressive art gallery on the seventh floor. The library is best known, perhaps, for its Western History Collection, which covers the earliest explorations, Spanish land grants, Native American history, the gold rush era and the present day with a particular focus on the Rocky Mountain West.

Free Festivals Year-round

Denver's festivals are fun and often completely free. You'll be exposed to only-in-Denver sights, sounds and tastes. Don't miss the  Cherry Creek Arts Festival , held every summer, or the  Colorado Dragon Boat Festival  in Sloan's Lake Park in July.  Learn more about Denver's festivals.

Get Cultured

The Denver Center for the Performing Arts – home to the Newton Auditorium, Temple Buell Theatre, Ellie Caulkins Opera House, Garner Galleria Theatre and a wealth of smaller stages – hosts several free performances throughout the year. There are rules, of course: No advanced reservations are accepted; seating is general admission; children under six years old are not allowed; and tickets are only available on a first-come, first-served basis on the day of the performance. Despite the regulations, it's worth braving the lines to experience some of the best theater in the country.

Red Rocks Park & Amphitheatre

Carved from towering red rock monuments,  Red Rocks Park & Amphitheatre  is one of the world's most renowned concert venues. When there's no concert, the free Visitor Center has a museum and Performers Hall of Fame, while the surrounding park has hiking trails that weave in, around and over the colorful red rocks.

Hammond's Candy Factory

Anyone with even the smallest sweet tooth will love this free tour, which gets you behind the scenes at  Hammond's , a company that has been making candy in Denver since 1920. You'll come away with a newfound respect for the candy industry,   plus plenty of free samples.

City Park Jazz

For more than 20 years, the bandstand at  City Park  has played host to some of Denver's greatest live jazz performances – and they've all been completely free. During the summer months, bring out your beach chair or picnic blanket and get ready for a foot-tappin' good time.

Children's Museum of Denver at Marsico Campus Joy Park Free Nights

Joy Park and Adventure Forest are open for FREE on the third Friday of each month from May to September from 4 – 8 pm (or dusk). Reservations are required to guarantee entry.

Dikeou Collection

There's nowhere else you're going to see a pair of inflatable, 16-foot-tall rubber bunnies, right? One of The Mile High City's most fascinating art locales,  The Dikeou Collection  is a private collection of contemporary art, with photography, drawings, sculptures and installations by more than 25 artists from around the world. Free and open to the public, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. or by appointment.

Free Things to do in Denver

Meet locals at a farmer’s market.

There are many different farmer’s markets in Denver and the surrounding area, especially throughout the summer . These are completely free to visit and can be a great way to meet other locals!

Even though it’s free to visit, you may not be able to help yourself but buy some of the incredible things that get sold at these markets.

One of the most popular markets in Denver is actually hosted right at Denver Union Station , which is impossible to miss if you’ll be staying at a hotel in LoDo.

Walk around the 16th Street Mall

A red and blue bus is picking people up on the street in a city.

One of the best free things to do in Denver tonight is to visit 16th Street Mall. Don’t get me wrong, this is a very touristy street, but it will most likely be where you’re staying because a lot of the hotels surround it.

The mall is located pretty centrally right in LoDo and is filled with shops, bars, restaurants, and more. If you want any souvenirs, the shops here are pretty decent, though they can be a bit on the high end. (Pro tip: for some cooler souvenirs, head to Boulder.)

The mall is fairly long, so if you want to move from shop to shop easily, be sure to make use of the free mall ride. This bus stops at almost every block, and you can hop off and hop on for no charge.

Take in the view from Lost Gulch Overlook

View of the sun setting over a snowy mountains

While it’s technically not located directly in Denver, Lost Gulch Overlook is a short drive from the city center, and it should be on your list. This is especially true if you’ll only be visiting Denver for a short period of time because it is one of the closer outdoor lookouts.

Lost Gulch Overlook is located in Boulder, one of Denver’s best day trips. The view from the overlook is incredible, and you’ll often find people taking senior photos or even couples photos up there. You might even sport an engagement session or two!

One of the great things about this lookout is that it’s not commonly busy. Every time I’ve been there, it’s been super easy to get a spot, even in the middle of summer. There are benches, so you could even pack a picnic lunch and eat it while enjoying the view.

Attend the Five Points Jazz Festival

The Five Points Jazz Festival is an annual event that takes place in Denver. The purpose of the festival is to celebrate the history of Five Points, one of the neighborhoods in Denver. It normally takes place in June.

For those who love music, you absolutely can’t miss out on the Five Points Jazz Festival because it’s one of the best free things to do in Denver Colorado. It can also be a great activity with kids!

Head to Union Station & Visit the Shops

View of Union Station in Denver

It’s nearly impossible to miss Union Station when visiting Denver. In fact, it’s very possible that you made it into the city by taking the train from the airport to this train station. You can also take the bus or even the Amtrak and light rail at this station.

Union Station is a historic landmark that is truly breathtaking. The inside has unique architecture and is truly a marvel. In winter, it gets all decked out with holiday lights and trees; you won’t want to miss it!

The station is almost always busy, but it’s worth at least stopping inside and checking out the shops. Right outside are more spots to sit and also a fun fountain that turns on in the summer months.

If you’re hungry and do want to spend some money, be sure to check out ACME Delicatessen (they have the best sandwiches), Milkbox Ice Cream (for the best ice cream), or Snooze. an AM Eatery (for the best breakfast and brunch).

Snap a photo at the Welcome to Golden sign

A girl in an orange hat smiles by a sign that says welcome to Golden.

If you’ll be renting a car during your trip to Denver, then hop on over to the town of Golden . This town is quaint and has a distinctly wild west feel to it, and the main area is lined with fun shops that you won’t want to miss.

One of the most photographic spots of the town is their Welcome to Golden sign. It spans right over the street, and in winter, it even gets decorated with fun holiday decor! This town is always a lot quieter than Boulder, which is another great place to visit nearby.

Take a tour of the Colorado State Capitol Building

Gold domed historic building

Located in downtown Denver, you absolutely must take a tour of the Colorado State Capitol Building! It has a bright gold dome on top and is at the end of the 16th Street Mall, so you can visit both in the same afternoon.

There are free tours of the Colorado State Capitol building Monday through Friday between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. You don’t even have to make a reservation for the tour unless you’ll be touring with ten people or more.

This is easily one of the best free things to do in downtown Denver.

Find Denver’s best photo spots

A girl smiling with a red beanie and white hoodie while standing in front of a black and white wall in Denver's RiNo.

Because of how picturesque Denver is, there are actually tons of amazing spots to take a photo that will help you remember your day in the city. Some great spots for a photo include Red Rocks (which you’ll learn about later in this post), Confluence Park, and Coors Field.

Explore Tattered Cover Bookstore

Girl holding a book that says "Subpar Parks" while standing in front of a window in Denver that says "Tattered Cover."

I know what you’re thinking: a bookstore on the list of free things to do in Denver? Well, duh! The Tattered Cover Book Store is one of the best Denver bookstores, and it has quite a few locations throughout the city. The best one downtown is in McGregor Square by Coors Field.

Dating back to the 1970s, this bookstore is truly a staple in the city. They have tons of fun books, and a lot of the locations even have a cafe. Be sure to take some time to peruse the store.

Maybe even grab a book or two if you do want to spend some money during this otherwise free activity!

Walk the Cherry Creek Trail

Walking along the Cherry Creek Trail is one of the best free things to do in Denver. It’s fairly long, but you can definitely just do a portion of it to enjoy what the city’s path has to offer.

The trail is paved, so it’s fairly easy. Walk kids with a stroller, go on a morning jog, or just walk part of it to get your legs moving. Along parts of the trail, you can even walk beside a peaceful creek.

There are also many more spots to hike along the Cherry Creek Reservoir.

People watch in Confluence Park

A rushing river is next to a bridge

Situated right downtown by 16th Street, Confluence Park is one of the most peaceful spots that you can find in the city. We used to live in LoDo and would come to this park fairly often when the weather was nice for either a quick walk or even a picnic.

This is where the Cherry Creek meets with the South Platte River.

There’s lots of green space throughout the park where you can sit and enjoy the view or even lay out a blanket. People always bring their furry friends, too, so you may even meet a puppy or two while you’re there!

In the summer, this can be a pretty good spot to catch the sunrise or the sunset. It’s usually mostly filled with locals who live in the apartments nearby.

Visit The Denver Central Library

Gray and brick library under a blue sky.

Another of the best free things to do in Denver is to go to the Denver Public Library . Libraries are always a good bet if you’re looking for something affordable to do in any city, and the one in Denver is no exception.

The library opened in 1889, and visitors are welcome to go inside and explore. If you’re a book lover, this can be a fun way to pass the time, and it can also be a great place to explore if it’s raining during your trip.

They host some events throughout the year, so be sure to check their website to see if there will be one during your trip.

Watch the National Western Stock Show Parade

Hosted in January each year, the National Western Stock Show Parade is a unique event that you should add to your calendar. During this parade, guests can see more than thirty different Longhorn cattle!

It’s a super fun event to attend because you see a piece of the Wild West juxtaposed with the modernity of the city. It’s very different than anything else you’d see in Denver!

Check out the view at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Red rocks under a blue sky

A short drive from downtown Denver is Red Rocks Park & Amphitheatre . While it’s commonly known for being the top spot in Colorado to watch a live show, it’s also a great spot to hike, relax, and take in the view.

Everywhere you look at this landmark, you’ll see bright red rocks and the mountains in the distance. It’s open during the day and can be visited for free. Note that it does close to the public a little earlier on days that there is a concert scheduled.

Sometimes, you can even attend yoga classes and other fitness groups here!

Go stargazing (no, really)

Even though Denver is a city, there are spots to go stargazing nearby. That’s one of the beauties of Denver; it’s like New York City, where you can’t escape the city. In fact, you can end up in the middle of the wilderness with just a 30-45 minute drive, depending on the direction.

There are a few spots to go stargazing in Denver and the surrounding area, including Red Rocks Park & Amphitheater, Garden of the Gods, and Rocky Mountain National Park if you want to make the drive.

Visit The Denver Mint

Front of the US mint.

If you love money and history, then you’ll want to stop by The Denver Mint . This museum is fun and unique and was first opened back in 1906. Tickets for a tour are free, but time for the tours is limited because it’s such a popular one in the area.

When you’re done, be sure to stop in the gift shop.

Attend Denver PrideFest

Each year, Denver goes all out with PrideFest . We’re part of the queer community, and we can attest to that! It’s a super fun event that is completely free to attend, and it normally happens during one of the last weekends in June.

What’s so great is that there are also other events happening throughout June for Pride as well, especially in the area. Boulder even has its own fun Pride events, so if you’re in Denver in June at all, be sure to look into those!

Explore the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame

If you’re looking for free things to do in Denver CO and you love sports, then consider going to the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame . There’s free admission, and it’s one of the more overlooked free attractions in the city.

The museum first opened back in 1965 and is located at Empower Field at Mile High. This is where the Denver Broncos play, so the environment is super fun.

Hike up to St Mary’s Glacier

A white glacier is on a mountain near a lake.

One of the most beautiful hikes in the Denver area is St Mary’s Glacier . This is a moderate hike that does have quite a bit of elevation (around 1000+ feet), but it’s rather short otherwise, and the view is so rewarding.

It’s located near Idaho Springs, and while the hike itself is free, you do have to pay a fee to park. Consider carpooling with others in the area for it to cost less!

Relax at City Park

City of Denver skyline

To get outdoors, head to City Park. Denver has many parks , but this is one of the best. Relaxing there is one of the best free things to do in Denver this weekend and any weekend at that! The park is absolutely massive and covers around 300+ acres of land, so it’s easy to find a quiet spot for yourself.

Throughout the park, there are trails for walking and biking. The Denver Museum of Nature & Science and the Denver Zoo are also located in City Park.

Note that the park is a bit outside of downtown, so it is easier to get there by car or by using public transportation. We tried riding the electric scooters there from LoDo once, and needless to say, we don’t recommend trying to get there like that, haha!

In the summer months, you can even attend City Park Jazz to enjoy some music outdoors.

Catch the New Year’s Eve fireworks show

Every year in Denver, there’s a fireworks show on New Year’s Eve. It’s usually downtown and is completely free to see! Plus, if you’re in LoDo in one of the hotels for your trip, you may even be able to see them from there.

The best place to scout out these fireworks is along the 16th Street Mall. Sometimes, they’ll even be playing music along the Mall that will sync up perfectly with the fireworks. It’s a super fun event!

Attend the Christmas Market

Red sign that says Denver Christkindl Market.

I won’t lie; ever since moving here, one of our favorite Denver events has been the Denver Christkindl Market . It’s free to attend, though it can get quite crowded. We recommend going as early as possible in the day to avoid the long lines for food!

It’s held annually in December (sometimes starting in late November) leading up to Christmas . As one of the best free things to do in Denver at night (and during the holiday months), admission is free, but you will have to pay if you want to try any of the food.

I highly recommend trying some schnitzel, GlĂŒhwein, or even Spaetzle. Those have been our favorites, and they can’t be beaten! There are also usually some great desserts, too, if you have a bit of a sweet tooth.

Attend the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival

The Colorado Dragon Boat Festival is a free-to-watch event that happens every July. In 2022, it was held at Sloan’s Lake Park, which is a short drive from downtown Denver.

At the festival, similar to the Christmas Market, there are paid booths and other happenings. So, you can definitely buy some tasty Asian food if you want to, or just enjoy watching the boats along the river.

Visit The Source

BBQ platter with three different types of meats, a slice of bread, and a cup of macaroni and cheese.

One of the more unique places to visit in Denver is The Source . It’s technically a hotel but has a market hall, too. It’s free to visit and walk around the interior, which has a super fun industrial vibe to it.

Of course, you can again purchase anything if you want to. There are many places to eat and shop, but our personal favorite is a BBQ place called smƍk. This restaurant truly serves up some of the best BBQ in Denver that we’ve ever had, and it’s so underrated!

Go hiking in Chautauqua Park

Rocks just out of the earth by greenery

If you’re visiting Denver with a car, take the quick trip over to Boulder to hike the Flatirons. This is completely free to do, and it’s one of the most popular hiking spots in the area. It’s also a really easy way to visit the outdoors near Denver without heading all the way to RMNP.

There are lots of different trails here, so you can make the route as long or as short as you want to be. Keep in mind that parking is sometimes limited, so you’ll want to plan on having a bit of an extra walk from your car.

Tour Great Divide Brewery

Obviously one of the best things to do in Denver is to try some of the local beer. If you’re visiting on a budget, though, you can still learn more about the brewery scene by going on a free tour at Great Divide Brewery .

The brewery has been open since 1994, and you do have to be 16 or older to go on the tour. The tours are also limited to only ten people, so try to reserve your spot in advance to make sure you don’t miss out.

See the animals in the Denver Zoo (on a free day!)

Flamingos up close.

While visiting the Denver Zoo is normally a paid excursion, there are certain days of the year when you can visit for free. This can be a great activity if you’re visiting Denver with kids or if you just want to learn more about animals!

You can check out the latest free dates for the Denver Zoo here on their website.

Attend the Denver Parade of Lights

One of the best free activities in the Mile High City for the holidays is to attend the Denver Parade of Lights! This is an annual event that the whole city shows up for. Enjoy watching a parade at night that’s all lit up; it’s truly fun for all ages.

Note that you’ll definitely want to pack for the weather. Winter temperatures in Denver in the winter are seriously no joke!

Visit Denver Central Market

People walk in front of a building that says "Denver Central Market."

Denver Central Market is one of the cool, trendy food halls in the city that you can visit. It’s located in RiNo, an area known for its street art. The food hall is filled with tons of restaurants, so you can buy some food if you want to.

However, even if you just want to walk through, it’s super fun. We always bring our friends and family here when they visit because we love it so much. There are also tons of great Instagram spots in RiNo, and the market is definitely one of them.

Go on a free walking tour

If you’re new to the city of Denver, consider booking a free walking tour! We did one way back when we first moved here in 2020, and it was a great introduction to the city. Plus, you’ll normally get paired with a guide who really knows their stuff.

Note that while the tour is free, a reservation is normally required, no matter who you book through. You’ll also want to give a tip to your guide at the end of the tour to thank them for it.

I’ve done a tour with Denver Walking Tours when my family visited and can highly recommend them!

Catch a movie in the park

Some of the parks in Denver will host free movie nights throughout the summer months! This can be a great way to get outdoors without leaving the city and it’s particularly a fun thing to do among families visiting the area.

Drive through the Rocky Mountain Arsenal Wildlife Refuge

Bison roaming around a field in front of the snowy Rocky Mountains.

One of the hidden gems in Denver is the Rocky Mountain Arsenal Wildlife Refuge . This is completely free to visit, though you will need a car. With a 30-minute drive, you can explore this area of Denver while seeing all types of animals, including bison.

While you won’t always have the best of luck (we’ve visited a few times and only saw the bison super far in the distance), it sure is fun when you get to see them up close!

Attend the Cherry Creek Arts Festival

All art lovers should consider going to the Cherry Creek Arts Festival ! During this event, there are normally more than 200 different exhibitors showcasing work and selling items. Plus, there’s normally great food, too.

You can check out the next dates for the festival on their website, linked above.

Take in the view from Lookout Mountain

The tallest mountain by Golden is Lookout Mountain! So, as you can imagine, it offers truly one of the best views that you can get.

To get the view, you can either hike to the top of it or drive up; the choice is yours. Keep in mind that the drive is beautiful, but if you’re not a fan of heights, you may want to close your eyes until you get to the top!

Go on a peaceful walk in one of Denver’s many parks

Denver County is home to more than 200 different parks, so there are truly so many green spaces. Some of the most peaceful walking trails can be found within these parks.

Seriously, just choose any of them and go on a walk. A lot of these are hidden gems, and you never know what you might find! They are especially tranquil in the early morning when you’ll mostly only find locals walking their dogs.

Hike in Garden of the Gods

People are walking on a trail near red rocks.

A great place to go if you have a car is to head slightly south to Colorado Springs and check out Garden of the Gods . I like to say if you can’t make it out to Moab from Denver, Garden of the Gods is a good option because you can still experience the red rocks and it’s a much closer drive.

It’s completely free to visit and is filled with different walking/hiking trails that you can do. There are simple, easy walks or more difficult ones. My favorite is the Palmer, Buckskin-Charley, Niobrara, and Bretag Trail Loop . It’s long but has great views.

Check out the street art in RiNo

Street art on a wall

One of the coolest parts of the city is RiNo, and truly, it’s because it hasn’t been super overrun by tourists yet. Often, the tourists will be chilling at the bars downtown, and you’ll find all the locals hanging out in RiNo or River North.

This neighborhood is one of the trendiest and is filled with tons of street art. It’s super fun to just walk around the neighborhood and see what you’ll stumble upon. A good starting point is right at Denver Central Market!

Browse the city with Denver Story Trek

Though it may seem a bit touristy, one of the fun Denver activities for free is to explore the city with Denver Story Trek. This is a tour that will take you around the city on your own, and you can listen in or read about each landmark that you visit on their website .

Go to a museum on a free entrance day

As I sort of referenced before, there are quite a few free entrance days throughout the year. These are at a lot of the museums throughout the city, and it can be a great opportunity to learn for free if you happen to be visiting during one of them.

Some of the museums with free entrance days include the Children’s Museum of Denver , Colorado Railroad Museum , and the Denver Art Museum . The Denver Zoo and Denver Botanic Gardens also have free entrance days.

Visit the Denver Skate Park

Do you like skateboarding? Or at least watching people skateboard while you relax? Then you’ll want to head to the Denver Skate Park. It’s one of the coolest free things to do in Denver. The skate park is pretty big and there are always people here showing off some pretty epic moves.

While you’re in the area, be sure to head over to Recess or Happy Camper to grab a bite to eat! These are some of the truly best places to eat in Denver.

Check out Denver’s food halls

woman sitting in front of a brick wall with dairy block painted on it. She wears a red beanie, white hoodie, and jeans.

While a few food halls were mentioned on this list, like The Source and Denver Central Market, there are even more throughout the city that you should try to find! Some of our favorites are Milk Market right in LoDo and Stanley Marketplace .

You don’t even have to buy anything at these food halls to enjoy them. They’re so incredibly fun to walk through, and each has its own unique style!

See the beautiful art in the Clyfford Still Museum

Another great museum with free days is the Clyfford Still Museum in Denver. They have free days throughout the year where you can go and enjoy the art at no extra cost!

These dates are often on the weekend, but not always, so you’ll want to check their website. On average, there’s one free date a month.

As the name suggests, this museum is mostly dedicated to the artwork of Clyfford Still!

Check out the Santa Fe Art District

One of the great outdoor free things to do in Denver is to head to the trendy Santa Fe Art District ! This area is filled with colorful buildings, restaurants, galleries, and more. For a fun time, be sure to attend one of the First Friday Art Walks.

Take a day trip to Rocky Mountain National Park

Mountains in the distance under a blue sksy.

The closest national park in Colorado to Denver is Rocky Mountain National Park . While it’s normally not free to enter, they do have free days throughout the year, normally on MLK Day and the anniversary of the Great American Outdoors Act, among others.

The park normally announces its free days at the beginning of the year, so you may have to do your due diligence, but if you visit on one of those days, there’s no extra cost!

Attend the St Patrick’s Day Parade

Every year, one of the most fun parades to attend in Denver is the St Patrick’s Day Parade . It takes place downtown and is completely free to attend, though you may want to get there early to make sure you can snag a spot to watch.

After, if you do want to spend some money, do some bar hopping in LoDo or RiNo!

Tour Hammond’s Candy Factory

Close up of red and white swirled lollipops.

Yes, you can literally go on a candy factory tour near Denver! Stop by Hammond’s Candy Factory and learn all about how their candy is made on a free tour. If you’re a candy fan, this is one of the free things to do in Denver that you won’t want to miss out on.

The tours are limited to 45 people and run pretty often. They do recommend making a reservation to make sure they save a spot for you.

See the exhibits at the Colorado Music Hall of Fame

If you’re already visiting Red Rocks, be sure to swing by the Colorado Music Hall of Fame . It’s located at the trading post there and is completely free to visit. Any music fan will love perusing the exhibits!

This is different than the musical exhibit on-location at Red Rocks and focuses primarily on Colorado musicians. It normally takes around 45 minutes or so to fully explore and peruse all that the museum has to offer.

Walk around Larimer Square

Colorado flags hanging from light strings.

For a more historic part of the city, head to Larimer Square. It’s located right off of 16th Street Mall, so you could easily explore both places in the same afternoon. Larimer Square is essentially only one block, but it’s filled with tons of character.

This is the oldest square in the city and is often referred to as one of Denver’s historic districts. The buildings haven’t changed since they were first built a few hundred years ago. The street is filled with great restaurants, and there’s tons of outdoor seating!

Plus, the square is often all decorated for some occasion or another.

Go on a scenic drive

Green space with a blue lake in the distance.

There are so many scenic drives in the Denver area, so if you’re feeling up for it, go on one!

There are many to choose from, but some popular ones include the Mount Evans Byway, Peak to Peak Byway, and the Lariat Loop National Scenic Byway. Pack yourself a lunch and some snacks and prepare to be wowed by Colorado’s natural beauty.

places to visit in denver for free

After moving to Denver in 2020, KP & Jessie absolutely fell in love with the beauty of the city (and the entire state of Colorado). Together, they're always seeing more of what Colorado has to offer. They love exploring, going on hikes, and trying tasty foods! When they're not traveling, they can be found watching the latest season of Love Island or hanging out with their cat.

Free things to do in Denver (or nearby)

places to visit in denver for free

By Kyle Harris , Denverite

Looking for things to do this weekend specifically? Here are things to do in Denver this weekend !

No free fun? Hooey!

Tourists and locals alike have many options when it comes to fun, fascinating and otherwise worthwhile things to do without spending a buck. We've put together a list of more than a hundred: galleries, bike rides, hikes, weird sports, museum free days, festivals, legally questionable activities, and a few things that would make your social studies teacher proud (a trip to City Council, anyone?).

One note: Some items involve wheels. If you don't have any, there are rideshare bikes and scooters sitting around town, waiting for you to rent them.

We're eager to add to this list and try new things out ourselves, so let us know what we're missing, at [email protected] .

The best free things to do in Denver

16th Street Mall , 1001 16th Street Mall.

You can spend big at the movie theater, shops and restaurants on the 16th Street Mall, but getting on board the Free Mall Ride is a perfect way to see this Denver tourist strip. Get a taste of downtown's ups and downs. Enjoy mighty-fine people watching and rotating activities like ice skating, rollerskating, piano playing and chess. Better yet, walk or roll (in a wheelchair, not a scooter or bike, which are banned) one way, and ride the other, making stops as you go.

40 West Arts District , West Colfax Ave., Lakewood.

One of the Denver area's fastest-rising arts destinations is in the nearby western suburb of Lakewood. Just catch a bus up Colfax Avenue and check out many of Denver's greatest galleries, which were priced out of the Mile High City and relocated up the street. Those include Next and Edge galleries, Pirate: Contemporary Art and the Chicano Humanities and Arts Council . Along the way, enjoy free audio tours that include artist interviews.

places to visit in denver for free

40 West ArtLine , Lakewood.

While you're at 40 West, walk the 40 West Artline. Journey through four miles of culture and three separate parks, taking in over 100 pieces of public art along the way.

Antique Row , 1200 to 1800 S. Broadway, Denver.

Antique lovers will be happy to know the city's best antique stores are located along one stretch of formerly industrial buildings on South Broadway. Peruse garden supplies, oddities, antiques, and more. Some stuff might make you nostalgic for a bygone age; other artifacts might creep you out -- in a good way?

Art District on Santa Fe , Santa Fe Dr. between Kalamath and Galapago streets, and Alameda and 13th avenues.

Stroll through the Art District on Santa Fe to check out a few of Denver's favorite art galleries, co-ops and small shops. If you're looking for a crowd, head over on First Fridays. Otherwise, for a quieter art browsing experience, go pretty much any other time. And if you're in the neighborhood when it's open, visit Swift's or El Taco de Mexico for some delicious Old Denver grub.

places to visit in denver for free

Auraria Campus , intersection of Colfax Ave. and Speer Blvd.

Home to the University of Colorado Denver , Metro State University and the Community College of Denver , the Auraria Campus was built on top of a historic community. Once its own city, Auraria has roots that go back to the founding of the Denver Metro Area and once vied, with Denver, to be the dominant city in the region. Wander the campus, check out events at the three schools that share the 150 acres, and head to the Tivoli Student Union for a bite or a cup of coffee.

Aurora History Museum , 15051 E. Alameda Pkwy., Aurora.

Dive into the history of Denver's massive neighbor to the east. The Aurora History Museum offers exhibits, educational activities and regular events. Study the growth of Aurora (which, incidentally is bigger than Denver in acreage), the history of road tripping in the United States, transportation and more.

Bison Herd , Take exit 254 off I-70 and follow the signs for Buffalo Herd Overlook, near Genesee Park.

Are you under the impression that bison are extinct in the region? Not so. In fact, the City of Denver has its very own herd. You may have seen them, out of the corner of your eye, as you were driving up I-70. The city has been caring for them since 1914. Go to the overlook for a good look. If you can't see them from there, hike through Genesee Park.

Bike , around town.

Saddle up and pedal the town. Denver is a great city for cycling for fun or commuting. If you're looking to understand how Denver works, how neighborhoods connect and how each place feels, two-wheels is the way to go. Sure, you can't ride on interstates, and there are major routes like Colfax Ave., Colorado Blvd., and Federal Blvd. you should probably avoid. But side streets and bike lanes are often safe and calm.

Pour a cup of coffee and crack open Birdy, a magazine that can be found at various businesses in Capitol Hill. It's filled with killer art, fiction and essays, and it's one of those little literary publications that makes this place so special. If you're looking to tap into underground culture, Birdy is a must-read mag.

Black Cube Nomadic , various spots around the city and beyond.

Denver has abundant art galleries and a glut of public art, but Black Cube's nomadic events and installations offer an ever-changing series of place-based experimentation, from building a dual-purpose water-drainage system/skate park near TAXI to throwing performances at city buildings. We can't tell you exactly what Black Cube is up to, but whatever it is will likely be free and mind-blowing.

Bluff Lake Nature Center , 11255 E. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

If you're looking for a little nature in Central Park, hike over to Bluff Lake Nature Center. We've seen frogs, wild turkeys and deer there. Read wildlife placards, and soak in the beauty. Whether you're looking for a little education or relaxation, this is a great place to spend a couple of hours.

Bouldering, Central Park , 8801 Martin Luther King Jr Blvd. or Carla Madison Recreation Center 2401 E. Colfax Ave.

While both Central Park and Carla Madison Recreation Center offer plenty of fun, rock climbers will be happy to know that they can take a quick trip to either spot and practice their skills on artificial rock walls with hand holds. Scared of falling? Fear not. Wood chips will catch you if you tumble. If homemade structures aren't your bag, drive to the mountains. We hear they're pretty...rocky.

Broomfield Veterans Museum , 12 Garden Center, Broomfield.

When the Broomfield Veterans Museum was founded, it was focused on those who served in World War II. Now the museum has broadened its scope to include veterans from the Civil War through current conflicts and all branches of the military. There are nine rooms of exhibits and 2,500 books to peruse.

Buffalo Bill's Grave , 987 1/2 Lookout Mountain Road, Golden.

William Cody, nicknamed Buffalo Bill, made his name in the 1800s as one of the adventurers and showmen of the Old West. History buffs will enjoy a trip to the (not free) museum atop Lookout Mountain and a free visit to his grave, which offers stunning views of the Great Plains and the Rockies.

Central Library , 10 W. Fourteenth Ave. Pkwy.

Whether you're looking to bring a kid to the recently remodeled children's library, explore the Western History Collection, browse the stacks, surf the internet, peruse art exhibits or check out the room -- and massive table -- where the Summit of the Eight met in 1997, or the public art surrounding the building, the downtown library has a load to explore. Did we mention books?

Central Park , 8801 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

If you're on the east side of town, stroll through the 80-acre Central Park, one of Denver's largest. Picnic, walk the nearby grasslands, sled on snowy days, enjoy the ponds, or cool off in a water play area.

Chicano Humanities and Arts Council , 1560 Teller St., Lakewood.

Denver's long history of Chicano art is on full display at CHAC, a nonprofit gallery that has been championing the community's artists for decades. CHAC was recently priced out of Denver and has found a nearby home in Lakewood's 40 West Art District.

Cheesman Park , between 8th and 13th avenues and Humbolt and Race streets.

Wander the historic grounds of Cheesman Park, picnic under one of many aging trees, toss a frisbee, catch shade (and sometimes an impromptu yoga or dance class) under the neoclassical pavilion, look out at the mountains and check out a placard that identifies the peaks. Cheesman Park was once a burial ground, and when it was dug up, to make way for the park, bodies were moved -- but not all of them. Ghost lovers, delight!

Cherry Creek Regional Trail , at Confluence Park at 15th St.

This 40-mile trail offers bikers, joggers and walkers a glorious, and mostly shaded and paved path through Denver, Arapahoe and Douglas counties. Take a brief jaunt or a full day trek. Do the whole thing, and you'll head through the Cherry Creek Shopping District, past Four Mile House and Historic Park to Cherry Creek State Park and the Cherry Creek Reservoir (bring a tent, and you can camp there for a fee). After that, the trail cuts through Parker Jordan Centennial Open Space and ends near Castlewood Canyon State Park. Fair warning: That's just half way. Now you have to get back.

You power Denverite!

City Council , Cathy Reynolds City Council Chamber at 1437 Bannock St., fourth floor.

Admittedly, City Council meetings are largely haunted by policy wonks. That said, there are few better ways to understand what's going on in a city than attending one -- or more. Plus Council meetings have more drama than a soap opera and can stretch late into the night. Heck, if there's something you think the city's elected leaders need to hear, you can even comment. Council meets most Mondays, starting at 3:30 p.m. and wraps up who knows when.

City Park , 1600 City Park Esplanade

City Park boasts gorgeous trails, lakes and sculptures, offering among the best views in Denver. You'll see people fishing (you need a license to do so), picnicking and playing at playgrounds, including a recently remodeled one . The nearby Denver Zoo, City Park Golf Course and Denver Museum of Nature and Science all are ticketed, but the Zoo and DMNS offer free days throughout the year. Occasionally the park hosts festivals including City Park Jazz, 5K races, the Black Arts Festival and other events.

Civic Center Park , between 14th and Colfax avenues and Bannock St. and N. Broadway

Located between Denver's City and County Building and the Statehouse, Civic Center Park is home to dozens of events each year, splendid paths, an amphitheater, sculptures and more. While the park has been shut down on and off, if it's accessible, it is a perfect place to enjoy a little green when you're downtown (we mean grass, though there are probably people enjoying the other sort of green, too). Over 100 years old, the park is one of the crowning achievements of former Denver Mayor Robert Speer and his City Beautiful movement.

Colfax Avenue

Once upon a time, Playboy magazine nicknamed Colfax Avenue "the wickedest street in America." While new developments and businesses that aren't sex shops, dive bars and porn stores have undermined its seedier side in recent decades, this 26.5 strip still has a lot of its Old Denver grit along with New Denver panache. The characters you'll meet along the way will make it clear why it was a destination for the Beat Generation -- and should be a destination for you.

Colorado Capitol Tours , Lincoln and Colfax Ave.

The gold domed Statehouse, at the corner of Lincoln and Colfax Avenue, is the site of protests on the outside and political sausagemaking on the inside. From all angles, it's a glorious building, well worth a visit (stop by your lawmakers' offices and give them a piece of your mind, while you're there). Free tours, which take place Monday through Friday, at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 2 p.m., include a 99-step step climb up to the dome observation area. Tours are limited to 20 people and available on a first-come-first-served basis.

places to visit in denver for free

Colorado Music Hall of Fame , 17900 Trading Post Rd., Morrison.

Music fans will get a kick out of the Colorado Music Hall of Fame's museum at the Trading Post at the base of Red Rocks Amphitheatre. Learn about musicians with Colorado ties like John Denver, Dianne Reeves, Dan Fogelberg, Philip Bailey of Earth, Wind and Fire, and Judy Collins, along with the promoters who made this state's live music scene as grand as it is.

Colorado Sports Hall of Fame , Empower Field at Mile High, 1701 Mile High Stadium Cir., Suite 500.

Head to the home of the Denver Broncos and learn about the history of sports in Colorado. The museum's exhibits include looks at women in sports, play areas for children, dives into Broncos history and disability in sports, and a spotlight on the latest inductees into the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame.

Commons Park , 2101 15th St.

If you're looking to picnic or lounge near downtown, find a spot in the green oasis in the city that is Commons Park, 22-acres of grassy hills and wetlands stretching between Little Raven St. and the South Platte River. While you're there, explore the public art installations, toss a disc, wander downtown, cross the river and explore nearby neighborhoods. Or just chill. There's a reason the big hill there is colloquially called Stoner Hill to the dismay of some neighborhood groups, and it's not the geology.

Confluence Park , 15th and Little Raven streets.

The South Platte River and Cherry Creek meet at Confluence Park, where people have been gathering for centuries, long before colonization. Why not get in on this essential Denver (and pre-Denver) tradition? These days, Confluence Park is a great place to ( not so safely ) wet your feet, ride a kayak, picnic or simply sit back and enjoy the water.

places to visit in denver for free

Court , 520 W. Colfax Ave. and 1437 Bannock St.

You know how some people love daytime TV court dramas and true crime? Breaking news: Court is happening nearly every weekday in Denver, and it's open to the public. You can watch attorneys debate whether people committed crimes, check out the latest in traffic court or witness how evictions take place. Look, visiting a court can be downright depressing. But so can those true-crime podcasts, and we know many of you listen to them.

Colorado Photographic Arts Center , 1070 Bannock St.

Photography lovers will be captivated by the ever-rotating exhibits at the Colorado Photographic Arts Center, in the Golden Triangle. The 800-plus photos in CPAC's collection can be perused online . The group's Month of Photography, which happens every other year in March, is a citywide takeover with free photo shows, spotlighting both local and international artists.

Cool off in a fountain .

Denver's park system has ample splash pads to enjoy. And it's not just kids who cool off at them. You have until early October to get wet at the following spots: Central Park, City Park: H2O Odyssey, Cuatro Vientos Park, Bear Creek Park, Parkfield Park and Westwood Park

D.C. Burns Park , 4150 E. Shangri La Dr.

This 13-acre park was built to preserve the views of several wealthy Hilltop Residents. While it's a bit of a trick to get to, bordered between Colorado Blvd., Alameda Ave. and Leetsdale Dr., art lovers should journey to this underused park and admire sculptures from the 1968 Denver Sculpture Symposium and other abstract works that have been installed since.

Denver Public Library , locations vary.

Denver Public Library boasts 27 locations. Each has its own unique offerings, from maker spaces, exhibits and public events to a limited number of computers, museum and culture passes and of course books. If you ever feel like staying at home, the library has you covered there too, with e-books, movies and even a phone-a-story program. If you're wanting to start a business, librarians will offer you a free consultation for that, too. That's not just a free thing to do. Maybe you can make some money!

Denver International Airport , 8500 Peña Blvd.

Sorry to say, there are no free flights from DIA -- at least, not that we know about. But that doesn't mean you can't have a good, free time at the airport. The DIA Plaza offers various events throughout the year, from mini golf and ice skating to concerts and exhibits by local artists. Public art -- including the menacing Blucifer -- abounds.

places to visit in denver for free

Dikeou Collection , 1615 California St. # 515.

Since the late '90s, siblings Devon and Pany Dikeou have been running an impressive -- and free -- modern art collection, showcasing works by over 30 international artists. The space often hosts free events. If you're interested in seeing what private collectors can do, when they make their works available to the public, look no further.

Denver is rich with disc golf courses. Parks and Rec offers two disc golf courses at 42nd & Libson Park and Paco Sanchez Park. Head up to Arvada to the Johnny Roberts Disc Golf Course , named after one of the game's greats, and putt your day away. UDisc offers a sizeable list of courses in the area, if you tire of the ones mentioned above. (Not-so-pro tip: If you're as bad at the sport as we are, make sure to yell "four" before you accidently beam someone.)

Downtown Skate Park , 2205 19th St.

If you have access to a skateboard, roller blades or a BMX, head over to the Downtown Denver Skate Park, where 60,000 square feet of concrete bowls, pools and obstacles await you. Even if you don't, you can hang out at the park and watch Denver's best skaters do their thing. It's gnarley!

Dumpster dive

We hear there's no better way to understand a city than through its dumpsters. Now, we can't recommend that you hop into trash cans. It's kinda gross, smelly and occasionally you bump into a dead rodent. But we promise you, people of all ages have been scoring incredible furniture, art and food by digging around alleys and industrial dumpsters. And we've been told that once a month, every neighborhood has a large-item pickup day , where people get rid of furniture, art and all sorts of things. Figure out when that's happening, and the world is yours for the taking.

Fairmount Cemetery , 430 S. Quebec St.

Understanding life in a city sometimes involves appreciating death. Denver's second oldest cemetery, Fairmount Cemetery, was founded in 1890 and continues to operate today. There you can explore history at the gravesides of notable Denverites like famed madame Mattie Silks, former Mayor Robert Speer, Denver's first African American woman doctor Justina Ford and architect Temple Hoyne Buell.

Farmer's markets

If you're sick of doing your shopping at the grocery store or want to see handmade goods and produce local farmers are growing, head to a farmer's market. City Park, Union Station and Cherry Creek offer popular markets, but other neighborhoods boast them as well. And even if you don't want to buy food, you can sometimes try free samples and connect with others in the neighborhood.

Federal Boulevard cruising

Federal Boulevard is one of Denver's busiest streets and a treasure trove of Mexican and Vietnamese restaurants, hole-in-the-wall burger joints and shops. When so much of the city has been overrun with the new, Federal keeps tradition alive. On Sunday afternoons and evenings, there's a good chance you'll catch lowriders cruising up and down the Boulevard -- a longstanding tradition in the Chicano community. Just be careful walking on Federal. The city hasn't exactly made it pedestrian friendly.

Free festivals all year long

Denver has too many free festivals to name, but Visit Denver keeps a handy list of events around the metro area -- many of which are free or relatively inexpensive. Check it out to see what's coming up .

Five Points , at the intersection of Welton St., 23rd St., and E. 26th Ave., and Washington Ave. (and the surrounding neighborhood).

Denver's African American community called Five Points home for decades -- and some of that history has survived the rapid redevelopment of the neighborhood. Welton Street, in particular, housed a string of clubs, hotels and restaurants that earned the area the nickname "Harlem of the West." While the neighborhood has lived several lives since those days, it still demands a visit to peruse murals, historic signs and photographs. While you're there, walk to the Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library. Throughout the year, Welton Street, the main strip, is converted into festival grounds for events like the Five Points Jazz Festival and Juneteenth.

Foothills Art Center , 809 15th St. Golden

Fans of community-based art will enjoy perusing the gallery at the Foothills Arts Center, where a mix of gallery members, students, local university faculty and featured artists show off their work.

Golden Hill Cemetery , 12000 W. Colfax Ave.

For over 100 years old, the Golden Hill Cemetery, off West Colfax, has offered a window into the Orthodox Jewish community that once thrived on the westside, from the gold rush era to the tuberculosis crisis and into the '60s.

Golden Triangle Creative District

Construction is booming in the Golden Triangle Creative District. There, galleries, shops and restaurants line the streets and massive buildings are taking over ground-level parking lots. William Havu Gallery, Abend Gallery, Walker Fine Art and Gallery 1261 are all worth a visit.

Governor's Residence at Boettcher Mansion , 400 E. 8th Ave.

Throughout the year, History Colorado docents offer tours of Boettcher Mansion, the official home of the governor. Check out the splendor where Colorado's first families live, at least, when they choose to do so.

places to visit in denver for free

Download the App GPSMyCity for a variety of walking-tour itineraries. While there is a paid version of the app, take advantage of a free three-day trial and check out this guide to a variety of neighborhoods, historic homes, restaurants and breweries.

Greenway Off-Leash Dog Park , 2002 Spruce St.

If you've got a pooch and are looking for some fun, head to the Greenway Off-Leash Dog Park, which is not just a terrific place for dogs to socialize but for humans too.

Hammond's Candy Factory , 5735 Washington St.

The sweetest things in life are free. Nowhere is that truer than at Hammond's Candy Factory, which offers free tours of its facilities. For over 100 years, Hammonds has been making everything from candy canes to toffee, and you can see how it all comes together. Just remember: Filling cavities isn't free, so brush, brush, brush after you nosh, nosh, nosh.

High Line Canal Trail

The High Line Canal is a mostly paved 71 mile trail through neighborhoods, cemeteries, industrial areas, wide-open country and more. While some people use it for a quick stroll, the High Line Canal Trail can make for an epic day trip, too.

H Mart , 2751 S. Parker Rd., Aurora

Even if you don't have money to spend on food, H Mart, in Aurora, is a feast for the eyes. Peruse a variety of Asian food and housewares. The H in H Mart stands for "Han Ah Reum," which translates, in Korean, to "One Arm Full of Groceries," but the reality is, unless you keep money in your wallet, there's a good chance you could leave with a few arms full.

International Folk Dancing

Head to the Washington Park boathouse, every Thursday, from 7 to 10 p.m., to try out various forms of international folk dancing. You can go alone or with a partner. This event was founded 52 summers ago by Sukar Basanov, and is a tried and true way to have a great time.

La Raza Park , 1501 W. 38th Ave.

Journey to La Raza Park in the Sunnyside neighborhood for a round of hoops or to check out the mural, "El Viaje/The Journey," by David Ocelotl Garcia. This has been a significant park for Denver's Chicano community for decades and a frequent spot for community events.

Larimer Square , 1430 Larimer St.

Downtown Denver has seen a lot of redevelopment in recent years, and one of the places where this shines is Larimer Square. While shoppers and diners will find much to enjoy, this part of town also hosts frequent public events, including concerts featuring local bands through October.

places to visit in denver for free

Leaf peeping on Guanella Pass , Guanella Gateway Visitor's Center, 1491 Argentine St., Georgetown

Fall is the perfect time to check out Colorado's magnificent foliage. Drive up I-70 to Georgetown and climb Guanella Pass for stunning views of the aspen. While you're there, hike on the Mount Bierstadt or Square Top Lakes trails, of course, depending on the snow situation.

Levitt Pavilion , 1380 W. Florida Ave.

Music fans should look no further than Ruby Hill Park for one of the best free music series in the state. Levitt Pavilion offers over 50 free concerts a year, showcasing local musicians and artists spanning genres from around the world. Whether you're looking for a mariachi troupe, an indie-rock act, or a bluegrass band, there will be something for you.

Lookout Mountain Preserve and Nature Center , 910 Colorow Rd. Golden

Learn about foothills flora and fauna at the Lookout Mountain Nature Center, where naturalists lead free tours throughout the year. Hikers can walk the trails.

Marjorie Park , 6331 S. Fiddler's Green Circle, Greenwood Village

The Museum of Outdoor Arts has opened Marjorie Park, an impressive collection of sculptures and installations (including impressive Alice in Wonderland-themed works), next to Fiddler's Green Amphitheatre. For now, it's open for special events and by appointment only.

McGregor Square , 1901 Wazee St.

Rockies' owner Dick Monfort has made more than a few enemies among the hometown baseball team's diehard fans, who question whether he's really invested in backing a winning franchise. But one homerun Monfort can take credit for is McGregor Square, a massive development that took over a parking lot near Coors Field. There are shopping and dining options, but there is also a central plaza with a stadium-sized LED screen for watching the game -- and occasionally movies -- free of charge.

Morrison Road

Not too long ago, Denverite took a deep dive, er, drive down Morrison Road, learning about the culture, restaurants, activists and others who make this diagonal westside strip so captivating. There's public art to admire along with frequent community events. So read up and head over to learn more about the Westword neighborhood and this all too often forgotten part of town.

Mural Tours

Denver's street art scene has earned headlines in recent years. But long before RiNo became a muralist hub, the city's Chicano arts scene made waves in the '60s and '70s, memorializing indigenous and Mexican culture and ensuring their community was not erased in public space. Denverite put this handy guide of mural tours together to enjoy.

Mutiny Information Cafe , 2 S. Broadway

Browse used and new books, comics and records, play a game of pinball, snap a photo in the booth, or attend one of the many free or low-cost concerts or events that take place at Mutiny Information Cafe, a taste of the counterculture that once dominated -- and still thrives -- on South Broadway.

Night Lights Denver , 16th Street Mall

The Denver Theatre District has turned the Daniels and Fisher Tower, an old 16th Street Mall clocktower, into a massive vertical screen to project experimental art, photography and media works for free. Any given night you might find pieces by big-named international artists, prominent locals or even school kids.

One-off adventures

If you've done everything on this list or can't find what you're looking for here, Visit Denver maintains a calendar of free events to peruse. Get busy!

Paco Sanchez Park , 1290 Knox Court.

Hit the small skate park, cool off in the splash pads, zip down a slide or check out the nearby views of the mountains and downtown, while admiring one of Denver's most thoughtfully designed playgrounds and parks, a tribute to the city's first Spanish-language DJ, Paco Sanchez.

places to visit in denver for free

Park Hill Golf Course , 4141 E. 35th Ave.

The embattled Park Hill Golf Course has been shut down for a few years, as Westside, voters, the city and open space advocates wrangle over its future. Will it be one of Denver's largest parks? A mixed-use development? Or some combination of the two? One thing's certain: Nobody's playing golf there, and people are allowed to walk, jog and bike through the space, which offers fine views of the mountains and occasional community events.

Denver Parks and Recreation has built pickleball courts throughout town. Unfortunately, our city's Central Park Recreation Center made headlines after arresting our own Mayor of Pickleball , who graffitied a gym floor, thinking he was doing the city a favor. Generally, pickleball players don't get arrested; in fact, they have fun. While rec center pickleball courts cost money, there are outdoor courts at the following locations: Congress Park, Martin Luther King Park and Skyland Park.

Prevent an overdose

With so many free (and spendy) music and cultural events and endless parties, the city has a big drug scene. Part of that means people are sharing drugs and don't know the source. The Denver Department of Public Health recommends you test your drugs with their free fentanyl strips, to ensure you're not unwittingly consuming an opiate that's 50-times stronger than heroin. And whether you use drugs or not, get free doses of the opioid overdose drug Naloxone and learn to use them, in case you come across anyone overdosing in all your free adventures. For zero bucks, you can save a life.

Redline Contemporary Art Center , 2350 Arapahoe St.

The rotating exhibits at nonprofit Redline Contemporary Art Center offer Denverites a window into innovative art from around the city and world. The organization also sponsors free events around Five Points and beyond and showcases work by its many resident artists.

Red Rocks , 18300 W. Alameda Pkwy., Morrison.

Unfortunately, the days of free concerts at Red Rocks Amphitheatre are almost entirely over, but the venue is open to the public during daytime hours. Tour the museum, explore the Trading Post, and if you're fit (or bold), try running up and down the stairs. The views are incredible, the rocks are mysterious, and the surrounding trails are worth the hike. If you're up early, don't miss the sunrise.

RiNo Art District

Once upon a time, young punks biked up Brighton Boulevard to underground shows in industrial warehouses on the outskirts of Five Points. Over the past two decades, the area has radically transformed into a millennial paradise with trendy restaurants and shops that some New York transplants describe as "like Bushwick." The signature of this new neighborhood is the street art, which was painted, for years, during the now defunct Crush Walls Festival -- a tradition that has been continued by the RiNo Art District's mural fest.

RiNo ArtPark , 1900 35th St.

The RiNo Art District is best known for its restaurants, shopping and murals, murals, murals. But the ArtPark is a relatively new addition to the community, replete with affordable artist space (and often artists to meet), the Bob Ragland Library, massive swings, frequent free events and access to the South Platte River.

Riverside Cemetery , 5201 Brighton Blvd.

Over 67,000 late Denverites rest at Riverside Cemetery, the city's oldest operating cemetery founded in 1876. Those include: Augusta Tabor, John Evans, and many of the city's politicians, entrepreneurs and more. There is an official military cemetery with 1,000 veterans buried. The gravestones and mausoleums are haunting -- some art unto themselves -- all a stark contrast to the nearby industrial area.

Rockmount Ranch Wear , 1626 Wazee St.

Just ask touring musicians: No trip to Denver is complete without a stop at Rockmount Ranch Wear, one of the area's most distinctive clothiers, which produces throw-back western shirts. While many old timers bemoan that Denver is becoming an outpost of New York or San Francisco, a trip to Rockmount will remind you this city still has a strong Old West streak.

Rocky Mountain Arsenal Wildlife Refuge , 6550 Gateway Rd., Commerce City.

Ruby Hill slopes , 1200 W. Florida Ave.

For years, the hills at Ruby Hill Park have served as a hot spot for sledders. It's only open for a few months a year, but it's worth a trip for the scene and snow alike.

Sand Creek Regional Greenway

The 14-mile-long Sand Creek Trail cuts through Commerce City, Denver and Aurora, past industrial areas, through parks and past homes, fields and murals. It's a great spot for bikers, joggers and walkers to find a little respite from the city without going all the way to the mountains.

SCFD Free Days

The metro area's Scientific Cultural Facilities District penny-on-the-$10 tax has helped grow Denver's cultural scene. Best of all, all the organizations funded by the tax have to offer some free programming. SCFD keeps a calendar of when all the free days are at museums and other cultural institutions. Checking out free days is one of the best ways to sample the breadth of the city's cultural scene without breaking the bank.

South Broadway Stroll , South of 1st Ave. on Broadway.

Put on your sneakers and walk from 1st Avenue and East Alameda Avenue, down South Broadway, one of the last neighborhoods in Denver where counterculture still thrives and small businesses remain open. Act fast: The neighborhood is changing.

Surfing the South Platte , River Run Park, 2101 W Oxford Ave., Sheridan.

As far as we recall, the Beach Boys never mentioned surfing in Colorado. Well, guess what? It's happening! River surfing has taken off, and there are waves on the South Platte ready to ride for surfers of all different levels. But even mere mortals, who don't have wetsuits and boards, will still find watching people catch waves in a landlocked state weirdly mesmerizing.

Tattered Cover , locations vary

Denver's beloved Tattered Cover bookstore has been around -- and moved around -- for decades. Music lovers must stop by Twist and Shout Records, which offers a huge selection of CDs, records, books, geeky tchotchkes and more, but also, occasionally hosts concerts. And we're not talking small local acts. Touring bands like Mumford and Sons have also been known to play this Colfax mainstay.

Understudy , 890 C 14th St.

It's not every day that one of a city's most experimental underground art spaces are located in a city's convention center and funded by ads. But that's the case with Understudy, an arts space that has programmed some of the weirdest and wildest arts shows in town with creative people who don't quite fit the mold of the city's largest arts institutions but guarantee to offer something that will transform your mind.

Wax Trax , 638 E. 13th Ave.

Denver has some terrific record stores, but Wax Trax on 13th Avenue is one of our favorites. Not only does this shop have an impressive collection of discs to peruse, but they also offer delightfully scrappy sidewalk shows, where you can check out some of the best rising talent in town.

Denver's one of the few cities in the country that still boasts an alt-weekly. You're bound to find free and festive things to do, fascinating stories and occasionally blistering takes.

William F. Hayden Park , 1000 S. Rooney Rd., Lakewood

Mountain bikers, hikers and trail runners seeking spectacular views of Denver would do well to head out to Lakewood for a lug up Green Mountain. Pro tip (though we can't assure you this is entirely allowed...): If you go up after dark on the night of a Red Rocks concert, you can watch the light show from a distance, and it's pretty wild. If you're feeling like waking up early, check out the sunrise.

places to visit in denver for free

Denver is hip, with prices to match, but there are some great free attractions to enjoy © Boogich / Getty Images

Denver is on a rocket rise, and no wonder, with its revitalized downtown, outdoorsy ethos and alternative vibe attracting new arrivals from across the country. If you're looking for a laid-back city hub with a great climate and outdoor adventures right on the doorstop, look no further.

Be aware though that prices in Denver are climbing as fast as the daredevils propelling themselves up the sheer rock faces of the Front Range . The Colorado capital has evolved from cowtown to hipster hub, and it's easy to burn through your travel cash on even a fleeting visit, and not just on craft beer and designer puffer jackets...

But have no fear! Denver still has some real gems that don’t cost a thing – including street art, riverside parks and the world-famous Red Rocks concert venue, where you can channel your inner Denverite for free. Here's our guide to the best things to do on a visit to Denver on a budget.

1. Tour the Colorado State Capitol

With a gleaming gold leaf-covered dome that’s impossible to miss, the Colorado State Capitol is a must-see for history and architecture buffs. This handsome structure is home to the Governor’s office as well as the Senate and House of Representatives, and free 45-minute tours lead visitors through its hallowed halls, with guides sharing facts and fun tidbits about the building. The tour includes 15 minutes to wander within the dome – the view is worth joining the tour for all by itself.

Planning tip: If you're looking for a photo op, try the grand outer staircase, where the 13th step sits exactly one mile above sea level.

The 12 best day trips in the Rocky Mountains

2. Get close to a fortune on a US Mint Tour

The US Mint in Denver is the single largest producer of coins in the world – churning out about 7.5 billion coins a year – and free 45-minute guided tours of its facility run from Monday to Thursday. The experience is surprisingly engaging, as guides provide a detailed history of the mint and the manufacturing techniques behind the pennies in your pocket.

Planning tip: Tickets are usually released in the morning on the day of the tour at the premises, but you may be able to secure a ticket in advance using the request form on the website.

Union Station and Crawford Hotel during Winter Downtown Denver Colorado

3. Take a selfie at Union Station

Perhaps Denver's most iconic landmark, the historic Union Station serves as the city's main transportation hub, but there's more to see than the Amtrak, light rail and bus stops. Drop by for a break from downtown’s hubbub in the sumptuous central lounge, with its leather couches and deep chairs and free wi-fi and shuffleboard tables. Drinks and eats can be purchased at various swanky eateries, coffee shops and bars.

Planning tip: During the warmer summer months, the outdoor plaza by the station fills with children running through the pop-up fountain. Come on Saturdays for the farmers' market, which showcases local foods, flowers and finds.

Best time to visit Denver

4. Seek out the street art in RiNo

RiNo (River North) is one of Denver's hippest hoods, and the streets are adorned with all sorts of stop-you-in-your-tracks street art. A one-time industrial wasteland, RiNo is now the heart of cool Denver, with edgy galleries and boutiques, innovative eateries and plenty of craft breweries. Murals are everywhere – just stroll the streets and duck into alleys, doorways and parking lots to see what you can find.

Futuristic frontage of the Denver Art Museum

5. Experience cutting edge art at the Denver Art Museum

The crown jewel of Denver’s art scene, the Denver Art Museum (DAM) , houses an eclectic collection from the works of Old Master painters to the greats of modern contemporary art. The museum is also home to a stunningly rich collection of Native American art, one of the largest in the world.

Special exhibitions keep the museum buzzing year-round, and interactive art stations will keep kids engaged as they tour the exhibits. Entry for children under 18 is always free, while adults can enjoy free admission on selected days almost every month – check the website for the current schedule.

Planning tip: With kids in tow, nearby Civic Center Park is a great place to retreat after a gallery visit for a bite. Food trucks gather here on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from May to early October.

6. Get more art for free on Denver's First Fridays

A long-standing Denver tradition, First Friday sees Denverites head to the city’s art districts – Santa Fe, RiNo and Golden Triangle – on the first Friday of the month to wander through art galleries, private studios, and co-ops that keep their doors open late into the evenings. The event is free and lively, often including drinks, food trucks, live music and a general sense of revelry.

7. Rock out at Red Rocks Amphitheater

One of the most impressive music venues in the world, Red Rocks is a rock-framed outdoor theater nestled between towering red sandstone monoliths. The venue is renowned for its natural acoustics, and summer nights bring big-name musicians and shoulder-to-shoulder crowds at ticketed events. However, it’s free to visit during the day, and well worth the 15-mile trip out from downtown Denver. Explore the amphitheater, climb the 250 stairs to the top, check out the views, then hit the many miles of trails that wind through the red rock formations.

8. Tap a toe to City Park Jazz

Who doesn’t love a free concert? Every summer since 1986, City Park Jazz has staged jazz concerts on Lake Ferril in City Park, just east of downtown. Held on Sundays from 6pm to 8pm, the concerts feature well-known bands playing everything from traditional jazz and blues to R&B and salsa. The program attracts around 10,000 concert-goers each week, and many locals bring along picnic blankets and lawn chairs and dance in front of the bandstand.

Planning tip: To make the most of the concerts, bring your own food and drinks and come early to stake out a good spot.

9. Go behind the scenes of the candy business at Hammond's Candy Factory

Sweet tooths will love this free tour that takes you behind the scenes at Hammond's Candy , an old-school candy maker that has been pumping out lollipops, ribbon candy and candy canes since 1920. Having largely avoided the automation processes other candy manufacturers have adopted, Hammond's specializes in handmade confectionery products – many of the machines here date from the late 1800s and early 1900s and you can watch workers stretch, cut and fold sugary treats on the factory floor.

Colorado Bison

10. Meet a bison at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal Wildlife Refuge

Located on the outskirts of Denver, the 17,000-acre Rocky Mountain Arsenal Wildlife Refuge is one of the largest urban refuges in the country. Formerly home to a US Army chemical weapons production facility, this green space is now home to some 330 species of wildlife, including bison and bald eagles, and it's free to visit.

For walkers, 10 miles of hiking trails cross wetlands, woodlands and grasslands. Two lakes are popular weekend fishing spots, or you can take an 11-mile self-guided driving tour. Drop by the Visitor Center to pick up a map and check out its well-curated exhibit hall and hands-on "Discovery Room" for kids. Free guided tours of the refuge are offered too.

Planning tip: While the reserve includes walking and cycling trails, the bison area is only open to drivers, so bring wheels if you want to view the Arsenal's biggest inhabitants.

11. Take a turn around the Great Divide Brewing Company

In a town known for its craft breweries, Great Divide Brewing Company is a powerhouse. Its exquisitely bold and balanced brews are among the country’s most celebrated, claiming 18 Great American Beer Festival medals. Family-friendly free tours of its downtown brewhouse are offered daily, on a first-come, first served basis (for visitors aged 12 and over only). It's a worthwhile stop for a behind-the-scenes peek at how its magic sauces are made.

Visitors enjoy the views of Confluence Park in the heart of Denver, Colorado

12. Catch your breath in Confluence Park

With verdant fields, dramatic skyscraper views and two colliding waterways – Cherry Creek and the South Platte River – Confluence Park is where Denver’s urbanites come to recharge. This is the place to picnic, jog, play Frisbee, and feel like a part of everyday Denver life. There's a small, shallow riverside beach where families splash in the South Platte during the summer months, and a short white-water section invites tubers and kayakers.

Planning tip: Confluence Kayak and Ski is one of several local centers renting out kayaks, inner tubes and stand-up paddleboards.

13. Go behind the scenes a the Meier Ski Factory

Head over to Meier Ski Factory anytime they are open and you can take a seat at their bar overlooking the factory floor. The bartender will talk you through the process of ski making while you enjoy a local craft beer. Meier is a locally-owned ski manufacturer that creates custom as well as ready-to-slide wooden skis from locally sourced materials. These eco-conscious crafters make forest management and using Colorado wood a top priority and the results are pretty amazing.

Denver Confluence Park Hot Summer Day

The Best Free Things To Do by Denver

November 6, 2022 By //  by  Shawn Reeser

If you’re looking for free ways to explore Denver, look no further than these complimentary tourist attractions. Your wallet will love it. As the saying goes, the best things in life are free.

The Centennial State loves to entertain. There are so many incredible activities easily accessed from the Mile High City that it can be tough to keep track of them all.

On top of that, the tourist-friendly city of The Springs is only an hour and a half drive south on I-25 (traffic/weather/construction pending), so it’s completely doable for a memorable day trip from Denver. We’ve compiled a list of our favorite free activities in Colorado Springs , to complement your completely complimentary vacation itinerary.

Lake Ladora Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge Trees Sunrise Denver

Most of these free Denver activities are available year-round, except for a few, such as hiking a high snow-capped peak. Many are located within walking of Downtown Denver , or by using affordable public transportation .

While some of these bucket-list attractions are in the suburbs, others are within a day’s roundtrip drive from Denver . So prep for an adventure and get ready for some Mile High fun.

Here are some free attractions in Denver, CO , in no particular order:

Check out the Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Red Rocks Amphitheatre Summer Day Joggers Morrison Colorado

With its sweeping views of Denver and its reputation of being one of the best concert venues in the world, the Red Rocks Amphitheatre is a true wonder of Mother Nature. Formed by two sandstone monoliths –Ship Rock and Creation Rock – the amphitheater has welcomed some of the world’s biggest rock stars to its stage.

The best part is that when there isn’t a concert on, it’s completely free to explore. Get up on the stage that’s been graced by the likes of U2, The Blues Brothers, The Beatles, and Bruce Springsteen and embrace your inner rockstar, or simply admire the phenomenon that is the completely naturally formed acoustically perfect amphitheater.

You’ll often find people around the amphitheater participating in yoga classes or hiking, or jogging up and down. There are a number of stairs you’ll probably need to climb to access the Red Rocks stage, but we think it’s worth it for the stunning views.

Colorado Music Hall of Fame

Colorado Music Hall of Fame John Denver Red Rocks Morrison

While you’re checking out Red Rocks, it would be remiss to not visit the nearby Colorado Music Hall of Fame . Nestled in the Red Rocks Amphitheater Visitor Centre, the CMHOF educates visitors on the incredible musicians that have helped shape Denver’s music scene. Exhibitions include memorabilia, rock’n’roll history, photos, videos and interactive displays.

Entry is free (although donations are welcome) and the museum is open every day (except Thanksgiving and Christmas) between 9am and 4pm on regular days, and 9am and 7pm when there is a show on.

Indulge your sweet tooth in Hammond’s Candy Factory

Hammond's Candies Gift Shop Candy

Free candy? Yes, please! A Denver institute since 1920, Hammond’s Candy Factory offers free tours where visitors can go behind the scenes to see exactly how lollipops, candy canes, and other classic Hammond’s Candies are pulled and stretched into the treats we’ve come to love.

And the best part – there are free candy samples as part of the tour. Hammond’s runs these tours every half an hour during business hours, and they last for about thirty minutes.

Enjoy some music at the City Park Summer Jazz series

Denver City Park Summer Jazz Series

Warm summer evenings, the sounds of jazz wafting through the air; if you’re looking for the perfect Sunday night activity that is budget-friendly, then check out the City Park Summer Jazz series – the concert is free! Running from late June through to early August, the concerts kick off at 6 pm each Sunday night.

Pack a picnic rug and a basket of goodies, or purchase some food from the food trucks on-site (there’s a great selection, from pizza and ice cream to Indian and Thai food). Or simply come along and enjoy the music, free of charge.

Taste the Rockies at Coors Brewery

Coors Brewery Tour Cooper Brew Kettles Golden

While Denver might be famous for its craft beer scene, a trip to the world’s largest brewing site, Coors Brewery , is unmissable – especially when a behind-the-scenes tour costs you zilch. Learn about the brewing process and the history of the company, which has been making beer since 1873 when Adolph Coors discovered the pure spring water in the mountains.

The best part? The tour ends with free beer samples for those of legal drinking age. Bonus! Stay for as long as you want, there’s a gift shop to check out too. Only one free tour is permitted per person per day.

Visit the Botanic Gardens on a Comp Day

Denver Botanic Gardens Lily Pad Flower

While there’s usually an admission fee to visit Denver’s impressive Botanic Gardens, there are actually a number of days where entry is free , thanks to a joint effort with the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District.

Both York Street and Chatfield Farm have free entry days throughout the year, so check out the Botanic Garden website to see which dates you can enjoy the gardens for free.

Brush up on your coin history at the Denver Mint

United States Mint Denver Colorado Entry Gate

Perhaps somewhat ironically, a visit to the Denver US Mint to see where money is made won’t cost you a dime. Free 45-minute tours are offered to see how money is created and gives you an insight into the history of US coins.

The Denver US Mint is only one of two mints still operating in the United States, and tours are available between Monday and Thursday. Note: while it’s a free tour, tickets are still required and can be obtained from the Tour Information center from 7 am on the day you wish to take the tour.

Admire the street art of the Santa Fe Arts District

Santa Fe Art District Museo De Las Americas

‘Art for All’ is the district’s slogan, and the area features galleries, cultural events, and exhibitions showcasing hundreds of artists. But while many of the art features are behind the closed doors of ticketed galleries, there’s plenty of street art in the district that you can admire, completely free of charge.

Speaking of free art, there’s also the ‘First Friday Art Walk’ , a free shuttle gallery tour every first Friday of the month at 5:30 pm, stopping off at different galleries that open their doors and welcome visitors as part of the tour.

Walk the Cherry Creek Trail

Cherry Creek Trail Denver Colorado

While Denver is home to some impressive national parks and nearby mountains for hiking, one of the best walks to enjoy is right in town. The 42-mile track starts in downtown Denver and winds its way through urban areas, the middle of town, by prairie grasslands, and finishes up at Franktown , meandering alongside Cherry Creek.

You can jog, cycle, run, or simply stroll any section of the path and enjoy the changing sights and terrain along the way. In the middle, it passes Cherry Creek Reservoir . Cherry Creek joins with the South Platte River at Denver’s Confluence Park in LoDo. It’s a popular summer park to beat the heat with kayaking or tubing.

Window shop on the 16th Street Mall

16th Street Mall Denver Colorado Night

The most interesting thing about this mall isn’t even the shops; it’s the fact that the pedestrian strip, a pattern of red, grey, and white granite, looks like a diamond rattlesnake from above. Captivating design aside, 16th Street Mall is a great place to people-watch, especially after dark when the twinkling fairy lights turn on and make the trees lining the street sparkle

Horse-drawn carriages carry people up and down the promenade. Only city buses and cop cars are found driving down 16th Street. You can also check out the D&F tower, an almost replica of the Campanile of St. Mark’s in Venice for a touch of Italy right here in Denver.

There’s also a free shuttle bus, called the MallRide , which travels up and down 16th Street Mall, making it easy to explore.

Say hello to bison at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal Wildlife Refuge

Bison Sunrise Rocky Mountain Arsenal Wildlife Refuge Denver

You don’t have to venture all the way out into the wilderness to see some wildlife in Colorado; just downtown of the city lies the Rocky Mountain Arsenal Wildlife Refuge , a 15,000-acre wildlife sanctuary where you can spot white-tailed deer, bison, owls, bald eagles, prairie dogs, and hawks not to mention brilliant sunsets.

The refuge is open every day from sunrise to sunset, and during the summer months, there is an abundance of wildlife to amazing at, from white pelicans in the skies and burrowing owls nesting in empty prairie dog burrows to frogs, painted turtles and fish in the wetlands, while the grasslands become awash with wildflowers.

Tea time at Celestial Seasonings

Celestial Seasonings Tea Factory Art Boulder

If you love your tea, then a trip to nearby Boulder should be on your itinerary for a free tour of the renowned tea company Celestial Seasonings .

Learn everything about the process of creating tea, from the raw ingredients used to how the product is packaged and shipped, on the free 45-minute tour through the factory. Not only is the tour free, but complimentary samples of the delicious teas are offered throughout as well, so it’s a win-win.

Hike a 14er

Mount Bierstadt Georgetown Colorado Summer

Colorado is famous for many things; music, beer, and of course, hiking, so climbing up a 14er is a must-do activity for those who love the outdoors. What’s a 14er? That’s Colorado lingo for a peak that rises up more than 14,000 feet above sea level, and Colorado is home to 58 of them (although, this number is somewhat debated!).

While not in Denver itself, Mt Bierstadt is considered a great 14er for first-timers as it’s so close to the city. So if you’re in town, have a reasonable level of fitness, and are well-equipped for a challenging but not technical hike, enjoy the free workout of climbing up a 14er. And feel the pride and sense of accomplishment that comes with it!

Chase waterfalls at Hanging Lake

places to visit in denver for free

Last, but not least, is an activity that’s not near Denver, but nonetheless it’s free and often day-tripped by Denverites. While there are plenty of close hiking trails in and around the metro, this iconic natural landmark is a tourist favorite, therefore it’s worth the long drive.

It’s 2.5 hours from Denver, so pack a lunch. Picture a gently cascading waterfall spilling into crystal-clear turquoise waters, surrounded by the natural beauty atop the cliffs of Glenwood Canyon; welcome to Hanging Lake .

The 3.2-mile return hike up to the top of the cliffs is steep and challenging, but rewards those who embark on it with stunning views of the rare travertine lake; mineral deposits from the limestone dissolve to create unusual travertine layers, making Hanging Lake a special lake indeed.

Thanks for checking out our list of the best free tourist activities in the Mile High City. Every free activity you do is a paid activity earned, or something like that.

8 Fantastic, Free Things To Do In Denver

You don't have to burn a hole in your pocket to enjoy the city.

Jessica Ramos

What a year it’s been. We’ve come to the realization that wow, everything costs so much, we wanted to give our readers something they could do that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg (in fact, most of these should be free and if not free, incredibly cheap). Without further ado, here’s 8 fantastic and free things to do in Denver all-year round.

1. Take a tour of the iconic Colorado State Capitol

View this post on Instagram

Take a tour of the capitol if you’d like, as it’s free, informative, and a great way to get in your steps. Tours take about an hour and include a trip to the dome observation area, which is a 99 step climb above the 3rd floor and is accessible by stairs only, but worth it. Tours can be booked at their website.

2. Take your family to Bubble Planet!

Bubble Planet in Denver

Bubble Planet is coming to Denver on May 18 with 11 themed rooms filled with every kind of bubble imaginable —and if you have kids under 4, they get in completely free! Grab tickets here!

3. Hike a 14-er

With over 58 hikes that over 14,000 feet above sea level or higher, there’s plenty of these hikes to take on. A 14-er, a slang used in Denver that references the feet, can be found only a 30 minute drive from the city in nearby places like Red Rocks Park, Deer Creek Canyon Park, or Mt. Bierstadt which is a bit further at an hour and 15 but is one of the best beginner friendly hikes.

4. Walk across the city on Cherry Creek Trail

This 40 mile trail spans across one end of the city to another, starting at one end in Downtown to Franktown in Douglas County. Pass through Confluence park and through Cherry Creek Reservoir by foot or bike and take in the sights and sounds of the city and its surrounding nature.

5. Visit the museum at the Red Rocks Park & Amphitheatre

Although one of the main events is to watch a concert at this unique, acoustic natural theater, you can also take a free tour of their museum to learn all about the history. There’s also a really cool Performers Hall of Fame to see every iconic group that’s performed at this famed venue. What’s better, there’s a ton of hiking trails nearby, as the venue is situated in the Eastern Slope of the Rockies, perfect for exploring.

6. Have a picnic in the park

Gather your favorite beers to-go from your favorite breweries, some sandwich ingredients, and then head to City Park for a waterfront picnic. Or head to the grassy, quiet Cheesman Park with views of the Pavillion built in 1910.

7. Take advantage of a free day at the Denver Art Museum

While these days are a more likely to be packed, this is still a great way to spend an afternoon. Here’s a list of the rest of the free days coming up. They recommend that you make ticket reservations in advance.

  • Saturday, September 7

Open first as actual gardens as well as a zoological park in 1890, the long-running Elitch Gardens now boasts a theme park, a water park, entertainment and more. At the theme park, fly 17 stories above Denver on the Star Flyer swing ride, or dive and spin at 50 mph speeds on the Mind Eraser coaster. If thrills aren't your thing, you'll find plenty of more relaxing rides and activities in both the theme and water park, such as the Commotion Ocean wave pool and Castaway Creek lazy river.

Even if you hate the sound of excess change rattling around your pockets, you'll find a tour of the Denver branch of the United States Mint to be an interesting way to spend an hour or so. Having opened in 1863, its purpose was to transform the Gold Rush's findings into coinage. Today, the U.S. Mint in Denver can produce up to 50 million coins a day.

A free guided tour of the U.S. Mint in Denver will allow you the opportunity to learn more about each stage of coin production, from the design and sculpting of each piece to the cutting of each type of coin. Some recent visitors marveled at the coin-making machines, but say that not all travelers will likely find it enthralling.

Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum

Housed in a hangar on the former Lowry Air Force Base in eastern Denver, this museum has more than 100,000 square feet of exhibit space that explores the history of the base's role in World War II, the Korean and Vietnam wars and the Cold War. A variety of iconic aircraft, space vehicles, artifacts and military uniforms are on display. The collection includes bombers from World War II, reconnaissance aircraft and commercial planes. One of the most iconic symbols of the Vietnam War – the Bell UH-1M Iroquois “Huey” – is among the displays.

Past visitors enjoyed seeing the variety of aircraft and especially the replicas of “Star Wars” spacecraft. About 20 miles south of the museum is its sister location, the Exploration of Flight, which offers visitors a more immersive experience. They include a pilot simulator and actual flights in vintage and modern aircraft. The 15-acre site is located at Centennial Field, about 20 miles south of downtown Denver.
