Paris for family: A 5-day itinerary full of fun

Paris is an ideal city for a family vacation, with a wealth of green spaces with playgrounds and interactive museums to keep restless toddlers and teens entertained.

You can stay a month in Paris and still have plenty left to do—but for vacationing families, five days is a good start to cover the main highlights, like the Eiffel Tower and the Tuileries Garden . This 5-day family itinerary covers the city’s main districts and must-see attractions, with family-friendly activities for you to choose from, including a day trip to Disneyland Paris .

Where to stay in Paris

It’s easy to find family-friendly hotels in Paris but the question is: which districts are best for families? For your first visit to Paris, Le Marais makes an excellent base for its central location, expansive parks, and abundance of shops and eateries. The Latin Quarter is another bustling district with value-for-money accommodations such as Hotel La Lanterne and Villa Pantheon . Day 1: The center of Paris

Spend your first day in the center of Paris, home to cultural sites such as the Louvre Museum and the Notre Dame Cathedral . This pedestrian-friendly area encompasses the 1st to the 4th arrondissements on the right bank of the Seine . Visit the stunning Tuileries Garden , which will keep the kids busy for hours with its trampoline park, carousel, and Ferris wheel. Walk along the Seine and cross historic bridges such as Pont Neuf for splendid city views.

If you ask most people, they would say that Paris is one of the most magical places to visit, with some of the most iconic landmarks in the world. Those same people would also agree that it can be very overwhelming to travel there for your first time, especially if you’re traveling with kids. It can be intimidating to think about taking a long flight, navigating public transportation, and touring places like the Louvre and Sacre Coeur with kids in tow. We know all about it, as our family recently traveled to Paris for 3 weeks. See how we made the best of traveling to Paris with our kids for the first time.

Getting to Paris

Traveling to Paris with young kids can be a fun but can also be tough to navigate, especially all the way from he USA. Here are a few ways to make the trip as smooth as possible for the kids:

Be sure to book the flights and accommodations well in advance to ensure that you get the best prices and best travel times for kids. It’s helpful to book a late flightier of the US, so that everyone can sleep overnight before arrival to Paris.

Don’t forget essentials like good snacks, electronics, and something fun for the kids, but otherwise pack light. Just a backpack for the kids is the best way to make the trip easy for them.

Consider a layover

A reasonable layover can be a great option when traveling with kids. Breaking up the long flight gives your kids a chance to stretch their legs and get some fresh air.

Make the flight more comfortable

Do your best to book a flight with a kid-friendly schedule. Select a seat with extra legroom. Pack comfy clothes, blankets, and pillows to make the flight more comfortable for the kids.

Be prepared for jet lag

Paris is six hours ahead of the US East Coast, so most kids will likely experience jet lag. Having lots of activities and snacks to keep them occupied during the early part of the flight will help them rest in the later part.

Paris has so much to see and do, but it can be hard to decide when the best time to visit is. Taking into account factors such as weather, crowds, and kid-friendly activities can be helpful in planning.

I would visit Paris during the spring or fall months. The weather is mild, making it comfortable to explore the city with kids. Days are longer, which means you have more time to see the sights. Crowds are much lighter, thereforeeasier to navigate the city with kids.

Springtime in Paris

Spring is a particularly nice time to visit Paris with kids. The city comes alive with blooming flowers and trees. The Jardin des Tuileries, Luxembourg Gardens, and Parc des Buttes-Chaumont are all great places to take the kids to see the flowers. The lines are also much shorter to see Eiffel Tower and the views are stunning.

Paris in the Fall

Fall is also a really good time to visit Paris with kids. It’s still warm enough for kids to enjoy outdoor activities, but the crowds are thinned out from high season. Fall leaves make for a beautiful backdrop in photos. Many of the Paris museums and galleries offer kid-friendly activities during this time of year as well.

Summertime in Paris

During the summer months the museums and galleries offer kid-friendly activities. The parks and gardens are perfect for picnics and playtime. Also, the iconic landmarks are open a bit later, so more time to explore with the kids.

What to pack

Before packing your bags and heading off on your family adventure, it’s important to make sure you have everything you need for a trip with kids. Here are the top things to pack for kids when visiting Paris:

Comfortable shoes

Paris is a city of walking, you and the family will be doing a lot of it. Be certain to pack comfortable shoes that fit well and have good support. Preventing blisters and tired feet, so your kids can enjoy all the sights and sounds of the city.

Snacks and water

Thought you’ll be trying lots of new foods in Paris, you’ll also want to have snacks and water on hand for your kids. Pack some granola bars, fresh fruit, and other easy to carry snacks in a backpack. This will really come in handy while you’re out exploring.

Warm clothes

Paris can get very chilly, especially in the evening time. Make sure you pack some warm clothes for the kids. Having a jacket, warm hats, and gloves will help keep them comfortable when the temperature drops.

Entertainment

Pack a few small toys, books, and small games to keep the kids entertained during downtime. This will save you on those long days when touring is too much or while on transportation to and from visits.

First-aid kit

Accidents happen, we know first hand! It’s always a good idea to pack a small first-aid kit. Include band-aids, antiseptic, and any medications your kids might need if they get a cut or something worse.

Encourage your kids to document their trip by giving them a small camera or a disposable one. It’s fun to playback the trips’ memories through their eyes!

Transportation in Paris with kids

With so much to see and do in Paris, traveling with kids in can be a bit of a challenge when it comes to transportation. Here’s some of the best options for getting around the city with kids:

The metro system is one of the most efficient and affordable ways to get around Paris. It’s very easy to navigate, making it a great option for families with kids. The trains run very frequently and the stations are located near the most popular attractions. While most stations have escalators and elevators, they can be crowded, so use backpacks and c carryons to help.

Navigo Easy Card

You can purchase a Navigo Easy Card (with fares preloaded) at any Paris Métro or RER ticket booth. Pay in cash or with a credit or debit card. If you’re buying cards for children, make this clear to the ticket agent. We suggest asking for “Navigo Easy avec un carnet.” The ticket agent will load 10 rides onto the card, so you’ll be ready to use Navigo Easy right away.

Buses are a really good option for getting around Paris with kids. Though they’re a bit slower than the metro, they still offer a great way to take in the sights with kids. Buses are equipped with ramps, so they’re easy to navigate with strollers or wheelchairs. Many of the bus routes run righty through the city’s most popular areas, making it easy to get around.

Taxis are a bit more expensive than the metro or buses, but they offer the convenience of door-to-door service. Many taxis in Paris are equipped with car seats, so you don’t have to worry about bringing your own. Good option for unpredictable weather occurrences and times when you’re in a hurry.

Walking is one of the best ways to explore Paris with kids, as it is one of the most walkable cities. Such a great way to see the city up close and take in the sights and sounds of Paris. Best thing about walking is the kids can burn off some energy after snacking.

Can’t miss places to eat in Paris with kids

Paris is a kid-friendly city with many great restaurants that are happy to accommodate children, and many even have special menus or activities to keep them entertained.

From cozy bistros to casual restaurants, you’ll find something for everyone. Remember to take your time, relax and enjoy the delicious food and the wonderful atmosphere. Bon appétit!

Here are some of our favorite places to eat in Paris with kids:

This was the girls first Parisian cafe experience. The place is absolutely beautiful, full of energy and such great atmosphere. The kids had the famous hot chocolate that tasted like a melted down candy bar. It’s served in a tea pot with a side of the best homemade whipped cream you’ll ever have to dollop onto your hot chocolate. Of course, they also have a great selection of pastries and some of the best macaroons in Paris.

Note: There is enough in the pot on a single order for 2 or 3 children to share, as it it is very rich.

See how much we enjoyed our time there!

Girafe has one of the most spectacular views of the Eiffel Tower, day or night. While the menu is a bit more sophisticated, serving up caviar and champagne, it is still a great place for the kids. There’s always something to watch from the terrace, including artists, performers, and of course the Eiffel Tower light show Avery hour at night. I would recommend getting a reservation a few weeks in advance for lunch and ordering shareables, so you can break up the day of walking.

Lou Lou is a coffee shop and beer garden, serving all day brunch near the Cluny Gardens in St. Germain. The menu includes delicious and healthy options that our kids really enjoyed. Paleo banana pancakes, eggs Benedict, Acai bowls, and pressed juices. The neighborhood is one of my favorites, so plan on walking around before or after lunch to explore the beautiful shops.

Note: Their Matcha Latte was the best I’ve ever had, worth a try even if you’ve never tried one.

Le Relais De L’Entrecote

The famous steak frites from Le Relais de L’Entrecôte is something everyone must experience while in they are in Paris. They have a set menu of salad and steak-frites that is accompanied by their famous sauce. They offer the same menu for the kids, which makes it very easy when ordering. My girls absolutely loved everything and asked for seconds, which is part of the experience.

Note: There is most always a line that forms outside every night and can look like it’s too much to endure with hungry kids, but it is deceiving and moves relatively fast. It’s worth jumping in line!

Pink Mama has some of the best Italian food I’ve ever had (I know we’re in Paris!) and is one of my favorite restaurants ever. Everything on the menu is exceptional; the fresh pasta, the cheeses, and the drinks. To be honest, the mocktails that the kids had were as good, if not better than the specialty drinks. The Melon salad is something else and the desserts were great as well. Be sure to visit the rooftop terrace, as it is stunning and perfect for pictures.

Cafe de Flore

Cafe de Flore is one of the oldest coffeehouses in Paris dating back to 1887. Their menu is pretty simple, with sandwiches, cheeses, breakfast items, and great coffee. It’s pretty easy to find something for the kids, especially from the breakfast menu. I recommend the assortment of cheeses to share at an outside table to watch the passers by and soak in the Parisian culture.

Cafe des Arts et Métiers 

We stumbled upon this typical Parisian brasserie while walking near the museum, and we’re so glad we did. Delicious food with a spectacular terrace and great service. Plenty of options for children and very affordable. Cafe des Arts is another really good place to sit for a while and just people watch.

Other great places to try

• GROM – this is a chain but its seriously some of the best gelato we have ever had. We passed by it in St. Germain and there was a line around the block so we knew we had to try it
• Crepes – you can find crepes everywhere and I am sure there are some places that make extraordinary there is something about having a crepe from a stand on the side of the road under the Eiffel Tower that makes it taste so much better.

Where to stay when visiting Paris with kids

Choosing where to stay in Paris with kids can feel a bit daunting at first, as there are so many neighborhoods to choose from.

Novotel Paris Gare De Lyon

The property at Gare De Lyon was great for us, right next to the train station. It was a little far out from the city center, but it was also nice to be in a quieter neighborhood for downtime. We’ve also been to Paris before, so we enjoyed touring the neighborhoods nearby. If this is your first time to Paris, I would recommend staying a bit closer to the popular spots you might be visiting.

We ultimately chose this hotel because it would make our trip to Disneyland Paris a bit easier since we were so close to the train station.

Other great places to stay with kids

• Hyatt Regency Paris Etoile – This hotel is in a great location close to the Eiffel Tower. It is popular so be sure to book in advance
• Novotel Paris Centre Tour Eiffel – Another great location. We really liked the Novotel brand for their spacious room and cool designs
• MEININGER Hotel Paris Porte de Vincennes – This hotel looks super family friendly. Lots to do for little ones and they even have events for kids!
• Appartement de standing 5 – tour Eiffel/Invalides – If you prefer renting an apartment this one has a lot of space.
• RESIDENCE MONTORGUEIL – Another spacious apartment that can sleep 9. I also love the location in the city.

Other great Neighborhoods to stay in Paris with kids:

Known for its winding streets, charming cafés, and famous artistic history, Montmartre is a great place to stay with kids. The neighborhood is home to the famous Sacré-Cœur Basilica, which offers breathtaking views of the city, as well as the Montmartre Museum, which is dedicated to the area’s artistic past. Montmartre is also home to many playgrounds and parks, which are perfect for kids to run around in.

This charming neighborhood is perfect for families looking for a taste of Parisian life. The Marais is home to many small, family-friendly restaurants, as well as the Carnavalet Museum, which is dedicated to the history of Paris. The neighborhood is also home to the Place des Vosges, a beautiful square filled with playgrounds and green spaces, where kids can play and have fun.

The 7th Arrondissement

Known for its grand Haussmann-style buildings, the 7th Arrondissement is home to many of Paris’ famous landmarks, including the Eiffel Tower and the Invalides. Many of the hotels in the area have family rooms or suites, which can be ideal for families with children.

1st Arrondissement

The 1st Arrondissement is a great place for families who want to stay near the most famous attractions in Paris. Known for its chic shops, cafes, and restaurants, many of the streets are pedestrian-only and easy to explore with kids. Not to mention, it’s in the city center and well-connected to the rest of Paris by Metro.

Latin Quarter

The Latin Quarter is a great place to stay if you’re looking for a more lively neighborhood. The area is home to many small, independent shops and restaurants, as well as the Luxembourg Gardens, a beautiful park where children can play. The neighborhood is also home to the Sorbonne University, which can be fun for kids to explore.

Sightseeing in Paris with Kids

Paris is a city that’s known for its rich culture and history, making it the perfect destination for a family vacation. With its iconic landmarks, charming streets, and delicious food, there’s something for everyone in Paris, including kids. If you’re planning a trip to the city of lights with your little ones, here are some of the best sights and activities that they’ll love.

Eiffel Tower 

The Eiffel Tower is one of the most iconic landmarks in all of Europe, so naturally there are lots of crowds. If you are looking to visit the 1st or 2nd floors with the kids, I recommend you get there early. The 1st floor has great views and some interactive displays for the kids. The 2nd floor has even better views of the The Louvre, Notre Dame, the Seine River, and other famous landmarks. Our favorite view of the tower is from across the street alongside the Seine at night, where you can ride a carousel and watch the light show from a distance.

The Louvre is home to some of the most well-known works of art like the Mona Lisa. It’s also one of the most visited museums in the world. If you would like to avoid the lines at the entrance, you simply go online and book a time and date. The entrance fee is free for children and visitors under the age of 26, and there are other memberships that include admission. The Louvre is huge and requires several days to tour everything. We recommend focusing on a certain section with your family or taking a family tour with a guide to get the most out of your experience.

Tip: If you do not book the tour, but still visit the information desk when entering the building, you can grab their children’s guide books, which are also scavenger hunts and lots of fun.

Versailles 

The Palace of Versailles is another must-see for kids. This former royal residence is located just outside of Paris and is home to grand gardens, beautiful fountains, and opulent palace rooms. Children will love seeing the luxurious apartments and grand halls. The palace also offers audio guides and interactive tours that can make the visit more interactive and fun for children.

When you’re planning your Paris itinerary, especially with kids in tow, it’s important to understand that Paris is a city that is best explored by foot. This means that you should plan to spend most of your time walking around and exploring the different neighborhoods and areas. This is a great way to discover hidden gems and get a feel for the city’s culture and history.

Ride the train around Sacré Cœur

It’s a pretty short ride, but it does take you through the town and down the hill you worked so hard to climb to get there. You can easily get off at the bottom when you’re done for the day. It drops you near Moulin Rouge. Book a Walking Tour Here

Visit Disneyland Paris

One of the most popular things to do in Paris with kids is to visit Disneyland Paris . This theme park is located about 20 miles outside of the city and is a great way to spend a day or two.

Such a great day trip for the family. So much to see inside and out that the kids are sure to enjoy. You can start by having breakfast at ORE and then skip the line by booking HERE .

Eiffel Tower at night

What a spectacular view of the Tower at night! There are also special lighting displays on the hour starting at 9pm.

Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie – One of the best ways to keep kids entertained in Paris is to visit some of the city’s many museums and attractions that are geared towards children. The Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie is a great option, as it has a range of interactive exhibits that will keep kids of all ages engaged.

Everything you need to know before visiting Paris with kids

As parents we know it’s essential to do our research and be prepared for a trip with your kids in tow. Here are some things to keep in mind when planning a visit to Paris with kids.

• Paris is a very walkable city. While it may seem daunting to explore the city on foot with kids, it’s actually a great way to see the sights and take in the culture. Pack a stroller or baby carrier to make navigating the cobblestone streets and staircases a bit easier.
• Paris has an excellent public transportation system, including the metro, bus, and RER (regional express network) trains. However, it can be overwhelming and confusing for children, especially if they are not used to it. Make sure to plan your route in advance and have a map handy. Also, consider purchasing a Paris Visite pass, which allows you unlimited travel on the metro, bus, and RER for a specific period
• While many Parisians speak English, it’s always helpful to know a few basic French phrases. Your kids can learn some basic French before the trip, which will help them feel more comfortable in the city. Additionally, having a translation app on your phone can come in handy.

Going to Paris always fills me with excitement.

I fell in love with the city when I was little, mainly because of the playground in the Jardin de Luxembourg , which I deemed for ages the best in the world!

My love affair with the city stayed alive during my many trips there as a student, a girlfriend and a solo traveler.

Things haven’t changed now that I am a mom and the one thing that fills me with excitement more than going back to Paris is to to go to Paris with the kids.

Paris is wonderful for children: exciting, aspirational, beautiful, grand. Paris is a city of dreams for all ages, including very young ones!

Despite my love for Paris as a family destination, there is no doubt that a trip to Paris with children in tow requires a lot more planning than other destinations.

Paris is full of kids’ attractions and one of the  best places to visit in France with kids , but it is easier with practical tips from a mon who’s been – like me! 

From picking the right accommodation to knowing how to get around and what attractions will pique the children’s interest, this is our family guide to visiting Paris with kids!

Why visit Paris with kids

There are so many reasons why you should visit Paris with children!

• Paris is one of the big capitals of the world, a marvel of architecture, culture and a cradle of art. A dream for cosmopolitan, travel loving families!
• Paris is easy and function wells. Despite being a massive capital, Paris has excellent public transport and very clear maps and information that help you make your way around the city
• Paris hasexdeptional parks and playgrounds, perfect for kids to have a break from sightseeing
• Paris has outstanding food, including kids’ favourites such as pancakes, macaroons, croque Monsieur just to name a few
• Paris is home to stunning museums, both traditional (Louvre, Mousee D’Orsay) and interactive (Parc de la Villette)
• Paris is great to mix with a trip to Disneyland Paris and versailles, two very different yet very exciting places for children

Why not visit Paris with kids

Not everyone loves Paris for kids (I do). Usually, the issues Paris poses to families are:

High price / small spaces when it comes to accommodation

Chaotic – yes, it is, but it is a massive capital so I believe this comment has more to do with expectations than the city itself.

Not overly child friendly – I’d say this is partially true. With small children in a stroller, you may find Paris less accommodating than other cities.

Restaurants tend to have small spaces and not everywhere will allow you to keep the stroller open or be willing to heat up toddlers food.

In this sense, I find Paris more enjoyable with kids of primary school age and up but don’t let it discourage you: Patios is so stunning, with a few tips you can enjoy it with kids of any age!

First timer’s guide to visiting Paris with kids: travel tips

• Book accommodation well in advance and double check for special events that may get prices to spike at certain times
• Stay in the city centre  (see below recommended areas) to minimize transport time
• Consider an apartment rather than a hotel for extra space
• Embrace public transport
• Book skip the line tickets for main attractions
• Don’t expect to see all! Paris is best enjoyed at a slow pace

 When to go to Paris: the best time to visit Paris with kids

The best time to go to Paris with kids is the spring and early fall, particularly the months of April to June and September and early October.

At this time the weather is mild and city life is in full swing, so you get a local feel that just gets lost during the hot summer months, when Parisians go on holiday.

During the spring make sure you visit Paris parks and join the locals in what seems to be the activity of choice in good weather: a picnic!

In the fall Paris, the temperatures drop steadily and depending on the exact time of your visit you may be in for a treat with the city foliage.

These are some excellent books for you and your kids to be ready for your first trip to Paris as a family.

Paris packing list for families: must haves

• Baby Carrier. A good baby carrier in Paris is a real life saver, especially on public transport. We are fond of BabyBjorn and Ergo Baby both favorite of our kids when they were babies.
• Lightweight stroller. A good, lightweight and easy to fold stroller is excellent for city travel. We love our Maclaren Quest and we have a list of others we recommend here
• Comfortable walking shoes. Shoes with a padded sole that keep you comfortable on Paris pavements are great for adults and kids. We love Adidas foam , New Balance shoes and Nike trainers  for all of us
• Stylish backpack diaper bag to use as a day bag with changes, food and essentials. You can find some of our favorite diaper bags for travel here
• Camera for you and maybe one for the kids too such as this one  so they can capture memories too

Where to stay in Paris with kids: apartment or hotel?

Finding family friendly accommodation in Paris is one of the biggest ordeals, when planning a trip to the city and this is why I tackle this as the first item on my Paris family trip panning guide.

Paris hotels have notoriously small rooms, many of the more traditional building do not have lifts and many ’boutique’ hotels have bathrooms that are so tiny you need to squeeze into the shower – not something you want or can do easily with a baby or toddler!

A similar situation awaits you in apartment: while often bigger than hotels, in the city center price comes at a premium.

However, we can help!

Best areas to stay in Paris with kids and family

Paris neighborhoods are called arrondissements and they are identified by a number from 1 to 20.

You can familiarize yourself with all of them and their location and feel reading this excellent guide to the Paris’ arrondissements with all you need to know about them.

I believe that the best areas to stay in Paris with kids are the 5th and 6th arrondissements , the 7th and the area of le Marais.

The 5th and 6th arrondissements

The 5th and 6th arrondissements are my favourite place to stay in Paris with kids for convenience and charm.

These two areas sit South of the river Seine, on the famous Rive Gauche and include pleasant neighbourhoods and significant landmarks such as the Jardin des Plants, the Pantheon and the Jardin du Luxembourg.

It is a touristy area and you will find a plethora of restaurants, shops and attractions here but I do love it because it is super central and has some beautiful parks, perfect for family time.

This is an excellent area to stay if you want to be in the heart of the action, close to main Paris landmarks and you enjoy a buzzy, studenty atmosphere: the famous Sorbonne university is here.

Good family hotels in the 5th and 6th arrondissments are:

Hotel Bel Ami (5 stars) , close to Jardin du Luxembourg and with interconnecting rooms

Hotel Dauphine St Germain (3 stars) , offering interconnecting rooms and small kids gift on arrival

Hotel Paris Excelsior Latin (3 star hotel) : a rare find, offering family rooms for up to 5 people

The 7th arrondissement

The 7th arrondissment is where you find the Eiffel Tower.

Because of this more than famous landmark, I used to think this area would be touristy and inauthentic but this is far from the truth.

The 7th arrondissment is lovely for a stay and very suited to families too.

It is a much quieter area than the ones above, it is well served with restaurants and cafes and is of course close to what is likely to be the one thing your kids are hoping to see in Paris, the tower itself!

Good family hotels in the 7th arrondsissmnet are:

Hotel D’Orsay (4 stars) in a fantastic, central location offering triple rooms and interconnecting suites

Novotel Paris Tour Eiffel (4 stars) with rooms for up to 4 people (2 adults and 2 children) and restaurant onsite

Hotel de la Paix Tour Eiffel (3 stars) with interconnecting rooms for up to 5 people

Not an arrondissment but an area within one, le Marais is a gorgeous, historical area on the opposite side of the river from the ones above.

Le Marais is famous for beautiful, elegant squares, beautiful shops and the famous centre Pompidou (incidentally, very child-friendly).

I have always loved le Marais as I feel it has a hip feel to it while retaining a residential, family-friendly atmosphere.

Good family-friendly hotels in the Marais are:

Hotel Saint Louis Marais (3 stars) with family rooms and private parking

Les Tournelles (3 star hotel) with adjoining rooms

How to get around Paris with kids in tow

The best way to move around Paris with kids in tow is to walk or make use of the excellent public transport system of the city.

Transport types and ticket option

The public network is made of buses, metro lines and the RER, the metropolitan train line that connects Paris city centre with the Greater Paris area, some Paris airports and Disneyland Paris.

Transport is free for children under 4 and half price for children between 4 and 11 years old.

As a tourist, you are likely to use the metro most of all and the RER. 

There are several types of tickets available and you can purchase them before boarding the train in all Paris metro stations, equipped with ticket machines, ticket offices and sometimes both.

You can buy a single hop ticket or a carnet  of 10 tickets, more convenient.

Tickets are electronic and need to be scanned before bording the train.

Keep hold of your tickets and make sure your kids keep theirs safe too as they are sometimes needed to get out of the station on arrival too!

The same tickets for the metro are valid on buses too.

Using the Paris public transport system with a stroller

The Paris metro and bus system is excellent for adult visitors and people travelling with older kids but things are ‘a little’ less straightforward when you try tackle the system with a stroller.

Very simply: the Paris public transport system is not stroller friendly!

Not all metro stations are stroller friendly, many do not have a lift and buses can only take up to 2 strollers at a time, which means you may have to wait for a free space before being allowed on board.

Even worse, many metro stations have gaps between the train and platform and it is very easy to trip, especially if you are a child!

If you can, travel with a baby carrier instead or enlist the help of your other half or a friend to navigate the metro escalators (One gets the child, the other steps on it with the stroller facing the bottom of the escalator).

For sanity, do not overload your stroller with stuff so, worse case, you can swiftly fold it closed.

Top things to do in Paris with kids

Paris is so full of sites and family-friendly attractions this topic deserves an article on its own but to make this family guide complete, I’ll try and list some of our favourite things to do in Paris with kids.

Below you find lots of ideas and things to do in Paris with kids but first, I want to share a tour that you may love, should you have only a limited time in the city: Paris in a day tour with river cruise .

This tour is perfect for families on a first trip to Paris and who want to make the most of their time in the city seeing Paris’ highlights, without the stress of having to find your way or look like a tourist consulting a map.

During a full day, you will see the Louvre, take photos of Paris famous sites such as Eiffel Tower and Sacre Coeur and you will be able to relax on a river cruise!

Go to the Eiffel Tower and the Trocadero

We simply had to open this list with the Eiffel tower, THE attractions most kids associate and identify with the city of Paris.

Depending on the age of your children and relationship with heights, you may queue up and get to the top or even just enjoy it from its base.

The Eiffel Tower is surrounded by a massive lawn and kids can run and scoot around for ages with quite a special backdrop.

The park around the towers also has a couple of playgrounds that make it an easy stop for kids of all ages.

The Eiffel Tower is an exceptionally popular attraction and advance booking is mandatory.

A fantastic way to visit is to book a semi-private small tour such as this one , which takes care of the getting the tickets and comes with a wonderful guide almost exclusively for you (groups are for a max of 6 people so you may well find yourself with a guide just for your family!

Tip! If you have school age kids, you can find many fun facts about the Eiffel Tower here: they are a fun way to put the tower in context and some of them are sure to get a wow – the tower is pretty unique!

Make sure you take the time to also go to the Trocadero, on the other side of the river, where kids can splash around and catch the quintessential Eiffel tower view.

If you have little ones, you may enjoy the small yet cute Aquarium Cineaqua nearby.

Play in Jardin du Luxembourg

Paris has many beautiful gardens and one that usually gains the approvals of both kids and adults is the Luxembourg Gardens, in Paris city centre.

There is loads to see and do here from playgrounds to the park’s famous marionette show.

The activity of choice for kids here seems to be renting one of the toy boats from the local stall and make them race along the water in the park fountain: you can rent one for about 4 euro and indeed, they are great fun!

This is one of the best playgrounds in Paris and it is in such a central location, it is easy to add a stop here while sightseeing.

See Paris’ Arc de Triomphe

Arc de Triomphe is one of the most ironing landmarks in Paris and a place my son in particular loves.

The arch itself is just what you think it is but it is exciting for kids on a couple of accounts:

One, you can climb to the top of it!

The view from it is fun and it is not that big to cause problems to people like me, who suffer from a mild a fear of heights. You can find tickets and photos here .

The other big reason why my son loves it is that the Arc is a busy roundabout with tons of cars!

If you have a little one who loves seeing vehicles zooming by, be prepared to have them mesmerised buy the cars here!

Have a stroll on the Paris’ islands

Paris has two beautiful islands: Isle de la cite and isle Saint Lois.

Ile de la cite is where you find Notre Dame and Ice St Luis is the little island just beside it.

Having a stroll here with kids is a delight!

The islands are quintessentially Parisian and walking here, with the river, Notre Dame and the cobbles streets makes you feel like you are on a movie set!

Visit spooky Paris’ Catacombs

If you kids love weird and spooky places, then you can treat them to a tour of the Paris’ Catacombs!

Unlike the catacombs in Rome, the catacombs of Paris date from the XIII century and were quarries then turned cemeteries!

Here, you find yourself walking along narrow tunnels over 100 steps underground and find yourself up close and personal with bone art, skulls, and a full chapel decorated with bone remains!

There are several tours of the catacombs available. I like this one by LivTours which is expensive but offers wonderful guide and a small group setting.

Visit the Louvre with a kid-friendly tour

A big museum such as Le Louvre may be daunting with kids; however, the Louvre is so spectacular, I believe it is worth seeing at any age!

Depending on the age of your children, you can bring them to the ancient area, which I find often the most exciting for kids, you can go to see famous Mona Lisa, or get them to engage into a self-made scavenger hunt on a quest for the louvre’s masterpieces!

Setting the kids off to find works of art is one of our tricks to visit traditional museums as a family: usually, we do so by buying postcards in the museum shop first but the Louvre also has an app with a section for kids that is perfect for this use!

See Paris from the water

La Seine, Paris’ river, crosses the city and is the perfect vantage point too see enjoy the view of some of Paris’ most famous sights.

The river is a waterway served by many boat companies offering river cruises for all ages and budgets, from hop on – hop off options to full on dinner cruises at candlelight!

A river cruise is a great pastime in Paris with kids as it allows you to see a lot without small legs getting too tired.

Jet lag day idea! If you arrive in Paris after a long flight, a river cruise can be ideal to get a first sense of the city and the lay of the land without having to walk!

Explore the Centre Pompidou

Can a world-class museum be family-friendly?

If we are talking about the Centre Pompidours the answer is a resounding yes.

From the museum’s incredible outside with colorful tubes and escalators to exhibitions just for the kids, the centre is a fantastic place to spend a few hours.

Be ready for kids to get wet in the nearby fountains if visiting on a hot day… it’s irresistible.

Learn to make macaroons with a fun macaroon class

If, like me, you have a child who loves to cook, then one of the best things to so in Paris with kids is a macaroon class!

This one happens in the Galeries Lafayette: an excellent excuse to visit this most iconic Parisian shop! Choose the parent and child option if going with children under 12.

Catch the view from the top of Printemps

If your kids love heights, they will adore the terrace at the top of Printemps (department store).

Access to the terrace is free and you can choose between several restaurants both outdoors and indoors to rest for a bite or even just a drink.

The view is sure to impress the kids but should they need a little extra, just stop at the children’s floor of the store for a toy-shop experience to remember!

Visit the Jardin des Plantes

This garden has a special place in my heart since it was my local park during my summers in Paris.

It is a lovely place for adults and kids on a sunny day and is also where the Natural History Museum is.

The garden has some sure-hit with the kids including a small playground, the zoo (you can see the wallabies from the playground!) and the dodo-ride, a super cute and atmospheric vintage carousel.

As well as the garden, make sure you have a stroll in this area as it is truly lovely: check out rue Mouffettard for crepes and the nearby Lutece’s Arena to tap into Paris’ Roman history.

Get lost around Montmartre

Charming Montmartre watches silently over Paris and is a pleasure to explore.

It is quite a trek from Paris city centre but it is always worth the metro ride, especially on a good day when you can get a view over the city.

Here it is all about coffee shops, street artists (many for tourists, but fun nonetheless) and the famous Sacre Coeur, the white church towering over Montmartre meandering streets.

One word of caution: with small kids, don’t get the metro to the bottom of the hill thinking of climbing up: it is all stairs and the bits that aren’t stairs are really steep!

Cycle around Boi de Boulogne

Another stunning garden or a forest as the name suggests, this is a wide and fabulous green space not too far from the city centre.

Our best day out here was when we rented bikes and discovered the place this way but of course, you don’t have to do that. 

You can also opt just for a stroll, a ride on one of the local rowing boats or a visit to the kids favorite Jardin de Acclimatation, which includes a park with kids rides.

Parc de la Villette

Parc de la Villette is a huge space designed to get visitors to play and interact with nature, art and technology.

La Villette hosts the fabulous science museum cite des science , which is one of the biggest in Europe and is fabulous for kids, and also has 12 themed gardens.

The gardens are a delight with kids and they are a great space to burn some energy while taking is some pretty remarkable artifacts and constructions. One of the best places of all to visit in Paris with kids!

Tips for Eating out in Paris with kids

Eating out in Paris with kids is a little less straight forward than in other places, especially for dinner.

Dinner time tends to be much later than, let’s say, in the British Isles and many cafes and restaurants are pretty family-unfriendly.

This, either in the sense that they have little space (or no space at all for a stroller) or in the sense that they have little facilities and tolerance for small kids.

However, especially in the last few years, the Paris food scene has witnessed many changes.

Besides the more traditional French restaurants, you now have eateries, tapas bars, markets and fusion restaurants that mix the French flair for cuisine with a more casual approach, often with fabulous results.

During the day, you will find plenty of options to eat out with your kids. For dinner, the following tips and addresses may come in handy.

• Show up at the right time.  Restaurants in Paris are only open at certain times and often not before 7pm.

If you need more flexibility, you may want to to a brasserie instead or informal eateries and cafes, which tend to have continuous service

Leave the stroller at home.  One of the most common reasons for restaurants in Paris not to be child-friendly is space.

They are often crammed and while this can be wonderfully atmospheric, if you show up with a buggy you may literally not be able to get in!

Don’t assume they’ll be able to accommodate high chairs .

Again for space issues, often there is no room for a high chair.

If your child is not old enough for a standard one, I have a selection of good children’s table harnesses and packable high chairs that can come in handy in Paris.

In summer, a terrace, usually more accommodating for buggies and strollers.

• Embrace International restaurants and chains as they tend to be the most child-friendly spaces.

They usually are accommodating to children and some have a kids menu and even crayons to colour while waiting.

Some family-friendly addressed to eat in Paris with kids: Sapori di Parma (Italian),  Blue Elephant (Thai),  Schwartz Deli (American style burgers. No kids menu but big portions, good for sharing), Mediterranea (tapas, with kids menu), Aloha cafe (coffee, sweets, lunch), Che He (Asian),

Buying your flight to paris.

Right now, Paris is probably the cheapest city in Europe to fly to from the United States. I’ve seen some KILLER DEALS including a $380 flight in September! Someone, please go for me! Before heading to Paris with kids, it’s great to give them a little knowledge about the city or about artists or paintings that you will see. It is so much fun to see their faces light up when they see something that they’ve read about in a book!

Before your Paris trip with kids, it’s a good idea to do some research with them. This will always make your trip more meaningful together. Start by reading the books above and learning some interesting facts about France.

2. Where to Stay

Apartment or home rentals.

If you’ve been with us a while, you know that our favorite way to stay is an apartment or home rental . There are tons of nice and affordable apartments in Paris within walking distance of major attractions! I like staying near the Eiffel Tower because it is just so magical to come home to at night! I also love the 1-4 arrondissement. Learn more about where to stay in Paris with kids .

I’ve found hotels to be fairly affordable in Paris and there are several that accommodate larger families, which I find so refreshing with 4 kids in tow! I have the best luck with Hotels.com and we get frequent free nights by using their rewards program. Enter the anumberof adults and children in your party and at the bottom of each hotel listing, you will see little head icons showing you how many the room can hold. Also ,search everything in map view on Hotels.com and AirBnB to be sure it’s actually IN the city and not too far from the places you want to see!

3. How to Get Around Paris with Kids

Just like in London, I prefer getting around Paris with kids on foot and by bus. Especially if you have a stroller or wheelchair, since the Metro requires a lot of stairs! Here are most forms of transportation in Paris. Below, in the “What To Do” section, I have also listed the metro and bus lines and stops for most attractions.

Paris Metro : This will take you almost anywhere you want to go. Click here for an awesome interactive map!  You can enter your departure and destination stations and it will tell you how to get there. I use it every time I go to Paris. Preload these if you can’t use data.

Here is a regular map of the Metro too.

RER : This is the regional train that will take you for day trips to places like Versailles and Disneyland Paris. It also goes through the city.

Hail a taxi. I have found their prices to be more than or equal to UBER so I don’t use them much in Paris. Their prices can be arbitrary and I just find UBER to be more reliable, plus you can request vans if you have a large family (like us)!

UBER is so great when you’ve just finished a long day of sightseeing, the kids are exhausted and you just can’t stand to be on your feet or hear your kids scream for one more second. Hail an UBER XL if you’ve got a family of more than 4. It is so fast, reliable, safe and fair! Here is a $20 credit from us which will be good for 1-2 rides! 

The public bike system in Paris, called Velib , is amazing. If you are visiting Paris with kids who are all old enough to ride bikes well and the weather will be decent, consider this mode of transportation. It is fun, exciting and you realize just how close everything in Paris really is! Plus, you’ll sleep well at night after a full day of exercise! There is also a handy basket in the front for your backpack, purse, diaper bag or baguette! I recommend signing up for Velib before you leave for Paris. Visit the Velib site here and purchase a 1 day or 7 day pass. They are CHEAP! 1.70 Euros for a 1 day pass and 8 Euros for a 7 day pass.    Here is a really helpful map of all the Velib docks you can pick up and park your bike.   I suggest printing this out and keeping it with you while you bike.

Paris is surprisingly walkable, even for kids. If you’ve got a stroller or kids who love to walk, you may be able to walk most places depending on your accommodations. Plan your route for the day and enter it on google maps. You can always take a bus, taxi, metro or UBER back to home base if the walking plan fails!

3. What to Do in Paris with Kids

Where to even start with this? We have been to Paris with kids during every season and love them all. It’s cold, in the winter and spring and hot in the summer, but so worth it whenever you go. Many may not initially think of Paris as a family-friendly destination, but there are so many great learning opportunities in Paris for the old and young! Here are some of our favorite things to do in Paris with kids. I’ve included the closest Metro and bus stop by each attraction.

1. Eiffel Tower Tour

Location: Champ de Mars, 5 Avenue Anatole France, 75007 Paris, France Metro: Trocadero (bit of a walk, but best view), Champ de Mars / Tour Eiffel on line RER C, Ecole Militaire on Line 8, Bir-Hakeim on Line 6. 2. Louvre Tour with Paris Muse

This is, by far, the best tour we’ve ever done! This private tour with Paris Muse gives you access to the Louvre, skips the line and provides you with a guide who is a qualified historian (ours had a phD!) and will teach you and your children more than you ever thought you could learn from an art museum. Nearly a year later, my kids still talk about little gems they learned. The tour is run as a little scavenger hunt and the kids receive a prize at the end. 3. Notre Dame de Paris

8. Arc de Triumphe

You can climb to the top and get amazing views of Paris! Grown-ups are 8 Euros and kids are free to go to the top. The Arc is surrounded by a round-about where 12 streets merge. It is pure insanity! Do NOT try to cross the street. There are underground staircases and tunnels on several intersections that will take you to the Arc.

If you get a chance, take a taxi or UBER and ask them to take you through the roundabout. We stayed near the Arc for several weeks so had to drive through this several times. Terrifying, but if you can drive this, you can drive anything! Beware that merging traffic coming INTO the circle has the right-away and cars in the circle must yield to incoming traffic. It seems bazaar, I know, but something to be aware of if you plan to drive through Paris!

9. The Catacombs

Referred to as “the world’s largest grave,” the Paris Catacombs hold the remains of over 6 million people! They were created to solve two major problems that Paris faced in the late 1700’s: 1. Cave-ins from the mines underneath Paris and 2. overflowing cemeteries! For 2 years the bones were carried from the cemeteries down into the tunnels to reinforce the walls of the mines. Many of the bones have been laid in patterns making this macabre art museum worth a visit, at least for history’s sake!

But this activity is not for the squeamish, you have been warned! From the Catacombs website: “The tour is unsuitable for people with heart or respiratory problems, those of a nervous disposition and young children. The Catacombs are not accessible for persons with reduced mobility.” They are also open limited days and hours so be sure to check here before visiting.

10. Toy Stores

Here is a list of Best shops in Paris for Kids . When we stayed by the Eiffel Tower we happened upon this adorable children’s boutique that carried the most beautiful clothing and softest stuffed animals. Oh to be rich! My kids each got a pencil ha! If you see the game “Puet Puet” then please get it. It’s like a card game of charades and we absolutely love it!

11. Follow Madeline

This map follows the “twelve little girls in two straight lines” from Ludwig Bemelmans’s first book, “Madeline” and the wonderfully non-straight path they take through Paris. If your kids love Madeline (or if you do) this is so much fun!

12. Sacre Coeur, Funicular & Montmarte

A beautiful and historic part of Paris that is known for its lovely narrow cobbled streets and was and is home to many artists, especially during the era of Impressionism such as Salvador Dalí, Amedeo Modigliani, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Piet Mondrian, Pablo Picasso, Camille Pissarro, Claude Monet, and Vincent van Gogh. I recommend reading a book about impressionist art like this one .

You can visit Sacre Coeur, walk the streets, have your picture painted (artists here must have a special license issued by the city which limits the number of artists allowed, so you know they will be good), stop and have a crepe or some frites and take the funicular, which has been running since 1900 (but has been updated) down the steps from Sacre Coeur if you don’t feel like walking up or down over 300 steps. This is a great option for strollers or wheelchairs (or toddlers throwing a tantrum)!

In an old railway station that will make you feel like you’re in the movie Hugo is the beautiful Musee d’Orsay, full of Van Gogh, Matisse, Degas, and Seurat, this is not to be missed! Your kids will love spotting paintings that they’ve seen in books!

17. Menagerie du Jardin des Plantes

Opened in 1793, the Menagerie du Jardin des Plantes is the oldest public zoo in the world. It began when the last of the King’s animals were brought from Versailles after the French Revolution.

18. Musee de l’Orangerie

Come here to see Monet’s beautiful Water Lillies and also other art from Cezanne, Matisse, Modigliani, Picasso, Renoir, Rousseau and more! Kids will love the larger than life curved canvas!

1. Versailles

The Palace of Versailles is a quick 50-minute train ride on the RER from Central Paris. It is direct and easy and worth it if you have time to spare in Paris. It is really an entire day event. The ticket line can be long, but once you are in it is totally worth it. We spent an entire day and didn’t cover everything.

We rented a golf cart because we went in March and it was cold, but you can also rent bikes or just walk. The grounds are truly beautiful. 2. Disney Paris

This one is take it or leave it for me. I grew up in Southern California going to Disneyland all the time (which I love), but this park seemed a little disappointing to me and just lacked the overall spirit of “The Happiest Place on Earth” and the food was terrible.

I think you’re better off making a trip to a different Disney, but if you’re a real fan, then by all means go. Our favorite hotel there is the Marriott where you can stay in a 2 bedroom townhouse for pretty decent rates! Sometimes we stay there when we are visiting Paris for just a day and passing through and don’t need to be in the city.

5. What to Eat

Ah, now on to the most important part right?! Please do me and yourself a favor and just throw the diet out the window while you’re there!  Some of your best memories in Paris will come from eating and rest assured, you will burn it off with all the walking and stair climbing you’ll be doing! If you’re gluten intolerant, don’t go to Paris (just kidding…macarons are GF, so you’re good)!

1. Fresh Bread from a Patisserie or Boulangerie

Do not just walk in and ask for “une baguette,” instead, read this article here about how to get the best bread!

2. Pain au Chocolat in the morning

Best breakfast in Paris! Go early, get them while they’re hot! Enjoy while wandering the streets. The kids will love these.

SOOO much cheese in France! So much! Visit one of the many Fromageries or go to a Monoprix (amazing store in Paris). Here is a guide to buying cheese in France.

4. Macarons

Oh, the beautiful Macaron! We love them, we even visited a macaron museum in the south of France. I’ve been attempting to bake them for years. I’ve never had a bad one in Paris, but we love Lauduree and Pierre Herme.

5. Chocolat Chaud (Hot Chocolate)

This is not your standard Swiss Miss packet mixed with hot water. In Paris, you will get hard chocolate with hot milk to pour over. It’s thick, delicious and amazing!

Crepes, crepes everywhere you go in Paris. We’ve had them all over. Our favorite spot is across the street from the Eiffel Tower, right on the Seine by the carousel. Our favorites are banana, strawberry, Nutella and Ham and cheese! Indulge!

7. Eclaires

I’ve never been an eclair fan until I had these from Leclaire de genie. Ah-ma-zing! Mascarpone is my favorite, but we’ve tried almost all of them and they are to die for! There is one inside the Louvre.

8. Croque Monsieur or Madame

Like a grilled ham and cheese sandwich with cheese on the outside, croque Monsieur is a fun meal on the go. Sit down at a bistro and have a croque madame which is the same thing, but with an egg on top (my personal fav)!

In my opinion, no one cooks fish as deliciously as the French. Drooling just thinking about all the amazing fish I’ve had in Paris! Try the Sole Meunière wherever you can find it. It’s my favorite and the first food that Julia Child had in Paris that made her fall in love with French food.  

10. Escargot

You’re in France…you’ve got to try it! It’s not so bad, promise!

11. Frog Legs or “ des Cuisses de Grenouille”

Not my personal favorite, but ya gotta try them right? They taste kind of like chicken!

Wow Vanessa! This is mammoth. So many great tips and brilliant advice. I’ve only been sans kids so will be following your advice when I eventually get to take my three.

Your kids are going to love it! A lot of people don’t think of Paris as kid friendly, but I totally think it is! Although some fancy restaurants will turn their nose up at you for bringing children to such a fine establishment lol!

What an amazing guide! I am going to pour over this before our next trip! Two of our faves not listed here is the Monet gallery which left Emmie speechless, Musee de L’Orangerie and the Picasso Museum in Marais. Fabulous for kids as they’re not huge and overwhelming like the Pompidou and are next to gardens

Visiting Paris with family (tried-and-true Paris with kids itinerary)

After staying close to home for the past few years, we are so grateful for the chance to travel internationally again. For our first big trip as a family since the before times, we decided to take the kids to France. My husband and I visited a few years ago for our 10th wedding anniversary (see our guide for planning a romantic couples vacation in Paris here ), and the kids were so jealous and have been asking for a family trip to Paris ever since! We went in March while the kids were on spring break and had the most fabulous time. The kids loved every moment, which made it a great trip for everyone. Today we’re sharing our guide for visiting Paris with family, including where to stay in Paris with kids, tips for traveling to Paris with kids, our specific recommendations for what to do while visiting Paris with kids, and our tried-and-true Paris with kids itinerary. We’ve got our detailed recommendations for our Paris itinerary with kids below, but first, here’s a high-level Paris with kids itinerary to help your planning. This doesn’t include many specific restaurants (aside from Angelina), but as Paris is one of the food capitals of the world, you practically can’t go wrong wherever you decide to stop to eat.

Tips for traveling to Paris with family

• With Paris being a culinary mecca, there are lots of amazing restaurants, many with some dishes that could be unfamiliar to young children. Travel is always a good opportunity to experiment (my youngest loved escargot!), but if you have picky eaters, rest assured that most restaurants will have a simple pasta dish or other yummy bread and cheese starters that are very kid-friendly. Our kids especially loved all the baguettes, pastries, and croissants during our family trip to Paris.

• Be prepared for a LOT of walking. Not just in town, but at your activities. We put many, many miles in on our days at Versailles and the Louvre. For this reason, make sure the kids are prepared and make sure everyone has comfortable shoes.
• If you are visiting Paris with a family of 4 or more and intend to use Uber, you will need to order larger van Uber cars, as most of the standard Ubers in Paris fit a max of 3 people (plus the driver). The cost is a little more and you sometimes have to wait longer, but we were still able to get reasonably-priced Ubers when we needed them. The metro is also a good (and economical) option for larger groups. I don’t recommend renting a car in Paris, as driving and the narrow roads can be intense. Instead, we opted to rent a car on our way out of Paris for the rest of our France trip.
• All of the activity coupled with jet lag can make a family vacation in Paris a bit tiring. Like any trip with kids, try to pace yourself and allow buffers in your schedule for when you just need a break. On at least one night we opted to turn in early to chill at our hotel and have room service for dinner while watching French TV. It was very rejuvenating before we got back out to explore the next day.

Where to stay in Paris with kids

Canopy by Hilton Paris Trocadero . When we were researching the best places to stay in Paris for families, we had a few criteria in mind: a safe area, a clean and comfortable hotel with room for two adults and two pre-teen kids, easy access to our desired activities, a view of the Eiffel Tower (we wanted to make it special since it was the kids’ first trip to Paris), and a reasonable cost (knowing Paris hotels are generally pricy, especially with Eiffel Tower views). The Canopy by Hilton Paris Trocadero met all these needs, and we recommend it if you’re looking for where to stay in Paris with kids. I’m a die-hard Hilton gal, so I knew I could trust the level of cleanliness and service at the property, and we were not disappointed. The hotel is located in the 16th Arrondissement “steps from Jardins du Trocadero and Trocadero Metro stop. The Eiffel Tower is a kilometer away and we’re less than 10 minutes from the Arc de Triomphe, Champs-Elysees, and Bois de Boulogne.” While not right in the center of everything, it was quick and easy to get where we needed to go by a quick car ride, or if you have the stamina, by walking across the Seine from the Trocadero. There are also several fantastic restaurants just on the corner. The hotel’s breakfast was incroyable , as were the other meals we tried from room service after long days exploring. We stayed in a King Junior Suite with Eiffel Tower View , and the price was very competitive considering the size of the room and the Eiffel Tower view. We were very happy with this choice of hotel and location, and would gladly stay there again.

What to do on a family trip to Paris (detailed Paris itinerary with kids)

Here are details on what we recommend checking out on a trip to Paris with family. For some context, our kids were about 10 and 12 years old when we visited, and they love museums and history, so we incorporated a lot of both into our Paris with kids itinerary. Even then, I was pleasantly surprised how engaged the kids stayed even after hours (and multiple days) of museums. Don’t underestimate how cool things like that could be from a young person’s perspective, and how it might tie-in with what they’re learning about in school.

Trocadero. One of the first things I recommend doing on a family trip to Paris is to take in the view of the Eiffel Tower from the Trocadero. This is free, and this spot across the Seine (and conveniently close to our hotel) is the perfect place to get an unobstructed view of the tower. My kids see Le Tour Eiffel as synonymous with Paris, so I wanted them to see the romance of it as soon as we could. As it can get crowded, I recommend visiting early in the morning if you’re trying to get the perfect photo opp. Though if you don’t care about the Instagram opportunity, it’s an amazing view any time of day, and you can still snap your quick photos!

Eiffel Tower . While you don’t need to do this every time you visit Paris, when traveling to Paris with kids for the first time, you should take a ride up the Eiffel Tower. I recommend getting tickets in advance. You can choose from options to visit the second floor via stairs or lift, or adding the additional lift to go all the way to the top. It is REALLY high up at the very top, so not for those who are afraid of heights. We are really glad that we made the choice to go all the way to the top. My kids still talk about it, and my youngest even wrote a short story for his class last week (6 months after the trip) on going all the way to the top of the Eiffel Tower. It’s clearly a memory that sticks with little ones!

Champ de Mars. This lovely park adjacent to the Eiffel Tower is a great place to relax, picnic, enjoy some street crepes (a very fun treat for the kids to try), and get more photos of the tower from the opposite side (compared to the views from the Trocadero).

Arc de Triomphe. After seeing the quintessential Tour Eiffel, we recommend spending the rest of the first day visiting Paris with kids doing some casual, self-paced sight-seeing. We walked to the Arc de Triomphe to take in the view of the world-famous monument before walking down the Champs-Élysées.

Champs-Élysées. Whether or not your kids care to go into the shops, it’s worth even a short walk down the iconic avenue during your family vacation in Paris. Even my kids thought it was cool to see the fabulous window displays at the flagship stores for some of the world’s biggest fashion houses. There are also several restaurant options to grab a meal if you’re hungry and want to rest your legs.

Château de Versailles . As I said, we love history, so a visit to Versailles was a must for us. Even though it may seem like more of an “adult” activity, we recommend it if you are traveling to Paris with kids. Our kids hadn’t learned much about French history in school yet, but were still really intrigued and really enjoyed their time there. I love that they have this historical context now for when they do study it in history class or see it in movies. Note that a visit to Versailles is pretty much an all-day activity, and as the grounds are massive, you might not have much energy for much else in your day afterwards. To break up the day and keep things fun for the kids, we recommend taking a break between the seeing the main palace and the Trianon (which I definitely recommend seeing) with some ice cream at the stand next to the Grand Canal or even renting a boat to float around the canal. Fab Everyday Tip: We also strongly recommend renting one of the electric vehicles to get around the grounds, as it will save your legs and add something fun for the family. They only allow you to go on certain roads (so you can’t take it for a joyride) and includes an audio tour. We learned a lot about the grounds and gardens from the audio tour on the electric vehicles!

Angelina . If you’d like to feel like you’ve been transported to Paris during the Belle Époque and enjoy some fabulous desserts, you must visit Angelina while visiting Paris with kids. There are a few locations, but I recommend visiting the original location on Rue de Rivoli. Why is this such a great thing to do while visiting Paris with family? The exquisite French pastries, of course, and their famous hot chocolate – the richest, most thick and creamy hot chocolate I’ve ever had.

Musée du Louvre . One of my husband’s and my favorite spots in Paris is the Louvre, so it was important for the kids to experience it as well during our family trip to Paris. Like Versailles, the Louvre can be an all-day activity (or at least most of the day) as well, so allow time so you can pace yourself. The line can get really long, so I recommend booking your tickets in advance for a specific entry time. In addition to iconic art pieces like the Mona Lisa , The Winged Victory of Samothrace , and the Venus de Milo , you can just wander and explore for hours seeing ancient artifacts, works by the great masters, and even just people watch the artists studying and sketching. Despite our legs and feet being tired and sore, our kids wanted to keep going! It was a pleasant surprise that we had to be the ones to convince the kids when it was time to leave. We were also very happily surprised when, after returning home from our trip, the kids immediately recognized a specific painting in a scene in a movie filmed at the Louvre. It’s amazing the things that stick in their mind, creating memories and learning culture at the same time. Fab Everyday Tip: One way to keep little kids engaged at museums is to plan a little scavenger hunt to guide their exploration. For example, we said we wanted to find a piece of art by every namesake of one of the Ninja Turtles (Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Donatello, and Raphael). It was a really fun challenge!

Jardin des Tuileries. This massive, historic park is a great way for the kids to use up any restless energy after visiting the Louvre. Our kids loved the playground, and though we didn’t have time to ride the carousel, it was really cool to see (and I’m assuming a fun activity while visiting Paris with kids).

Musée Marmottan Monet and/or Musée d’Orsay and/or Centre Pompidou . Depending on how many days you have for your trip to Paris with family, I recommend trying to fit in at least one of these museums. Paris is chock full of epic, world-class museums, so it can be hard to fit them all into a single trip. The Musée Marmottan Monet houses the largest collection of paintings by Claude Monet in the world, including his Waterlilies ( Nymphéas ) series and Impression, Sunrise . They also have lots of other works by other Impressionists. Musée d’Orsay (also near the Jardin des Tuileries) houses one of the largest collections of Impressionist paintings in the world in the former rail station. Not just paintings; you can see sculpture, photography, and more at this museum, which features mostly French art and artists. The Centre Pompidou I’ve never visited, but I hear it has an impressive collection and lots of activities for children. If the kids are feeling a little burnt out from the traditional art museums, some of the kid-focused, hands-on workshops at Centre Pompidou could be a great change of pace.

Cimetière du Père-Lachaise. If your kids like a little bit of spooky history like mine do, you will want to visit Père Lachaise Cemetery during your family vacation in Paris. At this large cemetery you can see the graves and tombs of such historic and cultural figures as Jim Morrison, Oscar Wild, Frédéric Chopin, Marcel Proust, Édith Piaf, Jane Avril, Marcel Marceau, Honoré de Balzac, Georges Bizet, Molière, Gertrude Stein, and so many more.

Catacombes . Speaking of spooky history, if your kids wouldn’t be frightened being 20 meters underground and surrounded by the skulls and other bones of more than six million people, a visit to the Paris Catacombs is a memorable addition to your Paris with kids itinerary. We were glad to make the visit through the labyrinth and take some time to learn the history. If you’re traveling with really young kids or if anyone in your party has mobility issues, be mindful that there are no elevators… just 131 steps to go down into the Catacombs, and then another 112 steps to climb back up.

Disneyland Paris . While we didn’t have time to visit Disneyland Paris, if you are on an extended family vacation in Paris, you may wish to add this to your Paris with kids itinerary. It has been recommended to us a few times, and as it’s smaller than the parks in the US, you can experience it within a day (and more affordably than the US Disney tickets). I’ve heard it joked that you can fly to Paris for a family vacation and visit Disneyland Paris cheaper than a family trip to Disneyworld. It wouldn’t surprise me if that was true.

Paris is on the top of so many peoples bucket lists for good reason. It’s stunning, historic, exciting and romantic but is that enough to keep the kids engaged? With a bit of careful planning then I guarantee the children will have as much fun as the adults so here’s everything you need to know to get ready for your family trip to Paris.

I first visited Paris with my parents when I was 10 and absolutely fell in love with the city. It felt both glamorous and adventurous at once. I was absolutely hooked. Since then I’ve returned many times with friends, my husband and most recently as a family of three. I love seeing the city through my daughters eyes, watching her discover all the things I saw 30 years ago. Everything has changed and nothing has changed and that is all part of the appeal of this famous city.

How to get excited about your family trip to Paris

A family trip to Paris is a once in a lifetime experience for many so you will want to start getting excited about your visit well in advance. Get the kids involved by talking about it often and ask them to make a list of the places they really want to visit.

Have a French night at home

We do this for most places we visit and it’s always heaps of fun. Everyone could dress in the colours of the French flag (red white and blue) with cheap berets if you can find them. Learn the words to Frère Jacques, set up a game of boules in the garden and attempt to build the Eiffel Tower out of lego. Write up a menu and serve french treats such a baguettes and cheese with macarons and crepes for pudding. If you’re feeling brave you could even serve up escargot (snails) although this may put some kids off rather than get them excited! End your evening with a France themed movie (pick from one below) and make your bedtime story one based in Paris.

Learn some French words

Make sure you learn a few words in French before you travel, this is both polite and will help the kids feel engaged when they’re there.

Is Paris good for kids? Really?

Paris can feel a little overwhelming for all of us so just imagine what it feels like for little ones. If you can keep away from ultra busy times at attractions, avoid crowds as much as possible and plan plenty of breaks then yes, Paris really is good for kids. If you have school age children then no doubt they will have learnt a bit about the city in class so will have an idea of what they want to see.

Paris is not somewhere to relax by the pool all day drinking cocktails, there is so much to see you wont want to waste a minute. Yes, it can be exhausting and you may well return with blisters on your toes and a crick in your neck from looking up at all the beautiful monuments but the memories are guaranteed to last a lifetime. Plus it’s a fabulous city for some on the go learning. I am a firm believer that travel is the best education.

What to do in Paris with kids

Firstly, don’t feel like you have to see it all. You won’t manage it which will just result in you all being disappointed. Have a rough itinerary of the whole families “must visits” and tweak it to suit your jetlag and the weather. There will be some things you should book in advance so try to plan these later in your visit.

If you’re visiting Paris with kids, this is not the time to be a travel snob. Let them do all the touristy activities they’ve dreamed of, buy the cheap souvenirs, get their caricature painted. You can always come back to explore the endless side streets and hidden corners.

The Eiffel Tower

My number one family friendly activity in Paris has to be a trip to the Eiffel Tower. Instantly recognisable to pretty much all ages you’ll see it towering above the buildings from pretty much all over the city. You don’t need to climb it to appreciate its splendour but of course that is exactly what the kids will want to do. Make sure to book your tickets in advance to climb the steps and take the elevator to the top. It’s pretty much always busy but the views from the top are worth the effort.

The famous glass pyramid in Paris is another instantly recognisable sight from the City of Lights and another one the kids will definitely want to visit. There’s something so stunning about the sleek glass structure set amongst centuries old, elegant buildings. The Louvre is the largest museum in the world and home to one of the most famous paintings in existence such as the Mona Lisa which is a great reason to visit but there’s also heaps more to see and do.

You can download the Louvrekids app before your visit so kids can enjoy stories and an audio tour as they explore the museum. The Louvre is free for under 18s so if the kids get too rowdy or a bit bored you wont feel too bad about just a quick visit. Book your tickets in advance so your can skip the queues.

Notre Dame is hugely significant in French history having been used for many key events throughout its past including the coronation of Napolean I. Inside this stunning building you’ll find a secret crypt which houses ruins from some of the cities earliest settlements. It also features in many books and movies based on the city. As I’m sure you know, much of it was destroyed in a fire a few years ago and they are currently going through the slow process of the rebuild. Luckily kids will still be able to spot some of the famous gargoyles.

The Natural History Museum and Jardins des Plantes

Surely every kid loves a Natural History Museum, the one in Paris will not disappoint. Not only will they discover all the usual selection of dinosaur skeletons and lifelike models but there are also heaps of hands on exhibits including a brilliant virtual reality space. Once you’ve had your fill of the museum, head outside and explore the Jardins des Plantes, a beautiful park which was Paris’ first botanical garden. Find out more on their website .

Musée d’Orsay

Although it may feel like I’m sending you to heaps of museums, this is one more that should absolutely make your “must do” list. I’ll let you decide which others to visit. The Musee d’Orsay   is a fabulous art gallery on the banks of the river Seine. It’s alot smaller than the Louvre and contains heaps of artwork that will fascinate the kids. If they’re not impressed with the exhibits, they might find it cool that this rather grand building was once a train station.

The Catacombs

This is probably one for older kids as it’s a bit dark, literally and figuratively. These gory tunnels located under the city actually stretch for 200 miles and date back to the 13th century. Human skulls and bones line the catacombs that were left by kings in the 17th century.

Paris parks

Jardin luxembourg.

There is so much to do with kids in the Jardin Luxemburg it’s a great place to spend a warm, dry morning. There are fairground rides, a huge adventure play ground, tennis courts, a boat pond and a charming puppet theatre. Being fairly centrally located it’s easy to combine this with an afternoon at a museum. During the summer months you can rent a little boat that kids push around the pond with a stick. So simple and yet so effective! It costs around €5 for half an hours peace.

Tuileries Gardens

The Jardins des Tuileries is conveniently located between the Louvre and the Place de la Concorde. It’s a very popular place for locals to bring their picnic chairs, a bottle of wine and relax on a sunny day. You’ll find lots of interesting sculptures, a couple of ponds and a few restaurants in the Tuileries Garden and of course space for the kids to run and play and you to have a quick sit.

Any little fashionistas will be very impressed with the fact that Paris Fashion week is normally held here.

Family day trips from Paris

Palace of versailles.

The Palace of Versailles is our favourite day trip from Paris. It’s just half an hour on the train from the city centre and is without a doubt one of the most beautiful buildings in France. Yes, it can get ridiculously busy and the gold covered interiors may not hold the little ones attention for long but the gardens and grounds are just stunning. There’s plenty of space to run around and the opportunities to learn more about France are endless. Disneyland Paris

Whilst this is most definitely not a unique French experience to enjoy on your family trip to Paris I’m sure the kids would love a day trip at Disneyland to shake up the vacation. It’s easy to get a train from central Paris to Disneyland and although not quite as big as the parks in the US you’ll still meet all your favourite characters and get to try out heaps of family friendly rides.

Organised tours are a great way to get to grips with a city, you’ll often pick up lesser known facts about a city and discover secret spots you may want to return to at a later date.

Big Bus Tour

We take these bus tours in most cities we visit, normally on our first day in a destination. It’s a great way to understand the layout of a place and figure out which parts are worth returning to. A big part of your visit to Paris will be the amazing food. Montmartre is a stunning neighbourhood and packed full of charming shops  full of treats to try. This 3 hour walking tour includes a great introduction to the area, exploring the narrow cobblestone streets and stunning mansions with a heavy focus on local artisan offerings. You’ll try pastries, cheese, wine and charcuterie leaving you with full tummies and a greater understanding of the city.

Where to stay in Paris with kids

For me there is no right or wrong neighbourhood to stay in Paris with kids. Most of them will include at least one thing you want to visit and you’ll have to hop on the metro to get to any others. When visiting Paris with teenagers or as adults only I recommend the artistic district around the Moulin Rouge, it has a brilliantly bohemian feel and plenty to see as you wander around in the evening.

For younger kids, a good option is the 7th arrondissement which is near the Eiffel Tower. My daughter loves catching a glimpse of the tower as soon as we leave our hotel or rental. Marais near the Champs Elysees is another good option, being fairly central and low key relaxed.

I recommend finding a rental apartment for your time in Paris. They tend to give you much more space and are more economical than hotel rooms. A rental also means you’ll be able to prepare some of your own meals and have a separate space to relax in when the kids have gone to bed.

If you do prefer hotels I recommend Le Bristol  near the Champs Elysees for a fabulously luxurious stay. It has a playground and kids club and is stunningly designed.

For those with a slightly more modest budget then try the Best Western Plus La Demeure  in the Latin Quarter. It’s still very beautiful and in a great location for a relaxed stay.

What and where to eat in Paris with kids

I don’t really have any favourite restaurants in Paris, we just tend to stop when we are hungry and find somewhere we like the look of. This works best if you head into the side streets off the beaten path a bit. That way you wont get caught out in a ridiculously priced tourist trap.

Cafes and bistros tend to be more relaxed and family friendly than restaurants which also open later.

You’ll also find plenty to keep you going throughout the day in patisseries, delicatessens and boulangeries. Just buy what you fancy fresh in the morning and enjoy a picnic taking in some of those gorgeous Parisien views. You’ll see many locals enjoying a wine with lunch on pretty blankets watching their kids run through the grass. Presuming you’re not driving (and I don’t recommend it in Paris!) this is a lovely way to wind down after a morning exploring.

How to get around Paris

For most cities we visit we like to walk. That way we notice the little things as we go, feel energised through the exercise and can take it at our own place. Paris is a very walkable city with many, many street cafes and parks to stop in when you need a break. If you choose a couple of spots you want to visit and walk from A to B it’s perfectly doable.

However, if you’re a bit tight on time you’ll need to use the metro system. Whilst it is a bit old and creaky in parts it’s almost as much of a must do as a visit to the Eiffel Tower when you’re in the city. The metro has 16 lines and over 300 stations. There’s bound to be one close to where you want to go. The stations are divided into zones and you can buy tickets based on which zones you want to visit.

Another option is a hop on hop off bus tour. Whilst this is a more expensive choice you’ll see so much being overground and they tend to visit all the big sights.

When is the best time to book a family trip to Paris

In our experience there is no good or bad time to visit Paris. There’s just differences in weather so pack appropriately! The summer months of July and August are when many Parisiens escape the heat of the city to visit the coast so the city may feel quieter. Although this is also when Europeans are enjoying their school summer holidays so tourist attractions will probably feel busier. Christmas is absolutely charming in Paris, although cold and busy.

I would say just keep your eye out for cheap tickets and go as soon as you can!

What to pack for your family trip to Paris

Things you’ll definitely want to pack include:

• A portable power bank
• Small rucksack for essentials
• Reusable water bottle
• A decent camera
• Trainers or walking shoes for the whole family
• Prescription medicine and any specific over the counter brands that suit the kids
• A money belt
• Copies of passports and vaccination certificates
• European adapters
• Suitable clothes for exploring, simple outfits can easily be dressed up with colourful accessories

If you can avoid bringing a stroller I would. Whilst kids may get tired quickly walking the streets of Paris, strollers often wont fit in the smaller cafes and restaurants, up the Eiffel Tower or in some metro stations. Schedule in plenty of breaks instead, hop on a carousel or pick up a couple of macarons.

Cost of a family trip to Paris

Paris can be a great value option from the UK, the Eurostar is cheap and fast and takes you right into the city. You’ll also find many low cost flights to Paris Charles de Gaulle which will get you there in an hour. From the US I’d budget around $750 each for flights. I always use Skyscanner to find the cheapest flights. I love that you can see all the prices for each day so you can plan the best price for within a date range.

A nice hotel room for a family will be around £250 a night with rentals a little less.

For a one way metro ticket you can expect to pay €7

A meal in a restaurant is around €15 per person but you can easily cut this back by packing picnics and eating in.

Attraction tickets can easily add up with a trip up the Eiffel tower coming in at over €50 per person. Splurge on the things you really want to visit and spend the rest of your time exploring the city on foot. It’s free and just as pretty!

You will be able to use credit and debit cards in most places in Paris so don’t bring too many Euros however you will want some for tips, buskers, snacks and taxis if you use them.

Do not forget to factor in the cost of travel insurance for your family trip to Paris. This is so important wherever you are travelling around the world, especially now plans can be forced to change at the last minute.

Traveling with kids. What better opportunity to create lifelong memories and grow closer as a family, right?

Trips with younger members of the family can be a bit tricky - finding activities and restaurants everyone enjoys is no easy task! Also, as a parent, it is tough to balance keeping an eye on kids with learning about what you're visiting - who has time to pull out a guide book with kids in tow? 

With me as your guide, everyone will get the most out of Paris!

My bespoke experiences and travel planning services are crafted for you & your family.  All of my services include tons of handy tips on everything from kid-friendly outings, public transportation, off the beaten track spots in Paris only locals know about, avoiding tourist traps, and much more.

My tours are specialized for families and adapted to the age of your 'petite' ones.  I focus on the major monuments and history, but also on daily life in France, French culture, street art, boutiques and specialty food shops... all the things that I personally find very interesting when I travel! 

For kids, I bring alo ng sketching supplies, bubbles and chalk to keep them happy, engaged and learning. We stop for fun things for the kids as needed - that can mean a carousel ride, treat, or park.  I also give lots of tips for the rest of the stay during our time together.

Count around 2.5 hours per tour.  Price : 300 euros for up to 6 people, then 25 euros / additional person.

The Montmartre Tour

My favorite tour is Montmartre, my neighborhood of the past decade. Visitors get a little of everything, from the history of Paris and the impressionist painters, seeing Sacré Coeur basilica and the gorgeous views of Paris, to ducking into some great bakeries and experiencing the village like ambiance.  There are fun stops along the way, like the gorgeous double-decker carousel below Sacré Coeur, and the funicular to get to the summit of the Montmartre hill.

This tour explores central Paris, covering the islands and the surrounding area. The 'Get to know your neighborhood / Paris' tour is perfect for first time visitors to the City of Light, and is best at the beginning of a trip.  I will meet you at your hotel or apartment, and we will do a quick overview of Paris tips - etiquette, culture, safety, and differences to be aware of, and then other suggestions for getting to most out of time in Paris.  We can explore the surrounding neighborhood, finding the closest grocery, bakery, pharmacy, etc, and then visit the closest metro station to buy tickets and get a crash course on using public transportation, ensuring easy navigation in the city.

A one-day pass is €27 ($30) and includes access to the 40-plus rides, forest adventures, trampolines, and carnival games.

Parc Zoologique de Paris (Paris Zoological Park)

With a focus on biodiversity and conservation, the Parc Zoologique de Paris created scientific and educational programs with the help of zoo technicians and other experts. Divided into five biozones, families can watch and learn about the park’s 180 species and thousand or so animals as they roam natural environments that are replicas of their native ecosystems. You can easily spend the day here picnicking on takeaway treats like waffles and ice cream and at the children’s play area.

Aquarium de Paris

One of the few attractions open every day of the week, the Aquarium de Paris is located in the Trocadéro Gardens, across from the Eiffel Tower, and features one of the largest shark tanks in the country, filled with three million liters of water, plus more than 7,500 different marine life from France and its territories. Throughout the day, the aquarium puts on different shows, films, and presentations on some of its star inhabitants, like jellyfish.

Centre Pompidou

Intended to appear like a “huge spaceship of glass, steel and colored tubes,” the six-story museum is the largest dedicated to modern art in Europe. The playful architecture adds to the appeal factor for families—kids can ride the series of escalators while taking in the view over Paris. What’s great about this museum is that children, adults, and even those who aren’t the biggest art fans will find something entertaining here. The Galerie des Enfants (kids gallery) is designed for ages 3 to 10 and features interactive workshop exhibitions designed by contemporary artists, while the Atelier des Enfants (kids studio) skews even younger, for babies and children up to age 10, and is meant to help develop an awareness of art and creation with workshops and circuits through the museum with actors or musicians.

Jardin des Tuileries

Near the Castiglione entrance, kids can play on swings or a slide, or head to the nearby carousel for a ride.

The former tile factory-turned-palace (courtesy of Queen Catherine de Medici) crowns the French formal Tuileries gardens , whose current style was designed in the mid-1600s by the gardener of King Louis XIV. A favorite for strolling – especially when the tulips bloom in spring – the gardens, which form a divider between the Louvre and Place de la Concorde, have a few fun attractions for families. From the two ponds to Monet-filled Musée de l’Orangerie, but the highlight is Fête des Tuileries, when the Tuileries transform into a fair from June to August, complete with rides, a Ferris wheel, and cotton candy.

Versailles Musical Fountains Show

From April 1 until late October, the Palace of Versailles’s 55 fountains put on magnificent shows with 600 water features creating performances choreographed to music by baroque composers like Lully and Handel. Depending on when you’re visiting Paris, you can catch one of the night fountain shows ending in fireworks.

Cité des Sciences (Science Museum)

The largest science museum in Paris, Cité des Sciences features a planetarium with 30-minute shows and astronomy specialist-led talks, plus 360-degree computer-generated images exploring the universe and how Earth was created. In addition to a mix of interactive permanent and temporary exhibits touching on everything from the brain to the story of the universe, the museum has a dedicated children’s section, Cité des Enfants, with five thematic areas for kids ages 2 to 7 to play and experiment.

Parc Astérix

After Disneyland Paris, this French comic-themed park is the second-largest in the country. Located about 40 minutes from the capital, Parc Astérix is packed with 47 attractions and shows set in six different worlds revolving around the adventures of cartoon characters Astérix and Obélix in spots like Ancient Greece and Egypt. For thrill-seekers, the Toutatis roller coaster is the fastest attraction in France, zipping at up to 68 mph.

How to Get Around Paris with Kids

Companies like BabyCabs guarantee car seats, but your best bet is to bring or rent a stroller with a car seat if you want to take a small child in a taxi or ride-share.

Public transportation is the most cost-effective way to get quickly around town, but it can be tricky navigating the métro with a stroller (elevators aren’t always accessible or easy to find). The easiest option is a taxi or ride-share, and if you’re a larger group, a van can hold up to 6 people.

10 Tips for a Perfect Family Vacation in Paris

Every summer we take advantage of school holidays and head to new places with our three young kids—26 countries in the past eight years. But we also find ourselves returning again and again to favorite destinations. Paris is one of them. Since November is a perfect time to start planning travel for next summer , it’s also the perfect time to share a few valuable lessons we’ve learned over the course of several trips to the City of Light. These ten tips make our vacations fun for the kids (and adults) and largely stress-free.

1. Try a rental instead of a hotel. We love renting apartments instead of staying in hotels. In an apartment we feel like locals: We have a kitchen—with all the dining flexibility that it brings—and we have far more space than we would in a hotel. Plus, since there are five of us, we would require two hotel rooms, and that becomes expensive. When we spent time in Paris this summer (as part of our six-week trip through Europe ), we rented a house through Airbnb, complete with a courtyard, and it was the perfect place to return to after a day of exploring.

Additional tip: We always stay in the 7th arrondissement. It has the markets of Rue Cler as well as the Eiffel Tower, both of which are landmarks that make it really easy to find our way back home from anywhere in the city.

2. Search out smaller museums. The major museums like the Musée d’Orsay and the Louvre are absolutely worth visiting (see my next tip), but there’s much more to explore in Paris than just the big-ticket attractions, and you’re missing out if you don’t take the time to suss out the unusual and unique small spots in any city. They are often less crowded, just as interesting (if not more so), and easier to see with kids with naturally shorter attention spans. Two of our favorite small museums are the Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature and the Musée Marmottan Monet . The Musée de la Chasse is fun and quirky for kids: There are a lot of interactive animal-related displays in a setting that reminds me of a Wes Anderson film. The Monet Museum lets kids get up close to amazing Impressionist art (without the crowds) and to see Monet’s progression as an artist—something you don’t necessarily see at large museums that focus on major works.

Additional tip: Save the museums for a rainy day. Even when the weather is bad, the smaller museums are rarely crowded.

3. If you’re going to a major museum, book a kid-friendly private tour. One of the highlights of our summer trip was a private tour of the Louvre with Paris Muse . Not only did we avoid most of the lines and crowds, but the kids had a great time completing word puzzles and being led on a treasure hunt that included a wide spectrum of Babylonian, Greek, French Medieval, and Italian Renaissance art and antiquities.

Additional tip: There are numerous groups that lead kid-centric private tours, including Paris Muse and Context Travel. Search on TripAdvisor for “Paris Activities” to see tour reviews, or check Wendy’s WOW List of Trusted Travel Experts to find someone who can arrange special activities wherever you’re traveling.

4. Think picnics. Every summer that we return to Paris, we find ourselves having more and more picnics, both for lunch and dinner. We’re able to sit and enjoy wine while the kids run around and play—and the breads, meats, cheeses and tarts bought from local markets can’t be beat.

Additional tip: Bring a thin linen blanket from home (which, in addition to being perfect for picnics, can be used as a towel or a sarong) and buy disposable plates, cups and utensils at the local supermarché.

5. Walk. A lot. The Métro is great for reaching farther-afield areas of the city and for giving legs a rest, but the biggest mistake that first-time visitors to Paris make is that they take the Métro from major site to major site and miss out on the neighborhoods and the transitions between arrondissements. There are great parks, churches, cafés, and shops outside of the major tourist areas, and some of our best days have been the ones when we did the most walking.

Additional tip: We like picking a destination in the morning or the night before, taking the Métro there, exploring that area, and then slowly walking back to our apartment in the afternoon, buying things for dinner along the way.

6. Learn to cook. We’ve always loved macarons. So this summer we learned how to make them with Cook’n With Class in Montmartre. Our kids were involved in every step, from preparing the dough and fillings to final assembly—and, best of all, they got to take home everything that they made. Whether you’re into pizza, baguettes or pastries, you can find a cooking class for it in Paris. And it doesn’t even take up a whole day—a short course is a perfect morning or afternoon activity.

Additional tip: If you find a class that looks great for your family but is geared to adults, ask the school if they can offer you a kid-friendly version.

7. Become regulars. On Rue de Grenelle near Champs de Mars there is a little Italian restaurant. We’ve eaten there six times over the past two summers, and every time is better. When they see us they seat us right away. They anticipate the kids’ drinks. They give us extra appetizers, sweets, and after-dinner liquors at no cost. We always get the same waiter and expand on our conversations each time, as much as possible in French. It makes for a much better experience than simply being one-time visitors. The same holds at boulangeries, where the lovely lady behind the counter would anticipate our pain au chocolat order every morning, or at the local fresh fruit market, where they gave us frequent discounts for not-really-noticeable produce blemishes—but only after we had gone there several times.

Additional tip: Always try to speak French. Even if it’s just one or two sentences that you quickly looked up on Google Translate, it gets you a better level of service than walking in and assuming that the staff speaks English.

8. Stop at every carousel. There are a lot of carousels in Paris. Every one is different, and our kids love all of them, so we never say no when we’re passing one. The brass rings are always a highlight because you don’t see them in the U.S. very often anymore. There’s rarely a wait, and it’s a nice chance to relax after a lot of walking.

Additional tip: The best carousels for spearing brass rings are at Luxembourg Gardens (by the playground) and at Champs de Mars park, near the Eiffel Tower.

9. Skip the big amusement parks. Forget Disneyland Paris. Head to the Jardin d’Acclimatation instead. It’s a much more authentically Parisian experience, easier to get to, and a lot less expensive, with a small entry fee and then pay-per-ride attractions. Go early, before the park gets crowded.

Additional tip: Bring swimsuits and towels. Our kids love the water area.

10. Stay up late. A few years ago when we landed in Paris, my wife and two of the kids were jet-lagged and went to sleep early, but my oldest daughter and I felt wide awake. So we quietly left the apartment and walked all around the Eiffel Tower, the Champs du Mars, and the Trocadero area for two hours, including several trips around the Trocadero carousel. It was great one-on-one bonding, and we got to see more Parisian nightlife than we usually do. Since then, it’s become a tradition for the two of us: We always head over on our first night, and then once or twice a week after that.

Additional tip: I especially enjoy walking at night after it’s rained. The reflections are magical.

When planning a trip to Paris, it doesn’t take long to realize that the city is divided up into areas called “arrondissements,” equivalent to what other cities refer to as neighborhoods or districts. (Leave it to Paris to have such a beautiful word for it, non?) Paris also offers families more to see and do than can be fit into one trip, no matter how long. So when visiting Paris, it’s best to avoid crisscrossing the city, wasting time and depleting everyone’s energy levels with unnecessary walking. And consider where to stay in Paris with kids by contemplating which arrondissement you might spend the most time.

Instead, organize the time you do have strategically and efficiently. Spending a day or two in each of the central arrondissements makes a lot of sense for these reasons. And it might even leave with you some extra time to explore some of the lesser known areas of the city and make your own discoveries! Investing in a museum pass may also help skip the lines at the popular tourist attractions.

Please note that I’ve taken a little liberty with this guide to some of Paris’ more popular arrondissements. There are a few attractions or sites located very close to the border between two arrondissements. I grouped them where I thought it made the most sense to visit that particular site. I’ve noted these instances with an asterisk (*) to provide clarity. By organizing your day this way, you’ll be able to walk to all the destinations within each sample itinerary and only use public transportation or taxis to get to and from your hotel.

A Family Guide to Paris’ Arrondissements

Arrondissements 1 & 2.

The must-see sights: The Louvre , Jardin des Tuileries

Sample Itinerary: Get to the Louvre at opening time (earlier if you don’t have tickets). Spend the morning here hitting the highlights or taking a private tour with a vetted kid-friendly guide . Re-energize everyone with a picnic lunch and playtime in the Tuileries. Kids love the carousels and ice cream stands! If you don’t have picnic fixings or you want a hot lunch, Café Renard , located within the Tuileries itself, has plenty on the menu that appeals to children and adults alike.

Alternatives: The much smaller and far less crowded Musee de l’Orangerie (full of Impressionist art, including Monet’s Water Lilies) and Musee en Herbe (a children’s art museum) would be great alternatives to the Louvre and are still very close to the Tuileries for an afternoon of play.

Arrondissements 3 & 4

The must-see sights: Notre Dame , Centre Pompidou , boat ride along the Seine *

Sample Itinerary: When Notre Dame Cathedral reopens, we recommend getting there as early as you can and do as much inside as your children can handle (guided tour, self-guided audio tour or even just a climb to the top of the towers). If entrance lines are long, kill time by playing in the small park behind the cathedral. During reconstruction, visit nearby Sainte-Chapelle with its impressive stained glass windows as an alternative to Notre Dame. Then head to Pont Neuf, where you can relax for an hour with a boat ride along the Seine. After disembarking, refuel with lunch. Cafes and restaurants are plentiful in this area. I recommend Happy Days Diner for a casual and kid-friendly option (2 Rue du Roule, directly across Rue de Rivoli from Pont Neuf). Then head to the Pompidou Centre to take in the modern art. Kids can have plenty of creative fun in the Galeries des Enfants or in one of the museum’s many children’s workshops.

Alternatives: If you’ve already reached church or museum overload, spend some time at Hotel de Ville; get some fresh air in the open square in front of this gorgeous building (Paris’ city hall since the mid-1300s). Around the Christmas holiday, you can ice skate here.

Arrondissements 5 & 6

The must-see sights: Jardin des Plantes , Jardin du Luxembourg , Le Bon Marche *

Sample Itinerary: Spend your morning at the family-friendly Jardin du Luxembourg. When you picture your children playing in a Parisian park, this is likely what you’ve been imagining, from carousels to miniature sailboats. Then head to Le Bon Marche,* Paris’ oldest and most elegant department store. The adjacent La Grande Epicerie de Paris is the food hall and market, where you can grab gourmet picnic fixings. After your picnic, spend the afternoon in the Jardin des Plantes, walking through the scenic Latin Quarter en route, and take your pick from the zoo (Menagerie), Les Galeries de Paleontologie (mostly dinosaur exhibits) or Grande Galerie de l’Evolution (with many animals on display). Cap off your day at the Manege a Dodo, one of Paris’ most charming carousels.

Alternatives: If the weather doesn’t cooperate for a morning at Jardin du Luxembourg, then go straight to the top of Tour Montparnasse for amazing views of Paris. Even the top terrace has a roof to protect you on a rainy day. It’s an average-looking skyscraper full of offices, but it’ll be far less crowded than the Eiffel Tower and has views to rival it.

Arrondissements 7 & 8

The must-see sights: Eiffel Tower , Musee d’Orsay , Arc de Triomphe

Sample Itinerary: This is probably the trickiest day to plan, as lines can be exceedingly long at most of the main attractions. The crown jewel of the 7th arrondissement is the Eiffel Tower . Consider skipping going up into it and admire it from below at leisure. Instead, head to the Musee d’Orsay first thing in the morning and spend a couple of hours admiring the Impressionist art and the gorgeous building (a former train station). Then head to the Champs-Elysees to have lunch near the Arc de Triomphe. If the line is short at the Arc, go to the top, where you can admire a great deal of the city without the dizzying heights of the Eiffel Tower. Give everyone a rest back at your hotel before heading to the Eiffel Tower in the early evening. Take lots of photos while there’s still daylight (approach it from the Trocadero metro stop for the best angles), and then stick around until dark to watch the Tower be illuminated. It happens for 5 minutes at the top of each hour throughout the evening.

Alternatives: If you have older children who love to shop (or even window-shop), spend more time browsing the big fashion names along the Champs-Elysees.

By visiting these eight central arrondissements and their most famous sites, you’ll only be scratching the surface of what Paris has to offer families. But c’est la vie, there’s always next time. You’ll be planning the next family trip to Paris before you even finish the first.

Hi Bonnie, thanks for the feedback. I echo Amie’s suggestion, but also wanted to point out that while I now travel with relatively young kids, I visited Paris as a teenager and basically did most of this itinerary (although not as efficiently as what I’ve outlined above…I’ve learned a few things since then). On that trip, I spent a bit less time in the parks I mention above, and extended my time in some of the museums. I hope that’s helpful to you. I think the itineraries would work for most age ranges, with a few minor adjustments depending on interests.

16 Easy Steps for Planning Your Next Trip

I remember when I started planning my first trip around the world. I had no idea what I was doing.

When I decided to quit my job and travel the world , I walked into a bookstore and bought Lonely Planet’s Southeast Asia on Shoestring . Buying that guidebook was my first step toward long-term travel. It made the trip seem more real, more tangible. It made it all seem possible.

While helpful, the book didn’t exactly prepare me for planning a trip around the world. Back then, there weren’t really travel blogs, sharing economy websites, and apps like there are today. I was excited and determined — but I was lost. I had to figure it out as I went, hoping I didn’t miss anything important.

Trip planning can be a daunting task. Where do you begin? What’s step one? What’s step two? What’s step three?

It’s easy to get overwhelmed, especially when you haven’t done something like this before — and especially considering just how much information there is out there these days. Blogs, social media, and guidebooks have never been more plentiful. There’s a firehose of information out there that can sometimes make the task of planning a trip even more challenging and overwhelming.

After a decade of traveling the world , I’ve planned countless trips and vacations for myself, friends, family, and even group tours. In the beginning, it was trial by fire and I learned a lot of lessons the hard way . However, that helped me develop an efficient checklist that ensures I don’t miss anything important during the trip planning process.

After all, I don’t want to get to my next destination and then realize I forgot something. And neither do you!

There is a lot of information on this website ( and even more information packed into my book ), but one question that comes up frequently is, “Matt, how do I put this all together? How do I plan a trip?”

In a continuing effort to help you get out the door and into the world, I’ve created this step-by-step guide on how to plan a trip. It works for any kind of trip — no matter how long you’re going for! Just follow this checklist and you’ll be off in no time!

It’s a lot easier to mentally get behind “I am going to Paris in the summer” than “I’m going to Europe” or “I’m going somewhere.” Not only will your trip become more concrete for you and easier to commit to, but it will make planning easier as well…because you know what to work towards. Get specific with your plans. Get detailed. The more focused and concrete your goal, the easier it will be to actually reach it.

How much does it cost to travel? That depends!

Without knowing how long you’re going away for, I can’t answer that question. And it’s a question you need to answer so you can start planning!

In order to figure out how much you need to save you’ll need to know how long your trip will be.

Are you going away for a week? A month? A year?

The length of your trip is a huge factor in determining how much money you need. Spend some time mulling that over until you have your answer.

For example, after you say “I’m going to Paris this summer,” add “for X days.” That way you can start to narrow down just how much money you’re going to need to save. “I am going to Paris for 10 days” is a trip that you can plan for. It’s an attainable goal.  

So you know where you’re going and how long you’ll be there, but to really nail down how much money you need, your next task is to research the costs in your destination at the style of travel you want.

Do you want to backpack, or would you rather stay in luxury hotels?

How much are hostels, hotels, restaurants, and attractions?

Knowing will allow you to estimate how much money you’ll need for your trip. Here is how to research costs:

• Buy a guidebook.
• Check out my travel guide section .
• Google prices for specific things you want to do, such as scuba diving, bungy jumping, winery tours, etc. ( Get Your Guide is a good place to start for that)

You don’t need to do more than that. There’s so much information on the web that if you go down the rabbit hole of overplanning, you’ll get lost and confused by the firehose of information. Stick to those three things and you’ll be set!

In our example, if you are going to Paris for 10 days and need at least $75 USD a day (not including your flight), you know you need to save $750 USD (though round up to $800-900 USD since it’s good to have extra) for your trip.

If you were to travel around the world for a year, you’d need $50 USD a day .

People bleed a lot of money every day through small purchases: a coffee here, a snack there. All of that adds up. In order to make changes to your spending habits, you first need to understand them. Making a list will do just that. It will also put your financial needs into a better perspective.

For example, if you need $2,000 USD for the trip you’re taking in eight months, that means you only have to save $8.33 USD per day. Couldn’t you find a way to save $8 USD per day? Heck, your daily coffee is most of that!

If you’re struggling to save money, here are 23 ways to cut your expenses and save money for travel . This will help you get started and on the road to saving money in no time!  

These days, most cards have welcome offers of up to 100,000 points when you meet their minimum spending requirement. That’s enough miles for a free flight almost anywhere in the world!

If you want a free flight, sign up for the cards that help with that. If you want free hotel rooms, get a hotel card. Either way, sign up for a travel credit card and start earning points today. As long as you can pay off your monthly balance, you’ll get free travel credit.

You don’t need to sign up for very many cards either; pick one or two and focus on those. Do this the moment you decide you want to travel. Don’t wait — waiting equals lost miles, which means less free travel.

Collecting points and miles is what all the experts do to cut their costs and travel longer. It’s what has kept my costs down and me on the road for so many years. While the best cards are only available in the US, there are still plenty of options for Canadians as well as folks from Europe, Australia, and New Zealand.

Once you’re abroad, you’re going to need money. While many countries accept credit cards, in the majority of countries cash is still king. That means you’ll need to use ATMs to withdraw the local currency.

And that also means you’re going to get dinged by ATM fees.

If you’re just away for a week or two, paying a few dollars in ATM fees isn’t the end of the world. But if you’re away for a longer period, those fees add up and chew into your travel budget — a budget you’ve worked hard to grow. Don’t give banks any of your hard-earned money.

How? By using a no-fee ATM card.

I use Charles Schwab , but there are lots of other banks (don’t forget to check your local banks) that don’t charge ATM fees. Additionally, you can join a bank in the Global ATM Alliance .

By using a no-fee ATM card you can avoid those pesky ATM fees, leaving you more money for what it was intended for: travel.

While you get closer to your goal, make sure that you keep feeding your desire to travel. Travel planning can be exhausting and overwhelming — especially if you don’t have support from your friends and family (and especially if your trip is still months away). It can often get discouraging and feel out of reach at times.

These are a great way to get inspired, meet other awesome travelers in your area, and get travel advice.  

Okay, you’re inspired, prepared, and on your way to saving money for your trip. But before you go buy that flight or book that hotel, check for deals you might have missed. You may dream of Paris but maybe there are great deals to Berlin right now. Or maybe you can get a seven-day cruise for 70% off, a package deal to Hawaii for the price of your flight to Paris, or 50% off sailing trips around Greece.

These days, there is always a deal to be found — especially if you’re flexible with your dates and/or destinations. Some deal websites worth checking out are:

Fortunately, there are still many ways to avoid being the person on the flight who paid the most for their ticket. My two favorite sites for finding cheap airfare are:

• Skyscanner – Skyscanner is the best website for searching multiple destinations at the same time.

For the best deals, book your flight about two-three months in advance. Here are two articles on how to score a cheap flight:

For trips longer than two weeks (or if you are going to be traveling long-term) just book your first few days. That will ensure you have a place to go on arrival. Once there, you can get insider advice from your hotel/hostel staff as well as other travelers. You can then use that info to plan your next steps.

While you can book more than your first few nights, you might end up wanting to change your plans once you land. I prefer having flexibility, which is why I always just book my first few nights and go from there.

Here are my go-to sites when it comes to finding the best deals on accommodation:

• Hostelworld – Hostelworld has the largest selection of hostels and is my go-to site for finding affordable hostels.
• Agoda – Agoda has the best results if you’re heading to Asia (though they sometimes have good US deals too).
• Booking.com – Booking.com is the best overall platform for finding budget hotels and guesthouses.

If you’re on a tight budget or you want to connect with more locals during your travels, consider joining platforms like Couchsurfing or BeWelcome . These communities allow travelers to stay with locals for free as a sort of cultural exchange.

Long-term travelers can also try housesitting or WWOOFing as well as they both offer free accommodation (in exchange for pet sitting or farm work respectively).  

Search online for discounts as well. While some countries offer cheaper prices in person, others give discounts to those who book early/online. Research which is which for your itinerary so you can save money.

For shorter trips, you can also book your activities in advance to ensure you get tickets. For longer trips, book as you go.

Additionally, before you leave home, have a rough idea of what activities are priorities for you. That way, if you run out of time or money, you can focus on your top activities so you don’t miss out. Also, make sure to double-check that there are no holidays or other obstacles that will prevent you from certain activities as well.  

If you are going on a long-term trip (six months or more), consider selling your stuff in order to earn extra money for your trip. Start doing this about 60 days before you leave. Some sites to use are:

• Gumtree – An online classified site with a focus in the UK and Australia.
• Amazon – The biggest online store in the world.
• Craigslist – Online global classifieds that have both local and global reach.
• eBay – Another global online classified site.
• Facebook Marketplace – Great for finding people near you (so you don’t need to ship your items).

If you aren’t going to be gone that long, skip this step. If you are going away long-term but want to keep your stuff, move it to a friend’s house or keep it in storage. A good storage company in the US is Public Storage . It’s one of the most affordable options out there.  

Get rid of your mail, go paperless, and set up online bill payment for your recurring bills to ensure you won’t miss any while overseas. If you are still going to get paper mail, use a service like Earth Class Mail , which will collect and scan your mail for you. (If you are going on a two-week trip, you don’t really need to worry about this, so you can skip this step, too.)

If you have the option (and don’t want to pay for a mail service), you can also have all your mail sent to a friend or family member.

Additionally, you’ll want to make sure you cancel any phone plans you have or switch your plan to one that is more travel-friendly. T-Mobile is great for travelers going on trips under 3 months. For any trips longer than that, you’ll want to cancel your plan and just buy SIM cards abroad as that will be much cheaper.  

I travel with a 45L REI bag and then a smaller day bag.

Unless you’re heading to multiple climates and need bulky winter gear, you don’t need a massive 70L bag stuffed to the top. Here’s my suggested packing list to help you take just the right amount of stuff and avoid overpacking ( here’s a list for female travelers as well ).

While what you pack will depend on where you are going, remember that you don’t need to pack everything you own. You can buy things you need on the road. You can do laundry overseas. At the end of the day, you have to carry everything you bring. So bring less!

There are a few extra items you might want to pack beyond your everyday clothes, though. Some things I like to bring with me are:

• First aid kit
• LifeStraw bottle with built-in filter
• Packing cubes (to stay organized)
• Travel lock (for hostel lockers)
• Travel adapter
• Quick-dry towel

Additionally, make sure you bring any prescriptions with you so you have enough for the duration of your trip. If that’s not feasible, bring a doctor’s note and prescription with you so you can fill it abroad.  

While a lot of people think, “I’m healthy, I don’t need travel insurance . I won’t get sick,” travel insurance is much more than just medical protection. It covers you when your camera breaks, your flight is canceled, a family member dies and you have to come home, or if something gets stolen.

Yes, it’s an added expense. But it’s always better to be safe than sorry. I never leave home without it because I’ve seen first-hand just what can happen on the road.

I never thought I would pop my eardrum while I was scuba diving in Thailand or break my camera in Italy .

I didn’t know I would get knifed in Colombia .

My friend never thought he would break his leg hiking.
