Explore Balakot With Us

Balakot is a town in the Mansehra Area within the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa area of Pakistan. The city was devastated amid the 2005 Kashmir seismic tremor. Still, it was revamped with the help of the Government of Pakistan and Saudi Open Help for Pakistan Seismic Tremor Casualties (SPAPEV), a Saudi help association. Balakot also serves as a hub for visitors going to Northern Areas.

Balakot is found on the right bank of the Kunhar Stream . It is nearly two-thirds of the waterway length from its beginning at Lake Dharam Sar profound within the Kaghan Valley; sometime recently, it converted with Jehlum River. The lower zone underneath Balakot, alluded to as Nainsukh Valley, is calm. Kaghan Valley above Balakot City is cold enough to turn the entire region solidifying within the winter. 1. Saif ul Malook Lake

Do not purchase honey:.

They sell a different kind of Honey from what you have been using. You’ll find that many Honey Sellers will attempt to sell it to you. Many of them mix a large quantity of sugar liquid with other ingredients, including a small amount of Honey they produce on their low-quality farm by feeding sugar to bees.

Never purchase Clothing Items:

Why would you buy items that you can easily find in your city? You can easily find all the clothing items you see there throughout the country from Lahore and Faisalabad. Hence, avoiding increasing your luggage by buying more expensive items is better. On such a journey, you should purchase local items made specifically in that region, such as handicrafts.

Do not go without sufficient cash:

There are a few ATMs in Naran. The only ATM in town is usually cashless most of the time. As a result, it is recommended that you have sufficient cash with you while visiting Naran.

Do not eat much:

There is no other explanation than common sense. Only consume a little food when climbing medium-sized mountains, walking on Naran, or at Saif ul Malook. Eating light snacks an hour before your next zigzag destination is best.

Balakot (Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa)

Balakot is the most important town in the Mansehra district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and is located on the banks of the Kunhar River. The Kunhar River flows in a very clam channel after Balakot instead of narrow and sharp gorges in the Kaghan Valley. Balakot is the gateway of Kaghan Valley, a lush green valley, which is a connection point between Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan.

About Mansehra

Mansehra is located at the distance of 221 km from Peshawar on Karakoram Highwary N-35. It is very important location as a gateway to Gilgit-Baltistan through Karakoram Highway or through Babusar Pass in the Kaghan Valley. It has very pleasant weather due to surrounding valleys such as Kaghan and Kashmir.

Mansehra is also a historical city in past dynasties in this area, Ashoka ruled over this area, who was the main ruler in Maurya Dynasty. The city is founded by Mahan Singh Mirpuri, who was the governor during the rule of Ranjit Singh. During the British rule, the town is named in the honour of Mahan Singh Mirpuri.

Due to influence of Hindu in the past, several hindu festivals are held here. The festival of Durgashtami, who was a Hindu Devi, is celebrated by Brahman of Mansehra on ancient site of Bareri Hill in Mansehra. There is also a giant rock at the base of Bareri Hill inscribed with the Edicts of Ashoka.

Mansehra is famous for its lush green valleys, plateaus and number of beautiful lakes. The Kunhar River is one of the main river in the district, flowing from the Kaghan Valley and then finally merges with the Jehlum River. It is the gateway to the Kaghan Valley and the Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir. The Siran is another river in Mansehra, comes from the Musa Da Masalla and ends in the Tarbella Lake.

Mansehra is located on the Karakorum Highway that leads toward the mighty mountian range of Karakorum and Himalayas in the Gilgit-Baltistan. It has boundaries with Abbottabad, Battagram, Kohistan, Torgar, Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, and Diamer districts.

Balakot is situated on the right bank of the Kunhar River which confluence with the Jehlum River. It is the main point to travel toward the Kaghan Valley and the Gilgit-Baltistan. Due to the Kaghan Valley pleasant atmosphere, whole Balakot town become pleasant in the summer season, whereas it becomes cold in the winter season.

The Kaghan Valley is the most visiting location in the Mansehra district at a distance of 38 km from the Mansehra city. It is an alpine forest valley covered by the Lower Himalayan mountain range. There are number of lush green pastures, alpine meadows, waterfalls, frosty streams, and beautiful crystal clear water lakes. Lake Saif-ul-Malook, Ansoo Lake, and Lulusar Lake are the most attractive lakes in the Kaghan Valley.

Babusar Top is the highest location in the Kaghan Valley at an elevation of 13,690 feet. The magnificent view of Nanga Parbat can be observed from the top in the clear weather. In the winter season, it is not possible to cross Babusar Top due to heavy snowfall.

Shogran is an attractive hill station in the Kaghan Valley at an elevation of 7,749 feet above sea level. It remains open in summers and winters and always has a fantastic weather and moving clouds around the hill station. In monsoon period, a heavy rains is expected most of time. Hail storms are also much common there. So in monsoon period, tourists have to be careful. Shogran can be accessed from the Kiwai town on the main Mansehra - Kaghan Road. Payee Lake is located in the Shogran and is accessible through a jeep.

Lalazar is located in the Upper Kaghan Valley at an elevation of 10,246 feet above sea level. It contains vast meadows and green pastures within the lush green pine forests.

Malika Parbat is the highest peak in the Kaghan Valley at an elevation of 17,360 feet at a distance of 6 km from the Lake Saif-ul-Maluk. It is clearly seen from the Lake Saif-ul-Maluk in clear weather. It was first scaled by Captain B.W. Battye in 1920. Its summits are difficult to ascent, so only twelve climbers have reached on the top of Malika Parbat.

Musa Ka Musalla is a beautiful peak at an elevation of 13,500 feet between Siran Valley and Kaghan Valley. To access the base camp of this peak, one have take route via Mandagucha village along the Siran River from Shinkiari town. Mandagucha is high mountain village with pleasant and cool climate. The Siran Lake is also located near the Dabar Town while traveling toward Mandagucha village. From this village, the trek leads toward the base camp of the Musa Ka Musalla Peak. Siran Valley and Shinkiari are also important due to tea cultivation in Pakistan. A beautiful waterfall, also known as Manda Gucha Waterfall, is also good place to visit.

Shogran Valley And Siri Paye Meadows: All You Need To Know

Have you been thinking of a short getaway to the mountains to cool down and recharge your batteries in nature? Why not skip all the overcrowded tourist hotspots in northern Pakistan and spend a weekend in Shogran Valley and explore Siri Paye instead!

Shogran has everything you need for short trip to the mountains: cool weather, wide green meadows, epic mountain views, and relaxing pine forests. It’s like Naran , but less crowded, and Siri Paye is similar to Fairy Meadows , but doesn’t require as much physical fitness.

I visited Shogran back in May 2021 with a bunch of friends from Lahore. They had a guest from Iran at the time who desperately wanted to see the northern areas of Pakistan before going back home. However, time was short and flights to Gilgit or Skardu were too expensive, so my friends decided to take her somewhere closer to home. They got off from work Friday evening, picked me up in Islamabad at midnight, we spent a fun weekend in Shogran and Siri Paye, and made it back to Lahore on Monday before dawn.

Where Is Shogran?

Shogran is a mountain resort of 2,362 meters altitude in the Kaghan Valley of Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. It’s located just over 200 kilometers from Islamabad between Balakot and Naran, making it an excellent destination for a short getaway. The valley is the gateway to the beautiful Siri Paye Meadows, which cover the hilly peaks of Kaghan like a soft blanket at an altitude of 2,895 meters.

Weather In Shogran

The weather in Shogran is relatively mild in summer and cold and snowy in winter. The best time to visit Shogran and Siri Paye is in summer (June – August), when daytime temperatures range around comfortable 20°C. Expect both sunny and rainy weather, which gives Siri Paye Meadows its vibrant green color, and don’t forget to pack a blanket because it tends to get quite chilly at night.

It’s also possible to visit Shogran in winter to witness a snowy landscape, but facilities may be limited and it will get very cold. Don’t expect running water and heating, travel at your own risk.

Make sure to check the road conditions before your trip and look out for landslides.

How To Get To Shogran

The best way to get to Shogran independently is by private vehicle. To reach Shogran from Islamabad, you must drive about four hours north to Kiwai, then transfer to a jeep and ride for around half an hour. You’ll have to go back down on the same jeep. To travel from Lahore to Shogran, the drive is about eight hours. You may drive your own vehicle or hire a driver with a car.

Plenty of tour companies also offer group tours to Shogran and Siri Paye from Lahore, Islamabad, and Karachi, or can plan an individualized tour for you.

You can also travel to Balakot by bus from Islamabad and organize private transportation there, but it’s a hassle and more time-consuming.

Pro tip: There’s a restaurant in Kiwai where you can dine in the middle of a small waterfall! It’s a great place to have breakfast before heading up to Shogran.

Hotels In Shogran

The best hotels in Shogran include the Pine Park Hotel, where my friends and I rented a cottages for a night, as well as the Cedarwood and the Arcadian Shogran. You may inquire about tents to camp in Siri Paye as well.

Of course, you could spend the whole day sitting outside of your Shogran hotel and sipping chai, but why miss out when there are so many things to do in Shogran?

Trek from Shogran to Siri Paye

Siri Paye Meadows is without a doubt the top attraction in Shogran. The average person can reach these lush green meadows on foot in 3-4 hours. It’s a fairly easy trek, but you should make sure to leave early enough to make it back before it gets dark.

Take a bumpy jeep ride

Alternatively, you can get from Shogran to Siri Paye by jeep. The ride takes about one hour on the mountain road, which gives you more time to appreciate the bumpy experience. It’s best to hire the same jeep that took you from Kiwai to Shogran.

Sit on the iconic swing in Siri Paye

One of the most iconic spots in Siri Paye is a swing hanging over the hill that you’ll see as soon as you reach the top. With such views, you’re guaranteed to have the best swing ride of your life.

Take a Horse ride in nature

There’s no better way to roam the lush green meadows than on horseback. Hire a horse for a small fee and enjoy.

Relax by the Siri Paye Lake

There’s also a blue lake in Siri Paye that guarantees beautiful views and relaxing times.

Camp in the meadows

Instead of staying at a hotel or cottage in Shogran, you can spend the night under the star sky in Siri Paye. It’s best to arrange a tent beforehand.

Go for short hikes around Shogran

You don’t have to hike all the way to Siri Paye to embrace Shogran’s outdoors. You can also enjoy short hikes around Shogran to viewpoints and small waterfalls. Your hotel staff will guide you best.

Spend a night by the bonfire

And lastly, what’s a trip to northern areas without a night by the bonfire? Bonfires are not only the best way to warm yourself up in cold nights but they also guarantee fun times. Your hotel staff can arrange bonfires for you for around 5,000-6,000 PKR, so this option is better if you’re traveling with a larger group.

My friends and I traveled independently by car. We split up the costs of car fuel, food, jeep, and mountain hut among the four of us and the cost was 16,000 PKR per person.

For a more budget-friendly trip, consider camping instead of renting a hut, traveling by public transportation, or joining a group tour.

If you don’t have a car, it might be worth hiring a driver. In this case, you should pay for fuel costs and meals/lodging for the driver, as well as a fair daily wage.

Is Shogran Valley Safe?

But, is it safe to visit Shogran? Let’s take a look!

• Road safety: The roads around Shogran are nothing out of the ordinary, but still, you should check the weather conditions beforehand and make sure to find a reliable driver. After all, the roads of northern Pakistan can be quite scary .
• Health: Altitude sickness is rare in Shogran but it can be a little tough to hike at higher altitudes. Don’t be too harsh on yourself and avoid hiking at night. Also, before of unfiltered water, even if it comes from natural springs.
• Female safety: As everywhere in Pakistan, especially in holiday destinations, women must be very cautious when venturing out alone. That being said, solo female travel in Shogran isn’t impossible, but it’s generally not recommend. Read more about female safety in Pakistan here.

Lahore to Shogran is about an eight-hour journey. You can either choose to drive yourself or hire a chauffeur.

Even though it is more complex and time-consuming, you can arrange private transportation in Balakot after reaching there via bus from Islamabad.

Hot Tip : There’s a restaurant in Kiwai where you can eat while encircled by a little cascade! It’s a great idea to eat breakfast there before climbing to Shogran.

Siri Paye – The Gem of Shogran

Siri Paye Meadows is a top destination to visit when traveling to Shogran. It is elevated at 10,500 feet and picturesquely framed by the clouds. This 6 km journey up the treacherous, thrilling, jaw-dropping hairpin turns an adventure in and of itself that you won’t soon forget. If you are fit enough, you might forgo the jeeps and stroll the extravagantly lush pine forest track for 2 to 3 hours instead.

The Siri Ridge, with its charming tiny lake and decaying forest department hut, whose porch you can sit in, can be reached after a 45-minute jeep trip.

Once you arrive in Paye, take strolls across the meadows, enjoy a picnic lunch, and take your time taking the breathtaking views. On most days, rain comes quickly and heavily in the late afternoon or early evening and can alter rapidly near the top of the mountain.

Makra Peak is heightened at 12,746 feet or 3,885 meters. Although it is a more difficult task, it is also conceivable and frequently successful to climb through knee-deep snow in the spring or fall. It is highly encouraged for climbers to schedule their journey to return to Paye before dusk. Dana Shinkiari is a historic forest hut on the Shinkiari Plateau at around a 2 to 2.5 hours hike. Though most tourists to the Kaghan Valley never see it, this is another one of its hidden gems so the effort will be well worth it. The pine-covered plateau is located at around 8,350 feet (2,545 meters), and the views are once more breathtaking.

Khanian 

Khanian is a beautiful tourist destination to visit while you are at Shogran. The tourists like staying in Khanian for at least a few nights and exploring the many excursion choices. Experience the jarring and jaw-dropping jeep ride from Shogran to Siri Paye. The mountain route takes roughly an hour, giving you more time in the valley and mountains. Large rocks and erratic dents mark the entire route. On the way up, you will undoubtedly tremble. Since only jeeps can transport you to the summit, you must pay for the ride tickets. The same jeep will be responsible for bringing you back.

Instead of staying in a hotel in Shogran, you can spend a romantic night under the stars with your other half. It’s best to establish a camp beforehand. As camping is a favorite activity done by tourists, the hotels in Shogran provide the facility.

Despite the crowd in Shogran, your hotel provides the amenity of a car parking area. In the snowy weather,  your hotel staff helps you get the car out if it gets stuck due to snow patches.

Transportation

Suppose you are not willing to travel by private car. In that case, the facility of bus services like Daewoo and Faisal Movers is also available for easy access. The local jeep drivers are waiting for the tourists to take them to the spots up higher. Traveling in northern areas has not remained a problem now.

Restaurants

In tourist destinations like Shogran, Naran Kaghan Valley , Skardu, and many others, posh and top-notch restaurants have been opened. Different diversified cuisines are available. The quality of food they provide is fresh and fabulous.

How Much is The Distance to Reach Shogran from Islamabad?

The distance between Islamabad and Shogran is around 228 kilometers through Hazara Motorway. It requires nearly 4 hours for the trip from Islamabad and about 8 hours from Lahore. After stopping at Kiwai to reserve a jeep, you’ll have to travel for 30 minutes to reach Shogran.

What is The Average Cost of Living in Shogran?

There are numerous vacation packages available, but they differ according to the days and the number of locations you want to see all at once. Visits to adjacent locations from Islamabad to Shogran will run you about 40,000 PKR.

How Expensive Can a Shogran Valley Trip Be?

It depends on your selection for comfort and experience. There are chances of getting expenses to increase if you stay in an upscale hotel or guesthouse.

Your costs can quickly run from 15,000 to 20,000 rupees per head with reasonable accommodation, gas prices, and jeep packages. If you wish to reduce this cost, consider traveling in groups, camping out rather than booking a hotel room, using the coaster or bus, or bringing your food.

C ertain sites capture the world's imagination not only because of their beauty and the human ingenuity they exemplify but also because of their unique window into the past. These 13 UNESCO-protected spots, including many of the New Seven Wonders of the World, are among the most sought-after tourist attractions around the globe.

Whenever you visit a new place, you should take special care to carry out what you bring in, stick to assigned trails, and leave the environment better than you found it (even if that means grabbing trash another visitor left behind). But this rule is particularly important when it comes to these protected spaces. Many are vulnerable for a whole list of reasons, including climate impact and fragility due to very old age. You'll never know what to expect next, whether it's an intricate wall of azulejos (locally made tiles), a set of mock ruins tucked among the landscaping, or a massive dome overhead.

How to visit

Sintra is easy to reach from Lisbon-two trains make the one-hour journey every day. The most popular route is to take the train from the Rossio Station to the Sintra Station. It's not recommended to explore the city by car; many of the roads are very narrow and not built for modern transportation, and parking in the surrounding area can be tough during tourist high season (May through October).

2. Chichén Itzá

Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico

Chichén Itzá , a complex of pre-Columbian ruins on Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, thrived as one of the largest Mayan cities from 400 C.E. to the 1400s. It's thought to have had the most diverse population in the Mayan world due to the variety of Mesoamerican architectural styles on-site. Chichén Itzá's most famous structures include the Great Ball Court, the Temple of the Warriors, and El Castillo (also known as the Temple of Kukulkan), a step pyramid that towers over one of the most beautiful UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Chichén Itzá is a three-hour drive from Cancún and about 30 minutes from Valladolid. Tickets to Chichén Itzá can be purchased on-site. Entry costs approximately $36 for adults; entry for children 12 and under is free. The 16th-century colonial city has a baroque cathedral and a variety of accommodation options, from hotels with cenotes to the Coqui Coqui guesthouse and perfumery.

3. Jaipur City

Jaipur, India

The walled city of Jaipur is eye-catching for many reasons. At the top of the list is its rosy hue-the entire town was painted pink to welcome King Edward VII (then Prince Albert) in 1876, as pink was a color associated with hospitality. The prince supposedly deemed Jaipur the "Pink City," and it stuck. In 1877, Maharaja Ram Singh took it a step further by passing a law ordering all future buildings to have the same pink exterior, from temples to private residences. Jaipur was the first planned city in India, known for its grid design and symmetrical buildings with even patterns and rows of chhatri (elevated domes sitting atop buildings).

It's easy to get to Jaipur by train, car, or airplane from major cities in India. Jaipur is part of the Golden Triangle , a route that also includes New Delhi and Agra. You need at least a week to enjoy all that the Golden Triangle cities have to offer.

4. Machu Picchu

Located in the Peruvian Andes at nearly 8,000 feet above sea level, Machu Picchu cascades down a dramatic mountain spine surrounded by the Sacred Valley's jagged peaks. Millions of visitors flock to this UNESCO World Heritage site each year to see the terraces and classical dry-stone buildings of the citadel. While it is recognized as one of the top historic, World Heritage sites, Machu Picchu had a short life span. It was built by the Incas around 1450 but abandoned a century later during the Spanish conquest.

You can reach Aguas Calientes, the nearest town to Machu Picchu, by train from Cusco. Inca Rail, PeruRail, and the more luxurious Belmond Hiram Bingham train have daily service between the two destinations; the journey takes more than three hours. The Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel is a four-minute walk from the train station and looks like a village with terraced gardens, stone pathways, and guest rooms in adobe casitas.

Another way to visit Machu Picchu is to go on a guided hike of the famous Inca Trail, which can be booked through various tour operators in Cusco. Entry tickets cost approximately $23 for adults and $20 for students and must be purchased in advance for a specific date and time slot.

5. Angkor Wat

Siem Reap, Cambodia

With its wide moat and drip sand castle-like towers, Angkor Wat is one of the most scenic World Heritage sites and recognizable religious structures. King Suryavarman II, ruler of Southeast Asia's former Khmer Empire, directed the construction during the 12th century. The Hindu temple complex, a network of stone temples decorated with intricate carvings of devatas (Hindu deities), is even more impressive when you consider it's just one of the attractions at the UNESCO-designated Angkor Archaeological Park . Spread across approximately 400 acres in northwestern Cambodia, the complex has many other architecturally significant jungle-intertwined ruins and temples, including a temple featured in Angelina Jolie's 2001 Tomb Raider film, as well as inhabited villages.

The park entrance is approximately three miles north of the center of Siem Reap. A convenient way to visit Angkor Wat is to hire a tuk-tuk driver for about $20 a day. Visitors can buy tickets at the main entrance to the temple. One-day passes cost approximately $37 for adults; entry for children 12 and under is free.

There are many affordable hotels in Siem Reap, but book a safari-style tent at The Beige (where even the floating forest pool has views of the World Heritage site) for a slight splurge.

Wadi Musa, Jordan

During its zenith, Petra , Jordan's most famous archaeological site, was a bustling commerce center where citizens traded Arabian incense, Chinese silks, and Indian spices. Nabateans built the ancient city in the country's southwestern desert in 400 B.C.E., but it was unknown to the Western world until the 1800s. Accessed via a narrow canyon and with towering temples and tombs carved into pink sandstone cliffs (earning it the name "The Red Rose City"), it feels otherworldly. Perhaps that's why Petra's treasury stood in for the temple housing the Holy Grail in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade .

This UNESCO World Heritage site is about 150 miles south of Jordan's capital, Amman. Most visitors access Petra Archaeological Park through Wadi Musa, a nearby town with a handful of luxurious hotel offerings for travelers who make the trip to the rock-wall crypts. One-day tickets for visitors who spend at least a night in Jordan cost approximately $70 for adults; entry for children 12 and under is free.

7. Stonehenge

Wiltshire, United Kingdom

While experts agree that Stonehenge , a circle of stone megaliths in the English countryside, dates to 2500 B.C.E., the reason for its creation remains mysterious. Some archaeologists think ancient Britons built it for religious ceremonies, while others believe the structures were used to study the movements of the sun and the moon. Either way, the construction was an engineering feat. (To shape Stonehenge's megalithic structures, workers hammered wooden wedges into cracks in the stone and then used rope to pull each mass upright.)

Travelers can take a 2.5-hour train ride from London or an hour-long trip from Bath to get to Stonehenge. From the Wiltshire visitor center, a free shuttle bus makes frequent trips to the ruins. Tickets purchased in advance cost approximately $33 for adults and $20 for children. Tickets purchased on-site cost slightly more.

8. The Parthenon

Athens, Greece

Perched atop a rocky outcrop known as the Acropolis , in Athens, this classical and partly intact temple has presided over Greece's capital city since the Athenian Empire was at the peak of its power. In 447 B.C.E., the Athenians constructed the Parthenon-dedicated to the goddess Athena-to celebrate their victory over Persian invaders. It has since served as a city treasury, a Christian church dedicated to the Virgin Mary and, after the Ottoman conquest, a mosque. At the foot of the hill, the Acropolis Museum showcases the Parthenon frieze (although some sections are still controversially on display at London's British Museum), artifacts discovered on the Acropolis, and even the remains of an ancient neighborhood uncovered during the museum's construction.

Located in the center of Athens, the Parthenon is easy to visit thanks to metro and city bus stops nearby. The nearest metro stop is Acropoli. Tickets to the Acropolis can be purchased online or at the entrance. During high season, tickets to the Acropolis cost approximately $35 for adults and half that during the winter; entry is roughly $11 for students with ID.

9. The Great Wall of China

It took more than 2,500 years to build the Great Wall , China's most recognizable symbol, which snakes through the northern part of the country for more than 13,000 miles. During the 8th century B.C.E., the Zhou dynasty–era state of Chu began construction on the wall to protect against foreign invaders. Most tourists explore a section or two of the stone-and-brick fortification; it would take approximately 177 days of nonstop walking to see the entire wall.

Frequently visited sections of the wall include Mutianyu and Jinshanling. The former is a 90-minute drive from Beijing and an easy day trip; the latter takes twice as long to reach but is one of the wall's most well-preserved sections and is popular with hikers. Each section of the wall requires its own entry ticket. The cost is typically about $6 to $8, although prices vary.

10. Taj Mahal

Agra, India

The perfectly symmetrical Taj Mahal features a 240-foot-tall central dome and an exterior with inlaid semiprecious stones. Widely considered the most beautiful existing example of Mughal architecture, the white marble mausoleum was erected between 1631 and 1648 after Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan ordered its construction to honor his late wife. (He tapped approximately 20,000 of the best craftsmen from Central Asia to complete the project.) Jahan intended to build a second mausoleum for himself, but the building never came to fruition. After he passed away in 1666, the emperor was buried next to his wife. Visitors to this World Heritage site can explore the grounds' vast garden featuring long reflecting pools of water and a red sandstone gate.

Most people visit the Taj Mahal on a day trip from Delhi. There are many high-speed trains to Agra from Delhi, Varanasi, and cities across northern India's Rajasthan state. Tickets cost approximately $13 for adults; entry for children 15 and younger is free.

11. Easter Island

Located 2,200 miles off the coast of Chile, this remote island was named by 18th-century Dutch explorers who spotted the landmass on Easter Sunday. It's famous for its approximately 1,000 mammoth statues, which the Indigenous Polynesian inhabitants created from the 10th through 16th centuries to represent their ancestors. Rapa Nui National Park , which covers half of Easter Island, is the best place to see the carved figures, or moai . There are about 400 moai at the ancient quarry Rano Raraku, including a 70-foot-tall statue that was never raised upright. The most famous site, Tongariki, features 15 moai beside the ocean. Made from a soft volcanic rock called tuff, the monuments are vulnerable to the elements, and archaeologists believe one day they may disappear.

Latam operates two daily flights from Santiago de Chile to Hanga Roa, Easter Island's capital. The trip takes about 5.5 hours. The entrance fee to Rapa Nui National Park is $80 for adults, $40 for children.

12. The Pyramids at Giza

Cairo, Egypt

The Pyramids at Giza arose during a construction frenzy from 2550 to 2490 B.C.E. Egyptian pharaohs believed they would become gods in the afterlife, so they filled these elaborate tombs with everything they would need in the next world, including jewelry, furniture, and sculptures of servants. Pharaoh Khufu ordered the building of the first and largest of the three structures, known as the Great Pyramid. His son Pharaoh Khafre built the second pyramid with a necropolis (burial place) that includes the Great Sphinx, a limestone sculpture of a mythical creature with the body of a lion and the head of a human. Pharaoh Menkaure built the third and final temple. Each massive pyramid is part of a larger tomb complex that includes a palace, temples, and other features.

The pyramids are located on the Giza Plateau, about 11 miles southwest of Cairo. There isn't an easy way to get there using public transportation, so travelers typically take a taxi, use Uber, or hire a car and driver. A few hotels like the posh Marriott Mena House are within walking distance of the pyramids. (Tickets cost approximately $17 per person.)

MadLab to present 16 works in 'Roulette' retrospective

MadLab's "Roulette 25: A Radical Retrospective" celebrates 25 years of Theatre Roulette, central Ohio's longest-running short-play festival by restaging some of the company's most impactful productions.

Sixteen plays are categorized into three themes, each of which includes several plays. "Faded Families," with five plays, is to be presented at 8 p.m. Thursday, May 24 and June 1. "Lethal Liaisons," which includes five plays, is to be presented at 8 p.m. Friday, May 25 and May 30 and 2 p.m. June 1.

UnderCurrent events to offer fun under 'Current'

UnderCurrent, an event series being launched by Downtown Columbus, Inc., begins with a collaboration with the Columbus Museum of Art to bring the museum’s next BAM (Bar, Art, Music) event on Gay Street, between High and Wall streets from 5-9 p.m. Friday.

Like its name, the series takes place directly under “Current,” the cloudlike nylon sculpture by Janet Echelman that was installed last year. BAM offers a live DJ and dance party, interactive photo booth, live painting, food trucks, games and a cash bar. Admission is free. ( downtowncolumbus.com )

Long-running convention to bring sci-fi, fantasy to town

Neighborhood festivals to kick off on Near East Side

The latest series of Cap City Festivals, which have been held by the Columbus Recreation and Parks Department for more than a decade, will be hosted in various Columbus neighborhoods through August, offering free food and live music performances.

Illuminati ensemble to sing sacred and spiritual songs

The Columbus Gay Men’s Chorus (CGMC) is hosting a special concert by its sacred ensemble, Illuminati, one of the only LGBTQ+ sacred ensembles in the United States.

The group is to present its annual full-length concert, "Songs of the Spirit," at 2 p.m. Sunday at Worthington United Methodist Church, 600 High St., Worthington. The program consists of sacred and spiritual music (not exclusively Christian) with an increased presence of instrumentation as opposed to prior years.

A series of strong solar flares that the sun has been emitting since Wednesday morning could cause the northern lights to become visible this weekend to a wide swath of the United States.

The coronal mass ejections (CMEs) hurtling toward Earth prompted the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to issue a rare  Severe (G4) Geomagnetic Storm Watch on Thursday for the first time in 19 years. The geomagnetic storms that the CMEs would produce pose a limited threat to our communications, but they can also trigger the aurora borealis, better known as the northern lights.

And because the sun is at the height of its 11-year-cycle, the auroras have a very good chance of being seen by more Americans than usual .

Here's what to know about the northern lights, and when and where you may catch a glimpse of them this weekend.

What are the northern lights?

The auroras are a natural light display in Earth's sky that are famously best seen in high-latitude regions.

The northern lights materialize when energized particles from the sun reach Earth's upper atmosphere at speeds of up to 45 million mph, according to Space.com . Earth's magnetic field redirects the particles toward the poles through a process that produces a stunning display of rays, spirals and flickers that has fascinated humans for millennia.

When might the northern lights be most visible?

This week's solar activity brings with it the increased possibility of seeing the aurora across the U.S.

Though the timing is uncertain and the northern lights can be a particularly fickle forecast , officials at NOAA said the coronal mass ejections could reach Earth as early as Friday evening into Saturday, Shawn Dahl, a space weather forecaster at SWPC, told reporters Friday morning during a news briefing.

Experts from NOAA said auroras could be visible into Sunday.

The best aurora is usually within an hour or two of midnight (between 10:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. local time). These hours expand towards evening and morning as the level of geomagnetic activity increases, according to NOAA.

Where might the northern lights be best seen in the US?

The northern half of the U.S. is forecasted to be in the view path where the auroras may be most visible.

The best chances appear to be in northern Montana, Minnesota, Wisconsin and the majority of North Dakota, according to SWPC's  experimental Aurora viewline . The visibility for viewing will also depend on local weather conditions and city lights.

Experts at NOAA said the northern lights may even be visible as far south as Alabama and Northern California. If all else fails, experts even recommend taking a photo of the night sky with your cell phone – you never known what you may capture.

"Things that the human eye can't see, your phone can, so it'll be interesting to see just how far south we're getting aurora images this time," said Brent Gordon, Chief of Space Weather Services Branch for SWPC, on the Friday call with reporters.

The National Weather Service on Friday shared an aurora forecast for Friday night and early Saturday morning, showing more than a dozen states with at least a chance to see the lights.

How does the solar maximum influence the northern lights?

Explosive bursts of radiation known as solar flares and coronal mass ejections (eruptions of solar material) drive the geometric storms, releasing solar particles and electromagnetic radiation toward our planet.

As the frequency of coronal mass ejections increases at the height of its 11-year cycle,  which NASA said is expected to be in 2025 , electromagnetic activity on the sun peaks. What that so-called "solar maximum" means for us is that the risk increases for disruption to satellite signals, radio communications, internet and electrical power grids.

Last December , a powerful burst of energy created the largest solar flare that NASA had detected since 2017.

The last G4 level solar storm hit Earth in March , one of only three storms of that severity observed since 2019, according to NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center .

Just like in March, the upcoming solar storm will have particles flowing from the sun that get caught up in Earth's magnetic field, causing colorful auroras to form as they interact with molecules of atmospheric gases. The resulting glowing green and reddish colors of the aurora may be quite a sight to see.
